  1. Hey, good morning everybody.

  2. Good morning.

  3. Good morning, thanks.

  4. If you are new to Watermark, you don't know me, my name is Kevin, one of the leaders here.

  5. It's great to be with you this morning.

  6. I saw a couple of familiar faces, some faces we haven't seen for a while.

  7. It's great to see friends, old and new.

  8. We are a couple of weeks out from Easter.

  9. And so for the next few weeks we are going to be looking at various portions of scripture that help us think about Easter.

  10. If you are new to church or Christianity, you may think Easter, that's about Easter eggs and chocolate things.

  11. And that's like a western holiday, I get some public holidays.

  12. But actually Easter is all about Jesus of Nazareth.

  13. And about his death on the cross.

  14. What we are going to do over the next few weeks is we are going to work through some passages of scripture in the Old Testament

  15. that show us or that shed light on what Easter is all about.

  16. That help us understand the meaning of Easter.

  17. I don't know if you have ever played this game, maybe when you were a kid.

  18. You shine a spotlight and you make shapes out of your hands, right?

  19. So you are like, oh, it's an elephant and it's a dog and you make these shapes, a shining spotlight

  20. and the people behind you have to see the shadow and guess what animal it is.

  21. Do you know what I'm talking about?

  22. Okay.

  23. In some ways, much of the Old Testament is like that.

  24. There are these stories and these narratives that shine a light

  25. and they kind of give the outline of who Jesus is and what the gospel is all about and Christianity and Easter.

  26. But they don't fill it in detail or in color.

  27. We are going to look at some of these passages of the next few weeks that give a bit of an outline, a shadow

  28. of what Easter is all about in the Old Testament

  29. and how the Old Testament foreshadows Jesus on the cross.

  30. So today we are looking at this very famous passage in the Old Testament, Exodus 32 to 34.

  31. It's a long reading, so thank you Raymond and Soda.

  32. Now the context is this.

  33. Just a few weeks before this event that's taken place,

  34. God has just rescued his people out of Egypt.

  35. This amazing, great deliverance.

  36. By the blood of the Lamb, Passover has happened.

  37. They've been saved and rescued.

  38. And now they are traveling between Egypt and Canaan.

  39. Canaan is this land, this area of land that God promised to Abraham.

  40. He would give his descendants.

  41. And they're traveling in the wilderness that disappeared between Egypt and Canaan.

  42. And on this way, God has provided everything for them.

  43. He's given them food, he's given them water, he's given them clothing.

  44. Everything they've needed, God has provided.

  45. And they come to a place called Mount Sinai, about halfway on the journey.

  46. There's some hills.

  47. And at this place, God tells Moses, the leader, the representative,

  48. to go up on the hill.

  49. And God establishes a covenant,

  50. which is like a special relationship with his people, via Moses.

  51. So Moses is on top of Mount Sinai,

  52. and God establishes this covenant relationship.

  53. And he gives Moses the terms and the conditions of the covenant,

  54. which are largely the Ten Commandments,

  55. plus some other instructions.

  56. And God's people, remember,

  57. the Israelites are not just religious people or spiritual people,

  58. they are God's covenant people.

  59. It means they belong to him.

  60. They've entered into a special dynamic relationship with God.

  61. It's kind of like marriage, right?

  62. Marriage is a form of covenant.

  63. And when you get married, you say to your spouse,

  64. all that I am, with all that I have,

  65. I give myself to you.

  66. I now forsake all others, and I belong to you.

  67. You enter into this very special relationship.

  68. It's like, when I was married to Claire,

  69. my job is to love all people,

  70. to love all male and female,

  71. but I have a special love for Claire,

  72. that is reserved for her, right?

  73. That's a covenant relationship.

  74. And so God's people are his covenant people.

  75. So Moses goes up to Mount Sinai,

  76. receives the Ten Commandments,

  77. the covenant terms and conditions.

  78. But while Moses is up there,

  79. things down below are falling apart.

  80. Because the people of Israel

  81. don't know what's happened to Moses.

  82. He's up on the mountain,

  83. and they start to wonder,

  84. what's happened to the guy?

  85. He's taking a long time.

  86. Maybe he's died.

  87. Maybe something's happened to him.

  88. If something's happened to Moses,

  89. how are we going to follow God?

  90. How are we going to know God's will for us?

  91. And so they start to scheme in the plan.

  92. They come up with a plan.

  93. They go to Aaron, who's the second in charge,

  94. and they say, Aaron,

  95. make a golden idol for us.

  96. It's something that we can bow down and worship.

  97. It's not so much that they want to replace God,

  98. they just want a representative of God.

  99. They want something they can touch,

  100. something they can feel.

  101. It's a bit hard following God

  102. that you don't know where he is or what he's like.

