  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me, actually, to know, as I'm preaching, how to

  11. deal with the types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Let's just bow our heads in prayer. Father, we give you thanks and praise that your infallible

  13. word not only reveals the truth about you and the truth about salvation, but also reveals to us who

  14. we really are, who we really are at the depths of our soul and in our day-to-day lives. We ask,

  15. Father, that your Holy Spirit would gently work in us so that your word would form us. And we ask this

  16. in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior. Amen. Please be seated. Sort of interesting to do a sermon with

  17. the sounds of happy children in the background. That's a nice thing to have happen. One of the

  18. things that causes people trouble is dealing with people who think they're always right.

  19. I think every single one of us would know at least one person who thinks that they're always right.

  20. It would also probably horrify us if we were to discover that some people hearing this are

  21. thinking about us because we don't think we're always right. But it is in fact a human problem

  22. that there are some people at all the time who think that they're always right. And there are

  23. most people who think that is true of themselves, at least sometimes. Some of us have suffered under

  24. people who think that they're always right. And so it's actually made us quite insecure and sort of beat up.

  25. And the other thing is, especially nowadays, a lot of people like to attach themselves to individuals

  26. or movements or political ideologies or spiritualities that claim to be always right on everything.

  27. And we attach ourselves to these types of groups and it just causes lots of trouble in our society,

  28. in our day-to-day life. I mean, one of the things which we all know of, it's very hard to have

  29. just a charitable, good faith, political discussion with people nowadays. If they find out a certain

  30. thing about you, you're not just wrong, you're like the devil incarnate. It's increasingly hard in our

  31. culture to have just a good faith conversation with people because there's this belief of infallibility.

  32. So the Bible has some profound wisdom and help into this human problem of people thinking that

  33. they're infallible or movements thinking that they're infallible. The Bible has, believe it or not,

  34. some very profound and wise help and it has it in a very surprising way. So we're going to look at the

  35. Bible. It's Acts chapter 15. We haven't announced this for a couple of weeks, but one of the things that

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  36. we're doing, we're preaching through the book of Acts. That's why I'm preaching on this topic today.

  37. We're going to be looking at Acts chapter 15, 35 to following. We've bought these very nice ESV

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  38. journal Bibles, nice paper, just the text on one side, blank on the other, for people to take notes

  39. and ask questions. They're available for you for free up at the front if you want to grab one.

  40. You can even do it now if you want, or you can get it after the service as a gift. And I'm going to be

  41. reading from that on page 92. And here's the text. But just before I read the text, it's a really odd

  42. text. Not just what Chris read, but a little bit after. It's sort of like, it's as if there's these

  43. big sections in the book of Acts and there's a few little detaily types of things between these

  44. big sections. And that's what we're going to be looking at. One of those little detaily type things.

  45. Because the book of Acts begins with Jesus appearing alive to his disciples and ascending

  46. into heaven. And then it moves to this thing called the day of Pentecost. And then we see the early

  47. life of Christians and the gospel being accepted by many Jewish people in Jerusalem. And the gospel

  48. means trusting Jesus as your Savior and Lord. Then we see the start of persecution against Christians.

  49. And then we see the gospel making this leap across an ancient divide to Samaritans. And then a little

  50. bit after that, we see the gospel making an even bigger leap across an even bigger divide with pagans

  51. starting to become Christians. And then we see the gospel really starting to go the very first missionary

  52. journey as the gospel goes farther and farther into pagan lands and more Jewish people and Christians

  53. farther away become Christians. And that causes a problem which is what just happens just before this.

  54. And a decision is made about what it means for a pagan to become a Christian. And what we're looking at

  55. right now is just between that decision that comes at the end of the first missionary journey

  56. and the launching of the rest of the book which is going to be two more missionary journeys and Paul's

  57. imprisonment and death. And this is how Luke has decided to structure his eyewitness-based account

  58. of the first 30 or so years of the Jesus movement. And he wrote it while eyewitnesses are still alive.

  59. So that's sort of where we are with a jumble of things. And here's what's... Actually, before I read it,

  60. here's the big idea of these three different... Four different stories that we're going to look at. Four short

  61. little stories. If you could put it up, that would be great, Claire. And this is the big idea.

  62. There is a holy mystery in how the infallible, authoritative, life-giving word of the Lord

  63. comes to fallible, self-centered, death-doomed human beings, me included. I read it again.

  64. There is a holy mystery in how the infallible, authoritative, life-giving word of the Lord

  65. comes to fallible, self-centered, death-doomed human beings, me included. Now, some of you might say,

  66. George, whoa, George, one moment. You said the Bible's going to have some helpful wisdom and advice

  67. about dealing with people who think they're infallible. Did you hear what you just said?

  68. Don't you think if people think that the Bible is infallible, that you're just weaponizing

  69. people's sense of infallibility? Like, you've just weaponized the problem. You haven't solved it.

  70. The Bible is weaponizing the problem. And frankly, the whole idea is ridiculous, George,

  71. that there could be an infallible word of God. And George, you know, not only is it ridiculous,

  72. it's dangerous, it's anything other than, it's just not wise to say something like that.

  73. Well, why am I saying it? Well, let's look at the text. Acts chapter 15, beginning at verse 35.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  74. And after, but Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, that's a city in Syria,

  75. teaching and preaching, note this, the word of the Lord with many others also.

  76. And after some days, Paul said to Barnabas, let us return and visit the brothers and sisters

  77. in every city where we proclaimed, note this, the word of the Lord and see how they are.

  78. So you'll notice here, twice, once each, in each verse, very close together, we have this phrase,

  79. the word of the Lord. And the word of the Lord is, if you go back and do a word search, it appears

  80. not only like that verbatim many times in the book of Acts, but different synonyms of the same thing

  81. appear many, many times in the book of Acts. And in the original language, the word of the Lord has a

  82. double meaning. And what it means, it comes from the Old Testament, what our Jewish friends call

  83. the Tanakh, and it has this double meaning. It could be translated as saying the word from the Lord,

  84. and it could also be translated as saying the word about the Lord. It has a double meaning.

