  1. our way through a series on biblical counseling for everybody.

  2. And so I'll pray for us, and then we can get moving.

  3. So let's pray together.

  4. Lord, we thank You for this time.

  5. We thank You for the opportunity to gather.

  6. And we pray now that You would help us as we look at Your Word

  7. and try to understand more and more how to be people who come alongside one another

  8. to support one another, encourage one another,

  9. help one another step more and more towards maturity in Christ.

  10. So we ask for that help by the Spirit.

  11. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  12. All right, so there's a handout.

  13. Simon's got handouts at the back if you need one.

  14. All right, so we have been working through,

  15. trying to understand more and more some principles,

  16. some practical tips on how to come alongside one another

  17. as Christian friends, counselors,

  18. people who support one another in the walk of faith.

  19. And so our goal in this series is just to grow into that more and more.

  20. So tonight what we're going to do is begin a case study.

  21. We'll do one case study tonight,

  22. and I'll be teaching in this series two or three more times,

  23. and every time I'm going to do a case study.

  24. So a case study of examining a particular issue,

  25. some of the most common issues I'll pick,

  26. and we'll try to look at how might you help somebody else walk through that issue as a Christian.

  27. So some ways to think about it and look at it,

  28. really just applying some of the things Ryan talked about last time.

  29. All right, so let's get into it.

  30. The case study tonight is going to be dealing with the problem of self-esteem and ego,

  31. which is a universal issue according to Genesis 3.

  32. So let's think about that together.

  33. But first let me just remind you of a couple things we've said already

  34. just to kind of reorient into what we're doing here.

  35. We are dealing with something that's very similar to the issue of evangelism,

  36. and that's that a lot of times in church we get the sense that,

  37. we've had the sense maybe in the past that ministers are the primary ones doing the work of ministry,

  38. evangelism, counseling, meeting people's spiritual needs.

  39. And I've got here printed Ephesians 4, 11 to 12,

  40. and it says here that Jesus gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers

  41. to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

  42. So here we see very explicit instructions from Paul

  43. that tell us that all the times God gives gifts to people in the church to lead the church,

  44. from the time of the apostles to evangelists to the missionary evangelists like Paul

  45. to the prophets, which is just a preacher really, teachers.

  46. He gives gifts not so that the people with the gifts will do all the ministry,

  47. but so that the people will example the ministry for everybody to do, to equip all the saints.

  48. So if you're a Christian tonight, it's your job, our job together,

  49. to do the work of ministry, to do it all together.

  50. That's what we learn here.

  51. And so Richard Baxter here says, this is his reflection.

  52. This is a 17th century minister.

  53. It was quite famous at the time, English minister.

  54. He says,

  55. Counseling is for resolving our doubts,

  56. helping against our sins,

  57. helping fight our sins,

  58. for direction in our duties,

  59. and for an increase of knowledge of saving grace.

  60. So he's saying that we're all meant to come alongside one of each other for at least those purposes.

  61. And that's a calling that's universal,

  62. that comes across the whole church.

  63. And so we said in week one that there is a gap in our lives.

  64. For all of us, we all feel this gap between who we are right now,

  65. the negative emotions you experience,

  66. the ways that you struggle with pride or a sin pattern that you know in your life right now,

  67. in the person you will one day be in Jesus Christ.

  68. So one day,

  69. every single issue that you struggle with that is sucking away your joy,

  70. will be gone.

  71. One day.

  72. So there's a gap.

  73. When Christ comes to get you,

  74. he will renew you so fully,

  75. that you will be so full of joy,

  76. that you will only have faint memories of the problems you used to face.

  77. Now what counseling is there for,

  78. is to help us in the path of sanctification.

  79. What we're trying to do is to close that gap as much as we can in this life, right?

  80. That's sanctification.

  81. Moving from being called justification to the moment of glorification,

  82. where we will become fully like Jesus.

  83. We want to close that gap as much as we can.

  84. Not simply to make progress,

  85. not simply to check that off our to-do list,

  86. not out of performance,

  87. but because actually you can have joy.

  88. You can have real joy the more you grow.

  89. And so we're trying to help each other grow.

  90. That's really all we're talking about in this series.

  91. And so Hebrews 3.13 gives you a really explicit command about that.

  92. So if we want to ask, where do we get this from in the Bible?

  93. Hebrews 3.13, which is, Hebrews is a sermon, right?

  94. And the preacher says to the church in Hebrews 3,

  95. exhort one another every day as long as it is called today.

  96. In other words, he's saying,

  97. while you have today, exhort one another.

