  1. Let's read together the Lord's Prayer from Matthew's Gospel.

  2. So that's found in Matthew chapter 6, verses 9 to 13.

    Matthew 6:9–13

  3. And Jesus teaches us to pray like this.

  4. He says,

  5. Pray then like this.

  6. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  7. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

  8. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts,

  9. as we also have forgiven our debtors.

  10. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  11. This is God's holy word.

  12. And it's good to see so many of you here tonight.

  13. I'm really excited.

  14. Keep your Bibles open on the Lord's Prayer.

  15. Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  16. We are going through the Lord's Prayer still,

  17. which is almost like a little series in another series.

  18. You know, we're still in the Sermon on the Mount,

  19. but Jesus is now teaching the people the Lord's Prayer.

  20. Lewis was last week preaching on the beginning of the Lord's Prayer,

  21. our Father in heaven,

  22. and the comfort we find in that, that we are praying to our Father.

  23. And this time we're looking at the next verse,

  24. which is about the kingdom of God.

  25. Martin Lloyd-Jones, the famous Welsh preacher in the city of London

  26. in the 20th century,

  27. he writes this about the Lord's Prayer.

  28. Any man who attempts to preach on the Lord's Prayer

  29. must surely find himself in great difficulties.

  30. There is a sense in which it's almost presumptuous to preach on it at all.

  31. One should simply repeat these phrases and meditate upon them

  32. and consider them from the heart.

  33. For they themselves say everything.

  34. And the more I study this prayer,

  35. the more I believe that if only one used these phrases

  36. as our Lord intended them to be used,

  37. there is really nothing more to be said.

  38. But on the other hand, he says,

  39. we're all frail and fallible.

  40. We're all sinful creatures.

  41. And the result is that we need to have these things analyzed and enforced.

  42. So we'll try to do that a little bit today.

  43. We try to analyze and then enforce,

  44. apply to our hearts the words of the Lord's Prayer.

  45. But Martin Lloyd-Jones is giving us the application,

  46. the application in this series, right?

  47. It's a prayer.

  48. We have to pray the Lord's Prayer.

  49. It's something we can preach from,

  50. but if you don't pray it,

  51. then it doesn't really have any value.

  52. Verse 10, the kingdom of God.

  53. It's a fairly short verse.

  54. Your kingdom come,

  55. your will be done,

  56. on earth as it is on heaven.

  57. This verse talks about the kingdom of God.

  58. And the kingdom of God, I have to tell you,

  59. is one of the biggest themes that we find in all of Scripture.

  60. During the summer,

  61. we had a sermon series called Kingdom Parables.

  62. So today I will try a little bit

  63. to explain what the kingdom of God is.

  64. But if you still want more explanation,

  65. you can go back on Spotify or on YouTube

  66. and listen to this sermon series on the kingdom,

  67. on parables about the kingdom.

  68. Because Jesus gives us pictures

  69. to explain what the kingdom of God is like

  70. because it is not all that easy to say it in words.

  71. My sermon today is two parts, okay?

  72. We will try to figure out what the kingdom of God is,

  73. and then we will try to figure out

  74. why we should pray for the kingdom.

  75. So let's start with the first.

  76. What is the kingdom of God?

  77. Sometimes it is helpful to look at words

  78. and where they come from

  79. because our English words and the biblical words,

  80. they are not always the same principles.

  81. So the word kingdom,

  82. we all know the word kingdom

  83. because if someone asks you,

  84. where do you live?

  85. You say, I live in Scotland

  86. or I live in the United Kingdom.

  87. So we associate the word kingdom with a place.

  88. A kingdom is a place where a king rules.

  89. In the biblical languages, however,

  90. the word kingdom refers not only to a place,

  91. but it also refers to an action.

  92. The word kingdom stuck with us

  93. from the King James Version

  94. and before that from William Tyndale's

  95. translations of the Bible.

  96. But in the biblical languages,

  97. it refers more to the activity of a king

  98. reigning over his people.

  99. So we could say it means,

  100. the kingdom of God means,

  101. it is, or the kingdom of God is

  102. where God's will is done,

  103. where God reigns.

