  1. Today's scripture reading is from the 1st Corinthians chapter 15 verses 29 to 58.

  2. Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead?

  3. If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?

  4. Why are we in danger every hour?

  5. I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  6. I died every day.

  7. What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus?

  8. If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.

  9. Do not be deceived.

  10. Bad company ruins good morals.

  11. Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning.

  12. For some have no knowledge of God.

  13. God, I say this to your shame.

  14. But someone will ask, how are the dead raised?

  15. With what kind of body do they come?

  16. You foolish person.

  17. What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.

  18. What you sow is not the body that is to be,

  19. but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain.

  20. But God gives it a body as he has chosen,

  21. and to each kind of seed its own body.

  22. For not all flesh is the same,

  23. but there is one kind for humans,

  24. another for animals,

  25. another for birds,

  26. and another for fish.

  27. There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies,

  28. but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind,

  29. and the glory of the earthly is of another.

  30. There is one glory of the sun,

  31. and another glory of the moon,

  32. and another glory of the stars.

  33. For star differs from star in glory.

  34. So is it with the resurrection of the dead.

  35. What is sown is perishable.

  36. What is raised is imperishable.

  37. It is sown in dishonor.

  38. It is raised in glory.

  39. It is sown in weakness.

  40. It is raised in power.

  41. It is sown a natural body.

  42. It is raised a spiritual body.

  43. If there is a natural body,

  44. there is also a spiritual body.

  45. Thus it is written,

  46. the first man, Adam, became a living being.

  47. The last, Adam, became a life-giving spirit.

  48. But it is not the spirit that is first,

  49. but the natural,

  50. and then the spiritual.

  51. The first man was from the earth,

  52. a man of dust.

  53. The second man is from heaven.

  54. As was the man of dust,

  55. so also are those who are of the dust.

  56. And as is the man of heaven,

  57. so also are those who are of heaven.

  58. Just as we were born the image of the man of dust,

  59. we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.

  60. I tell you this, brothers.

  61. Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,

  62. nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

  63. Behold, I tell you a mystery.

  64. We shall not all sleep,

  65. but we shall all be changed.

  66. In a moment,

  67. in the twinkling of an eye,

  68. at the last trumpet.

  69. For the trumpet will sound,

  70. and the dead will be raised,

  71. imperishable.

  72. And we shall be changed.

  73. For this perishable body

  74. must put on the imperishable,

  75. and this mortal body

  76. must put on immortality.

  77. When the perishable puts on the imperishable,

  78. and the mortal puts on immortality,

  79. then shall come to pass

  80. the saying that is written,

  81. Death is swallowed up in victory.

  82. O death, where is your victory?

  83. O death, where is your sting?

  84. The sting of death is sin,

  85. and the power of sin is the law.

  86. And thanks be to God,

  87. who gives us the victory

  88. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  89. Therefore, my beloved brothers,

  90. be steadfast, immovable,

  91. always abounding in the work of the Lord,

  92. knowing that in the Lord

  93. your labor is not in vain.

  94. This is the word of God.

  95. Amen.

  96. Amen.

  97. Great.

  98. Thank you, Yidi, for praying.

  99. Margo, for reading.

  100. We're going to look at this passage.

  101. It's actually part of a topical series,

  102. but yeah, it's a great passage.

  103. And so, let's pray

  104. that God would speak to each one of us.

  105. Our Father, thank you for your word.

  106. Thank you that we are not in the dark

  107. about the future.

  108. You tell us what will be,

  109. and we pray that you would speak to our hearts,

  110. and it would change our lives.

  111. In Jesus' name.

  112. Amen.

  113. Great.

  114. So, I know it's a beautiful day.

  115. Let me start with a slightly different question.

  116. So, imagine you only had like five years to live.

  117. What kind of things would you be doing

  118. during those five years?

  119. Have a think about that.

  120. I don't know what kind of things you're thinking of.

  121. My guess is if you ask most people in the world,

  122. they would have a list of things

  123. that they would want to do, right?

  124. They would, I want to go to Paris.

  125. I want to ride a motorcycle.

  126. I want to go bungee jumping.

  127. I want to see the normal lights, take a cruise.

  128. Any of those kind of things, right?

  129. Because, you know, we want to make the most of life.

  130. These are amazing things that, you know, we should do.

  131. And if I only have five years, well, let me do them.

  132. People call it a bucket list

  133. from the expression to kick the bucket,

  134. which is to die.

  135. Now, some of you haven't probably thought about that

  136. because you're so young.

  137. I guess in your case, well,

  138. I think this is on social media, YOLO, right?

  139. YOLO, you only live once.

  140. Let's make the most of this life.

  141. Let's have big ice cream.

  142. Let's go bungee jumping.

  143. They're both the same thing, right?

  144. Whether you're old or young.

  145. The idea that we hear in the world is

  146. make the most of this life.

  147. There is so much good in the world.

  148. There's so much to enjoy.

  149. So many great experiences you can have.

  150. Well, let's do it.

  151. Because this is your life.

  152. Now, as Christians,

  153. I don't know how you feel about that.

  154. It kind of feels wrong.

  155. But at the same time,

  156. are you saying that those things are wrong?

  157. All right?

  158. No.

  159. I'm sure they are good things.

  160. How do we work with that?

  161. Well, that's what we're going to talk about today.

  162. Because this is a series on the human body,

  163. our physical bodies.

  164. What does God think about them?

  165. And we're basically going through the Bible story, right?

  166. It starts with creation

  167. and how God made our bodies.

  168. And so they're good.

  169. But then, yeah,

  170. we sinned and our bodies are now broken.

  171. Last week, well,

  172. we're now back with God

  173. so we can use our bodies for worship.

  174. But then, the future.

  175. You know, what will this mean?

  176. Yeah, what about our bodies and all eternity?

  177. Or in heaven, as Kevin just said.

  178. That's what we're going to talk about.

  179. And I think this is really important

  180. because the future does affect the present.

