  1. Father, we confess that your Church has made texts like this a battleground rather than food,

  2. a place to cast accusations against others rather than a deep truth and a deep mystery to which we should enter into.

  3. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would do a gentle but powerful work in our midst this morning

  4. and bring this Word from your Word deeply into our lives.

  5. And we give, Father, permission.

  6. In fact, we ask that this Word would not merely enter our lives, but that it would speak to our heart and rule in our heart.

  7. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Saviour. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. Amen.

  10. Thank you.

  11. It's loud and dramatic and creates a fuss and a bother.

  12. And it's like really, really, it's as if like if Hollywood was to do it, there'd be piles of noise and it'd just be very, very, very dramatic.

  13. But the surprising thing is that theologians throughout the centuries have described the Holy Spirit as the shy person of the Trinity.

  14. So for us, it should be a little bit of a shock that the shy person of the Trinity is introduced in such a dramatic fashion.

  15. Each of you probably knows somebody who's quite shy.

  16. So just imagine that you heard that when they, this very, very shy person, you hardly get a word out of them,

  17. that they went to this gathering and they came in in outrageous colors, singing at the top of their lungs and dancing and doing cartwheels.

  18. You'd think, what on earth?

  19. That's just a, that's what happened.

  20. Anyway, so that's what this is.

  21. It's a, it's a remarkable and dramatic miracle that we're going to look at.

  22. In fact, depending how you want to look at it, it's, it's a, it's a, a group of miracles, very dramatic about the shy person of the Trinity and God changing how he deals with humanity.

  23. From that moment to this moment until he comes again.

  24. So let's have a look.

  25. In your Bibles, it's Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  26. We're going to be looking at verses 1 to 13.

  27. If you didn't pick up one of these books when you came in, we have these very nice journal Bibles just of the book of Acts.

  28. And if you would like to have one, just ask us.

  29. We'd give it to you for free as a gift.

  30. Allows you to make little notes and everything on one side, your prayers, your observations, maybe your questions.

  31. And so here's how it begins.

  32. Verse 1.

  33. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.

  34. Now, I just want to stop here.

  35. Some of you know that I sort of do that.

  36. You know, one of the things I pray for when I'm doing a narrative, especially a narrative like this, is that I would tell the story and that I'd be able to clarify the story and defend the story and connect the story.

  37. But at the end of the day, trust that the one who tells the story, which is God, that he's going to do the work that only he can do.

  38. So just one of the things which is really interesting.

  39. This is on one level.

  40. This story is about this mysterious third person of the Trinity.

  41. And on one level, it's a text that you can meditate upon.

  42. It's a very inward text talking about God's resting in you.

  43. And we're going to sort of open all that up.

  44. But at the same time that it's a miracle, it's also profoundly historical.

  45. So, for instance, when it says here, when the day of Pentecost arrived, it doesn't say once upon a time, when the day of Pentecost arrived.

  46. And Pentecost is sort of how Christians refer to it in the Old Testament.

  47. It's referred to as the Feast of Weeks.

  48. And our Jewish friends would call it Shavuot.

  49. I don't think I pronounced that correctly.

  50. My pardon to my Jewish friends.

  51. Shavuot.

  52. And that's how they would refer to it.

  53. And it's the second of three harvest festivals that happen in the Jewish calendar where you celebrate God's goodness.

  54. But here's the significant thing.

  55. There's so many historical references in this ancient book and in the Gospels, which should really be understood as ancient eyewitness biographies,

  56. that scholars can date when Jesus died on the cross, either one of two dates.

  57. He either died on the 7th of April, the year 30, or the 3rd of April, the year 33 A.D.

  58. And for a variety of reasons, I think the 3rd of April, 33 A.D. is probably the date.

  59. And so what that means is this.

  60. What they're saying is if you go through and you read Luke and you read this and all the different historical references which he has,

  61. it means that on the 3rd of April, 33, Jesus died on the cross.

  62. And on the 5th of April, in the year 33, Jesus rose from the dead.

  63. The grave was empty.

  64. They never found the body.

  65. And at that point in time, he begins to appear alive to show that he's physically, bodily resurrected to a variety of people in a variety of times over 40 days.

  66. And it means that the 14th of May, the year 33, Jesus ascended into heaven.

  67. So that when you're reading the book of Acts, what sort of happens between Acts 1.1 and Acts, you know, about halfway through the book of Acts,

  68. that's taking place between the 5th of April and the 14th of May in the year 33.

  69. And then the text that we looked at last week, that happened sometime between the 15th of May and the 23rd of May in the year 33 A.D.

  70. because on the 24th of May, 33 A.D., this event happened.

  71. That's what Luke is saying.

  72. Luke is saying if you went back in a time machine, if you happen to be a waiter in the house where there's 120 or so people,

  73. you would see these things happen.

  74. If you weren't one of those, but you're outside and you went back in a time machine,

  75. you would see the things which are going to take place in a few moments.

