  1. Let's read Scripture together.

  2. This is the text from which the sermon will be based tonight.

  3. ! Matthew 7-12.

  4. We're working our way through the Sermon on the Mount.

  5. ! Just a few weeks left.

  6. And Jesus says this in Matthew 7-12.

  7. Ask, and it will be given to you.

  8. Seek, and you will find.

  9. Knock, and it will be opened to you.

  10. For everyone who asks, receives.

  11. And the one who seeks, finds.

  12. And to the one who knocks, it will be opened.

  13. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?

  14. Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?

  15. If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,

  16. how much more will your Father, who is in heaven, give good gifts, good things to those who ask him?

  17. So, whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.

  18. For this is the law and the prophets.

  19. This is God's Word to us tonight.

  20. My name is Chris.

  21. It's my privilege to open God's Word for us tonight.

  22. Before I do that, let's pray together that God would enlighten our minds, open up to us,

  23. open our minds, open our ears, open our hearts to receive the truth of his Word.

  24. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the opportunity we have to come before you.

  25. We ask, Lord, that you would open our eyes as we read your Scripture,

  26. that you'd open our ears so we can hear.

  27. Lord, open our hearts so that these words will penetrate deep into us, change us,

  28. so that we can live lives worthy of kingdom citizens.

  29. We pray in Jesus' name.

  30. Amen.

  31. So, we've been working through the Sermon on the Mount,

  32. and the Sermon on the Mount is a teaching from Jesus that tells us what it means to live like citizens of the kingdom of heaven.

  33. The section that we're in, I think we've just finished the section with the reading that Corey read for us today,

  34. is all about the law and the prophets, the Old Testament, the Bible as it was in Jesus' day.

  35. And it shaped the religious, moral, civil lives of all the people who were listening to him.

  36. In the section that we're in, I think it begins in chapter 5, verse 17,

  37. because in chapter 5, verse 17, Jesus says,

  38. Do not think that I've come to abolish the law and the prophets.

  39. I've not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  40. So, Jesus is telling the people who are listening that he's not come to do away with the laws that they had learned until this point,

  41. but he's coming to complete them.

  42. He's coming to bring them to fulfillment.

  43. And from that point, until where we read to today,

  44. Jesus has been explaining to us what it means not just to obey laws,

  45. like we might tick boxes on a form,

  46. but what it means for them to enter into our hearts,

  47. for them to penetrate us,

  48. really change us.

  49. And not just a list of rules,

  50. but a way of living,

  51. a way of being before God.

  52. Because the way that we live

  53. really matters.

  54. It matters to us.

  55. It matters to the people we live with,

  56. the people we live around.

  57. And it matters to God.

  58. We stop reading at verse 12.

  59. And Jesus has again come round to the law and the prophets.

  60. And this time,

  61. he gives us a summary

  62. of what it all means.

  63. This is it.

  64. According to Jesus,

  65. the law and the prophets,

  66. all the Old Testament writings boil down

  67. to this.

  68. Do to other people

  69. what you would have them do to you.

  70. We don't think that this teaching's

  71. entirely unique to Jesus.

  72. So, scholars think that maybe 3,000 years

  73. before Jesus came into the world,

  74. people were living by a maxim

  75. that was something like this.

  76. Very similar.

  77. We call it the golden rule now.

  78. That's what it might be titled in your Bible.

  79. And before Jesus came,

  80. it existed as something like,

  81. don't do to other people

  82. what you wouldn't want them to do to you.

  83. But rather than telling us what not to do,

  84. Jesus is telling us what to do.

  85. He says,

  86. so whatever you wish that others would do to you,

  87. do to them,

  88. for this is the law and the prophets.

  89. And so why is that significant?

  90. Why does that matter?

  91. Well, I think it's significant

  92. because it moves our mindset

  93. from just avoiding harm

  94. to actively looking

  95. to do good to people.

  96. But to be able to do that,

  97. to be able to live

  98. like kingdom citizens,

  99. we need to be transformed

  100. into kingdom people.

  101. people.

  102. Because we can't do that by ourselves.

  103. And so the rest of the passage

  104. that we read,

  105. verses 7 to 11,

  106. offer us a way

  107. of becoming kingdom people.

  108. If you want to live

  109. like a person

  110. of the kingdom of God,

  111. you have to come to God

  112. and you have to ask Him

  113. to change you.

