  1. Amazing, beautiful chapter of the Bible,

  2. which does lots of things for us,

  3. but it certainly is gonna do this for us, I think.

  4. It's gonna complete God's story of salvation.

  5. So there's a story that runs all the way through the Bible,

  6. from creation and Genesis to new creation and revelation.

  7. And here we are going to find the great happily ever after

  8. that your heart and mind deep down longs for,

  9. of a universe reborn and made perfect,

  10. of paradise regained and restored,

  11. of a glorious reunion that lasts for all eternity.

  12. Here too, we're gonna find a chapter

  13. that captures some of our deepest human longings.

  14. We're all different and we're all from different places,

  15. but there are certain things that we have in common.

  16. The desire for a love that is permanent.

  17. The desire for a glorious home and a homecoming.

  18. And for a life that is truly satisfying.

  19. And we're gonna see in all of this

  20. that Christ Jesus is the key.

  21. So the book of Revelation has kept on reminding us

  22. that Jesus is the one who died and then rose again,

  23. who returned to heaven and who will return one day.

  24. And now he's pictured in wonderful ways.

  25. He is the bridegroom who loves his bride.

  26. He is the one who prepares an eternal home

  27. for all of God's children.

  28. And he is the one who supplies the life that satisfies.

  29. And so taken together,

  30. this chapter as we come towards the end of Revelation

  31. reminds us that our future as followers of Jesus

  32. is glorious.

  33. And it's glorious because he, Jesus, is glorious.

  34. I hope as well that as we get into some of the details

  35. of this chapter,

  36. it's gonna stir up certain emotions.

  37. Perhaps it's gonna stir up for us a sense of hope

  38. as we're being presented with a world of perfection,

  39. a world of perfect love.

  40. Here is the world we all want.

  41. Here is the goal.

  42. But it might also,

  43. and this isn't necessarily a bad thing,

  44. it might stir up a sense of homesickness in us,

  45. especially as the people of God.

  46. As we recognize that there is this world

  47. that we all want the way that we want it to be,

  48. but often don't we find it so different.

  49. And we struggle in the tension

  50. that life is not supposed to be like this,

  51. we often think.

  52. Difficulties in our relationships,

  53. difficulties and frustrations with work,

  54. in our health, even in our churches.

  55. But Jesus offers promise,

  56. he says, that when he comes back,

  57. that's when everything is made new.

  58. Here is when we will enter into the life

  59. that we were made for.

  60. Here is where we will live forever

  61. in this world that we all want,

  62. when everything sad will forever come untrue.

  63. And remember that this book

  64. and these pictures are given in the first instance

  65. to help Christians who are struggling

  66. and who are suffering.

  67. And it's a way for God to say to us,

  68. remember, it is all worth it.

  69. But maybe as we read this,

  70. maybe especially if you're not a Christian,

  71. you're new to church,

  72. you're thinking, is this too good to be true?

  73. Is this something that we can trust?

  74. Does it all sound a bit pie in the sky?

  75. And so it's really important

  76. before we get into the details

  77. to just consider who is speaking.

  78. In a way, this is very similar

  79. to what we said to the children.

  80. Verses five and six,

  81. we have God seated on the throne saying,

  82. I am making everything new.

  83. He presents himself as the eternal,

  84. the almighty king.

  85. And it's this one who says,

  86. it is done.

  87. And it's this God who speaks truth from heaven,

  88. who invites us to come with our thirst

  89. and to be satisfied.

  90. He is the one who makes everything new

  91. and he invites us to listen in,

  92. to receive what he has for us.

  93. So our plan this morning,

  94. we could spend forever on this.

  95. So this is a wonderful chapter.

  96. We're going to take three big themes.

  97. We're going to take the theme of the wedding

  98. and the home and the garden.

  99. I think God's glory and the gospel is so good

  100. that he gives us different pictures

  101. and maybe our hearts will go to one

  102. or other of these this morning.

  103. And we're going to think about

  104. how do they kind of speak to our longings

  105. and how does Jesus, the Savior,

  106. fulfill the story?

  107. How does Jesus bring us into this world

  108. that we all want?

  109. So that ultimately, all of us,

  110. whoever we are,

  111. we would take the invitation

  112. to trust in Jesus,

  113. that we would be enjoying life with him today,

  114. looking ahead gladly for the promise

  115. of eternal life with him.

