  1. I'm going to read from God's word for us now.

  2. We are in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  3. Matthew chapter 7, verses 1 to 6.

    Matthew 7:1–6

  4. Why do you see the speck that's in your brother's eye,

  5. but do not notice the log that's in your own eye?

  6. Or how can you say to your brother,

  7. let me take the speck out of your eye when there's a log in your own eye?

  8. You hypocrite.

  9. First, take the log out of your own eye,

  10. and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

  11. Do not give dogs what is holy,

  12. and do not throw your pearls before pigs,

  13. lest they trample them underfoot and attack you.

  14. Amen.

  15. This is the word of the Lord.

  16. Good evening.

  17. If you have a Bible with you,

  18. please do keep it open at Matthew 7, verses 1 to 6,

    Matthew 7:1–6

  19. which Chris just read for us.

  20. Cultures, even generations,

  21. culture after culture within the same place,

  22. have very different values on judging other people.

  23. Way back, a long, long time ago,

  24. when I was a teenager, back in the 1990s,

  25. UK culture, and it was the same in US culture as well,

  26. was all about not judging other people.

  27. Don't be judgmental was the message of that age.

  28. And that had all of its own values behind it.

  29. The idea was nobody has the moral high ground over anyone else.

  30. We're all trying to live life on our own terms,

  31. so you just don't have the right to judge someone else.

  32. But really, the thing that made that so normal

  33. was the world's most popular TV show at the time,

  34. which was called Friends.

  35. Some of you are just old enough to remember it,

  36. so I commiserate with you.

  37. Some of you are too old or too young,

  38. and you should count yourself blessed.

  39. But when I was a teenager, this is what everyone watched.

  40. It was about six young adults living in New York,

  41. living life without any bigger moral framework,

  42. all trying to make their own way in life.

  43. And the big idea in that show with what it meant to be a friend

  44. was that you were never judgmental of your friends.

  45. You were always affirming, always supportive.

  46. A friend would never say to one of their friends

  47. that there's a connection between their actions

  48. and the consequences of those actions.

  49. That's not what friends were supposed to do.

  50. So the worst thing that you could be was judgmental.

  51. Nowadays, though, that has all flipped around.

  52. And now we live in a culture in the West at large,

  53. here in Edinburgh, that is pro-judgmental,

  54. that's highly judgmental.

  55. There's something wrong with you nowadays

  56. if you don't judge people,

  57. if you see evil in the world,

  58. if you see evil in someone else's life,

  59. when you don't call it out,

  60. what do we say to that?

  61. We say, silence is violence, right?

  62. Who's the icon of our age?

  63. It's not Joey and Chandler

  64. not pointing out the consequences of their actions.

  65. It's Greta Thunberg who's become a global celebrity

  66. by going around saying,

  67. how dare you?

  68. Shame on you to everyone,

  69. making us all feel really bad about ourselves.

  70. And ours is the age that has given rise

  71. to what gets called cancel culture,

  72. which is a really deep rejection

  73. of the kind of culture that I grew up in

  74. in the 1990s,

  75. which was only a firm culture.

  76. So the question is,

  77. if we think about these two cultures,

  78. 1990s culture, 2025 culture,

  79. which one gets judgment right?

  80. Because they can't both be true.

  81. Let me say something

  82. that's going to end in a prediction.

  83. I don't claim to be a prophet

  84. and we don't really do that

  85. in a reformed church like this,

  86. but a humble prediction.

  87. The reason that the culture we have now,

  88. at this moment,

  89. which is so into being judgmental,

  90. the reason for that is that

  91. what came before that age of,

  92. don't judge me,

  93. don't make me face consequences

  94. for my actions,

  95. that way of living

  96. just doesn't really work in real life

  97. because actions do have consequences.

  98. And even back in the 1990s,

  99. nobody really believed

  100. that we should never judge

  101. another human being for anything ever.

  102. Imagine you walk into your home

  103. and you find someone burgling it

  104. and you say,

  105. stop, burglar, that's wrong.

  106. And the guy turns around

  107. and says to you,

  108. don't judge me.

  109. Did anyone ever say,

  110. well, it is 1995,

  111. so I suppose you're right.

  112. People just didn't do that.

  113. But what that culture back then

  114. tried to hold on to,

  115. we could put it in Christian terms,

  116. was something like this.

  117. show me grace,

  118. but don't you dare tell me

  119. I'm a sinner.

  120. So, it was something like

  121. grace without righteousness

  122. and that doesn't work.

  123. So, what our culture has done

  124. is just to swap all of that around.

  125. It inverted it.

  126. And now we have the opposite.

  127. I will condemn you

  128. for being a sinner,

  129. but there's no grace for you.

  130. There's no redemption.

  131. There's only shame.

  132. And there's your cancellation.

  133. And that doesn't work

  134. in real life either.

  135. That is a crushing way to live

  136. because nobody is perfect.

  137. And if the judgment turns on us,

  138. there isn't a prospect of redemption.

  139. So, then life becomes a game.

  140. And the way that you play the game

  141. is you keep the arrow of judgment

  142. pointed away from yourself

  143. as much as you can.

  144. Always point it at someone else

  145. because the moment it turns on you,

  146. the game is up.

  147. And you don't want anyone

  148. to go looking for the skeletons

  149. in your closet

  150. and that motivates you

  151. to look for them

  152. in everyone else's.

  153. Okay?

  154. It's all a big game of distraction

  155. away from ourselves.