  85. It's saying two things, complementary things at the same time, and the original readers and the

  86. original hearers would have understood this. And so taking the Old Testament meaning, it is saying

  87. literally this, this is a word from God. These are words from the lips, so to speak, I know the

  88. triune God doesn't have lips, of the triune God. That's just the book of Acts. This is the whole Bible.

  89. That's what I'm holding in my hands, the actual words of the triune God to human beings. That's what

  90. the text is claiming. And it's not just a word from the Lord, it's a word about the Lord. In other words,

  91. it's God's words about himself and our relationship to him in light of the fact that he is God. It's saying

  92. this double thing at the same time. That's why I said there is a holy mystery of how the infallible

  93. authoritative, life-giving word of the Lord comes to fallible, self-centered, death-doomed human beings,

  94. me included. That if in fact it is the very words of the Lord, they are infallible. They are

  95. authoritative. And it could be that they're death-dealing, but we're going to see in a moment

  96. that they're in fact not death-dealing, that they are in fact life-giving if we receive them in the right

  97. type of way. Now, I'm not going to give you any arguments today as to why it's a completely

  98. reasonable thing to believe this. I'll just say one thing about it. What I'm going to talk about

  99. instead really is why we don't want this to be true. Why hearing that the word of the Lord is

  100. infallible and authoritative is something that troubles many, many people. We worry that,

  101. well, we worry that it's going to weaponize human tendencies to think, human beings' tendency to

  102. think that they're infallible. We worry that it will take away our freedom because it's so

  103. authoritative and infallible, that it will overpower us, that it'll take away our freedom, that it will

  104. make us do weird things. That's what we worry about. And I'm going to deal with our worries about it.

  105. I'm not going to give you an argument for why it's a reasonable thing. I just want to say this one thing.

  106. Words are really important, aren't they?

  107. You know, I mean, just, I mean, it's just, on the other hand, it just sounds like the most commonplace

  108. thing in the world, but words are how we commit to each other. You know, words like to my wife that I said,

  109. well, many, many decades ago, will you marry me? You know, those are life-changing words. Words can

  110. wound us. We can, I know people, and probably some of you can think of words that wounded us

  111. decades ago, and they still wound us. And words can bless, and words can heal, and words are very,

  112. very powerful. So just one little thing to people who are wondering about their place in Christianity

  113. or outside of the Christian faith, why is it that most of your understandings, if you're going to have

  114. a God at all, is a God that can't speak?

  115. Like, given how important words are,

  116. why on earth would you pick a God that can't speak? Like, that God is everywhere,

  117. or that God is everything, or that God is some power, some force?

  118. How could that be God?

  119. And if a God,

  120. if the God that you think might exist,

  121. that spiritual power and presence,

  122. if it can't speak, how can it hear you?

  123. How can it understand?

  124. Like, don't you want there to be the case? Doesn't it make sense if there is a God that's worthy of

  125. being God, that he must be a God who speaks?

  126. And how could he be God and speak and be fallible?

  127. That means he's under some other type of standard.

  128. Well, how does that solve or help anything?

  129. Just a question.

  130. But this claim is being made,

  131. and it's the ancient, historic claim,

  132. it's the biblical claim,

  133. that there is an infallible,

  134. that the word of the Lord is infallible and authoritative

  135. and life-giving.

  136. So,

  137. okay, George, you're not going to argue for it,

  138. but it still bothers me.

  139. I still think it's a dangerous thing.

  140. Well, let's look.

  141. The Bible here,

  142. here's what's so interesting about the Bible

  143. and how wise and helpful the Bible is,

  144. that in the same place

  145. where it makes clear by saying it twice,

  146. close to each other,

  147. it then gives a series of stories

  148. that help to nuance

  149. and reveal ourselves to ourselves.

  150. Let's look.

  151. You'll see how wise it is.

  152. We'll read verse 36 again.

  153. And after some days,

  154. Paul said to Barnabas,

  155. let us return and visit the brothers and sisters

  156. in every city

  157. where we proclaim the word of the Lord

  158. and see how they are.

  159. That's the missionary journey

  160. that they just got on together,

  161. Paul and Barnabas.

  162. Verse 37.

  163. Now, Barnabas wanted to take with them

  164. John,

  165. who's also called Mark.

  166. But Paul thought best

  167. not to take with them

  168. one who had withdrawn from them

  169. in Pamphylia

  170. and had not gone with them to the work.

  171. Basically,

  172. if you go back to the earlier story,

  173. John Mark abandons them

  174. when the going got tough.

  175. He abandons them.

  176. Verse 39.

  177. And there arose a sharp disagreement

  178. between Paul and Barnabas

  179. so that they separated from each other.

  180. Barnabas took Mark with him

  181. and sailed away to Cyprus.

  182. But Paul chose Silas and departed,

  183. having been commended by the brothers

  184. to the grace of the Lord.

  185. And he went through Syria,

  186. Cilicia,

  187. strengthening the churches.

  188. Now, just pause here for a second.

  189. This disagreement between Paul and Barnabas

  190. is wrong.

  191. And it's heartbreaking.

  192. And it's shocking.

  193. Some of you who know the Bible a little bit

  194. will know that Paul was, in fact,

  195. one of the early persecutors of Christians.

  196. He consented and aided

  197. in the death and murder of early Christians

  198. and imprisoned them and beat them.

  199. And then he has an encounter

  200. with the risen Jesus

  201. that completely transforms him.

  202. And he ends up being called by Jesus.

  203. He sees Jesus alive.

  204. Jesus says,

  205. you're going to be my apostle

  206. and you're going to do all these things.

  207. And Paul becomes a Christian.

  208. Christian and the disciples,

  209. the early apostles,

  210. are afraid of Paul.

  211. They don't believe

  212. that he's become a Christian.

  213. Who is it,

  214. who is it

  215. that has listened to Paul

  216. and believes him

  217. and introduces him

  218. to the other apostles

  219. and the early Christians?

