  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me, actually, to know, as I'm preaching, how to

  11. deal with the types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Jonathan, as you know, is joining us to preach the Word. And for those who don't know, Jonathan

  13. used to be, I believe, a ministry intern here, and now Jonathan and his wife are serving the

  14. Lord on the other side of the river. So thanks, Jonathan, for coming to preach.

  15. Thank you. So just remaining standing, let us pray as we open God's Word to meditate upon it.

  16. Heavenly Father, I thank you for your presence where your Word has opened your speaking. And

  17. I pray your Holy Spirit would come upon the words that are spoken this morning, that you would

  18. direct my words, but also that you would help all of us to receive your words, the truth that you

  19. have for us today. I pray that you would touch our hearts in ways that we might have tried to hide

  20. our hearts, and that you would give us the grace to walk in the newness of life which the Gospel

  21. brings. And I pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. You may be seated.

  22. Amen. So it's a pleasure for me to be here. It's a joy to see very familiar faces, faces that I've,

  23. people that I've known for years, that many of you have played such a key role in my life. And it's

  24. such a joy to be here, open God's Word with you. As some of you know, my wife and I moved to Quebec,

  25. and just as I say, the other side of the river. It's along the river, but it's a little bit,

  26. it's on the other border, close to where Hawkesbury is. If you know the little town called Rego,

  27. we moved there a few years ago. And I've been working over the last couple of years as a cook

  28. and supervisor in a federal government training college. And so I work there, and it's been a joy

  29. to work there and be able to be a light as much as the Lord gives grace among the people there.

  30. And I want to share with you a brief story of what has happened there. So I work Thursdays to

  31. Sundays, but the deal is I work starting at two or starting at one or two to the evening, so I don't

  32. miss church Sunday mornings. But anyway, I get to work there. And one of the things that's pretty cool

  33. that happens is that on Sundays when I get there and I serve people their meals, they ask me,

  34. how was your day? What did you do today? And so it kind of pushes me to out of my comfort zone to say,

  35. well, I went to church this morning. And there was one guy in particular, I won't say his name,

  36. but he would often come. He was kind of like the life of the party and all that. But every time I

  37. would ask him, hey, how are you doing? How's it going? And he would kind of show up in the line,

  38. and he said, he would always say, well, I'm alive. To which I would respond, hey, I'm glad you're alive.

  39. I'm glad you're here. It's good to see you. And we proceed to do that. And then he would ask me,

  40. well, what did you do this morning? How was your day? How was your weekend? And on one particular

  41. Sunday, I said, well, I went to church this morning. And he was kind of like, oh, interesting.

  42. And I said, I taught Sunday school as well. And to which he responded, oh, that's really good. I

  43. guess if it makes you happy, like that's a very good thing. I know, to serve your community that

  44. way and all that. And he kind of explained away what was happening and kind of, you know, led the

  45. conversation to a segue to something else. And, you know, for me as a Christian, my primary concern

  46. isn't necessarily being happy in life. Of course, I want to be happy in life. But there's another way

  47. around that. But I wasn't going to try to explain that to him. Like, the conversation is closed,

  48. buddy. Like, I'm not going to try to say, well, actually, that's not how I, like, he would just

  49. think that I try to be unhappy in life. And I go to church and associate church with pursuing

  50. unhappiness. And that's just kind of weird. The story that we're looking at today is a

  51. story about Jesus who is encountering someone who we might call a relativist, someone who

  52. kind of lives by his own law, his own preferences, his own ambitions. And his life is kind of

  53. centered around that. And Jesus is encountering him. And what do you think Jesus would say to

  54. someone like that? Would he say something like, hey, I'm so glad that you're doing what makes

  55. you happy in life? So let's look at the text. We're looking at Matthew chapter 9. I invite

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  56. you to turn with me, if you have your Bibles, to chapter 9, verse 9, which goes something like this.

  57. As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth.

  58. And so we'll pause here. We'll just kind of unpack who are the characters, what is the setting.

  59. Jesus has just healed a paralytic person. And so he did a miracle, very clearly a miracle. He wasn't

  60. there with, you know, surgical kind of equipment or anything. Like, it was a miracle. He spoke,

  61. and the man was healed. And it was kind of like a play on words. Which one is easier,

  62. to say your sins are forgiven or take up your mat and walk? Jesus was just really highlighting the power

  63. of his word, which is something which belongs to the creator. And now he's here. He's going across,

  64. you know, just some of the different territories in Rome, in the Roman Empire. And he's crossing a

  65. border, and he finds someone called Matthew. Now, Matthew is a Jewish man. The other gospels of

  66. Mark and Luke tell us that his name was Levi. But Matthew decided to abandon that name and associate

  67. with the new name that is Matthew. And so Jesus is calling Matthew. And Matthew is a Jewish man.

  68. He is working for the Roman Empire. And so already you get a sense that he is an asymmetrical

  69. character. Is that too big a word? He's kind of like, he's Jewish in his being, but he puts on

  70. Roman clothes and works for Rome. And at that time, the Jewish people were seen as the oppressors,

  71. or the victims, and the Romans were seen as the oppressors of the victims. You know, it's kind of

  72. like this weird thing happening where Matthew is just kind of working for the bad guys, if you will.

  73. And so there's something asymmetrical about him. There's something strange about Matthew. And the text

  74. doesn't say exactly what it is, but I get the impression that Matthew was just tired of being on the

  75. losing team. You know, maybe he just wanted to work for the winning team. He would want his efforts to

  76. go forward. You know, he maybe had a skill that he wanted to contribute in the world. And so as a tax

  77. collector, which is actually originally someone who would work in the border and would receive kind of

  78. the shipping, and he would kind of add taxes to whatever cost the shipping would be. And that way,

  79. he would gain money. And the way that people did that back in those days is that they would add extra

  80. fees that he would keep the money. That was something that the Roman Empire kind of valued. So Matthew was

  81. this character who was not prized by the Jewish people. He was not someone who was well-received,

  82. appreciated. He basically cut himself off of his tribe to pursue his ambitions.