  114. You have to come to God

  115. and say to Him,

  116. God, I want to be different.

  117. I read Your Word.

  118. I see the truth.

  119. This is the kind of person

  120. that I want to be.

  121. This is how I want to live.

  122. And I can't do it by myself.

  123. Lord, don't leave me

  124. the way that I am.

  125. So verses 7 to 11

  126. are about prayer.

  127. And Jesus has already spoken

  128. quite a bit about prayer.

  129. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  130. He's warned us

  131. against hypocritical prayer.

  132. So standing in the spotlight,

  133. making sure everyone sees us

  134. so that everyone can see

  135. how prayerful,

  136. how holy we are.

  137. He's warned us against

  138. long prayers

  139. or repetitious prayers

  140. that think that we'll be heard

  141. because we say lots of words.

  142. And then in chapter 6,

  143. as we went through,

  144. I say we,

  145. I wasn't here,

  146. but you guys did,

  147. went through as a congregation

  148. the Lord's Prayer,

  149. where he teaches us.

  150. He gives us a template

  151. for how to approach God

  152. in our prayer life.

  153. So,

  154. tonight,

  155. this is what Jesus tells us

  156. to do

  157. with kingdom prayer.

  158. There's three things.

  159. things.

  160. And the first

  161. is this.

  162. Jesus is calling you,

  163. even tonight,

  164. to pray like your life

  165. depends on it.

  166. In English,

  167. if we take the words

  168. ask,

  169. seek,

  170. not,

  171. it makes this lovely little

  172. three-letter acronym,

  173. ask,

  174. which is really easy to remember

  175. and quite handy

  176. to keep in your pocket.

  177. But I think

  178. the truth is

  179. that a simple ask

  180. doesn't do justice

  181. to the emphasis

  182. that Jesus places

  183. on the words

  184. that he uses here.

  185. Matthew records

  186. for us here

  187. words that Jesus uses

  188. and he uses

  189. a rhetorical device.

  190. We call it

  191. the power of three.

  192. So,

  193. friends,

  194. Romans,

  195. countrymen,

  196. I came,

  197. we came,

  198. we saw,

  199. we conquered.

  200. And he's repeating

  201. it three times

  202. to emphasize

  203. just how important

  204. it is to us.

  205. This isn't a nonchalant ask,

  206. like asking somebody

  207. to pass you the salt

  208. at the dinner table.

  209. This is something

  210. much more intentional,

  211. much more deliberate,

  212. much more intense.

  213. Even the words

  214. that Jesus uses

  215. increase in intensity

  216. if you think about them.

  217. Because first of all,

  218. he says ask,

  219. which is

  220. opening your mouth

  221. to the person

  222. before you.

  223. Very simple.

  224. But the next step

  225. is to seek,

  226. which at the very least

  227. involves lifting your head

  228. and scanning about.

  229. And thirdly,

  230. he says to knock,

  231. which adds

  232. a physical element.

  233. You can't knock

  234. without moving your body.

  235. So,

  236. Jesus is increasing

  237. the emphasis,

  238. the intensity

  239. of the words

  240. as he speaks.

  241. And to add

  242. to that as well,

  243. in the original language,

  244. ask,

  245. seek,

  246. knock

  247. carries the sense

  248. of ongoing action.

  249. So,

  250. it's not a one-time thing.

  251. We could take

  252. ask,

  253. seek,

  254. knock

  255. to mean something like

  256. knock and keep on knocking.

  257. Ask and keep on asking.

  258. Seek and keep on seeking.

  259. Isn't that

  260. a one-and-done,

  261. one-time word

  262. with the Lord

  263. for something?

  264. And it isn't a

  265. I know he's there

  266. when I need him

  267. approach to prayer.

  268. What we're told here

  269. is to come to God

  270. with a burning desire

  271. to be heard.

  272. And to come

  273. again

  274. and again

  275. and again

  276. over

  277. and over

  278. and over.

  279. Like a five-year-old

  280. might come to you

  281. because they want a bunny.

  282. Maybe that's a personal

  283. anecdote.

  284. But we're so bad

  285. at asking,

  286. at coming to God

  287. in this way.

  288. Because for us,

  289. I think,

  290. admitting

  291. that there's something

  292. that we need

  293. that we can't fix

  294. by ourselves

  295. takes,

  296. our pride

  297. takes a dent.

  298. And more than that,

  299. I think

  300. for a lot of the time,

  301. we can question

  302. whether we think

  303. prayer works.

