  1. If you don't know me, my name is Niels. I'm one of the leaders here. I'll be preaching.

  2. Because of the baptisms, we'll have a lot of people here today who have not been in the rest of the service, in the series.

  3. We're in the book of 2 Samuel, in the Old Testament, in the Bible.

  4. So I thought, let me, you know, start with the introduction so that, yeah, we can bring you a bit up to speed.

  5. But also, actually, before all that, let's pray because we want God to speak to us.

  6. So let's pray together.

  7. Our Father, thank you that you speak.

  8. That you speak to us in your love, in your grace.

  9. We pray that we would listen.

  10. Pray that we would hear, each of us, what we need to hear.

  11. Thank you that you are a God of grace.

  12. God who gave your son, Jesus.

  13. And pray that we would look to him today.

  14. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  15. Amen.

  16. Great.

  17. But, yeah, we're in 2 Samuel, and it's nearly the end of the series.

  18. Now, our youngest daughter turned 12 a couple of months ago.

  19. So she's finally old enough to watch Marvel.

  20. And so we've been going movie by movie through the MCU, which has been really great.

  21. Now, there's one movie in there that I'm not going to say its name because I know of some people who haven't seen it all yet.

  22. But there's one that I think is outstanding because it's very different from all the others.

  23. Because it doesn't have a happy ending.

  24. Now, most movies have a happy ending, right?

  25. All those movies, you know, yes, the heroes, they are struggling.

  26. They're having a tough time.

  27. But ultimately, they win.

  28. And that's what you want, right?

  29. You want to have a movie.

  30. You want to relax and be encouraged.

  31. And so you want a movie with a happy ending.

  32. I mean, we all want happy endings, right?

  33. In all our life, maybe your marriage is going through a difficult time.

  34. But, you know, with counseling and prayer, you hope that you will work through it.

  35. And then, you know, our marriage is restored.

  36. Maybe work at the moment is really tough.

  37. The hours, the pressure.

  38. But when this project is over, then we go back to the good old days, right?

  39. That's what we're waiting for.

  40. Maybe you remember the COVID days.

  41. We were just waiting for it all to finish.

  42. And now, actually, Hong Kong is really nice again, right?

  43. Without all the restrictions.

  44. The economy, you know, if we just wait long enough, it will start growing again.

  45. That's what we want.

  46. We want, is everything okay?

  47. Okay.

  48. Yeah, we just want things to be restored.

  49. We want a happy ending.

  50. Now, the Bible is all about ultimately happy endings, right?

  51. It's all about hope.

  52. It's all about restoration.

  53. It all, I mean, it starts with everything going wrong in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve.

  54. But it ends with restoration.

  55. And so many along the way.

  56. And so, this is 2 Samuel.

  57. It's the story of David.

  58. David, who we all know from David and Goliath.

  59. God's chosen king.

  60. And he was a wonderful king.

  61. And under him, God built this beautiful kingdom that we saw a few weeks ago.

  62. And, yeah, it looked great.

  63. The only thing is, it was all under threat because of what David had done, right?

  64. He had committed adultery and murder.

  65. There were terrible consequences.

  66. It affected him.

  67. It affected everyone else around him.

  68. And, yeah, two weeks ago, he had to flee for his life because his son tried to take over the kingdom, made himself king.

  69. But the past two weeks, then, some good news.

  70. First of all, everything that happened really changed him, brought him back to God.

  71. And then, last week, yeah, David was saved.

  72. He was delivered from certain death.

  73. Basically, because his great enemy, his son, yeah, died.

  74. The war was over.

  75. And so, now everything is set for him to come back, right?

  76. It was a great cost.

  77. But today, David is going to come back and sit on the throne again.

  78. And this is basically the end of the story.

  79. Next week is just an epilogue.

  80. But, yeah, we called it The Return of the King, right?

  81. So, you know that movie.

  82. We want a happy ending.

  83. So, why don't we go and look at that?

  84. So, Anastasia is going to come up and read a few parts of this passage.

  85. And then, we'll look at it together.

  86. The scripture reading today comes from the book of 2 Samuel, chapter 19 to 20.

    2 Samuel 19 chapter mention

  87. Please follow along on your bulletin, on the screen, or on your own Bibles.

  88. Starting in chapter 19, verse 8, we read,

  89. Now, Israel had fled every man to his own home.

  90. And all the people were arguing throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying,

  91. The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies and saved us from the hand of the Philistines.

  92. And now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.

  93. But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle.

  94. Now, therefore, why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?

  95. And King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests.

  96. Say to the elders of Judah,

  97. Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his house,

  98. when the word of our Israel has come to the king?

  99. You are my brothers.

  100. You are my bone and my flesh.

  101. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?

  102. And say to Amsa,

  103. Are you not my bone and my flesh?

  104. God do so to me and more also,

  105. if you are not commander of my army from now on in place of Joab.

  106. And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah as one man,

  107. so that they sent word to the king,

  108. Return, both you and all your servants.

  109. So the king came back to the Jordan,

  110. and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king,

  111. and to bring the king over the Jordan.

  112. And Shemai, the son of Jerah, the Benjamite from Baharim,

  113. hurried to come down with the men of Judah to meet King David.

  114. And with him were a thousand men from Benjamin.

  115. And Ziba, the servant of the house of Saul,

  116. with his fifteen sons and his twenty servants,

  117. rushed down to the Jordan before the king,

  118. and they crossed the fort to bring over the king's household,

  119. and to do his pleasure.

  120. And Shemai, the son of Jerah,

  121. fell down before the king,

  122. as he was about to cross the Jordan,

  123. and said to the king,

  124. Let not let my lord hold me guilty,

  125. or remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem.

  126. Do not let the king take it to heart,

  127. for your servant knows that I have sinned.

  128. Therefore, behold, I have come this day,

  129. the first of all the house of Joseph,

  130. to come down to meet my lord the king.

  131. Abishai, the son of Zeriah, answered,

  132. Shall I be put to death for this,

  133. because he cursed the Lord's anointed?

  134. But David said,

  135. What have I to do with you,

  136. you sons of Zeriah,

  137. that you should this day be as an adversary to me?