  116. Okay, so we're going to do this very briefly.

  117. The first story that we see in our chapter

  118. is the story of a wedding

  119. in the first four verses of Revelation 21.

  120. And that takes us back to creation,

  121. Genesis 1 and 2.

  122. There was also a wedding.

  123. There was Adam and Eve.

  124. Remember that God gave a wife to the man.

  125. And he gave to them a marriage with a mission.

  126. He said, here is your calling.

  127. Fill the earth, rule over the earth,

  128. spread the glory of God

  129. and enjoy life with me while you're doing it.

  130. But into that perfect picture came the devil,

  131. came the serpent.

  132. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  133. into the marriage came sin.

  134. As the man and the woman disobey God,

  135. ultimately they want to replace God,

  136. to reject his rule.

  137. And the moment that that happens

  138. and sin comes,

  139. relationships break down.

  140. They're now hiding from God.

  141. They feel a sense of shame together.

  142. There's blaming.

  143. There's pain.

  144. There's the loss of the presence of God.

  145. But God comes and he calls to them.

  146. And even in that,

  147. it's a reminder that God desires

  148. to invite people again.

  149. He would have a people whom he loves.

  150. And that's the story of the Old Testament.

  151. See, if we go all the way

  152. towards the end of the Old Testament,

  153. we go to a prophet like Hosea.

  154. Hosea is a really dramatic book.

  155. God says to Hosea,

  156. Hosea, I want your marriage

  157. to be like a picture

  158. of my relationship with Israel.

  159. Hosea was a good husband

  160. married to an unfaithful wife.

  161. And God said,

  162. that's like my people.

  163. They commit spiritual adultery,

  164. turning to follow other gods,

  165. turning to make alliances

  166. with other kings.

  167. God was showing love and faithfulness,

  168. but again,

  169. the people of God

  170. turning their back.

  171. It's a picture of the heart of sin.

  172. God offers us himself.

  173. God offers us love,

  174. but we turn our back

  175. because we want to be in charge.

  176. We think other things will satisfy.

  177. But God's purpose

  178. to have a people whom he will love

  179. and be with together forever

  180. does not fail in the end.

  181. Look at chapter 21 of Revelation.

  182. We're reminded that this is new creation.

  183. I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

  184. The first things have passed away.

  185. The world has been remade.

  186. The curse of sin is gone.

  187. There's no more sea.

  188. The sea is always a symbol

  189. of chaos and evil.

  190. So when sin and evil are done away with,

  191. there's going to be another wedding.

  192. God again is going to give a wife.

  193. Look at verse 2.

  194. The holy city comes down

  195. out of heaven from God,

  196. prepared as a bride,

  197. beautifully dressed for her husband.

  198. And God pronounces his blessing

  199. over this marriage.

  200. God's dwelling place is now among the people.

  201. They will be his people.

  202. God himself will be with them

  203. and be their God.

  204. This is the goal of salvation,

  205. that God would live with his people

  206. in a perfect world forever.

  207. And there's this wonderful picture

  208. of intimacy in this marriage

  209. that we have a Savior who is so good

  210. that he comes so near

  211. that he wipes every tear,

  212. that he removes everything that spoils.

  213. No more sorrow,

  214. no more grief,

  215. no more death.

  216. The powerful King ensures

  217. that he will be with

  218. his bride made beautiful forever.

  219. Now what's the significance of this

  220. for you and me today?

  221. It's significant because

  222. we are made for relationship.

  223. All kinds of relationships.

  224. And they are a source of profound joy

  225. and happiness to us often.

  226. Think about the picture of the passage.

  227. Some of us here will have had

  228. the joyful anticipation

  229. of being a bride waiting

  230. for the wedding day.

  231. And that sense of here is a love,

  232. here is a sense of permanence,

  233. here is a place of security.

  234. But we also know in our relationships,

  235. disappointments,

  236. and griefs,

  237. and losses,

  238. and longing.

  239. We know that death casts its shadow,

  240. that death always comes.

  241. But we are made for relationship,

  242. and most of all,

  243. we're made for relationship with God.

