  1. Our reading is from Isaiah chapter 11, a prophetic oracle that we'll be looking at.

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  2. There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his root shall bear fruit,

  3. and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

  4. the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord,

  5. and his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

  6. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

  7. but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.

  8. And he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

  9. Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

  10. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,

  11. and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together, and a little child shall lead them.

  12. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together,

  13. and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

  14. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,

  15. and the weaned child shall put his hands on the others then.

  16. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain,

  17. for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

  18. In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples,

  19. of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

  20. In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time,

  21. to recover the remnant that remains of his people,

  22. from Assyria, from Egypt, from Paphros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath,

  23. and from the coastlands of the sea.

  24. He will raise a signal for the nations, and will assemble the banished of Israel,

  25. and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

  26. The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and those who harass Judah shall be cut off.

  27. Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephraim.

  28. But they shall swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines in the west,

  29. and together they shall plunder the people of the east.

  30. They shall put out their hands against Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them.

  31. And the Lord will utterly destroy the tongue of the sea of Egypt,

  32. and will wave his hand over the river with his scorching breath,

  33. and strike it into seven channels.

  34. And he will lead people across in sandals.

  35. And there will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that remains of his people,

  36. as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.

  37. Now, Watermark is a great church, but sometimes it feels a bit unusual,

  38. because many people are wealthy and successful.

  39. In many countries, and many times in history, the church looks very different.

  40. It was made up of the poor, the marginalized, slaves, women,

  41. who have always been a big part of the church.

  42. Why? Because the Bible is about hope.

  43. The Bible story is about hope, that God will make everything right.

  44. But hope is only appealing for the hopeless, the desperate, those without power,

  45. while those with a good life are often not very open.

  46. Maybe some of you know that, because that's how you came to faith.

  47. It was some kind of crisis.

  48. Maybe you lost someone or something, and something happened,

  49. and you faced hopelessness.

  50. And that is when the gospel came to life.

  51. Sometimes even on a national level, like the revival in Korea.

  52. So, the church has grown so much,

  53. but a lot of that had to do with the Japanese occupation,

  54. and the Korean War.

  55. And so today, as we're looking at the prophetic books of the Bible,

  56. especially we'll look at hope,

  57. because if you were here last week, Israel needed it.

  58. And the story of the Bible is how God will make the world right.

  59. It was perfect, but then we sinned,

  60. and everything fell apart.

  61. But God made promises to Israel,

  62. and slowly over the past few weeks,

  63. which, well, we covered hundreds of years,

  64. they were almost there.

  65. They almost reached the fulfillment under Solomon.

  66. It was so wonderful.

  67. But then, as we heard last week,

  68. Solomon sinned, and everything fell apart.

  69. His kingdom split in two.

  70. And then 200 years later,

  71. the north went into exile by the Assyrians,

  72. and then 130 years later,

  73. the south went into exile by the Babylonians.

  74. And you can imagine the hopelessness of the people.

  75. We were so close,

  76. but now everything's falling apart.

  77. God, what are you doing?

  78. God, what is happening?

  79. Most people are gone,

  80. and a lot are dead,

  81. and the rest are now slaves in a foreign country.

  82. It was the greatest crisis the people had ever faced,

  83. and they needed to hear from God.

  84. And that is what God did.

  85. He spoke to them.

  86. He sent prophets.

  87. Now, before we look at them,

  88. just a little introduction,

  89. so we know about prophets and how to read them.

  90. First, today we're going into a very different section of the Bible.

  91. So far, we've mainly looked just at the history,

  92. and the first few books of the Bible

  93. is basically one continuous history,

  94. all the way from Genesis to Nehemiah.

  95. But today, we're not looking at history.

  96. We're looking at the prophets.

  97. And we divide the Old Testament usually into four sections,

  98. the law, history, wisdom, and prophets.

  99. But it's not like this came after the history.

  100. Actually, it came at the same time.

  101. It's not sequential.

  102. It's the same time as, yeah, like two kings, basically.

  103. These incredibly significant events we talked about,

  104. the exile of Israel,

  105. the exile of Judah,

  106. and then 70 years later,

  107. they returned to the land.

  108. And these were major disasters

  109. when people needed God's words.

  110. And so the prophets,

  111. they span about 300 years,

  112. maybe from 740 BC Amos

  113. to 440 BC Malachi,

  114. something like that.

  115. At the same time,

  116. it is a new stage in God's plan.

  117. That's why we're talking about it.

  118. Not just in one book,

  119. but across all the prophets,

  120. God reveals a new stage of his plan.

  121. And so, yeah, today,

  122. in a way, I'm covering about 25% of the Old Testament.

  123. It's quite a lot.

  124. So we will look at multiple books.

  125. But what do prophets do?

  126. In some way, they're heralds.

  127. They're spokesmen from God, right?

  128. They say,

  129. Thus says the Lord,

  130. and this is God's message.