  98. Now, exhort sounds like a negative word,

  99. but it's the Greek word parakaleo.

  100. And the Greek word parakaleo simply means

  101. one who comes alongside somebody else and walks with them.

  102. So the paraclete in the New Testament is who?

  103. The Holy Spirit.

  104. Yeah, so exactly.

  105. We're being told in a way that's similar to the way God comes,

  106. the Spirit ministers to us,

  107. that we are charged to come alongside other people

  108. and minister to them.

  109. And so we're just calling that counseling.

  110. Parakaleo, one another.

  111. Come alongside one another.

  112. That's it.

  113. And so we want to universalize this.

  114. We want everybody in our church to have a dear Christian friend

  115. that they are walking alongside in their life,

  116. that's talking with them about their issues,

  117. that you're able to confess your sins to one another,

  118. you're able to grow together in the same direction.

  119. That's all this really means.

  120. So let's think about this case study.

  121. How can you help somebody?

  122. And, of course, ourselves.

  123. This applies to all of us,

  124. but we're trying to think how we can help other people

  125. with the issue of esteem, self-esteem and ego.

  126. So the first, I've just listed some things to pay attention to here.

  127. There's eight.

  128. The first couple are prerequisites.

  129. First couple things are,

  130. before we deal and help other people in our lives,

  131. we need to be in a path where we are focusing on our own devotional life.

  132. That's really all.

  133. So number one,

  134. we must be actively addressing our own negative emotions

  135. and devotion before God in order to help other people.

  136. So all I mean by that is

  137. not,

  138. are you extremely spiritually mature

  139. and therefore ready to walk alongside somebody else in the Christian life?

  140. That's not the question here at all or the idea here at all.

  141. Instead,

  142. are you limping with the Lord

  143. in a forward-facing direction?

  144. Limping, struggling forward.

  145. That's really the idea.

  146. So do you have a fight in you for a devotional life?

  147. Do you have a fight in you to know yourself enough to say,

  148. these are my idols?

  149. Do you have enough fight right now in your heart to say,

  150. I'm able to look at myself and recognize the hidden sins?

  151. So, and I want that.

  152. That's all we're talking about.

  153. A real life,

  154. not of total victory,

  155. because that's glorification,

  156. but a life where you are intentionally seeking sanctification.

  157. So that's where we've got to be.

  158. That's a prereq for being able to help other people.

  159. So as long as we can sit alongside somebody else

  160. who's walking the path of the Christian life,

  161. but maybe struggling and say,

  162. me too.

  163. This is how I've been fighting that.

  164. This is how I've been dealing with that.

  165. That's really what we're talking about here.

  166. Now secondly,

  167. remember the principles of

  168. parakaleo,

  169. of coming alongside one another.

  170. Number two.

  171. Now I'm not going to go through these

  172. because this is what we did

  173. the first couple meetups for this series.

  174. But I'll just list them.

  175. Number one,

  176. come and meet with Christian friends,

  177. quick to listen,

  178. active listening,

  179. ready to hear.

  180. Number two,

  181. pray for compassion and understanding

  182. prior to meeting with them.

  183. Be very intentional about that.

  184. Number three,

  185. meet them where they are.

  186. So don't be surprised by their lack of growth.

  187. You know,

  188. so if somebody confesses something to you

  189. and you immediately,

  190. it's like,

  191. goodness gracious,

  192. you know,

  193. that doesn't,

  194. they don't want to meet with you anymore.

  195. Okay.

  196. They're,

  197. they feel like they've,

  198. they've been the object of your gaze.

  199. They want somebody who can say,

  200. I want to help.

  201. I want to walk alongside you in this.

  202. Number four,

  203. remember the goal.

  204. The goal is encouragement,

  205. building up.

  206. The goal is to help them take a step.

  207. Your dear friend,

  208. to take a step towards Christ.

  209. Trust,

  210. however that might look.

  211. Number five,

  212. be ready to carry their burden with them.

  213. To say,

  214. you know,

  215. I'll,

  216. I'll stick with you in this as long as it takes,

  217. as long as you want me to.

  218. Number six,

  219. be trustworthy.

  220. It's between you and them.

  221. It's,

  222. it's just you guys.

  223. Only expand that circle if they're,

  224. if they want you to,

  225. if you ask permission.

  226. And then number seven,

  227. remember that all scripture is useful.

  228. So we've got to have some ability.

  229. So this is where the counseling comes in.

  230. This is where the parakaleoing really becomes effective.

  231. It's an ability to take the Bible

  232. and to take God's word

  233. and apply it to people's lives.

