  1. And let's read God's Word together from Matthew 6, verses 1-4.

    Matthew 6:1–4

  2. In the New Testament, the first Gospel, Matthew 6, verses 1-4.

    Matthew 6:1–4

  3. This is the Word of the Lord.

  4. Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.

  5. For then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

  6. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others.

  7. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

  8. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.

  9. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

  10. This is God's Holy Word.

  11. Well, I want to say a huge thank you to Corey for the opportunity to be with you tonight.

  12. And thank you all so much for your warm welcome this evening.

  13. It is always just a massive joy to be with you here in Sincise.

  14. And it's a joy for two reasons.

  15. One, because, as Corey said, so many of you are such dear friends to me and my family.

  16. And I love the opportunity to come and see people who we love so much.

  17. But it's also a joy because we live in a very small community in an area where our churches are small and struggling.

  18. And I love coming to the very middle of our capital city and seeing a full church with many new faces, with Jesus' name being praised and honoured right at the heart of Edinburgh.

  19. So it's a joy for me to be here.

  20. And thank you so, so much for the opportunity and for the warm, warm welcome.

  21. We're going to look together at the words that Corey read from Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  22. And you've been going through the Sermon on the Mount, which is such a wonderful passage of Scripture.

  23. And it's a section of the Bible that's so important for us as disciples.

  24. Because here, Jesus is teaching what God's kingdom, what life in God's kingdom should look like.

  25. And I think you've just gone through chapter 5.

  26. It's teaching you so much about what our character should be like as Christians.

  27. It's guiding us about how we are to bear witness and be a light to the world that's around us.

  28. It's teaching us about how we should understand God's law, how the Old Testament fits into the new, how we should see our response to that in our lives.

  29. And it teaches us about how we should react to situations, especially when other people teach us badly.

  30. And as I'm sure you've heard this many times, it is vital to remember that in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is not teaching you how to become a disciple.

  31. He is teaching you how to live as a disciple.

  32. In other words, this sermon is unpacking what being a disciple of Jesus should look like.

  33. And these opening verses of chapter 6 are teaching us some more crucial lessons.

  34. And I want to think about them under the heading Discipleship Unmasked, which I hope will make sense as we go through.

  35. The great theme of this sermon is that disciples are to be different.

  36. Disciples of Jesus are to be different.

  37. And so at work, at school, in our communities, we are to stand out from the brokenness and the selfishness and the hostility and the cruelty that we see in the world around us.

  38. As we follow Jesus, we are to be different in a beautiful way.

  39. But being different can be hard.

  40. And one of the reasons why being different is so hard is because if you're anything like me, you are constantly plagued with pressure and anxiety about what other people think of you.