  131. But what do they say?

  132. Often people think prophets,

  133. they foretell the future.

  134. They predict the future.

  135. I mean, they talk about future events,

  136. but that's not really what they are doing.

  137. What do prophets do?

  138. They explain the covenant.

  139. Some people call them covenant watchdogs,

  140. or covenant enforcement mediators,

  141. or something like that.

  142. But to do with the covenant,

  143. they remind people of the covenant.

  144. People are struggling.

  145. What is happening?

  146. And they say,

  147. Well, remember the law of Moses.

  148. Remember the covenant.

  149. So, you know,

  150. there's an Assyrian army outside Jerusalem,

  151. and the people are wondering

  152. what's going to happen.

  153. And, well, the prophets,

  154. they say,

  155. Well, you've broken the covenant.

  156. God should be at the center of your life.

  157. And if you don't do that,

  158. you face his curse.

  159. And, well, you've been worshipping idols.

  160. You've broken the covenant.

  161. That's why there's Assyrians.

  162. And if you don't repent,

  163. they are going to destroy the city

  164. and take all your stuff.

  165. That's basically what they say.

  166. So, it's not like they've had a vision of the future.

  167. They're just explaining the covenant

  168. in very creative ways.

  169. But that's basically what they do.

  170. I mean, silly illustration.

  171. What happens if I let something go?

  172. If I hold it and I let go,

  173. well, you probably will tell me,

  174. well, it's going to fall to the ground.

  175. Now, have you just predicted the future?

  176. Well, yeah, you have.

  177. But that's not really what you do, right?

  178. You haven't had a vision of that thing falling.

  179. It's just you're explaining gravity.

  180. What prophets, they do,

  181. they explain the covenant.

  182. They explain God's word

  183. and apply it to their situation.

  184. Which I think is interesting for the New Testament, right?

  185. The gift of prophecy

  186. is that about foretelling the future?

  187. Or is it more about applying God's words?

  188. We will not go there now.

  189. But basically, they provide commentary

  190. on what is happening.

  191. Which is why it's good to know the history.

  192. Because you can read the prophets in context.

  193. And what is the main thing they're saying?

  194. And they explain the covenant.

  195. Well, what is the current situation?

  196. As you've heard last week,

  197. Israel was sinning.

  198. They were turning away.

  199. They were worshipping idols.

  200. And so generally,

  201. they just announce judgment.

  202. And things are falling apart.

  203. And the prophets say,

  204. well, it's getting worse.

  205. You're getting judged.

  206. Sin has consequences.

  207. And you've rejected God.

  208. And so you face judgment.

  209. Now, it depends a little bit

  210. on when the prophets spoke.

  211. Especially as they are approaching the exile.

  212. Lots of sin and judgment.

  213. So Jeremiah or Ezekiel,

  214. the first half of the book,

  215. is just hopeless judgment.

  216. While, for example,

  217. after they're back from exile,

  218. it's slightly different.

  219. But I'm not going to go into the judgment.

  220. Because it doesn't really develop the story.

  221. No, the prophets also remind the people

  222. of other covenants.

  223. Particularly the one with David.

  224. As they are facing disaster and judgment,

  225. the prophets remind them,

  226. well, hey, God promised

  227. that you would dwell in the land.

  228. That you would have peace forever.

  229. Under a king from David's family.

  230. And so, most oracles,

  231. they have to deal with David's family.

  232. And that's what you see even in what we read.

  233. Isaiah 1.

  234. So Isaiah 11, verse 1.

    Isaiah 11:1

  235. There shall come forth a shoot

  236. from the stump of Jesse.

  237. It's how it started.

  238. Now, Jesse was David's father.

  239. So someone from David's family.

  240. Right?

  241. And almost every prophet does that.

  242. They link the future to the Davidic king.

  243. And yet it's not the same.

  244. Yet God starts to reveal his full plan.

  245. It's like there's a room

  246. and it's been a bit dim

  247. and we can't really see it.

  248. And now God turns on the light

  249. and he shows the full extent of his plan.

  250. That's why the prophets are part of this storyline.

  251. Unlike, for example, the wisdom literature.

  252. Right?

  253. Because slowly God is now going to build up

  254. a picture of the full scale of what he's doing.

  255. And I'm going to cover it quite comprehensively.

  256. A lot of detail.

  257. Not because this is a lecture.

  258. But just seeing the scale of God's plan

  259. is mind-blowing.

  260. Breathtaking.

  261. Right?

  262. And the detail makes that out.

  263. I mean, if you...

  264. Someone says,

  265. Okay, I've got a new phone.

  266. It's the best phone ever.

  267. How do you work that out?

  268. Well, you look at the specs

  269. and one by one,

  270. Oh yeah, this really is the best phone ever.

  271. And I think the prophets,

  272. they say three big things.

  273. There's the what,

  274. the how,

  275. and the who

  276. of God's plan.

  277. Okay.

  278. So first the what.

  279. And that is a full reversal

  280. of the full.

