  1. Today's scripture is found in Genesis 3. You can follow along on the screen behind me or in your bulletins.

  2. Starting in verse 1, we read,

  3. Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

  4. He said to the woman,

  5. Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden?

  6. The woman said to the serpent,

  7. We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

  8. but God did say, You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden,

  9. and you must not touch it, or you will die.

  10. You will not certainly die, the serpent said to the woman,

  11. for God knows that when you eat from it, your eyes will be opened,

  12. and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  13. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye,

  14. and also desirable for gaining wisdom,

  15. she took some and ate it.

  16. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

  17. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked,

  18. so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  19. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God

  20. as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day,

  21. and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

  22. But the Lord God called to the man,

  23. Where are you?

  24. He answered,

  25. I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid,

  26. because I was naked, so I hid.

  27. And he said,

  28. Who told you that you were naked?

  29. Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?

  30. The man said,

  31. The woman you put here with me,

  32. She gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.

  33. Then the Lord God said to the woman,

  34. What is this you have done?

  35. The woman said,

  36. The serpent deceived me, and I ate it.

  37. So the Lord God said to the serpent,

  38. Because you have done this,

  39. cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals.

  40. You will crawl on your belly,

  41. and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

  42. And I will put enmity between you and the woman,

  43. and between your offspring and hers.

  44. He will crush your head,

  45. and you will strike his heel.

  46. To the woman he said,

  47. I will make your pains and childbearing very severe.

  48. With painful labor you will give birth to children.

  49. Your desire will be for your husband,

  50. and he will rule over you.

  51. To Adam he said,

  52. Because you listened to your wife,

  53. and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you,

  54. you must not eat from it.

  55. Cursed is the ground because of you.

  56. Through painful toil you will eat fruit from it

  57. all the days of your life.

  58. It will produce thorns and thistles for you.

  59. You will eat the plants of the field.

  60. By the sweat of your brow,

  61. you will eat your food

  62. until you return to the ground.

  63. Since from it you were taken,

  64. for dust you are,

  65. and to dust you will return.

  66. This is God's word.

  67. Great.

  68. Thank you, Soda, for praying.

  69. Jaya, for reading.

  70. Yeah, we're going to look at this passage together.

  71. But if we want God to speak to us,

  72. we should pray.

  73. So why don't we do that first?

  74. Let's pray together.

  75. Our Father, thank you that you speak to us.

  76. Thank you that you tell us the truth.

  77. If you tell us about ourselves,

  78. about the world,

  79. please would we listen.

  80. Thank you that you also give us hope.

  81. Pray that, yeah,

  82. today we would listen to the bad news

  83. and the good news

  84. and come away encouraged by Jesus.

  85. In his name we pray.

  86. Amen.

  87. Great.

  88. So we're doing a series,

  89. and it is about our physical bodies,

  90. as you may know.

  91. If you've been here the past few weeks,

  92. our bodies,

  93. yeah,

  94. we often don't think about them.

  95. We,

  96. yeah,

  97. we just have bodies.

  98. We think they're not important.

  99. Actually,

  100. they are.

  101. So we're having this series on it.

  102. And certainly two weeks ago,

  103. Kevin talked about how our bodies

  104. are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  105. And he encouraged us,

  106. I think,

  107. to give thanks for our bodies,

  108. which I think we don't often do

  109. because we take our bodies for granted.

  110. We don't notice them.

  111. Actually,

  112. when do we notice our body

  113. is when they don't work,

  114. right?

  115. When it hurts.

  116. When you come out of bed

  117. and your foot is hurting

  118. or when you stomp your toe

  119. or when you have a fever

  120. or when you have been working hard

  121. in the office

  122. and you're so tired,

  123. that is when you suddenly notice,

  124. okay,

  125. there's,

  126. my body is struggling.

  127. My body is hurting.

  128. It can,

  129. that's kind of short-term things.

  130. Maybe there's diseases that you,

  131. long-term conditions that you have.

  132. Some things we don't even think about anymore,

  133. right?

  134. So,

  135. I wear contact lenses

  136. and I think I've worn them now

  137. for 33 years

  138. and for 33 years,

  139. every morning,

  140. I put them in

  141. and every evening,

  142. I take them out.

  143. I don't think about it anymore

  144. but actually,

  145. my eyes don't work.

  146. I can see until here

  147. and no further,

  148. right?

  149. My body is broken.

  150. I don't know if you've ever been

  151. to the church office.

  152. There's one desk

  153. that has this really wacky keyboard.

  154. I don't know if you've seen that,

  155. if you've ever been to the office.

  156. Well,

  157. it's my keyboard

  158. because ever since my student days,

  159. I've got repetitive strain injury

  160. and without this keyboard,

  161. I've got all this pain

  162. in my arms

  163. and my hands

  164. and I don't think about

  165. but actually,

  166. yeah,

  167. my body is broken

  168. and these are mild things,

  169. right?

  170. Just contact lenses

  171. and a keyboard.

