  1. And this is God's holy word.

  2. Psalm 122, a song of ascents of David.

  3. I was glad when they said to me,

  4. Let us go to the house of the Lord.

  5. Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.

  6. Jerusalem, built as a city that is bound firmly together,

  7. to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord,

  8. as was decreed for Israel to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

  9. There thrones for judgment were set, the thrones of the house of David.

  10. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

  11. May they be secure who love you.

  12. Peace be within your walls and security within your towers.

  13. For my brothers and companions' sake, I will say,

  14. Peace be within you.

  15. And for the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good.

  16. This is God's word. Let us pray.

  17. Lord, we ask now that you would help us to focus on your word

  18. that we would receive from you tonight,

  19. that you would take away the burdens, the distractions

  20. that are creating barriers now in our heart and our minds

  21. to looking at this passage you've written to us.

  22. We recognize that though this was written in an ancient time,

  23. in an ancient hand by David himself,

  24. that you have written this in your providence for us too.

  25. And so we come now and ask that you would help us to believe that and see it.

  26. And we pray it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  27. There are 15 Psalms of Ascent.

  28. The Psalms of Ascent are a whole group of Psalms

  29. from Psalm 120 to Psalm 134.

  30. So this is the second of them.

  31. Psalm 121 is the first.

  32. And Psalm, excuse me, I should say, this is the third of them.

  33. And the reason they're called the Psalms of Ascent is that three times a year

  34. for Israelites that believed in the Lord,

  35. they are called to come to Jerusalem if they're able for feasts.

  36. And so when you would travel as an Israelite in the ancient world to Jerusalem

  37. three times a year, that was a pilgrimage.

  38. You were a pilgrim on a journey.

  39. And the Psalms of Ascent are songs you would sing along the way,

  40. songs you would sing at different points throughout the journey.

  41. And so we don't do this as much anymore.

  42. I guess we wear headphones or AirPods throughout the city.

  43. And maybe every once in a while we might sing out loud while we're walking around.

  44. But in the ancient world, people would always sing

  45. while they're walking and traveling places.

  46. If you've been to the military tattoo across the street,

  47. you know that the tattoo is framed around that,

  48. that there would be a band that would go with the army as they travel

  49. and people would sing songs.

  50. And so the Psalms of Ascent are the songs that Israel,

  51. the Israelites sang along the journey to Jerusalem three times a year for the pilgrimage.

  52. And those three feasts were Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Booths.

  53. And so you would travel to Jerusalem for Passover to remember the Exodus story.

  54. You would travel to Jerusalem for Pentecost to remember the giving of the law

  55. on Mount Sinai, the Ten Commandments.

  56. And you would travel for the Feast of Booths as a memorial for the time in the wilderness,

  57. living in tents, living without a home.

  58. And so in each of these, you would go,

  59. you would make a sacrifice to the Lord in Jerusalem at the temple,

  60. and you would bring your very best, the best of your grain,

  61. the best of your sheep, your lambs.

  62. And really, it was all about remembering what God had done for Israel historically

  63. and what God had done for you in your life.

  64. And you come to these and you say,

  65. how can we, as New Testament Christians, sing the Psalms of Ascent?

  66. What does that mean for us?

  67. We don't go to pilgrimage to Jerusalem three times a year, nor should we.

  68. What does it mean as a person on this side of the gospel

  69. to sing a psalm like we just sang, Psalm 122?

  70. And the reason we can sing them is because they're God's Word.

  71. That's a good start.

  72. But also because in Hebrews chapter 3 and 4,

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  73. the writer to the Hebrews says that if you are a Christian tonight,

  74. you too are a pilgrim.

  75. It's the same language.

  76. You are an exile.

  77. You are a wanderer.

  78. You are wandering through the wilderness of this life towards a city, a Jerusalem.

  79. And so these psalms, the Psalms of Ascent,

  80. become new songs for us in a different way as New Testament pilgrims.

  81. And the theme, I think, here is the very first, the third word, verse 1,

  82. David arrives in Jerusalem and he says, I was glad.

  83. So the question tonight is, what makes for true gladness?

  84. What makes for true gladness?

  85. And where is that to be found secondly?

  86. And then finally, how do you seek that?

  87. And so that's how we can sing the Psalms.

  88. What makes us glad?

  89. So let's think about that together.

  90. First, what makes for true gladness?

  91. Verse 1 and 2 is the focus here.

  92. Two things that will help us here.

  93. A couple more things to know about the Psalms of Ascent.

  94. The first is that by tradition outside the biblical text,

  95. we know that the Israelites often,

  96. when they went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem three times a year,

  97. they would often refuse to sleep in any built structures.