  220. Who uses,

  221. who puts their authority

  222. and their reputation on the line?

  223. It's Barnabas.

  224. And when Paul goes off to,

  225. he has to flee

  226. because people are after him

  227. because he's preaching the gospel.

  228. And he spends,

  229. you know,

  230. quite a few years

  231. in a certain region

  232. of what we now call Syria,

  233. ministering.

  234. And who is it

  235. who goes and brings him

  236. out of the wilderness

  237. and brings him back

  238. to this very important church

  239. in Antioch

  240. to be a teacher?

  241. It's Barnabas.

  242. Who works side by side

  243. with Paul

  244. for several years

  245. in this important church

  246. in Antioch?

  247. It's Barnabas.

  248. Who is it

  249. who goes on a missionary journey

  250. with Paul,

  251. who suffers together

  252. and is there

  253. when Paul is stoned

  254. and people think

  255. they've stoned him to death

  256. and maybe they have

  257. the text is unclear

  258. whether Paul is brought back to life

  259. or just healed dramatically?

  260. It's Barnabas.

  261. And now they have

  262. a disagreement over people

  263. so strong

  264. that they can't work together.

  265. This is heartbreaking.

  266. And some of you might say,

  267. George,

  268. you've just proved my point.

  269. Thinking there's an infallible Bible

  270. is just going to make it worse.

  271. People are going to think

  272. they're never wrong.

  273. George,

  274. you've just proved my point

  275. about how dangerous it is.

  276. Well,

  277. it's a little bit more subtle than that.

  278. We're going to come back to it.

  279. But we need to see the next bit

  280. before we come back

  281. and talk about

  282. what's really going,

  283. what's going on here.

  284. But it's just very,

  285. very sad.

  286. Well,

  287. what happens next

  288. before we come back

  289. and look at this a bit more?

  290. Look at what happens next.

  291. Sort of the opposite thing,

  292. but it's also distressing

  293. and it touches on

  294. many of our deepest fears

  295. about dealing

  296. with an infallible Bible.

  297. Look at what it says.

  298. Chapter 16,

  299. verse 1.

  300. Paul,

  301. so they've gone

  302. on their missionary journey

  303. and sort of,

  304. if you're sort of looking at it

  305. from this point of view,

  306. the original missionary journey,

  307. they went from here,

  308. down to here,

  309. up to here,

  310. across from here.

  311. And what Paul

  312. and his doing

  313. with his new group,

  314. he's going to go this way,

  315. sort of in reverse order.

  316. And so they come,

  317. chapter 16,

  318. verse 1.

  319. Paul came also

  320. to Derbe and to Lystra.

  321. It was in Lystra

  322. that he got stoned

  323. by the crowd

  324. until he died.

  325. A disciple was there

  326. named Timothy.

  327. A disciple is another way

  328. of describing a Christian.

  329. A better way

  330. to understand

  331. what a Christian is

  332. is that a Christian

  333. is a disciple of Jesus.

  334. It's one of the things

  335. I sometimes talk about

  336. with people

  337. who are outside

  338. the Christian faith

  339. when they ask me

  340. who I am.

  341. I say I'm a disciple of Jesus.

  342. He's my Lord and Master

  343. and my Savior

  344. and I'm his disciple.

  345. Anyway,

  346. a disciple was there

  347. named Timothy,

  348. the son of a Jewish woman

  349. who was a believer

  350. who'd become a Christian,

  351. but his father

  352. was a Greek,

  353. a pagan.

  354. Timothy was well spoken of

  355. by the brothers and sisters

  356. at Lystra and Iconium.

  357. Paul wanted Timothy

  358. to accompany him.

  359. Now notice this.

  360. Don't skip over it.

  361. Men,

  362. let the full weight

  363. of these next few words

  364. hit you.

  365. Timothy's at least

  366. 18,

  367. 19,

  368. and 20

  369. and there are no

  370. anesthetics

  371. back then.

  372. Paul wanted Timothy

  373. to accompany him

  374. and he took him

  375. and circumcised him.

  376. He circumcised him

  377. because of the Jewish people

  378. who were in those places

  379. for they all knew

  380. that his father

  381. was a Greek,

  382. a pagan.

  383. And as they went

  384. on their way,

  385. they,

  386. through the cities,

  387. they,

  388. that's Paul

  389. and Timothy

  390. and Silas

  391. and maybe some others,

  392. delivered to people

  393. they heard

  394. for observance

  395. the decisions

  396. that had been reached

  397. by the apostles

  398. and elders

  399. who were in Jerusalem.

  400. So the churches

  401. were strengthened

  402. in the faith

  403. and increased

  404. in numbers daily.

  405. So here's what's

  406. really weird about this.

  407. Remember,

  408. one of our fears

  409. is an infallible Bible

  410. will cause us

  411. to do weird things

  412. and hurtful things.

  413. And this,

  414. once again,

  415. people say,

  416. George,

  417. you're proving my point

  418. why we don't want

  419. to have an infallible Bible.

  420. Like,

  421. it's making Timothy

  422. do weird

  423. and hurtful things.

  424. I don't want to get

  425. anywhere near

  426. an infallible Bible

  427. and have to do

  428. these weird things.

  429. And it's even weirder

  430. because,

  431. at first glance,

  432. because the decision

  433. that they're telling

  434. everybody about

  435. is that

  436. if you become a,

  437. if you're a pagan

  438. who becomes a Christian,

  439. you don't have to be circumcised.

  440. That's actually the decision.

  441. Go back and read it

  442. in Acts chapter 15.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  443. So people are going like,

  444. George,

  445. this is just crazy talk.

  446. Like,

  447. here Paul goes and says,

  448. you don't have to be circumcised

  449. and Timothy gets circumcised.

  450. What on earth is going on?

  451. Well,

  452. let's,

  453. now we need to go back

  454. and sort of tease out

  455. what's going on.