  104. And that is why right after

  105. the first sentence in our verse,

  106. your kingdom come,

  107. we read, your will be done.

  108. It is two sides of the same coin.

  109. The kingdom of God is

  110. where God's will is done.

  111. And you see,

  112. the world had become a place

  113. where God's will hadn't been done.

  114. It wasn't enforced.

  115. Therefore,

  116. Jesus is now announcing

  117. that God's reign has come.

  118. However,

  119. kingdom,

  120. this word kingdom,

  121. still assumes a place

  122. because if you say,

  123. okay,

  124. God's will is done,

  125. God is sovereign,

  126. God is ruling,

  127. then it still assumes

  128. that he's ruling over people

  129. somewhere,

  130. right?

  131. But if we look at the second part

  132. of this word kingdom,

  133. dem,

  134. you know,

  135. the,

  136. what do you say,

  137. suffix,

  138. prefix,

  139. I don't know.

  140. It's like boredom,

  141. you know,

  142. it's a state,

  143. it's a condition,

  144. the condition of being bored.

  145. Now,

  146. kingdom is the condition

  147. of being kinged,

  148. of being ruled,

  149. of being reigned over.

  150. It's quite simple,

  151. the definition,

  152. admittedly,

  153. but maybe it's helpful

  154. to think about it like that.

  155. The second thing I want to say

  156. is that the kingdom

  157. is the gospel.

  158. And what I mean by that

  159. is that in the Bible,

  160. we always talk about

  161. the gospel

  162. as the key message.

  163. But one scholar says

  164. that the kingdom of God

  165. is the idea

  166. that stitches

  167. the whole Bible together.

  168. And that's really helpful

  169. because it's true.

  170. From the first page

  171. in the Bible,

  172. Genesis 1,

  173. to the last page

  174. in the Bible,

  175. in the book of Revelations,

  176. we find this idea

  177. of the kingdom of God.

  178. From the garden

  179. to the city,

  180. from Eden

  181. to New Jerusalem.

  182. And Jesus himself

  183. mentions the kingdom

  184. 80 times,

  185. I think,

  186. in the gospels.

  187. Which makes you think,

  188. okay,

  189. I thought the gospels,

  190. you know,

  191. the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  192. he lived,

  193. he died,

  194. he was raised again.

  195. That is the main message.

  196. So why do I say

  197. the kingdom of God

  198. is the main message?

  199. Because it's one,

  200. it's the same thing.

  201. Even Jesus himself says,

  202. he uses the phrase,

  203. the gospel of the kingdom

  204. of God.

  205. If you were here

  206. last Sunday morning,

  207. maybe you heard

  208. Corey preach

  209. on the question,

  210. what is the gospel?

  211. And he said something like,

  212. the gospel is good news.

  213. It's an announcement.

  214. It's like a newspaper article

  215. announcing something,

  216. giving you news.

  217. The gospel is news

  218. of the return of the king.

  219. That finally,

  220. in the midst of chaos,

  221. there will be order.

  222. In the midst of violence,

  223. there will be peace.

  224. And in the midst of darkness,

  225. there will be light.

  226. The good news,

  227. the gospel is,

  228. that the kingdom of God

  229. has arrived.

  230. Through the king,

  231. who comes in the middle of history

  232. to put things right again.

  233. The kingdom is the gospel.

  234. The whole Bible

  235. is about God's kingdom.

  236. Thirdly,

  237. kingdom means dominion.

  238. Dominion is not a word

  239. we use often.

  240. in our day-to-day colloquial language.

  241. But it's throughout

  242. the whole Bible.

  243. Again,

  244. it starts on the first page.

  245. Genesis 1,

    Genesis 1:26

  246. verse 26.

  247. We read about this word,

  248. dominion.

  249. Interestingly,

  250. it's not about

  251. God having dominion,

  252. but it's about God

  253. giving us dominion.

  254. So what we learn

  255. in that passage

  256. is actually

  257. that God

  258. wanted us

  259. to rule.

