  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the

  11. types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Let's pray. Father, we are in your presence. You have spoken to us through your Word. We ask,

  13. Father, that you would so move in our hearts, that our hearts would be hungry for your Word,

  14. open and receptive to your Word, and that your Word would form us, that your Word would give us life.

  15. And we ask this in Jesus' name, your Son, Father, and our Savior. Amen.

  16. Amen. So this is going to be a big surprise to you, all of you. Thank you very much, John. This is going

  17. to be a very big surprise to you all. But I was in a coffee shop this week, and something happened.

  18. Some of you might wonder if I have a life apart from coffee shops. I don't. I'm exceptionally boring.

  19. I think to myself, if the Canadian government or the Chinese government wants to follow me along

  20. and listen in on me, I'd put them to sleep by how boring my life is, by the standards of the world.

  21. Anyway, so I come into the coffee shop, and there's like a table. I'm sitting down, and then there's

  22. like two other tables quite close. And there's a young woman at both of the other tables. They're

  23. obviously friends. They're chatting away. They're probably... I'm getting really old. They're

  24. probably PhD students. I thought they were undergrads, but who knows how old they're. Young

  25. women, from my point of view. And they're chattering away. And as I'm putting my stuff down, I notice

  26. that there's a bracelet on the... There's a bracelet on the ground. So I say to them,

  27. is this your bracelet? Because if it's not, I take and give it into the cash so that, you

  28. know, whoever had it could get it back. And one of the young women looked and said, oh,

  29. yeah, that's mine. And so I picked it up and give it to her. And she said, oh, thank you.

  30. That's my support Palestinians bracelet in the Hamas war, in the, you know, the liberation of

  31. Palestine. So, you know, I gave it to her. And then we had this short conversation. She was very

  32. bubbly, not angry or aggressive. She was a very bubbly type of personality. And she said to me with

  33. a big smile, you support the Palestinians against the Israelis, don't you? Just like that, with a big

  34. smile. Like, of course, I'm going to say yes. And I said, so here's the thing. Some of you know,

  35. I can be, I can be sinfully opinionated about politics. But I don't want to talk about politics

  36. at a coffee shop. I want to be able to share the gospel with people and not talk about politics.

  37. So I can't remember what I said. I sort of dodged it. But she was persistent. She, I guess,

  38. was an evangelist for the Palestinian cause. So she's very insistent. And then finally, I said

  39. something about how I, you know, I wasn't really in favor of what Hamas. And, you know, I didn't say

  40. Palestinians as I was in favor of Hamas. And then she comes back all with this bubbly, almost flirtatious

  41. type of encouraging me to agree with her. And then she said, well, you surely you don't agree with a

  42. group of people who bomb hospitals. So I sort of, I probably went like this. Like, you really want me

  43. to talk about this? So I said to her, well, they shouldn't hide missiles in hospitals. And they

  44. shouldn't shoot Israelis from hospitals. And they shouldn't store their weapons in the hospitals

  45. and underneath it. And she just looked at me with a big smile. She said this. And this was the part,

  46. the parting word. The Jews are always killing Muslim babies.

  47. The Jews are always killing Muslim babies. Now, I said it to you seriously. She said, the Jews are

  48. always killing Muslim babies. Just like 30 seconds after that, she was talking with her friend about

  49. where to get their nails done and what hairstyle to get with their haircut. It was just like a bubbly,

  50. common sense thing, as if everybody knows that. The same thing that I would say, oh, that's King Edward

  51. over there. She would just say, oh, the Jews are always killing Muslim babies. I don't want anybody

  52. to think that I always know the right thing to say in situations. And I didn't know what to say to that.

  53. Like, I'd never come across such a deeply horrific, anti-Semitic statement. And some of you know,

  54. there's a phrase about the banality of evil. And that was a perfect example. Like, she just,

  55. she was cheerful about making that statement. And I literally did not know what to say.

  56. I've prayed for her off and on, you know, since then. I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to

  57. see her again. I'd never seen her in that particular coffee shop before, but maybe I will.

