  1. I'm going to read now a portion of 2 Corinthians chapter 9.

    2 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  2. ! I'll pick up reading from verse 6 and then read to the end of the chapter, verse 15.

  3. So 2 Corinthians 9, this is page 1164 if you have one of the Red Church Bibles.

  4. Remember this, whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly.

  5. And whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

  6. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,

  7. not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

  8. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things, at all times,

  9. having all you need, you will abound in every good work.

  10. As it is written, they have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever.

  11. Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed,

  12. and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

  13. You will be enriched in every way, so that you can be generous on every occasion.

  14. And through us, your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

  15. This service you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord's people,

  16. but it is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

  17. And through the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience

  18. that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing

  19. with them and with everyone else.

  20. And in their prayers for you, their hearts will go out to you because of the surpassing grace

  21. God has given you.

  22. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.

  23. Amen.

  24. This morning I noticed the fact that love seems to be the thread which binds the Bible together.

  25. So too, this word that we see both in chapter 8 and chapter 9 of 2 Corinthians is a key link throughout the Bible.

  26. 2 Corinthians 8 verse 9 and 2 Corinthians 9 verse 8, these are the two texts that I'm going to be focusing on.

    2 Corinthians 8:9 2 Corinthians 9:8

  27. And in my memory, I find it easy to remember both of them just because of the reversal of the numbers.

    Numbers 8:9

  28. 8 verse 9 and 9 verse 8.

  29. Chapter 8 verse 9, for you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich,

  30. yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

  31. And then 2 Corinthians 9 verse 8, and God is able to bless you abundantly, or God is able to make all grace abound to you.

    2 Corinthians 9:8

  32. It captures the same theme and the same word, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need,

  33. you will abound in every good work.

  34. You see, grace is very difficult to illustrate because it's so unique to God that it's difficult to explain what it looks like apart from what God himself says.

  35. Yesterday, I was at a wedding, Kirstie Ann McPherson and Tom Cox, and the ring bearer was a small child.

  36. Now, I've done a lot of weddings, and I've had dogs as ring bearers, I've had small children as ring bearers.

  37. As a rule, dogs are more reliable, they're more likely to get the ring to the right place at the right time,

  38. but it became quite clear that there was an agreement between the groom and the ring bearer.

  39. The groom had a packet of stickers in his pocket, and he made it quite clear to his nephew that should the ring be delivered at the appropriate time,

  40. in the appropriate way, that he would exchange the stickers for the ring, and it worked a treat.

  41. Because at the right time I asked for the rings to be given, young Tommy came forward with the rings,

  42. and with a handout for the stickers.

  43. A quid pro quo.

  44. But that's not what grace is like.

  45. You see, we're used to things like that where you do something and you get something.

  46. You give something and you receive something.

  47. So, every month, the Free Church of Scotland generously puts money into my bank account.

  48. But that's not grace.

  49. That's my salary.

  50. I do something in return for my salary.

  51. So, when it comes to illustrating grace, it's really difficult because all of the illustrations that we might think of don't really capture it.

  52. You see, when we think about God and his nature, he is so different than we are.

  53. You see, God, for example, is inexhaustible.

  54. You know, you and I, we expend energy and we get tired.

  55. God expends energy and he never gets tired.

  56. God's resources are inexhaustible.

  57. You see, if I give you 10 pounds, you're 10 pounds richer, but I'm 10 pounds poorer.

  58. God expends resources, but he's never impoverished.

  59. I can't explain that.

  60. I can tell you that it's true, but I can't explain it how it's true.

  61. Because every idea that I have is that if you give something, that means you no longer have it.

  62. Whereas God gives and gives and gives and never has less.

  63. God works and works and works and is never tired.

  64. And we come to this text.

  65. And before we get to the two texts that I've highlighted, let me just give you a little bit of the flavor or a little bit of the context.

