  1. We're going to read now from Matthew 5, partway through the Sermon on the Mount.

  2. Matthew 5, again thinking about retaliation and injustice.

  3. So Matthew 5, and from verse 38.

  4. You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

  5. But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil.

  6. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

  7. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.

  8. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

  9. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

  10. This is God's Word.

  11. Ryan.

  12. Thank you to the worship team for that key modulation.

  13. So that my voice shouldn't crack because it's loose and ready to go right now.

  14. We are continuing a series on the Sermon on the Mount.

  15. One of the things that we'll talk about sometimes in circles that I'm in is like,

  16. if you were king for the day, what would you do?

  17. And we usually are talking about if you could control your situation,

  18. like how would you orchestrate things?

  19. Like we'll do this with uni students.

  20. So like they're trying to figure out what kind of career they should pursue or a job.

  21. It's like, well, if you were king for the day and could do anything you want,

  22. like what would you choose?

  23. And a lot of times the answers that are going to come to our mind that we might give

  24. are typically something that's going to make life more enjoyable or at least more comfortable.

  25. Definitely less pain and less strain.

  26. Well, the king in the Sermon on the Mount has actually given us what a beautiful life, as Corey has said,

  27. what a life of flourishing looks like.

  28. The one who's the king for all time has told us what life in the kingdom looks like.

  29. And so that's what we're talking about in this series on the Sermon on the Mount.

  30. Our passage tonight is one of six passages where Jesus says,

  31. you have heard it said, referring to some of the traditions that the Jewish leaders have given.

  32. But I say to you, and when Jesus is saying that, I say to you,

  33. he's actually not giving a new law, like Lewis reminded us a couple of weeks ago,

  34. that he's not giving us a new and harder way to live.

  35. When you read the Sermon on the Mount, you're like, this is impossible.

  36. I can't live like this.

  37. Like the one who lusts is like committing adultery in his heart.

  38. And if I have anger towards my brother, I'm committing murder.

  39. It's like this is not a life we can live.

  40. He's not giving us a new law to obey or making life in the kingdom more difficult.

  41. But instead, he's getting at the heart of things and he's teaching as one who has authority.

  42. In fact, at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, you will see in chapter 7, verse 29,

  43. that the people were astonished, it said, because he was teaching them as one who had authority.

  44. So he's giving them, this is what life in the kingdom looks like or is to be like.

  45. Now, when you approach the Sermon on the Mount, there are a couple of things that you need to understand.

  46. One is that this was a sermon that was preached all at one time.

  47. And we don't know how long it took him to preach this sermon.

  48. But when we take parts of this sermon and don't see it in the context of the whole,

  49. we can really misunderstand what Jesus is telling us.

  50. So we need to see it as a whole sermon and keep that in mind so that when Jesus says something that seems to us really weird or really hard,

  51. we can't just ignore it because he is telling us, for instance, in chapter 7,

  52. that he who hears these words and does what it says is like the man who builds his house on the rock.

  53. But if you hear it and don't do it, you're like building your foundation, your house on the sand.

  54. So he expects us to obey it, but he wants us to hear the whole sermon

  55. and to be able to hear what he is saying life in the kingdom is like as this whole thing.

  56. But also, the second thing would be that when we approach this passage,

  57. I mentioned it's one of six passages where Jesus said,

  58. you've heard it said, but I say to you,

  59. just like in the rest of the Sermon on the Mount,

  60. Jesus is getting at the heart of the law.

  61. He's getting at the heart of what God would have his people to do.

  62. So keep that in mind when you hear he's giving us the spirit or the intention of the law.

  63. So our section tonight, Lewis kind of mentioned,

  64. your Bible heading might have retaliation.

  65. I entitled the sermon Responding to Injustice.

  66. A better title might be Responding to Personal Injustice,

  67. because that's what Jesus is talking about here.

  68. And he starts out in verse 38,

  69. you've heard that it was said,

  70. an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

  71. Now, why was that given in the law?

  72. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth?

  73. To understand what Jesus is about to tell us,

  74. we have to understand why he said that,

  75. or why the law said that to begin with.

  76. This was something given to the nation of Israel in the law,

  77. an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,

  78. to prevent revenge, retaliation, and excess.

  79. It was actually to prevent chaos from happening.

  80. So, for instance, you know,

  81. you damaged my eye,

  82. therefore I'm going to cut off your arm.

  83. Well, then my family member,

  84. the other person's family member,

  85. is now going to come and take both of your legs.

  86. And then my family member comes and ends a life.

  87. It's to prevent all of that from happening.

  88. So when it says an eye for an eye,

  89. it's basically saying,

  90. don't turn this into chaos.

  91. Don't let this be something that becomes

  92. personal revenge and retaliation.

  93. But it's actually something that helps society

  94. to function as a whole.