  41. I want to share a story with you.

  42. I may have told this story before, so some of you might have heard it before.

  43. Back in Carloway, where I live, the house where we live in is close to the football pitch.

  44. And there's a local football team that we love to go and watch.

  45. So a few years ago, I went to watch the football team.

  46. And I took a football with us because Tom was wee then and the other, John and Annie were also small.

  47. So we took a football so they could play at the side while we watched the game.

  48. That was all fine.

  49. They went home early.

  50. And so I stayed on to watch the rest of the football match.

  51. And I still had the football.

  52. So I was taking the football home as I walked home like a quarter of a mile down the road.

  53. And I was walking home carrying the football.

  54. I thought, well, actually, I'll just maybe just kind of dribble the ball along.

  55. I was kind of once played football a little bit.

  56. And so I walked along and I had the ball on the pavement, just going along like this with the ball.

  57. And at some point, I don't actually know what happened.

  58. But I put my foot on top of the ball and in a second, I was on the ground.

  59. I'm so convinced somebody shot me with something from somewhere.

  60. But anyway, I fell flat on the ground.

  61. I hurt my shoulder.

  62. My shoulder has never been right since.

  63. This is about eight years ago.

  64. And so I fell on the ground.

  65. And so like that, I was in pain.

  66. Confused as to what had happened.

  67. But I immediately stood up, not thinking anything about my pain or about what had happened.

  68. The only thought in my mind was, did anybody see me?

  69. Thankfully, I don't think they did because not many people live in Carlyway.

  70. But that was the immediate thought that came to my mind.

  71. And we're often plagued by that.

  72. You know, what do other people think?

  73. To give you another example, imagine you were wearing your pajamas right now.

  74. Would you feel comfortable?

  75. There's nothing uncomfortable about pajamas.

  76. They're actually very comfortable.

  77. So you could be sitting here.

  78. It would all be super comfortable.

  79. Would you feel comfortable in your pajamas?

  80. Well, I would not feel comfortable in my pajamas entirely because of what other people would be thinking.

  81. In so many ways, this plagues us.

  82. We worry about what people see and think.

  83. It applies in every area of life, in work, in school, in our community, in social media.

  84. And as Jesus highlights in these verses, that can have a huge influence on us as disciples.

  85. And Jesus wants us to think about this.

  86. And so we're going to look at these verses together.

  87. And we're just going to go through three headings.

  88. We're going to think about contrasts, constants, and a question.

  89. And I'm delighted because all my headings begin with C.

  90. So, first of all, contrasts.

  91. Question I'd like to ask you.

  92. What's the opposite of a disciple?

  93. And you might immediately think, well, an unbeliever.

  94. And in so many ways, that is true.

  95. And in many ways, that's the key and ultimate and only distinction that will matter on the day of judgment.

  96. Whether you're united to Jesus by faith or not.

  97. Whether you are with him or against him.

  98. Whether you're on the path to eternal life or to eternal death.

  99. And so, at one level, you're absolutely right if you thought opposite of a disciple is an unbeliever.

  100. But for us as Christians, and so for those of you who are Christians or if you become a Christian,

  101. if you start following Jesus,

  102. in terms of how we live as disciples,

  103. the focus is a little bit more narrow.

  104. In this passage.

  105. And I want to suggest that according to these verses,

  106. the opposite of being a disciple is being a hypocrite.

  107. And that's the key contrast that Jesus is drawing before us in these verses.

  108. And so, in verse 1, he's got that great warning.

  109. Beware of practicing your righteousness in front of other people in order to be seen by them.

  110. And then he goes on to give three examples in this little section and the first following.

  111. He talks about giving.

  112. He talks about prayer.

  113. He talks about fasting.

  114. And in each of them, if you were to look down beyond verse 4,

  115. you'll see that Jesus says the same thing.

  116. Don't be like the hypocrites.

  117. Now, you'll maybe know that the word for hypocrite in Greek, it is the word hypocrite.

  118. It's a Greek word.

  119. And it's the word for an actor.

  120. And that's starting to help us to see and understand what we mean by this term.

  121. Because an actor is somebody who's pretending to be somebody else.

  122. And in the Greco-Roman world, stage acting actually very often involved putting on a stage mask.

  123. And you can Google Greco-Roman stage masks and you'll see them for yourself.

  124. And that's just a very vivid image of what hypocrisy is.

  125. You're kind of putting on an outward appearance, an outward mask that's hiding who you really are.

  126. And it's giving the impression that you're something else.

  127. And so in terms of our relationship with God, and in terms of our life as disciples,

  128. to be a hypocrite is to put on a mask of righteousness or anything else

  129. that is trying to give a good outward impression that will impress people.

  130. And Jesus describes here, sounding a trumpet whilst you give money to those who are in need.

  131. In the next verses he'll talk about standing in the synagogue or on a street corner,

  132. making a really eloquent prayer in front of everyone.

  133. And then he talks about disfiguring your face while you're fasting

  134. so that everyone can see that that's what you're doing.

  135. All of these are just drawing attention to yourself so that other people will be impressed.

  136. And Jesus makes it absolutely clear that is not the kind of discipleship that he's looking for.

  137. And for the hearers of the Sermon on the Mount, this would have been astonishing for them.

  138. Because the people that Jesus is being critical of were the people who everybody would have thought

  139. they are the most religiously devoted people.

  140. They are the experts in what it means to be spiritual.

  141. And they are at the level that the rest of us is trying desperately to match.

  142. And Jesus says, they're hypocrites.

  143. Don't be like them.

  144. That kind of outward show is not what Jesus wants us to live out in our discipleship.

  145. And I think there are many people here who can probably think of examples of this.

  146. You've maybe seen it.

  147. And people who have grown up in the church, I'm sure, will have seen it.

  148. Where you'll have seen somebody in one context, and then you'll have seen them in another context.

  149. And you're thinking, these don't match up.

  150. And it's something that people can find very off-putting and very disappointing when they see it in others in the church.

