  1. Okay, good morning. If you are new to Watermark, my name is Kevin. I'm one of the leaders here.

  2. It's great to see you and to be with you this morning.

  3. Now, if you're new, you might not know, but the last four weeks we've been working through the latter part of 1 Corinthians.

  4. 1 Corinthians 12, 13, and 14.

  5. And the reason is because this is possibly the New Testament's most concise teaching on the spiritual gifts,

  6. what the Bible has to say about spiritual gifts.

  7. And the reason we've been doing that is because as a church we want to grow in both our understanding, our theology,

  8. but also our practice, our usage of spiritual gifts.

  9. But we want to be a church that's governed by God's Word.

  10. We want to be controlled by what God says, not by culture or what any people say.

  11. So we've been looking at the Scriptures, right?

  12. But there is a challenge.

  13. And the challenge is that although 1 Corinthians 12 to 14 has a lot to say about spiritual gifts,

  14. it's actually, spiritual gifts is a very small part of the entire Bible's teaching

  15. about the work and the ministry of and the person of the Holy Spirit.

  16. In other words, when we think of what does it mean to be a Spirit-filled church,

  17. a Spirit-dependent church, a church that's walking in step with the Spirit,

  18. living by the Spirit, dependent of the Spirit,

  19. being transformed and renewed by the person and the ministry of the Holy Spirit,

  20. spiritual gifts, such as what we've been talking about,

  21. is a very small percentage of that, maybe less than 10% of the Bible's teaching.

  22. And so the question remains, well, we want to be a Spirit-dependent church,

  23. a church that's filled with God's Spirit and walking and dependent on Him.

  24. What does that mean in its totality?

  25. And so this morning, what I want us to do is to close off this kind of mini-series

  26. by looking at a lot more of the Bible's teaching.

  27. What does it look like when a church or a group of people, an individual,

  28. encounters God, the Holy Spirit, in a profound and wonderful way?

  29. And so that's what we're going to look at today.

  30. And we're going to do that by looking at Acts chapter 1 and 2.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  31. And so I'm going to pray for us, and then Alan and Kat are going to come read God's Word.

  32. Let me pray for us, and then we'll dive in.

  33. Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ, wonderful Spirit of God,

  34. we come before you this morning because we want you to speak to us.

  35. Lord, as Alan and Kat read your Word to us, won't you speak to us?

  36. Let these words go deep in our heart.

  37. May we see something of who you are and who we are in you.

  38. May we see what it means to be a church that is wholly dependent on you

  39. and filled with you and walking with you.

  40. And God wants you to call us to become the kind of church that you want us to be.

  41. So Spirit of God, I ask you, come and speak to us through your Word.

  42. In your wonderful and gracious name, amen.

  43. Let's listen to the reading of God's Word.

  44. Today's scripture reading comes from Acts chapter 1 to 2.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  45. You can follow along on the screen your Bibles or the bulletin.

  46. So when they had come together, they asked him,

  47. Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?

  48. He said to them,

  49. It is not for you to know times or season that the Father has fixed by his own authority,

  50. but you will receive the power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  51. and you will be my witness in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria

  52. and to the end of the earth.

  53. When the day of Pentecost arrived, when they were all together in one place,

  54. and suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind,

  55. and it filled the entire house where they were sitting,

  56. and divided tongues as a fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

  57. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

  58. and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  59. But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them.

  60. Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem,

  61. let this be known to you and give ear to my words.

  62. For these people are not drunk as you suppose,

  63. since it is only the third hour of the day.

  64. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel.

  65. And in the last days it shall be, God declares,

  66. that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.

  67. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

  68. and your young men shall see visions,

  69. and your old men shall dream dreams.

  70. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord

  71. shall be saved.

  72. Men of Israel, hear these words.

  73. Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God

  74. with mighty works and wonders,

  75. and signs that God did through him in your midst.

  76. As you yourself know,

  77. this Jesus delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God,

  78. you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

  79. God raised him up, losing the pangs of death,

  80. because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

  81. This Jesus raised up, and of that we are all witnesses,

  82. being therefore exalted on the right hand of God.

  83. And having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit,

  84. he has poured out this,

  85. that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.

  86. For David did not ascend into the heavens,

  87. but he himself says,

  88. The Lord said to my Lord,

  89. Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

  90. Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain

  91. that God has made him both Lord and Christ,

  92. this Jesus whom you crucified.

  93. Now when they heard this,

  94. they were cut to the heart

  95. and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,

  96. Brothers, what shall we do?

  97. And Peter said to them,

  98. Repent and be baptized,

  99. every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ,

  100. for the forgiveness of your sins,

  101. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  102. For the promise is for you and for your children

  103. and for all who are far off,

  104. everyone whom the Lord our God calls himself.

  105. And with many other words he bore witness

  106. and continued to exhort them,

  107. saying,

  108. Save yourselves from this crooked generation.

  109. So those who received his word were baptized

  110. and there were added that day about 3,000 souls.

  111. And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching

  112. and the fellowship,

  113. to the breaking of bread and the prayers,

  114. and all came upon every soul,

  115. and many wonders and signs were being done

  116. through the apostles.

  117. And all who believed were together

  118. and had all things in common,

  119. and they were selling their possessions and belongings

  120. and distributing the proceeds to all

  121. as any had need.

  122. And day by day,

  123. attending the temple together

  124. and breaking bread in their homes,

  125. they received their food

  126. with glad and generous hearts,

  127. praising God and having favor

  128. with all the people.

  129. And the Lord added to the number,

  130. day by day,

  131. those who were being saved.

  132. This is the word of God.

  133. Okay, thank you, Ellen and Kat.

  134. Many years ago,

  135. I was in a conversation with somebody

  136. and he made a comment

  137. about a certain church,

  138. or denomination,

  139. type of churches,

  140. a group of churches,

  141. and his comment was this.

  142. He said,

  143. those churches are so dead

  144. that the Holy Spirit probably falls asleep

  145. when he walks through the door.

  146. And I remember being taken aback

  147. by the comment for two reasons.

  148. The first one is,

  149. it came across as quite opinionated,

  150. quite arrogant,

  151. as if to say,

  152. the Holy Spirit loves out kinds of churches,

  153. but those churches he doesn't.

  154. But the other reason was,

  155. I actually had family members

  156. that were part of that denomination.

  157. And I remember hearing stories

  158. at that time

  159. of God really moving powerfully

  160. in those churches

  161. and changing people's lives

  162. and bringing people to saving faith.

  163. And so the comment struck me as,

  164. not only opinionated,

  165. but just not true.

  166. But it raises the question,

  167. what does it look like

  168. for a church to be filled of the Spirit?

