  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with

  11. the types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Standing, let's bow our heads in prayer for a moment.

  13. Father, we know from your Word that evil spirits often gather even in times when Christians gather

  14. in worship. And we know, Father, that at different times in our week and in our day, and maybe even in

  15. a very powerful way, Father, these evil spirits speak slander and lies to us and entice us and tempt us

  16. and belittle us and harm us. So Father, I stand before you with no power in or of myself, but I am your

  17. child by adoption and grace. And Father, in the name of Jesus, I ask that any demons that are present to

  18. us and those online, that Father, I ask in the name of Jesus that you would bind and silence those

  19. demons and take them far from this place, never to return. And that, Father, none of us would be left

  20. empty, but that your Holy Spirit might move within us and among us with might and power and deep

  21. conviction, that your Son's hand of grace would be upon us, and that your Holy Word and your Holy

  22. Gospel would enter very deeply into us, so that we might be free to love you and to worthily magnify

  23. your Holy Name. And we ask these things in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  24. Please be seated. For some of you may be present or online. I might have shocked you with that prayer

  25. a little bit, but I prayed the prayer, both because it's a good prayer to pray, and also because our

  26. scripture text is going to talk about topics like this. In fact, our scripture text today is going to

  27. look at two great enmities, ancient enmities that are dealt with by the gospel. And so, if you

  28. would help me and help yourselves, if you open your Bibles, we're going to look at Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  29. beginning at the first verse, Acts chapter 8, the first verse, as we continue our way through the

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  30. book of Acts. Now, just before I start reading this, two things of context. We haven't looked at Acts for

  31. a couple of weeks now. The first is, this is an eyewitness-based history of the first 30 years,

  32. approximately, of the Jesus movement that started after the death and resurrection and ascension of

  33. Jesus. And it's an eyewitness history, eyewitness-based history, written when many eyewitnesses

  34. were still alive. And so, one of the things which is remarkable about this book is that it withstood

  35. whatever challenges there would have been from eyewitnesses. It means we can have a high degree

  36. of confidence in it. And the second thing is that immediately before this, we were told the story

  37. of Stephen, the very first person who was killed for being a Christian. And that's what immediately

  38. goes just before it. And just to sort of catch you up on it, just went on right before this is at the end

  39. of, you know, how Stephen was stoned to death. And as Stephen is being stoned to death, the people doing

  40. the stoning bring their cloaks and robes and leave them with a young man by the name of Saul,

  41. who most people nowadays know by his Greek name. Saul would have been his Hebrew name or Jewish name,

  42. and Paul would have been his Greek name or Roman name. And the language implies that one of the guys

  43. organizing the stoning was this guy, Paul. And that's then how this chapter we're beginning,

  44. takes right on from that. This is what it says in verse one. And Saul, whom we know as Paul,

  45. and who we know eventually wrote a large part of the New Testament, that's the person that we're

  46. talking about, Paul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution

  47. against the church in Jerusalem. And they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and

  48. Samaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him.

  49. But Saul was ravaging the church and entering house after house. He dragged off men and women

  50. and committed them to prison. Now, just two things about this. We're going to talk about Saul more

  51. later. We're going to read about his conversion a couple of chapters after this. In fact,

  52. the very next chapter is how this man goes from being such a hater and a murderer to becoming a

  53. Christian. And we know from other places in the book of Acts that this ravaging include killing people.

  54. Paul laments in his letters and later on the Acts that he was responsible for killing men and women

  55. in the coming out of his great hatred of these Christians. And there's another thing which is

  56. important for the rest of the book of Acts and very important for us. I don't know if anybody here

  57. is Jewish. If you are, welcome. If you're watching, welcome. But we only became Christians because

  58. somebody told us about Christ. And somebody told them and somebody told them and somebody told them

  59. and somebody told them. And you go all the way back and you get back to the early apostles.

  60. And some of those people who told people who told people had to be what we now call missionaries.

  61. There's been this profound missionary expansion of the church. And one of the things in this story,

  62. this little brief introduction, which is very significant, and it's probably something that we don't

  63. reflect upon enough in our own lives. What Paul did and the other people involved in this was an evil.

  64. And nowhere in the Bible is that evil diminished. They say, oh, you know, it wasn't that bad.

  65. And in no ways do they say, well, because something good came out of it, it's not that. No, no, no, no.

  66. What they did was horrific and wrong. And there's never any moral confusion around that.

  67. But God used this evil act, which was designed to try to stop Christianity from growing.

  68. And God used that to grow the Christian movement. God used the evil for good purposes.

  69. In fact, what had happened is that when Jesus had ascended, if you go back and read the story,

  70. he said, listen, you guys, you need to go. Of course, you have to tell people about me in Jerusalem.

  71. But then after that, you need to go to Judea. And then after that, you need to go to Samaria.

  72. And then after that, you have to go to every single people group in the world.

  73. And here a year or so after this, they're all still in Jerusalem. They haven't been moving.

  74. And so God uses this terrible evil to scatter the church. Look again at what it says here.

  75. And they were all scattered throughout the regions. All probably just is a bit of a hyperbole,

  76. but it means many, many, many, many Christians scattered to Judea and Samaria.