  138. Shall anyone be put to death in Israel this day?

  139. For do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?

  140. And the king said to Shimei,

  141. You shall not die.

  142. And the king gave him his oath.

  143. And Mephibosheth, the son of Saul,

  144. came down to meet the king.

  145. He had neither taken care of his feet,

  146. nor trimmed his beard,

  147. nor washed his clothes,

  148. from the day the king departed

  149. until the day he came back in safety.

  150. And when he came to Jerusalem to meet the king,

  151. the king said to him,

  152. Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?

  153. He answered,

  154. My lord, O king,

  155. my servant deceived me.

  156. For your servant said to him,

  157. I will saddle a donkey for myself,

  158. that I may ride on it and go with the king.

  159. For your servant is lame.

  160. He has slandered your servant to my lord the king.

  161. But my lord, the king is like the angel of God.

  162. Do therefore what seems good to you.

  163. For all my father's house were but men doomed to death

  164. before my lord the king.

  165. But you set your servant among those who eat at your table.

  166. What further right have I then to cry to the king?

  167. And the king said to him,

  168. Why speak any more of your affairs?

  169. I have decided you and Ziba shall divide the land.

  170. And Mephibosheth said to the king,

  171. Oh, let him take it all,

  172. since my lord the king has come safely home.

  173. In chapter 20, verse 23, we read,

  174. Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel.

  175. And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada,

  176. was in command of the Kertites and the Pelethites.

  177. And Adoram was in charge of the forced labor.

  178. And Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilut,

  179. was the recorder.

  180. And Shiva was secretary.

  181. And Zadok and Abithar were priests.

  182. And Ira, the Jairat, was also David's priest.

  183. This is the word of God.

  184. Thanks, Anastasia.

  185. Yeah, we're in the middle of a story.

  186. I'm sure there's some details that, for visitors,

  187. you wonder what that's about.

  188. But let's look at it together.

  189. Now, we couldn't read it all.

  190. And yet, if you look at the big story,

  191. what's the big point?

  192. I think you can see David is back, right?

  193. David is back.

  194. Today, he's crossing the Jordan,

  195. and he's going to come back to Jerusalem

  196. and come on the throne.

  197. He had to flee for his sin,

  198. but now he's back,

  199. and he's going to Jerusalem

  200. with great fanfare.

  201. Everyone's coming to meet him.

  202. And you can really see that

  203. if you look at all the different stories, right?

  204. So in chapter 15, when he had to flee,

  205. what happened?

  206. Well, he left Jerusalem,

  207. and then he met his loyal friends.

  208. Next slide.

  209. He met his loyal friends.

  210. Then he met Tiba.

  211. Then he met Shimi.

  212. And then he crossed the Jordan.

  213. And now, what happens today?

  214. Well, he crosses the Jordan.

  215. He meets Shimi.

  216. He meets Jiba.

  217. He meets his loyal friends.

  218. And he gets back to Jerusalem.

  219. It's really the same thing in reverse, right?

  220. I don't know.

  221. We sometimes go on holiday,

  222. and we take the airport bus.

  223. And it's always the same, right?

  224. Here's the Eagle's Nest Tunnel,

  225. and then the Stonecutters Bridge

  226. and the Tsing Ma Bridge

  227. and under City Gate Outlets,

  228. and we get to the airport.

  229. And then when we come back,

  230. well, the City Gate Outlets

  231. and what's it?

  232. The Tsing Ma Bridge

  233. and the Stonecutters Bridge.

  234. And you really feel,

  235. hey, we're getting back, right?

  236. And that's the point here.

  237. David is back.

  238. It's exactly reversed.

  239. Everything that happened

  240. is like it's reversed,

  241. which is incredible mercy, right?

  242. God's incredible mercy

  243. after what he had done.

  244. He deserved to die,

  245. but God had mercy,

  246. and now he's back,

  247. which is great news for David himself.

  248. And of course, given who David is,

  249. it should be such great news for the people

  250. because here was God's chosen king,

  251. the man after God's heart, right?

  252. He was the one who ruled

  253. with righteousness and justice,

  254. and everything was so great under him.

  255. And when you see this passage,

  256. now we have a Bible reading plan

  257. at this church,

  258. and in the summer,

  259. we went to Samuel,

  260. and people were sharing,

  261. and many of them were struck

  262. by how David is so forgiving, right?

  263. So there was this guy, Shimee,

  264. who, yeah,

  265. when David had to flee,

  266. he stood on some higher ledge,

  267. and he threw stones at David.

  268. Get out, get out,

  269. you man of blood.

  270. He cursed the king,

  271. and yeah,

  272. terrible event.

  273. But then, of course,

  274. he made a miscalculation, right?

  275. Because now David is back.

  276. And you can hear Shimee,

  277. and you can hear him come.

  278. Anastasia read it so well, right?

  279. Oh, please, Lord,

  280. I know I've sinned.

  281. Please don't take it to heart, right?

  282. Because, yeah,

  283. he knows David is back,

  284. and he did real wrong.

  285. And then one of David's officers says,

  286. I mean,

  287. shouldn't we put this guy to death, right?

  288. He cursed the king.

  289. That is,

  290. you shouldn't do that, right?

  291. But then what does David say?

  292. No, right?

  293. Why should you be as an adversary to me,

  294. you sons of Zeruiah,

  295. my officers,

  296. shall anyone,

  297. what is it,

  298. verse 22,

  299. shall anyone be put to death in Israel this day?

  300. For do I not know

  301. that I am this day king over Israel?

  302. And the king said to Shimee,

  303. you shall not die,

  304. and the king gave him his oath, right?

  305. Here is someone who did something so wrong,

  306. and yet David is forgiving, right?

  307. He,

  308. you won't die,

  309. I swear.

  310. Wonderful, right?

  311. So,

  312. yeah,

  313. David is really back.

  314. And that's important

  315. because then in chapter 20,

  316. we get the counterpart.

  317. What is the counterpart?

  318. Well,

  319. you have the king

  320. and you have the kingdom.

