  1. Our reading of Scripture tonight is from the Gospels from Matthew chapter 7 verses 13-23.

    Matthew 7:13–23

  2. ! This is the text upon which the sermon will be based.

  3. !

  4. And these are the words of Jesus.

  5. Enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide, and the way is easy that leads to destruction.

  6. And those who enter by it are many, for the gate is narrow, and the way is hard that leads to life.

  7. And those who find it are few.

  8. Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

  9. You will recognize them by their fruits.

  10. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes or figs from thorn bushes?

  11. So every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.

  12. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

  13. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  14. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

  15. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  16. but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  17. On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name,

  18. and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name.

  19. And then will I declare to them, I never knew you.

  20. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  21. This is God's word.

  22. It's great to be with you guys tonight.

  23. All right, so I grew up in Alabama in the U.S.,

  24. and I actually went through a bluegrass phase, bluegrass music,

  25. which is actually not very typical even in Alabama to go through a bluegrass phase.

  26. But I encountered a very unknown at that time young artist named Allison Krauss

  27. and her band Union Station.

  28. And there was a specific song that she did that to this day I still love.

  29. And this started me on a bluegrass kick, and it was called Two Highways.

  30. And the lyric goes,

  31. Two highways lay before us.

  32. Which one will I choose?

  33. Down one lane I find happiness.

  34. Down the other I would lose.

  35. There is no one that I can trust.

  36. I must decide alone.

  37. The decision is an awful one.

  38. Which one will lead me home?

  39. Down the other I think.

  40. That's actually a metaphor of something that we find very often in our culture,

  41. whether it's a poem by Robert Frost called The Road Not Taken,

  42. or The Matrix, where it's like take either the red pill or the blue pill.

  43. This idea that we're coming to a crossroads or maybe a fork in the road,

  44. and you've got to make a decision.

  45. And this decision has lasting implications,

  46. but you must make a decision.

  47. Which one will you choose?

  48. Even that song I mentioned by Alison Krauss,

  49. like this is an awful decision.

  50. Because if I make the wrong decision,

  51. like what are the implications going to be?

  52. But there are times in our lives where we must actually make a decision like that.

  53. It becomes a crossroad or fork in the road.

  54. And that is actually the metaphor that Jesus gives us in the first invitation here for the Sermon on the Mount.

  55. So we've come to the end of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  56. We're going to focus tonight specifically on verses 13 and 14,

  57. those first two verses that Corey read.

  58. And Jesus is actually going to give us three different metaphors that both kind of,

  59. they all have the same idea.

  60. And that is, you have two choices to make.

  61. You have to make a choice of which one.

  62. And he tells us in this passage in verse 13,

  63. which one is the right choice.

  64. He tells us, choose this one in his kind graciousness.

  65. And it's one of those things that we're at a point,

  66. it's like you've heard this sermon,

  67. what is your response going to be?

  68. Which road will you choose?

  69. For those that like to talk about Jesus as a good teacher or a prophet or whatever,

  70. and they're like, we like his teachings.

  71. Jesus says, you can't just hear my teaching.

  72. You have to make a choice.

  73. Which road will you choose?

  74. In our culture today, you might actually hear something that says,

  75. you know, well, all roads lead to God.

  76. And Jesus says, no, there are two roads.

  77. One leads to God.

  78. One leads to destruction.

  79. And he tells us which one to choose.

  80. Enter by the narrow gate, he says.

  81. Enter by the narrow gate.

  82. Jesus is pretty straightforward about this.

  83. He tells us, enter by the narrow gate.

  84. Life in the kingdom that he's been telling us about,

  85. he's been laying out for what it looks like for human flourishing,

  86. because this is the way life is meant to be lived according to God's way.

  87. He says, this is how it is.

  88. Now here's the invitation.

  89. Enter the narrow gate.

  90. To enter this life in the kingdom,

  91. you must enter his way into the narrow gate.

  92. He goes on to say,

  93. for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction.

  94. So we're going to talk about two gates in two ways.

  95. Two gates, two ways.

  96. The first gate is what he calls the wide gate here.

  97. There is one gate that is wide that has many people going through it.

  98. Now, when I think about or hear about a wide gate,

  99. we just went on a train trip to a lot of different places.

  100. We were on a lot of trains and went through a lot of gates.

  101. And we kind of were dragging our bags and we encountered that one gate.

  102. Maybe this was user error and not the gate's fault.

  103. But I get to it and it's like,

  104. this thing does not want me and my bag to go through.

  105. So I'm kind of stuck in this place where I have to kind of lift up the gate,

  106. lift up the bag over the gate and put it in front of me.

  107. And there were probably better ways to do that.

  108. But I was like, I've got to get through this and this is what I have to do.

  109. And I look over and there's this wide gate over there that it's like,

  110. sometimes when they see it's a group or a family,

  111. they will open it for you and let you go through it.

  112. And it's so nice when you're carrying baggage to go through a wide gate.

  113. And when we talk about here that the gate is wide,

  114. there are many who want to go through it because they want to bring their bags with them.

  115. What are we talking about when we're talking about bags?

  116. What are some of the things that people have a hard time letting go of

  117. because they want to take it through the gate that they want to choose?