  98. So if you were coming towards Jerusalem and you found a house,

  99. you found a friend that lived a little bit closer to Jerusalem than you,

  100. you wouldn't go inside their house and sleep.

  101. You would actually sleep outside the house in a tent or just on the ground underneath the stars.

  102. And that's because you were there to relive the Exodus story.

  103. You were there to relive the time in the wilderness.

  104. You were there to relive the struggle.

  105. So it was not meant to be easy.

  106. It was supposed to be hard.

  107. You don't sleep in a comfortable bed.

  108. You sleep out under the stars.

  109. And then the second thing to know then,

  110. to really make sense of Psalm 122,

  111. is Psalm 122 comes after Psalm 121, right?

  112. I think that's a fact.

  113. And that's important because the Psalms of Ascent,

  114. they build on each other.

  115. They grow.

  116. And you remember, probably if you've been in the church at all for any time,

  117. that Psalm 121 has that very famous line where the psalmist says,

  118. I lift my eyes to the hills, and I ask, where does my help come from?

  119. And then it's antiphonal, meaning a choir or somebody else sings back to him and says,

  120. my help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

  121. He keeps me.

  122. Now, why in Psalm 121 did they say that?

  123. And it's because you're on the pilgrimage, and this is not,

  124. oh, I lift my eyes to the hills, and I notice God.

  125. I look at Arthur's seat.

  126. I look at the best of the highlands, and I say, look at God.

  127. He's amazing.

  128. Look at how great the creation is.

  129. That is not what it's talking about, though that's true.

  130. When Psalm 121 says, I lift my eyes to the hills and ask,

  131. where does my help come from?

  132. It is because they're afraid.

  133. They're sleeping outside.

  134. The hills in the ancient world are a place of danger, not safety.

  135. It's the place where you would get robbed, where bandits tried to hide out for you.

  136. It was the place, often in the Old Testament, of the false gods,

  137. where Asherah poles and Baal worship sites were set up all throughout the mountains.

  138. And so they say, I lift my eyes to the hills outside of Jerusalem,

  139. and I realize, if I'm going to make it from my home to Jerusalem,

  140. where's my help going to come from?

  141. So that's Psalm 121.

  142. It's about the journey, and will my keeper keep me all the way to Jerusalem?

  143. But then you come to Psalm 122, and the point is,

  144. I was glad when they said, let's go to the house of the Lord.

  145. And then verse 2, here it is.

  146. Our feet are now standing in the gates of Jerusalem.

  147. So you see that they've done the travel, Psalm 121, Psalm 122.

  148. My feet are now, have arrived inside the gates of Jerusalem.

  149. That's what David's saying.

  150. I'm so thankful to have finally made it.

  151. And there's a sense here that the psalmist is saying the pilgrimage,

  152. the pilgrimage includes a sense of homelessness,

  153. a sense of wandering, a sense of,

  154. I'm on the journey, and I'm not yet home.

  155. But then in verse 2 of Psalm 122,

  156. but now when I come to Jerusalem, here I am.

  157. I'm standing here.

  158. I finally made it to where God has sent me, where I want to be.

  159. And that tells us that in verse 1,

  160. boy, this makes sense, verse 1.

  161. Because in verse 1, what does David say?

  162. I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the,

  163. and we should expect there it should be temple of the Lord.

  164. But that's not what he says.

  165. I was glad when they said, let us go into the house,

  166. or the Hebrew word is home, of the Lord.

  167. And what David is saying is, when I go into Jerusalem,

  168. and I get through the wilderness journey, the pilgrimage,

  169. which is full of dangers and toils and snares,

  170. and I finally am standing in the gates,

  171. and I see the temple, he says, I just want to be home.

  172. And in this psalm, he says that home is being in the home of the Lord,

  173. where God dwells in the midst of the city of God in Jerusalem.

  174. And that means that the point of this passage is simple,

  175. and it's to just say this,

  176. real home for the pilgrim believer is wherever God makes his home.

  177. And that's what David's saying.

  178. He's saying, I knew finally that no matter where I come from,

  179. no matter where you come from,

  180. that you will never be fully home

  181. until you arrive at the place that God has made home,

  182. where God calls home.

  183. I, every single person in this room knows what it feels like

  184. to come off the back of a long work day and come home.

  185. And everybody in here knows what it's like

  186. to come off the back of a long trip and come home.

  187. And it doesn't matter how good a holiday is.

  188. There are times on the best holiday you've ever had

  189. where you think, I just want to be at home,

  190. and I just want to get back to normal,

  191. and I just want to get back to my routine.

