  1. Tonight we're thinking about loving our enemies, loving like the Father.

  2. So we'll read from Matthew 5 and from verse 43.

  3. This is God's Word.

  4. Ryan.

  5. Well, you may have noticed that we actually are jumping backwards from where we were last week.

  6. There was a little miscommunication with the worship night.

  7. And so we had Thomas Davis preaching chapter 6 verses 1 through 4.

  8. And so we've jumped back to chapter 5.

  9. We will jump forward again next Sunday night.

  10. But we are in the Sermon on the Mount.

  11. And we're in those passages where Jesus, there's six of them, where Jesus has said,

  12. You have heard that it was said, but I say to you.

  13. And tonight we're again in one of the most familiar of all of the teachings of Jesus

  14. when we're talking about loving your enemy.

  15. Now, one of the things that if you know me very well, you probably know,

  16. I have a big problem where I Google way too many things.

  17. Something will come up and Kelly will just say,

  18. Ryan, you don't have to Google that.

  19. Okay.

  20. Well, there has been a little bit of a cure to that problem as Christian.

  21. And then Spencer introduced me to chat GPT.

  22. So now it gets all of my questions.

  23. And as I was trying to play with Microsoft's AI version called Copilot,

  24. I just put in the question, what makes Jesus unique?

  25. I just wanted to see what it would say.

  26. What makes Jesus unique?

  27. And this is what Copilot said.

  28. While many philosophers emphasized ethical living, self-improvement, or societal structures,

  29. Jesus introduced an unwavering focus on selfless love,

  30. not only for friends or the deserving, but even for enemies,

  31. an idea profoundly countercultural at the time.

  32. So even AI, when you just put in something like what makes Jesus unique,

  33. talks about our passage here tonight, which is about loving our enemies.

  34. It is so foundational to the Christian life.

  35. And in fact, it's probably so familiar to us if you've grown up in church,

  36. that there's a little bit of a temptation to kind of just stop focusing and saying,

  37. yeah, I've been there, done that.

  38. What am I going to hear tonight that I've not heard before?

  39. And the answer to that is probably nothing, but that is not the Christian life.

  40. The Christian life is not just learning new things,

  41. but many times learning how to apply in a fresh way what the Word of God says to us.

  42. In fact, as I was preparing for this for a couple of weeks,

  43. I was kind of diving into some of the minutiae

  44. and some of the different things that the commentaries were saying,

  45. and it just hit me like I'm getting lost in all of these details

  46. when just such the basic teaching of Christianity is you must love even your enemies.

  47. And so that's where we are tonight.

  48. We're trying to ask this question,

  49. how can we love our enemies?

  50. There's something so simple about it, yet so profound in this passage,

  51. and we must not gloss over it.

  52. So we'll start in chapter 5, verse 43,

  53. where Jesus says,

  54. you've heard that it was said,

  55. you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  56. Now, the Old Testament law did tell us to love our neighbor.

  57. And the question that came to my mind was,

  58. did the scribes and Pharisees really teach,

  59. love your neighbor, but hate your enemies?

  60. Well, apparently so.

  61. But if you think about it,

  62. there are passages in the Old Testament

  63. where you can kind of see where they get it from.

  64. For instance, Psalm 97.10 says,

  65. Oh, you who love the Lord, hate evil.

  66. Or if you look at some of the Psalms,

  67. they're calling curses down on the enemies of God's people.

  68. If you're living in oppression like they are at this time,

  69. you can see how it would be easy to say,

  70. well, these people are evil,

  71. therefore we must love our neighbor.

  72. But it's okay to hate these people

  73. because they are evil.

  74. They are my enemies.

  75. These are evil people who are against God and His people.

  76. And so, also, they are not my neighbor.

  77. The Pharisees taught that your neighbor were Israelites.

  78. If you were not an Israelite, you were not my neighbor.

  79. So I didn't have to love you.

  80. And Jesus says, that's not what God teaches us.

  81. Love your neighbor applies not just to Israelites,

  82. but to even your enemies.