  169. What does the Spirit-filled church look like?

  170. Well, in order to do that,

  171. we're gonna look at Acts,

  172. chapter one and two.

  173. And you'll remember

  174. how the book of Acts starts off.

  175. Jesus tells his apostles,

  176. his disciples,

  177. to wait in Jerusalem

  178. until the promise of the Holy Spirit

  179. is given to them.

  180. This was a promise

  181. that the prophets in the Old Testament

  182. had spoken about.

  183. And John the Baptist,

  184. the final of the Old Testament prophets,

  185. in a sense says,

  186. I baptize you with water,

  187. but there will come one after me

  188. who will baptize you

  189. with the Holy Spirit.

  190. And so Jesus says,

  191. wait and pray

  192. for that day to happen.

  193. And so the disciples do.

  194. They wait and they pray

  195. for 10 whole days.

  196. We've got prayer meeting this Thursday.

  197. It won't go on for 10 days,

  198. I promise you.

  199. But that's what they do.

  200. For 10 days they're praying

  201. and eventually on the day of Pentecost,

  202. God delivers on his promise

  203. and he pours out his Spirit

  204. in a most powerful and amazing way.

  205. And on that day,

  206. the New Testament church is born.

  207. So what does the New Testament church look like?

  208. What does the Spirit-filled church look like?

  209. Well, I want us just to think

  210. about a couple of things.

  211. And the first one is this.

  212. The first mark,

  213. the Spirit's presence and power

  214. upon a church or an individual

  215. is a profound sense of awe

  216. and reverence for the majesty of God.

  217. A profound sense of awe.

  218. When God's Spirit comes upon us,

  219. there's a profound sense of awe and majesty.

  220. We see this throughout the book of Acts

  221. and throughout the Bible,

  222. that when God's people,

  223. either an individual or a church,

  224. encounters the living God,

  225. the first response is not light-hearted laughter

  226. or kind of soppy emotionalism.

  227. It's a profound sense of awe

  228. and arrestation,

  229. a profound sense of being in the presence

  230. of one infinitely mightier

  231. and more majestic

  232. and categorically different

  233. from anything we had ever experienced

  234. or seen or witnessed before.

  235. And it's like God's presence arrests us.

  236. I don't know if you've ever had an experience like this

  237. in another setting.

  238. Maybe you are,

  239. I was thinking about if you're walking on the mountain,

  240. the peak,

  241. or you're hiking maybe at night

  242. and you hear a rustle in the bushes, right?

  243. And you freeze.

  244. Or maybe you see a snake,

  245. you know,

  246. on the side of the path.

  247. And the first thing is you freeze, right?

  248. Even if you don't want to,

  249. you're just frozen with fright.

  250. When God's Spirit comes upon a people,

  251. a person,

  252. there's a sense that it arrests us.

  253. We don't just go on with life as normal.

  254. There's no arresting that takes place

  255. in almost fear and dread

  256. in light of the awesomeness

  257. and the majesty

  258. of whose presence we are.

  259. I think we see something of that

  260. in Acts chapter 2 here

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  261. when the Spirit is poured out on the disciples

  262. and Peter is filled with the Spirit.

  263. He stands up and he preaches the gospel.

  264. He tells them about Jesus.

  265. And look what it says.

  266. Look at verse 37.

  267. It says,

  268. Now when they heard his words,

  269. they were cut to the heart.

  270. That means they were seized.

  271. They were taken a hold of.

  272. And they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,

  273. Brothers, what must we do?

  274. It's like they don't just go on with life.

  275. Nobody goes to the coffee station afterwards

  276. and says,

  277. Nice sermon, pastor.

  278. Good job today.

  279. They cry out,

  280. Tell us what we must do.

  281. Something's got to change.

  282. How do we get saved

  283. in light of what you've told us?

  284. And Peter says,

  285. Turn to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  286. And look at verse 43.

  287. It says,

  288. And awe came upon every soul.

  289. This deep reverence.

  290. This life had changed

  291. because they'd encountered the living God.

  292. You know,

  293. Ray Ortlund tells this story.

  294. Ray Ortlund's one of my heroes.

  295. And he tells this story

  296. when he was a teenager.

  297. His dad was a pastor.

  298. And sometimes he'd be in church

  299. and his dad would be preaching.

  300. And it was a pretty conservative,

  301. respectable church in North America.

  302. And he says,

  303. Sometimes during his dad's sermon,

  304. the middle of the sermon,

  305. there'd be such a profound sense

  306. of God's majesty in the room

  307. that respectable, honorable,

  308. suit and tie wearing members

  309. of the congregation

  310. would gently get up from their seats

  311. and walk down the aisle

  312. to the front of the hall

  313. and before the piano

  314. would just get down on their knees

  315. and weep.

  316. The weep in the presence of majesty

  317. as the eyes were opened

  318. to see who God is.

  319. I think the closest thing

  320. that I've ever come to this

  321. was actually just a few weeks ago.

  322. I don't know if you remember,

  323. four or five weeks ago,

  324. we were looking at Isaiah chapter six

  325. and I'd been meditating on it

  326. the whole week

  327. and my heart was full

  328. of this passage

  329. of the majesty

  330. and the glory of God.

  331. And afterwards,

  332. Alan led us in a song,

  333. that song,

  334. Holy Forever.

  335. And as we were singing this song,

  336. I was standing over here

  337. and I was filled

  338. with such a sense

  339. of the sheer glory

  340. and majesty of God

  341. that there's almost a sense

  342. I was afraid of my life.

  343. And actually,

  344. I was standing over here

  345. and I kept on taking

  346. a step further back

  347. and another step back

  348. and I kept on walking back

  349. until I bumped into the chairs.

  350. There's kind of a sense of,

  351. I didn't want to get too close.

  352. I kind of was aware

  353. of my brokenness

  354. and my depravity

  355. and God's majesty

  356. and I thought,

  357. if I'm not careful,

  358. I don't know if I'm going to get

  359. out of this room alive.

  360. There's such a sense

  361. of the awe,

  362. the transcendence,

  363. the glory of God.

  364. And that's what happens

  365. when God's people

  366. encounter the Spirit of God.

  367. There's not a frivolity to it.

  368. There's a transcendence,

  369. a power,

  370. a reverence

  371. to the majesty

  372. and the glory of God.

  373. And we see this again

  374. in Revelation, right?

  375. John encounters God

  376. and he falls down

  377. as though dead.

  378. Seeing God,

  379. he's astounded

  380. by his majesty.

  381. What does the

  382. Spirit-filled church look like?

  383. Yes, there's joy.

  384. Yes, there's contentment.

  385. Yes, there's peace.

  386. But there's a profound sense

  387. of awe and reverence

  388. in the sheer majesty

  389. and glory of God.