  77. And what happened when they went scattered? They got scattered. Well, that explained in verse 4.

  78. Now, those who were scattered went about preaching the word. And that's a bit of an unfortunate word.

  79. Really what they say, it's the first place in the, not the first place, it's one of the places in the book of Acts where,

  80. well, basically what it means literally is they went gospeling.

  81. They just went gospeling. They shared the gospel as they went. Just ordinary people.

  82. You know, this is very important as well. It wasn't as if the apostles sat down and came up with a grand strategy

  83. and did fundraising and got prayer partners and organized mission teams and trained them.

  84. No, no. They just all went. And in a sense, what happens is it's organic, what we would now call organic growth.

  85. These people flee, but rather than fleeing and being terrified about telling anybody about Jesus and what he had done for them,

  86. how he, the life he lived, the miracles he performed, the brilliance of his teaching,

  87. the genius of his teaching, his death upon the cross, his resurrection, his ascension, the Holy Spirit,

  88. rather than being silent about that, they told people about it.

  89. That's what they did. Just ordinary people like you and me.

  90. And now what Luke, the writer of this eyewitness-based history does, is he gives one particular example,

  91. and he does this particular example.

  92. I'm going to talk about one type of ancient enmity, which is also discussed here,

  93. but because it deals with another very, very, very important ancient enmity,

  94. and something that happens in this forever changes the nature of the church and the Christian movement.

  95. Well, what is it? Let's look at verse 5.

  96. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ.

  97. And the crowds, with one accord, paid attention to what was being said by Philip

  98. when they heard him and saw the signs that he did.

  99. For even spirits, crying out with a loud voice,

  100. for, sorry, for unclean spirits or evil spirits or demons,

  101. crying out with a loud voice came out of many who had them,

  102. and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.

  103. So there was much joy in that city.

  104. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  105. The word sign is an easy word for us to be a bit confused about.

  106. If you talk to many people, many secular people, they'll say,

  107. you know, I took it as a bit of a sign that I should do this, you know.

  108. I'd been thinking about what to do, and then I was walking down the street,

  109. and I bumped into a person, and they started talking to me about, you know, this university.

  110. I took it as a sign that that's the university I should be going to.

  111. Or, you know, I was trying to figure out what to do about my investments,

  112. and then I came upon this article, and I took that as a sign that that's how I,

  113. you know, that's where I should put my money, and that's why it's been so successful.

  114. So many people in our culture still talk about signs,

  115. and it's a very ancient type of idea.

  116. And really what our secular friends and neighbors are referring to are omens.

  117. That's a very old word, that there's some omen,

  118. some communication that gives them a direction that they should go.

  119. Many Christians inadvertently talk like pagans looking for omens,

  120. and the Bible never promises Christians omens to give them direction like that,

  121. at least not in that particular sense.

  122. But what Luke is talking about here are miracles,

  123. and he's emphasizing something which is very important for us as Canadians to get our minds around,

  124. because we Canadians have developed into a type of people

  125. where we have boxes inside of our mind,

  126. and the boxes are sort of different areas of thinking or believing,

  127. and they don't communicate with each other.

  128. And there's been other times in history where human beings have been like that,

  129. but there's been times, especially under the influence of Christianity,

  130. where it's not like that,

  131. where you want to have just one mind, so to speak,

  132. one way of thinking.

  133. And so what it's saying is,

  134. because if you think about it,

  135. and I've talked about this before,

  136. I'm not going to talk about it very much.

  137. Like, if Jesus really did rise from the dead,

  138. that's a miracle, and it's also a sign.

  139. It points to something.

  140. It has meaning.

  141. And to my friends who are watching,

  142. or those of you who are here,

  143. it means that Islam's not true.

  144. It means that Buddhism isn't true.

  145. It means that Hinduism isn't true.

  146. It means that what most of us are taught,

  147. and what our culture primarily tries to talk about,

  148. which is that basically there's just a type of secular world

  149. where there's just matter and energy and people

  150. that you can touch and feel,

  151. that that's wrong.

  152. It's incomplete.

  153. Islam and Buddhism and Hinduism are incomplete in significant ways.

  154. Native spirituality is not true.

  155. Well, why?

  156. Well, because if that actually happened,

  157. it's not just sort of like you have a little box here

  158. for religious stuff or, you know, that type of stuff.

  159. You have another box here for how you do science,

  160. and then you have another box over here

  161. about how you do finances,

  162. and another box over here, another box over here,

  163. and how you think about politics,

  164. and they're all separate boxes,

  165. and they never talk to each other.

  166. That's to live an unexamined life.

  167. If these miracles have happened,

  168. it points to something.

  169. There's a particular meaning.

  170. And we're going to talk about that a little bit more in a moment.

  171. And that's why Luke and some of the different Bible writers,

  172. sometimes they'll use the word for miracle,

  173. but other times they'll use the word sign

  174. to refer to the miracle.

