  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah,

  3. either by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all,

  4. would you pray for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people

  5. like yourself? The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian,

  6. we really, I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the

  7. Bible, they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will do

  8. what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a non-Christian

  9. checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't hesitate to send us

  10. questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the types of things

  11. that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would bring this part of your Word to us. Bring it deep into

  13. our hearts. And Father, in the context of the gospel, bring this, your Word, into our hearts,

  14. so that your Word will rule in our hearts, that it'll form our hearts, and that we will live lives,

  15. Father, that are free, and that bring you glory. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son,

  16. and our Savior. Amen. Please be seated. I don't have a lot of people that I know that are Jewish,

  17. or at least that might have more people that I know that are Jewish. I just don't know that they're

  18. Jewish, just as lots of people might know Christians and not realize that they're a Christian.

  19. But for those that I do know are Jewish, as I've bumped into them over the last few days,

  20. I've made a point of going up to them and asking how they're doing. I ask them how their family and

  21. friends are doing, if their family and friends are safe. And then I tell them if there's anything I

  22. or my church can do to help you, just to let me know, or let your rabbi know if you have a rabbi,

  23. and we'd be glad to do what we could to help you at this time. And they've all been very

  24. appreciative. One person that I talked to this week, she's an older woman, and she uses a walker,

  25. and she's a real character. And she shared, she said, I really appreciate that. I know you're a

  26. Christian, and I really appreciate that you would say that to me. And then she said, you know,

  27. many of my friends, I guess around her own age, were very frightened. And then she burst into this

  28. big smile, and she said, but I just feel like I have to tell everybody I meet that I'm Jewish.

  29. And I just sort of completely defy those types of fears. And she's a real character.

  30. You know, in the providence of God, as you know, it's very rare that I would sort of switch my sermon

  31. to talk about something which is quite contemporary. And I'm not doing that this week. But in the

  32. providence of God, the text that we're going to look at today is actually very relevant to what's

  33. going on right now in the world and in Canada. Because, in fact, what I can tell you is if you

  34. had brought a Jewish friend to church today, I only had Josiah read the first 10 verses. We're

  35. going to look at the first, all 26 verses in chapter 3. And if they had been sitting beside

  36. you, your Jewish friend, when they come to certain verses, you would have felt your Jewish friend stiffen.

  37. And you would have felt them, you would just feel that all of a sudden, they went from just sort of

  38. being relaxed to being very tense. Because in fact, in this text of scripture that we're going to use,

  39. are one of the main texts that people who call themselves Christians throughout the centuries

  40. when they wanted to kill Jewish people, have used as a justification to kill Jewish people.

  41. It's in the text that we're going to look at today. And so when they hear, if we had a Jewish

  42. friend with us and they, that you hear these things, they would, you, they would just noticeably get very,

  43. very tense. And given that in Canada, we have people yelling, from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,

  44. which is very unambiguously a call for the death of Jewish people.

  45. And the erasing of the Jewish nation.

  46. It is exactly that.

  47. So it's very telling. It's very providential that we will look at a text that seems to support what some

  48. Christians, or who call themselves Christians, have done throughout the centuries when they've

  49. initiated a violent, murderous tax on Jewish people.

  50. So let's walk towards this. And we're going to look at Acts chapter 3. And actually, Acts chapter 3 and 4 are really,

Acts 3 chapter mention Acts 3 chapter mention

  51. in a sense, one story in four parts. And today, we're just going to look at chapter 3, the first two parts.

  52. And then next week, we'll look at the rest of the story, parts 3 and 4. And it's actually very,

  53. very ironic, or I didn't say it's ironic. It's actually very telling that this text that has been used by

  54. Christians to justify murderous actions towards Jewish people actually begins with a remarkable healing.

  55. But I'm just going to say something here. Any person who calls themselves a Christian,

  56. who hates Jewish people, doesn't know the Bible.

  57. They are completely,

  58. I'm not exaggerating,

  59. they are completely and utterly

  60. ignorant of the Bible.

  61. But unfortunately, that has happened

  62. much in the past. Anyway, let's look at it.

  63. So here, chapter 3,

  64. what's happened, we're reading an ancient history,

  65. eyewitness history of Jesus,

  66. I mean, sorry, not Jesus, an ancient eyewitness

  67. history, written by an eyewitness

  68. and based on eyewitness

  69. testimony of sort of the first 30-ish

  70. years of the Jesus movement.

  71. It begins in Jerusalem, it will end

  72. in Rome. And so it is

  73. really, literally, a Jesus movement

  74. that starts to encircle

  75. the empire and ends

  76. right in the very center of the empire.

  77. And

  78. Jesus has died

  79. and risen from the dead, and

  80. 50 days later, the Holy Spirit falls.

  81. We Christians now

  82. call it the day of Pentecost.

  83. And then, right after that

  84. happens, Peter preaches the first

  85. Christian sermon, and then we get

  86. a bit of a summary of the early church.

  87. And now we have this next story.

  88. And we don't know exactly how late it is,

  89. they don't give enough specific time markers,

  90. but probably within a couple of days

  91. or a couple of weeks, this next story

  92. happens, and here's how it goes.

  93. Now, Peter and John, that's two

  94. of the apostles, were going up to the temple

  95. at the hour of prayer, the ninth

  96. hour, which sort of is three-ish.

  97. So at three-ish,

  98. they went up to the temple to pray.

  99. And a man

  100. lame from birth was being

  101. carried,

  102. sorry, I have to move my notes.

  103. A man

  104. lame from birth was being carried,

  105. whom they laid daily at the gate

  106. of the temple, that is called

  107. the Beautiful Gate, to ask

  108. alms of those entering the

  109. temple. And asking for alms, I mean,

  110. he was asking for money, he was a beggar.

  111. Now, just pause here for a second.

  112. This is a very important

  113. and very contemporary

  114. little image, this picture that we're getting.

  115. In the original language,

  116. it actually says something

  117. very poetic.

  118. Like, I don't know actually why they don't

  119. just translate it more poetic.

  120. And it says at the beginning

  121. that he was lame from birth.

  122. It actually says,

  123. lame from his mother's womb.

  124. Which is actually quite beautiful.

  125. Lame from his mother's womb.

  126. And the other thing about this story

  127. is that in many ways,

  128. this is a story that couldn't happen

  129. in very many places

  130. other than Jerusalem.

  131. And that's because

  132. the custom of the ancient world

  133. was that if they had seen a baby

  134. come out of the womb

  135. and be born,

  136. and there's obviously something

  137. massively deformed

  138. about his ankle and his feet.

  139. And they would look at it

  140. and they would know

  141. that there's just something

  142. massively deformed

  143. about his feet and his ankle.

