  1. As Neil's outlined, God calls us on a big mission to share the good news of the gospel to all people,

  2. our friends, family, colleagues, neighbors.

  3. But in order for us to do this, to live on the gospel and to honor God's mission for evangelism,

  4. we must be wholly dependent on Him.

  5. Dan and Simon will speak about faith and prayer in a moment,

  6. but I will first talk about the Holy Spirit.

  7. And over the next 20 or so minutes, I'll try to address the two questions that we have just discussed,

  8. plus a third question as well.

  9. First, let's take a walk down memory lane.

  10. Let's remind ourselves, who is the Holy Spirit?

  11. What do we know about the Holy Spirit?

  12. There's a saying in some Christian circles that the Holy Spirit is the forgotten member of the Trinity.

  13. We believe in and we pray to Father God.

  14. We love, trust, and receive the grace of Jesus Christ.

  15. But maybe we don't acknowledge or understand the person of the Holy Spirit as much.

  16. Well, let's go back to basics.

  17. Who is the Holy Spirit?

  18. Number one, the Holy Spirit is a person of the Trinity,

  19. equal in stature, in glory, in sovereignty, in honor,

  20. as the Father, God the Father, as Jesus Christ, God the Son.

  21. And the Holy Spirit's fingerprints are seen throughout Scripture.

  22. Genesis 1, verse 2.

    Genesis 1:2

  23. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep,

  24. and the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, was hovering over the face of the waters.

  25. At creation, the Holy Spirit was there, was present, creating order out of chaos.

  26. And throughout the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit empowered many imperfect men and women

  27. to do supernatural, powerful things for God.

  28. In the New Testament, Jesus was miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit.

  29. At His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended on Christ like a dove.

  30. And throughout His ministry, the Holy Spirit was there with Jesus,

  31. empowering Him as His helper and companion to heal the sick,

  32. to preach with boldness, to cast out demons, and even raise the dead.

  33. The Spirit was there when Christ went to the cross.

  34. And it was the power of the Holy Spirit which raised Christ from the dead

  35. and seated Him in the heavenly places, Ephesians 1.20.

  36. And in the early church, in Acts chapter 2, which Kevin spoke about last Sunday,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  37. the followers of Jesus were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in different tongues.

  38. This is the point.

  39. Throughout Scripture, the Holy Spirit was there, creating order out of chaos,

  40. filling God's people with superhuman, unimaginable power.

  41. And the Spirit was there as the helper of Jesus Christ.

  42. And when Jesus went into heaven, when He ascended into heaven,

  43. Jesus gave the church, that's us, that includes Watermark,

  44. the Holy Spirit as our helper to be with us always.

  45. So today, if you are a follower of Jesus,

  46. and the Holy Spirit dwells or lives in you,

  47. Romans 8.9,

  48. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit.

  49. If in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you,

  50. anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.

  51. Ephesians 1.13,

  52. When you heard the word of truth,

  53. the gospel of your salvation,

  54. and believed in Him,

  55. you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

  56. Let me say it again.

  57. If you are a Christian, if you are a follower of Christ,

  58. the Holy Spirit lives in you,

  59. and therefore, His power

  60. is available to you.

  61. Ephesians 3.16,

  62. According to the riches of His glory,

  63. may He grant you to be strengthened with power

  64. in your inner being.

  65. The Holy Spirit lives in you,

  66. and His power is available to you.

  67. So, going to our first question,

  68. which we've been discussing,

  69. why do we need to depend on the Holy Spirit

  70. and His power to live life as a Christian?

  71. Can't we just read the Bible,

  72. go to CG,

  73. go to Sunday service?

  74. Why do we need to be strengthened with the Spirit's power?

  75. Well, at Watermark,

  76. we often say that we need the gospel

  77. to go from our heads into our hearts.

  78. Of course, this doesn't mean that we switch off our brains

  79. and we only care about feelings and emotions.

  80. Far from it.

  81. One hundred percent,

  82. we need to study the Word of God,

  83. understand sound doctrine,

  84. and put it into practice.