  172. Some of us,

  173. we have far more,

  174. far worse conditions

  175. that we struggle with.

  176. That is the reality

  177. of our bodies

  178. and they don't seem

  179. as wonderful

  180. as the Bible says,

  181. right,

  182. sometimes?

  183. Well,

  184. that's because we need

  185. to listen to the whole Bible.

  186. The thing is,

  187. the Bible is not

  188. an aesthetic book.

  189. There's a story

  190. and just as our bodies,

  191. yeah,

  192. we are created

  193. and there's still

  194. a lot of goodness

  195. about our bodies.

  196. Actually,

  197. they are broken

  198. and that's the big topic today,

  199. how our bodies are broken,

  200. how we see that

  201. and what we should do

  202. with that

  203. because if we don't know

  204. that our bodies are broken,

  205. you probably wonder,

  206. well,

  207. why does the Bible

  208. is so positive

  209. about our body

  210. when it hurts so much?

  211. So that's what

  212. we're going to look at

  213. and yeah,

  214. this chapter,

  215. of course,

  216. is the chapter

  217. that we always go back to.

  218. I think this is

  219. the 11th sermon

  220. at Watermark

  221. that has this chapter

  222. as the reading

  223. because,

  224. you know,

  225. we talk about work.

  226. Well,

  227. you want to understand

  228. why your work is hard?

  229. Come to Genesis 3

  230. and now you want to understand

  231. why your body hurts?

  232. Come to Genesis 3.

  233. This is so foundational,

  234. right?

  235. Because this is the world

  236. we live in

  237. and God made a beautiful,

  238. perfect world.

  239. He put Adam and Eve

  240. in the garden

  241. and they had everything

  242. but then they listened

  243. to the serpent

  244. who told them that,

  245. you know,

  246. God doesn't love you,

  247. God isn't good to you,

  248. why don't you take this fruit

  249. and you don't need him

  250. and they listened

  251. and they took it

  252. and then their relationship

  253. with God was broken

  254. and then,

  255. yeah,

  256. and as a result

  257. everything was broken,

  258. their relationship

  259. with each other.

  260. You hear them blaming

  261. each other

  262. for what happened.

  263. They are hiding

  264. from God

  265. and of course then,

  266. yeah,

  267. the curse.

  268. If you've been here

  269. earlier this year,

  270. we had kind of

  271. the cause

  272. and the effects,

  273. the sin

  274. and the curse.

  275. Well,

  276. we are cursed.

  277. We live in a cursed world.

  278. As you hear,

  279. cursed is the ground

  280. because of you

  281. in pain.

  282. You will eat of it

  283. all the days of your life

  284. or earlier with the woman.

  285. I will surely multiply

  286. your pain

  287. in childbearing.

  288. In pain,

  289. you shall bring forth children.

  290. Pain is a refrain,

  291. right,

  292. for Adam and Eve.

  293. This is life now.

  294. God gave you everything

  295. but you don't want God,

  296. well,

  297. you miss out

  298. on everything else

  299. and it's pain

  300. and ultimately death,

  301. right?

  302. To dust you are,

  303. sorry,

  304. for dust you are

  305. and to dust you shall return.

  306. The world is now broken.

  307. Work is hard.

  308. There's natural disasters.

  309. There's diseases.

  310. There are wild animals.

  311. The world is broken

  312. and that's why,

  313. yeah,

  314. our bodies are broken.

  315. That's why we suffer.

  316. So that's what we're going

  317. to talk about.

  318. We're going to just think

  319. about some of the details

  320. and how we see that

  321. and how we deal with that.

  322. And just to say,

  323. we are whole people.

  324. I mean,

  325. we talk about our bodies

  326. but sometimes it's hard to know

  327. where does your body start

  328. and where does something else begin?

  329. Right?

  330. Like your mind.

  331. Is that your body?

  332. Well,

  333. in some ways,

  334. how I think is affected

  335. by my brain,

  336. right?

  337. And my brain is part of my body.

  338. So even though I might think,

  339. well,

  340. that's my body

  341. and my mind,

  342. actually,

  343. they're connected.

  344. You know,

  345. your desires.

  346. Is that your body

  347. or is that your mind

  348. or your spirit?

  349. And we are whole people

  350. and so,

  351. you know,

  352. they'll be a bit mixed up

  353. but to be honest,

  354. yeah,

  355. we are broken

  356. in all of those.

  357. So,

  358. how do we see

  359. our broken bodies?

  360. Well,

  361. first of all,

  362. I guess,

  363. just like in this chapter,

  364. it starts with sin,

  365. right?

  366. we use our bodies

  367. for sin.

  368. Our bodies

  369. are sinful.

  370. Adam and Eve,

  371. of course,

  372. they use their bodies

  373. to sin.

  374. Last week,

  375. Oscar talked about,

  376. you know,

  377. it's about our hearts

  378. but what we do

  379. with our hearts

  380. get expressed

  381. with our bodies,

  382. right?