  156. And that's not satisfying either.

  157. It's a really ugly way to live.

  158. So, here's the prediction.

  159. What will come next?

  160. Well, eventually,

  161. the culture we have now

  162. will give up

  163. on this way of being judgmental.

  164. And what will come next?

  165. Well, I think what we see now

  166. is that it's changing already.

  167. Our culture is really tribal

  168. in lots of ways.

  169. Identity, political groups,

  170. all that kind of stuff.

  171. And what people increasingly expect

  172. is righteousness without grace

  173. for whoever the opposite tribe

  174. to mine is

  175. and grace without righteousness

  176. for me and my tribe.

  177. Okay?

  178. We want acceptance for ourselves

  179. and condemnation for the other.

  180. But those things are really separate.

  181. But that doesn't work either.

  182. Eventually, people will move on from that

  183. because it's just another way

  184. to shuffle around

  185. the same set of options

  186. that don't work.

  187. Now, what I want us to see tonight

  188. when we're looking at these verses

  189. in Matthew 7

  190. is that Christianity

  191. offers us a way

  192. to think about judgment

  193. that you will not find

  194. in the same holistic form,

  195. the same true-to-life form,

  196. the same true-to-God form.

  197. You won't find that

  198. in the culture around us.

  199. However, the culture

  200. tries to shift itself

  201. unless our culture

  202. were to be really deeply,

  203. profoundly impacted

  204. by the gospel.

  205. So we're looking at verses 1 to 6.

  206. And these are a really puzzling few verses,

  207. a really puzzling unit

  208. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  209. So the Sermon on the Mount

  210. is this big, long sermon

  211. that Jesus preaches.

  212. And this is a very strange part within it.

  213. At least it seems like that

  214. when we read it first.

  215. Because it begins with Jesus saying,

  216. don't judge other people,

  217. verse 1.

  218. But then in verse 6,

  219. Jesus himself calls some people

  220. pigs and dogs.

  221. And which sounds like

  222. he's judging them.

  223. And in the middle of that,

  224. there's this really puzzling story,

  225. this parable,

  226. about someone who has

  227. a whole log of wood

  228. stuck in his eye

  229. and who can't see

  230. that log of wood there.

  231. And he's trying to take

  232. a tiny splinter

  233. out of someone else's eye.

  234. So there's a lot going on

  235. in these six verses.

  236. And the big challenge

  237. in reading them

  238. is trying to work out

  239. what verses 1 to 5,

  240. don't judge people,

  241. don't be a hypocrite,

  242. you know,

  243. with a plank of wood

  244. in your eye,

  245. what that has to do

  246. with verse 6.

  247. Don't cast your,

  248. don't give what's holy

  249. to the dogs,

  250. don't cast your pearls

  251. to pigs.

  252. And it's such a strange

  253. combination

  254. that some scholars

  255. on the Bible,

  256. even some really good ones,

  257. have thought

  258. that they just,

  259. that they can't be connected.

  260. This can't really be

  261. one whole idea

  262. that Jesus has.

  263. So even,

  264. so John Calvin,

  265. really great commentator

  266. on the Bible,

  267. thought that

  268. when Matthew was writing down

  269. Jesus' sermon,

  270. these were simply

  271. two different things

  272. that Jesus was talking about.

  273. And they follow one another

  274. in what he writes down,

  275. but they're not intended

  276. to be read

  277. as one whole unit.

  278. But one scholar

  279. who saw that they are connected,

  280. I think he was right,

  281. was John Stott,

  282. a great preacher,

  283. Bible commentator

  284. in London.

  285. And John Stott said that,

  286. I think he was right on this,

  287. that these verses,

  288. one to six,

  289. and actually even

  290. what comes next as well,

  291. are all one movement,

  292. one idea,

  293. because there's a thread

  294. that runs through all of them,

  295. and that is relationships.

  296. So verses one to five,

  297. if you are a Christian,

  298. are about your relationships

  299. to other Christians.

  300. Verse six, then,

  301. if you are a Christian,

  302. is about your relationships

  303. to some non-Christians.

  304. And what comes next

  305. from verse seven

  306. is your relationship

  307. to God.

  308. Okay, so Stott saw

  309. that these are all

  310. different ways

  311. that Jesus is addressing

  312. how the gospel shapes

  313. the relationships we have

  314. to all these different,

  315. these different people,

  316. and then to God.

  317. And when you read

  318. the verses like that,

  319. it makes a lot of sense,

  320. not just of these verses,

  321. but actually of what we see

  322. throughout the gospels

  323. at large,

  324. and throughout the New Testament

  325. at large.

  326. Because when Jesus says,

  327. don't judge,

  328. he's not saying,

  329. never use your critical faculties,

  330. you know,

  331. never form an opinion,

  332. never reach a verdict

  333. where you have to discern something.

  334. Imagine you take your car

  335. to the garage,

  336. you know,

  337. you're driving it,

  338. something doesn't seem right,

  339. and you think it needs looked at,

  340. so you take it to the garage,

  341. and you ask a mechanic,

  342. have a look at it,

  343. tell me,

  344. is this car safe to drive or not?

  345. And then the mechanic,

  346. you know,

  347. does what he does with the car,

  348. but then he tells you,

  349. I'm really sorry,

  350. but I'm actually a Christian,

  351. so I'm not allowed to make

  352. that kind of judgment call.

  353. That's not what Jesus is saying.

  354. The word for judge here

  355. comes up a lot in the gospels,

  356. comes up a lot in Matthew's gospel,

  357. and it's something that Jesus says,

  358. God the Father does,

  359. something Jesus says that he does,

  360. and the word means specifically

  361. someone who sits in judgment

  362. over someone else

  363. to discern the difference

  364. between good and evil,

  365. okay?

