  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the

  11. types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Let's just bow our heads in prayer. Father, as we look at your Word, we ask that your Holy Spirit

  13. would lead us and guide us into all truth. Father, we know that we need the gospel and your Word to

  14. become more and more real to our hearts and our minds, so that we will have a reformation and

  15. renewing and revitalization of our mind, that we might know the truth, that we might avoid lies,

  16. that we might flee all foolishness and idolatry, and knowing you and knowing the truth,

  17. that we would learn to walk in freedom. Father, we ask that you would continue to do this wonderful

  18. work in our lives, and we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen. Please be seated. I think Victor forgot his

  19. glasses up here, actually. Or somebody did. When I was ordained 100 million years ago,

  20. in the Diocese of Ottawa at the time, I mean, the Diocese of Ottawa still exists, but I'm no longer

  21. obviously in the Diocese of Ottawa. They didn't pay starting clergy very much. We were paid quite

  22. poorly, actually, some of the lowest in the country. And I really felt that I was called to be a minister.

  23. But what I wasn't prepared for, I'd never owned a car before, by the way, actually. We'd just lived

  24. downtown, and we walked or took public transit everywhere. And one of the conditions of my

  25. employment was to get a car, which ended up being a rust bucket that kept breaking down.

  26. And I was prepared to learn all of the different, you know, stresses of being a minister, and how to

  27. be a minister, and how to lead people, and preach, and all of that type of stuff. But what caught me by

  28. surprise was struggling with having no money, with having very little money, and not being able to do

  29. very much about it. Because one of the conditions of my employment was that I had to have a car,

  30. and another condition of my employment was that I wasn't allowed to have another job.

  31. And I remember it was very hard. We weren't living paycheck to paycheck. We were,

  32. we would get into debt, and then, anyway, you don't have to hear all my tales of woe.

  33. But I have such clear memories of looking around. We were just living in a little dinky sub,

  34. little dinky condo subdivision. And, and it sort of felt as if it was impossible that I would ever get

  35. ahead. Like, I actually really remember, with the house that we were renting, has, it was a house that

  36. included a fridge and a stove. And I, I was worried that if I went to my, my next posting, and I had to

  37. buy a fridge and a stove, we couldn't afford to buy them, buy one. I, I remember very clearly how,

  38. how hard that was for us. And there's a lot of people in our, in our society today that would be

  39. very similar. And probably some of you have also lived through times like that. And sometimes the

  40. biblical teaching comes across to people in a way which is very dispiriting. It, it, it, it isn't

  41. hopeful, but it sucks hope out of you. And the story that we're about to look at today is a story

  42. that at first glance is one that would suck hope out of you and could easily dispirit you if you don't

  43. understand it in the right context. So it would be very helpful if you open your Bibles. We're going

  44. to be looking at Acts chapter 8 verses 26 and following. Acts chapter 8 verses 26 and following.

    Acts 8:26 Acts 8:26

  45. And what's just happened in, in this book, as I said before, Acts is, was originally written as an

  46. eyewitness-based history of the first 30 or so years of the Jesus movement. It was written while many

  47. eyewitnesses were still alive and could comment on it. We have this, this version of it. And, and so in

  48. this story, what's just happened is they've told this remarkable story of this fellow Philip who had

  49. to flee Jerusalem because of a profound persecution that was causing Christians to be thrown into jail or

  50. even killed. And he is one of the people who flees that. And as he flees, he tells people about the

  51. story of Jesus, why this story of Jesus, who he is, what he taught, what he, why he died, his resurrection,

  52. why this is profoundly good news for people. And he comes to this place, as I talked about last week,

  53. the main city in Samaria. And he tells this story. And as he's telling this story, God used him in a very

  54. powerful way. There were many miracles that were done through Philip's prayers. There were demons

  55. that were oppressing people, that people were released from demonization. And the number of

  56. Christians went from just Philip being there, and I'm guessing probably he had a wife and some kids,

  57. but that little family to all of a sudden, there was a very large number of people who all were now

  58. calling themselves Christians and, and really growing in the faith. And this is where the story

  59. takes up. That's sort of the context. And then we come to this very next verse, which is verse 26.

  60. Now an angel of the Lord, an angel of the Lord said to Philip, rise and go toward the south,

  61. to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert place. Now just sort of pause here.

  62. Here's where Christianity, how stories in the Bible can be very dispiriting to people.

  63. I mean, like just, just imagine for a second, we sent somebody out to be a church planter,

  64. and they go to a particular city and, and, and there's no, no like church. And then before you

  65. know it, there's like 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 people. And then all of a sudden, this person

  66. connected to our church calls us up and says, you know, I think God's telling me to go to this place.

  67. And, and we say, oh, I've never heard of that place. And he said, oh, well that, that's because

  68. it's a wilderness area. There's no people there, but I think God's calling me to go there. What,

  69. what advice would we give him? We'd say, I don't think you're hearing God right.

  70. Just be honest. That's probably what we would say. We'd probably say to him, it makes absolutely no

  71. sense to go from a place where there's, I don't know, a thousand people now who are following Christ,

  72. and you're having this great success. Why would you leave that and go now to a wilderness area,

  73. a desert area where there's no people? All there are people occasionally going down this road.

  74. This, this is the road that would take people from Jerusalem to Egypt and you have to go through

  75. a desert wilderness area. And we would say that that probably is just not hearing God.