  456. Remember I said

  457. that there is a holy mystery

  458. in how the infallible,

  459. authoritative,

  460. life-giving word of the Lord

  461. comes to fallible,

  462. self-centered,

  463. death-doomed human beings,

  464. me included.

  465. A holy mystery.

  466. So here's the first thing.

  467. If you could put up A,

  468. that would be great.

  469. It's part of the deep structure

  470. of the Bible.

  471. It's such a,

  472. part of the deep structure

  473. of the Bible

  474. so that you might not

  475. even notice it,

  476. but it forms you

  477. at an unconscious level

  478. while you read it.

  479. Only Jesus is sinless,

  480. therefore,

  481. only he can save.

  482. Only Jesus is sinless,

  483. therefore,

  484. only he can save.

  485. Paul and Barnabas

  486. are revealed

  487. as sinning.

  488. It's going to be

  489. my way or the highway.

  490. My way or the highway.

  491. Okay?

  492. We want highway

  493. because you're not going

  494. my way.

  495. Peter is revealed

  496. in other places

  497. in the Bible

  498. as a sinner.

  499. Mary,

  500. the mother of Jesus,

  501. I apologize to my

  502. Roman Catholic friends,

  503. this is maybe

  504. a bit of a shock,

  505. but Mary is revealed

  506. as one who sins.

  507. That's what the Bible says.

  508. Old Testament,

  509. all the way through,

  510. James,

  511. one of the half-brother

  512. of Jesus,

  513. revealed as one

  514. who sins.

  515. All,

  516. and here we see this.

  517. You go all the way

  518. through the Bible,

  519. you read from Genesis

    Genesis 1:1

  520. chapter 1,

  521. verse 1,

  522. all the way to the end

  523. of the book of Revelation,

  524. there's only one person

  525. who never sins,

  526. and that's Jesus.

  527. Only one

  528. who never sins.

  529. It's Jesus.

  530. It's part of the deep

  531. structure of the Bible.

  532. And, you know,

  533. part of,

  534. when I just said to you,

  535. part of the mystery

  536. about this,

  537. why is Timothy,

  538. we're going to get to that

  539. in a moment,

  540. why is Timothy

  541. being circumcised

  542. when the elders

  543. and the apostles

  544. in Jerusalem

  545. make a formal decree

  546. that pagan men

  547. who become Christians

  548. don't have to get circumcised

  549. and they don't have to follow

  550. what our Jewish friends

  551. call the tenacity,

  552. back in what we call

  553. the Old Testament.

  554. Why did they say that?

  555. It's because they understood

  556. what Jesus said

  557. time and time

  558. and time and time

  559. again of this.

  560. In fact,

  561. they probably even go back,

  562. if you go back

  563. and you read the Gospel of John,

  564. a historical account of Jesus,

  565. you'll see the very,

  566. very, very first time

  567. any of the apostles

  568. or disciples meet Jesus

  569. is when John the Baptist

  570. points at this guy walking

  571. and, you know,

  572. you just think about this,

  573. make it realistic.

  574. They see Jesus,

  575. his hair would not look

  576. like a Hollywood person.

  577. Maybe it looked like

  578. a Hollywood person

  579. trying to represent,

  580. I don't know,

  581. like after the zombie apocalypse.

  582. You know,

  583. I mean,

  584. his hair would have been

  585. a bit untidy

  586. and he maybe had

  587. a little bit of pita bread

  588. in his beard,

  589. you know,

  590. some parsley in his beard

  591. and John the Baptist says,

  592. behold the Lamb of God

  593. who takes away

  594. the sin of the world.

  595. And what they know

  596. that they've come to understand

  597. is that

  598. you go back

  599. and you read the Tanakh

  600. and you understand

  601. that Jesus says

  602. that every single sacrifice

  603. that is required

  604. in the Old Testament

  605. is fulfilled in me.

  606. All of the moral laws

  607. that nobody was able

  608. to keep,

  609. I fulfilled them all.

  610. All of the promises

  611. in the Old Testament

  612. that have been made by God,

  613. I fulfilled them all.

  614. All of the types

  615. and images

  616. in the Old Testament,

  617. I fulfilled them all.

  618. All of the rituals,

  619. I fulfilled them all.

  620. All of the religious obligations,

  621. all of the affection

  622. that is required,

  623. all of these things,

  624. I fulfill them all.

  625. And if you go back

  626. and you read the book

  627. of Leviticus

  628. and this helps us

  629. to understand

  630. a very deep truth

  631. that we understand,

  632. we understand the need

  633. for sacrifice

  634. and you go back

  635. and you read the book

  636. of Leviticus,

  637. you'll see that

  638. the way Leviticus begins

  639. is a way to give you

  640. one of the two keys

  641. to everything going on

  642. in what we call

  643. the Old Testament

  644. but it's also what goes on

  645. in all religions,

  646. which all religions

  647. and spiritualities

  648. understand some type

  649. of a need for sacrifice.

  650. I just watched

  651. that summer block

  652. buster Twisters

  653. and it requires

  654. a sacrifice.

  655. It's seen as

  656. a high virtue

  657. and it begins

  658. with,

  659. you say that

  660. you bring the animal,

  661. an innocent animal

  662. that's done nothing wrong

  663. and the person

  664. who's offering

  665. the sacrifice

  666. puts their hands

  667. on the head

  668. of the animal

  669. and the image there

  670. is that that animal

  671. is going to stand

  672. for the human being

  673. and that in a sense

  674. all of my wrongdoing,

  675. all of things

  676. that make me

  677. out of whack

  678. with God,

  679. all of my shame,

  680. all of those things,

  681. all of that,

  682. that's laid on the hand

  683. of the innocent animal

  684. and that it takes my place

  685. and the innocence,

  686. in a sense,

  687. in a sense comes to me

  688. and that's why you see

  689. it's part of the deep structure.

  690. That's why I say

  691. the infallible word,

  692. the word of the Lord

  693. is not just a word

  694. from God,

  695. it's also a word

  696. about God

  697. and what God has done

  698. about our relationship

  699. with him

  700. and it reveals

  701. that Jesus

  702. is the sinless man

  703. and he fulfills

  704. all of these things

  705. that the entire

  706. Old Testament

  707. is required of

  708. and he dies

  709. in my place.