  321. In chapter 20,

  322. we didn't read it,

  323. but it's all about how the kingdom is back.

  324. If you're interested,

  325. why is it?

  326. The story isn't that important.

  327. There's a bit of squabbling.

  328. An argument between David's tribe,

  329. Judah,

  330. and some of the other tribes.

  331. And at some point,

  332. there's one guy who says,

  333. well,

  334. we've had enough.

  335. 20 verse 1.

  336. Now,

  337. there happened to be there

  338. a worthless man

  339. whose name was Sheba,

  340. the son of Bichri,

  341. a Benjaminite.

  342. And he blew the trumpet

  343. and said,

  344. we have no portion in David

  345. and we have no inheritance

  346. in the son of Jesse.

  347. Every man to his ten,

  348. so Israel.

  349. And,

  350. yeah,

  351. he tries to just split the kingdom.

  352. Now,

  353. in the end,

  354. he doesn't get many followers.

  355. He and his friends

  356. flee to some city

  357. and David's army

  358. comes after him

  359. and in the end,

  360. he gets beheaded.

  361. In the story,

  362. Joab becomes commander again.

  363. It's not that important,

  364. but the interesting thing is,

  365. it's actually a reboot

  366. of chapters 2 to 4.

  367. We never preached on it,

  368. but it seems to,

  369. there's three key events

  370. that are exactly the same

  371. as chapters 2 to 4.

  372. Why does that matter?

  373. Well,

  374. chapters 2 to 4 of the book

  375. was God establishing

  376. David's kingdom.

  377. It's how David became king

  378. over all Israel.

  379. And so,

  380. the fact that we get

  381. a reboot,

  382. but we get the same thing,

  383. David,

  384. here's the kingdom.

  385. God is reestablishing

  386. David's kingdom,

  387. which is what we want,

  388. right?

  389. It's not just about

  390. the guy on the throne,

  391. but his rule,

  392. a rule of victory

  393. and peace

  394. and rest

  395. and blessing.

  396. That is what we want.

  397. And yeah,

  398. that's what we get

  399. in chapter 20.

  400. And at the end of the chapter,

  401. we read that summary.

  402. It's the same as chapter 8,

  403. right?

  404. At the end of chapter 8,

  405. there was this summary,

  406. kind of,

  407. David seems so stable,

  408. the kingdom is here,

  409. and now end of chapter 20.

  410. Again,

  411. we get this summary,

  412. and Joab was over the army,

  413. and Jehoshaphat,

  414. the son of El-Hilut,

  415. was the recorder,

  416. and this guy was a priest,

  417. and right?

  418. Again,

  419. it's not Absalom's kingdom,

  420. it's David's kingdom.

  421. David is back.

  422. The kingdom is back.

  423. That is such a wonderful news.

  424. It really feels like

  425. the good old days,

  426. the happy ending

  427. that we want.

  428. Except,

  429. I know what you're expecting,

  430. right?

  431. Is it really so good?

  432. If you've read it carefully,

  433. if you've maybe read

  434. the rest of the Bible,

  435. is it really so good?

  436. They seem back,

  437. but are they?

  438. Are the king

  439. in the kingdom back?

  440. Because with this guy,

  441. Shimee,

  442. I don't know if you did

  443. the Bible reading plan,

  444. and after 2 Samuel,

  445. you read 1 Kings.

  446. And we meet David

  447. at the end of his life,

  448. when he kind of gives

  449. instructions to his son Solomon,

  450. who will become

  451. the next king.

  452. And what kind of things

  453. does David say?

  454. He gives some instructions.

  455. 1 Kings chapter 2,

    1 Kings 2:8

  456. verses 8 and 9,

  457. it's here on the screen.

  458. And David says,

  459. And there's also with you

  460. Shimee,

  461. the son of Gerah,

  462. the Benjaminite

  463. from Bacchariim,

  464. who cursed me

  465. with a grievous curse

  466. on the day

  467. when I went to Maganaim.

  468. And when he came down

  469. to meet me at the Jordan,

  470. I swore to him

  471. by the Lord,

  472. saying,

  473. I will not put you

  474. to death with a sword.

  475. Now therefore,

  476. do not hold him guiltless,

  477. for you are a wise man.

  478. You will know

  479. what you ought to do to him,

  480. and you shall bring

  481. his gray head

  482. down with blood

  483. to shale.

  484. That's not very nice, right?

  485. Yeah, this guy cursed me,

  486. but I promised

  487. not to kill him,

  488. so when I'm gone,

  489. you kill him.

  490. Right?

  491. That's what he's saying.

  492. Now,

  493. I don't think it's a grudge.

  494. I mean,

  495. it's justice,

  496. right?

  497. The justice needs to be done

  498. on this guy, maybe,

  499. and it doesn't have to be

  500. so negative.

  501. But you may wonder,

  502. why didn't he do that

  503. in chapter 19?

  504. Right?

  505. Why not do it then?

  506. Well,

  507. if you go back

  508. to 2 Samuel,

  509. I think the answer

  510. is clear, right?

  511. Because

  512. verse 16 and 17

  513. of chapter 19,

  514. and Shimei,

  515. the son of Gerah,

  516. the Benjaminite

  517. from Bacarim,

  518. hurried to come down

  519. with the men of Judah

  520. to meet King David,

  521. and with him

  522. were a thousand men

  523. from Benjamin.

  524. And he had a lot

  525. of friends with him.

  526. And if David just

  527. had him executed

  528. there and then,

  529. those thousand men

  530. wouldn't really like it,

  531. and maybe that wouldn't

  532. really help the stability

  533. of his kingdom.

  534. So it's just politically

  535. that he says,

  536. okay,

  537. I'm not going to deal

  538. with this opponent

  539. because I want to

  540. keep my king together.

  541. So let me not do justice,

  542. let me do what's helpful

  543. for my kingdom.

  544. Right?

  545. That's the problem.

  546. And you see that even more

  547. with the next story,

  548. right?

  549. With Ziba and Mephibosheth.

  550. Now again,

  551. that's something we've seen

  552. over the past few sermons,

  553. right?

