  1. Now, all the Bible is God-breathed.

  2. All the Bible is useful and edifying,

  3. but we know that there are some parts of the Bible

  4. ! that we're more excited to have a sermon about than others.

  5. There are some portions of Scripture

  6. that the church returns to time and time again

  7. in order to be restored and refreshed.

  8. And historically, Paul's letter to the Ephesians

  9. is one of those.

  10. And it's widely regarded as a competitor

  11. of one of the most clear and most powerful books

  12. in all of Scripture.

  13. You know, the Puritan Thomas Goodwin,

  14. he said that this book is the beating heart of Scripture.

  15. You may know that I'm a big fan of John Calvin,

  16. and John Calvin wrote books and preached on most of the Bible,

  17. but this was his favorite.

  18. And even Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  19. who many of you will know is a really big fan of Romans,

  20. even he said that Ephesians is the sublimest

  21. and most majestic expression of the Gospel.

  22. And as we begin today,

  23. I want you to think about the book of Ephesians

  24. as the Ephesian botanical garden.

  25. And before you even walk through the entrance,

  26. I want you to see the winding path

  27. that leads you past some of the most incredible,

  28. beautiful displays.

  29. You can glimpse the incredible flowers

  30. of the blessings of Christ

  31. from chapters 1, verses 3 to 14.

  32. Behind those, you can glimpse

  33. the trees of grace alone and faith alone,

  34. the vine of union with Christ.

  35. Behind those, you can see even more famous passages

  36. about our new life in Jesus Christ from chapter 4

  37. or the whole armor of God from chapter 6.

  38. And after you've imagined the Ephesian botanic garden,

  39. I want you to take one step inside and stop.

  40. And I don't want you to look around

  41. at anything that you find so incredible around you.

  42. I want you to stop and just look down

  43. at the first two verses of this letter.

  44. There are 38 blades of grass there in the ESV,

  45. 36 in the NIV,

  46. a mere 30 blades of grass in the Greek.

  47. And this patch of ground

  48. is what some people consider the least sublime

  49. and the least majestic part of this entire garden.

  50. And understandably so.

  51. It's an introductory patch of grass.

  52. But to just dig into this illustration a little bit more,

  53. I believe these first two verses

  54. are the theological equivalent of Bermuda grass.

  55. What is Bermuda grass?

  56. Bermuda grass looks like grass.

  57. It feels like grass because it is grass.

  58. But even though it's very short,

  59. it has roots that stretch up to seven feet deep underneath.

  60. And I know these couple of dozen words before us

  61. don't look particularly interesting,

  62. but what is really impressive

  63. is the thought behind them,

  64. the roots.

  65. And what I want to do today

  66. is to pull these words up by their roots

  67. and really look at the root structure,

  68. the thought behind these words.

  69. Why is Paul saying these precise words

  70. and what does he precisely mean?

  71. Because what we will find

  72. is that the roots here

  73. are tremendously important for us to see.

  74. they're the same roots that you need

  75. in your Christian lives.

  76. Because you need deep roots

  77. to get nutrients

  78. that you need to grow as a Christian.

  79. And so today we're going to have four points,

  80. all relatively brief,

  81. all dealing with how we're supposed to think

  82. as Christians

  83. in order to be able to read

  84. this beautiful letter

  85. and really any portion of Scripture.

  86. But the first thing Paul teaches us in this letter

  87. is how to think about the Bible.

  88. I want you to notice how Paul begins his letter.

  89. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus

  90. by the will of God.

  91. And what Paul is doing there

  92. is saying that when you hear

  93. or read this letter,

  94. you are coming face to face,

  95. not just with my words,

  96. but with God's words.

  97. When Paul says he is an apostle,

  98. he's not just throwing in

  99. a generic filler word,

  100. trying to get a little bit more space

  101. in the introduction.

  102. Apostle is an office.

  103. It's an office as sure

  104. as the defense secretary

  105. or the home secretary,

  106. the first minister

  107. or the prime minister.

  108. You know, I know that there are some

  109. Christian denominations

  110. that call their leaders apostles

  111. and they throw around that term.

  112. But real apostles

  113. are only commissioned by Jesus Christ himself.

  114. And it is a title

  115. that was given only to the 12 disciples,

  116. including Judas' replacement,

  117. and Paul.

  118. And it literally means

  119. one sent out.

  120. One sent out by Jesus.

  121. And Jesus gave these specific men

  122. the title of apostle

  123. so that they could function

  124. as his special ambassadors,

  125. as heralds.

  126. And Paul here

  127. is opening up this letter

  128. with his credentials.