  151. But that's true.

  152. We will have seen it in others.

  153. But I've got to acknowledge that it's a trap that I've fallen into as well.

  154. It's an incredibly easy trap to slip into because we're worried about what other people think.

  155. All of this is coming back to some of the stuff that chapter 5 highlights.

  156. That as disciples, Jesus wants us to be men and women of integrity.

  157. That idea that our whole lives are integrated together, all of which are under the lordship of Christ.

  158. All of it is shaped by the gospel so that what we are in private, what we are in public,

  159. what we are to one person, we are to everybody.

  160. Jesus wants our discipleship, in other words, to be unmasked.

  161. And Jesus brings that out very clearly by drawing another contrast between the secret place and the public place.

  162. He does it in these verses.

  163. He does it in the verses that follow.

  164. Jesus is saying that these acts of righteousness, whether it's giving here, praying, fasting,

  165. they're actually things that should be done in secret.

  166. Here he's saying, look, don't broadcast what you're giving.

  167. Instead, just keep it secret.

  168. Now in these words, Jesus is touching on two things that we care about a lot.

  169. He's touching on our money and our reputation.

  170. And these are massively influential on us, both in the public place, among colleagues, friends,

  171. and also in the secret place of our hearts.

  172. I am quite sure that this week we won't even be able to help it.

  173. We will think and worry about our money and our reputation.

  174. In fact, these two things are very closely connected.

  175. Today, our reputation is massively influenced by how much money we have and by what we do with it.

  176. So it's money that's going to give you the clothes or the phone or the car or the address or the watch

  177. that will make people think, wow, wow, they've made it.

  178. They've done well.

  179. And our culture cannot break that connection between money and reputation.

  180. So if you're minted, then you're admired.

  181. Now, often in instances, you get some very, very cultured movie references.

  182. Now this was two years ago.

  183. It continues today.

  184. So you get great references to things like Lord of the Rings and all these kind of epic films.

  185. So my film taste operates at a different level to that.

  186. So this, what I'm describing here, is illustrated magnificently in that outstanding epic movie,

  187. Dumb and Dumber.

  188. And that's my level of movie.

  189. Forget Tolkien.

  190. Dumb and Dumber.

  191. Awesome.

  192. Remember Dumb and Dumber?

  193. Two guys not that smart, hilarious,

  194. but they are taking this briefcase back to this girl that the guy likes.

  195. And they have no idea until the briefcase gets opened by mistake that it's full of money.

  196. And so these guys who are kind of mocked and ridiculed,

  197. and everybody thinks they're just idiots,

  198. all of a sudden they're loaded.

  199. And everyone thinks they're great.

  200. Because there's always just this massive connection between money and reputation.

  201. It's interesting that in biblical times,

  202. there is a fascinating kind of connection and a fascinating contrast,

  203. because money and reputation are connected in biblical times,

  204. but in a different way.

  205. So today money and reputation are very much connected in terms of how much you have.

  206. In biblical times,

  207. it was more the case that your reputation was shaped by how much you gave.

  208. And so you can think back to the Old Testament,

  209. where a king that was just massively powerful and wealthy,

  210. they would demonstrate that wealth by giving lavishly to those who visited them.

  211. And so people who could give a lot,

  212. you know, were gaining a huge amount of reputation.

  213. There was the whole idea in that kind of culture

  214. of being like a benefactor and a sponsor of things in your community

  215. and things like that.

  216. And here, in this example,

  217. the religious leaders are kind of doing a similar thing,

  218. making a big public spectacle of what they're giving.

  219. But whether it's the kind of flamboyant generosity of biblical times

  220. or the extravagant spending of today,

  221. the dynamic behind all this is actually the same.

  222. It's all driven by the question,

  223. what do other people think of me?

  224. And as disciples,

  225. we want to swap that question for another one.

  226. Instead of asking,

  227. what does everyone else think?

  228. We need to ask,

  229. what does God think?

  230. And as we contrast those two questions,

  231. which one matters more?

  232. And so for all of us here,

  233. especially for those of you who are studying,

  234. especially those who are stepping into the workplace,

  235. and especially those who in a few years are going to be loaded,

  236. just let that question of what does God think?

  237. What does God want me to do?

  238. Let that always be the one that shapes you.

  239. So lots of contrasts for us to think about.

  240. There's also some constants

  241. that we want to draw out of this passage.

  242. Jesus, as we said,

  243. is exposing the hypocrisy

  244. of the religious leaders around him.

  245. He's got no interest in this kind of lifestyle

  246. where we're kind of one thing here,

  247. another thing there.

  248. In certain situations,

  249. we'll act one way.

  250. In others, we'll act differently.

  251. And all just for this outward show

  252. to impress people.

