  1. I'm coming to our scripture reading now and I'm going to invite one of our congregation, Anne Norrie, to come and to read to us some verses from Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  2. He set it up on the plain of Jura in the province of Babylon.

  3. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent together the satraps, the prefects and the governors, the counsellors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates and all the officials of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  4. Then the satraps, the prefects and the governors, the counsellors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  5. And they stood before the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  6. And the herald proclaimed aloud,

  7. You are commanded, O peoples, nations and languages, that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe and every other kind of music,

  8. you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

  9. And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be cast into a burning, fiery furnace.

  10. Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe and every kind of music,

  11. all the peoples, nations and languages fell down and worshiped the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  12. In verse 13,

  13. Then Nebuchadnezzar, in furious rage, commanded that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be brought.

  14. So they brought these men before the king.

  15. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them,

  16. Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up?

  17. Now, if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe and every kind of music,

  18. to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good.

  19. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning, fiery furnace.

  20. And who is the God who shall deliver you out of my hands?

  21. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego answered and said to the king,

  22. O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.

  23. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning, fiery furnace,

  24. and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.

  25. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.

  26. Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury,

  27. and the expression of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

  28. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated,

  29. and he ordered some of the mighty men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego

  30. and to cast them into the burning, fiery furnace.

  31. Then these men were bound in their cloaks, their tunics, their hats and their other garments,

  32. and they were thrown into the burning, fiery furnace.

  33. Because the king's order was urgent and the furnace overheated,

  34. the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

  35. And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, fell bound into the burning, fiery furnace.

  36. Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste.

  37. He declared to his counselors,

  38. Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?

  39. They answered and said to the king,

  40. True, O king.

  41. He answered and said,

  42. But I see four men, unbound, walking in the midst of the fire,

  43. and they are not hurt,

  44. and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.

  45. Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning, fiery furnace.

  46. He declared,

  47. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,

  48. come out and come here.

  49. Then Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out from the fire,

  50. and the satraps, the prefects, the governors and the king's counselors

  51. gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men.

  52. The hair of their heads was not singed,

  53. their cloaks were not harmed,

  54. and no smell of fire had come upon them.

  55. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said,

  56. Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,

  57. who has sent his angel and delivered his servants,

  58. who trusted in him and set aside the king's command

  59. and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own god.

  60. Therefore I make a decree,

  61. any people, nation or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego

  62. shall be torn limb from limb and their houses laid in ruins,

  63. for there is no other God who is able to rescue in this way.

  64. Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego

  65. in the province of Babylon.

  66. Amen.

  67. We're working our way through the book of Daniel on Sunday mornings,

  68. and in 605 BC, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon,

  69. sacked Jerusalem,

  70. and he took a number of young men,

  71. especially from the professional classes and others,

  72. to Babylon to make Babylon into an even greater city than it was.

  73. And so there, the Lord's people are put into exile.

  74. They're taken from the city of God, Jerusalem,

  75. and sent to exile in the city of Babylon.

  76. And so exile is a condition across the Bible.

  77. Exile is really just the state of not being where God made you to be.

  78. Exile is any time you are away from the true city of God,

  79. living in what St. Augustine called the city of man.

  80. And so there's a sense in which we're all in exile,

  81. because we are not living in the garden city of God that he made us to live in,

  82. to dwell with him in his presence.

  83. And so until Jesus comes again, this life is an exilic life.

  84. And the New Testament says that every single Christian,

  85. every single believer in the Lord is living in exile,

  86. living in the midst of a Babylonian age.

  87. And the question we've been asking every single week of this passage,

  88. of this book is, how does a believer in the Lord,

  89. if you're a believer today, how do you live faithfully,

  90. with wisdom, with hope, in the midst of exile, in the midst of Babylon?

  91. Another way to say it is that to live in exile is to live in a time and an age

  92. before Jesus comes again, where you're surrounded by idolatry,

  93. where people in the city center their lives on something other than the true God.

  94. And the Bible says that's not just a city problem,

  95. that's a problem in every human heart, that we're all struggling with that,

  96. centering our lives on something else than the real God,

  97. than the true God that made us.

  98. And that's the condition of being Babylonized or living in exile.

  99. So let me say it like this, an idol is an idol.

  100. You know you have an idol when there is anything in your life

  101. that is more important to you than God.

  102. And you know you have an idol when there's anything in this life

  103. that absorbs your heart more than God does,

  104. that takes your imagination over more than God does.

  105. Anything that you chase after,

  106. that you want that thing to give you what only God can give you,

  107. that's idolatry.

  108. And this is a book about that.

  109. It's a wisdom book as well.

  110. And it's a book that's saying how do you live wisely in an age

  111. where you're surrounded by idols, always being tempted and drawn back to idolatry,

  112. and you're wrestling with the idolatry in your own heart.

