  1. So we're continuing a series in the book of Hebrews, Hebrews 11, a chapter in Hebrews on faith.

  2. ! And David will be up in a moment to teach for us.

  3. But first, let's read together.

  4. We're going to begin with Genesis chapter 4.

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  5. This is God's holy word.

  6. Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying,

  7. I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.

  8. And again, she bore his brother Abel.

  9. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.

  10. And in the course of time, Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground,

  11. and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions.

  12. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering.

  13. But for Cain and his offering, he had no regard.

  14. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.

  15. And the Lord said to Cain,

  16. Why are you angry, and why is your face fallen?

  17. If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  18. And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door, and its desire is for you, and you must rule over it.

  19. Cain spoke to Abel, his brother.

  20. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

  21. Then the Lord said to Cain,

  22. Where is Abel, your brother?

  23. And he said,

  24. I do not know.

  25. Am I my brother's keeper?

  26. And the Lord said,

  27. What have you done?

  28. The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.

  29. And now you are cursed from the ground,

  30. which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

  31. In Hebrews 11, verses 1 to 4,

    Hebrews 11:1–4

  32. the writer says this,

  33. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,

  34. the conviction of things not seen,

  35. for by it the people of old received their commendation.

  36. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the Word of God,

  37. so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

  38. By faith, Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain,

  39. through which he was commended as righteous,

  40. God commending him by accepting his gifts.

  41. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.

  42. This is God's holy Word.

  43. Our text this evening is Hebrews 11 and verse 4.

  44. Let me read it to you once again.

  45. Down through human history, there have been many examples of men and women

  46. who refused to be silent in the face of oppression and injustice.

  47. Their voices could not be silenced,

  48. despite perhaps great pressure, persecution, even intimidation.

  49. And as we turn to Hebrews 11, verse 4 tonight,

    Hebrews 11:4

  50. we are being, as it were, summoned to listen to a voice

  51. that similarly refuses to be silent.

  52. And that voice is the voice of Abel.

  53. This is where the writer of Hebrews begins in his great gallery of men and women of faith.

  54. And though Abel's life was one cut short by violence and murder,

  55. yet nonetheless, his voice echoes down through the centuries to us this evening.

  56. Though he died, he still speaks.

  57. And so what is it about this man Abel that continues to speak to us down through the generations?

  58. What makes his voice so enduring?

  59. What message does his life continue to proclaim?

  60. What does he have to say to us this evening?

  61. Well, there's a lot in the text.

  62. I want to highlight just three things from it tonight.

  63. Tonight, we're going to do this, Abel, in one sermon.

  64. I think I mentioned last week, I'd been looking at the sermons of Thomas Manton.

  65. He had eight on this one text.

  66. That is not a line that I will be taking.

  67. You'll be glad to know.

  68. Three things I want to highlight.

  69. First of all, I want you to notice that through faith,

  70. Abel offered what we might call an acceptable sacrifice.

  71. By faith, Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain.

  72. And so, we are being taken back by the writer to these early chapters of the book of Genesis,

  73. and especially to chapter 4 of that great book,

  74. to this famous account of Cain and Abel.

  75. Before the fall, Eden, the garden, was, as it were, a sanctuary of the Lord,

  76. a kind of natural tabernacle where God met with Adam and Eve.

  77. It was a holy place.

  78. It was a place of fellowship and perfect communion with God.

  79. But with the entry of sin, all of that changed.

  80. Judgment fell.

  81. Adam and Eve were cast out of the garden, driven out of the garden.

  82. And Genesis 4 is a chapter that begins to describe the reality of life in a sinful and fallen world.

  83. Along with sin comes disease, decay, disorder, and death.

  84. Here is life in a world that has been spoiled by sin,

  85. and in which men and women have become alienated from God,

  86. and indeed from one another.

  87. Here is life east of Eden.

  88. And the story of Cain and Abel is one that reflects this new reality.

  89. And it's interesting that first and foremost,

  90. it's a story that begins and describes this new reality,

  91. first and foremost, as being about worship.