  234. So some ability,

  235. not,

  236. not like you've been to seminary,

  237. nothing like that,

  238. not at all,

  239. but simply,

  240. and sometimes you go to seminary

  241. and you,

  242. you walk away

  243. and you're not as good as you were before.

  244. Maybe,

  245. but an ability,

  246. a heartfelt ability to take a text

  247. and to help somebody else feel,

  248. feel the power of that text for them.

  249. So that's,

  250. that's what we mean by case study.

  251. Okay.

  252. So let's talk about the problem

  253. for 15 minutes of esteem and ego.

  254. What is that problem?

  255. So we're listening to a dear friend.

  256. We're looking at our own hearts.

  257. We're recognizing a problem

  258. with what is called self-esteem.

  259. Okay.

  260. Let me try,

  261. let's see if anybody's willing.

  262. What do you,

  263. what do we mean by,

  264. what do you think of?

  265. I should ask,

  266. let me ask it this way.

  267. What do you think of

  268. when I mentioned the problem

  269. of esteem and ego?

  270. Any synonyms,

  271. any just single word answers

  272. or a full sentence,

  273. either way,

  274. but any thoughts?

  275. Pride,

  276. yeah.

  277. So pride or despair.

  278. Yeah.

  279. Pride and despair.

  280. Yeah.

  281. I think that's,

  282. that's insightful.

  283. Come back around to that.

  284. Yep.

  285. You can have low self-esteem

  286. and feel so inferior

  287. that it becomes

  288. an inferiority complex,

  289. which is a reverse type

  290. of pride,

  291. right?

  292. Yeah.

  293. Good.

  294. Yeah.

  295. Really good,

  296. thoughtful answers there.

  297. So all we mean by this

  298. is the problem of esteem.

  299. What is esteem?

  300. Esteem is estimation,

  301. right?

  302. There's a family of words there,

  303. and it means the,

  304. the,

  305. the inward look at yourself

  306. to ask the question,

  307. do I have value?

  308. So when you esteem yourself,

  309. the most basic sense of that word

  310. etymologically is,

  311. am I valuable?

  312. Do I have value?

  313. And you can have high self-esteem,

  314. right?

  315. Which is very obvious,

  316. big,

  317. boastful pride,

  318. right?

  319. So we,

  320. we know somebody,

  321. we know if we're listening

  322. carefully to a friend,

  323. if we're walking

  324. alongside them,

  325. we can usually recognize

  326. pretty obviously

  327. if they struggle

  328. with boasting.

  329. That's a sure sign

  330. of a,

  331. of a high self-esteem issue.

  332. Another sign would be

  333. constantly turning

  334. conversations

  335. back to themselves.

  336. Another sign would be

  337. one-upmanship,

  338. right?

  339. So a constant need

  340. to tell a better story

  341. than the story

  342. you just told.

  343. And we can think

  344. of hundreds of more ways

  345. where high self-esteem,

  346. arrogant self-esteem,

  347. a high regard of self

  348. comes out very clearly

  349. and very explicitly.

  350. And then,

  351. like Jean mentioned,

  352. you can have a very low

  353. view of self.

  354. So,

  355. some,

  356. some folks really struggle

  357. with self-loathing

  358. and self-hatred

  359. and they're asking

  360. the question,

  361. am I worth anything?

  362. Am I valuable?

  363. And so we're always running,

  364. every single person,

  365. so the reason I chose this

  366. is because there's nobody

  367. that's not running

  368. this rat race,

  369. alright?

  370. There's nobody

  371. that's not on this hamster wheel.

  372. It's just where are you

  373. with it?

  374. That's all.

  375. So there's a sense

  376. in which we never graduate

  377. from being

  378. psychological S1s.

  379. It's a psychological S1.

  380. It's where you walk

  381. into every room

  382. and you think,

  383. what does everybody

  384. in this room

  385. think about me?

  386. Right?

  387. That's the psychology

  388. of an S1.

  389. And,

  390. and that's,

  391. that's true of all of us

  392. in a sense.

  393. So that happens at work,

  394. that happens in the local church,

  395. that happens.

  396. And you better believe

  397. that ministers are incredibly prone.

  398. Better believe that,

  399. that they're in the hamster race

  400. and the rat race,

  401. hamster wheel and rat race

  402. every week of,

  403. I'm only as valuable

  404. as the sermon was

  405. last weekend.

  406. Right?

  407. That's something

  408. that has to be mortified

  409. constantly

  410. in a minister's life.