  383. If we love God,

  384. we will love him

  385. with our bodies

  386. and the thing is,

  387. if we sin,

  388. we sin with our bodies

  389. and so often,

  390. the Bible talks about sin

  391. as,

  392. yeah,

  393. with your body

  394. and so Romans 6,

  395. you know,

  396. if you're a Christian,

  397. just as you once

  398. presented your members,

  399. your body parts

  400. as slaves to impurity

  401. and to lawlessness

  402. leading to more lawlessness,

  403. so now present your members

  404. as slaves to righteousness.

  405. Your body parts,

  406. you used to use them

  407. for sin,

  408. for impurity,

  409. now use them for God,

  410. right?

  411. That's the idea

  412. but we sin with our bodies.

  413. Sometimes it's very obvious,

  414. sexual sin,

  415. physical violence

  416. and abuse,

  417. that's what you do

  418. with your body

  419. but,

  420. you know,

  421. those unkind words,

  422. they come out of your mouth

  423. and you covet with your eyes,

  424. right?

  425. And you,

  426. it's nasty text

  427. with your thumbs

  428. and,

  429. right?

  430. And you plot revenge

  431. with your brain

  432. and,

  433. right?

  434. It's our bodies

  435. that we use to sin

  436. but it's not just that

  437. our body is kind of neutral

  438. and you can use it

  439. for good and for bad.

  440. Actually,

  441. the way the Bible

  442. talks about our bodies,

  443. it's like there's

  444. this kind of corruption

  445. and when Adam and Eve

  446. sinned,

  447. our bodies became corrupt

  448. and it's like sin

  449. is kind of running

  450. through our bodies

  451. and we just can't do right

  452. even if we try.

  453. Romans 7

  454. is a very classic

  455. and listen to the Apostle Paul

  456. as he talks.

  457. verse 1.

  458. Verse 1.

  459. For I delight

  460. in the law of God

  461. in my inner being

  462. but I see in my members

  463. another law

  464. waging war

  465. against the law

  466. of my mind

  467. and making me captive

  468. to the law of sin

  469. that dwells in my members.

  470. Wretched man that I am,

  471. who will deliver me

  472. from this body of death?

  473. Hey,

  474. you can hear him.

  475. He wants to do good,

  476. he wants to please God

  477. but he,

  478. there's just this sin

  479. inside him

  480. that in his body,

  481. in his members

  482. and how can I get rid

  483. of this body?

  484. It's like the corruption

  485. of sin,

  486. it runs through us.

  487. I don't know physically

  488. how that exactly works,

  489. right?

  490. But the truth is

  491. that certainly

  492. every human being

  493. is sinful,

  494. right?

  495. If you have young kids,

  496. you don't have to teach them

  497. to disobey you,

  498. you don't have to teach them

  499. to throw a tantrum,

  500. they can do that naturally.

  501. Why?

  502. Well,

  503. that's who we are.

  504. You need to teach them

  505. to be kind.

  506. You need to teach them

  507. to obey,

  508. right?

  509. That's what we're like.

  510. We're all corrupt.

  511. But,

  512. right?

  513. When will we get rid of sin?

  514. Well,

  515. only,

  516. well,

  517. that's what he says,

  518. who will deliver me

  519. from this body?

  520. It's only when you die

  521. that we no longer sin.

  522. Hopefully,

  523. as you grow in Christ,

  524. you will sin less

  525. but we will struggle

  526. with sin

  527. until we get a new body.

  528. That's the truth.

  529. And so,

  530. we need to know that.

  531. Some of you may be

  532. very aware

  533. you struggle with sin

  534. and you feel

  535. you can't get rid of it.

  536. Yeah,

  537. there's this corruption

  538. in our bodies.

  539. They are broken.

  540. And in other people.

  541. Yeah,

  542. the sweetest little baby

  543. is a corrupt sinner.

  544. You know?

  545. We sometimes don't get that

  546. maybe with adults,

  547. right?

  548. So,

  549. someone looks very good

  550. on the outside

  551. and we think they're also

  552. very good on the inside.

  553. No.

  554. Just because someone

  555. is very beautiful

  556. or very handsome

  557. doesn't mean

  558. they are also perfect.

  559. They are sinners.

  560. What?

  561. We need to know that

  562. about ourselves

  563. and about everyone else.

  564. So,

  565. sin is one big way

  566. that,

  567. yeah,

  568. we're all broken.

  569. A second thing here

  570. that comes

  571. is shame,

  572. right?

  573. There's shame.

  574. So,

  575. you know,

  576. end of chapter 2,

  577. Adam and Eve,

  578. they were,

  579. the man and his wife

  580. were both naked

  581. and they were not ashamed.

  582. Everything was great.

  583. What happens

  584. after they sin?

  585. Well,

  586. 3 verse 7.

  587. Then the eyes of both

  588. were opened

  589. and they knew

  590. that they were naked

  591. and they sewed

  592. thick leaves together

  593. and made themselves

  594. loincloths.

  595. And then later

  596. God shows up

  597. and they hide,

  598. right?