  260. So we read,

  261. God said,

  262. let us make man

  263. in our image

  264. after our likeness

  265. and let them have dominion

  266. over the fish

  267. over the sea

  268. and over the birds

  269. of the heavens

  270. and over the livestock

  271. and over all the earth

  272. and over every creeping thing

  273. that creeps on the earth.

  274. So,

  275. we see that

  276. we have this dominion

  277. language

  278. right from the beginning

  279. of the Bible

  280. in the garden,

  281. not for God himself

  282. having dominion

  283. over us,

  284. but actually

  285. for us

  286. to rule

  287. over creation,

  288. intended in a very good way

  289. with responsibilities.

  290. Why?

  291. Because we are

  292. image bearers

  293. of God.

  294. We get this

  295. royal task

  296. of ruling,

  297. of subduing

  298. the creation

  299. and caring for it.

  300. We are all

  301. cultivators.

  302. We bring order

  303. into chaos.

  304. We are all

  305. gardeners in a way.

  306. We cultivate,

  307. we develop,

  308. we are supposed

  309. to reign over creation.

  310. We were given

  311. dominion.

  312. Now,

  313. Richard Dawkins,

  314. the popular

  315. atheist,

  316. in his book

  317. The God Delusion,

  318. he says

  319. a lot of things

  320. about God,

  321. but one of the things

  322. he says is that

  323. God is an unforgiving

  324. control freak.

  325. But in Genesis 1,

  326. we see

  327. God giving

  328. dominion over nature

  329. and over animals

  330. to human beings.

  331. God makes

  332. Adam and Eve

  333. co-rulers

  334. over his kingdom.

  335. He gives them

  336. the ability

  337. to choose

  338. between right

  339. and wrong.

  340. So,

  341. is that a control freak?

  342. Is that what

  343. a control freak does?

  344. I don't think so.

  345. The problem is not

  346. that God is

  347. a control freak.

  348. The problem is

  349. that we as human

  350. beings,

  351. we want to set up

  352. our own kingdom.

  353. We didn't want

  354. to share with God.

  355. We wanted to be

  356. God ourselves.

  357. So,

  358. we had to leave

  359. the kingdom

  360. to set up

  361. our own kingdom.

  362. And now,

  363. the other part

  364. of Dawkins'

  365. claim,

  366. he says,

  367. God is unforgiving.

  368. That is not true.

  369. The rest of the Bible,

  370. after the first

  371. three chapters,

  372. is the story

  373. about how God

  374. is trying to save us

  375. from ourselves,

  376. from our own kingdom

  377. that has gone wrong

  378. again,

  379. and again,

  380. and again,

  381. culminating in

  382. Jesus Christ,

  383. the Son of God,

  384. becoming human himself,

  385. leaving his glory,

  386. writing himself

  387. into history,

  388. and dying

  389. for our sin,

  390. dying for our rebellion,

  391. dying for the fact

  392. that we weren't satisfied

  393. with ruling

  394. alongside God.

  395. God wants to say,

  396. come back to the kingdom.

  397. Now,

  398. the problem is

  399. we can't do that.

  400. We have left

  401. the kingdom.

  402. We are sinful.

  403. Sin is not permitting

  404. us to come back

  405. to him.

  406. So what did he do?

  407. He sent his own son.

  408. He sent Jesus Christ.

  409. And what did Jesus do?

  410. He took all the sin

  411. on himself.

  412. He became

  413. the sin

  414. that was keeping us

  415. from entering

  416. the kingdom of God

  417. so that we might enter.

  418. He became

  419. the outsider.

  420. He became

  421. the outcast.

  422. He left the city

  423. so that we

  424. might enter

  425. the kingdom

  426. of God.

  427. That is,

  428. today is Palm Sunday.

  429. A lot of churches

  430. are celebrating

  431. Palm Sunday.

  432. What do we do?

  433. What do we read about

  434. in the Bible

  435. on Palm Sunday?

  436. Jesus entering

  437. Jerusalem.

  438. He's received

  439. like a king.

