  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the

  11. types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Father, we ask that you would continue to gently but deeply pour out the Holy Spirit upon us.

  13. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would move very deeply in us, that we might know that we are in

  14. your presence, that you are a great God, that Jesus is a great Savior, able to save all who put their

  15. faith and trust in Him, that you will help us to grow in knowing that the gates of hell will not

  16. prevail against your church, and that even if we are weak, you are strong. So Father, we ask that you

  17. would do a gentle but powerful work in our hearts this morning, bringing your word home to us in a

  18. deep way. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen. Please be seated. So a couple of years ago, probably

  19. more than a couple of years ago, I was taking the cab to the airport early morning, and I was going to

  20. some pastors' conference. And this is a different cab conversation than last Sunday's sermon, just in

  21. case you're wondering. The cab driver asked me why I was going to the airport so early where I was

  22. going. I told him I was going to Vancouver. I told him, he said, oh, why? I said, I'm going to a

  23. pastor's conference, meet with other pastors. And he looked at me through his mirror, and he started to

  24. pepper me with some standard Muslim critiques of Christianity, about the Bible being corrupted,

  25. and a few other things like that. And I'd had a bit of experience in handling some of those things.

  26. I was able to parry them, you know, give some answers. And then he sort of paused, especially

  27. after one of them when he talked about the Bible. And I said, well, that's actually not correct.

  28. Anyway, he paused, and I said, so I take it you're a Muslim. I said, are you a practicing Muslim? He said,

  29. I was a very, very devout Muslim for quite a few years. But then a couple of years ago, I realized

  30. that nothing written in the 7th century can have anything relevant to life today. Sort of interesting

  31. that he was trying to get me to stop being a Christian. That's what he said, nothing written in the 7th

  32. century can have any relevance to life today. And then he told me this other little detail.

  33. He said, when I said that to my mom, she's still sad over it, because I live a different way now.

  34. The reason I mention this is it's, as you know, there's many, there's always been people who walk away

  35. from the Christian faith. And one of the things which contributes to people walking away from the

  36. Christian faith is the great disconnect between what we do on a Sunday morning, where what we do when we're

  37. with our Christian friends, and what happens when we walk out the door. And there's ways of,

  38. talking about what it means to be a Christian, and there's ways of looking at the Bible,

  39. that are all, they can make us feel very comfortable, and they can make us feel very safe.

  40. And by the way, I like people feeling comfortable. I like feeling comfortable.

  41. But if we talk about things in certain type of way, almost ignoring how the world, how the doors out,

  42. people on the other side of those doors, how they would look at the same text.

  43. If we only talk about it in here with our in-house language, and never sort of connect what's outside

  44. that door with what's going on inside, it will make it harder to be a Christian.

  45. And in fact, it could even end up leading you to the conclusion that nothing written in the,

  46. in this case, first century, has anything to say to life in this century.

  47. So one of the things you can pray for me is that week by week, when I try to open the word,

  48. and when other people like Steve open the word, that we'll be, we want to have the two worlds come

  49. together. Because the fact of the matter is, Jesus really is the hope of the world.

  50. There is no other hope. He is the hope of the world.

  51. So let's look at this text in light of what I've just said, because I think you'll see why I brought

  52. this up as an analogy. So if you turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 13, Luke chapter 13, and by the way,

Luke 13 chapter mention Luke 13 chapter mention

  53. I can't see what you're seeing on the screen. So if those of you who are watching this, maybe it's a

  54. sermon later, our service got delayed earlier because we were having trouble with pro-presenter.

  55. So I don't know if periodically you're just going to see a big pro-presenter advertisement rather

  56. than me when I preach, and that's just, we'll fix the glitch next week. That's all I can say.

  57. Anyway, Luke chapter 13, I'm sorry, Acts chapter 13, not Luke, Acts chapter 13, sorry.

Luke 13 chapter mention Acts 13 chapter mention Acts 13 chapter mention

  58. You see, I'm going to talk about sorcery. All sorts of things start to go wrong, you know,

  59. but it won't work, by the way. Christ is one, and we all know the end of the story.

  60. So Acts chapter 13, and here's, and actually before I go any further, you know, here's the

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  61. thing that the text is going to be about today, and you'll see why I'm using this as an analogy

  62. and example at the beginning. What we're looking at today is the first true missionary journey.

  63. The first true missionary journey. So up until now, the book of Acts is an eyewitness-based

  64. history of the first 30 or so years of the Jesus movement, and it was written while eyewitnesses

  65. were still alive to critique it, and up until now, obviously there's been the Gospels making

  66. big jumps out of the Jewish community into the Samaritan community, out of the Jewish community

  67. into the pagan world. It's left Jerusalem. The story's going to take place in Antioch. Antioch's

  68. the third most important city of the Roman Empire at that particular time. It's a very,

  69. very important city. The third biggest as well. And so the Gospel's been doing this, but it's

  70. in a sense all been done informally. People leaving and gossiping the Gospel. I can't remember who

  71. invented that phrase. It wasn't me, but gossiping the Gospel. But what we're going to look at today

  72. is the first missionary endeavor, where there's a conscious decision made to send missionaries

  73. out, and with financial and prayer support, the very, very first time. So here's the problem.