  95. In fact, many ancient legal codes had this.

  96. It's called the Lex Talionis,

  97. or the Law of Retaliation.

  98. A very ancient legal code

  99. found in many ancient societies.

  100. And it was to prevent chaos from happening,

  101. or even personal revenge.

  102. However, what is happening,

  103. when Jesus says,

  104. you have heard it said,

  105. he's addressing an error that's happening,

  106. the Jewish leaders have done

  107. a couple of things with it.

  108. they've, one, turned a negative injunction

  109. into a positive one.

  110. Meaning, they've basically said,

  111. yeah, you should actually do this to people

  112. if they've done it to you.

  113. If you have been injured,

  114. you have every right to take their eye as well.

  115. A tooth has been knocked out,

  116. you have every right to take their tooth.

  117. And they've used it to actually promote

  118. retaliation, revenge,

  119. instead of preventing it.

  120. And then the second thing is,

  121. they've encouraged the people

  122. to take out justice for themselves.

  123. Which, the eye for an eye,

  124. tooth for a tooth,

  125. that was given to the nation of Israel

  126. for the judges to make sure

  127. that bad things don't happen

  128. and society runs properly.

  129. And the Jewish leaders here

  130. have made it a matter of personal revenge,

  131. retaliation.

  132. You have every right to do this.

  133. So Jesus comes along the scene,

  134. and he says,

  135. but I tell you,

  136. verse 39,

  137. but I say to you,

  138. do not resist the one who is evil.

  139. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek,

  140. turn to him the other also.

  141. Now, this is a passage

  142. that pretty much everyone

  143. in Western civilization knows

  144. this saying about,

  145. turn the other cheek.

  146. What is this talking about?

  147. What is Jesus saying to us

  148. when he says,

  149. do not resist the one who is evil?

  150. This passage has been one

  151. that has been very misinterpreted.

  152. Every commentator kind of happens

  153. to pull out something

  154. that Tolstoy wrote about

  155. that basically said,

  156. we shouldn't even have police

  157. and judgment systems

  158. because we shouldn't resist evil.

  159. Corey would have probably read Tolstoy

  160. after reading that.

  161. I just kind of Googled it.

  162. So, but basically,

  163. that is like completely misunderstanding

  164. and misinterpreting

  165. what is being said here.

  166. He's talking about personal injustices.

  167. And just like Jesus

  168. was getting to the heart

  169. with these other passages

  170. when he said,

  171. you've heard that it was said,

  172. you shall not commit adultery,

  173. but I say to you,

  174. he who lusts after a woman

  175. commits adultery in the heart.

  176. He's getting to the heart right here

  177. of what's going on.

  178. So what lust is to adultery

  179. and what anger is to murder,

  180. instead of practicing self-justice,

  181. we entrust ourselves to the judge

  182. and the one who brings justice

  183. to the world.

  184. We're instead of insisting

  185. on our own personal rights,

  186. we're entrusting ourselves

  187. to the giver of rights.

  188. God is the judge

  189. and vengeance belongs to him.

  190. And so Jesus is saying,

  191. we're not to avenge ourselves,

  192. but entrust ourselves

  193. to the one

  194. who will bring vengeance for us.

  195. So, do we literally turn

  196. the other cheek

  197. when someone slaps our right cheek?

  198. Before we answer that,

  199. what is,

  200. when Lewis read that,

  201. did anybody find it odd

  202. that the passage says

  203. that if anyone slaps you

  204. on the right cheek,

  205. or did we just kind of gloss over that?

  206. If someone slaps you

  207. on the right cheek,

  208. like most people are right-handed

  209. and if you were left-handed,

  210. you were probably back then

  211. taught to be right-handed

  212. because it was really

  213. kind of a faux pas.

  214. If I'm to slap someone,

  215. what cheek am I going to slap?

  216. The left cheek, right?

  217. Tom's figuring it out up here, right?

  218. It's the left cheek.

  219. But if I backhand you

  220. with my right hand,

  221. I'm going to hit your right cheek.

  222. Back in Jewish society

  223. at this time,

  224. one of the biggest insults

  225. you could give to someone

  226. was to backhand them

  227. in their right cheek.

  228. It was an ultimate sign

  229. of humiliation.

  230. There were even laws

  231. that if you did that to someone,

  232. there could be like

  233. a double portion of judgment

  234. on you for doing it

  235. because it was such a humiliation,

  236. such an offense.

  237. It was a massive deal

  238. in an honor-shame culture.

  239. This was one

  240. that brought complete shame on you.

  241. So Jesus is saying,

  242. if someone does that to you,

  243. ultimate shame,

  244. completely offensive,

  245. dishonors you,

  246. probably in public,

  247. give him the other cheek also.