  76. You'd see this.

  77. You'd see it.

  78. So on one hand, it's profoundly historical.

  79. On the other hand, though, of course, it's talking about the very, very deep mysteries of God.

  80. And as we'll see in a moment, the very, very deepest things of the human heart and our very, very deepest needs.

  81. And it's a fourfold miracle.

  82. Let's look at the first aspect of the miracle, verse 2.

  83. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind,

  84. and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

  85. So this is a miracle of the ear, of sound.

  86. Now, some of you might, in fact, I was going to mention it.

  87. This is my first Sunday wearing two hearing aids.

  88. And actually, to tell you the truth, it's a little bit disconcerting.

  89. Just because my voice is very loud in my head at the 8 o'clock service,

  90. because my voice is so loud in my head,

  91. I had to ask them just to wave at me if I was speaking too quietly.

  92. But one of the things I discovered three years ago

  93. when I had this rare virus attack my right inner ear

  94. and give me moderate, severe hearing loss,

  95. is that I lost the ability most of the time to identify where a sound was coming from.

  96. So it's very disconcerting.

  97. You're walking along, and you hear somebody, and you keep looking behind you.

  98. And then I realize it's the person in front of me that I'm hearing.

  99. It's very disconcerting.

  100. Anyway, there's over 120 people here,

  101. and most of them don't have severe hearing loss.

  102. So they're able to identify that the sound was coming from up to down,

  103. and the sound is coming from above into the room,

  104. and it's turbulent.

  105. It's noisy.

  106. It's like you're hearing a hurricane.

  107. It's not like a little breeze.

  108. It's a tumultuous, loud, hurricane-like sound which fills the room.

  109. So it's a miracle that the ear can recognize.

  110. And then the next one is for the eye, verse 3.

  111. And divided tongues, as of fire, appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

  112. Now, this is a miracle of the eye.

  113. It's something which they see.

  114. Now, this is a very, very good translation,

  115. but there's something even more profound in the original language.

  116. I know there are many people in the room who speak multiple languages.

  117. I've spoken sometimes in gatherings where I've had to be translated,

  118. and in every one of those, you know, I've been warned,

  119. and you have to try to keep the, you know,

  120. try to have not more than about a dozen words at a time.

  121. Even less is better.

  122. And I try to get into a bit of a rhythm.

  123. You know, you say, da-da-da-da-da-da-da,

  124. and I almost even move my body,

  125. and the next person says, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.

  126. And occasionally, if you've ever been in that situation,

  127. I would say, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.

  128. I'd say my ten words,

  129. and three paragraphs later, the other person stops speaking.

  130. And it's because, as you know,

  131. sometimes, like, the words in one language

  132. don't fit very, very easily into another.

  133. So when the Bible is translated,

  134. they can't add, at certain times,

  135. three paragraphs when there's six or seven words.

  136. So what's going on in the original language is this,

  137. that there's one fire that comes.

  138. Just one.

  139. So what they're seeing is they see one fire come into the room,

  140. and then out of that one fire,

  141. individual tongues of fire settle and rest on each person.

  142. So in the original text, it's not as if, I don't know,

  143. like Steve gets some blue fire,

  144. and Stella gets some green fire,

  145. and Louise gets yellow fire,

  146. and Victor gets, you know, dark blue fire,

  147. and it looks like we've all gotten different types of Holy Spirit.

  148. No, it's very clear in the original language

  149. that there's just one coming,

  150. and then it divides and separates,

  151. and there's a personal coming of the fire

  152. to rest upon every person in the room.

  153. And that's a miracle of the eye.

  154. But the next miracle is the most significant one

  155. that would make people realize it really is a miracle.

  156. Look what happens in verse 4.

  157. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

  158. and began to speak in other tongues

  159. as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  160. Now, this is a miracle of our inner self.

  161. You might think you had just been,

  162. something was going on,

  163. you hear a weird noise,

  164. and I don't know, it's just a weird noise.

  165. And all of us have maybe seen things

  166. that we know can't,

  167. we just misinterpret it.

  168. I mean, I just,

  169. just the other day,

  170. a fellow that I went to his funeral,

  171. like about six months ago,

  172. for a moment I could have sworn

  173. he was walking across the street.

  174. And I just realized he just looked like him.

  175. And maybe I need glasses,

  176. not for distances.

  177. I use my glasses for reading.

  178. And so maybe you could think that.

  179. But let me tell you,

  180. every single one of you,

  181. if you all of a sudden spoke,

  182. if all of a sudden you started speaking Mongolian,

  183. now that's a miracle.

  184. We're speaking,

  185. not everybody except Steve speaking,

  186. and Anton speaking Russian.

  187. Like, that's a miracle.

  188. And that's something very, very deep

  189. at the level of the mind, the heart,

  190. everything,

  191. that you can all of a sudden

  192. speak another language.

  193. And there's something else

  194. which is in here

  195. which is very, very interesting.

  196. If you notice in verse 4 again,

  197. it says,

  198. as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  199. Now, sometimes that can mean

  200. in the original language,

  201. ecstatic speech.

  202. But it's more customary to mean

  203. that this,

  204. it's simple, emphatic speech.

  205. And so what they're getting is

  206. it's not so much that all of a sudden

  207. they're just jumping up and down

  208. and going crazy

  209. and falling all over the place.

  210. Not that there's anything

  211. necessarily wrong with that.

  212. But in this case,

  213. all of a sudden what they're hearing

  214. is simple, clear, emphatic,

  215. declarative, easy-to-understand speech

  216. with a type of power and boldness to it.

