  1. We will now read from two passages in the Bible.

  2. If you have a Bible with you,

  3. and then please turn to Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  4. It's also printed in your bulletin,

  5. and you can see it on the screens.

  6. There are, however, Bibles at the back

  7. if you would rather like a hard copy in your hands.

  8. So first, Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6:1–6

  9. verses 1 to 6.

  10. Now, in these days,

  11. when the disciples were increasing in number,

  12. a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews

  13. because their widows are being neglected

  14. in the daily distribution.

  15. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,

  16. It is not right that we should give up

  17. preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  18. Therefore, brothers,

  19. pick out from among you seven men of good repute,

  20. full of the Spirit and of wisdom,

  21. whom we will appoint to this duty.

  22. But we will devote ourselves to prayer

  23. and to the ministry of the word.

  24. And what they said pleased the whole gathering,

  25. and they chose Stephen,

  26. a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,

  27. and Philip, and Prochorus,

  28. and Nicanor, and Timon,

  29. and Parmenas, and Nicholas,

  30. a proselyte of Antioch.

  31. These they said before the apostles,

  32. and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

  33. And then the second passage is 1 Timothy 3, verses 1 to 10,

    1 Timothy 3:1–10

  34. which talks about the qualifications for elders and deacons.

  35. The saying is trustworthy.

  36. If anyone aspires to the office of overseer,

  37. he desires a noble task.

  38. Therefore, an overseer must be above reproach,

  39. the husband of one wife,

  40. sober-minded, self-controlled,

  41. respectable, hospitable,

  42. able to teach,

  43. not a drunkard,

  44. not violent but gentle,

  45. not quarrelsome,

  46. not a lover of money.

  47. He must manage his own household well,

  48. with all dignity,

  49. keeping his children submissive.

  50. For if someone does not know

  51. how to manage his own household,

  52. how will he care for God's church?

  53. He must not be a recent convert,

  54. or he may become puffed up with conceit

  55. and fall into the condemnation of the devil.

  56. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders,

  57. so that he may not fall into disgrace,

  58. into a snare of the devil.

  59. Deacons, likewise,

  60. must be dignified,

  61. not double-tongued,

  62. not addicted to much wine,

  63. not greedy for dishonest gain.

  64. They must hold the mystery of the faith

  65. with a clear conscience,

  66. and let them also be tested first.

  67. Then let them serve as deacons,

  68. if they prove themselves blameless.

  69. This is the Holy Word of God.

  70. Amen.

  71. All right, well, we are in a month

  72. where we are nominating

  73. both elders and deacons for office.

  74. And so, in a season like this,

  75. a lot of questions come up.

  76. Who can be an elder?

  77. Who can be a deacon?

  78. What is an elder?

  79. What is a deacon?

  80. Who should we choose?

  81. What do they do, for that matter?

  82. Why do we have church leadership

  83. in a structure like this

  84. with elders and deacons?

  85. There are more questions

  86. that might come up for you

  87. than we can answer today.

  88. So, let's do the most foundational thing,

  89. the most fundamental things

  90. with this call for elders and deacons

  91. that we're having right now

  92. and look together at Acts 6.

  93. So, we read from Acts 6

  94. because this is one of the few places

  95. in the Bible

  96. where we see elders and deacons

  97. working together in a really live way.

  98. The apostles acting as some of the first elders

  99. and then the first seven proto-deacons,

  100. as we often say,

  101. called here at the beginning,

  102. right in the earliest moments of the church.

  103. And let's see the realism of the church

  104. that gives way to deacons,

  105. the reality of what the church is like,

  106. the need for deacons, in other words,

  107. the priorities of elder and deacon,

  108. and then lastly, the people themselves.

  109. Okay, so first, the realism,

  110. the circumstances,

  111. the reality of the church

  112. that gives rise to a need for deacons.

  113. That's what we see here.

  114. So, in Acts 6,

  115. there's a couple circumstances taking place

  116. that give rise to the office of deacon

  117. for the first time ever.

  118. First, the church was growing explosively.

  119. So, Jesus died,

  120. He rose from the dead,

  121. He commissioned His apostles,

  122. and now the church is expanding really rapidly.

  123. And so, we learn in Acts already twice,

  124. 3,000 people came to faith in Jerusalem

  125. in a weekend, in a day.

  126. 5,000 people in the next chapter

  127. come to faith around Jerusalem.

  128. And then, in the passage just before this,

  129. Acts 5, 14,

  130. it says that a multitude of men and women follow Jesus.

  131. And so, there's this explosive growth,

  132. and they're trying to figure out

  133. how to do church and churches

  134. in the light of all the people

  135. coming to faith in Jesus

  136. and following Jesus.

  137. The other circumstances,

  138. we see really clearly

  139. from the very beginning of the church

  140. that the apostles,

  141. the disciples,

  142. the first leaders,

  143. were really, really committed

  144. to daily distributions

  145. of food and clothing

  146. to the poor.

  147. So, that's the context

  148. that this passage is all about.

  149. Now, to understand that,

  150. you've got to understand

  151. that in the first century,

  152. there are a lot of people

  153. experiencing abject poverty,

  154. true poverty.

  155. So, we have the materially poor,

  156. poor people

  157. who struggle with material poverty

  158. in our city.

  159. And here in the first century,

  160. you would have had

  161. the type of poverty

  162. where truly people

  163. could often not find clothing.

  164. So, when Jesus says,

  165. feed the poor,

  166. give a cup of water

  167. to the thirsty,

  168. and clothe the naked,

  169. he was serious.

  170. It was not,

  171. that was not just a metaphor,

  172. that was very real.

  173. There were people

  174. who literally

  175. could not find clothing.

  176. And so, there's a lot

  177. of abject poverty here

  178. in the earliest moments

  179. of the church in Jerusalem.