  76. And, and part of the reason we think that way, well, you know, obviously you have to, you have to be

  77. careful when you think you're hearing from God. And, but, but we also have to be careful about our

  78. advice. You see, the, the primary cultural story of Canada, not the primary, one of the main cultural

  79. stories of Canada, the stories that we Canadians believe is that we want to get better. We want to

  80. progress. We want to, we want to, you know, we want to manage our time better. We want to get

  81. promotions. We want to have more money. We want to have a nice house. We want to have, you know,

  82. the right number of kids, you know, after we have the married, the right person. And, and so there's

  83. lots of stuff in the newspapers and other types of places. These are the types of degrees you should

  84. get. These are the workshops that you go to. This is how you learn how to network. This is how you

  85. learn how to manage your money. This is how you learn to manage your diet and manage your exercise

  86. and all of these types of things. And so the goal of all of it is, is that you, you will get those

  87. promotions. You will get those advancements. You will get the house. You will get all of these types

  88. of things. In some ways, my unhappiness when I was starting out ministry was because I believed that

  89. cultural story. And where I was right now, it didn't seem as if it would ever lead to it.

  90. And so because we believe this cultural story, when we look at something like this,

  91. God appearing, God telling Philip to leave all of this success to go to a desert place.

  92. Well, you know, we Christians, we go, okay, well, we have to believe this, but it's a very

  93. dispiriting type of thing. Is God calling me to diminish myself? Is God calling me to not take

  94. that promotion, but in fact to ask for a demotion? Like, is God asking me to do things that are going

  95. to diminish me, that are going to hurt me? And there have been lots of people within the church

  96. throughout the years who have in fact said that, right? There's been whole strains of spirituality

  97. that say that, you know, the highest Christian life is the life that you never marry.

  98. For instance, you take a vow of lifelong celibacy and you take vows of poverty. And those are people

  99. who do that are in fact the spiritually elite, and that's what you should strive for. So there have

  100. been voices within the church that have really emphasized this aspect of being profoundly counter-cultural.

  101. But both are in error in different ways. First of all, the Bible does not mean to dispirit you.

  102. It means to give you hope. It's not going to be up on the screen because I didn't think of asking her

  103. to put it up, but there's this very wonderful text in Romans, Romans chapter 15, verse 4 to 6,

    Romans 15:4–6

  104. that goes like this. It's a very good verse to memorize or to meditate upon.

  105. And it goes like this, Romans 15, verses 4 to 6.

    Romans 15:4–6

  106. For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction,

  107. that through endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures, we might have hope.

  108. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another,

  109. in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our

  110. Lord Jesus Christ. So God doesn't give stories like this to...

  111. He's giving us wisdom.

  112. Here's a couple of things.

  113. First of all,

  114. money and positions of power

  115. are in many ways, from a Christian point of view, neutral.

  116. We Canadians don't really accept that. I mean, we're good Canadians, so we would say that we accept that obviously people who live in a rich area of the city aren't better than people who live in a poor area of the city.

  117. That the single mom trying to deal with her kids and having to be on social assistance isn't somehow lower than the really well put together, polished people who live in a richer part of the city.

  118. As good Canadians, we wouldn't want to say that the poor person is defective in any type of way in a moral sense.

  119. But we're not really being honest when we say that.

  120. It's almost always the case that for those of us who have money, those of us who are healthy,

  121. those of us who have positions of power, that on one level, we and others do tend to think that we are somehow better than others.

  122. We do put moral worth on money.

  123. The Bible puts no moral worth on money.

  124. None.

  125. A rich person is not more moral than a poor person, per se.

  126. Having lots of money isn't making you more morally worthwhile than those who don't have as much money.

  127. In some ways, as well, even things like physical health and having power and prestige are in many ways morally neutral.

  128. As we all know, you can get sick and have all sorts of problems that will lead to your death.

  129. And that doesn't mean that you're somehow inferior to those who make lots of money.

  130. The Bible paints a very, very different type of picture.

  131. One of the things which makes it hard for us to understand the Christian faith is to understand that God is playing the long game with us.

  132. He's not giving you these instructions so that you will be massively successful in the way that Canadians understand success.

  133. God wants to form you to live with him for all eternity in the new heaven and the new earth.

  134. That's how God wants to form you.

  135. That's what he does.

  136. That's his long-term plan.

  137. I mean, we live in such an immediate time that to have our needs frustrated or to not be able to accomplish some of these things can be very discouraging.

  138. Like, it's very interesting.

  139. Like, in those times when I was very, very heavy-hearted about this, I didn't think of the fact that when I came to the church, there was no youth group.

  140. And by that point in time, this was about, like, I remember thinking about this a lot between my second and third year because I was thinking about the fact that I was going to have to move.

  141. But by the time I left that church, I had two youth groups, junior high and a high school group, centered around the Bible.

  142. It's funny.

  143. I didn't sort of think to myself, well, God's actually using me in this profound way to make a difference in these teenagers.

  144. All I was thinking about was that I couldn't afford a fridge because I couldn't afford a fridge or a new car.

  145. There was somehow something fundamentally bad with me, not that God was using me with having very little money to make a difference in the kids and whatever else I might have done, you know, with my sermons and other types of counseling.

  146. The point of all of this is that we're based on an understanding of human life that says that sometimes to get higher up, you've got to go down.

  147. Not sometimes.

  148. To go higher, you've got to go lower.

  149. It's teaching us that if I want to truly be tall, I will never be truly tall unless I bow to Jesus.

  150. That when I get on my knees before Jesus, I am taller than when I stand upright, ignoring Christ or even defying him or pursuing some type of idol.

  151. And that's because we understand that this profound story that is in fact the good news that makes us right with God is this.

  152. That God, the Son of God, in complete and utter harmony with the Father and with the Holy Spirit, in a union of profound love, that God, the Son of God, seeing this profound need of human beings made in God's image,

  153. and that we could not save ourselves, that God, that God, the Son of God set aside his appearance as God, his prerogatives, the worship that he was due, the honor that he was due.