  66. Because the context is quite remarkable.

  67. You see, Paul is writing to the church in Corinth.

  68. And the church in Corinth has a lot going for it.

  69. It's in a strategic place.

  70. It's in a place where there's a kind of a crossroads, a trading crossroads.

  71. It's quite a prosperous city.

  72. And it's also a place where the gospel shines brightly.

  73. Because the spirit of the age and the culture is so contrary to the gospel.

  74. It's a place where immorality is high.

  75. It's a place where spiritual light seems to be in short supply.

  76. And yet the gospel takes root in Corinth.

  77. It's kind of like that song of New York.

  78. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

  79. If the gospel can take root in Corinth, it just can take root absolutely anywhere.

  80. But you see, the Corinthians, they may have had resources.

  81. They were, generally speaking, a more affluent church than some others.

  82. But you see, these were the kind of folks that would quickly make promises but not fulfill them.

  83. They would make commitments quickly but find it difficult to keep those commitments.

  84. And Paul, in chapter 8, at the beginning, he says,

  85. And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches.

  86. Grace.

  87. Undeserved favor.

  88. Unmerited love.

  89. Again, it takes several words to describe this one word.

  90. The grace that God has given.

  91. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.

  92. Paul says, let me tell you a story.

  93. Let me tell you a true story.

  94. They're the most interesting ones.

  95. Let me tell you a story, Corinthian Christians.

  96. Let me tell you about a poor group of people who, by the grace of God, became generous.

  97. And you think, that doesn't really make sense.

  98. Poor people don't have stuff.

  99. So therefore, poor people can't give stuff.

  100. Well, yes and no.

  101. Humanly speaking, yes.

  102. But when God enters a situation, God has a way of doing impossible things in impossible situations.

  103. And God has a way of transforming people.

  104. He says, for I testify that they gave as much as they were able and even beyond their ability entirely on their own.

  105. So Paul is teaching a lesson about giving.

  106. That's the practical lesson here.

  107. But he's teaching an even more profound lesson about grace.

  108. This is what the grace of Jesus looks like.

  109. And that's where he brings his argument to its kind of crescendo in verse 9.

  110. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  111. You see, Jesus Christ is full of grace.

  112. Full of grace and truth.

  113. As we heard this morning in John chapter 1, verse 17.

    John 1:17

  114. He is full of grace.

  115. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  116. That though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor.

  117. The apostle Paul never gave us an account of the birth of Jesus.

  118. We see that in Matthew.

  119. And we see that in Luke.

  120. So we don't have the Bethlehem story captured for us by Paul.

  121. And yet we do have Paul here reflecting on the reality of the incarnation.

  122. God is in heaven.

  123. And now God in the person of Jesus Christ comes down.

  124. And he dwells on earth.

  125. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  126. That though he was rich.