  710. When I put my faith

  711. and trust in Jesus,

  712. when you put your faith

  713. and trust in Jesus,

  714. that is the same thing

  715. as putting,

  716. it's like you put

  717. your hand in him,

  718. you give yourself

  719. to him

  720. and all of the wrongdoing,

  721. all of the times

  722. I should have done

  723. what was right

  724. and I didn't do it,

  725. all of my times

  726. when I arrogantly thought

  727. that I was infallible

  728. and never wrong,

  729. all of the hurt

  730. that I've done,

  731. all of the shame

  732. that I feel,

  733. all of the uncleanness

  734. that I feel,

  735. all of the things

  736. that I've done

  737. to wound others

  738. and how I've wounded myself,

  739. all of those things

  740. are laid on him

  741. and he takes my place

  742. and deals with

  743. all of the consequences

  744. that are required

  745. and all that's required

  746. to put that right,

  747. that is all laid on him

  748. and he gives me

  749. the standing of being sinless.

  750. That is why only a sinless man

  751. can be the savior,

  752. a sinless person,

  753. in this case a man,

  754. the second Adam.

  755. Only Jesus is sinless,

  756. therefore only he

  757. can save you.

  758. That is so life-giving.

  759. It's not just life-giving

  760. in terms of eternal life,

  761. it's life-giving

  762. in terms of our daily life.

  763. It is a burden

  764. that crushes you

  765. to think you're infallible.

  766. It is a burden

  767. that crushes you

  768. to think that you don't do wrong.

  769. It is what drives us to lie.

  770. It's what drives us

  771. to alcohol and drugs.

  772. It's what drives us

  773. to pornography.

  774. It's what drives us

  775. to arrogance and bullying,

  776. the inability to acknowledge

  777. that we are not right,

  778. that we have done wrong,

  779. that we're not infallible.

  780. It drives us to that

  781. and to come to one

  782. who saves us,

  783. to come to know

  784. that there is something infallible,

  785. that it's not us,

  786. and to know it

  787. in the context of one

  788. who loves you so much

  789. that he dies for you,

  790. it begins to say,

  791. okay,

  792. I was wrong about that.

  793. Okay, yes,

  794. that was my,

  795. I am ashamed of that.

  796. I can acknowledge I'm wrong.

  797. I can acknowledge

  798. I've done things that are wrong.

  799. It provides that context

  800. for us to be free.

  801. It's why it's life-giving.

  802. Now,

  803. what about that weird story,

  804. though,

  805. about the fight, George,

  806. and the circumcision?

  807. Like,

  808. those are still weird.

  809. Like,

  810. that's very interesting to hear

  811. that it's part of the deep structure

  812. of the Bible,

  813. and it's helping us

  814. to understand something important

  815. about Jesus

  816. and something very important

  817. about us.

  818. Well,

  819. remember I said

  820. the overarching story

  821. is that there is a holy mystery

  822. in how the infallible,

  823. authoritative,

  824. life-giving word of the Lord

  825. comes to fallible,

  826. self-centered,

  827. death-doomed human beings,

  828. me included.

  829. And what we can see

  830. by looking at this argument

  831. between them

  832. and the circumcision

  833. is this.

  834. If you could put up B,

  835. that would be helpful, Claire.

  836. The word of the Lord

  837. comes into you

  838. for your good

  839. and his glory

  840. without turning you

  841. into his puppet.

  842. You still sin,

  843. yet sacrificial love

  844. blooms in you as well.

  845. That's partly

  846. what's the mystery

  847. about human beings

  848. and how we change

  849. in Christ.

  850. Right?

  851. He doesn't turn us

  852. into his puppet.

  853. Grace comes in

  854. to perfect our freedom,

  855. not to remove our freedom.

  856. It is for freedom

  857. that Christ died for us.

  858. And so,

  859. it's part of this mystery.

  860. Well,

  861. in heaven,

  862. we'll understand

  863. why it was for our good,

  864. that there are still

  865. parts of me,

  866. and I've been a Christian

  867. since I was 16 years old,

  868. and you can tell by my hair

  869. that was more than

  870. just a few years ago

  871. that I was 16.

  872. And there's parts of me

  873. that the sin

  874. is just really hard

  875. to deal with,

  876. yet at the other time,

  877. that's not the only thing

  878. about me.

  879. There is also things

  880. about me

  881. and things about you

  882. where sacrificial love

  883. blooms.

  884. See,

  885. we see it

  886. in the double story.

  887. Paul needs Jesus

  888. as his savior.

  889. Paul needs Jesus

  890. as his savior.

  891. And at the same time,

  892. why is Timothy,

  893. why is Timothy

  894. doing this?

  895. Why is Timothy,

  896. an 18, 19,

  897. 20-year-old man

  898. with no anesthetic,

  899. willing to get circumcised?

  900. Because he loves

  901. Jewish people.

  902. He loves Jewish people.

  903. And he wants to remove

  904. any barrier

  905. that would stop them

  906. from having him

  907. spend time with him

  908. and tell him about Jesus.

  909. And if that means

  910. he has to be circumcised,

  911. he'll get circumcised

  912. as a sacrifice of love

  913. because he wants

  914. Jewish people

  915. to know Jesus

  916. as their savior and Lord.

  917. That's why he does it.

  918. He knows he doesn't have to,

  919. but he wants to

  920. because he loves

  921. Jewish people.

  922. You see,

  923. there's this mystery

  924. about God's work

  925. in our lives

  926. as the infallible word

  927. and as Jesus

  928. becomes more real

  929. to us as our savior

  930. that there are some things,

  931. friends,

  932. brothers and sisters,

  933. if Jesus doesn't tarry,

  934. there's some sin

  935. in your life

  936. that you're going

  937. to have to struggle with

  938. for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 years,

  939. always struggling with it.