  180. Just in a couple chapters

  181. previously,

  182. Barnabas,

  183. one of the early evangelists,

  184. he, we're told that

  185. when he experienced

  186. the gospel,

  187. the transforming work

  188. of the gospel in his life,

  189. he turned around

  190. and sold his land

  191. so that he could give

  192. the money

  193. to cover the clothing

  194. and food needs

  195. of the poor in Jerusalem.

  196. And so, people were doing

  197. that all the time.

  198. This was not

  199. communism.

  200. No, it was people

  201. who had been transformed

  202. by the generosity

  203. of Christ in the gospel.

  204. And so, we're willing

  205. to give away everything

  206. to meet the needs

  207. of the people

  208. all around them.

  209. They had a real needs ministry.

  210. And they learned that

  211. through God's generosity

  212. to them,

  213. the generosity

  214. of the cross,

  215. the love of God

  216. in the gospel.

  217. So, we read in James,

  218. Jesus' brother,

  219. James, biological brother,

  220. who did not believe

  221. in Jesus

  222. when Jesus was doing

  223. his ministry,

  224. but after the resurrection

  225. came to faith

  226. in his biological brother,

  227. his Messiah, Jesus.

  228. In the book of James,

    James 2 chapter mention

  229. chapter 2,

  230. this is what he says

  231. about needs ministry

  232. that Georgie was talking

  233. about,

  234. what we read about here.

  235. He says,

  236. if a brother or sister

  237. is without clothing

  238. and in need of daily food

  239. and one of you says to them,

  240. go in peace,

  241. be warm,

  242. be filled,

  243. but you do not give them

  244. what is necessary

  245. for their body

  246. to make them warm

  247. or fill them up with food.

  248. What use is that?

  249. Even so,

  250. even so faith,

  251. even with faith,

  252. if it has no works,

  253. it is dead.

  254. So James says,

  255. faith without the living act

  256. of service of people

  257. in need is dead faith.

  258. Faith loves,

  259. faith works,

  260. faith exhibits itself

  261. in transformation.

  262. And so caring for one another

  263. was a really,

  264. really big deal

  265. in the early church

  266. and we learn here

  267. just from the example

  268. of Christ,

  269. the example of the apostles

  270. that faith in Jesus

  271. must be accompanied

  272. by care for one another,

  273. by loving works,

  274. by good works.

  275. And we learn that

  276. from who?

  277. From God himself

  278. in the Old Testament.

  279. One scholar talks about

  280. the quadrilateral

  281. of the vulnerable

  282. in the Old Testament,

  283. this fourfold way

  284. of understanding paradigm

  285. for who are the most vulnerable

  286. in the Old Testament

  287. ancient Near Eastern society.

  288. And he says,

  289. they are the widow,

  290. the orphan,

  291. the sojourner,

  292. the person who's traveling

  293. without a home,

  294. and the materially poor.

  295. And we all across

  296. the Old Testament

  297. see God say,

  298. I care for the widow,

  299. the fatherless,

  300. the sojourner,

  301. and the poor.

  302. Psalm 68,

  303. Isaiah chapter 1,

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  304. do good,

  305. do justice.

  306. I am a father

  307. to the fatherless.

  308. I am a home

  309. for those who have poverty,

  310. God says.

  311. And then he turns

  312. and he says to God's people,

  313. go and do likewise.

  314. Jesus said,

  315. love as I have loved.

  316. So he gives the church

  317. really clearly

  318. this example

  319. in the early days

  320. of the church.

  321. Now,

  322. the specific issue

  323. in Jerusalem,

  324. this specific issue

  325. we're reading about here

  326. in Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  327. is that

  328. when all these thousands

  329. of people

  330. came to faith

  331. in Jerusalem,

  332. there were largely

  333. two groups of people

  334. that came to follow Jesus

  335. in the beginning.

  336. They were Hebrew-speaking Jews,

  337. Hebrew and Aramaic-speaking Jews

  338. on the one hand,

  339. and on the other hand,

  340. Greek-speaking Jews.

  341. So that's what's referred to

  342. here in verse 1

  343. as the Hellenist.

  344. And so you've got Jews

  345. spread out all over

  346. the Roman Empire,

  347. and many of them

  348. have come back

  349. to Jerusalem.

  350. And so they would have

  351. spoken the lingua franca

  352. of the day,

  353. which was Greek,

  354. not Hebrew,

  355. not Aramaic.

  356. And so what's happened

  357. is all these people,

  358. all these Jews

  359. have come to faith

  360. in Christ,

  361. but some speak Hebrew,

  362. some speak Greek.

  363. And you know that

  364. when you have

  365. different languages,

  366. you're often separated,

  367. and there's cultural difference.

  368. And so in the daily

  369. distribution for the poor,

  370. the widows who spoke

  371. Greek said

  372. that they were getting

  373. neglected

  374. by the apostles

  375. in the daily distribution

  376. of food and clothing.

  377. So we don't know

  378. all that was going on

  379. in there,

  380. but we learned a couple

  381. things about that.

  382. One is,

  383. and here's the realism

  384. of the church.

  385. The church,

  386. as it grew,

  387. was struggling

  388. administratively,

  389. was struggling

  390. organizationally.

  391. Now,

  392. I'm sure you've never

  393. been in a church

  394. that struggles

  395. administratively

  396. and organizationally,

  397. right?

  398. You've never been

  399. in a church

  400. that fails to communicate

  401. well.

  402. You've never been

  403. in a church

  404. that struggles

  405. to get it all in order

  406. and get all the volunteers

  407. in place,

  408. right?

  409. Look,

  410. the realism of the church,

  411. churches struggle

  412. organizationally.

  413. And the longer

  414. you've been around

  415. the local church,

  416. the more you know that.

  417. And we see that

  418. right here.

  419. Even the apostles,

  420. they couldn't keep

  421. it all together.

  422. They were

  423. all over the place

  424. trying to meet

  425. everybody's needs

  426. and there was just

  427. too many people

  428. and they couldn't do it.