  440. And a few days later,

  441. he's crucified

  442. with a crown

  443. of thorns.

  444. Outside of the city,

  445. he is left

  446. at becoming the sin

  447. so that we

  448. might enter it.

  449. fourthly,

  450. the kingdom

  451. is already

  452. but not yet.

  453. Maybe you've

  454. heard this before

  455. if you've been

  456. to church

  457. for a while.

  458. If you grew up

  459. in church,

  460. you've heard people

  461. talking about the

  462. already but not

  463. yet.

  464. It's weird,

  465. isn't it,

  466. that we read

  467. in the Gospels

  468. that Jesus says

  469. the kingdom of God

  470. is at hand.

  471. It has arrived,

  472. but in the Lord's prayer,

  473. he tells us

  474. to pray for it.

  475. How can that be?

  476. And honestly,

  477. that can be confusing,

  478. but it just shows you

  479. how the kingdom of God

  480. is a very complex idea,

  481. that it's multi-layered,

  482. that there are

  483. many aspects to it,

  484. and one of those

  485. aspects is time.

  486. Because,

  487. as I said,

  488. we read that the kingdom

  489. of God is here,

  490. but also that there

  491. is so much more

  492. to come.

  493. Theologians,

  494. therefore,

  495. speak about the kingdom

  496. of God having

  497. been inaugurated

  498. already.

  499. It's been established.

  500. It is here,

  501. through Jesus Christ.

  502. However,

  503. it is not yet

  504. fully realized,

  505. not yet fully consummated.

  506. So,

  507. we live in the present,

  508. knowing that we can be

  509. part of this kingdom

  510. if we repent

  511. and believe,

  512. and also,

  513. that there is something

  514. more to come.

  515. A reality

  516. in which Christ

  517. will sit

  518. on the throne,

  519. ruling

  520. over new creation.

  521. Some people have

  522. compared it to

  523. D-Day and

  524. V-Day.

  525. So,

  526. in the Second World War,

  527. you had D-Day,

  528. which is when

  529. the Allies said,

  530. we will free Europe,

  531. and they've sent

  532. their soldiers,

  533. and they landed

  534. on the beaches

  535. in France.

  536. And then,

  537. one year later,

  538. you had V-Day,

  539. when the actual

  540. victory was

  541. accomplished.

  542. It was already

  543. decided the war

  544. was going to end,

  545. but the actual

  546. victory came

  547. a year later.

  548. So,

  549. it's a bit like that.

  550. We live in the

  551. here and now.

  552. We're cleansed

  553. from our sin.

  554. We're able to

  555. choose the right

  556. thing,

  557. yet we still

  558. live in a fallen

  559. world,

  560. and the battle

  561. is still going

  562. on around us,

  563. so we still

  564. fall into sin.

  565. We live in the

  566. understanding that

  567. we have eternal

  568. life in Jesus Christ,

  569. yet we are still

  570. surrounded by death.

  571. We know that one

  572. day all tears

  573. will be wiped

  574. away,

  575. yet we mourn,

  576. and we grieve,

  577. and we shed tears

  578. as this life brings

  579. us suffering and

  580. troubles.

  581. Yet we have the

  582. promise that one

  583. day that will all

  584. be done away with.

  585. And that is

  586. unbelievable and

  587. difficult sometimes

  588. to fully realize,

  589. to wrap our

  590. heads around.

  591. It seems too

  592. good to be true

  593. almost, even so

  594. good that a lot

  595. of people have

  596. struggled to see

  597. it.

  598. Friedrich Nietzsche,

  599. I'm not the only

  600. one who quotes

  601. German thinkers

  602. from this pulpit.

  603. We've heard a lot

  604. of Nietzsche and

  605. other people

  606. lately.

  607. Nietzsche says

  608. this,

  609. the kingdom of

  610. heaven is a

  611. condition of the

  612. heart.

  613. Is that correct?

  614. Would we agree?

  615. I think to a

  616. degree, yes.

  617. The kingdom of

  618. heaven is a

  619. condition of the

  620. heart.

  621. If God rules in

  622. your heart,

  623. that's a good

  624. thing.