  181. And the reason we're,

  182. well, you've heard that we're reading from 1 Corinthians 15.

  183. And that chapter is really suitable

  184. because that was the Corinthians problem.

  185. They didn't think there was much after death.

  186. They didn't think there was a resurrection, right?

  187. Paul, in verse 12 of this chapter,

  188. he says,

  189. how can you say there's no resurrection from the dead?

  190. We're just saying,

  191. I believe in the resurrection, right?

  192. This is a core Christian belief

  193. and a lot of the Corinthians,

  194. they didn't believe it anymore.

  195. They just followed Greek philosophy

  196. where, you know,

  197. the body isn't very important.

  198. The future, well,

  199. we'll just be spirits floating around,

  200. something like that.

  201. That is the future we have.

  202. And, well,

  203. Paul wants to say,

  204. no, no, this is essential.

  205. And that's what,

  206. actually,

  207. it's exactly what we need to hear, right?

  208. We want to know about our bodies,

  209. about the future.

  210. Well,

  211. let's talk about the resurrection

  212. because that's when it's called,

  213. right?

  214. Being raised from the dead.

  215. And so,

  216. the big thing,

  217. first of all,

  218. that Paul wants to say,

  219. well, look,

  220. you will have resurrection bodies.

  221. We will have resurrection bodies,

  222. right?

  223. You heard in the reading,

  224. the body,

  225. the body,

  226. the body.

  227. We will have bodies.

  228. Clearly,

  229. God cares about bodies

  230. because we will have bodies

  231. for all eternity.

  232. And you will have a physical body.

  233. The future is physical.

  234. It is a new creation.

  235. This is very different

  236. from what many people think,

  237. right?

  238. I think I've said this before.

  239. Many people think

  240. eternity,

  241. heaven,

  242. is like,

  243. a bit like this,

  244. right?

  245. floating around

  246. in a white dress

  247. with a harp

  248. on a cloud,

  249. something like that.

  250. This is kind of eternity

  251. for most people.

  252. And I don't know about you.

  253. I don't think it's very exciting.

  254. But that is kind of

  255. what people think.

  256. Well,

  257. the answer is,

  258. actually,

  259. that is not our future.

  260. This is kind of

  261. the picture of heaven.

  262. But,

  263. you know what?

  264. You're going to heaven,

  265. but only for a short time.

  266. Heaven is only a waiting room.

  267. The real thing

  268. is when Jesus comes back

  269. and then he will make

  270. a new creation.

  271. He will take this creation

  272. and totally transform it.

  273. And he will give us

  274. our old bodies,

  275. whether they'll be

  276. completely transformed.

  277. We'll have new bodies,

  278. resurrection bodies.

  279. So the future is physical,

  280. right?

  281. We're going back

  282. to the Garden of Eden.

  283. God had this plan

  284. originally,

  285. and he's not going

  286. to change that.

  287. And back when God

  288. made humans,

  289. he gave them taste buds

  290. so that they could taste.

  291. Well,

  292. God wants us to be tasting

  293. in the new creation.

  294. He gave us ears

  295. to listen to music.

  296. He gave us eyes

  297. to see beauty,

  298. and he wants us

  299. to do that

  300. for all eternity

  301. because that was his plan.

  302. And he's not going

  303. to change his plan

  304. with a kind of plan B

  305. of floating spirits.

  306. No,

  307. you will have

  308. a physical body.

  309. I think this is,

  310. you know,

  311. that answers kind of

  312. what we feel,

  313. right?

  314. Because maybe,

  315. I don't know,

  316. maybe you're here,

  317. you're not a visitor.

  318. So you're a visitor,

  319. you're not a Christian,

  320. you look at

  321. different religions,

  322. and you see the world,

  323. and there's good things

  324. and bad things.

  325. And many religions,

  326. they kind of,

  327. they discard the world.

  328. And, you know,

  329. you have this kind of

  330. spiritual nirvana

  331. or whatever.

  332. But then how about

  333. the good things

  334. in the world?

  335. Now,

  336. Christianity says,

  337. no,

  338. the world is good.

  339. We just need to get rid

  340. of the bad things

  341. and renew it.

  342. And God says,

  343. the world is good.

  344. Bodies are good,

  345. and you will have them

  346. for all eternity.

  347. But not just the body

  348. we have now,

  349. actually,

  350. a better body.

  351. Because a lot of this passage

  352. was about this objection

  353. in verse 35,

  354. right?

  355. But someone will ask,

  356. how were the dead raised?

  357. What kind of body

  358. do they come?

  359. With what kind of body?

  360. Because if you don't think

  361. much of the body,

  362. and you get to hear,

  363. well,

  364. you're going to have a body

  365. for all eternity,

  366. maybe that's not

  367. that exciting,

  368. right?

  369. Because bodies,

  370. they hurt,

  371. and they break,

  372. and they get old,

  373. and they get fat,

  374. and you just think,

  375. why would I want a body

  376. for all eternity?

  377. And so Paul says,

  378. no,

  379. no,

  380. no,

  381. you fool.

  382. You'll get a better body.

  383. It's a transformed body.

  384. It's like,

  385. well,

  386. verse 37,

  387. you know,

  388. what you sow

  389. is not a body

  390. that is to be,

  391. but a bare seed,

  392. perhaps of wheat

  393. or of some other grain.

  394. It's going to be

  395. a transformed body.

  396. And so,

  397. I have here

  398. an apple seed.

  399. Most of you can't see it.

  400. I had an apple this morning.

  401. If I put this in the ground,

  402. I don't get an apple seed

  403. out of it.

  404. What do I get?

  405. Well,

  406. I get like an apple tree,

  407. beautiful,

  408. full of apples.

  409. I get something,

  410. I mean,

  411. it's the same thing,

  412. but it's not,

  413. right?

  414. It's transformed.

  415. It's far better.

  416. Well,

  417. Paul says,

  418. that is what your body will be,

  419. right?