  429. You know,

  430. the church is much more

  431. of a family

  432. than it is a corporation

  433. and so sometimes

  434. there's a lot of struggle

  435. in the midst of that.

  436. The second real thing

  437. we see here

  438. is that

  439. we don't know for sure

  440. but it very well

  441. may have been the case

  442. that there was prejudice

  443. involved in this.

  444. So when you're speaking

  445. a different language,

  446. when you're a Hebrew speaker

  447. and there's the Greek speakers,

  448. but you're all

  449. in the same church,

  450. there's a lot of

  451. cultural difference,

  452. a lot of divide,

  453. and it's just a natural thing

  454. that probably many people

  455. were favoring those

  456. that speak their own language

  457. from their own culture

  458. and community.

  459. And there was maybe

  460. an element of prejudice

  461. in all this

  462. and there's relational messiness

  463. from the very beginning

  464. even with the lives

  465. of the apostles here.

  466. And that means

  467. we see

  468. that churches

  469. can be organizationally messy

  470. and relationally messy.

  471. We are not

  472. perfect people

  473. and this is not

  474. a perfect place

  475. and that is the culture

  476. and the context

  477. that gave rise

  478. to the office of deacon.

  479. Quite unremarkable

  480. in many ways,

  481. so important

  482. in another sense of it.

  483. But what we do see

  484. is that

  485. in spite of

  486. the messiness,

  487. the relational messiness,

  488. the organizational messiness,

  489. the two things

  490. we learn about here

  491. that they would not

  492. let go of

  493. is the apostle said

  494. we have an intense

  495. devotion

  496. to the ministry

  497. of the word

  498. so we will not neglect

  499. the preaching

  500. of the gospel,

  501. the opening of the Bible

  502. on the one hand

  503. and we will not neglect

  504. the caring

  505. of the daily distribution

  506. on the other.

  507. We'll do whatever it takes

  508. to figure it out.

  509. Even God

  510. in his providence

  511. creating an office

  512. called deacon

  513. to satisfy this issue

  514. and satisfy

  515. these needs.

  516. Look,

  517. in the early church

  518. the historians

  519. will tell you

  520. Rodney Stark,

  521. Larry Hurtado,

  522. they will say

  523. these great scholars

  524. of church history,

  525. they will say

  526. that what gave rise

  527. to the rapid growth

  528. and expansion

  529. of Christianity

  530. in the Roman Empire

  531. in the first three centuries

  532. was two things.

  533. One,

  534. people going around

  535. in the first generation

  536. saying

  537. I saw Jesus Christ

  538. die on the cross

  539. and I saw Jesus Christ

  540. alive three days later.

  541. And then

  542. that's called

  543. the preaching of the gospel,

  544. the sharing of the gospel

  545. and the apostle said

  546. we'll never let that go.

  547. On the other hand,

  548. the historians

  549. will tell you

  550. the other thing

  551. was the churches

  552. care for the poor

  553. anywhere they were.

  554. And so many people

  555. were attracted

  556. to Christianity

  557. through that means.

  558. And it wasn't just

  559. care for the poor

  560. within the community

  561. of faith

  562. like our needs

  563. ministry does,

  564. but it was care

  565. for also outsiders,

  566. those who are yet

  567. to become Christians

  568. as well.

  569. We learn this

  570. in Galatians chapter 6.

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  571. Paul says,

  572. do not neglect

  573. to care for the needs

  574. of all,

  575. especially those

  576. in the household

  577. of faith.

  578. He says,

  579. do not neglect

  580. the care

  581. of the needs

  582. of everyone,

  583. especially those

  584. in the church community,

  585. meaning both inside

  586. and outside.

  587. In the late

  588. fourth century,

  589. the late 300s,

  590. Christianity

  591. had really

  592. gathered momentum.

  593. A lot of people

  594. had come to faith

  595. in Christ

  596. across the Roman Empire.

  597. But there was

  598. an emperor

  599. named Julian

  600. called Julian

  601. the Apostate.

  602. That's his nickname.

  603. And he was

  604. a big enemy

  605. of Christianity.

  606. He sort of

  607. took the charge

  608. on the last ditch

  609. effort to try

  610. to rid the kingdom

  611. of Christianity.

  612. So there was

  613. a grand persecution

  614. across the empire

  615. in that time.

  616. But we have a letter

  617. from Julian.

  618. And Julian

  619. writes a letter

  620. to the priests

  621. of polytheism,

  622. the priests

  623. of the Greco-Roman gods

  624. across the empire.

  625. And he writes

  626. a letter

  627. about the church,

  628. about the Christian church.

  629. And listen to what

  630. he says about it.

  631. This is what he says.

  632. He writes this

  633. in an age

  634. where polytheism

  635. is in decline

  636. and he's really

  637. worried about it.

  638. Okay, that's the context.

  639. Why do we think

  640. that what we have done

  641. is sufficient

  642. and do not observe

  643. how the kindness

  644. of the Christians

  645. to strangers,

  646. their care

  647. for the burial

  648. of the dead,

  649. the sobriety

  650. of their lifestyle

  651. has done the most

  652. to advance

  653. their cause

  654. in the kingdom?

  655. Each of these things

  656. ought to be practiced

  657. by us.

  658. Tell the priests

  659. to stop drinking

  660. so much.

  661. I'm devising a plan.

  662. Erect hostels

  663. for strangers

  664. in all the cities.

  665. Be kind

  666. to strangers

  667. for it is disgraceful

  668. that when no Jew

  669. ever has to beg

  670. and the Christians

  671. support not only

  672. their own poor

  673. but our poor

  674. as well,

  675. all men see

  676. that our people

  677. are lacking

  678. aid from us.

  679. So this is

  680. Julian's attempt

  681. to try to battle

  682. the Christians.

  683. He said,

  684. look at what they're doing.