  129. An apostle.

  130. On whose authority?

  131. Paul's?

  132. No.

  133. By the will of God.

  134. And that means

  135. when Paul speaks

  136. and writes as an apostle,

  137. he is really speaking

  138. and writing words

  139. with divine authority

  140. on a divine mission.

  141. You know,

  142. when you hear Paul's words

  143. read to you,

  144. you're really hearing them twice.

  145. Not just once.

  146. You hear Paul's words

  147. and Jesus' words

  148. at the same time.

  149. If you could skip forward

  150. in your Bibles

  151. very quickly

  152. to Ephesians 2, verse 17.

    Ephesians 2:17

  153. I want you to notice

  154. the precise wording he uses.

  155. He came and preached

  156. peace to you

  157. who were far off

  158. and peace to those

  159. who were near.

  160. And that he there,

  161. who is that?

  162. That's Jesus.

  163. Paul is saying

  164. that Jesus himself

  165. preached to those

  166. who were far off

  167. including the Ephesians.

  168. Including the Ephesians

  169. that he's writing

  170. this letter to.

  171. You know,

  172. how is he able

  173. to say that?

  174. You know,

  175. Jesus himself

  176. technically only

  177. left Judea

  178. a couple of times

  179. and not for very long.

  180. You know,

  181. really the longest stretch

  182. is when he was a baby

  183. when he went to Egypt

  184. and he wasn't doing

  185. any teaching then.

  186. You know,

  187. there is no secret gap year

  188. in the Bible

  189. where Jesus decides

  190. to take a quick trip

  191. to Ephesus

  192. and start teaching

  193. the Ephesians.

  194. That's not what's in Scripture.

  195. The Ephesians

  196. never literally heard

  197. Jesus' own voice

  198. with his precise accent

  199. preach to them.

  200. But still,

  201. they did hear Paul.

  202. They heard Paul

  203. the Apostle.

  204. And it's not,

  205. and it's really the same

  206. not just for Paul's letters

  207. but for the entire Bible.

  208. In the Bible

  209. we have a lot of different authors.

  210. We have a lot of books

  211. in the Bible.

  212. And they're written

  213. by many people.

  214. You can think of

  215. Moses,

  216. David,

  217. Isaiah,

  218. Jeremiah.

  219. We could go through them.

  220. Many of them

  221. have the books

  222. titled after them.

  223. But when it gets

  224. right down to it,

  225. we can talk about Scripture

  226. having two authors.

  227. There's a human author

  228. and there's a divine author.

  229. And when you read

  230. the words

  231. of the Gospel of John,

  232. those words

  233. really are written

  234. by a human man

  235. named John

  236. who knew Jesus

  237. and walked with him.

  238. And all of his friends

  239. could have read

  240. that Gospel

  241. and thought

  242. only John

  243. could have put it that way.

  244. Doesn't that sound

  245. just so much

  246. like John?

  247. And yet every human

  248. author of Scripture

  249. is carried along

  250. by the Holy Spirit.

  251. And every word

  252. they write

  253. is God-breathed.

  254. And every word

  255. of Scripture

  256. are,

  257. these are not just

  258. the words

  259. of a human author

  260. but of God

  261. himself.

  262. And when we read

  263. Scripture

  264. we need to recognize

  265. that we are really

  266. reading

  267. the Word

  268. of God.

  269. That it is

  270. God's Word

  271. to us.

  272. This is so important

  273. for us to see

  274. because it affects

  275. the way

  276. we read Scripture

  277. and the way

  278. we hear Scripture

  279. preached.

  280. And when you read

  281. your Bibles

  282. you need to accept them

  283. not just

  284. as the words

  285. of Paul

  286. not just as the words

  287. of Moses

  288. but as Jesus'

  289. words

  290. as well.

  291. Your Savior

  292. is speaking

  293. to you.

  294. He wants you

  295. to know

  296. your Bibles

  297. and he wants

  298. to teach you

  299. through his Word

  300. more and more

  301. about himself.

  302. Every Christian

  303. is taught

  304. by Jesus.

  305. Every single one.

  306. And you commune

  307. with God

  308. whenever you open

  309. up your Bibles.

  310. What you need

  311. when you read

  312. your Bibles

  313. are really

  314. better eyes.

  315. By that

  316. I don't just mean

  317. better eyes

  318. to see the words

  319. on the page

  320. though that's

  321. obviously very important

  322. and I recommend

  323. reading glasses.

  324. But what you need

  325. are eyes

  326. to see the miracle

  327. that happens

  328. when a Christian

  329. reads the Scriptures.