  83. And so in that sense, we can see him as a relativist. So what would Jesus say to someone

  84. like that? What would Jesus say? Would he say like, my friend, hey, I'm so glad you're just,

  85. you know, doing what makes you happy in life. You know, someone who's like stealing, someone who's

  86. not honest in his dealings. Like, would Jesus actually say that? Like, just to affirm him? Like,

  87. that's the Canadian thing to say. What would Jesus say? He says here in verse 9, and Jesus said,

  88. follow me. Jesus said, follow me. Now, there's something about human beings that we are followers.

  89. And if you're here thinking, I'm a follower of no one. I am my own person, and I just do whatever I do,

  90. and whatever I want to do. Well, from the time you were a baby, you were actually following

  91. your mother's cues. You were looking at her eyes. You're following her smile, trying to understand

  92. the world through your experience of your mother. So chances are, if you've had that experience,

  93. you're a follower. And if you ever go on YouTube, you definitely hear the call to click, like, and

  94. subscribe to get more of this content. And so the whole world, in a sense of the whole media world,

  95. is based on this premise that we are followers, that we follow things. And me as a cook, I like my,

  96. I have my certain chefs. I have my Greek chef that I follow online, the Indian chef, and all these

  97. different chefs that I kind of learn my recipes from, because I'm kind of learning on the fly. I didn't

  98. go to chef school. So I'm definitely a follower, and I'm sure some of you, maybe in ways that you're

  99. conscious of or unconscious of, are followers as well. And so there's something human, that we are

  100. followers, and we follow either someone or someone's or something or some things. That is really what we

  101. are, and it's not wrong to follow things. That's not the point that I'm making here. There's nothing

  102. wrong with following. But when we make following someone or something the ultimate in our life,

  103. that's when it becomes murky waters. And so Matthew was a relativist who would have followed

  104. his happiness, maybe the happiness of being prosperous, wealthy, famous, appreciated and applauded by Rome.

  105. He was pursuing happiness. And in that sense, happiness, when we follow it as the ultimate,

  106. becomes a tyrant. Now, I know I sound a bit extreme as I'm saying that. But I am guessing that maybe

  107. some of you here might have this similar experience where whenever you feel angry or whenever you feel

  108. sad, you feel guilty. I shouldn't be feeling this. And there's something about, you know, I should be

  109. feeling happy. Or I should brush this off and pursue happiness right away. And maybe if you're a parent,

  110. you've experienced this as well. Your children are crying and you're like, no, no, no, cover the tears.

  111. Let's stop this right away. As soon as possible. This is uncomfortable. Or if your child is screaming,

  112. no, no, no, no, let's stop this. Let's calm this right down. Let's try to find happiness together.

  113. And in a sense, happiness has become an idol. Why? Because happiness is just a fraction of our human

  114. experience. Happiness is just a small part of what it means to be human. And if you read the book of

  115. Psalms, you get a sense that the human experience is way more. The emotional spectrum of what it means

  116. to be human is way bigger. And so happiness is a good thing. Happiness is a very good thing.

  117. It's a gift of God. But pursuing happiness as the ultimate, as the ultimate thing, the very guiding

  118. principle of our life, that's when it becomes a tyrant that we cannot experience the rest of what it

  119. means to be human. And it's impossible not to feel it when you're pursuing happiness. And I am wondering

  120. if Matthew felt this when Jesus came up to him and said, follow me. Follow me. Jesus has two words to

  121. Matthew. And we see that Matthew has a type of conversion experience. When you look at it from

  122. a symbolic, choreographical point of view, we see in verse 9, Matthew rose and followed him.

  123. You think of Isaiah 60 or Psalm 1, when people are, when it says that, blessed is the man who walks

  124. not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.

  125. Matthew was sitting in those who were oppressing the people of God. He was sitting in that sense,

  126. but he decided he saw Jesus, he heard the words of Jesus, and he got up. And he got up and he followed

  127. Jesus. And I want to share with you my first point here, if we can have that on the screen.

  128. Jesus' word is healing power. Jesus' word is healing power. Now why healing power?

  129. We're in the context of the gospel of Matthew here, where Jesus is doing healings. He's doing

  130. multiple healings. And he healed the centurion's servant, where the centurion asked Jesus, would you

  131. say one word and my servant will be healed? And Jesus says, go, he's healed. And same thing with

  132. the paralytic. He says one word and he's healed. And this whole rhetoric of what Matthew is doing here

  133. that he's showing, showcasing the authority of Jesus' word. And what kind of authority is that?

  134. The authority to break us and crush us? No, the authority to heal, to bind what is broken.

  135. And so how does this look like? How does this work? That Jesus' word brings healing.

  136. See, we're made for God's presence. We were made to behold God, to know God, to behold him as the

  137. highest possible being, the highest possible pursuit, the highest goodness, the highest beauty.

