  1. So if you have a Bible, perhaps you could turn with me to Matthew chapter 5. It's on page 968 if you're using a church Bible.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. ! We're beginning a study as a church on this sermon, the most famous sermon ever delivered by Jesus called the Sermon on the Mount.

  3. We're looking at how he introduces the sermon in this section often known as the Beatitudes.

  4. And we're asking ourselves the question, how can I have a happy life?

  5. Blaise Pascal, the famous thinker, once said, all men seek happiness. That is without exception.

  6. We're all looking for happiness. What does it mean?

  7. The U.S. Declaration of Independence speaks about that right that people have to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

  8. Happiness. An American president, Ben Franklin, said, yes, we have the right to the pursuit, but each of us has to catch happiness ourselves.

  9. So what is it that we're chasing when we think about happiness?

  10. If I was to ask the room, in the same way as I was to ask the children, we'd probably get a lot of different answers.

  11. What is happiness?

  12. For some of us, perhaps, it's about the connections that we have.

  13. I skimmed through, every year there's a thing called the World Happiness Report.

  14. And this year, it was very much focusing on the ideas of caring and sharing.

  15. And happiness consists in the social connections that we have.

  16. Deep relationships.

  17. Perhaps that's where we look for happiness.

  18. But that's not the only answer, is it?

  19. Because for some people, happiness lies in consuming.

  20. Now, whether that's ice cream, whether that's a barbecue in the meadows, consumption is something we often think about as giving us happiness.

  21. Joy is a marketing tool.

  22. 93% of people, when asked, were on a quest for more joy.

  23. And so there's a whole load of advertising campaigns that became famous, especially in the early 2000s.

  24. People seeking, here's the way.

  25. If you're looking for more joy, what you need is to buy my product, to eat my foods.

  26. Maybe for us, though, happiness is connected to the cash in our pocket.

  27. The council did some statistics in this neighborhood, so the south side Newington neighborhood.

  28. And 17% of people who were polled said that money is the best measure of a person's success and happiness.

  29. So if you believe that, then that's obviously the thing that you're going to look to catch.

  30. We all seek happiness, and God has made us that way.

  31. But the really important question becomes, well, what is that happiness?

  32. What is ultimate happiness?

  33. What is that thing that I'm going to give my life to?

  34. Or maybe to put it another way, who defines happiness for me?

  35. Is it myself, or do I listen to someone else?

  36. And that takes us to this sermon, the most famous sermon ever preached,

  37. the most famous document on ethics and morality, I think, that the world has.

  38. And it begins with the question, what is the blessed life?

  39. What is the happy life according to God?

  40. And Jesus' answer is really striking.

  41. So one thing that you maybe noticed is that for Jesus, this life of blessing or happiness,

  42. it's about character.

  43. Jesus talks about our heart, a way of life that's changed,

  44. because we've found salvation, because we've found Jesus.

  45. But happiness is also connected to the idea of covenant.

  46. This whole idea of blessing is the blessing of a life

  47. where you know you're in a right relationship with God.

  48. You know that there is forgiveness and He is your Father.

  49. Jesus says that's what the happy life looks like.

  50. And so we find in verses 1 and 2,

  51. Jesus going up on a mountainside and sitting down to teach.

  52. Just like in the Old Testament, in the book of Exodus,

  53. you find Moses going up on a mountain to receive and then to give God's law.

  54. Here is Jesus up on a mountain delivering God's word about God's kingdom.

  55. Here is what it looks like to live under the rule of Jesus as God's king.

  56. And so for the next few months,

  57. we're going to think about this sermon,

  58. runs from chapters 5 to 7 of Matthew's gospel.

  59. It's going to teach us.

  60. So whether we're a follower of Jesus,

  61. or whether we're curious about Christianity,

  62. it's going to teach us,

  63. what is it like to be a follower of Jesus?

  64. How is the kingdom of God a different way of life?

  65. I imagine at different points this sermon,

  66. even if we're familiar with it,

  67. the words of Jesus are going to shock us.