  83. We do know that the Qumran community

  84. that gave us the Dead Sea Scrolls,

  85. we know that they did actively teach

  86. that you are to love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  87. So it was a prevalent teaching at that time.

  88. But before we just cast judgment on them,

  89. we can convince ourselves of many things.

  90. If we want it to be true,

  91. we can even convince ourselves of that in Scripture.

  92. I won't give any examples of that,

  93. but you know what I'm talking about.

  94. If we want it to be true,

  95. a lot of times we will even find Scriptures

  96. to try to prove our point.

  97. And that's what the Pharisees and scribes would do.

  98. You have heard it was said,

  99. you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  100. But I say to you,

  101. love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

  102. Jesus said, love your enemies.

  103. And the word their enemy means someone

  104. that is opposed to you,

  105. someone that is hostile toward you.

  106. It's someone that you hate.

  107. Now, some of you may read this or hear this and think,

  108. well, when I think of enemies,

  109. I don't really have any enemies.

  110. And if you have no one,

  111. on one side,

  112. if you have no one that you can see

  113. is like that person or those people oppose me,

  114. you might not be standing on real convictions.

  115. If no one is opposed to you,

  116. you might be a people pleaser

  117. and not living according to convictions.

  118. On the other side,

  119. if you're thinking,

  120. okay, I can think of a lot of enemies,

  121. then you might just be a jerk.

  122. Neither one of those are good, okay?

  123. But we can all think about people in our lives

  124. that would be opposed to us.

  125. Maybe it's not saying,

  126. calling someone an enemy,

  127. but we might say,

  128. I have a really hard time loving this person.

  129. Or those who oppose us that we're like,

  130. I can't even stand to be around them.

  131. Who are the people that push our buttons,

  132. that set us off?

  133. I mean, just to even pull out a little bit further,

  134. think about the political leaders

  135. that you're just eager to talk bad about.

  136. Think about the very least,

  137. those in the media,

  138. when we're seeing like social media or something,

  139. that just makes our blood boil.

  140. Those would be our enemies.

  141. Maybe it hits a little closer to home

  142. and it's someone that has made fun of you

  143. or mistreated you.

  144. Maybe someone that bullied us.

  145. Someone who actively mistreats others.

  146. Maybe not us, but someone we love.

  147. Who are those that we are most likely to avoid?

  148. And this would even apply,

  149. maybe you wouldn't call this person an enemy,

  150. but that person that just annoys us.

  151. Who are those people that come to your mind?

  152. And Jesus says,

  153. love your enemies.

  154. Jesus doesn't just say,

  155. don't retaliate.

  156. He doesn't just tell us to avoid,

  157. don't be mean or anything like that.

  158. He tells us to actively love our enemies.

  159. Now, love is obviously linked to showing kindness

  160. in Luke 6,

  161. in the same kind of passage.

  162. We call Luke 6 the Sermon on the Plains.

  163. It says he came down from a mountain.

  164. Sermon on the Plains,

  165. Sermon on the Mount

  166. has some of the same things.

  167. And in that passage,

  168. he tells us to actively do good to our enemies.

  169. But this,

  170. when he says,

  171. love your neighbor as yourself,

  172. that would apply to this.

  173. We are to love them.

  174. And when Jesus says,

  175. love your neighbor as yourself,

  176. I mean,

  177. we can think about it to the same extent

  178. that I would try to feed myself

  179. when I'm hungry.

  180. that's the extent to which

  181. I should love my enemies

  182. to make sure they have food as well.

  183. To make sure my needs are met,

  184. that's the same extent

  185. to which I should love my enemies

  186. and make sure their needs are met.

  187. This sounds kind of crazy.

  188. Could we really actually live like this?

  189. Paul says that love bears all things,

  190. believes all things,

  191. and hopes all things.

  192. Can I really bear all things

  193. for the sake of love

  194. in regard to my enemy?

  195. Can I really think the best of them

  196. and hope that good things happen to my enemy?

  197. Because that's what love does.

  198. Love your enemies.

  199. Can I really extend this kind of love,

  200. the love that Jesus calls us to,

  201. to my enemies.