  420. When you die,

  421. you get planted in the ground,

  422. right?

  423. And then,

  424. what comes out

  425. isn't just the same old you.

  426. It is a better,

  427. transformed you,

  428. right?

  429. So,

  430. we get all these adjectives.

  431. Verse 42,

  432. right?

  433. This is the resurrection of the dead.

  434. What is sown is perishable.

  435. What is raised is imperishable.

  436. It is sown in dishonor.

  437. It is raised in glory.

  438. It's sown in weakness.

  439. It's raised in power.

  440. It's sown in natural body.

  441. It's raised in spiritual body.

  442. That doesn't mean physical versus spiritual.

  443. It means a kind of,

  444. you know,

  445. just natural power versus spirit and powers,

  446. something like that.

  447. It doesn't mean non-physical,

  448. but better,

  449. right?

  450. You know,

  451. Adam and Christ.

  452. Adam was made of the dust.

  453. Christ is from heaven,

  454. right?

  455. It's going to be better.

  456. You're going to be,

  457. yeah,

  458. your body will be better.

  459. It's beyond the Garden of Eden.

  460. I think the best illustration is Jesus himself,

  461. right?

  462. Jesus is our prototype.

  463. He has a resurrection body.

  464. Now,

  465. he looked like Jesus.

  466. It was physical.

  467. He could eat and fish and drink and those kind of things.

  468. It was recognizably Jesus,

  469. but also he could teleport and walk through walls,

  470. right?

  471. It's a,

  472. he had a better body.

  473. Well,

  474. it's the same for us.

  475. We will have a better body.

  476. Now,

  477. how will it be better?

  478. We don't really know all the details.

  479. I mean,

  480. a big thing we know,

  481. no more sin,

  482. right?

  483. Our bodies are now full of sin.

  484. That will all be gone.

  485. And there will be no more sluggishness when trying to obey God.

  486. There's no,

  487. nothing holding you back,

  488. right?

  489. We will be perfectly glorifying God with our lives.

  490. That is a big thing.

  491. No more brokenness.

  492. All the things from two weeks ago,

  493. the damage and disease and defects and decay,

  494. nothing of that.

  495. Of course,

  496. we'll still have some limitations.

  497. We're creatures,

  498. but some other limitations will be gone.

  499. Something like that,

  500. right?

  501. Of course,

  502. we don't know.

  503. How old will I look?

  504. No idea.

  505. If I jump off the building,

  506. will I die or will I just not,

  507. I won't die,

  508. but,

  509. you know,

  510. or will I just not jump off buildings?

  511. I have no idea.

  512. But,

  513. here's the idea.

  514. We can just trust God,

  515. but you will have a better body.

  516. You know,

  517. more,

  518. you'll be more alive now,

  519. than,

  520. than now.

  521. It will be more real than now.

  522. Right?

  523. So,

  524. maybe you like hiking here.

  525. How about hiking in a transformed body in the new creation?

  526. Maybe you like music.

  527. How about playing music with a transformed body in the new creation,

  528. with transformed ears?

  529. Right?

  530. The idea is,

  531. it's going to be so much better.

  532. And you have an amazing future to look forward to.

  533. And it's a great hope.

  534. And if any of you here are currently struggling with the brokenness of this world,

  535. of our bodies,

  536. maybe of family members that you need to care for,

  537. what a hope.

  538. Right?

  539. You know,

  540. two weeks ago,

  541. I said,

  542. hey,

  543. it's temporary.

  544. Well,

  545. here it is.

  546. It is,

  547. that is temporary,

  548. because we have this great future.

  549. One day,

  550. a new body,

  551. no more sin,

  552. no more pain,

  553. no more death.

  554. God will make everything right.

  555. That's our,

  556. a great hope.

  557. And,

  558. and even if you're not struggling at the moment,

  559. even if life is great,

  560. this should be exciting.

  561. This should be,

  562. you know,

  563. sometimes you think,

  564. oh,

  565. life is hard.

  566. Jesus,

  567. please come back.

  568. You know,

  569. you should want Jesus to come back on your wedding day.

  570. I know,

  571. but imagine you're,

  572. you're getting married,

  573. right?

  574. Saying you've been dating for years,

  575. and then you're planning the wedding,

  576. and,

  577. uh,

  578. everything is ready,

  579. and it's the great day,

  580. and,

  581. the bride is walking down the aisle,

  582. and then,

  583. Jesus is here.

  584. What would you say?

  585. Amen,

  586. Jesus,

  587. what,

  588. could you come one day later?

  589. What?

  590. No,

  591. we should think,

  592. wow,

  593. this is better than getting married,

  594. right?

  595. Jesus is coming back,

  596. the resurrection.

  597. It's,

  598. it's a,

  599. it's,

  600. it's not just another life,

  601. it's a better,

  602. everlasting life,

  603. and,

  604. and that's what,

  605. what we need,

  606. right?

  607. I mean,

  608. I don't know,

  609. sometimes we're tempted to sin,

  610. and think,

  611. well,

  612. but I don't want to throw away my Christian life.

  613. Uh,

  614. I love this cartoon about,

  615. uh,

  616. you know,

  617. the,

  618. the cloud,

  619. and this guy sitting there,

  620. wish I'd brought a magazine.

  621. I mean,

  622. if that's what you think about the future,

  623. that's not really going to help you,

  624. right?

  625. You're tempted to sin,

  626. oh man,

  627. I don't want to lose my harp and my dress.

  628. No,

  629. of course you're going to give in to sin,

  630. if you think the future isn't worth living for.

  631. Yeah?

  632. No,

  633. we have an amazing future.

  634. And,

  635. basically,

  636. what I want us all to see,

  637. well,

  638. you won't miss out later.

  639. You will have an amazing future.

  640. If you're a Christian,

  641. if you're in Christ,

  642. uh,

  643. you know,

  644. God loves this creation,

  645. and he will make a new creation,

  646. and it's going to be amazing.

