  1. If you don't know me, my name is Alan. I'm one of the staff here at Watermark.

  2. It's an incredible joy, an incredible privilege to bring God's Word to us this morning.

  3. Before Annabelle and Catherine comes and reads the Scripture to us,

  4. I thought of just recapping a little bit.

  5. We've been going through, for about four weeks now, we've been going through 2 Samuel.

  6. And one thing we've been looking at is this David, right?

  7. David, the glorious king in his glorious kingdom, which because of sin,

  8. just feels like there's a lot of stuff happening because of the consequences of sin.

  9. Even though David repents, we see the consequences at working itself throughout the story.

  10. Now, we see him being very passive. We see him being very quiet, not bringing justice.

  11. And finally, if you remember last week, we start seeing some changes in David.

  12. More of he was going back to who he was.

  13. Now, David, we start seeing him praying a little bit, him surrendering to God last week.

  14. But what we find in the story last week was that his son, Absalom, was chasing him

  15. because there's almost like a coup, a rebellion to get rid of David

  16. so Absalom, his son, can steal David's throne.

  17. What we're going to see today is God is going to finally rescue David.

  18. God is finally going to, in many ways, bring salvation to David.

  19. And what I mean by salvation is he's going to save David.

  20. Now, it's not going to be a great story. It is a great story.

  21. But what you're going to find is that salvation, that David's deliverance,

  22. is going to come at a very deep cost.

  23. So in many ways, it is a great story. It is a very sweet story.

  24. But it ends on a very, what we call a very bitter and sweet ending.

  25. So, hey, let's listen to God's word.

  26. This is God's word. This is what's going to change our life.

  27. God's word is God in spell, speaking to us, revealing who he is to us.

  28. So let us sit under God's word.

  29. Let us receive as Catherine and Ann go.

  30. We'll read that in one.

  31. So, guys.

  32. The scripture for today comes from 2 Samuel, chapter 18, verses 1 to 5, 9 to 15, 24 to 33,

    2 Samuel 18:1–5

  33. and chapter 19, verses 1 to 8a.

  34. So do follow along on the screen in your bulletin or your own Bibles.

  35. Then David mustered the men who were with him and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.

  36. And David sent out the army, one-third under the command of Joab,

  37. one-third under the command of Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother,

  38. and one-third under the command of Ittite, the Gittite.

  39. And the king said to the men,

  40. I myself will also go out with you.

  41. But the men said,

  42. You shall not go out, for if we flee, they will not care about us.

  43. If half of us die, they will not care about us.

  44. But you are worth ten thousand of us.

  45. Therefore, it is better that you send us help from the city.

  46. The king said to them,

  47. Whatever seems best to you, I will do.

  48. So the king stood at the side of the gate,

  49. while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.

  50. And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittite,

  51. Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.

  52. And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom.

  53. And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David.

  54. Absalom was riding on his mule,

  55. and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak.

  56. And his head caught fast in the oak,

  57. and he was suspended between heaven and earth,

  58. while the mule that was under him went on.

  59. And a certain man saw it and told Joab,

  60. Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.

  61. Joab said to the man who told him,

  62. What? You saw him?

  63. Why then did you not strike him there to the ground?

  64. I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a belt.

  65. But the man said to Joab,

  66. Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver,

  67. I would not reach out my hand against the king's son.

  68. For in our hearing, the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittite,

  69. For my sake protect the young man Absalom.

  70. And on the other hand,

  71. If I had dealt treacherously against his life,

  72. and there is nothing hidden from the king,

  73. then you yourself would have stood aloof.

  74. Joab said,

  75. I will not waste time like this with you.

  76. And he took three javelins in his hand

  77. and thrust them into the heart of Absalom

  78. while he was still alive in the oak.

  79. And the ten young men,

  80. Joab's armor bearers,

  81. surrounded Absalom and struck him and killed him.

  82. At verse 24 we read,

  83. Now David was sitting between the two gates,

  84. and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall.

  85. And when he lifted up his eyes and looked,

  86. he saw a man running alone.

  87. The watchman called out and told the king,

  88. and the king said,

  89. If he's alone,

  90. there is news in his mouth.

  91. And he drew nearer and nearer.

  92. The watchman saw another man running,

  93. and the watchman called to the gate and said,

  94. See, another man running alone.

  95. The king said,

  96. He also brings news.

  97. The watchman said,

  98. I think the running of the first one

  99. is like the running of Ahimeaz,

  100. the son of Zadok.

  101. And the king said,

  102. He's a good man and comes with good news.

  103. Then Ahimeaz cried out to the king,

  104. All is well.

  105. And he bowed before the king with his face to the earth and said,

  106. Blessed be the Lord your God,

  107. who has delivered up the man who raised their hand against my lord, the king.

  108. And the king said,

  109. Is it well with the young man Absalom?

  110. Ahimeaz answered,

  111. When Joab sent the king's servant,

  112. your servant,

  113. I saw a great commotion,

  114. but I do not know what it was.

  115. And the king said,

  116. Turn aside and stand here.

  117. So he turned aside and stood still.

  118. And behold,

  119. the Cushite came,

  120. and the Cushite said,

  121. Good news for my lord, the king,

  122. for the lord has delivered you to this day

  123. from the hand of all who rose up against you.

  124. The king said to the Cushite,

  125. Is it well with the young man Absalom?

  126. And the Cushite answered,

  127. May the enemies of my lord, the king,

  128. and all who rise up against you for evil

  129. be like that young man.

  130. And the king was steeply moved

  131. and went up to the chamber over the gate

  132. and wept.

  133. And as he went,

  134. he said,

  135. Oh, my son Absalom,

  136. my son,

  137. my son Absalom,

  138. would I have died instead of you,

  139. O Absalom,

  140. my son,

  141. my son.

  142. And in chapter 19,

  143. it was told that Job,

  144. Behold,

  145. the king is weeping

  146. and mourning for Absalom.

  147. So the victory that day

  148. was turned into mourning

  149. for all the people.

  150. And for the people heard that day,

  151. the king is grieving for his son.

  152. And the people

  153. stole into the city

  154. that day

  155. as people steal in

  156. who are ashamed

  157. when they flee in battle.

  158. The king covered his face

  159. and the king cried

  160. with a loud voice,

  161. Oh,

  162. my son Absalom,

  163. Oh,

  164. Absalom,

  165. my son,

  166. my son.

  167. Then Job came into the house

  168. to the king

  169. and said,

  170. You have today covered with shame

  171. the faces of all your servants

  172. and have this day saved your life

  173. and the lives of your sons

  174. and your daughters

  175. and the lives of your wives

  176. and your concubines.

  177. Because you love those who hate you

  178. and hate those who love you.

  179. For you have made it clear today

  180. that commanders and servants

  181. are nothing to you.

  182. For today I know that

  183. if Absalom were alive

  184. and all of us were dead today,

  185. then you would be pleased.

  186. Now,

  187. therefore arise,

  188. go out,

  189. and speak kindly to your servants.

  190. For I swear by the Lord,

  191. if you do not go,

  192. not a man will stay with you

  193. this night.

  194. And this will be worse for you

  195. than all the evil

  196. that has come upon you

  197. from your mouth,

  198. from your youth until now.

  199. Then the king arose

  200. and took his seat in the gate.

  201. And the people were all told,

  202. Behold,

  203. the king is sitting in the gate.

  204. And all the people

  205. came before the king.

  206. This is the word of God.

  207. Thank you guys.

  208. Hey church,

  209. why don't we pray

  210. before we start.

  211. Father God,

  212. we come before you

  213. this morning.

  214. You're a God

  215. who's gracious and kind,

  216. who's good

  217. in all of your ways.

  218. Lord,

  219. as we sit under your word,

  220. Father,

  221. we pray,

  222. may your spirit

  223. work in our hearts

  224. to receive

  225. what you say this morning.