  58. And maybe next time I come across such a statement, I'll know what to say. Now, I'm saying all of this

  59. because the Bible text that we're looking at today is a story about prejudice causing division

  60. in the early church. And some biblical commentators try to downplay the prejudice, but they shouldn't

  61. downplay the prejudice. There is prejudice, and it becomes noticeable and a source of complaint

  62. in the early church. And so we're going to look at that story. It's not the same type of prejudice

  63. prejudice as that prejudice of the Jews are always killing Muslim babies. But all prejudice

  64. is wrong. And all prejudice has the possibility to grow to murderous extremes and to banal extremes

  65. so that you don't even, you're not even thinking that you should repent of it. So let's look at this

  66. particular story. It's Acts chapter 6, verses 1 to 7. Acts chapter 6, verses 1 to 7. And some of you

    Acts 6:1–7 Acts 6:1–7

  67. are probably thinking, like me, that most of the times they've heard sermons on this, the prejudice

  68. aspect sort of gets effaced or done away with, and they get into whether or not, you know, this is the

  69. institution of deacons and stuff like that. But here's the story, and it begins like this. Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6:1–7

  70. verses 1 to 7. Now, in these days, when the disciples were increasing in number, now just before we go any

  71. further on that, just to explain, I've said that this is an eyewitness-based history of the first 35 years

  72. of the Jesus movement, probably written before the year 67 or 68 AD. And there's two reasons for that. You can

  73. ask me about that over coffee or send me an email, maybe even written in 66 or something like that.

  74. Actually, very simply, there are two reasons it was probably written beforehand, is it ends not with

  75. Paul having been martyred, but just in jail. And he dies, I think, in 67. And the other thing is that

  76. Jerusalem hasn't been destroyed, and that's in 70. So it's almost definitely written before those two

  77. events, Paul's death by execution under Nero, martyred, and before the destruction of Jerusalem.

  78. And so in this phrase, it's not like once upon a time language. In fact, what it is, is in the

  79. original language, it's, you know, there's a God, I think it's a Greek God, Janus. He's a God that looks

  80. both ways at the same time. And it's a very helpful thing. Sometimes there's parts of the Bible that are

  81. Janus texts. They look both ways at the same time. And so it's a linking phrase. It's referring to the

  82. fact back to what's just happened. And this is all within probably a year of the death and

  83. resurrection of Jesus. And it's looking at what just happened, which was the apostles all arrested,

  84. spending the night in jail, rescued by the angel, their witness before the Sanhedrin,

  85. Gamaliel having them spared from execution, but they're still whipped. And they rejoice that they

  86. have this honor to bear witness to Jesus and the church grows. And so that's what they're linking

  87. to this. The church is growing. There's hostility, but the church is growing. So now in these days,

  88. when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the

  89. Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  90. And in the original language, the word neglected is a very good word. It's a very accurate word. They

  91. were being neglected. Now, a couple of things. First of all, Hellenists and Hebrews, there's no really

  92. good way to translate it into English. This is a cultural distinction. And so basically, it's a

  93. distinction between two groups of people who would have been living in Jerusalem in those days.

  94. What they call the Hellenists are people who, the Jewish people, just like today, you know,

  95. there's Jewish people all over the world. Lots of Jewish people in Ottawa, Vancouver, Manhattan,

  96. and there's also some in Israel, of course. So the Hellenists are Jewish people who have been part of

  97. this diaspora, maybe for decades, maybe for generations and generations. And they've lived in the pagan

  98. world, the Greek-speaking, Latin-speaking world. But they've now come back to live in Jerusalem or in

  99. the area. And they have become culturally Greek. That's what they've become. So, you know, if they're

  100. going to have their salad, it's going to be a Greek salad with lots of feta cheese and black olives.

  101. It's, you know, so the food they eat, the jokes they tell, the stories they tell, the things they

  102. remember, they all come out of a Greek culture. What are called the Hebrew, so it doesn't, they all

  103. speak Greek probably, but it doesn't necessarily mean they don't speak Hebrew or Latin or Aramaic.

  104. But they're culturally Greek. The Hebrews are long-time Palestinian Jews. And just one other aside,

  105. we all know that in this culture, for me to talk about Palestinian Jews living in Jerusalem in the

  106. year 34 is a political statement, would be viewed as a political statement, maybe even as something

  107. colonizing, which is ridiculous. For most of this stuff, we have to have belly laughs at it,

  108. because it's ridiculous. C.S. Lewis once said the devil, I think he was quoting Thomas More or

  109. something. The devil hates to be mocked, hates to be laughed at. Maybe that's what we need more of.

  110. But this Hebrew group are people who are mainly long-term Palestinian Jews. Their primary language

  111. would not be Greek, but Aramaic. Now, they might also speak Hebrew and Greek, by the way, but culturally,

  112. they are comfortable, most comfortable that Palestinian Jewish culture. Now, just to show that

  113. it's not specifically talking about language, is, you know, some of you know the Bible very well,

  114. know that later on in another place, Paul writes that he's a Hebrew of Hebrews. And he uses the same

  115. word for Hebrew. But he himself was from the diaspora. He himself grew up not in Jerusalem,

  116. but somewhere else. But culturally, he's a Palestinian Jew, and he refers to himself that way.

