  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the

  11. types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Let's just bow our heads in prayer. Father, help us to have a great confidence in your Word.

  13. A confidence, Father, not only in our minds, and we would like to have that, Father, but also in our

  14. heart, in the very center of who we are. We invite and give you an unqualified permission and invitation

  15. that your Word, this Word, would enter into our hearts in a very deep way, and that your Word would

  16. form us, that you would change us by your Word. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son,

  17. and our Savior. Amen. Please be seated.

  18. I wasn't taking a selfie, by the way. I'm turning on my phone to turn on the stopwatch so I don't

  19. preach for three hours. No, I wouldn't preach that long. You'd all be left the room by then.

  20. You know, one of the things I love about the Bible, which is so, especially the Gospels,

  21. is they have all of these really human elements in them, just exactly the way we human beings act.

  22. It's actually really funny. Not in every commentary, but some commentaries, the human bits of the story,

  23. they find problematic, but they're not really problems. There's constantly things in the Gospels

  24. that just show these are exactly how human beings act. It helps us to understand that while this is a

  25. story in time and place, and rooted in time and place, it's a story for every time and every place,

  26. because ultimately God is the author. But these human authors who were first used to write this,

  27. they have all these human elements. And we can see this right off the bat in one of the things

  28. which causes some people to be a little bit puzzled. In fact, it's the human parts that people

  29. often try to mock in the story. So let's look at it. What we're looking at today is sort of the second

  30. part of the early morning events of Easter Sunday, and it's John chapter 12, sorry, John chapter 20,

John 12 chapter mention John 20 chapter mention

  31. and we're beginning at the 11th verse. John chapter 20, and we're going to begin at the 11th verse.

    John 20 chapter mention

  32. And just a context, once again, this is written by John, who's the beloved disciple. He was an eyewitness

  33. for almost everything in Jesus's ministry for three years, and he's writing this biography of Jesus

  34. when many eyewitnesses were alive to comment on it. And what's just happened, if you look at the four

  35. different ancient biographies together, you'll see that a group of women went to the tomb very, very,

  36. very, very early, while it's still dark, wondering how the stone, how they're going to get the stone

  37. removed so that they can deal with Jesus's body. You know, even this is a very, very human little

  38. bit of a gesture, and I hope, don't jump on me. I hope this, you don't consider this to be sexist.

  39. But let me tell you, if you came to my house, and we were going to be sitting, and I wanted to try to

  40. set a very nice table for you, I wouldn't do as good a job as my wife. Maybe if she was away, I would

  41. sort of set the table, but she'd come, and she'd want to just make it, like, way better. And I'm

  42. betting that the reason so many women went on this Easter morning to go to the tomb is, yeah, these two

  43. guys went, and they wrapped the body, and I'm sure they're saying to themselves, I'm sure they didn't

  44. leave any flowers, there's probably spice all over the ground, they didn't tidy things up, and we're

  45. going to go and make it look really good, because they want to honor the corpse of Jesus. Anyway, they go,

  46. and they discover the soldier's gone, the stone has been blown away, and the grave is empty, and they

  47. all go running different things, and there's different accounts. And if you go back and you

  48. read all of the different accounts, there's nothing in any accounts that contradict each other, but

  49. there's different ways that you could put a chronology to it. But out of all of those events,

  50. eventually Mary Magdalene runs to Peter and John, tells them that the grave, that somebody's stolen

  51. the body of Jesus. And so Peter and John go taking off to go to the tomb, and Mary follows behind,

  52. maybe just a foot or so behind, or she walks, or whatever, we're not sure. And what we see here

  53. right now in the story is taking it up from that moment. Peter and John have gone, and look at this,

  54. verse 11, and this is just so human, isn't it? But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb,

  55. and she weeps because she loved Jesus, and he's dead. She weeps because of the oppression and the

  56. injustice of the occupying Roman forces that crucified Jesus and humiliated him through crucifixion.

  57. She weeps because the religious leaders of her own people, rather than standing up for Jesus,

  58. had a role in capturing him, and they wanted him dead. And now she's weeping because, dang it all,

  59. they can't even look after the body. They've stolen the body, and she weeps. And then she does this

  60. thing, which, as I said, sometimes commentators find very puzzling, but you shouldn't be puzzled.

  61. Look what she does next. Verse 11 still, but Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept,

  62. she stooped to look into the tomb. And lots of people say, that doesn't make any sense. Like,

  63. why'd you go and look in the tomb again? Well, let me tell you. Before we lost our building,

  64. and before the condos on the other side of our building were there, there was a place where

  65. Christian brothers lived. And the Christian brothers allowed us to have four free parking spots,

  66. all 24-7 in their parking lot. And on Sunday mornings, we could fill their parking lot.

  67. And they did it all for free. And every Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving, Barbara Allen would

  68. remind me that we should send a thank you. And so I went and I bought, I don't know, eight bottles of

  69. wine or something like that. And I went and gave them to the brothers as just a token of our appreciation

  70. for them letting us have these parking spots. Anyway, one of my sons had borrowed the van one day,

  71. and I get a call. Dad, the van's stolen.