  330. You know

  331. a sinner

  332. who is distant

  333. from God

  334. is brought

  335. near in Jesus Christ

  336. indwelt by the Holy Spirit

  337. and given new

  338. spirit illumined eyes

  339. to read

  340. their Bibles

  341. and commune

  342. with their Saviors.

  343. And seeing that

  344. should make you

  345. eager

  346. to read

  347. Scripture.

  348. Eager

  349. to just read it

  350. and see

  351. what is there

  352. what has been

  353. given to you

  354. and to commune

  355. with your Savior.

  356. This also changes

  357. the way

  358. we hear preaching.

  359. One of the things

  360. we believe

  361. is that the preaching

  362. of the Word of God

  363. is the Word of God.

  364. And granted

  365. that's only insofar

  366. as preaching

  367. is right and true

  368. and that's

  369. perfectly correct.

  370. Bad preaching

  371. and preaching

  372. that is false

  373. and teaches

  374. bad doctrines

  375. that is not

  376. the Word of God.

  377. But

  378. your goal

  379. when you come to church

  380. is not actually

  381. to hear the preacher.

  382. Your goal

  383. is to hear Jesus.

  384. And really

  385. your goal

  386. is to ignore

  387. the preacher

  388. really as much

  389. as possible

  390. whether you like

  391. them or don't

  392. like them.

  393. Your goal

  394. is to see Jesus

  395. and to hear

  396. His voice.

  397. What you need

  398. when you come

  399. to church

  400. is to be able

  401. to say

  402. the same words

  403. of Ephesians

  404. 2.17

  405. that we have

  406. heard Jesus Christ

  407. come to us

  408. and preach

  409. peace.

  410. And that is something

  411. that everyone

  412. in this room

  413. can say

  414. every Sunday

  415. here together

  416. we hear Jesus

  417. preach

  418. peace

  419. to us.

  420. And doesn't

  421. that just fill you

  422. with a little bit

  423. of joy?

  424. Doesn't that fill you

  425. with a little bit

  426. of majesty?

  427. Doesn't it also fill you

  428. with a bit of

  429. helpful trepidation?

  430. Because sometimes

  431. at the end

  432. of a very long week

  433. we're not that eager

  434. to come to church

  435. and we find ourselves

  436. tired and it's hard

  437. to listen.

  438. But what we need

  439. to do is have

  440. this truth

  441. in front of our eyes.

  442. The main point

  443. is that the Word

  444. is the Word of God.

  445. But the second thing

  446. Paul teaches us

  447. in this letter

  448. is how to think

  449. about yourself.

  450. I want you to notice

  451. how Paul describes

  452. the Ephesian church

  453. in chapter 1

  454. in verse 1.

  455. He says

  456. they are saints

  457. or God's holy people

  458. and then also

  459. faithful.

  460. And he's not saying

  461. that some are saints

  462. over here

  463. and that some

  464. are faithful

  465. and he's just

  466. lumping the two

  467. together.

  468. He's saying

  469. that all are faithful

  470. and all are saints.

  471. I want to break

  472. that down

  473. for a minute.

  474. Anyone who

  475. everyone who

  476. understands

  477. here

  478. that to be a Christian

  479. you need to have faith.

  480. That's non-negotiable.

  481. You need to have

  482. faith

  483. and not just

  484. faith in that

  485. really squishy

  486. modern sense

  487. of just hoping

  488. everything's going

  489. to pan out

  490. some way

  491. or the other

  492. but faith

  493. in Jesus Christ.

  494. That's what it

  495. means to be a Christian.

  496. This is why

  497. we talk about

  498. salvation

  499. being by

  500. faith alone.

  501. You are given

  502. faith in Christ

  503. by the Holy Spirit

  504. and then Jesus

  505. saves you

  506. through your faith

  507. not by your works.

  508. But what does

  509. Paul mean here

  510. by saints

  511. or holy people?

  512. when we hear

  513. about saints

  514. we usually

  515. think about

  516. super Christians

  517. super Christians

  518. because we know

  519. that this word

  520. saint

  521. has an

  522. association

  523. with Roman Catholics

  524. and only special

  525. Christians get

  526. that title

  527. saint

  528. saint

  529. Augustine

  530. saint Patrick

  531. most Christians

  532. don't think about

  533. themselves as saints

  534. but that's not the

  535. way the Bible

  536. uses the term.

  537. In the Bible

  538. the word holy

  539. is the word saint

  540. and the word saint

  541. is just the word holy

  542. and all Christians

  543. are described

  544. as holy

  545. it's not something

  546. that's added extra

  547. on top

  548. and that you try

  549. to work up to

  550. after you have faith.

  551. Every Christian

  552. who had faith

  553. in Ephesus

  554. was also holy.