  192. And the relief that that is.

  193. I can say, I did it a month ago,

  194. that when you take five kids 32,000 feet in the air

  195. across the Atlantic,

  196. no matter where you land,

  197. whether it's New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia,

  198. it doesn't matter, Edinburgh, London,

  199. wherever you land, you think, this is now my home.

  200. I just want to be off the plane.

  201. I just, you think, this is such relief.

  202. We all have that sense, you know,

  203. the existential reality of being relieved

  204. to not be traveling anymore.

  205. And that's what's being talked about here,

  206. but it's being, in other words,

  207. that feeling we get when we finally drop our bags

  208. or we come home from work after the worst day.

  209. And think, I'm finally home.

  210. That sense of existential relief

  211. is the tiniest, tiniest little shadow

  212. of what's being talked about here.

  213. And we can all say,

  214. there is a home that I've yet to experience

  215. that I really long for,

  216. and this passage is telling us

  217. that that home is wherever God makes home.

  218. And that will never really be home

  219. until we get there.

  220. Now, that's why I think,

  221. in verse one,

  222. David uses the word glad.

  223. And glad,

  224. the word glad here

  225. is not really

  226. the sense of

  227. the modern word happy,

  228. which is sort of a cheap word,

  229. and we use that

  230. in a really thin way.

  231. But the word glad here

  232. has a real thickness to it

  233. and a depth to it

  234. in the Hebrew text.

  235. And I know this is a very old word,

  236. but it corresponds

  237. a little bit more

  238. to something like mirth

  239. or to be merry.

  240. You know,

  241. we stop saying Merry Christmas,

  242. but that's the word merry,

  243. mirth.

  244. It's this real deep sense of gladness,

  245. what the New Testament calls joy.

  246. Joy is what's being talked about here.

  247. One of the favorite moments,

  248. one of my favorite moments

  249. in The Lord of the Rings

  250. is when,

  251. in the third book,

  252. The Return of the King,

  253. Gandalf and Pippin

  254. are facing a great battle.

  255. And Pippin,

  256. the hobbit,

  257. looks up at Gandalf's face

  258. in the midst of sorrow and trouble,

  259. and it says,

  260. in the wizard's face,

  261. Pippin saw at first

  262. only lines of care and sorrow,

  263. though as he looked more intently,

  264. he perceived that under all

  265. there was a great joy,

  266. a fountain of mirth,

  267. enough to set a kingdom laughing,

  268. were it to gush forth.

  269. And, you know,

  270. this life we live is sad,

  271. it's hard.

  272. Life in this earthly existence

  273. we have so far

  274. gives you a lot of wrinkles

  275. and a lot of bags under the eyes,

  276. like Gandalf had

  277. when he was battling

  278. in Minas Tirith.

  279. But Pippin looked up at Gandalf

  280. and said,

  281. underneath it all,

  282. I could see

  283. that there was a joy,

  284. a fountain of mirth,

  285. that would burst forth

  286. and make us all laugh

  287. if it was just to let it go.

  288. And here,

  289. we're being told,

  290. David is saying

  291. something like,

  292. when I step into the place

  293. that God has made home

  294. in this earth for now,

  295. it creates for me

  296. a fountain of mirth

  297. like nowhere else.

  298. What makes glad?

  299. Being home with God

  300. makes glad.

  301. It's the only thing

  302. that can bring

  303. absolute gladness

  304. to your life.

  305. Secondly,

  306. where is this home exactly?

  307. Where is this true gladness

  308. to be found spatially?

  309. Now, the psalm turns

  310. from verse 1 and verse 2

  311. that the home

  312. where the Lord,

  313. the temple,

  314. that's what makes me glad.

  315. But then,

  316. he does something

  317. a little bit unexpected

  318. and he turns

  319. not just to talk about,

  320. you expect him,

  321. I think, David,

  322. to talk about the temple

  323. and the home of God

  324. and say,

  325. now I get to go

  326. into the temple

  327. and be in God's presence.

  328. But instead,

  329. in verse 3 and following,

  330. he turns and he starts

  331. talking about

  332. the city as a whole.

  333. He talks about

  334. the city of God

  335. in the Old Testament,

  336. Jerusalem.

  337. And just look at

  338. some of the things

  339. he said.

  340. He says in verse 3,

  341. Oh, Jerusalem,

  342. built as a city,

  343. bound firmly together,

  344. to which the tribes

  345. go up.

  346. And one of the things

  347. he's doing here

  348. is he's actually

  349. standing in the gates.

  350. The temple is out

  351. in front of his vision

  352. above him.

