  1. Good morning, church. Let us turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 14, verse 1 to 25,

    1 Corinthians 14:1–25

  2. where the Bible verse talks about building up the church through gifts, for this is the way of love.

  3. Starting in verse 1, we read,

  4. Pursue love and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

  5. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the spirit.

  6. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

  7. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

  8. Now, I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy.

  9. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets so that the church may be built up.

  10. Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues,

  11. how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?

  12. If even lifeless instruments such as flute or the harp do not give distinct notes,

  13. how will anyone know what is played?

  14. And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?

  15. So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible,

  16. how will anyone know what is said?

  17. For you will be speaking into the air.

  18. There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning.

  19. But if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker,

  20. and the speaker a foreigner to me.

  21. So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit,

  22. strive to excel in building up the church.

  23. Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.

  24. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

  25. What am I to do?

  26. I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also.

  27. I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

  28. Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit,

  29. how can anyone in the position of an outsider say amen to your thanksgiving

  30. when he does not know what you are saying?

  31. For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up.

  32. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

  33. Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others

  34. than ten thousand words in a tongue.

  35. Brothers, do not be children in your thinking.

  36. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking, be mature.

  37. If the law is written,

  38. by people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to these people,

  39. and even then they will not listen to me.

  40. Says the Lord.

  41. Thus, tongues are assigned not for believers, but for unbelievers,

  42. while prophecy is assigned not for unbelievers, but for believers.

  43. If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues,

  44. and outsiders or unbelievers enter,

  45. will they not say that you are out of your minds?

  46. But if in all prophesy, an unbeliever or outsider enters,

  47. he will be convicted by all.

  48. He will be called to account by all.

  49. The secrets of his heart are disclosed,

  50. and so falling on his face,

  51. he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

  52. This is the word of God.

  53. Great.

  54. Thank you, CK.

  55. Thank you for not an easy reading,

  56. but hey, let's pray,

  57. and let's ask God to make his word real and alive and understandable to us.

  58. Father, as we come to your word,

  59. we want to know what your word is.

  60. We are not interested in the opinions of man.

  61. We want to have clarity, God,

  62. on what Paul was saying to Corinthians,

  63. and therefore what you are saying to us.

  64. And so help us, God, to understand this.

  65. Help me, God, to explain it.

  66. God, again, if there's anything that I say that is not of you,

  67. may fall in deaf ears, God.

  68. We want to,

  69. and Lord, if there's anything that I haven't prepared,

  70. but you want to say to us,

  71. you speak to us, God.

  72. The most important thing today is you speak to us.

  73. And so let your word come alive in our minds,

  74. but also in our hearts, I pray.

  75. In your wonderful and great name.

  76. Amen.

  77. Amen.

  78. Okay, if you are new to Watermark this morning,

  79. for the last couple of weeks,

  80. we've been working through the final,

  81. the end chapters of the book of 1 Corinthians,

  82. which is the Apostle Paul's letter to the Corinthian church.

  83. And we've been looking at these chapters

  84. because they're probably the most prolific chapters

  85. the New Testament has on spiritual gifts.

  86. We as a church want to grow in our understanding,

  87. in our knowledge of what the Bible says,

  88. and our practice of spiritual gifts.

  89. And so we want to come to God's word,

  90. say, what does God have to say?

  91. We are not particularly interested

  92. in what the church down the road has to say.

  93. We want to know what God's word says.

  94. And so we've been looking at this.

  95. And so far, we've seen two main things.

  96. We've seen one,

  97. that God's word says the church is a body.

  98. We all have diverse and different gifts,

  99. like a physical body,

  100. that we all have a role to play.

  101. And so nobody in the church can look at somebody else and say,

  102. I have no need of you.

  103. None of the, we all need each other.

  104. And then secondly, we saw the importance of love.

  105. Last week, we looked at probably the most important chapter,

  106. probably the most famous chapter in the Bible,

  107. maybe one of the most misunderstood.

  108. 1 Corinthians 13,

  109. love is patient, love is kind,

  110. it does not boast, it does not envy.

  111. And we saw that has nothing to do with marriage,

  112. or dating relationships per se,

  113. even though that is good advice for dating relationships as well.

  114. We saw it has to do with the church community.

  115. This is, Paul says,

  116. this is the sign of a healthy and a mature church.

  117. One where the relationships are marked by patience and kindness.

  118. This is what the Corinthians were not.

  119. And so Paul writes to us and says,

  120. the most important thing in this whole discussion about spiritual gifts is,

  121. do we love one another?

  122. It doesn't matter how gifted you are,

  123. how miraculous abilities God gives you,

  124. how well you can explain the Bible,

  125. how much money you put in the offering.

  126. The most important mark and sign of a mature and healthy church is,

  127. how loving, how gracious, how Christ-like are we?

  128. And that's what we've seen so far.

  129. Christian maturity is not marked by how long you've been a Christian,

  130. how much you know, how much you do,

  131. but how much our hearts are like Christ,

  132. how much our character is being transformed.

  133. And so that's where we've been so far.

  134. Now you'll notice,

  135. Paul hasn't answered the Corinthians' questions at all.

  136. He's just been giving them foundational principles.

  137. He's wanting to lay the foundations.

  138. And today he gets a little bit more into some of the practicalities.

  139. He's still not immensely practical,

  140. but today a little further.

  141. And so in the passage today,

  142. there's two sections.

  143. Verses 1 to 19 talk about spiritual gifts and the Christian church.

  144. And verses 20 to 25 talk about spiritual gifts and our Christian witness.

  145. Okay, so two sections.

  146. Spiritual gifts and the Christian church.

  147. Spiritual gifts and our Christian witness.

  148. Let's look at those two passages,

  149. two sections together.

  150. So firstly,

  151. spiritual gifts and the Christian church.

  152. In this section,

  153. 1 to 19,

  154. Paul is wanting to compare and contrast two types of spiritual gifts.

  155. One is what you could say comprehensible or intelligible spiritual gifts.

  156. Spiritual gifts that utilize our mind and our thinking,

  157. our understanding.

  158. And here he has mainly in mind things like prophecy,

  159. but also things like word of knowledge,

  160. a teaching,

  161. instruction,

  162. maybe a revelation from God,

  163. something that makes sense,

  164. that you think about,

  165. you comprehend,

  166. and maybe you share with somebody else.

  167. And he's wanting to compare and contrast that

  168. with a different category,

  169. a type of spiritual gift,

  170. that you could say incomprehensible or unintelligible.

  171. That doesn't mean they're bad.

  172. It just means they,

  173. they originate from our spirit.

  174. So they utilize our spirit more than our minds.

  175. And here in particular,

  176. he's thinking about the gift of tongues.

  177. Okay.

  178. So he,

  179. that's what's going on in this passage.

  180. He's comparing,

  181. contrasting these two types of spiritual gifts.

  182. Now let's just define our terms.

  183. What is speaking in tongues?

  184. Maybe you have experience of that.

  185. Maybe you don't,

  186. maybe you're new to church,

  187. maybe you're not yet a believer this morning,

  188. and you've heard about this.

  189. What is,

  190. what on earth is this spiritual tongue,

  191. this talking in tongues thing?

  192. Well,

  193. the Bible describes speaking tongues in two different ways.

  194. The one is,

  195. when maybe empowered by God's grace,

  196. God's spirit,

  197. somebody has the ability to speak in a language,

  198. which is foreign to them.

  199. They don't know how to speak the language,

  200. but the people around them do understand it.