  85. But maybe you can relate to this.

  86. Do you sometimes feel

  87. that your relationship with God

  88. is a bit dry or lifeless?

  89. You read God's Word,

  90. you go to church,

  91. but God's love is not really real in your life,

  92. in your heart.

  93. Or do you struggle to apply the gospel

  94. in everyday life,

  95. especially when life throws you a curveball?

  96. A relationship breaks down,

  97. your career takes a hit.

  98. You know God's Word says trust Him,

  99. but in that moment,

  100. you find yourself doubting.

  101. Or do you find yourself

  102. unable to tackle the sin in your life?

  103. You know that sin destroys,

  104. that's what God's Word says,

  105. but you can't control your thoughts

  106. or your actions.

  107. You know Christ's calling is higher,

  108. but on the scoreboard,

  109. sin is winning.

  110. Can anyone relate to this?

  111. Or is it just me

  112. that experiences these things?

  113. See, on our own strength,

  114. the day-to-day Christian life

  115. can be difficult,

  116. perhaps even impossible.

  117. It's difficult to live out the gospel

  118. in everyday life.

  119. But the wonderful news,

  120. dear brothers and sisters,

  121. in Christ,

  122. is that by His grace and kindness,

  123. God has given all of us

  124. a helper,

  125. the Holy Spirit.

  126. He's been given to you

  127. to be with you forever,

  128. John 14.

  129. And by His power,

  130. the Holy Spirit enlightens

  131. the eyes of our hearts

  132. to see the beauty of Christ.

  133. It makes the gospel come alive.

  134. The Holy Spirit opens the eyes

  135. of our hearts

  136. to see the beauty of Christ.

  137. the Holy Spirit causes us

  138. to be rooted and grounded

  139. in the love of Christ

  140. and to understand

  141. the breadth and length

  142. and height and depth

  143. of Christ's undying love.

  144. In short,

  145. the Holy Spirit glorifies

  146. and magnifies Christ

  147. in our hearts.

  148. John 16, 14.

  149. When the Spirit of truth comes,

  150. the Holy Spirit,

  151. He will guide you

  152. into all truth,

  153. for He will not speak

  154. on His own authority,

  155. but whatever He hears,

  156. He will speak.

  157. He will glorify me.

  158. This is not just

  159. knowledge of Christ.

  160. It's not just theology.

  161. It's also a revelation

  162. in our hearts.

  163. It's doctrine

  164. and it's power.

  165. The Spirit magnifies

  166. Jesus up here

  167. and also down here

  168. in our hearts.

  169. And so we need the Spirit

  170. to live the gospel

  171. in everyday life.

  172. Here's the second reason

  173. which means

  174. was speaking of us

  175. why we need the Spirit

  176. in our lives,

  177. why we depend on the Spirit.

  178. As Neil mentioned,

  179. it's a really difficult mission

  180. that we have

  181. to evangelize,

  182. to share the gospel

  183. with people.

  184. It's mission impossible,

  185. you could say.

  186. In our own strength,

  187. with our own words.

  188. How are we supposed

  189. to convince someone

  190. to follow Jesus?

  191. We need to depend

  192. on the Spirit's power.

  193. It is a person

  194. of the Holy Spirit

  195. who strengthens us

  196. with power

  197. to have the courage

  198. to even approach someone.

  199. It's the Spirit

  200. of Christ

  201. who gives us

  202. the words to say

  203. to our friend

  204. when we're sharing

  205. the gospel.

  206. And it's the Holy Spirit

  207. who's the one

  208. who actually transforms

  209. someone's heart,

  210. opens the eyes

  211. of that person's heart

  212. to have saving faith

  213. in Christ.

  214. And so we desperately

  215. need to depend

  216. on the Holy Spirit

  217. to empower us

  218. to live out the gospel

  219. with joy and fullness

  220. and also

  221. to live out the calling

  222. for mission.

  223. So now our second question.

  224. What are the markers

  225. of a Spirit-dependent life?

  226. Kev described

  227. what a Spirit-filled church

  228. looks like last Sunday.