  366. And now this is a really important point.

  367. There are other places in the gospels

  368. where Jesus tells his followers

  369. that they should judge.

  370. In John 7, he says,

  371. do not judge by appearances,

  372. but judge with right judgment.

  373. In Luke 12, he asks a crowd of people,

  374. why do you not judge for yourselves

  375. what is right?

  376. So what we have here in Matthew 7

  377. is Jesus teaching on judgment done badly,

  378. okay?

  379. If it's possible,

  380. if Jesus says judge with right judgment,

  381. it's also possible to judge

  382. with wrong judgment,

  383. and that's what he's addressing here.

  384. Judgment done badly between Christians,

  385. people judging with wrong judgment,

  386. and then after that,

  387. Christians lacking good judgment

  388. in how they relate to some non-Christians.

  389. So there was a,

  390. I already quoted John Stock,

  391. pastor in London,

  392. there was another pastor in London

  393. called Charles Spurgeon,

  394. and he had a really excellent insight

  395. also on how these verses hold together.

  396. And he said that if you really take

  397. the Christian gospel to heart,

  398. it will shape you in two ways.

  399. It will make you a particular kind of person

  400. in two ways.

  401. On the one hand,

  402. it will stop you from being censorious.

  403. I'll explain what that means in a minute.

  404. And on the other hand,

  405. he said it will stop you

  406. from being a simpleton,

  407. okay?

  408. And we could update the language.

  409. It will stop you from being naive,

  410. okay?

  411. So it'll stop you from being censorious,

  412. and the gospel will stop you

  413. from being naive.

  414. So I'm just plagiarizing Spurgeon entirely

  415. because those are the two points

  416. of the sermon, okay?

  417. The two ways that the gospel

  418. shapes you in your relationships,

  419. as we think about judgment,

  420. stops you from being censorious,

  421. point one,

  422. and it stops you from being naive,

  423. point two.

  424. So don't be censorious.

  425. In our culture nowadays,

  426. a lot of people confuse the word

  427. censorious with censorship.

  428. So if you look up,

  429. if you Google censorious

  430. and look at the news,

  431. you'll find a lot of journalists saying,

  432. we live in a censorious culture

  433. when they're talking about,

  434. you know,

  435. books that get banned by libraries

  436. or something like that.

  437. But that's not what the word censorious

  438. means, okay?

  439. But in the way that I'm using it.

  440. So someone who is censorious

  441. is someone who is severely,

  442. harshly critical of other people.

  443. Okay?

  444. John stopped,

  445. defined it like this.

  446. Censoriousness is a compound sin.

  447. It's a sin made up of different parts.

  448. It's a compound sin composed

  449. of several unpleasant ingredients.

  450. It does not mean to assess people critically,

  451. but to judge them harshly.

  452. The censorious critic is a fault finder

  453. who is negative and destructive

  454. towards other people

  455. and enjoys actively seeking out their failings.

  456. He puts the worst possible spin

  457. on their motives,

  458. pours cold water on their schemes,

  459. and is ungenerous toward their mistakes.

  460. So the thing is,

  461. if you're a censorious person,

  462. it means that you appoint yourself

  463. the judge,

  464. the jury,

  465. and the executioner

  466. for other people.

  467. And deep down,

  468. you actually enjoy it.

  469. You like being the judge,

  470. and you take it upon yourself

  471. never to be the one who's judged.

  472. You think that you belong

  473. on the bench,

  474. but not in the dock.

  475. And here's where this is exactly,

  476. why this is a very pervasive thing

  477. in the culture that we live in,

  478. why this is an idol

  479. that's offered to us every day.

  480. Our culture in Edinburgh today

  481. believes in something like righteousness

  482. and judgment,

  483. but our culture doesn't really believe

  484. very strongly in forgiveness or grace.

  485. You know, we talk about karma

  486. a lot nowadays,

  487. but much less about grace.

  488. And that means that in our culture,

  489. to be judged by other people

  490. is terrifying,

  491. it's devastating,

  492. because our culture can offer,

  493. it can condemn us,

  494. but it doesn't really have ways

  495. to offer us a path back.

  496. It can't offer us redemption.

  497. And that means that we have an incentive

  498. to judge other people.

  499. And the more we do that,

  500. the more we think

  501. that we're protecting ourselves

  502. from the judgment

  503. ever turning on us.

  504. And so we tell ourselves

  505. that we are righteous,

  506. that whatever the big issue is,

  507. I am on the right side of history,

  508. and other people

  509. are the immoral ones,

  510. and I rage against them.

  511. But really,

  512. we just become censorious,

  513. which is a way of trying to hide

  514. underneath all of that,

  515. trying to hide from the judgment

  516. ever pointing around to us.

  517. So in real life,

  518. if this is you,

  519. maybe you are that person

  520. in the staff room

  521. who always likes to draw attention

  522. to other people's failings.

  523. You know, if you talk about a colleague,

  524. it begins with,

  525. you know, the problem with her is,

  526. the issue with him is,

  527. and maybe you enjoy the way

  528. that you think it makes you

  529. look better than them.

  530. In real life,

  531. maybe this means that

  532. you're the person who lurks

  533. on social media

  534. waiting for one of the people

  535. in the other tribe

  536. to say something

  537. that you can condemn them for,

  538. and those are the comments

  539. that you lead with.