  144. He's never going to be able to walk.

  145. In the pagan world,

  146. they would have taken that baby

  147. and they would have taken him

  148. to a wilderness area

  149. and left him there to die.

  150. But what we call our Old Testament

  151. and our Jewish friends

  152. call it the Tanakh

  153. forbids that.

  154. And so the Jewish parents

  155. would have kept the baby

  156. and loved the baby.

  157. And of course,

  158. it would have been

  159. a great strain on them.

  160. He would not be able to work.

  161. So he goes to his regular place

  162. to beg.

  163. For those of us

  164. who are downtown a fair bit

  165. and have regular patterns,

  166. one of the things

  167. you'll often notice

  168. is that there's regulars.

  169. Like, you know,

  170. like you go to that certain spot

  171. and you know that

  172. there's going to be

  173. the same one or two

  174. or three different people

  175. who beg at that corner

  176. all the time.

  177. They're regulars.

  178. I make it a point

  179. of trying to befriend

  180. the regulars,

  181. at least give them

  182. the dignity of treating them

  183. like a human being.

  184. And occasionally

  185. buying them coffee

  186. or maybe a piece of pizza

  187. or something like that.

  188. But so this fellow,

  189. who's nameless,

  190. has been not ever able

  191. to walk

  192. and he's a regular

  193. at the temple.

  194. It's going to become

  195. more and more clear.

  196. And by the way,

  197. we're going to discover

  198. in the second half

  199. of the story

  200. in chapter four

  201. that he's over 40.

  202. So he's been lame

  203. for a long time.

  204. He's over 40.

  205. So verse three,

  206. what happens?

  207. So Peter and John

  208. about to go

  209. into the temple,

  210. sorry,

  211. seeing Peter and John

  212. about to go

  213. into the temple,

  214. the beggar

  215. asked to receive

  216. some money.

  217. And Peter directed

  218. his gaze at the man

  219. as did John

  220. and he said,

  221. look at us.

  222. Now this guy,

  223. he's probably all

  224. getting hopeful.

  225. Like maybe this is going

  226. to be like a lot of money.

  227. Look at us.

  228. And so the beggar

  229. fixed his attention

  230. on them,

  231. verse five,

  232. expecting to receive

  233. something from them.

  234. But Peter said,

  235. I have no silver and gold.

  236. And his heart would have,

  237. oh,

  238. I have no silver or gold.

  239. I'm not going to get

  240. a lot of money.

  241. But Peter continues,

  242. but what I do have,

  243. I give to you.

  244. In the name of Jesus Christ

  245. of Nazareth,

  246. rise up and walk.

  247. And Peter takes the man

  248. by the right hand

  249. and starts to help him up.

  250. And immediately

  251. the man's feet

  252. and ankles

  253. were made strong.

  254. And leaping up,

  255. he stood

  256. and began to walk

  257. and entered the temple

  258. with them,

  259. walking and leaping

  260. and praising God.

  261. Now,

  262. actually,

  263. we'll keep going

  264. for the next few verses.

  265. And all the people

  266. saw him walking

  267. and praising God

  268. and recognized him

  269. as the one who sat

  270. at the beautiful gate

  271. of the temple

  272. asking for alms.

  273. And they were all filled

  274. with wonder and amazement

  275. at what had happened

  276. to the man.

  277. Now,

  278. it's not a surprise

  279. that many people,

  280. not only in our modern world,

  281. but especially over the last

  282. 150 or 180 years,

  283. one of the reasons

  284. they would say

  285. that what I'm reading

  286. isn't an ancient eyewitness history

  287. is they would say

  288. it can't be an ancient eyewitness history

  289. because we know

  290. that things like this

  291. don't happen,

  292. that science and medicine

  293. have proven

  294. that things like this

  295. don't happen.

  296. And so,

  297. therefore,

  298. what you're seeing

  299. is a little bit of like

  300. Aesop's fables

  301. or stories about

  302. the great pumpkin

  303. or Santa Claus

  304. or the Easter bunny.

  305. It's some type of a metaphor

  306. or a nice story

  307. to try to inspire

  308. some types of thoughts

  309. amongst you.

  310. Now,

  311. I just want to

  312. mention it very briefly

  313. and I'm going to probably,

  314. you've heard me talk about this

  315. more in some of my earlier sermons

  316. and I'll probably come back to it

  317. in a later sermon,

  318. but just a couple of things

  319. about this.

  320. The first thing is

  321. everything about this book

  322. shows that they're trying,

  323. that they believe

  324. they're writing history.

  325. There's nothing in it,

  326. there's nothing

  327. in the original language,

  328. everything about it,

  329. all of the historical tie-ins

  330. that you'll see.

  331. Like,

  332. as we go through

  333. the book of Acts,

  334. scholars will be able to say,

  335. we know that this happened

  336. in the year 49,

  337. we know that this happened

  338. in the year 51

  339. because the book

  340. has so many constant references

  341. to things known

  342. in the ancient world

  343. and so it's,

  344. and there's been other studies

  345. to show that even things

  346. like the titles

  347. that they get

  348. for the Roman officials

  349. and the use of names,

  350. that everything about it

  351. points that this was

  352. an historical book written,

  353. they're claiming

  354. that this actually happened.

  355. I mean,

  356. that's the bottom line.

  357. They're not claiming

  358. that this is metaphor

  359. or poetry

  360. or just a fable.

  361. They're claiming

  362. this actually all really happened.

  363. And the second thing is,

  364. and this is where

  365. I don't have time

  366. to go into it,

  367. but in fact,

  368. science and medicine

  369. by its very nature

  370. can't disprove

  371. that this happened.

  372. Science can say

  373. that there's no science,

  374. they can't come up

  375. with a scientific reason

  376. for it happening,

  377. but as it's going

  378. to be very obvious,

  379. Peter's not claiming

  380. that there's a scientific

  381. reason for it happening.

  382. He's claiming

  383. it's a miracle.

  384. And science,

  385. by its very nature,

  386. can never disprove

  387. miracles.

  388. In fact,

  389. the only thing

  390. that science and medicine

  391. can do

  392. is increase the wow.

  393. So now,

  394. you know,

  395. probably the only thing

  396. they could see

  397. because of the clothes

  398. he would have been wearing

  399. is his ankles

  400. and his feet.

  401. But the wow is

  402. that we now know

  403. that if you'd lifted him up,

  404. that you would have seen

  405. from his buttocks down

  406. that he had next to no muscle

  407. and we would know

  408. that because he's never

  409. been able to walk,

  410. he had next to no bone density

  411. and his tendons

  412. and his ligaments

  413. would have been

  414. basically atrophied

  415. and he would have

  416. no muscle memory

  417. or knowledge

  418. about how to walk.