  226. Would you

  227. help us

  228. not just understand,

  229. but

  230. also would you

  231. change our hearts

  232. to live a life

  233. that's

  234. pleasing to you,

  235. that brings you glory,

  236. that brings you honor

  237. in all ways.

  238. Father,

  239. we pray,

  240. come do your incredible work

  241. through your word

  242. in our lives

  243. and in our church.

  244. In Jesus' name we pray.

  245. Amen.

  246. So,

  247. as you saw,

  248. that was quite a

  249. reading,

  250. wasn't it?

  251. Okay,

  252. this mic,

  253. I'm just going to move away

  254. from this mic.

  255. I wonder if how many of us

  256. have been in that kind of situation

  257. where you know

  258. what is the right thing to do,

  259. but you find it so difficult

  260. to do it

  261. because it comes

  262. with a very heavy price

  263. or a heavy cost.

  264. You know,

  265. maybe if you're a youth there,

  266. it's standing up for

  267. something that you believe

  268. is right,

  269. something that is right,

  270. but the cost is

  271. you're looked at

  272. as if you're very arrogant

  273. or ignorant

  274. or very weird.

  275. Or maybe

  276. if you're working in office,

  277. maybe if you,

  278. your boss is being

  279. very unjust

  280. to a colleague

  281. and the right thing to do

  282. is to stand up

  283. against your boss,

  284. but the cost is

  285. you might have a target

  286. on your back now.

  287. Or maybe

  288. a promotion

  289. comes your way

  290. and you know

  291. the right thing to do

  292. is reject it

  293. because that takes

  294. time away from your family,

  295. which is already tight,

  296. but the heavy cost is

  297. you're going to miss out

  298. on a higher salary,

  299. which might be,

  300. could have been helpful

  301. for your family.

  302. You see a situation

  303. where you know

  304. what is the right thing to do,

  305. you know what has to be done,

  306. but it's very difficult

  307. because of the heavy cost

  308. that comes with it.

  309. In today's story,

  310. that's what we find

  311. in David's life.

  312. David finds himself

  313. in a very similar situation

  314. and if I may,

  315. actually a much more

  316. difficult situation.

  317. So why don't we dive

  318. straight into God's word.

  319. Let's dive into God's word

  320. and the first thing

  321. you're going to see

  322. is this tension

  323. that David has.

  324. David's tension.

  325. So if you have

  326. your Bible with you

  327. or if you have

  328. the bulletin,

  329. just follow along

  330. the scripture.

  331. So verse 1 and 2

  332. in chapter 18,

  333. right?

  334. What you're going to find

  335. is this battle

  336. between Absalom

  337. and David's people,

  338. David's servants,

  339. army,

  340. that's going to start

  341. and you can see them

  342. organizing this army,

  343. thousands and hundreds

  344. and it almost feels

  345. like this,

  346. like a lot of the rings

  347. kind of final war

  348. kind of thing,

  349. right?

  350. They're marching outside

  351. and this huge,

  352. feels like,

  353. oh,

  354. something's going to happen.

  355. Something's going to go on

  356. and then you come down

  357. to verse 2

  358. and David comes

  359. and he says,

  360. hey,

  361. I'm going to join you guys

  362. as you go out

  363. in the battle.

  364. David says,

  365. hey,

  366. I'm going to go out

  367. and fight this battle

  368. with you.

  369. But verse 3,

  370. if you calm down,

  371. what do they say?

  372. Verse 3 says,

  373. hey,

  374. you shall not go out.

  375. David,

  376. you shall not go out

  377. for if we flee,

  378. they will not care about us.

  379. If half of us die,

  380. they will not care.

  381. But you,

  382. you,

  383. David,

  384. you are worth

  385. 10,000 of us.

  386. In other words,

  387. David's men

  388. really value David

  389. because it's something

  390. that they understand

  391. and they understand this,

  392. that the king

  393. is important

  394. for the kingdom.

  395. There cannot be any kingdom

  396. without this king.

  397. So David

  398. has to be alive.

  399. So,

  400. which is why,

  401. if you think about that,

  402. which is why

  403. what David says

  404. in verse 5

  405. is pretty ridiculous.

  406. Right?

  407. What does he say?

  408. He calls them,

  409. he calls the three commanders

  410. and in front of,

  411. as the army's marching on,

  412. he calls them

  413. and he says,

  414. hey,

  415. deal gently

  416. for my sake

  417. with the young man

  418. Absalom.

  419. I mean,

  420. it's like,

  421. it's like telling the doctor

  422. who's doing

  423. a cancer operation

  424. on you,

  425. telling the doctor like,

  426. hey,

  427. can you deal gently

  428. with the tumor?

  429. Like,

  430. don't,

  431. just don't fully cut it,

  432. okay?

  433. Deal gently with it.

  434. Or imagine you're going

  435. for a volleyball

  436. final,

  437. final match

  438. and then the coach

  439. calls you guys

  440. and says like,

  441. hey,

  442. deal gently

  443. with the other team,

  444. okay?

  445. Just don't play too hard.

  446. We don't want to hurt them

  447. or something like that.

  448. And that's exactly

  449. what's happening here,

  450. right?

  451. It's like,

  452. imagine you're marching

  453. up in the battle,

  454. you're marching out

  455. and the king,

  456. you hear the king say,

  457. hey,

  458. deal gently

  459. with the enemy.

  460. Like,

  461. hey,

  462. if you see them,

  463. like,

  464. yeah,

  465. you know,

  466. just let them

  467. kind of go.

  468. But the thing is,

  469. Absalom had to go

  470. in the same way

  471. the tumor has to go

  472. if the person had to,

  473. if the man had to live.

  474. Absalom was out

  475. to kill David.

  476. Absalom was not around

  477. playing.

  478. He was out

  479. to kill David

  480. and if you remember

  481. Absalom's track record

  482. of murder,

  483. there's no doubt about it.

  484. I mean,

  485. we skipped chapter 17

  486. but chapter 17

  487. is a lot about

  488. receiving counsel

  489. about how to get rid

  490. of David.

  491. How can we get rid

  492. of David?

  493. Now,

  494. Absalom was out

  495. to kill

  496. and murder David.

  497. And you see,

  498. if the kingdom of God,

  499. if this kingdom

  500. was to live on,

  501. if God's chosen king

  502. was to live on,

  503. then he needed

  504. to be alive.

  505. You cannot have

  506. Absalom around

  507. if you want the king

  508. and the kingdom

  509. to be around.

  510. So it was this tension.

  511. But,

  512. but then Absalom

  513. was not just any enemy,

  514. was he?

  515. He was not just

  516. another one

  517. of David's enemy.

  518. You see,

  519. and this is where

  520. David's tension

  521. comes in

  522. because Absalom

  523. was his son.

  524. But Absalom

  525. had to go

  526. if David

  527. was to live.

  528. But that was his son.

  529. But,

  530. but the thing is,

  531. David and Absalom

  532. didn't have the greatest

  533. father and son

  534. relationship, right?

  535. I mean,

  536. they spent like

  537. almost two years

  538. not speaking to each other.

  539. Absalom spent

  540. most of his,

  541. about four years

  542. of planning

  543. and working

  544. to kill David.

  545. Now,

  546. it's not the best

  547. father and son

  548. relationship,

  549. but nonetheless,

  550. this was David's son.

  551. And the tension

  552. was that of

  553. having Absalom

  554. to die,

  555. but the tension

  556. was David

  557. did not want

  558. that to happen.

  559. David did not want

  560. that to be sin.

  561. And this tension

  562. is something

  563. we're going to see

  564. throughout today's

  565. scripture,

  566. throughout today's

  567. word.

  568. But I want us to

  569. just sit on that

  570. for a while.