  281. God is doing a full reversal

  282. of the full.

  283. He said before

  284. he will restore the kingdom.

  285. But now it's explicit

  286. we're going all the way

  287. to the Garden of Eden

  288. and further.

  289. I mean, let's build up a picture.

  290. First, of course,

  291. I mean, the people are in exile,

  292. so they need rescue.

  293. So there's a return

  294. from exile promised.

  295. So in Isaiah 11,

    Isaiah 11:11

  296. verse 11,

  297. In that day,

  298. the Lord will extend his hand

  299. yet a second time

  300. to recover the remnant

  301. that remains of his people

  302. from Assyria,

  303. from Egypt,

  304. from Baphros,

  305. from Cush, etc.

  306. Verse 12,

  307. He will raise a signal

  308. for the nations

  309. and will assemble

  310. the banished of Israel.

  311. And so he will bring

  312. the people back.

  313. And it's like

  314. a second exodus,

  315. right?

  316. You heard a second time.

  317. Look at verse 16.

  318. And there will be

  319. a highway from Assyria

  320. for the remnant

  321. that remains of his people

  322. as there was for Israel

  323. when they came up

  324. from the land of Egypt.

  325. So, yeah,

  326. there's a return from exile

  327. which is like

  328. another exodus

  329. with a big rescue

  330. by God.

  331. But this one

  332. is so much bigger.

  333. You remember

  334. back then

  335. they walked

  336. through the Red Sea,

  337. right?

  338. God blew winds

  339. and there was

  340. this path

  341. through the sea.

  342. But now look

  343. at verse 15.

  344. And the Lord

  345. will utterly destroy

  346. the tongue

  347. of the sea of Egypt

  348. and will wave

  349. his hands

  350. over the river

  351. with his scorching breath.

  352. It's like

  353. God will just,

  354. he will just dry

  355. up the Red Sea

  356. completely.

  357. This is like

  358. a complete

  359. final rescue

  360. to bring them

  361. back to the land.

  362. So it's much bigger.

  363. Peace, right?

  364. Their big promise

  365. was that they would

  366. have peace

  367. and no more disturbing.

  368. Which is why

  369. a lot of the prophets,

  370. they have judgments

  371. against foreign nations

  372. that their enemies

  373. are gone, right?

  374. The main problem

  375. for them was often

  376. these other nations

  377. that attacked them.

  378. And so,

  379. if God says

  380. I'm going to get rid

  381. of all the foreign nations,

  382. that's in a way

  383. wonderful, right?

  384. It's safety.

  385. And yet,

  386. this peace

  387. is so much greater.

  388. I mean,

  389. look at verse 6.

  390. It's,

  391. you know,

  392. the wolf shall dwell

  393. with the lamb

  394. and the leopard

  395. shall lie down

  396. with the young goat

  397. and the calf

  398. and the lion

  399. and the fattened calf

  400. together

  401. and a little child

  402. shall lead them.

  403. Right?

  404. This is not just

  405. foreign armies.

  406. This is animals

  407. have peace.

  408. Right?

  409. And, you know,

  410. wolves and leopards,

  411. they don't make

  412. political alliances,

  413. right?

  414. They don't sign

  415. peace treaties.

  416. They,

  417. you know,

  418. they're naturally

  419. predators.

  420. And yet,

  421. they're going to be

  422. fully transformed.

  423. So,

  424. it's really like

  425. the Garden of Eden.

  426. Verse 9.

  427. They shall not hurt

  428. or destroy

  429. in all my holy mountain

  430. for the earth

  431. shall be full

  432. of the knowledge

  433. of the Lord

  434. as the waters

  435. cover the sea.

  436. It's going to be

  437. a complete transformation.

  438. The whole world

  439. will know God

  440. and no one

  441. will fight anymore,

  442. not even animals.

  443. Isaiah,

  444. he talks elsewhere

  445. about a new creation.

  446. I create new heavens

  447. and a new earth.

  448. So,

  449. this is a worldwide

  450. transformation.

  451. It's not just,

  452. yeah,

  453. sometimes people

  454. ping the prophets,

  455. they talk about

  456. a physical return

  457. of Israel

  458. as a nation,

  459. but this is far

  460. greater,

  461. actually,

  462. if you read it,

  463. right?

  464. It's a new creation.

  465. And, of course,

  466. there's blessing

  467. like never before.

  468. The mountains

  469. will drip sweet wine

  470. and the hills

  471. will flow with milk

  472. and the sower

  473. will overtake the reaper.

  474. There's so much harvest

  475. that, yeah,

  476. they're still reaping

  477. but in the sowing time again.

  478. One of the most amazing things

  479. is that there's going to be

  480. no more death.

  481. I mean,

  482. that was always

  483. the ultimate curse,

  484. right?

  485. How did Genesis 2 start?

  486. Well,

  487. if you sin,

  488. the day you eat of it,

  489. you will die.