  940. There'll be some great victories

  941. you have over it.

  942. You'll blow some people away

  943. with how you've changed

  944. and there's this act

  945. of sacrificial love

  946. that characterizes you

  947. in some areas

  948. of your life.

  949. And it's a mystery

  950. about how God works in us,

  951. but God's at work in you

  952. if you've given your life

  953. to Christ.

  954. That's the great,

  955. profound promise.

  956. And there's one other thing

  957. about these two stories

  958. and then we'll just close

  959. very briefly

  960. with this next little story

  961. that comes after that,

  962. which you could put up

  963. this, Claire.

  964. It's God's infallible word

  965. does not make you infallible.

  966. Okay?

  967. God's infallible word

  968. does not make you infallible.

  969. It just stands to reason.

  970. You can't have

  971. two infallible sources.

  972. It would be like having

  973. two irresistible forces.

  974. You can't have two irresistible

  975. forces in the universe.

  976. You can only have

  977. one infallible source.

  978. You can't have a second one.

  979. God's infallible word

  980. does not make you infallible.

  981. It humbles you to accept

  982. that you are fallible.

  983. Now, it's not seen

  984. directly in this text,

  985. but it's seen indirectly

  986. in this text.

  987. If you...

  988. It's not on the screen

  989. because I forgot to send it

  990. to Claire.

  991. But most people agree

  992. that the last part

  993. of what we now call

  994. the Bible

  995. was a letter that Paul wrote

  996. to Timothy

  997. and he wrote it to Timothy

  998. just shortly before he dies.

  999. He knows that this time

1000. there's not going to be

  1001. any miraculous escape

  1002. from his life here.

  1003. I can't find it

1004. when I'm looking for it

  1005. in a rush.

1006. He knows that there's not

1007. going to be any miraculous

  1008. escape this time

  1009. and he knows

  1010. he's doing hard time

  1011. in a dungeon

  1012. and he knows

  1013. he's going to die

  1014. a martyr's death.

  1015. And by the way,

  1016. one of the things

1017. he's going to die for,

1018. he dies for a fact.

  1019. He could have saved

1020. his life if he just said,

  1021. okay, I was kidding,

  1022. Jesus didn't rise

  1023. from the dead.

1024. Ha ha, joke's on you.

  1025. I didn't really mean it.

  1026. Didn't rise.

1027. If he had said that,

1028. he would have got out

  1029. of jail.

  1030. But he's not going

  1031. to deny a fact

1032. that he saw Jesus risen.

1033. But look what he says

  1034. right towards the end

  1035. of his life.

  1036. 2 Timothy 4 verse,

  1037. I think it's verse 11.

1038. Luke alone is with me.

  1039. Get Mark

1040. and bring him with you

1041. for he is very useful

  1042. to me for ministry.

  1043. And it's not just

1044. at the end of his life,

1045. but if you go back

  1046. and go searching,

  1047. you'll see that somewhere

  1048. after this,

  1049. Paul realizes

  1050. that he was wrong.

  1051. He's not infallible.

1052. And Paul and Mark reconcile.

  1053. You see, friends,

  1054. God's infallible word

1055. does not make you infallible,

  1056. but it humbles you

1057. to accept that you are fallible.

  1058. And it humbles you

  1059. in another way.

  1060. We'll look at that

  1061. very briefly

  1062. in the final story

  1063. in these final minutes

  1064. of the sermon.

  1065. Look with me

  1066. in verse 6.

  1067. Because you see,

1068. the fact of the matter is

  1069. that some people

  1070. take this text

  1071. to mean

  1072. this idea

  1073. of the infallible Bible

  1074. means all I need

1075. is the Bible and me.

  1076. It's all I need.

  1077. I don't need you.

  1078. I don't need to hear

  1079. what people wrote

  1080. about 100 years ago

  1081. or 500 years ago

  1082. or 1,000 years ago.

1083. All I need is this and me.

1084. I've met lots of people

  1085. like that.

  1086. I've suffered

  1087. under some people

  1088. like that.

  1089. But that's not

  1090. what the Bible teaches.

1091. Look at the next story.

  1092. Verse 6 of chapter 16.

  1093. And they went through

  1094. the region of Phrygia.

  1095. So verse 5 says,

  1096. so the churches

  1097. were strengthened

  1098. in the faith

  1099. and increased

  1100. in numbers daily.

  1101. That's what we should

1102. be praying for our church

1103. so we grow in numbers,

  1104. that each person

  1105. grows in their faith

  1106. and that the church

  1107. grows in numbers.

1108. It's what we should be

  1109. praying for every ministry

  1110. in the church.

  1111. That people involved

  1112. in the ministry,

  1113. you know,

  1114. the men's group

  1115. or the women's group,

  1116. that they grow

  1117. and they strengthen

  1118. their faith

1119. and that the ministries grow.

  1120. We should be praying

  1121. for our missionaries

  1122. that they grow

  1123. in the faith

  1124. and that we have

  1125. more missionaries.

  1126. That's a Christian way

  1127. to pray.

1128. To not pray for growth

1129. is to miss how to pray.

  1130. But verse 6,

  1131. and they went through

  1132. the regions of Phrygia

  1133. and Galatia

  1134. having, note this,

  1135. been forbidden

  1136. by the Holy Spirit

  1137. to speak the word,

  1138. short for the word

  1139. of the Lord,

  1140. in Asia.

  1141. And when they had

  1142. come up to Mysia,

  1143. they attempted

  1144. to go into Bithynia,

1145. but the Spirit of Jesus

  1146. did not allow them.

1147. Two times in a row

  1148. the Spirit says no.

  1149. So passing by Mysia,

1150. they went down to Troas.

  1151. Now just pause here.

1152. The Bible doesn't make clear

  1153. how it is

  1154. that the Holy Spirit

  1155. says no.

  1156. But this isn't just

  1157. a simple no once.

  1158. They walked 400 miles,

  1159. 640 kilometers of walking

  1160. with a regular no

  1161. of the Holy Spirit.