  217. And that's the miracle.

  218. We'll get to the fourth aspect

  219. of the miracle later on in the text.

  220. And the Holy Spirit is described

  221. right in these things

  222. in verse 3 and 4

  223. that each individual flame

  224. comes and rests on them

  225. and it's filled.

  226. And the other thing

  227. which is in the original language

  228. and it's only partially there

  229. but it gets teased out

  230. as you read the rest of the book,

  231. that the Holy Spirit

  232. comes upon each one of them

  233. as a permanent possession.

  234. That's why it marks a change

  235. in how God is relating to His people

  236. on His planet, in His creation.

  237. That there's this sense

  238. of it becomes,

  239. the Holy Spirit becomes

  240. a permanent possession.

  241. Up until now,

  242. the Holy Spirit has come upon people

  243. for a moment or a season

  244. but now it comes upon

  245. ordinary people

  246. as a permanent possession.

  247. You see,

  248. what the text is saying

  249. is that

  250. this is all part of God's plan,

  251. that Jesus has sent this,

  252. that

  253. God sends Jesus

  254. to rescue us,

  255. to deliver us

  256. so that our sins

  257. will be forgiven.

  258. And when He dies on the cross

  259. and rises from the dead,

  260. when we put our faith

  261. and trust in Jesus,

  262. our sins are forgiven.

  263. And we are clothed

  264. with the righteousness of Christ,

  265. with all of His goodness

  266. and purity.

  267. We are clothed with that.

  268. And it's not just that,

  269. but we also become

  270. God's children

  271. by adoption and grace

  272. as the Holy Spirit

  273. comes within the believer

  274. and rests or dwells

  275. within ordinary people

  276. like you and me.

  277. And that's what the gospel is.

  278. That's the invitation

  279. to hear what Jesus has done

  280. and what He did it for you.

  281. And we share it

  282. in the hope

  283. that people will hear that

  284. and say,

  285. Lord, take me.

  286. I want to be yours.

  287. There's the news

  288. and there's the hope

  289. that the news

  290. will be responded to

  291. by ordinary people

  292. like you and me.

  293. And there's nobody

  294. so far from God.

  295. There's nobody so broken.

  296. There's that God

  297. will not do it for you.

  298. And there's nobody

  299. so rich and powerful

  300. and successful

  301. that does not need this.

  302. It is a humbling

  303. of us as human beings

  304. to know that this,

  305. what Jesus has done for us

  306. is for us.

  307. And the coming

  308. of the Holy Spirit

  309. is part of that forgiveness

  310. and clothed

  311. with the righteousness

  312. of Christ

  313. and becoming God's child

  314. by adoption and grace.

  315. And the Holy Spirit

  316. comes upon us.

  317. It's for ordinary people

  318. like you and me

  319. when we respond

  320. to the good news.

  321. It's so spectacularly wonderful.

  322. Years ago,

  323. I think it was

  324. in the 1600s,

  325. there was this sort of

  326. odd man named

  327. Blaise Pascal.

  328. He was absolutely brilliant

  329. and people will talk

  330. about how, in a sense,

  331. the beginning of computers

  332. can be traced back to him.

  333. All this brilliance.

  334. But he was also

  335. a very devout Christian.

  336. And he wrote

  337. these little pensées,

  338. these little meditations,

  339. and they didn't realize

  340. he'd been writing them

  341. his whole life

  342. until they died

  343. and they found it hidden.

  344. And they pieced it together

  345. and it's this book

  346. of sayings of his.

  347. And it's very,

  348. very well worth reading.

  349. If you'd like to read

  350. just the part

  351. that's sort of

  352. the most relevant for us,

  353. get Peter Kreeft's version

  354. called

  355. Christianity for Modern Pagans,

  356. which is like,

  357. he gives you the pensée

  358. and he gives you

  359. a little of some comments

  360. to help you to understand.

  361. It's an absolutely

  362. brilliant book.

  363. But one of the things

  364. that Blaise Pascal said,

  365. because he could already

  366. see the cultural despisers

  367. that were very present

  368. in Europe in the 1600s.

  369. And he said that

  370. if you want to share

  371. the gospel with somebody

  372. as an evangelist,

  373. to be an apologist,

  374. there's two types of tasks

  375. that you need

  376. to take upon yourself.

  377. One of them is the fact

  378. that every human being

  379. who's outside of the faith

  380. has reasons

  381. why the Christian faith

  382. cannot possibly be true.

  383. Everybody has them

  384. who's outside of the faith.

  385. And so as an evangelist

  386. or as an apologist,

  387. you need to figure out

  388. how to answer those reasons

  389. why, you know,

  390. Christianity can't be true

  391. because of this.

  392. And so you need

  393. to try to answer it.

  394. But part of his

  395. brilliant insight

  396. was that there's

  397. a deeper issue,

  398. there's a second issue

  399. going on.

  400. And that is,

  401. they don't want it

  402. to be true.

  403. They don't want

  404. the Christian message

  405. to be true.

  406. I mean, that was true

  407. with me before

  408. I became a Christian.

  409. I didn't want it

  410. to be true.

  411. Like, I just did not

  412. want it to be true.