  419. So we would look at that

  420. and say,

  421. that's a wow.

  422. Like,

  423. God didn't just sort of

  424. fix his ankles

  425. and his feet.

  426. He built muscle

  427. and tendon

  428. and ligament

  429. and bone

  430. and muscle memory

  431. and all of that

  432. so that he could go

  433. from doing this.

  434. Like,

  435. that just increases

  436. the wow.

  437. I'm not saying

  438. it proves that

  439. the miracle happened,

  440. but I'm just saying

  441. that's what the very claim

  442. of the book is

  443. that it happened.

  444. And by the way,

  445. all of this

  446. is very downstream.

  447. One of the reasons

  448. I believe in miracles

  449. is because I believe

  450. the historical evidence

  451. is very good

  452. that Jesus really

  453. rose from the dead.

  454. And if Jesus really

  455. rose from the dead,

  456. then there's miracles.

  457. Like,

  458. that's not impossible

  459. to believe

  460. that God would do miracles.

  461. And then the third thing

  462. is that actually

  463. what the skeptic

  464. doesn't understand

  465. is on one level

  466. he is correct.

  467. There is a profound

  468. metaphor here

  469. that's going to be

  470. developed throughout

  471. the epistles

  472. and throughout

  473. the book of Acts.

  474. And the profound metaphor

  475. is that one of the ways

  476. to understand

  477. what salvation is,

  478. when Jesus saves you,

  479. when he makes you

  480. right with God,

  481. one of the ways

  482. to understand that

  483. is this shows you

  484. that it's a healing.

  485. Salvation is to be

  486. healed by God.

  487. He heals

  488. your relationship

  489. with himself.

  490. Part of the reason,

  491. not part of the reason,

  492. the reason we die

  493. is that because our soul

  494. has been in rebellion

  495. against God,

  496. then our soul,

  497. in a sense,

  498. is not properly

  499. attached to our body

  500. and our body

  501. withers and then dies

  502. and our soul

  503. and our bodies

  504. go their separate ways

  505. and the body dies.

  506. And so what salvation is

  507. is a profound healing

  508. of who you are,

  509. a healing that goes on

  510. into eternity.

  511. So there is, in fact,

  512. a very profound metaphor there,

  513. but there's no metaphor

  514. unless it happened.

  515. I can't say to you,

  516. give your life to Christ

  517. and you will begin

  518. to experience

  519. a profound healing

  520. that goes into

  521. all of eternity

  522. if Jesus didn't actually

  523. rise from the dead

  524. and if miracles

  525. like this don't happen,

  526. then there's no metaphor

  527. whatsoever.

  528. There's just foolishness.

  529. But you might say,

  530. well, okay, George,

  531. that's all very,

  532. very interesting,

  533. but I don't see anything

  534. about this which is

  535. anti-Semitic.

  536. Well, that comes next

  537. because what's going

  538. to happen next

  539. is Peter explains

  540. what's just happened

  541. and its significance.

  542. So let's look at

  543. how he explains it.

  544. It begins at verse 11.

  545. Well, the man clung

  546. to Peter and John

  547. and all the people

  548. utterly astounded

  549. ran together to them

  550. in the portico

  551. called Solomon's

  552. and when Peter saw it,

  553. he sees it,

  554. there's a crowd,

  555. he addressed the people.

  556. Now, note what he does.

  557. The very first thing

  558. he does is very important

  559. and it fits with as well

  560. that there's a claim

  561. of a miracle.

  562. He says,

  563. Men of Israel,

  564. why do you wonder at this

  565. or why do you stare at us

  566. as though by our own power

  567. or piety

  568. we have made him walk?

  569. So very clearly,

  570. right up front,

  571. he says,

  572. listen,

  573. it has nothing to do

  574. with how holy we are,

  575. it has nothing to do

  576. with anything we've done.

  577. We haven't discussed,

  578. it's not like they've gone

  579. back in a time machine,

  580. you know,

  581. from up in the future

  582. and they have some ray

  583. that can heal.

  584. No, no,

  585. it has nothing to do with us.

  586. That's the very first thing

  587. they claim.

  588. Well, what does?

  589. Well, here's how he begins

  590. to explain

  591. the meaning

  592. and the significance

  593. of what's just happened.

  594. Verse 13,

  595. the God of Abraham,

  596. the God of Isaac,

  597. and the God of Jacob,

  598. the God of our fathers,

  599. glorified his servant,

  600. Jesus,

  601. uh-oh,

  602. whom you

  603. delivered over

  604. and denied

  605. in the presence

  606. of Pilate

  607. when Pilate

  608. had decided

  609. to release him.

  610. But you

  611. denied

  612. the holy

  613. and righteous one

  614. and asked

  615. for a murder

  616. to be granted

  617. to you

  618. and you

  619. killed

  620. the author

  621. of life

  622. whom God

  623. raised

  624. from the dead.

  625. To this

  626. we are

  627. witnesses.

  628. And your Jewish

  629. friend

  630. stiffens.

  631. The cry

  632. of people

  633. claiming to be

  634. Christians

  635. who wanted

  636. to murder Jews

  637. throughout the centuries

  638. is said,

  639. you killed

  640. Jesus.

  641. You killed

  642. Jesus.

  643. Jesus.

  644. And maybe

  645. if your Jewish

  646. friend is with you

  647. this morning

  648. and they're

  649. shocked

  650. at what I just

  651. read

  652. and they'd be

  653. even more shocked

  654. and said,

  655. good grief,

  656. they get it

  657. from the Bible.

  658. Like they can't

  659. just say this is

  660. some other type

  661. of cultural thing

  662. that's come up

  663. or some later

  664. church teaching.

  665. Like they get it

  666. right from the Bible.

  667. It's written in the Bible.

  668. You killed.

  669. You killed

  670. Jesus.

  671. From the river

  672. to the sea

  673. Palestine

  674. will be free.

  675. You killed

  676. Jesus.

  677. Now

  678. let's

  679. also be clear

  680. it's actually

  681. very hard

  682. for us

  683. in our

  684. cultural moment

  685. to understand

  686. what's going on

  687. in the text.