  202. And look what he says.

  203. He says,

  204. love your enemies

  205. and pray for those who persecute you.

  206. Pray for them.

  207. Why does he say pray for them?

  208. Dallas Willard,

  209. who wrote a book called Divine Conspiracy,

  210. which addresses the Sermon on the Mount,

  211. he says that prayer

  212. is the highest form of loving someone.

  213. When you pray for someone,

  214. you really are wishing for their good.

  215. You want their good to happen.

  216. So when he says pray for those who persecute you,

  217. that is one of the highest forms

  218. that we can have of loving someone.

  219. Praying is also connected,

  220. when we think about prayer,

  221. we think about provision,

  222. we think about prosperity for thriving.

  223. Do we really pray for the thriving

  224. of those who are actively against us?

  225. This word persecute here,

  226. it literally means active pursuit.

  227. that someone who is chasing after you

  228. in order to overtake and harm you.

  229. Pray for those people.

  230. The people who actively want bad things for you,

  231. we are to pray for them,

  232. to want their good,

  233. and to even ask God to give them good things.

  234. Like the change of heart?

  235. Those who actively seek our harm.

  236. Pray for those that persecute you.

  237. And Jesus says,

  238. do this so that you may be sons

  239. of your Father who is in heaven.

  240. This doesn't mean in order to become

  241. sons of your Father who is in heaven.

  242. It means because you are His sons.

  243. Because you are God's children,

  244. children,

  245. love your enemies,

  246. and pray for those who persecute you.

  247. Demonstrate that you are a child

  248. of your Father in heaven

  249. by loving your enemies

  250. and praying for those who persecute you.

  251. How in the world

  252. could we possibly do this?

  253. This is exactly how the Father treated us.

  254. Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5:8–10

  255. verses 8 through 10,

  256. says that God demonstrated His love for us

  257. and while we were yet sinners,

  258. Christ died for us.

  259. It goes down to verse 10 and says,

  260. for if while we were enemies,

  261. we were reconciled to God

  262. by the death of His Son,

  263. much more now that we are reconciled,

  264. shall we be saved by His life.

  265. We were enemies

  266. when God pursued us.

  267. That same word for enemy

  268. is used in Colossians 1.21

  269. that says we were hostile toward God.

  270. Those who are without Christ

  271. are actively opposed against God

  272. just like we were.

  273. This is how God treated us.

  274. That while we were enemies,

  275. He pursued us.

  276. In order to overtake us

  277. with His grace

  278. and His mercy.

  279. This is one of the clearest truths

  280. of the Gospel.

  281. That is,

  282. it is love for His enemies

  283. that brought Christ to earth

  284. to die on the cross

  285. for your sins.

  286. And if you get nothing else

  287. out of the sermon tonight,

  288. let your heart just be full

  289. of love and worship

  290. for the Father,

  291. that He would pursue you

  292. while you were His active enemy.

  293. And if you just get that,

  294. if you just meditate on that

  295. and get that at the deep down heart level,

  296. all of a sudden,

  297. God's love will then overflow

  298. out of you

  299. even to your enemies.

  300. That's how we love

  301. like the Father.

  302. Father.

  303. As we understand

  304. that this is how He loved us.

  305. That while we were His enemies,

  306. He pursued us.

  307. He loved us.

  308. Now,

  309. this teaching,

  310. as

  311. ChatGPT and Co-Pilot

  312. would tell us,

  313. this teaching

  314. was unique

  315. during the time.

  316. Now,

  317. there were some other teachings

  318. that would basically

  319. say stuff like

  320. maybe avoid

  321. your enemies,

  322. maybe don't

  323. try to do things

  324. to disrupt things

  325. with your enemies,

  326. but nothing to go as far

  327. as to say

  328. love your enemy.

  329. Pray for your enemy.

  330. This was something

  331. that was completely new,

  332. completely unique,

  333. and it has changed

  334. our world.

  335. It has changed our world

  336. and it is even depicted

  337. in our stories now.