  555. It wasn't something

  556. they had to earn

  557. by their works

  558. after they were a Christian

  559. they were holy

  560. because they were

  561. Christians.

  562. But I don't want you

  563. to but I also want you

  564. to understand

  565. that there's an order

  566. here.

  567. There's an order here

  568. between faith

  569. and holiness

  570. and you can't see

  571. this precise order

  572. in these verses

  573. I grant you

  574. but if you step

  575. take a step back

  576. you can see it

  577. in this letter

  578. and in all of Paul's letters

  579. almost all of Paul's letters

  580. you can cut them in half

  581. with a knife

  582. very very neatly.

  583. The first half

  584. talks about

  585. who you are

  586. in Jesus Christ.

  587. You can see that

  588. in Ephesians chapter 1 to 3.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  589. It describes

  590. the blessings

  591. you have in Christ

  592. describe what Christ

  593. has done for you

  594. and your new identity

  595. in Christ

  596. and then in chapter 4

  597. it switches gears

  598. and the second half

  599. talks about

  600. what you're supposed

  601. to do

  602. in Jesus Christ.

  603. The great hinge

  604. is in Ephesians 4.1

  605. I therefore

  606. a prisoner of the Lord

  607. urge you to walk

  608. in a manner

  609. worthy of a calling

  610. to which you have

  611. been called.

  612. Paul's saying

  613. that in light of everything

  614. I've just told you

  615. in the first half

  616. here's what you're

  617. supposed to do

  618. you're supposed to act

  619. like it.

  620. You're not supposed

  621. to earn it

  622. but you are supposed

  623. to act like it.

  624. The first half

  625. describes

  626. the second half

  627. commands

  628. and Paul thinks

  629. both are incredibly

  630. important

  631. but he always

  632. puts the commands

  633. after.

  634. We don't follow

  635. God's commands

  636. in order for him

  637. to allow us

  638. to be in Christ

  639. once we've measured up

  640. but precisely because

  641. we are already

  642. in Christ.

  643. We obey

  644. not because we want

  645. to be loved

  646. but because we have

  647. been loved

  648. and we want to show

  649. our love

  650. to God.

  651. What Paul wants

  652. to tell you

  653. is that you are

  654. faithful

  655. and holy

  656. simultaneously.

  657. Maybe that

  658. point about

  659. the whole book

  660. of Ephesians

  661. is a little too

  662. abstract.

  663. Maybe you want it

  664. a little more

  665. simply.

  666. Just look at

  667. Ephesians 2

  668. 8-10.

  669. For by grace

  670. you have been

  671. saved through

  672. faith

  673. and this is not

  674. your own doing

  675. it is the gift

  676. of God

  677. not a result

  678. of works

  679. so that no one

  680. may boast

  681. for we are

  682. his workmanship

  683. created in Christ

  684. Jesus

  685. for good works

  686. which God

  687. prepared beforehand

  688. that we should

  689. walk in them.

