  1. So, as I said, we're going to spend probably up until September exploring episodes from the life of Elijah together, and his is a remarkable life.

  2. He'll witness great encounters with God, great expressions of God's power, and he will hear God speak in a whisper.

  3. And he, of course, returns to heaven in a fiery chariot.

  4. He's a big figure in the Old Testament.

  5. He's a big figure in the New Testament.

  6. As the storyline of the Old Testament continues, there is this anticipation that before the Lord comes in power, there will be another prophet like Elijah who will prepare the way.

  7. And then we come into the New Testament, and we even hear it from Jesus himself.

  8. That ministry, that second Elijah, that's John the Baptist.

  9. And then we turn to a book like the book of James, and we're presented with Elijah as an example from this story of a prayer of faith, a man who prays, believing, and God hears, and God answers.

  10. There's a remarkable life written large across the pages of the Bible.

  11. And he arrives on the scene at a low point, one of the many low points in Israel's spiritual life.

  12. And they have turned from faith to idolatry.

  13. No longer trusting wholeheartedly in the God of the covenant, now they have turned to the gods of Canaan.

  14. And they've been led into that in large measure by King Ahab and his wife, Queen Jezebel.

  15. And so part of the feature of Elijah's life, Elijah the prophet, is as a servant of the Lord, he's going to suffer.

  16. And we'll see this as the weeks go by.

  17. Ahab gives him a nickname, the Troubler of Israel.

  18. He has a very low reputation of low impression of Elijah.

  19. Now Jezebel will put a price on his head.

  20. And Elijah the prophet, who looks to stay faithful to his God, will have to live with the pain of seeing the people of Israel's divided hearts.

  21. Can't quite decide who they should worship.

  22. Of course, when we come to a story like Elijah's, we're separated from him by long ages of history and culture.

  23. And so he can come across as a very different figure.

  24. The time and place can seem very different to ours, which of course it is.

  25. But we'll see similarities and parallels as well.

  26. We discover timeless truths in the story of Elijah.

  27. That at different points, as God's church, I think will challenge us.

  28. At other points, will encourage us.

  29. So we're going to see over and over again, there is an unchanging God.

  30. A God of absolute holiness.

  31. A God who tolerates no rivals for worship.

  32. And yet, even when his people have walked so far away, here is another example of God extending compassion and grace.

  33. Sending Elijah, seeking to draw rebels back to true worship and into relationship.

  34. We'll see, I think, a number of times the unchanging temptation that runs not just from Elijah's day to ours, but from the beginnings of the fall into sin.

  35. The temptation to look to find our security and life in someone or something other than the true God.

  36. For them, it was Baal.

  37. For us, as Calvin says, we have hearts that are idol factories.

  38. And we're always being tempted to place our hope for security and life in something other than the true God.

  39. And I think a story like Elijah reminds us that as a church, as the people of God, we have an unchanging call.

  40. What is it that God wants of his people?

  41. Well, he wants us to stand firm in faith.

  42. He wants us to represent him in the way that we live lives of faith and obedience.

  43. And we will see Elijah on different occasions standing up for God, being willing to be a man apart.

  44. And we will hear him speak up for God.

  45. A man expressing his loyalty and his faith, even as everyone else's hearts seem to be wavering.

  46. That just like Elijah, we are invited as the people of God, as those who have known grace,

  47. to call people out of a drought and famine, spiritually speaking, to the feast that Jesus himself offers.

  48. But today in our little story here, I think the lesson that we can draw,

  49. in the one hand, is negative that we will never find life-giving joy and satisfaction from anything else that we place our hopes in.

  50. But positively, as we see it in the story of Elijah, we will find life and satisfaction as we turn to trust in the Lord our God.

  51. I think that's the underlying message behind the confrontation with Ahab.

  52. It's certainly the message that we get from Elijah's life in contrast to what everyone else is experiencing.

  53. God is looking after him.

  54. He's being provided for.

  55. He's enjoying blessing while everyone else is experiencing drought and famine.

  56. And ultimately, it's the message of the Lord Jesus.

  57. It's what he gives to us in the gospel.

  58. It's what he gave to the women of Samaria.

  59. It's what he gave to the crowds in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  60. So, our sermon this evening, very simple.