  92. That's the first thing highlighted in the text of Genesis 4.

  93. Genesis 4, verse 1,

    Genesis 4:1

  94. Adam knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain.

  95. I've gotten a man with the help of the Lord.

  96. Again, she bore his brother Abel, Abel a keeper of sheep,

  97. Cain a worker of the ground.

  98. And in the course of time,

  99. Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground.

  100. And Abel also brought the firstborn of his flock

  101. and of their fat portions.

  102. Two brothers, Cain and Abel,

  103. children, one commentator says,

  104. children of the eighth day.

  105. And they bring their worship to the Lord.

  106. They are acknowledging Him as the giver of life,

  107. the one to whom they owe honor and respect and praise.

  108. And they each bring some of the fruits of their respective callings.

  109. And they bring them as sacrifices to the Lord.

  110. Cain brings some of his harvest.

  111. Abel brings an animal from his flock.

  112. But the worship,

  113. the sacrifice they make,

  114. the worship they bring,

  115. the offerings they make,

  116. have, we are told,

  117. a profoundly different result.

  118. And so we read in Genesis 4-5,

  119. the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,

  120. but for Cain and his offering,

  121. he had no regard.

  122. And so Cain was very angry,

  123. and his face fell.

  124. Some translations say the Lord looked with favor.

  125. That is, he accepted the sacrifice of Abel,

  126. but rejected Cain's offering.

  127. Why was that?

  128. What were God's reasons

  129. for accepting Abel's worship

  130. and at the same time rejecting Cain's?

  131. Now, there are a number of theories and suggestions.

  132. We won't go into all of that,

  133. but, you know,

  134. some suggest it was because of the difference

  135. in their offerings.

  136. Cain offers the fruit of the ground,

  137. his crops, and his vegetables.

  138. Abel offers a blood or an animal sacrifice.

  139. But that's not really what the text tells us.

  140. And anyway, both of those kinds of offerings

  141. are deemed acceptable in the Old Testament.

  142. The text of Genesis 4 says,

  143. the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,

  144. but for Cain and his offering,

  145. he had no regard.

  146. In other words, the emphasis here is on the person,

  147. not on the quality or type of the offering.

  148. It's the condition of the worshiper

  149. that appears to be of first importance here.

  150. And I think this is exactly what the writer

  151. to the Hebrews is highlighting when he says,

  152. by faith, Abel offered to God

  153. a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain.

  154. Why was Abel's worship and sacrifice

  155. more acceptable?

  156. The answer is faith.

  157. Why was Cain's worship unacceptable?

  158. There was a lack of faith.

  159. The critical thing was not the sacrifice

  160. or the offerings made,

  161. but the spirit in which those offerings were offered.

  162. Because God looks not just on what is offered,

  163. but on the heart of the one bringing the offering.

  164. The difference between the two brothers

  165. was Abel listened to God,

  166. trusted God, obeyed God.

  167. Whereas Cain, the implication here,

  168. simply did his own thing.

  169. Yes, they both offered their produce.

  170. They both offered sacrifices.

  171. But the difference was not in the offering,

  172. but in the man, in the men.

  173. Calvin writes of Abel,

  174. his sacrifice pleased God

  175. because he himself was pleasing to God.

  176. Abel's heart was given to God,

  177. while his brother Cain brought his offering

  178. in a completely different attitude and spirit.

  179. And that's what we see clearly

  180. in the text of Genesis 4.

  181. Verse 6,

  182. The Lord said to Cain,

  183. Why are you angry?

  184. Why is your face fallen?

  185. If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  186. If you do not do well,

  187. sin is crouching at the door.

  188. It's desirous for you,

  189. but you must rule over it.

  190. When his offering is rejected,

  191. you see Cain's reaction,

  192. his response,

  193. betrays what is in his heart.

  194. You'll notice that he doesn't confess his sin.

  195. He doesn't ask for forgiveness.

  196. He doesn't throw himself on the mercy of God.

  197. There is absolutely no sense of sorrow or humility

  198. or repentance before God.