  690. You are saved

  691. by faith

  692. not by works

  693. but you are also

  694. saved

  695. in order

  696. to glorify

  697. God

  698. through your works

  699. not in order

  700. to try to earn

  701. your ability

  702. to stand before God

  703. not at all

  704. but you are called

  705. to glorify God

  706. and so

  707. I want you to think

  708. about yourself

  709. like this

  710. someone who has

  711. faith in Jesus Christ

  712. but also

  713. someone who

  714. strives

  715. day after day

  716. day in and day out

  717. to be holy

  718. like their savior

  719. imperfectly

  720. yes

  721. one step

  722. forward

  723. maybe in a step

  724. backward

  725. maybe two steps

  726. forward

  727. one step

  728. back

  729. absolutely

  730. but you need to

  731. have faith

  732. and holiness

  733. on the mind

  734. I want you to

  735. think back

  736. to your

  737. catechisms

  738. what do the

  739. scriptures

  740. principally teach

  741. what man is to

  742. believe concerning

  743. God and what

  744. duty God

  745. requires of man

  746. we expect to find

  747. both of those

  748. things in

  749. scripture

  750. something to

  751. grow us in

  752. faith

  753. and something

  754. also to

  755. call us to

  756. greater holiness

  757. to be more

  758. like our savior

  759. and that's what we

  760. expect whenever we

  761. open up any

  762. portion of the

  763. Bible

  764. including Ephesians

  765. something to

  766. feed our faith

  767. and something to

  768. call us to

  769. holiness

  770. but the third

  771. thing Paul teaches

  772. us in this letter

  773. is how to think

  774. about ministry

  775. in verse 2

  776. Paul says

  777. grace to you

  778. and peace

  779. now Paul always

  780. says grace

  781. and peace

  782. in his letters

  783. it's kind of his

  784. phrase

  785. you know in his

  786. letters to Timothy

  787. and Titus he

  788. sometimes adds in

  789. mercy

  790. just for good

  791. measure

  792. but most of

  793. the times

  794. it's grace

  795. and peace

  796. but that's

  797. rather interesting

  798. this is not

  799. a standard way

  800. to open up a

  801. letter in the

  802. ancient world

  803. nobody else

  804. does this

  805. except Paul

  806. but Paul

  807. just does it

  808. out of hand

  809. all the time

  810. and part of

  811. what's happening

  812. here is that

  813. he's actually

  814. trying to pull

  815. off a bit

  816. of a pun

  817. and the Greek

  818. word for

  819. greetings is

  820. kairate

  821. and the Greek

  822. word for grace

  823. is kairis

  824. and so he's

  825. basically giving

  826. Christian greetings

  827. and he's making

  828. grace foundational

  829. to everything

  830. grace is the

  831. first thing

  832. in the Christian

  833. life

  834. grace is the

  835. first thing

  836. I'm going to

  837. mention to you

  838. that's part of

  839. what's happening

  840. but what's

  841. happening here

  842. is also

  843. it's not

  844. simply a pun

  845. this is a

  846. reference

  847. to the

  848. ironic

  849. blessing

  850. of numbers

  851. 6

  852. 24 to

  853. 26

  854. the Lord

  855. bless you

  856. and keep you

  857. the Lord

  858. make his face

  859. to shine upon

  860. you and be

  861. gracious to you

  862. the Lord

  863. lift up his

  864. countenance upon

  865. you and give

  866. you peace

  867. that's the

  868. famous blessing

  869. of the Old

  870. Testament

  871. it's always

  872. pronounced over

  873. God's people

  874. and what is that

  875. blessing it's

  876. simply giving

  877. them grace

  878. and peace

  879. and really

  880. Paul's ministry

  881. and all of

  882. Christian ministry

  883. can be summarized

  884. by those two

  885. words

  886. grace and

  887. peace

  888. this is

  889. precisely what

  890. you should

  891. expect

  892. when you

  893. come

  894. to worship

  895. we come

  896. with guilty

  897. consciences

  898. before God

  899. and we

  900. receive

  901. not the

  902. punishment

  903. due to our

  904. sins

  905. but grace

  906. and peace

  907. we are

  908. invited

  909. to sing

  910. and to

  911. praise

  912. and we

  913. who were

  914. once rebels

  915. in his

  916. sight

  917. are now

  918. able to

  919. say we

  920. have a

  921. perfect

  922. relationship

  923. with

  924. God

  925. and desire

  926. only to

  927. grow in

  928. love of

  929. him

  930. Paul's

  931. ministry

  932. and Christian

  933. ministry

  934. is really

  935. doing the

  936. same thing

  937. as ministry

  938. in the Old

  939. Testament

  940. we here

  941. today