  411. And so we're all living

  412. in this issue

  413. of ego and esteem.

  414. So it's a really common problem.

  415. I'll give you a couple more examples.

  416. If you're a parent at all,

  417. or if you've worked

  418. with kids and teens,

  419. you see it.

  420. Kids and teens wear this

  421. much more outwardly

  422. and explicitly.

  423. But,

  424. the need to perform

  425. is a need that we never graduate from.

  426. And so,

  427. all of us could probably

  428. tell stories

  429. of our own personal struggles

  430. with this in the workplace,

  431. in the university,

  432. in family.

  433. It happens all the time

  434. in family.

  435. Even people vying for love

  436. between parents

  437. or spouse or sibling.

  438. So we're always running this.

  439. Okay, let me ask you.

  440. Where might you take somebody

  441. to help them deal with this?

  442. Number four says here,

  443. talk briefly maybe

  444. about your own struggles

  445. in ego

  446. and low self-esteem

  447. or high self-esteem,

  448. but then let me jump

  449. to number five.

  450. This is where counseling

  451. starts to really happen.

  452. And that's when you can

  453. effectively,

  454. meaningfully,

  455. sincerely

  456. use what God says

  457. to help somebody's life,

  458. to help their heart

  459. and soul.

  460. Alright, so,

  461. let me ask a question again.

  462. Any passages,

  463. any stories,

  464. anything that comes

  465. to your mind,

  466. okay if not,

  467. but I think there's

  468. more than one answer

  469. to this,

  470. to dealing with the problem

  471. of self-esteem

  472. and pride,

  473. low self-esteem,

  474. high self-esteem,

  475. really there's

  476. the same types

  477. of solutions

  478. that we need?

  479. Yeah.

  480. Yeah.

  481. Yeah.

  482. Yeah, so,

  483. you know,

  484. you can think of

  485. the steadfast love

  486. of the Lord

  487. in some of the Psalms.

  488. He is my refuge,

  489. my strength,

  490. my ever-present shield,

  491. Psalm 3,

  492. a shield all around me,

  493. no matter what

  494. anybody thinks about me.

  495. Yeah.

  496. So,

  497. we walk in every room

  498. and we think,

  499. at the bottom of our souls,

  500. what does everybody

  501. in this room

  502. think about me?

  503. What other passages

  504. might help us

  505. deal with that?

  506. Yeah.

  507. Yeah.

  508. Yeah,

  509. that's good.

  510. Yeah,

  511. Christ's recovery

  512. of Peter's heart

  513. after such shame.

  514. Peter went back

  515. to fishing,

  516. right,

  517. because that was

  518. his original day job

  519. before Jesus

  520. has called him

  521. because he thought,

  522. I'm out,

  523. I'm out.

  524. You know,

  525. I denied Christ,

  526. I'm on the outside

  527. looking in,

  528. he will never love me again

  529. and yet he comes to him

  530. and says,

  531. get out of the boat,

  532. come to the shore,

  533. let's have breakfast together,

  534. right,

  535. that's good.

  536. That's a nice narratival

  537. story of what Christ

  538. has done

  539. that could be used.

  540. Let me point you

  541. to one tonight

  542. that I think

  543. is really helpful

  544. and I've used this

  545. in prayer quite often.

  546. I've used this

  547. on my heart.

  548. This has been a passage

  549. that I've come back

  550. to constantly

  551. to deal with

  552. the issues of ego

  553. and it is

  554. in 1 Corinthians 4.

  555. So,

  556. if you were to read

  557. the full section,

  558. you would go

  559. from probably

  560. 1 Corinthians

  561. midway through

  562. chapter 3

  563. through chapter 4

  564. with somebody

  565. but let me just

  566. point you to

  567. 1 Corinthians 4

  568. and I'll just read

  569. a couple verses

  570. for us

  571. just from

  572. verse 2

  573. for a few

  574. verses.

  575. Paul says,

  576. moreover,

  577. it's required

  578. of stewards

  579. that they be found

  580. faithful.

  581. He's talking about

  582. pastors,

  583. ministers there.

  584. But with me,

  585. it is a very small thing.

  586. It's a very small thing.

  587. I've learned,

  588. he's telling us,

  589. to make this a small thing

  590. in my life.

  591. That I should be judged

  592. by you

  593. or by any

  594. human court.

  595. In fact,

  596. I do not even judge myself.

  597. I'm not currently aware

  598. of anything against myself

  599. but I am not thereby

  600. acquitted.

  601. It is the Lord

  602. who judges me.