  353. But David is literally

  354. looking around

  355. and saying,

  356. wow,

  357. look at the architecture

  358. of this great city,

  359. how firmly

  360. it's been put together.

  361. And you can go through

  362. and see how he talks

  363. about this beauty

  364. of the place

  365. that he loves to be,

  366. the city he loves to be.

  367. And he goes on

  368. from there

  369. and says in verse 4,

  370. this is the meeting place

  371. of all the tribes

  372. of Israel.

  373. So he's thinking there

  374. of the fact that

  375. when you get to Jerusalem,

  376. the city that makes glad

  377. and the home of God

  378. that makes glad,

  379. you know,

  380. it's like those moments

  381. where you have

  382. a reunion with family

  383. that you've not seen

  384. in a long, long time.

  385. We got to experience

  386. this summer.

  387. We had,

  388. I had a nephew

  389. that I'd never met before,

  390. a niece I'd never met before.

  391. And this summer,

  392. I went and we met them

  393. and all the cousins

  394. are together.

  395. And you think,

  396. boy,

  397. I love being here.

  398. How being here

  399. makes me glad

  400. because all the peoples

  401. are gathered.

  402. So you can imagine

  403. that when you come

  404. to pilgrimage every year,

  405. as an ancient Israelite,

  406. you are going to see

  407. family members

  408. that lived on the other

  409. side of Israel

  410. that you had not seen before.

  411. You're going to see people

  412. that you said,

  413. oh,

  414. I remember you

  415. from the last Passover

  416. and that you had met

  417. and you come

  418. and you greet.

  419. And you see,

  420. in other words,

  421. David is turning

  422. and saying,

  423. true home

  424. is being wherever

  425. God is home.

  426. And true home

  427. is also being

  428. in a physical,

  429. gorgeous,

  430. spatial,

  431. embodied place

  432. where the people

  433. I love are here.

  434. And so David looks around

  435. and he notices that.

  436. And this is really

  437. an ode to true home,

  438. an ode to that city

  439. here.

  440. And in verse 5,

  441. the last thing he says

  442. about it is he says,

  443. there in that city

  444. the thrones of judgment

  445. are set,

  446. the throne of the house

  447. of David.

  448. So he looks up

  449. and he says,

  450. this is a place

  451. where at the center

  452. is the throne

  453. of the house of David,

  454. the throne

  455. that represents

  456. righteousness

  457. and justice

  458. and safety

  459. and peace

  460. and that can never

  461. be thwarted,

  462. that is forever

  463. by covenant of God.

  464. And he's resting there

  465. in the fact that

  466. this place is a place

  467. of justice

  468. and peace

  469. of rest,

  470. of safety

  471. after coming out

  472. of the hills.

  473. Now look,

  474. we all know tonight,

  475. if you are a Christian

  476. tonight,

  477. if you've read

  478. much of the Bible

  479. tonight,

  480. you know that

  481. David is here

  482. talking about Jerusalem

  483. yet this Jerusalem

  484. is not ultimately

  485. the city David

  486. is talking about.

  487. David here,

  488. he knows

  489. something more

  490. and boy,

  491. do we know more

  492. and that's

  493. that there

  494. is nothing

  495. but a shadow

  496. of the true

  497. city of God

  498. that's being reflected

  499. on in the psalm.

  500. And that's even

  501. in the psalm itself,

  502. you know,

  503. verse 6 to 8,

  504. he turns to

  505. other people

  506. that are traveling

  507. with him

  508. and he says,

  509. pray for the peace

  510. of Jerusalem,

  511. may it be secure,

  512. those who love you,

  513. peace within your walls.

  514. The reason that

  515. David has to say that

  516. is because there

  517. has not been peace

  518. in Jerusalem

  519. and we know

  520. as you read

  521. the rest of the Bible

  522. there's not going

  523. to be peace

  524. in Jerusalem

  525. and this city,

  526. these walls,

  527. this temple

  528. is going to be destroyed

  529. and it is not

  530. a lasting city,

  531. it's an earthly city

  532. where God has chosen

  533. to make a temple

  534. a temporary home

  535. and you could,

  536. we won't do it,

  537. but you could go through

  538. the rest of the Old Testament

  539. and look at the prophecies

  540. about the city,

  541. the true city

  542. that this Jerusalem

  543. points to.

  544. I'll just mention

  545. a couple of them

  546. for you.

  547. Ezekiel 36,

  548. Ezekiel 36 says,

  549. on that day,

  550. the day of the city

  551. of God,

  552. the land laid waste,

  553. Jerusalem laid waste,

  554. will become

  555. the Garden of Eden.

