  1. I'd like us this morning to turn back to the passage that we read a few minutes ago, to Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. There's about 120 in Jerusalem and perhaps a few hundred more in Judea, Galilee, and Samaria.

  4. Today, the number of disciples of Jesus Christ is a vast, uncountable number of people all across the globe.

  5. And worship today is going on in more languages than we could count.

  6. How did it get from that situation, just the most a few hundred in Palestine 2,000 years ago, to this vast number today?

  7. Well, the answer is that it has a lot to do with what happened on the day of Pentecost.

  8. Now, Pentecost is a unique event, just as Jesus' death and resurrection and ascension into heaven are unique events in God's plan and purpose in world history.

  9. And Pentecost is also very closely bound together with Jesus' ascension into heaven.

  10. Peter talks about that in verse 33 of Acts chapter 2, which we didn't read, but there he's really explaining what is happening.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  11. And he says that Jesus has been exalted to the right hand of God, and from there he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

  12. So Jesus has been exalted, and from that place he has poured out the Holy Spirit.

  13. Also in John chapter 16, that's Jesus' message to his disciples the evening before his suffering, his crucifixion.

    John 16 chapter mention

  14. And there he says to them,

  15. Unless I go away, the counselor, and the counselor is a name for the Holy Spirit, the counselor will not come to you.

  16. But if I go, I will send him to you.

  17. So at the beginning of Acts chapter 2, we read that when the day of Pentecost came, they, that's all the disciples, were all together in one place.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  18. And the place was probably the temple.

  19. That would be the only place big enough to house the number of people that's spoken about in this chapter.

  20. And we read of four things happening.

  21. The first is wind.

  22. The second is fire.

  23. The third is the spirit.

  24. And the fourth is languages.

  25. So first of all, wind.

  26. In verse 2, we read that suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

  27. The words in both Hebrew and Greek, the two main biblical languages, the words for spirit, is the same as the word for wind or breath.

  28. So the word for spirit can mean spirit, wind, or breath.

  29. Jesus, earlier on in John chapter 3, when speaking to Nicodemus, had likened the spirit, the Holy Spirit, to the wind.

    John 3 chapter mention

  30. You can't see the wind, but you know it by its effects.

  31. We see that frequently when we see windmills.

  32. You can't see the wind, but you see the blades going round.

  33. And, of course, we see the effect of it when we turn on the lights and the fridges going and the oven and everything else that relies on electricity.

  34. We don't see the wind, but we know it by its effects.

  35. And this sound of the wind symbolizes and comes along with the coming of the Holy Spirit.

  36. And it's not a gentle breeze.

  37. It's a violent wind that blows from heaven.

  38. And the promise of the Holy Spirit is closely connected with power.

  39. Jesus, at the end of Luke, tells the disciples,

  40. I'm going to send you what my Father has promised.

  41. But stay in the city of Jerusalem until you have been clothed with power from on high.

  42. And at the beginning of Acts, Jesus says to them, again to the disciples,

  43. you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.

  44. Now, the Holy Spirit of God has been active since the beginning of creation.

  45. We read that throughout the Old Testament.

  46. Right at the beginning, the Holy Spirit is there at creation,

  47. hovering or brooding over the surface of the waters.

  48. And throughout the Old Testament, when we read of prophets and leaders being sent,

  49. so often we read of God's Spirit enabling and empowering them.

  50. But now, at Pentecost, the Spirit comes with a new and unprecedented power.

  51. And it's not just on a few select individuals who are special, but on all of God's people.

  52. That's what Peter says, quoting from Joel's prophecy,

  53. that in the last days, God will pour out His Spirit on all the people.

  54. And that is what is happening here at Pentecost.

  55. So that's the first thing, wind.

  56. The second is fire.

  57. In verse 3, they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire

  58. that separated and came to rest on each of them.

  59. I mentioned just briefly, when we were introducing the reading,

  60. that Pentecost came to be viewed and celebrated

  61. as the annual celebration of the giving of the law

  62. to the Israelites, to Moses at Sinai.

  63. And when that took place,

  64. we read in Exodus chapter 19 that Mount Sinai was covered with smoke

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  65. because the Lord descended on it in fire.

  66. And here, again, we have the Lord descending,

  67. not on the mountain, but on His people in fire.

  68. The Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is God,

  69. is the Lord, is Yahweh,

  70. and He descends on the disciples in fire.

  71. This is an appearance of God.

  72. Also, John the Baptist had said to people,

  73. he said that he was not the Messiah,

  74. but he says, I baptize you with water.