  390. But then,

  391. and that leads us

  392. to the second thing.

  393. The second distinction

  394. of the Spirit-filled church

  395. is deep repentance.

  396. Look at our passage here.

  397. Look at verse 37

  398. and onwards.

  399. Look what happens here.

  400. Jeremy spoke about this

  401. a few minutes ago.

  402. It says,

  403. when they heard this

  404. they were cut to the hearts

  405. and they said to Peter

  406. and the apostles,

  407. brothers,

  408. what shall we do?

  409. In other words,

  410. what must we do to be saved?

  411. And Peter said to them,

  412. repent and be baptized

  413. every one of you

  414. in the name of the Lord

  415. Jesus Christ

  416. for the forgiveness

  417. of your sins.

  418. You will receive the gift

  419. of the Holy Spirit

  420. for the promise

  421. is for you

  422. and for your children,

  423. for all who are far off,

  424. everyone whom the Lord

  425. our God calls.

  426. And with many words

  427. he bore witness

  428. and continued to exhort them,

  429. saying save yourselves

  430. from this crooked generation.

  431. And so those who received

  432. his word were baptized.

  433. Friends,

  434. when God moves upon a church,

  435. when God's spirit

  436. moves upon a church,

  437. there's always profound

  438. and deep repentance.

  439. Now,

  440. if you're new to church

  441. this morning,

  442. that word repentance

  443. may,

  444. you may not be familiar with it.

  445. And it may sound quite strange.

  446. It may sound like

  447. a very heavy word.

  448. You may think

  449. when the church talks

  450. about repentance

  451. we're talking about

  452. shaming you

  453. and guilt tripping you

  454. and making you feel bad.

  455. And you may feel like

  456. I feel bad enough

  457. about life as it is

  458. and now I come to church

  459. and you make me feel

  460. even worse.

  461. Thanks very much.

  462. But actually,

  463. that's not the point at all.

  464. When the Bible

  465. talks about repentance,

  466. it's actually the opposite

  467. of what we often think.

  468. The Bible's call

  469. to invitation

  470. is always an invitation

  471. to life,

  472. to freedom,

  473. to peace,

  474. to life

  475. in all this fullness.

  476. in John Bunyan's book,

  477. John Bunyan wrote a book

  478. called The Pilgrim's Progress

  479. about 400 years ago.

  480. And in this book,

  481. it's an analogy

  482. of a man who goes

  483. on this journey.

  484. He comes to faith in Christ

  485. and it's his spiritual journey

  486. through life.

  487. But in the beginning

  488. of this book,

  489. this man,

  490. his name's Christian,

  491. he has this profound

  492. burden on his back.

  493. It's this picture

  494. of a backpack

  495. or a rucksack

  496. on your back

  497. and he's got

  498. this heavy burden

  499. and he's trudging

  500. through life

  501. and it's heavy

  502. and it's hard

  503. and he can't get rid of it.

  504. And at one point,

  505. he comes to a cross

  506. and at the cross,

  507. this burden

  508. gets released

  509. from his back.

  510. And he feels the sense

  511. for the first time

  512. in his life,

  513. the sense of freedom,

  514. the sense of lightness,

  515. the sense of joy,

  516. the sense of life.

  517. As this burden

  518. that he's been carrying

  519. all his life

  520. gets laid down.

  521. And friends,

  522. the Bible's invitation

  523. to repentance

  524. is an invitation

  525. to turn from death

  526. to life,

  527. from darkness to light,

  528. from carrying our guilt

  529. and our shame

  530. and our inadequacy

  531. to laying that down

  532. and experiencing

  533. the freedom

  534. and the joy

  535. of knowing that Christ

  536. has taken those things

  537. on the cross for us.

  538. Now that doesn't mean

  539. that repentance

  540. is always easy or simple.

  541. Repentance is difficult

  542. because it requires

  543. we lay down our pride

  544. and our ego.

  545. It requires that

  546. for a moment

  547. we lose face before God

  548. and say,

  549. God, it is right.

  550. I am a sinner

  551. in need of grace.

  552. God, I admit

  553. that I have tried

  554. to be my own God.

  555. I've lived for my own glory

  556. and it's gotten me nowhere.

  557. And so at first,

  558. repentance is hard.

  559. It feels like

  560. a part of your ego

  561. needs to die

  562. but it's always

  563. an invitation

  564. to life.

  565. And Jesus said

  566. that when the Spirit

  567. of God comes,

  568. He will come

  569. and convict the world

  570. of sin

  571. and righteousness

  572. and judgment

  573. not in order to shame us

  574. but to liberate us.

  575. But before that happens,

  576. the Spirit impresses upon us

  577. a profound sense

  578. of the ugliness of sin

  579. in our lives

  580. and the depth

  581. and the extent of it.

  582. You know,

  583. this happened to me

  584. a few years ago.

  585. I think I've shared

  586. this story with you before.

  587. One of the prevailing sins

  588. in my life

  589. that I've often struggled with

  590. and I know it doesn't sound

  591. like a very big sin

  592. but is a deep love

  593. for people's approval

  594. and affirmation.

  595. And I know that sounds

  596. very trite and small

  597. but it's an idol

  598. in my life

  599. that trips me up

  600. and gets me

  601. into so much trouble.

  602. I find myself

  603. doing all sorts

  604. of dumb things

  605. that I shouldn't do

  606. and I don't want to do

  607. because I'm scared

  608. to say no to people

  609. and I don't want

  610. to disappoint people.

  611. And what I find

  612. is that for me,

  613. one of the prevailing sins

  614. is that people's approval

  615. and people's affirmation

  616. and people liking me

  617. has this controlling grip

  618. on my life.

  619. And actually,

  620. often I find

  621. it's more important to me

  622. than the person

  623. of Jesus Christ.

  624. And if I'm honest,

  625. that sometimes I love

  626. what people think of me

  627. more than I love Christ.

  628. And I'm meant

  629. to be a pastor, right?

  630. And what that means

  631. is I've got this idol

  632. that I bow down to

  633. and worship

  634. and adore

  635. called approval of man,

  636. love for man.

  637. And one day,

  638. a few years ago,

  639. I was grappling

  640. with this

  641. and praying for this

  642. and I went for a prayer walk

  643. and I said,

  644. God, you've got to change

  645. this in my life.

  646. I hate this thing.

  647. It feels like it controls me

  648. and I can't get rid of it.

  649. God, please come

  650. and change me.

  651. And I was deeply

  652. convicted of it.

  653. And as I was going

  654. on this prayer walk,

  655. I saw in my mind's eye

  656. a picture of like

  657. a chalice or an urn.