  138. That is our original relationship, the intention that God made us for. And you read that in the

  139. early pages of scripture. That is God's intention for us, to know him and behold him. But what our

  140. original ancestors did, Adam and Eve, is that they, having heard the word of the serpent, Satan,

  141. they decided to turn and they didn't follow God anymore. They followed their own selves,

  142. their own ambitions. The devil said that you could be gods if you just eat from the tree of the

  143. knowledge of good and evil. You will be gods. And so they decided to follow their own selves,

  144. their own self-interest, their own autonomy. They became followers of self. And in that sense,

  145. they became distorted. In that sense, there was a breaking off from God. There's no way to have

  146. relationship with God when we follow our own selves, when God is other-oriented in his own being and in

  147. his relationship to his creation. And so in the garden, there was this exile where Adam and Eve were

  148. cast out of the garden. And every human being afterward has experienced this exile of not being

  149. in fellowship, not beholding God, not being in the presence of God. And that has characterized the rest of

  150. humanity ever since. So when Jesus called Matthew, he invited him back into this original knowing and

  151. beholding. There's something about Jesus's words, maybe Jesus's face, the blending of the two,

  152. that Matthew saw, the face of God. And he thought, whoa, I need to follow this man. I need to follow

  153. his man. And as someone who would have worked at the border, I'm sure he would have heard the stories,

  154. the miracles of what Jesus has done. But his time came when Jesus said, follow me. And Matthew,

  155. who is the writer of this gospel that we're looking at, he wrote this down because he has tasted and seen

  156. the goodness of Jesus, the goodness of knowing God and beholding him. He wrote this down so that we

  157. could participate in the same thing. And I don't know where you find yourself today. Maybe you're

  158. not a follower of Jesus. You're a follower of happiness, maybe, or a follower of your pursuit of

  159. wealth or fame, your work, whatever it is, your relationship. You're a follower of something. I know it.

  160. But these things are temporary. And so when we follow something that's temporary, these pursuits

  161. die when we die. The value is ephemeral. It's gone when we're gone. I was talking with one of my

  162. colleagues, co-workers, someone that I supervise. And I asked her, like, look, for this type of job,

  163. you need to have a vision that's higher than merely washing dishes, putting the food out,

  164. serving the people, putting a smile on, and just kind of closing the day, closing the kitchen.

  165. Like, you need to have a vision that's higher than that. And I know that you want to buy a car with

  166. the money that you make, and that's a good vision, but you need something that's even higher than that.

  167. Something that will not perish. Something that will bring you to the next point in your life that

  168. you will carry with you. And once you figure that out, I give you a week to think about it. Once you

  169. figure it out, come tell me so that I can help you reach that goal. We all need to aim for something

  170. that is high. Why not aim for the highest thing? Why not aim for Jesus? If you're not following Jesus,

  171. I want to encourage you that Jesus is the highest possible pursuit in this life. Your life will never

  172. be the same. He will transform it for the good. And I want to invite you to consider that. Hopefully,

  173. as we unpack the rest of the sermon, you'll understand a little bit more what that entails.

  174. But Jesus is good. Jesus is good. He's good for all of us. From wherever background you come from,

  175. he is good. Or maybe you're a follower of Jesus, but you're cold or dull. However, you may feel that

  176. in your heart of hearts. Maybe if I would ask you, how are you doing? You'd say, I don't really know.

  177. I'm just kind of like, I don't know. I just kind of go on and on and on, not really knowing and

  178. kind of in the fog about where you are with Jesus. I would call on you to wake up. Wake up from the

  179. slumber. Maybe you're following idols. Maybe it's the happiness thing that's kind of overtaken your

  180. pursuit of Jesus. You kind of pursued Jesus and happiness, Jesus and something else. Get rid of the

  181. idols. Get rid of these things, these pursuits that don't fill you, that don't give you eternal life.

  182. Turn from them and follow Jesus and ask Jesus to search you and to know you.

  183. And in the words of the great 1980s band, take a chance. Take a chance on Jesus. I'm thinking of

  184. Abba. Maybe it's not a great example, but take a chance on Jesus. Like, if you need to wake up,

  185. take a chance. Like, ask Jesus what it is and just take a chance. Just go up to someone who's in need

  186. and give. Like, honestly, take a chance. Make it tangible, fleshly, real. Make your faith real, incarnate.

  187. Live it out. Or maybe you're a solid follower of Jesus. Well, praise God. I praise God with you for that.

  188. But don't give up. Keep going. Keep bearing fruit in line with the repentance that you've originally started with.

  189. And be thankful to Jesus. Cultivate thankfulness. Keep going. Cultivate thankfulness.

  190. Or lastly, maybe you're a discouraged follower of Jesus. Maybe you've been mocked. People have laughed at you.

  191. Maybe you've suffered loss. I don't know what it is. But as it says in the book of Acts, and I know you've been going through the book of Acts,

  192. rejoice in that you're accounted worthy of suffering for the name, the name of Jesus.

  193. There's no greater honor in suffering for doing good in the name of Jesus.

  194. That is a good thing.

  195. And we want to follow Jesus because His word

  196. is health. His word is healing

  197. power. And His healing power is what brings us

  198. into and fits us for this friendship with God the Trinity,

  199. the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  200. As Jesus heals us,

  201. as we get to see Jesus, we behold Him,

  202. we hear His voice, we receive it,

  203. and we trust in Him.

  204. What happens is that it's not just kind of like,

  205. you know, me here, Jesus there.

  206. It's that

  207. Jesus sends His Holy Spirit.

  208. The very Spirit, the very presence of God

  209. to indwell us.

  210. So our life is not the same, you know.

  211. It's really not Jesus my buddy.

  212. It's really

  213. God in me.

  214. And as the Holy Spirit works in us,

  215. our gaze, our sight

  216. is set upon God the Father in Heaven.

  217. And we're no longer just kind of just walking like this,

  218. looking at the next task,

  219. looking at the next pursuit,

  220. feeling bogged down because it didn't work out,

  221. or feeling good because it worked out,

  222. but feeling anxious because you feel it's going to be taken away from you

  223. at any moment.

  224. We're following God,

  225. the triune God,

  226. who gives new life.

