  1. Okay guys, let's wrap the conversations up. Sorry to cut it short. And let's talk about faith.

  2. Gotta have faith. Alright, I'm not going to see you going.

  3. Okay, full house. So good to see all of you guys.

  4. Here we go. So, Watermark Church, we've just been discussing. What might it look like if we as individuals, if we as a church as a whole, had genuine, strong faith?

  5. As Niels pointed out at the start earlier, as ambassadors for Christ, and as Oscar mentioned, I like that phrase, we have mission impossible in front of us.

  6. We're completely dependent on God. And as Oscar followed, the catalyst he uses for that, the power, is the Holy Spirit.

  7. Moving on from that, if not one of, if not the most important things the Spirit gives us for this dependent mission, is faith.

  8. The Spirit not only implants faith in our hearts, but it also grows our faith, both individually and cooperatively.

  9. We'll spend the next 15 minutes or so looking at what faith is, why we need it, what it may look like to grow in faith.

  10. So, what is faith? In our discussions, we were actually discussing that. It's kind of a vague term often in Christian circles.

  11. The core text we're going to look at is Hebrews chapter 11. We're not going to read the whole chapter, but we're going to look at a few verses.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  12. The very first verse, Hebrews 11 verse 1 says,

    Hebrews 11:1

  13. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

  14. Super clear, right?

  15. The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

  16. It's not irrational. Our faith is not irrational by any means.

  17. But it is an undergirding confidence that what the Bible says is true.

  18. About ourselves, about God, about the world.

  19. Even in the absence of what we would define today as 100% concrete physical evidence.

  20. Let me unpack that a bit.

  21. It might actually help to look at what faith is not.

  22. The Bible actually mentions a few different kinds of faith.

  23. The Pharisees, for an example, have a type of faith.

  24. They believed and had faith in the Old Testament Scriptures.

  25. They lived by it.

  26. But they certainly did not believe that Jesus was the one they pointed to or will fulfill them.

  27. I remember a friend in university, a close friend of mine.

  28. He was a brilliant ancient history academic.

  29. He knew more than anyone else I knew about the Bible.

  30. But he did not have any faith in Jesus.

  31. Then there is the type of faith where one may actually comprehend that Jesus is who he says he is.

  32. But they still do not take the step to believe in Jesus and trust in him.

  33. In Matthew chapter 8, for example, Jesus encounters two demon-possessed men.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  34. The demons possessing those men acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God and that he has authority to drive them out.

  35. They understand who Jesus is.

  36. They comprehend who he is.

  37. But they certainly do not have any faith in Jesus.

  38. There is even a temporary faith mentioned in the Bible.

  39. The parable of the sower in Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  40. A shallow faith that even though it may flourish for a short period of time, the troubles or persecution that can accompany the Christian life quickly wither the faith away.

  41. I think of previous examples, even a watermark of people who have seemingly come to faith, even shared their testimonies on stage, only to have fallen away soon after when hardship has come.

  42. All of these examples of faith, all equally fall short.

  43. They do not save.

  44. They do not stand up to scrutiny.

  45. They do not stand the test of time.

  46. What is the key ingredient missing here?

  47. When the Bible talks about faith, genuine faith, it is talking about saving faith.

  48. That is trusting and resting in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  49. As communicated in the Bible, for salvation.

  50. It begins with knowing and comprehending the facts, but continues to deep heart conviction and faith.

  51. We didn't see Jesus die on the cross, yet we believe.

  52. We haven't seen the glory of his future promises when he returns, yet we are assured of these things.

  53. It's more than just believing in God.

  54. It's believing God.

  55. It is admitting we are helpless and dependent on God.

  56. Further to this, we often stop there when we think about faith, right?

  57. But further to this, when we are first saved by faith, and we have faith, I think it's fair to say that we have a relatively weak faith, actually.

  58. It's not that our salvation is somehow less guaranteed or less valuable.

  59. We are saved.

  60. There is no uncertainty in that.

  61. But it is that our faith is not necessarily as experienced, battle-tested, as someone who has been a Christian for a long period of time,

  62. who has trusted and held on to God through the ups and downs of life.

  63. Faith that grows over time.

  64. That's what we should be striving for.

  65. A strong faith.

  66. It resolves from action.

  67. The words of surrender and promise we made when we first became Christians, we make them daily.

  68. What might it look different?

  69. What might look different in our lives if we had this strong faith?

  70. What might it look different about Watermark if we collectively as a church had this strong faith?

  71. We'll touch on that soon.

  72. But let's look at an inspiring example from Hebrews 11 first.

  73. Let's look at Abraham.

  74. In verses 8 to 10 of Hebrews chapter 11, we read,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  75. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.

  76. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

  77. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land,

  78. living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him for the same promise.