  571. You know,

  572. a situation

  573. where you know

  574. what is the right

  575. thing to do,

  576. but it's difficult,

  577. but it comes

  578. with a cost.

  579. That kind of

  580. situation.

  581. And if you think

  582. about it,

  583. whenever we are

  584. in those kind

  585. of situations,

  586. it tells us

  587. a lot about

  588. our own heart,

  589. doesn't it?

  590. In the same way,

  591. it tells us

  592. about David's

  593. affection towards

  594. his son,

  595. Absalom.

  596. I mean,

  597. the last chapter

  598. of chapter 19,

  599. it talks,

  600. I mean,

  601. Joab scolds

  602. David about that.

  603. He says like,

  604. man,

  605. you love

  606. your son,

  607. Absalom,

  608. more than you love us.

  609. We have fought

  610. and given our lives

  611. to save you.

  612. And think about

  613. our lives.

  614. Whenever we are

  615. in those kind

  616. of situations,

  617. does it not tell us

  618. about our heart?

  619. Think about

  620. that example

  621. of standing up

  622. to your boss,

  623. but it comes

  624. with the cost

  625. of having a target

  626. on your back.

  627. Maybe it tells us

  628. that our heart

  629. treasures our own

  630. comfort and security

  631. more than justice.

  632. How about

  633. for the promotion

  634. that can take away

  635. time?

  636. Maybe it tells us

  637. about our heart

  638. that we would

  639. rather love

  640. our family

  641. with money

  642. than actually

  643. spending time

  644. with our families.

  645. You see,

  646. these examples

  647. are of course

  648. very complex,

  649. right?

  650. It's more,

  651. it's not just

  652. black and white.

  653. But what I'm trying

  654. to push us

  655. to see is that

  656. whenever we find

  657. it difficult

  658. to do something

  659. that is right

  660. because it comes

  661. with a cost,

  662. it actually tells us

  663. a lot about our heart.

  664. Maybe it's something

  665. as simple as

  666. getting out of your bed

  667. to read your Bible.

  668. Maybe the cost

  669. is getting out

  670. of your bed.

  671. But does that

  672. not tell us

  673. about our heart

  674. that we would

  675. rather enjoy

  676. our comfort

  677. in our bed

  678. rather than

  679. sitting in God's

  680. word?

  681. So that's something

  682. to think about.

  683. But now coming

  684. back to the story,

  685. as we see this

  686. tension

  687. and all the people

  688. hear of David's

  689. request,

  690. they hear,

  691. hey,

  692. deal gently

  693. with Absalom,

  694. deal gently

  695. with this young man

  696. Absalom.

  697. Now what we're

  698. going to find

  699. in the next act

  700. of this story

  701. is the battle

  702. starts.

  703. The battle

  704. begins

  705. and through

  706. this battle

  707. what we're

  708. going to see

  709. is that

  710. David is

  711. going to be

  712. delivered

  713. which leads

  714. us to the

  715. second act

  716. of the story.

  717. So if you're

  718. on your bulletin

  719. look at from

  720. verse 6 onwards.

  721. Verse 6

  722. and 7

  723. it tells us

  724. about the battle.

  725. Now this battle

  726. is devastating,

  727. is brutal.

  728. About 20,000

  729. people are killed

  730. and because

  731. the battle

  732. is in a forest,

  733. the forest itself

  734. takes more

  735. life.

  736. I don't know

  737. how that was,

  738. maybe it was

  739. branches and

  740. swamps,

  741. but it's a very

  742. brutal and

  743. devastating war.

  744. And what we're

  745. going to see in

  746. this battle

  747. is that

  748. God's hand

  749. in delivering

  750. David

  751. is fully

  752. in control.

  753. God is fully

  754. in control

  755. throughout this

  756. battle.

  757. Now in the

  758. midst of the

  759. battle,

  760. what do we

  761. find?

  762. We find

  763. Absalom

  764. riding his

  765. mule.

  766. Now we must

  767. wonder,

  768. why is

  769. Absalom

  770. in the

  771. middle of

  772. the battle

  773. when the

  774. army of

  775. his enemy,

  776. King David

  777. is not even

  778. in the

  779. battlefield?

  780. Why is he

  781. there but

  782. King David

  783. is not

  784. there?

  785. And for

  786. that we

  787. got to go

  788. back to

  789. chapter 17.

  790. And if you

  791. look at

  792. chapter 17,

  793. God actually

  794. had a hand

  795. in bringing

  796. Absalom to

  797. the forest.

  798. It's not in

  799. the bulletin

  800. but if you

  801. look at

  802. 17 verse

  803. 14 it

  804. says,

  805. for the

  806. Lord had

  807. ordained to

  808. defeat the

  809. good counsel

  810. of Ahithophel.

  811. Now basically

  812. what happened

  813. was Absalom

  814. was taking

  815. counsel on

  816. how to

  817. kill or

  818. how to

  819. defeat David.

  820. And Ahithophel

  821. was this one

  822. counselor,

  823. one consultant

  824. who had the

  825. best consultant

  826. firm at

  827. those days.

  828. And he

  829. and he

  830. his counsel

  831. was basically

  832. defeated by

  833. God.

  834. But then

  835. Absalom

  836. took the

  837. counsel of

  838. another man

  839. which told

  840. him to

  841. go out

  842. into the

  843. field.

  844. You see

  845. the reason

  846. Absalom

  847. was there

  848. in the

  849. field in

  850. first place

  851. was because

  852. God

  853. had put

  854. him there.

  855. And what

  856. happens if

  857. you look at

  858. verse 9?

  859. And Absalom

  860. happened to

  861. meet the

  862. servants of

  863. David.

  864. Absalom

  865. was riding

  866. on his

  867. mule and

  868. the mule

  869. went under

  870. thick branches

  871. of great

  872. oak and

  873. his head

  874. was caught

  875. fast in

  876. the oak

  877. and he

  878. was suspended

  879. from heaven

  880. and earth

  881. while the

  882. mule that

  883. was under

  884. him went

  885. on.

  886. In many

  887. ways that

  888. looks very

  889. comical.

  890. Imagine you're

  891. out in the

  892. battlefield,

  893. you turn

  894. around the

  895. bush and

  896. boom,

  897. your enemy

  898. is there

  899. hanging on

  900. a tree.

  901. Like that.

  902. It's sad

  903. but it

  904. feels like

  905. wow,

  906. that's so

  907. much easier

  908. than I

  909. thought,

  910. right?

  911. But if

  912. you think

  913. about it,

  914. this is

  915. not a

  916. coincidence

  917. because in

  918. God's word

  919. there is

  920. no coincidence.

  921. God was

  922. very much

  923. in control

  924. because if

  925. you remember

  926. in Deuteronomy

  927. 21,

  928. it says that

  929. anyone that

  930. is hanging

  931. from a tree

  932. is cursed

  933. by God.

  934. Absalom

  935. was cursed

  936. by God.

  937. In other

  938. words,

  939. if you look

  940. at the

  941. verse we

  942. looked at

  943. chapter 17,

  944. it said that

  945. God had

  946. ordained to

  947. bring harm

  948. to Absalom.

  949. God was

  950. out to

  951. bring justice

  952. against

  953. Absalom.

  954. So we

  955. find Absalom

  956. hanging on

  957. the tree,

  958. unable to

  959. do anything

  960. and here

  961. again we

  962. see this

  963. little bit

  964. of tension,

  965. right?

  966. A soldier

  967. comes in

  968. and he's

  969. like,

  970. oh man,

  971. I cannot

  972. kill,

  973. this is the

  974. king,

  975. king said

  976. don't kill

  977. him and

  978. Joab is

  979. like,

  980. why don't

  981. you kill

  982. him?