  199. Instead, he is raging.

  200. He is full of anger and resentment.

  201. And his response reveals arrogance and presumption.

  202. I mean, who does Yahweh think he is?

  203. I've done my bit.

  204. Haven't I made my offering?

  205. Haven't I brought my gifts?

  206. Isn't that good enough?

  207. There's that kind of underlying assumption

  208. that God is obligated to accept him

  209. no matter what.

  210. I have discovered over the years,

  211. lots of people still think like that.

  212. I've done my bit for God.

  213. I went to church at Christmas.

  214. I put something in the offering.

  215. But religious formalism

  216. is absolutely death to the soul.

  217. God looks not simply at what we bring to him,

  218. but why and how we bring it.

  219. He looks on the heart of the one bringing worship.

  220. Is that worship being offered in faith?

  221. Is there trust in God and in his word?

  222. Not all worship is acceptable to God.

  223. It's quite possible to offer worship

  224. that's actually all about ourselves

  225. and not God.

  226. And that is the way of Cain.

  227. The important thing about worship in one sense

  228. is not whether it suits me, fits my taste,

  229. but actually whether it fits God's taste.

  230. Not am I comfortable with this,

  231. but is God honored in this?

  232. Not does this give me the right feelings,

  233. but is the living God,

  234. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit glorified?

  235. Who's the primary consumer

  236. towards which our worship is offered?

  237. Is it myself?

  238. Or is it the living God?

  239. True worship springs from a believing heart.

  240. And the key to worship that honors God

  241. is faith.

  242. For Cain,

  243. it was not merely the presence of sin,

  244. but the absence of faith

  245. that was decisive.

  246. It was through faith

  247. that Abel offered an acceptable sacrifice.

  248. Brings me to the second thing here.

  249. And that is through faith,

  250. Abel was commended as righteous

  251. and accepted by God.

  252. Our verse goes on,

  253. through which he was commended as righteous.

  254. God commending him

  255. by accepting his gifts.

  256. And again,

  257. we have this language

  258. of commendation,

  259. acceptance.

  260. Abel was commended as righteous,

  261. and that commendation

  262. was to be seen

  263. in the acceptance of his gift,

  264. his offering.

  265. And this really is a descriptive,

  266. it's really a miracle

  267. of divine grace.

  268. Abel, a sinner,

  269. is commended,

  270. considered,

  271. counted as righteous.

  272. We're not to read this text

  273. and draw the conclusion

  274. that somehow Abel

  275. was inherently righteous.

  276. Far from it,

  277. he was unrighteous.

  278. He was a sinner.

  279. He was living east of Eden.

  280. It was only through faith

  281. that he was commended as righteous.

  282. By grace,

  283. he looked towards God.

  284. And in faith,

  285. he trusted in him.

  286. By faith,

  287. he was commended

  288. as a righteous man.

  289. And that commendation

  290. was not a reward

  291. for Abel's perfection.

  292. It was itself

  293. a gift of God's grace,

  294. received by faith.

  295. Because righteousness

  296. is never something

  297. that we ourselves

  298. can manufacture.

  299. It is something

  300. that God gives

  301. and bestows.

  302. And so,

  303. it doesn't matter

  304. who we are this evening.

  305. If you want to be accepted

  306. by God,

  307. if you want to be counted

  308. as righteous before God,

  309. there is only one way.

  310. And that's through faith

  311. in Jesus Christ.

  312. Only in coming to God

  313. in humble faith

  314. and trusting in him

  315. and in his provision

  316. can we be commended

  317. as righteous.

  318. The way of arrogant

  319. self-sufficiency,

  320. that is the way of Cain,

  321. is always a dead end.

  322. John Calvin writes,

  323. of that faith

  324. which strips us

  325. of all arrogance

  326. and leads us naked

  327. and needy to God,

  328. that we may seek salvation

  329. from him alone,

  330. which would otherwise

  331. be far removed from us.

  332. In the previous chapter,

  333. the writer of Hebrews

  334. quotes from Habakkuk 2.5.

  335. That's in Hebrews 10.38.

  336. The righteous by faith

  337. shall live.

  338. Men and women of God

  339. do not live

  340. by their own achievements,

  341. but only through faith in God.

  342. Our lives are to lean

  343. wholly and solely

  344. upon God himself.