  490. Death is always

  491. the ultimate thing

  492. and even under Solomon,

  493. the people still died,

  494. right?

  495. But look at Isaiah 25,

  496. 6 to 8,

  497. it's in the bulletin.

  498. Isaiah 25,

  499. look at what God promises here.

  500. Isaiah 25, verse 6,

    Isaiah 25:6

  501. On this mountain

  502. the Lord of hosts

  503. will make for all peoples

  504. a feast of rich food,

  505. a feast of well-aged wine,

  506. of rich food full of marrow,

  507. of aged wine well refined.

  508. It's not a poor existence,

  509. right?

  510. An incredible wedding banquet.

  511. But then verse 7,

  512. And he will swallow up

  513. on this mountain

  514. the covering that is cast

  515. over all peoples,

  516. the veil that is spread

  517. over all nations.

  518. He will swallow up death

  519. forever.

  520. And the Lord God

  521. will wipe away tears

  522. from all faces,

  523. right?

  524. People will live,

  525. there will be no more death.

  526. People will live forever.

  527. And not just that people

  528. won't die anymore.

  529. 26, 19, Isaiah,

  530. it says,

  531. Your dead shall live,

  532. their bodies shall rise.

  533. You who dwell in it,

  534. dust awake.

  535. So even people

  536. who are currently dead

  537. will come back to life.

  538. Right?

  539. That is what God is saying.

  540. So it's really

  541. a full reversal

  542. of the fall.

  543. A new creation.

  544. No more death.

  545. A full,

  546. complete,

  547. final rescue.

  548. all the consequences

  549. are solved.

  550. So, you know,

  551. their promises,

  552. yeah,

  553. it goes up and up and up

  554. again beyond

  555. the Garden of Eden.

  556. And again,

  557. that's so much grace,

  558. right?

  559. I mean,

  560. who is this spoken to?

  561. People in exile

  562. for their idolatry

  563. and sins.

  564. People who deserve nothing

  565. and God promises

  566. them everything.

  567. How would you feel,

  568. right?

  569. No more,

  570. yeah,

  571. transformed world.

  572. No more death.

  573. No more losing loved ones.

  574. In fact,

  575. your loved ones

  576. are going to come back

  577. from the dead.

  578. This is such a wonderful thing.

  579. At the same time,

  580. it can feel so big

  581. that it's kind of

  582. hard to believe.

  583. Right?

  584. Israel is not doing well.

  585. Everything's falling apart.

  586. And then,

  587. yeah,

  588. not just everything,

  589. God's plan seems to be

  590. falling apart,

  591. right?

  592. God's kingdom.

  593. And now God is saying

  594. he's going to do

  595. something so big.

  596. I mean,

  597. it's like,

  598. it's completely the opposite

  599. of their experience.

  600. You know,

  601. it's quite hard to believe,

  602. right?

  603. Remember,

  604. two weeks ago,

  605. I said,

  606. yeah,

  607. it's like a scale model

  608. of a big building

  609. to give you a preview.

  610. But imagine someone

  611. shows you a scale model

  612. and it's falling apart,

  613. right?

  614. It's wobbly

  615. and then it crashes

  616. and then they tell you,

  617. yeah,

  618. please invest in the big thing

  619. I'm doing.

  620. You wouldn't have any confidence.

  621. How can God do this

  622. when his current plan

  623. seems to not work?

  624. What will guarantee it?

  625. And that is the how.

  626. It's because sin

  627. will be fully dealt with.

  628. Yeah,

  629. the second big thing

  630. God reveals,

  631. yeah,

  632. it goes together.

  633. Sin will be fully solved.

  634. The cause of the fall.

  635. And if the cause

  636. is fully solved,

  637. so can the consequences be.

  638. And it's really comprehensive.

  639. First of all,

  640. there will be a perfect

  641. divine king.

  642. We've seen already,

  643. it is a king

  644. who's going to help with sin.

  645. Except that so far,

  646. yeah,

  647. all the kings have failed

  648. because they were human

  649. and they are sinful themselves.

  650. But look at this king,

  651. this shoot from the stump of Jesse.

  652. Isaiah 11 verse 2.

    Isaiah 11:2

  653. And the spirit of the Lord

  654. shall rest upon him,

  655. the spirit of wisdom

  656. and understanding,

  657. the spirit of counsel

  658. and might,

  659. the spirit of knowledge

  660. and the fear of the Lord.

  661. And his delight

  662. shall be in the fear

  663. of the Lord.

  664. He shall not judge

  665. by what his eyes see

  666. or decide disputes

  667. by what his ears hear,

  668. but with righteousness

  669. he shall judge the poor.

  670. Yeah?

  671. So here's a king

  672. who has wisdom

  673. from the Holy Spirit

  674. that no human king

  675. has ever had.

  676. And so he can rule perfectly.

  677. He will bring perfect justice.

  678. Right?

  679. This oracle is linked

  680. with Isaiah 9

  681. which we always read

  682. with Christmas.