  688. There's

  689. a significant

  690. part of what's

  691. going on

  692. in our culture

  693. right now

  694. that in fact

  695. would make it

  696. obvious

  697. that the right

  698. way to read

  699. this text

  700. is that when

  701. I spoke to

  702. the elderly woman

  703. this week

  704. who is Jewish

  705. that rather

  706. than comforting

  707. her

  708. and telling

  709. her of my

  710. support

  711. and my willingness

  712. to help her

  713. in any way

  714. I could

  715. there's

  716. a basic

  717. way of

  718. understanding

  719. moral world

  720. and relations

  721. between peoples

  722. today

  723. which would

  724. say that

  725. in fact

  726. the obvious

  727. thing

  728. for me

  729. to say

  730. to her

  731. is not

  732. I'll help

  733. you and

  734. support

  735. you

  736. but you

  737. killed

  738. Jesus

  739. what do

  740. I mean

  741. see one

  742. of the

  743. things

  744. is in

  745. this

  746. the way

  747. it's been

  748. used by

  749. anti-Semites

  750. throughout the

  751. years

  752. is that

  753. literally

  754. when I

  755. meet that

  756. elderly

  757. Jewish

  758. woman

  759. or I

  760. meet

  761. another

  762. one of

  763. my

  764. Jewish

  765. friends

  766. that

  767. it really

  768. is as if

  769. they killed

  770. Jesus

  771. I mean

  772. even though

  773. they've

  774. lived

  775. 2,000

  776. years

  777. after

  778. there's

  779. no possible

  780. way

  781. they could

  782. be

  783. responsible

  784. for

  785. killing

  786. Jesus

  787. but

  788. they're

  789. Jewish

  790. and

  791. that's

  792. part of

  793. what it

  794. means to

  795. be

  796. Jewish

  797. that

  798. they

  799. have

  800. that

  801. stain

  802. upon

  803. them

  804. that

  805. can

  806. never

  807. in a

  808. sense

  809. be

  810. removed

  811. you

  812. you see

  813. we live

  814. in a

  815. cultural

  816. moment

  817. and whether

  818. it's

  819. the

  820. bureaucracy

  821. the

  822. courts

  823. public

  824. schools

  825. universities

  826. the

  827. media

  828. we live

  829. in an

  830. age

  831. which

  832. increasingly

  833. thinks

  834. in terms

  835. of

  836. group

  837. responsibilities

  838. some

  839. of

  840. you

  841. here

  842. have

  843. immigrated

  844. to

  845. the

  846. country

  847. in

  848. the

  849. last

  850. very

  851. short

  852. period

  853. of

  854. time

  855. but

  856. if

  857. you

  858. are

  859. white

  860. it's

  861. as

  862. if

  863. you

  864. are

  865. responsible

  866. for

  867. what

  868. happened

  869. to

  870. the

  871. native

  872. people

  873. 200

  874. years

  875. ago

  876. and it

  877. goes on

  878. with other

  879. people

  880. groups

  881. that's

  882. the way

  883. we're

  884. taught

  885. to

  886. think

  887. that's

  888. the way

  889. we're

  890. taught

  891. to

  892. understand

  893. moral

  894. issues

  895. it's

  896. directly

  897. analogous

  898. to

  899. anti-Semitism

  900. I mean

  901. the

  902. motivation

  903. behind it

  904. is to

  905. seek

  906. justice

  907. and all

  908. of that

  909. and I'm

  910. not denying

  911. that there's

  912. often very

  913. good

  914. motivations

  915. for thinking

  916. in those

  917. categories

  918. but

  919. increasingly

  920. in our

  921. culture

  922. that's

  923. how we're

  924. taught

  925. to

  926. think

  927. and so

  928. if

  929. you've

  930. been

  931. taught

  932. to

  933. think

  934. in terms

  935. of

  936. racial

  937. categories

  938. and

  939. other

  940. types

  941. of

  942. categories

  943. whether

  944. it be

  945. categories

  946. connected

  947. to

  948. gender

  949. or

  950. sexuality

  951. or

  952. religion

  953. or

  954. ableism

  955. or

  956. anything

  957. like

  958. that

  959. if

  960. you're

  961. taught

  962. to

  963. think

  964. in

  965. categories

  966. and

  967. you

  968. see

  969. a

  970. thing

  971. like

  972. that

  973. then

  974. all

  975. of a

  976. sudden

  977. it

  978. makes

  979. sense

  980. that

  981. that's

  982. how

  983. Christians

  984. would

  985. maybe

  986. understand

  987. the

  988. issue

  989. and

  990. it

  991. gets

  992. all

  993. complicated

  994. because

  995. the

  996. whole

  997. thing

  998. ends

  999. up

  1000. getting

  1001. very

  1002. complicated

  1003. with

  1004. who's

  1005. up

  1006. and

  1007. who's

  1008. down

  1009. and

  1010. how

  1011. you

  1012. parse

  1013. it

  1014. and

  1015. how

  1016. you

  1017. manage

  1018. it

  1019. but

  1020. in

  1021. some

  1022. ways

  1023. increasingly

  1024. in our

  1025. culture

  1026. it makes

  1027. it the

  1028. natural

  1029. way

  1030. to

  1031. read

  1032. this

  1033. text

  1034. part

  1035. of the

  1036. problem

  1037. with

  1038. this

  1039. way

  1040. of

  1041. thinking

  1042. is

  1043. that

  1044. there's

  1045. no

  1046. hope

  1047. there's

  1048. no

  1049. hope

  1050. the

  1051. more

  1052. we

  1053. think

  1054. in

  1055. categories

  1056. so

  1057. that

  1058. it

  1059. would

  1060. be

  1061. just

  1062. as

  1063. if

  1064. I

  1065. was

  1066. to

  1067. say

  1068. to

  1069. every

  1070. English

  1071. person

  1072. that

  1073. I

  1074. met

  1075. that

  1076. you're

  1077. directly

  1078. responsible

  1079. for

  1080. the

  1081. killing

  1082. of

  1083. my

  1084. ancestors

  1085. in

  1086. Ireland

  1087. during

  1088. the

  1089. potato

  1090. famine

  1091. if

  1092. an

  1093. Australian

  1094. we

  1095. have

  1096. an

  1097. Australian

  1098. in

  1099. our

  1100. congregation

  1101. he

  1102. was

  1103. to

  1104. meet

  1105. an

  1106. English

  1107. person

  1108. he

  1109. could

  1110. say

  1111. you're

  1112. directly

  1113. responsible

  1114. for

  1115. sending

  1116. my

  1117. forebearers

  1118. to