  345. We sometimes sing those words,

  346. I dare not trust

  347. my sweetest frame,

  348. but wholly lean

  349. on Jesus' name.

  350. The American

  351. Reformed theologian

  352. B.B. Walfield

  353. wrote these words,

  354. The saving power of faith

  355. resides thus

  356. not in itself,

  357. but in the almighty

  358. Savior

  359. on whom it rests.

  360. It's not faith that saves,

  361. but faith in Jesus Christ.

  362. Strictly speaking,

  363. it is Christ that saves

  364. through faith.

  365. The saving power

  366. resides exclusively

  367. not in the act

  368. or attitude

  369. or nature

  370. of faith,

  371. but in the object

  372. of faith.

  373. Abel was righteous

  374. before the Lord

  375. by faith

  376. in the coming

  377. seed of the woman

  378. who would crush

  379. the serpent's head.

  380. That is Jesus Christ.

  381. By grace,

  382. he was saved

  383. through faith.

  384. That not of himself,

  385. it was the gift of God.

  386. By faith,

  387. he became

  388. the first human being,

  389. as it were,

  390. to be justified and

  391. brought into the presence

  392. of God

  393. and made perfect.

  394. Only faith

  395. in Jesus Christ

  396. brings acceptance

  397. with God.

  398. Only through Christ

  399. can we bring

  400. acceptable worship.

  401. And it's interesting

  402. that this idea

  403. of acceptable worship

  404. is actually one

  405. that we find

  406. throughout the New Testament

  407. and throughout

  408. the epistles.

  409. Peter,

  410. for example,

  411. speaks of offering

  412. spiritual sacrifices

  413. acceptable to God

  414. through Jesus Christ.

  415. 1 Peter 2.5.

  416. In the very next chapter

  417. of Hebrews,

  418. the author speaks

  419. of offering to God

  420. acceptable worship

  421. with reverence

  422. and awe.

  423. Hebrews 12.28.

  424. Philippians 4,

  425. Paul writes

  426. of the gifts

  427. he received

  428. as being a fragrant offering,

  429. a sacrifice

  430. acceptable

  431. and pleasing to God.

  432. Philippians 4.18.

  433. And then,

  434. most famously of all,

  435. Paul writes

  436. to the Christians

  437. in Rome.

  438. He tells them

  439. to present their bodies

  440. as a living sacrifice,

  441. holy and acceptable

  442. to God,

  443. which is your spiritual worship.

  444. Romans 12.1.

  445. Worship means

  446. offering to God

  447. ourselves.

  448. It's always a response

  449. to what God

  450. has revealed

  451. of Himself.

  452. And worship,

  453. therefore,

  454. involves the whole of life.

  455. It involves

  456. all of us.

  457. It's not a hobby.

  458. It's not a pastime.

  459. We sometimes sing,

  460. love so amazing,

  461. so divine,

  462. demands what?

  463. My soul,

  464. my life,

  465. my all.

  466. I recall many years ago

  467. how old,

  468. back in the 1980s.

  469. So that's how old that is.

  470. That's a long time ago.

  471. And I remember

  472. as a younger Christian

  473. seeing the Christian artist,

  474. the guy called

  475. Jeffrey Stevenson.

  476. And he was doing a mime.

  477. I actually think

  478. he became an academic.

  479. I think,

  480. actually,

  481. might be a lecturer

  482. at Edinburgh University

  483. if he's the same guy.

  484. And this mime,

  485. which made quite an impression

  486. of me,

  487. if I'm sitting in the pew,

  488. I won't do the mime.

  489. You'll be glad to know.

  490. I'll be going too far.

  491. But he was sitting in the pew.

  492. And in those days,

  493. there was an offering bag

  494. passed around.

  495. And as it came to him,

  496. he mimed this bit.

  497. He's kind of putting his hand

  498. in his pocket

  499. and he takes out a few coins

  500. and he drops them in.

  501. And then the offering bag remains.

  502. And so he reaches for his wallet

  503. and he takes out some notes

  504. and he puts it in.