  647. You're not going to miss out.

  648. I think for some of us,

  649. is that the fact that you won't miss out,

  650. means we can have,

  651. we can be content now.

  652. Right?

  653. Because,

  654. for some of us here,

  655. actually,

  656. we really feel that there are things that we want to do,

  657. but we can't.

  658. Imagine,

  659. yeah,

  660. like,

  661. if you're Sebastian,

  662. and you can't see well,

  663. and there's so much beauty to see in this world,

  664. and you can't see it,

  665. that must be really hard.

  666. And if this is your only life,

  667. that's a real pity.

  668. But,

  669. there's a new creation,

  670. and you're going to have amazing eyes,

  671. and to see amazing beauty,

  672. and you're not going to miss anything from this world.

  673. Right?

  674. It's okay.

  675. It's okay to not see this world,

  676. because you're going to be in the new creation.

  677. Others of you,

  678. maybe there's things you,

  679. were able to do in the past,

  680. and you can't do them anymore.

  681. That's okay.

  682. You're going to do much more in the future.

  683. Maybe responsibilities.

  684. Maybe there's so much you want to do,

  685. but you have kids,

  686. or you have elderly parents,

  687. and you just are unable to do those kind of things.

  688. It's okay.

  689. You can be content.

  690. You'll do them later.

  691. I mean,

  692. for me,

  693. I'd love to see Australia.

  694. I heard it's really beautiful.

  695. But yeah,

  696. I've got three kids.

  697. I've got family in two different countries.

  698. We need to see.

  699. I may never see Australia.

  700. That's okay.

  701. Because I will go to the new creation.

  702. Right?

  703. It's okay not to see Australia.

  704. Maybe if you're from Australia,

  705. you may not think so.

  706. But right?

  707. It's okay.

  708. I hope that encourages us.

  709. If we're feeling that,

  710. if we're feeling the limitations at the moment,

  711. yeah,

  712. you have a wonderful future.

  713. You will not miss out later.

  714. But I also want to speak to the rest of us

  715. who kind of don't feel that at the moment.

  716. Because many of us here,

  717. we're young,

  718. and we're single,

  719. or we're married without kids.

  720. And actually,

  721. we can get a lot out of this life.

  722. We don't have many responsibilities

  723. or limitations yet.

  724. Others of us,

  725. we're a bit older,

  726. but we have a lot of money.

  727. Right?

  728. And so,

  729. there's many of us here

  730. who can make the most of this life.

  731. Right?

  732. Which is where we started.

  733. What would Paul say to us?

  734. And Paul says to us,

  735. well,

  736. if we have resurrection bodies,

  737. we should have resurrection priorities.

  738. resurrection priorities.

  739. Because what does Paul say we should be doing?

  740. Well,

  741. the last verse of that chapter,

  742. verse 58.

  743. Therefore,

  744. my beloved brothers,

  745. be steadfast,

  746. immovable,

  747. always abounding in the work of the Lord,

  748. knowing that in the Lord,

  749. your labor is not in vain.

  750. He wants them to be doing the work of the Lord.

  751. Now,

  752. what is that?

  753. Is that your job as a lawyer or doctor?

  754. Well,

  755. the next chapter,

  756. 16,

  757. verse 10.

  758. What does Paul say?

  759. He talks about Timothy.

  760. When Timothy comes,

  761. see that you put him at ease among you,

  762. for he is doing the work of the Lord,

  763. as I am.

  764. And so,

  765. this is the stuff that Timothy and Paul do.

  766. The work of the Lord is gospel work.

  767. It's evangelism.

  768. It's making disciples.

  769. Right?

  770. It's things that build the church.

  771. Right?

  772. Things to do with God's salvation plan.

  773. That is what we should be doing,

  774. if we understand the resurrection,

  775. Paul says.

  776. Now,

  777. why is that?

  778. Now,

  779. there's a few reasons in this passage.

  780. One big thing is,

  781. of course,

  782. you know,

  783. think of this,

  784. you know,

  785. we've been thinking about me,

  786. right?

  787. Me and my body.

  788. Actually,

  789. think of this incredibly great future,

  790. what this actually means.

  791. This is the fulfillment of all God's plan.

  792. Right?

  793. This is the final step of his plan to restore everything.

  794. This is not just about you.

  795. There's like a billion Christians who will all receive a resurrection body on that day.

  796. Right?

  797. It's going to be the greatest day ever.

  798. It's why Paul goes on to talk about,

  799. you know,

  800. victory.

  801. Death is swallowed up in victory.

  802. Death,

  803. where's your victory?

  804. It's this whole crowd of people changed who are cheering and celebrating.

  805. Right?

  806. We've seen the Olympics or the European championships.

  807. You have all these people,

  808. you know,

  809. celebrating their country that has won and they're all cheering.

  810. Yay!

  811. And,

  812. you know,

  813. and that is going to be the last day.

  814. You know,

  815. the last enemy is defeated and we'll all go,

  816. yo,

  817. death,

  818. you loser,

  819. you've lost and Christ has won.

  820. And it's going to be a great celebration.

  821. The most wonderful day in history as Christ's victory is just there for all to see.

  822. And we're all celebrating.

  823. And the work of the Lord is what contributes to that.

  824. Right?

  825. If people are saved,

  826. they will be there.

  827. You know,

  828. that calling you're trying to reach out to and they believe they will be there.

  829. Part of the celebration.

  830. But it should be so.

  831. Yeah.

  832. It's not just about me.

  833. This is such a great plan to be part of,

  834. to join in.

  835. Right?

  836. It says,

  837. this is not in vain.

  838. Your work for the Lord is not in vain.

  839. Maybe now,

  840. you know,

  841. you're reading the Bible with someone and not much seems to be happening.

  842. On that day,

  843. you will see it's not in vain.

  844. See what Christ has done.

  845. See that as they stand there celebrating.

  846. No,

  847. it's not in vain.

  848. But at the same time,

  849. there's another reason.