  413. And so Pascal said

  414. then the person

  415. who wants to share

  416. Jesus with others

  417. not only has to think

  418. of ways to answer

  419. the objections

  420. but also to pray

  421. and use the imagination

  422. and creativity

  423. in such a way

  424. that the other person

  425. comes to the point

  426. where they want it

  427. to be true.

  428. That they're not

  429. wanting it to be true

  430. starts to go

  431. that, gosh,

  432. maybe it's true.

  433. God,

  434. like maybe it's

  435. actually true

  436. in a way

  437. that I need

  438. to respond to it.

  439. And that's

  440. the whole thing.

  441. Now, I mention

  442. all of this

  443. because

  444. on one hand,

  445. when we hear

  446. that the Holy Spirit

  447. rests on us

  448. and fills us,

  449. it's touching

  450. on one of the

  451. deepest fears.

  452. I mean,

  453. for those of you

  454. who are outside

  455. the faith

  456. may be watching this,

  457. it's an ongoing

  458. fear for Christians

  459. but it's definitely

  460. for those outside

  461. the faith,

  462. it's a deep fear.

  463. Why?

  464. Because you see,

  465. well, okay,

  466. like I just told you,

  467. give your life to Christ

  468. and the Holy Spirit

  469. rests upon you

  470. and empowers you.

  471. Well, that's sort of cool.

  472. Like, who wouldn't

  473. want to have a superpower?

  474. Who wouldn't want

  475. to have a buddy

  476. with a superpower

  477. that you could just

  478. call them up

  479. and say,

  480. I have this issue?

  481. Who wouldn't want

  482. it that you're driving

  483. and the person's

  484. superpower could move

  485. all the, you know,

  486. the slow drivers

  487. out of the way

  488. so you can get there

  489. on time

  490. or just get you

  491. there on time?

  492. That's sort of cool

  493. to have a superpower.

  494. On the other hand,

  495. many of us,

  496. what we really want

  497. of God is,

  498. whether you're

  499. a follower of Christ

  500. or not,

  501. is that we get

  502. into big trouble

  503. and we'd sort of like

  504. for a moment

  505. for Christ,

  506. for God,

  507. just to come in

  508. and sort it all out,

  509. just to shut this person out,

  510. make this person

  511. realize they're wrong,

  512. you know,

  513. help you get more money

  514. to solve your finances

  515. and we would just like

  516. God to come in

  517. and just fix it,

  518. but if we're honest,

  519. then we'd like him

  520. to go away

  521. so we can get on back

  522. with our life.

  523. Thank you very much.

  524. And,

  525. but the Holy Spirit

  526. is the third person

  527. of the Trinity

  528. and he cannot rest

  529. and fill you

  530. without possessing you.

  531. And that is our deep fear.

  532. The deep longing

  533. of our heart

  534. is to own ourselves.

  535. part of the problem

  536. that we have

  537. in our world

  538. right now

  539. is that love

  540. requires self-surrender

  541. and that's very,

  542. very hard.

  543. And,

  544. you know,

  545. we worship,

  546. in a sense,

  547. I did it my way.

  548. You know,

  549. we worship the idea

  550. of being the captain

  551. of our own soul

  552. and the idea of,

  553. you see,

  554. we talk about

  555. possessing the Holy Spirit,

  556. but really what it,

  557. what happens

  558. is the Holy Spirit

  559. possesses us,

  560. the Holy Spirit

  561. possesses you,

  562. so you can possess

  563. the Holy Spirit

  564. and begin

  565. to possess yourself.

  566. And that's a very,

  567. very deep fear

  568. that we have,

  569. that I am not my own.

  570. Now,

  571. um,

  572. Augustine,

  573. writing around

  574. the year 400,

  575. he has a very helpful line

  576. to help us realize

  577. where this idea

  578. of being possessed

  579. by the Holy Spirit

  580. that makes us worried,

  581. not just possessed

  582. to help us

  583. through this moment

  584. of loneliness,

  585. this trouble

  586. in our life,

  587. but a possession,

  588. an entering in

  589. to make his home

  590. within us

  591. that goes into

  592. all eternity,

  593. that he'll never

  594. let us go

  595. as to why this is good.

  596. Augustine had a very,

  597. very helpful quote.

  598. He said famously

  599. that,

  600. God,

  601. you have made us

  602. for yourself

  603. and our hearts

  604. are restless

  605. till they rest in you.

  606. Others have talked

  607. about how

  608. for we as human beings,

  609. since we were meant

  610. to be connected

  611. to God,

  612. there's actually

  613. a gap within us.

  614. You know,

  615. those of you

  616. who've lost

  617. a loved one

  618. when they die,

  619. it feels as if

  620. there's part of you

  621. that's just,

  622. that's gone.

  623. Those of you

  624. who've experienced

  625. the tragedy

  626. of divorce

  627. where you really

  628. love the other person

  629. you were betrayed,

  630. it's as if you feel

  631. that there's a part of you

  632. that's just been ripped out

  633. and now there's a hole there

  634. and you're not whole.

  635. And Augustine recognizes

  636. that because we've been

  637. created by the triune God

  638. that every,

  639. and we've rebelled

  640. against him

  641. and gone far from him

  642. that every human being

  643. has a part of them

  644. and we try to fill it

  645. with power,

  646. with pride,

  647. with money,

  648. with sex,

  649. with success,

  650. but they never fill

  651. that hole

  652. that only God can fill.