  505. Put it in the bag.

  506. Bag remains.

  507. And so then he,

  508. eventually,

  509. he kind of takes out

  510. all the coins

  511. and his wallet

  512. and he takes off his watch

  513. and he takes off his ring

  514. or whatever else,

  515. puts it in the offering bag.

  516. And so,

  517. still the bag is there.

  518. Until eventually,

  519. he places it on the ground.

  520. He steps into it

  521. and then pulled it over his head.

  522. It was a very powerful visual image.

  523. Christian worship involves

  524. everything that we are

  525. and all that we have.

  526. We're to hold nothing back from him.

  527. That was the big difference

  528. between Cain and Abel.

  529. Faith and no faith.

  530. William still was a prominent

  531. Scottish minister

  532. of last century.

  533. And he has a comment

  534. on this passage

  535. in volume three

  536. of his collected writings.

  537. This is what he writes.

  538. Cain's heart well knew

  539. why his offering

  540. had not been accepted.

  541. He was not in it.

  542. It was a kind of concession.

  543. Whereas Abel was in his sacrifice

  544. as a humble,

  545. believing sinner.

  546. There is all the difference

  547. in the world.

  548. I think that hits the nail

  549. on the head.

  550. He was not in it.

  551. He was not in the sacrifice.

  552. He was not in the offering.

  553. He was not in the worship.

  554. Let me ask you tonight,

  555. are you in the worship?

  556. Are you in the singing?

  557. Are you in the ministry?

  558. Are you in the offering?

  559. Or are you going through

  560. the motions?

  561. Are you worshiping

  562. the way of Abel

  563. or the way of Cain?

  564. William Temple wrote

  565. these words,

  566. You have to trust God

  567. to worship like that.

  568. You have to believe in Him.

  569. You have to cast yourself

  570. on Him.

  571. You have to give yourself

  572. to Him.

  573. For trusting Him

  574. will lead to joy,

  575. not sadness.

  576. To freedom,

  577. not slavery.

  578. To life,

  579. not death.

  580. To hope,

  581. not fear.

  582. True worship begins

  583. with a heart

  584. that trusts God's character

  585. and clings

  586. to His grace

  587. and mercy.

  588. through faith,

  589. Abel offered

  590. an acceptable sacrifice.

  591. Through faith,

  592. Abel was commended

  593. as righteous

  594. and accepted by God.

  595. And then thirdly

  596. and finally here,

  597. through faith,

  598. Abel continues

  599. to speak

  600. even after death.

  601. And through his faith,

  602. though he died,

  603. he still speaks.

  604. Abel's life

  605. was cut short.

  606. He became

  607. the first martyr,

  608. first to die

  609. for his faith.

  610. And yet the writer

  611. to the Hebrews says,

  612. His voice is not silent.

  613. He still speaks.

  614. He still bears witness.

  615. He still testifies

  616. to God's goodness

  617. and grace.

  618. What does he speak of?

  619. Let me mention

  620. three things

  621. very briefly.

  622. I think he speaks

  623. to us of the cost

  624. of faith.

  625. Abel's faith

  626. led him

  627. to a bloody field,

  628. just as the faith

  629. of countless saints

  630. has led them

  631. to persecution,

  632. suffering,

  633. and death.

  634. And yet in their deaths

  635. they testify

  636. that God is faithful.

  637. Abel's blood,

  638. we're told

  639. in Genesis 4,

    Genesis 4:10

  640. verse 10,

  641. cried out

  642. from the ground.

  643. The voice

  644. of your brother's blood

  645. is crying to me

  646. from the ground,

  647. says the Lord.

  648. God heard that cry.

  649. And God hears

  650. the cries

  651. of his people.

  652. They are never ignored.

  653. And if you're suffering

  654. for your faith,

  655. take heart.

  656. Your voice

  657. is heard in heaven.

  658. Actually,

  659. John,

  660. the apostle,

  661. takes this incident

  662. and uses it

  663. as a kind of word

  664. of encouragement

  665. for those

  666. he was writing to.

  667. He says,

  668. for this is the message

  669. that you've heard

  670. from the beginning

  671. that we should love

  672. one another.

  673. We should not be

  674. like Cain

  675. who was of the evil one

  676. and murdered his brother.