  983. And there's

  984. this whole

  985. tension and

  986. finally,

  987. Joab comes

  988. in,

  989. the commander,

  990. he knows

  991. what needs

  992. to be done

  993. and he goes

  994. in and he

  995. takes the

  996. life of

  997. Absalom and

  998. it was done.

  999. So the

  1000. question is,

  1001. what was

  1002. done?

  1003. What did

  1004. Absalom's

  1005. death mean

  1006. for David

  1007. or for the

  1008. kingdom of

  1009. God?

  1010. So I want

  1011. us to look

  1012. at verse 19

  1013. onwards and

  1014. that's where we

  1015. find our

  1016. answer.

  1017. Verse 19,

  1018. we do not

  1019. read in our

  1020. scripture reading

  1021. but what

  1022. happens here

  1023. is,

  1024. now the

  1025. battle's

  1026. finished,

  1027. Absalom is

  1028. dead,

  1029. now who

  1030. is going to

  1031. go and tell

  1032. David the

  1033. news?

  1034. Who is

  1035. going to

  1036. go tell

  1037. David that

  1038. the battle

  1039. is won but

  1040. his son is

  1041. dead?

  1042. And there's

  1043. this whole

  1044. tension again,

  1045. right?

  1046. There's one

  1047. guy who's,

  1048. Ahimez says,

  1049. I want to

  1050. go and tell

  1051. the king.

  1052. And Joab in

  1053. all his wisdom

  1054. says,

  1055. I don't think

  1056. it's a great

  1057. idea,

  1058. it's not the

  1059. best news and

  1060. he sends

  1061. another guy but

  1062. Ahimez is

  1063. like,

  1064. no,

  1065. no,

  1066. no,

  1067. no,

  1068. I want to

  1069. go and

  1070. finally Joab

  1071. was like,

  1072. fine,

  1073. go and

  1074. Ahimez takes

  1075. a shortcut,

  1076. wins this

  1077. other guy

  1078. to tell the

  1079. news.

  1080. But what I

  1081. want us to

  1082. notice here is,

  1083. I want us to

  1084. notice the

  1085. news that

  1086. they were

  1087. bringing.

  1088. See what was

  1089. the news,

  1090. what had

  1091. actually happened

  1092. from their

  1093. mouth.

  1094. Look at

  1095. verse 19

  1096. on the bulletin,

  1097. it says,

  1098. then Ahimez,

  1099. the son of

  1100. Zadok,

  1101. said,

  1102. let me run

  1103. and carry

  1104. the news

  1105. to the

  1106. king.

  1107. And what

  1108. was the

  1109. news?

  1110. That the

  1111. Lord has

  1112. delivered him

  1113. from the

  1114. hand of

  1115. his enemies.

  1116. Now,

  1117. this is not

  1118. just a

  1119. random message

  1120. because this

  1121. is a message

  1122. that's repeated

  1123. two more

  1124. times,

  1125. in a total

  1126. of three

  1127. more times

  1128. and anything

  1129. that's repeated

  1130. in God's

  1131. word is

  1132. important.

  1133. Okay,

  1134. look at

  1135. verse 28.

  1136. 28,

  1137. he says,

  1138. again,

  1139. the news

  1140. is,

  1141. who has

  1142. delivered up

  1143. the man

  1144. who has

  1145. raised their

  1146. hand against

  1147. my lord,

  1148. the king.

  1149. Look at

  1150. verse 31

  1151. again.

  1152. The good

  1153. news is

  1154. what?

  1155. For the

  1156. Lord has

  1157. delivered you

  1158. this day

  1159. from the

  1160. hand of

  1161. all who

  1162. rose up

  1163. against you.

  1164. So,

  1165. what has

  1166. God done

  1167. for David?

  1168. God has

  1169. delivered David

  1170. from the

  1171. hand of

  1172. his enemies,

  1173. those that

  1174. have raised

  1175. their hand

  1176. against him.

  1177. Those,

  1178. they are

  1179. all defeated.

  1180. David is

  1181. saved.

  1182. David is

  1183. delivered.

  1184. Man,

  1185. that's the

  1186. great news,

  1187. isn't it?

  1188. That's the

  1189. great news

  1190. for the

  1191. kingdom.

  1192. God's

  1193. kingdom,

  1194. God's

  1195. chosen king

  1196. is saved.

  1197. I mean,

  1198. all these

  1199. people that

  1200. had to run

  1201. away because

  1202. of the

  1203. rebellion,

  1204. that had to,

  1205. as they were

  1206. running away,

  1207. being mocked as

  1208. they ran away,

  1209. being cursed as

  1210. they ran away,

  1211. being stoned as

  1212. they ran away,

  1213. being exiled

  1214. because of their

  1215. sin away from

  1216. God's kingdom,

  1217. all these people,

  1218. all this situation

  1219. is finally

  1220. over.

  1221. God has

  1222. delivered David

  1223. and his people.

  1224. But then,

  1225. it doesn't

  1226. really feel that

  1227. way,

  1228. does it?

  1229. It doesn't

  1230. feel like it's

  1231. a great and

  1232. joyful moment.

  1233. Look at

  1234. verse 28.

  1235. Ahimez comes

  1236. with the same

  1237. joyful attitude,

  1238. right?

  1239. He comes with

  1240. this like,

  1241. woohoo,

  1242. it's done.

  1243. Let's go and

  1244. tell the king.

  1245. And Ahimez says,

  1246. yeah,

  1247. God has

  1248. delivered you.

  1249. And David

  1250. asks him,

  1251. hey,

  1252. but what about

  1253. the young man

  1254. Absalom?

  1255. What happened?

  1256. And Ahimez was

  1257. like,

  1258. whoops.

  1259. And he knows

  1260. what happened,

  1261. but he tells a

  1262. lie,

  1263. right?

  1264. He says,

  1265. I don't know,

  1266. there was a

  1267. crowd there,

  1268. something was

  1269. happening,

  1270. not exactly sure,

  1271. but yeah,

  1272. I don't know.

  1273. And David

  1274. tells him to,

  1275. why don't you

  1276. stand at the

  1277. side?

  1278. The second

  1279. messenger comes

  1280. in,

  1281. David,

  1282. God has

  1283. delivered you

  1284. from the

  1285. enemies,

  1286. the young

  1287. man Absalom?

  1288. Ahimez must

  1289. have been at

  1290. the side,

  1291. like,

  1292. don't tell

  1293. him.

  1294. And he

  1295. says,

  1296. basically,

  1297. Absalom was

  1298. no more.

  1299. And then in

  1300. verse 33,

  1301. David goes

  1302. back to his

  1303. room and

  1304. he grieves

  1305. and he mourns.

  1306. Now,

  1307. I don't think

  1308. David was

  1309. shocked by

  1310. the news.

  1311. he knew

  1312. that this

  1313. was going

  1314. to happen.

  1315. If you

  1316. remember

  1317. verse 1

  1318. to 5,

  1319. the whole

  1320. army,

  1321. you cannot,

  1322. as the army

  1323. was going

  1324. out against

  1325. Absalom,

  1326. we know

  1327. that war

  1328. isn't over

  1329. until the

  1330. enemies are

  1331. defeated.

  1332. It's not

  1333. a shock

  1334. that Absalom

  1335. was going

  1336. to be

  1337. defeated

  1338. and that

  1339. his life

  1340. was going

  1341. to be

  1342. taken.

  1343. You see,

  1344. but then

  1345. still,

  1346. David,

  1347. for some

  1348. hopeful

  1349. reason,

  1350. he gives

  1351. this request

  1352. of deal

  1353. gently

  1354. with this

  1355. young man

  1356. Absalom.

  1357. But if you

  1358. think about

  1359. it,

  1360. this whole

  1361. ordeal,

  1362. this whole

  1363. thing,

  1364. David kind

  1365. of knew,

  1366. he was not

  1367. shocked by the

  1368. news,

  1369. and yet it

  1370. comes and

  1371. he's in

  1372. his grieving

  1373. and mourning.