  653. And that's why he said,

  654. Father,

  655. you have made us

  656. for yourself

  657. and our hearts

  658. are restless

  659. until he rests in you.

  660. So if you could put up

  661. the first point,

  662. Claire,

  663. what we see here

  664. in Pentecost

  665. is the Holy Spirit

  666. rests on you

  667. so that your restless heart

  668. can begin to rest

  669. in the one

  670. who made you

  671. for himself.

  672. The Holy Spirit

  673. rests on you

  674. so that your restless heart

  675. can begin to rest

  676. in the one

  677. who made you

  678. for himself.

  679. It's a beginning.

  680. The world,

  681. the flesh,

  682. and the devil

  683. will keep on

  684. getting us distracted

  685. as part of the reason

  686. why we need to gather

  687. and worship

  688. just to remember

  689. these important truths,

  690. to be in God's presence

  691. with others,

  692. to be accepted by others,

  693. to begin to make friends,

  694. to build community,

  695. to make a difference

  696. in the world

  697. and just remind each other,

  698. yeah,

  699. you know,

  700. yeah,

  701. this is what's true.

  702. this is what's true.

  703. And

  704. we begin to see this,

  705. that it's not an annihilation,

  706. but it's an answering

  707. of the deepest longing

  708. in our hearts

  709. in a couple of ways

  710. in the rest

  711. of this particular story.

  712. Of course,

  713. it's all the way

  714. through the Bible,

  715. but even within this story,

  716. we begin to see

  717. two particular ways

  718. how what I've just said

  719. is true.

  720. Let's continue

  721. going to verse 5.

  722. Now,

  723. there were dwelling

  724. in Jerusalem Jews,

  725. devout men

  726. from every nation

  727. under heaven,

  728. and at this sound

  729. the multitude

  730. came together

  731. and they were bewildered

  732. because each one

  733. was hearing them

  734. speak in his own language.

  735. Now,

  736. this is just

  737. a very important

  738. small detail

  739. because remember,

  740. Luke is claiming

  741. that this is what

  742. actually happened.

  743. And so,

  744. what he's saying is

  745. because it's one

  746. of the three

  747. major festivals

  748. where Jewish people

  749. would come to Jerusalem,

  750. and they've already

  751. been there

  752. for the first one

  753. which is Passover.

  754. Some have stayed

  755. for the second one

  756. which is now

  757. and then there's

  758. the third one

  759. which is going

  760. to come up.

  761. And so,

  762. the city is crowded

  763. and what they hear

  764. is this profoundly

  765. loud,

  766. destructive,

  767. I mean,

  768. they might worry,

  769. like a hurricane

  770. type noise

  771. and so they gather.

  772. So,

  773. what's not happening,

  774. it's not as if

  775. there's a group

  776. of,

  777. you know,

  778. 15 people

  779. in a quiet,

  780. quiet room

  781. and there's a little

  782. bit of incense

  783. and a candle

  784. and maybe

  785. the odd little gong

  786. and everybody's

  787. all meditating

  788. and then,

  789. you know,

  790. after it's all over

  791. they say,

  792. you know,

  793. I just really

  794. had this feeling

  795. as if there was

  796. a noise

  797. and fire

  798. came upon us

  799. and they all said,

  800. oh yeah,

  801. that's what happened.

  802. You know,

  803. I even felt like

  804. I could be,

  805. you know,

  806. speaking other languages,

  807. yeah,

  808. that's what I all

  809. felt like happened.

  810. Well,

  811. nobody saw it,

  812. there's no evidence

  813. for it,

  814. it's just people

  815. all talking like that.

  816. No,

  817. this is part of

  818. the public aspect

  819. of the miracle

  820. that we'll find out

  821. later that over

  822. 3,000 people gathered

  823. because the noise

  824. was so loud

  825. and the other thing

  826. about it

  827. is that it helps us

  828. to understand

  829. how

  830. this is all

  831. happening in Jerusalem,

  832. it's happening

  833. 50 days,

  834. remember I said

  835. that,

  836. excuse me,

  837. that this is happening

  838. on the 15th,

  839. 14th of May,

  840. sorry,

  841. the 24th of May,

  842. 33,

  843. and on the 5th

  844. of April,

  845. 33,

  846. Jesus rose

  847. from the dead

  848. in Jerusalem

  849. and so,

  850. you know,

  851. nowadays,

  852. there's just

  853. in the paper,

  854. somebody in Oklahoma

  855. got the,

  856. got executed

  857. capital punishment

  858. and it's reported

  859. in the paper

  860. but,

  861. you know,

  862. there's only a couple

  863. of people there

  864. who see it

  865. but when the Romans

  866. crucified people,

  867. they intentionally

  868. did it

  869. in as public

  870. a place as possible

  871. because the terror

  872. and revulsion

  873. was part of the purpose.

  874. The sheer

  875. causing terror

  876. to conquered

  877. populations

  878. into slaves

  879. and low status

  880. individuals

  881. was in fact

  882. not a bug

  883. but a designed

  884. feature

  885. and so,

  886. literally,

  887. thousands of people

  888. saw Jesus die,

  889. literally,

  890. thousands of people

  891. would have known

  892. that the grave

  893. was empty

  894. and,

  895. you know,

  896. this is a challenge

  897. for our skeptical

  898. friends.