  244. And the Bible says to us,

  245. the love that you and I long for,

  246. that we can spend maybe all our life

  247. looking for,

  248. it's found in God and in His Son,

  249. the Lord Jesus.

  250. Here is a love that is eternal

  251. and unbreakable.

  252. Here is the one whose love never fails,

  253. who will never disappoint.

  254. Here is the promise of perfect

  255. and forever love in Jesus.

  256. And that tells us that the Savior,

  257. Jesus,

  258. is so important to this story.

  259. And actually by God's design,

  260. Ephesians 5 tells us,

  261. every time we go to a wedding,

  262. every marriage that we see,

  263. speaks to us something of the gospel,

  264. speaks to us something of the relationship

  265. between Jesus and His church.

  266. A bridegroom is supposed to love,

  267. and to sacrifice,

  268. and to serve as a picture

  269. of what Jesus does

  270. for His bride,

  271. His people.

  272. There is union,

  273. and there is love,

  274. and there is joy,

  275. and there is safety.

  276. Now how does Jesus show

  277. His undying love and commitment

  278. to His bride,

  279. His people,

  280. the church?

  281. What we do in a wedding ceremony

  282. is we give wedding ring,

  283. but Jesus gives something much more.

  284. He gives His own body.

  285. That it's the broken body

  286. and the shed blood

  287. of the Lord Jesus on the cross

  288. that is a sign

  289. of the covenant commitment of God

  290. to save and to love

  291. a people for Himself.

  292. And the Lord Jesus

  293. is such a wonderful bridegroom

  294. that He removes all the ugliness,

  295. all our sin,

  296. all our shame,

  297. and He clothes us

  298. with His perfect righteousness

  299. so that the church

  300. and all of our sin,

  301. in the end,

  302. we will be this radiant bride

  303. for Jesus.

  304. And so the Savior invites us

  305. to look to Him,

  306. to trust Him,

  307. and to find that one love

  308. that never fails,

  309. that never disappoints.

  310. That's one way of thinking

  311. about the story of the Bible.

  312. Here's the second way.

  313. It's the story of a home

  314. and a homecoming.

  315. This is a kind of a theme

  316. that runs through

  317. the rest of chapter 21.

  318. But again,

  319. just to take us back

  320. to the beginning

  321. of God's story,

  322. in the beginning,

  323. God made the world

  324. and He made,

  325. He planted a garden

  326. called Eden.

  327. And this was a special place.

  328. This was like a garden sanctuary

  329. because God came

  330. and God met

  331. with Adam and Eve there.

  332. And God planted Adam and Eve

  333. in that garden

  334. and it was a place of beauty

  335. and they had everything

  336. they needed

  337. and His glory

  338. was on full display.

  339. Imagine there,

  340. I don't know what your first home

  341. was like,

  342. but that was Adam and Eve's

  343. first home.

  344. And it was wonderful

  345. and it was wonderful

  346. because God was present.

  347. He would come,

  348. as it were,

  349. to walk with them

  350. and to talk with them.

  351. And so they were

  352. to live their lives

  353. working and worshipping

  354. and resting

  355. and serving,

  356. loving and enjoying

  357. relationships with one another

  358. but with God

  359. in this true

  360. and beautiful home.

  361. But if we know the story again,

  362. we know that they failed

  363. to look after that home.

  364. They failed to guard

  365. and keep it.

  366. And so again,

  367. the serpent,

  368. the snake,

  369. the devil came,

  370. temptation came,

  371. sin came,

  372. and the consequence

  373. was they were sent

  374. out of that home

  375. into exile.

  376. But again,

  377. God's goal

  378. that He would be God

  379. with His people,

  380. that would continue.

  381. And key to this whole promise

  382. of God living with His people

  383. were a couple of different structures.

  384. One was a tent

  385. called the tabernacle

  386. and one was a mighty building

  387. called the temple.

  388. But they were both

  389. in different ways

  390. sanctuaries,

  391. places where the God of glory

  392. lived among His people.

  393. So if you wanted

  394. to meet with God,

  395. to be with God,

  396. you had to go to this tent

  397. or you had to go

  398. to this temple.

  399. And in both the tabernacle

  400. and the temple,

  401. there was one particular room

  402. that was especially significant.

  403. It was called

  404. the Holy of Holies.

  405. We're told the dimensions

  406. of this room.