  603. Okay,

  604. in this passage,

  605. Paul is

  606. dealing with an issue

  607. in the Corinthian church

  608. that he had planted

  609. where

  610. Apollos

  611. and Peter

  612. had come through later

  613. and everybody's been

  614. saying in Corinth,

  615. Peter's better than Paul,

  616. Apollos is better

  617. than Peter

  618. and Paul.

  619. Apollos was such

  620. a better preacher

  621. than Paul ever was

  622. and

  623. then they're saying,

  624. then others are saying,

  625. Apollos discipled me

  626. so I rank

  627. before you

  628. because Paul,

  629. you know,

  630. wasn't as good

  631. of a public speaker

  632. as Apollos was

  633. and so there's all

  634. these sorts of issues

  635. going on like that.

  636. So everybody's playing

  637. the comparison game.

  638. Everybody is

  639. and Paul is writing

  640. to deal with that problem

  641. and Paul,

  642. like he does

  643. in other places,

  644. is saying,

  645. I have learned

  646. in my time

  647. with the Lord,

  648. my devotional life,

  649. a secret,

  650. a secret of contentment

  651. and the secret

  652. of contentment

  653. is this,

  654. I do not care

  655. what you say

  656. about me

  657. and I don't care

  658. and then he shocks

  659. because you see

  660. that's exactly

  661. what the modern world

  662. says as well.

  663. So a person

  664. might be getting

  665. counsel

  666. to struggle,

  667. they're struggling

  668. so much with feeling

  669. that they have no value

  670. because they're worried

  671. about what everybody

  672. else is saying

  673. about them

  674. and they're asking

  675. why is this,

  676. why don't I have

  677. a relationship

  678. that I want,

  679. why don't I have

  680. the job success

  681. and career that I want,

  682. why don't I have

  683. this or that,

  684. right,

  685. everybody's asking

  686. questions like that,

  687. we all are

  688. and Paul comes

  689. and says

  690. what modern

  691. counselors will say,

  692. you don't need

  693. to care about

  694. other people's opinions

  695. but then the modern

  696. counselor often

  697. will turn and say

  698. all you need

  699. to care about

  700. is what?

  701. your own opinion

  702. of yourself,

  703. you need to look

  704. inside and you need

  705. to think,

  706. look,

  707. I'm happy with who

  708. I am,

  709. I've got the resources

  710. within me

  711. to find contentment

  712. and that's the shock

  713. of this passage

  714. for a modern reader

  715. is Paul comes

  716. and says,

  717. I don't even care

  718. what I think

  719. about me

  720. so I do not

  721. trust my opinion

  722. of myself,

  723. right,

  724. and it's real key

  725. to contentment

  726. and joy in your life

  727. to not trust your opinion

  728. about yourself

  729. and he's saying

  730. I don't trust my opinion,

  731. I don't trust your opinion

  732. Corinthian church

  733. and I don't trust

  734. the opinion I have

  735. about me

  736. and he uses the language

  737. of judge,

  738. why?