  229. If you missed his sermon,

  230. go back online

  231. and listen to it.

  232. But today I'll try

  233. to give a few examples

  234. and illustrations

  235. of what a Spirit-dependent person

  236. or life looks like.

  237. Four things.

  238. Number one,

  239. it looks like someone

  240. who has an active prayer life.

  241. Simon will talk about prayer

  242. in a moment,

  243. but just briefly,

  244. someone who is dependent

  245. on the Holy Spirit,

  246. whenever they face a challenge,

  247. their first reaction

  248. is not,

  249. how do I fix this

  250. or what should I do?

  251. Their first reaction

  252. is prayer.

  253. Seek God.

  254. Seek God's discernment.

  255. Seek God's guidance

  256. and seek His healing.

  257. I think Sherman Wong

  258. is someone

  259. who lives by this.

  260. Sherman,

  261. where are you?

  262. Sherman Wong?

  263. Learn about prayer?

  264. Go to Sherman Wong.

  265. Whatever challenge

  266. comes her way,

  267. a family matter

  268. or a church administrative matter,

  269. i.e. the venue search,

  270. Sherman's first reaction

  271. isn't,

  272. let's strategize,

  273. let's do this,

  274. let's do this.

  275. Her first reaction is,

  276. prayer,

  277. prayer, prayer.

  278. Let's seek God in prayer.

  279. Speaking of prayer,

  280. through prayer,

  281. the Holy Spirit heals

  282. in supernatural ways.

  283. I'll share my own testimony

  284. about this.

  285. When I was 14 years old,

  286. I had a really terrible

  287. tennis injury

  288. in my right arm.

  289. And one day,

  290. I was home with my mother

  291. and brother

  292. and they both prayed for me.

  293. My brother was nine years old

  294. at the time.

  295. The prayer was simple,

  296. one minute.

  297. But as all our eyes were closed

  298. and we said amen,

  299. my arm shook.

  300. And then we're all wondering,

  301. what was that?

  302. Oscar,

  303. was that you?

  304. Was that you, Justin?

  305. Was that you, Mom?

  306. Who shook Oscar's arm?

  307. It wasn't any of us.

  308. The Holy Spirit healed my arm.

  309. I am a thousand percent

  310. positive about that.

  311. By His grace and mercy,

  312. I don't even know why.

  313. The Holy Spirit healed me that day.

  314. Being home with me

  315. dependent means having

  316. an active prayer life

  317. in everything and anything,

  318. big and small,

  319. because God's Spirit works

  320. powerfully through prayer.

  321. Number two,

  322. looks like someone who is growing

  323. in the fruits of the Spirit.

  324. CK mentioned this just now.

  325. Good job, CK.

  326. Well done.

  327. The fruits of the Spirit,

  328. love, joy, peace, patience,

  329. kindness, goodness,

  330. faithfulness,

  331. gentleness,

  332. self-control.

  333. These are collective

  334. baskets of fruit.

  335. They're not just,

  336. we don't just have

  337. one of these fruits.

  338. God calls us to have

  339. all of them.

  340. And so someone who is

  341. dependent on the Spirit

  342. is growing in the fruits

  343. of the Spirit

  344. in all of them.

  345. And this is very apparent

  346. in how we relate

  347. to each other.

  348. When relational tension

  349. comes our way,

  350. which it always does,

  351. and we are,

  352. naturally,

  353. we want to

  354. fight back.

  355. Instead of defensiveness

  356. and aggression,

  357. we think the best

  358. of others.

  359. Instead of biting back,

  360. we show grace.

  361. Where's my wife, Celeste?

  362. I want to talk about her

  363. right now.

  364. Nice.

  365. Don't try to hide.

  366. I'm talking about you

  367. right now.

  368. If you know my wife, Celeste,

  369. you know that she's

  370. naturally very intelligent,

  371. but also very...

  372. What's the word?

  373. Forthright?

  374. Blunt?

  375. CK knows.

  376. You can ask CK.

  377. If you ask her

  378. her view on something,

  379. she'll tell you as it is.

  380. She doesn't mince words.

  381. Celeste and I have been

  382. married for 10 plus years.