  74. Outside the door. Outside the door, we learn to decolonize our minds. That's what they want to teach

  75. you in school, don't they? The problem in the world is that there's been this terrible movement

  76. of colonization. There's been these terrible, terrible people called missionaries. No offense,

  77. I know there's at least one missionary in the room. No offense to you, but that's how the world speaks

  78. about missionaries. Missionary activity, in principle, is wrong. It's narrow-minded, implying

  79. that Jesus is the only way. It, in fact, is trampling on the indigenous and other types of spiritualities

  80. which exist in the world, and it tramples on them, and it's a form of colonizing which we need to rid

  81. ourselves of if we want to flourish. That's what they say out there, right? Tell me I'm wrong. Well,

  82. maybe not right now, but later on. Send me an email. But that's how the world understands this,

  83. and so here we are looking at a text. Christians, at least orthodox Bible-believing Christians,

  84. think missionaries are good guys. Out there, they think missionaries are bad guys. So we have to read

  85. the text putting those two things together, putting those two things together. So how does this story

  86. go? And we'll talk about it a little bit more as we get into it to see the power of the story.

  87. And it begins in chapter 13, verse 1. It goes like this. Now there were in the church at Antioch

  88. prophets and teachers. It's the only place in the New Testament where it talks about the church being

  89. led by prophets and teachers. Nothing else is said about it. It's usually presbyters or elders

  90. that are in charge of churches. Nobody knows why, but that's just the term that's used. And when it says

  91. the church in Antioch, we can't think of it, nothing personal against my Baptist friends, we can't think

  92. of it like Baptists think of it. They wouldn't have had, there would have been way more Christians in this

  93. room would hold, and there weren't many houses with rooms this big. So it would have been a whole pile of

  94. churches. It would have been more like a community of local churches. So when they're using, a lot of times in the

  95. New Testament, when they use words like the church in a city, what you really need to think of is

  96. there's a whole lot of church, small churches, but there, and each one of them is a church, but the

  97. bigger group is also a church, okay? Just so you understand what's going on. So there's a group of

  98. people looking over the, all of the, in a sense, the Christian movement in Antioch. They're called

  99. prophets and teachers, back to the text, and here's the names of the five of them. There's five of them.

  100. Now, there's lots of interesting things which are going on in here, but I want to give you, and I

  101. apologize. I thought I had, I thought I had made these points to send to Clara, and then I discovered

  102. that I hadn't written them down and sent them to her in advance. So there's no point up on the screen.

  103. That's all on me, but here's a big idea, and it's a big idea for all of the book of Acts, and it's a big

  104. idea in terms of how you're going to understand why missionaries are a good thing, Christian missionaries

  105. are a good thing. What Jesus did to save you is not narrow because it is cramped and weak. It is narrow

  106. by being utterly unique and utterly huge. I'll say it again. What Jesus did to save you is not narrow

  107. because it is cramped and weak. It is narrow by being utterly unique and utterly huge. You know what

  108. the best example of it is? It would be as if people say it's awfully narrow-minded to think that this

  109. solar gap, this solar, this solar system should only have one sun. You'd go. I mean, if you even said

  110. something like that, it would mean you don't know anything at all about physics or astronomy or anything

  111. like that. If you added a second sun, you wouldn't have our solar system. Everything would end.

  112. And the fact of the matter is, just having one sun for our solar system, as I said, it isn't a problem.

  113. There's a really interesting book that just came out, the 20th anniversary edition. I haven't read the

  114. book, but I've watched two very long interviews about the book. It's called The Privileged Planet,

  115. written by, I can't remember what the first guy's scientific specialty was. The other one is an

  116. astronomer. It sounds like a fascinating book, and they've rewritten it or updated it for the 20th

  117. anniversary of it. But the fact of the matter is, is the sun is utterly unique and utterly huge and

  118. everything our solar system needs. And that's the same claim that's been made by Christians about the

  119. gospel. That what Jesus did for us on the cross is like to the human race what the sun is to the solar

  120. system. It's utterly unique and it's utterly huge and it provides everything that's needed for our

  121. solar system to thrive and for us to live and thrive. Not narrow and cramped. I mean, you just think about

  122. it for a second. This is the fundamental Christian claim. This is, you know, later on it's going to talk

  123. about how Paul goes everywhere talking about the Word of God and all, and that's a short form in a sense for

  124. saying that what he does is he talks about the Word made flesh by opening the Word of God. So he opens

  125. the Word of God to talk about the Word made flesh. And that all gets you that the message of the

  126. gospel is that God, the Son of God, has done something absolutely huge. That the Father, the Son, and the