  175. Now, let's continue,

  176. because we're all in the middle of this story,

  177. and I've just said there's much joy in that place, right?

  178. Philip has come.

  179. He's telling, gospling.

  180. He's telling people about Jesus.

  181. And as he's telling people about Jesus,

  182. he's also dealing with unclean spirits

  183. that have been oppressing or even possessing human beings,

  184. and he prays and casts them out.

  185. And he's also been doing works of healing.

  186. In verse 9,

  187. but there was a man named Simon

  188. who had previously practiced magic in the city

  189. and amazed the people of Samaria,

  190. saying that he himself was somebody great.

  191. They all paid attention to him

  192. from the least to the greatest,

  193. saying,

  194. this man is the power of God that is called great.

  195. And they paid attention to him

  196. because for a long time

  197. he had amazed them with his magic.

  198. But when they believed Philip

  199. as he preached the good news

  200. about the kingdom of God

  201. in the name of Jesus Christ,

  202. they were baptized,

  203. both men and women.

  204. Now, just sort of pause here.

  205. And the word magic is an unfortunate word.

  206. It's very literal.

  207. But it's not like what you go,

  208. if you go to Las Vegas,

  209. I've never been to Las Vegas,

  210. but if you go to Las Vegas,

  211. I take it that there's lots of people

  212. who do magic shows.

  213. In fact, actually,

  214. you'll notice that the stage

  215. is set up a bit different than it was last.

  216. It's completely empty.

  217. Last week there was some curtains

  218. about halfway through the stage.

  219. That was because for the last week,

  220. you know, for a week and a half,

  221. there were magic shows

  222. every evening here

  223. at the Ottawa Little Theatre.

  224. In fact, last week,

  225. I met the magician,

  226. saw his gadgets

  227. that were all sort of stacked up

  228. all around there.

  229. And they do magic shows, right?

  230. Try to, you know,

  231. cut people in half

  232. and all that type of stuff.

  233. That's not what's meant here.

  234. What's meant is sorcery.

  235. Sorcery.

  236. What's meant is dealing

  237. with supernatural or spiritual beings

  238. to affect things that we see and touch,

  239. to affect human beings

  240. and affect events.

  241. It's curses and supposed blessings,

  242. but it's not curses and blessings

  243. as Christians understand them.

  244. It's by Philip had an ability

  245. to deal with supernatural

  246. or spiritual beings.

  247. Now, just, we're going to,

  248. let's just park here for a second.

  249. So the first thing I want to say

  250. is that I know that

  251. in a Canadian context,

  252. I don't know where you all are

  253. in terms of being a Christian or not,

  254. and I don't know,

  255. especially for those of you who are online,

  256. there's two different fundamental ways

  257. that Canadians look at this.

  258. There's a very significant number

  259. of Canadians who basically just say,

  260. la, la, la, la, la,

  261. yeah, yeah, yeah,

  262. angels, demons,

  263. blah, blah, blah, blah,

  264. that's just all mystical gobbledygook.

  265. It doesn't exist.

  266. We believe in science.

  267. We believe in reason

  268. and stuff like that.

  269. It's just complete nonsense.

  270. So what I'm going to say next,

  271. and you can send me an email if you want.

  272. Well, maybe in the weeks ahead,

  273. I'll talk to you about this.

  274. I'm not talking to you right now.

  275. I'm going to talk to that other

  276. very significant part of Canadian population

  277. that does believe that there are,

  278. in fact, spiritual or supernatural beings,

  279. which is a very, very significant number

  280. of Canadians who believe in casting spells,

  281. are okay with a seance,

  282. believe there's ways to use talismans

  283. to ward off curses

  284. or attacks by evil spirits,

  285. or to use crystals

  286. to channel spiritual powers,

  287. supernatural powers,

  288. and there's a large number of Canadians

  289. who are like that.

  290. One of my great failures

  291. in sharing,

  292. trying to talk about Jesus with people,

  293. and if by chance he's watching,

  294. I give a shout out to you.

  295. There's this fellow that I had

  296. for three months or so,

  297. four months,

  298. I had very deep conversations with him

  299. about the Christian faith,

  300. and this fellow had grown up

  301. in a completely atheistic culture.

  302. He'd grown up on the other side

  303. of the Iron Curtain,

  304. and he had a PhD in nuclear energy,

  305. and he was very, very good friends

  306. with another person in the coffee shop

  307. who was a very, very Christopher Hitchens

  308. type of atheist,

  309. very public,

  310. and I'd had lots of conversations with him,

  311. and the two of them were good friends.

  312. So I actually,

  313. for the first three months,

  314. I talked to this fellow,

  315. we'll call him Bob,

  316. as if he was an atheist.

  317. I mean, why not?

  318. He grew up in a communist country,

  319. he had a PhD in nuclear physics,

  320. and it looked like he was great friends

  321. with this Christopher Hitchens,

  322. Richard Dawkins type atheist,

  323. and so I would be talking to him

  324. about things,

  325. and our conversations

  326. were always sort of convoluted,

  327. and then one day,

  328. it dawned on me,

  329. and I asked him directly,

  330. he said,

  331. no, no, I'm not an atheist.