  103. And so they want something tangible to feel and touch

  104. and look to and say,

  105. God is in our midst.

  106. And so they say, Aaron, make us this calf.

  107. And Aaron does that.

  108. He produces this golden calf-like structure,

  109. and they bow down, they worship,

  110. and they celebrate,

  111. and they make a feast.

  112. And what they think is a brilliant idea

  113. soon ends catastrophically.

  114. Look at chapter 32, verse 7.

  115. I'm going to have most of the scripture on the screen,

  116. but you can look at your bulletin.

  117. God says to Moses,

  118. Go down,

  119. for your people,

  120. whom you brought up out of Egypt,

  121. have corrupted themselves.

  122. They've turned aside quickly,

  123. out of the way I commanded them.

  124. They've made themselves a golden calf.

  125. They've worshipped it.

  126. They're sacrificing to it.

  127. They've said,

  128. These are your gods,

  129. O Israel,

  130. who brought you up out of Egypt.

  131. Now therefore,

  132. leave me alone.

  133. Let my wrath burn hot against them,

  134. that I may consume them.

  135. So it's hardly been one month

  136. since they've left Egypt.

  137. They're in the wilderness,

  138. and already things are falling apart.

  139. Their covenant relationship

  140. is in deep jeopardy.

  141. It's been threatened.

  142. Because they haven't even,

  143. you know,

  144. Passover,

  145. and the Exodus,

  146. is fresh in their minds.

  147. It's only a few weeks from there.

  148. And already,

  149. this special relationship

  150. that they've got with God,

  151. is under threat.

  152. It's falling apart.

  153. Their covenant vows,

  154. they've broken them.

  155. And so now the relationship

  156. is under threat.

  157. And it's kind of like,

  158. imagine,

  159. imagine,

  160. you're going to get married,

  161. right?

  162. So you go to Hong Kong Park,

  163. you go to the marriage center there,

  164. and you get dressed up,

  165. and you're in your very best,

  166. and you go in,

  167. you make your appointment,

  168. you go in,

  169. and you're so excited,

  170. and you've got a photographer there,

  171. and the marriage officer comes,

  172. and he leads you in saying your vows,

  173. and you say your vows,

  174. and your spouse says their vows,

  175. and he says,

  176. right,

  177. I now legally pronounce you

  178. before the government of Hong Kong,

  179. you are married,

  180. husband and wife.

  181. And you put your hands over each other,

  182. and you take photos of the rings,

  183. and it's also nice,

  184. and you go outside,

  185. and you say to your wife,

  186. I'm just going to go get the marriage certificate,

  187. just wait here.

  188. And you go inside,

  189. you get the marriage certificate,

  190. and you come out,

  191. and your wife is behind the trees,

  192. with the photographer,

  193. kissing and cuddling,

  194. and the ink hasn't even dried on the paper,

  195. and already the vows are broken.

  196. Or imagine even worse.

  197. I mean,

  198. it sounds funny,

  199. but it's not funny,

  200. right?

  201. You go on honeymoon,

  202. and you say to your husband,

  203. I'll meet you downstairs now,

  204. and you go downstairs,

  205. you're in the Maldives,

  206. you're on honeymoon,

  207. and you see your husband

  208. slipping his phone number

  209. to somebody across the bar,

  210. saying,

  211. call me later.

  212. It's like,

  213. you've just made the covenant.

  214. It's only just begun,

  215. and already you're breaking it.

  216. And that's what's happening with Israel here.

  217. They've only just left Egypt.

  218. Moses is up the mountain,

  219. busy getting the terms and conditions,

  220. and Israel already worshipping other gods.

  221. They're going after other lovers.

  222. And friends,

  223. the Bible says that actually,

  224. in some ways,

  225. this is a picture of what all sin is like.

  226. Sin at a fundamental level,

  227. at a deep heart level,

  228. it's actually a form of idolatry.

  229. It's a form of saying,

  230. there's something else that's going to become,

  231. that's become more important to me than you,

  232. God.

  233. I'm going to,

  234. I'm going to say no to you,

  235. and I'm going to give myself to something else.

  236. Something other than the God who's created us to know him,

  237. and love him,

  238. and be in a relationship with him.

  239. You know,

  240. Martin Luther,

  241. a famous pastor,

  242. 500 years ago,

  243. said,

  244. nobody breaks any of the 10 commandments,

  245. especially the latter half,

  246. like,

  247. do not steal,

  248. do not lie,

  249. do not commit adultery,

  250. do not commit murder.

  251. Nobody breaks any of those,

  252. unless you first break the very first commandment.

  253. And the first commandment is,

  254. don't have any other gods before me.

  255. And he's right,

  256. right?

  257. When you,

  258. when I,

  259. when I do something,

  260. let's say I lie to a colleague,

  261. to protect my reputation,

  262. my reputation.