  61. One statement divided into two sections.

  62. The first, from verse 1, the God who is alive.

  63. Elijah said to Ahab, as the Lord, the God of Israel lives, whom I serve,

  64. there will be neither June or rain in the next few years except at my word.

  65. So, this is the first time we come across Elijah.

  66. He bursts into the national scene without any kind of formalities.

  67. He's just here.

  68. He's in the court of the king.

  69. And he speaks.

  70. And as we think about even just this verse, the story is inviting us to do some compare

  71. and contrast between some different figures that we will encounter.

  72. And I want us, as we're thinking about this for ourselves, also to think about the first

  73. hearers of this story, the people of Israel, as they find themselves deciding which path

  74. will I follow when it comes to my worship.

  75. Am I going to choose Canaan's gods or am I going to choose the covenant god?

  76. And how would this opening story challenge, correct, teach them, and what does it do for us?

  77. Think about the time in which we live.

  78. We're bombarded in so many different ways by messages that would say, have this, have

  79. me, and you will have life.

  80. So, advertising is built on it.

  81. Social media influence is driven by it.

  82. The battle that goes on in our sinful hearts as well.

  83. We're always recognizing, because we're made as worshiping beings, I need something.

  84. That will give me security, that will give me meaning, that will give me hope, that will

  85. give me life.

  86. And again, that temptation within our hearts is to go in another direction and to wander

  87. from the living God.

  88. And so, we have in these verses a compare and contrast to help us to reflect.

  89. The first contrast is between Elijah and Ahab, of course.

  90. King Ahab has just been introduced in 1 Kings 16.

  91. If you want to turn a page back in your Bible, we discover the whole of chapter 16 actually

  92. is a picture of here are some years of instability within the nation of Israel because they've

  93. got a whole chain of kings who are not following God in loyalty.

  94. And so, their reigns don't last long and there's civil unrest and there's fighting over the throne.

  95. There's a whole chain of wicked kings, but when we come to Ahab, he's the lowest of the low.

  96. Chapter 16, verse 30, Ahab, son of Omri, did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than those

  97. before him.

  98. Verse 33, Ahab did more to arouse the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than did all

  99. the kings before him.

  100. He marries a pagan woman who leads him into idolatry.

  101. He sets up all these Asherah poles and these Baals and he turns the nation towards false

  102. worship.

  103. He's a powerful figure.

  104. Clearly, he's the king.

  105. He sits in the palace.

  106. He sits on David's throne.

  107. But unlike David, he is a false worship leader.

  108. Israel's king was to lead the people to worship God.

  109. He's a false worship leader.

  110. So, there's Ahab on the one hand and then there's Elijah.

  111. Elijah the Tishbite from Tishbe and Gilead.

  112. Bible commentators and scholars can't even decide where this place is, but it's clearly

  113. a middle of nowhere kind of a place.

  114. He has no background.

  115. He has no credentials.

  116. He has no family lineage of being a prophet or anything like that.

  117. But what we are invited to see about Ahab is that he is a willing, obedient servant of

  118. the Lord.

  119. He is someone who is concerned for the true glory of God.

  120. And in the end of the day, that's what matters.

  121. Remember what Paul wrote to the folks in Corinth.

  122. God doesn't typically choose those who are wise and those who are strong and those who are

  123. powerful.

  124. Rather, he chooses the weak to confine the strong, to demonstrate his grace so that he

  125. gets the glory.

  126. In a sense, we see Elijah like Jesus, the servant of the Lord.

  127. He had no beauty or comeliness that people would desire him.

  128. But he came willing, obedient, concerned for the glory of God.

  129. Second contrast within our text is between the two gods.

  130. It's not so much a contrast as a God context.

  131. Between the Lord God and Baal.

  132. And this is where we need just a little bit of background into Canaanite worship.

  133. Because Baal, he was one of their major gods.

  134. He was the god of storm and weather and fertility.

  135. And so the message in Canaan was, you need to worship Baal.

  136. And if Baal doesn't get worship, then he won't send rain.

  137. And if he doesn't send rain, then we don't have crops.

  138. Without crops, there's no food.

  139. Without food, there's no life.

  140. And so for the people of Israel living in Canaan, gradually they came to believe that, well, if

  141. that's the message, then we better at least hedge our bets because we don't want to miss

  142. out on the rain and the crops and the food and the life.