  118. And it's things like my demands of,

  119. I will follow Jesus if.

  120. I will follow him if he allows me to also do this.

  121. If he gives me the life that I think I deserve,

  122. I'm all on board with that.

  123. Or, I could never believe in a God who fill in the blank.

  124. I'll believe in him if he fits into what I want him to be like.

  125. How could a loving God allow this to happen?

  126. On my terms, I like this God.

  127. People think that they can go in that way

  128. because the wide gate lets in all kinds of things.

  129. All kinds of beliefs.

  130. Not many demands, if any demands.

  131. But Jesus says,

  132. to follow him you must deny yourself.

  133. Take up his cross.

  134. Take up your cross and follow him.

  135. I've got to let go of my very self.

  136. I've got to let go of my agenda,

  137. my thoughts and dreams and plans for my life,

  138. in order to adopt his will for my life.

  139. We must let go of even the idea

  140. that I can walk through this gate

  141. on my own initiative and my own performance

  142. and by my good works,

  143. I will be accepted before God.

  144. That's the wide gate

  145. that allows anything to pass through.

  146. But that is not what Jesus tells us.

  147. So we have to be asking the question,

  148. what are we holding on to

  149. that Jesus would tell us

  150. we must let go of in order to follow him?

  151. The gate is wide

  152. and most people are going through it.

  153. So for us to choose the narrow gate,

  154. we're going to have to do what's unpopular.

  155. We're going to have to make

  156. the uncomfortable decisions.

  157. As Martin Luther,

  158. Martin Luther,

  159. Martin Lloyd-Jones says

  160. that we can't go in the way

  161. that the crowd is going.

  162. That immediately Jesus is telling us

  163. that there must be a break

  164. with us and the world.

  165. Entering the narrow gate

  166. implies that

  167. we're going to stand out as different.

  168. The world and the flesh,

  169. they don't like this, right?

  170. So enter in the narrow gate

  171. because the wide gate

  172. lets a lot of stuff through.

  173. And many are those who find it.

  174. Some might think

  175. that God would be more loving

  176. if he would just widen the gate.

  177. But he truly knows

  178. what is for our good

  179. and calls us to trust him in that.

  180. To believe that he knows

  181. what is for our good.

  182. So that's one gate.

  183. We've got the wide gate.

  184. But then Jesus says

  185. there's another gate.

  186. The narrow gate.

  187. The gate,

  188. this entrance itself is narrow.

  189. And this is kind of important

  190. the way we think about evangelism.

  191. Telling others the good news.

  192. There have been trends

  193. throughout history.

  194. Even still happens in the U.S.

  195. where it's like a just believe,

  196. check this box,

  197. say this prayer,

  198. of whatever,

  199. and you will be in the kingdom,

  200. in the family of God.

  201. We must be honest

  202. about how we present

  203. following the Lord Jesus.

  204. It says it's a narrow gate

  205. and few are those who find it

  206. because it's got to be his way

  207. and no other way.

  208. It's not narrow

  209. because it's some mystery

  210. or hard to understand.

  211. It's narrow

  212. because it's hard.

  213. The way is hard

  214. that we'll talk about

  215. in just a minute.

  216. It's narrow

  217. because we have to count

  218. the cost in following Jesus.

  219. And the crowds,

  220. they're going through

  221. the broad gate.

  222. We must follow Jesus

  223. on the narrow way.

  224. So let's look at the two ways.

  225. So we have two gates,

  226. the wide gate

  227. and the narrow gate.

  228. We have two ways.

  229. This idea of talking about

  230. a way or a path,

  231. that's pretty common

  232. in the Bible

  233. to talk about following God

  234. in paths of obedience

  235. and righteousness.

  236. It's not a coincidence

  237. that the early church,

  238. you see this in the book of Acts,

  239. that it was called,

  240. Christianity was called

  241. the way

  242. because there was a way

  243. to follow Jesus.

  244. This idea of having two paths.

  245. We see all throughout

  246. the Old Testament,

  247. even the first Psalm,

  248. Psalm 1, verse 6,

    Psalms 1:6

  249. you see this contrast

  250. between the way of righteousness

  251. and the way of the wicked.

  252. In Proverbs 4, verses 18 and 19

    Proverbs 4:18

  253. is a good illustration.

  254. It says,

  255. but the path of the righteous

  256. is like the light of dawn

  257. which shines brighter

  258. and brighter until full day.

  259. The way of the wicked, however,

  260. is like deep darkness.

  261. They do not know

  262. over what they stumble.

  263. So becoming a Christian

  264. can be described

  265. as entering into the kingdom of God

  266. evidenced by a life

  267. of following in His righteous ways.

  268. You don't live a righteous life

  269. in hope of getting through

  270. the narrow gate.

  271. It is we enter the narrow gate

  272. through the life, death,

  273. and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  274. He even says in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  275. that He's the door for the sheep.

  276. We enter through Him

  277. and after we follow Him

  278. on the path of obedience

  279. and the path of righteousness.

  280. But the broad gate,

  281. the wide gate,

  282. also has a way that is easy.