  625. Then the kingdom

  626. of heaven is

  627. within you.

  628. And here he goes

  629. wrong, because

  630. what he says next

  631. is, it is not

  632. something that

  633. comes above the

  634. earth or after

  635. death.

  636. And that's where

  637. Nietzsche is

  638. wrong, because it

  639. will be.

  640. It is promised.

  641. God has promised

  642. that we will one

  643. day see him face

  644. to face.

  645. It's the already

  646. but not yet.

  647. Karl Marx says,

  648. religion is the

  649. sigh of the

  650. oppressed creature,

  651. the heart of a

  652. heartless world.

  653. It's the opium of

  654. the people.

  655. Karl Marx said,

  656. it's the opium of

  657. the people.

  658. Why?

  659. Because he sees

  660. that religion, it

  661. helps people.

  662. Somehow it gives

  663. them strength to

  664. keep on in this

  665. cruel world.

  666. For him, of course,

  667. it's just a

  668. distraction of his

  669. cause of social

  670. liberation.

  671. But what he fails

  672. to see is that

  673. actually it's not

  674. just opium.

  675. It's the medicine

  676. that gives you

  677. healing.

  678. It's a true hope.

  679. It is something so

  680. much bigger than

  681. just a nice idea.

  682. It is real.

  683. Secondly, why

  684. should we pray for

  685. the kingdom to

  686. come?

  687. I've tried to

  688. come up with a

  689. list of ideas

  690. and reasons why

  691. we should pray for

  692. the kingdom of

  693. God to come.

  694. And the first

  695. reason is this,

  696. because Jesus

  697. tells us so.

  698. Jesus tells us to

  699. pray for it because

  700. it is for our

  701. good, ultimately.

  702. That's the first

  703. reason.

  704. Second reason,

  705. Sinclair Ferguson,

  706. the great Scottish

  707. theologian, he

  708. says,

  709. out of love for

  710. him and our

  711. concern for his

  712. glory, we pray

  713. that his kingdom

  714. will come out of

  715. love for God and

  716. out of our own

  717. concern for his

  718. glory.

  719. As I said, we

  720. already live in the

  721. kingdom, yet its

  722. final flowing is

  723. still awaited.

  724. We therefore pray

  725. that the kingdom

  726. that has already

  727. been established

  728. will express its

  729. presence more and

  730. more throughout the

  731. earth, he writes,

  732. until the day

  733. comes when the

  734. kingdom of the

  735. world has become

  736. the kingdom of

  737. our Lord and of

  738. his Christ, and he

  739. will reign forever

  740. and ever.

  741. It's about God's

  742. glory, about God's

  743. glory.

  744. Thirdly, we should

  745. pray for the

  746. kingdom so that the

  747. kingdom grows within

  748. our own hearts and so

  749. that we submit to

  750. God's will.

  751. Praying for the

  752. kingdom will bring

  753. the idea of the

  754. kingdom into our

  755. minds.

  756. It will make us

  757. kingdom-minded

  758. people.

  759. Praying for the

  760. kingdom will make

  761. you see the world

  762. around you with

  763. different eyes,

  764. through a different

  765. lens.

  766. Why?

  767. One of the main

  768. purposes of prayer

  769. is not to ask God

  770. the Father to change

  771. his will, but

  772. actually to submit

  773. to his will.

  774. It's a warming up

  775. to the promises he

  776. has given us.

  777. It's an act of

  778. accepting and

  779. submitting to God,

  780. to the hard things

  781. that we are walking

  782. through, in the

  783. knowledge that in

  784. all things God

  785. works for the good

  786. of those who love

  787. him.

  788. Tim Keller writes

  789. about this.

  790. He says,

  791. Jesus submitted to

  792. the Father's will,

  793. under circumstances

  794. far more crushing

  795. than any of us

  796. will ever face.

  797. Jesus admitted to

  798. his Father's will

  799. rather than

  800. following his own

  801. desires, and it

  802. saved us.

  803. That's why we

  804. can trust him.