  127. Rich in glory.

  128. Rich in heaven.

  129. Right hand of the majesty on high.

  130. All power.

  131. All authority.

  132. All wisdom.

  133. All honor.

  134. Was his.

  135. By right.

  136. But what did he do?

  137. For your sake he became poor.

  138. So the grace of Jesus is the rich one becomes poor.

  139. Why?

  140. So that the poor ones become rich.

  141. So that through his poverty you might become rich.

  142. This is what the gospel of Jesus looks like.

  143. The one with all power.

  144. With all authority.

  145. The one with all majesty.

  146. With all might.

  147. With all glory.

  148. And with all honor.

  149. Takes a position.

  150. A humble place.

  151. You see that's why Jesus often preached that theme.

  152. Remember?

  153. He says those who humble themselves will be exalted.

  154. And those who exalt themselves will be humbled.

  155. You see Jesus practices what he preaches perfectly.

  156. Every other preacher is inconsistent.

  157. But this preacher is perfectly consistent.

  158. He preaches about humility.

  159. Being humble.

  160. And he does exactly that.

  161. He takes a position of humility.

  162. Why?

  163. So that others might be exalted.

  164. Others might be raised.

  165. He comes down so that we can go up.

  166. And you see this is why it's so difficult to illustrate.

  167. Because this is not the way things are.

  168. This is not the way we tend to think of things.

  169. We kind of love those rags to riches stories.

  170. Poverty.

  171. Difficulty.

  172. Challenge.

  173. So the man or the woman is in these difficult situations.

  174. And all of a sudden they persevere.

  175. They get an education.

  176. They find an idea.

  177. They start a business.

  178. And all of a sudden they once were in the slums.

  179. They're now in the palace.

  180. But the gospel is the exact opposite.

  181. This is not a story of upward mobility.

  182. This is a story of downward mobility.

  183. But it's deliberate.

  184. That he becomes poor.

  185. So that we as a people might become rich.

  186. So you see when Paul is teaching a lesson.

  187. He's teaching a lesson.

  188. A theological lesson.

  189. With a practical outcome.

  190. And the foundation is none other than Jesus.

  191. So you see when we want to know what it looks like to live the Christian life.

  192. We look to him.

  193. He's our example.

  194. He's our motivation.

  195. He's the foundation.

  196. He is the object of our desire as a pupil.

  197. He's the teacher.

  198. We're the pupils.

  199. We want to look more and more like him.

  200. He took a humble place.

  201. Why?

  202. Because he had a care for others.

  203. And what he did, he did uniquely.

  204. We can't repeat that.

  205. And yet there's a model here.

  206. He becomes a model for Christian living.

  207. He becomes a model of Christian discipleship.

  208. Jesus became poor.

  209. So that the poor could become rich.

  210. So the Macedonian Christians are poor.

  211. For example, Philippi is a city in Macedon.

  212. If you know your ancient history, Philip of Macedon.

  213. The father of Alexander the Great.

  214. So a lot of cities are named after Philip.

  215. And at the end of chapter 4 in Philippians, Paul said this.

  216. He said,

  217. It was good of you to share in my troubles.

  218. Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel,

  219. when I set out from Macedonia, Macedonian church,

  220. not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only.

  221. For even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.

  222. Not that I desire your gifts.

  223. What I desire is more be credited to your account.

  224. Strange, isn't it?

  225. The Macedonian churches gave to Paul.

  226. That means they had less.

  227. And Paul says,

  228. Actually, no.

  229. That means you have more.

  230. You know, I used to be an accountant.

  231. Most ministers,

  232. Alec MacDonald accepted,

  233. most ministers become ministers because they're not able to do much else.

  234. Right?

  235. So I wasn't that good at accountancy.

  236. But I understand debits and I understand credits.

  237. Debits is what you don't have.

  238. Credits is what you do.

  239. And Paul is saying,

  240. What you've given,

  241. which is a debit,

  242. is actually now a credit.

  243. So you see,

  244. there's an economy here of grace,

  245. which is difficult to explain

  246. because it goes against standard accounting procedure.

  247. He says,

  248. Not that I desire,

  249. but what I desire is that more be credited to your account.

  250. I have received full payment

  251. and have more than enough.

  252. I am amply supplied

  253. now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent.

  254. They are a fragrant offering,

  255. an acceptable sacrifice,

  256. pleasing to God.

  257. And my God will meet all your needs

  258. according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

  259. So Paul says,

  260. I want to say thank you.

  261. Thank you for your generosity.

  262. Thank you for your gifts.

  263. But these gifts actually are a credit to you.

  264. And they're a credit in that now,

  265. you can write a check

  266. against the bank of Jesus Christ.

  267. And you see,

  268. the bank of Jesus Christ has an infinite balance.

  269. It never decreases.

  270. It's never at risk.

  271. Economic crisis,

  272. tariffs of one sort or another,

  273. there's no danger here.

  274. So Paul says,

  275. I want to thank you for your generosity.

  276. Not that I needed it,

  277. but your generosity actually now becomes a credit to your account.