  685. Look at how they love people.

  686. Now in the midst

  687. of that point too,

  688. we learn in the midst

  689. of a context like this

  690. the priorities

  691. of the elders

  692. and deacons.

  693. And it's real simple.

  694. We've already said it.

  695. It said,

  696. they said,

  697. we will not neglect

  698. the ministry of the word,

  699. opening up the Bible,

  700. preaching and teaching

  701. the gospel,

  702. and will not neglect

  703. the ministry of love.

  704. Right?

  705. So we see the priorities

  706. of elders and deacons.

  707. Very simple.

  708. The two offices

  709. and what they're supposed

  710. to be doing.

  711. So here,

  712. the apostles say,

  713. we will not give up

  714. our focus on preaching

  715. the gospel to serve tables.

  716. And it's really fascinating.

  717. What does it say?

  718. It says,

  719. we will open up the Bible

  720. and do the ministry

  721. of the word

  722. like we're doing now

  723. and we pray.

  724. So the apostles,

  725. it says,

  726. devoted themselves

  727. to preaching

  728. and prayer.

  729. But then they say,

  730. nevertheless,

  731. let's raise up seven men

  732. to fulfill this task.

  733. Now,

  734. today,

  735. we're in a time

  736. where there's a lot

  737. of resurgence

  738. in the church communities.

  739. And this has happened

  740. over really the past century

  741. in Scotland especially

  742. for recovering

  743. the ministry of mercy.

  744. Recovering the focus

  745. that the church

  746. is in the Bible

  747. called to take care

  748. of the needs of the poor.

  749. First inside the church,

  750. then also outside the church.

  751. So we've had

  752. a century of resurgence

  753. and talking about that.

  754. And notice here

  755. that the apostles say,

  756. no,

  757. we're serious about that.

  758. But a lot of times

  759. in our culture,

  760. in our past century,

  761. that has been

  762. at the expense of

  763. and neglect

  764. of preaching the word,

  765. right?

  766. So churches might focus

  767. on the ministry of mercy,

  768. on social causes,

  769. on justice

  770. in the broad sense

  771. of the term.

  772. But oftentimes,

  773. there's a false dichotomy

  774. or a zero-sum game.

  775. Where that just means

  776. that the gospel

  777. is no longer preached anymore.

  778. And you see

  779. what the apostles do here?

  780. They say,

  781. we will never stop

  782. preaching the gospel.

  783. And we will appoint

  784. seven men

  785. to make sure

  786. that the ministry of love

  787. is taking care of

  788. the ministry of mercy.

  789. So for them,

  790. it's never a zero-sum game.

  791. It's never a false dichotomy.

  792. It's always a both-and.

  793. They refuse to choose.

  794. And we see

  795. all throughout the Bible

  796. that God's people

  797. in the Old Covenant,

  798. Israel,

  799. and in the New Testament,

  800. the church,

  801. fulfilled through Jesus,

  802. they're always called

  803. to both ministries.

  804. The ministry of the word,

  805. the ministry of God's grace,

  806. telling people about Jesus,

  807. and at the same time,

  808. the ministry of loving deeds,

  809. of loving service.

  810. Now,

  811. very simple.

  812. Elders,

  813. the apostles

  814. were the first elders,

  815. right?

  816. And first ministers

  817. of the church.

  818. The elders' job

  819. in the church

  820. is to be exemplars

  821. and lead us

  822. in the ministry

  823. of the word

  824. and prayer.

  825. The deacon's job

  826. is to lead us

  827. in the ministry

  828. of tangible deeds

  829. of love,

  830. tangible deeds

  831. of service.

  832. And these two

  833. go together,

  834. they fit together,

  835. they work together perfectly.

  836. You don't become

  837. a Christian

  838. by committing

  839. wonderful acts of love.

  840. You don't become

  841. a Christian

  842. by deaconing.

  843. You don't become

  844. a Christian

  845. by serving the community

  846. or showing works

  847. of mercy.

  848. You don't.

  849. No,

  850. you become a Christian

  851. only.

  852. You become a Christian

  853. only by placing faith

  854. in the great deacon

  855. himself,

  856. Jesus Christ,

  857. who served you

  858. all the way

  859. to the point of death.

  860. That's the only way.

  861. And faith

  862. works itself out

  863. in love.

  864. Transforming faith,

  865. the experience

  866. of the grace

  867. of God in Christ,

  868. transforming faith

  869. does work itself

  870. out in loving deeds.

  871. It shows up

  872. in the loving deeds.

  873. The deacons

  874. are there

  875. to lead us

  876. in loving deeds.

  877. The elders

  878. are there

  879. to lead us

  880. in the ministry

  881. of the word

  882. of the gospel,

  883. focusing on Christ.

  884. Now we see

  885. that these are never,

  886. it's so not a false

  887. dichotomy,

  888. so much so

  889. that all across

  890. even the book of Acts

  891. we see that elders

  892. will do the work

  893. of mercy,

  894. deacons will do

  895. the work of preaching.

  896. So Stephen,

  897. even in this passage,

  898. in the very next passage,

  899. Stephen,

  900. this first,

  901. one of the first deacons,

  902. he preaches

  903. for two whole chapters

  904. after this.

  905. Right?

  906. And think about Paul,

  907. the great elder,

  908. the great apostle,

  909. the great minister.

  910. What does Paul do?

  911. He says in Galatians 2.10,

  912. when I was commissioned

  913. to go and share

  914. the gospel,

  915. the ministry of the word,

  916. in prayer

  917. to the Gentiles,

  918. they told me,

  919. do not neglect the poor.

  920. And he said,

  921. and that was the very thing

  922. I was most eager to do.

  923. You see,

  924. elders,

  925. deacon,

  926. and deacons,

  927. elder.

  928. And that's because

  929. they're exemplars

  930. for all of us.

  931. Each of those offices

  932. lead us

  933. in each of those two things,

  934. but it's the whole work

  935. of the church,

  936. right?