  283. It says here in the ESV.

  284. This is the path of least resistance.

  285. As I mentioned,

  286. you can kind of believe

  287. whatever you want

  288. and do whatever you want to do

  289. through this gate

  290. and on this path.

  291. Scripture even tells us

  292. that it's a lot easier

  293. to just live according to the flesh.

  294. In Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  295. and Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  296. we see this picture

  297. that the flesh is very strong

  298. against us wanting to follow the Spirit

  299. and there's an opposition going on.

  300. The natural flesh,

  301. He says in 1 Corinthians,

  302. the natural man

  303. even sees the things of Christ

  304. and sees them as folly.

  305. It seems foolishness

  306. to our natural flesh

  307. to follow the ways of Christ.

  308. I mean,

  309. just the natural man

  310. wants to do things

  311. on our own initiative.

  312. Surely it's not a gift.

  313. It's got to be earned, right?

  314. It's not just as easy

  315. as believing and following Jesus.

  316. I've got to work my way

  317. so that my good outweighs my bad.

  318. That's the way the natural man thinks.

  319. But the way of the wide gate,

  320. the way is easy.

  321. Now that word easy

  322. literally means

  323. to be broad or spacious.

  324. It's only used one time

  325. here in the New Testament

  326. but used a lot in the Old Testament

  327. where you might have

  328. like Psalm 31

  329. that says you have set my feet

  330. in a broad place.

  331. Wide and spacious.

  332. Job 36.16 says

  333. He also allured you

  334. out of distress

  335. into a broad place

  336. where there's no cramping

  337. and what was set on your table

  338. was full of fatness.

  339. So it's this idea

  340. in the Old Testament

  341. of broad and spacious

  342. gives this idea of freedom.

  343. It's this idea

  344. of plenty

  345. and abundance

  346. and thriving.

  347. And so the way

  348. of the wide gate,

  349. the broad way

  350. promises freedom.

  351. It looks like,

  352. oh, this is what freedom looks like

  353. where I can pursue

  354. whatever I want to pursue

  355. but it leads to destruction.

  356. I mean,

  357. we think about

  358. the original temptation

  359. back in the garden

  360. where it says

  361. that she saw

  362. that the tree

  363. was good for food

  364. and that it was

  365. a delight to the eyes.

  366. It was desired

  367. to make one wise

  368. yet God said

  369. it leads to death.

  370. You see

  371. in Proverbs 14.12

  372. that there's a way

  373. that seems right to man

  374. but its end

  375. leads to death.

  376. Paul talks about this

  377. in Philippians chapter 3

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  378. where he talks about

  379. those whose end

  380. is destruction.

  381. It says

  382. their God

  383. is their belly

  384. or their appetites

  385. and they glory

  386. in their shame.

  387. They're proud about

  388. things they should

  389. be ashamed for.

  390. Their minds

  391. are set

  392. on earthly things.

  393. That is a great description

  394. of the broad

  395. and easy way.

  396. Just follow your heart.

  397. You do you.

  398. Right?

  399. It's the false promises

  400. that if I can just

  401. live up

  402. to who I really

  403. am inside

  404. that's what true

  405. freedom

  406. and even life is

  407. is learning

  408. who I really am.

  409. It's all about

  410. finding that

  411. inner journey.

  412. There's a way

  413. that seems right to man

  414. but the end of it

  415. leads to death.

  416. It seems like

  417. it would be great

  418. to just pursue

  419. and achieve success

  420. fame

  421. money

  422. whatever it might be.

  423. There's a great quote

  424. from Jim Carrey

  425. the American actor

  426. for those of you

  427. who are younger than me

  428. you might know him

  429. from like Sonic the Hedgehog

  430. or something.

  431. But Jim Carrey

  432. said this

  433. he said

  434. I think everybody

  435. should get rich

  436. and famous

  437. and do everything

  438. they ever dreamed of

  439. so that they can see

  440. that it's not the answer.

  441. It's emptiness.

  442. There was a

  443. a professional athlete

  444. in

  445. I coach

  446. the American football team

  447. at the University of Edinburgh

  448. so I'm into

  449. American football a lot

  450. and

  451. athlete after athlete

  452. talk about getting

  453. these big contracts

  454. and

  455. they're winning

  456. Super Bowls

  457. which is the highest honor

  458. ultimate success

  459. and they're asking

  460. questions like

  461. surely there's more

  462. to life than this.

  463. We think

  464. that by pursuing

  465. our dreams

  466. and all these

  467. having ultimate freedom

  468. that I can do

  469. whatever I want to

  470. success

  471. fame

  472. money

  473. fortune

  474. all those things

  475. that's going to lead

  476. to happiness.

  477. The end of it

  478. leads to death.

  479. We

  480. choose this

  481. wide path

  482. by default

  483. because it's a lot

  484. easier that way

  485. the way is easy

  486. it promises

  487. great things

  488. but the end

  489. is destruction.

  490. But then Jesus

  491. says in verse 14

  492. the gate is narrow

  493. and the way is hard

  494. that leads

  495. to life.

  496. This is by the way

  497. Jesus' way of giving

  498. an invitation.