  127. Holy Spirit, three persons, one God, a union of love and fellowship and communion, and they look at the

  128. human race, they look at human beings made in the image of God, and they see that we have gone completely

  129. and utterly astray. That while we do some good things at the very, very center of who we are, we think that

  130. we can all individually be the sun at the center of a solar system. And that, of course, just constantly

  131. causes chaos and messes up families and relationships and churches and governments and communities and

  132. nations because you can't have everybody being the sun with all the planets revolving around them. If

  133. Louise and I both think we're the sun, we are always going to be in conflict. And so that God, the Father,

  134. God, the Son, God, the Holy Spirit, they look down at human race, they see that there is this huge need,

  135. they see that we cannot save ourselves from this. And so God does a rescue mission. God, the Father,

  136. God, the Son, God, the Holy Spirit, three persons, one God, a union of love, a communion of love,

  137. they do something to rescue us. And God, the Son of God, sets aside his glory, sets aside his splendor,

  138. sets aside his prerogatives of God, sets aside his using the power of God, but still remains God and

  139. takes into himself our human nature and descends, descends into becoming a zygote in the womb of Mary.

  140. What a remarkable idea. What a remarkable story. He humbled himself to become a zygote. And as a zygote,

  141. he then goes through the normal nine-month gestation period that human beings go through. He goes through a

  142. normal birth. He has a mother and a father. He eventually has brothers and sisters. He has

  143. cousins and nephews. He lives in a town. He works with his hands, and he learns language. He works

  144. with his hands in his father's business. He has to bury his dad by the time his ministry begins. He

  145. spends this three years of teaching and letting people know that the promises, the ancient promises

  146. that God had been making for thousands of years, that he would send a deliverer, that he is

  147. that answer to those promises, that God has kept his word. He lives a completely human life. He suffers

  148. the trials and temptations that we suffer, only he doesn't sin. And then he goes and willingly allows

  149. himself to die on a cross. And if you go and you read the gospel stories, it's so completely and utterly

  150. mind-boggling. It's something which should gobsmacked you, that the one that if those ancient eyewitness

  151. biographies are true, and they claim to be eyewitness biographies written when eyewitnesses were still

  152. alive, the man who could calm the sea, the man who could walk on water, the man who could heal

  153. the sick, the man who could raise the dead, allows himself to be captured. And it is not the nails that hold him

  154. to the cross. It is his love for you and me that holds him to the cross. And he dies in my place and in your

  155. place to reconcile us to God. And he takes all there is to taste of death. He's buried. He's put in a tomb.

  156. So this descent, God, the Son of God, his descent to being a zygote, his descent to human life, and his

  157. deeper descent into tasting all there is to taste of death. He descends and he descends and he descends

  158. all to save you. And then there is the ascent. On the third day, the stone is pushed away from the

  159. grave, not by any human power, but by the power of God. The grave clothes are left behind. Jesus rises

  160. physically from the dead, and his body is never found. And over the next 40 days, he appears alive

  161. to many people in many places in many ways to show that he is completely and utterly alive, that he has

  162. defeated death. He has tasted all there is to taste of death. He does not have a near-death experience.

  163. He is not like people that we might know who die, who enter into the place of dead and come to this

  164. side of death, only to have to die again. He tastes all there is to taste of death. He emerges on the

  165. far side of death. Death is now defeated, and that which causes death, which is a rebellion against God,

  166. our desire to be the Son in every human relationship, that is completely and utterly defeated.

  167. The price has been paid. Our sins are forgiven, and he ascends into heaven, and this whole mighty act of

  168. God to save us, his descent, his ascent, and of course we have his promise of the coming again. And that

  169. is utterly unique and utterly huge. And it is huge enough for every human being.

  170. Now why am I saying that at the beginning of the story? Well, not only because you need to remember

  171. this throughout the entire rest of the book of Acts, but you already see the hugeness of it to broach

  172. and break all sorts of social and racial and language categories. If you just look at the five names here,

  173. this is where you get it from. Look at the names again. Verse 1. Who's Barnabas? Barnabas is a rich

  174. land-owning Jewish man who becomes a Christian. Who is Simeon? Simeon, who is called Niger, he's somebody

  175. from Africa. He's black. These are the leaders of the church. How the gospel is huge enough to affect a person

  176. who is from Africa, sub-Saharan Africa we would now call, and he's also someone who is, somebody is already

  177. there who's a rich Jewish man, Lucius of Cyrene. Do we have any Syrians present? He's a Syrian.

  178. And then we have Manan, a member of the court of Herod the Tetrarch. Herod the Tetrarch was not a

  179. Jewish man, but we have somebody who is of a very type of secular, rich, powerful Jewish family who has

  180. become a Christian. And then last of all is mentioned Saul, who we now know primarily is the name of Paul.