  658. It was a dark picture

  659. and out of this chalice,

  660. snakes were coming

  661. out of it.

  662. And in my mind's eye,

  663. I saw this is this idol

  664. that I bow down

  665. and I worship.

  666. And I give reverence

  667. and awe

  668. to this disgusting

  669. snake infested idol

  670. in my life

  671. called the approval of man

  672. and the fear of man.

  673. And this disgusting urn

  674. is actually more precious,

  675. more beautiful to my heart

  676. than Jesus Christ.

  677. And as I went

  678. on this prayer walk,

  679. I said,

  680. God,

  681. you've got to change me.

  682. I hate what this thing

  683. is doing to me.

  684. Lord,

  685. and for the first time

  686. in my life,

  687. what I had thought was

  688. just being a wise pastor,

  689. just caring for people.

  690. Actually,

  691. I saw the depravity

  692. and the ugliness of it.

  693. And God convicted me

  694. of this need

  695. to repent.

  696. And as I cried out to God

  697. and said,

  698. God,

  699. you've got to not only

  700. forgive me,

  701. but you need to save me

  702. and change me.

  703. I felt like God

  704. turned my life around.

  705. And He did that.

  706. He really delivered me

  707. of that.

  708. Maybe some of you

  709. have seen that.

  710. I'm not as nice

  711. as maybe I used to be.

  712. But I didn't,

  713. I wasn't nice

  714. because I really loved you.

  715. I just was nice

  716. because I loved myself.

  717. And I loved what people

  718. thought about me.

  719. Friends,

  720. that's what God's Spirit does.

  721. He brings us to a place

  722. of seeing the ugliness

  723. of sin

  724. and the repulsiveness

  725. of our idols.

  726. So we turn

  727. from death to life.

  728. And we saw this

  729. in Isaiah 6

  730. a few weeks ago, right?

  731. Isaiah sees the majesty

  732. and the glory of God.

  733. God opens his eyes

  734. to see God.

  735. And the first thing

  736. he says is,

  737. God,

  738. you've got to save

  739. those people.

  740. No, that's not what He says.

  741. He says,

  742. woe is me.

  743. I am lost.

  744. I'm ruined.

  745. I'm undone.

  746. I've seen the glory

  747. of the Lord.

  748. And my lips are unclean

  749. and I live amongst

  750. the people of unclean lips.

  751. God's Spirit,

  752. when He comes upon us,

  753. friends,

  754. what does it mean

  755. to be a spiritual church?

  756. It means we'll see

  757. the things in our life

  758. that for years

  759. have been hidden

  760. to our hearts.

  761. And things that we've excused

  762. and said,

  763. oh, I'm just a good

  764. steward of money,

  765. we'll actually see,

  766. no, we're just greedy.

  767. And as we say,

  768. oh, we just care

  769. for this person.

  770. We're just talking

  771. to everyone in our CG

  772. to see how we can love them.

  773. We'll see,

  774. actually,

  775. that's just gossip.

  776. And we'll see

  777. the depravity

  778. of the sin in our lives.

  779. Sorry,

  780. I didn't mean this

  781. to be this heavy.

  782. I just kind of apologize.

  783. When God's Spirit

  784. comes upon us,

  785. we see God

  786. and we see ourselves.

  787. But here's the third thing,

  788. friends,

  789. when God's Spirit

  790. comes upon our church,

  791. upon a group of people,

  792. it's not only

  793. a profound sense

  794. of awe

  795. and deep repentance,

  796. but an overwhelming assurance

  797. of God's profound,

  798. undeserved love

  799. and kindness

  800. and mercy

  801. and grace.

  802. Listen to how

  803. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  804. describes it.

  805. He says,

  806. when God's Spirit

  807. comes upon somebody,

  808. they are given

  809. a clear view

  810. of the love of God

  811. and of the Lord Jesus Christ

  812. and especially

  813. of His death

  814. upon the cross.

  815. At last,

  816. they see it.

  817. Oh,

  818. they'd always believed it

  819. theoretically,

  820. but it'd never become

  821. true for them,

  822. truly become real for them.

  823. They'd honestly believed it,

  824. yes,

  825. but they never felt

  826. its power.

  827. They'd never known

  828. what it was to be melted

  829. by the love of God,

  830. to be broken by it.

  831. They'd never known

  832. what it was to weep,

  833. yes,

  834. with a sense of unworthiness,

  835. but then with love

  836. and joy,

  837. as they realized

  838. that in an individual

  839. and personal way,

  840. the Son of God

  841. loved them

  842. and has given Himself

  843. for them,

  844. and peace comes

  845. into our hearts,

  846. and joy enters

  847. into them,

  848. and we are lost

  849. in love

  850. and praise

  851. for God the Father

  852. and God the Son

  853. and God the Holy Spirit.

  854. Friends,

  855. this is what God's Spirit does.

  856. He assures us

  857. of God's unceasing love

  858. and acceptance,

  859. which leads to profound

  860. confidence

  861. and a conviction.

  862. Previously,

  863. you're timid

  864. and you're shy

  865. and suddenly,

  866. you're now,

  867. you're insecure

  868. and full of self-doubt

  869. and you encounter

  870. God's Spirit

  871. and His love

  872. invades your heart

  873. and it changes

  874. and it transforms you.

  875. And surely,

  876. that's what we see

  877. in Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  878. and 2 here,

  879. right?

  880. Remember,

  881. just six weeks before,

  882. the Apostle Peter,

  883. Jesus is busy on trial,

  884. Peter's watching him

  885. on trial,

  886. a servant girl

  887. comes to him

  888. and says,

  889. aren't you one

  890. of His disciples?

  891. And he says,

  892. no, no, no,

  893. I don't know the man.

  894. She says,

  895. I'm sure I saw you

  896. with him.

  897. He says,

  898. I've never met the man.

  899. I swear in my life,

  900. I don't know

  901. what you're talking about.

  902. And six weeks later,

  903. this same Peter

  904. is standing in front

  905. of the high priests

  906. and the rulers

  907. and authorities,

  908. the very guys

  909. that just crucified Jesus

  910. and saying,

  911. you need to repent.

  912. Christ is Lord.

  913. You crucified him

  914. and you're in trouble.

  915. What's happened to Peter?

  916. The Spirit of God

  917. has come upon him

  918. and being filled

  919. with the power of God

  920. but the love

  921. and the confidence

  922. that He is God's Son

  923. changes him

  924. and transforms him

  925. into a different person.

  926. Friends,

  927. my dear friends,

  928. do you know

  929. the love of God

  930. like this?