  937. And so we saw,

  938. if you were around last week,

  939. Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  940. Jesus Christ gave

  941. the apostles,

  942. prophets,

  943. evangelists,

  944. shepherds,

  945. and teachers

  946. to do what?

  947. To equip

  948. the whole church

  949. for the work of ministry.

  950. So who gave us elders?

  951. Who gave us deacons?

  952. Who gave us apostles,

  953. prophets, evangelists?

  954. Jesus did.

  955. And he did that

  956. for what?

  957. So they could lead us

  958. in the whole work

  959. of ministry

  960. that we're all called to do.

  961. It's everybody's ministry.

  962. And that means that

  963. we learn here

  964. that deacons are,

  965. it's not an A team,

  966. B team situation.

  967. Elders are not the A team

  968. and deacons the B team.

  969. You know,

  970. you don't become a deacon

  971. and then graduate

  972. to an elder.

  973. No.

  974. These are two distinct callings

  975. that are clearly

  976. interrelated for life.

  977. So what's an elder?

  978. And I'll move to

  979. the final point.

  980. An elder,

  981. I like how one

  982. early church theologian

  983. wrote about it

  984. in the fourth century.

  985. He said,

  986. an elder is

  987. a spiritual physician.

  988. An elder is

  989. a spiritual doctor.

  990. And not in the sense

  991. that they do this

  992. for status or prestige

  993. or to be called doctor.

  994. You know,

  995. instead,

  996. an elder is a

  997. carer of souls.

  998. So an elder

  999. is not a CEO,

1000. an elder is not a CFO,

  1001. a chief financial officer.

  1002. An elder is not

  1003. a trustee

  1004. or a board member,

  1005. though sometimes

  1006. they have to do

1007. all this sort of stuff

1008. in the life of the church.

1009. An elder is a doctor

  1010. of the soul.

  1011. I'll use

  1012. Harold Sinkbeil,

  1013. who's recently

  1014. wrote a book

  1015. about eldership

  1016. and pastoring

  1017. and caring

  1018. for people's souls

1019. so that the current elders

1020. don't get mad at me

  1021. for this,

  1022. so I'll quote

  1023. somebody else.

  1024. Harold Sinkbeil,

  1025. he says that

  1026. elders are nothing

  1027. but errand boys,

  1028. errand boys

  1029. for Jesus.

  1030. I like,

  1031. he puts it

  1032. in another metaphor,

  1033. he says elders

  1034. are the sheepdogs

  1035. of the church.

  1036. What is a sheepdog?

  1037. You know,

  1038. a sheepdog,

1039. you've got the great shepherd,

  1040. Jesus Christ himself,

  1041. the great shepherd

  1042. of the sheep,

  1043. and then you've got

  1044. the sheep,

  1045. the people,

  1046. and then you've got

  1047. the sheepdog.

  1048. And the sheepdog

  1049. is not a master,

  1050. you know.

1051. What does the sheepdog do?

1052. The sheepdog has one ear

  1053. and one eye

  1054. always on the master.

  1055. Being commanded,

1056. being told where to go,

1057. being told how to serve.

  1058. And then the sheepdog

  1059. has his other eye

  1060. and his other ear

  1061. always on the sheep,

  1062. protecting the sheep,

  1063. nourishing the sheep,

  1064. caring for the sheep,

  1065. making sure the sheep

  1066. don't get captured

  1067. by the wolves,

  1068. right?

  1069. So elders,

  1070. they never come

  1071. for status,

  1072. no.

  1073. They mustn't

  1074. come for status,

  1075. they must come

  1076. as sheepdogs,

  1077. errand boys

  1078. for Jesus Christ,

  1079. the first servants.

  1080. What's a deacon?

  1081. A deacon

  1082. is not a position

  1083. of status.

  1084. There is no money,

  1085. there is no glamour.

  1086. I can tell you

  1087. at St. Columbus

  1088. there is no money,

  1089. there is no glamour,

  1090. there is only service

  1091. to be had

  1092. in this ministry.

  1093. And that means

  1094. that deacons

  1095. are not mere

  1096. building managers,

  1097. they're not finance team,

  1098. they're not a finance team,

  1099. they're not a board

  1100. who makes sure

  1101. that our liability

  1102. insurance

  1103. is covered fully,

  1104. and it is,

  1105. by the way.

  1106. We checked that

  1107. this week.

  1108. deacons,

  1109. I'll read to you

  1110. one book,

  1111. it said,

  1112. deacons are men

  1113. who desire to serve,

  1114. who embrace the faith,

1115. who live the Christian life

  1116. in an exemplary way,

  1117. especially

  1118. in being a model

  1119. for tangible,

  1120. concrete,

  1121. Christian love.

  1122. They're the first

1123. to show up in crisis,

  1124. they're the first

  1125. to serve.

  1126. That's a deacon.

  1127. Lastly,

  1128. finally,

  1129. the people themselves.

  1130. Now,

  1131. in Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6:3

  1132. verse 3,

  1133. there's a brief list

  1134. of qualifications

  1135. for what it takes

1136. to be a deacon here,

  1137. and this also,

  1138. I think,

1139. applies to elders as well.

  1140. So it says,

  1141. pick brothers

  1142. from among you,

  1143. seven men

  1144. of good reputation,

  1145. full of the Spirit

  1146. and wisdom.

  1147. So we learn there

  1148. that these men

1149. must have a good reputation,

  1150. they must be full

  1151. of the Holy Spirit

  1152. and of wisdom.

  1153. And then we read

  1154. from 1 Timothy 3 as well,

  1155. and if you just

  1156. cast your eyes

  1157. across 1 Timothy 3

  1158. and see some

  1159. of these qualifications,

  1160. okay?

  1161. And I won't go through

  1162. them in detail,

  1163. don't worry,

1164. but just what does he say?