  850. Why can we have resurrection priorities?

  851. Well,

  852. if we have such a great future,

  853. if we have another life,

  854. actually,

  855. maybe this life is a bit less important.

  856. We can spend it on other things.

  857. Because Paul says,

  858. hey,

  859. why don't you look at me and the apostles?

  860. That's what he's saying to the Corinthians earlier in that,

  861. that first paragraph that we read.

  862. Because the Corinthians,

  863. they don't believe in the resurrection.

  864. And Paul says,

  865. look,

  866. this is such a basic Christian belief.

  867. Look at me.

  868. Look at the other apostles.

  869. Look at how we live.

  870. And how does he live?

  871. Well,

  872. verse 30.

  873. Hey,

  874. Corinthians,

  875. why are we in danger every hour?

  876. I die every day.

  877. Look,

  878. why do we apostles,

  879. yeah,

  880. why do we live as we do?

  881. Why do we go around church planting?

  882. Why do we not settle down?

  883. But we go around planting churches,

  884. we get put in prison,

  885. we get persecuted,

  886. we work hard,

  887. we get opposed.

  888. Why do we live such a life?

  889. Why would you do that,

  890. why would we do that,

  891. Corinthians?

  892. Well,

  893. because of the resurrection,

  894. right?

  895. Look,

  896. verse 32.

  897. What do I gain

  898. if,

  899. humanly speaking,

  900. I fought with beasts at Ephesus?

  901. It's like,

  902. imagine,

  903. gladiator,

  904. right?

  905. You know,

  906. you're in the arena,

  907. fighting with beasts,

  908. right?

  909. You're there with your sword,

  910. trying to fight against lions.

  911. It's not a good idea,

  912. right?

  913. What do you gain?

  914. You just die.

  915. Why would I do that?

  916. Why would I waste my life like that?

  917. Because that's what they were doing,

  918. right,

  919. in the eyes of the world.

  920. If they,

  921. you know,

  922. if there's no future,

  923. we would live differently.

  924. The rest of verse 33,

  925. 32,

  926. you know,

  927. if the dead are not raised,

  928. let us eat and drink,

  929. for tomorrow we die.

  930. You know,

  931. if there's no future,

  932. well,

  933. YOLO,

  934. well,

  935. let's eat and drink,

  936. go to the best restaurants,

  937. travel,

  938. you know,

  939. get married,

  940. you know,

  941. do all those things,

  942. because this is your only life.

  943. But the thing is,

  944. we don't do that.

  945. Why don't we do that?

  946. Because we have another life.

  947. We have,

  948. we won't miss out later,

  949. and therefore,

  950. we can miss out now.

  951. I mean,

  952. that's why the Corinthian church

  953. was such a mess.

  954. You may wonder,

  955. why were the Corinthians

  956. sleeping with prostitutes

  957. and going to the idol temple

  958. to get the best food

  959. and suing each other for money

  960. and getting drunk

  961. at the Lord's Supper?

  962. Why were they doing those things?

  963. Well,

  964. because this is their only life,

  965. they thought.

  966. And so,

  967. YOLO,

  968. right?

  969. Let's get the most out of it.

  970. But Paul says,

  971. you don't need to.

  972. You don't need to do that

  973. because you have another one

  974. and you can give up this life.

  975. Now,

  976. I'm not saying

  977. we should all become missionaries.

  978. It doesn't have to be

  979. God's call on all of us.

  980. But you have to admit

  981. of our priorities,

  982. right?

  983. What are the most important things

  984. we can do right now?

  985. I mean,

  986. why is Jesus not here yet?

  987. Why don't we have

  988. a resurrection body yet?

  989. Well,

  990. the Bible tells us,

  991. 2 Peter 3,

    2 Peter 3:9

  992. verse 9,

  993. the Lord is not slow

  994. to fulfill his promise

  995. that some count slowness,

  996. but he's patient towards you,

  997. not wanting anyone to perish,

  998. but all to reach repentance.

  999. Jesus isn't here yet

1000. because he wants more people

  1001. to be saved.

1002. That's what he is doing.

  1003. I mean,

  1004. he's not delaying

1005. so you can watch more Netflix

  1006. and see more countries.

  1007. He is here to,

1008. he's delaying to save more people.

  1009. Right?

  1010. I mean,

  1011. all those things

  1012. are not bad things,

  1013. they're good things.

  1014. It's good to travel,

1015. it's good to enjoy food,

  1016. they're all good things.

  1017. The only thing is,

1018. you will also do them later.

  1019. But saving people

1020. can only be done now,

  1021. right?

  1022. When Jesus returns,

1023. there is not going to be

  1024. any more opportunity

  1025. to repent.

1026. No one can be saved anymore.

  1027. But enjoying yourself,

  1028. you can do later.

  1029. And so,

  1030. I mean,

1031. if all my to-do list,

  1032. there are things

1033. that need to be done today

1034. and things without a deadline,

1035. I will focus on the things

1036. that need to be done today.

  1037. And Paul says,

1038. that's what we should be doing.

  1039. Right?

1040. The work of the Lord

1041. can only be done now.

  1042. And,

  1043. you know,

1044. you won't miss out later,

1045. so you can miss out now.

1046. You can adjust your priorities

  1047. to prioritize

  1048. the work,

  1049. the gospel.

  1050. Prioritize discipleship.

  1051. Prioritize evangelism.

1052. Because this is the greatest thing

1053. you can be involved in

  1054. and,

  1055. you know,

  1056. you won't miss out.

1057. You won't miss out on anything.

  1058. Yeah?

  1059. I mean,

1060. most of us know that.

  1061. I mean,

  1062. I gave you,

  1063. at the start,

  1064. five years to live.

  1065. If I told you

  1066. you've got six months

  1067. left to live,

1068. I think most of you

  1069. wouldn't travel the world,

  1070. right?

1071. You want to spend time

  1072. with family.