  154. He set all of those things aside, but remaining fully God, he went down.

  155. He came down from heaven, so to speak.

  156. And he humbled himself to the point of taking into himself not just our human nature in an abstract sense, but that he came down so low that the one who created the entire universe,

  157. actually the flesh that he took into himself began not with a mighty warrior, not with the wisest, most powerful human being on the planet,

  158. not the strongest, but as I got, a fertilized cell in the womb of Mary.

  159. How low could God go?

  160. But the story continues.

  161. This wonderful story continues as God can go even lower than that.

  162. In fact, he will do lower than that to pursue you because he loves you.

  163. He will live a fully human life, but not as a rich person or a powerful person or a person with lots of prestige,

  164. but as a lower working class person.

  165. In an obscure part of the Roman Empire as a people who are conquered.

  166. And he will live that life until his public ministry begins when he is 30-ish.

  167. And then he will have this three or so year ministry where he performs miracles.

  168. He teaches wonderful things.

  169. He makes profound differences in people's lives.

  170. But it all culminates with while he's doing all of those things,

  171. not only are some people enamored with him and drawn to him,

  172. but many people, very powerful people, come to hate him.

  173. And so he comes to die upon the cross.

  174. And so we see that God, the Son of God, as he descends lower and lower to the point of being a zygote

  175. and then a human being, because all human beings begin as a zygote.

  176. That's how every human being is.

  177. We begin as a zygote and we go until we die.

  178. That's what it means to be a human being.

  179. And Jesus dies on the cross.

  180. He actually experiences death.

  181. And part of this profound good news is that we understand that when Jesus dies this death,

  182. that he himself had never rebelled against God.

  183. He had never done anything wrong in his entire life.

  184. There was no person who could say to him validly and fairly that he had ever hurt them.

  185. He had only done good.

  186. He had only told the truth.

  187. He had been, in a sense, pure.

  188. And so when he dies on the cross, this profound mystery is that he's dying as a sacrifice for you and me,

  189. who are far from perfect and who are all going to die and have done things that should not have been done

  190. and have failed to do things that should really be done.

  191. And understand shame and wrongdoing and being wronged and reproof and confusion and foolishness and idolatry

  192. and all of those things.

  193. And Jesus dies for us.

  194. He dies for you and me.

  195. And when he dies for you and me, it means that, in a very real sense,

  196. all of that comes on him and the punishment that you and I deserve is laid on him.

  197. And so he dies the death of a wrongdoer, even though himself, he has never done anything wrong.

  198. And he dies.

  199. And how much low can he go?

  200. He can go even lower than that because he goes and he dies and he tastes everything there is to taste of death.

  201. But at the end of tasting everything there is to taste of death, he rises from the dead.

  202. There have been many people who have died, clinically died, and come back to life.

  203. It's called near-death experiences.

  204. There's lots of medical literature around that that really happens.

  205. In fact, if you're curious about it, the latest Sean McDowell video is of a doctor who thought that those things didn't happen but studied it and now has come to the conclusion that people really do die.

  206. And have this, and then are in a period of time with death and then come back to this side of life and talk about it in ways that can't be explained scientifically.

  207. It must be something that happens.

  208. But Jesus is very different.

  209. He dies and experiences everything there is to experience of death.

  210. But then he emerges on the far side of death, alive.

  211. He does not die again.

  212. And now, so it is that even now, 2,000 years later, when you hear the story of Jesus and you know that he is alive, he's ascended into heaven, he's going to come again.

  213. You can call out to him and you can ask him that he will be your savior and your lord.

  214. That his death will stand for your, that I can call out to him and say, Jesus, may your death, your life and death and resurrection, may you take me for yourself.

  215. May it stand for me.

  216. May I be yours.

  217. May I believe that this is the plan of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and the action of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit so that human beings like me who are far from God can be made right with you.

  218. May it help me to, Father, I believe it.

  219. I want that.

  220. You've led me to want it.

  221. I give myself to you.

  222. And Jesus does.

  223. But notice, then, you come to have this understanding of that what reconciles you with God is this profound story of dissent, of dissent, of dissent, of dissent.

  224. But the result of all of that dissent is this offer that lifts you high.

  225. That it doesn't matter if you're a Down syndrome believer.

  226. It doesn't matter if you're on the edge of dementia.

  227. It doesn't matter if you're very rich.

  228. It doesn't matter if you're brilliant.

  229. It doesn't matter if you're poor.

  230. It doesn't matter if you're physically broken or physically excellent.

  231. Every single one of us, we were really made to know our creator and to be with him forever.

  232. And there is no other way of being made right with our creator other than putting our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  233. And when we put our faith and trust in him, the final word about you or I will not be physically broken, physically incapable, poor, broken, Down syndrome, dementia.

  234. The final word about us when we die is that Jesus will look at you and he will look at me and he will say,

  235. Welcome, daughter. Welcome, son. I am so glad that you are now here and you will be with me face to face forever.

  236. As the father smiles at us. That's the final word about us in Christ.

  237. So we're taught this very profound story of...

  238. See, in a sense, what happens is in our Canadian cultural story, we want to progress, we want to progress, and we want to progress.

  239. But unless that's tempered by some just very, very basic virtues, unless it's tempered by us being willing to die to things, die to our anger, die to our greed, die to wanting to despise others, die to seeing people as rivals.

  240. Unless we're willing to die to those things, even our possessing more money or getting more power will often come at the expense of just becoming more alone.

  241. And living a more empty life.

  242. And so what we see here in this particular story, the very heart of the story, there's another heart that we're going to get to in a moment.

  243. The whole story begins

  244. because God

  245. tells Philip to do something

  246. that in his flesh would not seem right.

  247. But the Lord asked Philip

  248. to die to himself and say yes.