  1165. He says,

1166. they must be above reproach,

1167. the husband of one wife,

  1168. sober-minded,

  1169. that means not given

  1170. to extreme behavior,

  1171. self-controlled,

  1172. respectable,

  1173. hospitable,

  1174. opening their homes

  1175. to people,

  1176. opening their homes

  1177. to strangers,

  1178. able to teach,

  1179. not drunk,

  1180. not a drunkard,

  1181. not constantly drinking,

  1182. not violent,

  1183. literally not getting

  1184. in fights,

  1185. not quarrelsome,

1186. not a lover of money,

  1187. gentle,

  1188. meek,

  1189. a manager of their

  1190. own household.

  1191. You can go through

  1192. these lists,

  1193. deacons not double-tongued,

  1194. not,

1195. as the King James put it,

  1196. interested in sordid gain,

  1197. right?

  1198. Interested in loving money

  1199. too much.

  1200. Now,

  1201. you could read

  1202. a list like that,

1203. full of the Holy Spirit,

  1204. wise,

  1205. above reproach.

  1206. The very last

  1207. qualification listed

  1208. in 1 Timothy 3

  1209. about deacons,

  1210. blameless,

  1211. and say,

  1212. where are these people?

  1213. Who are these people?

  1214. And,

  1215. that's so important

  1216. to ask,

  1217. that's so critical

  1218. and necessary to ask.

  1219. Let me give you,

  1220. let me just highlight

  1221. three qualifications

  1222. to look for.

  1223. Number one,

  1224. we're told here,

  1225. 1 Timothy 3,

    1 Timothy 3:8–10

  1226. verses 8 to 10,

  1227. and Acts 6.

1228. We see in Acts 6,

  1229. the apostles say,

  1230. we will not neglect

1231. the ministry of the word.

  1232. And then,

  1233. 1 Timothy 3,

  1234. 8 to 10,

  1235. a deacon must hold

1236. to the mystery of faith,

  1237. of the faith,

  1238. with a clear conscience.

  1239. What's that saying?

  1240. That's saying that

1241. the first thing to ask

1242. is in elders and deacons,

  1243. and your own heart

  1244. as a Christian,

  1245. if you're a Christian today,

  1246. do I hold

1247. to the mystery of faith?

  1248. What is that?

  1249. What is that?

  1250. He's talking there

  1251. about the doctrines

  1252. of the Bible.

  1253. Very simple.

  1254. He's saying,

  1255. are these men

  1256. that we're choosing,

  1257. are you holding fast

  1258. to the doctrines

  1259. that the Bible teaches?

  1260. The gospel itself

  1261. and the answers

  1262. to questions like,

  1263. who is God?

  1264. Who am I?

1265. What is wrong with me?

  1266. Is this world redeemable?

1267. How has Christ done it?

1268. How can I be saved?

  1269. What is to happen

1270. at the end of the world?

  1271. These are the doctrines

  1272. of the faith, right?

  1273. And so,

  1274. in the Bible,

1275. sometimes there is two uses

  1276. to the word faith.

  1277. There is the faith

  1278. that we believe by,

  1279. so your personal faith.

1280. When you rest in Christ,

  1281. that's faith.

  1282. You believe in more

1283. than your eye can see right now.

1284. Then there is the language

  1285. of the faith,

1286. the mystery of the faith.

  1287. What is the faith?

1288. It's not your personal faith.

  1289. It's the objective faith

1290. that can be written down on paper

  1291. and said,

1292. this is what the Bible teaches.

1293. So the first thing we learn

1294. is that an elder and a deacon

1295. and all of us are called

  1296. to open the Bible

  1297. and say,

1298. what does the Bible teach?

  1299. Orthodoxy,

  1300. we call it.

  1301. Right teaching.

  1302. That's a necessary step

  1303. in choosing any leader.

1304. That has to be there.

  1305. But secondly,

  1306. it says they must,

1307. and I'll just focus on this

  1308. because this encompasses

  1309. that whole list,

  1310. that elders and deacons

  1311. must be beyond reproach

  1312. or blameless.

  1313. That's the word that's used.

  1314. Now,

  1315. does this mean

1316. that all of these character qualities

1317. that we read about here

  1318. in 1 Timothy 3 and Acts 6,

1319. when we read the word blameless,

  1320. that's a summary word.

1321. We're looking for men without sin,

1322. that they've gotten past it,

  1323. you know,

  1324. they've beat it finally.

1325. And if it was saying that

1326. after 2,000 years of church history,

1327. we would still be looking forward

  1328. to the first ordination

  1329. of elders and deacons,

  1330. okay,

  1331. this is not saying

1332. that we are looking for perfect people,

1333. that we are looking for men without sin.

  1334. No,

  1335. not at all.

  1336. Instead,

  1337. if you could summarize

  1338. the whole list

1339. and the concept of above reproach

  1340. or blameless

  1341. in modern language,

1342. it would be something like this.

  1343. Not engaged

  1344. in two different lifestyles.

1345. Where on the one hand,

  1346. they're saying,

  1347. I'm an Orthodox Christian,

  1348. I'm a follower of Christ,

  1349. I'm walking the walk

  1350. in this community,

  1351. but then living

  1352. a completely different way

  1353. outside of it.

  1354. Not living differently privately,

  1355. not hypocritical.

  1356. That's the concept

  1357. of above reproach.

  1358. They're not living

  1359. two different lives.

  1360. In other words,

1361. you could say it like this,

1362. they are the biggest repenters

  1363. in the room.

1364. They're the first to repent.

1365. They're daily confessing their sin.

1366. They're daily looking to Christ

1367. once more for gospel grace.

  1368. They're daily coming

  1369. and saying,

  1370. I need thee,

  1371. oh,

  1372. I need thee.

  1373. Every hour,

  1374. I need thee.

  1375. That's what it means

  1376. to be above reproach.

  1377. Not hypocritical,

1378. but truly behind closed doors,

  1379. Christian,

  1380. walking with Christ,

  1381. in Christ,

  1382. towards Christ,

  1383. all the time.