  1374. Yes,

  1375. he was

  1376. delivered,

  1377. but then

  1378. there was

  1379. this whole

  1380. sadness

  1381. to it,

  1382. which leads

  1383. us to

  1384. our last

  1385. thought,

  1386. last act

  1387. of the

  1388. story,

  1389. which is

  1390. the cost.

  1391. If you

  1392. look at

  1393. from verse

  1394. 33 all

  1395. the way

  1396. till chapter

  1397. 19,

  1398. verse 4,

  1399. we see

  1400. David

  1401. grieving,

  1402. David

  1403. mourning.

  1404. I mean,

  1405. yes,

  1406. he was

  1407. delivered from

  1408. his enemies,

  1409. yes,

  1410. he was

  1411. allowed to

  1412. come back

  1413. into God's

  1414. kingdom now,

  1415. but

  1416. nonetheless,

  1417. the deliverance

  1418. of him

  1419. was very,

  1420. very costly.

  1421. You see,

  1422. we see here

  1423. David mourning

  1424. his son,

  1425. but maybe,

  1426. not maybe,

  1427. but perhaps,

  1428. David was

  1429. also mourning

  1430. his role

  1431. in that.

  1432. You see,

  1433. because this

  1434. whole story

  1435. is an

  1436. outworking

  1437. of the

  1438. consequences

  1439. of David's

  1440. sin.

  1441. You see,

  1442. his sin

  1443. in being

  1444. very passive

  1445. when there

  1446. was abuse,

  1447. and murder

  1448. David's

  1449. sin in

  1450. being very

  1451. passive

  1452. and not

  1453. bringing

  1454. justice

  1455. when this

  1456. was happening

  1457. among his

  1458. son.

  1459. And more

  1460. than that,

  1461. his sin

  1462. right from

  1463. the beginning

  1464. of,

  1465. with Bathsheba,

  1466. where he

  1467. took a

  1468. woman that

  1469. was not

  1470. his wife

  1471. and murdered

  1472. her husband.

  1473. And outworking

  1474. of his sin,

  1475. we see it

  1476. throughout the

  1477. story.

  1478. And look

  1479. at the end

  1480. of verse 33

  1481. in chapter 18,

  1482. he says,

  1483. would I

  1484. have died

  1485. instead of

  1486. you?

  1487. And that

  1488. seems to be

  1489. a mourning,

  1490. yeah,

  1491. both of his

  1492. son,

  1493. but also a

  1494. mourning because

  1495. of his role

  1496. in this whole

  1497. event.

  1498. Now,

  1499. this does not

  1500. mean that

  1501. Absalom was

  1502. completely innocent

  1503. and guiltless.

  1504. I mean,

  1505. Absalom had

  1506. raised his hand

  1507. against the

  1508. Lord himself

  1509. by opposing

  1510. God's

  1511. appointed king.

  1512. Right?

  1513. If you remember

  1514. the story of

  1515. David,

  1516. when he was

  1517. running away

  1518. from King

  1519. Saul,

  1520. David never

  1521. raised his

  1522. hand against

  1523. King Saul.

  1524. Why?

  1525. Why?

  1526. Because he

  1527. was God's

  1528. appointed,

  1529. anointed one.

  1530. He was God's

  1531. chosen and he

  1532. would not raise

  1533. his hand against

  1534. God's chosen,

  1535. no matter how

  1536. much injustice

  1537. he was facing.

  1538. And in the same

  1539. way,

  1540. but what we see

  1541. here is Absalom

  1542. is raising his

  1543. hand against

  1544. God's anointed

  1545. one,

  1546. which is similar

  1547. to him raising

  1548. his hands against

  1549. the Lord himself.

  1550. Not only that,

  1551. he was someone

  1552. who planned a

  1553. murder for two

  1554. years.

  1555. And after that,

  1556. he was planning

  1557. a rebellion for

  1558. four years,

  1559. put it to work

  1560. and done it

  1561. and out to

  1562. kill David.

  1563. You see,

  1564. he's not like

  1565. most people.

  1566. Most people get

  1567. angry,

  1568. they do something,

  1569. they say something

  1570. and then they

  1571. regret it.

  1572. Right?

  1573. It's very

  1574. impulsive.

  1575. But Absalom

  1576. was a type of

  1577. man who gets

  1578. angry,

  1579. who plans it

  1580. out for two

  1581. years,

  1582. holds on to

  1583. it,

  1584. and then commits

  1585. and executes

  1586. it.

  1587. In many ways,

  1588. he's a very

  1589. evil man.

  1590. Very angry

  1591. and very

  1592. out to

  1593. kill man.

  1594. And justice

  1595. has come

  1596. upon him.

  1597. But going

  1598. back to

  1599. David's

  1600. deliverance,

  1601. we still see

  1602. that it came

  1603. with a cost.

  1604. We see that

  1605. what was broken

  1606. between David

  1607. and God,

  1608. his exile,

  1609. and for him

  1610. to come back,

  1611. it came with

  1612. a cost.

  1613. But if you

  1614. think about

  1615. it,

  1616. isn't that

  1617. what life

  1618. is like?

  1619. Isn't that

  1620. reality?

  1621. I mean,

  1622. if someone

  1623. breaks a

  1624. cup,

  1625. it's going

  1626. to cost

  1627. someone to

  1628. put it

  1629. back together.

  1630. Someone

  1631. got to

  1632. spend some

  1633. time and

  1634. money and

  1635. glue and

  1636. stuff.

  1637. I mean,

  1638. even if

  1639. someone buys

  1640. you a

  1641. cup,

  1642. it's not

  1643. free.

  1644. Someone pays

  1645. the cost

  1646. for that.

  1647. It's a

  1648. reality in

  1649. human

  1650. relationship.

  1651. When a

  1652. husband cheats

  1653. on his

  1654. wife,

  1655. for there

  1656. to be

  1657. reconciliation,

  1658. there is

  1659. a cost.

  1660. The wife

  1661. pays it

  1662. by choosing

  1663. not to

  1664. think about

  1665. it,

  1666. by choosing

  1667. to forgive,

  1668. learning to

  1669. trust again.

  1670. There's a

  1671. cost when

  1672. there's a

  1673. conflicts,

  1674. when one

  1675. person has

  1676. to forgive

  1677. in the

  1678. midst of

  1679. pain.

  1680. One

  1681. person has

  1682. to pay

  1683. the cost

  1684. of saying

  1685. it's okay,

  1686. I forgive

  1687. you.

  1688. You see,

  1689. it's a

  1690. reality in

  1691. life,

  1692. it's a

  1693. reality in

  1694. human

  1695. relationships,

  1696. and it's

  1697. a reality

  1698. with God.

  1699. God cannot

  1700. just forgive

  1701. us.

  1702. It comes

  1703. with a

  1704. cost.

  1705. There is

  1706. a cost

  1707. for our

  1708. sins to

  1709. be forgiven,

  1710. and who

  1711. is going

  1712. to pay

  1713. that cost?

  1714. And in

  1715. this story,

  1716. we see

  1717. that David

  1718. were in the

  1719. wilderness,

  1720. exiled,

  1721. very symbolic

  1722. of being

  1723. exiled away

  1724. from God's

  1725. kingdom because

  1726. of sin.

  1727. what is

  1728. going to

  1729. bring them

  1730. back?

  1731. And we

  1732. see the

  1733. cost that

  1734. David goes

  1735. through.

  1736. But the

  1737. question is,

  1738. how about

  1739. for you?

  1740. How about

  1741. for us?