  117. So there's this cultural difference, two culturally different communities in the same physical area,

  118. and there's tension between them. And people from both communities become Christians. And now people

  119. from the lesser, in a Jerusalem context, they are the lower ones. Like maybe if they were in Athens,

  120. the Hebrews would be the lower ones. But in Jerusalem, they're the lower ones, the Greek-speaking

  121. Jews. And look what it says again. They arose a complaint by these group against the Hebrews,

  122. the Hebrew Jewish Christians, because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  123. Now, one of the things which must have made this neglect especially hard is the neglect comes in the

  124. context of jaw-dropping generosity and love. Like just jaw-dropping, gobsmacking generosity and love.

  125. If you go back and you read, what they're doing is they're caring for the poorest of the poor.

  126. And how are they caring for them is people with means are selling their property and making huge

  127. financial contributions so that the least of the least can be cared for. That's like jaw-dropping,

  128. jaw-dropping generosity, jaw-dropping love. And in the context of jaw-dropping generosity and love,

  129. there is prejudice still. And the prejudice leads to this one group being neglected.

  130. So what do they do? What are they going to do about it in the rest of the story?

  131. And by the way, in the ancient world, in our Canadian culture, we all think we know what should

  132. be done. And one of the things, and if you haven't read Tom Holland's book, Dominion, or if you haven't

  133. read Glenn Scrivner's book, The Air That We Breathe, everybody should read Glenn Scrivner's book, The Air

  134. That We Breathe, which is shorter and easier than Tom Holland's book, Dominion. But in the ancient world,

  135. the Roman centurion would say, what's the issue? Who cares about widows?

  136. They would say, in fact, the natural order of things is the strong.

  137. Stay strong. We earned it. We deserve it. The gods demand that we be fed.

  138. Who cares about widows? They're just women.

  139. People in Canada who are going to critique this story unwittingly are speaking like Christians

  140. without realizing it. But what are they going to say? Well, let's see what the apostles say.

  141. And it's actually quite shocking to Canadian ears. If we just listen to it, you think about how you

  142. read this with your neighbors. Verse 2, so the 12 and the 12 summoned the full number of the disciples

  143. and said, it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  144. What? What did they just say? There's a complaint about prejudice. There's a complaint about people,

  145. the least of the least, going hungry. And the first thing they want to say is, it is not right

  146. that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables?

  147. Now, let's be honest. All of our Canadian neighbors would say that's the wrong answer.

  148. That's the wrong answer.

  149. Now, in a Canadian culture, we'd be expecting an apology. We'd be expecting resignations.

  150. There's all sorts of things we'd be expecting. Now, just as we're trying to figure out what's

  151. going on here, and by the way, this is the wonderful thing about walking towards difficulties

  152. in the Bible, is that it's when you walk towards difficulties in the Bible, you know, you've heard

  153. me say before, I wish I could find out where I, somebody asked me about it, and I'm not smart

  154. enough to figure this out myself. Like, I read it somewhere. I just can't remember who I read it.

  155. Like, stories like this are both a mirror for us to see ourselves and a window to see God

  156. in the world as it really is. And so, it's when we walk towards difficult passages and

  157. think about them that we start to see ourselves. You see, so part of the problem is that for

  158. Canadians, Canadians generally have a silent mantra that they say to themselves. And the

  159. silent mantra is, I need the Bible like the fish needs a bicycle. I need a Bible like a

  160. fish needs the bicycle. I need Jesus like a fish needs a bicycle. So to say that the most

  161. important thing is to open the Bible is like an eye-rolling comment. And that's partially because

  162. that's how Canadians think. And so that's a bit of a problem. But the second problem with

  163. their comment, and this is now, I'm going to talk about the Bible in a moment, but this

  164. is to make the apostles' words actually seem a little bit more difficult and also more relatable

  165. to why it actually is, at least in appearance, a difficult response. See, one of the things which

  166. is going on here in the text, and it happens with prejudice, it touches on a very deep human fear

  167. and a very deep human longing. And one of the things that we fear is being unseen and unheard.