  499. Hey the way is hard

  500. the gate is narrow

  501. few are those

  502. who find it.

  503. He says in Luke 14

  504. like

  505. look if you want

  506. to follow me

  507. like

  508. you don't build

  509. a tower

  510. without counting

  511. the cost.

  512. A king doesn't

  513. go to war

  514. without first

  515. making sure

  516. he's going to have

  517. all the troops

  518. and logistics

  519. that he needs.

  520. You got to count

  521. the cost

  522. and make sure

  523. that you understand

  524. that I'm worth it.

  525. you must count

  526. the cost

  527. to follow me.

  528. This way

  529. is the path

  530. of resistance.

  531. There's a lot

  532. going against you

  533. on the hard

  534. way.

  535. So we have to

  536. ask the question

  537. what makes

  538. that way hard?

  539. What makes it

  540. hard to follow

  541. Jesus and to

  542. choose this path

  543. to go through

  544. the narrow

  545. gate?

  546. So this word

  547. hard

  548. it means

  549. to compress

  550. or to press

  551. like a grape?

  552. It's a word

  553. that's often

  554. used for

  555. suffering

  556. and affliction.

  557. The way

  558. of following

  559. Christ

  560. is often

  561. found

  562. with suffering

  563. and tribulation

  564. and when you're

  565. squeezed

  566. like that

  567. your true

  568. self

  569. really comes

  570. out.

  571. When someone

  572. is really

  573. squeezed

  574. and pressed

  575. what's on

  576. the inside

  577. starts coming

  578. on the outside.

  579. We see a good

  580. example of

  581. what it means

  582. to live

  583. on this path

  584. in the two

  585. different ways.

  586. We see this

  587. in the parable

  588. of the sower

  589. actually

  590. in Matthew

  591. 13

  592. and Mark

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  593. chapter 4

  594. where Jesus

  595. talks about

  596. that there

  597. are four

  598. kinds of soils

  599. when someone

  600. is sowing

  601. the word

  602. of God

  603. the gospel

  604. that the

  605. seed lands

  606. on four

  607. different soils.

  608. This is the

  609. first one

  610. lands on

  611. the hard

  612. path

  613. and in

  614. this parable

  615. he said

  616. birds come

  617. and take

  618. it away.

  619. The second

  620. seed falls

  621. on rocky

  622. ground

  623. which is

  624. basically

  625. a thin

  626. layer of

  627. topsoil

  628. with rock

  629. underneath it

  630. and it

  631. says that

  632. it immediately

  633. springs up

  634. but then

  635. because it

  636. can't grow

  637. with its

  638. roots

  639. it can't

  640. go deep

  641. that it

  642. immediately

  643. dies.