  79. See, Abraham's faith resulted in him being willing to go and leave what he knew for this unexpected inheritance.

  80. He didn't even know the location of where he was going.

  81. It's just wild to think of that kind of response.

  82. We also know that Abraham's faith resulted in him waiting at an already old age with a barren wife

  83. for his promised biological offspring, Isaac.

  84. On top of that, Isaac is born.

  85. He matures into a young man.

  86. In verses 17 to 19, we read,

  87. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac.

  88. And he who had received promises, Abraham, was in the act of offering up his only son,

  89. of whom it was said,

  90. Through Isaac shall your offspring be made.

  91. He considered that God was able to even raise him from the dead,

  92. from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.

  93. God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac.

  94. As we know, God didn't make Abraham go through with it,

  95. but Abraham's faith still resulted in him being willing to give up that which was most precious to him.

  96. Abraham is just an ordinary guy.

  97. He is by no means perfect.

  98. He is by no means extraordinary in and of himself.

  99. He had his doubts.

  100. He even tried to short-circuit God's promise of natural offspring

  101. by agreeing to procreate with and then marry his mate.

  102. And yet he still is seen as a hero of the faith,

  103. included and highlighted here in Hebrews 11.

  104. You see, strong faith is not perfect faith.

  105. Strong faith is consistent faith in our perfect God.

  106. And why is it important to have this strong faith?

  107. There are many reasons,

  108. but we'll focus on one from the text again.

  109. Hebrews 11 verse 6 says,

    Hebrews 11:6

  110. And without faith,

  111. faith, without faith,

  112. it is impossible to please him.

  113. For whoever would draw near to God

  114. must believe that he exists

  115. and that he rewards those who seek him.

  116. Faith enables us to please God.

  117. We see the examples of Rahab and Esther

  118. exalted in their respective stories.

  119. Faith so strong that they were willing

  120. to prioritize God over their own personal safety.

  121. Rahab, who's mentioned in Hebrews 11,

  122. willing to hide and protect Israelite spies,

  123. even in the face of the king's question

  124. and the king's scrutiny.

  125. Esther, willing to literally put her life on the line

  126. in the king's presence

  127. for the rescue of her people.

  128. It is not that the things we do

  129. in and of themselves

  130. are what pleases God.

  131. It is that the motivating factor

  132. behind those actions.

  133. The faith that we have

  134. that God is who he says it is,

  135. he is, no matter the outcome.

  136. Don't we want to be a church

  137. that pleases God?

  138. Because we're a church with strong faith.

  139. How can we increase this faith?

  140. We'll look at three main ways.

  141. The first thing always,

  142. and that's a common theme,

  143. I think,

  144. appearing over this weekend,

  145. is pray.

  146. Simon's going to speak about it

  147. in more detail.

  148. But prayer,

  149. I remember Neil's sharing this with me,

  150. prayer is essentially

  151. just our faith being verbalized.

  152. If we believe

  153. God is who he said he is in the Bible,

  154. that we are fully dependent on him

  155. for absolutely everything,

  156. we cannot but pray

  157. to him

  158. to give us more faith.

  159. Guys, we have the corporate prayer times

  160. once a month.

  161. For those of us who can make it,

  162. I know that not all of us can,

  163. my wife for example,

  164. we need to be prioritizing this.

  165. These times are crucial

  166. to us growing in faith individually

  167. and as a church.

  168. Now I know not everyone can make it,

  169. that's okay.

  170. But find other times,

  171. find other structures

  172. that work for you,

  173. which can accommodate

  174. with you praying with others.

  175. The point is,

  176. the picture of a dependent church

  177. is a church that not only

  178. prays individually,

  179. but prays together.

  180. Secondly,

  181. community also plays a role

  182. in growing our faith.

  183. If we talk about,

  184. if all we talk about

  185. when we get together

  186. are the surface level events

  187. that are happening in our life,

  188. which are easy to do,

  189. I suffer from this all the time,

  190. that is not going to grow our faith.

  191. We need to be going deeper,

  192. helping each other

  193. see the areas of our lives

  194. where we do struggle

  195. and lack faith,

  196. sharing the burden,

  197. praying with each other there.

  198. Conversely,

  199. we may be flourishing

  200. and where we are flourishing

  201. and have faith,

  202. we should rejoice with each other

  203. and encourage each other in that.

  204. We can ask simple

  205. and direct questions

  206. that can be helpful

  207. to go deeper,

  208. like,

  209. what's on your mind

  210. more often than not recently?

  211. What's been a real pleasure

  212. and joy recently?

  213. What's been hard

  214. and painful recently?

  215. Perhaps we can think

  216. of those questions

  217. for ourselves.

  218. Having an answer

  219. to these questions

  220. first,

  221. before asking the question

  222. of others,

  223. can help as well.

  224. I was going to

  225. have a last point,

  226. but actually,

  227. in our group discussion,

  228. David made a great point,

  229. I think,

  230. so I'm just going to

  231. kind of go with the flow

  232. here a little bit.