  383. Sorry, 9 plus years.

  384. Almost 10.

  385. Did I write?

  386. And I dare say

  387. I have the best marriage

  388. of anyone I know.

  389. But we still fight.

  390. We still have conflict.

  391. But over the years,

  392. as I've seen

  393. God's spirit work

  394. in Celeste's heart,

  395. as her love of Christ

  396. has grown,

  397. I've seen a softening

  398. of her heart.

  399. When we have conflict,

  400. which we do often,

  401. instead of her

  402. holding bitterness

  403. and resentment towards me,

  404. when I have hurt her

  405. with my words or actions,

  406. I see a softening,

  407. I see a kindness,

  408. I see a grace,

  409. I see forgiveness.

  410. You see,

  411. those who are growing

  412. in Christ

  413. and growing by the Spirit

  414. are marked by

  415. healthy relationships

  416. that are not

  417. conflict-free,

  418. but conflicts

  419. are resolved quickly

  420. through the Spirit's fruit,

  421. patience,

  422. kindness,

  423. gentleness,

  424. among others.

  425. Let's be a people of God

  426. that depend on the Spirit

  427. to grow in the fruits

  428. of the Spirit.

  429. Number three,

  430. looks like someone

  431. who regularly confesses,

  432. repents,

  433. and turns away from sin.

  434. John 16, 8,

  435. when He,

  436. the Holy Spirit,

  437. comes,

  438. He will convict the world

  439. of sin,

  440. righteousness,

  441. and judgment.

  442. The Holy Spirit

  443. is the one

  444. who causes us

  445. to be acutely aware

  446. of our sin

  447. and depravity,

  448. who convicts us

  449. and causes us

  450. to turn away

  451. from sin.

  452. And so,

  453. if we're living

  454. by the Spirit

  455. and dependent on the Spirit,

  456. confession and repentance

  457. doesn't just happen

  458. once every six months.

  459. It's a regular occurrence.

  460. It happens all the time.

  461. And the Holy Spirit

  462. doesn't just convict us

  463. of sin.

  464. He reorients our hearts

  465. to love Christ more

  466. and to hate that sin.

  467. And even those secret,

  468. shameful sins

  469. are no longer there,

  470. no longer there

  471. in our hearts anymore.

  472. Some of you know

  473. that I used to play

  474. high-stakes poker.

  475. I used to play

  476. in underground clubs.

  477. This is many,

  478. many years ago.

  479. Not recently.

  480. Underground clubs.

  481. I used to play

  482. in Macau, etc.

  483. I was addicted to poker.

  484. It wasn't just

  485. a pastime.

  486. It was an addiction

  487. and it was sin.

  488. But in my own life,

  489. as I have,

  490. I guess,

  491. followed Christ more

  492. and loved Him more

  493. and the Spirit

  494. worked in me,

  495. you probably know this as well,

  496. I don't have any interest

  497. in that anymore at all.

  498. I don't have any desire even

  499. or interest

  500. in high-stakes poker.

  501. Desire is gone.

  502. Being dependent

  503. on the Holy Spirit

  504. means we actively

  505. repent and turn away

  506. from sin.

  507. And fourth and final,

  508. it looks like someone

  509. who actively shares

  510. their faith

  511. with those

  512. that don't yet know Jesus.

  513. As Neal discussed,

  514. it's difficult

  515. to share the gospel.

  516. No question about it.

  517. The outcome

  518. is highly uncertain.

  519. Maybe our friend

  520. will think

  521. that we're wacky.

  522. Maybe we'll have

  523. that discussion

  524. and share our faith

  525. and our friend

  526. will disagree

  527. and we'll be disappointed

  528. or embarrassed.

  529. But if we are a people

  530. who are dependent

  531. on the Holy Spirit,

  532. we can be free

  533. and bold

  534. in sharing our faith

  535. because it's the Spirit

  536. who gives us

  537. the courage.

  538. It's the Spirit

  539. who gives us

  540. the very words to say.