  263. What am I actually doing?

  264. Something's become more important to me than God in that moment.

  265. What people think of me,

  266. my reputation before others,

  267. is more important to me than God.

  268. So,

  269. so I do that,

  270. because actually,

  271. God is not that important.

  272. Or let's say I,

  273. lie in my tax return,

  274. right?

  275. I tell the government,

  276. this is what I earned this year,

  277. but actually there's a whole lot of other stuff on the side,

  278. I don't really want to tell them.

  279. What's happened?

  280. Something else has become more important to me than Jesus Christ,

  281. than God.

  282. That's actually become my God.

  283. I say,

  284. Lord,

  285. I'm going to look to you,

  286. I'm going to trust in this,

  287. this thing will make me happy.

  288. And so Martin Luther was right,

  289. when he said,

  290. whenever we,

  291. whenever we sin,

  292. when we do these things,

  293. we always try to look to some other God,

  294. whether our reputation,

  295. whether our face,

  296. our financial security,

  297. our pleasure,

  298. our comfort,

  299. something else has taken the place of God.

  300. And we're loving,

  301. and worshipping,

  302. and looking to that thing,

  303. to give us security,

  304. and meaning,

  305. and peace,

  306. and hope.

  307. And that means,

  308. in a way,

  309. all sin is a kind of covenant unfaithfulness.

  310. A kind of covenant breaking.

  311. A way of saying,

  312. God,

  313. I know I should love you,

  314. but I'm going to love something else.

  315. more than you.

  316. This thing has become more important to me than God.

  317. And so,

  318. look what happens in our passage,

  319. chapter 33,

  320. verse 1.

  321. The Lord says to Moses,

  322. okay,

  323. go,

  324. depart from here,

  325. you and the people,

  326. that you brought out of the land of Egypt,

  327. go to the land that I saw to Abraham,

  328. to Isaac,

  329. and Jacob.

  330. In other words,

  331. go to the promised land.

  332. I will send my angel before you,

  333. I will drive out your enemies,

  334. Canaanites,

  335. Amorites,

  336. Hittites,

  337. Perizzites,

  338. et cetera.

  339. But I,

  340. I'm not going to go with you,

  341. lest I consume you along the way,

  342. for you are a stiff-necked people.

  343. In other words,

  344. you are a stubborn people.

  345. So God says,

  346. Moses,

  347. the marriage is over.

  348. The covenant is over.

  349. He says,

  350. you can still go,

  351. and actually,

  352. I will send my angel,

  353. I will help you,

  354. I will send my blessing ahead of you,

  355. I'll clear out the way,

  356. you can go and live in the promised land,

  357. but I'm not going to be with you.

  358. This relationship,

  359. I'm no longer going to be your people,

  360. you're not going to,

  361. you're not going to be my people,

  362. I'm not going to be your God.

  363. This relationship is over.

  364. It's kind of like,

  365. in a marriage,

  366. right?

  367. Someone says,

  368. this marriage is over.

  369. You can keep the house,

  370. the furniture we bought,

  371. you can keep that,

  372. the engagement ring,

  373. you can have that,

  374. but I'm not moving in with you.

  375. Our relationship is,

  376. is over.

  377. And the reason is,

  378. he says,

  379. if we go on this journey together,

  380. and you Israelites,

  381. keep on behaving like that,

  382. my justice,

  383. my integrity,

  384. my commitment to my holiness,

  385. is going to destroy you.

  386. Because the consequences for sin,

  387. is always death and destruction.

  388. Always.

  389. You know,

  390. friends,

  391. when we sin,

  392. when I sin,

  393. let me use myself as an example,

  394. somewhere deep in my heart,

  395. I'm always doing a cost-benefit analysis.

  396. Okay,

  397. this is the cost,

  398. this is the benefit,

  399. okay,

  400. it's worth it,

  401. I'm going to go for it,

  402. right?

  403. Now that happens at a deep subconscious level.

  404. Friends,

  405. sin always,

  406. always,

  407. costs us more than we expect.

  408. Always costs more than you bargained for.

  409. And the consequences are always,

  410. death and destruction.

  411. And so God says,

  412. this is not going to work.

  413. This relationship needs to come to an end.

  414. Now here's a quick question,

  415. on the side note,

  416. question for us.

  417. I wonder how we would feel,

  418. if God said this to us.

  419. If God said to us,

  420. this morning,

  421. you can go,

  422. and have all of my blessings,

  423. I will send my angel before you,

  424. I will clear the path to you,

  425. I will open up the way,

  426. I will,

  427. you can have all my blessings,

  428. you can have heaven,

  429. and everything you want,

  430. but I'm not going to be there.

  431. How would we feel?

  432. I think if we're honest,

  433. we'd be tempted to say,

  434. that sounds like a great deal.