  739. Because he's taking it

  740. into the courtroom

  741. and he's saying

  742. you have stuck me

  743. in the dock

  744. and you've put yourself

  745. on the bench

  746. and said Paul

  747. was not as good

  748. of a speaker

  749. as Apollos

  750. and Paul,

  751. you know,

  752. therefore Paul

  753. just didn't really

  754. leave the legacy

  755. around here

  756. that people came

  757. after him too

  758. and he's saying

  759. I won't sit

  760. underneath that judgment

  761. I won't let my heart

  762. sit underneath that

  763. and I won't let my heart

  764. sit underneath

  765. my own judgments

  766. about myself

  767. and then he gives

  768. a solution

  769. so for the person

  770. that you're walking

  771. alongside

  772. and for all of us

  773. tonight

  774. we need to hear

  775. probably to some degree

  776. every single day

  777. the pronouncement

  778. all that matters

  779. is what God

  780. says about me

  781. he's the only judge

  782. that really matters

  783. he's the only one

  784. that has the right

  785. to look at me

  786. from the bench

  787. and put me in the dock

  788. and if you read

  789. the rest of this passage

  790. what you realize

  791. is what

  792. Paul goes on

  793. to talk about

  794. what God does say

  795. in an implicit way

  796. so what God says

  797. about you

  798. is that

  799. when you look at Christ

  800. you can say

  801. he regards me

  802. as a prince

  803. and a princess

  804. he regards me

  805. as a son

  806. and a daughter

  807. he regards me

  808. as the one

  809. that no matter

  810. what I do

  811. no matter what

  812. he will still

  813. get down on his knee

  814. accept my teary

  815. head into his shoulder

  816. and give me a hug

  817. and bring me home again

  818. he's a tender father

  819. that's what he's saying

  820. okay so what does

  821. a person need

  822. who's either struggling

  823. with deep self-loathing

  824. deep self-loathing

  825. or big arrogant pride

  826. they both need

  827. the same thing

  828. they need to be told

  829. see both

  830. both are pride issues

  831. because both people

  832. are thinking

  833. all I care about

  834. is what everybody

  835. else thinks about me

  836. or all I care about

  837. is what I think about me

  838. and how I feel

  839. both are pride issues

  840. and they can either

  841. lead to total self-hatred

  842. or total self-love

  843. big self-love

  844. right

  845. and competition

  846. it's all competition

  847. and both persons

  848. need to hear the same thing

  849. they need to hear

  850. all that matters

  851. is what the Lord

  852. says about you

  853. and when you hear that

  854. it will really humble

  855. the prideful person

  856. because if they're being honest

  857. what the Lord says about you

  858. is you're a big sinner

  859. in need of a big savior

  860. and you're not great

  861. apart from the redemptive

  862. work of Jesus Christ

  863. and for the self-loathing person

  864. they need to hear

  865. do you know what the Lord

  866. says about you

  867. do you know how much

  868. the Lord loves you

  869. do you know how much

  870. he's promised

  871. he will never let you go

  872. you know that he regards you

  873. as a prince and princess

  874. in his kingdom

  875. that he wants to give you

  876. the inheritance

  877. that he's giving

  878. Jesus Christ himself

  879. right

  880. alright so what

  881. what do you do with that

  882. as a counselor

  883. then you take that

  884. and you try to massage

  885. that into their hearts

  886. not because you're trying

  887. to be manipulative

  888. but because it's true

  889. and number six here

  890. is prescribe

  891. some spiritual exercises

  892. now what do I mean by this

  893. okay just like

  894. you've got to work out

  895. you know if you want to

  896. get stronger

  897. you've got to have

  898. resistance in your life

  899. you've got to exercise

  900. something like that

  901. in the same way

  902. our souls

  903. much more importantly

  904. have to have exercise

  905. physical training

  906. Paul says is of some value

  907. but he's trying to point

  908. to the more important thing

  909. and that's spiritual training

  910. so there does have to be

  911. spiritual training

  912. in our lives

  913. so one of the pieces

  914. that may be missing

  915. in point one

  916. and then here

  917. in our lives

  918. in my life

  919. in your life

  920. right now

  921. is I'm not taking

  922. seriously enough

  923. the discipline

  924. of spiritual exercise

  925. and they need

  926. spiritual exercise too

  927. so what does that look like

  928. it can look like

  929. a number of different things

  930. we could talk about

  931. the normal means of grace

  932. so one of the questions

  933. I want to ask a person

  934. who's really struggling

  935. with their heart

  936. with too much pride

  937. or too low of a view

  938. of the self

  939. is I want to say

  940. are you going to church

  941. do you just

  942. you know

  943. you might struggle

  944. and not want to

  945. but you need to be there

  946. you need to get out of bed