  113. In Daniel chapter 1, Nebuchadnezzar put Daniel and all these folks into a formation program,

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  114. and it's so that for three years they were going to be trained in the wisdom of Babylon.

  115. And instead, at the end of that story, God gave Daniel and his friends great wisdom.

  116. And so you see from the beginning, this is a book of where does real wisdom come from?

  117. And the story tells us it's a gift from God.

  118. You've got to look to God to get wisdom.

  119. Three principles we've already looked at for how to live faithfully in the midst of a Babylonian age.

  120. I can give you them in 30 seconds.

  121. Don't worry, I won't re-preach them.

  122. Number 1 and 2 was Daniel chapter 1, be in the world but not of it.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  123. How do you live faithfully in a Babylonian age?

  124. Be in the world but not of it.

  125. Don't separate yourself from the city.

  126. God put you here.

  127. Seek the peace of the city.

  128. Love Edinburgh just like Daniel loved Babylon.

  129. And yet, don't be of it.

  130. Don't give your heart away.

  131. Don't assimilate.

  132. Don't give your heart to idols.

  133. Fight, resist, starve your idols to death.

  134. Principle 3 last week, get wisdom.

  135. And wisdom is just the ability to know how to navigate such a complex world

  136. with courage, with justice, with righteousness.

  137. Let's find a fourth today.

  138. What's the fourth principle?

  139. We'll find it through looking at the image, the furnace, and the fourth man.

  140. So first, the image.

  141. Now this is a famous story, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  142. It's a bedtime story, though it contains some pretty horrible details.

  143. I remember growing up watching the Veggie Tales version of this story.

  144. Some of you that grew up in the church may know that.

  145. Instead of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, it was Rack, Shack, and Benny.

  146. I also listened to Eric Alexander preach through Daniel as I'm studying for the series,

  147. the famous Scottish minister of the past generation.

  148. And he said that his mother at night would say,

  149. let me tell you the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and off to bed you go.

  150. So I like that.

  151. That's good.

  152. We know that lots of people know this story, the story of the fiery furnace.

  153. And maybe you don't, and that's okay.

  154. But because of that, we tend to make this story about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  155. By the way, Daniel is nowhere to be found in this story.

  156. We take a pause from Daniel himself here.

  157. And of course, this is a story about a test of faith.

  158. And the question here is,

  159. will you refuse to bow down to the golden image in the culture before you,

  160. even if it costs you everything?

  161. Would you refuse to bow down to whatever golden image the culture is putting before you,

  162. even if it's going to cost you your life?

  163. That's the clear question of the chapter, and we'll get there in just a minute.

  164. But before we get there, when you look at all the stories in Daniel,

  165. they are all actually bookended by not Daniel, not Shadrach, not Meshach, not Abednego, but Nebuchadnezzar.

  166. He's, in some sense, the central character.

  167. And this story starts with Nebuchadnezzar and ends with Nebuchadnezzar.

  168. And we're following Nebuchadnezzar's story.

  169. As much as we are anybody else in this book.

  170. And so, in verse 1, we find out Nebuchadnezzar makes an image of gold,

  171. whose height is 60 cubits.

  172. That's 90 feet, 9 feet wide.

  173. And there's a backstory here.

  174. What's the backstory?

  175. That's that, if you were here last week, you'll remember that Nebuchadnezzar had a dream.

  176. And in the dream, he saw an image.

  177. But in the dream, the image had a head of gold,

  178. and then a body of different materials, all the way down to clay feet.

  179. And Daniel said, Nebuchadnezzar, God is telling you, you are the head of gold.

  180. But you've got clay feet.

  181. Your kingdom's not going to last.

  182. It was a thousand-year prophecy telling Nebuchadnezzar, you are not the climax of history.

  183. You are the greatest power of world history thus far.

  184. But you need to humble yourself before the real God.

  185. You flip over to chapter 3, and what happens?

  186. After having a dream where he was the head of gold in the dream,

  187. now he makes a statue that's 90 feet tall of all gold.

  188. And that means that what Nebuchadnezzar's doing is he's rejecting God's prophecy.

  189. He's doubling down.

  190. He's saying, your God said, my kingdom's going to crumble.

  191. I'm here to say, my kingdom will last forever.

  192. He turned just the head of gold from the dream that had a chest of silver,

  193. it had a core of bronze, it had legs of iron.

  194. He's saying, no, no, no, it's gold from top to bottom.

  195. For a thousand years, my kingdom will reign.

  196. He's doubling down.

  197. He's saying, though your God says he raises up kingdoms and he casts them down,

  198. I'm saying, I will last forever.

  199. That's what he's doing here.

  200. And that means that Nebuchadnezzar's response in this story is one where there is zero change

  201. at the level of the heart.