  201. And this is sometimes given to people

  202. for the sake of speaking the gospel

  203. in a context that is not your own.

  204. So let's say,

  205. for instance,

  206. I go to Philippines,

  207. and I'm in the marketplace,

  208. or I'm on a bus,

  209. or I'm in a church service,

  210. and by God's grace and his spirit,

  211. I feel God giving me the ability

  212. to speak something that doesn't make sense to me,

  213. and I speak it,

  214. and it's Tagalog,

  215. and the people around me can understand

  216. that they might hear about the wonder of Jesus

  217. in the gospel.

  218. Okay?

  219. And we see something like this in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  220. The spirit comes upon the disciples,

  221. they're speaking in languages,

  222. which are maybe not known to them,

  223. but all the people in Jerusalem,

  224. the surrounding nations,

  225. they hear the gospel in their own language.

  226. And they say,

  227. God is speaking to us.

  228. It's amazing.

  229. Okay?

  230. So that's type one.

  231. Another type of speaking in tongues

  232. is probably more common in some ways,

  233. and that's when somebody speaks,

  234. or maybe more often prays,

  235. in a way that doesn't make any logical sense to anybody.

  236. It might sound like gibberish,

  237. okay,

  238. that nobody's going to understand what's being said,

  239. but it's a kind of prayer that is prayed

  240. in a way that doesn't engage your mind,

  241. but engages your spirit.

  242. It's a way of praying to God

  243. when you maybe run out of words,

  244. you don't know what to say,

  245. maybe you're caught up in a difficult situation

  246. and your words evade you,

  247. but you just know I need God.

  248. And it's a way of saying,

  249. God, I need you.

  250. I don't even know what to say,

  251. just but my heart knows I need you.

  252. And it's a way of personal prayer to God

  253. in a maybe way that doesn't engage the mind.

  254. And so actually Paul says this twice in our passage.

  255. Look at verse two with me.

  256. He says,

  257. For one who speaks in a tongue,

  258. speaks not to men,

  259. but to God.

  260. No one understands him,

  261. but he utters mysteries in the spirit,

  262. okay,

  263. or with his spirit.

  264. Also verse 15,

  265. or verse 14.

  266. If I pray with a tongue,

  267. my spirit prays,

  268. even though my mind is unfruitful,

  269. okay.

  270. So does that make sense?

  271. These two different ways of what is praying in tongues.

  272. Now on the other hand,

  273. prophecy,

  274. prophecy is when somebody speaks,

  275. empowered by God's spirit,

  276. in understandable,

  277. logical,

  278. coherent words,

  279. or ideas,

  280. and they speak with precise,

  281. or specificity,

  282. into a precise situation,

  283. maybe for an individual,

  284. or for a church.

  285. And they say,

  286. we feel like God is saying this,

  287. for you,

  288. or for us as a church,

  289. this is what God wants us to know,

  290. in this moment.

  291. Now sometimes a prophecy,

  292. or prophetic word,

  293. can be a warning,

  294. or a challenge,

  295. maybe even a rebuke.

  296. But often it's an encouragement,

  297. it's an upbuilding,

  298. but the purpose of prophecy,

  299. is to help either the individual,

  300. or the church,

  301. or the group,

  302. to hold on to God,

  303. with faith,

  304. and to live by faith,

  305. and obedience,

  306. for either the immediate moment,

  307. or the season ahead.

  308. Okay.

  309. So you're facing a situation,

  310. you're not sure how to handle it,

  311. and God says,

  312. CK,

  313. I've got a word for you,

  314. you need to know this.

  315. And it speaks with specificity,

  316. into the situation that you're facing,

  317. and you know,

  318. God is with me.

  319. God knows what's going on.

  320. He's told me which way to go.

  321. Now,

  322. so maybe for instance,

  323. you're in a small group,

  324. and that happens.

  325. Now one thing to be really clear on,

  326. when that happens,

  327. the speaker,

  328. genuinely,

  329. well should,

  330. believe that God is speaking through them.

  331. Right?

  332. But,

  333. we need to be very careful,

  334. because,

  335. that doesn't mean,

  336. that it's always infallible,

  337. or perfect,

  338. and it's certainly not on the same level,

  339. as God's word.

  340. So nobody should ever say,

  341. God has told me,

  342. X,

  343. Y,

  344. Z.

  345. Rather,

  346. what you should say is,

  347. I feel like God may be,

  348. may be saying this.

  349. Right?

  350. Sometimes the speaker,

  351. misunderstands.

  352. Sometimes there's,

  353. they can wrongly,

  354. interpret.

  355. Sometimes they can wrongly,

  356. apply the message.

  357. And so the Bible says,

  358. we should weigh up,

  359. we should test,

  360. we should investigate prophecies,

  361. and see,

  362. does this correspond to God's word?

  363. Is this true?

  364. Okay,

  365. so,

  366. do you know what we're talking about?

  367. Yes,

  368. okay,

  369. three of us,

  370. okay.

  371. Well,

  372. let's see,

  373. okay.

  374. So,

  375. tongues,

  376. prophecy.

  377. Now,

  378. 1 Corinthians 14,

  379. the apostle Paul,

  380. is not for one,

  381. against the other.

  382. Both are spiritual gifts,

  383. that are given by God,

  384. to the church.

  385. But what we see in Corinthians,

  386. is that he is going to say,

  387. when the church gathers,

  388. like we have this morning,

  389. or maybe on a Thursday night,

  390. at prayer meeting,

  391. or when your CG gathers,

  392. when the church gathers together,

  393. one of these spiritual gifts,

  394. is preferable to the other.

  395. Okay?

  396. Look at what he says here.

  397. Look at verse one with me.

  398. Paul says,

  399. pursue love.

  400. Okay,

  401. we spoke about that last week.

  402. That's the most important thing.

  403. Pursue love,

  404. and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts,

  405. especially,

  406. that you may prophesy.

  407. Okay?

  408. Now,

  409. why does Paul say,

  410. especially,

  411. that you may prophesy?

  412. Well,

  413. the immediate situation in Corinth,

  414. or as we've heard before,

  415. the Corinthians,

  416. they were particularly enamored,

  417. with speaking tongues.

  418. For them,

  419. that was their favorite,

  420. of all the spiritual gifts.

  421. And they thought,

  422. that was the most important one.

  423. And the reason was,

  424. because of the mystery,

  425. that surrounded it,

  426. for them,

  427. speaking in tongues,

  428. was the highest expression,

  429. that you were a spiritually mature person,

  430. that God was with you,

  431. you could kind of communicate with God,

  432. in this mysterious unknown language.

  433. It was the highest expression,

  434. that you were a spiritual person.

  435. And so they loved to come to church,

  436. and didn't matter if nobody understood them,

  437. they would all pray in tongues,

  438. and pray very loudly,

  439. and try and speak louder,

  440. than the person next to them,

  441. to kind of show off,

  442. how spiritual and mature they were.

  443. Okay?

  444. So that's the immediate context here.

  445. And Paul's point is,

  446. what you're doing,

  447. is you're thinking about yourself,

  448. Corinthians.

  449. You don't care about the person next to you,

  450. you're just thinking about yourself,

  451. you're trying to show off.

  452. But Paul says that actually,

  453. when the church gathers together,

  454. as a church family,

  455. like we have this morning,

  456. what should we be seeking to do?

  457. Hopefully our goal,

  458. our motive,

  459. isn't to show off how spiritual we are.