  68. Because it's very much a counter-cultural message.

  69. Jesus presents here, for example,

  70. a vision of happiness that's very different

  71. from expectations,

  72. very different to what most people are looking for today.

  73. And I hope as well that this sermon,

  74. the Sermon on the Mount will inspire us.

  75. Because it shows us,

  76. the words of Jesus show us that the transforming power of God

  77. can absolutely change us,

  78. change our way of life,

  79. even change our idea of what is true happiness.

  80. So this morning for a few minutes,

  81. we're going to take the happiness question to Jesus,

  82. and we're going to listen to his answer.

  83. And we're going to do that thinking about three simple words, okay?

  84. We're going to think about grace,

  85. and then we're going to think about God,

  86. and then we're going to think about glory.

  87. So if you remember those words,

  88. you'll hopefully remember where we're going.

  89. So we're thinking first about grace.

  90. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  91. Jesus begins,

  92. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  93. I wonder,

  94. there's a picture up there of what's known as recycled art.

  95. And I wonder if you've ever seen

  96. either these small micro-enterprise projects

  97. in Africa or in Asia,

  98. where crafts people are able to turn

  99. old rubbish,

  100. recycled plastics and cans,

  101. into a piece of art that they can then sell.

  102. With the eye and the skill of a craftsman,

  103. as something broken and worthless,

  104. can become something beautiful.

  105. And Jesus begins his reflections on the happy life here.

  106. A happy life discovers the power of God's grace

  107. to bring beauty from brokenness.

  108. The brokenness of verse 3,

  109. blessed are the poor in spirit.

  110. Those who are broken and know that they've come to an end of themselves

  111. and have learned to totally depend on God.

  112. That that idea that we have the ability

  113. and we have the answers by ourselves,

  114. that's been broken in their life.

  115. Verse 4,

  116. blessed are those who mourn.

  117. Blessed are those who feel a sense of brokenness

  118. over the sin in our life

  119. and the suffering and the sorrow that it brings.

  120. Verse 5,

  121. blessed are the meek.

  122. Pride has been broken.

  123. Self-reliance is gone,

  124. replaced by humility.

  125. Being willing to be small before God.

  126. But do you notice how in Jesus' hands,

  127. by God's grace,

  128. brokenness can be turned into something beautiful.

  129. What's the beauty that God's grace brings?

  130. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  131. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  132. The follower of Jesus enjoys life in the kingdom of God,

  133. life with God now,

  134. with the promise of that for eternity.

  135. Blessed are those who mourn.

  136. Here's the beauty.

  137. For they will be comforted.

  138. The beautiful truth of knowing we are forgiven and reconciled to God.

  139. Blessed are the meek,

  140. for they will inherit the earth.

  141. There's this beautiful message of being remade

  142. in the image of the Lord Jesus,

  143. so that one day,

  144. we will rule in a world made new with Him.

  145. See how this is a very different message of happiness compared to the world.

  146. Our society might say something like,

  147. blessed are the rich and powerful,

  148. because everything they could ever want.

  149. Blessed are the comfortable and the entertained,

  150. because pleasure is right there at their fingertips.

  151. Or blessed are the ones who are true to themselves

  152. and make themselves number one,

  153. because nothing and no one holds them back.

  154. So often our ideas about happiness,

  155. if they're not shaped by the Bible,

  156. will be about now,

  157. rather than be about the future.

  158. Our ideas of happiness will tend to be centered on the self.

  159. It's the idea of big me.

  160. And we miss the wonder of a big God.

  161. So to believe what Jesus teaches,

  162. that this is the way to the happy life,

  163. is an uphill battle.

  164. And it's a daily uphill battle.

  165. And to live this way,

  166. we need God's grace.

  167. In all of the Beatitudes,

  168. Jesus is painting a portrait.

  169. Here is a life,

  170. here is a character of a person

  171. who has been saved

  172. by God's free kindness to us

  173. in the Lord Jesus.

  174. Here is the picture of a life

  175. of someone who's been changed

  176. and they're enjoying life with Jesus.

  177. And maybe even as we were reading

  178. this description,

  179. we were thinking,

  180. well, that seems impossible.