  202. So he's heard the prophecy.

  203. He's acknowledged it.

  204. He was called to humility.

  205. And he's saying, I reject that.

  206. And he's doubling down on his pride and saying, I will not change.

  207. It's not an intellectual issue.

  208. It's a heart issue for him.

  209. And probably a good amount of time has passed.

  210. And he's been able to think about it.

  211. And he said, no, my kingdom is my God.

  212. And so he builds this great statue.

  213. Now the people, if you read the commentators on this, they will ask, what is the image?

  214. That's one of the famous questions people ask about Daniel 3.

  215. What exactly is this statue?

  216. And famously, if you read through the whole text carefully, you will find that it never

  217. tells you.

  218. It doesn't say a word about what the image actually is.

  219. What was this image?

  220. Some people go down to verse 14 and they say, when Nebuchadnezzar says, is it true of Shadrach,

  221. Meshach, and Abednego that you won't bow down, you won't serve my gods or worship the golden

  222. image I've set up?

  223. You go to a verse like that and it's saying, when these three refuse to bow down before the

  224. image, Nebuchadnezzar says, you won't worship my gods or the image.

  225. Is he saying the image was a representation of all the gods that he worshiped, all the

  226. gods of Babylon in sort of one go?

  227. Maybe.

  228. What that would mean is that Babylon is a pluralist society, just like Rome was, just like

  229. Edinburgh or London or New York.

  230. And that's that Nebuchadnezzar was saying, you can worship any god you want in my kingdom,

  231. but the one thing you must not do is worship one god only.

  232. I'm coming after you because I've said, look, I don't care if you worship the Lord, Yahweh,

  233. but you better come and bow down toward all the gods as well.

  234. So they're being pressured because of pluralism.

  235. What does pluralism say?

  236. It says, you can worship whatever god you want to in private, but when you come into public,

  237. you need to worship and bow down to the gods of the age.

  238. That's pluralism.

  239. And I think that is there, but think about the dream.

  240. What is Nebuchadnezzar doing?

  241. He's saying, Daniel, you told me it was just the head of gold, but I'm here to say it's

  242. the whole body.

  243. And I think what the image really is, it may not literally be an image of Nebuchadnezzar

  244. himself, but it is at least an image of his kingdom, of all that represents him, of his

  245. glory, his power, his might, everything we talked about last week.

  246. If you were here, he said, you are the golden head.

  247. And Nebuchadnezzar says, no, I am the golden body.

  248. And my kingdom is going to last forever and ever.

  249. And that means, that means that the image is a visible representation of his own self-glory

  250. and his own attempt to divinize himself and make himself into a god.

  251. And I think that this passage is trying to talk to every single one of us today and help us

  252. to realize that the essence of sin, the essence of all that is wrong in this world, is that

  253. every human heart wants to divinize itself.

  254. And really, at the bottom of all of our souls, there is a 90-foot golden statue that says,

  255. I want to be my own god.

  256. I want to self-justify.

  257. I don't want to be saved.

  258. I want to save myself.

  259. I don't want to bow down to the real god.

  260. I want others to bow down to me.

  261. And Nebuchadnezzar is showing us the real essence of sin here.

  262. That's, it's self-glory.

  263. It's playing god.

  264. I love what St. Augustine, it's hard not to quote St. Augustine a lot in this series because

  265. he wrote so much about this very issue and theme of idolatry.

  266. He says it like this, what is pride but a perverse desire for height?

  267. I've said that many times.

  268. What is pride but a diverse, perverse desire for height?

  269. You know?

  270. No, of course.

  271. What does he mean by that?

  272. Not physical height.

  273. He says, what is pride but a perverse desire for height in forsaking the real god, him,

  274. to whom the soul ought to cleave?

  275. And then he says, instead of, instead, we believe we are the beginning and the purpose of our own lives.

  276. That self-divinization, it's at the heart of all idolatry.

  277. It's underneath the worship we give to money or power, romance, whatever it may be.

  278. It's actually that we want to be God.

  279. We want to play God.

  280. And we all build these statues in our hearts to ourselves.

  281. Think about it, how it expresses itself, I think, in small ways all the time in our lives.

  282. Can you see yourself in this?

  283. We need to be right.

  284. We need to be able to look down our noses at the other political party, at those others for their morality, their theology, whatever it may be.

  285. We need to be able to catch other people making mistakes.

  286. I need to be able to catch other people making mistakes and point it out.

  287. We need to post that picture.

  288. We can't stop taking pictures and say, I need to post this picture to curate my own golden statue, the image of who I want people to think I am.

  289. We need, we crave to say, I'm so busy.

  290. How are you?

  291. I'm so busy.

  292. Because being exhaustion by way of busyness is a badge of honor by way that we think we're more important than everybody else is because we're so busy.

  293. We have so much to do, right?

  294. And these are just the smallest ways that you can see that there is a golden statue to ourselves, of ourselves, at the bottom of every single heart.