  942. we are not

  943. getting something

  944. fundamentally

  945. different

  946. than Abraham

  947. Isaac

  948. and Jacob

  949. they had

  950. peace with

  951. God

  952. by their

  953. faith

  954. not by

  955. works

  956. they looked

  957. to the grace

  958. of Jesus

  959. and when the

  960. saints gathered

  961. in the temple

  962. or the synagogues

  963. they rejoiced

  964. in the peace

  965. they had

  966. with God

  967. even though

  968. they didn't

  969. deserve it

  970. and that's

  971. why we

  972. preach from

  973. the Old

  974. Testament

  975. that's not

  976. a sidetracked

  977. thing

  978. that's not

  979. something

  980. fundamentally

  981. different

  982. it's for

  983. Christians

  984. something we

  985. are called

  986. to see

  987. and enjoy

  988. we as

  989. Gentiles

  990. we've been

  991. engrafted

  992. into Israel

  993. and we

  994. received

  995. the exact

  996. same thing

  997. Old Testament

  998. Jews did

  999. grace

  1000. and peace

  1001. now I

  1002. grant to

  1003. you that

  1004. we here

  1005. today

  1006. we have

  1007. a fuller

  1008. understanding

  1009. of what

  1010. those things

  1011. are

  1012. we understand

  1013. grace

  1014. and peace

  1015. we understand

  1016. the grace

  1017. of God

  1018. in this

  1019. that while

  1020. we were still

  1021. sinners

  1022. God sent

  1023. his son

  1024. to die

  1025. for us

  1026. on the cross

  1027. for our sins

  1028. and we

  1029. understand

  1030. the peace

  1031. of God

  1032. in this

  1033. that our

  1034. high priest

  1035. has sat

  1036. down

  1037. at the right

  1038. hand

  1039. of the majesty

  1040. on high

  1041. there are no

  1042. more ceremonial

  1043. laws

  1044. there are no

  1045. more sacrifices

  1046. we simply

  1047. have

  1048. peace

  1049. and we're able

  1050. to come

  1051. boldly

  1052. before God's

  1053. throne

  1054. not as a

  1055. throne of

  1056. judgment

  1057. but as a

  1058. throne

  1059. of grace

  1060. Abraham

  1061. understood

  1062. these things

  1063. but he understood

  1064. them through

  1065. a veil

  1066. he understood

  1067. them by

  1068. shadows

  1069. he did not

  1070. fully understand

  1071. who Jesus

  1072. was

  1073. he saw

  1074. his shadow

  1075. coming

  1076. but he didn't

  1077. see his face

  1078. and we

  1079. have

  1080. we have

  1081. looked

  1082. upon

  1083. Jesus

  1084. Christ

  1085. and we

  1086. live on

  1087. this side

  1088. of Christ

  1089. death

  1090. and resurrection

  1091. and even

  1092. us today

  1093. here in

  1094. Edinburgh

  1095. we are able

  1096. to say

  1097. Jesus

  1098. Christ

  1099. has come

  1100. to us

  1101. today

  1102. to preach

  1103. grace

  1104. and peace

  1105. to us

  1106. sinners

  1107. but what we

  1108. should strive

  1109. to do

  1110. as a church

  1111. is to offer

  1112. grace

  1113. and peace

  1114. to each

  1115. other

  1116. we are

  1117. miserable

  1118. sinners

  1119. who have

  1120. been given

  1121. grace

  1122. and peace

  1123. from God

  1124. and we

  1125. gather

  1126. together

  1127. as a church

  1128. to hear

  1129. that grace

  1130. and peace

  1131. preached to

  1132. us

  1133. that we

  1134. may rejoice

  1135. in it

  1136. that we

  1137. may rest

  1138. in it

  1139. that we

  1140. may be

  1141. restored

  1142. by it

  1143. and then

  1144. what we

  1145. should do

  1146. is stand

  1147. up afterwards

  1148. and seek

  1149. to show

  1150. that grace

  1151. and peace

  1152. to each

  1153. other

  1154. we who

  1155. have been

  1156. filled

  1157. with grace

  1158. and peace

  1159. should have

  1160. it overflowing

  1161. into every

  1162. parts of

  1163. our lives

  1164. in equal

  1165. measure

  1166. what else

  1167. can we

  1168. do

  1169. a church

  1170. which

  1171. doesn't

  1172. teach

  1173. grace

  1174. and peace

  1175. is teaching

  1176. a different

  1177. gospel

  1178. and really

  1179. a different

  1180. savior

  1181. true gospel

  1182. ministry

  1183. deals with

  1184. grace and

  1185. peace

  1186. and it is

  1187. infectious

  1188. in the best

  1189. of ways

  1190. so we're

  1191. called as a

  1192. congregation

  1193. to bear

  1194. with each

  1195. other

  1196. in our

  1197. burdens

  1198. and also

  1199. to encourage

  1200. one another

  1201. because our

  1202. savior

  1203. he is a

  1204. never ending

  1205. fountain

  1206. of grace

  1207. and peace

  1208. but the

  1209. fourth and

  1210. final thing

  1211. Paul teaches

  1212. us here

  1213. is how to