  931. Personally,

  932. deeply,

  933. individually,

  934. not just theoretically,

  935. not just doctrinally

  936. or intellectually,

  937. do you know

  938. that Christ

  939. went to the cross

  940. for you

  941. because of His love

  942. for you?

  943. That's what

  944. the Spirit of God does.

  945. He takes what's written

  946. in our heads

  947. and He writes it

  948. on our hearts

  949. in a way

  950. that changes us.

  951. And the Bible,

  952. the Acts,

  953. the way the Spirit

  954. comes upon the church

  955. is described

  956. as the outpouring

  957. of the Spirit.

  958. God pours His Spirit

  959. on the church.

  960. Look at verse 17.

  961. It says,

  962. In the last days

  963. it shall be,

  964. God declares

  965. that He will pour out

  966. His Spirit

  967. upon all flesh.

  968. Verse 18,

  969. I think He says

  970. the same thing.

  971. Let me just get

  972. in my Bible here.

  973. Verse 18,

  974. Even on my male servants,

  975. my female servants,

  976. in those days

  977. I will pour out

  978. my Spirit.

  979. Verse 33,

  980. This Spirit

  981. He has poured out

  982. upon us,

  983. says Peter.

  984. Well,

  985. there's another place

  986. in the New Testament

  987. where God talks

  988. about the pouring

  989. out of the Holy Spirit.

  990. Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  991. He says this,

  992. We rejoice

  993. in our sufferings

  994. knowing that suffering

  995. produces endurance.

  996. Endurance produces character.

  997. Character produces hope.

  998. And hope does not disappoint us.

  999. Which,

  1000. that's an interesting phrase.

  1001. I think hope

  1002. often disappoints us.

1003. You hope for a promotion

  1004. at work

1005. and you don't get it,

  1006. it's disappointing.

1007. You hope for a relationship

  1008. to work out

  1009. that doesn't work out.

1010. That's the problem with hope.

  1011. It often disappoints us,

  1012. isn't it?

  1013. Paul says here,

  1014. the kind of hope

  1015. that God,

  1016. the Holy Spirit

  1017. pours into our hearts

  1018. doesn't disappoint us.

  1019. Why?

  1020. Because God's love

  1021. has been poured

  1022. into our hearts.

  1023. When God's Spirit

  1024. is poured upon us,

  1025. His love

1026. is poured into our hearts

  1027. through the Holy Spirit

  1028. that changes

  1029. and transforms us.

  1030. God takes the truth

  1031. of the gospel

  1032. and He writes them

  1033. in our hearts

  1034. in a personal way.

  1035. And what this means

  1036. is that God takes

  1037. insecure people

1038. and He makes them secure.

  1039. He takes anxious people

  1040. and He makes them

  1041. remarkably calm.

  1042. He takes hopeless people

  1043. and He gives us

  1044. sudden new vision

  1045. and purpose

  1046. and hope again.

  1047. And conflict ceases.

  1048. Grace abounds.

  1049. Forgiveness

  1050. and reconciliation

  1051. becomes common

  1052. and normative.

  1053. You have a conflict

  1054. with someone in church

  1055. and God's Spirit

1056. is poured into our hearts

1057. and the love of God

1058. is poured into our hearts

  1059. and rather than me

  1060. coming to Claire

  1061. and pointing out

  1062. it's all her fault

1063. and saying it's all your fault,

1064. suddenly I come to her

1065. and say, hey I'm so sorry.

  1066. Actually I see now

  1067. what I've done.

1068. And she says, no, no,

1069. actually it's not your fault,

  1070. it's my fault.

1071. And the love of God

  1072. transforms us

  1073. and changes us.

  1074. The Holy Spirit

1075. writes the love of God

  1076. personally into our hearts.

  1077. And of course

  1078. this inpouring

  1079. of soul anchoring

  1080. love and assurance

  1081. and security

  1082. generates an unusual

  1083. outpouring

  1084. of love and tenderness

  1085. and softness

  1086. in our hearts

  1087. towards others.

  1088. Suddenly we're no longer

  1089. living for ourselves

  1090. and our own plans.

  1091. We live for others.

1092. And God's love for us

  1093. means we start

  1094. to love others.

  1095. And look what happens

  1096. here in Acts.

  1097. Look at the end

  1098. of chapter 2

  1099. verse 44.

  1100. It says,

  1101. And all who believed

  1102. were together

1103. and all things in common

  1104. they were selling

  1105. their positions

  1106. and belongings

  1107. and distributing

  1108. the proceeds

1109. to all as any had need.

  1110. And day by day

  1111. attending the temple

  1112. together

  1113. breaking bread

  1114. in their homes

  1115. they received their food

  1116. with glad and sincere

  1117. and generous hearts

  1118. praising God

  1119. and having favor

  1120. with all people.

1121. We see the same thing

  1122. in chapter 4.

  1123. The full number

  1124. of those who believed

  1125. were one heart

  1126. and one soul

  1127. and nobody said

1128. that any of his possessions

  1129. belonged to him

  1130. or were his own

  1131. but they had everything

  1132. in common.

  1133. Friends,

  1134. the love of God.

  1135. The love of God.

  1136. Do you know it?

  1137. Have you experienced it?

  1138. Friends,

  1139. are you secure

1140. in the love of God?

  1141. Or do you say,

  1142. yes,

1143. I know Jesus died for me

  1144. because he loves me

  1145. but you're wracked

  1146. with guilt

  1147. and insecurity

  1148. and fear

  1149. and shame.

1150. This is what God does

  1151. when the Holy Spirit

1152. poured out in our church

  1153. and in our lives

  1154. and in our hearts.

1155. The love of the Lord Jesus

  1156. becomes real

  1157. and perceptible

  1158. and perceivable

  1159. to our hearts.

  1160. It shapes the way

  1161. we respond to situations

  1162. and storms

  1163. and challenges.

  1164. Is it evident

  1165. and visible

1166. to those who are closest to you?

  1167. The love of God

  1168. to our hearts.

  1169. Well,

  1170. the Spirit of God

  1171. knowing does that.

  1172. He does,

  1173. fourthly,

  1174. empowers us

  1175. for bold evangelism

  1176. and witness.

1177. Look at what happens here.

  1178. Look at the quote.

  1179. Peter here,

  1180. when he stands up

1181. and the Spirit comes upon him,

1182. he quotes from Joel chapter 2

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  1183. and he says,

1184. Joel in the Old Testament

  1185. promised this is what

  1186. was going to happen.

1187. And so look at what

  1188. Joel says,

  1189. verse 17.

  1190. He says,

  1191. In the last days

  1192. it shall be,

  1193. declares God,

1194. that I will pour out

1195. my Spirit in all flesh.