  181. My life seems so far away from that.

  182. All I see,

  183. all I sense is

  184. my own brokenness.

  185. Or perhaps we look around

  186. and we struggle to believe

  187. that God could change anyone else

  188. because all we see is there

  189. brokenness.

  190. And what we need to see

  191. and what Jesus gives us a vision of

  192. is the God of grace

  193. who is the master craftsman,

  194. who is able

  195. and who is working his people

  196. into the image of Jesus,

  197. who is transforming hearts

  198. and he is working this process

  199. that will be complete

  200. in the kingdom of heaven.

  201. And Jesus says to us,

  202. the happy life

  203. is a life of depending

  204. on God.

  205. It's a life of repenting

  206. of sin.

  207. It's a life of humbling

  208. ourselves before God.

  209. And he promises this brings

  210. future blessings

  211. into our present.

  212. That we can live knowing

  213. we're in the family of God.

  214. We can live free of guilt

  215. with the comfort of forgiveness.

  216. And we can live with security

  217. because of a promised inheritance.

  218. And all because of God's grace.

  219. Not because of something

  220. we've done to earn it

  221. or deserve it.

  222. I think Jesus wonderfully

  223. pictures this for us

  224. in maybe the most famous story

  225. he told.

  226. The story of the prodigal son.

  227. And that story of the son

  228. who rebelled against his father

  229. wanted nothing to do

  230. with his father.

  231. Said,

  232. Father I can't wait

  233. till you're dead.

  234. Give me my share of the money.

  235. And he went off

  236. and he wasted his money.

  237. And eventually

  238. he hit rock bottom.

  239. He got to that point

  240. where he was poor in spirit.

  241. Where he did mourn

  242. over his sin.

  243. And he came to his senses.

  244. I'm going to go home.

  245. And I'm going to confess.

  246. And as he went home

  247. what did he find?

  248. He found a father

  249. offering a joyful welcome.

  250. He found that he was

  251. restored to the family.

  252. That riches and honour

  253. became his.

  254. That he found literally

  255. his famine

  256. turned to a feast.

  257. And all because

  258. of God's grace.

  259. Ray Ortlund is a Bible teacher

  260. from the States

  261. and he's got a book.

  262. A new book called

  263. Good News at Rock Bottom.

  264. It doesn't sound like good news

  265. does it?

  266. But the good news

  267. when we find ourselves

  268. at rock bottom

  269. he says

  270. is that Jesus

  271. meets us there.

  272. When our life

  273. gets hard

  274. and discouraging

  275. when we find ourselves

  276. with that sense

  277. of our own poverty

  278. and mourning

  279. Jesus meets us there

  280. to show us grace.

  281. one of our mission partners

  282. working in Columbia

  283. is Manuel

  284. many of us

  285. know him well

  286. and I was speaking

  287. with him this week

  288. and he was speaking

  289. about the joy

  290. that he has

  291. in his everyday ministry

  292. of seeing

  293. the beauty

  294. of what happens

  295. when God's truth

  296. breaks in

  297. to a person's life

  298. where instead of despair

  299. now there's hope.

  300. where instead of being

  301. just wrecked

  302. by guilt

  303. now there's an understanding

  304. of the gospel

  305. of forgiveness.

  306. He talked about

  307. the joy

  308. of being a spectator

  309. of God's powerful

  310. transforming work.

  311. Our God

  312. is a God

  313. of grace

  314. who can bring

  315. beauty

  316. where there was

  317. brokenness.

  318. I wonder today

  319. have we found

  320. are we living

  321. in

  322. this happiness

  323. because we know

  324. this God.

  325. So that's grace.

  326. That's our first word.

  327. The second word

  328. very basic

  329. is the word

  330. God.

  331. Verse 6

  332. here's another one

  333. of our Beatitudes.

  334. Blessed are those

  335. who hunger

  336. and thirst

  337. for righteousness

  338. for they will

  339. be filled.

  340. I met a friend

  341. last week

  342. who I hadn't seen

  343. for many years.