  168. One of the things which many women say is that when they reach a certain age, they become invisible.

  169. Nobody sees them. Nobody sees them. Nobody sees them. It's hard to talk about, but it sure doesn't feel good.

  170. But interestingly enough, the fear or the complaint of being unseen is genuinely an intergenerational issue.

  171. One of the concerns for teenagers and young people is that they're unseen.

  172. Nobody's seen them when they're thinking about what to do about the job market.

  173. Nobody's seen them when they're thinking about what to do with housing prices and rental things.

  174. Nobody sees them. Nobody hears them.

  175. And then, of course, obviously for lots of other groups, people maybe even right here,

  176. they're very frustrated because at their place of work, it feels as if when they speak, they're unheard.

  177. And that when they're even looking for promotions or for other types of people that contribute,

  178. they're completely and utterly unseen.

  179. In fact, if we were in the right type of context, maybe if you're in the right type of small group

  180. or mentoring group, if this topic came up, it might discover that one of the people in our congregation,

  181. that they're moved to tears about the fact that they feel deeply unseen and unheard

  182. and how deeply wounding it is.

  183. And so their initial response

  184. sounds a lot like

  185. people, men,

  186. who aren't seeing them and aren't hearing them.

  187. But that's not what's going on.

  188. Let's look again at what they say in verse 2 and then read the rest of what they say.

  189. And the 12 summoned all the full number of the disciples and said,

  190. it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  191. Therefore, it's a funny thing there, therefore.

  192. See, what they're doing

  193. is they say

  194. this neglect,

  195. first of all, they're saying that this care

  196. for the least of the least

  197. is very important.

  198. This neglect is very important.

  199. But before we give the response,

  200. you're also forgetting something else

  201. which is very important,

  202. which is the word of God

  203. and prayer.

  204. So now we take

  205. the importance, it is very important

  206. important

  207. to care for the least of the least,

  208. especially amongst the community.

  209. It is very important

  210. that there is no prejudice,

  211. that that neglect is dealt with,

  212. and it's very important

  213. that God's word is preached

  214. and that people pray.

  215. Therefore,

  216. and in verse 3

  217. and following,

  218. we see the therefore.

  219. Therefore, verse 3,

  220. brothers and sisters,

  221. pick out from among you

  222. seven men of good repute,

  223. full of the Holy Spirit

  224. and wisdom,

  225. whom we will appoint

  226. to this duty.

  227. But we will devote ourselves

  228. to prayer

  229. and to the ministry

  230. of the word.

  231. And what they said

  232. pleased the whole gathering,

  233. and they chose Stephen,

  234. a man full of faith

  235. and of the Holy Spirit,

  236. and Philip,

  237. and Prochorus,

  238. and Nicanor,

  239. and Timon,

  240. and Parmenas,

  241. and Nicholas,

  242. a proselyte of Antioch.

  243. These they set

  244. before the apostles,

  245. and they prayed

  246. and laid their hands on them.

  247. Now you'll notice

  248. that they're all Greek names.

  249. This doesn't mean

  250. that they were all

  251. necessarily Hellenists,

  252. but it would be very unlikely

  253. that none of them were.

  254. It was very common

  255. for Palestinian Jews

  256. to also have a Greek name,

  257. just as it's very common

  258. for immigrants

  259. to come to our country

  260. from another country,

  261. and they have their Chinese

  262. or their Malaysian

  263. or their Nigerian name,

  264. which might be hard

  265. for Canadians to pronounce,

  266. so they have their Chinese name

  267. and a Canadian name,

  268. or their Malaysian name

  269. or their Rwandan name,

  270. and they have a Canadian name.

  271. It's a very common thing now,

  272. and it's a very common thing

  273. back then.

  274. But it definitely shows

  275. that they pick people

  276. who obviously have

  277. some degree of sympathy

  278. with this,

  279. and the whole congregation,

  280. both the Hellenists

  281. and the Hebraists,

  282. love the solution,

  283. love the people,

  284. and they go for it.

  285. So what we see here then

  286. is that the apostles added

  287. something which our culture

  288. thinks is not needed.

  289. As I said,

  290. to the average Canadian,

  291. I need the Bible

  292. like a fish needs a bicycle.

  293. I need the gospel

  294. like a fish needs a bicycle.

  295. In fact, you know,

  296. and this deeply affects Christians,

  297. I might be one of the few people

  298. in the room,

  299. because I'm a pastor,

  300. I read books about, you know,

  301. how to be a pastor and all,

  302. and there's a very, very common

  303. saying in evangelical circles

  304. right now which says

  305. that if your church

  306. was to vanish,

  307. would anybody in the community

  308. notice it?