  143. Fear, the desire for security, the desire for wealth, drove Ahab and drove Israel to join

  144. their culture in false worship.

  145. And it's probably true for our own hearts that there are those same pools on us.

  146. We have that desire for security and wealth, and sometimes there is fear also.

  147. And it can be easy for us to think, well, if I just had money or if I just had success or

  148. status or the right job, then I would have that security.

  149. And our hearts can be drawn from God.

  150. Well, into that setting, that setting where Baal is being presented as the God of weather

  151. and storm and crops and life, the Lord God throws down the gauntlet, doesn't he, in verse

  152. one?

  153. There will be neither dew nor rain except at my word.

  154. Who gives the dew, who gives the rain, who controls the weather, who's responsible for bringing life or

  155. withholding the rains?

  156. It's not Baal, but God.

  157. That's the message Elijah delivers.

  158. And we need to hear this as well, I think, in the context of God's covenant that he's made with his

  159. people.

  160. He's the Lord God.

  161. That's his covenant name.

  162. And God must always be faithful to his covenant word.

  163. And in the book of Deuteronomy, in the book of Leviticus, we discover that within the covenant,

  164. there are these terms.

  165. You know, Israel is to live with the true God as their God.

  166. And if they will do that, then they can experience and look for and expect blessing.

  167. But if they turn away from God in disobedience, they can expect to experience curse.

  168. It's spelled out really clearly in, for example, Leviticus chapter 26.

    Leviticus 26 chapter mention

  169. Again, if you're using a church Bible, it's there on page 130.

  170. Now, but let me just read a couple of verses.

  171. Chapter 26 begins this way.

  172. Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves.

  173. And do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it.

  174. I am the Lord your God.

  175. Really clear command.

  176. Don't make any other idols.

  177. Don't direct your worship anywhere other than to the true God.

  178. Then in verse 3, if you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands,

  179. I will send you rain in its season and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit.

  180. The God who truly does control the weather, who controls the rains that give the crops,

  181. that give the life, promises blessing upon obedience.

  182. But then, verse 18, and this is part of the punishments for disobedience.

  183. If after all of this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over.

  184. I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.

  185. Your strength will be spent in vain because your soil will not yield its crops,

  186. nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.

  187. It's really, really clear that they have been acting in disobedience.

  188. And this message, no June or rain, is the covenant God bringing judgment because of disobedience.

  189. One more compare and contrast that's in the background in this section is Elijah and his fellow Israelites.

  190. So, one of the striking features, I think, of Elijah's story is how often we see him standing by himself.

  191. He stands alone, the man of God committed to God's word and faithfulness to the Lord God

  192. against a backdrop of wickedness and false worship and a message from the palace that says,

  193. stop talking or we'll kill you.

  194. Where Israel fails, Elijah doesn't.

  195. Israel did not stay devoted to God.

  196. Israel clearly does not trust that the God of the Bible will provide for their needs.

  197. They don't believe that life with him is the key to true life,

  198. and so they turn to place their hopes elsewhere.

  199. But Elijah doesn't do that.

  200. And as Elijah stands, the man of faith and obedience in this setting,

  201. he prepares us in a greater way for Jesus' ministry.

  202. And this is where we understand that is good news.

  203. Because where we fail,

  204. because all too often as we think about our stories,

  205. our hearts are divided in terms of where our worship and our loyalty goes.

  206. We are guilty of disloyalty and disobedience.

  207. We don't always keep God's law.

  208. We don't always practice love for him and for our neighbor.

  209. But where we fail and where we deserve curse,

  210. Jesus perfectly succeeds.

  211. And then on the cross, he takes our curse,

  212. as he takes our sin,

  213. so that he might give us his blessing.

  214. And the wonderful message of the gospel is that

  215. Jesus calls us back to himself,

  216. calling us back to the source of true life,

  217. to the God who is alive.

  218. So before we move on to the next point,

  219. just two things to underline.

  220. Very basic.

  221. One, the God of the Bible is the only true and living God.

  222. I don't know how many people here are interested in golf.

  223. Maybe not that many, but that's not too important.

  224. But the number one golfer right now is Scotty Scheffler.

  225. And he got people talking this week,

  226. preparing for the British Open,

  227. he was getting interviewed at a press conference.