  683. And he will be called

  684. Wonderful Counselor,

  685. Mighty God,

  686. Everlasting Father,

  687. Prince of Peace.

  688. Basically,

  689. God himself will be the king.

  690. Alright?

  691. There's no good human king

  692. and so God says,

  693. I will be the king.

  694. God is perfect in power

  695. and love

  696. and justice

  697. and everlasting.

  698. And so,

  699. he is the perfect king.

  700. He can deal with sin.

  701. But not just the king.

  702. There will be a new covenant.

  703. That's also in Isaiah

  704. but the most famous passage

  705. is in Jeremiah 31.

  706. So Jeremiah 31,

    Jeremiah 31:31

  707. verse 31.

  708. Behold,

  709. the days are coming,

  710. declares the Lord,

  711. when I will make

  712. a new covenant

  713. with the house of Israel

  714. and the house of Judah.

  715. Not like the covenant

  716. that I made

  717. with their fathers

  718. on the day

  719. when I took them

  720. by the hand

  721. to bring them out

  722. to the land of Egypt.

  723. So a new covenant

  724. different from the one

  725. when I came out of Egypt.

  726. My covenant

  727. that they broke

  728. though I was their husband,

  729. declares the Lord.

  730. What was the problem

  731. with the old covenant?

  732. It could be broken

  733. and they broke it.

  734. I mean,

  735. that's why the people

  736. are in exile.

  737. So the problem is

  738. they have a covenant

  739. that's conditional,

  740. that involves law keeping

  741. and that's the problem.

  742. So instead,

  743. this is the covenant

  744. I will make.

  745. I will put my law

  746. within them

  747. and write it on their hearts.

  748. I will be their God.

  749. They shall meet my people.

  750. They will all know me

  751. for I will forgive

  752. their iniquity

  753. and I will remember

  754. their sin no more.

  755. And here is a new covenant

  756. based on forgiveness

  757. where God will no longer

  758. act on sin.

  759. Right?

  760. And that's so wonderful

  761. because sin was the problem.

  762. Right?

  763. But the covenant,

  764. well the covenant was good

  765. but it was a problem

  766. for sinners

  767. because it brought judgment.

  768. But that will be different.

  769. It's like

  770. when you have a job

  771. you can be on probation

  772. and after your probation

  773. you're on a permanent contract.

  774. And so in theory

  775. you then shouldn't

  776. get fired anymore.

  777. Except,

  778. of course,

  779. you still get fired.

  780. But you know what I mean,

  781. right?

  782. On probation

  783. versus permanent.

  784. And that's so great

  785. because when you're on probation

  786. you need to perform

  787. and if you don't perform

  788. you will lose the job.

  789. And so a permanent contract

  790. is wonderful news.

  791. But that's what God is offering.

  792. I'm going to make

  793. a permanent contract

  794. with these people.

  795. The only thing is

  796. normally you get

  797. a permanent contract

  798. because you've been good.

  799. and now God says

  800. well I'm giving you

  801. a permanent contract

  802. because you've been terrible

  803. and I don't want to have

  804. to fire you again

  805. and that's why you're getting

  806. a permanent contract.

  807. It's grace.

  808. It's wonderful.

  809. But yeah,

  810. the judgment will be dealt with

  811. because there's no more

  812. law keeping

  813. with punishment.

  814. But how will they have

  815. the law on their hearts

  816. so deep inside?

  817. Well they will have

  818. new hearts

  819. by the Spirit.

  820. That's a big thing

  821. in Ezekiel 36

    Ezekiel 36:26

  822. verse 26.

  823. The problem

  824. as we saw

  825. the past weeks

  826. is our heart.

  827. The human heart

  828. is just full of idols

  829. and sin

  830. so we need new hearts

  831. and that's what God says.

  832. Ezekiel 36 26

  833. And I will give you

  834. a new heart

  835. and a new spirit

  836. I will put within you

  837. and I will remove

  838. the heart of stone

  839. from your flesh

  840. and give you

  841. a heart of flesh

  842. and I will put

  843. my spirit within you

  844. and cause you

  845. to walk in my statutes

  846. and be careful

  847. to obey my rules.

  848. He's going to give them

  849. a new heart

  850. by putting the spirit

  851. inside them.

  852. To be honest

  853. this is quite humbling

  854. right?

  855. God has to

  856. you know

  857. how sinful

  858. are we really?

  859. Well the only

  860. way that God

  861. can think of

  862. to stop us sinning

  863. is that he comes

  864. and lives inside us

  865. and forces us

  866. to obey him.

  867. That's basically

  868. what God is saying.

  869. That's how sinful

  870. we are.

  871. Sin runs so deep

  872. God has to come

  873. and live inside you

  874. to make you stop sinning.