  554. Do you remember

  555. Mephibosheth?

  556. He was the grandson

  557. of Saul,

  558. who was kind of

  559. David's great enemy

  560. in the past,

  561. the previous king.

  562. And so,

  563. of course,

  564. you know,

  565. he comes from

  566. his enemy's family,

  567. and yet David

  568. was so wonderfully

  569. kind to him,

  570. right?

  571. He gave Mephibosheth,

  572. the guy was crippled,

  573. he was lame,

  574. such a wretch,

  575. and yet David gave him,

  576. you know,

  577. all the land of Saul,

  578. and Mephibosheth

  579. could always eat

  580. at his table.

  581. It was such grace,

  582. right?

  583. Such steadfast love.

  584. But then a few weeks ago,

  585. when David was fleeing,

  586. Tiba,

  587. who was the servant

  588. of Saul,

  589. and David told him

  590. to serve Mephibosheth now,

  591. he came to David

  592. with a lot of food,

  593. and David asked,

  594. hey,

  595. Tiba,

  596. where's Mephibosheth?

  597. And Tiba said,

  598. well,

  599. he is wringing his hands,

  600. right?

  601. He is saying,

  602. yeah,

  603. now today,

  604. the kingdom is going

  605. to come back to me,

  606. right?

  607. It felt like such a betrayal,

  608. a stab in the back.

  609. He had been so kind

  610. to Mephibosheth,

  611. and now he's

  612. stabbing him in the back.

  613. But now,

  614. Mephibosheth himself

  615. shows up,

  616. right?

  617. Verse 20,

  618. and Mephibosheth,

  619. the son of Saul,

  620. came down to meet

  621. the king at 24.

  622. He had neither

  623. taken care of his feet,

  624. nor trimmed his beard,

  625. nor washed his clothes

  626. from the day

  627. the king departed

  628. until the day

  629. he came back in safety.

  630. Mephibosheth,

  631. you know,

  632. he looks terrible

  633. because,

  634. you know,

  635. all this time

  636. he hadn't taken care

  637. of himself

  638. because he was

  639. clearly so upset

  640. that David had to leave.

  641. And David asked,

  642. hey,

  643. why didn't you

  644. come with me?

  645. Well,

  646. I'm lame,

  647. right?

  648. I can't just go.

  649. I need a donkey.

  650. And I asked my servant,

  651. give me a donkey,

  652. but instead he went off

  653. to you and lied,

  654. right?

  655. Because Siva said,

  656. yeah,

  657. he was just lying

  658. about Mephibosheth.

  659. Everyone can see,

  660. look,

  661. Mephibosheth,

  662. he was so loyal

  663. to David.

  664. And Siva was just a liar

  665. who just thought

  666. this is a good opportunity

  667. to get all the land

  668. for me,

  669. right?

  670. How does David

  671. deal with it?

  672. Well,

  673. what should he do?

  674. It's very obvious,

  675. right?

  676. He should get everything

  677. back to Mephibosheth.

  678. And Siva needs

  679. to be punished.

  680. Instead,

  681. verse 29,

  682. and the king

  683. said to him,

  684. why speak any more

  685. of your affairs?

  686. I have decided

  687. you and Siva

  688. shall divide the land

  689. half and half.

  690. That's not really just,

  691. right?

  692. That's completely unjust.

  693. Clearly,

  694. Siva is a liar.

  695. Mephibosheth is your

  696. loyal servant.

  697. Why would you do that?

  698. Well,

  699. again,

  700. who is Siva,

  701. right?

  702. Verse 17,

  703. 19 verse 17,

  704. that detail,

  705. and Siva,

  706. the servant

  707. of the house of Saul

  708. with his 15 sons

  709. and his 20 servants.

  710. I don't know

  711. what you think

  712. when you hear

  713. the servant of Saul.

  714. Do you think

  715. he's a cleaner?

  716. No.

  717. This guy has

  718. 20 servants himself,

  719. right?

  720. This guy is

  721. pretty powerful.

  722. He has 15 sons.

  723. That doesn't mean

  724. that,

  725. you know,

  726. he likes large families.

  727. It means he has

  728. like three or four wives,

  729. right?

  730. Which is kind of

  731. the status symbol.

  732. It's like having

  733. three Ferraris,

  734. right?

  735. back then.

  736. So basically,

  737. this guy is just

  738. very powerful.

  739. And David doesn't

  740. want to cross him.

  741. Hey,

  742. here's a crippled guy.

  743. Here's a really

  744. powerful man.

  745. Let me do

  746. half and half,

  747. right?

  748. It's just corruption.

  749. Let me favor

  750. the powerful

  751. so that,

  752. that is what

  753. David's doing.

  754. And so,

  755. the guy of

  756. justice

  757. and righteousness,

  758. well,

  759. he's basically

  760. just the

  761. compromised king.

  762. Right?

  763. We see David

  764. here.

  765. We thought

  766. David's back.

  767. He is back,

  768. but he's a

  769. compromised king.

  770. No more justice,

  771. no more

  772. self-interest

  773. instead of justice.

  774. We thought

  775. he's back,

  776. but he's not.

  777. So sad,

  778. right?

  779. The old

  780. David

  781. is gone.

  782. He's a

  783. compromised king.

  784. And that's

  785. such a

  786. shock,

  787. right?

  788. Because David

  789. was such a

  790. good guy.

  791. He had such

  792. an amazing

  793. track record

  794. for almost

  795. all this book,

  796. right?

  797. For almost

  798. all his life.

  799. And then there

  800. was just one

  801. thing with

  802. Bathsheba,

  803. one adultery

  804. and murder.

  805. And then,

  806. you know,

  807. but then he

  808. went through

  809. so much,

  810. right?

  811. He had to

  812. flee,

  813. all the

  814. discipline,

  815. all the

  816. consequences,

  817. the costs,

  818. and now he's

  819. back.

  820. Surely that's

  821. enough.

  822. Except it's

  823. not.

  824. Right?

  825. He will never

  826. be the same

  827. again.

  828. He's truly

  829. forgiven,

  830. restored,

  831. and yet he

  832. is never

  833. the same

  834. again.