  249. And that's how the story begins.

  250. This act of him

  251. being willing to say yes

  252. to the Father's command.

  253. You know,

  254. the whole Christian life is that God...

  255. It isn't that God wants to diminish you.

  256. The whole Christian life is that

  257. we don't realize

  258. the way to real health.

  259. Every single person in Canada wants to be

  260. generous.

  261. But nobody wants to give away their money.

  262. And we all want to have

  263. power, but we also want to have power

  264. and have people like us.

  265. We want to have our own way,

  266. but we'd like to be married and have a love relationship.

  267. You know, you go on and on and on and on.

  268. There's all these things that

  269. require us

  270. to have a type of death

  271. if we're to actually succeed

  272. in getting what we really want.

  273. And the gospel gives a context for that.

  274. It gives a story.

  275. And not just a story,

  276. but a presence.

  277. Christ is with us.

  278. See, here it's a very, very different thing

  279. if Christ says to me,

  280. George, just remember who I am.

  281. How much I love you.

  282. Like, I love you so much, George,

  283. that I left heaven for you.

  284. I became a human being for you.

  285. I took my human nature,

  286. your human nature.

  287. I suffered for you.

  288. I died on the cross for you.

  289. I tasted all of death for you.

  290. I did all of that for you

  291. because I love you.

  292. And I am the God,

  293. the Son of God.

  294. I, with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

  295. I'm the one who created all things

  296. and saw human beings when they fell

  297. and brought ruin into their own life.

  298. And I pursued you because I love you.

  299. So will you trust me

  300. with my teaching on money?

  301. Will you trust me

  302. that you have to give

  303. some of your money away

  304. for the local church

  305. and for the furtherance of the gospel

  306. and for the relief of the poor?

  307. Will you trust me?

  308. Will you trust me

  309. in the area of your sexuality?

  310. Will you trust me?

  311. Will you trust me

  312. in how you spend your time

  313. that your life will be not

  314. more unfulfilled

  315. because you give up time on Sunday

  316. and for spiritual friendships?

  317. Will you trust me?

  318. Will you trust me?

  319. Remember how much I love you.

  320. You see, that's the context for it.

  321. You see, human beings

  322. in their flesh

  323. understand on one level

  324. that there's this riddle

  325. or enigma in existence

  326. that you can get all the promotions

  327. and make all the money

  328. and end up with a terribly alone

  329. and meaningless life

  330. and die with no friends.

  331. That you can get to that point

  332. where you're not even sure

  333. if you can marry somebody

  334. if they want to marry you

  335. because of your money

  336. or if they might want to marry you

  337. because they actually love you.

  338. And you can get in positions of power

  339. and you wonder

  340. if people ever tell you the truth

  341. or are they just trying to flatter you?

  342. And so they understand

  343. there has to be some types of deaths

  344. that go on

  345. where you don't get your own will all the time,

  346. where you listen,

  347. where you're kind

  348. and where you're generous.

  349. And one of the things

  350. which the gospel sets forth

  351. is that we have this person, Jesus.

  352. We have his teaching

  353. and his example

  354. and his presence

  355. to help us navigate those things

  356. and to set really helpful limits on them.

  357. So the story continues

  358. and it continues

  359. in addressing another very important fear

  360. and need that we have.

  361. So you look at it again,

  362. God asks us,

  363. God asks Philip

  364. to do something that makes,

  365. well, it just doesn't seem right.

  366. But Philip trusts the Lord

  367. that the Lord Jesus Christ loves him

  368. and that the Lord Jesus Christ

  369. is preparing Philip

  370. to spend eternity with him.

  371. And so in verse 27,

  372. Philip rises and goes.

  373. And there was an Ethiopian eunuch,

  374. a court official of Candace,

  375. queen of the Ethiopians,

  376. who was in charge

  377. of all her treasure.

  378. He had come to Jerusalem

  379. to worship

  380. and was returning

  381. seated in his chariot

  382. and he was reading

  383. the prophet Isaiah.

  384. And the Holy Spirit

  385. said to Philip,

  386. go over and join this chariot.

  387. So Philip ran to him

  388. and heard him reading

  389. Isaiah the prophet

  390. and asked him,

  391. do you understand

  392. what you're reading?

  393. Just as a bit of an aside,

  394. I'm not up to date

  395. on all my scholarship,

  396. but I understand

  397. that in the Confessions

  398. of Augustine

  399. written in the,

  400. I think,

  401. late 300s,

  402. there's a famous scene

  403. in there

  404. where he observes

  405. somebody reading silently.

  406. And it,

  407. I believe,

  408. unless it's been changed,

  409. it's one of the first times

  410. in literature

  411. that people observed

  412. somebody reading silently.

  413. They hadn't figured that out.

  414. Everybody read out loud.

  415. Nobody would have just sat

  416. in the living room

  417. reading quietly.

  418. They would have read out loud.

  419. That's just how you read.

  420. That's how he knew.

  421. He didn't have a word

  422. of knowledge in this case.

  423. He just knew,

  424. he knew the Ethiopian eunuch

  425. was reading Isaiah

  426. because he could hear

  427. him reading it

  428. and he knew the Bible.

  429. He knew the quote.

  430. So Philip,

  431. verse 30 again,

  432. heard him reading Isaiah

  433. and the prophet

  434. and asked,

  435. do you understand

  436. what you're reading?

  437. And the eunuch said,

  438. how can I,

  439. unless someone guides me?

  440. And the eunuch

  441. invited Philip

  442. to come up

  443. and sit with him.

  444. Now the passage

  445. of the scripture

  446. that he was reading

  447. was this,

  448. like a sheep

  449. he was led

  450. to the slaughter

  451. and like a lamb

  452. before its shearer

  453. is silent,

  454. so he opens

  455. not his mouth.