  805. Jesus is not

  806. asking us to do

  807. anything for him

  808. that he hasn't

  809. already done for us.

  810. Under conditions

  811. of difficulty,

  812. beyond our

  813. comprehension.

  814. You see, we

  815. can trust Jesus

  816. when he says,

  817. pray for the

  818. kingdom, submit

  819. to his will.

  820. Without this

  821. trust, what

  822. happens?

  823. We will try to

  824. take God's

  825. place, and we

  826. will pray, my

  827. kingdom come, my

  828. will be done, on

  829. earth as it is in

  830. my imagination.

  831. You know?

  832. But if you see,

  833. if we pray for the

  834. kingdom to come, we

  835. are aware that if

  836. God would have

  837. given us what we

  838. deserved, then none

  839. of us would be part

  840. of his kingdom.

  841. We submit to his

  842. will.

  843. And actually, we

  844. want to love his

  845. will.

  846. Submission is not

  847. going far enough.

  848. I know some of

  849. you here submit to

  850. his will and do

  851. his will.

  852. We all try to do

  853. that as a Christian

  854. family together, but

  855. not all of us love

  856. his will.

  857. And that's

  858. difficult.

  859. It's difficult to

  860. love God's will.

  861. But that is the

  862. idea of this

  863. prayer, to warm up

  864. to that.

  865. Your will be

  866. done.

  867. Jesus praying in

  868. the garden, kneeling

  869. down.

  870. If you can, let

  871. this cup pass.

  872. But if not, then

  873. your will be

  874. done.

  875. Your will be

  876. done.

  877. Why else?

  878. Why should we pray

  879. for the kingdom

  880. of God?

  881. As an encouragement

  882. for us, it reminds

  883. us of our identity

  884. in Christ, that we

  885. are adopted, that we

  886. are accepted, and

  887. that we are loved.

  888. It helps our

  889. assurance.

  890. It frees us from

  891. our doubts.

  892. If we pray this

  893. prayer and preach

  894. to ourself that the

  895. kingdom will come,

  896. that God's will be

  897. done on earth as it

  898. is in heaven.

  899. C.S. Lewis says

  900. that often we are

  901. satisfied with playing

  902. in mud puddles because

  903. we can't imagine what

  904. a holiday at the beach

  905. would look like.

  906. Sometimes this idea

  907. of heaven to come,

  908. the kingdom of God

  909. seems too good to be

  910. true.

  911. But if we pray for the

  912. kingdom to come, we

  913. remind ourselves and

  914. we preach to ourselves

  915. the reality of God's

  916. will to come even

  917. more and even better

  918. than what it is now.

  919. In Lord of the Rings,

  920. in the third book or

  921. third movie, depending

  922. on whether you read

  923. or watch it, I mean

  924. all of us have read or

  925. watched it, I hope,

  926. we get this illustration.

  927. We get Aragorn and he

  928. is the king of Gondor

  929. and the book is giving

  930. us him as an illustration

  931. of what a just king

  932. looks like, a humble

  933. king, a kind king,

  934. powerful, wise, worthy.

  935. And all of that is just

  936. a mere glimpse of what

  937. the true king Jesus is

  938. like.

  939. Now the difference

  940. between Aragorn and

  941. Jesus is this.

  942. Aragorn is fictional.

  943. Jesus Christ isn't.

  944. Jesus Christ is the

  945. king who will return

  946. and then the world

  947. will see and know.

  948. And when we pray for

  949. the kingdom to come,

  950. we are praying for

  951. God's upside down

  952. kingdom to come.

  953. Remember, the kingdom

  954. is good news.

  955. It's the gospel.

  956. I say upside down

  957. kingdom because in

  958. God's kingdom, the

  959. king is the servant.

  960. In God's kingdom,

  961. tears are wiped away.

  962. In God's kingdom,

  963. the judge becomes the

  964. one who is judged.

  965. The sad will be happy.

  966. The desperate will be

  967. joyful.

  968. Anger will become

  969. kindness.

  970. Sin will be done

  971. away with.

  972. Selfishness will not

  973. exist and love will

  974. rule.