  278. And he says,

  279. my God will meet all your needs

  280. according to the riches of glory in Christ Jesus.

  281. I wasn't able to get there yesterday,

  282. but yesterday was an open day at the Leith Church,

  283. the new Hope Church,

  284. Leith,

  285. Castle Bank Street.

  286. Derek and Katrina are the oldest church planters

  287. in the free church in their 60s.

  288. And it was an open day to see this newly refurbished church.

  289. It's light,

  290. it's bright,

  291. it looks new,

  292. it's exciting.

  293. But one thing I'm often reminded of

  294. when I'm in Derek's company

  295. is that Derek often repeats this phrase.

  296. He says,

  297. God is no man's debtor.

  298. God has a way of giving back

  299. in a way that is completely out of proportion

  300. to whatever might be given.

  301. Spurgeon captured this 150 years ago.

  302. He said,

  303. in all my years of service to my Lord,

  304. I have discovered a truth

  305. that has never failed

  306. and has never been compromised.

  307. That truth is that it is beyond the realm of possibilities

  308. that one has the ability to outgive God.

  309. Even if I give the whole of my worth to him,

  310. he will find a way to give back to me

  311. much more than I gave.

  312. So grace,

  313. the economy of grace,

  314. the accountancy of grace,

  315. grace doesn't seem to make sense,

  316. doesn't seem to fit with our understanding

  317. of credits and debits.

  318. But God has a way

  319. of taking whatever might be given

  320. and multiplying it to the giver.

  321. Not just to the receiver,

  322. but to the giver.

  323. So you see,

  324. if we grasp the gospel,

  325. the incarnation of Jesus

  326. is the rich one became poor.

  327. Why?

  328. So that the poor ones might become rich.

  329. He in heaven now dwells on earth,

  330. lives a life characterized by poverty.

  331. He had nowhere to lay his head.

  332. Almost immediately,

  333. he was a political refugee.

  334. He was fleeing with his family.

  335. They had to go to Egypt

  336. because it was dangerous

  337. to stay in Judea.

  338. So the one who had everything

  339. had nothing

  340. in order that we,

  341. spiritually speaking,

  342. who have nothing

  343. might have everything.

  344. So the grace of Jesus Christ

  345. is the foundation

  346. for all generosity,

  347. all giving,

  348. all Christian service.

  349. He is the model.

  350. He is the exemplar.

  351. He is the goal of,

  352. or he is the object

  353. of our focus here.

  354. But in the next chapter,

  355. Paul goes on to describe

  356. not just the grace of Jesus Christ,

  357. but the grace of the people

  358. of Jesus Christ.

  359. You see this in verse eight.

  360. And God is able

  361. to bless you abundantly

  362. or to make all grace abound

  363. so that in all things

  364. at all times,

  365. having all that you need,

  366. you will abound

  367. in every good work.

  368. There are five alls there.

  369. Five everys there.

  370. This is Paul saying

  371. to the people of Corinth,

  372. if you think that giving

  373. makes you poorer,

  374. if you think that expending resources

  375. impoverishes you,

  376. Paul says,

  377. I want to tell you

  378. something different.

  379. When you give,

  380. you receive.

  381. And when you give,

  382. you receive in such a way

  383. as to make the giving

  384. completely out of proportion.

  385. Billy Graham,

  386. the American evangelist,

  387. put it this way.

  388. He said,

  389. God has given us two hands.

  390. One is the hand

  391. that we receive

  392. and the other

  393. is the hand that we give.

  394. The gospel is a gift

  395. that must first be received.

  396. And we receive the gift

  397. of God by faith,

  398. with gratitude

  399. and with thanksgiving.

  400. And we then give

  401. with the other hand.

  402. He says,

  403. we are not cisterns

  404. made for hoarding,

  405. but we are channels

  406. meant for sharing.