  456. In his humiliation,

  457. justice was denied him.

  458. Who can describe

  459. his generation

  460. for his life

  461. is taken away

  462. from the earth?

  463. And the eunuch

  464. said to Philip,

  465. about whom,

  466. I ask,

  467. does the prophet

  468. say this

  469. about himself

  470. or about someone else?

  471. Now just sort of

  472. pause here

  473. for a second.

  474. See,

  475. one of the things

  476. which is very profound

  477. about this story,

  478. which we desperately

  479. need to hear,

  480. see,

  481. people can be

  482. in very,

  483. very large churches

  484. and they can hear

  485. about all these

  486. successful Christians

  487. and all these other

  488. things that are going,

  489. but they themselves

  490. might feel,

  491. does God actually

  492. really care about me?

  493. See,

  494. one of the things

  495. which is so important

  496. about this story

  497. is that Philip

  498. leaves the nameless

  499. crowds to go

  500. to one man

  501. because this one man

  502. matters to God.

  503. Right?

  504. You matter to God.

  505. You and your uniqueness,

  506. your particularity,

  507. your struggles,

  508. your sins,

  509. your hopes,

  510. your dreams,

  511. your fears.

  512. You matter to God.

  513. Christ comes

  514. not to pursue

  515. humanity in general.

  516. He doesn't come

  517. to pursue a crowd.

  518. He came

  519. to pursue

  520. Louise,

  521. to pursue

  522. Josiah,

  523. to pursue

  524. Diane,

  525. to pursue

  526. George,

  527. to pursue

  528. Victor.

  529. He comes

  530. to pursue

  531. you.

  532. And we see

  533. this very powerfully

  534. formed just in

  535. that the story

  536. structures us

  537. to understand

  538. that he comes

  539. and seeks

  540. particular people.

  541. but he also

  542. comes to

  543. pursue

  544. those people

  545. who,

  546. through their

  547. own actions

  548. or just

  549. through the way

  550. that life

  551. has beaten

  552. them up,

  553. now feel

  554. very far

  555. from God.

  556. And that was

  557. this Ethiopian

  558. eunuch.

  559. You have to know

  560. a few other things

  561. in background

  562. to understand

  563. this.

  564. This Ethiopian

  565. eunuch

  566. was obviously,

  567. even though he

  568. was from

  569. Ethiopia,

  570. he was part

  571. of the Jewish

  572. world.

  573. He might have

  574. been born

  575. Jewish or

  576. whatever it is,

  577. he was part

  578. of the Jewish

  579. world.

  580. And a eunuch

  581. means that he's

  582. been castrated.

  583. And in the

  584. religious practices

  585. of the day,

  586. it means that he

  587. could never

  588. become a full

  589. Jew.

  590. He could never

  591. worship at the

  592. heart of worship

  593. in the Jewish

  594. faith.

  595. He couldn't.

  596. And in fact,

  597. whether he

  598. had originally

  599. made this

  600. decision,

  601. he could never

  602. make decisions

  603. all the time,

  604. you know,

  605. I could pursue

  606. the promotions

  607. and pursue all

  608. of those things

  609. and it might

  610. damage my

  611. marriage,

  612. but at the

  613. end of the

  614. day,

  615. I'd much

  616. rather have

  617. these promotions

  618. than my

  619. marriage.

  620. People don't

  621. normally consciously

  622. say that,

  623. but they

  624. unconsciously act

  625. that way.

  626. Sometimes they

  627. consciously say

  628. it.

  629. And they end

  630. up making

  631. choices and

  632. choices and

  633. choices,

  634. which leaves

  635. them alone.

  636. And in that

  637. particular world,

  638. today you

  639. could be the

  640. head of the

  641. Privy Council

  642. or the head

  643. of Apple and

  644. you don't have

  645. to be castrated.

  646. But in those

  647. days you had

  648. to be.

  649. And he

  650. would have

  651. just said,

  652. you know,

  653. it's worth

  654. it.

  655. It's worth

  656. it.

  657. The food,

  658. the cultural

  659. experiences,

  660. the allure of

  661. power,

  662. the clothing,

  663. the house,

  664. the servants,

  665. it's worth

  666. it.

  667. And so maybe

  668. sometime after

  669. that he now

  670. has a bit of

  671. a serious

  672. reflection upon

  673. all of that.

  674. Those of you

  675. of a certain

  676. age remember

  677. Paul Henderson

  678. and Paul Henderson

  679. became very famous

  680. in Canada in the

  681. 70s.

  682. He was already

  683. a good hockey

  684. player,

  685. but he got

  686. the tie-breaking

  687. goals to help

  688. Canada come

  689. back and beat

  690. the Soviet Union

  691. in the first

  692. ever contest

  693. between Canada

  694. and the Soviet

  695. Union in hockey.

  696. He got the

  697. three goals

  698. that won the

  699. last three games

  700. that they needed

  701. to win the

  702. series.

  703. He won all

  704. of them.

  705. He got all

  706. of those goals.

  707. In fact,

  708. Wilfrid Laurier

  709. University used

  710. to be called

  711. Waterloo Lutheran

  712. University,

  713. and this was

  714. all just after

  715. Paul Henderson

  716. did these things.

  717. They did a poll

  718. of the university

  719. students about

  720. how they wanted

  721. to rename

  722. the university,

  723. and the clear

  724. winner was that

  725. it should be

  726. called Paul

  727. Henderson

  728. University.

  729. But the

  730. Board of

  731. Governors

  732. nixed it and

  733. said it had

  734. to keep the

  735. same letters,

  736. so they made

  737. it Wilfrid

  738. Laurier

  739. University.

  740. But Paul

  741. Henderson

  742. became a

  743. Christian because

  744. he'd reached

  745. the pinnacle

  746. of hockey and

  747. fame, and

  748. he said,

  749. is that all

  750. there is?