  1119. Australia

  1120. well

  1121. there's

  1122. nowhere

  1123. to go

  1124. with

  1125. that

  1126. there's

  1127. only

  1128. unending

  1129. recrimination

  1130. and guilt

  1131. and this

  1132. is not

  1133. what the

  1134. Bible

  1135. is saying

  1136. here

  1137. by the

  1138. way

  1139. actually

  1140. what you

  1141. see

  1142. here

  1143. is the

  1144. ground

  1145. work

  1146. and the

  1147. framework

  1148. for

  1149. moral

  1150. clarity

  1151. and

  1152. hope

  1153. profound

  1154. hope

  1155. when I

  1156. said

  1157. earlier

  1158. that

  1159. anybody

  1160. who

  1161. is

  1162. anti-Semitic

  1163. is

  1164. ignorant

  1165. of the

  1166. Bible

  1167. you'll

  1168. see in

  1169. a moment

  1170. why

  1171. because

  1172. if they

  1173. were just

  1174. to read

  1175. not only

  1176. the mere

  1177. fact that

  1178. this is

  1179. explaining

  1180. the

  1181. healing

  1182. should

  1183. make

  1184. them

  1185. wonder

  1186. whether

  1187. this

  1188. is in

  1189. fact

  1190. the

  1191. right

  1192. way

  1193. to

  1194. read

  1195. the

  1196. text

  1197. and

  1198. the

  1199. next

  1200. few

  1201. verses

  1202. will

  1203. definitely

  1204. bring

  1205. it

  1206. in

  1207. but

  1208. here's

  1209. the

  1210. thing

  1211. about

  1212. the

  1213. text

  1214. what

  1215. Peter

  1216. is

  1217. doing

  1218. here

  1219. is

  1220. actually

  1221. a

  1222. moment

  1223. of

  1224. very

  1225. courageous

  1226. moral

  1227. clarity

  1228. the

  1229. part

  1230. which

  1231. we're

  1232. going to

  1233. look at

  1234. next

  1235. week

  1236. is

  1237. that

  1238. after

  1239. this

  1240. speech

  1241. Peter

  1242. is

  1243. arrested

  1244. for

  1245. what

  1246. he

  1247. says

  1248. he's

  1249. arrested

  1250. for

  1251. what

  1252. he

  1253. says

  1254. because

  1255. and

  1256. what

  1257. if you

  1258. go back

  1259. and you

  1260. read

  1261. the rest

  1262. of the

  1263. book

  1264. of

  1265. Acts

  1266. and

  1267. if

  1268. you

  1269. read

  1270. the

  1271. other

  1272. epistles

  1273. all

  1274. of

  1275. which

  1276. take

  1277. place

  1278. after

  1279. the

  1280. book

  1281. of

  1282. Acts

  1283. what

  1284. you'll

  1285. see

  1286. is

  1287. they

  1288. never

  1289. say

  1290. this

  1291. again

  1292. why

  1293. do

  1294. they

  1295. never

  1296. say

  1297. it

  1298. again

  1299. because

  1300. the

  1301. Bible

  1302. teaches

  1303. that

  1304. you

  1305. are

  1306. responsible

  1307. for

  1308. your

  1309. own

  1310. moral

  1311. actions

  1312. there's

  1313. some

  1314. nuances

  1315. here

  1316. obviously

  1317. which

  1318. if I

  1319. was

  1320. doing

  1321. a

  1322. sermon

  1323. just

  1324. on

  1325. that

  1326. I

  1327. would

  1328. talk

  1329. a

  1330. little

  1331. bit

  1332. about

  1333. some

  1334. of

  1335. the

  1336. nuances

  1337. but

  1338. fundamentally

  1339. the

  1340. Bible

  1341. has

  1342. the

  1343. message

  1344. that

  1345. Josiah

  1346. is

  1347. responsible

  1348. for

  1349. Josiah's

  1350. sins

  1351. he

  1352. is

  1353. great

  1354. grandfathers

  1355. Josiah

  1356. is

  1357. responsible

  1358. for

  1359. his

  1360. own

  1361. sin

  1362. George

  1363. is

  1364. responsible

  1365. for

  1366. his

  1367. own

  1368. sin

  1369. Diane

  1370. is

  1371. responsible

  1372. for

  1373. her

  1374. own

  1375. sin

  1376. and

  1377. she

  1378. is

  1379. not

  1380. responsible

  1381. for

  1382. the

  1383. sins

  1384. of

  1385. her

  1386. forebears

  1387. she's

  1388. just

  1389. not

  1390. responsible

  1391. for

  1392. them

  1393. that's

  1394. the

  1395. biblical

  1396. message

  1397. and so

  1398. Peter

  1399. says

  1400. this

  1401. why

  1402. does

  1403. Peter

  1404. say

  1405. this

  1406. because

  1407. he's

  1408. literally

  1409. standing

  1410. in front

  1411. of

  1412. people

  1413. who

  1414. actually

  1415. did

  1416. do

  1417. this

  1418. and

  1419. that

  1420. takes

  1421. great

  1422. courage

  1423. you're

  1424. a tiny

  1425. little

  1426. we all

  1427. know

  1428. how much

  1429. courage

  1430. it takes

  1431. if you're

  1432. you know

  1433. you go

  1434. to you

  1435. know

  1436. those

  1437. you go

  1438. to workplace

  1439. things

  1440. to express

  1441. views

  1442. and all

  1443. that type

  1444. of thing

  1445. and share

  1446. and you

  1447. know

  1448. that if

  1449. you're

  1450. the one

  1451. person

  1452. who disagrees

  1453. with everybody

  1454. in the room

  1455. you can't

  1456. say what

  1457. you actually

  1458. think

  1459. it takes

  1460. a very

  1461. weird

  1462. type of

  1463. person

  1464. who can

  1465. do

  1466. that

  1467. somebody

  1468. who's

  1469. sort of

  1470. socially

  1471. awkward

  1472. who can

  1473. actually be

  1474. the one

  1475. person

  1476. in the room

  1477. to say

  1478. against what

  1479. everybody

  1480. else

  1481. is saying

  1482. you know

  1483. God

  1484. love them

  1485. you know

  1486. God

  1487. raises up

  1488. socially

  1489. awkward

  1490. people

  1491. I used

  1492. to have

  1493. a guy

  1494. in the

  1495. congregation

  1496. and if

  1497. he's

  1498. listening

  1499. to this

  1500. this is

  1501. a positive

  1502. thing

  1503. about it

  1504. he was

  1505. that guy

  1506. who could

  1507. go to

  1508. a secular

  1509. university

  1510. and speak

  1511. to like

  1512. a thousand

  1513. people

  1514. 950

  1515. of them

  1516. all let's

  1517. say

  1518. completely

  1519. and utterly

  1520. in favor

  1521. of these

  1522. you know

  1523. of abortion

  1524. and all

  1525. of that

  1526. type of

  1527. thing

  1528. and he

  1529. would be

  1530. the guy

  1531. who'd

  1532. stand up

  1533. and tell

  1534. them

  1535. they're