  332. I grew up with all that stuff,

  333. and it's bankrupt.

  334. It's completely wrong.

  335. I've completely and utterly rejected it.

  336. And I went, oh.

  337. In fact, he really believed

  338. in all sorts of spiritual beings.

  339. I've been trying to talk to him

  340. thinking it was this,

  341. but he was actually

  342. completely and utterly different.

  343. And in a sense,

  344. I don't want to make that mistake here.

  345. I know that there are Canadians

  346. who believe in all of these types of things.

  347. So just a couple of things.

  348. And by the way,

  349. one of the reasons,

  350. and I could see this with my friend,

  351. and I think it's one of the reasons

  352. that people start to investigate

  353. supernatural powers and spiritual beings,

  354. that many people sense

  355. the meaninglessness

  356. of a purely secular world.

  357. And many people, I think,

  358. feel a type of loneliness.

  359. They don't want to inhabit a world

  360. where there's just human beings

  361. that you can see and touch.

  362. They like the idea

  363. that there might be aliens

  364. that we might someday meet.

  365. They like the idea

  366. that there could be angels

  367. or good spirits

  368. that could help them.

  369. They like the idea

  370. that there's a type

  371. of a thickness to reality

  372. rather than just this thin gruel

  373. of thinking that all that exists

  374. is what we can touch and feel.

  375. And they like that.

  376. They long for it.

  377. And one of the things

  378. that you see here

  379. is that the gospel

  380. very humbly presents the idea

  381. that your longing

  382. for something more

  383. is a good longing.

  384. but it's ultimately

  385. a longing for God,

  386. for the triune God,

  387. for your creator.

  388. And once you come

  389. to the creator

  390. and are reconciled to him,

  391. you realize that, in fact,

  392. the world is more

  393. than matter and energy.

  394. There is a God

  395. who hears your prayers

  396. and you can pray to him.

  397. And you can pray to him

  398. about both the really big things

  399. in your life

  400. and the very, very small things

  401. in your life.

  402. And there is a God

  403. who actually hears you.

  404. And there are angels

  405. that intervene,

  406. but there's also,

  407. in fact,

  408. hostile spiritual beings,

  409. which we Christians

  410. call demons.

  411. When Christ is your,

  412. when the message

  413. that Christ is your savior

  414. is proclaimed,

  415. it's not the case

  416. that more people

  417. start to interact

  418. with the spirit world.

  419. In fact,

  420. you see in this story

  421. it's the complete opposite.

  422. as Jesus is proclaimed

  423. as savior and Lord,

  424. as he's proclaimed

  425. from having,

  426. being able to perform miracles

  427. and that even though

  428. he performed miracles

  429. and he could have avoided

  430. dying on the cross,

  431. it means for certain

  432. that when he died on the cross,

  433. he died on the cross

  434. purely because he loved you.

  435. People can put two and two together.

  436. If Jesus was able

  437. to calm the storm

  438. and do that,

  439. then surely he could make it

  440. that the soldiers

  441. couldn't put him on a cross.

  442. So he had to have died

  443. voluntarily on the cross

  444. purely and utterly

  445. because he loves you.

  446. And when he rises from the dead,

  447. then you know

  448. there has to be,

  449. in fact,

  450. a God that exists

  451. and you listen to why

  452. Jesus said he was doing

  453. what he was doing

  454. and what he was all about

  455. and you realize

  456. that Jesus has come

  457. from the creator

  458. of all things

  459. and the sustainer

  460. of all things

  461. on a rescue mission

  462. to rescue you

  463. because God loves you.

  464. He's for you.

  465. He wants you to know him.

  466. He wants you to know him

  467. and all the freedom

  468. that he brings.

  469. And so when the gospel

  470. is proclaimed,

  471. it's not that more people

  472. want to have dealings

  473. with whatever

  474. the spiritual world is.

  475. They come to understand

  476. that there is a devil,

  477. that there are demons.

  478. And as the gospel

  479. is proclaimed,

  480. people are delivered

  481. from demonic oppression

  482. and possession.

  483. and influence.

  484. That's what the gospel does.

  485. Christ has defeated Satan.

  486. His doom is certain.

  487. He still has power,

  488. but his doom

  489. is absolutely certain.

  490. This is the first

  491. of the ancient hostilities

  492. which is talked about

  493. in this story.

  494. That ever from the time

  495. of the Garden of Eden,

  496. there are unseen powers

  497. and forces

  498. and beings

  499. who hate human beings.

  500. And it is foolish

  501. for human beings

  502. to think that they can deal

  503. with such beings

  504. and tame them.

  505. these evil spirits

  506. will appear

  507. as light,

  508. as white,

  509. like white magic

  510. versus dark magic,

  511. black magic,

  512. good magic.

  513. They'll appear that way,

  514. but what's happening

  515. is that we aren't,

  516. no human being

  517. is actually taming

  518. these beings.

  519. No human being

  520. can do that.