  309. And the implication

  310. of the question is

  311. that it would be a terrible thing

  312. if we vanished,

  313. and nobody noticed it.

  314. And what they mean by that,

  315. then, is that really what it is,

  316. is if the church isn't running

  317. the Boy Scouts

  318. and the food banks

  319. and doing this

  320. and doing that

  321. and hosting the AA things

  322. and all these things

  323. for the community,

  324. if they're not doing that,

  325. then we're unimportant.

  326. Well,

  327. that's actually having the world

  328. determine our agenda.

  329. It's not what the Bible says.

  330. The fact of the matter is

  331. that there's only one group

  332. in all of Canada

  333. that will tell people

  334. that there is a God

  335. who truly does exist

  336. and there is a Savior

  337. who loves them.

  338. It's not the Boy Scouts.

  339. It's not any other group

  340. like that.

  341. It's only the church.

  342. And so that's actually

  343. a fundamentally important thing

  344. for the church to do.

  345. I'm not saying that we shouldn't

  346. do other types of things

  347. to help the poor.

  348. That's not the point.

  349. But it's...

  350. The point is that

  351. there is this fundamental priority

  352. upon the church

  353. to equip Christians

  354. and to proclaim the gospel

  355. so that people

  356. who are lost

  357. can be saved.

  358. That's our fundamental priority.

  359. It's the number one job.

  360. The others are consequences

  361. of receiving the gospel.

  362. And the consequences

  363. aren't the gospel.

  364. The gospel has consequences.

  365. Always does.

  366. But the consequences

  367. aren't the gospel.

  368. What is the gospel?

  369. Well,

  370. the gospel is

  371. that Christ died

  372. for both

  373. Hellenistic Jews

  374. and Hebrew Jews.

  375. Like that very,

  376. very fundamental thing

  377. that we worship

  378. a God

  379. who saw human need

  380. and Jesus died

  381. on the cross

  382. for the Dalit,

  383. the lowest caste

  384. in India.

  385. He died

  386. for the elite

  387. in Nigeria.

  388. He died

  389. for the Politburo

  390. in China.

  391. He died

  392. for Biden

  393. in the White House.

  394. He died

  395. for the slave.

  396. He died

  397. for,

  398. well,

  399. he died

  400. for everybody.

  401. I mean,

  402. not everybody

  403. receives.

  404. But God

  405. doesn't say,

  406. you know,

  407. I think I only

  408. want white people

  409. or I only want

  410. black people.

  411. No,

  412. there's absolutely

  413. no prejudice

  414. in God.

  415. And the other

  416. thing about it

  417. is that the gospel

  418. is this message

  419. that Jesus

  420. sees you.

  421. Like,

  422. he sees you.

  423. Nobody gets you

  424. like God gets you.

  425. He sees you.

  426. And the amazing thing

  427. about the gospel

  428. is he sees you.

  429. He sees

  430. how you have

  431. screwed up

  432. your marriage.

  433. He sees

  434. how you've been

  435. fantastic at your marriage.

  436. He sees how you've

  437. screwed up with this.

  438. He sees

  439. the things that you're,

  440. he sees you

  441. and yet even

  442. seeing you,

  443. you all the way

  444. down for you,

  445. he dies for you.

  446. And

  447. we have to

  448. acknowledge that

  449. being seen

  450. is a complicated

  451. issue.

  452. How is it

  453. complicated?

  454. Being seen

  455. and heard

  456. is a bit more

  457. complicated

  458. because all of us

  459. are involved

  460. in a dance.

  461. I want you

  462. to know me

  463. and see me.

  464. I don't want you

  465. to know

  466. and see the things

  467. that I've done

  468. that are really wrong.

  469. And you don't

  470. want that

  471. with me either.

  472. One of the issues

  473. in marriages

  474. is,

  475. you know,

  476. the desire

  477. that,

  478. you know,

  479. the husband

  480. and the wife

  481. keeping things

  482. from each other.

  483. things that

  484. are embarrassed

  485. about

  486. and ashamed

  487. about.

  488. And so,

  489. you see,

  490. there's,

  491. we think

  492. that what we

  493. want is to

  494. be seen,

  495. but we all

  496. know that

  497. in a different

  498. context,

  499. what we

  500. definitely

  501. don't want

  502. is to have

  503. certain things

  504. about us

  505. be seen.