  75. This is in Luke 3.

  76. I baptize you with water,

  77. but one who is more powerful than I will come,

  78. the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.

  79. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  80. And so, what John had predicted is now taking place.

  81. The third thing that happens is that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit in verse 4.

  82. Now, there's different terms that are used here.

  83. In this verse, it's that they were all filled,

  84. or filled up with the Spirit.

  85. John the Baptist had spoken of Jesus,

  86. the one coming after him,

  87. baptizing people with the Holy Spirit.

  88. And Peter, when he quotes from Joel's prophecy a bit later on,

  89. he speaks of the Spirit being poured out.

  90. So, these are all different terms for the same thing happening.

  91. The Spirit, they're filled with the Spirit,

  92. they're baptized with the Spirit,

  93. the Spirit is poured out on the disciples.

  94. Now, the terminology of being filled with the Spirit is also used later on,

  95. particularly when the disciples have to speak up about their faith in Christ,

  96. what they have witnessed in the events of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  97. But these other terms of being baptized with the Spirit,

  98. the Spirit being poured out,

  99. are only used of this one-off experience.

  100. And we see here that they're all filled with the Holy Spirit.

  101. It's not that some are filled and not others.

  102. All of them, all the disciples, are filled with the Holy Spirit.

  103. Now, you might wonder, how does that relate to us today?

  104. Well, all those who believe in Christ,

  105. all believers in Christ,

  106. receive the Spirit, they're filled with the Spirit,

  107. when they come to faith, when we come to faith.

  108. At the end of this sort of event on Pentecost,

  109. in verse 38, Peter says to the crowd that gathered there,

  110. repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah,

  111. so that your sins may be forgiven,

  112. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  113. So basically, all who repent of their sins,

  114. all who come to faith in Jesus Christ,

  115. receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  116. Paul writes to the church in Corinth and says that,

  117. we were all baptized with one Spirit,

  118. so as to form one body,

  119. whether Jews, Gentiles, slave or free,

  120. and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

  121. Abraham Kuyper, who was a Dutch theologian,

  122. around the turn of the 20th century,

  123. used an illustration,

  124. which I guess was really apt for his own time,

  125. because places were coming onto,

  126. you know, electricity was being spread,

  127. and places were coming onto the grid,

  128. and he used the illustration of a whole city

  129. being put on the grid, the electricity grid,

  130. so power is given to the whole city,

  131. so that's like Pentecost.

  132. But then, in sort of subsequent days, weeks, months,

  133. outlying villages,

  134. and even individual houses

  135. are linked up to the electricity grid,

  136. and that is like what happens when we today come to faith.

  137. If you as an individual,

  138. when you put your trust in Jesus Christ,

  139. it's like you're linked up to the grid.

  140. You receive the power of the Holy Spirit,

  141. the Holy Spirit works in your life,

  142. you are filled with the Spirit,

  143. when you come to faith in Jesus Christ.

  144. And then the fourth thing that happens is languages.

  145. In verse four,

  146. that they began to speak in other tongues or languages

  147. as the Spirit enabled them.

  148. So this is a miracle of speaking.

  149. It's not a miracle of hearing,

  150. it's a miracle of speaking.

  151. They actually spoke in many different languages.

  152. It was a sudden, miraculous ability to speak in languages

  153. that they had never previously learned.

  154. These are human languages,

  155. languages spoken by different ethnic groups,

  156. and it's the Spirit,

  157. the Holy Spirit,

  158. that enables them to do this.

  159. Now, the following verses sort of explain this a bit more.

  160. In verse five, it says that

  161. there were staying in Jerusalem,

  162. God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.

  163. And they were there for the festival,

  164. the Feast of Pentecost.

  165. Many Jews who were sort of scattered around the world

  166. would retire to Jerusalem

  167. to live out the rest of their days there

  168. in the Holy City.

  169. And also, people went on pilgrimage.

  170. People went as pilgrimage,

  171. particularly at festival time,

  172. to Jerusalem.

  173. And in verse six, we read that

  174. when they heard this sound,

  175. a crowd came together in bewilderment,

  176. because each one heard

  177. their own language being spoken.

  178. So these people who had come to Jerusalem,

  179. they would speak the language

  180. of the place they had grown up in.

  181. Probably many of them didn't have much Aramaic,

  182. which was the local language in Jerusalem.

  183. Then in verse seven, we read that

  184. utterly amazed, they asked,

  185. aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?

  186. Then how is it that each of us hears them

  187. in our own native language?

  188. Galilee was not known as a place of learning.

  189. It had a reputation for kind of being out

  190. in the sticks, being a rural backwater.