  875. That's how bad things are

  876. but wonderfully

  877. that's what he promises

  878. he's going to give

  879. the spirit

  880. and so

  881. not only will we have

  882. an unbreakable covenant

  883. by the spirit

  884. people will no longer

  885. sin.

  886. Right?

  887. So it is really

  888. everything about sin

  889. is going to be dealt with.

  890. There's going to be

  891. a perfect sacrifice

  892. all through the Old Testament

  893. there's sacrifices

  894. they make atonement

  895. and so there's going to be

  896. a perfect sacrifice

  897. Isaiah 53

  898. I'm not going to go into it

  899. because the next three weeks

  900. as we approach the cross

  901. we're going to look at that

  902. but yeah

  903. a perfect sacrifice

  904. and for completion

  905. Satan will be destroyed.

  906. Right?

  907. That's how things went wrong

  908. in Genesis 3

  909. remember Satan

  910. tempting

  911. did you remember Job

  912. from last year

  913. and Leviathan

  914. well Isaiah 27

  915. God says

  916. he will punish Leviathan

  917. he will slay the dragon

  918. in the sea

  919. right?

  920. He will

  921. deal with Satan

  922. but you get the picture

  923. right?

  924. God will completely

  925. and fully

  926. deal with sin

  927. the thing that

  928. has always

  929. got in the way

  930. will be

  931. sorted

  932. and the thing is

  933. God himself

  934. will do it

  935. no more human kings

  936. he will be the king

  937. no more us

  938. fighting sin

  939. he will be inside us

  940. fighting sin

  941. right?

  942. no more our obedience

  943. he will meet the demands

  944. everything is God

  945. doing it

  946. by his grace

  947. you know so far

  948. we couldn't make

  949. the world right

  950. God said

  951. I'll make the world right

  952. as long as you

  953. obey me

  954. and we can't even do that

  955. so God says

  956. I will just do everything

  957. I'll deal with the consequences

  958. and the cause

  959. I'll do it all

  960. and isn't that

  961. what we need

  962. so much

  963. right?

  964. such good news

  965. for Judah

  966. suffering in exile

  967. never again

  968. will sin be a problem

  969. that's so wonderful

  970. so amazing

  971. the only question is

  972. well

  973. for whom

  974. if God does everything

  975. and we nothing

  976. well

  977. who is it for

  978. what qualifies you

  979. and that is

  980. I think

  981. the third thing

  982. that the prophets

  983. talk about

  984. the third big change

  985. who is it for

  986. well

  987. partly

  988. everyone

  989. everyone

  990. it's kind of

  991. what you expect

  992. right

  993. I mean

  994. if God's going to

  995. make the whole world

  996. right

  997. it should be for

  998. the whole world

  999. right

  1000. you can't make

  1001. a new creation

  1002. in a little corner

  1003. it should involve

  1004. the whole world

  1005. and it does

  1006. it's not just Judah

  1007. first of all

  1008. the northern kingdom

1009. is going to come back

  1010. and we saw that

  1011. in Isaiah

  1012. because

  1013. Ephraim

  1014. is another name

  1015. for the northern kingdom

  1016. and it says

  1017. Ephraim shall not

  1018. be jealous of Judah

  1019. and Judah shall not

  1020. harass Ephraim

  1021. they shall swoop

  1022. down on the

  1023. shoulder of the

  1024. Philistines in the west

  1025. and together

  1026. they shall plunder

1027. the people of the east

  1028. so

  1029. north and south

  1030. are going to be

  1031. back together

  1032. again

  1033. and that was the

  1034. first

  1035. start of the downfall

  1036. when the kingdom split

1037. and that's going to be

  1038. undone

  1039. north and south

  1040. will be back together

  1041. but also the nations

  1042. coming in

  1043. it's in Isaiah 11

  1044. but

  1045. you heard it especially

  1046. in Isaiah 25

  1047. right

  1048. who is this banquet

  1049. for?

  1050. for all peoples

  1051. and

1052. death will be swallowed up

  1053. well

1054. the veil that is cast

  1055. over all nations

  1056. right

  1057. it's for all nations

  1058. for Jews

  1059. and Gentiles

1060. it was always the plan

  1061. back with Abraham

  1062. but in the prophets

  1063. it becomes very clear

  1064. they are fully included

  1065. they're not just

  1066. on the side

  1067. watching him

  1068. they're fully included

  1069. which is why

  1070. our church is here

  1071. right

  1072. because

  1073. I don't think

  1074. any of us

  1075. are Jews

  1076. we're all Gentiles

  1077. and yet

  1078. we're fully included

  1079. in God's people

  1080. so in some way

  1081. it's everyone

  1082. but

  1083. does it mean

  1084. everyone is just saved?

  1085. every human being ever?