  72. I probably said all the stupid, dumb things that Dad say in a situation like that. Like,

  73. how could it be stolen? Are you sure it's stolen? Like, completely stupid things.

  74. Because I didn't, you know, it's not as if we have vehicles stolen all the time. And I just say,

  75. oh, look, there you go. 53rd time this year. So anyway, I come down, and what's the very first

  76. thing I do? I go to see if the van's still there, if the van's gone. As if my 19-year-old

  77. son isn't capable of remembering where he parked and recognizing whether a van is still there,

  78. or a 20-year-old son, however he old. It was the first thing I did. And when I was in graduate

  79. school the first time, I had been gifted a really, really expensive racing bicycle,

  80. and a road bike. And I'd gone to the library one day, and when I came out of the library,

  81. the bike was stolen. And this was really crushing, because I didn't have insurance.

  82. I could never afford a bike like that. I needed my bike to get around. And I must have gone five

  83. different times back to that spot. Every time. I don't know, I mean, what, the bike's just going

  84. to reappear? I don't know. It's just a very human thing. She's crying, and she looks in the tomb.

  85. Now, this next bit in the story is also something that gets people's knickers in a twist.

  86. Like, look what happens next, verse 12. She looks in, and she saw two angels in white,

  87. sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. Now, this gets some

  88. people all in a bit of a frazzle, and there's ways that they mock it. And it's funny, the mocking

  89. and the puzzling that they have is over the simplest bit of the story, and what they miss

  90. is the momentous thing about the story. You know, so very simply, they say, ah, you know,

  91. how come Peter and John looked in there, and they didn't see angels? And now Mary looks in there,

  92. and she's, well, no, no, like, that's a stupid, that's not a very wise type of objection.

  93. I almost said a word, you know, we tell our kids not to say. And, um, stupid, that's the word,

  94. not something really bad. Anyway, and, and, but the, I mean, the issue is, if anybody,

  95. I mean, you know, I mean, there's obviously a whole pile of people who don't believe angels

  96. exist, and we set those aside for a moment, but angels, by their very nature, are not creatures

  97. that we can just see by our own power. An angel has to will to be seen, otherwise you'll never see it.

  98. The angels might or might not have appeared there when Peter and John were there, but even if they

  99. were, they didn't will to be seen, but they willed to be seen by Mary when Mary looked her head in

  100. there. That's a very simple way to deal with the story. It's quite remarkable, isn't it? In fact,

  101. just as an aside, the Bible tells us that there are many angels here, that when we worship on a

  102. Sunday morning, we worship with angels. We can't hear their voices, but we worship with angels.

  103. We worship not by ourselves, but also with angels in, in the company of heaven. It's really a glorious

  104. thought to think that, you know, but they, they remain unseen. But anyway, what's, but what's the big

  105. thing which is missed? And the big thing which is missed is how did she know that one was sitting

  106. where Jesus's head used to be, and the other one was sitting where his feet used to be? Well, if you

  107. go back and you read the part just before this, verses six and seven, you'll see, and this is the

  108. momentous thing, it's quite astounding, is that the grave cloths were still there, but Jesus's body

  109. was missing. So why was this, why is this a really remarkable thing? Well, it's remarkable for a

  110. variety of reasons. Let's say Frank and I decided that one day we're going to rob an ATM. In fact,

  111. we're going to rob several ATMs. Now, I don't know, maybe some of you, if I pick one of you to rob an

  112. ATM with, you know how to stick a card in, like in a science fiction, you know, spy thing. You type some

  113. things in, and all of a sudden it starts spitting out all of the $20 and $1,500 bills inside. But most of us

  114. aren't like that. Probably the only way to steal it would be to steal a backhoe,

  115. take that whole stupid ATM machine out of the bank, take it away, and then we could take,

  116. in our leisure, we could take chisels or whatever, crowbars, and finally open that thing up and get

  117. all the money out of it. That's how we would do it. Only the dumbest thief in the world would try to

  118. take the crowbar and the chisels and stand there while everybody could see them trying to break into

  119. the ATM machine. And even if you found a thief so stupid that he would stand by the ATM machine,

  120. hammering away at it, trying to break it apart so he could steal the money, even if he was that stupid,

  121. he wouldn't be so stupid that after he'd taken the money, he'd very quickly try to put the whole

  122. machine back together again. Like that just wouldn't happen. So it was very common in the ancient world

  123. for wealthy people when they had been, the corpses of wealthy people, that people would try to steal

  124. their bodies, at least in this time of Israel. And the reason they would try to steal their bodies

  125. isn't that they were gruesome, although maybe some of them were gruesome. It's because of two things of

  126. great value. The first thing of just a moderate value is that they have the body and they roll the body

  127. in a big piece of cloth and intermingled with rolling it up are lots of spices. And in the case of rich

  128. people, in the case of Jesus, because Joseph of Arimathea was wealthy, as was Nicodemus, and they're the two men

  129. who did this, 75 pounds of spices. And like in today's dollars, that would be worth like, I mean,

  130. that would be worth 50, 60 thousand dollars of spices, plus the cloth. So when they would steal a

  131. body, they weren't stealing the body, they didn't care about the body, the body would just be thrown

  132. away somewhere. They'd take the whole body and leave so that they could disentangle the linen, the cloth,

  133. and they could take out the spices and resell it, which I know is unbelievably gross. But that's a

  134. separate matter. That's what they did. Obviously, if they have no conscience to disrespect the grave,

  135. they don't have any conscience about selling spices that have been next to a decomposing body.