  599. They feel ashamed.

  600. They feel ashamed

  601. of their bodies,

  602. right?

  603. They try to cover up.

  604. They know they're not

  605. who they should be.

  606. They're kind of ashamed

  607. of who they are

  608. and so they hide.

  609. And that's a reality,

  610. right?

  611. None of us,

  612. we all feel

  613. like we are not

  614. the people we should be.

  615. We want to hide.

  616. That's why we put on

  617. clothes and other stuff

  618. or we stay away

  619. from people.

  620. We don't open up.

  621. We are ashamed

  622. of who we are

  623. and often ashamed

  624. of our bodies.

  625. And that's a reality.

  626. Now,

  627. sometimes that is,

  628. of course,

  629. right.

  630. I mean,

  631. if you compare yourself

  632. to a holy God,

  633. yeah,

  634. we should be ashamed.

  635. We know the way we live,

  636. the way we've rejected him.

  637. We should be ashamed

  638. and yeah,

  639. if it wasn't for Jesus,

  640. we'd have a huge problem

  641. with God.

  642. But,

  643. of course,

  644. other types of shame

  645. are not right,

  646. right?

  647. Sometimes you feel ashamed

  648. because you don't look

  649. like the supermodel

  650. in the advertisement.

  651. That,

  652. of course,

  653. is a wrong kind of shame,

  654. right?

  655. That's just unrealistic beauty.

  656. That's just not,

  657. you know,

  658. then you don't need

  659. to be ashamed

  660. of who you are.

  661. Don't listen to those things.

  662. We will come back

  663. to that in a moment

  664. as well.

  665. But,

  666. yeah,

  667. sometimes shame is right.

  668. Sometimes we feel ashamed

  669. because of how we look

  670. or whatever

  671. for the wrong reasons.

  672. Yeah,

  673. we,

  674. you know,

  675. maybe your body's changing

  676. or whatever.

  677. But,

  678. yeah,

  679. shame.

  680. It's a reality.

  681. But then,

  682. the big one,

  683. I guess,

  684. how we feel it the most,

  685. suffering,

  686. right?

  687. This is a world

  688. of brokenness

  689. and our bodies

  690. are broken.

  691. This broken world

  692. affects us

  693. and hurts us

  694. and we see that

  695. in so many ways.

  696. Just to say,

  697. when we talk about

  698. suffering,

  699. you know,

  700. the world is broken.

  701. It's not that,

  702. you know,

  703. my suffering

  704. is due to my sin.

  705. Sometimes it is,

  706. right?

  707. If I live an unhealthy life,

  708. then,

  709. yeah,

  710. I will suffer

  711. the consequences.

  712. But,

  713. at the same time,

  714. the whole world is broken

  715. and there's a kind of randomness.

  716. You know,

  717. sometimes there's a really evil person

  718. and they are happy

  719. and healthy.

  720. And then,

  721. here's a little child

  722. suffering unimaginably

  723. who's never done anything wrong,

  724. right?

  725. That is the world we live in.

  726. It's all a bit random.

  727. So,

  728. don't feel,

  729. you know,

  730. I'm suffering.

  731. That's because of something

  732. I've done wrong.

  733. It doesn't work like that.

  734. But,

  735. we all suffer

  736. from this broken world.

  737. What can we talk about?

  738. You know,

  739. lots of words

  740. with a D,

  741. usually.

  742. I mean,

  743. can think of

  744. destitution,

  745. deprivation.

  746. Here's some big ones.

  747. Disease,

  748. right?

  749. Diseases are now in the world

  750. since Adam and Eve

  751. and we,

  752. you know,

  753. sometimes small ones,

  754. sometimes big ones.

  755. But,

  756. we get,

  757. we're confined to bed.

  758. We need to go to hospital.

  759. We need treatment.

  760. Our bodies don't work,

  761. do what they do.

  762. If you're a doctor,

  763. you probably know

  764. there's so many diseases.

  765. Damage,

  766. right?

  767. So often,

  768. we get damaged,

  769. you know,

  770. because you get hurt

  771. by things,

  772. by accidents,

  773. you're cutting food

  774. and you cut yourself,

  775. you stomp your toe.

  776. Bigger damage,

  777. right?

  778. Accidents

  779. that can really

  780. disable you

  781. for the rest of your life

  782. or something like that.

  783. Mental damage as well.

  784. I don't know,

  785. does that fall under our body?

  786. So many of us,

  787. we have scars from,

  788. you know,

  789. people,

  790. what people have said to us.

  791. Things that have happened to us

  792. that have just

  793. led to trauma

  794. and experiences

  795. and then we have this damage

  796. kind of in our mind

  797. that,

  798. yeah,

  799. affects the way we live,

  800. that we,

  801. stops us functioning

  802. as we want to.

  803. That kind of brokenness,

  804. damage.

  805. Here's a big one,

  806. defects.

  807. That's what we struggle with,

  808. right?