  1162. 640 kilometer walk.

1163. Pushing them in one direction.

1164. They can't go this way,

1165. they can't go this way,

1166. they can't go this way,

1167. they're going to go this way.

1168. We want to go up there,

  1169. no.

1170. Want to go down there,

  1171. no.

1172. Want to go up there,

  1173. no.

1174. Want to go down there,

  1175. no.

1176. No, no, no, no, no.

  1177. Then verse 9.

  1178. And a vision appeared

1179. to Paul in the night.

  1180. A man of Macedonia

  1181. was standing there

  1182. urging him and saying,

  1183. come over to Macedonia

  1184. and help us.

  1185. Paul knows that

  1186. the help they need

1187. is they need to hear

1188. the word of the Lord.

  1189. The best help

  1190. we can give

  1191. to any human being

  1192. is to tell them

  1193. about Jesus.

  1194. And when Paul

  1195. had seen the vision,

  1196. immediately

  1197. we sought to go

  1198. into Macedonia,

  1199. concluding

  1200. that God

  1201. had called us

  1202. to preach

  1203. the gospel to them.

  1204. And you'll notice there

  1205. that the word

  1206. we shows up,

  1207. that Luke,

  1208. the writer of this,

  1209. is now actually

  1210. part of the story.

  1211. But here's the thing,

  1212. in the original language,

  1213. concluding that God

  1214. had called us

  1215. to preach the gospel

  1216. to them,

  1217. it doesn't mean

  1218. that Paul just said,

  1219. whoa,

  1220. I have this vision,

  1221. you guys all

  1222. have to come along.

  1223. Concluding implies

  1224. there was sustained

  1225. conversation

  1226. amongst the brothers

  1227. to discern

  1228. what God

  1229. had called

  1230. them to do.

  1231. It wasn't just,

  1232. I got my Bible

  1233. and I got God

  1234. and I just do

  1235. whatever I

  1236. bloody well want

  1237. because I think

  1238. I'm infallible.

  1239. No,

  1240. here's,

  1241. can you put up

  1242. the point?

  1243. Since you are

  1244. not infallible,

  1245. you need to learn

  1246. his infallible word

  1247. with the help

  1248. of the Holy Spirit

  1249. and other Christ followers.

  1250. So I'm,

  1251. you know,

  1252. I'm broadening out

  1253. the general point

  1254. of the text,

  1255. which is just this,

  1256. that they needed

  1257. the Holy Spirit.

  1258. They needed God's

  1259. help and direction.

  1260. But they also needed

  1261. conversation

  1262. with their brothers.

  1263. And you could add

1264. to make it more extensive,

  1265. brothers and sisters.

  1266. And you could add

1267. for us as a general thing

  1268. as I need help

1269. when I read the Bible

  1270. from people who lived

  1271. a hundred years ago.

1272. I want to tell you

  1273. right now,

1274. if you want to get,

1275. if you just want to buy

  1276. some commentaries

  1277. on the Gospels,

  1278. you cannot beat

  1279. getting J.C. Ryle's

  1280. commentaries on the Gospels.

  1281. And he wrote them

  1282. in the 18th hundreds.

  1283. And they're absolute dynamite.

  1284. We need help

  1285. from earlier generations

  1286. of Christians.

  1287. It's a good thing

  1288. if you discover

  1289. what Augustine

  1290. or Chrysostom said.

  1291. It's a good thing

  1292. if you discover

  1293. what Ambrose

  1294. or Basil the Great

1295. or Calvin or Luther said.

  1296. It's a good thing

  1297. to learn from brothers

1298. and sisters from the past.

  1299. And it's a good thing

  1300. to consult with other

  1301. brothers and sisters today,

1302. to be part of a local church,

1303. to be part of a men's ministry

  1304. or a women's ministry

  1305. or a youth group

  1306. or a small group,

  1307. to come to church,

  1308. to together hear

1309. the word of the Lord

1310. and discuss what it means

  1311. trusting in the help

  1312. of the Holy Spirit.

  1313. That's,

1314. there is a holy mystery

  1315. in how the infallible,

  1316. authoritative,

  1317. life-giving word

  1318. of the Lord

  1319. comes to fallible,

  1320. self-centered,

  1321. death-doomed human beings,

  1322. me included.

1323. And we not only need

1324. the word of the Lord,

1325. we need the Holy Spirit.

  1326. We need conversation

  1327. amongst us.

  1328. Brothers and sisters,

  1329. that's what we need.

  1330. Please stand.

1331. I invite you to stand.

  1332. Just as you're standing,

  1333. if there's any here

1334. or any who are watching,

1335. live or down the stream,

1336. is the word of the Lord

  1337. is for you.

1338. I've just tried to tell you

  1339. what the Bible teaches,

1340. not on my own authority,

  1341. but I have consulted

  1342. with other brothers,

  1343. in this case,

  1344. you know,

  1345. mainly brothers.

  1346. Throughout my life,

  1347. I've learned from brothers

  1348. and sisters,

  1349. and I've studied,

1350. and I try to open

  1351. the word for you,

1352. and this is a word

1353. of the Lord for you,

1354. that Jesus died for you.

1355. He wants to be your Savior

  1356. and your Lord.

1357. And if you just say,

  1358. Jesus,

1359. I want you to be

  1360. my Savior and Lord,

  1361. he's alive.

  1362. He will hear it.

  1363. He will answer it.

1364. He will come into your life.

1365. You come into his life

  1366. and what he's done.

  1367. There is no shame,

  1368. so shameful,

1369. that he will not embrace you.

  1370. There is no sin,

  1371. so highness,

1372. that he has not paid for it.

  1373. There is no woundedness

  1374. or brokenness

  1375. that is so bad

  1376. and so longstanding

1377. that he cannot overcome it.

1378. He sees you as you are,

  1379. and he loves you.

  1380. He died for you.

1381. He'd like to be your Savior

  1382. and your Lord.