  899. Generally speaking,

  900. skeptics don't actually

  901. look at the evidence

  902. for the resurrection.

  903. They just dismiss it

  904. but what else

  905. could account,

  906. we're going to see

  907. in a few moments

  908. that 3,000 people,

  909. over 3,000 people

  910. came to believe

  911. that Jesus died

  912. and rose from the dead.

  913. Like,

  914. what started

  915. the Big Bang?

  916. Right?

  917. It must be true

  918. because I found it

  919. on the internet

  920. when I looked

  921. but according

  922. to the internet,

  923. 2.4 billion people

  924. on the planet

  925. call themselves

  926. Christians.

  927. Now,

  928. even if a large number

  929. of those

  930. aren't real Christians,

  931. that's really astounding.

  932. We have this small,

  933. tiny thing

  934. in Jerusalem

  935. of a man

  936. dying on a cross

  937. and then

  938. three days later

  939. we have one woman

  940. say she saw him alive

  941. and then there's more

  942. and then there's more

  943. and then there's thousands

  944. of Christians

  945. and then there's Christians

  946. in Samaria

  947. and then there's Christians

  948. in Asia Minor

  949. and then there's Christians

  950. in Rome

  951. and then there's Christians

  952. in Europe

  953. and then there's Christians

  954. in Africa

  955. and it goes on and on

  956. and on and on

  957. and on and on

  958. like a Big Bang

  959. that goes from

  960. this one explosion

  961. and what can account

  962. for that

  963. other than

  964. the real resurrection

  965. of Jesus

  966. and the power

  967. of the Holy Spirit?

  968. There is no better

  969. explanation than that.

  970. There is no better

  971. explanation than that.

  972. But what was the small thing

  973. about our hearts

  974. being restless?

  975. Well it's sort of

  976. look at verse 7

  977. it's a small feature

  978. that we might not notice

  979. and they were amazed

  980. and astonished

  981. saying

  982. are not all these

  983. who are speaking

  984. Galileans

  985. and how is it

  986. that we hear

  987. each of us

  988. in our own

  989. native language

  990. and it's going to give

  991. the languages

  992. which I'll read

  993. in a moment.

  994. So here's the thing

  995. what they recognized

  996. so Galileans

  997. by and large

  998. were rural

  999. working class

  1000. people

  1001. who weren't educated

  1002. so when they heard

  1003. when the Parthians

  1004. and Medes

  1005. and all those

  1006. were hearing

  1007. their local dialects

  1008. and local languages

  1009. they were hearing

  1010. people speak

  1011. their language

  1012. perfectly

  1013. but with a working

  1014. class Galilean

  1015. accent.

1016. So it would be as if

  1017. God gave me

  1018. the gift of tongues

  1019. to speak French

  1020. all of a sudden

  1021. and I'm not speaking

  1022. Parisian French

  1023. maybe I am speaking

  1024. Parisian French

1025. but it's very very very

  1026. clear that I'm

  1027. an Anglophone

1028. I have an Anglophone accent.

1029. So that's one of the things

  1030. which is so beautiful

  1031. about this

1032. you see as the Holy Spirit

  1033. doesn't come

1034. and all of a sudden

  1035. try to make these

  1036. these Galileans

1037. as if they're very very

  1038. well educated

  1039. rich

  1040. you know Jewish people

  1041. who've mastered

  1042. these languages

  1043. flawlessly

  1044. they've mastered

  1045. them flawlessly

  1046. but they still keep

  1047. their working class

  1048. sounding accent

  1049. when they speak

  1050. these languages.