  540. And you express your righteous anger,

  541. and you enjoy the,

  542. all the wee dopamine hits

  543. that come with everyone else

  544. in your tribe liking it.

  545. Or maybe you're the bully

  546. in your playground,

  547. and you love to point out

  548. how rubbish

  549. all the other kids are.

  550. In the Sermon on the Mount,

  551. if that's you,

  552. Jesus' counsel to you is,

  553. you need to live a different way.

  554. Don't be censorious.

  555. And he says that in a way

  556. that speaks very directly

  557. into our culture.

  558. The reason that Jesus gives

  559. for why you should not be

  560. a censorious person

  561. is that you can only pretend

  562. to be the judge for so long.

  563. You can't do it forever.

  564. Eventually,

  565. you must be the one

  566. who also gets judged.

  567. You can't put it off forever,

  568. and when that happens,

  569. you will be held

  570. to the same merciless standard,

  571. the same harshly critical standard,

  572. that you've been dishing out

  573. to everyone else.

  574. It's exactly the same logic

  575. as when Jesus said,

  576. if you live by the sword,

  577. you will die by the sword.

  578. If you live by censoriousness,

  579. you will die by censoriousness.

  580. If you choose,

  581. in a censorious culture,

  582. to be a censorious person,

  583. eventually,

  584. well, that's the only game in town.

  585. You will have to be

  586. on the receiving end of it.

  587. Eventually,

  588. some other judgmental person

  589. will shine a light

  590. into the dark corners of your life

  591. and show you no mercy.

  592. Okay?

  593. True story that many of you

  594. will have read

  595. in the newspapers

  596. a week or so ago

  597. here in Scotland.

  598. There was a politician

  599. who was doing moral grandstanding

  600. against second homeowners.

  601. Because we have

  602. a housing crisis,

  603. there are a lot of people

  604. who really struggle

  605. to find a place to live.

  606. This politician was railing

  607. against second homeowners

  608. and how immoral this is.

  609. And shame on you

  610. if you have a second home.

  611. Only for someone else

  612. to do some digging on her

  613. and it turned out

  614. she has a second home in Scotland,

  615. she has a third home in Spain

  616. where the housing crisis

  617. is much worse.

  618. If you live by censoriousness,

  619. you will die by censoriousness.

  620. But the gospel

  621. offers you

  622. a different way to live.

  623. It offers you the chance

  624. to be a different kind of person.

  625. If you've really taken it to heart,

  626. then the gospel tells you

  627. that before God

  628. you were morally bankrupt.

  629. You were spiritually empty.

  630. And you were guilty

  631. before God

  632. as a rebel.

  633. And you were his enemy

  634. but he showed you

  635. completely undeserved mercy

  636. and he made you,

  637. he put you in the category

  638. a friend.

  639. And he adopted you,

  640. not just a friend,

  641. he made you his child.

  642. And he welcomed you

  643. into that

  644. and it was all

  645. completely gratuitous.

  646. And it was lavish

  647. and you didn't deserve

  648. any of it.

  649. Not the tiniest speck.

  650. And there's something

  651. that just doesn't work

  652. if you say,

  653. I have received

  654. all of that from God,

  655. all that lavish forgiveness,

  656. all that mercy,

  657. and now when I turn around

  658. to my fellow human being,

  659. none of that flows through.

  660. And I will show

  661. other people no mercy.

  662. And I'm only hard-hearted.

  663. And I don't believe

  664. in forgiveness for them.

  665. And I actually really like

  666. dragging them down.

  667. I like seeing them

  668. not being redeemed.

  669. There's something

  670. that just doesn't,

  671. that doesn't work with that.

  672. Okay?

  673. And we see this,

  674. if you read through

  675. all of Matthew's gospel,

  676. when you get to chapter 18,

  677. Jesus tells a parable

  678. about this.

  679. About a king

  680. who had a servant

  681. who owed him

  682. a massive debt.

  683. You know,

  684. up in the millions of pounds.

  685. And he asked the king

  686. for mercy.

  687. And the king said,

  688. I free you of the debt.

  689. I'll show you mercy.

  690. I forgive you.

  691. And the servant

  692. was delighted.

  693. He goes off.

  694. And then there's someone else

  695. who owes that servant

  696. a tiny sum of money.

  697. You know,

  698. ten pounds,

  699. something like that.

  700. And he can't repay it.

  701. And he says to the servant,

  702. I can't repay this.

  703. I'm bankrupt.

  704. I ask you for mercy.

  705. And the servant

  706. grabs him by the neck

  707. and throttles him

  708. and says,

  709. no mercy for you.

  710. And he throws him in prison.

  711. He's happy to receive forgiveness,

  712. but he does not pass on forgiveness.

  713. He loves to get mercy,

  714. but he does not love to give mercy.

  715. And when the king

  716. in Jesus' parable

  717. hears about this,

  718. the king is furious

  719. with the servant

  720. because although he received forgiveness,

  721. he didn't show forgiveness.

  722. And the king then

  723. has him thrown in prison

  724. and has the other man released.

  725. See,

  726. that is why

  727. censoriousness

  728. and the gospel

  729. don't fit together.

  730. They're like oil and water.

  731. If anything,

  732. believing the gospel

  733. should make you less censorious

  734. and certainly not more.

  735. Now,

  736. if you're listening to this,

  737. maybe you're not a Christian,

  738. maybe you're skeptical.

