  1. Our Father, thank you that you are the speaking God. We are not on silent terms with you.

  2. Thank you that we can know you. Thank you that we can know Jesus and see his glory in the words of Scripture.

  3. Pray that you would speak to each one of us, to our hearts, right now. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  4. Great. So, it's nearly Easter, and that is what we're thinking about.

  5. In two weeks, we're celebrating the heart of our faith, especially the cross, right?

  6. You go to a church building, and there's crosses, and, you know, Christian women, they wear necklaces or earrings.

  7. It's always a cross, right? It's not like a manger or an empty tomb.

  8. The cross is the heart of our faith, and in church, we remember that on Good Friday, in a moment, we'll have the Lord's Supper, all those things.

  9. And that's not just our idea, right? Jesus wants that. He says, do this in remembrance of me.

  10. Although, again, you may wonder, why? Why is this such a big thing?

  11. So, later this month, it's our anniversary for me and EJ, 22 years. Great.

  12. But, you know, it's not that special.

  13. But we'll probably do something on that day.

  14. But it's not like every week we go and remember how great our wedding was, right?

  15. That would be weird. Isn't it much more just about our normal relationship?

  16. And, yeah, we got married that day. That was the start.

  17. But, you know, why is that, you know, it's not that important.

  18. And yet, the cross, we keep going on and on about.

  19. Maybe you're here, you're not a Christian, you may wonder, why is the cross such a big thing that you keep coming back to it all the time?

  20. Well, God thinks it's important, and that's why we are having this series.

  21. Not just the New Testament, but the Old Testament.

  22. The first three quarters of the Bible, God spent so much time, you know, telling about the cross, predicting it, foreshadowing it.

  23. And today, we're looking at one of the main ways, yeah, in Leviticus, a special day called the Day of Atonement that is such a clear foreshadowing of what Jesus would do.

  24. The Day of Atonement, or as you may have heard of the Hebrew name, Yom Kippur, it's the heart of, yeah, the relationship that Israel has with God.