  460. Our motive,

  461. our goal,

  462. should be to build up the body,

  463. to help one another,

  464. in our faith,

  465. to strengthen the person,

  466. that's next to me,

  467. to encourage the person,

  468. that's behind me,

  469. to maybe challenge,

  470. or admonish,

  471. the person that's being hypocritical,

  472. to draw back the person,

  473. that's drifting away from Christ.

  474. In other words,

  475. when the church family gathers,

  476. it's not just me and Jesus,

  477. my goal,

  478. your goal,

  479. is to help the person,

  480. on either side of us,

  481. in front of us,

  482. behind of us,

  483. to encourage us,

  484. and strengthen our faith.

  485. Right?

  486. To build up,

  487. encourage,

  488. and strengthen each other.

  489. But in order to do that,

  490. we need to speak,

  491. sing,

  492. pray,

  493. confess,

  494. teach,

  495. admonish,

  496. with words,

  497. that are intelligible,

  498. and that we understand.

  499. So,

  500. look at how Paul says this.

  501. Look at your bulletin,

  502. verses 1 to 5 with me.

  503. Read this together.

  504. He says here,

  505. pursue love,

  506. earnestly desire the spiritual gifts,

  507. especially that you may prophesy.

  508. Now he has his reason.

  509. For,

  510. verse 2,

  511. for the one who speaks in a tongue,

  512. speaks not to others,

  513. but to God.

  514. No one understands him,

  515. he utters mysteries in the spirit.

  516. But on the other hand,

  517. the one who prophesies,

  518. speaks to people,

  519. for their upbuilding,

  520. their encouragement,

  521. their consolation.

  522. The one who speaks in a tongue,

  523. builds up himself,

  524. but the one who prophesies,

  525. builds up the church.

  526. Now,

  527. I want you all,

  528. to speak in tongues.

  529. Okay?

  530. So Paul's not against tongues.

  531. But even more than that,

  532. I want you to come and prophesy.

  533. For the one who prophesies,

  534. is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,

  535. unless of course someone interprets,

  536. so that the whole church may be built up.

  537. Okay?

  538. You see Paul's point?

  539. He's saying when you come together as a church,

  540. the goal is to encourage,

  541. to strengthen,

  542. to build up.

  543. Three times he uses the word build up here.

  544. He says,

  545. the one who prophesies,

  546. builds up the church,

  547. encourages them,

  548. consoles them.

  549. The one who prophesies,

  550. builds up the church,

  551. so that the church may be built up.

  552. This is Paul's goal.

  553. This is his hope for us.

  554. We come to church and we say,

  555. hey,

  556. maybe you've had a rough week.

  557. Maybe you've just lost your job.

  558. And as you're worshipping,

  559. as you're praying,

  560. the person next to you,

  561. is not just in their moment with God,

  562. actually,

  563. they are encouraging you.

  564. They're edifying you.

  565. They're strengthening you.

  566. Which sounds,

  567. a lot like love.

  568. Chapter 13.

  569. When you come together,

  570. pursue love.

  571. But in order to do that,

  572. you've got to understand what the person beside you,

  573. is saying.

  574. You've got to speak words.

  575. So imagine,

  576. imagine you come to me and you say,

  577. hey Kevin,

  578. I'd love to have some time with you.

  579. Can I,

  580. can I speak with you?

  581. There's some difficult things going in my life.

  582. I'd love to,

  583. to share my heart with you.

  584. I say,

  585. sure,

  586. we make a time.

  587. And,

  588. and we sit down and say,

  589. hey,

  590. what's on your heart?

  591. And you,

  592. you share what's in your heart.

  593. And you,

  594. you,

  595. you talk.

  596. And you say,

  597. what should I do?

  598. What does the Bible say?

  599. And I say,

  600. well,

  601. let me tell you what the Bible says.

  602. And then I speak for 15 minutes.

  603. And we,

  604. we look at scripture.

  605. And I try and talk to the matters of the heart.

  606. Except imagine,

  607. all of that is done in Zulu.

  608. Or Isitkursa.

  609. Or Swahili.

  610. Or something like that.

  611. Right?

  612. And I share my heart with you.

  613. And I pour out everything I know.

  614. In,

  615. in,

  616. in Swahili.

  617. And then I slap you on the back and say,

  618. all the best.

  619. Tell me how it goes.

  620. Right?

  621. And hey,

  622. I've got an appointment.

  623. Sorry,

  624. I need to go now.

  625. How are you going to feel?

  626. Are you going to feel encouraged?

  627. Are you going to feel built up?

  628. Are you going to feel loved?

  629. No.

  630. Well,

  631. Paul says here that,

  632. that when we come,

  633. we,

  634. our goal is to build one another up.

  635. So look at verse six.

  636. Now brothers,

  637. if I come to you speaking in tongues,

  638. how will that benefit you?

  639. Unless I bring some revelation,

  640. some knowledge,

  641. some prophecy,

  642. some teaching.

  643. I may feel encouraged.

  644. I may feel like I've,

  645. I've really connected with God.

  646. Me and Jesus,

  647. we've had a moment.

  648. But have I encouraged you?

  649. Have I strengthened your faith?

  650. And so verse 12,

  651. the,

  652. the key verse,

  653. look what he says here.

  654. So with yourselves,

  655. brothers and sisters,

  656. since you're eager for manifestations of the spirit,

  657. he's talking about spiritual gifts,

  658. excel in building up the church,

  659. building up one another.

  660. When we gather,

  661. we worship God,

  662. and we encourage one another.

  663. Now,

  664. question here.

  665. Is Paul against speaking tongues?

  666. They say,

  667. no,

  668. that's bad.

  669. We don't do that anymore.

  670. We don't do that in our church.

  671. We only do this.

  672. No,

  673. not at all.

  674. Look at verse five.

  675. I want you all to speak in tongues,

  676. but even more when you gather,

  677. to prophesy.

  678. Verse 18,

  679. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you,

  680. says Paul.

  681. So he's not against it.

  682. Nevertheless,

  683. when the church gathers,

  684. I'd rather speak in five words with my mind,

  685. in order to instruct and edify you,

  686. than 10,000 words with my tongue.

  687. And again,

  688. verse 39,

  689. he says,

  690. So brothers,

  691. earnestly desire to prophesy,

  692. do not forbid speaking in tongues.

  693. The Bible's not against it.

  694. It says,

  695. when we gather though,

  696. one of our goals is not just me and Jesus,

  697. it's horizontal as well.

  698. So I personally,

  699. I pray in tongues.

  700. I pray in tongues quite regularly,

  701. probably not every day,

  702. but a couple of times a week.

  703. And for me,

  704. the reason I do that is,

  705. sometimes I am,

  706. maybe on the way to a meeting,

  707. and I just feel like,

  708. God,

  709. I really need your grace here.

  710. This is a difficult meeting.

  711. I'm not exactly sure how to handle it.

  712. And just,

  713. I'm walking to the meeting.

  714. I'm just praying under my breath,

  715. saying,

  716. God,

  717. I need your spirit.

  718. I'm just drawing on God's strength.

  719. Sometimes I'll be in a prayer meeting,

  720. and there'll be four or five of us in a circle praying,

  721. and someone else is praying.

  722. And rather than me just staying quiet and listening,

  723. and my mind drifting somewhere else,

  724. I'll just be praying under my breath.

  725. Yes,

  726. God,

  727. God,

  728. I agree with this person.

  729. I'm just,

  730. I'm praying in tongues under my breath.

  731. My mind is listening,

  732. but my heart is engaged with God.

  733. Well,

  734. sometimes I'm in a situation where I feel so desperate.