  227. And now what does that look like?

  228. Friendship with God.

  229. We get a beautiful picture

  230. of Matthew beholding Jesus

  231. in the beauty of the gospel

  232. in the next verse.

  233. Let's look at verse 10.

  234. It says,

  235. And as Jesus reclined at table

  236. in the house,

  237. behold, many tax collectors and sinners

  238. came and were reclining

  239. with Jesus

  240. and His disciples.

  241. So Matthew,

  242. presumably out of humility,

  243. he left some details out

  244. which we find in Luke

  245. and in Mark.

  246. It says that Matthew

  247. held a great feast,

  248. a great banquet.

  249. He splurged.

  250. And what did he do?

  251. What did he splurge on?

  252. Well, he received Jesus and His disciples

  253. as well as sinners

  254. and tax collectors.

  255. And this is a reflection

  256. of God's own hospitality

  257. which we celebrate at communion,

  258. that we celebrate that God receives us

  259. and that God feeds us

  260. with His own body,

  261. His own life.

  262. But Matthew is transposing that

  263. into what it means

  264. as a human being.

  265. And so as the gospel grips us,

  266. as the gospel grips us,

  267. we begin to consolidate our lives.

  268. That's where the Holy Spirit leads us.

  269. We begin to consolidate our lives.

  270. We see that Matthew,

  271. he consolidates

  272. his time,

  273. his treasure,

  274. his talents.

  275. He looks at what he has,

  276. does an inventory,

  277. a stock inventory.

  278. He looks at who he knows

  279. and he brings them together.

  280. We see his old friends,

  281. maybe his,

  282. you know,

  283. if you work in an office building,

  284. maybe his smoking buddies

  285. at the bottom of the building

  286. at the entrance

  287. or his,

  288. you know,

  289. his drinking buddies after work.

  290. He says,

  291. come along,

  292. I have something to show you.

  293. And he brings his new Jesus

  294. with them

  295. and together

  296. they share in a meal.

  297. And there's something

  298. absolutely beautiful,

  299. Jesus reclining with them.

  300. It's a very kind of

  301. ancient way

  302. of just,

  303. you know,

  304. being with people

  305. that you would recline

  306. at the table.

  307. But being reclined,

  308. you know,

  309. if you're reclined,

  310. you're not really going anywhere.

  311. Like,

  312. Jesus is not there

  313. kind of looking at the door

  314. like,

  315. okay,

  316. when's the next,

  317. when's the perfect exit moment?

  318. Like,

  319. when is the conversation

  320. kind of dying

  321. so I can gun out?

  322. And I showed my presence,

  323. people know that was here

  324. and then,

  325. phew,

  326. he's out.

  327. No,

  328. he's reclining

  329. at table.

  330. He's eating with them.

  331. He's enjoying

  332. their very presence.

  333. There's something

  334. absolutely beautiful

  335. with that.

  336. Now you might think,

  337. okay,

  338. if I did that,

  339. like,

  340. my friends would reject me.

  341. Like,

  342. I would get pushback.

  343. My neighbors,

  344. if they saw me do that,

  345. like,

  346. if they saw me

  347. receive these sinners,

  348. tax collectors,

  349. with,

  350. you know,

  351. people with the tattoos

  352. or people who smoke

  353. or people who smell different,

  354. like,

  355. if they saw me do that,

  356. like,

  357. I would get pushback.

  358. And they'd probably say something like,

  359. like,

  360. what is up with you

  361. and,

  362. like,

  363. this Jesus stuff?

  364. Like,

  365. you're going a little bit

  366. off the rails here.

  367. Like,

  368. that's a bit too much.

  369. At least move upward.

  370. At least try to invite people

  371. that are higher than you

  372. in your work

  373. or higher than you

  374. in society

  375. so that way you can kind of

  376. move your way up with them.

  377. Like,

  378. that's a good idea.

  379. That's a wise idea.

  380. That's what wise,

  381. sophisticated people do.

  382. Well,

  383. that's exactly the criticism

  384. that Jesus

  385. and Matthew

  386. receive in verse 11.

  387. Let's read it.

  388. Verse 11.

  389. It says,

  390. And when the Pharisees saw this,

  391. they said to his disciples,

  392. Why does your teacher

  393. eat with tax collectors

  394. and sinners?

  395. There you have it.

  396. Why does your teacher

  397. eat with tax collectors

  398. and sinners?

  399. And I'd like to have

  400. my second point

  401. just so we can expound on this.

  402. What is happening here?

  403. What is happening here

  404. is that

  405. Jesus eats

  406. and fellowships

  407. with sinners.

  408. He is clean.

  409. He is mercy of God.

  410. I'll say this again.

  411. Jesus eats with sinners

  412. and eats and fellowships

  413. with sinners.

  414. He is clean.

  415. He is mercy of God.

  416. He is the very definition

  417. of what he means

  418. to be clean.

  419. He's the very definition

  420. of the mercy of God.

  421. And this is what we see

  422. happening here

  423. in this story.

  424. Jesus makes very little

  425. of externals

  426. in case you're wondering,

  427. in case maybe you have forgotten.

  428. The externals,

  429. not so much.

  430. Jesus cares for the heart.

  431. He goes towards

  432. the heart of each

  433. and every single one of us.

  434. And this is a picture,

  435. Jesus eating with

  436. and fellowshipping with

  437. his disciples

  438. and with sinners

  439. and tax collectors.

  440. This is a picture

  441. of what the cross accomplishes.

  442. So that when Jesus

  443. comes down,

  444. you know,

  445. he's not going up the ladder.

  446. He's coming down.

  447. And in a sense,

  448. he came down from heaven

  449. as we read earlier.