  739. And in our kind of culture,

  740. then maybe you're listening to this

  741. and thinking,

  742. you know,

  743. in a silence

  744. is violence culture,

  745. where we do really believe

  746. in righteousness

  747. and there's a lot of evil

  748. in the world

  749. that needs to be called out

  750. and challenged.

  751. Maybe you're listening to this

  752. so far and thinking,

  753. okay,

  754. so the Christian message

  755. means

  756. that people who believe it

  757. become naive

  758. to the evil in the world

  759. and that's why,

  760. you know,

  761. they don't call it out

  762. like I want to.

  763. Or maybe

  764. does Christianity

  765. just dull your conscience

  766. and make you passive

  767. and you just learn

  768. to tolerate

  769. all the evil in the world?

  770. In which case,

  771. Christianity seems like a problem.

  772. But that's not what

  773. Jesus teaches here.

  774. Not at all.

  775. In fact,

  776. look at what comes next

  777. after he says

  778. don't be censorious.

  779. Look at verses 3 to 5

  780. and the story

  781. that Jesus tells.

  782. He asks you

  783. to imagine someone

  784. who sees a problem

  785. in someone else's life.

  786. So there's something

  787. to be corrected.

  788. There's an evil

  789. in someone's life,

  790. let's say.

  791. And there's a person

  792. then who's trying

  793. to correct that

  794. in someone else.

  795. And Jesus compares

  796. that problem

  797. to a tiny speck.

  798. It's a splinter

  799. in an eye.

  800. Okay?

  801. And if you have

  802. a splinter in your eye,

  803. you probably do want it removed.

  804. I mean,

  805. that's not a good thing.

  806. It's not there

  807. to be left in the eye.

  808. But here's the issue.

  809. The person who's trying

  810. to take the splinter out

  811. happens to have

  812. an entire log,

  813. a beam of wood.

  814. So not just a little bit of wood,

  815. but the word he uses

  816. is the word for,

  817. you know,

  818. a rafter that you would have

  819. from the roof of your house.

  820. This person who's trying

  821. to deal with the problem

  822. has that sticking out

  823. of his eye.

  824. I mean,

  825. it's meant to make you laugh.

  826. It's a ridiculous image,

  827. but this guy has that

  828. sticking out of his eye,

  829. and even more ridiculously,

  830. he doesn't even see it.

  831. He's completely blind

  832. to this fact.

  833. And the ridiculous picture

  834. is, you know,

  835. if you want to take

  836. a splinter out of someone's eye,

  837. you have to get quite close,

  838. and you need to be able

  839. to see it clearly.

  840. If you,

  841. I don't know,

  842. I've never had a beam

  843. stuck in my eye.

  844. I can't imagine it would be easy

  845. to get near someone else's head

  846. doing that,

  847. but that's what he's doing.

  848. He's trying to fix something

  849. in someone else's life,

  850. all the while assuming

  851. that his life

  852. also doesn't need

  853. to be fixed

  854. in very fundamental ways.

  855. And Jesus

  856. calls it out.

  857. There is no silence

  858. is violence here,

  859. but there's something

  860. much better.

  861. There is speech

  862. that is redemptive.

  863. Because Jesus here

  864. says that the guy

  865. with the beam in his eye

  866. is a hypocrite.

  867. He's looking at

  868. someone else's life,

  869. having forgotten

  870. first to look at his own.

  871. You know,

  872. there's an Old Testament

  873. story that teaches

  874. the same thing.

  875. And it's the story

  876. of King David

  877. where he abuses

  878. his power as a king

  879. to steal another man's wife.

  880. And then he abuses

  881. his power as king

  882. to have that man

  883. sent to the front line

  884. of a battle

  885. where he will certainly die.

  886. And he does.

  887. And he does all of this.

  888. He has multiple beams

  889. in his eye.

  890. And then the prophet Nathan

  891. comes to David

  892. and says,

  893. let me tell you a story.

  894. Once there was a rich man

  895. and there was a poor man.

  896. And the rich man

  897. had many sheep

  898. and the poor man

  899. only had one.

  900. And the rich man

  901. had to feed a guest.

  902. But he didn't take

  903. any of his own sheep.

  904. Even though he had so many,

  905. he took the poor man's

  906. only sheep

  907. and he slaughtered it

  908. and he fed it to the guest.

  909. And when David's hearing

  910. the story at this point,

  911. he becomes furious

  912. and says,

  913. that man deserves to die.

  914. And Nathan says to him,

  915. David,

  916. you are the man.

  917. Right?

  918. The beam in his eye

  919. that he could not see.

  920. You're,

  921. this story is about a,

  922. is about a speck.

  923. It's about a splinter.

  924. It's about a sheep.

  925. You are the one

  926. who stole

  927. another man's wife

  928. and who had that man murdered,

  929. who murdered that man

  930. by arrangement.

  931. And here you are feeling rage

  932. about someone

  933. who stole a sheep

  934. because he was a bit

  935. of a cheapskate.

  936. So there,

  937. David is like the guy

  938. who doesn't see

  939. that he has a plank

  940. in his eye

  941. when he's looking

  942. at someone with a speck

  943. in his eye.

  944. And Jesus' judgment there

  945. is,

  946. you hypocrite.

  947. But here's the thing

  948. where Jesus doesn't fit

  949. into our way

  950. of doing this

  951. in our culture.

  952. Jesus' judgment

  953. is redemptive.

  954. It's not,

  955. you hypocrite,

  956. cancelled.

  957. Jesus says,

  958. first,

  959. take the plank

  960. out of your own eye.

  961. Then you can actually

  962. help get the speck

  963. out of your brother's eye.