  677. And why did he murder him?

  678. Because his own deeds

  679. were evil

  680. and his brother's righteous.

  681. Do not be surprised,

  682. brothers,

  683. that the world hates you.

  684. God sees the hatred

  685. of the unrighteous

  686. for the righteous.

  687. And he says,

  688. you know,

  689. don't be surprised

  690. sometimes

  691. if the world hates you.

  692. And there's a kind of comfort

  693. here

  694. for God's people.

  695. Abel's blood

  696. cries out

  697. for justice.

  698. But vengeance

  699. and justice

  700. are not things

  701. we're to take

  702. into our own hands.

  703. These things

  704. are matters

  705. for God.

  706. God will act

  707. in justice.

  708. His will

  709. will be done.

  710. The God of the Bible

  711. is not deaf

  712. or blind

  713. to the evil

  714. and injustice,

  715. the many evils

  716. and injustices

  717. we see in this world.

  718. And even if the world

  719. does not care,

  720. there is one who does,

  721. and that is God himself.

  722. Thomas Manton writes,

  723. the blood of a martyr

  724. hath a loud voice

  725. in the ears

  726. of God.

  727. The cost of faith.

  728. And then,

  729. I think also

  730. he speaks to us

  731. of the triumph

  732. of faith.

  733. Death

  734. could not silence him.

  735. His faith,

  736. though it cost him

  737. his life,

  738. secured

  739. eternal commendation.

  740. He is alive

  741. in God's presence.

  742. His example

  743. calls us

  744. to persevere

  745. in the way of faith.

  746. And yes,

  747. people may mock

  748. our faith,

  749. maybe our families

  750. misunderstand that.

  751. Maybe our own hearts

  752. are sometimes,

  753. you know,

  754. tremble.

  755. But faith

  756. in God's promise

  757. will never be put

  758. to shame.

  759. And there's a reminder

  760. here of the powerful

  761. impact a life

  762. of faith can have.

  763. As we live

  764. on the basis

  765. of what God

  766. has promised

  767. us in the gospel,

  768. who knows

  769. how God

  770. might be pleased

  771. to use our testimony,

  772. even after

  773. we're long gone.

  774. The life

  775. of faith

  776. you're living

  777. today

  778. may yet

  779. become a legacy

  780. for your children

  781. or your grandchildren.

  782. We may never

  783. know the full

  784. extent

  785. and impact

  786. of our witness

  787. in this world.

  788. So let me

  789. encourage you

  790. to remain faithful

  791. and to keep on

  792. in the way

  793. of faith.

  794. sometimes we feel

  795. we can feel

  796. as if our testimony

  797. of faith

  798. has been rejected,

  799. maybe even despised.

  800. Yet God may use it.

  801. Though he died,

  802. yet still he speaks.

  803. Abel still lives.

  804. He's part of that

  805. great cloud of witnesses.

  806. And he urges us

  807. to trust God,

  808. to bring him

  809. the same kind of worship.

  810. a kind of worship

  811. in which we give

  812. ourselves

  813. wholeheartedly

  814. to the Lord.

  815. And then a third

  816. thing here.

  817. I think Abel

  818. also speaks

  819. and points us

  820. to Jesus Christ.

  821. In the very next

  822. chapter

  823. we have another

  824. mention of Abel

  825. and it's one

  826. that makes a very

  827. direct connection

  828. with Jesus.

  829. The author of Hebrews

  830. talks of

  831. coming in worship

  832. as we were thinking.

  833. perhaps this morning

  834. of the city

  835. of the living God.

  836. And to Jesus

  837. he says,

  838. verse 24,

  839. the mediator

  840. of a new covenant

  841. and the sprinkled

  842. blood

  843. that speaks

  844. a better word

  845. than the blood

  846. of Abel.

  847. So what's this

  848. connection between

  849. the blood of Jesus

  850. and the blood

  851. of Abel?

  852. Well, as I mentioned,

  853. back in Genesis 4

  854. we're told that

  855. Abel's blood

  856. cried out

  857. from the ground.

  858. What have you done?

  859. The voice of your

  860. brother's blood

  861. is crying to me

  862. from the ground.