  338. You can look up,

  339. I mean,

  340. just do a Google search

  341. if you want to,

  342. shout out to Google still,

  343. but just movies

  344. that portray

  345. loving your enemies,

  346. books that portray

  347. loving your enemies,

  348. and just look at

  349. all the list of things

  350. that show up.

  351. It has changed

  352. the way we tell

  353. our stories.

  354. Now,

  355. all of my kids

  356. have loved

  357. the Marvel movies,

  358. the Avengers.

  359. There's one movie

  360. in the Avengers

  361. that I particularly like

  362. called the Black Panther,

  363. and spoiler alert,

  364. but if you haven't seen it,

  365. it's your fault.

  366. King T'Challa has been

  367. defeated by Killmonger.

  368. He is the Black Panther,

  369. and he has lost the mantle

  370. of the Black Panther.

  371. He's left for dead.

  372. He's nursed back to health,

  373. and he has dreams and plans

  374. of coming back

  375. and taking back the throne,

  376. taking back the mantle

  377. of Black Panther.

  378. and when he fights Killmonger,

  379. he wins,

  380. but instead of destroying him,

  381. he has mercy on him

  382. and even tries to save him

  383. and offer him healing.

  384. He even honors him

  385. by taking him

  386. to the top of the mountain

  387. where he can look over

  388. at the sunset,

  389. setting over Wakanda,

  390. kind of one of his last dreams.

  391. This is a depiction

  392. of loving even your enemy.

  393. They get that from Jesus.

  394. Maybe a little bit closer to home,

  395. Joe Rowling happened to put this

  396. in the Harry Potter series

  397. as the villain,

  398. like, you know,

  399. well, not the main villain,

  400. but one of the guys

  401. that just drives you crazy

  402. from the very beginning

  403. of the book,

  404. Draco Malfoy,

  405. all the way through,

  406. you can't stand the guy,

  407. you really do have this

  408. distaste, dislike.

  409. He's awful, right?

  410. But it's the end of the books.

  411. Again, spoiler alert,

  412. but if you haven't seen it,

  413. it's your fault

  414. or haven't read it.

  415. It's been available

  416. for a long time.

  417. At the end,

  418. they're in the room

  419. of requirement.

  420. You know what I'm talking about?

  421. And Crab calls the fiend fire

  422. or whatever it's called,

  423. and it gets out of control.

  424. They get brooms.

  425. Harry and his friends

  426. get brooms,

  427. and they're flying out.

  428. And they see Draco

  429. hanging there.

  430. They see him in trouble.

  431. And Harry's friends

  432. are like,

  433. see ya.

  434. Harry's like,

  435. no, I gotta go back for him.

  436. And all of a sudden,

  437. we see this valor,

  438. this courageous thing

  439. where he risks his life

  440. for his specific enemy.

  441. And it changed everything.

  442. It changed Harry's heart.

  443. It changed Draco's heart.

  444. And that's one of the things

  445. that we see.

  446. That when we love our enemies,

  447. it changes things.

  448. And at the very least,

  449. it changes our own hearts

  450. when we allow the love of God

  451. to spill out to us,

  452. even to our enemies.

  453. it will certainly change you.

  454. Verse 45 says,

  455. for he makes his sun rise on the evil

  456. and on the good,

  457. and sends rain on the just and the unjust.

  458. Now, don't miss the significance of this.

  459. In an agrarian society,

  460. having sun and rain

  461. is completely,

  462. it's so important for prosperity,

  463. even for life.

  464. Without sun and rain,

  465. there is gonna be complete death.

  466. Famine.

  467. In an agrarian society,

  468. sun and rain

  469. are basic necessities

  470. that they must have

  471. in order to survive.

  472. So if you think about the idolatry

  473. of Israel

  474. that they were tempted with

  475. in the Old Testament,

  476. think about some of the names.

  477. The Baal,

  478. Asherah,

  479. Dagon,

  480. Chemosh.

  481. Baal was the storm god.

  482. Asherah was the goddess of fertility.

  483. Dagon,

  484. grain and agriculture.

  485. Chemosh,

  486. fertility.