  809. Because so often,

  810. diseases can be treated

  811. and damage,

  812. you know,

  813. yeah,

  814. you go to the hospital,

  815. you get a cast

  816. and,

  817. but defects.

  818. Some people are just born

  819. with something wrong with them.

  820. Now,

  821. legs that are not the same length.

  822. Someone who is blind.

  823. People who are infertile.

  824. Infertile,

  825. right?

  826. That can happen.

  827. Less fingers

  828. than you should.

  829. DNA,

  830. that means you are very prone

  831. to depression

  832. or Alzheimer's

  833. and you're just born with it

  834. and it's there

  835. for the rest of your life.

  836. Sometimes it can be treated,

  837. often it can't.

  838. Life-threatening allergies,

  839. right?

  840. We are broken,

  841. we are defective

  842. and because it's

  843. for the rest of your life

  844. that can be so hard

  845. to deal with,

  846. right?

  847. The brokenness

  848. or if you have it

  849. in loved ones,

  850. if you have a child

  851. that you really need

  852. to care for

  853. because of,

  854. yeah,

  855. there's a defect

  856. and,

  857. yeah,

  858. it's not a nice word

  859. but that's the truth,

  860. right?

  861. Right?

  862. And just to say,

  863. of course,

  864. I'm talking about

  865. real defects,

  866. right?

  867. Really,

  868. your body isn't working.

  869. Again,

  870. sometimes people,

  871. they compare themselves

  872. with social media

  873. and think,

  874. oh,

  875. my body is defective,

  876. right?

  877. It's,

  878. parts of my body

  879. are the wrong shape

  880. and the wrong size

  881. and the wrong color.

  882. That's not a defect.

  883. You know,

  884. God has made billions

  885. of human beings

  886. and we're all different

  887. and that's just part

  888. of the wonderful variety,

  889. right?

  890. So often,

  891. there's nothing wrong

  892. with your body.

  893. I'm talking about

  894. real defects,

  895. right?

  896. That your body

  897. really doesn't work,

  898. that it's really not

  899. as a human should be

  900. but those are not defects.

  901. Think of anorexia.

  902. You know,

  903. a girl who is very thin

  904. but she thinks she's fat

  905. and she hurts her body

  906. more to just lose weight.

  907. It's her brain that's wrong.

  908. It's nothing wrong

  909. with her body.

  910. Well,

  911. nothing wrong

  912. with the rest of her body

  913. if that makes sense

  914. but,

  915. yeah,

  916. defects,

  917. right?

  918. And then,

  919. of course,

  920. what else?

  921. Decay.

  922. This is when you're

  923. a bit older like me.

  924. You start growing old.

  925. You lose your hair.

  926. Your hair turns gray.

  927. You lose your muscle.

  928. You start forgetting things.

  929. You lose your mind.

  930. We all get old.

  931. Yeah,

  932. some of you are really feeling that.

  933. You can't do

  934. what you used to do.

  935. You try to play sports

  936. and you get hurt

  937. and injured

  938. and then it takes ages

  939. to heal

  940. because you're just getting old.

  941. Why?

  942. Because,

  943. well,

  944. it leads to the last D of death

  945. and one day

  946. we will all die.

  947. Our body will fully,

  948. finally stop working

  949. and God is the God of life

  950. and when we reject him,

  951. we have death

  952. and the death rate

  953. has never changed.

  954. It's still 100%.

  955. No matter what we have tried to do,

  956. no matter how much technology

  957. we have,

  958. we will all die.

  959. Our loved ones die,

  960. right?

  961. That's something we really feel

  962. and some of us are very aware

  963. that the death is hanging over us.

  964. That is the ultimate brokenness

  965. when our bodies will ultimately fail.

  966. So yeah,

  967. that is our,

  968. the brokenness of this world,

  969. the brokenness of our bodies

  970. and I don't know how you feel.

  971. My guess is you will feel depressed,

  972. right?

  973. Because this is depressing.

  974. This is the world we live in

  975. and it's,

  976. yeah,

  977. and if you,

  978. if this is all there is,

  979. if you just,

  980. you're going to decay and die,

  981. isn't that a horrible prospect?

  982. Now,

  983. how do we deal with this?

  984. Well,

  985. in some way,

  986. we shouldn't complain.

  987. We're sinners.

  988. This is a broken world

  989. and it's better than we deserve.

  990. But here's a few things.

  991. First of all,

  992. we can have faith.

  993. We can trust God

  994. in the suffering and brokenness

  995. of this world

  996. and of our bodies.

  997. We can have faith.

  998. We can trust.

  999. What would that,

  1000. well,

  1001. what do I mean?

  1002. Well,

  1003. even this,

  1004. in our brokenness,

  1005. you know,

  1006. if you're a Christian,

  1007. God is your father,

  1008. right?

1009. He is in control of everything.

  1010. He shapes you.

  1011. He forms you.

1012. He knows what's going on

  1013. and he,

  1014. he has a purpose

  1015. in what's happening.