  556. And so Ezekiel says,

  557. the true city

  558. that you should look for

  559. is a city

  560. that looks like

  561. the very Garden of Eden

  562. and in the Garden of Eden

  563. it's a place

  564. of peace,

  565. of safety,

  566. of rest,

  567. but one of the most

  568. distinctive features

  569. is that when you

  570. traveled to Jerusalem

  571. in Psalm 122,

  572. and you got to the

  573. home of God,

  574. the temple,

  575. there's a veil,

  576. there's a curtain,

  577. and there is only

  578. one person

  579. in the whole city

  580. that can pass

  581. through that curtain

  582. and be in the presence

  583. of the living God

  584. on earth,

  585. only one.

  586. But that's not what

  587. the Garden of Eden's like.

  588. In the Garden of Eden,

  589. Adam and Eve,

  590. the promise is that

  591. you can walk

  592. hand in hand

  593. with God

  594. as a friend.

  595. You can know him

  596. so intimately,

  597. so securely.

  598. And so we see

  599. that this is not

  600. the city,

  601. that this is the city,

  602. but it's not the city,

  603. and that's why

  604. I think one of the ways

  605. to express this

  606. is that every,

  607. there's a hint of this

  608. in the human experience

  609. of nostalgia.

  610. Nostalgia

  611. sometimes really gets us.

  612. I've had some nostalgia lately.

  613. I got invited

  614. to my 20th class reunion

  615. for the high school

  616. that I graduated from

  617. recently.

  618. I'm not going

  619. to be able to go,

  620. but you know,

  621. you get something like that,

  622. an invitation like that,

  623. and it brings memories

  624. of people that you

  625. don't think about anymore,

  626. you know,

  627. memories of that time

  628. with that person,

  629. and you see the invitation

  630. list and who's coming

  631. and think,

  632. man,

  633. I forgot that that guy

  634. existed,

  635. but we used to be friends.

  636. And there's a nostalgia

  637. that comes with that,

  638. and nostalgia is a really

  639. tricky thing,

  640. a funny thing,

  641. because what nostalgia does

  642. is there's something

  643. beautiful about it,

  644. but it always contains

  645. a lie,

  646. right?

  647. Nostalgia always contains

  648. a lie.

  649. I haven't been back.

  650. I don't know about you.

  651. Most of you will probably

  652. have a little more frequency

  653. in maybe visiting the home

  654. you grew up in

  655. or maybe passing by it

  656. if it's still around.

  657. I haven't seen the home

  658. I grew up in in many years,

  659. but I remember after

  660. about a 15-year hiatus

  661. of seeing the home

  662. I grew up in,

  663. finally being back

  664. in my hometown

  665. and seeing it,

  666. and it was exciting.

  667. You know,

  668. somebody else lives there.

  669. I don't know who they are,

  670. but you kind of stand outside

  671. and you want to walk

  672. on the property,

  673. but then you think,

  674. I shouldn't do that.

  675. I'll get arrested

  676. in America,

  677. maybe,

  678. and, you know,

  679. I have to stay away.

  680. But one of the experiences

  681. I had was to say,

  682. wow,

  683. and yet,

  684. the house was so much smaller

  685. than I remembered,

  686. and I could see

  687. where my window had been,

  688. and I thought,

  689. it doesn't look great,

  690. it needs a facelift,

  691. it needs a little renovation,

  692. but that is what we painted it,

  693. you know,

  694. and the grass is not as green

  695. as you remember,

  696. and the trees are not,

  697. and et cetera,

  698. et cetera,

  699. et cetera,

  700. right?

  701. And you experience nostalgia,

  702. and there's something

  703. of a lie in it,

  704. and that's because

  705. no matter how much

  706. we find a place

  707. in this earthly life,

  708. in these earthly cities

  709. that we call home,

  710. there is always

  711. a reality

  712. that there is a lack in it,

  713. and you go back

  714. to your home

  715. from childhood,

  716. and you say,

  717. this was good,

  718. but it's not actually

  719. filling the ultimate need

  720. that I'm looking for.

  721. There's a word in German

  722. that some of the German

  723. philosophers use,

  724. famously Freud

  725. talked about this,

  726. or someone like Heidegger

  727. who's less well known,

  728. and Unheimlichkeit,

  729. and it's hard to translate,

  730. but it's got this sense

  731. of un-home likeness,

  732. and it's a reference

  733. to that feeling

  734. that we sometimes get

  735. where we are at the place

  736. we're supposed to be,

  737. but there's a strange sense

  738. where we're also

  739. not supposed to be here

  740. at the very same time,

  741. that we're not yet home,

  742. that it's not fulfilling

  743. all of our desires,

  744. that it,

  745. that's life in this world,

  746. that's what they said,

  747. and one of my favorite books

  748. is C.S. Lewis' novel,

  749. Till We Have Faces,

  750. and this is the words

  751. he puts in one

  752. of the characters' mouth,

  753. Psyche,

  754. about coming home,

  755. and I think he's got

  756. the Psalms of Ascent

  757. maybe in mind here.