  835. One sin

  836. and it's

  837. all lost.

  838. In a way,

  839. just like

  840. Adam and

  841. Eve,

  842. right?

  843. One rebellion,

  844. one time that

  845. they turned

  846. away from God

  847. and did their

  848. own thing,

  849. and it's

  850. all lost.

  851. Ultimately,

  852. David is just

  853. a sinful

  854. human being.

  855. I think that

  856. challenges us,

  857. right?

  858. It's not how

  859. we usually

  860. think of

  861. people.

  862. You know,

  863. when we think

  864. of bad and

  865. good,

  866. we think of

  867. this kind

  868. of spectrum,

  869. right?

  870. From really

  871. bad to really

  872. good.

  873. And,

  874. you know,

  875. David,

  876. he was pretty

  877. much here.

  878. Maybe he

  879. wasn't all

  880. the way

  881. there,

  882. but he

  883. was pretty

  884. good,

  885. right?

  886. That's what

  887. we think

  888. of people.

  889. We just,

  890. you know,

  891. we need

  892. someone good

  893. or better.

  894. So often

  895. in our life,

  896. right?

  897. Like marriage.

  898. Apparently,

  899. Hong Kong has

  900. the seventh

  901. highest divorce

  902. rate in the

  903. world.

  904. I didn't know

  905. that,

  906. depending on

  907. how you

  908. calculate it.

  909. Now,

  910. why do people

  911. divorce?

  912. Why do people

  913. not get

  914. married?

  915. So that it's

  916. easier to

  917. break up?

  918. Well,

  919. because they

  920. think,

  921. I need a

  922. better spouse,

  923. right?

  924. I need

  925. someone,

  926. well,

  927. who doesn't

  928. have these

  929. annoying habits

  930. with whom I

  931. have less

  932. disagreements,

  933. less conflict.

  934. That's what

  935. people want.

  936. I mean,

  937. there's some

  938. truth in that.

  939. I mean,

  940. there are some

  941. people,

  942. yeah,

  943. some people are

  944. better than

  945. others.

  946. And there's some

  947. people that are

  948. terrible and you

  949. should never

  950. marry them,

  951. right?

  952. You need to be

  953. very careful

  954. who you marry.

  955. But,

  956. don't forget

  957. the universality

  958. of sin.

  959. In the end,

  960. they're all

  961. sinners.

  962. And,

  963. you know,

  964. here's David,

  965. the most wonderful

  966. king,

  967. yet one sin

  968. and it's over,

  969. right?

  970. You don't need a

  971. slightly better

  972. king who's more

  973. to the right.

  974. I think the

  975. Bible's view is

  976. more like this

  977. one,

  978. right?

  979. It's binary.

  980. You have perfect

  981. and you have

  982. sinful.

  983. Now,

  984. some people are

  985. more sinful

  986. than others,

  987. but this is

  988. basically what

  989. the Bible says.

  990. And this passage

  991. shows,

  992. you know,

  993. this one sin.

  994. Clearly,

  995. David's not

  996. perfect and

  997. he's just in

  998. the other

  999. spectrum with

  1000. everyone else,

  1001. right?

  1002. The most

  1003. godly spouse

  1004. is not

  1005. perfect.

  1006. They will

  1007. sin.

  1008. The most

  1009. wonderful boss

  1010. that you

  1011. have will

  1012. make your

  1013. life difficult

  1014. at some

  1015. point at

  1016. work.

  1017. The best

  1018. kings will

  1019. let you

  1020. down.

  1021. All people

  1022. are sinners.

  1023. They're all

  1024. compromised.

  1025. Such a

  1026. sobering

  1027. truth,

  1028. right?

  1029. You know,

  1030. that's saying

  1031. nobody's

  1032. perfect.

  1033. It's kind

  1034. of encouragement.

  1035. Ah,

  1036. nobody's

  1037. perfect.

  1038. It's actually

  1039. really depressing.

  1040. Nobody's

  1041. perfect.

  1042. It's really,

  1043. yeah,

  1044. that's it.

  1045. And the

  1046. thing is,

  1047. that has

  1048. consequences.

  1049. Because the

  1050. king and

  1051. the kingdom

  1052. are linked.

  1053. Right?

  1054. If David

  1055. is a

  1056. compromised

  1057. king,

  1058. well,

  1059. what do

  1060. we get

  1061. in the

  1062. kingdom?

  1063. Now,

  1064. we don't

  1065. see that

  1066. much.

  1067. We don't

  1068. see this

  1069. wonderful

  1070. description

  1071. as we

  1072. had in

  1073. chapter

  1074. 8.

  1075. But look

  1076. at that.

  1077. We need

  1078. to look

  1079. at that

  1080. summary.

  1081. Now,

  1082. do you

  1083. know the

  1084. game

  1085. spot the

  1086. difference?

  1087. Right?

  1088. If you

  1089. have kids,

  1090. you probably

  1091. know that.

  1092. There's two

  1093. pictures,

  1094. and they

  1095. look the

  1096. same,

  1097. but if you

  1098. look carefully,

  1099. there's a few

  1100. differences.

  1101. Right?

  1102. Well,

  1103. let's do that

  1104. with the

  1105. summary at

  1106. the end of

  1107. chapter 20,

  1108. and the

  1109. other one

  1110. at the

  1111. end of

  1112. chapter 8.

  1113. I've put

  1114. them here

  1115. on the

  1116. screen.

  1117. I've also

  1118. in the

  1119. bulletin

  1120. at the

  1121. bottom,

  1122. I've printed

  1123. it,

  1124. so if you're

  1125. sitting at

  1126. the back,

  1127. but you

  1128. have a

  1129. bulletin.

  1130. So just

  1131. have a

  1132. look.

  1133. Read it

  1134. through.

  1135. I mean,

  1136. sometimes things

  1137. have been

  1138. swapped around,

  1139. but there's

  1140. three major

  1141. differences.

  1142. See if

  1143. anyone can

  1144. find them.

  1145. If you

  1146. find the

  1147. differences,

  1148. raise your

  1149. hand.

  1150. Is the

  1151. kingdom

  1152. really the

  1153. same?