  1742. Who is

  1743. going to

  1744. pay the

  1745. cost of

  1746. our sins?

  1747. Who has

  1748. the capacity

  1749. to pay

  1750. that cost?

  1751. You know,

  1752. by God's

  1753. word tells

  1754. us the

  1755. wages of

  1756. sin is

  1757. death.

  1758. Who here

  1759. has the

  1760. capacity to

  1761. pay that?

  1762. Who is

  1763. pure enough

  1764. to pay

  1765. that?

  1766. Well,

  1767. if you

  1768. are in

  1769. Christ,

  1770. I want

  1771. us to

  1772. think about

  1773. this.

  1774. You and

  1775. I,

  1776. we can

  1777. stand

  1778. before a

  1779. holy God

  1780. and ask

  1781. for forgiveness

  1782. and have

  1783. the assurance

  1784. of being

  1785. forgiven and

  1786. be forgiven

  1787. because that

  1788. cost has

  1789. already been

  1790. paid by

  1791. Jesus.

  1792. You see,

  1793. when a

  1794. criminal

  1795. murders

  1796. or kills

  1797. a person,

  1798. we cannot

  1799. just say,

  1800. oh,

  1801. it's okay,

  1802. that's fine,

  1803. don't do it

  1804. again.

  1805. He has to

  1806. pay the

  1807. price.

  1808. And it's

  1809. the same

  1810. for us.

  1811. Our sin

  1812. is a sin

  1813. against God.

  1814. And the

  1815. one who

  1816. is supposed

  1817. to pay

  1818. is us,

  1819. no one

  1820. else.

  1821. But when

  1822. we come

  1823. to the

  1824. cross,

  1825. it was

  1826. not us

  1827. who pays,

  1828. but it

  1829. was God,

  1830. the one

  1831. who we

  1832. sin against,

  1833. He is

  1834. the one

  1835. who pays

  1836. the cost

  1837. of our

  1838. sin.

  1839. Isn't

  1840. that

  1841. incredible?

  1842. You see,

  1843. God was

  1844. the one

  1845. who pays

  1846. it.

  1847. In fact,

  1848. 2 Corinthians

  1849. 5 tells

  1850. us,

  1851. for our

  1852. sake,

  1853. God made

  1854. Him,

  1855. Jesus,

  1856. who knew

  1857. no sin,

  1858. to become

  1859. sin,

  1860. so that in

  1861. Him,

  1862. we can have

  1863. the righteousness

  1864. of God.

  1865. In other

  1866. words,

  1867. because He

  1868. took the

  1869. cost,

  1870. now we can

  1871. have the

  1872. righteousness

  1873. of God.

  1874. we can

  1875. be forgiven,

  1876. washed,

  1877. and have

  1878. the right

  1879. standing

  1880. before God.

  1881. Because

  1882. Jesus,

  1883. Christ Jesus

  1884. paid that

  1885. price,

  1886. paid the

  1887. cost.

  1888. Isn't

  1889. that

  1890. incredible?

  1891. Isn't

  1892. that an

  1893. amazing

  1894. grace?

  1895. In a bit,

  1896. we're going

  1897. to sing

  1898. this song,

  1899. and there's

  1900. this line

  1901. in the

  1902. song that

  1903. says,

  1904. because

  1905. the

  1906. sinless

  1907. Savior

  1908. died,

  1909. my

  1910. sinful

  1911. soul

  1912. is now

  1913. set free.

  1914. For

  1915. God the

  1916. just is

  1917. satisfied,

  1918. to look

  1919. on Him

  1920. and pardon

  1921. me.

  1922. That's

  1923. something to

  1924. really ponder

  1925. upon.

  1926. That God

  1927. will look

  1928. at Christ

  1929. and would

  1930. pardon us

  1931. and unworthy,

  1932. undeserving

  1933. sinners,

  1934. because Jesus

  1935. paid that

  1936. price.

  1937. And if

  1938. you're new

  1939. here today,

  1940. or if you

  1941. have not

  1942. really given

  1943. your life

  1944. to Christ,

  1945. this is an

  1946. incredible

  1947. invitation to

  1948. come and

  1949. receive His

  1950. love,

  1951. isn't it?

  1952. You see,

  1953. because on

  1954. the cross,

  1955. the price

  1956. has been

  1957. paid,

  1958. which means

  1959. that you

  1960. don't have

  1961. to perform,

  1962. you don't

  1963. have to

  1964. do a

  1965. thousand

  1966. good deeds

  1967. to be

  1968. accepted

  1969. by God.

  1970. You don't

  1971. have to

  1972. sort out

  1973. yourself

  1974. and get

  1975. your life

  1976. in place,

  1977. sorted,

  1978. and come

  1979. before God,

  1980. because we

  1981. can all

  1982. come before

  1983. God with

  1984. our brokenness

  1985. and sin,

  1986. because when

  1987. we give our

  1988. life to

  1989. Christ in

  1990. faith,

  1991. we can

  1992. know that

  1993. the cost

  1994. has been

  1995. paid,

  1996. and that

  1997. we can be

  1998. accepted and

  1999. forgiven.

  2000. But church,

  2001. isn't that

  2002. incredible news?

  2003. That the cost

  2004. has been

  2005. paid.

  2006. But this is

  2007. what I really

  2008. want us to

  2009. take away

  2010. today.

  2011. This is what I

  2012. really want us to

  2013. think about,

  2014. not just take away,

  2015. but really meditate

  2016. and think about

  2017. in this coming

  2018. week.

  2019. You see,

  2020. the cost was not

  2021. cheap,

  2022. it was not

  2023. cheap for David,

  2024. and it's

  2025. definitely not

  2026. cheap and

  2027. simple for

  2028. Jesus and

  2029. God.

  2030. So I want us

  2031. to take away

  2032. these three

  2033. things.

  2034. And here's the

  2035. first thing,

  2036. don't take sin

  2037. lightly,

  2038. or don't

  2039. take the

  2040. cost of

  2041. salvation

  2042. lightly.

  2043. You see,

  2044. it's so easy

  2045. for us to

  2046. forget the

  2047. cross and

  2048. take our

  2049. sin very

  2050. lightly,

  2051. isn't it?

  2052. We can have

  2053. this attitude

  2054. of,

  2055. yeah,

  2056. Jesus has

  2057. forgiven my

  2058. sin,

  2059. I can go

  2060. on my life

  2061. and do

  2062. whatever I

  2063. want.

  2064. We might

  2065. not think

  2066. that,

  2067. but how

  2068. about when

  2069. we don't

  2070. deal with

  2071. our sin?

  2072. Maybe it's

  2073. an addiction

  2074. like porn

  2075. addiction,

  2076. when we

  2077. just get

  2078. used to

  2079. it and

  2080. just make

  2081. it part of

  2082. our lives

  2083. without ever

  2084. dealing with

  2085. it.

  2086. Or maybe

  2087. it's a

  2088. conflict that

  2089. we don't

  2090. move towards

  2091. resolution and

  2092. unity in

  2093. forgiveness.

  2094. You see,

  2095. all of these

  2096. things,

  2097. we can,

  2098. it's also an

  2099. example of maybe

  2100. we can usually

  2101. go back to

  2102. our life and

  2103. have this

  2104. attitude of,

  2105. yeah,

  2106. I've got

  2107. work,

  2108. I've got

  2109. relationships,

  2110. I'm just

  2111. going to go

  2112. back my

  2113. life and

  2114. never really

  2115. think about

  2116. God throughout

  2117. the week.

  2118. Maybe it

  2119. can go days

  2120. and months

  2121. and weeks

  2122. without actually

  2123. sitting with

  2124. God.

  2125. Or days and

  2126. weeks without

  2127. actually getting

  2128. on our knees

  2129. and thanking

  2130. God for what

  2131. He has done

  2132. on the cross.