  521. These evil spiritual beings

  522. are taming you,

  523. oppressing you,

  524. making you

  525. hate yourself

  526. and harm yourself

  527. and hate others

  528. and break up your family

  529. and see the world

  530. as a dark place.

  531. and the light of Christ

  532. and the love of Christ

  533. and the goodness of Christ

  534. and the mercy of Christ

  535. and the truth of Christ

  536. comes into your life

  537. to deliver you

  538. from all of that

  539. because Christ is for you.

  540. And so there's this

  541. ancient hostility

  542. which we need

  543. to be aware of.

  544. By the way,

  545. just as a bit of an aside

  546. on it,

  547. you know,

  548. C.S. Lewis

  549. talked about how

  550. there's two extremes.

  551. It's a very wise way

  552. of talking about it.

  553. There are Christians

  554. who see demons everywhere

  555. and they talk about

  556. like the demon of smoking

  557. and all that

  558. and they talk about

  559. demons too much.

  560. They actually end up

  561. almost having

  562. a type of paganist,

  563. pagan understanding

  564. of the world.

  565. The other extreme,

  566. which is the one

  567. that most of us

  568. are probably tempted to,

  569. is to never think

  570. of there ever being

  571. anything demonic

  572. affecting our lives

  573. or the lives of others.

  574. And that's also

  575. an improper extreme.

  576. we live as if

  577. we're rationalists

  578. or naturalists

  579. or technocrats.

  580. And I just want

  581. to encourage you

  582. to pray for me

  583. and us to pray

  584. for each other

  585. that the Lord

  586. would give us

  587. a discernment.

  588. Sometimes what

  589. we're dealing with

  590. in our life

  591. is in fact

  592. a type of demonic attack.

  593. Sometimes what we're

  594. dealing with

  595. in high places

  596. or low places

  597. or in work situations

  598. or in cultural situations

  599. is in fact

  600. a type of demonic attack.

  601. And we need

  602. to be willing

  603. to be seen

  604. as being

  605. ignorant fundamentalists,

  606. knuckle-dragging

  607. charismatics,

  608. and pray into it.

  609. the devil will create

  610. all sorts of

  611. odd ways

  612. for us to think

  613. about ourselves

  614. so that we won't

  615. want to actually

  616. just do something

  617. simple like this

  618. as to pray

  619. that in the name

  620. of Jesus

  621. whatever spiritual

  622. beings,

  623. demons,

  624. are involved

  625. that we ask

  626. the Father

  627. in the name

  628. of Jesus

  629. to bind them

  630. and cast them out

  631. and that the power

  632. of Christ

  633. will come instead.

  634. be a fool

  635. for Christ.

  636. It doesn't necessarily

  637. mean you have to do it

  638. in public.

  639. It means maybe

  640. in your private prayers

  641. that that's how

  642. you not only

  643. have to ask

  644. the Father

  645. for wisdom

  646. about what to say

  647. but you need

  648. to pray into it.

  649. Now there's

  650. a very,

  651. very

  652. other

  653. big thing

  654. which is going on

  655. which I haven't

  656. talked about

  657. because I want

  658. to get to the point

  659. that makes it

  660. very obvious

  661. and that's what

  662. it comes up here

  663. a little bit later.

  664. Let's,

  665. I think,

  666. I can't remember

  667. where I left off

  668. in reading.

  669. Let's read verse 11

  670. and they paid attention

  671. to him,

  672. that Simon,

  673. for a long time

  674. because he amazed

  675. them with his magic

  676. but when they believed

  677. Philip as he preached

  678. the good news

  679. about the kingdom

  680. of God

  681. in the name

  682. of Jesus Christ

  683. they were baptized

  684. both men and women.

  685. Even Simon himself

  686. believed

  687. and after being baptized

  688. he continued

  689. with Philip

  690. and seeing

  691. the signs

  692. and miracles

  693. performed

  694. he was amazed.

  695. See here we see

  696. that the power

  697. of the true

  698. and living God

  699. is greater

  700. than any demon

  701. than the devil

  702. himself.

  703. Philip,

  704. a purveyor,

  705. one who frequented

  706. the company

  707. of demons

  708. and amazed

  709. people

  710. is completely

  711. gobstruck,

  712. amazed

  713. when he sees

  714. the Holy Spirit

  715. move and work.

  716. Verse 14,

  717. Now,

  718. when the apostles

  719. of Jerusalem

  720. heard that Samaria

  721. had received

  722. the word of God

  723. they sent to them

  724. Peter and John

  725. who came down

  726. and prayed for them

  727. that they might

  728. receive the Holy Spirit

  729. for he had not,

  730. that is the Holy Spirit

  731. had not yet fallen

  732. on any of them

  733. but they had only

  734. been baptized

  735. in the name

  736. of the Lord Jesus.

  737. Then they,

  738. that is Peter and John,

  739. laid their hands

  740. on them

  741. and they received

  742. the Holy Spirit.

  743. Now,

  744. when Simon saw

  745. that the Holy Spirit

  746. had been given

  747. through the lay

  748. in honor of the

  749. apostles' hand

  750. he offered the money

  751. and we'll just sort

  752. of pause there.