  181. And we now know in hindsight how important a person Paul is, but back then he lost everything by

  182. becoming a Christian. There's evidence from his letters that he was completely and utterly

  183. disinherited and lost all contact with his family when he gave his life to Christ.

  184. And in the ancient world he is poorer than poor.

  185. What Jesus did for us on the cross is big enough to encompass this very highly educated but now

  186. impoverished man, a wealthy man, a person with connections to the court, somebody from Syria,

  187. somebody from sub-Saharan Africa. And that's the leadership of the church.

  188. See, what Jesus did is huge. What he has done for us is sufficient for every sort of human being.

  189. Some other time, because it's going to come up again, we'll talk a little bit about how it is,

  190. but you'll see that what happens is in this part that we just read is that the Holy Spirit propels

  191. them to begin this missionary journey. And if you look again at just verse 3,

  192. then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. You see, there's a very

  193. conscious, there would have been financial provision, and there would have just been their blessing,

  194. and there would have been their prayer support, they would have been pledging their ongoing

  195. koinonia with them in this very, very first missionary journey. And now we get the account

  196. of the beginning of the Christian missionary encounter with the pagan world. I'm going to ask you

  197. once again, friends, brothers and sisters, could you pray, would you join me in praying that God would

  198. in his kindness empower the Christian church today to have a new missionary encounter with Canada?

  199. Pray that God will have mercy on our nation and allow us to have a new missionary encounter with

  200. our land. So what happens? Well, this is even a bigger problem, this next bit that I'm going to go to.

  201. It's going to show, yeah, I think hopefully you can get to see, I'm going to talk some other week a bit

  202. more about why it's completely reasonable to believe that Jesus is the only way. But you'll see here the

  203. fundamental Christian claim. It's going to be torn out time and time and time again. The gospel is not

  204. narrow because it's weak and cramped. It's utterly unique and utterly huge and utterly all that anybody needs.

  205. Well, here we go with this very first story. Look at what happens, verse 4.

  206. So being sent out by the Holy Spirit,

  207. being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia

  208. and from there they sailed to Cyprus. Seleucia is a port

  209. and they sailed to Cyprus.

  210. When they arrived at Salamis, which is the port in Cyprus,

  211. they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jewish people

  212. and they had John to assist them. And just an aside, if you go reading a little bit earlier,

  213. you'll see that John is the person we primarily know of as Mark.

  214. And he's the one who wrote the gospel of Mark.

  215. Okay, so they had John to assist them.

  216. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos,

  217. and just pause there,

  218. in the original language it implies that they didn't just sort of go for a trip,

  219. like a hike,

  220. that they went and they preached as they went,

  221. told people about Jesus.

  222. So verse 6 again,

  223. when they had gone through the whole of the island as far as Paphos,

  224. they came upon a certain magician.

  225. Now, it's a bit of an unfortunate translation in the ESV.

  226. I think a couple of times I said,

  227. sometimes the ESV is a bit too precise.

  228. And if you look, there's another sense of magician.

  229. But the better word,

  230. and I'm going to say this when I read it from now on,

  231. it's a better word is to say sorcerer.

  232. So they're not talking about a person who'd get a show at Las Vegas.

  233. They're talking about a person who deals with dark powers,

  234. who deals with potions and rituals and draws down,

  235. claims to draw down,

  236. and does powerful forces,

  237. which we would understand to be demonic,

  238. and has potions and spells,

  239. and gives power to amulets and all of that stuff.

  240. So I'll read it again.

  241. They came upon a certain sorcerer,

  242. a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.

  243. That means he's called himself a prophet.

  244. He calls himself the son of salvation.

  245. And he was with the pro-council,

  246. and the pro-council is the head of a Roman province.

  247. So he's a very big deal.

  248. And he was with,

  249. and when it says here he was with,

  250. it means that he's part of his team of advisors.

  251. He's a key advisor.

  252. So Bar-Jesus claims to be a prophet,

  253. and claims to be a son of salvation.

  254. He is a sorcerer as well,

  255. and he's one of the key advisors to Sergius Paulus.

  256. And then it continues,

  257. a man of intelligence,

  258. who summoned Barnabas and Saul,

  259. and sought to hear the word of God.

  260. Now just sort of pause here for a second.

  261. There's a couple of things that we need to do

  262. to understand what's going on in this story,

  263. and to be able to experience the story emotionally.

  264. So first I'm going to give like another point,

  265. a bit of a bigger point,

  266. which I wish it was up,

  267. but I forgot to email it.

  268. In a sense,

  269. one of the things that's at the heart of this whole story

  270. is that God calls us to go in weakness

  271. to an upside-down world

  272. with demonic opposition

  273. that has, you know,

  274. an upside-down world

  275. that has demonic opposition to us.

  276. I'd have to word it better.

  277. Go in weakness to an upside-down world

  278. with demonic opposition,

  279. and bear witness to Jesus

  280. in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  281. That's in a sense the message.