  136. That's a whole other thing, just a gross aspect of the story. So the point of it is, though,

  137. that what you see there and what you see here is that Mary's able to see the grave clothes.

  138. And so she can see that one angel is sitting where the headpiece was, and the other angel is sitting

  139. where the feet would be. Because the way it's described in the original language, it's if all

  140. of a sudden you have this body enwrapped with spices and cloth, and then the body vanishes from it.

  141. The body vanishes, leaving behind the cloth and the spices.

  142. It's one of the many powerful pieces of evidence that Jesus not only did die, which isn't really

  143. a dispute, but that he really did rise from the dead. And also tells us a little bit about the nature

  144. of the resurrection, that his body could just be gone, that no longer had to stay there.

  145. Now, here I've sort of taken this way, but I want you to notice that part of the story,

  146. which is really important. The thing about seeing two angels, that's a simple thing.

  147. Nobody should be particularly bothered about that. But then most of us would say,

  148. well, that's cool, like angels, like what happened? Like what did you talk about?

  149. One of the most common things that I have with my wife, I'm telling her about some things

  150. that went on, I want to let her know something that I learned that day, and I tell her the conversation,

  151. then she'll ask me a couple of very good questions. And I'll always tell her, well,

  152. the conversation just moved in a different direction. And that's sort of what happens here.

  153. We'd like to know about the angels, but the conversation, well, look what happens. It's verse 13.

  154. So the angels are there, and before Mary can say anything, they say to her first, you know, woman,

  155. and it said with respect, why are you weeping? She said to them, they have taken away my Lord,

  156. and I do not know where they have laid him.

  157. And she doesn't end up talking about anything about the angels or anything like that.

  158. She just tells them, you know, I'm looking for Jesus's corpse.

  159. You know, one of the other powerful evidences for the truth of the resurrection

  160. is that in none of the accounts, none of the ancient biographies, do Christians look good.

  161. They all look every single, like, as you continue to listen to this story,

  162. Mary doesn't believe that Jesus is risen from the dead.

  163. Jesus died. Dead people stayed dead.

  164. And he is dead. He didn't rise from the dead.

  165. And Peter doesn't, you know, John, like the women, all the disciples,

  166. all the way through in all of the accounts until Jesus finally appears as resurrected.

  167. Even the empty tomb does not convince Mary that Jesus rose from the dead.

  168. She just thinks the body's been taken.

  169. She doesn't stop to think about it for that.

  170. You know, maybe later on she's saying, of course, that's so stupid.

  171. Of course he had to have risen from the dead because the way the grave cloths,

  172. and of course they must have been angels,

  173. and all these things she would have thought about later.

  174. But in the moment, they're just continuing selling the story that Jesus is dead,

  175. and she's looking for his body.

  176. Now the next bit, which puzzles people, I can't be dogmatic,

  177. but I think there's a very plausible way and a very human way to understand what happens next.

  178. I'll show you what the problem is.

  179. Look at verse 14.

  180. So she's just said to the angels,

  181. they've taken, you know, I don't know where they've laid Jesus.

  182. Verse 14,

  183. And having said this,

  184. she turned around and saw Jesus standing,

  185. but she did not know that it was Jesus.

  186. Now the question is, like, why did she turn around all of a sudden?

  187. And I think the reason is like this.

  188. She's looking at the angels,

  189. and it's clear from the text

  190. that Jesus doesn't sort of walk behind her, sneaking up on her.

  191. Jesus just appears behind her.

  192. And why did she turn around?

  193. Could have been that human sense of other people present.

  194. It could have been that human sense that you sometimes have that somebody's looking at you.

  195. I mean, that's a puzzling thing in and of itself.

  196. Why does it sometimes we feel somebody looking at us?

  197. But I think more likely what happened is,

  198. we see it, Mary saw a change in the angels.

  199. Maybe they all of a sudden stood and looked behind her.

  200. Maybe all of a sudden they smiled in a different way, looking behind her.

  201. Maybe there was a bowing of their head while they looked behind her.

  202. But she sees the angels looking behind her.

  203. I mean, this makes complete and utter sense.

  204. This is the Lord of the angels who's now standing behind Mary.

  205. And so Mary turns around.

  206. And it's caused lots of people problems over the years

  207. as to why she didn't recognize him.

  208. Some of the explanations haven't been,

  209. especially of older commentaries,

  210. weren't very complimentary of women.

  211. They would say, well, you know,

  212. we know women have this hysterical type of nature,

  213. which, you know, is all just, you know, garbage.