  450. Came down from heaven

  451. to be with people

  452. who are hungry,

  453. people who are in need.

  454. And as he is there,

  455. he is fellowshipping with them

  456. to show the ultimate reality

  457. of what is going to happen

  458. in the glory of the resurrection.

  459. That we will have fellowship

  460. and we will eat with Jesus.

  461. That we will have

  462. a good future with Jesus.

  463. So that when he went to the cross,

  464. he took everything

  465. that made us poor

  466. and needy and weak

  467. upon him.

  468. So that we could have

  469. the riches of Jesus.

  470. And the riches

  471. is the very fellowship

  472. of Jesus.

  473. The very knowing

  474. of God himself.

  475. That is the cross

  476. and that is what

  477. Jesus accomplished

  478. at the cross.

  479. And this picture of eating

  480. is a picture of eternity.

  481. When you put your trust

  482. in Jesus.

  483. When you put faith

  484. in Jesus.

  485. Now Jesus is not

  486. this distant hero

  487. with no time

  488. or interest

  489. in you.

  490. In the people

  491. in the story.

  492. He is literally eating.

  493. Literally eating

  494. with them.

  495. He knows

  496. human beings

  497. but he knows you.

  498. He knows your thoughts.

  499. He knows your experiences.

  500. He knows your pursuits.

  501. Your ambitions.

  502. He knows what kind

  503. of imagination you have.

  504. What you dwell on

  505. when you're sitting quiet.

  506. He knows all those things.

  507. And he wants to have

  508. a relationship

  509. with you.

  510. And you may be wondering

  511. yeah but what if I'm

  512. what if I'm disordered?

  513. Like what if I'm financially

  514. just kind of off the rails?

  515. What if just my

  516. my luck in life

  517. I just

  518. I don't have it?

  519. What if

  520. what if I'm not beautiful?

  521. What if I'm not successful?

  522. What if I always get turned down?

  523. What if my sexuality

  524. is just

  525. I don't even have

  526. a definition for it.

  527. I don't even have

  528. a word for it.

  529. I don't even know

  530. where I am.

  531. What if

  532. what if

  533. and what if

  534. Jesus is clean.

  535. He is mercy of God.

  536. And as we put

  537. our faith in him

  538. we receive

  539. his cleanliness.

  540. And that's the beauty

  541. of what the cross

  542. accomplishes.

  543. You see in the Old Testament

  544. there was this concern

  545. that the

  546. the innermost sanctuary

  547. of the presence of God

  548. could be contaminated

  549. because sin

  550. and uncleanliness

  551. would go

  552. and creep towards

  553. like a serpent

  554. towards the inner sanctuary

  555. of the temple

  556. or the tabernacle.

  557. That was the concern.

  558. That was what

  559. all the regulations

  560. were about.

  561. But these regulations

  562. are expired

  563. because Jesus

  564. who is the very

  565. presence of God

  566. he is clean

  567. and like a mountain

  568. has water dripping

  569. all along it

  570. and it's unstoppable.

  571. I live on a mountain

  572. and come springtime

  573. I have to make sure

  574. that my water pump

  575. is functioning

  576. because my basement

  577. will be flooded

  578. in a matter of seconds.

  579. The water is so powerful

  580. and you look at it

  581. flow down the mountain

  582. and it's unstoppable.

  583. And that's the picture

  584. of the Holy Spirit

  585. coming out of Jesus.

  586. And a few chapters later

  587. in this account

  588. we see the unclean woman

  589. the woman with

  590. the issue of blood

  591. she comes to Jesus

  592. and she touches Jesus

  593. and what happens?

  594. Power comes out of Jesus

  595. and she is made clean.

  596. And it's the same thing

  597. same principle

  598. that as we come to Jesus

  599. frail

  600. faulty

  601. as you may be

  602. Jesus is clean

  603. and makes clean.

  604. He is mercy of God.

  605. What he is showing

  606. and that picture

  607. he is showing

  608. for us

  609. what might be for us

  610. if we come to him.

  611. And this

  612. this is made clear

  613. in verse 11.

  614. Let's look at verse 11.

  615. This relationship

  616. with God

  617. and how he makes us clean.

  618. Verse 11 says

  619. And when the Pharisees

  620. saw this

  621. they said to his disciples

  622. why does your teacher

  623. eat with tax collectors

  624. and sinners?

  625. And verse 12

  626. but when he heard it

  627. he said

  628. those who are well

  629. have no need

  630. of a physician

  631. but those who are sick.

  632. What is going on here?

  633. The Pharisees

  634. are not catching on.

  635. They think

  636. that

  637. okay

  638. I can make myself clean

  639. by my religiosity

  640. by obeying rules

  641. obeying laws

  642. pleasing God

  643. like this.

  644. I don't really need

  645. Jesus' power

  646. or cleanliness.

  647. I don't need

  648. the mercy of God.

  649. I can leave that

  650. to the others.

  651. I

  652. follow the principles

  653. of God.

  654. I follow the laws

  655. of God.

  656. Therefore

  657. I am clean

  658. and I'm good.

  659. And that's

  660. the very religious spirit.

  661. That's very contrasted

  662. with the relativist spirit

  663. which is

  664. I don't need

  665. really what to

  666. I don't need

  667. really any laws

  668. or any principles

  669. to follow.

  670. I'm just going

  671. to follow myself

  672. and whatever else

  673. other leader

  674. I can find

  675. on the internet.

  676. So you have

  677. these contrasts.

  678. We have the relativist

  679. who is

  680. all heart

  681. passion

  682. but no external

  683. conformity

  684. and you have

  685. the religious

  686. who is all

  687. external conformity

  688. but no heart.

  689. And their hearts

  690. are

  691. whatever heart

  692. that they have

  693. is revealed

  694. in calling

  695. Jesus

  696. teacher.