  25. And why? Well, what does atonement mean?

  26. It's kind of like a new English word that was invented for the Bible.

  27. It basically comes from at-one-ment.

  28. It is bringing you and God together again.

  29. Reconciling you so that you're at-one.

  30. Maybe we should call it at-one-ment.

  31. That is what it does.

  32. Because, as we heard earlier in the service, our problem is our sin.

  33. That has always been the problem, right?

  34. The fact that we have rebelled against God, and so we are not together.

  35. We are not at-one.

  36. That's why Adam and Eve were, you know, had to leave the garden.

  37. And we've seen the past few months in the Bible story how hard it is for people to get back to God.

  38. Because God is a holy God.

  39. And we are guilty sinners, and that just doesn't go together.

  40. And that is not just a kind of a system.

  41. The problem, as we saw last week, is God's character.

  42. God revealed, you know, He is a God of mercy and justice.

  43. A God of gracious and compassionate, but who will by no means clear the guilty.

  44. Mercy.

  45. And both of them are actually good things, right?

  46. Mercy is a good thing.

  47. Justice is a really good thing.

  48. You see some of the atrocities on the news.

  49. And it makes your blood boil what people do.

  50. And you want justice, right?

  51. It's a good thing to want justice.

  52. The only problem is that we are the criminals.

  53. We are the ones who have lived our lives apart from God.

  54. We've lived for ourselves and not for our Maker.

  55. And we haven't lived in relationship with Him.

  56. And, yeah, therefore we can't be with Him.

  57. Because, yeah, we deserve punishment.

  58. If we get too close, we die.

  59. That's basically the problem that we've seen.

  60. How can we be at one with God?

  61. Well, this ritual today is what we're going to look at to help us see what's involved.

  62. And it's a ritual.

  63. If you know the Old Testament, it's full of rituals.

  64. And we don't really do that anymore.

  65. And so it seems a bit weird.

  66. I mean, we wish we could just act it out.

  67. But that's not easy to do.

  68. But, you know, rituals are powerful.

  69. We don't often think about it.

  70. But let me give an example.

  71. So, for example, how about standing?

  72. So, if I was in this building and King Charles comes in, my guess is I would stand up, right?

  73. Why would you stand up?

  74. Because, well, the king is here.

  75. And, you know, you want to pay respect to the king.

  76. That is kind of my belief that this is the king results in action.

  77. But it also works the other way.

  78. Action kind of shapes our belief.

  79. So, in a moment, we sang songs and we all stood up.

  80. That's not just a convention.

  81. Actually, that, in a way, teaches us something, right?

  82. It makes you, you know, because we're singing to the king, right?

  83. We give honor and praise.

  84. And so we stand up.

  85. But, actually, if you do that, you will start to think more respectfully of God, right?

  86. It shapes you that this really is the king and we should stand up.

  87. And now, I've tried it at home.

  88. If I slouch on the sofa and I try to sing a hymn, I can't.

  89. It just feels disrespectful, right?

  90. So, rituals shape our beliefs.

  91. And that is why God gives all these rituals in the Old Testament.

  92. The people, they've just been rescued.

  93. They don't know God very well.

  94. They need to know him more.

  95. And so, all these rituals to just help people know God more.

  96. To know who he is, who we are, and how we can be at one with him.

  97. And so, with that out of the way, let's listen to this central ritual of the Old Testament religion.

  98. And CK is going to come and read for us.

  99. Thank you, Niels, for that introduction.

  100. So, church, if we could turn to Leviticus chapter 16.

    Leviticus 16 chapter mention

  101. Follow along in your bulletin board, or you can also refer to the screen.

  102. Starting in verse 1, we read,

  103. These are the holy garments.

  104. Aaron shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering,

  105. and one ram for a burnt offering.

  106. Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself,

  107. and shall make atonement for himself and for his house.

  108. Then he shall take the two goats,

  109. and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

  110. Then Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats,

  111. one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for Azazel.

  112. And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord,

  113. and use it as a sin offering.

  114. But the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel,

  115. shall be presented alive before the Lord,

  116. to make the atonement over it,

  117. that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.

  118. Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself,

  119. and shall make atonement for himself and for his house.

  120. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself,

  121. and he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the Lord,

  122. and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small.

  123. And he shall bring it inside the veil,

  124. and put the incense on the fire before the Lord,

  125. that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony,

  126. so that he does not die.

  127. And he shall take some of the blood of the bull,

  128. and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side.

  129. And in front of the mercy seat,

  130. he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

  131. Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people,

  132. and bring its blood inside the veil,

  133. and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull,

  134. sprinkling it over the mercy seat,

  135. and in front of the mercy seat.

  136. Thus, he shall make atonement for the holy place,

  137. because of the uncleanness of the people of Israel,

  138. and because of their transgressions,

  139. all their sins.

  140. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting,

  141. which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleanness.

  142. No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the holy place,

  143. until he comes out and has made atonement for himself,

  144. and for his house,

  145. and for all the assembly of Israel.

  146. Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the Lord,

  147. and make atonement for it,

  148. and shall take some of the blood of the bull,

  149. and some of the blood of the goat,

  150. and put it on the horns of the altar all around.

  151. And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times,

  152. and cleans it,

  153. and consecrate it from the uncleanliness of the people of Israel.

  154. And when he has made an end of atoning for the holy place,

  155. and the tent of meeting,

  156. and the altar,

  157. he shall present the live goat.

  158. And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat,

  159. and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel,

  160. and all their transgressions,

  161. all their sins.

  162. And he shall put on them the head of the goat,

  163. and send it away into the wilderness

  164. by the hand of a man who is in readiness.

  165. The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area,

  166. and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.

  167. Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting,

  168. and shall take off the linen garments that he put on

  169. when he went into the holy place,

  170. and shall leave them there.

  171. And he shall bathe his body in water in a holy place,

  172. and put on his garments,

  173. and come out and offer his burnt offering,

  174. and the burnt offering of the people,

  175. and make atonement for himself and for the people.

  176. And the fat of the sin offering he shall burn on the altar.

  177. And when he who lets the goat go to Azazel

  178. shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water,

  179. and afterward he may come into the camp.

  180. And the bull for the sin offering,

  181. and the goat for the sin offering,

  182. whose blood was brought into their flesh,

  183. and their dung shall be burned up with fire.

  184. And he who burns them all shall wash his clothes

  185. and bathe his body in water,

  186. and afterward he may come into the camp.

  187. And it shall be a statute to you forever,

  188. that in the seventh month,

  189. on the tenth day of the month,

  190. you shall afflict yourselves and do no work,

  191. either the native or the stranger

  192. who sojourns among you.

  193. For on this day shall atonement be made for you

  194. to cleanse you.

  195. You shall be clean before the Lord from all your sins.

  196. It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you,

  197. and you shall afflict yourselves.

  198. It is a statute forever.

  199. And the priest who is anointed and consecrated

  200. as priest in his father's place

  201. shall make atonement,

  202. wearing the holy linen garments.

  203. He shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary,

  204. and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting

  205. and for the altar.

  206. And he shall make atonement for the priests

  207. of all the people of the assembly.

  208. And this shall be a statute forever for you,

  209. that atonement may be made for the people of Israel

  210. once in the year because of all their sins.

  211. And Aaron did as the Lord commanded Moses.

  212. This is the word of God.

  213. Wow.

  214. Thanks, CK.

  215. So that's a really long reading, right?

  216. A really long ritual.

  217. Because, yeah, why such so long?

  218. Why so much detail?

  219. Well, let me just go through it and try to explain it,

  220. and then I hope we can see what's going on.