  975. And it's already here.

  976. The prince of peace

  977. will sit on his throne

  978. of mercy and he will

  979. wipe away our tears.

  980. We should pray for the

  981. kingdom of God, for our

  982. own sanctification as

  983. well.

  984. We are promised in the

  985. Bible that we will be

  986. co-heirs with Christ.

  987. We are, if we believe,

  988. if we repent and believe

  989. in Jesus Christ, we are

  990. his brothers, which means

  991. we are adopted.

  992. We are part of God's

  993. family.

  994. We are sons and

  995. daughters of the king.

  996. When I was a child, my

  997. mom used to read stories

  998. to me before I go to bed.

  999. And this is one story.

1000. And I tried to translate

  1001. the title.

  1002. It's a bit wooden.

  1003. But it's something like

  1004. Not Like With Robbers.

  1005. Okay.

1006. Now, it is a story about

  1007. two children, Tom and

  1008. Jenny.

  1009. And they live with

  1010. robbers in a den.

  1011. And it's dirty there.

  1012. It's not nice.

  1013. The robbers aren't really

  1014. nice to them.

  1015. They're just being brought

  1016. up there.

  1017. They don't really have

  1018. nice clothes.

1019. When there is food, they

1020. just have to get as much

1021. as they can, stuff it in

  1022. their pockets, run into

1023. the corn and eat it there

1024. so nobody steals it away

  1025. from them.

1026. And one day this man comes

1027. and he goes to the robbers

1028. and says, I want these

1029. two children and I want

1030. them to come with me to

  1031. my house.

1032. I will care for them.

1033. And the robbers say, ah,

  1034. they're not good for

  1035. anything.

1036. But yeah, they take his

  1037. money and the children

  1038. go with him.

1039. And the next day they

1040. wake up and they are in

  1041. a palace.

1042. And it turns out the king

1043. came and bought them and

  1044. redeemed them.

  1045. And what happens?

1046. Tom wakes up and he goes

  1047. into the kitchen.

  1048. There's a big table and

  1049. there are other children

  1050. sitting there and eating.

1051. And he runs to the table

1052. and it's full with good

1053. food and he steals the

1054. food and he runs away

1055. into his corner and eats

1056. it, kind of like trying to

  1057. make sure nobody steals

  1058. his food.

  1059. And nobody, nobody's even

  1060. trying to.

1061. The kids, they come over to

1062. him and they say, what are

  1063. you doing?

1064. You can come sit at the

  1065. table with us.

  1066. It's okay.

1067. And all of them are kind

1068. and loving and Tom doesn't

  1069. understand why that is.

1070. But the reason why that is

  1071. is because there's enough

  1072. food.

  1073. There's enough of

  1074. everything.

1075. They live in a palace and

1076. they're the children of the

  1077. king.

1078. And that shows in how they

1079. act and how they behave.

1080. So what I'm saying is that

  1081. we are princes and

  1082. princesses in a way.

1083. We are children of the

  1084. highest king.

  1085. Therefore, the Bible says

1086. we should behave like that

  1087. as well.

1088. God bought us with a

  1089. price.

1090. He clothed us with the

  1091. robe of righteousness.

1092. He sees you and he says,

1093. my son died for you.

  1094. You are adopted.

  1095. It's a huge privilege.

  1096. Praying for the kingdom

1097. should remind us that we

  1098. are co-heirs, co-heirs,

1099. it's hard to say for me,

  1100. co-heirs with Christ.

  1101. We are his children.

  1102. Lastly, we should pray

  1103. because it will be

  1104. heaven on earth.

  1105. It's for our

  1106. consolation.

1107. I know that many of us

  1108. are struggling with

  1109. difficult situations

1110. in life, with the loss

  1111. of loved ones, with

  1112. sickness, with

  1113. suffering that is

  1114. unexpected, with a lot

  1115. of different things.

  1116. Listen to what John

1117. writes in the book of

  1118. Revelation.

  1119. He says,

  1120. then I saw a new

  1121. heaven and a new

  1122. earth.