  228. And he basically talked about the golfer's life as,

  229. his life,

  230. as being not a fulfilling life.

  231. He said, we're encouraged to give everything

  232. to win these tournaments.

  233. We give everything for two minutes of joy.

  234. He came out and said,

  235. what's the point of being the best player in the world?

  236. Well, it's really interesting,

  237. because I think he understands there,

  238. and we can learn from his story,

  239. the truth about counterfeit gods.

  240. There is that message,

  241. here are these things to aspire to.

  242. They promise much,

  243. but they fail to deliver.

  244. What the world offers can't bear the weight of our expectations,

  245. and is no help to us eternally.

  246. Only the true and the living God won't disappoint,

  247. won't fail us.

  248. Only Jesus, the Son of God,

  249. who died for our sin,

  250. who rose for our salvation,

  251. He is the only one who never fails.

  252. He establishes the new covenant

  253. in His broken body,

  254. in His shed blood,

  255. and you and I,

  256. we can trust His word of promise

  257. from here to eternity.

  258. Our God will go before us.

  259. He has gone before us.

  260. The God of the Bible is the only true living God.

  261. And secondly, I think from Elijah,

  262. we have that reminder

  263. that God's people are called to stand up

  264. and speak up.

  265. And it requires courage,

  266. and it requires conviction.

  267. In a sense,

  268. the church is a bit like Elijah.

  269. Our pedigree is not that high.

  270. Our CV is not that impressive.

  271. Our place in society as a church

  272. is not much.

  273. But Jesus, from heaven,

  274. He sends the Spirit.

  275. And the God of the Bible,

  276. who plans all things,

  277. plans that His church

  278. be His representative witnesses

  279. in this world.

  280. And He gives us strength

  281. to live by faith.

  282. He gives us courage

  283. to speak of His goodness

  284. and His love.

  285. Enabling us to speak

  286. to the people around us.

  287. The people who are anxious.

  288. People who have been disappointed.

  289. People who are searching.

  290. To lovingly point people away

  291. from what the world offers.

  292. To say Jesus is better.

  293. To live together in a way

  294. that shows Jesus is better.

  295. To recognize He is the answer

  296. to our spiritual drought.

  297. When we feel our sense of guilt

  298. or when we wander away

  299. and our hearts grow cold,

  300. when we find ourselves

  301. searching for that something more,

  302. the message of the Bible

  303. has come to Jesus.

  304. So if the first part of our statement

  305. is the God who is alive,

  306. the second part that concludes it,

  307. the God who is alive

  308. is the God who gives life.

  309. That's verses two to six.

  310. So another feature

  311. of the Elijah story,

  312. which is wonderful,

  313. is that God doesn't just

  314. talk a good game.

  315. He doesn't just talk about His power.

  316. He acts.

  317. You know, He makes clear,

  318. I am the true and the living God.

  319. And He shows it in remarkable ways.

  320. And here's the first of these.

  321. If part one was compare and contrast,

  322. let's think about part two

  323. as command and response.

  324. First of all,

  325. the command to Elijah

  326. and the response of Elijah.

  327. God's command is there

  328. in verses two to four.

  329. The word of the Lord came to Elijah,

  330. leave here, turn east,

  331. hide in the Kerith ravine.

  332. You will drink from the brook

  333. and I've instructed the ravens

  334. to supply you.

  335. There's a wonderful message

  336. for Elijah.

  337. The servant of the Lord

  338. is going to be spared

  339. from the drought.

  340. While others are experiencing judgment,

  341. he is going to receive salvation.

  342. He's going to receive these tokens of blessing.

  343. He will be miraculously provided for

  344. both in the food that he will eat

  345. and the drink that he will have.

  346. And if we think back to our Bibles,

  347. this takes us back, doesn't it,

  348. to the story of the Exodus.

  349. There are Moses and Israel

  350. and they are in the wilderness.

  351. They're in a desert situation.

  352. situation.

  353. And God miraculously feeds them.

  354. The manna and the quail

  355. rain down from heaven

  356. every day except the Sabbath.