  1016. So,

  1017. the brokenness

  1018. that you experience,

  1019. God promises

  1020. he's using that.

  1021. And so,

1022. like we see in James,

  1023. you know,

  1024. trials lead to steadfastness.

1025. We can trust him in that.

  1026. A big example,

  1027. of course,

  1028. is the Apostle Paul,

  1029. right?

  1030. He had a problem.

  1031. 2 Corinthians 12.

  1032. And so,

  1033. to keep me

  1034. from becoming conceited

  1035. because of the surpassing

  1036. greatness of the revelations,

1037. a thorn was given me

  1038. in the flesh,

  1039. a messenger of Satan

  1040. to harass me,

  1041. to keep me

  1042. from becoming conceited.

  1043. Three times,

1044. I pleaded with the Lord

  1045. about this,

1046. that it should leave me.

  1047. But he said,

  1048. he said to me,

  1049. my grace is sufficient

  1050. for you,

  1051. for my power

  1052. is made perfect

  1053. in weakness.

  1054. I don't know

  1055. what it was,

  1056. but some kind of,

  1057. something physical,

  1058. right?

1059. A thorn in the flesh.

  1060. Something that he

  1061. struggled with.

  1062. The great Apostle Paul

  1063. is not,

  1064. he didn't have

  1065. perfect health,

  1066. no,

  1067. he had something

1068. and it really annoyed him.

  1069. But,

  1070. you know,

1071. God gave that to him

  1072. for a reason.

  1073. I mean,

  1074. it was a messenger

  1075. of Satan,

  1076. right?

  1077. In some ways,

  1078. God didn't cause it.

  1079. It's caused by

  1080. other causes,

1081. but God was in control.

  1082. And God gave it

  1083. for a good reason,

  1084. hey,

1085. to stop you becoming proud,

  1086. to keep you humble.

  1087. And Paul learned

  1088. to accept that,

  1089. that hey,

  1090. yeah,

  1091. I suffer with this,

1092. but I can trust God

  1093. with it.

  1094. And so,

  1095. I don't know

  1096. what you are facing.

  1097. We can trust God

  1098. with it,

  1099. that hey,

  1100. God is using this.

  1101. And even though

  1102. it's hard,

  1103. I know God

1104. is with me in this

  1105. and he's got a purpose.

  1106. It's not always easy,

  1107. it can take time.

  1108. Sometimes it's not even

  1109. easy to know

  1110. what to do.

  1111. I mean,

  1112. clearly Paul prayed

1113. that he would take it,

1114. that God would take it away.

  1115. That's a good thing to do.

  1116. It's not just that

  1117. he just accepted it.

  1118. I mean,

  1119. and if you're sick,

  1120. it's good to go

  1121. to the doctor,

  1122. right?

1123. And if your leg is broken,

  1124. please go to hospital.

  1125. That's not a bad thing.

1126. But sometimes it's really hard

1127. to know what to do.

  1128. Infertility.

  1129. What do you do?

  1130. Do you just accept

  1131. that you don't,

  1132. that you know,

1133. that you can't have children?

  1134. Do you adopt?

1135. Do you seek fertility treatment?

  1136. They're all legitimate options

  1137. open for Christians?

  1138. You know,

  1139. trusting God.

1140. What does it look like

  1141. in those cases?

  1142. It's actually

  1143. very difficult.

  1144. I mean,

  1145. you know,

  1146. as you get older,

  1147. you need to work

  1148. on your health,

  1149. but how much,

  1150. right?

1151. You don't want to become

  1152. a gym rat,

  1153. you know,

1154. but at the same time,

1155. it's good to be healthy

1156. and work on your heart

  1157. and your,

  1158. right?

  1159. Those kind of things.

  1160. Actually,

  1161. there's a lot of wisdom

  1162. that you actually need

1163. how to deal with this.

  1164. But the basic idea,

  1165. hey,

  1166. I know I'm broken,

1167. but God is in control

  1168. of my brokenness

1169. and I can trust him in this.

  1170. That's the big message.

  1171. We can have faith.

  1172. And of course,

  1173. we should have love,

  1174. right?

  1175. We should care

  1176. care for each other.

  1177. If we know

  1178. that we're all broken

  1179. in so many ways,

  1180. so many ways

  1181. that we,

  1182. sometimes we can't see

  1183. in people,

  1184. but we know

  1185. we are scarred

  1186. and damaged

  1187. and there's things

  1188. going on.

  1189. Well,

  1190. it should give us

  1191. compassion,

  1192. first of all,

  1193. right?

  1194. We should be gentle

  1195. and patient

  1196. and gracious

  1197. with people

  1198. because

  1199. we're all broken.

  1200. And sometimes

  1201. as a pastor,

  1202. there's,

  1203. you know,

  1204. people,

  1205. and you know,

1206. this is what God says,

  1207. go and do it.

  1208. That's my instinct.

1209. Just go and do it.

  1210. But actually,

  1211. you know,

  1212. people have experienced things.