  697. See with a teacher

  698. you learn things

  699. and you climb

  700. your way up.

  701. You go up the ladder

  702. and you move

  703. towards

  704. one degree

  705. of glory

  706. if you will

  707. one degree

  708. of healing

  709. of wholeness

  710. to another

  711. to another.

  712. And that's

  713. anyway

  714. that's the hope

  715. that's the anticipation

  716. that's why people

  717. kind of go into it

  718. in the first place.

  719. But Jesus

  720. counters that

  721. he says

  722. in a sense

  723. Matthew

  724. you're not going

  725. to be

  726. you're not a

  727. relativist anymore

  728. but I'm not going

  729. to allow you

  730. to become

  731. a religious

  732. person.

  733. You're going

  734. to follow me.

  735. And what that

  736. looks like

  737. is that Jesus

  738. corrects the Pharisees

  739. by saying

  740. those who are well

  741. have no need

  742. of a physician

  743. but those who are sick.

  744. In a sense

  745. Jesus says

  746. you're going

  747. to relate

  748. to me

  749. as a physician.

  750. You're going

  751. to relate

  752. to me

  753. not as a

  754. teacher first

  755. but as a

  756. physician.

  757. And so

  758. here's my

  759. third point.

  760. The world

  761. says

  762. follow

  763. teachings

  764. for your

  765. healing

  766. and Jesus

  767. says

  768. I will

  769. heal you

  770. then teach

  771. you.

  772. So you see

  773. it's completely

  774. different.

  775. Jesus is not

  776. offering

  777. a religion.

  778. He's not

  779. offering

  780. relativism.

  781. He's offering

  782. a relationship.

  783. a lively

  784. relationship

  785. with your

  786. maker

  787. with your

  788. creator.

  789. He is

  790. your creator

  791. come to you

  792. come to us

  793. this morning

  794. calling

  795. follow me.

  796. He's saying

  797. follow me

  798. to you

  799. to me

  800. so that we

  801. would commit

  802. ourselves to him

  803. and maybe

  804. recommit

  805. ourselves

  806. to him.

  807. And Jesus

  808. has a special

  809. insight into

  810. the human

  811. person.

  812. His word

  813. play here

  814. is really

  815. masterful.

  816. He's talking

  817. about those

  818. who are

  819. well

  820. have no

  821. need of

  822. a physician

  823. but those

  824. who are

  825. sick.

  826. He's talking

  827. about these

  828. deep realities

  829. of what it

  830. means to be

  831. a human

  832. in real time

  833. in real space.

  834. He's saying

  835. that we're

  836. sick.

  837. He's saying

  838. that it's not

  839. good enough

  840. to be

  841. religious.

  842. It's not

  843. good enough

  844. to try

  845. harder.

  846. It's not

  847. good enough

  848. to have

  849. walked with

  850. Jesus

  851. for many

  852. years

  853. having

  854. believed

  855. the gospel

  856. and now

  857. saying

  858. I got it.

  859. I've got

  860. this.

  861. I can

  862. just go

  863. on and

  864. continue

  865. with my

  866. own

  867. thing

  868. and have

  869. my own

  870. mind

  871. about

  872. reality.

  873. Jesus

  874. says we're

  875. sick.

  876. There's

  877. something

  878. sickly

  879. about us,

  880. about each

  881. and every

  882. single one

  883. of us

  884. which is

  885. called

  886. sin.

  887. He's

  888. using

  889. another

  890. layer

  891. as he's

  892. describing

  893. in verse

  894. 13.

  895. Go and

  896. learn what

  897. this means.

  898. I desire

  899. mercy

  900. and not

  901. sacrifice.

  902. For I

  903. came not

  904. to call

  905. the righteous

  906. but sinners.

  907. Those who

  908. are sick,

  909. those who

  910. are sinful

  911. are one

  912. and the

  913. same.

  914. He's

  915. describing

  916. each and

  917. every one

  918. of us

  919. and he's

  920. saying that

  921. he is

  922. the physician

  923. of our

  924. souls.

  925. He is

  926. the only

  927. one who

  928. will make

  929. us right

  930. with God

  931. and he's

  932. the only

  933. one who

  934. will make

  935. us right

  936. with others,

  937. right with

  938. this world.

  939. Jesus is

  940. the physician

  941. of each

  942. and every

  943. one of

  944. us.

  945. Now

  946. Jesus is

  947. also

  948. centering

  949. in on

  950. what it

  951. means to

  952. have a

  953. relationship

  954. with him.

  955. I mentioned

  956. the relativists

  957. have

  958. internal

  959. kind of

  960. some

  961. heart

  962. passion

  963. but no

  964. external

  965. conformity

  966. whereas

  967. the religious

  968. have external

  969. conformity

  970. but no

  971. heart

  972. really

  973. whereas

  974. a relationship

  975. with God

  976. starts with

  977. the heart

  978. and moves

  979. outward

  980. into external

  981. conformity.

  982. We see

  983. this in

  984. verse 13.

  985. He says

  986. having said

  987. that he

  988. is the

  989. physician

  990. now he

  991. says

  992. go and

  993. learn

  994. what this

  995. means.

  996. I desire

  997. mercy

  998. and not

  999. sacrifice.

  1000. He's

  1001. quoting from

  1002. the Old

  1003. Testament

  1004. and he's

  1005. saying

  1006. I desire

  1007. God

  1008. desires

  1009. from

  1010. God's

  1011. own

  1012. heart

  1013. his own

  1014. being

  1015. what he

  1016. wants

  1017. from us

  1018. is to

  1019. share

  1020. in his

  1021. own

  1022. being.