  282. Now why do I say it's an upside-down world?

  283. Once again,

  284. think of the difference between us

  285. and when you go through the door.

  286. How do we start to enter into this?

  287. Well, here's the first one.

  288. Imagine you get invited to a party

  289. in your neighbourhood,

  290. maybe with your work.

  291. You know, maybe you work

  292. for some social media network,

  293. maybe you work on Parliament Hill,

  294. maybe you work for the Civil Service.

  295. Maybe it's just a neighbourhood party,

  296. and you get invited to a party,

  297. and you happen to go into the party

  298. around the same time,

  299. or just a little bit

  300. before two other people who come in.

  301. And they don't come in together.

  302. Two, let's say, we'll just say them,

  303. two men come in,

  304. one after the other.

  305. They're about the same age.

  306. And you're just sitting there having a drink,

  307. or standing there having a drink,

  308. and you can sort of overhear what happens.

  309. People come up,

  310. and they start to have conversations.

  311. And this,

  312. we'll do this one over here.

  313. This fellow over here,

  314. says to people,

  315. and they ask him who he is and what he does.

  316. He says,

  317. I've decided to become a missionary,

  318. and I'm going to go to an unreached people group.

  319. That means a people group

  320. that's never heard anything about Christianity.

  321. I've decided I'm going to be a missionary

  322. to go to a group of people

  323. who've never heard of Jesus at all.

  324. Okay?

  325. The other person says,

  326. they ask him what he does,

  327. and he says,

  328. I'm a sorcerer.

  329. Now, who's going to have

  330. the interested crowd around him?

  331. If this guy has a crowd around him,

  332. it will be because people want to challenge him

  333. for his colonizing,

  334. imperialistic,

  335. narrow-minded,

  336. backwards,

  337. ignorant,

  338. knuckle-dragging,

  339. behavior,

  340. and beliefs.

  341. People for that guy,

  342. they might be a bit amused,

  343. but most of them,

  344. they'll be pretty interested in it.

  345. What do you do for sorcery?

  346. Does it work?

  347. Like,

  348. oh, could you tell me some spells?

  349. That's the real,

  350. that's the world we're going out to.

  351. In here,

  352. we think

  353. that sorcery

  354. is spiritually dangerous.

  355. because there really are occult powers

  356. that only want to hurt you.

  357. That, in fact,

  358. if you think you're manipulating

  359. these powers for your benefit,

  360. the truth is

  361. you're only being manipulated

  362. by those demonic powers

  363. for their benefit.

  364. And you are being led

  365. into greater and greater

  366. deception and weakness.

  367. That's what we believe.

  368. Out there,

  369. it's cool.

  370. And all the way through the text,

  371. you see,

  372. in a sense,

  373. what the Bible is saying

  374. is why is it that often

  375. after you've been a Christian

  376. for a while,

  377. you feel like the world

  378. is a bit of a funny place?

  379. Because the Bible wants us

  380. to understand

  381. that the world

  382. is upside down.

  383. But they don't think

  384. it's upside down.

  385. When I was in the world,

  386. I didn't think

  387. it was upside down.

  388. I thought Christians

  389. were weird

  390. and completely

  391. and utterly unattractive.

  392. But Christians think

  393. that Jesus came

  394. to turn the upside down world

  395. upside down,

  396. which is another way

  397. of saying

  398. to turn it right side up.

  399. to understand

  400. that prayer

  401. is good,

  402. casting spells

  403. is bad,

  404. that openness

  405. to the Holy Spirit

  406. is good,

  407. openness to demonic powers,

  408. and they won't call them

  409. demonic powers,

  410. they'll call them

  411. white magic

  412. and all that other

  413. type of stuff

  414. is that they're

  415. misnaming them.

  416. We're being asked

  417. by God

  418. to go to an upside down world.

  419. And if we think

  420. about it for a second,

  421. that's part of the reason

  422. why we have a bit

  423. of discomfort

  424. when we go out

  425. into the world

  426. is because,

  427. in a sense,

  428. we're talking to people

  429. who are standing

  430. upside down

  431. on thin air.

  432. And they look at us

  433. and say,

  434. why are you walking

  435. on the ceiling?

  436. And we look at them

  437. and say,

  438. actually,

  439. we're walking

  440. on the floor.

  441. Why are you standing

  442. upside down

  443. on thin air?

  444. You can see

  445. those can be

  446. difficult conversations,

  447. awkward conversations,

  448. ones that we don't want

  449. to maybe even

  450. acknowledge are there.

  451. We might want to say,

  452. well,

  453. if you sort of

  454. look at it

  455. the right way,

  456. they're not really

  457. standing upside down

  458. in thin air.

  459. No,

  460. the Bible wants

  461. to make it clear

  462. that if you live

  463. as if there is no God,

  464. that's upside down,

  465. there is a God.