  304. Is prayer

  305. actually

  306. that important

  307. after all?

  308. Sometimes our pride

  309. makes us think

  310. we don't have weaknesses.

  311. Sometimes our pride

  312. stops us from

  313. seeing those weaknesses.

  314. And sometimes

  315. our pride

  316. tells us

  317. that we don't think

  318. prayer means anything

  319. at all.

  320. when it comes

  321. to being

  322. citizens

  323. of God's kingdom,

  324. we need to recognize

  325. deep down

  326. that we're not enough.

  327. We're not enough.

  328. And we can't do this

  329. on our own.

  330. We can't earn

  331. our way

  332. into

  333. this kingdom

  334. no matter

  335. how hard we work.

  336. Look at the things

  337. that Jesus said

  338. it takes

  339. to be a citizen

  340. of the kingdom

  341. of heaven.

  342. Things that we've

  343. thought about already

  344. in the Sermon on the Mind.

  345. And then let's ask

  346. which of us

  347. would not want

  348. to be

  349. a citizen

  350. of that kingdom?

  351. How many of us

  352. would not want

  353. to live in a place

  354. that's populated

  355. with people

  356. who are always good?

  357. Always in control

  358. of their anger?

  359. Are non-judgmental?

  360. People

  361. always seeking

  362. peace?

  363. People who are

  364. committed,

  365. always loyal,

  366. who are always

  367. truthful,

  368. continually generous?

  369. That's not a list

  370. of Christian desires.

  371. This is what

  372. everybody wants

  373. to see.

  374. This is the kind

  375. of Scotland,

  376. the Edinburgh

  377. that we all

  378. want to live in.

  379. But if we're

  380. honest with

  381. ourselves,

  382. which one of us

  383. can manage

  384. to live out

  385. one of these

  386. attributes perfectly

  387. on our own,

  388. let alone all of them?

  389. If we hang around,

  390. sometimes when you

  391. apply for citizenship

  392. of a country

  393. or you have to

  394. pass a language test,

  395. so I think that

  396. if we all hung around

  397. for church long enough,

  398. we could learn

  399. the language

  400. of this kingdom.

  401. We could put

  402. phrases together

  403. that make it sound

  404. like we belong here.

  405. But to be a citizen

  406. of God's kingdom,

  407. learning the language,

  408. saying the words,

  409. paying lip service

  410. is not enough.

  411. It has to be

  412. who we are.

  413. It has to be

  414. pressed down

  415. inside of us,

  416. imprinted

  417. onto our hearts.

  418. So which one of us

  419. thinks that we can

  420. measure up on our own?

  421. Which one of us

  422. even thinks,

  423. well,

  424. I could give it a go?

  425. because right back

  426. at the start

  427. of Jesus'

  428. sermon on the mount,

  429. he says that the people

  430. who will inherit

  431. the kingdom

  432. are the poor

  433. in spirit.

  434. Poor in spirit

  435. has got nothing

  436. to do with your

  437. bank balance,

  438. but it's about

  439. your posture

  440. towards God.

  441. It's about

  442. understanding

  443. that there's

  444. nothing you have

  445. that you can

  446. offer to God

  447. in exchange

  448. for your passport

  449. into his kingdom.

  450. Not your time,

  451. not your savings,

  452. not your talents,

  453. not your best effort.

  454. It's recognizing

  455. that whatever

  456. you have materially,

  457. whatever gifts

  458. God has given

  459. to you

  460. as a person,

  461. you're spiritually

  462. destitute.

  463. There's nothing

  464. you can do

  465. to lift yourself

  466. up

  467. from your

  468. spiritual poverty

  469. community.

  470. If you think

  471. that you could

  472. work your way

  473. into the kingdom,

  474. have a go

  475. at being good

  476. enough to get in,

  477. you've already

  478. fallen at the

  479. first hurdle.

  480. This is why

  481. Jesus is so

  482. insistent

  483. that his followers

  484. pray.

  485. That's why

  486. he repeats it,

  487. increases in

  488. intensity,

  489. and insists on

  490. constantly coming

  491. to God in prayer

  492. again and again

  493. and again,

  494. asking,

  495. seeking,

  496. knock,

  497. knock,

  498. knocking on

  499. heaven's door.

  500. Passionate,

  501. consistent,

  502. utter reliance

  503. on God

  504. to shape us

  505. into the kind

  506. of people

  507. who can live

  508. in his kingdom.