  1384. Lastly,

  1385. thirdly,

  1386. Acts 6-3 summarizes it

  1387. so well,

  1388. I think,

1389. full of the Holy Spirit.

  1390. What does that mean?

1391. Full of the Holy Spirit.

1392. It means so many things.

  1393. We can't,

  1394. I can't,

  1395. you wouldn't allow me

  1396. to talk about it

  1397. too much right now,

  1398. but one thing

  1399. that means this

  1400. is that we're looking

  1401. for leaders

  1402. who are not interested

  1403. in serving

  1404. because they want

  1405. to be good people.

  1406. They're not interested

  1407. in serving

  1408. because they want

  1409. to earn their way

  1410. to heaven.

  1411. They're not interested

  1412. in serving

  1413. because they want

  1414. to be known

  1415. for status and reputation

1416. of being a great servant.

  1417. Or they're not interested

  1418. in serving

  1419. because they want

  1420. to be known

  1421. as an elder

  1422. in the community.

  1423. No,

  1424. none of that.

1425. Full of the Holy Spirit

  1426. means we're looking

  1427. for people

  1428. who have been transformed

  1429. by the grace

  1430. of Jesus Christ,

  1431. that the Holy Spirit

  1432. has encountered them.

  1433. They've had an encounter

  1434. with God

  1435. and they'll never

  1436. be the same

  1437. because of it.

  1438. That's what it means

  1439. to be full

  1440. of the Holy Spirit.

  1441. Think about Paul,

  1442. Paul who gives us

  1443. some of these lists

  1444. of qualifications.

  1445. Paul says,

  1446. I am the worst

  1447. of sinners,

  1448. but by the grace

  1449. of God

  1450. I am what I am.

  1451. Full of Holy Spirit,

  1452. elders and deacons,

  1453. men,

  1454. do you know,

  1455. men,

  1456. leaders in this room,

1457. do you know that you,

1458. have you had an experience

  1459. of grace that you're

  1460. daily being transformed

  1461. by saying,

  1462. I am the worst.

1463. I have the biggest need

  1464. of God's grace

  1465. in my life.

  1466. That's the leaders

  1467. we need.

  1468. That,

  1469. the Holy Spirit

1470. at work in your heart

  1471. that you can say

  1472. that every day.

  1473. Think about Peter.

  1474. He gives a list

  1475. of qualifications

  1476. for elder

  1477. in his letter.

  1478. Peter,

  1479. Peter,

  1480. he's the one

  1481. who committed treason

  1482. against Jesus Christ

  1483. and he was restored

  1484. by the grace

  1485. of the gospel

  1486. by the Holy Spirit

  1487. and encounter

1488. with God the Holy Spirit.

  1489. Elders and deacons

  1490. are not perfect people.

  1491. They are men

  1492. that are willing

  1493. to say alongside Paul,

  1494. I'm the first person

  1495. to express my need

  1496. of grace.

  1497. Close with this.

  1498. What we're looking for

  1499. is Christians.

  1500. Christians,

  1501. because elders and deacons

  1502. are just examples

  1503. and the calling

  1504. that we've read,

  1505. the list of qualifications

  1506. here in large measure

  1507. with some add-ons,

  1508. with some takeaways,

1509. this is what we all

  1510. want for ourselves.

  1511. people in need

  1512. of grace growing

  1513. and that's why

  1514. God has given

  1515. the church,

  1516. apostles,

  1517. elders,

  1518. prophets,

  1519. evangelists,

  1520. pastors and shepherds

  1521. and deacons

  1522. to equip the saints

1523. for the work of ministry.

  1524. The work of ministry

  1525. is grow in Christ

  1526. and serve people's needs

  1527. and it's all

  1528. of our calling.

  1529. So what we're looking

  1530. for here in this

  1531. is leadership

  1532. where we know

  1533. these people

  1534. do not have

  1535. functional saviors

  1536. other than Christ.

  1537. They're not

  1538. lovers of money.

  1539. They're not

  1540. so interested

  1541. in career

  1542. that they've been

  1543. taken away

  1544. from the work

  1545. of the ministry.

  1546. Non-functional saviors.

  1547. In other words,

  1548. they point us

  1549. away from themselves

  1550. and to Jesus,

  1551. the great deacon

  1552. and the great shepherd.

  1553. We have a letter

  1554. written by a man

  1555. named Clement of Alexandria.

  1556. Sorry,

1557. a lot of early church today.

  1558. We have a letter

  1559. from a man named

  1560. Clement of Alexandria

1561. in the early 2nd century.

  1562. He became a Christian

  1563. underneath the Apostle John.

  1564. So the Apostle John

1565. who wrote the Gospel of John,

  1566. he wrote the book

  1567. of Revelation

  1568. and he discipled

  1569. this young man

  1570. named Clement

  1571. and Clement

  1572. became a leader

  1573. in the church.

  1574. Clement tells a story

  1575. about the Apostle John,

1576. one of the early elders

  1577. of the church.

  1578. John had founded,

  1579. planted the church

  1580. in Smyrna.

  1581. We read about that

1582. in the book of Revelation.

  1583. Smyrna.

  1584. And John

  1585. had shared the Gospel

  1586. with a young man

  1587. who was an orphan.

  1588. And the young man

  1589. came to Christ

  1590. and started following Jesus.

  1591. And John

1592. had to be taken away

  1593. from pastoring the church

  1594. to another town

1595. for a long, long time.

  1596. So John left.

  1597. And Clement writes

  1598. that he turned

  1599. to the minister

  1600. that they had chosen,

  1601. the elder

  1602. that they had chosen

  1603. in Smyrna

  1604. to replace John

  1605. and said this,

  1606. In earnestness,

  1607. I commit this youth

  1608. to you

  1609. in the presence

  1610. of all here

  1611. and in the presence

  1612. of Christ.

  1613. Now what they did

1614. was they took this young man

1615. in front of the church.