  964. It's not that Christianity

  965. doesn't,

  966. it's not that Christianity

  967. makes you naive

  968. to the problems

  969. in the world

  970. or in other people's lives.

  971. And it's not that Christianity

  972. means you just tolerate it

  973. and that you do nothing.

  974. Instead,

  975. it changes

  976. how you respond

  977. to these problems.

  978. It means that now

  979. you respond to them

  980. with humility.

  981. A kind of humility

  982. that only the gospel

  983. can form in you.

  984. It means you respond

  985. with gentleness

  986. that only the gospel

  987. can form in you.

  988. It's not randomly

  989. that Jesus chooses

  990. for his story

  991. an eye,

  992. something that is

  993. so sensitive

  994. and that would feel

  995. even a tiny splinter

  996. and be irritated by it.

  997. You can only take it out

  998. with tremendous care

  999. and gentleness.

  1000. And the gospel

  1001. shapes you like that.

  1002. It gives you

  1003. a new way

  1004. of judging others

  1005. that is grounded

  1006. in humility

  1007. because the gospel

  1008. says you sit

  1009. under the same judgment.

  1010. And that's

  1011. the real difference

  1012. between the gospel

  1013. and censoriousness.

  1014. If you're censorious,

  1015. you judge others

  1016. as though you don't

  1017. need redemption

  1018. yourself

  1019. and as though

  1020. there is no redemption

1021. for the people you judge.

  1022. But if you believe

  1023. the gospel,

  1024. it's different.

  1025. If you judge

  1026. someone else,

  1027. you also recognize

  1028. that you stand

  1029. under the same judgment

  1030. and that you both

  1031. need the same redemption.

  1032. You know,

  1033. it's like the difference

  1034. between,

  1035. if you imagine

  1036. someone who just

  1037. lambasts someone

  1038. who struggles

  1039. with alcohol addiction

  1040. and writes

  1041. that person off,

  1042. the difference

  1043. between that kind

  1044. of person

  1045. and someone

  1046. who comes alongside

  1047. that person

  1048. and says,

1049. I have the same struggle,

  1050. let's get you help.

  1051. Right?

  1052. Those are two

  1053. completely different things.

  1054. So,

  1055. that's the first thing.

  1056. The gospel shapes you

  1057. and says,

  1058. don't be censorious.

  1059. And the second is

1060. that the gospel shapes you

  1061. and says,

  1062. don't be naive.

  1063. See,

  1064. the other effect

  1065. of the gospel

  1066. is that it changes

  1067. the kind of judgment

  1068. or discernment

  1069. you have

  1070. about people

  1071. who don't yet

  1072. believe the gospel.

  1073. So,

  1074. here,

  1075. in verse 6,

  1076. Jesus pivots

  1077. from talking about

  1078. people who do

  1079. share the faith

  1080. with you,

  1081. don't judge your brother,

  1082. to people who don't.

  1083. So,

  1084. now,

  1085. just like with

  1086. don't judge,

1087. we have to read Jesus

1088. here in the whole context

  1089. of the gospels.

  1090. So,

1091. what you see in the gospels

  1092. more broadly

  1093. is that Jesus

  1094. talks about

  1095. the kingdom of heaven

  1096. as a pearl,

1097. as a pearl of great price.

  1098. So,

  1099. there's another parable

  1100. also in Matthew

  1101. where he talks about

  1102. a merchant

  1103. who travels

  1104. the whole world

  1105. looking for

  1106. valuable pearls.

  1107. And

  1108. he finds

  1109. what he knows

  1110. instantly

  1111. is

  1112. the greatest

  1113. pearl that there

  1114. ever could be.

  1115. The pearl

  1116. of great price.

  1117. And he knew

  1118. how valuable it was

  1119. and he knew

  1120. it was actually

  1121. more valuable

  1122. than everything

  1123. else in his life.

  1124. So much so

  1125. that it would be

  1126. worth giving up

  1127. everything

  1128. to get this pearl.

  1129. So,

  1130. he sells

  1131. everything

  1132. to get the pearl

  1133. of great price.

  1134. So,

  1135. elsewhere in the gospels,

  1136. Jesus speaks about

  1137. how there are some

  1138. people in this world

  1139. who are looking

  1140. for goodness

  1141. and truth

  1142. and beauty

  1143. and they encounter

  1144. the gospel

  1145. and then somehow

  1146. it strikes them

  1147. down to the ground.

  1148. It strikes them

  1149. so powerfully

  1150. that they will

  1151. reorder their

  1152. entire lives.

  1153. They'll give up

  1154. anything to get this,

  1155. to get this Jesus.

  1156. It's what they've

  1157. always been looking for.

1158. But here in Matthew 7

  1159. when he says

  1160. don't give what is

  1161. holy to the dogs,

  1162. don't cast your pearls

  1163. to pigs,

  1164. he's talking about

  1165. people who encounter

  1166. the gospel,

  1167. who are not looking

  1168. for truth.

  1169. They're more like

  1170. a stray dog

  1171. that scavenges

  1172. in the rubbish.

  1173. So,

  1174. Jesus says

  1175. don't throw

  1176. what is holy

  1177. and there he's

  1178. drawing on the idea

  1179. of holy bread

  1180. in the temple.