  1536. all

  1537. wrong

  1538. he's

  1539. that type

  1540. of odd

  1541. guy

  1542. now by

  1543. the way

  1544. he's an

  1545. odd

  1546. guy

  1547. I discovered

  1548. like you

  1549. don't want

  1550. him on

  1551. your

  1552. committee

  1553. why

  1554. because

  1555. he just

  1556. he doesn't

  1557. pick up

  1558. social cues

  1559. but he

  1560. was used

  1561. powerfully

  1562. by God

  1563. right

  1564. so this

  1565. is Peter

  1566. says that

  1567. to them

  1568. but you

  1569. go on

  1570. and you

  1571. read the

  1572. rest of

  1573. the book

  1574. of Acts

  1575. and when

  1576. Peter's

  1577. talking to

  1578. Jewish

  1579. people

  1580. in you

  1581. know

  1582. Berea

  1583. or

  1584. Thessalonica

  1585. or Corinth

  1586. he doesn't

  1587. say you

  1588. killed the

  1589. Jews

  1590. because they

  1591. didn't

  1592. he doesn't

  1593. say that

  1594. to them

  1595. you go

  1596. back in

  1597. the epistles

  1598. and they

  1599. talk about

  1600. Jerusalem

  1601. they don't

  1602. say you

  1603. killed

  1604. no they

  1605. don't

  1606. because they

  1607. didn't

  1608. do it

  1609. and so

  1610. you see

  1611. here

  1612. that

  1613. in fact

  1614. you begin

  1615. to see

  1616. how beautiful

  1617. this text

  1618. is and

  1619. how much

  1620. our culture

  1621. needs it

  1622. because we

  1623. need moral

  1624. clarity

  1625. as human

  1626. beings

  1627. we fundamentally

  1628. need moral

  1629. clarity

  1630. and if you

  1631. think in

  1632. group categories

  1633. you will

  1634. never come

  1635. to moral

  1636. clarity

  1637. you will

  1638. only be

  1639. lost in

  1640. a fog

  1641. of moral

  1642. confusion

  1643. and so

  1644. here

  1645. first of

  1646. all we

  1647. see that

  1648. Peter has

  1649. moral clarity

  1650. has great

  1651. courage

  1652. he says

  1653. this to

  1654. them

  1655. but the

  1656. next parts

  1657. are even

  1658. more important

  1659. because here's

  1660. the thing

  1661. you can

  1662. never have

  1663. moral clarity

  1664. without hope

  1665. there can

  1666. be no

  1667. moral clarity

  1668. without hope

  1669. without hope

  1670. of forgiveness

  1671. of reconciliation

  1672. if you don't

  1673. have that

  1674. hope

  1675. you're never

  1676. going to

  1677. have moral

  1678. clarity

  1679. you just

  1680. have

  1681. defending

  1682. your position

  1683. and pushing

  1684. back

  1685. oh yeah

  1686. you say

  1687. I did

  1688. that

  1689. well you

  1690. did this

  1691. that's

  1692. what happens

  1693. it doesn't

  1694. create any

  1695. type of

  1696. peace

  1697. without hope

  1698. and that's

  1699. what the

  1700. rest of

  1701. the text

  1702. shows so

  1703. beautifully

  1704. begin with

  1705. verse 16

  1706. and his

  1707. name

  1708. by faith

  1709. in his

  1710. name

  1711. has made

  1712. this man

  1713. strong

  1714. whom you

  1715. see and

  1716. know

  1717. and the

  1718. faith

  1719. that is

  1720. through

  1721. Jesus

  1722. has given

  1723. this man

  1724. the perfect

  1725. health

  1726. in the

  1727. presence

  1728. of you

  1729. all

  1730. and as I

  1731. said

  1732. in a sense

  1733. health

  1734. as we'll

  1735. see

  1736. if you go

  1737. back and read

  1738. the epistles

  1739. and if you go

  1740. back and read

  1741. the gospels

  1742. health is often

  1743. an image that

  1744. Jesus uses

  1745. of salvation

  1746. but here's

  1747. where the hope

  1748. comes in

  1749. verse 17

  1750. and following

  1751. and now

  1752. brothers

  1753. I know

  1754. that you

  1755. acted in

  1756. ignorance

  1757. as did

  1758. also your

  1759. rulers

  1760. now just

  1761. pause

  1762. the Bible

  1763. here is

  1764. making a

  1765. biblical

  1766. distinction

  1767. it does

  1768. acknowledge

  1769. that sometimes

  1770. you are

  1771. ignorant of

  1772. a wrong

  1773. thing you've

  1774. done

  1775. and in a

  1776. sense it

  1777. lessens the

  1778. punishment

  1779. but it

  1780. never erases

  1781. responsibility

  1782. it never

  1783. erases

  1784. responsibility

  1785. so he

  1786. acknowledges

  1787. that they

  1788. obviously

  1789. didn't

  1790. literally

  1791. think

  1792. I mean

  1793. when they

  1794. call him

  1795. the holy

  1796. and righteous

  1797. one

  1798. those are

  1799. means

  1800. they're saying

  1801. he's

  1802. God

  1803. author of

  1804. life

  1805. that's

  1806. God

  1807. right

  1808. and then

  1809. verse 18

  1810. we see

  1811. this here

  1812. but what

  1813. God foretold

  1814. by the mouth

  1815. of all the

  1816. prophets

  1817. that as

  1818. Christ would

  1819. suffer

  1820. he thus

  1821. fulfilled

  1822. he's partially

  1823. saying you

  1824. should have

  1825. actually been

  1826. aware of

  1827. this

  1828. because it's

  1829. so clearly

  1830. seen in

  1831. the scriptures

  1832. but here's

  1833. the hope

  1834. repent

  1835. just pause

  1836. here for a

  1837. second

  1838. before we

  1839. go any

  1840. further

  1841. see in

  1842. our day

  1843. and age

  1844. we'd say

  1845. you've

  1846. done that

  1847. you're

  1848. responsible

  1849. for it

  1850. that guilt

  1851. is with

  1852. you forever

  1853. you will

  1854. always be

  1855. tarnished

  1856. and stained

  1857. by it

  1858. it will

  1859. always be

  1860. with you

  1861. and if

  1862. I'm the

  1863. person on

  1864. the other

  1865. end of

  1866. that

  1867. because of

  1868. my sexuality

  1869. or my

  1870. age

  1871. or my

  1872. ethnicity

  1873. like what

  1874. can I do

  1875. with that

  1876. and if

  1877. Peter

  1878. are going

  1879. to say

  1880. repent

  1881. you just

  1882. need to

  1883. spend the

  1884. rest of

  1885. your life

  1886. feeling terrible

  1887. about what's

  1888. happened

  1889. and accepting

  1890. responsibility

  1891. for it

  1892. and making