  644. he said

  645. the third

  646. soil

  647. is the

  648. seed that

  649. falls among

  650. thorns

  651. where it

  652. starts growing

  653. but it's

  654. choked out

  655. by the

  656. thorns

  657. and then

  658. the fourth

  659. falls on

  660. good soil

  661. and when

  662. it falls

  663. on good

  664. soil

  665. it produces

  666. fruit

  667. thirty

  668. sixty

  669. hundred

  670. fold

  671. and then

  672. Jesus

  673. goes on

  674. to explain

  675. that parable

  676. and he

  677. says the

  678. seed that

  679. fell on

  680. the hard

  681. ground

  682. on the

  683. path

  684. and said

  685. the birds

  686. came and

  687. plucked it

  688. up

  689. that is

  690. Satan

  691. when he

  692. comes

  693. and he

  694. snatches

  695. the word

  696. off the

  697. hard ground

  698. before it

  699. has a

  700. chance

  701. to do

  702. anything

  703. so one

  704. reason

  705. why

  706. the way

  707. is hard

  708. is there's

  709. an enemy

  710. who does

  711. not want

  712. you to

  713. hear

  714. the good

  715. news

  716. that wants

  717. to snatch

  718. the word

  719. out of your

  720. life before

  721. it can take

  722. any root

  723. wants you

  724. to be

  725. distracted

  726. and to

  727. not hear

  728. the voice

  729. of the

  730. Lord

  731. the second

  732. one

  733. that falls

  734. on rocky

  735. soil

  736. the one

  737. that

  738. couldn't

  739. get

  740. depth

  741. Jesus

  742. says

  743. this is

  744. when

  745. tribulation

  746. or persecution

  747. comes

  748. and people

  749. fall away

  750. so they

  751. start out

  752. well

  753. and then

  754. when things

  755. get hard

  756. they fall

  757. away

  758. one of the

  759. reasons that

  760. the way

  761. is hard

  762. is because

  763. there's a

  764. lot of

  765. persecution

  766. and things

  767. that come

  768. our way

  769. that come

  770. against us

  771. this would

  772. kind of be

  773. like when

  774. you're at

  775. work

  776. or at

  777. school

  778. and someone

  779. says

  780. something

  781. and you

  782. want to

  783. say

  784. something

  785. according

  786. to

  787. Jesus

  788. way

  789. but you

  790. kind of

  791. like

  792. oh

  793. I

  794. will

  795. be

  796. ridiculed

  797. maybe

  798. even

  799. ostracized

  800. if I

  801. say that

  802. so we

  803. kind of

  804. shrink back

  805. you know

  806. what I'm

  807. talking about

  808. that's what

  809. we're talking

  810. about

  811. where there's

  812. persecution

  813. or tribulation

  814. when things

  815. get hard

  816. falls away

  817. the third

  818. soil

  819. was one

  820. that came

  821. among

  822. thorns

  823. Jesus

  824. goes on

  825. to say

  826. that this

  827. is the

  828. cares

  829. of this

  830. world

  831. the

  832. deceitfulness

  833. of riches

  834. and the

  835. desire

  836. for other

  837. things

  838. that come

  839. and choke

  840. out the

  841. word

  842. and man

  843. in the

  844. west

  845. don't we

  846. feel that

  847. one

  848. that the

  849. way is

  850. hard

  851. because the

  852. cares of

  853. this world

  854. we're just

  855. thinking about

  856. other things

  857. we're thinking

  858. about what

  859. am I going to

  860. do this

  861. weekend

  862. what am I

  863. going to spend

  864. my money

  865. on am I

  866. going to have

  867. enough money

  868. to pay

  869. for the

  870. bills

  871. we get

  872. thinking

  873. about all

  874. the cares

  875. of this

  876. world

  877. that distracts

  878. us from

  879. other things

  880. or it could

  881. be the

  882. deceitfulness

  883. of riches

  884. if I just

  885. had more

  886. I would be

  887. happy

  888. more stuff

  889. stuff

  890. equals happiness

  891. now again

  892. I don't have

  893. to be rich

  894. as much

  895. as comfortable

  896. I want to

  897. be comfortable

  898. a desire

  899. for the

  900. riches

  901. that are

  902. deceitful

  903. and then he

  904. says the

  905. desire for

  906. other things

  907. that's a

  908. pretty broad

  909. category here

  910. but other

  911. things

  912. there are

  913. just things

  914. that are

  915. vying for

  916. our attention

  917. and it

  918. is really

  919. coming after

  920. us and

  921. really what

  922. Jesus is

  923. getting at

  924. is this

  925. is the

  926. things of

  927. the world

  928. we have

  929. an enemy

  930. who wants

  931. to take

  932. away the

  933. word so

  934. that you

  935. do not

  936. hear the

  937. news of

  938. Jesus

  939. Christ

  940. we're at

  941. war with

  942. Satan and

  943. the forces

  944. of darkness

  945. that is a

  946. reality

  947. now

  948. some of

  949. us

  950. are so

  951. distracted

  952. by the

  953. other

  954. things

  955. that

  956. maybe

  957. you know

  958. the enemy

  959. doesn't feel

  960. like he has

  961. to spend a lot

  962. of time on

  963. us because

  964. the other

  965. things are

  966. working better

  967. but we have

  968. an enemy

  969. that's actively

  970. working against

  971. us

  972. there's also

  973. just going to be

  974. tribulation

  975. Jesus promises

  976. it

  977. Paul says

  978. that all

  979. who desire

  980. to live a

  981. godly life

  982. in Christ

  983. Jesus

  984. will be

  985. persecuted

  986. but in the

  987. sermon on the

  988. mount

  989. Jesus said

  990. blessed are

  991. you when

  992. you're

  993. persecuted

  994. for the

  995. sake of

  996. righteousness

  997. blessed are

  998. you when

  999. others revile

  1000. you on

  1001. my account

  1002. that's a

  1003. blessed life