  248. So this would be a big deal

  249. for Jesus to say that.

  250. It's kind of like

  251. the statement of,

  252. you know,

  253. if your eye offends you,

  254. pluck it out

  255. because it's better

  256. to go into heaven

  257. with missing an eye

  258. than to go to hell

  259. with both eyes.

  260. That drastic,

  261. cut your arm off,

  262. pluck your eye out.

  263. This would feel

  264. like that same thing.

  265. You mean

  266. someone insults me like this

  267. and I'm just supposed

  268. to take it

  269. and turn the other cheek?

  270. What is Jesus saying?

  271. The point

  272. is not necessarily

  273. to follow this literally

  274. as much as,

  275. one,

  276. we do need to take it

  277. very seriously.

  278. But also to understand

  279. that to be salt and light,

  280. as he's mentioned

  281. in chapter five,

  282. to be kingdom people,

  283. we must let go

  284. of our rights

  285. to say,

  286. it's not about me,

  287. it's about King Jesus,

  288. I can do

  289. as he tells me to do

  290. and entrust him

  291. with that.

  292. Do we trust him

  293. even in situations

  294. like this?

  295. Now you might be saying,

  296. okay,

  297. you just let me

  298. off the hook there,

  299. just wait.

  300. And Jesus is not saying

  301. you can't protect yourself

  302. and you can't protect

  303. your family.

  304. He's giving us

  305. the spirit of the law

  306. and the spirit of the law

  307. here is

  308. don't seek revenge

  309. for yourself.

  310. Don't cling to your right

  311. to retaliate.

  312. That was something

  313. that was being promoted.

  314. Take vengeance

  315. for yourself.

  316. Retaliate.

  317. You have the right.

  318. Eye for an eye,

  319. tooth for a tooth.

  320. He's telling us

  321. that's not the way

  322. of the kingdom.

  323. If there's been

  324. a personal injustice

  325. done to you,

  326. entrust yourself

  327. to the Lord

  328. and his provision

  329. for you

  330. to take vengeance

  331. for you.

  332. Everything in us

  333. wants to make people

  334. pay for it

  335. when they do something

  336. to us.

  337. Even something as small

  338. as being cut off

  339. while we're driving

  340. or if you're walking

  341. the scaffolding

  342. up here

  343. above Victoria

  344. and someone just

  345. will not turn

  346. and they expect you

  347. to kind of get

  348. out of their way,

  349. that can kind of stir.

  350. Is this just me

  351. and my personal confession

  352. here?

  353. What does it stir up

  354. in us?

  355. One time I literally

  356. was like,

  357. I am not turning.

  358. I'm going to make

  359. them turn.

  360. That's terrible.

  361. That's not the kingdom

  362. way, right?

  363. The kingdom way

  364. says I'm not going

  365. to make you pay for it.

  366. I'm going to let go

  367. of my rights

  368. in order to promote

  369. the way of King Jesus.

  370. And really,

  371. do we believe

  372. what Jesus has just

  373. said in verses 11

  374. and 12?

  375. Blessed are you

  376. when others revile you

  377. and persecute you

  378. and utter all kinds

  379. of evil against you

  380. falsely on my account.

  381. Rejoice and be glad

  382. for your reward

  383. in heaven is great

  384. for so they persecuted

  385. the prophets

  386. who were before you.

  387. Can we entrust

  388. ourselves to Jesus

  389. even when we're

  390. being reviled?

  391. Even when we're

  392. being persecuted.

  393. He says rejoice

  394. and be glad?

  395. Jesus, are you

  396. crazy here?

  397. Jesus himself

  398. resisted evil.

  399. You can think of

  400. the story of the

  401. money changers

  402. in the outer courts

  403. of the temple

  404. where his commentators

  405. say he's probably

  406. preventing women

  407. and Gentiles

  408. from praying

  409. in the temple

  410. and that made him

  411. angry,

  412. righteously angry.

  413. He resisted

  414. that evil.

  415. evil.

  416. So do we need

  417. to not resist evil

  418. and turn the other cheek?

  419. Sometimes.

  420. But sometimes not.

  421. Back to our question,

  422. do we literally

  423. turn the other cheek?

  424. Remember what I said

  425. about looking at

  426. the sermon as a whole?

  427. If you wait just a little

  428. bit in the sermon,

  429. Jesus is going to tell us

  430. this in Matthew 7,

    Matthew 7:12

  431. verse 12.

  432. So whatever you wish

  433. that others would do

  434. to you,

  435. do also to them

  436. for this is the law

  437. and the prophets.

  438. We know that as the

  439. golden rule,

  440. do unto others

  441. as you would have

  442. them do unto you.

  443. And so the question

  444. would be,

  445. if you were doing

  446. something evil,

  447. would you want

  448. another person

  449. to just let you

  450. continue to do

  451. that evil?