  1616. It'd be like me

  1617. calling one of you

  1618. saying come up front

  1619. right now

  1620. and saying

  1621. I commit you

  1622. to Simon

  1623. in the presence

  1624. of all

  1625. to be discipled

  1626. for the rest

  1627. of your days.

1628. Don't let this man go,

  1629. this young boy

  1630. that's come to faith

  1631. from a rough background

  1632. come and disciple him.

  1633. John leaves.

  1634. He comes back

  1635. years later

  1636. and when he comes

  1637. back to Smyrna

  1638. he asks,

  1639. Clement records,

1640. where is the young man?

  1641. And we learn

  1642. that the young man,

  1643. the pastor says,

  1644. left the church

  1645. and he is now

  1646. living in a cave

  1647. outside of the city

  1648. with a gang

  1649. of the text says

  1650. bandits.

  1651. Classic word,

  1652. bandits.

  1653. And John says,

  1654. Clement records,

1655. you are a fine guard

  1656. of that brother's soul.

  1657. Sarcasm.

  1658. In the next breath

  1659. John said,

  1660. bring me a horse

  1661. and a guide,

  1662. lead me

  1663. to where he is.

  1664. And so they take

1665. John out of the city

  1666. to the caves

  1667. and John comes across

1668. a member of this gang

1669. and as soon as he's there

  1670. he says,

1671. take me to your captain.

1672. And the men are shocked,

  1673. this old man

  1674. coming to this group.

  1675. And he shows up

  1676. and there

  1677. the captain

  1678. is the young man

  1679. that he had discipled

  1680. and brought to Christ.

  1681. And Clement says

  1682. that as soon as

  1683. the young man

  1684. saw the apostle John,

  1685. he ran

  1686. in fear

  1687. and shame

  1688. and guilt

1689. as soon as he saw him

1690. and this is what John said,

  1691. my son,

1692. why do you flee from me,

1693. your father in the faith,

  1694. old,

  1695. unarmed?

1696. See my compassion for you,

  1697. my son.

  1698. Fear not.

  1699. You still have hope.

  1700. I will pray for Christ's forgiveness

  1701. for you.

  1702. If needs be,

1703. I will take your death

1704. as the Lord died for me.

  1705. For you,

  1706. my son,

1707. I will surrender my life.

  1708. Stop and believe

  1709. Christ has sent me

  1710. to you today.

  1711. Now,

  1712. there's a story

  1713. of forgiveness

  1714. and mercy

  1715. available to anyone

  1716. no matter what.

  1717. And there's a story

  1718. of a great elder.

  1719. Right?

  1720. That's a great elder.

  1721. The sheepdog.

1722. He won't let him go.

  1723. He's chasing after him.

1724. How did John become like that?

1725. He looked at the true deacon.

1726. He looked at the true shepherd,

  1727. the true deacon,

  1728. Jesus Christ,

  1729. in John 13,

  1730. on the night

  1731. that he was betrayed,

  1732. facing the horror

  1733. of the cross,

  1734. about to be murdered

  1735. for our sin.

  1736. What did he do?

1737. He got down on his knees

1738. in the most demeaning act

  1739. you could do

  1740. in the first century

  1741. and he washed

  1742. the dirty,

  1743. stinky feet

  1744. of the men

  1745. who were about

  1746. to betray him.

1747. He was about to go

1748. to the cross for them.

  1749. They were going

  1750. to betray him

1751. and he washed their feet

  1752. and he said,

  1753. I serve you.

  1754. I serve.

  1755. I came,

  1756. what did he say?

  1757. I came

  1758. not to be served

  1759. but to serve,

1760. to give my life away

1761. as a ransom for many.

  1762. Do you know

  1763. what that word

  1764. to serve is

  1765. when he says that?

  1766. It's the word deacon.

1767. I came to deacon for you.

  1768. John became like that

  1769. because he looked

  1770. at the ultimate deacon.

1771. He looked at the true elder,

  1772. the great shepherd

  1773. of the sheep.

  1774. In John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  1775. when this same one

1776. who died for your sins

  1777. rose again,

  1778. for your justification,

  1779. he was there

  1780. in the garden

  1781. and Mary Magdalene

  1782. comes to him

1783. and she doesn't recognize him

  1784. and she says,

  1785. is this the gardener?

1786. And what did he do?

  1787. He said her name,

  1788. Mary.

1789. And she would have been there

  1790. in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  1791. that we opened

1792. our call to worship with

  1793. when he said,

1794. my sheep hear my voice

1795. and when I call their name,

  1796. they come to me.

  1797. And all he does

  1798. is he says,

  1799. Mary.

  1800. And the blindness,

  1801. gone.

  1802. She, it says,

1803. we're told in the text,

  1804. she clung to him,

  1805. she embraced him,

  1806. she wrapped her hands

  1807. around him

1808. and would not let go.

  1809. And he said,

1810. you've got to let me go.

  1811. I've got to go

  1812. and send the spirit

  1813. to the church.

  1814. Right?

1815. She wouldn't let go of him.

  1816. Now look,

  1817. how did John become

  1818. an elder like that?

  1819. We need leaders

  1820. who help us all

  1821. cling to Jesus

  1822. and not let go

  1823. and say,

  1824. I won't let go.

1825. That's the leaders we need.

  1826. Let us pray.

  1827. Father,

1828. we pray for these shepherds,

  1829. these deacons,

1830. and we ask that you would

1831. teach us all as Christians

  1832. to cling to Jesus

1833. and to see the true deacon,

1834. the one who washed our feet

  1835. at the cross,

1836. the true elder and shepherd,

1837. the one who would run

1838. to the uttermost far country

1839. and give his life away

  1840. for the sheep, Lord.

  1841. Teach us the grace

  1842. that that is

1843. and then how to love

  1844. like that as well.

  1845. We pray for that

  1846. in Christ's name.

  1847. Amen.