  466. If you live as if

  467. you somehow

  468. are a little sun

  469. in the center

  470. of your own solar system,

  471. the fact of the matter

  472. is you're at best

  473. a moon

  474. circling one of the planets

  475. that circles the sun.

  476. And you won't actually

  477. be healthy or whole

  478. until you realize

  479. you're a moon

  480. around a planet

  481. going around the sun.

  482. You're not the sun.

  483. You'll never be the sun.

  484. You'll only start

  485. to be less anxious

  486. and more happy

  487. when you realize

  488. you're not the sun.

  489. Never will be the sun

  490. and being the sun

  491. would be bad for you.

  492. Good grief.

  493. Imagine how terrible

  494. it would be for all of you

  495. if I was God.

  496. Let me tell you,

  497. that would suck

  498. for every single one of you

  499. because I can be petty.

  500. I can be anxious.

  501. I can be filled with fears.

  502. I can be unbelievably judgmental

  503. about how people drive

  504. and how people shop in Costco

  505. as if those things

  506. really matter

  507. and all sorts of terrible things

  508. would happen

  509. if I was the sun.

  510. You should all be glad I'm not

  511. and brothers and sisters,

  512. I don't mean to offend you.

  513. I'm glad you're not God either

  514. because you would make

  515. just as big a mess.

  516. Well, no.

  517. Probably I'd make a bigger mess.

  518. No, never mind.

  519. We won't get into a mess.

  520. It's just as to who would make

  521. a worse God

  522. than either of us.

  523. So here's the thing.

  524. So the first thing

  525. about this story

  526. is to understand

  527. the dynamics.

  528. And there's the exact same dynamics

  529. that are going on here.

  530. Right?

  531. This is exactly like our world.

  532. In their world,

  533. all the smart people

  534. are fine with sorcerers.

  535. And all the smart people

  536. think the idea of God,

  537. the Son of God,

  538. of the Trinity

  539. and the only one.

  540. They all think that's wrong.

  541. It's upside down

  542. and wrong-headed.

  543. But that's where Paul

  544. has gone to speak.

  545. And the other thing

  546. about it is,

  547. we need to remember,

  548. is that now we know

  549. that Paul is famous.

  550. But in Paul's day,

  551. Paul is a nobody.

  552. And Sergius Paulus

  553. is famous

  554. and powerful.

  555. And Paul is a weak,

  556. poor person

  557. who nobody has heard of.

  558. And here's the other thing

  559. about this story.

  560. Paul is going into

  561. Sergius Paulus' place.

  562. Sergius Paulus

  563. didn't go to visit Paul

  564. where he was staying

  565. in an inn.

  566. Sergius Paulus

  567. asked Paul

  568. to come into his place

  569. where Sergius Paulus

  570. is surrounded by his buddies

  571. and his advisors.

  572. And in a moment here,

  573. we're going to see what...

  574. Well, here.

  575. Look what happens.

  576. Look what happens.

  577. This is...

  578. And then I'll tell you

  579. how to...

  580. Okay.

  581. Here's how to put it.

  582. Imagine for a second,

  583. and I'm going to be

  584. politically neutral,

  585. you've gotten invited

  586. to speak

  587. at a place

  588. that Trudeau has rented

  589. and he has Gerald Butts

  590. and Katie Telford

  591. with him.

  592. And you're going to now

  593. say these things

  594. to Gerald Butts.

  595. Politically neutral?

  596. Pierre Polyev

  597. has invited you

  598. to his place

  599. and you're going to say

  600. what Paul just says

  601. right now

  602. to Jenny Burns.

  603. Okay?

  604. Being politically neutral.

  605. Just imagine

  606. if you could go

  607. in Pierre Polyev's place

  608. surrounded by his buddies

  609. and you're going to say

  610. the following words

  611. to Jenny Burns.

  612. Or you're in a Trudeau place

  613. and you're going to say

  614. the following words

  615. to Gerald Butts.

  616. If you start to think

  617. of it in this way,

  618. you'll get nervous.

  619. Verse 8.

  620. But Eliamis,

  621. the magician,

  622. the sorcerer,

  623. Elias means

  624. wise dreamer,

  625. for that is the meaning

  626. of his name,

  627. opposed Paul,

  628. seeking to turn

  629. the proconsul

  630. away from the faith.

  631. but Saul,

  632. who was also called Paul,

  633. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  634. looked intently

  635. at LAMS

  636. and said,

  637. he looked intently

  638. at Jared Butts,

  639. he looked intently

  640. at Jenny Burns,

  641. or pick your,

  642. you know,

  643. whatever,

  644. Elon Musk's

  645. personal attendant,

  646. or I don't know

  647. who owns Facebook

  648. nowadays,

  649. whoever they're,

  650. just think of that,

  651. and he says to them,

  652. verse 10,

  653. you son of the devil,

  654. you enemy

  655. of all righteousness,

  656. full of all deceit

  657. and villainy,

  658. will you not

  659. stop making crooked

  660. the straight paths

  661. of the Lord?