  452. Or would the loving

  453. thing be to resist you,

  454. to confront you,

  455. to help you do

  456. the right and

  457. righteous thing?

  458. What would it look like

  459. to follow the golden

  460. rule here?

  461. If someone struck you,

  462. would you want,

  463. sorry,

  464. if you struck someone

  465. in the right cheek,

  466. would you want them

  467. to just let you

  468. persist in your anger

  469. right after Jesus

  470. has just said,

  471. if you're angry

  472. towards your brother,

  473. you've committed

  474. murder in your heart?

  475. Would you want

  476. that friend,

  477. that person,

  478. to let you persist

  479. in your anger?

  480. Do we turn

  481. the other cheek?

  482. Sometimes,

  483. but not always.

  484. And Jesus is giving

  485. us a way

  486. to have some wisdom

  487. in these circumstances

  488. by saying,

  489. first and foremost,

  490. the default mode

  491. is to let go

  492. of your rights

  493. in order to think

  494. about love

  495. of my neighbor,

  496. in order to think

  497. about the way

  498. of the kingdom

  499. and being salt

  500. and light.

  501. Jesus gives us

  502. a great example

  503. in John chapter 18

    John 18 chapter mention

  504. when he is before

  505. the high priest.

  506. He's being questioned

  507. by the high priest.

  508. The high priest

  509. questions him

  510. about what he was teaching

  511. and Jesus says,

  512. I did nothing in secret.

  513. Ask those who heard me.

  514. And when he said this,

  515. an officer struck him

  516. in the face.

  517. Presumably,

  518. this could have been

  519. a backhand.

  520. The passage

  521. doesn't tell us that,

  522. but it could have been.

  523. It could have been

  524. to the right cheek.

  525. But instead of turning

  526. the other cheek,

  527. in this moment,

  528. while he's still under trial,

  529. still on trial,

  530. chapter 18,

  531. verse 23 says,

  532. Jesus answered him,

  533. if what I said is wrong,

  534. bear witness about the wrong.

  535. But if what I said is right,

  536. why do you strike me?

  537. Instead of turning

  538. the other cheek,

  539. he actually confronts

  540. the guy with the fact

  541. that basically

  542. he's broken the law

  543. because when someone's

  544. under trial,

  545. you're not allowed

  546. to strike them.

  547. You have to treat them

  548. with dignity and respect.

  549. It would not have been loving

  550. to let the officer

  551. continue to slap him

  552. when he had done something

  553. that was clearly wrong.

  554. Before judgment

  555. has been rendered,

  556. he's not allowed

  557. to actually punish Jesus.

  558. He has to wait

  559. for judgment

  560. to be rendered.

  561. So Jesus confronts,

  562. very lovingly it seems,

  563. but just says,

  564. if what I said is right,

  565. why do you strike me?

  566. Verse 40,

  567. if anyone would sue you

  568. and take your tunic,

  569. let them have your cloak also.

  570. What is he saying here?

  571. It was actually illegal

  572. to take someone's cloak.

  573. Someone could give it

  574. as a pledge,

  575. but they would have to

  576. then return it at sundown.

  577. Why is that?

  578. Because the outer cloak

  579. was used sometimes

  580. as a blanket,

  581. sometimes as a bed.

  582. It was to keep warm at night

  583. and Jerusalem being

  584. a mile high city,

  585. like it would get cold.

  586. You couldn't take

  587. someone's cloak.

  588. And they're saying,

  589. if someone sues you

  590. for your inner garment,

  591. go ahead and give him

  592. your outer garment.

  593. The pattern is,

  594. let go of what

  595. your rights are

  596. and give.

  597. Let go of your rights

  598. and give.

  599. Now, again,

  600. taking this literally

  601. could cause us

  602. to do something

  603. that's unwise.

  604. Just promoting something

  605. that's evil behavior even.

  606. However,

  607. he says that

  608. we are to be reconciled

  609. to our brother.

  610. He just said that

  611. in chapter 5, verse 25.

  612. The point is to be

  613. reconciled to your brother

  614. and make sure that

  615. he has what he needs.

  616. In Christ's kingdom,

  617. instead of fighting

  618. for personal rights,

  619. we lay down those rights

  620. for the sake of others.

  621. Are we willing to do that?

  622. Verse 41.

  623. If anyone forces you

  624. to go one mile,

  625. go with him two miles.

  626. What is this all about?

  627. You've probably heard this.

  628. That it relates

  629. to a common practice

  630. whereby in Roman law,

  631. a Roman soldier

  632. could require a person

  633. to carry his gear.

  634. Now, the gear

  635. might be weapons,

  636. supplies.

  637. They estimate

  638. that that might have weighed

  639. like 60 to 80 pounds.