  344. He's French

  345. and we were chatting

  346. about life

  347. and how things were

  348. and we concluded

  349. after a while

  350. by observing

  351. that happiness

  352. is a cup

  353. of French coffee

  354. and a nice

  355. warm croissant

  356. to start the day.

  357. It's happiness

  358. isn't it?

  359. Even talking

  360. about it

  361. served to

  362. increase appetite

  363. and can't wait

  364. for the next trip

  365. because that means

  366. the next taste.

  367. Right at the center

  368. of the Beatitudes

  369. Jesus connects

  370. these ideas

  371. of happiness

  372. and hunger.

  373. And what he says

  374. to us here

  375. is that a happy

  376. life has discovered

  377. a new appetite

  378. for God.

  379. That his worship

  380. his ways

  381. his will

  382. that's the appetite

  383. that we want

  384. to be filled.

  385. Bruce Springsteen

  386. is a great singer

  387. songwriter

  388. and a great psychologist.

  389. He said

  390. everybody

  391. has a hungry heart.

  392. And that's a really

  393. good point.

  394. I think that's

  395. a biblical point.

  396. We are all

  397. looking for

  398. something

  399. to satisfy us.

  400. And sometimes

  401. we have those

  402. great moments

  403. of joy

  404. when we find

  405. ourselves saying

  406. this is it

  407. this is the thing.

  408. This is what

  409. I was made for.

  410. This is the person

  411. who makes me

  412. feel happy.

  413. It can come

  414. in lots of different ways.

  415. It might be a role

  416. or a responsibility

  417. that we have

  418. in our workplace.

  419. It might be

  420. a subject

  421. that we come

  422. to study

  423. and we get

  424. really into it.

  425. It might be

  426. a new friendship

  427. or a relationship.

  428. It might be

  429. the place

  430. that we live

  431. the home

  432. that we make.

  433. If you've ever

  434. had that experience

  435. again

  436. it's because

  437. this is

  438. how we were made.

  439. We were made

  440. for joy.

  441. We were made

  442. to be worshippers.

  443. God has made us

  444. that we would

  445. build our life

  446. around

  447. something.

  448. And the Bible

  449. teaches us

  450. actually that

  451. the one thing

  452. to build our life

  453. on

  454. is God

  455. and life

  456. with Him.

  457. That knowing

  458. God

  459. that would be

  460. the great goal

  461. that would lead us

  462. to sacrifice

  463. joyfully

  464. to commit

  465. wholeheartedly

  466. the goal

  467. that directs

  468. our lives.

  469. But our human

  470. problem

  471. is that while

  472. we are all made

  473. to worship

  474. and ultimately

  475. to worship

  476. God

  477. our heart

  478. curves inward.

  479. So instead of

  480. worship going up

  481. to God

  482. so often

  483. it comes back

  484. into ourselves

  485. and so we find

  486. ourselves redirecting

  487. our worship.

  488. So we're still

  489. looking for happiness

  490. we're still looking

  491. for an ultimate thing

  492. but now we've taken

  493. God out of the picture.

  494. And so we might

  495. find ourselves

  496. following the message

  497. of the ad campaigns

  498. or the message

  499. of culture.

  500. You know just

  501. you do you

  502. or be whatever

  503. you want

  504. and just

  505. you know

  506. get as much

  507. as you can

  508. because that's

  509. what life's

  510. all about.

  511. Those hungry

  512. hearts of ours

  513. they're often

  514. too easily

  515. satisfied.

  516. What we fill

  517. our lives with

  518. is often

  519. far more

  520. me-centered

  521. than it is

  522. God-centered.

  523. And when we've

  524. lived that way

  525. I expect

  526. like me

  527. you find

  528. it leaves

  529. us

  530. with a

  531. sense

  532. of

  533. emptiness.

  534. I'm

  535. spending

  536. I'm

  537. consuming

  538. I'm

  539. sacrificing

  540. but it

  541. never seems

  542. enough

  543. it never

  544. feels

  545. enough

  546. the joy

  547. never

  548. seems

  549. to last.

  550. There is

  551. no lasting

  552. satisfaction

  553. because we

  554. were made

  555. for more.