  947. you need to go to church

  948. especially the person

  949. that's self-loathing

  950. I want to just

  951. connect them

  952. and ask

  953. are you in the normal

  954. means of corporate grace

  955. the corporate means of grace

  956. that God's given us

  957. but then I want to turn

  958. and talk about their private lives

  959. and help them

  960. and say

  961. and say it through the lens of

  962. this is what has helped me

  963. this is what

  964. this is how I've thought about this

  965. this is what has really been

  966. helpful to my life

  967. and my heart

  968. and the most important thing

  969. I think

  970. I can say

  971. quickly

  972. is this

  973. they really need

  974. to learn

  975. or be helped

  976. with the idea

  977. of Christian meditation

  978. so what is Christian meditation

  979. Christian meditation

  980. is not vacating

  981. the mind

  982. of content

  983. like in Buddhist meditation

  984. or something like that

  985. not at all

  986. Christian meditation

  987. we see all across the Psalms

  988. and that's the daily

  989. consistent pattern

  990. of talking to yourself

  991. about what God says

  992. so David does this

  993. all the time

  994. in the Psalms

  995. he says

  996. bless the Lord

  997. oh my soul

  998. right

  999. who's he talking to

  1000. in that Psalm

  1001. he's talking to himself

  1002. he's saying

  1003. David

  1004. you bless the Lord

  1005. oh my soul

  1006. soul

  1007. you've got to

1008. you've got to get yourself

  1009. in gear

1010. and start blessing the Lord

  1011. praising God

  1012. right

1013. he's actually talking to himself

1014. and then he's letting that

  1015. roll into prayer

1016. so one of the things

  1017. I would really

  1018. say to a person

  1019. that's struggling

  1020. with big pride

  1021. or self-loathing

1022. and we've gotten to have

  1023. an honest conversation

  1024. about that

  1025. and I've said

  1026. you know

  1027. 1 Corinthians 4

  1028. all that matters

  1029. is what God says

  1030. I would say

  1031. why don't you

  1032. every single day

1033. for the next seven days

  1034. every morning

  1035. read that passage

  1036. 1 Corinthians 4

  1037. 1 to 4

1038. and then just sit there

  1039. in ten minutes

  1040. with your eyes closed

1041. and let it soak over you

  1042. this morning

1043. as I go to work

1044. as I go to perform

  1045. at my job

1046. as I go to perform

  1047. in public spaces

  1048. all that matters

  1049. is what the Lord

  1050. says about me

  1051. all that matters

  1052. is what the Lord

  1053. says about me

  1054. look to Christ

  1055. let that soak in

  1056. over and over

  1057. and then

1058. after five or so minutes

  1059. of just reflection

  1060. on that

1061. let it roll into prayer

  1062. Lord work this

  1063. into my soul

  1064. change me

  1065. change me

  1066. plead with the Lord

  1067. and then

  1068. that would be one

  1069. there's other

  1070. spiritual practices

  1071. and exercises

  1072. that they could have

  1073. and they may need

1074. but for the lack of time

  1075. I'll move on

  1076. and then from there

  1077. what you do

1078. as a dear Christian friend

  1079. a good Christian friend

1080. is you make a plan

  1081. to meet again

  1082. and to address

  1083. this issue

  1084. in a week

  1085. and let's say

  1086. let's meet back up

1087. I want to ask you

  1088. how that went

1089. I want to ask you

  1090. if you feel like

  1091. there's been change

1092. I want to ask you

  1093. what the condition

  1094. of your soul

1095. is seven days from now

  1096. in regard to this

  1097. you could also ask

  1098. questions like

  1099. what other passages

  1100. could we look at

  1101. together next time

1102. say do that for seven days

  1103. and then next time

  1104. why don't we look

  1105. together

  1106. at this specific psalm

  1107. just read it together

  1108. and pray it together

  1109. next time

  1110. you could ask

  1111. from there

  1112. what book

  1113. could we read

1114. what book of the bible

  1115. what book

  1116. so in this instance

  1117. I would highly recommend

  1118. short books are wonderful

  1119. for helping people

  1120. I would say

1121. I would love to read

  1122. Tim Keller's

  1123. The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness

  1124. with you

  1125. can we do

  1126. I'll buy it

1127. I'll bring it to you next time

1128. do this for seven days

1129. let me bring this book

  1130. to you next time

1131. and let's walk through it together

  1132. and then lastly

  1133. we said this

  1134. a few weeks back

  1135. but make sure that

  1136. you never leave

  1137. a meeting like this

  1138. a meeting

  1139. walking with somebody

  1140. without praying

  1141. so pray for them

  1142. encourage them

1143. and then I've just listed

1144. finally at the very end

  1145. use calls

  1146. and text messages

  1147. so the

  1148. the unfortunate thing

  1149. about the modern world

  1150. we live in

1151. is that we can all

1152. be reached all the time

  1153. yeah

  1154. and

  1155. the beautiful thing

  1156. is that

  1157. it's so quick

  1158. and easy

  1159. to reach somebody