  1214. think about

  1215. God

  1216. where does

  1217. grace and

  1218. peace come

  1219. from

  1220. from God

  1221. our father

  1222. and Christ

  1223. Jesus our

  1224. Lord

  1225. first

  1226. Paul here

  1227. is telling

  1228. us to

  1229. recognize

  1230. God is

  1231. our father

  1232. that is a

  1233. profoundly

  1234. Christian way

  1235. of talking

  1236. about God

  1237. the Old

  1238. Testament

  1239. has little

  1240. glimpses

  1241. of this

  1242. but they're

  1243. glimpses

  1244. you know

  1245. Israel

  1246. sometimes talked

  1247. about God

  1248. as a father

  1249. to all of

  1250. Israel

  1251. broadly

  1252. more specifically

  1253. some of the

  1254. Davidic kings

  1255. could say

  1256. God is acting

  1257. as a father

  1258. to me

  1259. but no

  1260. Israelite

  1261. opens up

  1262. their prayers

  1263. by saying

  1264. my father

  1265. that is a

  1266. dramatic change

  1267. in the New

  1268. Testament

  1269. when Jesus

  1270. teaches all

  1271. of his

  1272. disciples

  1273. to just

  1274. pray

  1275. his

  1276. prayer

  1277. our

  1278. father

  1279. who

  1280. art

  1281. in

  1282. heaven

  1283. that is a

  1284. profound

  1285. change

  1286. and we

  1287. see this

  1288. blossoming

  1289. of father

  1290. language

  1291. all throughout

  1292. we can see

  1293. this in

  1294. first John

  1295. three

  1296. one

  1297. see what

  1298. kind of

  1299. love the

  1300. father

  1301. has given

  1302. to us

  1303. that we

  1304. should be

  1305. called

  1306. children

  1307. of God

  1308. father

  1309. that's not

  1310. a throwaway

  1311. term

  1312. that is a

  1313. profound

  1314. important

  1315. term

  1316. it's

  1317. proclaiming

  1318. a deep

  1319. important

  1320. truth

  1321. this is a

  1322. special

  1323. grand

  1324. privilege

  1325. that we

  1326. have as

  1327. New Testament

  1328. believers

  1329. J.I.

  1330. Packer says

  1331. this is even

  1332. grander than

  1333. justification

  1334. and we all

  1335. know we're

  1336. big fans

  1337. of justification

  1338. but being

  1339. able to

  1340. call upon

  1341. God

  1342. as father

  1343. that is

  1344. profound

  1345. in the

  1346. Old Testament

  1347. what's the

  1348. highest way

  1349. to talk

  1350. about God

  1351. it's the

  1352. covenantal

  1353. name

  1354. Yahweh

  1355. I am

  1356. who I

  1357. am

  1358. but in

  1359. the New

  1360. Testament

  1361. it's just

  1362. to cry

  1363. out

  1364. Abba

  1365. father

  1366. that's

  1367. the most

  1368. profound

  1369. way you

  1370. can talk

  1371. about God

  1372. think about

  1373. the way

  1374. that should

  1375. affect the

  1376. way you

  1377. pray

  1378. we're able

  1379. to approach

  1380. God not

  1381. simply as a

  1382. servant

  1383. not even

  1384. as a highly

  1385. privileged

  1386. and forgiven

  1387. servant

  1388. but as a

  1389. son or

  1390. daughter

  1391. who is

  1392. eagerly

  1393. welcomed

  1394. in where

  1395. angels

  1396. fear to

  1397. tread

  1398. someone who

  1399. is where

  1400. they are

  1401. supposed to

  1402. be

  1403. in and

  1404. amongst

  1405. the family

  1406. we pray

  1407. not just

  1408. to a distant

  1409. God but

  1410. to our

  1411. father

  1412. who has

  1413. blessed us

  1414. with every

  1415. spiritual blessing

  1416. of the heavenly

  1417. places

  1418. and if you're

  1419. struggling and

  1420. you feel like

  1421. the entire

  1422. world is just

  1423. caving in around

  1424. you and you're

  1425. at the end of

  1426. your rope

  1427. you don't need

  1428. to sit there

  1429. and try to

  1430. come up with

  1431. the best

  1432. theological

  1433. phrases

  1434. in order to

  1435. pray to

  1436. God

  1437. in order that

  1438. he can hear

  1439. your plea

  1440. you just

  1441. need to

  1442. cry out

  1443. father

  1444. and that

  1445. is enough

  1446. prayer

  1447. is family

  1448. time

  1449. for Christians

  1450. and we

  1451. gather together

  1452. with our

  1453. father

  1454. but Paul

  1455. doesn't just

  1456. refer in these

  1457. verses to

  1458. God the

  1459. father

  1460. he also

  1461. talks about

  1462. God the

  1463. son

  1464. he talks

  1465. about

  1466. Jesus

  1467. Christ

  1468. our

  1469. Lord

  1470. that title

  1471. there

  1472. Lord

  1473. that is a

  1474. divine

  1475. title

  1476. Paul uses

  1477. that title

  1478. for God

  1479. generically

  1480. and he's

  1481. applying it

  1482. to Jesus

  1483. and he's

  1484. referring to

  1485. the father