  295. Augustine, again, in his famous book, The Confessions, he tells, it's his testimony, really, his story.

  296. And he tells the story of when he was a little kid and he was out in the forest with some other guys and he would take pears from this orchard.

  297. And he says, I would take the pears and in an age of hunger, I would not eat them.

  298. In an age of hunger, I would not hoard them.

  299. In an age of hunger, I wouldn't stash them away for when the famine was coming from my family.

  300. He said, I stole the pears and I would just throw them on the ground.

  301. And he said, I'll just get rid of them.

  302. And he said, and here's how he describes it.

  303. This is a paraphrase.

  304. He said, I just wanted to do it to know I could do it.

  305. But I wanted to be able to say, I'm powerful, I'm independent, I make my own rules.

  306. And then he writes, every sin is ultimately about the pleasure of playing God, of setting myself against divine order, against divine life, against God himself.

  307. It's the essence of sin.

  308. It's not just an issue of bad habits in the Bible.

  309. The real issue is that really what's going on in the bottom of all of our souls is just a pride that worships self.

  310. And Nebuchadnezzar is putting that on display for us.

  311. Now, I've got to move on.

  312. This is our long point.

  313. We have two short points.

  314. But if you remember from week one, the Tower of Babel, Genesis 11, was the beginning of the Babylonian kingdom.

  315. The Tower of Babel is proto-Babylon.

  316. It's where Babylon was first established.

  317. And there, what happened?

  318. They built this great tower to the heavens.

  319. They said, let us make a name for ourselves.

  320. And who was there?

  321. All the nations, all the peoples gathered around this great image.

  322. It was a collective image, a golden statue to the heavens, whereby they said, we will go to the heavens.

  323. We will make a name for ourselves.

  324. We will slay God.

  325. Pride at the heart, the human heart of all the nations there gathered.

  326. And if you read Genesis 11 carefully, it says in a moment, it's supposed to make you laugh.

  327. I don't think many of us do when we read it.

  328. But it says that as they built a tower to the heavens, God came down to look at it.

  329. Because it was so tiny.

  330. And he had to come all the way down to find it.

  331. It was so small.

  332. And it's supposed to make you laugh in Genesis 11 when you read it.

  333. And what did God do?

  334. He scattered them.

  335. He confused their languages.

  336. He said, you will no longer gather as one people across the world because your pride gets so bad.

  337. You're so self-divinizing that I can't put you all in one place together.

  338. Nebuchadnezzar, in verses 2 to 7, gathers all the nations, all the languages, all the peoples.

  339. He builds a great tower to the heavens.

  340. You see what's happening?

  341. He's trying to reverse Babel.

  342. Babel was proto-Babylon.

  343. Here he is in the heart of Babylon.

  344. And he's building the new tower of Babel.

  345. But it's all about him.

  346. And he's bringing all the nations, all the languages, all the peoples together.

  347. And if you look at verse, as Anne read for us, you look at verse 2, 3.

  348. It says that all the prefects, governors, counselors, treasurers, justices, magistrates, officials came together to worship.

  349. And then verse 3.

  350. Then the satraps, prefects, governors, counselors, treasurers, justices, magistrates, and all the people gathered together.

  351. It happens again down at the end.

  352. And in verse 4, it says,

  353. When you hear the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, every kind of music.

  354. Again, when you hear the Lorne hype, well, not Lorne, whatever the musical instrument was.

  355. By the way, I don't think this is saying bagpipes are Babylonian per se.

  356. No.

  357. When they're played from 10.30 to 11.30 on Sunday mornings outside, they are Babylonian.

  358. Every other time, they're okay.

  359. You see, in other words, as one commentator notes,

  360. the repetition, when you read it, is supposed to sound almost like a child is telling you this story.

  361. The prefects, the governors, they all gathered.

  362. The prefects, the governors, the satraps, they all gathered.

  363. The lyre, the bagpipe, the horn.

  364. The repetition is funny.

  365. It sounds like a silly way to write a story.

  366. And the point, just like at the Tower of Babel, is to say,

  367. Look at this silly man.

  368. It's to say,

  369. You trying to reverse Babel when God had to scatter humanity.

  370. He came down and laughed because of your pride.

  371. And all the nations, all the languages, they're all gathered.

  372. God laughs.

  373. But He's patient.

  374. And the question today for all of us is really this.

  375. It's trying to get us to say,

  376. Who am I that I would put myself

  377. in the place of God?

  378. To say that I am the Lord of my own life is silly.

  379. It's silly.

  380. I didn't make myself.

  381. I'm not the point.

  382. Secondly, briefly, the furnace.

  383. Now, when you challenge the authority of a man

  384. who has built the entire world around himself,

  385. like we saw last week,

  386. he's incredibly fragile.

  387. One little poke at him.

  388. You know, all the nations can worship him,

  389. but if three men don't,

  390. he gets furious.

  391. He's very fragile.

  392. And in verse 19,

  393. it says that when they refused to bow down,

  394. his face was distorted with rage.