  2133. How do we

  2134. take God's

  2135. costly payment?

  2136. How do we

  2137. take God's

  2138. sacrifice for us

  2139. in our lives?

  2140. that does

  2141. come off

  2142. very sharp,

  2143. but it's a

  2144. call for us

  2145. to think about

  2146. our life.

  2147. How is our

  2148. time used?

  2149. How is our

  2150. hearts and

  2151. passions used?

  2152. What are we

  2153. so passionate

  2154. about?

  2155. What is

  2156. something that

  2157. makes our

  2158. heart beat

  2159. fast?

  2160. What is

  2161. it?

  2162. Or is it

  2163. very easy for

  2164. us to

  2165. compromise

  2166. with the

  2167. things of

  2168. the world?

  2169. Do we

  2170. take sin

  2171. seriously?

  2172. do we

  2173. take the

  2174. cost that

  2175. Jesus paid

  2176. seriously with

  2177. thankfulness?

  2178. Now here's the

  2179. second thing for

  2180. us to take

  2181. away.

  2182. Follow the

  2183. footstep of

  2184. Christ.

  2185. When Jesus

  2186. calls us to

  2187. follow Him,

  2188. oh that's a

  2189. baby.

  2190. When Jesus

  2191. calls us to

  2192. follow Him,

  2193. He calls us

  2194. to carry our

  2195. cross and

  2196. follow Him.

  2197. God's words

  2198. tells us to

  2199. forgive one

  2200. another in

  2201. the same

  2202. way as

  2203. Christ has

  2204. forgiven you.

  2205. Or what

  2206. He's saying

  2207. is in the

  2208. same way

  2209. that Jesus

  2210. has paid

  2211. the cost in

  2212. forgiving us,

  2213. He's calling

  2214. us to bear

  2215. the cost of

  2216. forgiving one

  2217. another in

  2218. the same

  2219. way as

  2220. He has

  2221. done.

  2222. I mean,

  2223. it's not just

  2224. in conflicts,

  2225. right?

  2226. We're called

  2227. to consider

  2228. one another

  2229. better than

  2230. ourselves.

  2231. We're called

  2232. to disciple

  2233. one another

  2234. and to

  2235. pour out

  2236. our lives

  2237. in one

  2238. another and

  2239. all of

  2240. these things

  2241. cost.

  2242. But here's

  2243. the important

  2244. thing.

  2245. In all of

  2246. these things,

  2247. there is a

  2248. cost when

  2249. you do it,

  2250. but there is

  2251. also a cost

  2252. when you

  2253. don't do it.

  2254. You see,

  2255. in conflict,

  2256. yeah,

  2257. there's a

  2258. cost to

  2259. forgive,

  2260. but there's

  2261. also a

  2262. cost when

  2263. you don't

  2264. forgive and

  2265. walk away.

  2266. And the

  2267. cost is paid

  2268. by broken

  2269. relationships,

  2270. disunity in

  2271. the group.

  2272. Even for

  2273. considering others

  2274. better than

  2275. yourself,

  2276. there's a

  2277. cost in

  2278. doing it,

  2279. but there's

  2280. also a

  2281. cost in

  2282. not doing

  2283. it.

  2284. It brings

  2285. disunity,

  2286. it brings

  2287. pride,

  2288. it brings

  2289. jealousy,

  2290. it brings

  2291. a whole lot

  2292. of stuff.

  2293. And what

  2294. it does is

  2295. it also

  2296. mars the

  2297. gospel

  2298. message to

  2299. the world

  2300. because unity

  2301. is supposed

  2302. to be a

  2303. message.

  2304. The church,

  2305. unity in the

  2306. church is

  2307. supposed to

  2308. be a gospel

  2309. message to

  2310. the world.

  2311. It brings

  2312. it destroys

  2313. that image.

  2314. A cost is

  2315. still paid.

  2316. You see,

  2317. there's a

  2318. cost whether

  2319. we do it

  2320. or whether

  2321. we don't

  2322. do it.

  2323. And that

  2324. is true

  2325. also for

  2326. evangelism

  2327. when we

  2328. share the

  2329. gospel to

  2330. other people.

  2331. You see,

  2332. in some

  2333. other countries,

  2334. there's a

  2335. real physical

  2336. cost in

  2337. sharing the

  2338. gospel,

  2339. isn't there?

  2340. If you

  2341. share the

  2342. gospel,

  2343. there's a

  2344. high chance

  2345. that you

  2346. might lose

  2347. your life,

  2348. lose your

  2349. family,

  2350. lose your

  2351. work,

  2352. lose a

  2353. whole lot

  2354. of stuff.

  2355. In Hong

  2356. Kong,

  2357. that might

  2358. not be

  2359. fully true,

  2360. but there's

  2361. still a cost

  2362. nonetheless.

  2363. Maybe the

  2364. cost is to

  2365. be looked at

  2366. as your

  2367. weird or

  2368. outdated,

  2369. arrogant,

  2370. prideful.

  2371. the cost

  2372. might be to

  2373. come out of

  2374. your comfort

  2375. zone,

  2376. but there's

  2377. a cost to

  2378. bringing the

  2379. gospel to

  2380. the people.

  2381. But there's

  2382. also a cost

  2383. if we don't

  2384. do it.

  2385. But the

  2386. cost is

  2387. paid by

  2388. the person

  2389. who does

  2390. not hear

  2391. the gospel.

  2392. They will

  2393. bear the

  2394. cost,

  2395. for they

  2396. will never

  2397. hear the

  2398. gospel.

  2399. They will

  2400. not hear

  2401. the gospel,

  2402. and they

  2403. might be

  2404. eternally

  2405. separated

  2406. from the

  2407. Father.

  2408. You see,

  2409. there's a

  2410. cost both

  2411. ways.

  2412. But church,

  2413. I want us

  2414. to think

  2415. about this

  2416. deeply,

  2417. because if

  2418. we follow

  2419. Jesus,

  2420. if we know

  2421. his life,

  2422. if we know

  2423. the life of

  2424. Jesus,

  2425. and we

  2426. follow him,

  2427. shouldn't

  2428. our life

  2429. in many

  2430. ways reflect

  2431. his?

  2432. Sometimes

  2433. we are so

  2434. stuck

  2435. with getting

  2436. our own

  2437. lives right.

  2438. We are so

  2439. stuck with

  2440. getting our

  2441. devotions right.

  2442. We are so

  2443. stuck with

  2444. getting our

  2445. relationships

  2446. right,

  2447. our career

  2448. right,

  2449. our life

  2450. right,

  2451. and I'm

  2452. not saying

  2453. those things

  2454. are not

  2455. important.

  2456. God cares

  2457. about them,

  2458. but there's

  2459. something more

  2460. than those.

  2461. And it's

  2462. the last

  2463. thing that

  2464. Jesus tells

  2465. us to do

  2466. before he

  2467. lives,

  2468. and that is

  2469. to go

  2470. and make

  2471. disciples of

  2472. all nations,

  2473. baptizing

  2474. them,

  2475. teaching

  2476. them,

  2477. to follow,

  2478. to obey

  2479. Jesus.

  2480. If you

  2481. look at

  2482. the life

  2483. of Jesus,

  2484. he paid

  2485. the cost,

  2486. he surrounded

  2487. his life

  2488. with the

  2489. fact of

  2490. bringing the

  2491. gospel to

  2492. the world.

  2493. That was

  2494. his big

  2495. one,

  2496. and he

  2497. paid that

  2498. cost,

  2499. and shouldn't

  2500. our life

  2501. reflect that

  2502. too?

  2503. But many

  2504. times there

  2505. are other

  2506. things that

  2507. takes

  2508. advantage

  2509. or

  2510. dominion

  2511. of our

  2512. lives.