  1383. He will welcome you.

  1384. Let's pray.

  1385. Father, you know

  1386. how we believe

  1387. we're infallible.

  1388. And you know,

  1389. Father,

1390. how each one of us

1391. can be blind to that.

  1392. And you know,

  1393. Father,

  1394. how we're a lot better

  1395. at seeing

  1396. in other people

  1397. than we are

  1398. at seeing in ourselves.

  1399. And Father,

  1400. we ask that

  1401. your work of grace

  1402. in our lives

  1403. would continue

1404. so that we would have

  1405. the freedom

  1406. to lift this

  1407. huge crushing burden

  1408. of infallibility

  1409. from us,

  1410. to know and trust

  1411. that only your word

  1412. is infallible

1413. because it comes from you

  1414. who are infallible

  1415. and authoritative.

  1416. So we ask,

  1417. Father,

  1418. that you help us

  1419. to read,

  1420. mark, learn,

  1421. and inwardly digest

  1422. your word.

  1423. We ask that you

  1424. help us to engage

  1425. in humble,

  1426. good faith conversations

  1427. with other Christians

  1428. that we might grow

  1429. and learn

  1430. and be ministered to

  1431. and ministered to others.

1432. That you would grow us

  1433. as a church

1434. and in all of our ministries,

  1435. Father,

  1436. where we're strengthened

  1437. in the faith

1438. and we grow in numbers,

  1439. Father,

  1440. all for our good

  1441. and your glory.

1442. And we ask all these things

1443. in the name of Jesus,

  1444. your Son

  1445. and our Savior,

1446. and all God's people said,

  1447. Amen.

  1448. Let's just be seated.

1449. The service has been shortened.

1450. We're going to go into,

1451. but just before we do announcements,

  1452. I'd like to say

  1453. a couple of prayers.

1454. I know people have to go

  1455. to the bathroom

  1456. and all that's good,

1457. but we need to say

  1458. a couple of prayers

  1459. before we go into,

  1460. I'll do the announcements

1461. and then we'll set the table

  1462. for the Lord's Supper.

1463. Some of you might know

  1464. there's a very momentous day

1465. happening in a couple of days

1466. in the United States of America.

  1467. It would be wrong

  1468. if we didn't pray

  1469. for our friends

  1470. south of the border.

1471. So let's just pray for that

1472. and a couple of other things as well.

1473. Let's just bow our heads

  1474. in prayer

  1475. and yeah,

  1476. let's just pray.

  1477. Father,

  1478. we thank you.

  1479. We thank you

1480. that we get to live

1481. beside the United States of America

1482. and there are many things

  1483. about that country

  1484. that are great

  1485. and of course,

  1486. many things about it,

  1487. that country

1488. that they need to repent of

  1489. and that are worrisome.

  1490. We ask,

  1491. Father,

1492. that you would have mercy

  1493. on our friends

  1494. to the south,

  1495. that in your mercy

  1496. you would grant them

  1497. a government

  1498. better than they deserve,

1499. that you would raise up

  1500. men and women

  1501. despite whatever rhetoric

  1502. they might say now,

1503. that you would move their hearts

  1504. and move their wills,

  1505. that they would seek

  1506. the true good

  1507. of that whole nation,

  1508. the true prosperity

  1509. of all the people

  1510. in that nation

1511. and that they would be

  1512. a force of good

  1513. in the world.

  1514. Father,

1515. we ask that you would,

1516. that regardless of who wins

  1517. and who loses,

  1518. that you would work

1519. in the hearts of the winners,

1520. that that would be the result.

  1521. And Father,

  1522. we ask for ourselves

1523. who will be having an election

1524. before we know it as well,

1525. that you will have mercy on us,

1526. that you give us leaders

  1527. better than we deserve.

  1528. Father,

  1529. we also pray

  1530. for the other gospel-hearted,

  1531. gospel-centered churches

  1532. in this city.

1533. We ask that you grow

  1534. the bonds of affection

  1535. between our churches,

1536. that you would help us all

  1537. to thrive

  1538. in proclaiming Jesus.

  1539. We thank you

  1540. for the missionaries

  1541. that we support

  1542. and missionaries

1543. who are part of our congregation.

1544. We think of those involved

  1545. in outreach

  1546. to international students

  1547. at Ottawa U,

1548. and we think of our brother here

1549. preparing to go to Asia

  1550. to work once again

  1551. as a missionary,

  1552. and the other missionaries

  1553. that we support

  1554. around the world

  1555. in North Africa

  1556. and in South America

1557. and in the rest of Africa.

  1558. The missionaries

1559. that we're about to support

  1560. as well,

  1561. ministering to Afghanistan

  1562. and in Kuwait.

  1563. Father,

  1564. we ask your blessing

  1565. upon these missionaries,

1566. and we ask that you

  1567. increase our generosity

1568. towards these really important works.

  1569. And Father,

1570. we ask that you bless

  1571. those who still work

  1572. in the public square,

1573. whether it's in the civil service

1574. or whether it's in private industry

  1575. or in the arts

  1576. or education.

  1577. We ask, Father,

  1578. that you help them

  1579. to work well

  1580. for your glory,

  1581. grant them wisdom

  1582. and discernment,

  1583. how they can speak

1584. into their places of work

1585. and their places of influence

  1586. in a way

  1587. that's good

  1588. and true

  1589. and just

  1590. and merciful

  1591. and wise

  1592. so that our city

  1593. and our nation

  1594. will thrive.

1595. And for all of us,

  1596. Father,

1597. we ask that you help us

  1598. to have a winsome,

  1599. humble courage,

  1600. to share the gospel.

1601. Help us to recognize opportunities

  1602. to share the gospel.

  1603. And Father,

1604. we all have loved ones

  1605. that we are praying

1606. will come to a saving faith

  1607. in Jesus.

  1608. And we ask, Father,

  1609. that you would bring

  1610. our loved ones

  1611. to a saving faith

1612. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1613. And we ask these things

1614. in the name of Jesus,

1615. your Son and our Savior.

  1616. Amen.