  253. Jesus has just got no interest in that.

  254. And I love the fact

  255. that Jesus has no interest in that.

  256. And I think one of the big reasons

  257. why Jesus has no interest in that

  258. is because that kind of hypocrisy

  259. is in total contrast

  260. to the constantness of God.

  261. And that's the crucial point

  262. I want us to draw out here,

  263. that hypocrisy

  264. and that kind of inconsistency

  265. is the absolute opposite

  266. of all that God is.

  267. If you ask the question,

  268. how do we define God?

  269. You're probably asking

  270. the most profound question

  271. that anyone could ever consider.

  272. Defining God is just like

  273. a mind-blowing topic.

  274. How would you define God?

  275. But the amazing thing is that

  276. even though that's possibly

  277. the most complicated question

  278. that we could ever ask,

  279. the Bible's answer to that question

  280. is incredibly

  281. and beautifully simple.

  282. Because the Bible sums up

  283. the definition of God

  284. with two of the smallest words

  285. in the English language.

  286. The Bible defines God

  287. with the phrase,

  288. I am.

  289. And that is actually

  290. the foundation of all our theology,

  291. all our understanding of God,

  292. that He is who He is.

  293. And that speaks of the fact

  294. that God is there,

  295. that He's eternal,

  296. that He's true,

  297. and that He is absolutely consistent.

  298. So He is unchanging.

  299. At every moment in eternity,

  300. at every moment in history,

  301. at every moment in dealing with humanity,

  302. God is who He is.

  303. He's utterly consistent,

  304. unchanging,

  305. the same yesterday,

  306. today,

  307. and forever.

  308. Never lies,

  309. never deceives,

  310. never says one thing

  311. and does another,

  312. never pretends,

  313. is never inconsistent.

  314. In other words,

  315. God is never,

  316. ever a hypocrite.

  317. Instead,

  318. in God,

  319. there is magnificent,

  320. majestic constancy.

  321. Now,

  322. there are several big theological categories

  323. that lie behind this.

  324. Divine simplicity,

  325. the fact that in God,

  326. there is just thorough,

  327. undismantleable,

  328. unrearrangeable,

  329. eternal simplicity.

  330. He is God,

  331. forever constant.

  332. Divine immutability,

  333. God does not change.

  334. He's utterly stable,

  335. utterly consistent,

  336. utterly reliable.

  337. Divine omniscience,

  338. the fact that God knows all things,

  339. sees all things,

  340. understands all things.

  341. Divine righteousness,

  342. the fact that God conforms

  343. to an impeccable standard,

  344. an impeccable moral standard,

  345. always maintaining

  346. what is right

  347. and true

  348. and good.

  349. All of these massive

  350. theological categories

  351. are pressing home

  352. the magnificent stability

  353. and constancy

  354. of the God

  355. who is

  356. who He is.

  357. No wonder Jesus says,

  358. don't be a hypocrite.

  359. Because to be that

  360. is to be the opposite

  361. of what God

  362. is like.

  363. And a key part

  364. of all of this

  365. is that

  366. our growth

  367. in discipleship

  368. is the desire

  369. to become

  370. more like Jesus,

  371. to bear the image

  372. of our Creator

  373. more and more.

  374. And as part of that,

  375. we want there to be

  376. a constant correspondence

  377. between our inward lives

  378. and our outward lives.

  379. That's what chapter 5

  380. has been speaking about.

  381. That's what's been highlighted

  382. and emphasized

  383. again here.

  384. And interestingly,

  385. again,

  386. that applies to God.

  387. when you see God,

  388. there is a beautiful

  389. correspondence

  390. between the inward

  391. and in some ways

  392. secret life of God

  393. that is bigger

  394. and more mind-blowing

  395. than we can take in.

  396. There is a

  397. perfect correspondence

  398. and integration

  399. between the inward life

  400. and being of God

  401. and His outward acts.

  402. Now,

  403. this is why

  404. it's so important

  405. that our theology,

  406. these big categories

  407. of theology,

  408. need to become

  409. the lens

  410. through which we look

  411. at our lives

  412. and we look at the lives

  413. of everything

  414. around us

  415. as disciples.

  416. So,

  417. the constant

  418. unchanging truth

  419. about God

  420. needs to be

  421. the constant lens

  422. through which we,

  423. as followers of Jesus,

  424. look at everything

  425. in our lives.