  662. Paul's a nobody,

  663. and he just said it

  664. to powerful people

  665. who can just literally

  666. say off with your head,

  667. off with your head.

  668. See,

  669. God calls us

  670. to go to the upside down world

  671. that also has

  672. demonic opposition,

  673. and he calls us

  674. to bear witness

  675. to Jesus

  676. in the power

  677. of the Holy Spirit,

  678. and the point

  679. of the text here

  680. is this.

  681. The point of the text

  682. isn't that Paul

  683. is bold.

  684. The point of the text

  685. is in verse 9.

  686. But Saul,

  687. who was also called Paul,

  688. is filled

  689. with the Holy Spirit.

  690. That's the point.

  691. God uses weak people

  692. like you and me.

  693. That's the point.

  694. God uses weak people

  695. like you and me.

  696. And you never know.

  697. It might be

  698. a couple of years ago

  699. I was...

  700. Who's the guy

  701. who started

  702. the Daily Wire?

  703. Is that Ben Stein?

  704. Eh?

  705. Ben Shapiro.

  706. Ben Shapiro.

  707. That's right.

  708. Ben Shapiro.

  709. A couple of years ago

  710. when I was in Israel,

  711. it turned out

  712. that the hotel beside me,

  713. Ben Shapiro,

  714. was staying there

  715. at the same time.

  716. Because some of the people

  717. who were in the group

  718. that I was...

  719. One of the people

  720. who joined us in the group,

  721. he'd been in that hotel,

  722. and he actually was

  723. in the elevator

  724. with Ben Shapiro.

  725. So here's the thing.

  726. You nobodies,

  727. you never know

  728. when you're going

  729. to be in the elevator

  730. with Ben Shapiro.

  731. I was on Parliament Hill

  732. and once visiting somebody,

  733. I was in the...

  734. I was in an elevator

  735. with a couple

  736. of captain ministers.

  737. Like, you never know

  738. when you're going

  739. to bump into them

  740. at a restaurant

  741. or something like that.

  742. And you never know

  743. when you're going

  744. to have a conversation.

  745. And if you get a chance

  746. to bear witness to Jesus,

  747. everything within you

  748. and the devil within you

  749. is going to tell you

  750. not to say anything

  751. about Jesus.

  752. But it might...

  753. I'm not saying you should,

  754. by the way.

  755. I'm not saying you should

  756. just automatically

  757. blot it out.

  758. But it...

  759. God does things

  760. through weak people.

  761. He does things

  762. through weak people

  763. like you and me.

  764. He just asks us

  765. to bear witness.

  766. Conversion is God's business,

  767. not mine.

  768. It's his power,

  769. not mine.

  770. I mean, back in the day,

  771. Trump used to walk around

  772. when he was building

  773. one of his hotels

  774. and chat away

  775. with construction workers.

  776. Like, you get a chance

  777. to chat with Trump?

  778. Tell him about Jesus.

  779. Like, that's the astounding thing

  780. here in this story.

  781. Don't think of Paul as being...

  782. Remember, Paul's a nobody

  783. in this particular story.

  784. The Lord...

  785. The Lord...

  786. Take heart.

  787. The Lord knows

  788. that your weakness,

  789. but he is strong

  790. even in your weakness.

  791. And it's his strength

  792. which matters,

  793. not yours.

  794. And then it goes on

  795. in verse 11.

  796. And now, Peter,

  797. Paul continues.

  798. And by the way,

  799. some people think,

  800. get mixed up

  801. with Saul and Paul.

  802. So Saul is...

  803. Saul and Paul

  804. are the same person.

  805. I just met

  806. a couple of weeks ago.

  807. In fact,

  808. I think she's here again today.

  809. I met somebody

  810. who's an immigrant

  811. from China.

  812. And she told me

  813. her Canadian name.

  814. And I asked her

  815. what her Chinese name was.

  816. Right?

  817. And I have a hard time

  818. pronouncing her Chinese name.

  819. But I can pronounce

  820. her Canadian name.

  821. It's a very,

  822. very common thing.

  823. So a lot of Jewish people

  824. had pagan or Roman...

  825. They had Roman names as well.

  826. So Saul is his Jewish name.

  827. And I meant to write this

  828. in my notes.

  829. I was telling somebody

  830. just before this.

  831. I think in Greek,

  832. in the language of that time,

  833. Saul,

  834. if you just hear it said,

  835. it sounds a little bit

  836. like somebody who waddles

  837. and has diarrhea

  838. or something like that.

  839. Like it's not

  840. an attractive name.

  841. So he has a Roman name.

  842. And throughout the rest

  843. of the book of Acts,

  844. he's now in the pagan Roman world.

  845. He's always going to go by Paul.

  846. But anyway,

  847. go back to this.

  848. So verse 11,

  849. and now behold,

  850. the hand of the Lord

  851. is upon you.