  357. And then in chapter 17,

  358. as they're thirsty,

  359. God miraculously provides

  360. for a grumbling people,

  361. by his grace,

  362. water from the rock.

  363. And then wonderfully,

  364. as Paul thinks about that

  365. little image,

  366. he says,

  367. the rock,

  368. the rock was Christ.

  369. So the God who saves

  370. is the God who sustains.

  371. And here he sustains

  372. his profit.

  373. Picks up a theme

  374. that runs through the whole Bible.

  375. Look to God

  376. and his word.

  377. Look to God

  378. and his promise

  379. in order to find life.

  380. Wasn't that the case

  381. for Adam and Eve

  382. in the Garden of Eden?

  383. If they would have trusted

  384. God's word,

  385. if they would have lived

  386. in obedience,

  387. they would have lived

  388. in paradise

  389. with God forever.

  390. It was the message

  391. for Israel.

  392. As they were heading

  393. from slavery

  394. towards their promised land,

  395. trust in God,

  396. live in faith

  397. and obedience,

  398. and you will live

  399. in the promised land

  400. and you will experience

  401. blessing

  402. and God will care

  403. for you

  404. and provide for you.

  405. And for us as a church,

  406. we are called

  407. to trust our God

  408. and his word.

  409. And we're invited then

  410. to enjoy life

  411. with God

  412. through Jesus today.

  413. As Jesus reminded us

  414. this morning,

  415. we call God

  416. our Father in heaven.

  417. And we look forward

  418. to life in a perfect kingdom

  419. for all eternity.

  420. Well,

  421. as Elijah received

  422. the command

  423. to leave and go,

  424. his response,

  425. verse 5,

  426. so he did

  427. what the Lord

  428. had told him.

  429. He went

  430. to the Kerith ravine

  431. and he stayed there.

  432. It's simple

  433. but really beautiful.

  434. When the rest

  435. of the nation

  436. is so half-hearted

  437. and can't decide

  438. who they should trust,

  439. who they should obey,

  440. here is the man of God

  441. choosing to live by faith.

  442. And because he does,

  443. he enjoys

  444. God's wonderful blessing.

  445. But there's a second

  446. and there's a more striking

  447. command and response

  448. scene in the Bible

  449. reminding us

  450. that the God

  451. who is alive

  452. is the God

  453. who gives life,

  454. he controls everything.

  455. It's the Ravens.

  456. Now,

  457. to help us think

  458. about the Ravens,

  459. I didn't do this

  460. on purpose

  461. but last week

  462. we went down

  463. to Portobello Beach

  464. and I don't know

  465. if anyone's been

  466. down to Portobello

  467. recently

  468. since they opened up

  469. a really nice pizza place

  470. to go with the Chippies.

  471. Well,

  472. we were there

  473. at dinner time

  474. and if you've seen

  475. Alfred Hitchcock's

  476. The Birds,

  477. that was the kind

  478. of vision

  479. as there was like,

  480. there must have been

  481. like 50 of these seagulls

  482. circling the bins

  483. and circling

  484. the folks eating

  485. their dinner.

  486. It was horrendous.

  487. They were not

  488. being charged

  489. with delivering

  490. the food,

  491. rather their

  492. sole purpose

  493. for those minutes

  494. that we were there

  495. finding a safe

  496. distance away

  497. sitting on the grass

  498. away from the beach

  499. was to steal

  500. any food

  501. that they could get.

  502. And if you ever see

  503. not just a seagull

  504. but any kind of bird,

  505. even a tiny bird,

  506. if you see a little bird

  507. with a tiny scrap

  508. of food,

  509. you've probably seen

  510. those other birds

  511. try and get their share.

  512. They're not natural

  513. sharers,

  514. are they?

  515. Even with a little

  516. scrap,

  517. they want it

  518. for themselves.

  519. And so the command

  520. and the response

  521. to and of the ravens

  522. is remarkable.

  523. The ravens,

  524. in verse 6,

  525. brought Elijah

  526. bread and meat

  527. in the morning

  528. and bread and meat

  529. in the evening

  530. and he drank

  531. from the brook.

  532. The God of the Bible,

  533. not Baal,

  534. is the creator

  535. and king

  536. over the whole creation,

  537. over the life

  538. of Elijah,

  539. over the life

  540. of the birds.