  1154. Don't

  1155. be shy.

  1156. Anyone?

  1157. Anything

  1158. that's

  1159. missing?

  1160. Anything

  1161. that's

  1162. been

  1163. added?

  1164. No one?

  1165. Oscar.

  1166. Yeah.

  1167. Exactly.

  1168. Chapter 8,

  1169. it started

  1170. with,

  1171. and David

  1172. reigned

  1173. over all

  1174. Israel,

  1175. and he

  1176. did justice

  1177. and equity

  1178. for all

  1179. the people.

  1180. David isn't

  1181. even mentioned

  1182. in the other

  1183. one, right?

  1184. It's just his

  1185. officials.

  1186. David is like

  1187. a shadow.

  1188. He's not

  1189. even there.

  1190. No justice,

  1191. no equity

  1192. is not

  1193. even mentioned.

  1194. Anything

  1195. else?

  1196. Yeah,

  1197. Faith?

  1198. Yeah.

  1199. Adoram was

  1200. over the

  1201. forced labor.

  1202. Maybe you

  1203. see it in

  1204. the middle.

  1205. So now

  1206. we have

  1207. a department

  1208. of forced

  1209. labor,

  1210. a department

  1211. of slavery

  1212. in the

  1213. cabinet.

  1214. Right?

  1215. I don't

  1216. know what

  1217. you think.

  1218. That doesn't

  1219. sound very

  1220. good.

  1221. There's

  1222. one more

  1223. maybe at

  1224. the end.

  1225. Chapter 8,

  1226. David's

  1227. sons were

  1228. priests,

  1229. and David's

  1230. sons are

  1231. not mentioned

  1232. in the

  1233. other one.

  1234. Maybe

  1235. because between

  1236. the two,

  1237. three of

  1238. David's

  1239. sons have

  1240. died.

  1241. But yeah,

  1242. let's put it

  1243. here.

  1244. But here

  1245. we go,

  1246. right?

  1247. We have a

  1248. kingdom of

  1249. justice and

  1250. equity.

  1251. And now

  1252. we have a

  1253. place with

  1254. forced labor.

  1255. Right?

  1256. It's just not

  1257. the same.

  1258. If you read

  1259. carefully,

  1260. man,

  1261. in chapter

  1262. 8,

  1263. you saw

  1264. that it

  1265. was so

  1266. wonderful.

  1267. I want

  1268. to live

  1269. there.

  1270. But the

  1271. opposite is

  1272. also true.

  1273. Right?

  1274. Now you

  1275. see David's

  1276. kingdom,

  1277. and you

  1278. think,

  1279. man,

  1280. I don't

  1281. want to

  1282. live there.

  1283. Well,

  1284. forced labor.

  1285. What a

  1286. terrible place.

  1287. The glory

  1288. is gone.

  1289. Right?

  1290. And so

  1291. basically,

  1292. yeah,

  1293. we have here

  1294. the broken

  1295. kingdom.

  1296. And no

  1297. longer the

  1298. godly king

  1299. and the

  1300. glorious

  1301. kingdom,

  1302. we have

  1303. the

  1304. compromised

  1305. king and

  1306. the

  1307. broken

  1308. kingdom.

  1309. That is,

  1310. if you

  1311. look carefully,

  1312. it looks

  1313. good,

  1314. it looks

  1315. back,

  1316. and yet,

  1317. it's gone.

  1318. Right?

  1319. It's so true of

  1320. life,

  1321. right?

  1322. The king

  1323. leads to the

  1324. kingdom.

  1325. You know,

  1326. if you have a

  1327. sinful spouse,

  1328. you're going to

  1329. have problems in

  1330. your marriage.

  1331. If you have a

  1332. boss and

  1333. colleagues who

  1334. fall short,

  1335. you have a

  1336. job that falls

  1337. short.

  1338. And we

  1339. often don't

  1340. get it.

  1341. We keep

  1342. changing.

  1343. I had this

  1344. friend of

  1345. mine,

  1346. like,

  1347. a few years

  1348. ago.

  1349. Every time I

  1350. met him,

  1351. he had a

  1352. different job.

  1353. That was in

  1354. the time that

  1355. the job market

  1356. was better.

  1357. But yeah,

  1358. why?

  1359. Well,

  1360. my boss is a

  1361. jerk,

  1362. next job.

  1363. Oh,

  1364. my colleagues

  1365. are annoying,

  1366. next job.

  1367. But the

  1368. customers are so

  1369. frustrating.

  1370. Right?

  1371. He was never

  1372. happy,

  1373. and he kept on

  1374. changing.

  1375. He kept

  1376. looking for

  1377. the perfect

  1378. job,

  1379. and he

  1380. never got

  1381. it,

  1382. because,

  1383. yeah,

  1384. people are

  1385. sinful,

  1386. and therefore

  1387. you will have

  1388. a bad

  1389. experience,

  1390. right?

  1391. People fleeing

  1392. the country,

  1393. so many people

  1394. fleeing or

  1395. emigrating because

  1396. hopefully it's

  1397. better somewhere

  1398. else.

  1399. Sometimes that's

  1400. really true.

  1401. If you want to

  1402. escape the war

  1403. in Ukraine,

  1404. that's a really

  1405. good thing to

  1406. do.

  1407. And yet,

  1408. nowhere is

  1409. perfect,

  1410. right?

  1411. Wherever you

  1412. move to,

  1413. the people are

  1414. sinners,

  1415. the people in

  1416. charge,

  1417. they don't

  1418. follow God,

  1419. it will never

  1420. be perfect.

  1421. And so wherever

  1422. you look for

  1423. your hope,

  1424. it's not going

  1425. to work.

  1426. And those of

  1427. reality,

  1428. I don't know

  1429. what you're

  1430. going to face

  1431. tomorrow,

  1432. but I can

  1433. tell you it's

  1434. going to be

  1435. disappointing,

  1436. right?

  1437. People will

  1438. sin against you

  1439. and you will

  1440. have a bad

  1441. experience.

  1442. That's life

  1443. in this world,

  1444. right?