  852. This is Paul speaking.

  853. And you will be blind,

  854. unable to see the sun

  855. for a time.

  856. He's speaking to Bar-Jesus,

  857. Eleamus.

  858. And immediately,

  859. mist and darkness

  860. fell upon Bar-Jesus,

  861. Eleamus,

  862. and he went about

  863. seeking people

  864. to lead him by the hand.

  865. Then the procouncil believed.

  866. Now in our English,

  867. it looks as if he believed

  868. because he saw what it heard.

  869. But what he saw,

  870. when he saw what had occurred,

  871. that made him pause.

  872. But what he was astonished by

  873. wasn't the miracle.

  874. He was astonished

  875. at the teaching about Jesus.

  876. He was astonished

  877. that God,

  878. the Son of God,

  879. would leave heaven

  880. to seek him,

  881. to save him.

  882. that's what he was astonished by.

  883. One final thing in closing,

  884. for those of you

  885. who know your Bibles,

  886. or if you were to start to read

  887. from the book of Acts

  888. at the beginning to now,

  889. you'll know that before this,

  890. there's one other time

  891. when somebody struck blind.

  892. That was Paul.

  893. And it was part of his

  894. coming to faith in Christ.

  895. So the Bible here

  896. leaves open-ended.

  897. Elymas,

  898. Bar-Jesus,

  899. comes under God's judgment,

  900. but you'll see that

  901. even in this judgment,

  902. there's an aspect of mercy to it.

  903. There's an invitation

  904. for him to pause

  905. and be astonished

  906. by what Jesus has done

  907. for him on the cross.

  908. There is a pause

  909. that leads to a hope

  910. for conversion.

  911. Now, it never tells us

  912. whether he's converted or not.

  913. And I think that's partly

  914. the art of Luke

  915. writing the book of Acts

  916. to bring before us

  917. this great message.

  918. It's repeated three times

  919. in the book of Ezekiel.

  920. And if you use the old

  921. book of common prayer

  922. from 1662,

  923. actually goes all the way

  924. back to the mid-1500s

  925. for your morning

  926. and evening prayer.

  927. I try to do that every day.

  928. It has this wonderful line,

  929. God takes no delight

  930. in the death of a sinner,

  931. but rather that they will

  932. turn from their wickedness

  933. and live.

  934. And you see this

  935. even with the sorcerer.

  936. God offers him

  937. a chance to repent

  938. and come to Christ.

  939. Let's stand.

  940. Let's stand.

  941. Our heads in prayer.

  942. Father, if we're honest

  943. with ourselves,

  944. there's people

  945. that we just think

  946. they would never

  947. become Christians.

  948. In fact, Father,

  949. if we're honest,

  950. there's people

  951. that we don't even

  952. want to have become

  953. Christians because

  954. we like hating them

  955. or being angry at them

  956. and it would mess

  957. our lives up

  958. if all of a sudden

  959. we had to call them

  960. brother or sister in Christ.

  961. And Father,

  962. you know that we're

  963. reluctant to confess that

  964. because we like to try

  965. to pretend we're pious.

  966. But Father,

  967. you know our hearts.

  968. And you know,

  969. Father,

  970. how often we measure

  971. what we do

  972. or don't do

  973. by our own strength,

  974. not knowing that

  975. you know that we're weak

  976. and that what matters

  977. isn't our strength

  978. but your strength.

  979. You are the one

  980. who is strong

  981. and mighty to save.

  982. And you know,

  983. Father,

  984. how we can feel

  985. uncomfortable

  986. being in an upside-down world

  987. beginning through the gospel

  988. and your scriptures

  989. and our fellowship together

  990. in the means of grace

  991. to start to understand

  992. how to live right-side up

  993. in an upside-down world.

  994. But we ask,

  995. Father,

  996. that your Holy Spirit

  997. would move in our lives

  998. so that we can increasingly

  999. with humble confidence

1000. and joy in the gospel

  1001. live right-side up

  1002. in an upside-down world.

1003. And even in the face

  1004. of opposition,

  1005. that in weakness

  1006. we might recognize

  1007. those opportunities

  1008. you give us

  1009. to bear witness

  1010. to Jesus.

  1011. And we thank you,

  1012. Father,

1013. that you take no pleasure

  1014. or delight

  1015. in the death

  1016. of a sinner,

  1017. that your heart is

  1018. that we will turn

  1019. from our wickedness

  1020. and live.

  1021. And we give you

  1022. thanks and praise

  1023. those of us

  1024. who are here

  1025. who are in Christ.

  1026. We thank you,

  1027. Father,

  1028. that you so moved

  1029. in our hearts,

  1030. unworthy as we are,

1031. to lead us to Christ.

  1032. And so,

  1033. Father,

  1034. we ask and thank

  1035. all these things

1036. in the name of Jesus,

  1037. your Son,

  1038. and our Savior,

1039. and all God's people say,

  1040. Amen.