  407. And that's the argument

  408. that Paul is making here.

  409. He says,

  410. here's the grace

  411. of Jesus Christ

  412. and here's the grace

  413. of Jesus' people.

  414. And it's the same measure.

  415. The poor,

  416. the rich one becomes poor,

  417. the poor become rich,

  418. and those that give

  419. have a blessing

  420. and have abundance

  421. that's completely

  422. out of proportion

  423. to what they themselves

  424. have given.

  425. John Wesley

  426. kind of paraphrased

  427. this verse.

  428. He says,

  429. do all the good you can,

  430. by all the means you can,

  431. in all the ways you can,

  432. in all the places you can,

  433. at all the times you can,

  434. to all the people you can,

  435. as long as ever you can.

  436. All grace abounds

  437. so that all things,

  438. all times,

  439. having all that you need,

  440. you will abound

  441. in every good work.

  442. You see,

  443. as followers

  444. of Martin Luther

  445. and the Protestant Reformation,

  446. when we look at the phrase

  447. good work,

  448. we are often inclined

  449. to say,

  450. good works do not save.

  451. And that's true.

  452. And the Bible makes it

  453. quite clear

  454. that good works

  455. do not save us.

  456. We are not saved

  457. by what we do,

  458. we are saved

  459. by what Jesus does.

  460. But most of the time

  461. that we see this phrase

  462. good work,

  463. it's not negative,

  464. as in this doesn't save,

  465. but it's seen positively

  466. as this is what

  467. the outcome of

  468. a saved life looks like.

  469. Good work.

  470. kindness,

  471. generosity,

  472. thoughtfulness,

  473. care,

  474. compassion,

  475. not to be saved,

  476. but because we are

  477. already saved.

  478. We have already

  479. been set free.

  480. So the grace

  481. of Jesus Christ

  482. prompts gratitude

  483. and generosity

  484. in the people

  485. of Jesus Christ.

  486. John Wesley

  487. practiced what he preached.

  488. He once said,

  489. it's not how much

  490. of my money

  491. will I give to God,

  492. but how much

  493. of God's money

  494. will I keep

  495. for myself?

  496. Through his writings

  497. and through his sermons,

  498. it was big business

  499. then.

  500. These,

  501. George Whitefield,

  502. John Wesley,

  503. Latterley,

  504. D.L.

  505. Moody,

  506. Sankey,

  507. publishers

  508. made a lot

  509. of money

  510. by publishing

  511. reminiscences,

  512. biographies,

  513. autobiographies,

  514. and it was

  515. estimated that

  516. during his life

  517. Wesley earned

  518. 30,000 pounds

  519. through his writings,

  520. which exceeds

  521. five million pounds

  522. today.

  523. And when he died,

  524. the only possessions

  525. he had,

  526. he had a few coins

  527. in his pocket

  528. and a few coins

  529. on his dresser.

  530. So he gave away

  531. all that he ever earned.

  532. He gave away

  533. all that he ever received.

  534. He lived on approximately

  535. 30 pounds a week,

  536. having earned

  537. 30,000

  538. during the course

  539. of his life.

  540. Do all the good

  541. you can.

  542. You see,

  543. as I stand here today,

  544. I'm very much aware

  545. of the passage of time.

  546. Came to this country

  547. at age 23,

  548. I'm now 58.

  549. If I live

  550. another 35 years,

  551. I would be 83.

  552. That may or may not happen,

  553. but time just goes

  554. so quickly.

  555. The opportunities

  556. that we have

  557. for service,

  558. the opportunities

  559. that we have

  560. for witness,

  561. the opportunities

  562. that we have

  563. to demonstrate

  564. the goodness

  565. and grace

  566. that we have received

  567. quickly pass away.

  568. You see,

  569. it's not so much

  570. what we receive

  571. or what we have

  572. at the end of the day,

  573. but what have we done

  574. with what we've received?

  575. What have we done

  576. with the gifts?