  214. And some will say, you know,

  215. well, she was so crying she couldn't see.

  216. And others are saying, well, you know,

  217. maybe it's a bit dark still.

  218. And others are saying that there's a sun behind them.

  219. But it doesn't, in fact,

  220. the story makes it even more complicated than that.

  221. Look what happens in verse, you know,

  222. in verse 14, she doesn't recognize Jesus.

  223. Verse 15, Jesus said to her,

  224. woman, why are you weeping?

  225. Whom are you seeking?

  226. You might be able to explain away Mary's,

  227. you know, having some tears in her eyes

  228. or the sun streaming behind Jesus,

  229. but she'd recognize his voice.

  230. Like, good grief, I'd recognize Louise's voice.

  231. Like, none of those things explain

  232. why she doesn't understand him when she speaks.

  233. You're right, and since the story makes it even worse.

  234. And then she does something here,

  235. look at this, that once again is very, very human.

  236. Like, Jesus said to her, woman,

  237. why are you weeping?

  238. Whom are you seeking?

  239. And supposing him to be the gardener,

  240. that's so funny.

  241. Remember I said, yeah, this story keeps selling

  242. that Mary and the early Christians

  243. don't believe Jesus had risen from the dead.

  244. She says to him, sir, if you have carried him away,

  245. tell me where you have laid him,

  246. and I will take him away.

  247. And then Jesus said to her, Mary.

  248. She turned and said to him in Aramaic,

  249. Rabboni, which means teacher.

  250. Here's the very human thing.

  251. Just imagine for a moment you're going to a reception.

  252. And at the reception, you're going to be meeting somebody.

  253. You know there's going to be a couple of people that you know.

  254. And so I come into the reception,

  255. and I take my glass of wine,

  256. but I'm looking for Andrew.

  257. I want to hang out with Andrew and Victor.

  258. So I take it from the waiter or the waitress,

  259. and as I'm taking it, I'm looking around

  260. because I'd like to see Andrew and Victor

  261. and have a talk with them.

  262. And so I turn away from the person.

  263. And so Mary, she just thinks it's the gardener.

  264. She's not going to spend all her time talking to the gardener.

  265. She's looking around like, where's Jesus?

  266. Where's the body of Jesus?

  267. And then Jesus says Mary's name,

  268. and Mary now turns right back and looks.

  269. And as we see, look here in verse 17,

  270. what she obviously does is she doesn't just look at Jesus.

  271. She throws herself at Jesus and hugs him, grabs him.

  272. One of the reasons that, once again,

  273. we know that this is a physical resurrection.

  274. It's not just a spiritual thing.

  275. It's not an hallucination.

  276. It's a physical thing.

  277. And just before we go any further,

  278. you know, if you go back and you read,

  279. I think it's John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  280. Jesus has this very beautiful piece

  281. about comparing himself to, you know,

  282. he says, I am the good shepherd.

  283. And one of the things he says

  284. is that the good shepherd knows his sheep by name.

  285. See, this is one of the things that's so beautiful

  286. about the Christian faith.

  287. He doesn't just say, I love middle-aged, white people

  288. with graduate educations who live in postmodern countries

  289. like Canada.

  290. He says, I love George.

  291. You know, he doesn't just say, you know, I love engineers.

  292. No, he loves Uzo and he loves Tommy, right?

  293. He doesn't just say, I love lawyers.

  294. He says, no, I love Victor and I love Owen.

  295. And on and on.

  296. And so what happens is what we're seeing here

  297. is we're learning something about what the resurrected body is like.

  298. On one hand, in a resurrected body,

  299. if you want to go through a barrier,

  300. you just go through a barrier.

  301. You're going to see that if you go and read the rest of the Gospels.

  302. And you're learning in a resurrected body

  303. that it's a body, you can hug it.

  304. And later on, you're going to see that he can eat fish

  305. and there's still the wounds on his side.

  306. But the other thing about the resurrected body

  307. is that it's still very clearly the person,

  308. but there's also something different about the person.

  309. But more importantly, that we now see that the resurrected body

  310. is a little bit like an angel,

  311. not in terms of being non-physical or invisible,

  312. but that Jesus has to will to be recognized,

  313. just like the angels have to will to be recognized.

  314. It's so beautiful that the angels there and Jesus are in the same story,

  315. showing the same principle.

  316. Angels will that Mary can see them.

  317. Jesus now wills that Mary can see him,

  318. and he does it by calling her by name.

  319. He does it by calling her by name.

  320. Look at verse 17.

  321. Jesus said to her,

  322. Do not cling to me.

  323. One of the unfortunate things is the old King James Version

  324. translates it as touch,

  325. which isn't accurate in the Greek,

  326. and it's unfortunate,

  327. because it causes problems to figure out

  328. why he's able to be touched later.

  329. But it's not that Mary is just giving him

  330. the biggest hug in the world.

  331. I mean, and this is so believable, right?

  332. Because all the way through this,

  333. you see how much she loved him.

  334. She was one of the people there

  335. watching him be crucified.