  1893. reparations

  1894. about it

  1895. and accepting

  1896. when you get

  1897. punished for the

  1898. wrong things

  1899. that were done

  1900. by your

  1901. forebears

  1902. and that's

  1903. how the

  1904. modern world

  1905. speaks

  1906. but listen

  1907. again

  1908. what he

  1909. says here

  1910. in verse

  1911. 19

  1912. repent

  1913. and turn

  1914. back

  1915. that your

  1916. sins

  1917. may be

  1918. blotted

  1919. out

  1920. in the

  1921. ancient world

  1922. the ink

  1923. that they

  1924. used

  1925. had no

  1926. acid in

  1927. it

  1928. so it

  1929. just

  1930. rested

  1931. on the

  1932. top

  1933. of

  1934. what they

  1935. were

  1936. writing

  1937. on

  1938. and it

  1939. meant

  1940. that if

  1941. you wanted

  1942. to erase

  1943. it

  1944. you just

  1945. needed a

  1946. damp

  1947. cloth

  1948. and it

  1949. would

  1950. completely

  1951. remove

  1952. what was

  1953. written

  1954. and that

  1955. that's

  1956. the image

  1957. all of the

  1958. things

  1959. all the

  1960. accusations

  1961. against you

  1962. all of the

  1963. things that

  1964. you've done

  1965. wrong

  1966. the true

  1967. ones

  1968. repent

  1969. verse 19

  1970. and turn

  1971. back that

  1972. your sins

  1973. may be

  1974. blotted

  1975. out

  1976. and further

  1977. the times

  1978. of refreshing

  1979. may come

  1980. from the

  1981. presence of

  1982. the Lord

  1983. and then

  1984. thirdly

  1985. that he

  1986. may send

  1987. the Christ

  1988. appointed

  1989. for you

  1990. Jesus

  1991. whom heaven

  1992. must receive

  1993. until the

  1994. time for

  1995. restoring

  1996. all things

  1997. about which

  1998. God spoke

  1999. by the mouth

  2000. of his

  2001. holy prophets

  2002. long ago

  2003. these are

  2004. the people

  2005. who killed

  2006. Jesus

  2007. and Peter

  2008. has been

  2009. taught by

  2010. Jesus

  2011. and Peter

  2012. knows something

  2013. about the

  2014. need for

  2015. forgiveness

  2016. because Peter

  2017. knows that

  2018. he denied

  2019. Jesus too

  2020. and that he

  2021. really should

  2022. have known

  2023. better because

  2024. Jesus even

  2025. warned him

  2026. he was going

  2027. to do this

  2028. and Peter

  2029. in his

  2030. pride denied

  2031. that he

  2032. was going

  2033. to deny

  2034. Jesus

  2035. but Peter

  2036. denied

  2037. Jesus

  2038. he knows

  2039. something

  2040. about what

  2041. is needed

  2042. and he

  2043. knows that

  2044. in shame

  2045. and embarrassment

  2046. and in lacking

  2047. of courage

  2048. he hid

  2049. while Jesus

  2050. was being

  2051. crucified

  2052. he went

  2053. and hid

  2054. when Jesus

  2055. was being

  2056. crucified

  2057. he was not

  2058. brave

  2059. there is

  2060. nothing

  2061. noble

  2062. about him

  2063. he knows

  2064. how desperately

  2065. he needs

  2066. forgiveness

  2067. and he's

  2068. speaking to

  2069. the people

  2070. who actually

  2071. have killed

  2072. Jesus

  2073. and he's

  2074. been taught

  2075. by Jesus

  2076. and he says

  2077. you know

  2078. what Jesus

  2079. heart is

  2080. for you

  2081. like why

  2082. did Jesus

  2083. die

  2084. not that

  2085. you will

  2086. feel crappy

  2087. and guilty

  2088. for the rest

  2089. of your life

  2090. and feel as if

  2091. there is a

  2092. stain and a

  2093. shame on you

  2094. that you can

  2095. never get away

  2096. from

  2097. that you will

  2098. suffer for

  2099. for the rest

  2100. of your life

  2101. and no matter

  2102. what you'd

  2103. suffer

  2104. you deserve

  2105. to suffer

  2106. that

  2107. no he says

  2108. repent

  2109. the things

  2110. you've done

  2111. wrong will

  2112. be completely

  2113. and utterly

  2114. removed

  2115. from your

  2116. record

  2117. God will

  2118. send refreshment

  2119. to you

  2120. reference to

  2121. the Holy Spirit

  2122. what a wonderful

  2123. way to understand

  2124. the coming of

  2125. the Holy Spirit

  2126. a refreshment

  2127. that comes to

  2128. you

  2129. and then

  2130. Jesus himself

  2131. will come

  2132. to you

  2133. he will be

  2134. with you

  2135. he is

  2136. for you

  2137. you will

  2138. be in him

  2139. he will

  2140. be in you

  2141. he will

  2142. walk

  2143. with you

  2144. now I

  2145. have hope

  2146. now I

  2147. have hope

  2148. when I

  2149. have hope

  2150. I can begin

  2151. to have

  2152. moral clarity

  2153. I mean

  2154. moral clarity

  2155. is always

  2156. hard

  2157. because we're

  2158. selfish

  2159. selfish

  2160. and have

  2161. envy

  2162. and all

  2163. that stuff

  2164. and I'm

  2165. not denying

  2166. it

  2167. we can

  2168. begin

  2169. to have

  2170. hope

  2171. we can

  2172. look at

  2173. our lives

  2174. and we

  2175. can accept

  2176. the wrong

  2177. that we've

  2178. done

  2179. and maybe

  2180. look at

  2181. the wrong

  2182. we've

  2183. done

  2184. and ask

  2185. God to

  2186. give us

  2187. wisdom

  2188. about the

  2189. wrong

  2190. we've

  2191. done

  2192. and

  2193. there's

  2194. hope

  2195. there's

  2196. hope

  2197. to look

  2198. there's

  2199. hope

  2200. to grow

  2201. there's

  2202. hope

  2203. to forgive

  2204. there's

  2205. hope

  2206. to maybe

  2207. be

  2208. reconciled

  2209. there's

  2210. hope

  2211. that even

  2212. if we're

  2213. not

  2214. reconciled

  2215. that we

  2216. know that

  2217. God has

  2218. forgiven us

  2219. and that we

  2220. can move

  2221. forward

  2222. with life

  2223. it's going

  2224. to tell you

  2225. a little bit

  2226. later on

  2227. that another

  2228. 2,000 people

  2229. become Christians

  2230. because you

  2231. see one of

  2232. the deepest

  2233. needs that

  2234. a human

  2235. being has

  2236. is to

  2237. know that

  2238. they've

  2239. been forgiven

  2240. by their

  2241. creator

  2242. the true

  2243. and living