  1181. Don't throw

  1182. that holy food

  1183. to dogs

  1184. who will just

  1185. treat it

  1186. as though

  1187. it's any old

  1188. rubbish

  1189. in the scrap pile

  1190. and don't throw

  1191. your pearls

  1192. to pigs

  1193. who get all

  1194. the waste food

  1195. that the farmer

  1196. doesn't want

  1197. because that pig

  1198. will know

  1199. that the pearl

  1200. isn't that waste food

  1201. and the pig

  1202. will just trample

  1203. the pearl.

  1204. Now,

  1205. that maybe sounds

  1206. like a really

  1207. strange thing

  1208. for Jesus to say

  1209. after everything

  1210. that he said

  1211. in verses 3 to 5

  1212. about planks

  1213. and specks.

  1214. But here's why

  1215. I think Jesus

  1216. says this

  1217. in verse 6.

  1218. In verses 1 to 5,

  1219. he tells us

  1220. that we have

  1221. to go

  1222. into a

  1223. censorious world

  1224. as non-censorious

  1225. people

  1226. and we have

  1227. to do that

  1228. with a way

  1229. of living

  1230. in this world

  1231. that will be

  1232. deeply

  1233. counterintuitive

  1234. to the people

  1235. around us.

  1236. Some people,

  1237. when they

  1238. hear our gospel,

  1239. when they see

  1240. what it looks like

  1241. and how we live,

  1242. will think

  1243. they'll be like

  1244. the merchant

  1245. who finds

  1246. the pearl

  1247. of great price

  1248. and they'll see

  1249. our way of life

  1250. and the reason

  1251. for that

  1252. in the message

  1253. of the gospel

  1254. and be attracted

  1255. to it

  1256. and they will

  1257. join us.

  1258. But not everyone

  1259. will be like that.

  1260. Some people

  1261. will hear our message

  1262. and they'll hate it.

  1263. It's not

  1264. what they're

  1265. looking for.

  1266. So,

  1267. some people

  1268. will respond

  1269. like that.

  1270. Now,

  1271. to be sure

  1272. what Jesus

  1273. does not

  1274. mean here

  1275. is that we only

  1276. share the gospel

  1277. with people

  1278. who will

  1279. respond well,

  1280. like the merchant

  1281. looking for the pearl

  1282. of great price.

  1283. We can't do that

  1284. in any sense

  1285. because until you

  1286. share the gospel

  1287. with someone,

  1288. you don't know

  1289. how they'll respond.

  1290. So,

  1291. that's why

  1292. Matthew's gospel

  1293. ends with the

  1294. great commission.

  1295. Bring the gospel

  1296. to everyone.

  1297. And you just

  1298. don't know

  1299. when you do that

  1300. whether someone

  1301. will say,

  1302. finally,

  1303. this is the pearl

  1304. of great price

  1305. or,

  1306. why have you

  1307. given me

  1308. this round,

  1309. hard,

  1310. white ball?

  1311. I wanted

  1312. a rotten turnip

  1313. and I would

  1314. have just been

  1315. happy with that.

  1316. I don't want

  1317. what you offer.

  1318. You see,

  1319. you just don't

  1320. know in advance

  1321. and that's why

  1322. Jesus,

  1323. at the very end

  1324. of this gospel

  1325. tells his followers

  1326. that you must

  1327. share the gospel

  1328. with everyone.

  1329. But if you want

  1330. to understand

  1331. what Jesus means

  1332. here in Matthew 7

  1333. about not casting

  1334. your pearls

  1335. before swine,

  1336. you actually need

  1337. to think of

  1338. what happens

  1339. in a few chapters

  1340. time in Matthew 10

  1341. because that's

  1342. the chapter

  1343. where Jesus

  1344. takes his disciples

  1345. and he tells them

  1346. you are now

  1347. my apostles

  1348. and he sends

  1349. them out

  1350. to preach

  1351. to everyone

  1352. that they come

  1353. across

  1354. in the towns

  1355. and villages

  1356. around them

  1357. and he sends

  1358. them out

  1359. to give people

  1360. a deep,

  1361. remarkable,

  1362. life-changing

  1363. window

  1364. into the

  1365. kingdom of heaven.

  1366. So he tells them

  1367. as he sends them

  1368. out,

  1369. you are now

  1370. my apostles

  1371. and he sends

  1372. them out

  1373. to give people

  1374. this deep

  1375. exposure

  1376. to the

  1377. transformation

  1378. the gospel

  1379. will bring

  1380. to the world.