  426. because if our theology

  427. is buried in the back

  428. of our minds,

  429. then we could easily

  430. fall into the trap

  431. of thinking,

  432. well,

  433. I can kind of be

  434. one thing at church

  435. and I can be

  436. another thing at work

  437. and I can be

  438. another thing at home

  439. and I don't really

  440. need to think too much

  441. about how the Sermon

  442. on the Mount

  443. and the other ethical

  444. instructions of the New Testament

  445. affect me

  446. because,

  447. well,

  448. you've just got to kind of,

  449. you know,

  450. got to do what's best

  451. for me

  452. and I've got to do

  453. what works.

  454. And so,

  455. when theology is in the back

  456. of your mind,

  457. you can fall into these traps.

  458. When your theology

  459. becomes the lens

  460. through which you look at life,

  461. the minute that you pull

  462. these great theological truths

  463. about the constantness

  464. of God

  465. into your thinking,

  466. our hypocrisy

  467. becomes exposed

  468. and the gospel does

  469. what it always does.

  470. It blows up our nonsense,

  471. transforms our perspective

  472. and places us

  473. on a much,

  474. much better

  475. intellectual

  476. and ethical foundation.

  477. In other words,

  478. what am I saying?

  479. Well,

  480. it's just basically

  481. the fact that

  482. your theology tells you

  483. that God sees everything

  484. and cares about everything,

  485. whether it is in secret

  486. or in public,

  487. at church,

  488. at work,

  489. at home.

  490. As we said,

  491. God is omniscient.

  492. He sees

  493. and knows everything

  494. and what we do,

  495. whether it's in public

  496. or in secret,

  497. it makes no difference

  498. to God.

  499. He's always watching us.

  500. And it's a great reminder

  501. that in terms of being

  502. disciples of Jesus,

  503. it's reminding us

  504. that actually

  505. who we are

  506. when no one's watching

  507. is who we really are.

  508. And that's why,

  509. you know,

  510. that's why

  511. it's complete theological nonsense

  512. and it's like,

  513. I don't know if it's a good phrase

  514. to use,

  515. it's like evangelistic

  516. self-destruction

  517. when Christians live out

  518. their lives

  519. where we kind of come to church

  520. and we're one thing

  521. and then we go to work

  522. and we're horrible

  523. and difficult

  524. and selfish

  525. and arrogant

  526. and whatever.

  527. It's so,

  528. so damaging

  529. because

  530. that masked

  531. discipleship

  532. that maybe you have

  533. encountered

  534. in your lives,

  535. that masked

  536. discipleship

  537. is theologically absurd

  538. and it's really,

  539. really damaging

  540. because people

  541. can see through it

  542. so easily.

  543. And so,

  544. you know,

  545. it's again like

  546. Jesus,

  547. you know,

  548. he's so wise

  549. because

  550. I've seen so many times

  551. people

  552. who have been put off

  553. because,

  554. they've been put off

  555. the gospel

  556. because they've seen that.

  557. They've been hurt,

  558. treated badly.

  559. They've seen Christians

  560. behave in a way

  561. that they're like,

  562. I can't,

  563. I don't understand that.

  564. And it's so damaging

  565. and then you go to

  566. the New Testament

  567. and Jesus is like,

  568. don't be a hypocrite

  569. because he knows

  570. the damage

  571. it can cause.

  572. There's two warnings

  573. here that arise.

  574. The first is that

  575. we need to be very careful

  576. about financial showing off

  577. and so that's kind of

  578. part of what this is touching

  579. and that's just a,

  580. that's just a wise

  581. and important lesson.

  582. Some of you may,

  583. may well,

  584. already or may go on

  585. to be blessed

  586. to do very,

  587. very well

  588. in your lives,

  589. you know,

  590. and praise God

  591. if you do,

  592. that gives you opportunities

  593. to do wonderful things

  594. for the gospel

  595. but,

  596. you know,

  597. we don't want to,

  598. you don't want to sort of

  599. show that off.

  600. Yeah,

  601. you just don't,

  602. you don't want to do that.

  603. but even more importantly,

  604. what this is really

  605. pressing home to us

  606. is that we have to be on guard

  607. against religious showing off

  608. and that can happen

  609. so easily.

  610. It can happen in church,

  611. it can happen online,

  612. it can happen in books,

  613. it can happen in Bible studies,

  614. it's so easy

  615. in a kind of church setting

  616. to want to say

  617. and do things

  618. that you think

  619. are going to impress

  620. other people.

  621. And there's a massive

  622. social media world

  623. of

  624. Christian,

  625. religious,

  626. desperately trying

  627. to impress people,

  628. ism.

