  1. So, these closing words of Matthew's gospel are often called the Great Commission, and it is

  2. ! The Great Commission is to go and make disciples of all nations.

  3. !

  4. This Great Commission is preceded, and it's based on, it rests on a great claim made by

  5. the Lord Jesus in verse 18, where Jesus says to the disciples, all authority in heaven and

  6. on earth has been given to me.

  7. That is the great claim that Jesus makes, and that's what we're going to look at for a few

  8. minutes this evening.

  9. I want to begin with just a couple of observations, and the first is that today, as we meet here

  10. in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, more than ever before, there are groups of Christ followers

  11. all across the globe in more nations, tribes, languages, people groups than ever before.

  12. Just from my own experience, I've been privileged to experience a small part of that huge diversity.

  13. I remember attending four-hour-long services in Nigeria, which featured a lot of dancing, or meeting a saffron-robed leader of Christ devotees in North India,

  14. or taking part in prayer meetings where people prayed in Dari, Farsi, Sarani, as well as in English.

  15. And I've got friends who have translated the language of a remote tribe in Papua New Guinea.

  16. Another friend who's translated it into the language of a Himalayan nomadic tribe.

  17. And in both these people groups, there are churches today.

  18. I've also had the privilege of worshiping in multi-ethnic churches in the Gulf, and also services conducted in Nepali, Urdu, Hindi, Ladakh, Gaelic, Hungarian, Tamil, Malayalam,

  19. and a number of other languages, too.

  20. And of course, worshiping in many congregations in the Free Church of Scotland as well.

  21. But all of these are centered on the same Lord Jesus Christ.

  22. And that's just a tiny fraction of what's going on in the world today.

  23. And that's amazing when you think of that it all began with a few very ordinary, uneducated folk in Galilee,

  24. in a backwater at the edge of the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago.

  25. But the second observation is that there are still huge areas of the world.

  26. Peoples, languages, ethnic groups that are hardly reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  27. There are still over 1,400 languages that have no part of the Bible translated.

  28. Closer to home, there are villages, towns, parts of cities with very little in the way of access to the gospel

  29. and widespread ignorance of the Bible's message.

  30. And that's true of this city, too.

  31. There are also people groups within our own nation with few or no believers among them.

  32. And of course, every new generation needs to be evangelized, needs to be taught the gospel.

  33. So there is still much work to be done.

  34. So as we think of the Great Commission in Matthew 28, 18 to 20, perhaps the key word in that is the word all,

  35. which appears four times in these few verses.

  36. This is my own translation, which is slightly clunky, but it brings out the fact that this word all is there four times.

  37. So the key word is all.

  38. There's all authority, all nations, all Jesus' commands, and all the time.

  39. But this evening, our time is short, so I just want to focus really on the first of those, all authority.

  40. And this is the great claim that Jesus makes on which the Great Commission rests.

  41. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus Christ.

  42. He's claiming universal kingship.

  43. If you read any of the gospels, you'll soon realize that a phrase that Jesus used a lot was the kingdom of God or the kingdom of heaven.

  44. And the kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, has drawn near with the coming of Jesus.

  45. And here, at the end of Matthew, very clearly, Jesus is identifying himself as that king.

  46. He is the king.

  47. He is making that claim of himself.

  48. And he's saying that it's been given to him, given to him by God the Father.

  49. But that raises at least three questions for us.

  50. And I want to look at those.

  51. First of all, the question is, why should we believe him?

  52. Second, when was this authority given to Jesus?

  53. And third, what kind of king is Jesus?

  54. First of all, then, why should we believe him?

  55. You might read or hear this claim.

  56. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  57. And you might think, hang on a minute.

  58. How can this man, this first century Jewish peasant from near the margins of the Roman Empire,

  59. who was also crucified in utter humiliation,

  60. how can he claim to be the king of the whole world?

  61. How can he claim to be the lord of the entire universe?

  62. Why should his disciples believe him?

  63. And why should we today believe him?

  64. Why should we believe this claim?

  65. Well, just to give a bit of context,

  66. the Jewish scriptures, what we call the Old Testament,

  67. prophesied a Messiah figure,

  68. one who would come and reign with justice and righteousness.

  69. And he would be the king of the Israelites,

  70. but also his kingship, his authority would extend over all nations.

  71. And here's just a sample of, there's more than this,

  72. but this is just a sample of some of the passages in the Old Testament.

  73. So first of all, Genesis 49, 10,

  74. that the scepter will not depart from Judah,

  75. nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,

  76. until he to whom it belongs shall come,

  77. and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

  78. Or Psalm 72,

  79. which is, I suppose, like a prayer about the king

  80. in the line of David and Solomon,

  81. may he rule from sea to sea,

  82. and from the river to the ends of the earth.