  509. Prayer,

  510. as Jesus outlines

  511. it for us here,

  512. is less a thing

  513. we do

  514. and more the way

  515. that we live.

  516. Jesus is teaching

  517. that we're to pray

  518. as though our life

  519. depends on it

  520. because our life

  521. does depend

  522. on God

  523. entirely.

  524. We're creatures

  525. of absolute

  526. dependence

  527. on our

  528. absolute

  529. God.

  530. Prayer is

  531. acting like it.

  532. There's a

  533. theologian,

  534. a Puritan theologian

  535. called Richard Baxter

  536. and he said

  537. that prayer

  538. is the breath

  539. of the new

  540. creature.

  541. A new creature,

  542. somebody changed

  543. by Jesus.

  544. Prayer isn't

  545. a tool

  546. that you keep

  547. up your sleeve

  548. for when you

  549. need it.

  550. It's what

  551. sustains a Christian

  552. moment to

  553. moment.

  554. It's vital,

  555. so vital

  556. for Christians,

  557. Baxter says,

  558. that to be

  559. without prayer

  560. is to be

  561. without breath.

  562. Do you pray

  563. to God

  564. like your life

  565. depends on it?

  566. Take a moment

  567. to think about

  568. the state

  569. of your prayer

  570. life today,

  571. right now.

  572. Is prayer

  573. the thing

  574. that you first

  575. think of

  576. when you open

  577. your eyes?

  578. Is prayer

  579. the thing

  580. that you're

  581. most committed

  582. to as you

  583. go about

  584. your day?

  585. Or has

  586. your prayer

  587. life become

  588. like it's

  589. automated?

  590. What do you

  591. need to change?

  592. What are the

  593. things when you

  594. go home tonight

  595. that you can

  596. change to

  597. make your

  598. prayer life

  599. more fruitful?

  600. How can you

  601. pray like

  602. your life

  603. depends on

  604. it?

  605. Okay,

  606. secondly,

  607. pray to

  608. the life

  609. of Christ

  610. pulsates

  611. in your

  612. heart.

  613. We've spoken

  614. about the

  615. context of

  616. this passage

  617. being really

  618. important,

  619. and context

  620. is really

  621. important for

  622. every passage,

  623. because the

  624. danger is if

  625. we take

  626. a statement

  627. like ask

  628. and it will

  629. be given

  630. you,

  631. and we

  632. copy and

  633. paste it

  634. and stick

  635. it on a

  636. t-shirt or

  637. stick it on

  638. a mug,

  639. when we

  640. look at it

  641. by itself,

  642. we can

  643. think,

  644. well,

  645. God says

  646. that all

  647. I have to

  648. do is ask

  649. for something,

  650. and then

  651. he'll give

  652. me anything

  653. that I

  654. want.

  655. Some people

  656. do think

  657. like this,

  658. we know

  659. that they

  660. do,

  661. people call

  662. it power

  663. prayers,

  664. or name

  665. it and

  666. claim it

  667. praying,

  668. you say

  669. what you

  670. want,

  671. God will

  672. provide it,

  673. but it's

  674. dangerous,

  675. because it

  676. reduces the

  677. gospel down

  678. to being

  679. about our

  680. health and

  681. our wealth,

  682. we think,

  683. God,

  684. I'm going

  685. to need

  686. a pay

  687. rise,

  688. God,

  689. I'm going

  690. to need

  691. a guarantee

  692. that I'm

  693. not going

  694. to get

  695. lower than

  696. a C

  697. in my

  698. Hebrew

  699. exam,

  700. God,

  701. I want

  702. at least

  703. two

  704. grandchildren

  705. by the

  706. time I'm

  707. 60,

  708. God,

  709. I know

  710. you can

  711. do this,

  712. oh yeah,

  713. God is

  714. a giver

  715. of all

  716. good gifts,

  717. everything

  718. that we

  719. have is

  720. from God,

  721. and God

  722. can do

  723. these

  724. things,

  725. but the

  726. problem

  727. with name

  728. it and

  729. claim it

  730. power

  731. prayers

  732. is that

  733. they treat

  734. God like

  735. some sort

  736. of genie

  737. who's on

  738. hand to

  739. fulfill our

  740. desires,

  741. and what

  742. that reveals

  743. in the

  744. heart of

  745. a person

  746. is that

  747. they want

  748. the things

  749. that God

  750. can give

  751. them and

  752. not God

  753. himself.