  221. First, let me talk about some of the basic elements.

  222. Well, what's going on?

  223. First, the heart of it is a sacrifice, right?

  224. The heart of this ritual is a substitutionary sacrifice,

  225. an animal dying in your place.

  226. Because the problem was God's mercy and justice,

  227. but a sacrifice solves that, right?

  228. Because, you know, something dies, right?

  229. There's a death penalty,

  230. so justice is satisfied,

  231. but it's not you who dies.

  232. And that's mercy.

  233. So you have mercy and justice together in a sacrifice.

  234. And so that was the heart of the system,

  235. not just of this day, right?

  236. You read the Old Testament,

  237. and there were daily sacrifices,

  238. and weekly sacrifices,

  239. and monthly sacrifices,

  240. and every festival had sacrifices,

  241. and, you know, personal sacrifices.

  242. You were unclean, but you've become clean.

  243. You offer a sacrifice.

  244. You've sinned, and you realize that you offer a sacrifice.

  245. No wonder that the whole tribe was there

  246. to just take care of the temple system.

  247. There were so many sacrifices.

  248. But today is really special

  249. because of the second element,

  250. which is God's presence, right?

  251. You want to be reconciled to God.

  252. In a way, you need to do that in person.

  253. So you need to be,

  254. you need to actually go to God.

  255. And this was the only day that actually

  256. someone went into God's presence.

  257. So here's like a cut through of the tabernacle,

  258. the kind of like the temple that was in the camp.

  259. That's kind of where God lived

  260. among all their tents.

  261. And of course, there was the outside,

  262. and there was the court,

  263. and there was this tent,

  264. but it had two parts.

  265. There was the first part.

  266. On the left is the holy place,

  267. and the priest could go there.

  268. But then there was this special area at the end

  269. with a curtain separating it off,

  270. and that's where the Ark of the Covenant was.

  271. That's where God lived,

  272. and no one could go there

  273. apart from this one day that we just read about.

  274. So this is the day that someone actually

  275. brings a sacrifice into God's presence.

  276. All the other sacrifices,

  277. they didn't really go into God's presence,

  278. so they were more just an action, right?

  279. I've sinned, I offer a sacrifice,

  280. I'm saying,

  281. Lord, I should have died for this.

  282. You're confessing.

  283. But this is the foundation

  284. that day of kind of all the other sacrifices.

  285. And then the third thing that you need

  286. is a mediator.

  287. We saw that last week if you were here,

  288. right, someone who can actually bring

  289. something to God,

  290. because we are sinful,

  291. we can't.

  292. There's a mediator,

  293. someone who can go into God's presence.

  294. And here that's Aaron,

  295. the high priest,

  296. the brother of Moses,

  297. and then after that his descendants.

  298. And just to say,

  299. as we think about sacrifices,

  300. all of this is a gift of grace.

  301. This is all about grace.

  302. Because it is all comes,

  303. instituted by God.

  304. And sometimes in religions,

  305. you know,

  306. sacrifice is what we do, right?

  307. There's a God,

  308. and he is not giving me the weather I want,

  309. so I do a sacrifice,

  310. and then he likes me,

  311. and so he will give me good weather, right?

  312. But that's me paying him off.

  313. It's like bribery.

  314. That's not what's happening here, right?

  315. Because it's not, you know,

  316. Aaron's idea or Moses' idea.

  317. This is God saying,

  318. hey, if you want to be forgiven,

  319. you need to do these steps,

  320. and then you'll be forgiven.

  321. And so it is God's initiative.

  322. It's God's,

  323. God is clearly willing to forgive.

  324. It's just that forgiveness isn't automatic,

  325. and so that's why we need to go through these steps.

  326. But it is all grace,

  327. all God's love.

  328. This is not, yeah,

  329. this is not religion as in our effort.

  330. This is God's grace.

  331. But at the same time,

  332. as you heard,

  333. it's not simple.

  334. It needs to be exactly God's way,

  335. exactly as he says.

  336. In the beginning,

  337. Aaron is reminded,

  338. oh yeah,

  339. don't just come into the most holy place by yourself.

  340. Because earlier in the book,

  341. you know,

  342. his sons did that,

  343. and they died.

  344. God's presence is dangerous

  345. if you're a sinner.

  346. And so,

  347. only in this special way.

  348. So we'll go through the ritual

  349. in great detail,

  350. so that you can just appreciate

  351. how much work this is,

  352. how difficult it was.

  353. And there's actually lots of echoes of the cross.

  354. I'm not going to just go through

  355. and point them all out,

  356. more like at the end.

  357. But I hope,

  358. if you know the cross,

  359. that actually you can see

  360. so much of that foreshadowing.

  361. So what happens,

  362. there's basically two parts.

  363. There are sin offerings

  364. and burnt offerings,

  365. and both for the priest

  366. and for the people.

  367. Those four.

  368. Most of the focus

  369. is on the sin offerings,

  370. because that's the big problem,

  371. right?