  1004. that's a

  1005. life of

  1006. thriving

  1007. when we're

  1008. persecuted

  1009. for Jesus

  1010. sake

  1011. the world

  1012. is against

  1013. us

  1014. our own

  1015. flesh

  1016. is against

  1017. us

  1018. our own

  1019. flesh wants

  1020. to do the

  1021. easy thing

  1022. wants to

  1023. go the

  1024. way of

  1025. the world

  1026. and that's

  1027. hard

  1028. we will

  1029. sometimes call

  1030. this the

  1031. evil trinity

  1032. satan

  1033. the world

  1034. and our

  1035. own flesh

  1036. and when

  1037. those things

  1038. are against

  1039. us

  1040. it makes

  1041. it really

  1042. hard

  1043. it just

  1044. does

  1045. so the

  1046. way is

  1047. hard

  1048. that leads

  1049. to life

  1050. but Jesus

  1051. says

  1052. it's worth

  1053. it

  1054. to follow

  1055. Jesus

  1056. is to

  1057. follow

  1058. him

  1059. down

  1060. the

  1061. path

  1062. of

  1063. resistance

  1064. and

  1065. if

  1066. you

  1067. find

  1068. it

  1069. hard

  1070. at

  1071. times

  1072. to

  1073. follow

  1074. Jesus

  1075. that's

  1076. a good

  1077. thing

  1078. it means

  1079. you're probably

  1080. going in the

  1081. right way

  1082. but if

  1083. you find

  1084. following

  1085. Jesus

  1086. pretty easy

  1087. and

  1088. comfortable

  1089. there's a

  1090. chance

  1091. you're not

  1092. following

  1093. him

  1094. because

  1095. he says

  1096. following

  1097. me

  1098. is the

  1099. hard

  1100. way

  1101. the

  1102. way

  1103. the

  1104. world

  1105. is

  1106. going

  1107. the

  1108. way

  1109. our

  1110. flesh

  1111. wants

  1112. to

  1113. go

  1114. that's

  1115. the

  1116. easy

  1117. way

  1118. but he

  1119. says

  1120. the gate

  1121. is

  1122. narrow

  1123. and the

  1124. way

  1125. is

  1126. hard

  1127. that

  1128. leads

  1129. to

  1130. life

  1131. and

  1132. few

  1133. are

  1134. those

  1135. who

  1136. find

  1137. it

  1138. so

  1139. how

  1140. will

  1141. we

  1142. respond

  1143. to

  1144. the

  1145. sermon

  1146. on

  1147. the

  1148. mount

  1149. when

  1150. Jesus

  1151. says

  1152. enter

  1153. into

  1154. the

  1155. narrow

  1156. gate

  1157. there

  1158. are

  1159. some

  1160. of

  1161. us

  1162. here

  1163. maybe

  1164. you

  1165. are

  1166. exploring

  1167. Jesus

  1168. maybe

  1169. you're

  1170. not

  1171. sure

  1172. where

  1173. you

  1174. stand

  1175. with

  1176. him

  1177. there

  1178. can

  1179. be

  1180. many

  1181. misconceptions

  1182. of how

  1183. to

  1184. properly

  1185. respond

  1186. to

  1187. Jesus

  1188. it's

  1189. not

  1190. just

  1191. a

  1192. mental

  1193. ascent

  1194. it

  1195. is

  1196. a

  1197. giving

  1198. your

  1199. life

  1200. to

  1201. follow

  1202. him

  1203. it

  1204. is

  1205. a

  1206. !

  1207. repent

  1208. and

  1209. believe

  1210. the

  1211. gospel

  1212. then

  1213. follow

  1214. me

  1215. down

  1216. this

  1217. hard

  1218. and

  1219. narrow

  1220. way

  1221. Jesus

  1222. is

  1223. saying

  1224. the

  1225. king

  1226. is

  1227. here

  1228. and

  1229. a

  1230. decision

  1231. must

  1232. be

  1233. made

  1234. in

  1235. the

  1236. passage

  1237. that

  1238. Corey

  1239. read

  1240. a few

  1241. verses

  1242. down

  1243. Jesus

  1244. also

  1245. says

  1246. there

  1247. are

  1248. many

  1249. who

  1250. will

  1251. say

  1252. to

  1253. me

  1254. that

  1255. day

  1256. Lord

  1257. Lord

  1258. who

  1259. will

  1260. not

  1261. enter

  1262. the

  1263. kingdom

  1264. of

  1265. heaven

  1266. he

  1267. says

  1268. there

  1269. are

  1270. many

  1271. who

  1272. will

  1273. say

  1274. to

  1275. me

  1276. on

  1277. that

  1278. day

  1279. Lord

  1280. Lord

  1281. did

  1282. we

  1283. not

  1284. prophesy

  1285. in

  1286. your

  1287. name

  1288. and

  1289. cast

  1290. out

  1291. demons

  1292. and

  1293. perform

  1294. mighty

  1295. works

  1296. in

  1297. your

  1298. name

  1299. and

  1300. he

  1301. said

  1302. and

  1303. I

  1304. will

  1305. say

  1306. to

  1307. them

  1308. on

  1309. that

  1310. day

  1311. depart

  1312. from

  1313. me

  1314. you

  1315. workers

  1316. of

  1317. lawlessness

  1318. for

  1319. I

  1320. never

  1321. knew

  1322. you

  1323. you

  1324. mean

  1325. there

  1326. are

  1327. some

  1328. who

  1329. are

  1330. going

  1331. to

  1332. say

  1333. I

  1334. live

  1335. my

  1336. life

  1337. for

  1338. you

  1339. Jesus

  1340. who

  1341. are

  1342. not

  1343. in

  1344. the

  1345. kingdom

  1346. of

  1347. heaven

  1348. Jesus

  1349. says

  1350. yeah

  1351. there

  1352. will

  1353. be

  1354. many

  1355. who

  1356. do

  1357. things

  1358. saying

  1359. it's

  1360. in

  1361. my

  1362. name

  1363. but

  1364. you're

  1365. not

  1366. following

  1367. me

  1368. maybe

  1369. it's

  1370. because

  1371. you're

  1372. doing

  1373. it

  1374. for

  1375. reputation

  1376. to

  1377. be

  1378. seen

  1379. by

  1380. others

  1381. which

  1382. Jesus

  1383. talked

  1384. about

  1385. in

  1386. Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  1387. chapter

  1388. 6

  1389. maybe

  1390. it's

  1391. that

  1392. you

  1393. are

  1394. doing

  1395. things

  1396. on

  1397. the

  1398. outside

  1399. but

  1400. the

  1401. inside

  1402. is

  1403. not

  1404. there

  1405. like

  1406. he

  1407. talked

  1408. about

  1409. in

  1410. chapter

  1411. 5

  1412. but

  1413. he

  1414. says

  1415. you

  1416. must

  1417. follow

  1418. me

  1419. on

  1420. this

  1421. narrow

  1422. !