  83. May all kings bow down to him,

  84. and all nations serve him.

  85. But there's one passage in particular

  86. that Jesus is riffing off in this Great Commission,

  87. and that is Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  88. And in that chapter, Daniel has this vision,

  89. the prophet Daniel has a vision of

  90. four ferocious beasts

  91. that represent four kings and four empires.

  92. And then Daniel sees heaven and the throne of God,

  93. and God in this vision is given the title

  94. the Ancient of Days.

  95. And Daniel writes

  96. that in the visions of the night,

  97. this is Daniel 7, 13, and 14,

  98. and you can listen to the resemblances

  99. with the Great Commission,

  100. these words from Matthew 28.

  101. Daniel writes,

  102. in the visions of the night,

  103. I saw one like a son of man

  104. coming with the clouds of heaven.

  105. He came to the Ancient of Days

  106. and was presented before him.

  107. He was given authority,

  108. honor, and kingship.

  109. All peoples, nations, and languages

  110. will serve him.

  111. His authority is an everlasting authority.

  112. That will not pass away.

  113. And his kingdom will never be destroyed.

  114. So not for the first time,

  115. Jesus identifies himself

  116. with this exalted figure

  117. in Daniel's vision.

  118. This one like a son of man.

  119. And you maybe heard some of the echoes

  120. of this passage in Jesus' words.

  121. All authority given to him.

  122. All nations serving him.

  123. And all of the time.

  124. That it would be an everlasting kingship.

  125. So Jesus is claiming that he is this king.

  126. He is this Messiah.

  127. He is this son of man.

  128. Now this meeting in Galilee

  129. at which Jesus says this

  130. takes place days,

  131. or at the most weeks,

  132. after Jesus was brutally crucified

  133. by the Roman Empire,

  134. having been mocked and ridiculed

  135. for his claim to be a king.

  136. And yet here he was,

  137. that same Jesus,

  138. who had been crucified,

  139. now standing before them alive.

  140. The tomb where his corpse

  141. had been laid is empty.

  142. Because Jesus has been raised

  143. from the dead

  144. by the power of God.

  145. And that resurrection vindicates Jesus

  146. and all the claims that he made.

  147. We know about vindication,

  148. cases of vindication.

  149. For example,

  150. in recent history,

  151. there was the post office scandal

  152. where many postmasters

  153. were falsely accused

  154. of fiddling the books.

  155. And some of them were put in jail.

  156. And then it was discovered

  157. and came to light

  158. that it was a computer system fault.

  159. And those postmasters

  160. have been vindicated.

  161. Their innocence has been declared

  162. and they have been vindicated

  163. of all the wrong

  164. that they were accused of.

  165. will magnify that

  166. by an infinite amount

  167. and you'll see

  168. what the resurrection

  169. does for Jesus.

  170. The human verdict on Jesus

  171. was that he was a fake king,

  172. that he was an imposter,

  173. deserving only of rejection

  174. and torture and death.

  175. But God has utterly turned

  176. that verdict on its head.

  177. This rising from the dead

  178. is the most spectacular

  179. and stunning vindication

  180. of Jesus

  181. and of all that he claimed to be,

  182. all that he claimed for himself,

  183. including that he is the Messiah,

  184. that he is the Son of Man,

  185. that he is the King.

  186. And this resurrection of Jesus

  187. is something that these disciples

  188. witness with their own eyes

  189. on this occasion.

  190. They are there,

  191. they see him before them.

  192. And on a number of other occasions,

  193. they saw him alive

  194. after his suffering,

  195. after his crucifixion.

  196. And it was something

  197. that they gave witness to

  198. in their preaching

  199. and then later in their writing,

  200. what we have in the New Testament.

  201. Their message was that

  202. we have seen the Lord

  203. risen from the dead.

  204. And many of those disciples

  205. paid for that claim

  206. with their lives.

  207. And so that is why

  208. we can believe

  209. Jesus' claim,

  210. because he was vindicated

  211. through resurrection.

  212. Second question is,

  213. when was this authority

  214. given to him?

  215. Jesus is a divine person.

  216. We see that in verse 19,

  217. where Jesus commissions his disciples

  218. to baptize the nations

  219. in or into the name

  220. of the Father

  221. and of the Son

  222. and of the Holy Spirit.

  223. Now, you see there,

  224. you'll notice that

  225. there's only one name,

  226. the name of God.

  227. In the Old Testament,

  228. it's the name Yahweh,

  229. the Lord.

  230. And yet there are three

  231. who share that name.