  640. definitely enough

  641. to be a burden.

  642. And you can just imagine

  643. that this was

  644. something that was done

  645. to actually humiliate

  646. other people sometimes.

  647. It was abused.

  648. A Roman soldier

  649. might do that

  650. just to be a bully.

  651. In fact,

  652. if anybody is like me

  653. growing up in the 80s,

  654. there were these movies

  655. where the bully

  656. would make you

  657. carry their book bag.

  658. It's kind of that same thing

  659. where it's like,

  660. this is not okay.

  661. This is not fair.

  662. And Jesus says,

  663. instead of just taking

  664. it that one mile,

  665. take it another mile.

  666. Take it two miles.

  667. Now, if you take this literally,

  668. that could mean

  669. that after I take it

  670. the two miles,

  671. I just drop it on his foot.

  672. Is that the way

  673. of the kingdom?

  674. But instead,

  675. he's getting at the heart.

  676. Let go of your rights

  677. and give.

  678. Give more

  679. than is actually required.

  680. The kingdom life

  681. means you would do this

  682. even for those

  683. that would be your enemies.

  684. Think about

  685. who he's talking about here.

  686. Who were the Romans?

  687. They were intruders.

  688. They were oppressors.

  689. They were my enemies.

  690. In fact,

  691. the Jewish people

  692. were looking for a Messiah

  693. who would come

  694. to deliver them

  695. from the Romans

  696. or other oppressors.

  697. Even to your enemies,

  698. you give.

  699. In the kingdom,

  700. you are blessed

  701. when you're persecuted

  702. for the sake of Jesus.

  703. Verse 42.

  704. Give to the one

  705. who begs from you

  706. and do not refuse

  707. the one

  708. who would borrow from you.

  709. What's he saying?

  710. Don't cling

  711. to your money

  712. and possessions.

  713. What would you want

  714. someone to do for you?

  715. Now,

  716. you're in this situation.

  717. Because the golden rule says,

  718. hey,

  719. what would we have

  720. them do for us?

  721. Right?

  722. How do I want

  723. to be treated?

  724. What if you were

  725. the one that was begging?

  726. What if you were the one

  727. that was wanting

  728. to borrow?

  729. Would you want them

  730. to give?

  731. Sometimes yes.

  732. But what if

  733. you've gone into debt

  734. because of something sinful?

  735. You didn't obey the law

  736. in the way that you

  737. borrowed money

  738. or you borrowed

  739. resources?

  740. What if,

  741. which could happen

  742. back then,

  743. you had a gambling addiction

  744. and you owe a lot of money?

  745. What if you had

  746. other self-destructive

  747. behaviors

  748. that would cause you

  749. to be a beggar?

  750. Some of these

  751. are found in Proverbs.

  752. Proverbs talks about

  753. sluggards,

  754. drunkards and gluttons,

  755. lovers of pleasure.

  756. They will all come

  757. to poverty.

  758. Several passages

  759. that talk about that.

  760. What if you were

  761. in a self-destructive behavior?

  762. Would you want

  763. someone to help you

  764. persist in that?

  765. Is that the loving

  766. thing to do

  767. to let you borrow money

  768. when you beg

  769. or ask them

  770. at that time?

  771. Sometimes yes.

  772. Sometimes no.

  773. But are we willing

  774. to let go of our rights

  775. in order

  776. to give to someone?

  777. And sometimes

  778. when someone asks

  779. us for money,

  780. it feels like

  781. a personal injustice.

  782. Jesus,

  783. I'm working hard

  784. for my money.

  785. I'm doing what

  786. God's called me to do.

  787. And you're just going

  788. to sit there

  789. and ask

  790. and beg?

  791. Why don't you

  792. go get a job?

  793. We have these thoughts,

  794. right?

  795. Why don't you

  796. go do this?

  797. The way of the kingdom

  798. says we let go

  799. of what is owed to us

  800. and we give.

  801. But we do

  802. what the loving

  803. thing is.

  804. We are willing

  805. to inconvenience

  806. ourselves

  807. in order for others

  808. to have

  809. what they need.

  810. Now do you see

  811. the pattern

  812. in these

  813. four things?

  814. Give

  815. the other cheek.

  816. Give

  817. also

  818. your cloak.

  819. Give

  820. another mile.

  821. Give

  822. to him

  823. who asks.

  824. In other words,

  825. give your resources.

  826. When you are

  827. facing

  828. personal

  829. injustice,

  830. don't focus

  831. on the rights

  832. that you have

  833. to retaliate,

  834. but have

  835. a spirit

  836. of giving.

  837. How can I

  838. love this person

  839. and treat them

  840. the way

  841. in which

  842. I wish

  843. they would

  844. treat me?