  1213. People have struggles.

  1214. People have mental health.

1215. People have things going on

  1216. in their life

  1217. that means they're broken.

  1218. They're struggling.

  1219. I should be gentle

  1220. and patient with people.

  1221. We can be gentle

1222. and patient with each other.

  1223. Maybe in your CG,

  1224. you know,

  1225. people aren't doing

1226. what you want them to do

  1227. or something.

  1228. Hey,

  1229. let's understand each other.

  1230. Let's have compassion

  1231. and be gracious

  1232. and gentle.

  1233. Practical help as well,

  1234. right?

  1235. It's not just

  1236. our attitude.

  1237. If people are broken,

1238. we should help each other.

1239. And it's great to hear

  1240. of someone in hospital

  1241. when their CG

1242. kind of jumps into action

1243. and takes care of them.

  1244. That's wonderful to see.

  1245. Sometimes,

  1246. as a church,

1247. we're really good at that.

  1248. I mean,

  1249. it's a lot easier

  1250. when it's short term,

  1251. though.

  1252. How about long term?

  1253. Maybe if you're,

  1254. you know,

  1255. I saw that prayed.

  1256. If you're caring

  1257. for elderly relatives

1258. and it's just every day,

  1259. every week,

  1260. caring,

  1261. every,

  1262. all this practical help

1263. that can be so tough

  1264. and hard.

1265. And you love this person,

1266. you want to help them,

  1267. but it's draining

  1268. and,

  1269. yeah.

1270. But love is a beautiful thing

  1271. in that case.

  1272. But it could be

  1273. all kinds of things,

  1274. right?

  1275. Not just that kind

  1276. of practical help.

  1277. Maybe someone

  1278. with same-sex attraction

  1279. and it means

  1280. they will never marry

  1281. someone they're attracted to.

1282. They're going to be lonely.

  1283. And so,

  1284. inviting them

1285. and hanging out with them

1286. for the rest of their life,

1287. that can be a long thing.

1288. But it's a good thing to do.

1289. It's how we can love each other,

  1290. practically.

  1291. But finally,

  1292. beyond faith and love,

  1293. I mean,

  1294. if this is all,

  1295. if it's just,

  1296. yeah,

  1297. we love each other,

  1298. but we still die,

  1299. it's nothing.

  1300. No,

  1301. there is hope.

  1302. Yeah?

  1303. As Christians,

  1304. we have hope.

  1305. Of course,

  1306. if,

  1307. you know,

1308. if this world is all there is

1309. and we're just going to decay

  1310. and die,

  1311. that's hopeless.

  1312. But as Christians,

  1313. no,

  1314. there is hope.

  1315. Right?

1316. We know there is more.

  1317. I mean,

  1318. back in this chapter,

1319. all the way at the beginning

  1320. of the Bible,

  1321. there is,

  1322. there is hope.

  1323. Things went wrong

  1324. with the serpent.

  1325. But one day,

  1326. yeah,

1327. God says in verse 15,

  1328. to the serpent,

1329. I'll put enmity between you

  1330. and the woman,

  1331. between your offspring

  1332. and her offspring,

1333. he shall bruise your head.

  1334. Right?

  1335. It's like,

  1336. humanity was mastered

  1337. by the serpent,

  1338. but now,

1339. someone is going to step

  1340. on the serpent.

  1341. Right?

  1342. He masters the serpent.

1343. He deals with the problem.

  1344. The problem of sin

  1345. will be dealt with.

  1346. Later in the chapter,

  1347. God provides clothing.

1348. He deals with their shame.

  1349. It's like,

1350. the things that are wrong,

  1351. the brokenness,

1352. God will deal with it.

1353. And as we read on

  1354. in the whole Bible,

  1355. yeah,

  1356. God will deal with

1357. all our sin and suffering.

1358. He'll make this new world

1359. that we've been singing about.

  1360. The new creation.

1361. It's going to be wonderful.

  1362. And so,

  1363. we should have hope.

  1364. As,

  1365. yeah,

  1366. Romans 8.23

1367. is such a great verse.

1368. This is the Christian attitude.

  1369. Not only the creation,

  1370. but we ourselves,

1371. who have the first fruits

  1372. of the Spirit,

  1373. groan inwardly

  1374. as we wait eagerly

  1375. for adoption as sons,

1376. the redemption of our bodies.

  1377. In a chapter about

1378. the brokenness of the world,

  1379. we groan.

  1380. Right?

1381. We want to get out of it

  1382. and we wait eagerly

  1383. for the time

  1384. that our bodies

  1385. are set free.

  1386. That is,

  1387. Christians,

  1388. what we do.

  1389. So,

1390. we need to look forward.

  1391. My wife still remembers

  1392. that when I was,

1393. when my kids were young,

  1394. I would always,

  1395. whenever they grazed

  1396. their knee

  1397. or they had pain,

  1398. I always would say,

  1399. yeah, yeah,

1400. this is a world of pain,

  1401. but Jesus is making

  1402. a world without pain

  1403. later.