  1445. Because,

  1446. yeah,

  1447. just like the

  1448. king and the

  1449. kingdom are

  1450. linked,

  1451. people lead

  1452. to your

  1453. experience.

  1454. Some days are

  1455. better than

  1456. others,

  1457. but it's never

  1458. perfect.

  1459. And I'm not

  1460. even talking

  1461. about your

  1462. own sin,

  1463. right?

  1464. This is about

  1465. the people we

  1466. hope in,

  1467. the people we

  1468. look to.

  1469. I mean,

  1470. so much of

  1471. problems in

  1472. my life,

  1473. I'm part of

  1474. the problem,

  1475. right?

  1476. But we're not

  1477. talking about

  1478. that.

  1479. And,

  1480. you know,

  1481. it gets even

  1482. worse.

  1483. Because the

  1484. kingdom is not

  1485. just broken.

  1486. In a way,

  1487. having in chapter

  1488. 20 another

  1489. rebellion isn't

  1490. that good.

  1491. But especially

  1492. that cry of

  1493. Sheba in verse

  1494. 1,

  1495. right?

  1496. we have no

  1497. portion in

  1498. David.

  1499. We have no

  1500. inheritance in

  1501. the son of

  1502. Jesse.

  1503. Every man to

  1504. his ten

  1505. so Israel.

  1506. Does it sound

  1507. familiar to

  1508. anyone?

  1509. Probably not.

  1510. Well,

  1511. come with me to

  1512. 1 Kings chapter

    1 Kings 12 chapter mention

  1513. 12.

  1514. I mean,

  1515. what happens

  1516. in,

  1517. what happens

  1518. to David,

  1519. after David

  1520. came Solomon,

  1521. he had this

  1522. glorious kingdom,

  1523. although he

  1524. then turned

  1525. away from the

  1526. Lord.

  1527. And then we

  1528. had,

  1529. what's it,

  1530. but after him

  1531. came Rehoboam.

  1532. And God had

  1533. said under him

  1534. the kingdom

  1535. would split.

  1536. And Rehoboam,

  1537. he was a bit

  1538. of an idiot,

  1539. right?

  1540. So the people

  1541. came to him

  1542. that, hey,

1543. we had it a bit

  1544. tough under

  1545. Solomon,

  1546. can you make

  1547. it lighter?

  1548. And he asked

  1549. for advice,

  1550. and his friend

  1551. said to him,

  1552. oh, just

  1553. tough them.

  1554. And so that's

  1555. what he said,

  1556. right?

  1557. Well, you think

  1558. my father's tough,

  1559. I'm going to be

  1560. even tougher.

  1561. What did they

  1562. say?

  1563. 1 Kings chapter

    1 Kings 12:16

  1564. 12, verse 16.

  1565. And when all

  1566. Israel saw that

  1567. the king did

  1568. not listen to

  1569. them, the

  1570. people answered

  1571. the king,

  1572. what portion

  1573. do we have

  1574. in David?

  1575. We have no

  1576. inheritance in

  1577. the son of

  1578. Jesse.

  1579. To your

  1580. ten, so

  1581. Israel.

  1582. Look to your

  1583. own house,

  1584. David.

  1585. It's pretty

  1586. much exactly

  1587. the same

  1588. thing as

  1589. begging to

  1590. Samuel.

  1591. Exactly the

  1592. same words.

  1593. And even

  1594. more, what

  1595. does Rehoboam

  1596. do?

  1597. He's not a

  1598. very good

  1599. diplomat, right?

  1600. Verse 18.

  1601. Then King

  1602. Rehoboam

  1603. sent Adoram,

  1604. who was

  1605. taskmaster

  1606. over the

  1607. forced labor,

  1608. and all

  1609. Israel

  1610. stoned him

  1611. to death

  1612. with stones.

  1613. It's not

  1614. really good,

  1615. right?

  1616. If people

  1617. are complaining

  1618. that you're

  1619. too tough,

  1620. don't send

  1621. a chief

  1622. slave driver.

  1623. But basically,

  1624. yeah.

  1625. But the

  1626. same Adoram.

  1627. Which is

  1628. interesting,

  1629. right?

  1630. So back

  1631. into Samuel,

  1632. it's like we

  1633. have a cameo.

  1634. We have a

  1635. little foreshadowing,

  1636. right?

  1637. What happens in

  1638. chapter 12,

  1639. this big event,

  1640. the split of the

  1641. kingdom,

  1642. how the kingdom

  1643. fell apart,

  1644. we get that

  1645. kind of

  1646. foreshadowed.

  1647. We get a

  1648. cameo into

  1649. Samuel.

  1650. Marvel movies,

  1651. you often have

  1652. foreshadowing,

  1653. you often have

  1654. cameos,

  1655. because people

  1656. expect you to

  1657. see all the

  1658. movies.

  1659. And that's

  1660. kind of here.

  1661. And you may

  1662. think, oh man,

  1663. this is quite

  1664. complicated.

  1665. Just to say,

  1666. the only thing I

  1667. do for this is

  1668. just read my

  1669. Bible,

  1670. right?

  1671. If you read

  1672. the Bible

  1673. every year,

  1674. every two

  1675. years,

  1676. and you

  1677. kind of

  1678. remember what

  1679. it says,

  1680. the writer

  1681. wants you to

  1682. pick up on

  1683. these things.

  1684. It has nothing

  1685. to do with

  1686. knowing Hebrew

  1687. or seminary.

  1688. You know,

  1689. if you notice

  1690. a verse,

  1691. hey, this is

  1692. very similar

  1693. to that verse,

  1694. go back and

  1695. check it.

  1696. But that's

  1697. what the

  1698. writer wants

  1699. you to see.

  1700. Man,

  1701. the kingdom,

  1702. you know,

  1703. the doom of

  1704. the kingdom

  1705. is foreshadowed

  1706. here.

  1707. And so we

  1708. have not just

  1709. a broken

  1710. kingdom,

  1711. we have a

  1712. doomed kingdom.

  1713. A doomed

  1714. kingdom.

  1715. Right?

  1716. The readers

  1717. know David's

  1718. kingdom didn't

  1719. last.