  541. And it's the Holy Spirit

  542. who is the one

  543. who controls

  544. that outcome

  545. and impacts

  546. and illuminates

  547. that person's heart.

  548. I think Jeremy Power

  549. is someone

  550. who depends on the Spirit

  551. to share his faith.

  552. Sorry, Jeremy,

  553. I'm going to embarrass you

  554. wherever you are.

  555. Jeremy has been asking

  556. God and His Spirit

  557. to give him more opportunities

  558. to share his faith

  559. in Jesus.

  560. And guess what happened?

  561. Jeremy was with his friend.

  562. I won't mention him,

  563. but Jeremy was with his friend

  564. who he sort of works with

  565. and Jeremy was hanging out

  566. with his friend

  567. and they were, I think,

  568. in a taxi on the way home

  569. and Jeremy felt the Spirit

  570. prompting him

  571. to invite his friend

  572. to church

  573. for his baptism.

  574. And guess what?

  575. That friend came to church.

  576. That friend still comes

  577. to Watermark.

  578. Even now, let's pray

  579. for Jeremy's friend

  580. to know the saving love

  581. of Christ.

  582. So what does it look like

  583. to be dependent

  584. on the Holy Spirit?

  585. It looks like someone

  586. who is active in prayer.

  587. It looks like someone

  588. who is growing

  589. in the fruits

  590. of the Spirit.

  591. It's someone

  592. who continually repents

  593. and turns away from sin.

  594. And number four,

  595. it looks like someone

  596. who is actively

  597. sharing the gospel.

  598. Don't we want to be

  599. a people like this?

  600. Do we?

  601. Don't we want to depend

  602. on the Spirit's power

  603. to do all these things

  604. for God's glory?

  605. Haven't we read

  606. of so many heroes

  607. of the faith

  608. who are regular people,

  609. ordinary people,

  610. empowered by an extraordinary,

  611. supernatural God

  612. and Holy Spirit?

  613. So how do we become?

  614. Third question.

  615. How do we become

  616. a people that depend

  617. on the Holy Spirit?

  618. I'm sure there are

  619. many, many ways.

  620. Here are three suggestions.

  621. Number one,

  622. surrender,

  623. surrender,

  624. surrender.

  625. We all hate uncertainty.

  626. We all hate losing control.

  627. We're hardwired

  628. to reach for control

  629. and grab onto it.

  630. But we cannot

  631. hold onto control

  632. and still say

  633. that we want to depend

  634. on the Holy Spirit.

  635. It doesn't work.

  636. If we are to be a people

  637. who truly depend

  638. on God's Spirit,

  639. we need to surrender

  640. everything.

  641. Not just one little

  642. inch of our heart.

  643. We need to give God

  644. our whole heart.

  645. Especially,

  646. we have to lose

  647. our grip

  648. on those things

  649. that we love most.

  650. Our money,

  651. our relationships,

  652. our kids' future,

  653. our comfort,

  654. our pleasure.

  655. May our prayer be,

  656. Lord,

  657. not my will,

  658. but yours be done.

  659. And may our prayer be,

  660. if it is your will,

  661. Lord,

  662. I will follow you.

  663. I will do this or that.

  664. Surrender, surrender, surrender.

  665. Number two,

  666. pray for the Spirit's power.

  667. How can the gospel

  668. get into our hearts

  669. if we don't pray for it?

  670. Get on our knees.

  671. Let's petition God

  672. and His Spirit

  673. to open the eyes

  674. of our hearts

  675. to see our sin

  676. and see the beauty

  677. of Christ.

  678. Let's also pray

  679. with faith

  680. every day

  681. in daily life

  682. and daily circumstances

  683. for the Spirit's power.

  684. When someone hurts you

  685. and you're tempted

  686. to bite back

  687. in that moment,

  688. Holy Spirit,

  689. please,

  690. help me to hold my tongue.

  691. When your kids

  692. are driving you crazy

  693. and you want to just explode,

  694. anyone been there?

  695. Just me,

  696. okay,

  697. just me.

  698. Spirit,

  699. please give me the patience

  700. and gentleness

  701. to love my children

  702. well right now.