1073. You want to make sure

  1074. your kids really know

  1075. about Jesus

  1076. and your family members.

  1077. Most of us know,

  1078. okay,

  1079. if it's really urgent,

  1080. yeah,

1081. I know what I need to do.

  1082. Prioritize people.

  1083. Prioritize the gospel.

  1084. The only thing is,

  1085. we don't think

  1086. we have six months

  1087. left to live.

  1088. We have a long,

  1089. we have decades

  1090. still to live.

  1091. And so,

  1092. we end up living

  1093. just for now,

1094. as if there's no future.

  1095. And Paul says,

  1096. no.

  1097. Yeah?

1098. you can do that later.

1099. You won't miss out later.

1100. You can miss out now.

  1101. Now,

  1102. well,

1103. what would that look like?

1104. Let me just give a few examples

1105. from kind of small things

  1106. to big things.

  1107. You know,

1108. the work of the Lord.

  1109. What do you need?

1110. I guess it needs time,

  1111. right?

  1112. Because it's people work,

1113. you need to be with people

1114. to read the Bible with them

  1115. or to evangelize them.

  1116. It needs money

  1117. because missionaries

1118. need to go across the world.

  1119. So,

  1120. well,

  1121. can we reprioritize

1122. some of our time and money?

  1123. Something simple.

  1124. Watching TV.

  1125. I mean,

1126. it's good to watch TV.

1127. It's nice to switch off your brain.

  1128. You know,

  1129. maybe you're watching

  1130. 10 hours a week.

1131. Do you need to watch 10 hours?

1132. Or do you also get a break

1133. if you watch 8 hours?

  1134. Well,

1135. if 8 hours is enough,

  1136. maybe those 2 hours

  1137. you can spend time

  1138. befriending someone.

1139. Maybe you can read the Bible

  1140. with someone, right?

  1141. Very simple thing,

  1142. but you're prioritizing

1143. the work of the Lord.

1144. You're not cutting off all TV.

  1145. You know,

  1146. TV is good.

  1147. It's good to relax.

  1148. But actually,

  1149. you know,

  1150. I don't need more than this.

  1151. Why do more

  1152. than I need?

  1153. Something like that.

  1154. Or,

  1155. you're at work.

  1156. You know,

  1157. how do you spend

  1158. your lunch breaks?

1159. I think many of us,

  1160. we, you know,

  1161. you just get food

1162. and you eat it behind your desk

  1163. so that you can

  1164. do more work

1165. and be a better worker.

  1166. Well,

  1167. you could prioritize

1168. the work of the Lord

1169. if you are able to.

1170. Why not read the Bible

  1171. with someone over lunch?

  1172. It does mean

  1173. a whole lunch break.

  1174. Maybe you get

  1175. slightly less work done.

  1176. You know,

  1177. slightly less good review

1178. at the end of the year.

  1179. Slightly less bonus.

1180. Slightly less holiday this year.

  1181. That's okay, right?

  1182. Because you're prioritizing

1183. the work of the Lord.

  1184. There are small examples.

1185. Let me give some bigger examples.

  1186. So,

  1187. I knew a guy in England

1188. and he was this kind of

  1189. top finance guy.

1190. And he could go to Australia

  1191. with his family.

  1192. No problem.

  1193. The only thing is

  1194. he didn't.

1195. He would just go camping.

1196. Why would he go camping?

  1197. Well,

  1198. he said,

  1199. well,

  1200. that's all I need,

  1201. right?

1202. I get time with family.

1203. I get time away from work.

  1204. That's all I need.

  1205. But the advantage is

1206. at the end of the summer

  1207. he would have

  1208. $100,000

1209. in his bank account left.

  1210. and those $100,000

1211. he could give to mission work.

  1212. I mean,

  1213. that's a bigger decision,

  1214. right?

  1215. But he would say,

  1216. hey,

  1217. I don't need to see Australia.

  1218. I don't need all this.

1219. I can spend my money better

1220. and I can still get a holiday.

  1221. I don't know

1222. what you think of that.

  1223. Or,

  1224. here's another one.

  1225. I once read a blog post

  1226. by some woman.

  1227. She became a stay-at-home mom,

  1228. right?

  1229. So she stopped working

  1230. when she had kids

  1231. and,

  1232. you know,

  1233. wanted to really invest

  1234. in her kids.

1235. And she wrote this blog post

  1236. and she said,

  1237. you know,

  1238. everyone keeps telling me

  1239. you're giving up

  1240. your career.

  1241. And she said,

1242. I'm not giving up my career.

  1243. I'm postponing my career.

1244. Because in the new creation,

  1245. we'll be working,

  1246. right?

  1247. We'll be...

  1248. It's a physical creation.

1249. And so I will have

  1250. an amazing career later.

  1251. I will have a career.

  1252. Just not now.

  1253. Right now,

1254. I want to invest in my kids

  1255. so they know Jesus

  1256. and so that they

  1257. are raised properly,

  1258. right?

  1259. That's an interesting way

  1260. of thinking,

  1261. right?

  1262. You will have

  1263. a great career later.

  1264. You...

  1265. Therefore,

1266. you don't need it now.

  1267. I'm not saying

  1268. a career is bad

  1269. because we will have

  1270. a career later,

  1271. right?

  1272. Careers are good.

  1273. And some of us,

  1274. many of us,

1275. we need it to work,

  1276. right?

  1277. Many families,

  1278. yeah,

  1279. you need two incomes

  1280. because Hong Kong

  1281. is so expensive.

  1282. But,

  1283. maybe a career

  1284. in this life

  1285. is not the most

  1286. important thing.

  1287. Maybe you don't need

  1288. to maximize your potential.

  1289. You'll do that later.

1290. You don't need to use

  1291. all your gifts.

1292. You will do that later.

  1293. Right?

  1294. I mean,

  1295. that's a very big decision.