  1404. Just giving them

  1405. a biblical framework.

  1406. But it's true, right?

  1407. If you know that,

  1408. it changes everything.

1409. If this is all we have,

  1410. it's so depressing.

1411. But if there is hope,

  1412. you know,

  1413. if one day

  1414. there will be

  1415. no more suffering,

  1416. no hurt,

  1417. nor pain,

  1418. as we just sang,

  1419. then it's okay.

1420. We can go through it.

1421. We just need to know

  1422. that there's an end,

  1423. right?

  1424. I don't know

  1425. if you remember COVID.

  1426. The worst thing

  1427. about COVID

  1428. was just,

  1429. it was never ending.

  1430. You never knew

1431. when it would be over.

  1432. But if you know

  1433. something will be over,

  1434. you can endure it.

  1435. Yeah?

  1436. Yes,

  1437. we will all die,

  1438. but there is

  1439. a resurrection waiting.

  1440. As someone said,

  1441. death is not

  1442. a full stop

  1443. in your life.

  1444. It's a comma

  1445. for something

  1446. that comes later.

  1447. In two weeks,

1448. I'm going to preach on it.

  1449. The resurrection,

  1450. I'm already looking forward

  1451. to it.

  1452. Right?

  1453. We need hope.

  1454. And so,

  1455. yeah,

  1456. don't look back.

  1457. You know,

  1458. don't look,

  1459. oh,

  1460. when I was young,

1461. I could do all these things.

  1462. Don't look around.

  1463. Look forward.

  1464. Look forward

  1465. to the resurrection

  1466. that's coming.

  1467. There is hope.

  1468. There is an end.

  1469. And so,

  1470. we can trust God

  1471. in the meantime

  1472. with our brokenness.

1473. And how can we know that?

1474. Will God really have us back?

  1475. Yes,

  1476. he will.

1477. How do we know that?

  1478. Well,

  1479. in a moment,

  1480. we're going to have

  1481. the Lord's Supper.

1482. Look at the broken body

  1483. of Jesus.

  1484. You want to deal

  1485. with your broken body?

1486. Look at the broken body

  1487. of Jesus.

  1488. Because

1489. how would we get out of it

  1490. when we deserve punishment?

  1491. Well,

  1492. God himself

  1493. would take that punishment

  1494. on himself.

  1495. He would take

  1496. the brokenness

  1497. of our bodies.

  1498. He would

  1499. have a broken body

  1500. in our place

  1501. so we can be

  1502. redeemed.

  1503. Of course,

  1504. God didn't have a body,

  1505. right?

  1506. He's a spirit,

  1507. which is why

  1508. Jesus,

1509. he took on a body.

  1510. And we see that

  1511. Hebrews 2

  1512. puts it so

  1513. wonderfully

  1514. that

  1515. since therefore

  1516. the children

  1517. us share

  1518. in flesh and blood,

  1519. he himself

  1520. likewise

1521. partook of the same things

  1522. that through death

  1523. he might destroy

  1524. the one

  1525. who has the power

  1526. of death,

  1527. that is the devil.

  1528. And Jesus

1529. took on flesh and blood

  1530. so that

  1531. through his death

  1532. he could destroy

  1533. the devil.

  1534. As it says

  1535. in Genesis 3,

  1536. the one who would

  1537. bruise the serpent,

1538. his heel would be bruised.

  1539. He would suffer

  1540. in the process.

  1541. But a suffering

  1542. is for us.

  1543. And that is what

  1544. Jesus did.

  1545. He got a body,

  1546. he lived our life

  1547. and then

  1548. well,

1549. he hung on the cross.

  1550. First of all,

  1551. so much shame,

  1552. right?

  1553. Hanging up naked

  1554. for everyone to see.

  1555. So much shame.

  1556. Well,

1557. to deal with our shame.

1558. And then all the pain

  1559. and all the damage

  1560. and the death

  1561. that we deserve

  1562. he took on himself

  1563. so that we

  1564. can be set free.

  1565. Of course,

1566. it means you can go

  1567. to Jesus now.

  1568. He knows about suffering.

  1569. He knows about pain.

  1570. He understands that

1571. because he went through it.

1572. You can always come to him.

  1573. But his suffering

  1574. was so much more,

  1575. right?

1576. It was in our place.

  1577. It saved us.

  1578. So look at Jesus'

  1579. broken body.

1580. See his love for you

  1581. and know that

1582. there will be an end

  1583. to our suffering,

  1584. our brokenness.

  1585. So later,

  1586. when you take

  1587. the Lord's Supper,

  1588. yeah,

1589. take it in like that,

  1590. right?

  1591. Jesus,

  1592. thank you for,

  1593. yeah,

  1594. I have a broken body.

1595. I need your broken body.

1596. I need you to die for me.

1597. Thank you that you did that.

  1598. Thank you

1599. that I can be free.

  1600. Please raise me

  1601. from the dead.

  1602. Let's take it

  1603. in that way.

  1604. Okay.