  372. Payment,

  373. punishment for sin.

  374. First,

  375. in preparation,

  376. Aaron needs to change his clothes.

  377. So normally,

  378. he has this beautiful

  379. purple,

  380. blue,

  381. gold outfit,

  382. the same colors

  383. as a tabernacle,

  384. like this heavenly,

  385. glorious,

  386. that,

  387. yeah,

  388. who fits with God.

  389. But actually,

  390. he now changes

  391. into simple,

  392. white linen clothes.

  393. He becomes like a servant

  394. for this ritual.

  395. And then he takes the animals

  396. for the sin offering,

  397. the substitutes.

  398. He takes a bull for himself

  399. and then goats for the people.

  400. Now,

  401. first,

  402. he needs to offer a bull

  403. for his own sin,

  404. because the problem is

  405. he himself is a sinner.

  406. And so he,

  407. you know,

  408. he needs to offer a bull,

  409. which kind of is interesting,

  410. right?

  411. Because for all the,

  412. you know,

  413. the millions of Israelites,

  414. just one goat.

  415. But he himself,

  416. a bull,

  417. like this huge animal,

  418. the biggest one you can offer.

  419. It's like,

  420. you know,

  421. the mediator is someone

  422. really special,

  423. right?

  424. Someone,

  425. not just an ordinary human,

  426. but someone who needs,

  427. yeah,

  428. a huge substitute,

  429. right?

  430. That is basically,

  431. yeah,

  432. this whole bull.

  433. And what do they do then?

  434. He gets offered

  435. as a sin offering.

  436. What do they do?

  437. They slit the bull's throat

  438. and then they drain the blood.

  439. And we heard that

  440. a few weeks ago

  441. when we looked at

  442. the covenant with Abraham,

  443. separating the blood

  444. from the body.

  445. That's,

  446. you know,

  447. this animal has really died.

  448. It's a symbol that,

  449. yeah,

  450. it's really died

  451. as a sacrifice.

  452. And then that blood

  453. needs to be,

  454. you know,

  455. given to God,

  456. right?

  457. That's a,

  458. hey,

  459. the death,

  460. the punishment has been paid.

  461. The death has occurred.

  462. And normally you just pour it out

  463. onto the altar,

  464. but yeah,

  465. today it needs to go

  466. into God's presence.

  467. So Aaron will go

  468. into the most holy place.

  469. The only thing is,

  470. of course,

  471. God is there,

  472. right?

  473. So that's very dangerous.

  474. So what does he do?

  475. He needs to take a censer

  476. and to kind of fill it

  477. with smoke

  478. so that basically

  479. they don't see each other,

  480. right?

  481. Because,

  482. you know,

  483. if you see God,

  484. you'll die.

  485. So fill it with smoke

  486. and then he takes the blood

  487. and he sprinkles that

  488. on the mercy seat,

  489. kind of where,

  490. like on God's throne.

  491. He can't touch it,

  492. so he sprinkles it,

  493. man,

  494. because if you touch it,

  495. you die.

  496. Sprinkling the blood

  497. on the mercy seat.

  498. And that's kind of,

  499. yeah,

  500. my sin has been paid for.

  501. And so he can come

  502. into God's presence.

  503. So that is for him.

  504. Then we get the sin offering

  505. for the people.

  506. And actually,

  507. there's two goats

  508. in this case.

  509. One,

  510. the first one

  511. is offered,

  512. well,

  513. same way as the bull,

  514. right?

  515. Slit the throat,

  516. drain the blood,

  517. sprinkle the blood

  518. in the same way.

  519. But actually,

  520. if you read it,

  521. it's not,

  522. that's not for the people.

  523. What is it?

  524. It's verse 16.

  525. He shall make atonement

  526. for the holy place.

  527. It's like,

  528. it's basically

  529. to cleanse the tent,

  530. to cleanse the temple.

  531. Because,

  532. you know,

  533. God has been living

  534. for a year

  535. with these people.

  536. And all their sin

  537. has kind of like

  538. contaminated everything.

  539. And it needs to be cleansed.

  540. Not just the people,

  541. but,

  542. you know,

  543. the environment,

  544. the tent where God lives.

  545. So,

  546. this goat

  547. pays for

  548. the contamination.

  549. And kind of

  550. all the pent-up

  551. judgment

  552. is kind of

  553. taken away.

  554. And then,

  555. now we get

  556. the other goat,

  557. and that

  558. pays for the people.

  559. So,

  560. what happens

  561. with this one?

  562. It's the

  563. scapegoat

  564. that you've maybe,

  565. from other translations.

  566. What happens

  567. with this goat?

  568. Actually,

  569. it's not killed

  570. in the same way.

  571. Aaron,

  572. he puts his hands

  573. on them,

  574. and he confesses

  575. all the sins

  576. of the people

  577. over this goat.

  578. It's like,

  579. all the people's sins

  580. get put on this goat.