  435. I mean,

  436. I can get all the good life,

  437. all the blessings of God's favor,

  438. and I don't even need to keep this relationship with God.

  439. That sounds like a good deal.

  440. But actually friends,

  441. it's a terrible deal.

  442. And look what happens here,

  443. verse 4.

  444. When the people heard this disastrous word,

  445. they mourned,

  446. they grieved.

  447. Because this is terrible,

  448. terrible news.

  449. It's traumatic.

  450. God says,

  451. I am no longer going to be your people.

  452. You are no longer going to be my God.

  453. Sorry.

  454. I think I've got that wrong the whole morning,

  455. right?

  456. You are not going to be my people.

  457. I'm not going to be your God.

  458. Now they are without God.

  459. They are without hope.

  460. They are without purpose.

  461. They are without meaning.

  462. They are without identity.

  463. They are without security.

  464. They are without peace.

  465. In a world,

  466. bobbing along on their own.

  467. Without God.

  468. Friends,

  469. if you're not a Christian this morning,

  470. this may sound really strange to you.

  471. But I want you to see that

  472. the divine being,

  473. who created everything that exists,

  474. that we call God,

  475. He created you

  476. to know Him,

  477. and love Him,

  478. and be in relationship with Him,

  479. and to experience peace,

  480. and security,

  481. and identity,

  482. and meaning,

  483. and wholeness,

  484. in relationship with Him.

  485. And just because you don't believe in Him,

  486. doesn't mean that He doesn't believe in you.

  487. And that He doesn't have a purpose for you.

  488. This is what it means to be a human being.

  489. To be in relationship with the God

  490. who made you to know Him.

  491. And yet the problem is,

  492. things always get in the way.

  493. Things always get in the way.

  494. And so,

  495. look what Israel do.

  496. They grieve,

  497. and they mourn.

  498. It's like somebody has died.

  499. Because actually,

  500. the most important thing about them has died.

  501. Their relationship with God has died.

  502. And so,

  503. Moses,

  504. in the rest of the chapter,

  505. Moses begins to intercede.

  506. Look at verse 12.

  507. He goes,

  508. and he says,

  509. Lord,

  510. we need you.

  511. He says,

  512. God,

  513. us going into the promised land,

  514. enjoying all of the good life,

  515. without you being there,

  516. is meaningless.

  517. There's no point.

  518. We are your people.

  519. That's our identity.

  520. That's who we are.

  521. If we go in,

  522. and you're not with us,

  523. there's no point in us even going in.

  524. God,

  525. this is who we are.

  526. This is what it means to be your people.

  527. And so,

  528. eventually,

  529. God says,

  530. okay,

  531. fine.

  532. I will make it work.

  533. Look at verse 17.

  534. The Lord said to Moses,

  535. this very thing that you have spoken,

  536. or that you have asked for,

  537. I will do for you.

  538. For you have found favor in my sight.

  539. God says,

  540. okay,

  541. Moses,

  542. I will find a way to still keep my covenant relationship with my covenant people.

  543. Now,

  544. the question is this.

  545. How can this work?

  546. God says,

  547. I can't go into the promised land with you because of your sin.

  548. Okay?

  549. You are stubborn people.

  550. I can't go in.

  551. The relationship is broken.

  552. As a commitment to my own holiness,

  553. I will consume you.

  554. Listen,

  555. your sin and your rejection of me,

  556. your rejection of your covenant unfaithfulness,

  557. means that I can't go in with you.

  558. But then he says,

  559. but I will go in with you.

  560. So,

  561. how do these two things come together?

  562. The other way of saying it is,

  563. how can God both take our sin and covenant breaking seriously,

  564. and yet overlook it at the same time?

  565. There seems to be this paradox involved somehow.

  566. And friends,

  567. this is still a question for us today.

  568. Because,

  569. this isn't just theoretical or philosophical.

  570. This is deeply practical.

  571. Because this week,

  572. friends,

  573. you and I are going to sin.

  574. This week,

  575. you and I are going to do things.

  576. Other things are going to become more important to us than Jesus Christ.

  577. Friends,

  578. friends,

  579. this week,

  580. we are going to sacrifice our relationship with God

  581. on the altar of comfort,

  582. or financial security,

  583. or pleasure,

  584. or people pleasing.

  585. You and I are going to break relationship with God

  586. and worship other gods.

  587. And so,

  588. how do we maintain a relationship with God?

  589. Why doesn't God just say,

  590. okay,

  591. fine,

  592. go your own way,

  593. do your own thing?

  594. How is this,

  595. how is this going to work?

  596. And it seems to me like Moses himself

  597. is grappling with this question.

  598. Because,

  599. in verse 17,

  600. God says,

  601. fine,

  602. I will go with you.

  603. I will still maintain relationship.

  604. And the next verse,

  605. verse 18,

  606. Moses says,

  607. God,

  608. show me your glory.