  336. She's one of the people who watched

  337. Nicodemus and Josephus,

  338. not Josephus,

  339. Joseph of Arimathea,

  340. take the body of Jesus to the cave,

  341. and she saw where the cave was.

  342. She's one of the women going to prepare

  343. the body of Jesus even better

  344. on the third day.

  345. She's the one who goes and tells the apostle.

  346. She's the one who goes back to the tomb.

  347. She's the one who's weeping inconsolably.

  348. She loves him,

  349. and so she hugs him.

  350. And then Jesus here,

  351. it's so beautiful,

  352. verse 17,

  353. Jesus said to her,

  354. Do not cling to me,

  355. for I have not yet ascended to the Father.

  356. But go to my brothers.

  357. So wonderful.

  358. He doesn't say,

  359. Go to those dirty rats

  360. who wouldn't stand by me.

  361. He doesn't say,

  362. Go to those dunces

  363. who didn't understand anything I taught them.

  364. He doesn't say anything like that.

  365. He says,

  366. Go to my brothers.

  367. Go to my brothers

  368. and say to them,

  369. I am ascending to my Father.

  370. And he doesn't say,

  371. I'm not even sure if God

  372. would have anything to do with you

  373. because you've been doing such a terrible job.

  374. No, no.

  375. He says,

  376. I am ascending to my Father

  377. and your Father

  378. to my God

  379. and your God.

  380. And Mary Magdalene went

  381. and announced to the disciples

  382. in the original language,

  383. I have seen the Lord

  384. is emphatic.

  385. And that he had said these things to her.

  386. Now,

  387. I'm a sucker for action films.

  388. And just a bit of a side,

  389. I often like Gerard Butler

  390. in roles.

  391. If I see that he's in a movie,

  392. I'm more likely to want to watch it on Netflix.

  393. And there's a thing

  394. that just came on Netflix

  395. a little while ago.

  396. I think it's called Geostorm.

  397. And it's one of the things

  398. I love about this.

  399. I love old disaster films like this

  400. because the beginning of the movie,

  401. I'm not going to give away any spoilers.

  402. Beginning of the movie,

  403. it all begins very solemn

  404. because of climate change

  405. and pollution.

  406. The whole earth

  407. was completely and utterly

  408. almost uninhabitable

  409. in the year 2019.

  410. 2019,

  411. five years ago.

  412. Anyway,

  413. I won't go into a political thing

  414. right here.

  415. And then, of course,

  416. they designed this thing

  417. that sort of saves the planet.

  418. And then several years later,

  419. the whole thing

  420. is starting to fall apart.

  421. And there's only one thing

  422. on the whole planet,

  423. only one person

  424. on the whole planet

  425. who can rescue humankind,

  426. and that's Gerard Butler.

  427. And he has to go back up

  428. into space and fix it.

  429. And before he goes,

  430. he has a 13-year-old daughter.

  431. And his 13-year-old daughter

  432. doesn't want him to go

  433. because she thinks

  434. he's going to die.

  435. And he says to her,

  436. the classic action hero thing,

  437. don't worry,

  438. I'm not going to die.

  439. I'm going to come back.

  440. But then he says,

  441. in classic North American fashion,

  442. with great affection

  443. and a wonderful Scottish accent,

  444. he touches her

  445. on her chest

  446. and says,

  447. but even if I die,

  448. I'm always with you.

  449. I'm always with you

  450. right here in your heart.

  451. Now it's supposed to be

  452. a moving thing,

  453. and it is a moving thing.

  454. But here's a couple

  455. of things about it.

  456. First thing is,

  457. you see this all the time.

  458. You know,

  459. if you've ever come

  460. to a funeral

  461. that I get to preside at,

  462. if people want to say eulogies

  463. and stuff,

  464. I allow them to do that.

  465. And I sort of sense

  466. at the beginning

  467. of the service,

  468. I do that.

  469. And then the rest

  470. of the service happens

  471. and I'll preach

  472. a short sermon.

  473. But I've heard many,

  474. many times

  475. where one of the people

  476. doing the eulogy

  477. will look at the people

  478. who are grieved

  479. and said,

  480. don't worry,

  481. they're looking down

  482. at you right now,

  483. they love you,

  484. they're with you,

  485. they're watching over you.

  486. I've heard it said

  487. many, many times.

  488. So on one hand,

  489. this is a very good thing.

  490. It shows that in North America

  491. and I think around the world,

  492. there is a very,

  493. very, very, very strong

  494. intuition in people

  495. that life is stronger

  496. than death

  497. and that death

  498. is not final

  499. and that there is a way

  500. to survive death

  501. and continue to live.

  502. There's a very strong

  503. intuition that that's the case

  504. and there's a very strong

  505. longing that that

  506. would be the case

  507. and for secular Canadians

  508. it's expressed in that thing

  509. about don't worry,

  510. I'm always going to be with you,

  511. I'll be looking over you

  512. and all of those types of things.

  513. It's very, very,

  514. it shows this very deep longing

  515. and this very deep intuition

  516. and as Christians

  517. we would want to say

  518. you should follow those longings

  519. and those intuition.