  191. There was no way that these Galileans,

  192. of all people,

  193. could know all these different languages,

  194. some of which came from very far away.

  195. In fact, we've got a slide with a map.

  196. Can we have the next slide?

  197. Yeah, I don't know how clearly you can see that,

  198. but it's got the names of the different places

  199. just scattered around the Mediterranean

  200. and the Middle East.

  201. So, and Luke lists them in verse nine.

  202. Pardians, Medes, Elamites,

  203. residents of Mesopotamia, Judea,

  204. and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

  205. Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt,

  206. parts of Libya near Cyrene,

  207. visitors from Rome,

  208. both Jews and converts to Judaism,

  209. Cretans and Arabs.

  210. We hear them declaring the wonders of God

  211. in our own languages.

  212. Now, for those of us,

  213. probably the majority here,

  214. whose first language is English,

  215. it's probably hard for us just to imagine

  216. how amazing this was

  217. because almost everywhere you can go in the world,

  218. you will find some people at least

  219. who will know at least a bit of English.

  220. But imagine a Gaelic speaker

  221. traveling to Pyongyang,

  222. the capital of North Korea.

  223. And there they encounter

  224. a rural North Korean peasant farmer

  225. getting up in the public square

  226. and addressing them in perfect Gaelic.

  227. And there you get a bit closer

  228. to what's happening here.

  229. But it's not just one language,

  230. it's in loads of different languages

  231. that people hear,

  232. the apostles, the disciples,

  233. speaking to them

  234. the wonders of God

  235. in those languages.

  236. So, Peter goes on to

  237. relate these events

  238. to Joel's prophecy

  239. of the last days

  240. when God would pour out

  241. his spirit on all people.

  242. But there's another

  243. Old Testament passage

  244. which is not referenced explicitly,

  245. but I think is in the background here.

  246. And I think Luke hints at it.

  247. That's Genesis chapters 10 and 11.

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  248. The list of different nations

  249. in verses 9 to 11.

  250. Maybe Luke is kind of echoing

  251. the list of nations

  252. that is given in Genesis chapter 10.

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  253. After the flood at the time of Noah,

  254. it just recounts how different nations

  255. emerged from Noah's descendants

  256. and spread out across the globe.

  257. And then in Genesis chapter 11,

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  258. we read of the Tower of Babel.

  259. Let me just read that to you.

  260. This is Genesis 11 from verse 1.

  261. Now the whole world had one language

  262. and a common speech.

  263. As people moved eastward,

  264. they found a plain in Shinar

  265. and settled there.

  266. They said to each other,

  267. come, let's make bricks

  268. and bake them thoroughly.

  269. They used brick instead of stone

  270. and bitumen for mortar.

  271. And they said,

  272. come, let us build ourselves a city

  273. with a tower that reaches to the heavens

  274. so that we may make a name for ourselves.

  275. Otherwise, we will be scattered

  276. over the face of the whole earth.

  277. But the Lord came down to see the city

  278. and the tower the people were building.

  279. The Lord said,

  280. if as one people speaking the same language,

  281. they have begun to do this,

  282. then nothing they plan to do

  283. will be impossible for them.

  284. Come, let us go down

  285. and confuse their language

  286. so they will not be,

  287. so they will not understand each other.

  288. So the Lord scattered them

  289. from there over all the earth

  290. and they stopped building the city.

  291. That is why it was called Babel

  292. because there the Lord confused

  293. the language of the whole world.

  294. From there, the Lord scattered them

  295. over the face of the whole earth.

  296. So at Babel,

  297. there was a communication breakdown

  298. in judgment on the arrogant plans

  299. of that society.

  300. Pentecost

  301. is a communication breakthrough.

  302. Immediately following that account

  303. of Babel in Genesis 11,

  304. we have another genealogy.

  305. And from all those different nations,

  306. God selects one man,

  307. Abram,

  308. out of them all.

  309. And God promises that through Abram,

  310. all the families of the earth

  311. would be blessed.

  312. That's in Genesis 12, verse 3.

    Genesis 12:3

  313. That all peoples on earth

  314. will be blessed through you.

  315. And now,

  316. at Pentecost,

  317. God had begun to fulfill

  318. that promise

  319. through the death

  320. and resurrection

  321. and ascension of Jesus into heaven.

  322. Through those events,

  323. salvation

  324. for the world

  325. is achieved,

  326. is realized.