  751. Is that all

  752. there is?

  753. Is that all

  754. there is?

  755. And so this

  756. man who's

  757. willingly probably

  758. pursued castration

  759. so he could have

  760. this senior level

  761. of government

  762. comes later on

  763. to this tragic

  764. state of affairs

  765. where he

  766. now wants

  767. meaning, but

  768. he actually,

  769. when he goes

  770. to Jerusalem

  771. to worship,

  772. and he's

  773. rich enough

  774. that he can

  775. afford a

  776. scroll of

  777. Isaiah,

  778. which means

  779. he's become

  780. very wealthy

  781. to be able

  782. to afford

  783. his own

  784. scroll of

  785. the book

  786. of Isaiah,

  787. but when he

  788. went there

  789. he couldn't

  790. be fully in

  791. the temple,

  792. he had to

  793. be in the

  794. outskirts

  795. in the

  796. temple of

  797. the Gentiles.

  798. He longed

  799. to be close

  800. to God

  801. but could

  802. not be

  803. close to

  804. God.

  805. And so

  806. this part

  807. that he read,

  808. and he

  809. probably was

  810. reading it

  811. over and

  812. over and

  813. over again

  814. because when

  815. it says

  816. in verse

  817. 33,

  818. in his

  819. humiliation

  820. justice was

  821. denied him,

  822. who can

  823. describe his

  824. generation for

  825. his life is

  826. taken away

  827. from the

  828. earth?

  829. What that

  830. is actually

  831. saying is

  832. this man

  833. died before

  834. he could

  835. have any

  836. children,

  837. no progeny,

  838. nobody to

  839. follow him.

  840. That's what

  841. that means.

  842. He died so

  843. it means he

  844. will have no

  845. children or

  846. grandchildren or

  847. great-grandchildren.

  848. He dies in a

  849. sense childless.

  850. And this is

  851. obviously,

  852. that's partially

  853. why he's

  854. probably saying,

  855. who's he

  856. talking about?

  857. Is the prophet

  858. talking about

  859. himself or

  860. someone else?

  861. Because in

  862. some ways he

  863. understands he's

  864. talking about

  865. himself.

  866. You see,

  867. this is the

  868. other thing why

  869. this story is

  870. so profound

  871. about how

  872. in fact there's a

  873. God who wants

  874. to bring the

  875. losers of the

  876. world, the

  877. ones who've been

  878. defeated and

  879. crushed by the

  880. Canadian cultural

  881. story, and

  882. been created by,

  883. that have been

  884. devastated by the

  885. idols that we

  886. have followed.

  887. followed.

  888. And now at

  889. some point in

  890. time we feel

  891. like our life

  892. is over and

  893. we're a failure

  894. and we're far

  895. from God and

  896. far from our

  897. hopes and far

  898. from our

  899. dreams and

  900. God comes and

  901. says there can

  902. be new life

  903. for you.

  904. There are many

  905. people in this

  906. connected to our

  907. church who would

  908. love to have

  909. children and

  910. can't.

  911. Either because

  912. they can't find

  913. someone to marry

  914. or because they

  915. married and

  916. discovered that

  917. they were

  918. childless.

  919. they just

  920. can't have

  921. children.

  922. And if that

  923. children are a

  924. great good but

  925. if children become

  926. an idol to you

  927. and the Canadian

  928. cultural story

  929. becomes an idol to

  930. you, it deepens

  931. your disappointment

  932. and that feeling

  933. like you just are

  934. second or third

  935. or fourth or

  936. fifth class.

  937. And it can be

  938. very, very hard.

  939. I speak as a

  940. man who felt

  941. that how could I

  942. ever afford a

  943. fridge?

  944. And we also

  945. live at a

  946. cultural moment

  947. where many

  948. people in

  949. pursuit of

  950. what they think

  951. is the good

  952. life are

  953. turning themselves

  954. into eunuchs.

  955. And all of the

  956. smart people of

  957. Canada say that

  958. if you as a

  959. young man want

  960. to cut off

  961. your penis,

  962. that's a good

  963. thing and will

  964. support you.

  965. If you're a

  966. woman and you

  967. want to remove

  968. your breasts

  969. and remove

  970. your vagina,

  971. that that's a

  972. good thing for

  973. you.

  974. And those

  975. things, the

  976. statistics show

  977. they're still

  978. depressed afterwards.

  979. And you end up

  980. feeling far from

  981. God.

  982. And you end up

  983. feeling far from

  984. God.

  985. And you end up

  986. feeling far from

  987. God.

  988. And you end up

  989. feeling far from

  990. God.

  991. And you end up

  992. feeling far from

  993. God.

  994. This part that he

  995. is reading is from

  996. one of the most,

  997. maybe the most

  998. profound part.

  999. You should go

  1000. back and read

  1001. it later.

  1002. Isaiah 52,

    Isaiah 52:13

  1003. verse 13 to

  1004. chapter 53,

  1005. verse 12.

  1006. It's maybe that

  1007. nobody reading that

  1008. can understand that

  1009. it refers to

  1010. anybody other than

  1011. Jesus.

  1012. And it describes

  1013. this good story

  1014. that I began the

  1015. whole sermon with

  1016. about how Jesus

  1017. comes and

  1018. pursues you.

  1019. And he doesn't

  1020. look at you and

  1021. say, I'm not

  1022. interested in you

  1023. because you're

  1024. childless.

  1025. I'm not interested

  1026. in you because you

  1027. haven't been able to

  1028. marry.