  753. So this is a very

  754. puzzling text

  755. and even with,

  756. if those of us

  757. who are,

  758. I'm not going to talk

  759. about how there's

  760. two different groups

  761. within the Christian world

  762. that take this text

  763. and build a lot

  764. of doctrine on it.

  765. I'm going to say

  766. they're both wrong.

  767. That's not what

  768. the text is saying.

  769. But even if you read

  770. the book of Acts,

  771. it's a very odd text.

  772. If you go back

  773. and read Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  774. the very, very first

  775. Christian sermon

  776. on the day of Pentecost,

  777. Peter says that if you,

  778. you know,

  779. what's just happened,

  780. are we all speaking

  781. all these languages

  782. and all of these things,

  783. it's all because

  784. Joel has been fulfilled

  785. and the Holy Spirit

  786. has fallen upon us

  787. and that's why

  788. these things are happening.

  789. And then Peter says

  790. at the end,

  791. if you give your life

  792. to Christ,

  793. you also will receive

  794. the Holy Spirit.

  795. So here we have

  796. a whole pile of believers.

  797. They've given their life

  798. to Christ.

  799. They've been baptized.

  800. And somehow or another,

  801. there is this perception

  802. they haven't received

  803. the Holy Spirit.

  804. So what on earth

  805. is going on?

  806. Now,

  807. I think

  808. the way to understand

  809. that is this,

  810. and this is the second

  811. great enmity

  812. that's in the text.

  813. You see,

  814. if the gospel

  815. is going to go

  816. to the ends of the earth,

  817. that means,

  818. and to every single

  819. people group

  820. on the planet,

  821. it means it's going

  822. to go to people groups,

  823. let's just be honest,

  824. that we hate and detest.

  825. I know you're good Canadians

  826. and we don't hate

  827. or detest anybody,

  828. but yeah,

  829. blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,

  830. you're just not being honest.

  831. Okay,

  832. all I have to say

  833. for those of you

  834. who spend all your time

  835. watching the CBC,

  836. you've got to go

  837. to people who wear

  838. MAGA hats.

  839. Okay?

  840. You know,

  841. for those of you

  842. who like watching MAGA hats,

  843. you've got to go

  844. and you've got to go

  845. to people who have

  846. really multicolored hair

  847. and lots of things

  848. and are very, very pretty.

  849. You have to share

  850. the gospel with them,

  851. okay?

  852. And it doesn't matter.

  853. You can just multiply things.

  854. I've had,

  855. you know,

  856. we've had a multicultural

  857. congregation downtown

  858. for quite a few years

  859. and I've talked to people.

  860. I remember talking

  861. to one woman

  862. and I said,

  863. there's only this other

  864. person's Romanian

  865. and she's asked his name

  866. and when it turned out

  867. he was Russian-Romanian,

  868. you could just see

  869. her whole body tense up

  870. that she didn't want

  871. to talk to him.

  872. I remember talking

  873. to this one couple

  874. who were Czech

  875. and I said,

  876. oh,

  877. there's this other person

  878. from Czechoslovakia

  879. and they asked their name

  880. and they said,

  881. oh,

  882. they're Slovak

  883. and they,

  884. you could just see

  885. they all tensed up.

  886. The Czechs don't like

  887. the Slovaks

  888. and vice versa.

  889. You know,

  890. West Germans

  891. don't like East Germans.

  892. I mean,

  893. there's just this,

  894. in the case of

  895. what's going on here

  896. between Samaria

  897. and Jewish people

  898. in Jerusalem,

  899. there's two different

  900. ways to count it.

  901. One way to count it

  902. is a thousand years

  903. of enmity.

  904. One thousand years

  905. of enmity.

  906. And that thousand

  907. comes because,

  908. you know,

  909. the United States

  910. are friends to the south.

  911. They had a big civil war.

  912. Many,

  913. many people died.

  914. It ended up,

  915. though,

  916. that the country

  917. was united.

  918. The North won.

  919. The country was united

  920. under the North.

  921. And the United States

  922. is just one country today.

  923. But what happened

  924. is just after Solomon died,

  925. there was a civil war

  926. in what was Israel.

  927. And that war

  928. never came,

  929. like,

  930. that never came to an end.

  931. They never,

  932. the two groups

  933. never merged

  934. into one country.

  935. And for 300 years,

  936. there was frequent warfare

  937. between the north

  938. and the south.

  939. And then,

  940. in the 700 BCs,

  941. the northern kingdom

  942. was taken over

  943. by Assyria.

  944. And what the Assyrians did,

  945. which is a very common thing

  946. throughout history,

  947. is they took a whole pile

  948. of the Jewish people

  949. and they scattered them around

  950. throughout the Assyrian Empire.

  951. And they brought people

  952. from other places

  953. that they'd conquered

  954. and they put them there

  955. in the northern kingdom.

  956. So now you had a mixture

  957. of pagans and Jews

  958. living in what used to be

  959. the northern part of Israel.

  960. And they intermarried

  961. and their religions

  962. became intermingled.