  327. And now,

  328. God sends the Holy Spirit

  329. to give power

  330. to the disciples

  331. to witness about Jesus

  332. to the ends

  333. of the earth

  334. in fulfillment

  335. of that promise

  336. to Abram

  337. that all peoples on earth

  338. would be blessed

  339. through him,

  340. through his offspring.

  341. And the sign

  342. that God gives,

  343. along with the sending

  344. of the Holy Spirit,

  345. is that now

  346. God is breaking through

  347. those barriers

  348. set up at Babel

  349. in judgment

  350. on the godless pride

  351. and arrogance

  352. of that society.

  353. God's word,

  354. his message,

  355. the good news

  356. of Jesus Christ

  357. is not just

  358. for one people

  359. or nation

  360. or language,

  361. but for all.

  362. Now,

  363. all the people there

  364. at Pentecost

  365. were Jews,

  366. either by birth

  367. or by conversion

  368. to Judaism.

  369. The gospel impacting

  370. non-Jewish nations

  371. comes later

  372. in Acts.

  373. But this event

  374. anticipates

  375. and signposts

  376. the good news

  377. of Jesus Christ

  378. going to every nation

  379. and tribe

  380. and especially

  381. language

  382. because the good news

  383. of Jesus Christ

  384. is for everyone.

  385. now,

  386. in the past,

  387. I myself have preached

  388. on Pentecost

  389. being a reversal

  390. of Babel.

  391. But that's not

  392. quite right.

  393. If it were,

  394. the apostles

  395. would have maybe

  396. declared the praises

  397. of God

  398. in their own language,

  399. in Aramaic,

  400. and everyone would have

  401. miraculously understood them.

  402. But that's not

  403. what happens here.

  404. Instead,

  405. the Spirit

  406. enables the disciples

  407. to speak

  408. in the numerous

  409. languages

  410. that were understood

  411. and represented there

  412. in Jerusalem

  413. at the feast.

  414. God does not

  415. abolish

  416. the different languages.

  417. Rather,

  418. He communicates

  419. in those languages.

  420. And that's really

  421. important for us

  422. today.

  423. There are

  424. many different

  425. religious traditions

  426. that claim

  427. that one particular

  428. language is

  429. the sacred language,

  430. the holy language.

  431. It might be Arabic

  432. or Sanskrit

  433. or Pali

  434. or Latin

  435. or Syriac

  436. or some other language

  437. that people say

  438. that is the language

  439. that God speaks.

  440. That's the sacred language,

  441. the holy language.

  442. But according to the Bible,

  443. there is no one language

  444. that God communicates in.

  445. God speaks

  446. in every language.

  447. language.

  448. Just think about that

  449. for a minute.

  450. This service

  451. today

  452. is

  453. in English,

  454. the English language.

  455. And for most of us here,

  456. that's

  457. our

  458. mother tongue.

  459. We hear

  460. the word of God

  461. read

  462. and preached

  463. in English.

  464. And we respond

  465. in praise to God

  466. in singing

  467. and praying

  468. in English,

  469. a language

  470. that didn't exist

  471. at the time

  472. of Pentecost

  473. and whose roots

  474. lie in languages

  475. spoken

  476. at the furthest

  477. corners of the earth

  478. from the perspective

  479. of Jerusalem.

  480. But the fact

  481. that we don't even

  482. think about that

  483. most of the time

  484. is really significant.

  485. It's just so

  486. normal,

  487. so natural

  488. to us

  489. because the gospel

  490. has made itself

  491. at home

  492. in the English language.

  493. And that's,

  494. of course,

  495. just as true

  496. for those of you

  497. who speak in

  498. other languages,

  499. the other languages

  500. some of which

  501. we read

  502. from earlier.

  503. And

  504. the fact

  505. that we don't

  506. even think about

  507. this most of the time

  508. is really significant.

  509. It's the work

  510. of the Holy Spirit,

  511. the Spirit

  512. of Christ,

  513. the Spirit

  514. of Pentecost,

  515. the Spirit

  516. of

  517. mission.

  518. That work

  519. that was begun

  520. here on the day

  521. of Pentecost

  522. and is

  523. manifested

  524. by this

  525. miracle of languages.

  526. And we should

  527. give thanks for that,

  528. give thanks that we

  529. can approach God

  530. in our own language,

  531. in our own mother tongue.

  532. It also

  533. tells us that

  534. the work of

  535. Bible translation

  536. is so important

  537. and so in tune

  538. with what is

  539. happening here,

  540. the work of the Spirit

  541. at Pentecost,

  542. so that everyone

  543. may read and hear

  544. the Word of God

  545. in their own

  546. language,

  547. in their own

  548. mother tongue.