  845. Now,

  846. this

  847. sounds like

  848. one of those

  849. things,

  850. like,

  851. I'm not sure,

  852. Ryan,

  853. if you're trying

  854. to let me

  855. off the hook

  856. here of having

  857. to actually

  858. obey this,

  859. or,

  860. like,

  861. this seems

  862. like a very

  863. gray area

  864. thing,

  865. like,

  866. help me know

  867. what to do.

  868. The way

  869. of the

  870. kingdom

  871. is learning

  872. the heart

  873. of the

  874. master,

  875. and when we

  876. learn the

  877. heart of the

  878. master,

  879. we can

  880. obey him,

  881. because we

  882. can entrust

  883. ourselves to

  884. him,

  885. even doing

  886. things that

  887. seem really,

  888. really hard.

  889. So we

  890. entrust

  891. ourselves

  892. to him

  893. to do

  894. what he's

  895. calling us

  896. to do,

  897. because he

  898. does expect

  899. us to

  900. obey him

  901. in the

  902. Sermon on

  903. the Mount.

  904. One

  905. illustration

  906. that has

  907. been given

  908. from the

  909. pulpit

  910. since I've

  911. been here,

  912. so sorry

  913. for the

  914. repeat,

  915. but I

  916. couldn't

  917. help it,

  918. that I

  919. think one

  920. of the

  921. best

  922. illustrations

  923. of this

  924. going the

  925. extra mile,

  926. giving your

  927. cloak also

  928. comes from

  929. Les Mis.

  930. When

  931. Jean Valjean

  932. comes into

  933. the church,

  934. they invite

  935. him in

  936. as the

  937. guest,

  938. they give

  939. him the

  940. warm fire,

  941. they give

  942. him wine,

  943. they give

  944. him food,

  945. they give

  946. him a place

  947. to sleep

  948. and restore

  949. himself,

  950. and what

  951. does he

  952. do?

  953. He steals

  954. the silver

  955. and he

  956. leaves.

  957. He's caught

  958. by the

  959. authorities,

  960. they drag

  961. him back

  962. to the

  963. priest,

  964. and they

  965. say,

  966. we caught

  967. the one

  968. who stole

  969. from you.

  970. He had

  971. the audacity

  972. to say

  973. that you

  974. had given

  975. this to

  976. him.

  977. He said,

  978. he is

  979. correct,

  980. the priest

  981. says,

  982. but why

  983. did you

  984. leave so

  985. early,

  986. sir?

  987. You

  988. left the

  989. best part

  990. and he

  991. reaches over

  992. and gives

  993. him the

  994. candlesticks

  995. that are

  996. worth more

  997. than all

  998. the other

  999. silver.

  1000. He gives

  1001. him more.

  1002. And you

  1003. just see,

  1004. like,

  1005. I watch

  1006. this scene

  1007. and it

  1008. just,

  1009. I know

  1010. you're not

  1011. going to

  1012. believe this

  1013. as an

  1014. American,

  1015. it makes

  1016. me really

  1017. emotional,

  1018. probably

  1019. doesn't do

  1020. the same

  1021. thing it

  1022. does for

  1023. you,

  1024. but I

  1025. just get

  1026. emotional

  1027. even

  1028. watching

  1029. this to

  1030. say,

  1031. this is

  1032. the gospel

  1033. of grace

  1034. that we

  1035. stole

  1036. and deserve

  1037. complete

  1038. condemnation,

  1039. yet he

  1040. lavishes

  1041. his grace

  1042. on us.

  1043. You

  1044. left the

  1045. most

  1046. expensive

  1047. part.

  1048. Jesus

  1049. tells us,

  1050. give the

  1051. other cheek,

  1052. give your

  1053. cloak also,

  1054. give another

  1055. mile,

  1056. give your

  1057. resources.

  1058. All of

  1059. us here

  1060. can think

  1061. of someone

  1062. who's

  1063. tried to

  1064. humiliate

  1065. us,

  1066. or take

  1067. advantage

  1068. of us,

  1069. or maybe

  1070. has just

  1071. asked too

  1072. much of

  1073. us.

  1074. So we

  1075. can just

  1076. think of

  1077. those times

  1078. where,

  1079. man,

  1080. how could

  1081. I let

  1082. go of

  1083. my rights

  1084. and give?

  1085. And the

  1086. answer is,

  1087. how could

  1088. we best

  1089. love our

  1090. neighbor?

  1091. What is

  1092. the right

  1093. thing here

  1094. that would,

  1095. how would I

  1096. want to be

  1097. treated in

  1098. this so

  1099. that would

  1100. lead me

  1101. in the

  1102. way of

  1103. the

  1104. kingdom?

  1105. Jesus

  1106. said,

  1107. you are

  1108. blessed

  1109. when others

  1110. revile you

  1111. on his

  1112. account?