  520. You should think about it

  521. more deeply

  522. and the reason you need

  523. to think about it

  524. more deeply

  525. is that there's a couple

  526. of problems.

  527. There's three,

  528. I'll tell you two right now.

  529. The first one is this,

  530. there's no evidence

  531. for what you've just said.

  532. There's absolutely no evidence

  533. that that's true.

  534. In fact,

  535. I would also say

  536. to my Hindu

  537. and Buddhist friends

  538. there's no evidence

  539. in reincarnation.

  540. Like there's zero evidence

  541. for it.

  542. To our Muslim friends,

  543. I'd say there's

  544. zero evidence

  545. that the Muslim description

  546. of life after death

  547. is true.

  548. There's no evidence for it.

  549. Like zero evidence for it.

  550. And the second thing

  551. about it is

  552. that if you think about it

  553. for a second,

  554. it's what

  555. that intuition

  556. or that what's said

  557. in funerals

  558. is actually the plot

  559. of a horror movie.

  560. You go,

  561. what?

  562. How could that be?

  563. Just think about it

  564. for a second.

  565. Would you like

  566. to be in a world

  567. where all of a sudden

  568. dead people

  569. watch you all the time?

  570. Like all the time?

  571. When you go to the bathroom?

  572. Like when you're intimate

  573. with your spouse?

  574. Like they're always there

  575. watching you?

  576. Don't you see,

  577. that's actually the plot

  578. of a horror movie.

  579. It's not actually something

  580. that is really good.

  581. So if you could put up

  582. the first point, Claire,

  583. that would be very handy.

  584. And that is this.

  585. And this is why

  586. these stories are so important.

  587. There is only one

  588. who has vindicated

  589. his authority.

  590. Sorry,

  591. the only one

  592. who has vindicated

  593. his authority

  594. to talk about life

  595. and death

  596. is Jesus.

  597. Why?

  598. Because he is the only one

  599. who has tasted

  600. all there is to taste

  601. of death

  602. and then been resurrected.

  603. He's the only one.

  604. And in fact,

  605. you know,

  606. this is so powerful

  607. is that when you

  608. see these stories

  609. and see that Jesus

  610. has tasted

  611. all there is

  612. to taste of death

  613. and that he's resurrected

  614. on the third day,

  615. he's defeated death,

  616. he's on the other side

  617. of death,

  618. he's still alive,

  619. only Christianity

  620. explains

  621. and grounds

  622. our intuitions

  623. and our longings

  624. around surviving death.

  625. Only Jesus

  626. can talk about it.

  627. Now,

  628. there's another problem

  629. with the,

  630. I said there were three,

  631. there's probably,

  632. there's a lot more

  633. than three,

  634. but I was just going

  635. to share three this morning

  636. about the Canadian view

  637. on death

  638. and life after death.

  639. And that's,

  640. the other problem

  641. is this,

  642. that it actually

  643. unconsciously reveals

  644. that we believe

  645. that we're the center

  646. of the universe.

  647. It unconsciously reveals

  648. that human beings

  649. believe that they're

  650. the center of the universe.

  651. Well,

  652. why do I say that?

  653. Imagine on a day,

  654. by coincidence,

  655. a man and a woman

  656. who used to be married

  657. are divorced

  658. and by coincidence

  659. they,

  660. they've been divorced

  661. for quite a while

  662. and they,

  663. by the way,

  664. we all know people like this,

  665. they hated each other's guts.

  666. Let's be frank.

  667. A man and a woman

  668. who'd been married

  669. for many years,

  670. they hated each other.

  671. They loathed each other.

  672. Probably if you had

  673. talked to them

  674. and if you said that,

  675. you know,

  676. you know,

  677. my,

  678. your,

  679. your ex-husband Joe

  680. is on his deathbed

  681. and she says,

  682. I hope he has a long

  683. and painful lingering illness

  684. and then he rots in hell.

  685. We've all met people

  686. who would say that

  687. about their,

  688. their ex-spouse.

  689. And then,

  690. by coincidence,

  691. their funerals

  692. are opposite ends

  693. of the city

  694. in the same day.

  695. And somebody for Bob

  696. gets up and says eulogy

  697. and says,

  698. oh,

  699. you people who miss Bob,

  700. he's up there

  701. looking down on you.

  702. And somebody who goes

  703. to Sue's funeral

  704. says,

  705. don't worry about Sue,

  706. she's up there

  707. looking down at you.

  708. And if people put

  709. two and two together,

  710. they say,

  711. what,

  712. Bob and Sue

  713. are going to have

  714. to live together

  715. after life,

  716. after death?

  717. They're going to hate that.

  718. That's a description

  719. of hell,

  720. not heaven

  721. to each of them,

  722. that they're going to

  723. have to spend time

  724. with each other.

  725. But the other thing is,

  726. no, no,

  727. see,

  728. here's what people mean

  729. when they say this.

  730. What they really mean is,

  731. listen,

  732. all those other

  733. terrible people,

  734. they just die.