  549. And hear the voice

  550. of God

  551. in their own

  552. language.

  553. 500 years ago

  554. this month,

  555. the New Testament

  556. was first published

  557. in modern English.

  558. William Tyndale,

  559. the man who

  560. translated it,

  561. labored hard

  562. on that task

  563. and he had,

  564. he suffered exile,

  565. he was exiled

  566. and in the end

  567. suffered martyrdom

  568. for his efforts.

  569. And yet what he achieved

  570. had just

  571. enormous effect

  572. on the English

  573. speaking world.

  574. And indeed

  575. that influence

  576. is still here today.

  577. Even in modern

  578. translations

  579. his influence

  580. is there

  581. and indeed

  582. in English language

  583. he has left

  584. his mark.

  585. And we should

  586. give thanks for that,

  587. that God

  588. used him

  589. to translate

  590. the Bible

  591. into our own

  592. language.

  593. And of course

  594. it's not just English,

  595. it's in countless

  596. other languages too.

  597. Just last October

  598. I was at a conference

  599. in Pakistan

  600. and I met

  601. a man there,

  602. he wasn't a Christian,

  603. he was a

  604. Shia Muslim

  605. cleric

  606. from the far

  607. north of Pakistan,

  608. a place called

  609. Baltistan.

  610. The language

  611. there is

  612. Balty.

  613. And he said,

  614. oh I've got a friend

  615. who's been involved

  616. in translating

  617. the gospel

  618. into my language,

  619. into Balti.

  620. And he tried

  621. to get him

  622. on the phone

  623. to speak to me

  624. but that call

  625. failed.

  626. But it's just

  627. amazing just

  628. to hear of that.

  629. They're in

  630. northern Pakistan

  631. in this language

  632. receiving

  633. the New Testament

  634. in their own

  635. language.

  636. And of course

  637. that's repeated

  638. again and again

  639. all across

  640. the globe.

  641. hope.

  642. I've been in

  643. prayer meetings

  644. where people

  645. have just been

  646. told, you know,

  647. pray in your own

  648. language.

  649. And there's been

  650. people from

  651. speaking Persian,

  652. Dari,

  653. Sarani,

  654. and other languages

  655. praying in those

  656. languages in that

  657. meeting,

  658. praying in their

  659. own mother tongue.

  660. And I think

  661. Pentecost tells us

  662. that Christian

  663. mission that is

  664. in step with

  665. the Holy Spirit

  666. is in no way

  667. imperialistic.

  668. That true

  669. biblical faith

  670. is not an

  671. imperialistic faith.

  672. It doesn't seek

  673. to impose on

  674. listeners,

  675. on new people,

  676. a language and

  677. a culture from

  678. outside.

  679. But the gospel

  680. makes itself at

  681. home in every

  682. language and

  683. culture that it

  684. goes to.

  685. Now, sadly,

  686. sometimes the

  687. church has not

  688. been or was in

  689. step with the

  690. Holy Spirit in

  691. that.

  692. It has imposed

  693. an outside

  694. language and

  695. culture.

  696. But the work of

  697. the Holy Spirit

  698. is to communicate

  699. in every language,

  700. in every culture

  701. on earth.

  702. God is also a

  703. God who creates

  704. and loves,

  705. and God is to

  706. bring unity to

  707. all things in

  708. heaven and on

  709. earth under

  710. Christ.

  711. Christ.

  712. But God is also

  713. a God who

  714. creates and

  715. loves diversity.

  716. Every snowflake

  717. is unique.

  718. Every acorn

  719. is unique.

  720. Every set of

  721. fingerprints is

  722. unique.

  723. And in the

  724. renewal of all

  725. things, in the

  726. new creation,

  727. we will see that

  728. diversity.

  729. In the redeemed

  730. human race,

  731. we will see not

  732. the abolition of

  733. diverse cultures

  734. and languages,

  735. but they're

  736. bringing together

  737. in their renewal

  738. and redemption

  739. in Jesus Christ.

  740. That is why one

  741. of the final

  742. visions we have

  743. in the New

  744. Testament is in

  745. the book of

  746. Revelation 7

    Revelation 7:9

  747. verse 9,

  748. where John the

  749. seer writes,

  750. After this I

  751. looked, and there

  752. before me was a

  753. great multitude

  754. that no one

  755. could count,

  756. from every

  757. nation, tribe,

  758. people, and

  759. language,

  760. standing before

  761. the throne,

  762. and before

  763. the Lamb.

  764. Amen.

  765. May God

  766. bless his

  767. word to us.