  2244. God

  2245. and forgiveness

  2246. is a type

  2247. of deep

  2248. healing

  2249. forgiveness

  2250. is a type

  2251. of deep

  2252. healing

  2253. nobody

  2254. could read

  2255. this text

  2256. and think

  2257. it justifies

  2258. hurting any

  2259. Jewish person

  2260. that we

  2261. know

  2262. invite you

  2263. to stand

  2264. I know

  2265. that

  2266. Owen's

  2267. going to

  2268. get up

  2269. and he's

  2270. going to

  2271. lead us

  2272. in some

  2273. intercessions

  2274. I want

  2275. to do

  2276. two prayers

  2277. for us

  2278. at this

  2279. time

  2280. last week

  2281. I prayed

  2282. about the

  2283. terrible

  2284. situation

  2285. in Israel

  2286. in many

  2287. ways

  2288. in every

  2289. way

  2290. it's only

  2291. gotten

  2292. worse

  2293. we've

  2294. seen

  2295. more

  2296. and more

  2297. people

  2298. in our

  2299. streets

  2300. of our

  2301. cities

  2302. and our

  2303. country

  2304. urging

  2305. the death

  2306. of our

  2307. Jewish

  2308. neighbors

  2309. and the

  2310. nation

  2311. of Israel

  2312. and I

  2313. prayed

  2314. about it

  2315. and I

  2316. prayed

  2317. alright

  2318. but it's

  2319. hard to

  2320. pray

  2321. without

  2322. sounding

  2323. like you

  2324. have moral

  2325. compromise

  2326. or both

  2327. side

  2328. and so

  2329. I wrote

  2330. a prayer

  2331. because I

  2332. wanted to

  2333. try to get

  2334. it as

  2335. close to

  2336. right as

  2337. I could

  2338. and I'm

  2339. not saying

  2340. this is

  2341. perfect

  2342. it's not

  2343. the scripture

  2344. but I'm

  2345. going to

  2346. pray first

  2347. about the

  2348. situation

  2349. that's going

  2350. on in our

  2351. culture

  2352. and then I'm

  2353. going to

  2354. pray for us

  2355. in light of

  2356. this sermon

  2357. and by the

  2358. way

  2359. if you

  2360. can ask

  2361. me how

  2362. you can

  2363. let me

  2364. know

  2365. it would be

  2366. very funny

  2367. if I said

  2368. give me some

  2369. feedback and

  2370. I got really

  2371. defensive after

  2372. the sermon

  2373. I just

  2374. talked about

  2375. how knowing

  2376. you're repentant

  2377. allows you to

  2378. move towards

  2379. moral clarity

  2380. I would be

  2381. very hypocritical

  2382. of me

  2383. but let me

  2384. know how

  2385. it is

  2386. and I

  2387. might have

  2388. it as part

  2389. of our

  2390. prayers of

  2391. the people

  2392. over the

  2393. coming weeks

  2394. so I'm

  2395. going to

  2396. pray this

  2397. prayer first

  2398. and then I'll

  2399. pray more

  2400. directly in

  2401. light of the

  2402. sermon

  2403. let us pray

  2404. almighty

  2405. god

  2406. we pray

  2407. for the

  2408. defeat

  2409. and the

  2410. end

  2411. of

  2412. hamas

  2413. please

  2414. comfort

  2415. and protect

  2416. our

  2417. jewish

  2418. neighbors

  2419. grant

  2420. our

  2421. political

  2422. leaders

  2423. moral

  2424. clarity

  2425. and

  2426. courage

  2427. please

  2428. bring to

  2429. repentance

  2430. all in

  2431. our

  2432. community

  2433. who are

  2434. calling for

  2435. the end

  2436. of israel

  2437. and the

  2438. death

  2439. of jewish

  2440. people

  2441. we pray

  2442. for great

  2443. unity

  2444. and boldness

  2445. for your

  2446. church

  2447. in israel

  2448. especially

  2449. for

  2450. palestinian

  2451. and jewish

  2452. christians

  2453. and we

  2454. ask this

  2455. in jesus

  2456. name

  2457. amen

  2458. father

  2459. um

  2460. we

  2461. we are

  2462. so grateful

  2463. for your

  2464. word

  2465. for its

  2466. wisdom

  2467. and its

  2468. power

  2469. and we

  2470. are so

  2471. grateful

  2472. father

  2473. for jesus

  2474. that when

  2475. he looks

  2476. at us

  2477. when you

  2478. looked at

  2479. us

  2480. you didn't

  2481. weigh our

  2482. merits

  2483. you pardon

  2484. our

  2485. offenses

  2486. we give

  2487. you thanks

  2488. and praise

  2489. that when

  2490. we accept

  2491. christ as

  2492. savior and

  2493. lord

  2494. that this

  2495. is the

  2496. the first

  2497. step of

  2498. a great

  2499. and eternal

  2500. healing

  2501. that that

  2502. jesus brings

  2503. to us

  2504. that our

  2505. sins are

  2506. washed away

  2507. that the

  2508. holy spirit

  2509. comes to

  2510. us to

  2511. refresh us

  2512. and that

  2513. christ

  2514. himself

  2515. will walk

  2516. with us

  2517. we ask

  2518. lord

  2519. that you

  2520. help the

  2521. gospel to

  2522. become more

  2523. and more

  2524. real to

  2525. our hearts

  2526. that we

  2527. might know

  2528. that we

  2529. are forgiven

  2530. and that

  2531. your forgiveness

  2532. is completely

  2533. and utterly

  2534. rock solid

  2535. assured

  2536. so that we

  2537. might have

  2538. the courage

  2539. to look at

  2540. the things

  2541. in our own

  2542. life that we

  2543. have done

  2544. that are wrong

  2545. the things

  2546. that we should

  2547. have done

  2548. that we

  2549. didn't

  2550. the things

  2551. that we

  2552. did do

  2553. that we

  2554. shouldn't

  2555. have

  2556. that you

  2557. would grant

  2558. us father

  2559. security

  2560. in christ

  2561. to look at

  2562. it honestly

  2563. that we might

  2564. amend our

  2565. lives

  2566. that we might

  2567. make amendment

  2568. where we have

  2569. to make

  2570. amendment

  2571. where we might

  2572. apologize

  2573. where we have

  2574. to apologize

  2575. that we might

  2576. call out for

  2577. you to live

  2578. in a way

  2579. which honors

  2580. people and

  2581. brings glory

  2582. to you and

  2583. is good for

  2584. us and we

  2585. ask these

  2586. things in the

  2587. name of

  2588. jesus your

  2589. son and our

  2590. savior amen

  2591. but ask them

  2592. for

  2593. this

  2594. we

  2595. that we

  2596. are

  2597. uh

  2598. we

  2599. how

  2600. can

  2601. help