  1196. On your sons

  1197. and your daughters

  1198. they shall prophesy.

  1199. Okay,

  1200. that's an important word.

1201. Young men shall see visions.

1202. Old men will dream dreams.

1203. Even on my male servants

  1204. and female servants,

  1205. in those days

1206. I will pour out my Spirit

  1207. and they shall prophesy.

  1208. What does Joel mean

  1209. when he means this?

  1210. Well,

  1211. I don't think Joel

  1212. simply means that

  1213. in small group

  1214. or community group

  1215. everyone's going to have

  1216. a word of knowledge

1217. or a prophecy for one another.

  1218. Okay,

  1219. it might mean that,

  1220. of course.

1221. God gives us spiritual gifts.

1222. We spoke about that last week.

  1223. Paul says,

  1224. don't despise prophecy.

  1225. Don't despise speaking tongues.

  1226. That's fine.

1227. But when Joel says that

  1228. men and women,

  1229. young men,

  1230. old men,

  1231. young women,

  1232. old women,

  1233. employees,

  1234. employees,

  1235. servants and bosses,

  1236. everyone will prophesy.

  1237. The word prophecy means

  1238. will proclaim

  1239. the excellency

1240. and the awesomeness of God.

1241. They will preach the gospel.

1242. They will go into their workplaces.

1243. They will go into their sports fields.

  1244. They'll go into

  1245. their social clubs.

  1246. They'll tell colleagues

  1247. and family members

  1248. and neighbors and friends,

1249. this is who God is.

1250. When God's spirit comes upon us,

  1251. all people,

  1252. rich,

  1253. poor,

  1254. young,

  1255. old,

  1256. educated,

  1257. uneducated,

  1258. will be so filled

1259. with God's spirit and power

1260. that they won't be able

  1261. to help themselves

1262. as they speak about Jesus.

1263. And that's what we see in Acts,

  1264. right?

  1265. In Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

1266. the apostles are called in

  1267. and they threatened,

  1268. hey,

1269. don't tell anyone about Jesus

1270. otherwise we will arrest you

  1271. and beat you up.

1272. And they do beat them

1273. and they send them out

1274. and what do they do?

  1275. And so every day

  1276. in the temple

1277. and from house to house,

  1278. they did not cease

  1279. teaching everyone

  1280. about Jesus Christ.

  1281. Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1282. with great power,

1283. the apostles were giving testimony

  1284. to the resurrection

  1285. of the Lord Jesus

1286. and grace was upon them.

  1287. Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  1288. Philip opened his mouth

1289. and beginning with the scriptures,

1290. he told them the good news

  1291. about Jesus.

1292. They throw them in jail

1293. and what do they do?

  1294. They tell the jailers

  1295. about Jesus.

1296. They release them from jail

1297. and they go into the marketplace

  1298. and they tell people

  1299. about Jesus.

1300. They enjoy the favor of man

  1301. and they tell them

  1302. about Jesus.

  1303. They threatened

  1304. and beaten

  1305. and accused

  1306. and they tell people

  1307. about Jesus.

1308. In each and every circumstance,

  1309. they cannot help themselves

  1310. but tell people

  1311. that Christ is Lord

1312. and they preach the gospel

  1313. to one another

  1314. and that's why

  1315. the book of Acts

1316. is called the book of Acts.

  1317. It means the act

  1318. of the disciples

1319. but it actually should be

1320. the acts of the Holy Spirit

  1321. empowering the disciples

  1322. to proclaim the gospel.

  1323. Friends,

  1324. what does a spirit-filled church

  1325. look like?

1326. It means we so love God

  1327. and love others

  1328. that we cannot keep

1329. this good news to ourselves

  1330. and we find ways

  1331. and opportunities

  1332. and we overflow

  1333. with the wonder

  1334. of who Christ is

1335. that he died on the cross

1336. as we were saying earlier,

  1337. for sinners like me

  1338. and we tell people

  1339. about Christ.

  1340. What does a spirit-filled church

  1341. look like?

  1342. Lastly,

  1343. the spirit-filled church

1344. looks like an insatiable love

  1345. and delight

  1346. and treasuring

  1347. of Jesus Christ.

  1348. When you read

  1349. the book of Acts

  1350. and the rest

  1351. of the New Testament,

  1352. what we see again

  1353. and again and again

  1354. is that the work

  1355. of the Spirit

1356. is to make the church

  1357. more focused

  1358. and in love

  1359. with the person

  1360. of Jesus Christ.

  1361. The irony is

  1362. the spirit-filled church

  1363. is not focused

  1364. on the Holy Spirit.

  1365. The spirit-filled church

  1366. is empowered

  1367. by the Spirit

  1368. to worship

  1369. and glory

  1370. Christ

  1371. and God the Father.

  1372. In John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  1373. Jesus says this,

  1374. he says,

  1375. when the Spirit comes,

  1376. he will bear witness

  1377. about me.

  1378. Now,

  1379. the Holy Spirit

1380. is like this giant spotlight

  1381. that shines

  1382. and says,

  1383. look at Christ,

  1384. see Christ,

  1385. see what he's done

  1386. on the cross,

1387. see how glorious he is,

  1388. see his majesty

  1389. but see his humility.

  1390. The Holy Spirit

  1391. bears witness

  1392. about Christ

  1393. in our hearts

1394. and then in chapter 16,

1395. he says this amazing thing.

  1396. I think we've got

  1397. on the slide,

  1398. he says this,

  1399. when the Spirit

  1400. of truth comes,

  1401. he will guide you

  1402. in all truth,

  1403. okay,

  1404. so the Holy Spirit

1405. comes and fills our hearts

  1406. and he guides us

  1407. into truth.

  1408. What truth

1409. does he guide us into?

  1410. Does he tell us

  1411. the truth about,

  1412. you know,

  1413. equals MC squared

  1414. and AI

  1415. and technology

  1416. and how life works?

  1417. No,

  1418. the truth

  1419. that he reveals

  1420. to our hearts

  1421. is that Christ

  1422. is worthy

  1423. of our worship.

  1424. He will glorify me.

  1425. The great J.I. Packer

  1426. said this little verse,

  1427. John 16 verse 14

    John 16:14

1428. is the most important verse

  1429. in the entire Bible

  1430. in helping us

  1431. to understand

  1432. the work

  1433. and the ministry

  1434. of the Holy Spirit.

  1435. When the Spirit

  1436. comes upon our hearts,

  1437. he fills us

  1438. with a sense

  1439. of the all-sufficiency,

  1440. the all-satisfying

  1441. wonder of Jesus,

  1442. that Christ

  1443. is glorious

  1444. and wonderful

  1445. and enough for us.