  735. I have no words.

  736. I don't know what to say.

  737. I say,

  738. God,

  739. I need you.

  740. I'm just,

  741. I'm praying in my spirit.

  742. My mind is out of words,

  743. but God,

  744. I need you.

  745. And Paul's point is that when the church gathers,

  746. it's not just these individual moments,

  747. me and God.

  748. It's us together,

  749. encouraging each other.

  750. Now,

  751. there's two implications of this,

  752. okay?

  753. One theological,

  754. one practical.

  755. So,

  756. the theological one first.

  757. Implication one,

  758. loving God with your mind

  759. is essential to trusting God with your heart.

  760. Okay?

  761. Loving God with your mind

  762. is very essential to trusting God with your heart.

  763. So,

  764. the Bible places a lot of emphasis

  765. on the centrality of our hearts,

  766. right?

  767. Love the Lord your God with all your heart.

  768. Above all else,

  769. God,

  770. your heart.

  771. It is the wellspring of life.

  772. Our heart is the control center of our lives.

  773. But sometimes,

  774. Christians,

  775. we think,

  776. because of the importance of our heart,

  777. as long as I love God with my heart,

  778. it doesn't really matter what my mind believes.

  779. Okay?

  780. Well,

  781. sometimes we think,

  782. we shouldn't overthink things,

  783. just love God with your heart.

  784. But actually,

  785. some people might say,

  786. I'm not really into theology and doctrine.

  787. I'm kind of,

  788. I'm more of a heart person,

  789. I'm not a head person.

  790. But actually,

  791. all of us are theologians.

  792. We all believe something about God.

  793. You may be a bad theologian,

  794. or a good theologian,

  795. but you all have some beliefs about God.

  796. You may be,

  797. your theology may correspond to the Bible,

  798. or it may correspond to culture,

  799. but we all have some beliefs.

  800. Okay?

  801. But actually,

  802. what we notice here,

  803. notice the underlying assumption here.

  804. In order to grow and mature,

  805. and be built up in our faith,

  806. in order to have a strong and a robust faith,

  807. that can handle the challenges,

  808. and the difficulties of life,

  809. Paul wants us to know biblical truth.

  810. He wants us to know with our minds,

  811. what does God say?

  812. What does the Bible say?

  813. What must we believe?

  814. You could call it doctrine.

  815. Okay?

  816. And that makes sense,

  817. because what is a Christian?

  818. A Christian is somebody who's learning to love God,

  819. trust God,

  820. and obey God.

  821. Okay?

  822. That's a disciple of Jesus.

  823. But how do you love a God that you vaguely know?

  824. You don't know Him very well.

  825. How do you trust God in the difficulties of life,

  826. when you don't really know what God is like?

  827. You don't know whether He's trustworthy.

  828. How do you obey God in obedience,

  829. or walk in obedience,

  830. against the grain of popular culture?

  831. You choose the narrow road,

  832. the difficult road of obedience,

  833. rather than the wide road of culture,

  834. but when you don't even know what Jesus called us to.

  835. So in order to walk,

  836. to love God,

  837. and trust God,

  838. and obey God,

  839. and walk in obedience,

  840. you actually need to know what God says.

  841. So knowing,

  842. loving God with our minds,

  843. is a very essential part to trusting God with our hearts.

  844. Does that make sense?

  845. Okay, implication one.

  846. Implication two.

  847. This is more practical.

  848. Christians come to church,

  849. not only as consumers,

  850. but as contributors.

  851. Okay?

  852. That's Paul's point here, right?

  853. When you gather as a church family,

  854. don't just think,

  855. I'm going to get a moment with Jesus.

  856. Actually come as a contributor.

  857. How can I bless and edify,

  858. and encourage one another?

  859. So practically,

  860. what does that mean?

  861. Okay,

  862. here's a couple of ideas.

  863. Firstly,

  864. come to church early.

  865. Okay?

  866. I know you've never heard me say that before,

  867. but,

  868. if you roll into church at 1045,

  869. or 1050,

  870. or 11,

  871. there's no way that you're in a state of mind

  872. to really receive something from God

  873. that's going to bless the person next to you,

  874. encourage the person next to you.

  875. As you run into church,

  876. your mind is frantic,

  877. and you've been fighting with the people in the parking lot,

  878. and the bus drivers made you late,

  879. and you rushed out the door,

  880. you're not in any state of mind to say,

  881. hey God,

  882. I'm here to serve others.

  883. Right?

  884. So come to church early.

  885. Secondly,

  886. come to church prayed up.

  887. Again,

  888. if you roll out of church,

  889. roll out of bed at 10 past 10,

  890. you throw down some coffee,

  891. find some clothes somewhere in the corner of your room,

  892. throw it on,

  893. you rush into church at 1035,

  894. what are the chances that you're ready to hear from God,

  895. to receive maybe a word of encouragement for the person next to you,

  896. or to bring a spiritual gift that's going to edify the person around you.

  897. No,

  898. no,

  899. come to church prayed up,

  900. have a devotion,

  901. get into God's word.

  902. Come ready to bless those around you.

  903. Here's another thing,

  904. come ready to strengthen,

  905. encourage.

  906. So here's a really practical tip.

  907. You know that long corridor all the way down here,

  908. okay,

  909. that Hayden's about to walk into,

  910. walk out of?

  911. When you get out the lift,

  912. you've got about 25 seconds down the passageway,

  913. here's what you do,

  914. you pray,

  915. you say,

  916. God,

  917. this morning,

  918. I want to meet with you,

  919. and I also want to be used by you.

  920. God,

  921. may you help me to encourage the person I sit next to,

  922. the person I sit behind,

  923. or in front of,

  924. the person around me,

  925. may I be a blessing.

  926. Here I am,

  927. use me this morning.

  928. Come to church ready to strengthen,

  929. and come to church ready to receive.

  930. The passage,

  931. the focus of this passage is ready to give,

  932. but come ready to receive as well.

  933. Quick story here,

  934. about eight years ago,

  935. Dan Tellis,

  936. right,

  937. you guys know Dan,

  938. he's sick this morning,

  939. he's not here.

  940. That is when,

  941. Watermark met in Cyberport down the hill.

  942. Dan is,

  943. he's moved to Hong Kong about eight months before,

  944. and Dan's goal was,

  945. he moved from Sydney,

  946. he said,

  947. I'm going to come to Hong Kong for maybe 12 months,

  948. 18 months,

  949. then I'm going to move to London,

  950. through the company ranks,

  951. I'm going to get a promotion,

  952. you know,

  953. I'm going to move through the ranks,

  954. I'm going to move to London.

  955. I'm going to,

  956. Hong Kong's going to be just a pit stop,

  957. on my way to London.

  958. And he's not in a great place spiritually,

  959. but God's got a hold of him,

  960. God's busy turning his life around,

  961. and so he's come to Watermark,

  962. and he's been coming for a few months.

  963. And around that time,

  964. he gets offered a job offer,

  965. with another company,

  966. that kind of is going to mess up all his career plans,

  967. right?

  968. But this company,

  969. it's a much bigger company,

  970. it's a bigger role,

  971. he's a bit scared,

  972. he feels like,

  973. oh,

  974. I don't know if I have what it takes,

  975. to be in this company,

  976. and God,

  977. if I take this job,

  978. then all my plans of going to London,

  979. are out the window.

  980. And so he comes to church one day,

  981. and he's praying,

  982. saying,

  983. God,

  984. what are you saying,

  985. what are you saying?