  506. Listen to,

  507. listen to the

  508. gospel,

  509. how psychologically

  510. insightful

  511. and profound

  512. the gospel

  513. is.

  514. If you could

  515. put up

  516. the text

  517. of John

    John 3 chapter mention

  518. chapter 3,

  519. we're going

  520. to just

  521. slip to

  522. John

    John 3:16

  523. chapter 3

  524. verses 16,

  525. a very famous

  526. verse,

  527. 16 to 21.

  528. And this

  529. is Jesus

  530. speaking.

  531. For God

  532. so loved

  533. the world

  534. that he

  535. gave his

  536. only son

  537. that whoever

  538. believes in

  539. him should

  540. not perish

  541. but have

  542. eternal life.

  543. For God

  544. did not

  545. send his

  546. son into

  547. the world

  548. to condemn

  549. the world,

  550. but in

  551. order that

  552. the world

  553. might be

  554. saved

  555. through

  556. him.

  557. Whoever

  558. believes

  559. in him

  560. is not

  561. condemned,

  562. but whoever

  563. does not

  564. believe is

  565. condemned

  566. already,

  567. because he

  568. has not

  569. believed in

  570. the name

  571. of the

  572. only son

  573. of God.

  574. Here's

  575. the,

  576. that's all

  577. profound

  578. stuff,

  579. worthy of

  580. profound

  581. meditation

  582. and memorization.

  583. Listen to

  584. this next

  585. bit,

  586. verse 19.

  587. And this

  588. is the

  589. judgment.

  590. The light

  591. has come

  592. into the

  593. world,

  594. and people

  595. loved the

  596. darkness

  597. rather than

  598. the light

  599. because their

  600. works were

  601. evil.

  602. For everyone

  603. who does

  604. wicked things

  605. hates the

  606. light and

  607. does not

  608. come to

  609. the light

  610. lest his

  611. works should

  612. be exposed.

  613. But whoever

  614. does what is

  615. true comes

  616. to the light

  617. so that it

  618. may be clearly

  619. seen that his

  620. works have been

  621. carried out in

  622. God.

  623. This text

  624. brilliantly

  625. captures the

  626. fact that

  627. on one hand

  628. we have a

  629. profound desire

  630. to be seen,

  631. but that if

  632. we're honest,

  633. our desire to

  634. be seen is

  635. complicated

  636. because we

  637. don't want

  638. those bad

  639. things in

  640. our current

  641. life and in

  642. our past

  643. to be seen.

  644. And the

  645. wonder of the

  646. gospel is

  647. this.

  648. God sees

  649. those things

  650. that you

  651. hide from

  652. yourself.

  653. He sees

  654. those things

  655. that I

  656. hide from

  657. myself and

  658. from others.

  659. He sees

  660. it.

  661. He sees

  662. me.

  663. And still

  664. he loved

  665. me, Jesus

  666. did, and

  667. died for me

  668. that I

  669. might be

  670. forgiven and

  671. made right

  672. with God.

  673. Some of us

  674. know that one

  675. of the best

  676. possible gifts

  677. that we can

  678. get is when

  679. somebody gives

  680. us a gift

  681. that we

  682. don't know

  683. that we

  684. need.

  685. But we

  686. really do.

  687. Maybe it's

  688. going to

  689. another country

  690. or entering

  691. into a new

  692. stage of life

  693. or moving

  694. to a new

  695. city or

  696. entering a

  697. new stage

  698. of life

  699. like in

  700. university

  701. or living

  702. on your

  703. own or

  704. whatever,

  705. and somebody,

  706. a parent or

  707. a grandparent

  708. gives us a

  709. gift, and we

  710. sort of get

  711. the gift, and

  712. we sort of

  713. look at it

  714. and think

  715. that's sort

  716. of odd, and

  717. then a couple

  718. of months in

  719. or a year

  720. in, all of a

  721. sudden we

  722. realize that,

  723. whoa, I

  724. really needed

  725. that gift.

  726. I didn't

  727. realize I

  728. needed that

  729. gift.

  730. And that's

  731. also part of

  732. the thing

  733. which is so

  734. wonderful about

  735. the gospel.

  736. The average

  737. human being

  738. doesn't realize

  739. they need a

  740. savior.

  741. And God

  742. saw and

  743. heard our

  744. deep needs,

  745. and even

  746. when we did

  747. not desire it,

  748. he provided,

  749. and even

  750. when we did

  751. not realize

  752. that we

  753. needed a

  754. savior, he

  755. sent Jesus

  756. to be our

  757. savior.