  556. It's that

  557. God-shaped

  558. hole.

  559. And so

  560. Jesus has

  561. come

  562. to change

  563. our appetite

  564. and to

  565. teach us

  566. about the

  567. appetite

  568. that we

  569. should look

  570. to satisfy.

  571. And again

  572. this is not

  573. what naturally

  574. drives our

  575. lives.

  576. Happy are

  577. those who

  578. hunger

  579. and thirst

  580. for righteousness

  581. for they will

  582. be filled.

  583. What does

  584. Jesus mean?

  585. That what we

  586. want more

  587. than anything

  588. is to be

  589. right with

  590. God

  591. and to

  592. stay right

  593. with God

  594. day by day.

  595. That's what

  596. I'm hungry

  597. for.

  598. to

  599. couple it

  600. with verse

  601. seven

  602. blessed

  603. to the

  604. merciful

  605. for they

  606. will be

  607. shown

  608. mercy

  609. by God's

  610. grace.

  611. Here's

  612. the appetite

  613. I want

  614. to pursue

  615. to do

  616. God's

  617. will

  618. and to

  619. do

  620. God's

  621. work.

  622. To

  623. pursue

  624. life

  625. with God

  626. living

  627. God's

  628. way

  629. and to

  630. show

  631. mercy

  632. to

  633. others.

  634. Jesus

  635. is saying

  636. there is

  637. a happiness

  638. to be

  639. found

  640. when we

  641. come to

  642. an end

  643. of ourselves

  644. and when

  645. our hearts

  646. are turned

  647. up

  648. and out

  649. when we

  650. look outside

  651. ourselves

  652. to Jesus

  653. Christ.

  654. When that

  655. happens we

  656. find that

  657. he does

  658. meet our

  659. needs.

  660. We are

  661. satisfied.

  662. We are

  663. filled

  664. with

  665. God's

  666. glory.

  667. We see

  668. the glory

  669. of God

  670. and he

  671. has shown

  672. us mercy

  673. so he

  674. helps us

  675. to show

  676. mercy

  677. to others.

  678. So Jesus

  679. here in the

  680. Beatitudes

  681. he's giving

  682. us this

  683. glorious

  684. picture

  685. of a

  686. heart

  687. and a

  688. life

  689. restored

  690. to God's

  691. original

  692. creation

  693. design.

  694. And you

  695. know if

  696. God worked

  697. this in

  698. us

  699. and if

  700. God by

  701. his spirit

  702. worked the

  703. truth of

  704. his word

  705. into our

  706. hearts we

  707. would be a

  708. transformed

  709. people.

  710. We would

  711. be a

  712. community

  713. known for

  714. our joy

  715. in Jesus

  716. because he

  717. would be

  718. who we'd

  719. be hungry

  720. for.

  721. We would

  722. want more

  723. of God's

  724. word.

  725. Your coming

  726. to worship

  727. would be a

  728. great joy

  729. as well as

  730. being a

  731. duty.

  732. We would

  733. be eager

  734. to spend

  735. time with

  736. God in

  737. prayer.

  738. We would

  739. love to

  740. gather

  741. together

  742. with God's

  743. people to

  744. worship.

  745. We would

  746. be so

  747. excited about

  748. the joy

  749. of sharing

  750. fellowship and

  751. getting to

  752. serve alongside

  753. brothers and

  754. sisters in

  755. Christ.

  756. Do we

  757. believe that

  758. God can

  759. change our

  760. hearts that

  761. way to

  762. make us

  763. that

  764. community?

  765. Again,

  766. maybe we

  767. see naturally

  768. this is an

  769. uphill battle

  770. because our

  771. hearts are so

  772. easily satisfied

  773. and you

  774. think about the

  775. time that we

  776. live in.

  777. We live in

  778. what's known as

  779. the age of

  780. distraction.

  781. Maybe

  782. especially for

  783. those who

  784. are younger.

  785. Modern

  786. technology can

  787. keep us

  788. constantly

  789. busy,

  790. always

  791. connected,

  792. always

  793. entertained,

  794. always

  795. distracted.