  735. But I'm always

  736. going to be with you.

  737. My ex-wife,

  738. my ex-husband,

  739. no, no, no, no, no, no.

  740. They're just,

  741. they're going to be in hell.

  742. I'll always be with you.

  743. Like,

  744. actually,

  745. it unconsciously reveals

  746. our self-centeredness.

  747. If you could put up

  748. the next point,

  749. that would be very helpful.

  750. There is no way

  751. to be with others

  752. in the new heaven

  753. and earth

  754. without always being

  755. in the full presence

  756. of the triune God.

  757. There is no way

  758. to be with others

  759. in the new heaven

  760. and the earth

  761. without always being

  762. in the full presence

  763. of the triune God.

  764. See,

  765. that's the thing

  766. which is seen

  767. in this text,

  768. which is so beautiful.

  769. You know,

  770. Jesus says,

  771. tell my brothers

  772. that I'm ascending.

  773. And,

  774. and the implication there,

  775. by the way,

  776. with all of Jesus'

  777. teaching,

  778. you read the Gospels,

  779. you realize that

  780. one of the things

  781. which is so profound

  782. is that Jesus'

  783. death on the cross

  784. accomplishes something

  785. that when we put our faith

  786. and trust in Him,

  787. that in a sense,

  788. His death becomes ours,

  789. His resurrection

  790. becomes ours.

  791. My hope

  792. in having a new body

  793. and being resurrected

  794. in the new heaven

  795. and the new earth

  796. isn't based on anything

  797. I can do,

  798. anything I can accomplish.

  799. It's all done by Christ.

  800. He finishes everything.

  801. He accomplishes everything.

  802. And He also gets around

  803. this issue of our pride

  804. because somebody might say,

  805. okay, George,

  806. so in the new heaven

  807. and the new earth,

  808. you can't just sort of

  809. go up into the new heaven

  810. and the new earth

  811. and,

  812. or you can't survive death

  813. and somehow

  814. maintain your pride

  815. that God has to stay distant.

  816. Like that just,

  817. it can't happen.

  818. And it matters.

  819. A couple of months ago,

  820. I had a really good friend

  821. from out west come to visit

  822. and he asked me

  823. if I wanted to spend

  824. a couple of hours

  825. with him in the afternoon.

  826. So I did some rearranging

  827. of my schedule.

  828. I don't get to see him

  829. very often

  830. and I went to spend

  831. some time with him.

  832. And I have to confess,

  833. as soon as I arrived,

  834. my face fell

  835. because he brought

  836. his dad with him.

  837. And in fact,

  838. if he had said,

  839. would you like to hang out

  840. with me and my dad,

  841. I probably would have said no.

  842. Not that his dad's a bad guy,

  843. but I,

  844. it just completely changed

  845. the whole time, right?

  846. I don't know the dad at all

  847. from Adam

  848. and all of a sudden

  849. there's this,

  850. you can't just sort of talk

  851. the way you can

  852. with your friend.

  853. Well, in the new heaven

  854. and the new earth,

  855. Jesus is always going to be there.

  856. His presence is going to be

  857. overwhelmingly felt.

  858. But the fact,

  859. you see,

  860. here's what's so wonderful

  861. about the gospel.

  862. People,

  863. it's not that

  864. somehow or another

  865. I've gotten over my pride.

  866. pride and my self-centeredness

  867. or that I've,

  868. in my own power,

  869. have developed

  870. a human love for God

  871. so that I can fit in heaven.

  872. Too bad the rest of you can't

  873. because you're all still

  874. so proud and self-centered

  875. and think the universe

  876. revolves around you

  877. and haven't developed

  878. a love of God.

  879. That's just sort of being proud,

  880. looking down your nose

  881. at other people.

  882. No,

  883. I stand at the foot

  884. of the cross

  885. and say,

  886. Jesus,

  887. I can't get away

  888. from my pride.

  889. I can't get away

  890. from my self-centeredness.

  891. I have to confess,

  892. I don't necessarily

  893. want to know

  894. that you can see

  895. everything in my life

  896. all the time.

  897. And all you can do

  898. is say,

  899. I can't fix this,

  900. I can't stop it,

  901. I can't...

  902. And you see,

  903. it's when you...

  904. And that's part of it.

  905. Part of the growth

  906. in godliness

  907. is you realize

  908. more and more and more

  909. just the wonders

  910. of what Jesus

  911. has done for you

  912. because you confess

  913. that to him

  914. and the next thing you do

  915. is you feel his arm

  916. around you

  917. and he says,

  918. George,

  919. I know that you can't.

  920. I know that you can't

  921. put your pride to death.

  922. I know you can't

  923. stop your self-centeredness.

  924. I know that there's

  925. part of you

  926. that still doesn't

  927. want my presence.

  928. I know you can't

  929. fix yourself.

  930. I've done everything

  931. that needs to be done

  932. to be made right

  933. with God.

  934. I've done it all

  935. for you.

  936. You just have to receive

  937. it by grace,

  938. by faith.

  939. It's a pure gift.

  940. Just two things

  941. really very,

  942. very quickly.