  1296. But,

  1297. just to give you

  1298. some examples,

  1299. okay,

  1300. here are people

  1301. who really

  1302. get the new creation

  1303. and think,

  1304. okay,

  1305. if that is true,

  1306. you know,

1307. I can make some changes

  1308. in my life.

  1309. And none of these

  1310. are bad things.

  1311. It's good to have a rest.

  1312. It's good to have a break.

  1313. It's good to have

  1314. a new experience.

  1315. But,

  1316. at the same time,

  1317. right,

  1318. we will do that

  1319. later as well.

  1320. And so,

  1321. maybe we can

  1322. prioritize

1323. the work of the Lord.

  1324. Make that our

  1325. priority.

  1326. And live a

  1327. more simple,

  1328. stripped down life

  1329. just because

  1330. the gospel

1331. is such an important thing.

  1332. I mean,

  1333. it is challenging.

  1334. It's challenging for me.

  1335. It's challenging

1336. for each one of us.

  1337. But,

  1338. be honest,

  1339. would anyone

  1340. be disappointed

  1341. when Jesus returns?

  1342. Will any of us

  1343. be there

  1344. and think,

  1345. oh man,

  1346. I missed out

  1347. on season five

  1348. of that series?

  1349. Man,

  1350. I wish I had

  1351. invested more

  1352. in my career.

  1353. None of us

  1354. will do that,

  1355. right?

  1356. We will be there

  1357. and think,

  1358. man,

  1359. I wish I prayed more.

  1360. I wish I shared

  1361. the gospel

  1362. with more people.

  1363. That's what we'll be

  1364. feeling,

  1365. I think.

  1366. So,

  1367. let's have

  1368. this great

  1369. future vision.

  1370. I wanted to finish

  1371. with an amazing

  1372. letter that expresses

1373. some of this so well.

  1374. There was a missionary

  1375. called Adoniram Judson.

  1376. He was a missionary

  1377. early 19th century

  1378. to Myanmar.

  1379. And he wanted

  1380. to go on mission,

  1381. but he also

  1382. was in love

  1383. with this girl.

1384. And if they got married,

  1385. well,

  1386. she'd have to come

  1387. with him.

  1388. And so,

  1389. he wrote a letter

  1390. to her father

  1391. asking,

  1392. hey,

  1393. can I marry her?

  1394. But,

  1395. you know,

1396. this is what it means.

  1397. And,

  1398. you know,

1399. this is what he asked

  1400. the father.

  1401. I have now

  1402. to ask

  1403. whether you can

  1404. consent

  1405. to part

  1406. with your daughter

  1407. early next spring,

  1408. to see her

  1409. no more

  1410. in this world,

  1411. whether you can

  1412. consent to her

  1413. departure to a

  1414. heathen land

  1415. and her subjection

  1416. to the hardships

  1417. and sufferings

  1418. of a missionary life,

  1419. whether you can

  1420. consent to her

  1421. exposure to the

  1422. dangers of the ocean,

  1423. to the fatal

  1424. influence of the

  1425. southern climate

  1426. of India,

  1427. to every kind

  1428. of want and distress,

  1429. to degradation,

  1430. insult,

  1431. persecution,

  1432. and perhaps

  1433. a violent death.

  1434. Now,

  1435. why would you

  1436. do that,

  1437. right?

  1438. Why would you

  1439. let your daughter

  1440. do that

  1441. if this is

  1442. your only life?

  1443. Well,

  1444. he goes on.

  1445. Think about

  1446. the big picture.

  1447. Can you consent

  1448. to all this

  1449. for the sake

  1450. of him

  1451. who left

  1452. his heavenly home

  1453. and died

  1454. for her

  1455. and for you,

  1456. for the sake

  1457. of perishing

  1458. immortal souls,

  1459. for the sake

  1460. of Zion

  1461. and the glory

  1462. of God?

  1463. Now,

  1464. think about

  1465. the big picture.

  1466. And again,

  1467. you won't lose out,

  1468. right?

  1469. Can you consent

  1470. to all this

  1471. in hope of soon

  1472. meeting your daughter

1473. in the world of glory?

  1474. I mean,

  1475. you're not going to

  1476. see your daughter

  1477. for a while,

  1478. but you'll see her

  1479. again,

  1480. right?

  1481. In 20 years' time,

  1482. you'll be together

  1483. forever.

  1484. It's okay,

  1485. but something

  1486. will have changed.

  1487. You will see

  1488. your daughter

  1489. in the world

  1490. of glory

  1491. with a crown

  1492. of righteousness,

  1493. brightened

  1494. by the acclamations

  1495. of praise,

  1496. which shall

  1497. resound

  1498. to her Savior

  1499. from he even

  1500. saved,

  1501. through her means

  1502. from eternal

  1503. woe and despair.

  1504. Right?

  1505. Now you will see

  1506. your daughter

  1507. and you will see

  1508. all these other

  1509. people who have

  1510. been saved

  1511. through her

  1512. because she went

  1513. on mission work.

  1514. Isn't that worth

  1515. sending your daughter

  1516. for,

  1517. right?

  1518. You know,

  1519. Paul says,

  1520. the labor in the

  1521. Lord is not

  1522. in vain.

  1523. And actually,

  1524. some of the other

  1525. things we do

  1526. in this life

  1527. will be in vain,

  1528. right?

  1529. I mean,

  1530. she will be there

  1531. with all those

  1532. people.

  1533. And if we've

  1534. just lived our

  1535. life here

  1536. and we've just

  1537. done our

  1538. career and TV,

  1539. won't be much

  1540. to celebrate.

  1541. In a way,

  1542. we will miss out

  1543. later in that

  1544. sense,

  1545. right?

  1546. We'll,

  1547. you know,

  1548. less to celebrate.

  1549. No.

  1550. You have an

  1551. amazing future

  1552. body.

  1553. You can miss

  1554. out now

  1555. for something

  1556. much greater,

  1557. more glorious.

  1558. Don't we

  1559. want that?

  1560. Let's,

  1561. let's think

  1562. about it.