  796. How often do

  797. we find

  798. ourselves with

  799. that sense of

  800. regret?

  801. man,

  802. I've just

  803. spent ages

  804. settling for

  805. the equivalent

  806. of junk

  807. food when

  808. Jesus invites

  809. us to come

  810. to the

  811. feast.

  812. We need

  813. to pray that

  814. we would want

  815. to give time

  816. and attention

  817. to Scripture

  818. and to our

  819. Savior instead

  820. of to endless

  821. scrolling.

  822. That just as

  823. cultivating a

  824. healthy diet

  825. physically is a

  826. battle for so

  827. many of us,

  828. spiritually we

  829. need to

  830. understand we

  831. are in a

  832. battle for

  833. our hearts.

  834. That we

  835. would taste

  836. and see

  837. that God

  838. is good.

  839. Jesus'

  840. words challenge

  841. us.

  842. If we're

  843. Christians,

  844. is this my

  845. appetite?

  846. Think about

  847. how we've

  848. spent our

  849. time in

  850. this past

  851. week.

  852. Does it

  853. reflect a

  854. hunger and

  855. thirst for

  856. righteousness?

  857. To what

  858. extent am I

  859. letting Jesus'

  860. words shape

  861. how I

  862. parent or

  863. my approach

  864. to work

  865. or to

  866. study?

  867. Am I

  868. committing to

  869. a church

  870. community that

  871. will help

  872. me to grow

  873. this healthy

  874. appetite?

  875. Even ask

  876. the question,

  877. where do

  878. these eight

  879. character traits

  880. fit in my

  881. list of

  882. priorities?

  883. Do I want

  884. to look like

  885. this by God's

  886. grace?

  887. God's

  888. Maybe one

  889. way this

  890. word will

  891. hit us is

  892. that we'll

  893. ask God

  894. today,

  895. give me a

  896. new appetite

  897. for you and

  898. for your

  899. word,

  900. that we

  901. wouldn't be

  902. satisfied with

  903. less than a

  904. joyful life

  905. in Jesus.

  906. Okay, so we

  907. thought about

  908. grace, and

  909. we thought

  910. about God.

  911. The one

  912. last word

  913. that we're

  914. going to

  915. think about

  916. is the

  917. word glory.

  918. glory.

  919. And that

  920. takes us to

  921. verse 8,

  922. and this

  923. beatitude,

  924. blessed are

  925. the pure in

  926. heart, for

  927. they will see

  928. God.

  929. Just to

  930. return to the

  931. idea of the

  932. moment of

  933. finding the

  934. one, the

  935. one person

  936. or the one

  937. thing, that

  938. thing that

  939. makes me

  940. happy, when

  941. we make

  942. that discovery,

  943. what happens

  944. in our

  945. lives?

  946. We understand

  947. that we

  948. find the

  949. one,

  950. it changes

  951. us.

  952. We will

  953. then find

  954. ourselves

  955. sacrificing

  956. for the

  957. sake of

  958. that person,

  959. and we

  960. will do

  961. it gladly.

  962. We will

  963. spend our

  964. energies and

  965. our resources

  966. for that

  967. job that

  968. we love.

  969. We'll

  970. sacrifice

  971. easily.

  972. We will

  973. commit our

  974. lives to

  975. that person

  976. or that

  977. thing, and

  978. the people

  979. around us

  980. know it.

  981. our

  982. identity

  983. becomes

  984. shaped

  985. by the

  986. one.

  987. Now, why

  988. does that

  989. happen?

  990. Because it

  991. does happen,

  992. doesn't it?

  993. Well, it's

  994. all to do

  995. with this

  996. idea of

  997. glory.

  998. The biblical

  999. word glory

  1000. is the idea

  1001. of something

  1002. having weight,

  1003. weightiness in

  1004. our lives.

  1005. That

  1006. boyfriend or

  1007. that girlfriend,

  1008. that sport or

  1009. that hobby,

  1010. that job,

  1011. it comes to

  1012. have weight

  1013. in our

  1014. life.