  581. And what happens

  582. with the goat?

  583. Well,

  584. he then

  585. is brought

  586. outside the camp

  587. and let go.

  588. That doesn't mean

  589. he's free.

  590. He's going

  591. away from God's presence

  592. into the place

  593. of judgment,

  594. right?

  595. He,

  596. he's sent away.

  597. But,

  598. but,

  599. that is the symbolism,

  600. right?

  601. I mean,

  602. it's very powerful.

  603. Animals killed

  604. really shows

  605. death penalty.

  606. And now this animal

  607. taking all their sins

  608. away

  609. and dying for it.

  610. That,

  611. that is what needs

  612. to happen.

  613. And for atonement,

  614. yeah,

  615. punishment

  616. for sins.

  617. But so much work,

  618. right?

  619. So many animals

  620. and rituals

  621. and then Aaron

  622. needs to have

  623. another bath,

  624. right?

  625. All the people

  626. involved need to have a,

  627. they need to wash themselves,

  628. all the contamination

  629. of sin needs to be gone.

  630. And then it's still

  631. not done

  632. because now Aaron

  633. has to offer

  634. a burnt offering.

  635. That's again

  636. something else.

  637. Maybe you think,

  638. oh,

  639. did the sin offering

  640. not work?

  641. No,

  642. there are two different

  643. kind of offerings.

  644. The sin offering,

  645. that's really punishment

  646. for sin.

  647. The sin offering,

  648. what happens

  649. to the animal,

  650. well,

  651. it's brought outside

  652. the camp

  653. and burned

  654. with fire.

  655. That's really,

  656. that's what sin deserves,

  657. right?

  658. Being thrown out

  659. of God's presence

  660. and burned with fire.

  661. It's a picture of hell.

  662. That is kind of

  663. what you deserve.

  664. The burnt offering,

  665. on the other hand,

  666. it's on the altar

  667. and wholly burnt up

  668. to God.

  669. It's like

  670. a pleasing aroma,

  671. the Bible says.

  672. So this is not

  673. about punishment

  674. for sin,

  675. this is about obedience.

  676. Because,

  677. you know,

  678. if you want to be with God,

  679. you shouldn't just have no sin.

  680. You also need to live

  681. a perfect life.

  682. A life that's perfectly devoted

  683. to God,

  684. right?

  685. Of fully obeying him.

  686. And we don't have that.

  687. And so,

  688. here's an animal

  689. and it's got his life

  690. fully devoted to God.

  691. It's wholly burnt up

  692. for God,

  693. right?

  694. That's the idea.

  695. So it's like,

  696. okay,

  697. this substitutes

  698. for my righteousness,

  699. for my obedience.

  700. And so,

  701. for this,

  702. Aaron,

  703. well,

  704. he changes his clothes,

  705. he puts back his normal,

  706. glorious clothes,

  707. and then he offers,

  708. yeah,

  709. a burnt offering

  710. for himself

  711. and for the people.

  712. He offers,

  713. yeah,

  714. righteousness

  715. to the people.

  716. So payment for sin

  717. plus obedience

  718. and then it's all done.

  719. Right?

  720. I don't know if you could,

  721. I hope you could follow that.

  722. I hope it makes sense,

  723. but

  724. it's very complicated,

  725. right?

  726. But at the same time,

  727. where does it end?

  728. It ends so gloriously,

  729. right?

  730. At the end of verse 16,

  731. chapter 16,

  732. verse 30,

  733. on this day

  734. shall atonement be made

  735. for you to cleanse you.

  736. You shall be clean

  737. before the Lord

  738. from all your sins.

  739. And there's God's promise.

  740. You're going to be clean

  741. from all your sins.

  742. You're going to be forgiven

  743. all your sins.

  744. If we do this

  745. and if you trust it,

  746. if you trust the gospel

  747. proclaimed here,

  748. you will be clean

  749. from all your sins.

  750. And that's incredible,

  751. right?

  752. That's what the people wanted.

  753. They wanted God

  754. to be with them.

  755. They wanted to,

  756. you know,

  757. be his people

  758. and he their God.

  759. And now that could happen

  760. because this ritual

  761. had taken place

  762. because their sin

  763. was paid for.

  764. And it's all

  765. by God's grace.

  766. They didn't deserve it.

  767. They didn't do anything

  768. for it.

  769. But God

  770. atoned for their sins.

  771. It's so wonderful,

  772. so precious.

  773. But man,

  774. it's complicated,

  775. right?

  776. It's burdensome.

  777. All the sacrifices,

  778. all the rituals,

  779. all the clothes,

  780. all the washings.

  781. Now,

  782. what do you go away with?

  783. You know,

  784. can a holy God

  785. dwell with a sinful people?

  786. Yes,

  787. but it's difficult.

  788. Yes,

  789. it's possible,

  790. but there's so much involved,

  791. right?