  963. And so there's 700 years

  964. where the southern kingdom,

  965. Jerusalem,

  966. viewed these other people,

  967. now called Samaritans,

  968. as being half-Jewish,

  969. pagans,

  970. everything that they despised.

  971. And there were 700 years

  972. of hostility.

  973. I don't know how many of you

  974. have ever had to go

  975. to marriage counseling.

  976. One of the things

  977. they talk about

  978. in marriage counseling is,

  979. so you know,

  980. the man and the woman,

  981. they come into

  982. the marriage counseling

  983. and maybe not visible

  984. to the other person,

  985. they come pulling

  986. a whole pile of resentments

  987. about the other person.

  988. One person I heard

  989. use the analogy,

  990. it's as if they're pulling

  991. a little red wagon

  992. stacked up with resentments.

  993. And you both come

  994. to the session

  995. pulling your little wagons

  996. of resentments

  997. piled high.

  998. Well, imagine if you had

  999. 700 years of resentments.

1000. So the real danger was

  1001. that these Samaritans

  1002. would become Christians

  1003. and they would become

  1004. Samaritan Christians,

  1005. that from that point

  1006. in time on,

  1007. there would be

  1008. Samaritan Christians

  1009. and Jewish Christians.

  1010. Separate churches,

  1011. that dividing wall

  1012. of hostility and estrangement

  1013. between Samaritans

1014. and between the Jewish people

  1015. would not be removed.

  1016. In fact,

1017. it could even grow on,

1018. it might still be there today

  1019. amongst those

  1020. who are Christians.

1021. So I think what happened

1022. is that God did not want

  1023. that to happen.

  1024. I mean,

  1025. we might loosely talk

  1026. about Canadian Christians

  1027. and Nigerian Christians

  1028. or Indonesian Christians,

1029. but we don't really mean it

1030. in any type of serious way.

  1031. If we do,

  1032. it's a serious error.

  1033. There's no hyphenated Christians.

  1034. There's just Christians.

  1035. That's all there is.

  1036. There's just Christians.

1037. And so what God did,

  1038. somehow or another,

  1039. Philip had a discernment.

  1040. Our charismatic friends

  1041. would call it maybe

  1042. a word of knowledge,

  1043. that these Samaritans

1044. hadn't received the Holy Spirit.

1045. We're not told how Philip

  1046. came to that conclusion,

  1047. but he tested.

1048. He wanted to test it.

1049. So Peter and John come down.

  1050. They do an examination.

1051. They also come to this perception,

  1052. somehow or another,

  1053. that the Holy Spirit

  1054. hasn't fallen.

  1055. And Peter and John

1056. are the two leading apostles.

  1057. And so they pray.

  1058. And as they pray,

  1059. the Holy Spirit

  1060. falls upon the Samaritans.

1061. And the Bible doesn't say

  1062. how they know that.

  1063. They just say,

  1064. the Bible just says,

1065. if you go back and look at the text,

  1066. that they see something.

  1067. Now here,

1068. I'm just going to speculate.

  1069. Okay?

  1070. It's not the Bible.

  1071. It's just George speculating.

  1072. If you go back

1073. and you read the first book

  1074. that Luke wrote

1075. called the Gospel of Luke,

  1076. there's a scene in there

1077. where John is one of two people,

1078. but probably with the support

  1079. of all the apostles,

  1080. a Samaritan village

  1081. has treated Jesus badly.

  1082. So John says,

1083. and his brother says to Jesus,

1084. can we call down fire from heaven

1085. and have this place destroyed?

  1086. And Jesus says, no.

  1087. I don't know.

  1088. This is my speculation.

  1089. You know,

1090. in the day of Pentecost,

  1091. one of the signs

1092. that the Holy Spirit had fallen

1093. was that tongues of fire

  1094. came and fell

1095. on everybody in the room.

  1096. And I wonder

  1097. if what they saw

  1098. was that John

1099. finally got to call down fire

  1100. from heaven.

1101. But it wasn't fire of destruction.

  1102. It was the fire

  1103. of the Holy Spirit.

  1104. And they had

  1105. incontrovertible proof

1106. that the same Holy Spirit

  1107. that fell

  1108. because they were believers

  1109. in Jesus in Jerusalem,

  1110. the same Holy Spirit

  1111. that came upon

  1112. every Jewish Christian.

  1113. It's exactly

  1114. the same Holy Spirit

  1115. that falls

  1116. when the same gospel

  1117. is preached to Samaritans.

1118. And you're going to see

  1119. something very similar

  1120. when the next

  1121. great estrangement

  1122. happens in chapter 10

  1123. when the gospel comes

  1124. to the first pagans

  1125. to believe.

1126. And you're going to see

  1127. something very similar there.

1128. It has to have an apostle

  1129. and there's something

  1130. that makes it

  1131. clear

  1132. that these ancient divisions

  1133. in the gospel

1134. have come to an end.

  1135. You see,

  1136. there's one creator.

  1137. There is one creator.

  1138. One triune God

  1139. has created all things,

  1140. including human beings.