  609. Show me your glory.

  610. Now,

  611. the word glory,

  612. sorry if I'm in the way,

  613. the word glory literally means weight.

  614. Weightiness.

  615. But the idea is substance.

  616. Okay?

  617. If something has a lot of glory,

  618. it has substance to it,

  619. weight to it.

  620. What Moses is saying is,

  621. he's saying,

  622. God,

  623. I want to see the substance of who you are.

  624. I don't want to just see your,

  625. I don't want to know you superficially.

  626. I don't want to just see the facade,

  627. the outside.

  628. I want to know the substance of who you are.

  629. God,

  630. I don't see how these things can come together.

  631. You are holy and righteous and perfect,

  632. and yet you are forgiving of your people.

  633. Show me who you are.

  634. Show me how these things work.

  635. And so God says,

  636. I will show you my glory.

  637. Verse 19,

  638. I will make all my goodness pass before you.

  639. I will proclaim to you my name.

  640. Chapter 34,

  641. Verse 5.

  642. So the Lord descended in the cloud

  643. and stood before him there

  644. and proclaimed his name.

  645. The Lord,

  646. the Lord,

  647. a God merciful and gracious,

  648. slow to anger

  649. and abounding in steadfast love

  650. and faithfulness.

  651. Keeping steadfast love

  652. for a thousand generations.

  653. Forgiving,

  654. iniquity,

  655. and transgressions,

  656. and sin.

  657. But who will by no means

  658. clear the guilty.

  659. Visiting the iniquity of the fathers

  660. on the children,

  661. and the children's children,

  662. the third and fourth generation.

  663. So Moses says,

  664. God,

  665. I want to know you

  666. for who you really are.

  667. Show me.

  668. And he says,

  669. this is who I am.

  670. And he doesn't show Moses a picture.

  671. He doesn't say,

  672. okay,

  673. you'll see me.

  674. He describes his truest attributes.

  675. And how does he describe himself?

  676. Merciful and gracious.

  677. Abounding in steadfast love

  678. and forgiveness.

  679. To a thousand generations

  680. forgiving,

  681. transgression,

  682. iniquity,

  683. and sin.

  684. And yet,

  685. who by no means

  686. will clear the guilty.

  687. Now in a sense,

  688. that doesn't really answer our question,

  689. does it?

  690. The problem still persists.

  691. How is it that God is gracious

  692. and merciful

  693. and yet doesn't clear the guilty?

  694. How is it that he forgives sin

  695. but he doesn't clear the sin?

  696. How does that work together?

  697. Next week,

  698. Niels is going to answer the question.

  699. Kind of.

  700. I'm not going to give us

  701. the full answer today.

  702. Next week,

  703. we're going to look at half of it

  704. and then the following week,

  705. Oscar is going to tell us

  706. the full answer,

  707. okay?

  708. But,

  709. I want us to feel the tension.

  710. But,

  711. in this passage,

  712. there are two things

  713. that I think to look at

  714. that give us a clue.

  715. Two shadows

  716. that are going to paint

  717. the outline of the picture.

  718. What happens between

  719. chapter 32

  720. when God's judgment comes

  721. and chapter 34

  722. where God renews the covenant.

  723. Because in chapter 34,

  724. God reinstates the Ten Commandments.

  725. Something,

  726. two dynamic things happen

  727. in between these two chapters.

  728. The first one

  729. is the people do something.

  730. The people do something.

  731. The first thing is

  732. the people repent.

  733. Look at chapter 33,

  734. verse 3 to 5 with me.

  735. God says,

  736. Go to the land

  737. for the land of milk and honey,

  738. but I will not go with you

  739. lest I consume you along the way

  740. for you are a stubborn people.

  741. Verse 4,

  742. When the people heard

  743. this disastrous word,

  744. they mourned,

  745. and no one put on his ornaments.

  746. For the Lord had said to Moses,

  747. Say to the people of Israel,

  748. you are a stubborn people.

  749. If for a single moment

  750. I will go with you,

  751. I will consume you.

  752. Verse 6,

  753. Therefore the people of Israel

  754. stripped themselves

  755. of their ornaments

  756. from Mount Horeb onward.

  757. They did that.

  758. Now,

  759. the ornaments here,

  760. it's kind of jewelry,

  761. it's also maybe

  762. special clothing,

  763. it's special garments

  764. that they're wearing.

  765. Most commentators think

  766. what this has to do with

  767. is some kind of idol worship.

  768. There are things

  769. that are like maybe

  770. bracelets or bangles

  771. or rings or earrings.

  772. There are things

  773. that they are keeping with them

  774. that help them worship

  775. the various gods

  776. and the idols around them.

  777. In Genesis earlier on,

  778. Jacob,

  779. who is the grandson of Abraham,

  780. at one point

  781. he encounters God

  782. and he renews

  783. the covenant with God.