  1086. no

  1087. actually

  1088. there is a change

  1089. especially

  1090. you see that

  1091. with Judah

  1092. because so far

  1093. God has dealt

  1094. with

  1095. the nation

  1096. right

1097. they came out of Egypt

  1098. as a nation

  1099. they were blessed

  1100. under Solomon

  1101. as a nation

1102. they went to the exile

  1103. as a nation

  1104. but in the prophets

  1105. God makes clear

1106. I'm going to do it differently

  1107. I'm going to deal

  1108. with individuals

  1109. there's going to be

  1110. a division

  1111. you don't wonder

  1112. well

  1113. who are the people

  1114. God will save

  1115. and you might expect

  1116. him to say

  1117. well it's the most

  1118. righteous people

  1119. right

  1120. everyone who meets

  1121. the standard

  1122. but

  1123. yeah

  1124. you've seen the history

  1125. of Israel

  1126. there are no

  1127. righteous people

  1128. instead

  1129. it's everyone

  1130. who is repentant

  1131. everyone who is repentant

  1132. just listen to

  1133. what

  1134. God's people say

  1135. in Isaiah 64

  1136. starting at verse 5

  1137. you meet him

  1138. who joyfully

  1139. works righteousness

  1140. those who remember

  1141. you in your ways

  1142. behold

  1143. you were angry

  1144. and we sinned

  1145. in our sins

1146. we have been a long time

1147. and shall we be saved

  1148. we have all become

1149. like one who is unclean

1150. and all our righteous deeds

1151. are like a polluted garment

1152. we all fade like a leaf

  1153. and our iniquities

  1154. like the wind

  1155. take us away

  1156. verse 8

  1157. but now oh lord

  1158. you are our father

  1159. we are the clay

1160. and you are our potter

1161. we are all the work

  1162. of your hand

1163. be not so terribly angry

  1164. oh lord

  1165. and remember not

  1166. iniquity forever

  1167. behold please look

1168. we are all your people

  1169. yeah

  1170. you can hear it

  1171. they're not Pharisees

  1172. they are humble

  1173. and contrite

  1174. they know they've sinned

  1175. they know they don't

  1176. deserve anything

  1177. but they

  1178. they just appeal

  1179. to God's mercy

  1180. and that's the kind

  1181. of people that

  1182. God says

1183. yeah these are the people

  1184. I esteem

  1185. the people I welcome

  1186. on the other hand

  1187. there's other people

  1188. and they

  1189. they continue to refuse

  1190. God

  1191. so next chapter

  1192. Isaiah 65

    Isaiah 65:2

  1193. verse 2

1194. I spread out my hands

  1195. all the day

  1196. to a rebellious people

1197. who walk in a way

  1198. that is not good

  1199. following their own devices

1200. a people who provoke me

  1201. to my face continually

  1202. sacrificing in gardens

  1203. and making offerings

  1204. on bricks

  1205. who eat pigs

  1206. flesh

  1207. verse 5

  1208. who say

  1209. keep to yourself

1210. do not come near me

1211. for I am too holy

  1212. for you

  1213. these are the smoke

  1214. in my nostrils

  1215. a fire that burns

  1216. all the day

  1217. and they're gonna get

  1218. judged

  1219. even worse judgment

  1220. than the exile

  1221. people who have

  1222. no interest in God

  1223. people who

  1224. continue to ignore him

1225. and live their own way

  1226. so there's two groups

  1227. of sinners basically

  1228. but the difference

  1229. is repentance

  1230. one group repents

  1231. and they're accepted

  1232. and rescued

  1233. another group

  1234. keeps rejecting God

  1235. and they won't share

  1236. in the hope

1237. which kind of makes sense

  1238. right

  1239. because we've seen

  1240. God will take care

  1241. of our sin

  1242. drastically

  1243. but it's only those

  1244. who know

  1245. they need that

  1246. who get it

1247. but those who don't want

  1248. God to do it

  1249. either out of pride

  1250. or rebellion

  1251. they're not gonna benefit

  1252. right

  1253. so that's kind of

  1254. yeah

1255. that's the third big change

  1256. so yeah

  1257. I altogether

  1258. I hope you see

  1259. these three big things

  1260. and they're

  1261. a massive change

  1262. right

  1263. a full reversal

  1264. of the fall

1265. sin will be fully dealt

  1266. with

  1267. for everyone

  1268. who repents

1269. now what do we do

  1270. with this

  1271. for I guess

  1272. it's all clear

  1273. right

  1274. I hope you recognize

  1275. this is the gospel

  1276. this is basically

  1277. the good news

  1278. of Jesus

  1279. that God saves us

  1280. from our sin

  1281. and we just need

  1282. to repent

  1283. that's basically

  1284. right

  1285. this is just exactly

  1286. the gospel

  1287. I mean I hope

  1288. today has really

  1289. just warmed your heart

  1290. seeing how much

  1291. God promises

  1292. how complete

  1293. is his solution

  1294. to sin

  1295. so amazing

  1296. such good news

  1297. right

  1298. everything is taken