  629. the one person

  630. who is never impressed

  631. is Jesus.

  632. And,

  633. I mean,

  634. I guess I feel a bit

  635. embarrassed saying this

  636. but,

  637. you know,

  638. I'm sitting

  639. this week

  640. writing this sermon

  641. thinking,

  642. I really hope

  643. it's a good sermon

  644. in St. C's.

  645. And then I read,

  646. Beware of practicing

  647. your righteousness

  648. before others

  649. in order to be seen by them.

  650. So we're all

  651. battling this,

  652. we're all battling this

  653. because,

  654. you know,

  655. Jesus gives us

  656. such wise

  657. and helpful warnings

  658. and I want my prayer

  659. and your prayer

  660. to be that our biggest

  661. concern

  662. is always be,

  663. what does God

  664. constantly see?

  665. We spend a lot of time

  666. thinking,

  667. who's watching us?

  668. You're not wrong,

  669. you're not wrong

  670. to think about the fact

  671. that someone

  672. is watching you.

  673. The problem is

  674. that we pick

  675. the wrong someone

  676. to worry about.

  677. So,

  678. this passage

  679. exposes contrasts,

  680. it teaches us

  681. about some constants,

  682. final C,

  683. question.

  684. So,

  685. the Sermon on the Mount

  686. presents us

  687. with a lot of

  688. direct,

  689. challenging,

  690. practical instructions.

  691. That's one of the things

  692. that's beautiful about it,

  693. it's just,

  694. it's quite,

  695. Jesus is quite

  696. hard-hitting in it,

  697. which is actually

  698. helpful.

  699. And because of that,

  700. we can often think

  701. that the Sermon on the Mount

  702. is hitting us

  703. with the question,

  704. will you do this?

  705. So,

  706. will you turn

  707. the other cheek?

  708. Will you guard

  709. your hearts

  710. against lust

  711. and anger?

  712. Will you pray

  713. for those

  714. who persecute you?

  715. Will you go

  716. the extra mile?

  717. And those

  718. will you do this

  719. questions are good,

  720. they are helpful,

  721. they're important,

  722. ask them.

  723. But as we come

  724. into chapter 6,

  725. Jesus is not so much

  726. asking you the

  727. will you do this

  728. question,

  729. in fact,

  730. he just assumes

  731. that you'll do

  732. these things,

  733. because he says,

  734. when you give,

  735. and he'll go on

  736. to say,

  737. when you pray,

  738. and when you fast,

  739. he's not even,

  740. he's just assuming

  741. that we do it,

  742. because these are

  743. core things

  744. that we should

  745. be doing.

  746. So he's not really

  747. asking the

  748. will you do

  749. this question,

  750. he's asking the

  751. why are you

  752. doing this

  753. question.

  754. And so if we

  755. ask the question,

  756. why were these

  757. people putting

  758. on this outward

  759. show of

  760. religious devotion,

  761. why were they

  762. doing that?

  763. And so we might

  764. say,

  765. well,

  766. they were arrogant,

  767. they were show

  768. offs,

  769. they were proud,

  770. they loved their

  771. own status,

  772. they were selfish.

  773. And that's

  774. probably true,

  775. to a greater or

  776. lesser degree.

  777. But I think that

  778. the biggest reason

  779. why they were

  780. doing all these

  781. things is because

  782. they were insecure.

  783. And exactly the

  784. same is true in

  785. all areas of life.

  786. People show off,

  787. people try to put

  788. on a good impression,

  789. people make a huge

  790. effort for their

  791. outward appearance

  792. to look good,

  793. whether that's by

  794. talking about your

  795. salary or your

  796. job or your

  797. grades or making

  798. sure you've got

  799. the right clothes,

  800. car, watch,

  801. whatever,

  802. whether it's your

  803. social media page,

  804. it has to look all

  805. picture perfect,

  806. or whatever it is.

  807. Why do we do

  808. these things?

  809. Is it because we're

  810. confident and strong

  811. and self-assured?

  812. No, I think it is

  813. almost always because

  814. we are insecure

  815. and scared.

  816. And that's where we

  817. discover that you can

  818. actually get two kinds

  819. of hypocrisy.

  820. You can get arrogant

  821. hypocrisy.

  822. So somebody who just,

  823. you know, somebody who

  824. does not care about

  825. integrity, quite happy

  826. with inconsistency in

  827. their lives, and is

  828. only interested in

  829. serving themselves.