1141. And when human beings fell,

1142. we needed God to save us.

1143. And God does save us.

  1144. He sends his son.

  1145. He sends one savior

  1146. to one humanity.

  1147. And that means

  1148. there's only one gospel.

  1149. There's not a Muslim gospel,

  1150. a Buddhist gospel,

  1151. an African gospel,

  1152. a Canadian gospel,

  1153. a European gospel,

  1154. and Chinese gospel.

  1155. There's just one savior

  1156. and just one gospel.

1157. And when we hear that gospel

  1158. and receive Jesus

  1159. as our savior,

1160. he puts us into one kingdom.

  1161. One kingdom.

  1162. There's not gay Christians

  1163. and straight Christians.

  1164. There's just Christians.

  1165. When I was organizing

1166. a Dig and Delve event

  1167. and apologetics

  1168. about this issue

1169. and somebody said to me,

1170. well, what do you call

  1171. a gay Christian

1172. if you don't call him

  1173. a gay Christian?

1174. And I said I call him my brother.

  1175. That's what I call him.

  1176. My brother.

1177. He's my brother in Christ.

  1178. There's only one gospel.

1179. And it's for every single

1180. people group on the planet.

1181. So one of the things,

  1182. if the first thing,

  1183. just in closing,

1184. is that I think we need

1185. to be aware of the fact

  1186. that sometimes

1187. the devil can't be converted

1188. in the mystery of God's providence,

1189. at some point in time,

  1190. the angels that fell,

1191. there's no turning back for them.

1192. Now there's an ancient enmity

  1193. and we are involved

1194. in a spiritual war against them.

1195. But there's no equivalent war

  1196. for human beings.

  1197. And we need to,

  1198. I think,

  1199. have the discipline

1200. of praying for our rivals,

  1201. our persecutors,

1202. the people we don't like.

1203. If you are a very,

  1204. very committed follower

  1205. of Donald Trump,

  1206. you need to pray

  1207. for people you know

  1208. who are very,

  1209. very, very different

  1210. from you politically

  1211. and vice versa.

1212. Like it's good for your soul

1213. to pray for their conversion.

1214. I just want to close

  1215. with one thought.

  1216. I think it's very Christian

  1217. that we should pray

  1218. that Hamas

  1219. will be defeated

  1220. soon.

  1221. I also think

  1222. it's very important

  1223. that we pray

  1224. that people

1225. who are members of Hamas

1226. come to a saving faith

1227. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1228. And those are not

  1229. contradictory things to pray.

  1230. They are both

  1231. Christian ways

  1232. of praying.

  1233. You have to deal

  1234. with evil,

1235. but you also have to pray

  1236. that for those

  1237. who are consumed

  1238. with evil,

  1239. that they will come

  1240. to a saving faith

1241. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1242. I invite you to stand.

1243. Bow our heads in prayer.

  1244. Father, we give you

  1245. thanks and praise

1246. that for those of us

  1247. who are Christians

  1248. here or watching online

  1249. or downstream,

  1250. Father, we give you

  1251. thanks and praise

  1252. that somebody shared

  1253. the gospel with us

1254. and that your Holy Spirit

  1255. moved in our heart

  1256. that we said yes

  1257. to this good news

  1258. and that Jesus

  1259. became our Savior

  1260. and he also became

  1261. our Lord.

  1262. We ask, Father,

  1263. that you grant us

  1264. opportunities

  1265. and courage

  1266. to share

  1267. and bear witness

  1268. to Jesus to others.

  1269. And, Lord,

  1270. you know our hearts.

1271. You know we might pretend

  1272. that there aren't people

  1273. who are our rivals

  1274. or our enemies

1275. or who have hurt us

  1276. or that we are

  1277. prejudiced against,

  1278. but, Father,

1279. you know that's not true

  1280. within us.

  1281. And so, Father,

1282. we ask that on one hand

1283. you both gently convict us

  1284. of the truth

  1285. about ourselves,

1286. but that you would help us

  1287. to pray not only

  1288. that our tormentors

  1289. or persecutors

  1290. would stop it, Father.

1291. We know that you want us

  1292. to pray for that.

  1293. But help us, Father,

1294. to pray for their conversion.

  1295. And, Father,

  1296. we pray right now.

  1297. We ask, Father,

  1298. for the swift defeat

  1299. of Amas.

  1300. And we ask, Father,

1301. that many who are caught up

  1302. with that ideology,

1303. that they would repent of it,

1304. that they would put their faith

1305. in the Lord Jesus Christ

1306. as their Savior and Lord.

  1307. And we ask that

  1308. not just for those

1309. who are followers of Amas,

  1310. but for all involved

  1311. in that conflict,

  1312. for the Jewish people

  1313. and Muslims

  1314. who aren't members

  1315. of Amas.

  1316. Father, we pray

  1317. that many of them

1318. will come to a saving faith

1319. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1320. And we ask all these things

1321. in the name of Jesus,

  1322. your Son,

  1323. and our Savior.

  1324. Amen.

  1325. Amen.