  754. I think

  755. it also

  756. assumes

  757. that we

  758. think that

  759. we know

  760. better

  761. what we

  762. need

  763. than

  764. God

  765. does,

  766. and a

  767. God

  768. who

  769. doesn't

  770. know

  771. more

  772. than

  773. you

  774. is

  775. not

  776. a

  777. God

  778. that

  779. you

  780. want

  781. to

  782. trust

  783. in.

  784. The

  785. epistle

  786. of

  787. James

  788. is a

  789. letter

  790. that was

  791. written

  792. by one

  793. of

  794. Jesus'

  795. followers,

  796. probably

  797. Jesus'

  798. half-brother,

  799. so likelihood

  800. he heard

  801. Jesus

  802. saying,

  803. if not

  804. these exact

  805. words,

  806. things very

  807. like them,

  808. and near

  809. the beginning

  810. of his

  811. letter,

  812. he uses

  813. language really

  814. similar to

  815. our ask

  816. and it

  817. will be

  818. given

  819. you,

  820. and James

  821. says that

  822. the thing

  823. that we're

  824. to ask

  825. for is

  826. wisdom,

  827. and wisdom

  828. is required

  829. if we're

  830. going to

  831. follow the

  832. path of

  833. a citizen,

  834. a kingdom

  835. citizen.

  836. We need to

  837. know how

  838. to discern

  839. between being

  840. judgmental

  841. and naive,

  842. and we know

  843. that wisdom

  844. is a good

  845. thing for us

  846. to pray for.

  847. King Solomon,

  848. hundreds of

  849. years before

  850. Jesus,

  851. he had a

  852. dream one

  853. night,

  854. and God

  855. came to

  856. him and

  857. said,

  858. ask me

  859. for whatever

  860. you want

  861. and I'll

  862. give it

  863. to you.

  864. And the

  865. thing that

  866. Solomon

  867. asked for

  868. was an

  869. understanding

  870. mind to

  871. discern between

  872. good and

  873. evil.

  874. Solomon asked

  875. for wisdom,

  876. and God was

  877. pleased that

  878. Solomon asked

  879. for wisdom,

  880. and so he

  881. answered his

  882. prayer and

  883. he gave him

  884. wisdom.

  885. He made him

  886. the wisest

  887. man that's

  888. ever lived.

  889. Even today,

  890. even people who

  891. don't think the

  892. Bible is true

  893. still use Solomon

  894. as a cultural

  895. reference for

  896. what it means

  897. to be really

  898. wise.

  899. But despite

  900. a promising

  901. start,

  902. despite all

  903. this wisdom,

  904. Solomon fell

  905. into sin,

  906. he turned

  907. to idols,

  908. and he looked

  909. to things that

  910. weren't God

  911. to satisfy

  912. him.

  913. If the

  914. wisest man

  915. who's ever

  916. lived fell

  917. away from

  918. God, how

  919. much more

  920. clear can

  921. it be that

  922. we need to

  923. be constantly,

  924. persistently

  925. pursuing after

  926. God in

  927. prayer?

  928. Solomon

  929. shows us

  930. that wisdom

  931. is good,

  932. to ask for

  933. wisdom is

  934. good, but

  935. discernment

  936. alone isn't

  937. enough.

  938. There's a

  939. parallel passage

  940. to this

  941. passage in

  942. Luke chapter

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  943. 11.

  944. And there we

  945. can read the

  946. same passage,

  947. it's almost

  948. word for

  949. word.

  950. Ask and it

  951. will be given

  952. to you,

  953. seek and you

  954. will find,

  955. knock and

  956. the door will

  957. be opened

  958. for you.

  959. For everyone

  960. who asks

  961. receives,

  962. and the one

  963. who seeks

  964. finds, and

  965. to the one

  966. who knocks,

  967. the door

  968. will be

  969. opened.

  970. But at

  971. the end of

  972. the Luke

  973. account,

  974. Luke tells

  975. us the

  976. what,

  977. the good

  978. thing that

  979. God will

  980. give to

  981. his children

  982. who ask.

  983. He says,

  984. if you

  985. then,

  986. although you're

  987. evil, know

  988. how to give

  989. good gifts

  990. to your

  991. children,

  992. how much

  993. more will

  994. the heavenly

  995. father give

  996. the Holy

  997. Spirit to

  998. those who

  999. ask him?