  577. What have we done

  578. with the talents?

  579. What have we done

  580. with the time?

  581. what have we done

  582. with our resources?

  583. It so happened

  584. that the Corinthian church

  585. was blessed

  586. in terms of

  587. practical or financial resources.

  588. And they had a desire.

  589. They made that desire

  590. known that they wanted

  591. to give.

  592. They were one of the first

  593. to sign up

  594. for this contribution

  595. for the needs

  596. of God's people.

  597. Paul had to remind them

  598. that the offer

  599. was great,

  600. but actually

  601. the reality

  602. was even better.

  603. Offering and doing

  604. can be two very

  605. different things.

  606. There's a time coming,

  607. as Jesus said,

  608. night comes

  609. when no one can work.

  610. It's still daytime.

  611. We still have time.

  612. We still have resources.

  613. So the people of God

  614. are encouraged

  615. to serve,

  616. to give,

  617. to speak.

  618. Whatever your gifts,

  619. whatever the talents

  620. God has instructed you with,

  621. he wants you to know

  622. that he is able.

  623. Not that you're able,

  624. but he's able.

  625. You see,

  626. it's all of grace.

  627. It's not what we do

  628. for God,

  629. but it's what God

  630. does for us,

  631. and then what God

  632. does in us,

  633. and what God

  634. does through us.

  635. God is able

  636. to bless you abundantly,

  637. to make all grace abound,

  638. so that in all things,

  639. at all times,

  640. having all that you need,

  641. you will abound

  642. in every good work.

  643. We live in an age

  644. of skepticism.

  645. We live in an age

  646. of doubt.

  647. People are not certain

  648. that the Bible

  649. is the word of God.

  650. People are not necessarily

  651. all that interested

  652. in who Jesus is

  653. or what Jesus did,

  654. whether he was

  655. a real person,

  656. whether the actions

  657. or the miracles

  658. were genuine,

  659. but something

  660. is powerful,

  661. and I think today,

  662. more than ever,

  663. when people see

  664. lives that have

  665. been changed,

  666. hearts that have

  667. been transformed,

  668. priorities that have

  669. been turned upside down,

  670. they cannot but help

  671. seeing the reality

  672. of the gospel

  673. in the lives

  674. of the people of God.

  675. By all means,

  676. we invite people

  677. to come to church,

  678. we invite people

  679. to come to Christianity

  680. Explored,

  681. but I think the great

  682. challenge and the great

  683. opportunity that we have

  684. is wherever we go,

  685. where you work,

  686. where you study,

  687. where you live,

  688. wherever God places you,

  689. that we bring the gospel

  690. with us.

  691. We bring the gospel

  692. with us in word,

  693. and we bring the gospel

  694. with us in action.

  695. Words are important.

  696. God loves you.

  697. Jesus Christ died

  698. to forgive sin.

  699. Jesus came into this world

  700. to seek and to save

  701. the lost.

  702. These words are

  703. incredibly important,

  704. but when those words

  705. are accompanied

  706. with action,

  707. when those words

  708. are demonstrated

  709. by the quality

  710. of a life

  711. changed and transformed,

  712. watch out.

  713. Watch out what God

  714. can do.

  715. Watch out how God

  716. can use you.

  717. You might think

  718. that your gifts are few.

  719. You might think

  720. that your resources

  721. are limited.

  722. You might think

  723. that your talents

  724. are not many,

  725. but when God works

  726. in you,

  727. by his grace,

  728. he works through you

  729. by that same grace

  730. and by that same power,

  731. and he can use

  732. the small gifts

  733. with which we have

  734. been entrusted

  735. to demonstrate

  736. his great power,

  737. his great mercy,

  738. his great capacity.

  739. We can take

  740. the opportunity

  741. that we have.

  742. Each one of us

  743. has opportunities

  744. that are unique.