  407. In the tabernacle,

  408. it was 10 cubits

  409. by 10 cubits

  410. by 10 cubits.

  411. It was a cube.

  412. By the time

  413. they were building the temple,

  414. it became 20 by 20 by 20.

  415. Okay, so there's this cube,

  416. this box.

  417. And once a year,

  418. one man,

  419. the high priest,

  420. could go in

  421. and meet with God

  422. and offer sacrifice.

  423. And it was the job

  424. of the people

  425. to look after

  426. and to be holy

  427. around this home.

  428. But again,

  429. they would fail

  430. to guard and to keep.

  431. Instead,

  432. they would set up idols.

  433. They'd be half-hearted

  434. in their worship.

  435. They'd be divided

  436. in their loyalty.

  437. And in the end,

  438. again,

  439. God's people

  440. would lose their home.

  441. And in the end,

  442. the prophets tell us

  443. that God's glory

  444. would depart.

  445. And so the story

  446. of the Bible,

  447. by the time we get

  448. to the end

  449. of the Old Testament

  450. before Jesus comes,

  451. the people of God

  452. are left with a longing.

  453. Will God return?

  454. Will God's glory

  455. return to His temple?

  456. Will take that with us

  457. into Revelation 21.

  458. As we recognize it

  459. in the new creation,

  460. hope becomes promise.

  461. And here we find

  462. the people of God

  463. invited to an eternal home

  464. and an eternal homecoming.

  465. Look at verse 10.

  466. Here is the home

  467. for the people of God.

  468. What do we know about it?

  469. It's the holy city

  470. comes down out of heaven

  471. from God.

  472. It shines with the glory

  473. of God.

  474. God's glory

  475. has got these 12 gates

  476. reminding us

  477. that the way of access

  478. is open because of Jesus,

  479. because of the gospel.

  480. There's security.

  481. There's high walls.

  482. But there's also

  483. no fear of intruders,

  484. we're told later.

  485. There's nothing

  486. that's going to come

  487. and spoil.

  488. Nothing that's going

  489. to ruin this life

  490. that God has made

  491. with His people.

  492. And so there is

  493. this great homecoming

  494. here within our text.

  495. In verse 12,

  496. who lives here,

  497. whose names are written

  498. on the gates,

  499. that say this is their home.

  500. Twelve tribes of Israel.

  501. Verse 12,

  502. that tells us

  503. all the Old Testament

  504. believers about their faith

  505. in God,

  506. that He would send

  507. as Messiah Jesus.

  508. They're going to be there.

  509. Verse 14,

  510. the wall of the city

  511. had twelve foundations,

  512. and on them

  513. were the names

  514. of the twelve apostles

  515. of the Lamb.

  516. And so here's

  517. what this is saying.

  518. Everyone who believes

  519. in the message

  520. about Jesus,

  521. they're also going

  522. to find their home

  523. in here.

  524. So what started

  525. as a garden

  526. where Adam and Eve

  527. live with God

  528. now becomes

  529. this huge city

  530. where everybody

  531. who believes in Jesus

  532. across all time

  533. and countries

  534. and cultures

  535. gathers together,

  536. people from every nation

  537. and background

  538. united together

  539. in the presence

  540. of God

  541. in perfect love

  542. and joy.

  543. We have found

  544. our true forever home

  545. in these pages,

  546. and God

  547. is wonderfully present.

  548. So we talked

  549. a little bit

  550. about the dimensions

  551. of the Holy of Holies.

  552. Now pay attention

  553. to verse 16,

  554. and it explains

  555. why we get

  556. the numbers here.

  557. The city

  558. was laid out

  559. like a square,

  560. as long

  561. as it was wide.

  562. He measured

  563. the city

  564. with the rod

  565. and found it

  566. to be twelve thousand

  567. stadia in length

  568. and as wide

  569. and as high

  570. as it is

  571. long.

  572. Here's the symbolism.

  573. The new creation,

  574. like a massive cube.

  575. And the point of that

  576. is to say to us

  577. that the God of glory

  578. will fill

  579. the whole earth

  580. and God's people

  581. will live forever

  582. in the true

  583. Holy of Holies.

  584. We will never be

  585. a moment

  586. outside of the

  587. perfect presence

  588. of God.