  395. It describes him like a beast,

  396. his face snarling with rage.

  397. And so,

  398. Shadrach, Meshach,

  399. and Abednego,

  400. Daniel's three friends,

  401. they refused to bow down.

  402. And obviously,

  403. the question here is,

  404. will you refuse to bow down

  405. to the golden image,

  406. whatever it is in this world,

  407. in this life,

  408. and remain faithful to God

  409. even at the threat of death,

  410. even if it's gonna cost you everything?

  411. Will you be faithful

  412. in the midst of a Babylonian world?

  413. But it's important to put that in context for a second.

  414. The furnace is a symbol in the Bible

  415. in a couple of ways.

  416. They're threatened.

  417. If you don't bow down,

  418. I'm gonna throw you in a fiery furnace.

  419. The furnace is a symbol.

  420. And first,

  421. it's a symbol for just that,

  422. the suffering that can come into your life

  423. because of pressure to bow down to idols.

  424. The pressure to capitulate.

  425. The pressure to receive judgment from others

  426. because you refuse to follow the gods they follow.

  427. And that's one symbol of the furnace,

  428. the clear symbol here.

  429. And anytime God's people in the Bible are in exile,

  430. that's part of the symbolism.

  431. So Deuteronomy chapter four,

  432. verse 15 to 22 says that,

  433. Egypt was the furnace in which Israel lived.

  434. It calls Egypt the furnace.

  435. Babylon's now the furnace.

  436. Any place where there are all sorts of gods around you

  437. and they're putting pressure on you to bow,

  438. lest you be judged, burned, destroyed.

  439. That is one image.

  440. I think that's getting us to ask, by the way, today,

  441. if you're a believer in this room

  442. and you're walking through life in the city,

  443. working, living,

  444. and you never feel pressure,

  445. you never feel like you're faced with a hard decision

  446. that's asking you,

  447. am I going to bow to this or stand up?

  448. If you walk through a city like Edinburgh

  449. and you never feel that pressure,

  450. it could be an indication

  451. that you're not only being in the world,

  452. but also of it,

  453. that you've already started to give over to the idols.

  454. In other words,

  455. in a city like Babylon,

  456. a city like Edinburgh,

  457. a city like Rome,

  458. a city like New York and London,

  459. there should be pressure on us

  460. where we're always having to work with wisdom

  461. to say,

  462. what do I do in this very difficult situation at work

  463. that's calling me to sin,

  464. that's calling me to bow down

  465. before something that is not the real God?

  466. But the other way that the furnace,

  467. the other thing the furnace symbolizes

  468. in the Bible is just suffering in general.

  469. So the image of the furnace

  470. is used throughout the Bible

  471. to talk about suffering.

  472. Think about the New Testament.

  473. When you enter into suffering,

  474. it can be a furnace to you

  475. either that refines you,

  476. smelts away the dross

  477. where you become a person

  478. of more hope, faith, and joy,

  479. or it will break you.

  480. It will burn you.

  481. It will destroy you.

  482. Suffering has one of those two capabilities.

  483. Here's the key moment of the whole passage,

  484. the whole sermon.

  485. It's in verses 15 to 16.

  486. And Nebuchadnezzar here says,

  487. when you are ready,

  488. you hear the sound of the music,

  489. you fall down,

  490. you worship the image that I have made.

  491. But if you don't,

  492. you will be cast into the fiery furnace.

  493. And then he asked this question,

  494. who is the God

  495. who would deliver you out of my hands?

  496. That's the question of the passage.

  497. Who is the God

  498. who could deliver you out of the furnace?

  499. Who is the God

  500. who could deliver you out of suffering?

  501. Who is the God

  502. who could deliver you

  503. out of,

  504. even in some places,

  505. the condemnation of martyrdom,

  506. dying for standing up for your faith?

  507. Is there a,

  508. Nebuchadnezzar saying,

  509. is there a God out there

  510. that could deliver you from that,

  511. from the furnace,

  512. from the furnace of,

  513. the fire of suffering

  514. that comes into each one of our lives?

  515. And what do they say?

  516. In verse 17 and 18,

  517. they say,

  518. we don't need to answer this question.

  519. And then they do.

  520. If this be so,

  521. if we have to die,

  522. our God whom we serve

  523. is able to deliver us.

  524. He's able.

  525. Okay,

  526. first they say,

  527. God is able to deliver me.

  528. God is able to deliver us

  529. from any type of suffering

  530. in this life,

  531. any type of furnace,

  532. any type of circumstance.

  533. But then the key,

  534. verse 18,

  535. but if not,

  536. and do you see what they're saying?

  537. They say,

  538. look,

  539. we know God can save us

  540. from the fiery furnace,

  541. but he may decide not to.