  1446. John Piper says

  1447. his passion,

  1448. the passion

  1449. of the Holy Spirit

  1450. is to make much

  1451. of Jesus

  1452. in our hearts,

  1453. in our lives,

  1454. in our churches.

1455. He sent into the world

  1456. to open the eyes

  1457. of our hearts

  1458. that we might see

  1459. the magnificence

  1460. of Christ

  1461. and glory in him

  1462. and glorify him.

  1463. Friends,

1464. this is what we see

  1465. in Acts

  1466. in the New Testament.

  1467. That everywhere we go,

  1468. the Spirit-filled church,

  1469. they cannot help themselves

  1470. but worship

  1471. and glorify

  1472. and treasure

  1473. and delight

  1474. in Jesus Christ,

  1475. praising him.

  1476. And in the marketplace

  1477. and in the temple

  1478. and in their homes

  1479. and on the way,

  1480. they're opening the Scriptures

  1481. and they're showing people

  1482. Jesus is wonderful,

  1483. Jesus is sufficient,

  1484. Jesus is enough.

  1485. Friends,

  1486. if you're a Christian

  1487. this morning,

1488. I want to ask you,

1489. is that true of you?

  1490. Is your heart

  1491. full of Jesus?

  1492. Is your heart

  1493. delighting

1494. in the Lord Jesus Christ?

  1495. Is your relationship

  1496. with Christ

  1497. one of delight

  1498. and treasuring Jesus

  1499. above all things?

  1500. Friends,

  1501. if you're anything

  1502. like me,

  1503. I know it's not true

1504. of me all the time.

  1505. Other things

  1506. grab my attention.

  1507. Other things

  1508. become more important

  1509. to me.

  1510. I get distracted

  1511. by things like

  1512. saving money

  1513. for the future.

  1514. Distracted by kids

  1515. and education

  1516. and career progression.

  1517. We get distracted

  1518. by house renovations

  1519. and exams

  1520. or studies

  1521. or relationships.

  1522. And Jesus

  1523. becomes smaller

  1524. in our hearts

  1525. and these things

  1526. become bigger

  1527. in our hearts.

1528. And one of the goals,

  1529. one of the roles

  1530. of the Holy Spirit

  1531. is to so invade

  1532. our hearts.

  1533. We need the Spirit

  1534. of the living God

1535. to break into our hearts

  1536. and make Christ

  1537. big in our hearts

  1538. and our own kingdom

  1539. small again.

  1540. And so I want

  1541. to ask you,

  1542. what's your relationship

1543. with the Lord Jesus Christ?

  1544. Is Christ big

  1545. in our hearts?

1546. Or do we just pay

  1547. lip service

  1548. and go on

  1549. with our lives?

  1550. Dear friends,

  1551. this is what

  1552. the Spirit-filled church

  1553. looks like.

  1554. Spiritual gifts

  1555. such as prophecy,

  1556. speaking tongues,

  1557. a word of knowledge,

  1558. a spiritual revelation.

  1559. Yes, we need them.

  1560. Wonderful.

  1561. God, may we have

  1562. more of them.

  1563. Absolutely.

  1564. Signs and wonders,

  1565. miraculous healings,

  1566. I'm all for that.

  1567. But oh dear friends,

  1568. can't you see

  1569. how much more

  1570. the Spirit of God

  1571. wants to do

1572. in us in the church?

  1573. Let's not settle

  1574. for a few prophecies

  1575. here and then

  1576. and say we are

  1577. a Spirit-filled church.

  1578. No friends,

1579. let's get on our knees.

  1580. Let's humble ourselves

  1581. before God.

  1582. Let's cry out

  1583. to the living God

  1584. and ask for Him

1585. to pour out His Spirit

  1586. upon us

  1587. in power

  1588. and majesty

  1589. and in awe.

  1590. Martin Lord Jones again,

1591. let me close with this.

  1592. He explains

  1593. what the Spirit-empowered

  1594. church looks like

  1595. and he says this.

  1596. I think I've got

  1597. a quote up there.

  1598. He says,

  1599. Do we know anything

  1600. about this,

  1601. my dear friends?

  1602. Do we believe

  1603. in God coming

  1604. and doing these things

1605. not only that we cannot do

1606. but that we cannot control,

  1607. cannot explain?

  1608. I ask you,

1609. do you long to know

  1610. such things,

  1611. to see such things

  1612. happening again

  1613. in our day?

  1614. Are you praying

  1615. for such things?

1616. This is what God can do.

1617. This is what God has done.

  1618. Let us together decide

  1619. to implore Him,

  1620. to plead with Him

  1621. to do this again.

1622. Not that we may have

  1623. the experience

  1624. or the excitement

1625. but that His mighty hand

  1626. might be known

  1627. and His great name

  1628. may be glorified

  1629. and magnified

  1630. among all people.

  1631. Friends,

1632. next week is our church retreat

1633. and we're going to be

  1634. talking about these things

  1635. a little bit more.

  1636. Oscar's going to be

  1637. speaking on this theme

  1638. more as well.

1639. Some of you might know

  1640. I'm going on sabbatical

1641. the week after the retreat

  1642. and so I won't see you

  1643. for a while.

1644. If you're not at the retreat,

  1645. I'll see you again

  1646. in 2025.

1647. But while I'm on sabbatical,

1648. I am not just going

  1649. to be on holiday

1650. and I'm not just going

  1651. to be watching Netflix

  1652. and sipping pina coladas

  1653. by the swimming pool.

  1654. What am I going

1655. to be doing on sabbatical?

1656. I'm going to be praying

  1657. and studying God's Word

  1658. and seeking God

  1659. for this.

  1660. This is going

  1661. to be my prayer

  1662. for my own heart

  1663. and for you

1664. and for us as a church

1665. and for our great city

  1666. that we too

  1667. will be freshly

  1668. and mightily filled

  1669. anew

  1670. with the Holy Spirit

  1671. in a fresh

  1672. and powerful way.

  1673. that we will have

  1674. such a profound sense

  1675. of God's awe

  1676. and reverence

  1677. and fear

  1678. and holiness

1679. and the glory of God

  1680. that it will turn

  1681. our worlds upside down.

  1682. That God,

  1683. whose Word really matters,

1684. that we will live for Him.

  1685. That God,

  1686. the one whose opinion,

1687. the only one whose opinion

  1688. really counts,

  1689. will so explode

  1690. in our hearts

  1691. that the other idols

  1692. of our life

  1693. will fall away

  1694. and become trivial

  1695. into our life

  1696. and we will live

  1697. in fear and trepidation

  1698. and awe and reverence

  1699. before the majesty

1700. and the holiness of God.