  986. And at the end of the service,

  987. a lady says,

  988. hey,

  989. sorry,

  990. can I just share something with you?

  991. During the service,

  992. I just felt God give me a message for you,

  993. and see if this makes sense.

  994. I felt like God saying,

  995. he's opening a new opportunity for you,

  996. and that you're a bit nervous about it,

  997. because you feel like you don't have what it takes,

  998. but God says,

  999. this is of God,

1000. and he wants you to walk with faith,

  1001. and courage,

  1002. trust him,

1003. he's opening this door for you.

  1004. Dan's like,

  1005. it's amazing.

1006. And so he took that job,

  1007. and eight years later,

  1008. he's still here,

1009. and he's married to Soda,

  1010. and two kids,

1011. and we're not letting him go anywhere,

  1012. right?

1013. So that wasn't the preaching,

1014. it wasn't one of the elders,

  1015. or anyone on stage,

1016. it was just someone sitting in the back row,

1017. that was open to God.

  1018. God,

1019. is there anything you want to,

1020. how do you want to use me this morning?

1021. And he had the message,

  1022. and shared it.

  1023. He said,

  1024. you weighed up,

  1025. maybe of God,

  1026. maybe not,

1027. and it's so encouraging to Dan.

  1028. Okay,

  1029. so,

  1030. verses one to 19,

1031. Paul's really got one main point.

1032. When you come to church,

1033. come as a body to build up,

  1034. to encourage,

  1035. to strengthen the body.

1036. Look at verses 20 to 25 with me.

  1037. Spiritual gifts,

  1038. and our Christian witness.

  1039. Now,

1040. here Paul gives a second reason,

  1041. why our gatherings,

1042. should be marked with intelligible encouraging,

1043. rather than just individual spiritual experiences.

1044. And that is for the sake of the spiritual seeker.

  1045. Okay,

1046. look at verses 20 to 22 with me.

  1047. It says,

  1048. brothers,

  1049. sisters,

  1050. do not be children,

1051. do not be childish or immature in your thinking.

  1052. Okay,

1053. we just spoke about that.

  1054. In regards to evil,

  1055. okay,

  1056. be childish,

  1057. but in your thinking,

1058. I want you to be mature.

  1059. Verse 21,

  1060. in the law,

  1061. in the Old Testament,

  1062. it says,

1063. by people of strange tongues,

1064. and by the lips of foreigners,

1065. I will speak to this people,

  1066. but even then,

1067. they will not listen to me,

  1068. says the Lord.

  1069. Thus,

  1070. tongues are a sign,

  1071. not for unbelievers,

  1072. sorry,

  1073. thus,

  1074. tongues are a sign,

  1075. not for believers,

  1076. but for unbelievers,

1077. while prophecy is a sign,

  1078. not for unbelievers,

  1079. but for believers.

  1080. Okay,

  1081. what's going on here?

  1082. At first,

1083. this seems like Paul's contradicting himself,

  1084. because here,

  1085. later on,

  1086. he's going to say,

  1087. actually,

1088. tongues is not for unbelievers,

  1089. it's for believers,

  1090. okay?

1091. So what's going on here?

1092. This is a really difficult passage to understand.

  1093. Essentially,

1094. Paul is quoting Isaiah 28,

  1095. in the Old Testament.

1096. And what is going on there,

1097. in the passage in Isaiah,

  1098. God's people,

  1099. Israel,

1100. they've refused to listen to God.

1101. He sent them prophet after prophet,

  1102. leader after leader,

1103. they don't want to listen to God,

  1104. their heads are hard,

  1105. their hearts are hard,

  1106. they're bent on rebellion,

  1107. going their own way.

1108. And because they refuse to love God,

  1109. or trust Him,

  1110. or obey Him,

1111. or walk in His ways,

1112. God is going to bring judgment.

1113. He's been trying to call them back to Himself,

  1114. saying,

1115. come and center your lives with me,

1116. they don't want to listen.

  1117. And so he says,

  1118. okay,

1119. I'm going to bring judgment to you.

1120. But how is judgment going to come?

1121. The way it's going to come

1122. is in the form of the Assyrian army.

1123. The Assyrians are the nation in the north,

1124. they are going to invade the north of Israel,

1125. they're going to capture them,

1126. they're going to burn down their cities,

1127. and they're going to march them off to Israel,

  1128. into Assyria,

1129. and take them in exile.

1130. They're going to be slaves in Assyria.

1131. But the Assyrians are this foreign army

1132. that speak with a strange language,

  1133. an unusual tongue.

1134. And so while they're marching them off to Assyria

  1135. with sword and spear,

1136. and they're shouting these commands

  1137. in a foreign language

1138. that the Israelites don't understand.

  1139. You see,

  1140. these Assyrians,

1141. they weren't leading the lost Israelites

  1142. back to God,

  1143. or back to repentance.

1144. They weren't leading them back

  1145. to being God's people,

  1146. under God's rule,

  1147. in God's place.

1148. They were leading them further away

  1149. from God's place,

  1150. out of Israel,

  1151. away from the temple,

1152. away from the promised land,

  1153. away from the priests,

  1154. and the presence,

  1155. and God's word,

  1156. and God's law.

  1157. These Assyrians,

1158. with their strange language and tongue,

  1159. were leading God's people

  1160. that were lost,

  1161. and lost their way

  1162. further away from God,

  1163. where God's word

1164. was not going to be speaking to them.

  1165. And in fact,

  1166. actually history tells us,

  1167. when the Assyrians

  1168. evaded north of Israel

  1169. in 720 BC,

  1170. that was the end

  1171. of that kingdom.

  1172. It never recovered.

  1173. They went into exile,

1174. and they never were reconstituted.

  1175. It was the end

1176. of the north of Israel.

  1177. Okay?

  1178. Now, Paul uses this

  1179. as an analogy.

  1180. He says,

  1181. when people come

  1182. into our church

  1183. who are not sure

  1184. about Jesus

  1185. or the gospel,

  1186. the Bible says here,

  1187. an unbeliever,

1188. but the word actually means

  1189. a spiritual seeker.

  1190. Okay?

  1191. Like,

  1192. a number of us

  1193. are here today.

1194. A number of you here

  1195. wouldn't call yourselves

  1196. Christians.

1197. Maybe you think of yourself

  1198. as a spiritual seeker.

  1199. The Bible says that

  1200. when you come

  1201. into our church gatherings

  1202. on a Sunday morning,

  1203. we who are Christians

1204. should be mindful of you,

  1205. and our hope

  1206. and ambition

  1207. should be to do

  1208. everything we can

  1209. to help you,

  1210. our guests,

  1211. those that are

  1212. spiritual seekers,

  1213. to help you

  1214. to come back

  1215. to know God,

  1216. to understand His ways,

1217. to know who Jesus is,

  1218. why He died

1219. on the cross for you,

  1220. why you need

  1221. to follow Him

  1222. and surrender to Him

1223. and bow down to Him

  1224. and receive Him

  1225. as your King

  1226. and your Lord.

1227. We don't want to be

  1228. like the Assyrians

  1229. that speak in

  1230. this strange language

  1231. or an unknown tongue

1232. and confuse you even more

  1233. so that you leave

  1234. this place saying,

  1235. wow,

  1236. those people are weird,

1237. I never want to go back there.

  1238. Okay?

  1239. We should do

  1240. everything we can

  1241. to help you

  1242. to come to,

  1243. to plead with you,

  1244. to urge with you,

1245. to call you to Christ.