  863. Abel's blood

  864. cried to God

  865. from the ground

  866. and demanded

  867. justice,

  868. demanded condemnation,

  869. demanded judgment.

  870. But while

  871. the blood

  872. of Abel

  873. called for justice,

  874. now the blood

  875. of Jesus

  876. speaks of something

  877. very different.

  878. It speaks not

  879. of vengeance

  880. or judgment,

  881. instead

  882. it speaks

  883. a better word,

  884. a word

  885. of forgiveness,

  886. a reconciliation

  887. with God.

  888. What can

  889. wash away

  890. my sin?

  891. Nothing

  892. but the blood

  893. of Jesus.

  894. What can

  895. make me

  896. whole again?

  897. Nothing

  898. but the blood

  899. of Jesus.

  900. The blood

  901. of Jesus Christ

  902. is an atoning

  903. sacrifice.

  904. It is the

  905. reality to which

  906. Abel's animal

  907. sacrifice

  908. pointed.

  909. In Genesis 4,

  910. Abel's offering

  911. and the language

  912. used to describe

  913. it reflects

  914. later Old

  915. Testament

  916. regulations

  917. for making

  918. atonement for

  919. sin at the

  920. tabernacle and

  921. temple.

  922. Because the

  923. worship of faith

  924. draws near to

  925. God on the

  926. basis of

  927. sacrifice.

  928. That theme

  929. runs right

  930. throughout the

  931. biblical witness

  932. from Genesis

  933. to Revelation.

  934. And in the

  935. previous chapter

  936. here, the

  937. writer of Hebrews

  938. reminds us

  939. that that

  940. sacrifice is

  941. nothing less

  942. than the blood

  943. of Jesus Christ.

  944. Remember he

  945. says in

  946. Hebrews 10

  947. 19,

  948. Therefore,

  949. brothers,

  950. since we have

  951. confidence to

  952. enter the

  953. holy places

  954. by the

  955. blood of

  956. Jesus,

  957. by the

  958. new and

  959. living way,

  960. he opened

  961. for us

  962. through the

  963. curtain,

  964. that is

  965. through his

  966. flesh,

  967. and since we

  968. have a

  969. great priest

  970. over the

  971. house of

  972. God,

  973. let us

  974. draw near

  975. with a

  976. true heart

  977. in full

  978. assurance

  979. of faith,

  980. with our

  981. hearts

  982. sprinkled

  983. clean from

  984. an evil

  985. conscience,

  986. and our

  987. bodies washed

  988. with pure

  989. water.

  990. The blood

  991. of Jesus

  992. Christ speaks

  993. to us a

  994. word demanding

  995. not condemnation,

  996. but deliverance

  997. and salvation,

  998. not expulsion,

  999. but reconciliation,

  1000. not pushing us

  1001. away, but

  1002. welcoming us

  1003. in.

  1004. And it's at the

  1005. cross of Christ

  1006. we see the

  1007. blood that

  1008. can make

  1009. even the

  1010. foulest

  1011. clean.

  1012. Sometimes

  1013. when, on a

  1014. Sunday, we've

  1015. had people

  1016. round for

  1017. lunch,

  1018. occasions I've

  1019. sent them on

  1020. ahead with

  1021. the keys

  1022. for the

  1023. house, because

  1024. we've been

  1025. delayed, and

  1026. sometimes they

  1027. feel a bit

  1028. uncomfortable

  1029. letting themselves

  1030. into the

  1031. house.

  1032. But it's a

  1033. fact that I've

  1034. given them

  1035. the key.

  1036. I've given

  1037. them access.

  1038. I want them

  1039. to go in.

  1040. Sinners, we

  1041. always feel

  1042. uncomfortable

  1043. about our

  1044. sin, and

  1045. that's a

  1046. healthy thing.

  1047. But God

  1048. has sent

  1049. His Son

  1050. to die

  1051. that we

  1052. might be

  1053. forgiven.

  1054. And that's

  1055. the key to

  1056. God's

  1057. presence.

  1058. Forgiveness

  1059. and His

  1060. righteousness.

  1061. righteousness.

  1062. And that's

  1063. the key to

  1064. worship.