  703. When you're with

  704. a non-Christian friend

  705. and you're thinking,

  706. maybe God is calling me

  707. to share my faith,

  708. but I really don't want to

  709. because I'm freaked out.

  710. Pray,

  711. God,

  712. please,

  713. by your Spirit,

  714. give me the courage,

  715. give me the boldness,

  716. give me the faith,

  717. give me the words

  718. to say,

  719. to share your love

  720. to my friend

  721. because they desperately

  722. need to know

  723. who you are.

  724. You see,

  725. the Spirit works

  726. in supernatural physical ways

  727. as I have shared

  728. with my arm,

  729. but the Spirit equally works

  730. in supernatural heart ways,

  731. transforming the human heart

  732. to become more like Christ

  733. as we depend on Him.

  734. And third,

  735. be sensitive

  736. to the Spirit's leading.

  737. The Holy Spirit

  738. is our helper,

  739. John 14.

  740. He gives us

  741. godly discernment,

  742. He speaks to us,

  743. sometimes in a clear voice,

  744. sometimes in a prompting

  745. or a sense.

  746. Many of you know

  747. that I left

  748. the corporate finance world

  749. about a year ago

  750. where I was there

  751. for 20 plus years.

  752. At first,

  753. I was pushed out,

  754. but then when I actually

  755. got another job

  756. to go back,

  757. I rejected that job.

  758. You may wonder,

  759. how does someone

  760. in high finance

  761. suddenly leave

  762. his career behind

  763. at such a young age?

  764. I am young.

  765. I am young.

  766. I'm too young

  767. to retire.

  768. I'll never retire.

  769. It's been a journey

  770. of walking with God

  771. for me.

  772. Daily praying

  773. of prayer,

  774. of surrender

  775. for my career,

  776. for my work,

  777. Lord.

  778. I want to give it to you.

  779. Please, God,

  780. how do I honor you

  781. with my work?

  782. Whatever that means.

  783. If you want me

  784. to stay in finance,

  785. I'll stay.

  786. If you want me to go

  787. and do something else,

  788. Lord,

  789. I will follow you.

  790. Make your plan

  791. known to me, Lord.

  792. Spirit, guide me.

  793. These have been my prayers

  794. over actually many years.

  795. And so the time came

  796. to make that decision.

  797. as I continued

  798. to pray,

  799. I felt the Spirit

  800. leading me

  801. not to go back.

  802. I wanted to honor God

  803. and I wanted to obey

  804. the Spirit

  805. and it was very clear

  806. to me.

  807. I lost the desire

  808. to go back

  809. into that field.

  810. Okay.

  811. So,

  812. how do we become

  813. a people dependent

  814. on the Holy Spirit?

  815. I have three suggestions.

  816. Surrender,

  817. surrender,

  818. surrender.

  819. pray for the Spirit's power

  820. and be sensitive

  821. to the Spirit's leading.

  822. So,

  823. to close,

  824. if we are to truly

  825. be a people

  826. who experience

  827. the love of Christ,

  828. if we are to be

  829. a people

  830. who truly love

  831. Christ deeply

  832. and if we are

  833. to honor God

  834. in His mission

  835. to share

  836. the gospel,

  837. we must,

  838. we must,

  839. we must

  840. be wholly dependent

  841. on God's Spirit

  842. for His power

  843. so that we can do

  844. all things

  845. for the glory of God.

  846. There's one

  847. personal reflection there

  848. that I wrote

  849. in your sheet.

  850. How can we grow?

  851. How can we grow?

  852. How can you,

  853. in particular,

  854. grow in dependence

  855. on the Holy Spirit?

  856. What specific action

  857. do you think God

  858. is calling you to do

  859. to grow in your dependence

  860. on the Spirit?

  861. Let's just spend

  862. the next five or so minutes

  863. individually

  864. doing some personal

  865. reflection,

  866. perhaps prayer

  867. as well

  868. and then

  869. I'll pass it on

  870. to,

  871. I think,

  872. Cyberdem

  873. to speak on

  874. faithness.

  875. Thank you.