1701. I'm going to be praying

1702. that we will be so filled

  1703. with the,

1704. anew with the Holy Spirit

1705. that we will repent deeply

  1706. of our pride

  1707. and our ego

  1708. and maybe the things

  1709. that we,

  1710. and starting with myself,

  1711. the things that

  1712. we've kept secret

  1713. for too long

  1714. will be brought

  1715. into the light.

  1716. That some of us

1717. maybe for the very first time

  1718. will be honest

  1719. with ourselves

  1720. and honest with others.

  1721. That we will know

  1722. and experience

  1723. the freedom

  1724. and the joy

  1725. and the life

  1726. and the peace

  1727. of walking

  1728. in the light.

  1729. Friends,

  1730. I'm praying

1731. that God will show me

1732. deep idols in my heart

1733. that they will be exposed

  1734. to me

1735. and that I will repent

  1736. deeply of these idols.

  1737. That the,

  1738. the,

  1739. the web

  1740. and the roots

  1741. will be disentangled

  1742. from my heart

1743. and that I will live

  1744. in freedom.

  1745. Friends,

  1746. I'm praying

1747. that we as a church

1748. will be so utterly astounded

  1749. by the radical,

  1750. radical love of God

  1751. that it will change

  1752. our lives.

1753. That for many of us

  1754. that have been wracked

  1755. with shame

  1756. and guilt

  1757. our entire lives

  1758. that feel insecure

  1759. and are always afraid

  1760. of what people

  1761. or our parents

  1762. think of us

  1763. for the first time

  1764. will be anchored

  1765. and rooted

  1766. in the profound love

  1767. of God

  1768. that they'll be given

  1769. a security

  1770. to our hearts

  1771. and lives

  1772. we didn't think

  1773. was possible.

  1774. Friends,

  1775. I'm praying

  1776. that God's spirit

  1777. will come upon us

  1778. in a new

  1779. and wonderful way

  1780. that the love

  1781. of God into us

  1782. will flow through us

  1783. to others

1784. and that we will be

  1785. unstoppable

  1786. in sharing the gospel

  1787. with others.

  1788. Friends,

  1789. I'm praying

  1790. that God

  1791. will pour his spirit

  1792. into our hearts

  1793. that we will treasure

  1794. Jesus Christ

  1795. above all things

  1796. that Christ

  1797. will be more precious

  1798. and glorious

  1799. and beautiful

  1800. and wonderful

  1801. and desirous to us

  1802. than anything else

  1803. in all the world

1804. that we will be able

  1805. to walk away

  1806. from any other treasure

1807. to hold on to Jesus.

1808. This is who Christ is.

1809. This is what the spirit

  1810. does in his church.

  1811. This is what God

1812. wants to do in us

  1813. and so will you

  1814. join me in praying

1815. that we will be truly

  1816. a spirit-filled church,

  1817. a God-dependent church.

  1818. Friends,

1819. last thing before I close,

  1820. let me say this.

  1821. In John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  1822. Jesus stands up

  1823. and he says this.

  1824. He says,

  1825. if anybody thirsts,

1826. let him come to me

  1827. and drink.

  1828. Whoever believes in me,

  1829. as the scripture said,

  1830. out of his heart

  1831. will flow rivers

  1832. of living water.

  1833. And John says this,

  1834. he said,

  1835. about the Holy Spirit

1836. who is not yet given.

  1837. Friends,

1838. I want to ask you,

  1839. if you're not a follower

  1840. of Jesus this morning,

1841. Jesus says that your heart

  1842. will always be dry.

  1843. It will always

1844. be like a dry riverbed.

1845. You will always be searching

  1846. for life and hope

1847. in the things of this world

  1848. and they'll never satisfy.

  1849. And maybe they'll satisfy

  1850. for a week or a month

  1851. or a year,

1852. but soon they'll fade away.

  1853. Jesus Christ says

1854. that only as you come to him

1855. will he fill your heart

  1856. to the life,

  1857. the life-giving power

  1858. of the living God,

1859. the life that you were made for.

  1860. Friends,

1861. where are you looking for life?

  1862. What are you hoping

  1863. and trusting in?

1864. What are you giving yourself to?

  1865. It cannot satisfy.

  1866. It cannot save.

  1867. Jesus Christ can.

1868. So why don't you come to him

1869. and he says that as you do,

1870. he will pour the Holy Spirit

  1871. into your heart

1872. and he will do these things

  1873. for you.

1874. Let's come to him now

  1875. and pray.

  1876. Father God,

  1877. wonderful Son,

  1878. Holy Spirit,

  1879. we need you.

  1880. Oh God,

  1881. we need you.

  1882. God,

1883. we confess that our lives

  1884. are a poor reflection

  1885. of what we see

  1886. in the scriptures,

  1887. a poor reflection

  1888. of what we see

1889. in the book of Acts.

  1890. And God,

  1891. so many things

  1892. in this world

  1893. distract us

  1894. and grab our attention

  1895. and grip our hearts

  1896. and you, God,

  1897. have become small.

  1898. Lord,

  1899. I pray

  1900. by a move

  1901. of your spirit,

  1902. won't you pour

  1903. your spirit upon us

  1904. in a fresh way?

  1905. Won't you come

  1906. and fill and flood

  1907. our hearts

  1908. that we will live

  1909. in awe

  1910. and majesty

  1911. and reverence

  1912. before you?

  1913. Won't you come

  1914. and fill our hearts

  1915. that God,

  1916. we will live

  1917. for you

  1918. and you alone.

  1919. God,

  1920. you know each

1921. and every one of us.

  1922. You know

  1923. where we're at

  1924. this morning.

  1925. You know

  1926. the struggles

  1927. in our hearts.

  1928. You know

  1929. the anxieties

  1930. and the fears.

  1931. You know

  1932. the things

  1933. we're worried about.

  1934. The things we trust

  1935. and the things

  1936. that we find

1937. so hard to let go

1938. because for all our lives

  1939. we've held onto it.

  1940. Oh God,

  1941. won't you help us

  1942. this morning.

  1943. Spirit of God,

  1944. come and help us.

  1945. In your great name

  1946. I pray.

  1947. Amen.

  1948. Amen.

  1949. Amen.

  1950. Amen.

  1951. Amen.

  1952. Amen.

  1953. Amen.

  1954. Amen.

  1955. Amen.

  1956. Amen.

  1957. Amen.

  1958. Amen.

  1959. Amen.

  1960. Amen.

  1961. Amen.

  1962. Amen.

  1963. Amen.

  1964. Amen.

  1965. Amen.

  1966. Amen.

  1967. Amen.

  1968. Amen.

  1969. Amen.

  1970. Amen.

  1971. Amen.

  1972. Amen.