  1065. He doesn't

  1066. ask us to

  1067. try and

  1068. feel, you

  1069. know, feel

  1070. we've got

  1071. access.

  1072. He asks us

  1073. to believe

  1074. that it's a

  1075. fact.

  1076. And He

  1077. invites us to

  1078. come to

  1079. Him by

  1080. faith.

  1081. He has

  1082. given us

  1083. the key, as

  1084. it were, and

  1085. that key is

  1086. Jesus.

  1087. Hebrews 10,

  1088. 19 doesn't

  1089. say, since we

  1090. have confidence

  1091. to enter by,

  1092. you know, how

  1093. well we've been

  1094. doing as a

  1095. Christian this

  1096. week.

  1097. It says, since

  1098. we have

  1099. confidence to

  1100. enter by the

  1101. blood of

  1102. Jesus.

  1103. In other

  1104. words, it's

  1105. nothing to

  1106. do with how

  1107. well or

  1108. badly we've

  1109. been doing.

  1110. It's entirely

  1111. to do, completely

  1112. to do, with

  1113. Jesus' death.

  1114. That's what

  1115. makes us

  1116. acceptable to

  1117. Him as we

  1118. are.

  1119. So what does

  1120. Abel's faith say

  1121. to us tonight?

  1122. Well, if you're

  1123. not a believer,

  1124. it says, come to

  1125. God.

  1126. Not with your

  1127. own works, not

  1128. in your own

  1129. effort, but

  1130. trusting in the

  1131. sacrifice of

  1132. Jesus Christ.

  1133. Come to God, not

  1134. with your own

  1135. merits, but

  1136. pleading the

  1137. blood of

  1138. Jesus.

  1139. Come by faith

  1140. in the one

  1141. whose sprinkled

  1142. blood still

  1143. speaks a

  1144. better word

  1145. than the

  1146. blood of

  1147. Abel.

  1148. And if

  1149. you're a

  1150. Christian, it

  1151. says, hold

  1152. fast to your

  1153. faith.

  1154. Even when it

  1155. leads through

  1156. the valley of

  1157. suffering, God

  1158. will vindicate

  1159. you.

  1160. To the

  1161. weary and

  1162. the struggling,

  1163. it says, your

  1164. voice like

  1165. Abel's will

  1166. not be

  1167. silenced.

  1168. Your faith

  1169. will endure

  1170. beyond the

  1171. grave.

  1172. And so the

  1173. invitation then

  1174. is to join

  1175. this great

  1176. cloud of

  1177. witnesses we

  1178. see in

  1179. Hebrews 11,

  1180. offering to

  1181. God the

  1182. sacrifice of

  1183. faith, trusting

  1184. in the blood

  1185. of the Lamb

  1186. who was

  1187. slain.

  1188. By God's

  1189. grace, may it

  1190. be true of

  1191. us, that

  1192. even when

  1193. we're like

  1194. Abel long

  1195. gone, our

  1196. faith like

  1197. Abel's of

  1198. old will

  1199. still speak

  1200. and point

  1201. others to

  1202. the God

  1203. who is

  1204. faithful

  1205. forever.

  1206. Let's pray.

  1207. God, our

  1208. Father, we

  1209. thank you for

  1210. your rich

  1211. mercy and

  1212. grace.

  1213. we thank

  1214. you for

  1215. your great

  1216. love for

  1217. us in

  1218. the Lord

  1219. Jesus

  1220. Christ.

  1221. We thank

  1222. you for

  1223. the shed

  1224. blood of

  1225. our Savior.

  1226. We thank

  1227. you that it

  1228. speaks to

  1229. us a better

  1230. word than

  1231. the blood

  1232. of Abel.

  1233. Lord, receive

  1234. our worship

  1235. this evening

  1236. as we

  1237. offer

  1238. ourselves to

  1239. you in

  1240. faith and

  1241. trust,

  1242. confident not

  1243. in ourselves

  1244. but in

  1245. Jesus Christ,

  1246. our great

  1247. and mighty

  1248. Savior, and

  1249. in whose name

  1250. we pray.

  1251. Amen.