  589. We will enjoy

  590. life with

  591. our God forever.

  592. We too

  593. will work

  594. and worship

  595. and rest

  596. and serve

  597. and love

  598. and enjoy

  599. and God

  600. will be there

  601. always.

  602. This isn't just

  603. for one person

  604. once per year.

  605. This is for

  606. everybody

  607. who puts

  608. their trust

  609. in Jesus

  610. for all

  611. of eternity.

  612. Now what's

  613. the significance

  614. of this theme?

  615. home,

  616. even just to say

  617. the word

  618. home,

  619. can have really

  620. powerful associations

  621. for us,

  622. can't it?

  623. For some

  624. it connects us

  625. with places.

  626. Often it connects us

  627. with the people

  628. that we love.

  629. At its best,

  630. home is associated

  631. with warm welcome,

  632. a place of true

  633. belonging,

  634. a place where we feel

  635. secure and we feel

  636. joy.

  637. It's the world

  638. we want.

  639. But in part,

  640. home and homecoming

  641. is such a powerful image

  642. because we know

  643. this to be true

  644. that we live

  645. among the ruin.

  646. Most days of the week

  647. our church is open

  648. so that asylum seekers

  649. can come

  650. and they can learn English.

  651. What does home

  652. mean to them

  653. if you have to flee

  654. from persecution

  655. and war?

  656. But to take it

  657. closer to home

  658. for ourselves,

  659. many of us here

  660. today,

  661. I imagine,

  662. have lived at

  663. different points

  664. with a sense

  665. of homesickness.

  666. This isn't your

  667. home country.

  668. Even if it is

  669. your home country,

  670. sometimes you

  671. perhaps wish you

  672. were where your

  673. parents were

  674. or where your

  675. friends were.

  676. In a city like

  677. Edinburgh,

  678. it's really easy

  679. to be surrounded

  680. by people but yet

  681. to feel like a

  682. stranger.

  683. There is a real

  684. problem of loneliness

  685. in our own city.

  686. The idea of home

  687. can bring mixed

  688. emotions for us.

  689. It can be a castle

  690. for us.

  691. At times it can be

  692. a prison for us.

  693. Where do we find

  694. our true home?

  695. Where do we find

  696. that warm,

  697. loving welcome?

  698. Where do we find

  699. those arms that are

  700. open to welcome us

  701. into true belonging,

  702. to bring us into

  703. a place where love

  704. and joy will be

  705. unbroken?

  706. And the answer

  707. again is from

  708. Jesus.

  709. To think about

  710. the story of

  711. Jesus, he is the

  712. eternal son of God

  713. but he entered

  714. into history,

  715. leaving his true

  716. home of heaven

  717. to come down,

  718. to be born on

  719. this earth,

  720. to be God

  721. with us,

  722. to be the true

  723. temple actually.

  724. So he would say

  725. that so that now

  726. if we want to

  727. meet with God,

  728. we go to Jesus.

  729. If we want to

  730. encounter the glory

  731. of God,

  732. we need to go

  733. to Jesus.

  734. And Jesus gave

  735. that wonderful

  736. promise in

  737. John 14.

  738. Just before he

  739. was about to die,

  740. he says,

  741. I'm going to

  742. prepare a place

  743. for you.

  744. My father's house

  745. has many rooms

  746. and I'm going to

  747. go and I'm going

  748. to make a room

  749. ready and one

  750. day I'll come

  751. back and I'll

  752. take you to be

  753. with me,

  754. that you may be

  755. where I am.

  756. Jesus prepares

  757. an eternal home

  758. for his people

  759. by going to

  760. the cross to

  761. die in our

  762. place for our

  763. sin before

  764. rising again

  765. and going back

  766. to rule in

  767. heaven for us.

  768. Jesus went

  769. into exile

  770. for us,

  771. went into

  772. the far

  773. country,

  774. on the cross

  775. felt forsaken

  776. by his father.

  777. So if we turn

  778. from sin to

  779. trust in Jesus,

  780. we can be

  781. brought home

  782. to God

  783. so that we

  784. will live

  785. for all

  786. eternity

  787. in the true

  788. holy of holies

  789. and that

  790. involves

  791. a tearing.

  792. Mark's gospel

  793. does something

  794. really helpful

  795. for us.