  943. If you could put up

  944. the first point.

  945. I mean the next point.

  946. One is,

  947. just very briefly,

  948. Christian,

  949. your body matters

  950. on this side of the grave

  951. but you will have

  952. a resurrection body

  953. in the new heaven

  954. and the new earth.

  955. Just to remember that.

  956. Your bodies matter

  957. on this side of the grave.

  958. Take care of them

  959. as best you can.

  960. But God has blessed

  961. some of us

  962. with spectacular bodies

  963. and some of us

  964. have not been blessed

  965. with spectacular bodies

  966. and all of us

  967. if we live long enough

  968. will have problems

  969. with disease

  970. and illness

  971. and conditions.

  972. But this body

  973. that we have

  974. is not the final body

  975. that we will have.

  976. We should care

  977. for this body

  978. as much as we can

  979. and we should respect

  980. the body

  981. and the integrity

  982. of bodies

  983. of other people

  984. as much as we can.

  985. But in the new heaven

  986. and the new earth

  987. we will have

  988. a resurrected body.

  989. One that will not age.

  990. One that will not die

  991. and grow old.

  992. One that will not

  993. be feeble.

  994. Final thing

  995. if you could put it up

  996. Claire

  997. that would be

  998. very helpful.

  999. You know

  1000. one of the things

  1001. which is so beautiful

  1002. about this story

  1003. is that Jesus

  1004. doesn't say to Mary

  1005. Mary you know

1006. how come you're so clueless?

1007. I told you all these times

1008. I was going to rise

  1009. from the dead.

  1010. And Mary

1011. why are you so clueless?

1012. Like couldn't you figure out

  1013. from the grave clothes

  1014. that something

  1015. no no no

  1016. he doesn't say that.

1017. He doesn't say to Mary

  1018. I think I need

  1019. to make you

1020. have a three year course

  1021. in theology

  1022. and biblical studies

  1023. where I'll teach you

  1024. before you can go

  1025. and tell anybody

  1026. about the fact

  1027. that I've risen

  1028. from the dead.

  1029. He doesn't say

1030. that all of the apostles

  1031. have to go back

  1032. to school

  1033. for five years

1034. and then have a coach

  1035. before they can do

  1036. anything for him.

  1037. Jesus is patient

  1038. while you grow

  1039. and uses you

  1040. even when

  1041. you are

  1042. a baby Christian

  1043. or an immature Christian.

  1044. That's so

  1045. what's wonderful

  1046. about this story.

  1047. I mean

  1048. you know

  1049. we pointed out

  1050. the

  1051. things in Mary

  1052. that

  1053. you know

  1054. are less than

  1055. good

  1056. but Jesus

  1057. uses her.

  1058. He says

  1059. you go

  1060. and you tell them

  1061. what you've seen

  1062. and the implication

  1063. is that

  1064. the apostles

  1065. have been forgiven

  1066. for their sin

  1067. and

  1068. and

  1069. and they're told

  1070. to go ahead

  1071. and so God

  1072. even in this story

  1073. you see that God

  1074. uses you

  1075. even if you don't

  1076. know a whole lot

  1077. of theology

  1078. even if you don't

  1079. know a lot

  1080. and your life

  1081. isn't perfect

  1082. God still uses you

  1083. at every point

1084. in time in your life

1085. he can still use you

  1086. for his good

  1087. for his glory.

  1088. Let's stand.

  1089. Bow our heads

  1090. in prayer.

  1091. Father we thank you

  1092. for Jesus

  1093. we thank you

  1094. that he tasted

  1095. all there is

  1096. to taste of death

  1097. we thank you

  1098. that he not only

  1099. conquered death

  1100. but he conquered

  1101. that which caused

  1102. death

  1103. which is our sin

  1104. and our pride

  1105. we thank and praise

  1106. you that he will

  1107. help us

  1108. that he alone

  1109. can fit us

  1110. for heaven

  1111. we give you

  1112. thanks and praise

  1113. that he is patient

  1114. with us

  1115. he knows

  1116. our frailty

  1117. he knows

  1118. our weakness

  1119. he knows

  1120. our inadequacies

  1121. he also knows

  1122. our strengths

  1123. and excellencies

  1124. that he is patient

  1125. with us

  1126. that he uses us

  1127. even in the midst

  1128. of our inadequacies

1129. that he still loves us

  1130. and will use us

  1131. Father we thank you

  1132. for your great patience

  1133. with us

  1134. and we give you

  1135. thanks and praise

1136. that we have a strong

  1137. that you desire us

  1138. to have a strong

  1139. and living hope

1140. that death is not final

1141. that we will be with you

  1142. in the new heaven

  1143. and the new earth

  1144. that we will have

  1145. resurrected bodies

  1146. and it's not

  1147. because of our worth

  1148. but because of what

  1149. Christ has done

  1150. and we ask Father

  1151. that these truths

1152. would be deep in our heart

1153. and we ask these things

  1154. in Jesus' name

  1155. Amen

  1156. Amen

  1157. Amen

  1158. Amen