  1029. I'm not interested

  1030. in you because

  1031. you've made

  1032. yourself into a

  1033. eunuch.

  1034. I'm not interested

  1035. in you because

  1036. you've ruined your

  1037. life with alcohol.

  1038. I'm not interested

  1039. in you because

  1040. you've ruined your

  1041. life by pursuing

  1042. power and prestige.

  1043. Jesus doesn't

  1044. come and say that.

  1045. He comes and

  1046. says, dear one, I

  1047. love you.

  1048. I died for you.

  1049. And if you put

  1050. your faith and

  1051. trust in me, you

  1052. will not be far

  1053. off.

  1054. I will bring you

  1055. to the Father's

  1056. heart.

  1057. the Holy Spirit

  1058. will indwell you.

  1059. And in me, you

1060. will be part of my

  1061. people and you

1062. will be part of the

  1063. new heaven and the

  1064. new earth that goes

  1065. on for all eternity.

  1066. And that's my

  1067. heart for you.

  1068. That's my heart

  1069. for you.

  1070. Verse 35,

  1071. then Philip opened

  1072. his mouth and

  1073. beginning with the

  1074. scripture, he told

  1075. the eunuch the good

  1076. news about Jesus.

  1077. And as they were

  1078. going along the

  1079. road, obviously

  1080. there's some time

  1081. that's passed, an

  1082. hour, two hours,

  1083. three hours.

  1084. They come to some

  1085. water and the eunuch

  1086. said, see here is

  1087. water.

  1088. What prevents me

  1089. from being baptized?

  1090. He's given his life

  1091. to Christ.

  1092. And the eunuch commands

  1093. the chariot to stop

  1094. and they both went

  1095. down into the water,

  1096. Philip and eunuch.

  1097. And Philip baptized the

  1098. eunuch.

1099. He was not far from

  1100. God.

  1101. He belonged to Christ.

1102. He was close to the

  1103. Father's heart.

  1104. He knew the Father's

  1105. profound love for him.

  1106. You see, in Christ,

  1107. the final word about

  1108. you will not be

  1109. failure.

  1110. It's hard when God

1111. asks us to do things

1112. in his word that goes

  1113. against our

  1114. inclinations.

1115. And a lot of times

  1116. we don't do it.

  1117. And hopefully over time

1118. we learn to do it

  1119. more and more.

  1120. but he, and he

  1121. hasn't given us

  1122. stories like this so

  1123. we will feel like

  1124. failures, but to

  1125. encourage us to

  1126. remember Jesus, to

  1127. remember that in

  1128. Christ we can come

  1129. together on a Sunday

  1130. morning saying

  1131. together, Father, you

  1132. are our refuge and

  1133. our strength.

  1134. I haven't had a good

1135. week and I give you

  1136. thanks and praise that

  1137. in Christ you will

  1138. never let me go.

  1139. And I give you

  1140. thanks and praise that

1141. my final destiny is to

  1142. be yours.

  1143. Thank you that

1144. Jesus will be with me

  1145. this week and let's

  1146. live this week.

  1147. I thank you.

  1148. Make your hope of

1149. glory more real to my

  1150. life.

  1151. That's the Christian

  1152. life.

  1153. That's the power of

  1154. this story.

  1155. Invite you to stand.

  1156. Just whether here or

  1157. online, just want to

  1158. encourage you.

  1159. Jesus, I want to

1160. give you a prayer of

  1161. this.

1162. And I want to say to

  1163. you, Jesus, I've heard

  1164. this about you.

1165. Be my Savior and my

  1166. Lord.

1167. Help me to lay my

1168. whole life, give me my

  1169. whole life to you.

1170. Be my Savior and Lord.

  1171. And Jesus takes you.

1172. And in some ways the

  1173. rest of the Christian

1174. life is also just saying

  1175. that.

1176. Not that we become his.

1177. Once he takes us, he

  1178. never lets us go.

  1179. But, you know, that's

1180. in a sense what we do

  1181. on a Sunday.

1182. Jesus, I want you to,

1183. you know, this week I

1184. often live by my own

  1185. desires and my own

  1186. plans.

1187. And I would have been

1188. way wiser if I just

  1189. trusted you as my

  1190. Savior and Lord.

  1191. So, Father, forgive me.

1192. Help me to walk this

1193. week trusting you as my

  1194. Savior and my Lord.

1195. You begin and you walk

  1196. the same way.

  1197. Let's pray.

  1198. Father, thank you so

  1199. much for Jesus.

  1200. Thank you that he

1201. doesn't just care for us

1202. as a church or because

  1203. we're all from Canada,

  1204. we're all from Africa,

1205. we're all from Europe or

  1206. wherever, Father, that you

1207. love each of us particular

1208. and in an individual way

1209. that you know us not in

1210. general, but you know us.

1211. You see our lives, you

1212. see our past, you see

  1213. our present, you see

1214. our future and you love

1215. us and you are for us.

1216. You are for us in your

  1217. Son.

1218. And we ask, Father, that

1219. this story of who Jesus

1220. is and what he did for

  1221. us, that that might

  1222. become more and more

1223. real to our hearts and

1224. form how we view money

1225. and how we view sexuality

1226. and how we view family

  1227. life and careers and

  1228. time.

1229. Father, may that form us.

1230. And Father, we give you

  1231. thanks and praise that

  1232. it's not just a story that

1233. informs us, but that the

1234. Holy Spirit is present in

1235. our lives and we believe

1236. in Christ and that Christ

  1237. walks with us.

1238. And Father, we ask that you

1239. help us to keep in step

1240. with the Spirit and to

  1241. trust that our loving

1242. Savior, Jesus, is with us

1243. as we do each day and we

1244. do each moment in each

  1245. day.