  796. It tells us

  797. that when Jesus

  798. was dying on

  799. the cross

  800. and his body

  801. was torn

  802. as a loving

  803. sacrifice,

  804. over there

  805. in the temple

  806. the curtain

  807. was torn

  808. and the curtain

  809. was torn

  810. so that

  811. the glory

  812. of God

  813. would break

  814. out and begin

  815. to fill

  816. the earth

  817. so that now

  818. God comes

  819. to dwell

  820. in the hearts

  821. of men

  822. and women

  823. and boys

  824. and girls

  825. all around

  826. the world

  827. and the church

  828. continues

  829. to grow.

  830. The good news

  831. of Jesus

  832. spreads to

  833. the ends

  834. of the earth

  835. and that

  836. process of

  837. filling the earth

  838. with glory

  839. that will be

  840. completed

  841. at the new

  842. creation.

  843. That's the home

  844. that we were

  845. made for

  846. and Jesus

  847. invites us

  848. to come home

  849. to God

  850. to enjoy

  851. that glory

  852. and that love

  853. to have that

  854. home and that

  855. homecoming

  856. that will never

  857. end

  858. and as Christian

  859. pilgrims

  860. we're invited

  861. every day

  862. to remember

  863. that's our

  864. true home

  865. so that we

  866. would keep

  867. the faith

  868. that we would

  869. go through

  870. the struggles

  871. knowing

  872. that we

  873. will make

  874. it home

  875. because

  876. we are

  877. connected

  878. to Jesus.