  1299. care of

  1300. law

  1301. sin

  1302. judgment

  1303. Satan

  1304. everything is taken

  1305. care of

  1306. right

  1307. we often just think

  1308. gospel is just

1309. Jesus died for my sins

1310. but I hope you see

  1311. the gospel is far

  1312. greater

  1313. far more comprehensive

  1314. than that

1315. and so this is really

  1316. really going to work

  1317. right

  1318. it's worth giving

  1319. your whole life to

  1320. and also I hope

  1321. it gives you

  1322. confidence

  1323. right

  1324. the bible is really

  1325. one book

  1326. the gospel is not

  1327. just in the new

  1328. testament

  1329. it's not just new

  1330. when Jesus comes

  1331. it's announced

  1332. in the old testament

  1333. when Peter and Paul

  1334. when they went around

  1335. preaching

  1336. they preached

  1337. from the prophets

  1338. to be honest

  1339. I think the new

  1340. testament adds

  1341. very little

  1342. that you can't

  1343. just find in the

  1344. prophets already

  1345. it's all here

  1346. and so

  1347. yeah

  1348. the whole

  1349. the prophets

  1350. are all about

  1351. the gospel

  1352. and actually

  1353. not just

  1354. the prophets

  1355. right

  1356. I hope in a way

  1357. you see

  1358. how everything

  1359. before the prophets

  1360. was just preparation

  1361. now last week

  1362. we covered

  1363. 400 years of history

  1364. of Israel suffering

  1365. under the law

  1366. and ending up

  1367. in exile

1368. but I hope you see

  1369. well they needed that

  1370. right

  1371. because hope

  1372. as we started

1373. hope is for the hopeless

  1374. and so God

  1375. in a way

1376. he got them to realize

  1377. their hopelessness

  1378. he made them realize

  1379. their sin

1380. that they couldn't solve it

  1381. that's why

1382. they were in that situation

  1383. so that they would

  1384. see their need

  1385. for Jesus

  1386. their need for God

  1387. to do it

1388. just as he often does

  1389. for us

  1390. he brings us

1391. to the end of ourselves

1392. so that we turn to him

  1393. so it's a very simple

  1394. question for us

  1395. right

  1396. what is our hope

  1397. in us

  1398. and our efforts

1399. I hope you will see

  1400. that fails

  1401. right

  1402. Israel tried

  1403. to save themselves

  1404. for 900 years

  1405. and they couldn't

  1406. we can't save ourselves

  1407. and God says

  1408. I'll do it

  1409. for you

  1410. I will take care

  1411. of everything

  1412. you just need to

  1413. admit your needs

  1414. your sin

1415. I want to rescue you

  1416. it's like when you're

  1417. drowning

  1418. and God says

  1419. here take my hand

  1420. right

  1421. the right thing

1422. to do is to grab

  1423. that hand

1424. so God will pull you out

  1425. if you refuse

  1426. to grab the hand

  1427. because you are not

  1428. interested in being saved

  1429. or because you think

  1430. you can save yourself

1431. yeah you will not be

  1432. rescued

  1433. you need to grab

  1434. God's hand

1435. so will we do that

  1436. right

  1437. as we have this

  1438. great hope

  1439. will we confess

  1440. our sin

  1441. will we turn away

  1442. from ourselves

  1443. to God

  1444. will we say

  1445. please only you

  1446. can save us

  1447. and let him

  1448. do everything

  1449. because that is

  1450. how we should

  1451. respond

  1452. that is the people

  1453. God esteems

  1454. people who know

  1455. yeah they don't

  1456. deserve it

  1457. who know they

  1458. can't save themselves

  1459. that's how we

  1460. respond to the

  1461. wonderful work of

  1462. God

  1463. to the gospel

  1464. why don't we pray

  1465. father thank you

  1466. so much for

  1467. the incredible

  1468. love

  1469. seen here

  1470. and your great

  1471. promises

  1472. this new covenant

  1473. with everything

  1474. taken care of

  1475. a full reversal

  1476. of the fall

  1477. with sin

  1478. fully dealt

  1479. with

  1480. father help us

  1481. to want that

  1482. help us to know

  1483. we need it

  1484. and to know

  1485. that we need you

  1486. to do it

  1487. help us to turn

  1488. away from ourselves

  1489. turn away from

  1490. other things

  1491. to seek our only

  1492. hope

  1493. in you

  1494. to keep

  1495. holding on to you

  1496. to keep trusting you

  1497. to keep confessing

  1498. our sins

1499. and holding on to you

  1500. because only you

  1501. can save

1502. if we see this so

  1503. clearly

  1504. please

  1505. you know

  1506. our hearts are

  1507. deceptive

  1508. please keep

  1509. transforming us

  1510. please keeping us

  1511. close

  1512. that we might

  1513. walk with you

  1514. and live for you

  1515. in this great city

  1516. showing that

  1517. you are

  1518. the only savior

  1519. in Jesus name

  1520. we pray

  1521. amen

  1522. расск

  1523. you

  1524. you

  1525. you