  233. He said,

  234. a church that has strong faith

  235. is a church that doesn't bend

  236. to the message

  237. and to the culture

  238. of the world.

  239. It's a church that continues

  240. to preach the gospel,

  241. even in the face

  242. of what the world says

  243. perhaps is the opposite

  244. or goes against the grain

  245. of culture,

  246. whether it be our own

  247. ethnic culture,

  248. whether it be the general

  249. culture of society.

  250. A church that has strong faith

  251. is a church that believes

  252. God who he says he is,

  253. believes God is who he says he is,

  254. and holds true to the Bible

  255. and what it teaches.

  256. Thank you, Dave.

  257. That was great.

  258. Fourthly and lastly,

  259. take risks.

  260. An essential practice

  261. to grow our faith

  262. is to take risks.

  263. I wonder how many of us

  264. are naturally risk-taking

  265. people here.

  266. It's definitely not myself.

  267. You know,

  268. taking risks implies

  269. that we are facing

  270. the unknown,

  271. putting ourselves

  272. in situations

  273. where something

  274. is on the line.

  275. We could lose something,

  276. and we depend on God

  277. no matter what the outcome.

  278. In some ways,

  279. if we have strong faith,

  280. a life of risk-taking

  281. is really the only

  282. logical outcome, right?

  283. We have God on our side.

  284. If we are unsure

  285. where to start in this,

  286. we don't need to be

  287. like Abraham.

  288. We don't need to just

  289. pack up and leave

  290. and go somewhere

  291. we don't know

  292. where we're going.

  293. But it's also important

  294. to be reminded

  295. that we learn

  296. how to live by faith

  297. by living by faith.

  298. Just do it.

  299. Don't feel like

  300. you have to wait

  301. until you have enough faith.

  302. It grows.

  303. And you can start small.

  304. Find someone here

  305. who seems more mature

  306. in their faith than you.

  307. Oscar mentioned

  308. people in his talk before

  309. who have shown faith

  310. and taken risks.

  311. Speak to them.

  312. Ask them

  313. what has increased

  314. their faith.

  315. Read God's Word.

  316. Hebrews 11,

  317. for example,

  318. and the related stories.

  319. Your faith will grow

  320. through these real life

  321. and testimonies

  322. through God's Word.

  323. Practice things.

  324. Small things,

  325. like initiating

  326. saying sorry

  327. to someone else

  328. or reaching out

  329. to reconcile

  330. with someone

  331. we've not been seeing

  332. eye to eye with.

  333. We may be unsure

  334. of the outcome

  335. and we're often unsure

  336. of the outcome,

  337. but we have faith

  338. that our sins

  339. are forgiven in Jesus.

  340. We are actually

  341. secure in His love.

  342. As God guides

  343. and protects you

  344. through these things,

  345. your faith will grow.

  346. That's individually.

  347. But what about

  348. as a church?

  349. A watermark

  350. with strong faith

  351. may look like

  352. watermark

  353. as being

  354. stretchingly generous,

  355. increasing

  356. or even starting

  357. to tithe

  358. and give charitably,

  359. giving money away

  360. even when we feel

  361. the pinch

  362. because we have faith

  363. that God will provide

  364. what we need

  365. when we need it

  366. as He's proven

  367. in His Word.

  368. It will look like

  369. watermarks

  370. stepping out as a faith,

  371. stepping out in faith

  372. as a church.

  373. Starting second service,

  374. which we've done,

  375. eventually looking

  376. to plan the church.

  377. It will be committing

  378. to a permanent

  379. venue search

  380. for the church

  381. and moving steadfastly

  382. towards that,

  383. committing financially

  384. and in prayer.

  385. It could look like

  386. watermark as being

  387. more bold in mission,

  388. whether it be locally

  389. finding ways

  390. to share our faith,

  391. as Oscar said,

  392. with our friend

  393. or neighbour

  394. or co-worker,

  395. or internationally

  396. raising up

  397. more formal missionaries

  398. and support

  399. from within the congregation.

  400. It can look

  401. very,

  402. it has varied

  403. outcomes,

  404. watermark

  405. being a church

  406. of faith.

  407. Watermark Church,

  408. out of all

  409. the Christian

  410. virtues,

  411. it is not love

  412. that saves,

  413. it is not joy

  414. that saves,

  415. it is not peace

  416. that saves,

  417. it is not hope

  418. that saves,

  419. it is faith

  420. that saves.

  421. it is only

  422. by faith

  423. that we are saved.

  424. And it is only

  425. with faith

  426. that we can grow

  427. and flourish

  428. into spiritual maturity,

  429. both individually

  430. and as a church,

  431. pleasing to God.

  432. Whatever that looks like,

  433. let's be a church

  434. known for its deep

  435. and increasing faith

  436. for the glory of God.

  437. and why

  438. let us ép library

  439. my taught

  440. i

  441. and

  442. the

  443. university

  444. that

  445. benefits.