  1023. God

  1024. is love

  1025. and he

  1026. wants us

  1027. to share

  1028. in that

  1029. love.

  1030. In your

  1031. translation

  1032. it probably

  1033. says

  1034. mercy

  1035. and in

  1036. the original

  1037. language

  1038. from which

  1039. this is

  1040. quoted

  1041. the word

  1042. is

  1043. chesed

  1044. which is

  1045. to say

  1046. God's

  1047. covenantal

  1048. love

  1049. God's

  1050. faithfulness

  1051. the very

  1052. fact that

  1053. God has

  1054. been faithful

  1055. when Israel

  1056. has been

  1057. unfaithful

  1058. the very

  1059. fact that

  1060. God has

  1061. been faithful

  1062. when you

  1063. and I

  1064. have been

  1065. unfaithful

  1066. that he

  1067. is there

  1068. he's pouring

  1069. out his

  1070. love

  1071. upon him

  1072. upon us

  1073. upon the

  1074. Holy Spirit

  1075. as the

  1076. Father pours

  1077. his love

  1078. upon Jesus

  1079. Jesus

  1080. pours his

  1081. love

  1082. back to

  1083. the

  1084. Father

  1085. and the

  1086. very

  1087. love

  1088. is the

  1089. love

  1090. of the

  1091. Holy Spirit

  1092. which wraps

  1093. us in

  1094. into this

  1095. eternal

  1096. dance of

  1097. God

  1098. do you

  1099. know this

  1100. love

  1101. is this

  1102. love

  1103. living in

  1104. you

  1105. that is

  1106. the ministry

  1107. of the

  1108. Holy Spirit

  1109. to participate

  1110. in the

  1111. eternal

  1112. love of

  1113. God

  1114. and what

  1115. is absolutely

  1116. beautiful

  1117. and stunning

  1118. and riveting

  1119. of this

  1120. story

  1121. is that

  1122. you're never

  1123. too far

  1124. you're never

  1125. too poor

  1126. never too

  1127. ugly

  1128. never too

  1129. shameful

  1130. never too

  1131. old

  1132. never too

  1133. young

  1134. never too

  1135. disordered

  1136. never too

  1137. clumsy

  1138. never too

  1139. weak

  1140. never too

  1141. lost

  1142. for Jesus

  1143. to receive

  1144. you

  1145. and to

  1146. heal you

  1147. but it

  1148. starts with

  1149. following

  1150. Jesus

  1151. and that's

  1152. a form

  1153. of worship

  1154. I'll put it

  1155. this way

  1156. following

  1157. Jesus

  1158. begins

  1159. with

  1160. beholding

  1161. him

  1162. seeing

  1163. him

  1164. looking

  1165. at

  1166. him

  1167. our

  1168. face

  1169. is the

  1170. window

  1171. of our

  1172. soul

  1173. and the

  1174. way

  1175. in which

  1176. our

  1177. face

  1178. is

  1179. directed

  1180. shows

  1181. where

  1182. our

  1183. attention

  1184. is

  1185. and where

  1186. our

  1187. attention

  1188. is

  1189. is

  1190. where

  1191. our

  1192. allegiance

  1193. is

  1194. and where

  1195. our

  1196. allegiance

  1197. is

  1198. where

  1199. our

  1200. actions

  1201. will

  1202. follow

  1203. and so

  1204. we need

  1205. to look

  1206. to

  1207. Jesus

  1208. our whole

  1209. life

  1210. is found

  1211. in him

  1212. so as we

  1213. look to

  1214. Jesus

  1215. we follow

  1216. him

  1217. and then

  1218. as a matter

  1219. of discipleship

  1220. we learn

  1221. to discern

  1222. Jesus'

  1223. mercy

  1224. towards

  1225. each one

  1226. of us

  1227. as the

  1228. true

  1229. physician

  1230. of your

  1231. souls

  1232. Jesus

  1233. is always

  1234. more willing

  1235. to receive

  1236. us

  1237. to heal

  1238. us

  1239. if you're

  1240. going to go

  1241. to Jesus

  1242. and say

  1243. Jesus

  1244. you're the

  1245. healer

  1246. of my

  1247. soul

  1248. would you

  1249. receive

  1250. me

  1251. I'm

  1252. broken

  1253. and I've

  1254. been following

  1255. you for

  1256. ten years

  1257. like I

  1258. don't know

  1259. why

  1260. but I'm

  1261. just in

  1262. this place

  1263. of

  1264. unclarity

  1265. and lack

  1266. of

  1267. truth

  1268. and I've

  1269. just been

  1270. in the

  1271. same sins

  1272. Jesus

  1273. is not

  1274. going to

  1275. go

  1276. I'm

  1277. your

  1278. teacher

  1279. bad

  1280. student

  1281. no

  1282. he's

  1283. the

  1284. physician

  1285. he will

  1286. say

  1287. yes

  1288. come

  1289. I'm

  1290. so glad

  1291. you've

  1292. come

  1293. back

  1294. I will

  1295. make

  1296. you

  1297. clean

  1298. I will

  1299. show

  1300. you

  1301. the

  1302. mercies

  1303. of

  1304. God

  1305. and

  1306. lastly

  1307. as a

  1308. matter

  1309. of

  1310. mission

  1311. learning

  1312. God's

  1313. mercy

  1314. for

  1315. you

  1316. and

  1317. for

  1318. others

  1319. we

  1320. see

  1321. this

  1322. pictured

  1323. Matthew

  1324. he

  1325. lived

  1326. it

  1327. out

  1328. he

  1329. received

  1330. the

  1331. mercy

  1332. of

  1333. Jesus