  879. So we

  880. thought about

  881. the wedding

  882. we thought

  883. about the

  884. home

  885. now we

  886. need to

  887. think

  888. very briefly

  889. about the

  890. garden

  891. and we

  892. sort of

  893. talked

  894. about the

  895. garden

  896. but the

  897. imagery

  898. really picks

  899. up in

  900. Revelation

  901. 21

  902. 22

  903. rather

  904. but again

  905. to go back

  906. to creation

  907. Genesis 1

  908. and 2

  909. we have this

  910. paradise

  911. garden

  912. made by

  913. God

  914. and within

  915. the garden

  916. there are

  917. those rivers

  918. that flow

  919. to give life

  920. to irrigate

  921. the land

  922. and in

  923. the centre

  924. of the

  925. garden

  926. there was

  927. this tree

  928. known as

  929. the tree

  930. of life

  931. reminding us

  932. that God

  933. is a generous

  934. giver

  935. what he wants

  936. to give

  937. is life

  938. but there

  939. was another

  940. tree in

  941. the centre

  942. of the

  943. garden

  944. and it

  945. was called

  946. the tree

  947. of the

  948. knowledge

  949. of good

  950. and evil

  951. Adam

  952. and Eve

  953. were told

  954. you have

  955. this whole

  956. garden

  957. and I'm

  958. saying yes

  959. to you

  960. enjoying

  961. this whole

  962. garden

  963. there's

  964. one tree

  965. that I

  966. want you

  967. to say

  968. no to

  969. it's the

  970. tree

  971. of the

  972. knowledge

  973. of good

  974. and evil

  975. it was

  976. forbidden

  977. that was

  978. their test

  979. of obedience

  980. but they

  981. failed that

  982. test

  983. and when

  984. they failed

  985. the test

  986. again they

  987. were expelled

  988. from the

  989. garden

  990. and they

  991. lost access

  992. to that

  993. tree

  994. and the

  995. entrance to

  996. the garden

  997. was now

  998. guarded by

  999. an angel

  1000. with a

  1001. fiery sword

  1002. but there's

  1003. still that

  1004. longing

  1005. for life

  1006. and for

  1007. satisfaction

  1008. the prophets

  1009. again would

  1010. pick up

  1011. these themes

  1012. Jeremiah

  1013. is one

  1014. very early

  1015. on in his

  1016. prophecy

  1017. he said

  1018. this to

  1019. them in

  1020. chapter 2

  1021. my people

  1022. this is God

  1023. speaking

  1024. have committed

  1025. two sins

  1026. they have

  1027. forsaken

  1028. me

  1029. and listen

  1030. to how he

  1031. pictures himself

  1032. the spring

  1033. of living

  1034. water

  1035. and have

  1036. dug their

  1037. own cisterns

  1038. broken

  1039. cisterns

  1040. what's his

  1041. point

  1042. God is saying

  1043. I'm offering

  1044. to give

  1045. myself

  1046. to my

  1047. people

  1048. and that's

  1049. everything

  1050. that's true

  1051. and lasting

  1052. satisfaction

  1053. but his

  1054. people in

  1055. the Old

  1056. Testament

  1057. were searching

  1058. for life

  1059. and satisfaction

  1060. meaning in

  1061. all the wrong

  1062. places

  1063. and they were

  1064. coming up

  1065. empty

  1066. another prophet

  1067. Ezekiel

  1068. in chapter 47

  1069. has this glorious

  1070. image

  1071. he sees a

  1072. renewed temple

  1073. and underneath

  1074. the temple

  1075. there's a stream

  1076. that starts to

  1077. flow

  1078. and as the stream

  1079. continues to flow

  1080. it gets wider

  1081. and it gets deeper

  1082. till it becomes

  1083. this roaring river

  1084. and whenever the river

  1085. goes

  1086. life

  1087. goes

  1088. and this is the

  1089. picture of

  1090. this is what God

  1091. does

  1092. this is what God

  1093. gives

  1094. he is the one

  1095. who gives life

  1096. true life

  1097. now pick up

  1098. your Bible

  1099. and look at

  1100. Revelation 22

    Revelation 22:1

  1101. verse 1

  1102. the angel

  1103. showed me

  1104. the river

  1105. of the water

  1106. of life

  1107. as clear

  1108. as crystal

  1109. flowing from

  1110. the throne

  1111. of God

  1112. and of the

  1113. Lamb

  1114. it is the

  1115. symbol

  1116. of life

  1117. giving

  1118. refreshing

  1119. water

  1120. that comes

  1121. from God

  1122. God

  1123. is a fountain

  1124. God

  1125. is never

  1126. thirsty

  1127. he has

  1128. perfect

  1129. satisfaction

  1130. in himself

  1131. but he

  1132. overflows

  1133. his goodness

  1134. his beauty

  1135. his truth

  1136. his love

  1137. to us

  1138. in our thirst

  1139. look at verse 2

  1140. and 3

  1141. down the middle

  1142. of the great street

  1143. okay

  1144. on each side

  1145. of the river

  1146. stood the tree

  1147. of life

  1148. bearing 12

  1149. crops of fruit

  1150. yielding its fruit

  1151. every month

  1152. and the leaves

  1153. of the tree

  1154. are for the healing

  1155. of the nations

  1156. no longer

  1157. will there be

  1158. any curse

  1159. here's a return

  1160. of the tree

  1161. of life

  1162. here is a symbol

  1163. of God's generosity

  1164. and God's provision

  1165. I will give you

  1166. perfect life

1167. and I will give it

  1168. to you in relationship

  1169. with me

  1170. and there is a

  1171. constant supply

  1172. of this perfect life

  1173. that is healing

1174. and not just for some