  1000. Be asking,

  1001. seeking,

  1002. knocking,

  1003. because God

  1004. is ready and

  1005. waiting to

  1006. gift you the

  1007. Holy Spirit.

  1008. What does

  1009. that mean?

  1010. Well, it's

  1011. the Holy

  1012. Spirit,

  1013. the third

  1014. person of

  1015. the Godhead,

  1016. who enters

  1017. into believers'

  1018. hearts when

  1019. they put their

  1020. trust in

  1021. Jesus.

  1022. And the

  1023. Holy Spirit

  1024. never leaves.

  1025. It's a

  1026. mark of your

  1027. citizenship of

  1028. the kingdom of

  1029. heaven,

  1030. irrevocable

  1031. and secure.

  1032. And he

  1033. dwells in

  1034. believers,

  1035. working in

  1036. them, changing

  1037. their hearts,

  1038. renewing

  1039. them, shaping

  1040. them more

  1041. and more

  1042. into the

  1043. image of

  1044. Jesus.

  1045. One

  1046. theologian

  1047. describes what

  1048. the Holy

  1049. Spirit does

  1050. like this.

  1051. The work

  1052. of the Holy

  1053. Spirit is

  1054. to make

  1055. the life

  1056. of Christ

  1057. pulsate in

  1058. the life of

  1059. the believer

  1060. so that we

  1061. live not,

  1062. but Christ

  1063. lives in

  1064. us.

  1065. We're to

  1066. pray so

  1067. diligently for

  1068. the Holy

  1069. Spirit that

  1070. he would

  1071. increase in

  1072. our lives,

  1073. that he

  1074. would fill

  1075. us up with

  1076. the good

  1077. things of

  1078. God so

  1079. that we

  1080. can be

  1081. made to

  1082. live more

  1083. and more

  1084. like Jesus

  1085. did.

  1086. So that

  1087. good things,

  1088. love, joy,

  1089. peace,

  1090. forbearance,

  1091. kindness,

  1092. goodness,

  1093. faithfulness,

  1094. gentleness,

  1095. and self-control

  1096. come pouring

  1097. out of us.

  1098. I wonder if

  1099. we are seeing

  1100. evidence of the

  1101. Holy Spirit

  1102. working in

  1103. our lives.

  1104. Is your

  1105. heart pulsating

  1106. with Christ

  1107. likeness?

  1108. Is it

  1109. evident to

  1110. the people

  1111. around you?

  1112. Do you

  1113. get angry

  1114. way less

  1115. than you

  1116. might once

  1117. have?

  1118. Do people

  1119. see you

  1120. becoming more

  1121. and more

  1122. humble?

  1123. Do you

  1124. exude joy in

  1125. your life,

  1126. thankful for

  1127. the things

  1128. that God's

  1129. given you

  1130. rather than

  1131. always being

  1132. worried about

  1133. the next

  1134. thing that

  1135. you want

  1136. to get?

  1137. Those are

  1138. all signs

  1139. that the

  1140. Holy Spirit's

  1141. working in

  1142. you.

  1143. This is

  1144. what we

  1145. are to

  1146. pray for

  1147. so

  1148. unwaveringly

  1149. and

  1150. impassionately

  1151. because the

  1152. way to be

  1153. shaped into

  1154. a citizen

  1155. of the

  1156. kingdom of

  1157. heaven is

  1158. by imitating

  1159. the life of

  1160. the king.

  1161. And to

  1162. do that,

  1163. we need

  1164. help.

  1165. And if you

  1166. are producing

  1167. this kind of

  1168. fruit in your

  1169. life, if you

  1170. are noticing

  1171. that you have

  1172. changed, if

  1173. people around

  1174. you are, what

  1175. a witness that

  1176. is to the

  1177. power of

  1178. God and

  1179. what a

  1180. witness to

  1181. the power

  1182. of prayer.

  1183. We so

  1184. often look for

  1185. miraculous

  1186. cures to

  1187. terminal illnesses

  1188. or for

  1189. survivors of

  1190. horrific accidents

  1191. as evidence

  1192. that God's

  1193. working in

  1194. the world.

  1195. But the

  1196. slow, steady

  1197. shaping of

  1198. his people

  1199. to be more

  1200. like his

  1201. son is

  1202. clear evidence

  1203. of the

  1204. power God

  1205. offers to

  1206. those who

  1207. ask for

  1208. it.

  1209. Thirdly, and

  1210. lastly, pray

  1211. because God

  1212. guarantees the

  1213. best answer.