  792. Because God is really,

  793. really holy.

  794. And we are really,

  795. really sinful.

  796. And so,

  797. the only way

  798. that is going to work

  799. is through this

  800. very complicated

  801. process,

  802. this very complicated

  803. way of atoning.

  804. And even then,

  805. you know,

  806. I say it's glorious

  807. and I think it is.

  808. And yet,

  809. at the same time,

  810. you know,

  811. the people want to get back

  812. to the Garden of Eden,

  813. right?

  814. Want to get back

  815. into a relationship

  816. with God.

  817. How close is this

  818. to the Garden of Eden?

  819. Well,

  820. not that close,

  821. right?

  822. I mean,

  823. the best commentary

  824. on this day

  825. is in the book of Hebrews,

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  826. chapters 9 and 10.

  827. Maybe you can read it

  828. in your own time,

  829. but the writer there

  830. reflects on the Day of Atonement

  831. and compares it

  832. with the cross

  833. and actually,

  834. it falls short,

  835. right?

  836. I mean,

  837. Aaron,

  838. he needs to pay

  839. for his own sin.

  840. In a way,

  841. he needs a mediator himself,

  842. right?

  843. How is he going to do that

  844. compared to Jesus?

  845. The holy place

  846. and the most holy place.

  847. Can they be in God's presence?

  848. Well,

  849. they are outside the court

  850. and the priests

  851. only go into the first one

  852. and as the writer says,

  853. well,

  854. you know,

  855. in the second place

  856. only the high priest goes

  857. and he but once a year.

  858. And by this,

  859. the Holy Spirit indicates

  860. that the way

  861. into the holy places

  862. is not yet opened.

  863. In a way,

  864. it's glorious,

  865. but at the same time,

  866. you see it and,

  867. well,

  868. actually,

  869. I still can't really

  870. be with God,

  871. right?

  872. I still can't go

  873. into his presence.

  874. There's still all these layers

  875. in between us.

  876. And the sacrifices,

  877. yeah,

  878. they get repeated every year.

  879. And again,

  880. the writer to the Hebrews,

    Hebrews 10:1

  881. chapter 10,

  882. verse 1,

  883. you know,

  884. the law can never

  885. by the same sacrifices

  886. that are continually

  887. offered every year

  888. make perfect

  889. those who draw near.

  890. Otherwise,

  891. would they not have

  892. ceased to be offered

  893. since the worshippers

  894. having once been cleansed

  895. would no longer

  896. have any consciousness

  897. of sins.

  898. But in these sacrifices,

  899. there is a reminder

  900. of sins every year.

  901. Right?

  902. In a way,

  903. the people would be

  904. celebrating,

  905. but on the other hand,

  906. if they think about it,

  907. man,

  908. clearly I'm still sinful.

  909. Clearly my sin

  910. hasn't fully been dealt with.

  911. Right?

  912. It just maintains

  913. the status quo.

  914. They don't get destroyed.

  915. Right?

  916. God stays there

  917. in his tent

  918. and they don't get destroyed.

  919. That's basically

  920. the thing.

  921. It maintains

  922. the status quo,

  923. but it doesn't

  924. really solve it.

  925. I was thinking of,

  926. I've never been in prison,

  927. but if you've seen movies,

  928. you know what it's like

  929. when you're in prison

  930. and you get a visit

  931. from your family.

  932. And that's really wonderful,

  933. right?

  934. Because you can see

  935. your family.

  936. The only thing is

  937. you're behind a screen

  938. and you need to talk

  939. for a phone

  940. and it's only

  941. for 10 minutes.

  942. In a way,

  943. it's wonderful,

  944. but on the other hand,

  945. it just reminds you

  946. that you're not there yet,

  947. right?

  948. Because I'm a criminal.

  949. And I can't be

  950. with my family

  951. until my sentence

  952. is served,

  953. until the price

  954. is paid.

  955. I can't go out

  956. and give them a hug.

  957. I'm still stuck here

  958. behind this screen.

  959. And doesn't it make

  960. the cross

  961. so remarkable

  962. then,

  963. right?

  964. Because we see this

  965. and we think this is,

  966. yeah,

  967. in a way it's glorious,

  968. but it's limited.

  969. But Jesus then comes

  970. and as the writer

  971. to the Hebrews says,

  972. this is the complete solution.

  973. I mean,

  974. every element

  975. is far better,

  976. right?

  977. I mean,

  978. we talked about

  979. a mediator.

  980. Aaron needs to offer

  981. sins and righteousness

  982. sacrifices for himself.

  983. Jesus is perfect.

  984. He doesn't need

  985. any of that,

  986. right?

  987. He's perfect.

  988. And then,

  989. well,

  990. we talked about

  991. God's presence.

  992. Jesus didn't just

  993. go into a tent.

  994. Jesus went into

  995. heaven itself,

  996. right?

  997. He really went

  998. into God's presence,

  999. not just to some

  1000. symbolic place.