  541. They do what he commands

  542. to provide life-giving food

  543. to his servant.

  544. Now think about this

  545. as the first hearers

  546. of this story.

  547. Imagine them,

  548. you know,

  549. they place their hopes

  550. in Baal

  551. and now they're living

  552. in a drought condition.

  553. They've got this choice,

  554. don't they?

  555. Well, right now,

  556. we're trusting Baal

  557. and there's no rain

  558. and we're hungry.

  559. He promised life

  560. but we're not getting any.

  561. And then they hear

  562. about Elijah.

  563. Elijah trusts God

  564. and he's enjoying life.

  565. God's caring for him

  566. just as God said he would.

  567. And you wonder,

  568. would they make the connection?

  569. Would they begin

  570. that journey back

  571. to God?

  572. Can we make the connection

  573. to see that

  574. the God who is alive

  575. is the God

  576. who gives

  577. true life?

  578. As we leave

  579. scene one,

  580. and we'll come back

  581. to Elijah next week,

  582. as we see

  583. the true and the living God

  584. who provides true life,

  585. it's a wonderful story.

  586. A couple of suggestions

  587. for our storytelling.

  588. One,

  589. tell our stories,

  590. tell your story

  591. of God's clear,

  592. detailed kindness

  593. and protection.

  594. We don't have stories

  595. as dramatic as Elijah's,

  596. I don't think.

  597. But we have stories

  598. stories,

  599. where we've come

  600. to see

  601. the good care

  602. of our Father

  603. over our lives.

  604. We have stories

  605. where we have been

  606. in trouble

  607. or been in want

  608. and we have prayed

  609. and God has answered,

  610. sometimes dramatically,

  611. sometimes through

  612. other people.

  613. We have those stories.

  614. We have faith

  615. in a God

  616. who controls

  617. everything.

  618. There is no moment

  619. outside of His control.

  620. And I think

  621. one of the things

  622. that's so important

  623. for us

  624. as the people

  625. of God

  626. is that we live

  627. recognizing

  628. this is my Father's world.

  629. I like to read

  630. old books

  631. and the old

  632. feel,

  633. they got this,

  634. they lived

  635. and breathed

  636. knowing

  637. every little

  638. moment

  639. directed,

  640. controlled by God

  641. and it gave them

  642. such a peace

  643. and security

  644. and stability.

  645. So I think

  646. the story of Elijah

  647. is an invitation

  648. to you and to me

  649. to think about

  650. and to talk about

  651. the ways

  652. that we see

  653. and we feel

  654. God's ordinary

  655. and extraordinary

  656. care

  657. over our lives

  658. to acknowledge

  659. as God promises

  660. He gives us

  661. daily bread,

  662. He gives us

  663. grace for today

  664. and He will

  665. give us grace

  666. for our tomorrow

  667. whatever that looks like.

  668. And the reason

  669. why that's so important

  670. is because there's

  671. lots of people

  672. around us

  673. where the question

  674. that they're asking

  675. if they're asking

  676. any questions

  677. about Christianity

  678. is not so much

  679. maybe nowadays

  680. is your faith

  681. true

  682. but so much

  683. does your faith

  684. work.

  685. That seems to be

  686. significant

  687. to people

  688. to us now.

  689. And so

  690. as we tell

  691. our stories

  692. of answered prayer

  693. of God's

  694. goodness

  695. to us

  696. we get

  697. to show

  698. people

  699. that God

  700. is real

  701. that faith

  702. is real

  703. that there is

  704. a reason

  705. to consider

  706. true

  707. and I think

  708. it's important

  709. for us

  710. to encourage

  711. one another

  712. as well.

  713. You know

  714. here is Elijah

  715. and he is being

  716. spiritually fed

  717. in a wilderness

  718. kind of experience.

  719. I wonder

  720. if you can

  721. testify

  722. to times

  723. when life

  724. seemed really

  725. hard

  726. in a time

  727. of suffering

  728. or trial

  729. and God's

  730. word came

  731. with particular

  732. power

  733. where God

  734. seemed to be

  735. particularly

  736. close

  737. and showing

  738. his love

  739. even when

  740. everything else

  741. seemed to be

  742. falling apart.