  784. And he says to all

  785. his family,

  786. his wives and his children

  787. and his servants,

  788. take off your ornaments.

  789. And they dig a big hole,

  790. they bury them in the ground

  791. and they move on.

  792. It's kind of their way

  793. of recommitting themselves

  794. to God.

  795. The same thing

  796. is happening here.

  797. God says,

  798. I'm not going to be with you

  799. and the people mourn,

  800. they grieve.

  801. And so they take off

  802. their rings to this God

  803. and that God,

  804. they throw them down

  805. and God says,

  806. remove them

  807. and says they strip

  808. themselves of them.

  809. It's kind of like

  810. they can't get rid of them

  811. quick enough.

  812. I don't know if you've ever

  813. walked in on somebody

  814. who's doing something wrong,

  815. right?

  816. And they can't get away

  817. from the situation

  818. quick enough, right?

  819. They're on their computer

  820. looking at something

  821. they shouldn't be

  822. and they quickly

  823. close the computer

  824. or you tell your kid,

  825. don't eat the cookie

  826. and you walk in

  827. they're eating the cookie,

  828. you know,

  829. and it's like,

  830. they couldn't,

  831. they can't get rid of it

  832. quick enough.

  833. That's what they're doing here.

  834. They're stripping themselves,

  835. they're taking off their chains,

  836. they're getting rid of

  837. the ornaments.

  838. They're grieving,

  839. they're mourning,

  840. they're repenting.

  841. It says,

  842. verse 6,

  843. they stripped themselves

  844. from Mount Horeb onwards.

  845. In other words,

  846. they left them behind

  847. and they moved on.

  848. And in the Old Testament,

  849. this,

  850. this passage here

  851. where God says

  852. He is gracious

  853. and merciful,

  854. slow to anger

  855. and abounding in love,

  856. this verse is

  857. kind of like a creed.

  858. It becomes a statement

  859. that in the Old Testament

  860. they say again

  861. and again and again.

  862. But often,

  863. it's used

  864. to call people

  865. to repentance.

  866. So for instance,

  867. in Joel chapter 2,

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  868. Joel is calling God's people

  869. back to himself.

  870. And he quotes this passage,

  871. look at what he says here.

  872. He says,

  873. Yet even now declares the Lord,

  874. return to me with your heart,

  875. come back to me.

  876. Why?

  877. Return to the Lord.

  878. Why?

  879. For He is gracious

  880. and merciful,

  881. slow to anger

  882. and abounding

  883. in steadfast love.

  884. And that's the point here.

  885. Who are those

  886. that God forgives?

  887. It's those

  888. who come to Him

  889. in faith and repentance.

  890. It's those who

  891. turn to Him.

  892. Friends,

  893. it's not the perfect

  894. because none of us

  895. are perfect.

  896. It's not those

  897. who only commit small sins

  898. that God forgives

  899. because all sin

  900. is deadly serious.

  901. Friends,

  902. who does God forgive

  903. and is gracious towards?

  904. It's not those

  905. who can pay God back somehow

  906. because,

  907. friends,

  908. none of us

  909. can pay God back.

  910. So who is it

  911. that God forgives

  912. and is gracious

  913. and merciful to?

  914. It's those

  915. who see Him

  916. as a gracious

  917. and merciful God.

  918. It's those

  919. who turn to Him

  920. in faith and repentance.

  921. It's those

  922. who see themselves

  923. as sinners

  924. in need of grace

  925. and say,

  926. God,

  927. have mercy on me,

  928. a sinner.

  929. Friends,

  930. none of us

  931. are perfect.

  932. None of us

  933. only commit small sins.

  934. None of us

  935. can pay God back.

  936. But all of us,

  937. all of us

  938. can get on our knees

  939. and say,

  940. God,

  941. I need you.

  942. Friends,

  943. have you done that?

  944. Why don't you do that today?

  945. Don't leave this place.

  946. Why don't you draw near

  947. to the living God,

  948. gracious and merciful,

  949. slow to anger

  950. and abounding

  951. in steadfast love,

  952. forgiving iniquity

  953. and sin

  954. to a thousand generations.

  955. This God is so good.

  956. So the first thing

  957. is the people repent.

  958. But there's a second thing

  959. that's going on here.

  960. And that is,

  961. let me not give it away.

  962. What is the determining factor

  963. between chapter 32

  964. and chapter 34?

  965. There's one determining factor.

  966. There's something

  967. that's going on here.

  968. It's a man, right?

  969. There's one person

  970. that's involved.

  971. Who is it?

  972. It's Moses.

  973. And what does Moses do?

  974. He mediates

  975. for the people.

  976. Moses stands in the gap

  977. and mediates

  978. on behalf of the people

  979. before God.