  1001. And the sacrifice,

1002. not just bulls and goats,

  1003. his own blood.

  1004. So,

  1005. the writer says,

  1006. look,

  1007. all these elements,

  1008. Jesus did something

  1009. far greater

  1010. and

  1011. the big evidence,

  1012. he sat down,

  1013. right?

1014. No more work to do.

  1015. The whole priesthood

  1016. all gone because Jesus,

  1017. he did the work

  1018. and it's finished

  1019. and he sat down.

  1020. I mean,

  1021. can you imagine

  1022. the day of atonement,

1023. the ritual we just said,

  1024. but then,

1025. kind of what Jesus did.

  1026. So,

  1027. here's Aaron,

  1028. no smoke,

  1029. no bulls or whatever.

  1030. He just goes

  1031. into God's presence

  1032. and then he opens

  1033. the curtain

1034. like you do in the morning,

  1035. right?

1036. A bit stuffy in here

1037. and then he takes a chair

1038. and he just sits down

  1039. next to God's throne.

  1040. Who could do that,

  1041. right?

  1042. Can you imagine

1043. just a sinful human being

  1044. walking into God's presence

  1045. like that

  1046. and then opening up

  1047. the curtain

  1048. and sitting down?

1049. That is what Jesus did.

  1050. It's impossible to believe,

  1051. but he did it,

  1052. right?

1053. And we're not just clean

  1054. for one year,

  1055. we're clean for forever.

1056. Every sin you've ever committed

  1057. and will ever commit

  1058. for all God's people

  1059. forever,

  1060. fully paid for

  1061. in one go,

  1062. right?

1063. And now we can completely

  1064. go back to God.

  1065. Once Jesus comes back,

1066. we'll be with him forever.

  1067. It's amazing,

  1068. right?

1069. And all that just from the cross,

  1070. it's so wonderful.

1071. And yet it makes you then think,

  1072. well,

  1073. it's so simple,

  1074. right?

  1075. It's just a cross

  1076. and everything is sorted.

  1077. Except it wasn't simple.

  1078. Right?

  1079. It's really wonderful

1080. what we have in Jesus,

1081. but think about what it costs.

  1082. You know,

  1083. Jesus didn't just change

  1084. his clothes,

  1085. right?

  1086. He had to,

  1087. the son of God

  1088. had to come down

  1089. from heaven

1090. and take on a human form,

  1091. right?

  1092. Took on humanity,

  1093. become a man

1094. so that he could die

1095. and not just a ram.

  1096. He had to live

  1097. a perfect life

  1098. for 33 years

1099. so that he would have

  1100. a perfect human life

  1101. to offer to God.

  1102. And then,

  1103. yeah,

  1104. dying on the cross,

  1105. taking,

  1106. being forsaken,

  1107. taking the full

  1108. infinite wrath of God

  1109. against our sin

  1110. and then,

  1111. yeah,

  1112. rising and ascending

  1113. to heaven

  1114. and interceding

  1115. for us continually.

  1116. Actually,

  1117. the cross is huge.

  1118. We just don't think

  1119. about that,

  1120. right?

1121. We just take the cross

  1122. for granted.

  1123. You know,

  1124. you sin

  1125. and you just say,

  1126. oh,

  1127. sorry,

  1128. Lord,

  1129. and you move on.

  1130. So simple,

  1131. right?

  1132. Or prayer.

  1133. You have such access

  1134. to God.

  1135. You know,

1136. you can just talk to God

  1137. and something really simple.

  1138. Oh,

  1139. Lord,

  1140. I've got a runny nose.

  1141. Can you heal me?

  1142. And the thing is,

  1143. you can do that,

  1144. but that's just crazy,

  1145. right?

  1146. You know,

  1147. with such little trivialities,

1148. we can come to God.

1149. We think it's so normal.

  1150. And maybe,

  1151. yeah,

  1152. whatever we think,

  1153. maybe you're here

  1154. as a visitor,

  1155. prayer,

1156. it seems such a little thing,

  1157. right?

1158. You can just talk to God

  1159. anytime.

  1160. But it's a huge thing,

  1161. right?

  1162. And when he doesn't

  1163. directly answer our prayers,

1164. we get kind of annoyed.

  1165. You know,

1166. the cross is a huge thing.

  1167. So my first degree

  1168. was in telecommunications

  1169. back when 3G

  1170. was still the future.

  1171. And,

  1172. you know,

  1173. and these days,

1174. you can just video call

  1175. to your family

  1176. on the other side

  1177. of the world

  1178. and people do that

1179. and they kind of complain

  1180. that it's a little bit blurry

  1181. and there's half a second delay.

  1182. Well,

  1183. I've studied that.

  1184. I know what's going on

  1185. behind the scenes.

1186. I know about the speed of light.

  1187. Man,

  1188. you have no idea

  1189. how much technology

  1190. and science

1191. goes into making this work.