  758. savior.

  759. And you

  760. see then, if

  761. you understand

  762. why do we

  763. need the

  764. word of

  765. God?

  766. You see, what

  767. the word of

  768. God is, the

  769. word of

  770. God is sort

  771. of expressed

  772. in a bit

  773. of a, sort

  774. of a funny

  775. type of

  776. phrase.

  777. If you go

  778. through all

  779. of the

  780. book of

  781. Acts, the

  782. word of

  783. God refers

  784. to the

  785. good news

  786. about Jesus

  787. understood in

  788. light of

  789. the Bible,

  790. and the

  791. word of

  792. God is the

  793. Bible understood

  794. in light of

  795. the good news

  796. about Jesus.

  797. That's what

  798. the word of

  799. God is.

  800. And why do

  801. we desperately

  802. need it?

  803. Because if you

  804. think about

  805. this, this is

  806. exactly the

  807. type of

  808. medicine we

  809. need to

  810. deal with

  811. neglect and

  812. sin and not

  813. being seen

  814. and not being

  815. heard.

  816. We are

  817. reminded from

  818. the Bible

  819. that God

  820. sees me.

  821. He even

  822. sees the

  823. things about

  824. me which

  825. are terrible.

  826. And still

  827. he loves me

  828. and still

  829. he sent his

  830. son to die

  831. for me.

  832. And he

  833. does that

  834. for me and

  835. for people

  836. that I think

  837. I'm better

  838. than and

  839. people that I

  840. think,

  841. I'm worse

  842. than.

  843. And he

  844. does that.

  845. And he

  846. does it

  847. without prejudice.

  848. And if we

  849. realize that

  850. the very

  851. heart of the

  852. gospel is a

  853. God who

  854. sees us and

  855. acts to us

  856. without any

  857. prejudice but

  858. only with

  859. love, how

  860. on earth can

  861. I then have

  862. prejudice?

  863. And how

  864. could I not

  865. desire to be

  866. one who

  867. sees people

  868. and hears

  869. them?

  870. how could I

  871. not be one

  872. that if

  873. somebody says

  874. you're not

  875. listening to

  876. me that

  877. I potentially

  878. am really

  879. struck to the

  880. heart by

  881. that?

  882. And at the

  883. same time

  884. as that

  885. sin comes

  886. to me and

  887. confronts me,

  888. because I

  889. know that

  890. Jesus saw it

  891. and has

  892. forgiven me,

  893. it gives me

  894. a place to

  895. stand.

  896. And rather

  897. than getting

  898. defensive, and

  899. rather than

  900. attacking, and

  901. rather than

  902. getting on my

  903. high horse, and

  904. rather than

  905. trying to cause

  906. a power play,

  907. or anything else

  908. like that, that

  909. I can say, it

  910. might not be

  911. right away, it

  912. might be 48

  913. hours, 72

  914. hours, it

  915. might be 72

  916. days, it

  917. might be 20

  918. years, but say,

  919. you know what,

  920. you're right.

  921. You're right.

  922. Only the

  923. gospel gives us

  924. a secure place

  925. to stand that

  926. does not

  927. unmake us.

  928. that we can

  929. acknowledge those

  930. things, and

  931. repent and

  932. amend our

  933. lives, as the

  934. gospel becomes

  935. more real to

  936. us.

  937. And that's why

  938. you see, brothers

  939. and sisters, it

  940. is so essential

  941. that the first

  942. thing that goes

  943. on in a church

  944. is that the

  945. word of God

  946. is shared

  947. to those who

  948. do not know

  949. Jesus, to

  950. those who do

  951. know Jesus.

  952. It is our

  953. life, it is

  954. our health.

  955. In fact, actually,

  956. if you look, if

  957. you could go back

  958. to Acts, and

  959. go to Acts

    Acts 6:7

  960. chapter 6,

  961. verse 7, Luke

  962. sort of coins a

  963. phrase, he

  964. invents an

  965. expression, and

  966. it's in verse

  967. 7, and the

  968. word of God

  969. continued to

  970. increase.

  971. Well, what does

  972. that mean?

  973. Sorry, I'll read

  974. the whole thing.

  975. And the word of

  976. God continued to

  977. increase, and the

  978. number of the

  979. disciples multiplied

  980. greatly in

  981. Jerusalem, and a

  982. great many of the

  983. priests became

  984. obedient to the

  985. faith.

  986. It's a wonderful

  987. picture of what

  988. happened.