  758. The sweetest thing

  759. in all my life,

  760. she says,

  761. has been the longing

  762. to reach the mountain,

  763. to find the place

  764. where all the beauty

  765. came from,

  766. my country,

  767. the place where I ought

  768. to have been born.

  769. Do you think

  770. it all meant nothing,

  771. all the longings,

  772. the longing for home,

  773. for indeed,

  774. it now feels

  775. not like going,

  776. but like going back

  777. to where I belong.

  778. All my life,

  779. the God of the mountain

  780. has been wooing me.

  781. Oh, look up once,

  782. at least before the end,

  783. and wish me joy

  784. in these final days.

  785. I am going to my love.

  786. And he's reflecting there

  787. on the fact

  788. of what David's reflecting on,

  789. and that's that

  790. there is no earthly city,

  791. no earthly home,

  792. no earthly experience,

  793. no success,

  794. no relationship,

  795. no person,

  796. as good as it all is,

  797. that can be

  798. absolute home for us,

  799. that can fill

  800. the desires of the heart,

  801. that can really,

  802. really fill the gap

  803. deep down

  804. at the bottom

  805. of our soul.

  806. And that's why

  807. 700 years later,

  808. 700 years after this moment,

  809. there was another pilgrim,

  810. and that pilgrim

  811. was coming to Jerusalem

  812. for the feast of Passover,

  813. just like in Psalm 122.

  814. And that pilgrim

  815. stood above

  816. in the hills

  817. outside the city of Jerusalem,

  818. and he looked down

  819. at the city of Jerusalem.

  820. And what did he say?

  821. It says that,

  822. we're told in the Gospels,

  823. Jesus wept for Jerusalem.

  824. And it says,

  825. would that even you,

  826. Jerusalem,

  827. had known on this day

  828. the things that make for peace.

  829. Would you be willing

  830. to receive peace,

  831. but now they're hidden

  832. from your eyes.

  833. And the reason Jesus

  834. was weeping

  835. is because he knew

  836. that just like

  837. every other place,

  838. Jerusalem is a city of man.

  839. It's an earthly place.

  840. And he knew

  841. that when he entered in,

  842. he would not be glad

  843. when he entered the gates.

  844. He would be rejected.

  845. He would suffer.

  846. He would die.

  847. He would be,

  848. in other words,

  849. you know,

  850. we can say the same thing.

  851. It's anachronistic,

  852. but Edinburgh rejected him.

  853. Glasgow rejected him.

  854. Jerusalem rejected him.

  855. Natchez, Mississippi,

  856. where I'm from,

  857. rejected him.

  858. Humanity rejected him

  859. when he came

  860. because no earthly city

  861. could be true home

  862. unless the Son of God

  863. become the builder

  864. and he established a city

  865. whose foundations

  866. come from the Lord.

  867. And that's why tonight

  868. in a minute

  869. we're going to sing

  870. the Charles Wesley hymn

  871. and Can It Be

  872. where it says,

  873. he left his father's home

  874. above so free,

  875. so infinite his grace,

  876. he emptied himself

  877. of all but love

  878. and he bled

  879. for Adam's helpless race

  880. in order to be able

  881. to give us true home again.

  882. And so tonight

  883. we can say that

  884. because Jesus Christ bled,

  885. the veil was torn.

  886. And because the veil was torn,

  887. we really can,

  888. in this earthly pilgrimage

  889. we're experiencing right now,

  890. know that if you're struggling

  891. and saying,

  892. I'm just not satisfied

  893. with where I am,

  894. well, let me say,

  895. that makes sense.

  896. You're not home.

  897. You will not be satisfied

  898. with where you're at,

  899. not fully,

  900. not until God brings you

  901. all the way to the mountain.

  902. And he can do so

  903. because Jesus Christ bled

  904. for Adam's helpless race.

  905. So let me conclude

  906. with this finally,

  907. briefly.

  908. How can you,

  909. in this life right now,

  910. you know,

  911. you say,

  912. well, look,

  913. that's all future.

  914. What am I to do

  915. with this today?

  916. What can you do

  917. with this today?

  918. Let me say two things

  919. as we close.