  1113. Do we

  1114. believe that?

  1115. Do we

  1116. believe that

  1117. when we

  1118. suffer

  1119. persecution

  1120. for doing

  1121. what's

  1122. right,

  1123. we are

  1124. blessed?

  1125. What should

  1126. you feel

  1127. when you

  1128. face personal

  1129. injustices?

  1130. Could we

  1131. do what

  1132. Matthew 5

  1133. 12 says

  1134. when it

  1135. says rejoice

  1136. and be

  1137. glad?

  1138. Could we

  1139. rejoice in

  1140. facing personal

  1141. injustices

  1142. because we're

  1143. suffering for

  1144. doing what

  1145. is right?

  1146. Paul says

  1147. something similar

  1148. to this in

  1149. Romans 12

  1150. 17-21

  1151. He says,

  1152. Repay no one

  1153. evil for evil

  1154. but give

  1155. thought to do

  1156. what is honorable

  1157. in the sight of

  1158. all.

  1159. If possible,

  1160. so far as it

  1161. depends on you,

  1162. live peaceably

  1163. with all.

  1164. Beloved,

  1165. never avenge

  1166. yourself,

  1167. but leave it

  1168. to the wrath

  1169. of God

  1170. for it is

  1171. written,

  1172. vengeance is

  1173. mine,

  1174. I will

  1175. repay,

  1176. says the

  1177. Lord.

  1178. To the

  1179. contrary,

  1180. if your

  1181. enemy is

  1182. hungry,

  1183. feed him.

  1184. If he's

  1185. thirsty,

  1186. give him

  1187. something to

  1188. drink.

  1189. For by

  1190. doing so,

  1191. you will

  1192. heap burning

  1193. coals on

  1194. his head.

  1195. Do not

  1196. be overcome

  1197. by evil,

  1198. but overcome

  1199. evil with

  1200. good.

  1201. Does all of

  1202. that sound

  1203. ridiculous?

  1204. Overcome

  1205. evil with

  1206. good?

  1207. ultimately,

  1208. Jesus didn't

  1209. resist evil,

  1210. but he

  1211. suffered the

  1212. greatest

  1213. injustice

  1214. that has

  1215. ever been

  1216. known to

  1217. man,

  1218. and he

  1219. did it

  1220. for us.

  1221. Ultimately,

  1222. he willingly

  1223. gave the

  1224. other cheek

  1225. in order to

  1226. be the

  1227. sacrifice

  1228. for our

  1229. sins.

  1230. He didn't

  1231. just give

  1232. his tunic,

  1233. he gave

  1234. his outer

  1235. cloak,

  1236. he was

  1237. stripped

  1238. down of

  1239. all of

  1240. his clothing

  1241. in order

  1242. to bear

  1243. our shame.

  1244. Jesus not

  1245. only went

  1246. the extra

  1247. mile,

  1248. he went

  1249. the whole

  1250. way to

  1251. suffer the

  1252. wrath of

  1253. God on

  1254. our behalf.

  1255. He gave

  1256. his very

  1257. life,

  1258. the only

  1259. one who

  1260. deserved

  1261. honor and

  1262. glory and

  1263. praise.

  1264. Gave it

  1265. all up so

  1266. that we

  1267. could have

  1268. life with

  1269. him,

  1270. a relationship

  1271. with God.

  1272. God

  1273. because of

  1274. this,

  1275. we have

  1276. life.

  1277. He took

  1278. on our

  1279. sin and

  1280. gave us

  1281. his

  1282. righteousness

  1283. so that

  1284. through

  1285. repentance

  1286. and faith

  1287. we could

  1288. be redeemed.

  1289. Does all

  1290. of this

  1291. sound

  1292. ridiculous?

  1293. That's how

  1294. life has

  1295. been given

  1296. to us.

  1297. Follow

  1298. in the

  1299. way of

  1300. our

  1301. master.

  1302. How could

  1303. he do

  1304. this?

  1305. Peter

  1306. addresses

  1307. that in

  1308. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1309. chapter 2

  1310. so I'm

  1311. glad you

  1312. asked.

  1313. When he

  1314. was reviled

  1315. he did

  1316. not revile

  1317. in return.

  1318. When he

  1319. suffered

  1320. he did

  1321. not

  1322. threaten

  1323. but

  1324. continued

  1325. entrusting

  1326. himself

  1327. to him

  1328. who judges

  1329. justly.

  1330. He himself

  1331. bore our

  1332. sins in

  1333. his body

  1334. on the

  1335. tree

  1336. that we

  1337. might die

  1338. to sin

  1339. and live

  1340. to

  1341. righteousness.

  1342. By his

  1343. wounds

  1344. you have

  1345. been healed.