  1123. For the first heaven

  1124. and the first earth

  1125. had passed away and

  1126. there was no longer

  1127. any sea.

1128. I saw the holy city,

  1129. the new Jerusalem,

  1130. coming down out of

  1131. heaven from God,

  1132. prepared as a bride

  1133. beautifully dressed for

  1134. her husband.

  1135. And I heard a loud

  1136. voice from the throne

  1137. saying, look,

  1138. God's dwelling place

  1139. is now among the

  1140. people and he will

  1141. dwell with them.

  1142. They will be his

  1143. people and God

  1144. himself will be with

  1145. them and be their

  1146. God.

  1147. He will wipe away

  1148. every tear from

  1149. their eyes.

  1150. there will be no

  1151. more death or

  1152. mourning or crying

  1153. or pain for the

  1154. old order of things

  1155. has passed away.

  1156. We should pray for

  1157. the kingdom of God.

  1158. We should look at

  1159. the king on the

  1160. cross with the

  1161. crown of thorns

  1162. on his head,

  1163. becoming the

  1164. outsider, the

  1165. outcast, so that

  1166. we may enter.

  1167. Have you been

  1168. struggling lately to

  1169. pray?

  1170. Have you been

  1171. struggling to think

  1172. about the kingdom

  1173. of God?

  1174. Have you been

  1175. struggling to pray

  1176. for the kingdom

  1177. of God?

  1178. I hope that I'm

1179. able to help you a

  1180. little bit with

  1181. this, to be excited

  1182. for the kingdom of

  1183. God.

  1184. The only reason I

  1185. see not to be

  1186. excited about the

  1187. kingdom of God is

  1188. if you're not sure

  1189. if you're in it,

  1190. if you're not sure

  1191. if you can enter.

  1192. So my question to

  1193. you is tonight,

  1194. would you consider

  1195. what I've just

  1196. talked about?

  1197. Would you consider

  1198. the kingdom of God

  1199. not out of fear,

  1200. not because you

  1201. need some sort of

  1202. opium to distract

  1203. you from your

  1204. pain, but because

  1205. God is actually

  1206. offering you to

  1207. become part of his

  1208. family and part of

  1209. his kingdom?

  1210. Do you feel like

  1211. you're not in the

  1212. kingdom?

  1213. Then listen to the

  1214. king as he says,

1215. come to me all you

  1216. who are weary and

  1217. heavy laden and I

  1218. will give you rest.

  1219. Do you feel bored?

  1220. Do you feel without

  1221. purpose?

  1222. Then look to Jesus

  1223. Christ who offers

  1224. you his hand so

  1225. you can help expand

  1226. his kingdom.

1227. We are to pray for

  1228. the kingdom because

  1229. it's the gospel.

  1230. It's the good news

  1231. that things are

  1232. being made right

  1233. again by the

  1234. servant king who

  1235. in the middle of

  1236. history became a

  1237. human being just

  1238. like us to

  1239. fulfill what we

  1240. as image bearers

  1241. couldn't fulfill.

  1242. And he will reign

  1243. forever and ever.

  1244. We are praying for

  1245. the king to return.

  1246. That's the good

  1247. news today.

  1248. Let us pray.

  1249. Heavenly Father, it's

  1250. like Martin Lloyd

  1251. Jones says that we

  1252. are overwhelmed with

  1253. the truths and the

  1254. depth that we find

  1255. in scripture and

  1256. even in the Lord's

  1257. prayer, even in just

  1258. one verse.

  1259. So we ask, would

  1260. you with your Holy

  1261. Spirit move in our

  1262. hearts?

1263. Would you help us to

  1264. understand what it

1265. means to pray for you?

  1266. the kingdom?

1267. Would you help us to

  1268. become kingdom-minded

  1269. people, to be

  1270. peacemakers and to

  1271. seek justice and to

  1272. love our neighbors

  1273. well, just like

  1274. Jesus did?

1275. Would you help us to

  1276. become more like him

  1277. every day?

  1278. In Jesus' name we

  1279. ask.

  1280. Amen.

  1281. Amen.