  920. First,

  921. today,

  922. in order to bring this home

  923. to us right now

  924. in this moment,

  925. in 2025,

  926. in our city,

  927. first,

  928. we have to realize

  929. and recognize

  930. the city of God,

  931. true home,

  932. is not yet.

  933. And what I mean by that

  934. is we've got to grapple

  935. in our hearts

  936. and in our minds

  937. with the objective reality

  938. that the city of God,

  939. first,

  940. is a real destination.

  941. So where do we see

  942. this moment,

  943. Psalm 122,

  944. fully fulfilled?

  945. And that's in Revelation 21,

  946. where Jesus Christ

  947. brings down

  948. the new Jerusalem

  949. to this earth.

  950. and he builds

  951. a physical,

  952. embodied space

  953. where all the tribes

  954. gather with him.

  955. That's true home.

  956. And one of the things

  957. I just want to invite you

  958. to do tonight

  959. is I want to ask you,

  960. is the new Jerusalem,

  961. the city of God,

  962. a real destination

  963. in your heart and mind?

  964. It is real objectively,

  965. but are you grasping

  966. hold of that subjectively?

  967. And we sang tonight

  968. at the beginning

  969. about hope,

  970. and the Bible talks

  971. about hope,

  972. hope in the city

  973. that is to come.

  974. And boy,

  975. that makes all the difference,

  976. the fact of the new Jerusalem,

  977. the reality of it.

  978. C.S. Lewis one more time.

  979. He says,

  980. creatures are not born

  981. with desires

  982. unless satisfaction

  983. for those desires exists.

  984. A baby feels hungry,

  985. well,

  986. there's such a thing as food.

  987. A duckling wants to swim,

  988. well,

  989. there's such a thing as water.

  990. And if I find in myself

  991. a desire

  992. which no experience

  993. in this world

  994. has yet to satisfy,

  995. the most probable explanation

  996. is that I was made

  997. for another world,

  998. another city,

  999. another home.

1000. If none of my earthly pleasures

  1001. satisfy,

  1002. it doesn't prove

1003. that this is all a fraud.

  1004. Instead,

1005. it points me to something

  1006. beyond this earthly city,

  1007. beyond this earthly life.

  1008. So the first thing

  1009. is to say,

1010. the city of God is coming,

  1011. it's real.

1012. Have you let that really

1013. get down into your heart

  1014. and shape your experiences

  1015. in this life,

  1016. your hope,

  1017. your expectations,

  1018. and settle your expectations

1019. for the kind of satisfaction

  1020. you can actually experience

  1021. in the earthly city.

1022. One pastor I came across,

1023. I got this illustration from him,

1024. I thought it was very helpful.

  1025. He says that,

  1026. imagine two men captured

1027. in a raid of their city,

  1028. their city burned,

  1029. their city destroyed,

1030. and these two men are captured,

  1031. they're imprisoned,

  1032. they're thrown into a pit,

1033. and they both saw the city burn,

1034. but the first man believes

1035. that his family's still alive,

1036. and that there are people

1037. out there looking for him,

1038. and the second man is told,

  1039. there is nothing left,

  1040. everyone's dead,

  1041. and they're both given

  1042. a 10-year prison sentence.

1043. How did each of them deal

  1044. with the sentence?

1045. One man is trying every day

1046. to wake up and press on,

  1047. right?

  1048. But the other man

1049. finds himself in a place

  1050. of hopelessness.

  1051. In other words,

  1052. the expectation

1053. of what's on the other side

  1054. means everything

1055. for how you live your life today.

  1056. The expectation

1057. of the city of God to come

  1058. means everything

1059. for how you live your life today,

  1060. and so the expectation

1061. of true home that is to come

  1062. helps us so much

  1063. to simply do this,

1064. it helps us to not make

1065. all the little creaturely things

  1066. in this world

  1067. into the gods

1068. that we think can be to us

  1069. the city of God.

  1070. Expecting that our home

1071. is not yet helps us so much

  1072. prevents us from letting

  1073. all the crummy little

  1074. and sometimes beautiful things

  1075. in this life,

1076. it prevents us from turning them

1077. into the city of God

  1078. in our hearts.

  1079. Lastly,

1080. and we'll finish with this,

1081. not only do we have to know

1082. that the city of God

  1083. is not yet,

1084. but today we've got to know

1085. that the city of God

  1086. is also now.

1087. And what I mean by that

  1088. is very,

1089. at the end of this passage,

  1090. David says,

1091. pray for the peace of Jerusalem,

1092. pray for peace in its walls.