  542. And we may just have to die.

  543. And that means that

  544. what they're teaching us is,

  545. they're saying,

  546. Nebuchadnezzar,

  547. we trust God for who he is,

  548. not what he gives to us.

  549. We trust God and want God

  550. for who he is,

  551. not the benefits.

  552. We're not calling upon God

  553. and saying,

  554. well,

  555. if you were to deliver us

  556. out of suffering

  557. in a really hard circumstance

  558. out of the fire,

  559. then we might trust you.

  560. It's saying,

  561. we trust God

  562. because he is God

  563. even if he chooses

  564. not to save us

  565. from this moment,

  566. from this circumstance.

  567. And that gives us

  568. our fourth principle

  569. of living in exile.

  570. And it's this,

  571. to live faithfully

  572. in the midst of idolatry

  573. in a city like ours,

  574. God has to be

  575. the apple of your eye.

  576. God has to be the point.

  577. God has to,

  578. you have to be growing

  579. into a person

  580. where it's not Christianity

  581. you follow,

  582. but God is the desire

  583. of your heart.

  584. It's not a religion

  585. that you're after,

  586. it's Jesus himself

  587. that you want.

  588. Where God is who you want,

  589. where you can say,

  590. even if I have to walk

  591. through every fire

  592. and never be rescued,

  593. God is enough for me.

  594. God is who I was made for.

  595. God is who I actually want.

  596. And the point of this

  597. is to ask the question today,

  598. for all of us,

  599. there will come a moment

  600. where suffering

  601. will not cease.

  602. In every one of our lives,

  603. we will enter into the furnace

  604. and we will not come out of it

  605. in this life

  606. at some point.

  607. And the question is,

  608. is the Lord enough?

  609. Is it God that you want

  610. or is it just the religion?

  611. Is he the apple of your eye

  612. in the days of your youth

  613. and in the days of old age

  614. when you're going to walk

  615. through the fire

  616. and not come out of it

  617. unscathed but burned?

  618. Of course,

  619. there we're talking about death

  620. and every other fire

  621. that you might walk through

  622. in this life.

  623. What does Nebuchadnezzar say?

  624. He says,

  625. do you have a God

  626. who is enough

  627. to take you through the furnace?

  628. What God could there be

  629. that could deliver you

  630. from my hands,

  631. from the furnace?

  632. Is there a God like that?

  633. I love the line,

  634. and I've heard many say it,

  635. sometimes when you enter

  636. into the furnace,

  637. that's the moment

  638. where you realize

  639. you don't know Jesus

  640. is all you have

  641. until Jesus is all you need.

  642. You don't know Jesus

  643. is all you need

  644. until Jesus is all you have.

  645. Sometimes when you enter

  646. into the furnace,

  647. there is nothing left

  648. but to say,

  649. is God enough for me?

  650. And he is.

  651. He is what you need.

  652. See, the question,

  653. let's go to the third,

  654. the close.

  655. Nebuchadnezzar says,

  656. is there a God

  657. that could deliver you

  658. from the furnace?

  659. And we see here

  660. the fourth man.

  661. So in verse 19,

  662. Nebuchadnezzar,

  663. he raises the temperature

  664. of the kiln,

  665. the fires,

  666. so hot,

  667. seven times hotter

  668. that even the soldiers

  669. that take these guys there

  670. die just trying

  671. to get close to it.

  672. And then,

  673. out of the mouth of babes,

  674. after asking,

  675. is there a God

  676. who could deliver you?

  677. Nebuchadnezzar lifts up his eyes,

  678. he looks into the furnace,

  679. and he says,

  680. did we not cast three men

  681. into the fire?

  682. But I see a fourth

  683. who has the appearance

  684. like a son of the gods,

  685. verse 24 and 25.

  686. And then he says

  687. in verse 28,

  688. God delivered you,

  689. Shadrach, Meshach,

  690. and Abednego.

  691. God sent his angel

  692. to deliver you,

  693. to deliver his servants.

  694. Now,

  695. who is this,

  696. this fourth?

  697. One like the son of the gods,

  698. one in an appearance

  699. like a son of the gods.

  700. And then Nebuchadnezzar himself

  701. says he is an angel.

  702. In Genesis 18,

  703. three men showed up

  704. to Abraham's door,

  705. and it said,

  706. one of the three

  707. was the angel of the Lord,

  708. and Abraham bowed down

  709. and worshiped him.

  710. In Exodus chapter 3,

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  711. there was a bush burning,

  712. consumed a thicket

  713. and flames

  714. on top of Mount Sinai.

  715. And in Exodus 3,

  716. it said,

  717. out of the bush

  718. that was burning,

  719. yet not consumed,

  720. walked the angel

  721. of the Lord.

  722. He,

  723. in the midst of the flames,

  724. yet not consumed.

  725. And you come to Daniel chapter 3,

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  726. and you realize

  727. that this is

  728. the angel of the Lord,

  729. one who entered

  730. into the fire

  731. but was never consumed,

  732. just like Exodus 3.