  1423. path

  1424. it

  1425. is

  1426. those

  1427. who

  1428. do

  1429. the

  1430. will

  1431. of

  1432. my

  1433. father

  1434. who

  1435. is

  1436. in

  1437. heaven

  1438. it's

  1439. not

  1440. just

  1441. outward

  1442. obedience

  1443. it's

  1444. inward

  1445. heart

  1446. as

  1447. well

  1448. and

  1449. it's

  1450. about

  1451. being

  1452. on

  1453. this

  1454. path

  1455. we

  1456. realize

  1457. I'm

  1458. blew

  1459. it

  1460. I

  1461. can't

  1462. live

  1463. this

  1464. way

  1465. yes

  1466. only

  1467. Jesus

  1468. can

  1469. and

  1470. so

  1471. we

  1472. by

  1473. faith

  1474. give

  1475. our

  1476. lives

  1477. to

  1478. him

  1479. to

  1480. follow

  1481. him

  1482. we

  1483. follow

  1484. him

  1485. in

  1486. faith

  1487. and

  1488. we

  1489. repent

  1490. of

  1491. our

  1492. sin

  1493. repent

  1494. of

  1495. our

  1496. good

  1497. works

  1498. that

  1499. we

  1500. are

  1501. trying

  1502. to

  1503. do

  1504. to

  1505. earn

  1506. his

  1507. favor

  1508. but

  1509. there

  1510. are

  1511. many

  1512. of

  1513. us

  1514. in

  1515. here

  1516. who

  1517. are

  1518. also

  1519. followers

  1520. of

  1521. Christ

  1522. that

  1523. we

  1524. would

  1525. say

  1526. stay

  1527. the

  1528. path

  1529. he

  1530. is

  1531. with

  1532. us

  1533. it

  1534. can

  1535. be

  1536. hard

  1537. when

  1538. you

  1539. see

  1540. the

  1541. things

  1542. that

  1543. are

  1544. happening

  1545. in

  1546. our

  1547. culture

  1548. that

  1549. celebrate

  1550. death

  1551. instead

  1552. of

  1553. life

  1554. there

  1555. are

  1556. so

  1557. many

  1558. ways

  1559. that

  1560. the

  1561. world

  1562. is

  1563. trying

  1564. to

  1565. lure

  1566. you

  1567. into

  1568. its

  1569. thinking

  1570. to

  1571. get

  1572. you

  1573. to

  1574. follow

  1575. the

  1576. ways

  1577. of

  1578. the

  1579. world

  1580. the

  1581. enemy

  1582. is

  1583. attacking

  1584. in

  1585. ways

  1586. that

  1587. we

  1588. don't

  1589. even

  1590. see

  1591. to

  1592. try

  1593. to

  1594. discourage

  1595. and accuse

  1596. the

  1597. brethren

  1598. to deceive

  1599. us

  1600. don't

  1601. give

  1602. in to

  1603. the

  1604. flesh

  1605. believe

  1606. the

  1607. gospel

  1608. that

  1609. Jesus

  1610. lived

  1611. the

  1612. life

  1613. that

  1614. you

  1615. couldn't

  1616. live

  1617. and

  1618. he

  1619. died

  1620. the

  1621. death

  1622. that

  1623. you

  1624. deserve

  1625. to

  1626. die

  1627. so

  1628. that

  1629. through

  1630. faith

  1631. in

  1632. him

  1633. we

  1634. can

  1635. have

  1636. life

  1637. the

  1638. end

  1639. of

  1640. the

  1641. hard

  1642. way

  1643. entering

  1644. through

  1645. the

  1646. narrow

  1647. gate

  1648. leads

  1649. to

  1650. life

  1651. so

  1652. live

  1653. that

  1654. life

  1655. of

  1656. repentance

  1657. whenever

  1658. I

  1659. hear

  1660. about

  1661. kind

  1662. of a

  1663. fork

  1664. in

  1665. the

  1666. road

  1667. or

  1668. cross

  1669. roads

  1670. or

  1671. you

  1672. got

  1673. to

  1674. pick

  1675. the

  1676. path

  1677. to

  1678. choose

  1679. Jim

  1680. Elliott

  1681. if you

  1682. ever

  1683. heard

  1684. that

  1685. name

  1686. was

  1687. a

  1688. missionary

  1689. from

  1690. America

  1691. went to

  1692. the

  1693. Akka

  1694. Indians

  1695. in

  1696. South

  1697. America

  1698. and

  1699. one

  1700. of

  1701. my

  1702. favorite

  1703. quotes

  1704. he

  1705. had

  1706. a

  1707. book

  1708. kind

  1709. of

  1710. his

  1711. biography

  1712. written

  1713. by

  1714. his

  1715. wife

  1716. called

  1717. The

  1718. Shadow

  1719. of

  1720. the

  1721. Almighty

  1722. this

  1723. quote

  1724. stuck

  1725. with

  1726. me

  1727. where

  1728. he

  1729. says

  1730. father

  1731. make

  1732. of

  1733. me

  1734. a

  1735. crisis