  1246. But if our services,

1247. like the Corinthian services were,

  1248. are not marked

  1249. with order

  1250. and coherence,

  1251. if everyone's just

  1252. on their own mission

  1253. with God,

1254. we will be to you

  1255. like the Assyrians

  1256. with the Israelites,

  1257. actually leading you

  1258. further away from God.

1259. And so verse 22 says

  1260. that in that setting,

  1261. everyone just speaking

  1262. on their own,

  1263. doing their own thing,

1264. will be like a signpost

  1265. driving spiritual seekers

  1266. in the wrong direction,

  1267. further away from Christ

  1268. in the gospel,

  1269. rather than leading

  1270. to Christ.

1271. And so look at Paul's

  1272. big point.

1273. He says this in verse 23

  1274. to verse 25,

  1275. he says,

  1276. If, therefore,

  1277. the whole church

  1278. comes together

  1279. and everyone speaks

  1280. in tongues,

  1281. outsiders or unbelievers,

  1282. spiritual seekers

  1283. will enter,

  1284. will they not say,

1285. you're out of your minds?

  1286. But rather,

  1287. if all prophesy

  1288. and a spiritual seeker

  1289. comes in,

  1290. he may be convinced

  1291. of all.

  1292. He may be called

  1293. to account.

1294. The secrets of their heart

  1295. being disclosed

  1296. and so falling

  1297. on their face,

  1298. they may worship God,

  1299. declare that God

  1300. is really with you.

  1301. Let me tell you

  1302. one brief story

  1303. about this.

  1304. This is a bit

  1305. of a crazy story.

  1306. I've never seen this

  1307. happen in real life,

  1308. but anyway.

  1309. There's a guy

  1310. called John Wimber.

  1311. He died,

  1312. I think,

  1313. in the 1990s.

  1314. He kind of started

  1315. the Vineyard Movement

  1316. in America

  1317. in the 1970s.

  1318. He was really

  1319. empowered by God

  1320. and spiritual gifts

  1321. in an amazing way.

  1322. One day,

  1323. he's on the airplane.

  1324. He's flying from Chicago

  1325. to New York

  1326. and the plane

  1327. hasn't taken off.

  1328. He's busy

  1329. buckling his seat

  1330. and he looks

  1331. across the aisle

  1332. and there's a middle-aged

  1333. gentleman

  1334. and he sees

  1335. written across his face,

  1336. not in actual letters,

1337. but he kind of sees

  1338. the word adultery

  1339. and a lady's name

  1340. underneath.

  1341. Let's just say

  1342. Victoria, right?

  1343. And he's a bit

  1344. freaked out

  1345. and he kind of

  1346. keeps on looking

  1347. and he's trying

  1348. not to pay

  1349. too much attention

1350. but he keeps on looking

  1351. and the guy

  1352. looks at him

  1353. and says,

  1354. hey,

  1355. what's your problem?

  1356. What are you doing?

1357. And what do you want?

  1358. And John Wimber

  1359. leans over to him

  1360. and the guy's wife

1361. is on the other side

  1362. and says,

  1363. does the name Victoria

  1364. mean anything to you?

1365. And his face goes white

  1366. and he says,

  1367. we need to talk.

  1368. And so,

  1369. I don't know

1370. if it's there and then

  1371. or when the plane

  1372. goes up,

  1373. whatever,

  1374. they're in the back

  1375. of their seats

1376. and they go to the front

  1377. and they talk

  1378. and he says,

  1379. who told you?

  1380. How on earth

  1381. did you know?

  1382. And John Wimber says,

  1383. hey,

  1384. I'm a Christian.

  1385. I believe that God

  1386. spoke to me.

  1387. This is what happened.

1388. This is what I saw

  1389. and while he's talking,

  1390. he says,

  1391. God gives a message

  1392. that says,

  1393. if you don't turn

  1394. and repent from this,

1395. I'm going to take your life.

  1396. And he shares that

  1397. with the guy

  1398. and the guy

  1399. in the middle

  1400. of the airplane,

1401. he breaks down in tears

  1402. and he says,

  1403. it's true.

  1404. It's true.

1405. I've been having an affair

  1406. with this person

  1407. and I need God.

  1408. And he repents

  1409. and he goes back

  1410. to his seat

  1411. and apparently

  1412. he confesses

  1413. to his wife

  1414. and then John Wimber

  1415. leads both of them

  1416. to Christ, right?

  1417. Now,

  1418. I've never seen

  1419. anything like that

  1420. but

  1421. I think that's

  1422. what Paul's means

  1423. when he says,

1424. the secrets of our hearts

  1425. are disclosed.

  1426. Sometimes God has

  1427. this way

  1428. where he can speak

  1429. to us and say,

  1430. you're going

  1431. in a dead direction

1432. and I want you to change.

  1433. Come back to God.

  1434. One last story

  1435. and then I'll close.

  1436. Seven years ago,

  1437. Claire and I

1438. were living in Cape Town

  1439. and we were

  1440. in big discussions

  1441. with Oscar

  1442. and Ed

  1443. and Franklin

  1444. about moving

  1445. to Hong Kong

  1446. to come and join

  1447. the Watermark Church

  1448. here, right?

  1449. And we felt like

  1450. God had been speaking

  1451. to us.

  1452. We felt like God

  1453. was leading us

  1454. to Hong Kong

  1455. and to Watermark

  1456. but it wasn't finalized

  1457. and one day

  1458. I was,

  1459. I remember

1460. it was a Thursday afternoon

  1461. I was on the

  1462. Watermark website,

  1463. okay?

1464. It's like every few days

  1465. I was on the

  1466. Watermark website

  1467. and I remember

  1468. all the photos

  1469. were up.

  1470. Henrika was there

  1471. and Jeremy

  1472. and Soda

  1473. and all the staff

  1474. photos were on

  1475. the website

  1476. and I remember

  1477. thinking,

  1478. God,

  1479. there is no ways

  1480. I can do this.

  1481. This is way

  1482. out of my league.

  1483. I'm just this

  1484. like 32 year old

  1485. idiot that doesn't

  1486. know anything.

  1487. There's no ways

  1488. I can lead Watermark

  1489. and I was feeling

  1490. completely just

  1491. overwhelmed

  1492. by the idea

  1493. of coming here.

  1494. Anyway,

  1495. that night

  1496. we have a

  1497. leaders meeting

  1498. with a bunch

  1499. of elders

  1500. and pastors

  1501. from various churches

  1502. gathered

  1503. and I was feeling

  1504. completely overwhelmed.

  1505. Nobody in the room

  1506. knew,

  1507. two people did

  1508. but they were

  1509. in another group

  1510. but pretty much

  1511. out of 70 people

  1512. almost nobody

  1513. knew what

  1514. was going on

  1515. in our minds

  1516. the conversation

  1517. we're having.