  1346. He kept

  1347. entrusting

  1348. himself

  1349. to the

  1350. one

  1351. who judges

  1352. justly.

  1353. Jesus

  1354. is not

  1355. just giving

  1356. us laws

  1357. to obey.

  1358. He's not

  1359. giving us

  1360. a new

  1361. law.

  1362. He's

  1363. calling

  1364. us

  1365. to life

  1366. as he

  1367. says in

  1368. John

    John 10 chapter mention

  1369. chapter 10

  1370. abundant

  1371. life.

  1372. The

  1373. kingdom

  1374. life.

  1375. A life

  1376. of flourishing.

  1377. Life

  1378. as it

  1379. should

  1380. be

  1381. as

  1382. Corey

  1383. has

  1384. reminded

  1385. us.

  1386. Jesus

  1387. says I

  1388. came

  1389. that they

  1390. may have

  1391. life

  1392. and have

  1393. it

  1394. abundantly.

  1395. People

  1396. of the

  1397. kingdom

  1398. are people

  1399. who give

  1400. even in

  1401. the face

  1402. of personal

  1403. injustice

  1404. done to

  1405. us.

  1406. This

  1407. should be

  1408. our default

  1409. mode.

  1410. We're not

  1411. getting let

  1412. off the

  1413. hook by

  1414. saying well

  1415. if you

  1416. take this

  1417. literally

  1418. you can

  1419. do some

  1420. unwise

  1421. things.

  1422. We're not

  1423. being let

  1424. off the

  1425. hook

  1426. in that

  1427. way.

  1428. Instead

  1429. we're

  1430. being called

  1431. to something

  1432. higher.

  1433. The default

  1434. mode is

  1435. to give.

  1436. to entrust

  1437. ourselves

  1438. to the

  1439. righteous

  1440. judge.

  1441. And you

  1442. never know

  1443. it could

  1444. lead to

  1445. someone else

  1446. having

  1447. life.

  1448. And that

  1449. would be

  1450. our hope

  1451. that we

  1452. would be

  1453. salt and

  1454. light and

  1455. that people

  1456. would see

  1457. our good

  1458. works and

  1459. glorify our

  1460. Father who

  1461. is in

  1462. heaven.

  1463. Like Jesus

  1464. said in

  1465. chapter 5

  1466. verse 16.

  1467. So let's

  1468. follow our

  1469. Lord into

  1470. this

  1471. abundant

  1472. life.

  1473. Let's

  1474. pray.

  1475. Our

  1476. Father when

  1477. we read

  1478. your

  1479. scriptures

  1480. when we

  1481. read this

  1482. passage

  1483. it can

  1484. lead to

  1485. a sense

  1486. of how

  1487. in the

  1488. world could

  1489. we ever

  1490. obey

  1491. Jesus'

  1492. commands?

  1493. How could

  1494. we ever

  1495. lift the

  1496. life he's

  1497. called us

  1498. to?

  1499. And that

  1500. poverty of

  1501. spirit is

  1502. where we're

  1503. supposed to

  1504. be.

  1505. We say

  1506. we can't

  1507. live this.

  1508. We have

  1509. to rely

  1510. on you.

  1511. We are

  1512. completely

  1513. dependent.

  1514. We are

  1515. completely

  1516. helpless

  1517. and hopeless

  1518. without

  1519. Jesus.

  1520. And Lord

  1521. Jesus you

  1522. live the

  1523. life that

  1524. we couldn't

  1525. live.

  1526. So that

  1527. you could

  1528. exchange your

  1529. righteousness

  1530. for our

  1531. sin so

  1532. that we

  1533. could become

  1534. the righteousness

  1535. of God

  1536. in you.

  1537. So thank

  1538. you Lord

  1539. Jesus.

  1540. Thank you

  1541. for your

  1542. sacrifice for

  1543. the way that

  1544. you didn't

  1545. resist evil

  1546. that you

  1547. turned the

  1548. other cheek

  1549. that you

  1550. went the

  1551. extra mile

  1552. that you

  1553. gave everything

  1554. in order

  1555. that we

  1556. might have

  1557. life.

  1558. Now empower

  1559. us we

  1560. pray to

  1561. live that

  1562. life in

  1563. our community

  1564. in our

  1565. city before

  1566. our family

  1567. and our

  1568. neighbors

  1569. our

  1570. co-workers

  1571. our

  1572. friends.

  1573. Help us

  1574. to be salt

  1575. and light

  1576. not so

  1577. that people

  1578. say man

  1579. what a

  1580. good guy

  1581. what a

  1582. good awesome

  1583. person she

  1584. is but

  1585. they would

  1586. glorify you

  1587. our father

  1588. who is in

  1589. heaven and

  1590. we pray all

  1591. this in the

  1592. precious name

  1593. of Jesus.

  1594. Amen.