  1381. So he sends

  1382. them out

  1383. to heal

  1384. the sick,

  1385. to raise

  1386. the dead,

  1387. to cleanse

  1388. lepers,

  1389. to cast

  1390. out their

  1391. demons

  1392. and he sends

  1393. them out

  1394. saying,

  1395. and you won't

  1396. make a penny

  1397. from this,

  1398. you will not

  1399. ask anyone

  1400. for anything,

  1401. you will not

  1402. exploit anyone

  1403. financially,

  1404. you will not

  1405. make money,

  1406. in fact you

  1407. will give

  1408. lavishly

  1409. and you will

  1410. make their

  1411. lives better

  1412. and even

  1413. when you've

  1414. done all that

  1415. some people

  1416. will still

  1417. reject you

  1418. and everything

  1419. you've done

  1420. for them

  1421. and the message

  1422. at its heart

  1423. they will just

  1424. say is garbage

  1425. and when that

  1426. happens,

  1427. Jesus tells them

  1428. in Matthew 10,

  1429. after you've done

  1430. all that for them

  1431. then you shake

  1432. the dust off

  1433. your feet

  1434. and then you

  1435. bring the message

  1436. of the kingdom

  1437. of heaven

  1438. to other people

  1439. and that's

  1440. actually the

  1441. context where

  1442. when Jesus

  1443. is sending

  1444. them out

  1445. he tells

  1446. them I am

  1447. sending you

  1448. out as sheep

  1449. among wolves

  1450. so be as wise

  1451. as serpents

  1452. and as innocent

  1453. as doves

  1454. so you see

  1455. taking us back

  1456. to Matthew 7

  1457. if the gospel

  1458. has made you

  1459. or is making

  1460. you a non-censorious

  1461. person

  1462. in hyper-censorious

  1463. Edinburgh

  1464. 2025

  1465. that means

  1466. that the gospel

  1467. is making you

  1468. the kind of person

  1469. who is

  1470. discerning enough

  1471. to see the speck

  1472. in someone's

  1473. eye

  1474. but it also

  1475. makes you

  1476. someone who

  1477. is gentle

  1478. enough

  1479. trustworthy

  1480. enough

  1481. non-pompous

  1482. enough

  1483. humble enough

  1484. honest enough

  1485. about the plank

  1486. in your own eye

  1487. that maybe

  1488. they'll trust you

  1489. to get close

  1490. enough to their

  1491. eye to help

  1492. them take the

  1493. speck out

  1494. but

  1495. if you're

  1496. doing that

  1497. you're doing

  1498. it as

  1499. sheep

  1500. among wolves

  1501. because the

  1502. gospel in a

  1503. censorious

  1504. culture

  1505. will divide

  1506. people

  1507. some people

  1508. will hear it

  1509. and think

  1510. finally this

  1511. is my

  1512. liberation

  1513. from

  1514. censoriousness

  1515. from this

  1516. world's

  1517. harsh

  1518. judgmentalism

  1519. but other

  1520. people will

  1521. hear the gospel

  1522. and see it

  1523. lived out

  1524. and think

  1525. I'm going

  1526. to be

  1527. you know

  1528. what

  1529. I'm going

  1530. to be

  1531. more

  1532. censorious

  1533. than ever

  1534. shame on

  1535. you

  1536. for bringing

  1537. this message

  1538. to me

  1539. and

  1540. that's why

  1541. if you want

  1542. to live

  1543. like this

  1544. you need

  1545. to be

  1546. as wise

  1547. as a serpent

  1548. and you need

  1549. to be

  1550. as innocent

  1551. as a dove

  1552. and that

  1553. is why

  1554. Jesus

  1555. follows

  1556. judge

  1557. not

  1558. do not

  1559. judge

  1560. with do

  1561. not cast

  1562. your pearls

  1563. before swine

  1564. amen

  1565. let me pray

  1566. our father

  1567. in heaven

  1568. we thank you

  1569. for your son

  1570. Jesus Christ

  1571. we thank you

  1572. for the

  1573. fathomless

  1574. wisdom

  1575. in his

  1576. teaching

  1577. we thank you

  1578. for his

  1579. perfect

  1580. judgment

  1581. of the

  1582. human

  1583. heart

  1584. of

  1585. the

  1586. goodness

  1587. and the

  1588. evil

  1589. in this

  1590. world

  1591. the goodness

  1592. that you

  1593. have made

  1594. the evil

  1595. that must

  1596. be redeemed

  1597. and we thank

  1598. you that

  1599. Jesus

  1600. has come

  1601. into our

  1602. world

  1603. the true

  1604. judge

  1605. who made

  1606. himself

  1607. the one

  1608. who was

  1609. judged

  1610. we thank

  1611. you that

  1612. when his

  1613. gospel

  1614. when his

  1615. perfect

  1616. person

  1617. when his

  1618. lavish love

  1619. confronts us

  1620. that it

  1621. shows us

  1622. ourselves

  1623. in a new

  1624. light

  1625. and that it

  1626. helps us

  1627. see the

  1628. the beam

  1629. in our

  1630. own eye

  1631. but also

  1632. that Jesus

  1633. is the one

  1634. who comes

  1635. to open

  1636. our eyes

  1637. to help us

  1638. see the truth

  1639. about himself

  1640. about yourself

  1641. about ourselves

  1642. we thank you

  1643. for his

  1644. great redeeming

  1645. love

  1646. for the way

  1647. that he

  1648. is patient

  1649. with us

  1650. that he

  1651. came to us

  1652. in all

  1653. humility

  1654. and gentleness

  1655. we pray

  1656. that in

  1657. small ways

  1658. day by day

  1659. you would

  1660. help us

  1661. to grow

  1662. more and

  1663. more

  1664. into being

  1665. like Jesus

  1666. in all

  1667. of those

  1668. ways

  1669. we pray

  1670. for your

  1671. forgiveness

  1672. for all

  1673. the ways

  1674. that we

  1675. are shaped

  1676. by the

  1677. world

  1678. around us

  1679. and all

  1680. the ways

  1681. that it

  1682. does not

  1683. resemble

  1684. your

  1685. gospel

  1686. and we

  1687. pray that

  1688. you would

  1689. help us

  1690. in this

  1691. world

  1692. then

  1693. to be

  1694. people

  1695. who

  1696. are

  1697. reworked

  1698. refashioned

  1699. by your

  1700. gospel

  1701. and because

  1702. of that

  1703. who are

  1704. sent out

  1705. as sheep

  1706. among

  1707. wolves

  1708. help us

  1709. to be

  1710. both wise

  1711. and innocent

  1712. in following

  1713. our saviour's

  1714. teaching

  1715. we pray

  1716. for this

  1717. in his

  1718. name

  1719. amen