  1486. and Jesus

  1487. in the same

  1488. breath as if

  1489. they are equals

  1490. because they

  1491. absolutely are

  1492. really what I

  1493. want you to

  1494. understand is that

  1495. Paul is a

  1496. Trinitarian

  1497. and you should

  1498. be too

  1499. and he's not a

  1500. Trinitarian

  1501. trying to show

  1502. off how much

  1503. he understands

  1504. and how he's

  1505. superior to

  1506. everyone

  1507. he's not trying

  1508. to show off

  1509. how he understands

  1510. that God is

  1511. three persons

  1512. father son and

  1513. holy ghost

  1514. yet one God

  1515. the Trinity

  1516. is confusing

  1517. it is confusing

  1518. because it is

  1519. mysterious

  1520. but Paul is

  1521. mentioning this

  1522. because he thinks

  1523. the Trinity

  1524. is tremendously

  1525. practical

  1526. when he talks

  1527. about the

  1528. blessings we

  1529. have from God

  1530. he talks about

  1531. the being

  1532. from the father

  1533. in Jesus Christ

  1534. by the spirit

  1535. that is him

  1536. trying to give

  1537. you words

  1538. to thank God

  1539. more precisely

  1540. he's trying

  1541. to give you

  1542. more to sing

  1543. about

  1544. not less

  1545. does that

  1546. just make

  1547. instinctive

  1548. sense

  1549. once you

  1550. think about

  1551. it

  1552. if

  1553. God has

  1554. truly

  1555. saved you

  1556. and adopted

  1557. you as his

  1558. child

  1559. and promised

  1560. that you

  1561. will commune

  1562. with him

  1563. in all eternity

  1564. face to face

  1565. don't you think

  1566. that we should

  1567. strive

  1568. to know him

  1569. all the better

  1570. and speak

  1571. of him

  1572. as he has

  1573. revealed himself

  1574. to us

  1575. we're called

  1576. as Christians

  1577. to know

  1578. and love

  1579. our father

  1580. and also

  1581. his son

  1582. Jesus Christ

  1583. our brother

  1584. and call

  1585. upon him

  1586. as well

  1587. and our duty

  1588. as Christians

  1589. is to declare

  1590. their worthiness

  1591. to worship

  1592. them

  1593. and to talk

  1594. about their worth

  1595. to the best

  1596. of our abilities

  1597. and we can't

  1598. do that

  1599. without seeking

  1600. to know God

  1601. as he has

  1602. revealed himself

  1603. in Jesus Christ

  1604. as father

  1605. son

  1606. and holy ghost

  1607. as we close

  1608. I want you

  1609. to look briefly

  1610. at the drum beat

  1611. of these two verses

  1612. Paul

  1613. an apostle

  1614. of Christ

  1615. of Christ

  1616. Jesus

  1617. by the will

  1618. of God

  1619. to the God's

  1620. holy people

  1621. in Ephesus

  1622. the faithful

  1623. in Christ

  1624. Jesus

  1625. grace and peace

  1626. to you

  1627. from God

  1628. our father

  1629. and the Lord

  1630. Jesus Christ

  1631. Jesus

  1632. is at the center

  1633. of these verses

  1634. and Paul

  1635. is bringing up

  1636. all these different

  1637. topics

  1638. about the Bible

  1639. yourself

  1640. ministry

  1641. and God

  1642. and he's relating

  1643. them to Jesus

  1644. because he wants

  1645. to tell you

  1646. who Jesus is

1647. and what he has done

  1648. and he wants

  1649. to see you

  1650. the rich

  1651. wants you to see

  1652. the riches

1653. that are in Jesus Christ

  1654. if you

  1655. if we've been

  1656. pulling up

  1657. these words

  1658. and looking

  1659. at the roots

  1660. underneath

  1661. and looking

  1662. at their structure

  1663. we need to realize

  1664. that these roots

  1665. are planted

  1666. in the soil

  1667. that is Jesus Christ

  1668. the whole point

  1669. of a root

  1670. is that you're

  1671. trying to get life

  1672. and nutrients

  1673. out of the soil

  1674. and Paul

  1675. is digging

  1676. these roots

  1677. into Jesus Christ

  1678. trying to get life

  1679. from Jesus

  1680. thinking about

  1681. the Bible

  1682. yourself

  1683. ministry

  1684. and even God

  1685. separated from Jesus

  1686. is disastrous

  1687. but with Jesus

  1688. they make all

  1689. the difference

  1690. with them

  1691. you get Jesus

  1692. and you get

  1693. the grace

  1694. and peace

  1695. you get

  1696. to enjoy

  1697. scripture

  1698. as the word

  1699. of Jesus himself

  1700. and you get

  1701. to come before

  1702. God

  1703. as father

  1704. to grow

  1705. as a Christian

  1706. we need

  1707. to have our roots

  1708. in Jesus Christ

1709. and he is the one

  1710. we must think about

  1711. really at the end

  1712. of the day

  1713. because he's

  1714. the whole point

  1715. not just of

  1716. Ephesians

  1717. but of everything

  1718. voy