  989. But you see, the

  990. fact of the matter

  991. is, it's because

  992. it's the word of

  993. God that feeds the

  994. church, that creates

  995. the church.

  996. The church is a

  997. creature of the

  998. word of God.

  999. That's what we're

  1000. seeing here in

  1001. that sect.

  1002. That's why it's so

  1003. important.

  1004. And so what's

1005. going on here is a

  1006. very important

  1007. principle, and it's

  1008. an important

  1009. principle.

  1010. You know, when I

  1011. said that we need

  1012. to be praying about

  1013. whether we're doing

  1014. God's work and

  1015. God's way, and just

  1016. pray that God will

  1017. provide.

  1018. And part of the

  1019. thing here is to

  1020. showing that it's

  1021. not a matter that

  1022. preaching the word of

1023. God is like this, and

  1024. everything else is

  1025. completely unimportant.

  1026. No, it's not a

  1027. matter of

  1028. importance.

1029. There is a need for

  1030. care and for

  1031. organization and for

  1032. administration and

  1033. looking after the

  1034. little kids in Sunday

  1035. school and all that

  1036. type of stuff.

  1037. That's very important.

  1038. It's not like there's

  1039. this and there's this.

  1040. There's this.

  1041. And the church needs

1042. to say, we need to

  1043. make sure that it's

1044. not that my only job

  1045. should be sharing the

  1046. word and praying.

  1047. And by the way,

  1048. prayers here would have

  1049. meant both private

  1050. prayers and what we're

  1051. doing now, which is

  1052. corporate prayer.

1053. You need to make sure

  1054. I'm spending enough

  1055. time on that, folks.

1056. And you need to have

  1057. your small groups that

  1058. are taking time with

  1059. that.

  1060. And the Sunday school

1061. needs to have that as

  1062. first and foremost.

1063. But on the other hand,

  1064. like what Shannon does

  1065. for the church, like

  1066. she's going to be

  1067. stepping aside because

  1068. God's blessing her and

  1069. Owen with another baby

1070. and like there should be

  1071. high fives all around

  1072. for what she does.

  1073. It's so important.

  1074. And for Barbara Allen

  1075. and, you know, for

  1076. Marlene and what she's

  1077. done for the Sunday

1078. school and I could go

1079. on and on with people

  1080. have a service heart

  1081. for the needs of

  1082. children and just the

  1083. whole congregation.

  1084. Those things are very,

  1085. very important.

1086. They have to be done.

  1087. That's the lesson of

  1088. the text.

1089. Lesson of the text is

  1090. these things really have

  1091. to be done.

1092. And don't just think of

  1093. organization at the end

  1094. of the day.

1095. You need to have that

  1096. organization involved in

1097. such a way that the

1098. word of God is being

  1099. proclaimed and shared and

  1100. taught and modeled.

  1101. And that there's prayer

  1102. because that's our food.

  1103. That's what we desperately

  1104. need.

  1105. That's what I desperately

  1106. need every week.

1107. That's what we all need.

1108. I invite you to stand.

1109. Bow your heads in prayer.

  1110. Let's pray.

  1111. Father, you know the

  1112. different things of prejudice

  1113. that we're blind to.

  1114. Just are.

1115. Just part of our culture

1116. and we just sort of

  1117. accept it.

1118. But you see it and you

  1119. hate it.

  1120. Father, we give you

1121. thanks and praise that you

  1122. really do see us.

1123. That at the last judgment,

1124. nobody will be able to say

1125. to you at the last judgment

1126. that, God, you didn't see me.

1127. Like, nobody will be able

  1128. to say that.

1129. Nobody will be able to say

  1130. at the last judgment.

1131. God, you didn't hear me.

  1132. You do see.

  1133. You do hear.

1134. You sent Jesus to be our

  1135. Savior.

1136. And so, Father, we ask that

  1137. this precious Jesus, the

1138. person of Jesus and what

1139. he's done for us, which is

  1140. so precious, will become

1141. more and more real to our

1142. heart so that we will be

  1143. less defensive when we're

  1144. caught out doing wrong.

1145. We will be more open to

1146. repent for you and when

  1147. necessary before others of

1148. the wrong that we've done

1149. and make amendment of life.

1150. Father, we thank you for

1151. the wonder of the gospel.

1152. We ask that you would kill

  1153. any prejudice, any racism

  1154. within us.

1155. And we ask all these things

1156. in the name of Jesus, your

1157. Son and our Savior, and all

  1158. God's people said, Amen.

  1159. Amen.