  830. And you do get that

  831. from time to time, and

  832. maybe there's occasions

  833. in life when we've

  834. slipped into that trap.

  835. You get that kind of

  836. arrogant hypocrisy

  837. sometimes.

  838. I think far more

  839. common is the second

  840. kind of hypocrisy,

  841. anxious hypocrisy.

  842. And that's the trap

  843. that I fall into,

  844. and that I have to

  845. battle against.

  846. Because when I've been

  847. a hypocrite, it's not

  848. usually because I'm

  849. just a kind of

  850. uncontrollable, arrogant

  851. idiot.

  852. More often than not,

  853. it's because I'm

  854. nervous.

  855. Or scared.

  856. And that's why I'll

  857. do one thing in one

  858. context, and another

  859. thing in another

  860. context.

  861. And that's why I'll

  862. maybe hide.

  863. So when I was an

  864. engineer, you may be

  865. like, oh, you're

  866. reluctant to talk about

  867. the fact that you were

  868. at church, or at

  869. school.

  870. At times I was

  871. reluctant to tell

  872. people and speak about

  873. the fact that I was a

  874. Christian.

  875. Why did I do that?

  876. I didn't do that

  877. because I was arrogant.

  878. I was arrogant in

  879. different ways.

  880. But that wasn't, I

  881. did that because I was

  882. scared.

  883. And so being anxious

  884. can make you a

  885. hypocrite.

  886. And it's a great

  887. reminder that the

  888. mask of hypocrisy is

  889. not actually a public

  890. display.

  891. It's a public

  892. hiding.

  893. thing.

  894. And of course, the

  895. Bible explains why

  896. that's the case.

  897. It's one of the

  898. massive consequences

  899. of the fall.

  900. Sin makes us want to

  901. hide because it makes

  902. us feel ashamed.

  903. You see that in Adam

  904. and Eve?

  905. I see it in my own

  906. heart.

  907. And so many of us

  908. today, as you go into

  909. tomorrow, this new week,

  910. you're in this pressure.

  911. pressure.

  912. Pressure to put on a

  913. public face to make a

  914. good impression.

  915. And the result is that

  916. you can live a double

  917. life.

  918. And so you can have the

  919. double life of, you

  920. know, who we are at

  921. work compared to who we

  922. really are.

  923. The double life of who

  924. we are on social media

  925. compared to who we

  926. really are.

  927. And we can have the

  928. double life of who we

  929. are at church compared

  930. with who we really are.

  931. This weekend, I had the

  932. amazing privilege of being

  933. at the youth conference,

  934. the pre-church youth

  935. conference.

  936. There was 200 people

  937. there on Saturday.

  938. It was amazing.

  939. So good to see.

  940. But I know that for

  941. some of the people who

  942. are at that conference,

  943. they are struggling with

  944. a double life.

  945. Because there's pressure

  946. on them to conform to

  947. what their friends are

  948. doing and everything.

  949. They are being pulled

  950. in two directions.

  951. And we do that because

  952. we're scared.

  953. We put massive pressure

  954. on ourselves to put on

  955. this outward mask in

  956. order to make it look

  957. like we're okay.

  958. The whole thing is

  959. utterly exhausting.

  960. And the last thing I want

  961. to press home to you is

  962. that the whole thing is

  963. utterly unnecessary.

  964. We struggle with hypocrisy

  965. because we struggle with

  966. insecurity.

  967. And the magnificent thing

  968. about the gospel is that

  969. grace addresses both.

  970. So there's been times

  971. when I've been a hypocrite

  972. because I'm almost always

  973. anxious and insecure

  974. and grace deals with both.

  975. So grace deals with your hypocrisy.

  976. So if you can sit here right now

  977. and if I have guilt-tipped you

  978. for the last 34 minutes

  979. where you're thinking,

  980. as a Christian,

  981. I have been living a double life

  982. and I have failed to kind of

  983. be who I really am

  984. in front of my friends

  985. or my colleagues

  986. and I have not lived out

  987. the Sermon on the Mount

  988. and I can see that sin

  989. and I feel so guilty

  990. about that sin

  991. and I am so annoyed

  992. with myself.

  993. Do you know what grace

  994. is saying to you?

  995. Grace is saying

  996. that is forgiven.

  997. Your hypocrisy

  998. is washed away

  999. with all your other sins

1000. by the blood of Jesus.

  1001. Grace deals without hypocrisy

  1002. but grace also deals

  1003. without insecurity.