  1015. And when

  1016. Jesus says,

  1017. blessed to the

  1018. pure in

  1019. heart, for

  1020. they will

  1021. see God,

  1022. he's saying,

  1023. a happy

  1024. life has

  1025. discovered

  1026. ultimate

  1027. glory in

  1028. Jesus and

  1029. his gospel.

  1030. Jesus has

  1031. ultimate

  1032. weight.

  1033. And that

  1034. gives us

  1035. joy when we

  1036. discover it.

  1037. love.

  1038. The idea

  1039. of blessed

  1040. to the

  1041. pure in

  1042. heart, that's

  1043. a theme

  1044. from Psalm

  1045. 24.

  1046. In Psalm

  1047. 24, we

  1048. have this

  1049. idea of

  1050. the person

  1051. who is

  1052. pure in

  1053. heart, and

  1054. that heart

  1055. is not

  1056. undecided on

  1057. the worship

  1058. question.

  1059. The happy

  1060. heart knows

  1061. God is

  1062. Lord, he

  1063. deserves

  1064. worship, I'm

  1065. not going to

  1066. settle for a

  1067. God substitute,

  1068. I'm not

  1069. going to

  1070. settle for

  1071. anything

  1072. less.

  1073. So the

  1074. happy heart

  1075. is not

  1076. undecided, and

  1077. the happy

  1078. heart is

  1079. undivided.

  1080. To be

  1081. pure in

  1082. heart, it

  1083. is to be

  1084. undivided.

  1085. God and

  1086. his glory,

  1087. that's the

  1088. target I'm

  1089. going to

  1090. aim for with

  1091. laser-like

  1092. precision.

  1093. That's the

  1094. goal I'm

  1095. going to

  1096. follow and

  1097. to sacrifice

  1098. for.

  1099. And by

  1100. God's

  1101. grace, he

  1102. works in

  1103. our hearts,

  1104. so we

  1105. come to

  1106. see Jesus

  1107. is a

  1108. glorious

  1109. saviour.

  1110. The good

  1111. news that

  1112. sinful people

  1113. like us can

  1114. have peace

  1115. with God

  1116. through what

  1117. Jesus did

  1118. on the

  1119. cross, that's

  1120. glorious.

  1121. That God

  1122. would show

  1123. us mercy,

  1124. though we

  1125. don't deserve

  1126. it, that's

  1127. wonderful and

  1128. glorious.

  1129. It's the best

  1130. message, it's

  1131. the happiest

  1132. news we'll

  1133. ever hear.

  1134. So much

  1135. so, verse

  1136. 10 to

  1137. 12, not

  1138. even

  1139. persecution

  1140. will be

  1141. enough to

  1142. steal that

  1143. joy away or

  1144. make us

  1145. give up

  1146. Jesus.

  1147. The pure

  1148. heart wills

  1149. one thing,

  1150. nothing will

  1151. get in the

  1152. way of

  1153. Jesus.

  1154. You'll think

  1155. about maybe

  1156. if you go

  1157. to the

  1158. theatre, you

  1159. go to watch

  1160. a sporting

  1161. event and

  1162. you end up

  1163. sitting behind

  1164. the person

  1165. with the,

  1166. he's really

  1167. tall, or you

  1168. sit behind a

  1169. pillar, you

  1170. know the

  1171. frustration of

  1172. having an

  1173. obstructed

  1174. view.

  1175. The Christian

  1176. won't tolerate

  1177. an obstructed

  1178. view of

  1179. Jesus.

  1180. We want to

  1181. see his

  1182. glory.

  1183. Think about

  1184. Zacchaeus.

  1185. Wonderful story

  1186. of Zacchaeus.

  1187. Zacchaeus was a

  1188. very small man

  1189. and a very

  1190. hated man.

  1191. He knew

  1192. Jesus was

  1193. coming through

  1194. his time, he

  1195. wanted to see

  1196. Jesus.

  1197. The crowd

  1198. wouldn't let

  1199. him get

  1200. through, so

  1201. what he did,

  1202. what no man

  1203. of his age and

  1204. status would

  1205. do, he

  1206. climbed a

  1207. tree.