  733. And that means

  734. with the church

  735. for 2,000 years,

  736. we say today

  737. that this is

  738. a pre-incarnate

  739. manifestation

  740. and condescension

  741. of the Son of God Himself.

  742. This is the one

  743. who would take on flesh

  744. as Jesus Christ

  745. in the Gospels,

  746. walking through the fire

  747. with Shadrach,

  748. Meshach,

  749. and Abednego.

  750. And Nebuchadnezzar asked,

  751. is there one

  752. like the Son of,

  753. is there a God,

  754. I should say,

  755. who will deliver you

  756. out of the furnace?

  757. And here we see

  758. that the Son of God

  759. who walked through the fire,

  760. yet was not consumed

  761. in the Old Testament,

  762. is the very Son of God

  763. who chose to enter the fire

  764. and be consumed

  765. for us at the cross.

  766. Why?

  767. So that we could be rescued

  768. from our little golden statues

  769. at the bottom of our hearts.

  770. The very one

  771. who delivered Shadrach,

  772. Meshach,

  773. and Abednego

  774. in this moment

  775. is the one

  776. who was so consumed

  777. by the fires of hell

  778. for you at the cross

  779. so that He could rescue you

  780. from the golden statue

  781. that you worship of self.

  782. And you see

  783. how much Jesus Christ

  784. solves the great dilemmas

  785. we face in this story.

  786. When He went to the cross,

  787. He was burned.

  788. He went to hell itself

  789. for us

  790. so that the judgment

  791. our self-glorification

  792. deserves

  793. would die with Him.

  794. He can rescue you

  795. from all your pride

  796. and forgive you for that.

  797. But then,

  798. you know,

  799. think about it.

  800. Through this furnace,

  801. the very thing

  802. Nebuchadnezzar needed

  803. so much in his life

  804. that Shadrach,

  805. Meshach,

  806. and Abednego had,

  807. he never had.

  808. And that's this,

  809. a relationship with God

  810. that can secure you

  811. in this life.

  812. You know,

  813. when Jesus goes

  814. to be burned

  815. in the fires of the cross,

  816. He makes a way

  817. so that you can know God,

  818. have a relationship with God,

  819. make God the point

  820. of your life

  821. so that when you enter

  822. the fire of suffering,

  823. you'll not be burned

  824. ultimately.

  825. Isaiah 43

  826. is all about this.

  827. What does it say?

  828. With Him,

  829. you can walk through

  830. every fire

  831. and not be burned.

  832. How?

  833. Because you know

  834. that you've got

  835. the one you were made for.

  836. You've got Him,

  837. God.

  838. And if the next event

  839. of suffering

  840. takes everything from you,

  841. and it's going to one day,

  842. one day the suffering

  843. will come

  844. that will take everything

  845. that we know

  846. in this life,

  847. you've got the God

  848. for whom you were made.

  849. And when that day comes,

  850. because Jesus is all you have,

  851. you will realize

  852. Jesus is all I need.

  853. That's what the cross

  854. does for us.

  855. And the third thing

  856. it does for us

  857. is it changes the meaning

  858. of suffering

  859. in your life now.

  860. Suffering in this life

  861. can be,

  862. the New Testament says,

  863. a refiner's fire.

  864. You know,

  865. it can melt the vices

  866. in our lives

  867. and bring out faith,

  868. hope, and love.

  869. Actually,

  870. the surprising word

  871. of the New Testament,

  872. suffering can bring you joy.

  873. Whoa.

  874. And how?

  875. Because when you have Jesus,

  876. when you are walking

  877. through the fire

  878. with the one

  879. who appears here,

  880. like the,

  881. oh,

  882. Nebuchadnezzar said,

  883. like the son of the gods,

  884. he is the son of God.

  885. When you walk

  886. through the fire with him,

  887. he actually gives you

  888. the ability

  889. to take on joy

  890. in suffering,

  891. to be refined

  892. instead of just a crumble.

  893. Modern Western people

  894. do not,

  895. we do not collectively,

  896. sociologically

  897. suffer very well.

  898. We live lives

  899. of comfort

  900. and abundance

  901. and we don't expect

  902. to suffer

  903. and so it's so tough

  904. for us when we do suffer.

  905. But of course,

  906. we know it's coming.

  907. And this passage

  908. tells you about

  909. the only way

  910. to get through it

  911. and that's

  912. to make

  913. the Lord

  914. himself

  915. the apple

  916. of your eye.

  917. He's got to be

  918. the one you desire.

  919. You got to ask God,

  920. help me desire you,

  921. want you

  922. more than anything else

  923. and I'll close

  924. with this word.

  925. Remember I said

  926. at the beginning

  927. that the bookends

  928. of this story

  929. are all about Nebuchadnezzar.