  1214. So we said

  1215. this passage is

  1216. about prayer,

  1217. and I think we

  1218. can be even

  1219. more specific

  1220. than that.

  1221. I think we

  1222. can say that

  1223. this passage is

  1224. about the

  1225. God-given

  1226. guarantee

  1227. that your

  1228. praying life

  1229. will be

  1230. rewarded.

  1231. This whole

  1232. passage is

  1233. filled with

  1234. the assurance

  1235. that we

  1236. will receive.

  1237. Ask and

  1238. it will be

  1239. given to

  1240. you.

  1241. Seek and

  1242. you will

  1243. find.

  1244. Knock and

  1245. the door

  1246. will be

  1247. opened.

  1248. For

  1249. everyone who

  1250. asks

  1251. receives,

  1252. and the

  1253. one who

  1254. seeks

  1255. finds,

  1256. and to

  1257. the one

  1258. who knocks,

  1259. it will

  1260. be

  1261. opened.

  1262. These are

  1263. statements of

  1264. certainty.

  1265. And to

  1266. emphasize the

  1267. point, in

  1268. verses 9 and

  1269. 10, Jesus

  1270. uses these

  1271. rhetorical

  1272. questions that

  1273. I think are

  1274. deliberately a

  1275. bit ridiculous.

  1276. He asks

  1277. parents, if

  1278. your son

  1279. asks for

  1280. bread, would

  1281. you give

  1282. him a

  1283. stone?

  1284. Or if

  1285. he asks

  1286. for fish,

  1287. would you

  1288. give him

  1289. a serpent?

  1290. We know

  1291. that not

  1292. all parents

  1293. are good

  1294. parents.

  1295. Some

  1296. children

  1297. suffer

  1298. terribly,

  1299. and we

  1300. pray against

  1301. that evil.

  1302. But generally

  1303. speaking,

  1304. parents

  1305. intuitively

  1306. know how

  1307. to give

  1308. good things

  1309. to their

  1310. children.

  1311. The

  1312. unspoken

  1313. answer to

  1314. these

  1315. rhetorical

  1316. questions is,

  1317. none of us,

  1318. Jesus, we

  1319. all know how

  1320. to give good

  1321. things to

  1322. our children.

  1323. Jesus

  1324. says,

  1325. if you

  1326. then, being

  1327. evil, know

  1328. how to give

  1329. good gifts

  1330. to your

  1331. children, how

  1332. much more

  1333. will your

  1334. father who's

  1335. in heaven give

  1336. good things to

  1337. those who

  1338. ask him?

  1339. Driving

  1340. home the

  1341. point, Jesus

  1342. compares God

  1343. the father with

  1344. an earthly

  1345. parent.

  1346. He says,

  1347. if you who

  1348. struggle to be

  1349. filled with love

  1350. the way that

  1351. you should be,

  1352. can still

  1353. give good

  1354. things to

  1355. your children,

  1356. how much

  1357. more likely

  1358. is it that

  1359. your perfectly

  1360. good, perfectly

  1361. merciful, perfectly

  1362. holy father

  1363. will give good

  1364. things to his

  1365. children when

  1366. they ask?

  1367. Giving them

  1368. exactly what

  1369. they need.

  1370. The answer is

  1371. infinitely more

  1372. likely.

  1373. certainty.

  1374. God doing

  1375. what he says

  1376. he's going

  1377. to do is

  1378. not even a

  1379. likelihood, it's

  1380. a certainty.

  1381. Just like a

  1382. good father

  1383. always answers,

  1384. just like a

  1385. good father,

  1386. God answers

  1387. our prayers by

  1388. giving us

  1389. exactly what

  1390. we need,

  1391. not always

  1392. what we want.

  1393. earlier in

  1394. the series,

  1395. Ryan quoted

  1396. Tim Keller

  1397. and Tim Keller

  1398. said, God

  1399. will give you

  1400. what you

  1401. would have

  1402. asked for

  1403. if you

  1404. knew everything

  1405. he knows.

  1406. God does

  1407. answer, he

  1408. does give

  1409. exactly what

  1410. you need.

  1411. So if you're

  1412. sitting in your

  1413. seat tonight

  1414. and you're

  1415. holding back

  1416. from pouring

  1417. yourself out

  1418. to God

  1419. in prayer

  1420. like this

  1421. because you're

  1422. afraid that

  1423. you'll put

  1424. yourself out

  1425. there and

  1426. your prayer

  1427. will go

  1428. unanswered,

  1429. well you

  1430. can lay

  1431. that concern

  1432. aside completely

  1433. because right

  1434. now God

  1435. is asking

  1436. you to

  1437. come to

  1438. him.