1093. How can a Christian say that?

1094. What do we mean by that today?

1095. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem,

1096. and of course we can pray

  1097. for physical peace

  1098. amongst human beings today

1099. in the midst of conflicts,

  1100. but something more

1101. than that's going on there,

  1102. and that's this,

  1103. that how,

  1104. in other words,

  1105. we could say,

1106. how is the city of God

  1107. present today?

1108. And this is a complicated theology,

1109. but I'll simply say this.

  1110. The city of God

  1111. is present today

  1112. in the fact

  1113. that God's people

  1114. are citizens

1115. of the city of God today.

1116. And so what the church is,

  1117. is when we gather,

  1118. when this group

  1119. gathers together,

  1120. we are a one-hour

  1121. momentary glimpse

1122. of the city of God

  1123. that is to come.

  1124. That's what this means

  1125. when we gather together

  1126. for worship

1127. week in and week out.

  1128. And so,

1129. if you are a member here,

  1130. if you're a member of a church

  1131. in the free church,

1132. you will have taken a vow

  1133. that says,

  1134. do you promise

  1135. to seek the peace

  1136. and prosperity

  1137. of the church?

  1138. And in Psalm 122,

    Psalms 122:7

  1139. verse 7 and 8,

  1140. when it says,

  1141. pray for the peace

  1142. of Jerusalem,

  1143. you can say,

1144. that means to me today,

  1145. pray for the peace

  1146. of the church,

  1147. for its prosperity,

  1148. for its unity,

  1149. for its protection.

1150. And this is the last word.

  1151. Boy, David,

1152. he comes into the city

  1153. of Jerusalem

1154. where God has made his home

  1155. and he said,

1156. it made me so glad

  1157. to be there.

  1158. And he looked around

1159. and he saw his cousins

1160. and he saw the people

  1161. that he hadn't seen

  1162. in a long time

  1163. and it gave him

1164. the biggest amount of joy.

  1165. If there is

  1166. the smallest

  1167. in our hearts tonight,

  1168. the smallest,

1169. a little bit of joy

1170. when you come into church,

1171. a little bit of joy

  1172. and you look around

  1173. and you say,

  1174. the people of God,

  1175. my spiritual cousins,

  1176. brothers and sisters,

  1177. being with God's people

  1178. in God's presence,

  1179. in God's place

  1180. makes me glad.

1181. If there is a little bit

  1182. of that for you,

  1183. how,

  1184. can you imagine

1185. what it is going to be like

  1186. when you step foot

  1187. into the true home,

  1188. the city of God,

  1189. when Revelation 21 happens

1190. and you first enter the city?

  1191. And Ligon Duncan,

1192. he puts it this way,

1193. if God in that moment

  1194. were not holding

1195. the hearts of all his people

  1196. steady,

1197. we would explode with joy.

  1198. Rest tonight

  1199. and be glad

1200. in the midst of a tough life,

  1201. hard life,

  1202. sad life,

  1203. lots of trouble,

1204. with the words of the psalm.

  1205. Let me finish

  1206. with Psalm 87.3,

  1207. a parallel psalm

  1208. and it says this,

  1209. glorious things

  1210. are said of you,

1211. O city of God to come.

  1212. Glorious things

  1213. are said

1214. of the city of God.

  1215. Let's pray.

  1216. Father,

  1217. we ask for hope

  1218. in that reality.

  1219. We want

  1220. to experience

  1221. just a taste tonight

  1222. of the joy

1223. of the city of God

  1224. that is to come.

  1225. And so,

1226. sometimes it can be hard

  1227. to come into church

  1228. on a Sunday night

  1229. and feel joy,

  1230. Lord,

  1231. but that's what we're here for.

  1232. Give us that,

  1233. we ask,

1234. in the midst of trouble

  1235. and sad

1236. and bags under our eyes

  1237. because of hardship.

1238. As we read about earlier,

  1239. we come,

  1240. Lord,

1241. and ask for this gift

  1242. of hope and joy.

  1243. Set our eyes tonight

  1244. on the new Jerusalem

  1245. and on the time

1246. that is ahead of us

  1247. in the city

  1248. that makes glad.

  1249. Lord,

1250. we want to even imagine

1251. what it must be like

1252. to be in a place

  1253. where there is

  1254. no more sadness

  1255. or anxiety,

  1256. no more trouble.

  1257. And that's what

  1258. you promise us,

  1259. Lord,

1260. so give us a taste

  1261. of that

  1262. as we sing

  1263. this classic hymn

  1264. tonight before you

  1265. and Can It Be.

  1266. We want to bring

  1267. these words to you,

  1268. Lord,

  1269. touch our hearts

  1270. to bring these words

  1271. to you,

  1272. Lord,

  1273. and we pray that

  1274. in Jesus' name.

  1275. Amen.