1004. Because God in the gospel

  1005. wants to pour reassurance

  1006. into your heart

  1007. that you are His.

1008. So we are talking about

  1009. discipleship unmasked.

1010. So I'm sure all of us here

1011. feel like we kind of have

  1012. a little bit of a mask

  1013. on us as disciples.

  1014. And you know,

  1015. we can say that

  1016. because we're like,

  1017. well,

1018. we don't really want anybody

1019. to see what's really in us

1020. and what we're really like.

  1021. So if you imagine

  1022. that you really were

  1023. unmasked

  1024. before us tonight

  1025. as a disciple,

  1026. you're a follower of Jesus

  1027. and you are absolutely

  1028. unmasked,

  1029. what would we see?

1030. And you might be thinking

  1031. you'd be seeing

  1032. the biggest failure

  1033. out there.

  1034. And you'd be seeing

  1035. somebody who doesn't have

  1036. anything like the Bible

  1037. knowledge they should have.

  1038. And who was like,

  1039. actually barely even

1040. made it out of church tonight

  1041. because I was feeling

  1042. too tired.

  1043. And you think,

1044. oh, you'll see all these.

  1045. So you think,

  1046. that's what's getting exposed.

1047. If you are unmasked tonight,

1048. what would you actually see?

1049. What would you actually find?

  1050. You would find

1051. the beloved child of God.

1052. You'd find the bride of Christ.

1053. You'd find the eternally redeemed.

1054. Bought with the blood of Christ.

  1055. You'd find someone

1056. whom God has loved forever.

1057. Do you need a mask?

  1058. Of course you don't.

  1059. And that's why

  1060. as we follow Jesus,

1061. we want to just live out

1062. the life that he has blessed us with.

1063. And for this beautiful gospel

  1064. to shape

  1065. all that we do.

  1066. And the result is

  1067. an amazing reward.

  1068. And I didn't have time

  1069. to talk about this.

1070. And I've already gone on

  1071. for too long.

  1072. And those of you

  1073. who were here

  1074. when I was here

  1075. will have thought,

  1076. well, that's just normal.

  1077. But there is just

1078. this talk of a reward.

  1079. And the beautiful thing

1080. is that in our hypocrisy

  1081. we're looking for

1082. that kind of instant reward

1083. of people approving of us

1084. and being impressed with us.

1085. And it fades so quickly.

  1086. And God is saying,

  1087. and Jesus is saying

  1088. in these words,

  1089. Luke,

  1090. that the gospel

  1091. is giving us

  1092. an eternal reward.

  1093. And that's asking you

  1094. the question,

  1095. can you be content

  1096. with an eternal reward?

  1097. And you know,

  1098. my hypocrisy

  1099. isn't content with that.

  1100. Because I want

  1101. the instant reward.

  1102. But if I

  1103. focus on that

  1104. and on what all

1105. that God has promised us,

1106. my need for a mask

  1107. of hypocrisy disappears.

1108. And as an unmasked disciple,

  1109. I can bask

  1110. in the beauty

  1111. and the fullness

  1112. of everything

  1113. that Jesus

  1114. wants to give me

  1115. and that he wants

  1116. to give you.

1117. So as we go on together,

1118. let's go on as disciples

  1119. unmasked.

  1120. Amen.

  1121. Let's pray.

  1122. Lord Jesus,

  1123. we thank you

  1124. so, so much

  1125. for your amazing wisdom

  1126. in seeing through

  1127. the reality of hypocrisy.

  1128. but as we

1129. also see in these words,

  1130. we thank you

  1131. for the way

  1132. in which the gospel

  1133. deals with our hypocrisy.

  1134. And we're sorry

  1135. for the times

  1136. when we have

  1137. felt the need

1138. to put on a mask

1139. and try to put on

  1140. an impression to others.

  1141. Thank you

  1142. that the gospel

1143. deals with all of that.

1144. And so for everyone here,

  1145. may they know

  1146. anew

  1147. just the cleansing,

  1148. healing,

  1149. renewing,

  1150. wonderful power

  1151. of the gospel

  1152. in their lives

  1153. and may their hearts

  1154. be filled

  1155. with the security

  1156. and the peace

  1157. and the hope

  1158. of knowing

  1159. that we have

  1160. been loved by you

  1161. and will be loved

  1162. by you forever.

  1163. We pray that everybody

  1164. here would see

  1165. and understand that

  1166. more and more.

  1167. Amen.