  1208. He faced

  1209. the hatred

  1210. of the

  1211. crowd because

  1212. he wanted

  1213. to see

  1214. Jesus.

  1215. He wanted

  1216. an unobstructed

  1217. view of

  1218. Jesus, the

  1219. King of

  1220. glory, and

  1221. when he

  1222. saw it, he

  1223. discovered

  1224. Jesus, invite

  1225. him, show

  1226. him hospitality,

  1227. and show him

  1228. saving grace.

  1229. He was

  1230. changed because

  1231. he had that

  1232. desire in his

  1233. heart to see

  1234. the glory of

  1235. Jesus.

  1236. This is the

  1237. ultimate reward.

  1238. verse 8,

  1239. blessed to

  1240. the pure in

  1241. heart for

  1242. they will

  1243. see God.

  1244. How do we

  1245. see God?

  1246. We see God

  1247. in Jesus.

  1248. Jesus makes

  1249. the glory of

  1250. God visible.

  1251. And what we

  1252. need is for

  1253. God by his

  1254. grace to open

  1255. our eyes to

  1256. the glory and

  1257. the beauty of

  1258. Jesus so we

  1259. would live for

  1260. him with real

  1261. happiness.

  1262. happiness.

  1263. See, at the

  1264. end of the

  1265. day, these

  1266. beatitudes, as

  1267. much as God

  1268. is working in

  1269. our character to

  1270. make us more

  1271. and more like

  1272. this, they're

  1273. also at the

  1274. same time a

  1275. perfect portrait

  1276. of the perfect

  1277. character of

  1278. Jesus.

  1279. The Sermon on

  1280. the Mount

  1281. begins with

  1282. Jesus climbing

  1283. a hill.

  1284. The story of

  1285. Jesus will

  1286. climax with

  1287. Jesus going up

  1288. another hill,

  1289. the hill of

  1290. Calvary, the

  1291. place of the

  1292. cross.

  1293. And as we

  1294. look to that

  1295. hill, there we

  1296. see Jesus, the

  1297. one who was

  1298. persecuted for

  1299. righteousness

  1300. sake.

  1301. We see Jesus

  1302. humble himself

  1303. to pursue the

  1304. Father's will,

  1305. willingly making

  1306. himself nothing

  1307. to go on

  1308. God's rescue

  1309. mission.

  1310. for sinners.

  1311. We see the

  1312. pure heart of

  1313. Jesus, determined

  1314. to carry out

  1315. that plan to

  1316. clean our

  1317. sin-stained

  1318. heart.

  1319. We see Jesus

  1320. mourning over

  1321. sin as he

  1322. prepared to go

  1323. up that hill,

  1324. but we know

  1325. that as he dies

  1326. and rises.

  1327. He can give us

  1328. the joy of

  1329. forgiveness as

  1330. he bore the

  1331. penalty for

  1332. sin on our

  1333. behalf.

  1334. Jesus came as

  1335. the ultimate

  1336. peacemaker,

  1337. making peace by

  1338. his blood shed

  1339. on the cross.

  1340. Jesus is the

  1341. ultimate one who

  1342. shows us

  1343. mercy.

  1344. He meets our

  1345. deepest need in

  1346. his life and

  1347. death and

  1348. resurrection.

  1349. resurrection.

  1350. Jesus is the

  1351. one who takes

  1352. God's curse so

  1353. that you and I

  1354. can live this

  1355. blessed life in

  1356. him and with

  1357. God.

  1358. Jesus suffered

  1359. and died so

  1360. that you and I

  1361. could live a

  1362. truly happy life

  1363. today and for

  1364. all eternity

  1365. because we know

  1366. him as Savior and

  1367. God as our

  1368. Father.

  1369. Father.

  1370. And as we let

  1371. the glory of

  1372. Jesus capture

  1373. our hearts,

  1374. that's when he

  1375. transforms our

  1376. lives, making

  1377. something beautiful

  1378. out of something

  1379. broken, causing

  1380. us to long for

  1381. and to live for

  1382. the glory of

  1383. God.

  1384. Amen.