  487. So much of it was linked

  488. to just crying out to anything

  489. that they thought would listen

  490. so that they would get sun and rain

  491. for their crops to grow,

  492. for the society to flourish.

  493. God sends His sun and rain

  494. even on the enemies.

  495. He knows that by sending sun and rain

  496. to the pagans,

  497. to those who actively oppose Him,

  498. they are not gonna give Him credit for it,

  499. but give these false idols,

  500. these false gods credit

  501. for sending the storms,

  502. for sending the sun,

  503. and for sending the rain.

  504. If God were petty and spiteful,

  505. He would withhold the sun and the rain

  506. except for those who recognize Him

  507. from exactly where it came from.

  508. But He gives His sun and rain

  509. even to those who don't recognize Him,

  510. to His enemies,

  511. those who actively oppose Him.

  512. Now in modern times,

  513. if you even think about it,

  514. the sun rising and setting

  515. is one of those things

  516. that is foundational for why science works.

  517. Science relies on the assumption

  518. that the universe operates

  519. according to consistent laws

  520. that can be observed,

  521. tested,

  522. and predicted.

  523. God's gift of sun

  524. leads some to trust in science

  525. instead of Him.

  526. But that is the love of our Father,

  527. that He sends His Son and His rain

  528. even on His enemies,

  529. on the evil and on the good.

  530. When we love our enemies,

  531. we are acting like children

  532. of the Father in heaven.

  533. Now, remember in the Sermon on the Mount

  534. and these passages we've been talking about

  535. that Jesus isn't just giving us

  536. some rules to obey.

  537. He's telling us how to become kingdom people

  538. so that love overflows from our hearts

  539. even towards our enemies.

  540. Remember, He's getting to the heart of things.

  541. You've heard that it was said,

  542. you shall not murder,

  543. but I say to you,

  544. don't even be angry with your brother.

  545. Anger, murder,

  546. adultery, lust.

  547. He's getting at the heart.

  548. And with this passage,

  549. He's helping us see

  550. how love can overflow from our hearts

  551. into the way that we live our lives

  552. so that it even spills out

  553. to our enemies.

  554. And then in verse 46,

  555. He says,

  556. For if you love those who love you,

  557. what reward do you have?

  558. Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

  559. For if you love those that love you,

  560. He's starting to list

  561. some of the enemies of these people.

  562. Tax collectors.

  563. They were like the ultimate betrayers of Israel.

  564. One way that we would think about people,

  565. the way that we think about terrorists

  566. and racists and fascists,

  567. awful people in our minds,

  568. like that's the way they would think

  569. of tax collectors.

  570. And He's saying,

  571. even those people love those who love them.

  572. How different are you

  573. if you only love people that love you?

  574. Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

  575. And if you greet only your brothers,

  576. what more are you doing than others?

  577. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  578. Now this idea of greeting someone,

  579. it means to embrace

  580. or to welcome,

  581. to receive them.

  582. It was often done in that culture

  583. with a kiss on the cheek.

  584. But it has this idea

  585. of showing honor and respect.

  586. So we're to greet people.

  587. In other words,

  588. we're to welcome, receive,

  589. show honor to people

  590. who are not just people

  591. that we know and love,

  592. but all people.

  593. And one of the things

  594. that we need to understand

  595. from this passage

  596. is that our treatment of people

  597. must never depend on who they are,

  598. but it depends on who we are.

  599. We're children of our Father

  600. who is in heaven.

  601. And this Father in heaven

  602. loves even His enemies.

  603. This should transform our lives.

  604. And then it says,

  605. you know,

  606. what reward have you?

  607. He brings up the idea of reward.

  608. He'll do it again in chapter 6.

  609. This idea of reward,

  610. to be kingdom people,

  611. to be able to love our enemies,

  612. we have to understand

  613. that life is not just about

  614. the here and now.

  615. There's also a life

  616. that is yet to come

  617. that we are to live for,

  618. living in light of eternity,

  619. knowing that our time here

  620. is a short time

  621. before Jesus comes back

  622. and will make all things new.

  623. We are to live in light of that,

  624. in light of eternity.