  1736. man

  1737. bring

  1738. those

  1739. I

  1740. contact

  1741. to

  1742. a

  1743. decision

  1744. let

  1745. me

  1746. not

  1747. be

  1748. a

  1749. mile

  1750. post

  1751. on

  1752. a

  1753. single

  1754. road

  1755. but

  1756. make

  1757. me

  1758. a

  1759. fork

  1760. that

  1761. men

  1762. must

  1763. turn

  1764. one

  1765. way

  1766. or

  1767. another

  1768. on

  1769. facing

  1770. Christ

  1771. in

  1772. me

  1773. in

  1774. other

  1775. words

  1776. for those

  1777. of you

  1778. who are

  1779. following

  1780. Jesus

  1781. let us

  1782. live a

  1783. life

  1784. that

  1785. is

  1786. so

  1787. bearing

  1788. the

  1789. image

  1790. the

  1791. image

  1792. of

  1793. Jesus

  1794. that

  1795. is

  1796. so

  1797. we're

  1798. the

  1799. hands

  1800. and

  1801. feet

  1802. of

  1803. Jesus

  1804. that

  1805. we

  1806. are

  1807. following

  1808. him

  1809. in

  1810. such

  1811. a

  1812. way

  1813. that

  1814. people

  1815. when

  1816. they

  1817. come

  1818. in

  1819. contact

  1820. with

  1821. us

  1822. they've

  1823. got

  1824. to

  1825. make

  1826. a

  1827. decision

  1828. am

  1829. I

  1830. going

  1831. to

  1832. follow

  1833. that

  1834. way

  1835. of

  1836. Jesus

  1837. or

  1838. turn

  1839. the

  1840. other

  1841. way

  1842. let

  1843. our

  1844. lives

  1845. be

  1846. such

  1847. that

  1848. people

  1849. even

  1850. face

  1851. a

  1852. little

  1853. bit

  1854. of

  1855. conviction

  1856. followers

  1857. let's

  1858. pray

  1859. father

  1860. we

  1861. thank

  1862. you

  1863. so

  1864. much

  1865. that

  1866. Jesus

  1867. gave

  1868. us

  1869. these

  1870. words

  1871. that

  1872. he

  1873. gave

  1874. us

  1875. really

  1876. a

  1877. hard

  1878. saying

  1879. after

  1880. such

  1881. an

  1882. incredible

  1883. sermon

  1884. showing

  1885. what

  1886. life

  1887. in the

  1888. kingdom

  1889. is

  1890. like

  1891. life

  1892. of

  1893. thriving

  1894. in a

  1895. way

  1896. that

  1897. lives

  1898. for

  1899. your

  1900. glory

  1901. and

  1902. honors

  1903. you

  1904. both

  1905. from

  1906. the

  1907. outside

  1908. and

  1909. the

  1910. inside

  1911. how

  1912. to

  1913. live

  1914. from

  1915. the

  1916. heart

  1917. how

  1918. to

  1919. pray

  1920. there

  1921. are

  1922. so

  1923. many

  1924. incredible

  1925. things

  1926. that

  1927. Jesus

  1928. gave

  1929. us

  1930. thank

  1931. you

  1932. that

  1933. he

  1934. gave

  1935. us

  1936. this

  1937. invitation

  1938. to

  1939. enter

  1940. the

  1941. narrow

  1942. gate

  1943. Lord

  1944. Jesus

  1945. thank

  1946. you

  1947. for

  1948. giving

  1949. us

  1950. this

  1951. way

  1952. to

  1953. follow

  1954. you

  1955. and

  1956. Lord

  1957. what

  1958. you

  1959. call

  1960. us

  1961. to

  1962. you

  1963. give

  1964. us

  1965. the

  1966. strength

  1967. to

  1968. obey

  1969. you

  1970. gave

  1971. us

  1972. your

  1973. spirit

  1974. so

  1975. that

  1976. we

  1977. could

  1978. follow

  1979. you

  1980. on

  1981. this

  1982. path

  1983. may

  1984. we

  1985. never

  1986. think

  1987. for

  1988. a

  1989. moment

  1990. that

  1991. we

  1992. can

  1993. earn

  1994. our

  1995. way

  1996. that

  1997. we

  1998. can

  1999. be

  2000. good

  2001. enough

  2002. help

  2003. us

  2004. to

  2005. fall

  2006. into

  2007. your

  2008. arms

  2009. and

  2010. trust

  2011. you

  2012. again

  2013. thank

  2014. you

  2015. for

  2016. the

  2017. spirit

  2018. that

  2019. empowers

  2020. us

  2021. to

  2022. live

  2023. this

  2024. life

  2025. that

  2026. you've

  2027. called

  2028. us

  2029. to

  2030. may

  2031. we

  2032. live

  2033. in

  2034. full

  2035. obedience

  2036. day

  2037. by

  2038. day

  2039. we

  2040. pray

  2041. this

  2042. in

  2043. the

  2044. precious

  2045. name

  2046. of

  2047. Jesus

  2048. amen