  2513. An Irish

  2514. missionary to

  2515. India,

  2516. her name

  2517. was

  2518. Amy

  2519. Carmichael,

  2520. who died

  2521. in 1952

  2522. at the age

  2523. of 84.

  2524. She was in

  2525. India as a

  2526. missionary for

  2527. 55 years

  2528. of our

  2529. life.

  2530. She was a

  2531. missionary there

  2532. bringing gospel

  2533. and taking

  2534. care of the

  2535. orphans there.

  2536. Her life was

  2537. not easy.

  2538. There was

  2539. fractures,

  2540. there was

  2541. pain,

  2542. there was

  2543. persecution,

  2544. and very

  2545. hard.

  2546. And she

  2547. writes this

  2548. poem,

  2549. which is a

  2550. challenge to

  2551. Christians who

  2552. wanted to

  2553. live a

  2554. comfortable life

  2555. without sharing

  2556. the gospel.

  2557. It's very

  2558. sharp.

  2559. And this

  2560. is the

  2561. third

  2562. paragraph

  2563. of that

  2564. poem.

  2565. And she

  2566. says,

  2567. No wound,

  2568. no scar,

  2569. yet as the

  2570. master shall

  2571. the servant

  2572. be,

  2573. and pierced

  2574. are the

  2575. feet that

  2576. follow me.

  2577. But thine

  2578. are whole,

  2579. can he have

  2580. followed far

  2581. who has no

  2582. wound nor

  2583. scar?

  2584. It's a

  2585. poem to

  2586. really

  2587. reflect.

  2588. on.

  2589. Church,

  2590. I'm not

  2591. saying this

  2592. as a

  2593. person who

  2594. has really

  2595. created evangelism.

  2596. As much as

  2597. I'm speaking,

  2598. I feel like I'm

  2599. speaking to

  2600. myself.

  2601. How much

  2602. is mission

  2603. and the

  2604. gospel and

  2605. the love for

  2606. the lost

  2607. part of my

  2608. heart and

  2609. my desire?

  2610. Church,

  2611. it's so easy

  2612. to get lost

  2613. in our own

  2614. lives,

  2615. in our

  2616. work,

  2617. but there's

  2618. eternity.

  2619. eternity,

  2620. there's

  2621. Jesus,

  2622. and there's

  2623. the lost

  2624. outside of

  2625. this,

  2626. who needs

  2627. the gospel,

  2628. who needs

  2629. to hear that

  2630. Jesus has

  2631. paid the

  2632. cost.

  2633. So follow in

  2634. the footstep

  2635. of Christ,

  2636. in our daily

  2637. living,

  2638. in our

  2639. relationships

  2640. with one

  2641. another,

  2642. and mostly

  2643. in bringing

  2644. the gospel

  2645. to this

  2646. city and

  2647. to the

  2648. people around

  2649. us.

  2650. and here's

  2651. the final

  2652. thing to

  2653. think about,

  2654. is to go

  2655. with the

  2656. assurance of

  2657. Christ's love

  2658. for you.

  2659. Now,

  2660. this is not

  2661. a tag on

  2662. from the

  2663. second point,

  2664. which is

  2665. very harsh.

  2666. This

  2667. actually flows

  2668. out.

  2669. Go with the

  2670. assurance of

  2671. Christ's love

  2672. for you.

  2673. You see,

  2674. Christ paid

  2675. the cost

  2676. for our

  2677. sin,

  2678. and on

  2679. the cross,

  2680. the cost

  2681. was paid,

  2682. justice was

  2683. done,

  2684. and in

  2685. the same

  2686. way,

  2687. you know,

  2688. for David,

  2689. the cost

  2690. was paid,

  2691. there was

  2692. justice,

  2693. but in

  2694. many ways,

  2695. he lost

  2696. his son,

  2697. and in

  2698. many ways,

  2699. love did

  2700. not really

  2701. come together

  2702. with justice

  2703. there.

  2704. You see,

  2705. there was

  2706. justice,

  2707. but he

  2708. lost his

  2709. son.

  2710. But in

  2711. all history,

  2712. there is

  2713. one place

  2714. where justice

  2715. and love

  2716. comes together,

  2717. and it's

  2718. the cross.

  2719. You see,

  2720. when we come

  2721. to the cross,

  2722. our sin

  2723. is justified.

  2724. The justice

  2725. was done,

  2726. it's paid.

  2727. By the same

  2728. time,

  2729. we are so

  2730. loved at

  2731. the cross,

  2732. because it

  2733. was not

  2734. you,

  2735. it was not

  2736. me who

  2737. paid that

  2738. cost,

  2739. it was God

  2740. himself,

  2741. with his

  2742. son,

  2743. Jesus Christ,

  2744. dying on

  2745. the cross.

  2746. When we

  2747. look at

  2748. the cross,

  2749. in the

  2750. words of

  2751. late Tim

  2752. Keller,

  2753. we see

  2754. that we

  2755. are more

  2756. sinful than

  2757. we could

  2758. ever imagine,

  2759. ever think

  2760. of right

  2761. now,

  2762. and at the

  2763. same time,

  2764. when we look

  2765. at the cross,

  2766. we see

  2767. that we

  2768. are more

  2769. loved than

  2770. we can

  2771. ever dream

  2772. of.

  2773. So church,

  2774. don't take

  2775. sin lightly.

  2776. Do not

  2777. take the

  2778. cross,

  2779. the cost

  2780. that Jesus

  2781. has paid

  2782. lightly.

  2783. and at the

  2784. same time,

  2785. follow in the

  2786. footstep of

  2787. Christ in

  2788. paying the

  2789. cost in

  2790. our

  2791. relationships,

  2792. in our

  2793. servings,

  2794. and especially

  2795. in bringing

  2796. the gospel to

  2797. the people

  2798. around us.

  2799. And in

  2800. all of this

  2801. thing,

  2802. go with this

  2803. assurance that

  2804. you are loved,

  2805. that you are

  2806. justified,

  2807. that nothing can

  2808. take you away

  2809. from the love

  2810. of Christ.

  2811. And go with

  2812. this assurance

  2813. that Christ is

  2814. with you,

  2815. because in

  2816. the Great

  2817. Commission,

  2818. there is a

  2819. promise at

  2820. the end,

  2821. that Jesus

  2822. says,

  2823. I will be

  2824. with you

  2825. until the

  2826. end of

  2827. times.

  2828. He is with

  2829. you as you

  2830. bring the

  2831. gospel,

  2832. as you live

  2833. out a life

  2834. that does

  2835. not take

  2836. sin lightly,

  2837. that lives

  2838. a life of

  2839. thankfulness,

  2840. gratefulness for

  2841. what Jesus

  2842. has done on

  2843. the cross.

  2844. before we

  2845. reflect on

  2846. that,

  2847. I understand

  2848. that there is

  2849. a lot of

  2850. stuff in

  2851. this story,

  2852. and this can

  2853. be quite a

  2854. challenging

  2855. passage with

  2856. a lot to

  2857. reflect on.

  2858. So if you

  2859. guys have

  2860. any questions,

  2861. please feel

  2862. to reach out

  2863. to us,

  2864. the elders,

  2865. CG leaders,

  2866. where we can

  2867. study together

  2868. and pray

  2869. together.

  2870. So church,

  2871. why don't we

  2872. spend about

  2873. a few seconds,

  2874. 20 seconds,

  2875. a minute or

  2876. so,

  2877. just to reflect

  2878. on that.

  2879. Where is our

  2880. heart?

  2881. How is our

  2882. heart?

  2883. How do we

  2884. take the

  2885. cross and

  2886. think about

  2887. where is

  2888. evangelism in

  2889. my life?

  2890. So let's

  2891. take a minute

  2892. or so as

  2893. the band

  2894. comes in.