  745. Opportunities to speak,

  746. opportunities to serve,

  747. and opportunities

  748. to give.

  749. And when we take

  750. God at his word,

  751. we have every guarantee

  752. that he indeed

  753. is able

  754. to make

  755. all grace

  756. abound.

  757. He,

  758. when he says,

  759. when Paul says,

  760. my God will meet

  761. all your needs

  762. according to the riches

  763. of his glory

  764. in Christ.

  765. Whatever your need,

  766. whatever your lack,

  767. whatever you are

  768. requiring,

  769. God is able

  770. to provide,

  771. and God is able

  772. to work in such a way

  773. that it's beyond

  774. illustration.

  775. It's not what you can do,

  776. it's not what you can,

  777. how you,

  778. God gives

  779. and you give back,

  780. it's not like that.

  781. It's the grace of God

  782. at work in the hearts

  783. of people

  784. that multiply

  785. the work.

  786. Whatever we might

  787. give in his service

  788. is so small,

  789. but he can multiply

  790. those small gifts,

  791. he can multiply

  792. those words

  793. in such a way

  794. to demonstrate

  795. his power

  796. and his grace

  797. and his glory.

  798. If we take him

  799. at his word,

  800. the grace of Jesus Christ

  801. and the grace

  802. of the people

  803. of Jesus Christ,

  804. you put those together

  805. and watch

  806. and wait

  807. to see what God

  808. can do in us

  809. and what God

  810. can do through us

  811. because I'm convinced

  812. that we are here

  813. in this place

  814. at this time

  815. for a reason.

  816. Just as there were

  817. believers in Corinth

  818. in the first century A.D.,

  819. an unlikely place

  820. for an unlikely setting,

  821. the people of God

  822. were gathered there.

  823. Paul wanted

  824. to encourage them

  825. to practice

  826. the generosity

  827. of grace,

  828. the grace received,

  829. the grace given,

  830. to demonstrate

  831. the reality

  832. of Jesus in Corinth.

  833. Let's demonstrate

  834. the reality of Jesus

  835. on the south side

  836. of Edinburgh,

  837. in this city,

  838. among these people,

  839. a people skeptical,

  840. a people who doubt,

  841. a people who do not

  842. read the Bible

  843. but who see us

  844. as the people of Jesus.

  845. Let us be credible witnesses

  846. to the grace of God,

  847. a grace received

  848. and a grace shared

  849. and a generous people

  850. will be a people

  851. that will know

  852. the blessing of God

  853. and whatever might be expended

  854. will be returned

  855. manyfold.

  856. that's the grace

  857. of Jesus Christ

  858. and that's the power

  859. of the gospel

  860. and may he richly

  861. and abundantly

  862. bless us

  863. and make us

  864. a blessing

  865. in the lives of others.

  866. Let's pray.

  867. Father in heaven,

  868. we come to you

  869. in that precious,

  870. powerful name of Jesus.

  871. We recognize

  872. that he had everything

  873. and he placed himself

  874. here on earth.

  875. He gave up

  876. all of his privilege.

  877. He gave up all

  878. of his riches

  879. in order to make

  880. a poor people rich.

  881. We thank you

  882. that in his humility

  883. we have been exalted

  884. and he is now exalted

  885. to that place

  886. of ultimate honor

  887. and glory

  888. at your right hand

  889. and as we come

  890. to you in his name

  891. we come in the name

  892. in that powerful name

  893. of Jesus

  894. asking that you might do

  895. as you have promised

  896. that you might make us

  897. vessels in your hand

  898. that we might be used

  899. by you

  900. that you might work

  901. in us and through us

  902. and that the grace

  903. of Jesus

  904. might be demonstrated

  905. in the words

  906. that we speak

  907. in the lives

  908. that we give

  909. and in the actions

  910. of our hands

  911. that you might indeed

  912. make all grace abound

  913. and these things

  914. we pray

  915. in the precious name

  916. of Jesus.