  1518. And so I'm

  1519. in a group

  1520. with a bunch

  1521. of people

  1522. and I say

  1523. hey guys

  1524. I would just

  1525. love some prayer

  1526. and an older

  1527. gentleman called

  1528. Paul Johnson

  1529. he starts praying

  1530. for me

  1531. and he says

  1532. Kevin,

  1533. similar to Dan

  1534. he says

  1535. Kevin I feel

  1536. like God's

  1537. saying there's

  1538. a new season

  1539. up ahead

  1540. for you

  1541. and you feel

  1542. overwhelmed

  1543. you say

  1544. I can't do it

  1545. and God

  1546. says that's

  1547. right

  1548. you can't

  1549. do it

  1550. in your own

  1551. strength

  1552. but he will

  1553. be with you

  1554. he will go

  1555. with you

  1556. and this is

  1557. of him

  1558. trust him

  1559. and in that

  1560. moment

  1561. it was like

  1562. God turned

  1563. my heart

  1564. and I knew

  1565. I mean

  1566. Paul had

  1567. no idea

  1568. that we were

  1569. thinking of

  1570. moving to Hong Kong

  1571. not a clue

  1572. and yet God

  1573. spoke to him

  1574. it was exactly

  1575. what I needed

  1576. to hear

  1577. and I left

  1578. that meeting

  1579. in just a

  1580. completely

  1581. different posture

  1582. this is what

  1583. God wants

  1584. to do sometimes

  1585. sometimes

  1586. he uses

  1587. spiritual gifts

  1588. to speak

  1589. to us

  1590. and to encourage

  1591. us

  1592. and this is

  1593. Paul's point

  1594. here

  1595. right

  1596. friends

  1597. when God

  1598. gathers us

  1599. as a church

  1600. he wants us

  1601. to build up

  1602. one another

  1603. to encourage

  1604. one another

  1605. to edify

  1606. one another

  1607. maybe you hear

  1608. this morning

  1609. you've just

  1610. lost your job

  1611. maybe you've

  1612. lost a loved

  1613. one

  1614. or a close

  1615. family member

  1616. is sick

  1617. or you're

  1618. feeling homesick

  1619. because you live

  1620. far away

  1621. from home

  1622. and you come

  1623. to church

  1624. the church

  1625. family is meant

  1626. to be a family

  1627. that encourages

  1628. and builds up

  1629. that one another

  1630. we can strengthen

  1631. each other

  1632. that you can know

  1633. with specificity

  1634. God knows

  1635. your number

  1636. he knows

  1637. what you're

  1638. grappling with

  1639. and he wants

  1640. to draw near

  1641. and speak to you

  1642. when we come

  1643. to church

  1644. we come

  1645. not just to receive

  1646. we come

  1647. to give

  1648. we come

  1649. to bless

  1650. we come

  1651. to serve

  1652. one another

  1653. and in a way

  1654. that reminds us

  1655. of Jesus Christ

  1656. doesn't it

  1657. right

  1658. when Jesus

  1659. when Jesus

  1660. came

  1661. how did he

  1662. come

  1663. Jesus didn't

  1664. come to serve

  1665. his own needs

  1666. his own desires

  1667. in fact

  1668. his whole

  1669. coming

  1670. was to lay

  1671. down his life

  1672. for one another

  1673. when God

  1674. wanted to rescue

  1675. us

  1676. and to save

  1677. us

  1678. like the story

  1679. of John Wimbun

  1680. that guy

  1681. in the airplane

  1682. when God

  1683. wanted to

  1684. help us

  1685. he sent

  1686. what John

  1687. says is

  1688. the word

  1689. of God

  1690. made flesh

  1691. God's logos

  1692. his revelation

  1693. his message

  1694. of salvation

  1695. he came

  1696. to us

  1697. but how did

  1698. he come

  1699. he didn't

  1700. send a cryptic

  1701. message

  1702. he didn't

  1703. send a mysterious

  1704. note

  1705. he came

  1706. to us

  1707. in flesh

  1708. and blood

  1709. he came

  1710. to us

  1711. in a language

  1712. that we

  1713. could see

  1714. and touch

  1715. and feel

  1716. and understand

  1717. God came

  1718. to us

  1719. to bring

  1720. God's word

  1721. to us

  1722. he sought

  1723. us out

  1724. his message

  1725. of salvation

  1726. and earlier

  1727. I spoke

  1728. about the way

  1729. that we

  1730. come to church

  1731. and that may

  1732. feel like a

  1733. burden

  1734. but you need

  1735. to remember

  1736. long before

  1737. you ever

  1738. came to church

  1739. God came

  1740. to you

  1741. God came

  1742. for you

  1743. he came

  1744. in flesh

  1745. and blood

  1746. he came

  1747. with a

  1748. message

  1749. you could

  1750. understand

  1751. he came

  1752. with a

  1753. word

  1754. to call

  1755. you

  1756. away

  1757. from

  1758. not just

  1759. exile

  1760. into

  1761. Syria

  1762. but away

  1763. from hell

  1764. forever

  1765. to himself

  1766. friends

  1767. Jesus was

  1768. utterly

  1769. content

  1770. in heaven

  1771. he didn't

  1772. need

  1773. anything

  1774. he didn't

  1775. need us

  1776. he didn't

  1777. need our

  1778. worship

  1779. he didn't

  1780. need our

  1781. praise

  1782. he was

  1783. utterly

  1784. content

  1785. in heaven

  1786. with the

  1787. father

  1788. and the

  1789. son

  1790. but he

  1791. came

  1792. he loved

  1793. us

  1794. he loved

  1795. us enough

  1796. to come

  1797. to us

  1798. and how

  1799. did he

  1800. come

  1801. he came

  1802. as a

  1803. servant

  1804. to lay

  1805. down

  1806. his

  1807. life

  1808. to pour

  1809. out

  1810. his

  1811. life

  1812. to bring

  1813. us

  1814. not just

  1815. the message

  1816. of salvation

  1817. but the

  1818. hope of

  1819. salvation

  1820. were it not

  1821. for Jesus

  1822. coming

  1823. all of us

  1824. would be

  1825. like the

  1826. Israelites

  1827. marched

  1828. off not

  1829. to Syria

  1830. but hell

  1831. forever

  1832. and ever

  1833. but Jesus

  1834. came to

  1835. us

  1836. Jesus came

  1837. for us

  1838. that we

  1839. may know

  1840. him

  1841. and be

  1842. saved

  1843. and have

  1844. forgiveness

  1845. and be

  1846. rescued

  1847. and turn

  1848. to him

  1849. and live

  1850. for him

  1851. friends

  1852. why don't

  1853. we do

  1854. that now

  1855. as we

  1856. pray

  1857. and then

  1858. we'll

  1859. celebrate

  1860. communion

  1861. together

  1862. let's pray

  1863. together

  1864. Lord Jesus

  1865. we hear

  1866. in your word

  1867. that when we

  1868. gather as a

  1869. church family

  1870. you want

  1871. to build

  1872. us up

  1873. in our

  1874. faith

  1875. God

  1876. you want

  1877. to strengthen

  1878. and encourage

  1879. us

  1880. God

  1881. thank you

  1882. for that

  1883. but Jesus

  1884. that we

  1885. as Niels

  1886. and Albert

  1887. reminded us

  1888. this morning

  1889. you always

  1890. take the

  1891. first step

  1892. God

  1893. before we

  1894. even come

  1895. to church

  1896. you are

  1897. the one

  1898. that's

  1899. moving

  1900. towards

  1901. us

  1902. before we

  1903. even

  1904. understand

  1905. the gospel

  1906. you are

  1907. the one

  1908. that's

  1909. moving

  1910. towards

  1911. us

  1912. you came

  1913. to us

  1914. you came

  1915. for us

  1916. you calling

  1917. us to

  1918. yourself

  1919. God

  1920. maybe

  1921. some of

  1922. us here

  1923. this morning

  1924. are spiritually