  232. It's the name of the Father

  233. and of the Son

  234. and of the Holy Spirit.

  235. And of course,

  236. the Son is Jesus Christ.

  237. He is the Son.

  238. So he shares in the divine name,

  239. in the divine identity.

  240. He is himself God.

  241. And as God,

  242. in one sense,

  243. he has always ruled.

  244. There's no,

  245. in one sense,

  246. he was never given authority

  247. because he's always had authority

  248. as God,

  249. God the Son.

  250. The one with the divine name,

  251. the divine identity.

  252. But in Jesus Christ,

  253. God came to this world

  254. in human form,

  255. in human flesh.

  256. And so it's now

  257. as the one who is

  258. both fully God

  259. and fully human

  260. that he has been given authority.

  261. He is now the,

  262. both fully God

  263. and fully human.

  264. He is the mediator

  265. between God

  266. and human beings

  267. who has completed

  268. his mission

  269. through his death

  270. and resurrection.

  271. And as the one

  272. who has completed

  273. that mission

  274. as the mediator,

  275. as the,

  276. as the savior,

  277. as the,

  278. as the man Jesus,

  279. he has been given

  280. all authority

  281. in heaven

  282. and on earth.

  283. The third question is,

  284. what kind

  285. of king

  286. is he?

  287. Maybe the idea

  288. of someone claiming

  289. to be king

  290. over all the nations

  291. of the world

  292. makes you an easy.

  293. It might sound

  294. to you

  295. imperialistic

  296. and throughout history

  297. and today,

  298. empire

  299. is,

  300. well,

  301. to say the least,

  302. it can be problematic.

  303. But this king

  304. is radically different

  305. from all the other kings

  306. and emperors

  307. and rulers

  308. that world history

  309. has thrown up.

  310. We see that

  311. in words earlier on

  312. in Matthew's gospel

  313. in Matthew 20

    Matthew 20:25–28

  314. verses 25 to 28

  315. where we read

  316. that Jesus called

  317. the disciples to him

  318. and said,

  319. you know that the rulers

  320. of the nations

  321. lord it over them

  322. and their great ones

  323. exercise authority

  324. over them.

  325. That's,

  326. of course,

  327. all too familiar.

  328. It's the world

  329. that we know.

  330. Then he says,

  331. it shall not be so

  332. among you.

  333. But whoever would be

  334. great among you

  335. must be your servant

  336. and whoever would be

  337. first among you

  338. must be your slave

  339. even as the son of man

  340. came not to be served

  341. but to serve

  342. and to give his life

  343. as a ransom

  344. for many.

  345. Now when Jesus said

  346. these last words

  347. about giving his life

  348. as a ransom for many,

  349. that was still in the future

  350. when he said these words

  351. in Matthew 20.

  352. It was still a prediction

  353. but now it has happened.

  354. Jesus has given

  355. this ultimate service,

  356. this ultimate act

  357. for the benefit,

  358. for the good

  359. of others.

  360. He has given his life

  361. as a ransom

  362. for many.

  363. Jesus is the king

  364. whose policy,

  365. whose way of ruling

  366. is service

  367. and self-giving love,

  368. of self-sacrificing love,

  369. love that is,

  370. that seeks the good

  371. of the other

  372. above his own good,

  373. his own interest.

  374. That's the kind of king

  375. that Jesus is.

  376. He is the king of love.

  377. And so,

  378. Jesus has all authority

  379. in heaven

  380. and on earth.

  381. His reign is

  382. universal.

  383. He is the world's

  384. true king

  385. and lord

  386. and rightful lord.

  387. And the call of the

  388. gospel today

  389. to you

  390. is

  391. to turn to him

  392. and to receive him

  393. as your king,

  394. to recognize

  395. and acknowledge him

  396. as the true king

  397. and lord of all

  398. and to give him

  399. your allegiance

  400. and your trust

  401. and your love,

  402. your devotion.

  403. And,

  404. if you have done that,

  405. then,

  406. your task

  407. is the great commission

  408. to go and make

  409. disciples of all nations,

  410. baptizing them

  411. in the name of the Father

  412. and of the Son

  413. and the Holy Spirit

  414. and teaching them

  415. to obey

  416. everything that Jesus

  417. commands.

  418. And his promise

  419. to you is that

  420. he will be with you always

  421. to the very end

  422. of the age

  423. until that time

  424. when the earth

  425. is filled

  426. with the knowledge

  427. of the glory

  428. of the Lord Jesus

  429. as the waters

  430. cover the sea.

  431. Amen.

  432. May God bless

  433. his word

  434. to us.

  435. Amen.

  436. Amen.