  743. That's a

  744. wonderful

  745. testimony of

  746. God's grace

  747. for our own

  748. faith and for

  749. the faith

  750. of one another.

  751. our stories

  752. will likely

  753. not include

  754. ravens

  755. but there

  756. will be

  757. moments

  758. where we

  759. can give

  760. God glory

  761. because he's

  762. been actively

  763. involved

  764. in looking

  765. after us.

  766. But as we

  767. tell our

  768. stories

  769. secondly

  770. we want

  771. to tell

  772. the gospel

  773. story

  774. of Jesus

  775. the Son

  776. of God

  777. who gives

  778. eternal life

  779. and we

  780. think about

  781. spiritual

  782. hunger

  783. and thirst.

  784. What we

  785. think about

  786. different

  787. versions of

  788. that golfer

  789. Scotty

  790. Scheffler

  791. this life

  792. that I'm

  793. living

  794. it's not

  795. a fulfilling

  796. life to

  797. me.

  798. What are

  799. we to do

  800. as the

  801. people of

  802. God?

  803. We

  804. lovingly

  805. bring them

  806. to Jesus.

  807. We heard

  808. Jesus

  809. speak to

  810. a profoundly

  811. dissatisfied

  812. and troubled

  813. woman in

  814. John 4

  815. water.

  816. I can

  817. give you

  818. living

  819. water.

  820. I can

  821. truly

  822. satisfy

  823. your

  824. thirst.

  825. We

  826. began

  827. with

  828. Jesus

  829. words

  830. spoken

  831. to a

  832. crowd

  833. after

  834. the

  835. feeding

  836. of

  837. the

  838. 5,000

  839. and they

  840. were hungry

  841. for another

  842. lunch meal

  843. and Jesus

  844. wanted them

  845. to look

  846. for more.

  847. I'm the

  848. bread of

  849. life.

  850. Whoever

  851. comes to

  852. me

  853. will

  854. never

  855. go

  856. hungry.

  857. Whoever

  858. believes

  859. in me

  860. will never

  861. be thirsty.

  862. stay.

  863. In many

  864. ways the

  865. story of

  866. Jesus

  867. parallels

  868. with the

  869. story of

  870. Elijah.

  871. But there's

  872. an important

  873. difference.

  874. Elijah the

  875. servant of

  876. the Lord

  877. was spared

  878. from suffering

  879. on this

  880. occasion.

  881. But Jesus

  882. the servant

  883. of the Lord

  884. was not

  885. spared

  886. suffering.

  887. He would

  888. know

  889. thirst

  890. as he

  891. hung

  892. dying on

  893. the cross.

  894. He was

  895. a servant

  896. who was

  897. not spared

  898. from going

  899. under God's

  900. judgment,

  901. under God's

  902. curse.

  903. Not because

  904. of anything

  905. he had done,

  906. not because

  907. of any

  908. disloyalty

  909. on his

  910. part,

  911. but for

  912. our sin,

  913. our rebellion,

  914. our

  915. idolatry.

  916. And that

  917. Jesus who

  918. died for us

  919. is now

  920. alive.

  921. And from

  922. heaven he

  923. sends the

  924. Spirit.

  925. He lives

  926. in us.

  927. From

  928. heaven he

  929. gives us

  930. that life

  931. that is

  932. true life,

  933. that is

  934. eternal

  935. life.

  936. Maybe we

  937. find ourselves

  938. here even

  939. today and

  940. our hearts

  941. have become

  942. a little bit

  943. like Ahab

  944. or a little

  945. bit like

  946. Israel.

  947. We're looking

  948. to find

  949. true satisfaction,

  950. security,

  951. and our hearts

  952. have been

  953. turning away

  954. from God.

  955. maybe you've

  956. tried that.

  957. You've

  958. discovered

  959. ultimately the

  960. falling in the

  961. way of the

  962. world doesn't

  963. lead to life

  964. and satisfaction.

  965. Well,

  966. let's

  967. together let

  968. Elijah's story

  969. direct us

  970. and direct us

  971. back and

  972. direct us

  973. again to

  974. the Lord

  975. Jesus,

  976. that we

  977. would eat,

  978. that we

  979. would drink,

  980. and that we

  981. would live.

  982. Let's

  983. pray together.