  980. The big difference here

  981. is that there is a mediator

  982. who is righteous

  983. and God-fearing,

  984. who is full of God's favor,

  985. who can intercede for them

  986. and plead on their behalf.

  987. Listen to Psalm 106.

  988. It describes this passage

  989. and it describes it so well.

  990. It says this,

  991. The people of Israel

  992. made a calf at Horeb.

  993. They worshipped

  994. the metal image.

  995. They exchanged

  996. the glory of God

  997. for an image

  998. of an ox

  999. that eats grass.

  1000. I mean,

1001. that's meant to be humorous,

  1002. right?

  1003. They forgot God,

  1004. their Savior,

1005. who had done great things

  1006. for them in Egypt.

  1007. Therefore,

  1008. He said,

  1009. He would destroy them

  1010. had not Moses,

  1011. His chosen one,

  1012. stood in the breach,

1013. that means stood in the gap

  1014. before Him

1015. to turn away God's wrath

  1016. from destroying them.

  1017. God's wrath

  1018. would have destroyed them,

1019. but there was a man

1020. who stood in the gap

  1021. who said,

  1022. God,

  1023. please,

  1024. please God,

  1025. be merciful and gracious.

1026. He stood on their behalf

  1027. and interceded

  1028. and prayed for them

  1029. and pleaded

  1030. and petitioned God

  1031. on their behalf.

  1032. They had a mediator.

  1033. And you notice

  1034. how many times

  1035. the passage spoke about

1036. Moses has found favor with God.

1037. Let me just read a few of them to you.

  1038. 33 verse 12,

  1039. Lord,

1040. you have said to me,

1041. you have found favor in my sight.

  1042. Now therefore,

1043. since I have found favor in your sight,

  1044. God,

1045. please show me your ways.

  1046. Verse 17,

1047. the Lord said to Moses,

1048. this very thing that you ask,

1049. I will do for you.

  1050. Why?

1051. For you have found favor in my sight.

  1052. 34 verse 9,

  1053. the Lord,

  1054. then Moses said,

  1055. God,

1056. since I have found favor in your sight,

  1057. please,

1058. go in the midst of us.

1059. the passage again and again and again

  1060. says this,

  1061. the people are stubborn

  1062. and stiff-necked,

1063. but there is one person

1064. who has found favor in God's sight.

  1065. There is one man

  1066. who is God-fearing

  1067. and honorable

  1068. and righteous

1069. and wants to do the right thing.

1070. And God looks upon that man

  1071. and says,

1072. on the basis of your goodness,

1073. I will treat them well.

  1074. Do you see that?

  1075. Friends,

1076. do you see what God

1077. is wanting us to see here?

1078. What you're not meant to see

  1079. is this,

1080. if only we have a good

  1081. and righteous pastor,

1082. our church will go well.

  1083. Friends,

1084. that's not what you're meant to see here.

1085. What you're meant to see here

  1086. is this,

  1087. that we,

  1088. just like Israel,

  1089. are stiff-necked

  1090. and stubborn,

  1091. prone to sin,

  1092. covenant-breaking idolatry,

1093. and yet we have a mediator.

1094. And his name is not Kevin.

  1095. His name is Jesus.

  1096. There is a mediator,

  1097. one who is righteous

1098. and finds favor in God's sight

  1099. and is always God-fearing

1100. and always does the right thing

1101. and is just and holy

1102. and he could stand in the gap,

  1103. in the bridge

1104. between a holy and righteous God

1105. and a stubborn and sinful people.

1106. He could stand in the gap

  1107. and say,

  1108. God,

1109. because I have found favor in your sight,

  1110. treat my people well.

1111. You could take Psalm 106

1112. and substitute Jesus' name in

  1113. for Moses.

1114. Look at how it reads.

  1115. The people,

1116. they exchanged the glory of God

1117. for false gods and idols.

  1118. They forgot their God,

  1119. their Savior,

1120. He who had done great things for them.

  1121. Therefore,

1122. God would have destroyed them

  1123. had not Jesus,

  1124. His chosen one,

1125. stood in the gap before Him

1126. and turned God's wrath away.

  1127. Friends,

  1128. this is Jesus,

  1129. our mediator,

  1130. our advocate,

  1131. who petitions God

  1132. on our behalf.

  1133. And if you know

  1134. the book of Romans

  1135. in the New Testament,

  1136. Romans is all about

  1137. the good news

1138. of the gospel of Jesus.

  1139. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1140. does that.

  1141. Paul quotes Psalm 106

  1142. except he substitutes

  1143. Jesus' name in

  1144. for Moses.

1145. Listen to how he writes it.

  1146. He says,

1147. For the wrath of God

  1148. is revealed from heaven

  1149. against all ungodliness

  1150. and unrighteousness

  1151. of mankind.