  625. There is reward.

  626. And when we think about that life,

  627. when we think about

  628. that this life on earth

  629. is just a blip on the radar,

  630. it allows us to understand

  631. that, okay,

  632. we can live differently

  633. because there is a time

  634. that is to come

  635. where Jesus will make

  636. all things new.

  637. And I want even my enemies

  638. to be there with me.

  639. I want them to know

  640. the love of the Father.

  641. And if that's not our heart,

  642. where we want our enemies

  643. to come to know

  644. the love of the Father,

  645. we need to question

  646. the love that is in us.

  647. Because that's how

  648. He taught us to love.

  649. To want the world to know.

  650. Even our enemies

  651. to know the love of the Father.

  652. Loving your enemy

  653. is foundational

  654. to the Christian life.

  655. It is the most basic

  656. teaching of Jesus.

  657. But it's tough.

  658. It's not easy

  659. to love those

  660. who annoy us.

  661. It's not easy

  662. to love those

  663. who push our buttons.

  664. Who set us off.

  665. And even enjoy doing so.

  666. How do we love those

  667. who bully others

  668. and mistreat others?

  669. How do we love them?

  670. Those people that have

  671. come to our mind

  672. tonight

  673. while we've been

  674. in this passage.

  675. How do we love them?

  676. We must meditate

  677. on the love

  678. of our Father

  679. and what He did for us.

  680. He loved us so much

  681. that He sent Jesus

  682. to die.

  683. He sent Jesus

  684. to fulfill

  685. all righteousness

  686. that we could not do.

  687. To live the life

  688. that we couldn't live.

  689. And then He died

  690. the death

  691. that we deserved

  692. to die.

  693. His enemies.

  694. And in doing so

  695. He brought us

  696. into the family

  697. of God.

  698. So now we have

  699. a Father

  700. who loves His enemies

  701. and He's teaching us

  702. and empowering us

  703. by His Spirit

  704. to do the same.

  705. Love your enemies

  706. and pray for those

  707. who persecute you.

  708. One final word.

  709. This verse 48 here.

  710. In my Bible

  711. it's put with this

  712. same paragraph.

  713. You therefore

  714. must be perfect

  715. as your Heavenly Father

  716. is perfect.

  717. There are many

  718. that will say

  719. that this verse

  720. is actually a summary

  721. of everything

  722. going back to verse 17.

  723. All the passages

  724. that are

  725. you've heard

  726. that it was said

  727. but I say to you

  728. all of those passages

  729. that this verse

  730. you therefore

  731. must be perfect

  732. as your Heavenly Father

  733. is perfect

  734. that it applies

  735. to all of that.

  736. It's a summary

  737. of those kind of things.

  738. In all of those things

  739. Jesus is not just telling us

  740. we have a new law

  741. to obey.

  742. He's not giving us

  743. a new law.

  744. He's helping us

  745. get to the intent

  746. the matters of the heart.

  747. And in verse 20

  748. He even says

  749. that our righteousness

  750. must surpass

  751. that of the scribes

  752. and the Pharisees.

  753. He's basically saying

  754. that the scribes

  755. and the Pharisees

  756. are all about

  757. outward obedience.

  758. I'm telling you

  759. it goes to the heart.

  760. So we get to verse 48.

  761. You therefore

  762. must be perfect

  763. as your Heavenly Father

  764. is perfect.

  765. That word

  766. therefore perfect

  767. that might not be

  768. the best English

  769. translation of it.

  770. There's one commentator

  771. that makes a great case

  772. and he's not alone

  773. in this

  774. but makes a great case

  775. that this word

  776. is often translated

  777. as complete

  778. or whole.

  779. You must be whole

  780. as your Heavenly Father

  781. is whole.