  1925. dry

  1926. we feel

  1927. tired

  1928. we feel

  1929. exhausted

  1930. we feel

  1931. burnt

  1932. out

  1933. we feel

  1934. empty

  1935. God

  1936. by your

  1937. spirit

  1938. won't you

  1939. speak

  1940. to us

  1941. won't you

  1942. remind us

  1943. that you

  1944. know what's

  1945. going on

  1946. in our

  1947. lives

  1948. in our

  1949. hearts

  1950. God

  1951. want you

  1952. to remind

  1953. us

  1954. that

  1955. you're

  1956. the one

  1957. that knows

  1958. all things

  1959. and you're

  1960. the one

  1961. that wants

  1962. to carry

  1963. and sustain

  1964. us

  1965. you don't

  1966. stand back

  1967. and wait

  1968. for us

  1969. to pick

  1970. ourselves

  1971. up

  1972. and sort

  1973. ourselves

  1974. out

  1975. you don't

  1976. wait for

  1977. us to

  1978. come to

  1979. you

  1980. you God

  1981. come to

  1982. us

  1983. in grace

  1984. and mercy

  1985. you are

  1986. holy

  1987. and above

  1988. but you're

  1989. also a

  1990. good and

  1991. gracious

  1992. king

  1993. God

  1994. I pray

  1995. for us

  1996. as a

  1997. church

  1998. I pray

  1999. that we

  2000. will be

  2001. a church

  2002. that

  2003. really

  2004. experiences

  2005. the power

  2006. of the

  2007. living

  2008. God

  2009. the spirit

  2010. of God

  2011. in our

  2012. midst

  2013. God

  2014. that God

  2015. each one

  2016. of us

  2017. will know

  2018. that you

  2019. are real

  2020. and alive

  2021. and moving

  2022. and speaking

  2023. to us

  2024. God

  2025. God

  2026. God

  2027. help us

  2028. to pray

  2029. help us

  2030. to be

  2031. a church

  2032. that's

  2033. marked

  2034. by love

  2035. building

  2036. up

  2037. strengthening

  2038. consoling

  2039. and encouraging

  2040. one another

  2041. God we pray

  2042. that you help us

  2043. to be these

  2044. things

  2045. in your

  2046. gracious

  2047. and wonderful

  2048. name

  2049. amen

  2050. amen

  2051. we're gonna

  2052. close our

  2053. service by

  2054. taking communion

  2055. and then

  2056. singing a song

  2057. and

  2058. communion

  2059. is this

  2060. meal that

  2061. believers

  2062. go through

  2063. it's this

  2064. sacrament

  2065. it's a

  2066. tradition

  2067. it's a

  2068. holy tradition

  2069. where we

  2070. remind one

  2071. another of

  2072. the gospel

  2073. when we

  2074. take communion

  2075. we remind

  2076. ourselves

  2077. that Jesus

  2078. in flesh

  2079. and blood

  2080. died on the

  2081. cross for us

  2082. the bible

  2083. says

  2084. in

  2085. Hebrews

  2086. long ago

  2087. in ancient

  2088. times

  2089. God spoke

  2090. to us

  2091. through the

  2092. prophets

  2093. but these

  2094. days

  2095. he's spoken

  2096. to us

  2097. through his

  2098. son

  2099. his son

  2100. Jesus

  2101. came to

  2102. die on

  2103. the cross

  2104. for us

  2105. communion

  2106. is a

  2107. reminder

  2108. of that

  2109. communion

  2110. is for

  2111. believers

  2112. to remind

  2113. us that

  2114. when our

  2115. faith is

  2116. weak

  2117. and our

  2118. faith

  2119. is dry

  2120. that God

  2121. by his

  2122. grace

  2123. draws near

  2124. to us

  2125. and so

  2126. if you're

  2127. a Christian

  2128. this morning

  2129. I want

  2130. to invite

  2131. you to

  2132. come

  2133. and grab

  2134. the elements

  2135. grab one

  2136. of these

  2137. there's

  2138. some

  2139. wafer

  2140. of bread

  2141. in here

  2142. remind us

  2143. of Christ's

  2144. body

  2145. that's

  2146. broken

  2147. there's

  2148. some

  2149. juice

  2150. remind us

  2151. of Christ's

  2152. blood

  2153. that are

  2154. shed

  2155. if you're

  2156. a follower

  2157. of Jesus

  2158. why don't you

  2159. come get

  2160. the elements

  2161. and then

  2162. come back

  2163. to your

  2164. seeds

  2165. and I'll

  2166. lead us

  2167. in taking

  2168. this

  2169. together

  2170. let's

  2171. do that

  2172. now

  2173. if you're

  2174. not a

  2175. Christian

  2176. hey I want

  2177. to encourage

  2178. you to let

  2179. this pass

  2180. you by

  2181. this is for

  2182. those of us

  2183. that are

  2184. followers of

  2185. Jesus

  2186. but why don't

  2187. you take

  2188. this moment

  2189. to think

  2190. about the

  2191. gospel

  2192. think about

  2193. the cross

  2194. think about

  2195. what does it

  2196. mean that

  2197. Jesus died

  2198. for you

  2199. for your

  2200. sins

  2201. but for

  2202. those of us

  2203. that are

  2204. followers of

  2205. Jesus

  2206. why don't

  2207. you come

  2208. and get

  2209. this

  2210. and then

  2211. I'll lead

  2212. us in

  2213. taking

  2214. communion

  2215. together

  2216. let's do

  2217. that now

  2218. once

  2219. with

  2220. together

  2221. oh

  2222. hello

  2223. here

  2224. have

  2225. a

  2226. let's

  2227. get

  2228. and

  2229. I 이게

  2230. can

  2231. use

  2232. Amen.

  2233. Amen.

  2234. Amen.

2235. Okay, let's open this up.

2236. Friends, one thing with prophecy is the specificity of it.

2237. And God doesn't just say in general terms, you know, I love you.

2238. That's good to know, but he knows your specific need, your specific situation.

2239. Communion is like that as well.

2240. We know God loves us.

  2241. The Bible tells us.

2242. But how do we know it?

2243. Well, Jesus says, I died on the cross for you.

2244. My body was broken for you.

2245. I shed my blood for you.

2246. Friends, if you follow Jesus, I don't know what state of mind you're in this morning.

  2247. Maybe you feel unworthy.

  2248. You feel unwelcome.

2249. You feel like if God knew or if you, Kevin, if you knew what was going on in my life, maybe you wouldn't welcome me.

2250. No, God knows everything about you.

2251. In fact, no, God knows you better than you know yourself.

2252. God says, you're probably worse than you think you are.

2253. But still, I went to the cross for you.

2254. I love you more than you'll ever even comprehend.

2255. Friends, as we take this communion, Christ's body was broken, not just for the world in general, for you.

2256. That your sins might be atoned.

2257. That your sins might be covered.

2258. That you could become a child, a son, a daughter of God.

2259. Christ's body broken for you.

  2260. Let's eat this together.

2261. In Christ's blood shed on the cross to make an eternal covenant.

2262. A covenant of peace and grace that will never be broken for all eternity.

2263. You will be in Christ with him, loved by him, because he died on the cross for you.

2264. If you're a believer, Christ's blood shed on the cross for you.

  2265. Let's drink together.

2266. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your grace.

2267. Thank you for your mercy.

  2268. We love you.

  2269. We need you.

2270. God, more than anything else, may we be built up around the gospel.

2271. May the gospel renew and encourage us.

  2272. Strengthen us.

2273. May we live by faith.

2274. This week, may we love you and trust you and obey you.

2275. Because we know you are Christ and King and we are in you.

2276. Our life is safe in you.

2277. Help us to pray in your wonderful name.

  2278. Amen.