1051. You see the Holy Spirit

1052. when he comes upon us

  1053. and fills us

1054. he does not annihilate you

  1055. like as I said

  1056. the Holy Spirit

  1057. possesses us

1058. so that we can possess

  1059. the Holy Spirit

  1060. and begin to actually

  1061. have self-possession

  1062. which of course

1063. is one of the great

  1064. desires in our age

  1065. to have self-possession

  1066. we read things

  1067. about how to have

  1068. self-possession

  1069. how to practice

  1070. mindfulness

  1071. and all sorts of

  1072. other types of things

1073. to try to give us

  1074. some type of

  1075. possession of ourselves

  1076. we go to

  1077. self-help gurus

  1078. who can talk about

  1079. how it's really

1080. you know you can control

  1081. all sorts of things

  1082. but the hardest thing

  1083. to control is yourself

1084. the hardest thing to have

  1085. is to actually

  1086. possess yourself

  1087. and that's what

  1088. the Holy Spirit does

1089. and it doesn't do it

  1090. by annihilating us

  1091. but by keeping you

  1092. in your individual

  1093. in your individuality

  1094. and then the second

  1095. thing is this

1096. just sort of as we

1097. start to draw to a close

  1098. they start to tell

  1099. the languages

  1100. Parthians and Medes

  1101. verse 9

  1102. Parthians and Medes

  1103. and Elamites

  1104. and residents of

  1105. Mesopotamia

1106. and just sort of pause

  1107. there's the Roman Empire

  1108. that goes like this

  1109. and then I guess

1110. from your point of view

  1111. down here

  1112. there's another empire

  1113. called the Parthian Empire

  1114. basically Iran

  1115. and Persia

1116. and so it's the Roman Empire

  1117. and this other

  1118. neighboring empire

1119. and then the other thing

1120. is that from the point

1121. of view of all these nations

  1122. from Jerusalem's point

  1123. of view

  1124. it's north, south, east

  1125. and west

  1126. that's sort of how

  1127. it's

1128. if you went on the map

  1129. and you saw it

  1130. that's what they're doing

  1131. not in a

  1132. you know

  1133. like a clock order

  1134. but just here

  1135. and here

  1136. and here

  1137. and here

  1138. and so

  1139. Parthians

  1140. verse 9

  1141. and Medes

  1142. and Elamites

  1143. and residents

  1144. of Mesopotamia

  1145. and Judea

  1146. and Cappadocia

  1147. and Pontus

  1148. and Asia

  1149. Phrygia

  1150. and Pamphylia

  1151. Egypt

1152. and the parts of Libya

  1153. belonging to Cyrene

  1154. and visitors from Rome

  1155. both Jews

  1156. and proselytes

  1157. Cretans

  1158. and Arabians

  1159. we hear them telling

  1160. in our own tongues

  1161. the mighty works

  1162. of God

  1163. that's what they're hearing

  1164. and all were amazed

  1165. and perplexed

  1166. saying to one another

  1167. what does this mean

  1168. but others mocking

  1169. said they are filled

  1170. with new wine

  1171. which just goes

  1172. to show

  1173. by the way

  1174. that you can have

  1175. the most remarkable event

  1176. and the most remarkable

  1177. argument

  1178. and people can still

  1179. be flippant

1180. and it's been that way

  1181. for thousands of years

  1182. that's sort of

  1183. what that means

1184. so what's going on here

  1185. is that the wonderful

  1186. things of God

  1187. well here it is

1188. if you could put up

  1189. the final point

1190. that would be very helpful

  1191. the Holy Spirit

  1192. delivers you

  1193. from the crushing

  1194. burden

  1195. of proud

  1196. self-centeredness

  1197. to the glorious

  1198. liberty and joy

  1199. of humbly

  1200. praising

  1201. the true

  1202. and living God

  1203. the Holy Spirit

  1204. delivers you

  1205. from the crushing

  1206. burden

  1207. of proud

  1208. self-centeredness

  1209. to the glorious

  1210. liberty and joy

  1211. of humbly

  1212. praising

  1213. the true

  1214. and living God

  1215. see this

  1216. our hearts are restless

1217. till they rest in him

  1218. and

  1219. well

  1220. you know

  1221. here it is

  1222. one of the important

  1223. things to learn

  1224. in life

1225. and try to figure out

  1226. is when you're being

  1227. convicted of having

  1228. done something wrong

  1229. and when the voice

  1230. in your head

1231. or the voices around you

  1232. are accusatory

  1233. voices

  1234. accusatory

  1235. is different

  1236. than being convicted

  1237. of doing something wrong

  1238. accusatory

  1239. is

  1240. you know

  1241. I'm ugly

  1242. I'm never any good

  1243. I'm a terrible person

  1244. like it

  1245. it just

  1246. completely

  1247. it's like a

  1248. a boot

  1249. kicking you

  1250. and a fist

  1251. pushing you down

1252. and it can be hard

  1253. sometimes to distinguish them

  1254. but there's these

  1255. accusatory voices

  1256. and some of us

1257. maybe we came here today

  1258. experiencing them

  1259. some of us

1260. maybe in a long season

  1261. of it

1262. all of us have had

  1263. at least some seasons

  1264. of these accusatory voices

  1265. you know

  1266. crushing us

  1267. and if you've been

  1268. in a season

  1269. of accusatory voices

  1270. or if you've gone

  1271. to some counseling

  1272. therapy about it

  1273. one of the things

1274. that they often try to do

1275. is to try to have you get

  1276. you see it's very

  1277. self-centered

  1278. and what you need

  1279. is something

  1280. that maybe will

  1281. help you to forget

  1282. yourself for a bit

1283. and maybe some of us

  1284. have experienced this

  1285. and maybe it's

1286. you go to a concert

  1287. or something

1288. and all of a sudden

  1289. the music is just

  1290. really glorious

  1291. and for a while

  1292. you forget about yourself

  1293. and you're caught up

  1294. in the music

1295. or maybe you go off

  1296. into nature

  1297. or something

  1298. and you realize

  1299. for a moment

  1300. that just