  930. It's been that way

  931. all throughout

  932. and you come back

  933. at the end

  934. of this chapter

  935. to Nebuchadnezzar

  936. and at the very end

  937. of the story

  938. it says,

  939. Nebuchadnezzar said,

  940. your God

  941. really is a God,

  942. really is God

  943. and blessed

  944. be the name

  945. of your God

  946. and you start

  947. to think,

  948. is Nebuchadnezzar

  949. beginning to get it?

  950. God has been

  951. speaking to him

  952. over and over again.

  953. We'll see that

  954. especially next week.

  955. But then in the next verse

  956. Nebuchadnezzar says,

  957. now if anybody

  958. fails to worship

  959. the God of Shadrach,

  960. Meshach,

  961. and Abednego,

  962. they are to be torn

  963. limb to limb.

  964. Okay,

  965. so you realize

  966. he didn't get it again

  967. and of course again

  968. he made it all

  969. about himself

  970. again

  971. and he just inserted

  972. the God of Shadrach,

  973. Meshach,

  974. and Abednego

  975. into his golden statue

  976. picture

  977. and said,

  978. okay,

  979. well now that's

  980. the God we'll worship

  981. but it's ultimately

  982. about my power

  983. and glory

  984. so I'll rip your limbs

  985. off if you don't do it.

  986. He didn't repent

  987. and what's on offer today

  988. for some of us

  989. in this room

  990. for the first time

  991. but for all of us

  992. again

  993. is to recognize

  994. and ask the question,

  995. can you say

  996. I am a self-divinizing

  997. worshiper of the golden image

  998. of my own self-glory

  999. in the bottom of my soul?

  1000. Can you say that?

  1001. Can you say

  1002. that is me?

1003. That is who I am.

1004. I exist to worship me

  1005. and I know it

1006. and I struggle with it

  1007. and I don't want it anymore

1008. and I want to be rescued

  1009. from it

  1010. and I love what

  1011. Martin Lloyd-Jones says.

  1012. He says,

1013. the trouble with many of us

  1014. is that

  1015. we've not really repented.

  1016. We've been convicted

  1017. of sins

  1018. but not of sin.

  1019. We've been convicted

1020. of lots of little things

  1021. we've done

  1022. and we've said

  1023. I've made mistakes.

1024. That was a bad point

  1025. of my life.

1026. I struggled with that then

1027. or I struggle with this today

  1028. but he says this,

  1029. we're sorry

1030. for the things we've done

1031. but we have to be sorry

  1032. for what we are.

  1033. For who we are.

  1034. Self-divinizing,

  1035. self-worshiping people

  1036. that stand against

  1037. the living God

  1038. and the last word

  1039. is this.

  1040. The irony of

  1041. this story

  1042. is that

  1043. Nebuchadnezzar

  1044. almost definitely

  1045. sends Shadrach,

  1046. Meshach,

  1047. Abednego

  1048. into the fiery furnace,

  1049. the very furnace

  1050. that he used

1051. to forge the golden image.

  1052. This is the furnace

1053. that he made the idol out of

1054. that he sends them into

  1055. and instead

  1056. of vindicating

  1057. his idol

  1058. in this moment,

  1059. the furnace

  1060. exposes

  1061. his powerlessness.

  1062. The very place

  1063. that he chose

  1064. to build an image

  1065. of himself

  1066. to worship

  1067. is the place

  1068. where God

  1069. upstaged him

  1070. and demonstrates

  1071. that God

  1072. is the true God

  1073. not Nebuchadnezzar

  1074. and that means

  1075. that this furnace

  1076. is not only

  1077. an image of suffering,

  1078. it's an image

  1079. of Nebuchadnezzar's heart.

  1080. The fire burning

  1081. at your heart

  1082. Nebuchadnezzar

  1083. is an idol

  1084. but God

  1085. is coming

  1086. into his heart

  1087. you see

  1088. and saying

  1089. you're exposed,

  1090. repent,

  1091. bow down,

  1092. cast the image down,

  1093. worship the real God.

1094. Let me ask you today,

  1095. will you do that?

  1096. Can you say that?

  1097. I'm self-divinizing

  1098. but I don't want

  1099. that anymore.

1100. I want to be rescued.

  1101. And cast down

  1102. all the images

  1103. and bow your knee

  1104. to the real God.

  1105. He'll give you everything.

  1106. Let us pray.

  1107. Lord, we thank you

  1108. for this story,

  1109. famous story,

  1110. how powerful it is

  1111. and we pray now

  1112. that you would expose

  1113. our idols of self

  1114. and give us

  1115. a far better hope

  1116. and that's

  1117. to know you,

  1118. to be with you,

  1119. to walk through fire

  1120. with you,

  1121. to have you

1122. as the apple of our eye,

1123. the true joy of our hearts.

1124. So do that work in us now

  1125. as we sing

  1126. in Christ's name.

  1127. Amen.