  1175. but for all peoples

  1176. from all nations

  1177. because the invitation

  1178. runs wide

  1179. and the high point

1180. of life in this garden

  1181. is that once again

  1182. God is here

  1183. the throne of God

  1184. and of the Lamb

1185. will be in the city

  1186. so it's a garden city

  1187. and his servants

  1188. will serve him

  1189. they will see

  1190. his face

  1191. and his name

1192. will be on their foreheads

1193. this is the happily ever after

  1194. this is God

  1195. and his people

  1196. in the garden

  1197. become a city

  1198. together forever

  1199. seeing the face

  1200. of Jesus

  1201. basking in the glory

  1202. of God

  1203. belonging to him

  1204. forever

  1205. there's no more darkness

  1206. there's no more night

  1207. there's no more danger

  1208. there's no need

  1209. for the sun

1210. because we get to live

  1211. and join the light

  1212. of God's glory

  1213. and we serve him

  1214. and we reign

  1215. with him forever

  1216. this is the life

  1217. that we were

  1218. made for

  1219. and the significance

  1220. of this

  1221. I think comes

  1222. when we acknowledge

  1223. that all of us

  1224. in different ways

  1225. we have a thirst

  1226. a thirst

  1227. sometimes for meaning

  1228. and purpose

  1229. a thirst

  1230. for work

  1231. or for life

  1232. that satisfies

  1233. a longing

  1234. to find

  1235. our ultimate

  1236. hopes

  1237. met

  1238. so our hearts

  1239. can be at peace

  1240. but often

  1241. don't we discover

  1242. that our hearts

  1243. come up empty

  1244. that we often

  1245. find that our hearts

  1246. remain restless

  1247. speaking to a friend

  1248. this week

  1249. who'd gone on

  1250. what sounded like

  1251. it should have been

1252. the trip of a lifetime

  1253. to Japan

  1254. taking in

  1255. the wonders

  1256. of Disneyland

  1257. Tokyo

  1258. some people

  1259. that'd be the best

  1260. thing ever

  1261. and she came away

  1262. thinking is that it

  1263. long cues

  1264. and silly

  1265. Mickey Mouse ears

  1266. that's often

  1267. our experience

  1268. in this life

  1269. we imagine

  1270. this is the thing

  1271. this is the one

  1272. my heart's gonna

  1273. find my everything

  1274. here

1275. and if that's not God

  1276. we're gonna come up

  1277. empty

  1278. God is a generous

  1279. giver

  1280. and the greatest

  1281. gift he gives

  1282. is himself

  1283. that's what the book

  1284. of Revelation

  1285. tells us

  1286. and that takes us

  1287. again to Jesus

  1288. the saviour

  1289. who will speak

  1290. in the gospels

  1291. to a woman

  1292. in John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  1293. beside a well

  1294. she is thirsty

  1295. she is longing

  1296. to find security

  1297. to find relationship

  1298. to find love

1299. and Jesus says to her

  1300. I can give you

  1301. living water

  1302. that will spring up

  1303. to eternal life

  1304. Jesus makes

  1305. the bold

  1306. amazing statement

  1307. that he is God

1308. and he gives the life

  1309. that satisfies

  1310. now how does he

  1311. do that

1312. how does he give us

  1313. the access

1314. to the tree of life

  1315. well the Bible

1316. tells us of another tree

  1317. the cross of Calvary

  1318. and there as we

  1319. as we pan

  1320. to that mountain

  1321. to that tree

  1322. we see Jesus

  1323. as it were

  1324. going under

  1325. the fiery sword

  1326. of God's judgment

  1327. not for anything

1328. that he had done wrong

  1329. but as he bears

1330. the sin of his people

1331. as he takes our day

1332. as he is cut off

1333. so that you and I

  1334. could be forgiven

  1335. and brought near

  1336. and enter life

  1337. with God

  1338. we hear Jesus

  1339. cry on the cross

  1340. I am thirsty

  1341. as he becomes

  1342. the sacrifice

1343. so that you and I

  1344. can taste and see

  1345. that the Lord

  1346. is good

  1347. that we can enjoy

  1348. the goodness of God

  1349. in this life

  1350. with a certain hope

  1351. of eternal joy

1352. in the life to come

  1353. so here is

1354. the world we all want

  1355. truly the life

1356. that we were made for

  1357. to be brought into

  1358. this wonderful story

  1359. of God's commitment

1360. to be with his people

  1361. to let his glory

  1362. overflow to us

  1363. to invite us

  1364. into perfect life

  1365. with him

  1366. and this story

  1367. creates a thirst

  1368. in us

1369. and I hope it says

  1370. to all of us

1371. I want to go deeper

1372. not to be too easily

  1373. satisfied

  1374. I want to find

  1375. true love

  1376. in knowing God

  1377. I want to find

  1378. my true home

  1379. in him

  1380. and to find

  1381. that joyful life

  1382. that will never end

  1383. and wonderfully

  1384. we're also reminded

  1385. who's the great hero

  1386. of this story

  1387. it's the Lord Jesus

  1388. for us to have

  1389. our happily ever after

  1390. Jesus has come

  1391. to defeat

  1392. our great enemies

  1393. he has come

  1394. to rescue

  1395. and win a bride

  1396. for himself

  1397. he is the one

  1398. who will return

  1399. one day

  1400. to take his people

  1401. to his glorious home

  1402. forever

  1403. this is the world

  1404. we all want

  1405. come to him

  1406. trust him

  1407. and live