  1301. you've been enjoying

  1302. the trees

  1303. and the views

1304. and for a brief moment

  1305. you've forgotten

  1306. about yourself

  1307. caught up

  1308. outside of yourself

  1309. and the accusatory

  1310. voices are gone

  1311. and you see

  1312. one of the things

  1313. and a secular counselor

1314. will never tell you this

1315. is that one of the things

  1316. that we need

  1317. I mean it's very good

  1318. of course

  1319. to preach to yourself

  1320. and say you know

  1321. you're loved by God

  1322. you're loved by Christ

  1323. he's adopted

1324. he'll never let you go

  1325. but even more important

  1326. is to stop thinking

  1327. about yourself

  1328. and to praise God

  1329. and what we see

  1330. in this story

  1331. is this profound

  1332. self-forgetfulness

  1333. where they're caught up

  1334. in praising God

1335. the true and living God

  1336. and this points

1337. to what the Holy Spirit

  1338. is going to do

  1339. in our lives

  1340. is that not only

  1341. do we get comfortable

  1342. with the fact

  1343. that we really need

  1344. to be possessed

  1345. by God

  1346. and live in Him

  1347. and have Him

  1348. as our identity

  1349. that it's this

  1350. profound act of grace

  1351. that there's nothing

  1352. within us

  1353. that He's ever going

  1354. to discover

  1355. that He didn't already

  1356. know when Jesus

  1357. died for us

  1358. and to begin

  1359. to rest in Him

  1360. so that our

  1361. restless hearts

  1362. have rest

  1363. and to be taken

  1364. out of ourselves

  1365. more and more

  1366. so that we

  1367. not only are able

  1368. you see

  1369. it's also when you

1370. are able to praise God

1371. and taken out of yourself

  1372. that you can also

  1373. start to see

1374. the needs of the world

  1375. around you

  1376. it's a

  1377. it seems

  1378. counterintuitive

  1379. but it's actually

  1380. very deeply intuitive

1381. that if you sort of

  1382. get yourself out of

1383. navel-gazing all of the time

  1384. and praise God

  1385. then you actually

  1386. also see His world

  1387. and you see

  1388. everything in the world

  1389. that can just

  1390. that can be done

  1391. to His glory

  1392. and honor

  1393. and that's this

  1394. profound work

  1395. of the Holy Spirit

  1396. and there's more

  1397. I want to say

  1398. but I'm going to

  1399. stop with that

  1400. and there's a

  1401. missiological text

  1402. which is really there

  1403. and it's just so

  1404. profoundly

  1405. I guess the third

  1406. thing about how

  1407. He doesn't crush you

  1408. to have you

  1409. possess you

  1410. is the fact that

  1411. your heart language

  1412. is respected

1413. and that you praise God

  1414. in your heart language

  1415. it's what should

  1416. give us this

  1417. impetus

  1418. to realize

  1419. that what unites us

  1420. with other Christians

  1421. is our praising

  1422. of God

  1423. and to seek

  1424. to so share

  1425. the gospel

  1426. with people

  1427. and other

  1428. of every people

  1429. group

  1430. because we know

  1431. that God

  1432. wants people

  1433. from every people

  1434. group

  1435. to praise Him

  1436. in their heart

  1437. language

  1438. let's stand

  1439. please stand

  1440. just bow our heads

  1441. in prayer

  1442. Father

  1443. later on

  1444. in the book

  1445. of Acts

  1446. you're going to

  1447. tell us

  1448. that

  1449. that

  1450. the early Christians

  1451. were learning

  1452. to walk

  1453. day by day

  1454. in the fear

  1455. of you

  1456. and in the comfort

  1457. of the Holy Spirit

  1458. trusting you

  1459. to do your work

  1460. in the world

  1461. and use them

  1462. and we ask that

  1463. for ourselves

  1464. Father

  1465. if there are any

  1466. here or any

  1467. watching

  1468. who have not yet

  1469. given their lives

  1470. to Christ

  1471. Father we ask

  1472. that your Holy Spirit

  1473. bring them

  1474. to that point

  1475. where they call out

  1476. to you

  1477. that Jesus

  1478. would be their Savior

  1479. and their Lord

  1480. and Father

  1481. for us

  1482. you know

  1483. Jesus is our Savior

  1484. and Lord

  1485. and you know

  1486. how the world

  1487. and the flesh

  1488. and the devil

  1489. are bending ourselves

  1490. we're bending ourselves

  1491. out of shape

  1492. and the world

  1493. and the devil

  1494. is bending us

  1495. out of shape

  1496. and the crushing

  1497. burden of our pride

  1498. and of despair

  1499. and you know

  1500. Father

  1501. those of us

  1502. struggling

  1503. with shouting

  1504. accusation

  1505. deep into our hearts

  1506. and so Father

1507. we call out to you

  1508. and ask Father

  1509. that you would

  1510. grip us

  1511. with this wonderful news

1512. and that your Holy Spirit

  1513. Father

  1514. would move

  1515. in our hearts

1516. so that we might know

  1517. that we belong

  1518. to you

  1519. and that our hearts

  1520. might rest in you

1521. and that as our hearts

  1522. rest in you

1523. that you will lead us

  1524. to this self-effacing

  1525. praising of you

  1526. and being able

  1527. to declare

  1528. your wonderful deeds

  1529. in the heart language

  1530. of all the people

  1531. groups in the world

  1532. Father

  1533. do this wonderful work

  1534. within us

  1535. and we ask this

1536. in the name of Jesus

  1537. your Son

  1538. and our Savior

  1539. Amen

1540. in the name of Jesus

  1541. of God

1542. in the name of Jesus

  1543. thank you

  1544. and have three

  1545. for nosotros

  1546. and have

  1547. thank you

  1548. for their love

  1549. and I know

  1550. all the time

  1551. and the way

  1552. Dios

  1553. and the you

  1554. so I find out

  1555. as ours

  1556. we ask and

  1557. of all the people

  1558. to do this

  1559. for you

  1560. as well

  1561. as would

  1562. us

  1563. before

  1564. Gen