  1439. When you

  1440. beg and

  1441. search and

  1442. hammer on

  1443. the door of

  1444. heaven to

  1445. be made

  1446. more like

  1447. Jesus,

  1448. it's more

  1449. certain God

  1450. will answer

  1451. your prayers

  1452. than you'll

  1453. answer your

  1454. next phone

  1455. call.

  1456. God gives

  1457. you his

  1458. word.

  1459. Maybe you're

  1460. not ready

  1461. for constant

  1462. unwavering

  1463. passionate

  1464. pursuit of

  1465. God because

  1466. it sounds like

  1467. a lot to

  1468. commit to.

  1469. And if

  1470. that's the

  1471. case,

  1472. then I'd

  1473. invite you to

  1474. think about

  1475. just for a

  1476. moment how

  1477. committed

  1478. Jesus is to

  1479. guaranteeing that

  1480. your prayers

  1481. will be

  1482. answered.

  1483. Jesus is so

  1484. committed to

  1485. making sure your

  1486. prayers are

  1487. answered that

  1488. he died on

  1489. the cross for

  1490. you to

  1491. guarantee it.

  1492. Before Jesus

  1493. went to the

  1494. cross, he was

  1495. in a garden

  1496. with some

  1497. friends.

  1498. And three

  1499. times he went

  1500. to pray to

  1501. his father

  1502. asking,

  1503. seeking,

  1504. knocking.

  1505. Jesus was

  1506. in agony.

  1507. He was

  1508. praying so

  1509. fervently and

  1510. his sweat fell

  1511. to the ground

  1512. like drops of

  1513. blood.

  1514. And Jesus

  1515. prayed to

  1516. God, his

  1517. good,

  1518. merciful

  1519. father, and

  1520. he said,

  1521. is it

  1522. possible for

  1523. me not to

  1524. have to do

  1525. this?

  1526. Father, is

  1527. there any

  1528. other way?

  1529. But you

  1530. know what's

  1531. right.

  1532. There was no

  1533. other way.

  1534. God is a

  1535. God of

  1536. justice.

  1537. When Jesus

  1538. died on the

  1539. cross, he

  1540. didn't die for

  1541. his sin.

  1542. He didn't

  1543. have any.

  1544. He died to

  1545. pay the

  1546. justice for

  1547. your sins.

  1548. So what

  1549. you have

  1550. now is

  1551. access and

  1552. answers.

  1553. You can

  1554. come into

  1555. the presence

  1556. of almighty

  1557. God, not

  1558. as a

  1559. guilty

  1560. prisoner

  1561. before a

  1562. judge given

  1563. a stay of

  1564. execution,

  1565. but as a

  1566. child comes

  1567. before a

  1568. loving father

  1569. who longs to

  1570. be pestered

  1571. by you,

  1572. asking,

  1573. seeking,

  1574. knocking,

  1575. to be made

  1576. more and

  1577. more like

  1578. Jesus,

  1579. your older

  1580. brother who

  1581. sacrificed

  1582. himself to

  1583. save you.

  1584. When you

  1585. pray to God

  1586. for God,

  1587. your prayer

  1588. is guaranteed

  1589. to be

  1590. answered,

  1591. because that

  1592. prayer of

  1593. Jesus that

  1594. he prayed in

  1595. the garden

  1596. went unanswered.

  1597. God,

  1598. let's pray.

  1599. Lord God,

  1600. we thank

  1601. you for

  1602. the opportunity

  1603. we have to

  1604. pray to you.

  1605. We thank

  1606. you for the

  1607. gift of

  1608. prayer.

  1609. Teach us,

  1610. Lord, to

  1611. pray to

  1612. you as

  1613. we should,

  1614. fervently,

  1615. diligently,

  1616. consistently.

  1617. Lord,

  1618. make us

  1619. people who

  1620. breathe in

  1621. and pray

  1622. out.

  1623. we thank

  1624. you for

  1625. the assurance

  1626. we have

  1627. that you

  1628. will hear

  1629. us because

  1630. of what

  1631. Jesus has

  1632. done.

  1633. And we

  1634. pray in

  1635. his name.

  1636. Amen.

  1637. Amen.

  1638. Amen.