1246. So Father, we ask that you

1247. help us to die to ourself

1248. and obey you, learning to

  1249. live for your glory,

1250. knowing that as we bow to

1251. Jesus, you make us tall.

1252. And we ask all these things

1253. in the name of Jesus, your

  1254. Son and our Savior.

  1255. Amen.

  1256. Please be seated.

1257. We don't have any formal

  1258. intercessions, but we should

1259. spend some time in prayer.

1260. So if you would just take a

1261. posture of prayer, let's just,

1262. what I'm going to say is,

  1263. Lord, in your mercy.

1264. And when I say, Lord, in your

1265. mercy, if you would respond,

  1266. hear our prayer.

  1267. Let's pray.

1268. Father, we give you thanks

1269. and praise for the country

  1270. of Canada.

1271. We know, Father, that there

1272. are things in Canada which

  1273. are very sinful.

1274. But Father, we give you

1275. thanks so we can be part of

  1276. this country.

1277. We commend into your hands

  1278. our Prime Minister, the

  1279. Premiers of Ontario and

  1280. Quebec, the Mayors of

  1281. Ottawa and Gatineau.

1282. We commend into your hands

1283. all who work on Parliament

1284. Hill and all who work in the

  1285. civil service.

  1286. Father, we commend them

  1287. into your hands.

1288. We commend into your hands

1289. the business leaders and the

1290. leaders of the arts and

1291. education and all that make

  1292. Canada Canada.

1293. Father, we commend them into

  1294. your hands.

1295. We ask that your Holy Spirit,

1296. Father, would help them to

1297. pursue that which leads to

1298. true peace and prosperity and

1299. justice and mercy in our

  1300. country.

1301. And that our prosperity would

1302. be used, Father, to help those

1303. around the world who are in

  1304. great need.

1305. Lord, in your mercy, hear our

  1306. prayer.

1307. Father, we know that there are

  1308. many Christians who are

  1309. suffering persecution.

1310. We know that today in places

1311. like India and Pakistan, in

1312. North Korea and in Iran and

1313. China, that there is much

1314. persecution of our brothers and

  1315. sisters in Christ.

1316. Father, we commend these, our

1317. brothers and sisters, into your

  1318. hands.

1319. We ask that you would protect

1320. them, that you would sucker

1321. them, that you would give them

  1322. courage.

1323. Father, we are humbled by their

  1324. courage.

1325. And we ask that you would turn

  1326. their persecutors away from

  1327. persecution and turn their

  1328. hearts to Jesus.

1329. Lord, in your mercy, hear our

  1330. prayer.

1331. Father, we give you thanks and

  1332. praise for our church.

1333. We thank you, Father, that we are

1334. not the only church in the city.

1335. We ask that you would grow the

1336. bonds of affection between our

  1337. church and all gospel-shaped,

  1338. gospel-sharing churches in this

  1339. city.

1340. And we ask, Father, for

1341. ourselves, that you would grant

1342. us reformation and renewal and

  1343. revival.

1344. Lord, in your mercy, hear our

  1345. prayer.

1346. Father, we thank and praise you

1347. for churches around the world.

1348. We thank you for our unity with

1349. churches all over, Father, through

  1350. the Global Anglican Futures

  1351. Movement.

1352. We thank you, Father, that we are

  1353. part of a diocese.

1354. But most of all, Father, we thank

  1355. you for missionaries.

1356. And we ask your blessing upon

1357. those in our congregation that

1358. have gone out to be missionaries and

1359. those whom we support as

  1360. missionaries.

1361. Lord, in your mercy, hear our

  1362. prayer.

1363. Father, you have put us in

  1364. positions where we have

1365. obligations to pray for people,

1366. for our neighbors, our family

  1367. members, our friends, our

  1368. co-workers.

1369. Father, we ask that you teach

1370. us and help us to pray for

  1371. them.

1372. Lord, in your mercy, hear our

  1373. prayer.

1374. Father, we pray for those who do

1375. not yet know Jesus as Savior and

  1376. Lord.

1377. We ask that you would lead us to

1378. pray for certain people and give

1379. us opportunities to share the

1380. good news of Christ, not trusting

1381. in our own power or wisdom, but

1382. trusting in your word and the

1383. moving of your Holy Spirit.

1384. Lord, in your mercy, hear our

  1385. prayer.

1386. Father, we come before you with

1387. our own needs, needs for

1388. direction, needs to help to deal

1389. with alcohol or addiction, needs

1390. to do, Father, around our personal

1391. lives and decisions about jobs and

1392. futures, particular sins that are

  1393. really oppressing us.

1394. Father, we commend ourselves into

1395. your hands at this time.

1396. We bring our own needs before

  1397. you.

1398. We ask that your Holy Spirit

1399. would move and work in our

1400. lives so that we might live free

  1401. lives for your glory.

1402. Lord, in your mercy, hear our

  1403. prayer.

1404. We ask all of these things in the

1405. name of Jesus, your Son and our

1406. Savior, our only mediator and

  1407. advocate.

1408. We ask all of these things in the

  1409. name of Jesus.

  1410. Amen.

1411. We ask all of us for the next

  1412. Lord, our welcome.

1413. We ask all this things in the

1414. frente e every time that we

1415. pray for our people, our

1416. Lord, our mercy with us through

1417. our God, the Father, our

1418. Lord, the Lord with theеци師, your

1419. 쪽, your heart, the God, our

1420. God is the continuit of the

1421. kingdom to the kingdom of desire and

  1422. the soul, our trust.

  1423. It's so sweet.

1424. We ask all the people that they

  1425. read to do today.

  1426. Remember, call on faith,

1427. the Lord, what we are

1428. going to happen to be

  1429. крепcity in the guild.