  1192. You should really

  1193. not complain about this

  1194. at all,

  1195. right?

  1196. The thing is,

1197. we take it for granted.

1198. We have such good access

  1199. and we just think,

  1200. no.

  1201. And that is nothing

  1202. compared to your faith.

  1203. We are so spoiled

  1204. for our relationship

  1205. with God.

  1206. If you would know

  1207. your sin,

  1208. right?

  1209. Everything that you've ever

  1210. said wrong

  1211. or done wrong

  1212. or thought wrong,

  1213. there isn't a book

  1214. big enough

1215. to write it all down.

1216. And God is so holy,

  1217. such a blazing,

  1218. consuming fire.

1219. If we would really know that,

  1220. who do you think

1221. that you can just go

  1222. into the throne room

  1223. of heaven

  1224. and complain about

  1225. your runny nose,

  1226. right?

1227. That's the thing we do.

  1228. But that is what

  1229. the cross achieve,

  1230. right?

  1231. We make so lightly

  1232. of prayer.

  1233. We make so lightly

  1234. of confession

  1235. and yet Jesus

1236. did such a huge thing.

  1237. And this ritual here

  1238. is just a little

  1239. small foretaste

  1240. of how difficult

  1241. it was for God

  1242. to bring you back

  1243. to him.

  1244. But he did it.

1245. And God just wants you

  1246. to stop and think

  1247. about that.

  1248. That is here

  1249. what's the application

  1250. for the Israelites,

  1251. right?

  1252. Verse 29.

  1253. And it shall be

  1254. a statute to you

  1255. forever

1256. that in the seventh month

  1257. on the tenth day

  1258. of the month

  1259. you shall afflict yourselves

1260. and shall do no work,

  1261. either the native

  1262. or the stranger

  1263. who sojourns among you.

  1264. Now one day,

  1265. no work

  1266. and afflict yourselves.

  1267. Fasting.

  1268. Fasting

  1269. and just stop

  1270. and think.

  1271. Don't go about

  1272. your business.

1273. Look what a big thing

1274. God is doing for you.

  1275. Don't take it

  1276. for granted.

  1277. Stop

  1278. and meditate.

  1279. And I think

  1280. that's what God

  1281. still wants for us.

  1282. That's why we're taking

1283. a series on the cross.

  1284. You know,

  1285. because we want

1286. to just take this in

  1287. and realize again

  1288. what a huge thing

  1289. it is that God

  1290. has done for us.

  1291. There will be

  1292. other churches

1293. and they have a sermon

  1294. on kind of five,

  1295. you know,

1296. habits for a successful career.

  1297. And that feels

  1298. quite inappropriate,

  1299. right?

1300. When the Son of God

1301. is dying for your sins

  1302. and you're busy

  1303. with your career.

  1304. No.

1305. Look what a big thing

  1306. God is doing,

  1307. has done,

  1308. one day,

  1309. completely forever,

  1310. 2,000 years ago.

  1311. All right?

  1312. That's why we have

  1313. Good Friday.

  1314. That's why many

  1315. Christian traditions,

1316. people fast on Good Friday

  1317. because,

  1318. you know,

1319. just like this day here

  1320. because this is such

  1321. a big thing

1322. and I want to just

  1323. take it in

  1324. and actually,

  1325. you know,

  1326. food and everything

  1327. is not as important

  1328. as what God did.

  1329. even in a moment,

  1330. we're going to have

  1331. the Lord's Supper,

  1332. right?

  1333. The body and blood

  1334. separated.

  1335. It's a real sacrifice,

  1336. right?

  1337. That's the idea

  1338. because Jesus said,

  1339. do this in remembrance

  1340. of me.

  1341. So we don't take

  1342. the cross for granted.

  1343. Yeah,

  1344. just to make us

  1345. humble and thankful.

  1346. When we really appreciate

  1347. what God has done,

  1348. see how serious

  1349. our sin is,

  1350. serious,

1351. see what God has done.

  1352. Well,

1353. we will be so thankful

  1354. and,

  1355. yeah,

  1356. it will transform

1357. the way we see God,

  1358. right?

  1359. That he did this

  1360. in his love

  1361. and grace

  1362. and mercy

  1363. and that we see

  1364. ourselves.

  1365. So let's not take

  1366. it for granted.

  1367. Please use it.

  1368. I mean,

  1369. please pray about

  1370. your runny nose.

  1371. Please,

  1372. please confess,

  1373. you know,

1374. whenever you have a sin,

  1375. confession is a privilege,

  1376. right?

  1377. Because if God

  1378. wasn't forgiving,

  1379. what's the point

  1380. in confessing?

  1381. But he is forgiving

1382. and you can just confess

  1383. and enjoy

  1384. and use what Jesus

  1385. has done for you.

  1386. But don't take it

  1387. for granted.

  1388. it.