  1160. and so it's

  1161. it's a tough call

  1162. on that

  1163. but

  1164. use

  1165. text messages

  1166. for ministry

  1167. use calls

  1168. for ministry

  1169. it's

  1170. you don't

1171. you don't have to be

  1172. getting together

  1173. as often

  1174. maybe

  1175. if you're just

  1176. checking in

  1177. and saying

  1178. hey

  1179. I just prayed

  1180. for you

  1181. did you read

  1182. 1 Corinthians 4

  1183. this morning

  1184. 1 to 4

  1185. and meditate on it

  1186. I thought about it

  1187. I read it

  1188. I thought about it

  1189. I'm praying it

  1190. for you today

  1191. get back in

1192. if you haven't done it

  1193. get back in

  1194. right

  1195. so this is

  1196. this is using

  1197. the tools we have

  1198. in modern technology

  1199. to really work truth

  1200. into somebody's life

  1201. okay

  1202. let me give you

  1203. a challenge

  1204. as we close

  1205. the challenge

  1206. is just

1207. I'm saying this to me

1208. I'm saying this to all of us

1209. when we're talking about this

1210. and doing a series like this

  1211. we go back to

  1212. Ephesians 4

  1213. and we learn

1214. all of us are called

1215. all of us are called

  1216. to the ministry

  1217. of exhortation

  1218. and that's all

  1219. we've been describing

  1220. is the ministry

  1221. of exhortation

  1222. parakalea

  1223. coming alongside

  1224. so wherever you are

  1225. right now

  1226. the challenge is

  1227. we should all

1228. in the light of that

  1229. be receiving

  1230. Paul's call

  1231. God's call

  1232. in our lives

  1233. right now

1234. to take a next step

  1235. in that ministry

1236. so maybe the next step

  1237. towards a more meaningful

  1238. ministry

  1239. of parakalea

  1240. coming alongside somebody

  1241. is just to say

  1242. you know what

  1243. tonight I realize

  1244. I've got to get

  1245. my devotional life

  1246. under grips

  1247. not because that

  1248. saves me

  1249. no it does not

  1250. but because

  1251. I need the Lord

  1252. the Spirit

  1253. to be dealing

  1254. with my heart

1255. in order that I can

  1256. help other people

  1257. deal with their hearts

  1258. so tonight

1259. it may just simply be

  1260. that the next step

  1261. of being a counselor

  1262. is to actually

  1263. let the Holy Spirit

  1264. be counseling you

  1265. in morning devotion

  1266. that might be

1267. all that you take away

  1268. and so

  1269. the issue here

  1270. is not

  1271. who in the room

  1272. has 100% devotional

  1273. life every single

  1274. day perfectly

  1275. nobody does

  1276. right

  1277. nobody

  1278. are you just

  1279. simply taking

  1280. limping steps

  1281. forward

  1282. that's all we're

  1283. talking about

  1284. in growth

  1285. in this area

  1286. and then

  1287. if you feel like

1288. you are in a place

  1289. right now

  1290. where God is

  1291. working in your life

  1292. he's dealing

  1293. with your emotions

  1294. he's helping you

  1295. see idols

  1296. fighting negative

  1297. emotions that are

  1298. coming up

  1299. and it's a struggle

  1300. but at least

  1301. you're in the struggle

  1302. you're in the fight

  1303. then the next step

  1304. could be

  1305. who has God

  1306. very naturally

  1307. put in my life

  1308. right now

  1309. ideally in St. Columbus

  1310. but maybe externally

  1311. that's great too

  1312. to say

  1313. could we have

  1314. a more meaningful

  1315. regular meet up

  1316. together

  1317. once a month

  1318. twice a month

  1319. and answer

  1320. a few questions

  1321. how have you

  1322. been

  1323. in your

  1324. spiritual life

  1325. your soul

  1326. have you been

  1327. meeting with God

  1328. in the early mornings

  1329. whatever the question

  1330. lists need to be

  1331. depending on your

  1332. circumstances

  1333. taking a step

  1334. of saying

  1335. could we meet

  1336. regularly

  1337. and talk about this

  1338. we all need that

1339. so it goes both ways

  1340. when we do things

1341. when we take that step

  1342. alright

  1343. let's pray

  1344. Father

  1345. we ask

1346. that you would help us

  1347. by the spirit

  1348. to desire

  1349. more and more

  1350. of you

  1351. that we would want

1352. more and more of you

  1353. in our lives

  1354. that we would want

  1355. to be with you

  1356. Lord

  1357. so maybe

  1358. Father

  1359. that's the prayer

  1360. we ask tonight

1361. that you would help us

  1362. to want

  1363. to be with you

  1364. and therefore

  1365. to become more

  1366. like you

  1367. and then to

  1368. externalize that

  1369. to help other people

  1370. be with you

  1371. and become more

  1372. like you

  1373. and so that's really

  1374. our request tonight

1375. so I pray that you

  1376. would work in our

  1377. hearts with the

  1378. problem

  1379. of esteem

  1380. and ego

  1381. whether it's

  1382. very high

  1383. in our lives

  1384. right now

  1385. very low

  1386. bring it

  1387. to whatever

  1388. it looks like

  1389. to be Christ-like

  1390. we ask

  1391. we pray this

  1392. in Jesus name

  1393. Amen

  1394. Amen

  1395. Amen