  782. This word

  783. you may know

  784. the Old Testament

  785. was translated

  786. into Greek

  787. it's called

  788. the Septuagint

  789. and this word

  790. that's used here

  791. teleos

  792. in the Old Testament

  793. is sometimes

  794. translated

  795. shalom

  796. it's replacing

  797. the Hebrew word

  798. shalom

  799. completeness

  800. wholeness

  801. okay

  802. you must be whole

  803. as your Heavenly Father

  804. is whole

  805. and basically

  806. what that would mean

  807. is

  808. it's this idea

  809. that to be whole

  810. your inside heart

  811. attitudes

  812. and motivations

  813. must line up

  814. with your outward

  815. actions

  816. and behaviors

  817. to be whole

  818. as God is whole

  819. means

  820. that your heart

  821. and your actions

  822. are aligned

  823. to that

  824. of the Heavenly Father

  825. you must be perfect

  826. or whole

  827. as your Heavenly Father

  828. is whole

  829. Jesus cares

  830. about our hearts

  831. here

  832. not just

  833. an outward

  834. obedience

  835. he is going

  836. for the heart

  837. as we follow

  838. Jesus

  839. we're not

  840. following a teaching

  841. we're following

  842. a person

  843. and as we do

  844. we become

  845. more and more

  846. like him

  847. conforming our lives

  848. to his word

  849. it's about

  850. becoming

  851. kingdom people

  852. and when we

  853. love

  854. like the Father

  855. we learn

  856. how to love

  857. even

  858. our enemies

  859. and he empowers

  860. us

  861. to do so

  862. we're called

  863. to love

  864. our neighbor

  865. as ourself

  866. that extends

  867. to everyone

  868. including

  869. our enemies

  870. so what

  871. my challenge

  872. for us

  873. myself included

  874. is tonight

  875. is to

  876. as we think

  877. about who

  878. those people

  879. are

  880. that we feel

  881. like actively

  882. oppose us

  883. are those

  884. people

  885. that are

  886. against us

  887. who push

  888. our buttons

  889. who annoy us

  890. who we try

  891. to avoid

  892. who we just

  893. don't like

  894. we can't even

  895. stand to be

  896. around them

  897. whoever those

  898. people are

  899. we must learn

  900. to meditate

  901. on God's

  902. love for us

  903. and what he

  904. has done

  905. for us

  906. as his enemies

  907. what he did

  908. for us

  909. in Jesus

  910. Christ

  911. making us

  912. enemies now

  913. into his

  914. family

  915. his children

  916. meditate on

  917. that until

  918. it gets us

  919. deep down

  920. so that we

  921. can then

  922. love

  923. like our

  924. heavenly

  925. father

  926. let us

  927. pray

  928. God we

  929. thank you

  930. that even

  931. though we

  932. were opposed

  933. to you

  934. we were not

  935. giving you

  936. the credit

  937. you deserve

  938. for everything

  939. in our life

  940. we were not

  941. recognizing

  942. that you

  943. were the

  944. giver

  945. of all

  946. good things

  947. in fact

  948. we didn't

  949. even want

  950. to give

  951. up control

  952. of our

  953. lives

  954. but yet

  955. you

  956. a loving

  957. father

  958. pursued us

  959. that while

  960. we were

  961. enemies

  962. you made

  963. us your

  964. children

  965. through the

  966. blood

  967. of Jesus

  968. Christ

  969. thank you

  970. for doing

  971. that

  972. may we

  973. worship

  974. you

  975. may our

  976. hearts

  977. be turned

  978. toward you

  979. in complete

  980. allegiance

  981. in complete

  982. loyalty

  983. love

  984. in a

  985. fire

  986. in a

  987. passion

  988. that we

  989. would want

  990. to love

  991. as you

  992. love

  993. and may

  994. that spill

  995. over into

  996. all of our

  997. neighbors

  998. including

  999. our enemies

  1000. help us

  1001. to love

  1002. this world

  1003. to love

  1004. the people

  1005. around us

  1006. as you

  1007. love them

  1008. thank you

  1009. for giving us

  1010. your spirit

  1011. who applies

  1012. your word

  1013. to our lives

  1014. so that we

  1015. are empowered

  1016. as your

  1017. children

  1018. because we

  1019. have your

  1020. spirit

  1021. to love

  1022. like you

  1023. love

  1024. please help us

  1025. to do this

  1026. in Jesus

  1027. name

  1028. amen