1152. For though they should have

  1153. known God,

1154. they did not honor Him

1155. as God who gave thanks to Him.

  1156. They exchanged the glory

  1157. of the immortal,

  1158. eternal God

  1159. for images

  1160. and other gods.

1161. For there is no distinction

1162. for all people have sinned

  1163. and fall short

1164. of the glory of God.

  1165. And yet,

  1166. all people are able

  1167. to be justified,

  1168. that means forgiven,

  1169. declared not guilty

  1170. through the redemption

1171. that is in Jesus Christ,

  1172. the eternal sacrifice

  1173. for our sins.

  1174. Friends,

  1175. do you see what's

  1176. happening here?

  1177. In Exodus 32 and 34,

  1178. we have a picture,

1179. a shadow of the gospel.

  1180. This is Christianity.

1181. This is our hope this week.

  1182. That in Jesus Christ,

  1183. we have a mediator,

  1184. an advocate,

1185. one who stood in the gap

  1186. for us,

1187. one who didn't just go

1188. into the tent of meeting

  1189. and petition God,

  1190. one who went into

1191. the very throne room of God,

  1192. Jesus Christ,

1193. the Son of God Himself,

  1194. who could intercede

  1195. and plead for us.

  1196. Friends,

1197. Jesus went to the cross,

  1198. He died,

  1199. He shed His blood,

  1200. He paid the price,

1201. so that now God's wrath

1202. was poured out on Him

  1203. and not on us.

  1204. Friends,

1205. no one can be saved

  1206. or forgiven

1207. based on what they do.

1208. We are all too sinful.

1209. Maybe it's your first time

  1210. you've ever stepped in a church.

  1211. Maybe you've been here

  1212. a thousand times

  1213. with you either

  1214. passed in the front

  1215. or you're hung over

  1216. at the back.

  1217. Friends,

1218. none of us can save ourselves.

1219. But we have a Savior,

  1220. a mediator,

  1221. an advocate,

  1222. Jesus,

  1223. the Son of God,

  1224. who goes before us.

1225. And so here's the question,

  1226. is He your mediator?

  1227. Is He your Savior?

1228. Have you come to Him

  1229. in faith and repentance

1230. or are you still trying

  1231. to save yourself?

  1232. Friends,

  1233. where are you looking

  1234. for hope,

  1235. for redemption,

  1236. for meaning,

  1237. for purpose,

  1238. for joy,

  1239. for peace,

  1240. for security

  1241. this week?

1242. The things of this world

  1243. will fail you.

1244. They will let you down

1245. and they will cut you off

  1246. from the living God,

1247. the God who made you

  1248. to know Him

  1249. and find those things

  1250. in Him.

  1251. Friends,

  1252. turn to Jesus.

  1253. He is the one

  1254. that we need.

  1255. He is the one

  1256. that I need.

  1257. He is the one

  1258. that we all need.

1259. In a few minutes time,

1260. we're going to sing this song

1261. and I want to leave you

  1262. with these words.

  1263. Jeremy,

1264. you want to come on up.

  1265. Listen to these words

  1266. as we close.

  1267. When Satan tends me

  1268. to despair

  1269. and tells me

  1270. of the guilt within,

  1271. I put out look

  1272. and see Him there

  1273. who made an end

  1274. to all my sin.

  1275. Because the sinless

  1276. Savior died,

  1277. my sinful soul

  1278. is counted free.

  1279. For God,

  1280. the just,

  1281. the holy,

  1282. the righteous,

  1283. the pure,

  1284. is satisfied

  1285. to look on Him

  1286. and pardon me.

  1287. Let's pray together.

  1288. Oh Lord Jesus,

  1289. the gospel,

  1290. the Bible

1291. is so full of the good news,

  1292. of the wonder

  1293. of what you did

  1294. on the cross.

  1295. Jesus,

  1296. thank you so much

  1297. that you are

  1298. our perfect mediator,

  1299. our perfect interceder,

  1300. the one who stood

  1301. in the gap

  1302. on our behalf.

  1303. Jesus,

  1304. thank you for coming

  1305. and not only coming,

  1306. for dying

  1307. and in our place

  1308. that we can

  1309. know you,

1310. that we can be reconciled,

  1311. that our current

  1312. relationship

  1313. can be restored.

  1314. God,

1315. I pray for each one of us

1316. to pray that we will

  1317. go from this place

  1318. this week

  1319. deeply secure,

  1320. satisfied,

  1321. full of you,

1322. our eyes fixed on you.

  1323. And God,

  1324. for those of us

  1325. who don't know you,

  1326. oh Spirit of God,

  1327. won't you

1328. draw us near to you,

1329. give us faith in our hearts

  1330. that we can

  1331. come to you.

  1332. I pray these things

  1333. in your good

  1334. and your gracious name.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Amen.