  1563. Let's think,

  1564. okay,

  1565. if this is true,

  1566. do I really

  1567. believe this?

  1568. And what does

  1569. this mean for me?

  1570. And I think

  1571. a very good time

  1572. to reflect

  1573. will be in a

  1574. moment.

  1575. We're going to

  1576. take the Lord's

  1577. Supper.

  1578. And,

  1579. you know,

  1580. this is,

  1581. of course,

  1582. Jesus'

  1583. body and

  1584. blood.

  1585. It's also

  1586. a little

  1587. foretaste,

  1588. right?

  1589. One day,

  1590. we will be

  1591. with Jesus

  1592. at the

  1593. wedding supper

  1594. of the Lamb.

  1595. Now,

  1596. wedding suppers,

  1597. this is not a

  1598. wedding supper,

  1599. right?

  1600. This is nothing.

  1601. Last week,

  1602. I was at a

  1603. wedding.

  1604. It was a lot

  1605. better than

  1606. this,

  1607. right?

  1608. You know,

  1609. this is not

  1610. it.

  1611. When you come

  1612. and take

  1613. this,

  1614. okay,

  1615. Jesus,

  1616. I know

  1617. this is not

  1618. it.

  1619. This life

  1620. is not

  1621. it.

  1622. You know,

  1623. my life

  1624. is just

  1625. this.

  1626. Later

  1627. is a

  1628. wedding

  1629. banquet.

  1630. And I

  1631. trust you

  1632. for that.

  1633. And then,

  1634. are you

  1635. willing to

  1636. give that

  1637. up?

  1638. Just like

  1639. Jesus was.

  1640. Because Jesus

  1641. could have

  1642. settled down.

  1643. Jesus

  1644. could have

  1645. spent more

  1646. time with

  1647. the disciples.

  1648. But what did

  1649. he say at

  1650. the last

  1651. supper?

  1652. He said,

  1653. you know,

  1654. I will no

  1655. longer drink

  1656. of the fruit

  1657. of the vine

  1658. until I

  1659. drink it

  1660. with you

  1661. in my

  1662. Father's

  1663. kingdom.

  1664. And Jesus

  1665. gave up

  1666. his life.

  1667. You know,

  1668. he gave

  1669. up the fruit

  1670. of the vine

  1671. now so he

  1672. can have it

  1673. later with

  1674. us at

  1675. a wedding

  1676. banquet.

  1677. As we

  1678. take the

  1679. Lord's

  1680. supper,

  1681. you know,

  1682. remember

  1683. Jesus'

  1684. love.

  1685. Remember

  1686. his sacrifice

  1687. for you,

  1688. giving up

  1689. everything to

  1690. save you.

  1691. And would

  1692. we follow

  1693. him?

  1694. We won't

  1695. miss out

  1696. later.

  1697. Let's

  1698. prioritize

  1699. his salvation

  1700. plan,

  1701. his mission

  1702. work,

  1703. the work

  1704. of the

  1705. Lord in

  1706. our lives,

  1707. knowing we

  1708. will be with

  1709. him forever.

  1710. We won't

  1711. miss out.

  1712. why don't

  1713. we give

  1714. us 30

  1715. seconds

  1716. silence,

  1717. then I'll

  1718. pray for

  1719. us,

  1720. and during

  1721. the time

  1722. the music

  1723. team and

  1724. the communion

  1725. stewards can

  1726. come forward.

  1727. Amen.

  1728. Let's

  1729. pray.

  1730. Father,

  1731. thank you

  1732. for the

  1733. great future

  1734. we see

  1735. here.

  1736. Thank you

  1737. that you

  1738. will make

  1739. everything

  1740. right.

  1741. Thank you

  1742. that if we

  1743. trust in

  1744. Jesus,

  1745. we'll be

  1746. part of

  1747. that.

  1748. Thank you

  1749. that it's

  1750. certain

  1751. and it's

  1752. more

  1753. wonderful

  1754. than

  1755. anything

  1756. here in

  1757. this

  1758. life.

  1759. Father,

  1760. would we

  1761. live like

  1762. that?

  1763. Would you

  1764. help us

  1765. to see

  1766. what is

  1767. important?

  1768. See Jesus

  1769. and what

  1770. he did?

  1771. And would

  1772. we follow

  1773. him in

  1774. the way

  1775. we live?

  1776. Lord,

  1777. would you

  1778. use this

  1779. time to

  1780. strengthen

  1781. us?

  1782. We

  1783. remember

  1784. what Jesus

  1785. said at

  1786. the last

  1787. supper.

  1788. Remember

  1789. that how

  1790. he took

  1791. bread and

  1792. when he

  1793. had given

  1794. thanks,

  1795. he broke

  1796. it and

  1797. said,

  1798. this is

  1799. my body

  1800. which is

  1801. for you.

  1802. Do this

  1803. in remembrance

  1804. of me.

  1805. In the

  1806. same way

  1807. also,

  1808. he took

  1809. the cup

  1810. after supper

  1811. saying,

  1812. this cup

  1813. is the

  1814. new covenant

  1815. in my

  1816. blood.

  1817. Do this

  1818. as often

  1819. as you

  1820. drink it

  1821. in remembrance

  1822. of me.

  1823. For as

  1824. often as

  1825. you eat

  1826. this bread

  1827. and drink

  1828. the cup,

  1829. you proclaim

  1830. the Lord's

  1831. death

  1832. until he

  1833. comes.

  1834. So as

  1835. we take

  1836. this,

  1837. would we

  1838. proclaim

  1839. the Lord's

  1840. death?

  1841. Would we

  1842. proclaim

  1843. that that

  1844. is our

  1845. hope?

  1846. Our hope

  1847. is not

  1848. here in

  1849. this life.

  1850. Our hope

  1851. is the

  1852. resurrection

  1853. when we'll

  1854. see Jesus

  1855. face to

  1856. face.

  1857. So

  1858. strengthen

  1859. our faith,

  1860. send us