  1334. and

  1335. he

  1336. showed

  1337. it

  1338. to

  1339. others

  1340. he

  1341. consolidated

  1342. his

  1343. life

  1344. he

  1345. brought

  1346. his

  1347. old

  1348. friends

  1349. his

  1350. new

  1351. Jesus

  1352. together

  1353. and

  1354. it's

  1355. a

  1356. matter

  1357. of

  1358. mission

  1359. of

  1360. being

  1361. ambassadors

  1362. of

  1363. Jesus

  1364. in

  1365. this

  1366. world

  1367. of

  1368. knowing

  1369. the

  1370. mercy

  1371. of

  1372. God

  1373. and

  1374. showing

  1375. it

  1376. to

  1377. others

  1378. and

  1379. that

  1380. is

  1381. carried

  1382. out

  1383. by

  1384. the

  1385. fruit

  1386. of

  1387. the

  1388. spirit

  1389. you

  1390. don't

  1391. need

  1392. to

  1393. be

  1394. an

  1395. extravagant

  1396. missionary

  1397. who

  1398. knows

  1399. all

  1400. the

  1401. perfect

  1402. zingers

  1403. and lines

  1404. on how

  1405. to

  1406. have

  1407. people

  1408. reconsider

  1409. Jesus

  1410. you

  1411. just

  1412. need

  1413. to

  1414. bear

  1415. fruit

  1416. in

  1417. the

  1418. Holy

  1419. Spirit

  1420. that

  1421. enough

  1422. is

  1423. strange

  1424. in

  1425. this

  1426. world

  1427. showing

  1428. love

  1429. peace

  1430. patience

  1431. kindness

  1432. gentleness

  1433. faithfulness

  1434. that

  1435. is

  1436. strange

  1437. I

  1438. tell

  1439. you

  1440. just

  1441. doing

  1442. that

  1443. is

  1444. far

  1445. reaching

  1446. and

  1447. so

  1448. as

  1449. we

  1450. consider

  1451. these

  1452. things

  1453. to

  1454. follow

  1455. Jesus

  1456. discern

  1457. his

  1458. mercy

  1459. as

  1460. well

  1461. as

  1462. learning

  1463. his

  1464. mercy

  1465. for

  1466. us

  1467. and

  1468. for

  1469. others

  1470. extending

  1471. it

  1472. to

  1473. the

  1474. world

  1475. as

  1476. we

  1477. consider

  1478. these

  1479. things

  1480. we'll

  1481. pray

  1482. and

  1483. we'll

  1484. close

  1485. I

  1486. invite

  1487. you

  1488. to

  1489. stand

  1490. and

  1491. I

  1492. have

  1493. a

  1494. final

  1495. point

  1496. which

  1497. is

  1498. a

  1499. prayer

  1500. and

  1501. maybe

  1502. wherever

  1503. you

  1504. are

  1505. in

  1506. this

  1507. walk

  1508. this

  1509. prayer

  1510. applies

  1511. I've

  1512. tried

  1513. to

  1514. make

  1515. it

  1516. so

  1517. that

  1518. wherever

  1519. you

  1520. are

  1521. this

  1522. prayer

  1523. is

  1524. relevant

  1525. let's

  1526. pray

  1527. this

  1528. together

  1529. Jesus

  1530. you

  1531. alone

  1532. are

  1533. the

  1534. physician

  1535. of

  1536. my

  1537. soul

  1538. I

  1539. renounce

  1540. all

  1541. idols

  1542. in

  1543. my

  1544. life

  1545. and

  1546. receive

  1547. your

  1548. cleansing

  1549. mercy

  1550. today

  1551. help

  1552. me

  1553. to

  1554. follow

  1555. you

  1556. first

  1557. and

  1558. foremost

  1559. and

  1560. to

  1561. show

  1562. the

  1563. same

  1564. mercy

  1565. to

  1566. those

  1567. around

  1568. me

  1569. in

  1570. your

  1571. name

  1572. Jesus

  1573. amen

  1574. and if

  1575. maybe

  1576. if it's

  1577. the first

  1578. time

  1579. that you're

  1580. doing

  1581. this

  1582. come talk

  1583. with me

  1584. or come

  1585. talk

  1586. with someone

  1587. just let's

  1588. talk about

  1589. this

  1590. let's talk

  1591. about this

  1592. new

  1593. Jesus

  1594. thing

  1595. and let's

  1596. bow our

  1597. hearts

  1598. father in

  1599. heaven

  1600. I thank you

  1601. for your

  1602. mercy

  1603. revealed to

  1604. us in

  1605. the person

  1606. of your

  1607. son

  1608. Jesus

  1609. and I

  1610. thank you

  1611. that you

  1612. are not

  1613. distant

  1614. but you're

  1615. close

  1616. that you

  1617. indwell

  1618. us

  1619. that you

  1620. come in

  1621. us

  1622. through your

  1623. Holy Spirit

  1624. and I

  1625. pray that

  1626. as we

  1627. consider

  1628. these

  1629. things

  1630. as we

  1631. meditate

  1632. upon

  1633. these

  1634. truths

  1635. that you

  1636. would

  1637. give us

  1638. great

  1639. hope

  1640. in knowing

  1641. that you

  1642. are the

  1643. physician

  1644. of our

  1645. souls

  1646. and that

  1647. you would

  1648. give us

  1649. just the

  1650. grace to

  1651. take action

  1652. to take a

  1653. chance for

  1654. you

  1655. to cast

  1656. our whole

  1657. lives upon

  1658. you

  1659. to not rely

  1660. upon our

  1661. own strength

  1662. but to seek

  1663. after you

  1664. to set our

  1665. gaze upon

  1666. you

  1667. and I

  1668. pray that

  1669. in Jesus

  1670. mighty name

  1671. amen