  1720. But where

  1721. did it go

  1722. wrong?

  1723. You know,

  1724. we've read

  1725. through kings.

  1726. Was it

  1727. Manasseh and

  1728. his idolatry?

  1729. Was it

  1730. Ahaz and

  1731. his politics?

  1732. Was it

  1733. Solomon and

  1734. his 700

  1735. wives?

  1736. Well, the

  1737. writer is

  1738. hinting,

  1739. actually,

  1740. already under

  1741. David.

  1742. Under David,

  1743. it was basically

  1744. already doomed.

  1745. And there's

  1746. some truth

  1747. that, you

  1748. know,

  1749. there's great

  1750. kings and

  1751. bad kings,

  1752. and David

  1753. was pretty

  1754. good, and

  1755. in the rest

  1756. of kings,

  1757. he's always

  1758. the standard.

  1759. All the

  1760. other kings,

  1761. well, they're

  1762. as good as

  1763. David, or

  1764. not as good

  1765. as David,

  1766. or nowhere

  1767. like David,

  1768. and God

  1769. was gracious.

  1770. You know,

  1771. 400 years,

  1772. the kingdom

  1773. went on and

  1774. on and on.

  1775. God was

  1776. merciful,

  1777. yet the writer

  1778. is saying,

  1779. already under

  1780. David,

  1781. it was doomed.

  1782. Already under

  1783. David, not

  1784. Manasseh,

  1785. not Ahaz,

  1786. not Solomon,

  1787. as soon as

  1788. David sinned,

  1789. it was basically

  1790. done.

  1791. Because,

  1792. ultimately,

  1793. sin brings

  1794. judgment.

  1795. Right?

  1796. We've seen how

  1797. awful sin is,

  1798. and as soon as

  1799. sin comes in,

  1800. it's doomed.

  1801. Like we had

  1802. with COVID,

  1803. right?

  1804. As soon as

  1805. there was one

  1806. Omicron case

  1807. in a place,

  1808. you know,

  1809. everyone's going

  1810. to get it.

  1811. And that's

  1812. basically the

  1813. message here.

  1814. It's doomed.

  1815. Even the best

  1816. human kingdoms,

  1817. the best

  1818. institutions,

  1819. the best

  1820. marriages,

  1821. the best

  1822. jobs,

  1823. they can run

  1824. on a bit,

  1825. some better

  1826. than others.

  1827. Everything in

  1828. the ultimately

  1829. is doomed.

  1830. Right?

  1831. Where there's

  1832. sin,

  1833. God wants a

  1834. perfect world.

  1835. Everything that's

  1836. less than perfect

  1837. will go one

  1838. day.

  1839. It's doomed.

  1840. So that is where

  1841. we're ending,

  1842. right?

  1843. The Bible warns

  1844. you everything's

  1845. broken.

  1846. Everywhere there's

  1847. sin and everything

  1848. is doomed.

  1849. It's so depressing,

  1850. right?

  1851. We thought there

  1852. would be a happy

  1853. ending here in

  1854. 2 Samuel.

  1855. Actually,

  1856. there isn't.

  1857. Actually,

  1858. David,

  1859. once he sinned,

  1860. it was over.

  1861. Now we need

  1862. a better king,

  1863. right?

  1864. We need to go

  1865. back to this

  1866. spectrum.

  1867. We don't need

  1868. someone who is

  1869. further along that

  1870. little spectrum

  1871. on the left.

  1872. We need someone

  1873. on the right.

  1874. We need a king

  1875. who is not just

  1876. less sinful.

  1877. We need someone

  1878. who is perfect.

  1879. If he is perfect,

  1880. if he never sins,

  1881. there will never

  1882. be judgment.

  1883. He can bring the

  1884. perfect kingdom

  1885. that we all need

  1886. that lasts forever.

  1887. And it's no

  1888. surprise that

  1889. that's Jesus,

  1890. right?

  1891. That is the king

  1892. we need because

  1893. everything else

  1894. will fail.

  1895. Everything else

  1896. will not work.

  1897. He's the only one

  1898. who can save,

  1899. the only one

  1900. who can bring

  1901. the kingdom.

  1902. So the right

  1903. response,

  1904. yeah,

  1905. is to turn

  1906. from him,

  1907. to turn to him,

  1908. right?

  1909. To turn away

  1910. from the things

  1911. in the world

  1912. that we know

  1913. are not going

  1914. to work,

  1915. that we know

  1916. we're not going

  1917. to satisfy,

  1918. and turn to him.

  1919. That's what we're

  1920. going to do

  1921. in a moment

  1922. with the baptisms,

  1923. right?

  1924. All these people,

  1925. people who saw

  1926. that there was

1927. no hope in the world

  1928. and so they've

  1929. turned to Jesus

  1930. and found life

  1931. in him.

  1932. But not just

  1933. one day,

  1934. no,

1935. every day of our lives.

  1936. Right?

  1937. We need Jesus

  1938. so much

  1939. because there's

  1940. no other hope

  1941. in the world.

  1942. well,

  1943. let's pray

  1944. and sing.

  1945. Our Father,

  1946. thank you for

  1947. this reality check.

  1948. Father,

  1949. there are many

1950. good things in the world

  1951. and yet nothing's

  1952. perfect.

  1953. So much of life,

  1954. there's frustrations,

  1955. there's disappointments

  1956. because ultimately

  1957. this is a world

  1958. where people sin,

  1959. where we sin,

  1960. where things go wrong.

  1961. Father,

  1962. would we see that?

  1963. Would we not chase

  1964. after other things,

1965. think that we can find

  1966. just something better here?

  1967. Would we see that

  1968. it's only Jesus

1969. who can make things right,

  1970. only Jesus who's perfect,

1971. only Jesus who obeyed you

  1972. perfectly on the cross

1973. when he died for our sins,

1974. only Jesus who can bring

  1975. us back to you?

  1976. Lord,

1977. would we look to him?

  1978. Lord,

  1979. give us faith,

  1980. whoever we are here,

  1981. wherever we're at,

  1982. bring us to Jesus.

1983. In his name we pray.

  1984. Amen.
