  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray

  4. for us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the

  11. types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. And you must bow our heads in prayer. Father,

  13. we give you thanks and praise that even before we were born, you loved us, and that there has never

  14. been a point in time in our lives that you have not loved us. We thank and praise you that you,

  15. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons, one God, are the God. You are the God of love,

  16. of true, deep, eternal, universe-creating, salvation-giving love. And we ask, Father,

  17. as we open your word this morning, you know the anxieties and the fears of our hearts. You know the

  18. things which are troubling us. And we ask that your Holy Spirit would bring your word and your love,

  19. the person of Christ, deep into our hearts to form us and to comfort us. And we ask these things

  20. in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen. Please be seated.

  21. Once again, oh, I guess we don't have many of them left. They've all been taken. Oh yeah,

  22. there are a few of these left if you want a scripture journal with the Book of Acts in it. There's some

  23. there if you'd like one for your own personal use. We're all familiar with the phrase, in fact,

  24. probably some of us have said it to other people sometimes, and probably some of us have had it

  25. said to us, it's not all about you. It's not all about you. Maybe if we don't say it to somebody,

  26. we think, you know, the problem with them is they think it's all about them, but it's not all about

  27. them. We think that. And, you know, that's, it's true. And a lot of times it's very needed. But,

  28. and there's a big but, one of the times when people say it to us, this is what we think.

  29. Well, I might agree that it's not all about me, but you seem to think it's all about you.

  30. You, you're just saying it's not all about you to, to me, but inwardly I think you still think it's,

  31. it's all about you. And that's a problem. And sometimes as well, when people say this,

  32. or when we hear it, and I'm not saying there's never any truth in it. In fact,

  33. the point of my sermon is, in fact, that there's a very profound truth that it's not all about you,

  34. but it doesn't have these other features which make it very problematic,

  35. is that often it's said in such a way that it makes it sound as if the valid needs that you have

  36. and that I have, that my valid needs, my valid desires, and the justice that I think is required

  37. is going to be denied to me. And so we have some problems with that phrase and how it's used.

  38. The Bible text that we're going to look at today actually has a lot of wisdom about this whole

  39. situation. It's not about you. And some of the problems we have with either saying it,

  40. believing it, receiving it, the inconsistencies, all of that, there's actually great wisdom in the

  41. Bible about this. So if you would take your Bibles with me, we're preaching through the book of Acts,

  42. and today we're at Acts chapter 16, and we're going to be beginning at verse 11. Acts 16,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  43. beginning at verse 11. If you're using these, it's on page 94.

  44. And just in terms of the context of the story, Paul and this man by the name of Silas,

  45. and a man by the name of Timothy, and later on there's going to be two books in the Bible named

  46. after him called 1 and 2 Timothy, and Luke. And later on Luke is going to write a gospel,

  47. and in fact this book, the book of Acts. And the four of them at least, they're on a missionary

  48. journey in what we now call of Turkey. And it's as if they've come from this way,

  49. doing their second, this is the second missionary journey for Paul, and they come to this situation

  50. where the Holy Spirit says no, they want to go this way, and the Holy Spirit says no, and then they

  51. think of going this way, but the Holy Spirit says no. And that's sort of interesting enough,

  52. and the Bible doesn't tell you how they know that it's no, but it's interesting enough that that happens.

  53. But what is actually even more profound is that they walk for 400 miles, that's 640 kilometers,

  54. walking, constantly getting a no to go that way, and a no to go that way. It's almost as if they're

  55. the sheep and God is herding them down the road. They're not going to go back, they've already been

  56. there. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. They keep going, and finally at the end, they have a vision, Paul has a vision,

  57. and one of the things we then discover is that all along the line, there's been, it's not just been this

  58. one guy making these absolute decisions, but the four of them have been talking and thinking and praying

  59. about it, and they come to the conclusion after the vision that God is calling them to listen to the vision,

  60. to go to Macedonia, and they go. And that's now where our story continues. Verse 11.

  61. So setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis,

  62. and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony,

  63. we remained in this city some days. Now, okay, I'm odd. Odd things amuse me, and I think they're cool.

  64. This is really cool. You know why it's really cool? When these four dudes step off of the boat

  65. onto the dock, the first Christians have entered the continent of Europe.

  66. That is cool.

  67. They don't come with armies.

  68. Just four guys.

  69. Now, Roman Empire, it's one of the things that's really neat that it's even recorded,

  70. because you see, for Romans, they didn't know about continents. It was just all part of the Roman Empire.

  71. From a Roman perspective at that historical time, from Luke's point of view,

  72. they were just going from one province to another.

  73. But now we know that this is the very first Christians to come to the continent of Europe,

  74. and Europe is the first continent that would be massively evangelized.

  75. And it starts with this.

  76. I think that's cool.

  77. Well, there's something else which happens which is just as cool.

  78. And if you're thinking, rolling your eyes,

  79. yeah, George, you're really lame.

  80. Lame things amuse you. That's fine.

  81. I own that, okay?

  82. But look at what happens in verse 13.

  83. And on the Sabbath day, we went outside the gate to the riverside,

  84. where we supposed there was a place of prayer.

  85. And we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.

  86. And just sort of pause.

  87. What this is telling us is that there weren't ten Jewish men in the city,

  88. or if there were ten Jewish men,

  89. there weren't ten Jewish men who cared a hoot about being Jewish.

  90. So there's not enough people to form a synagogue,

  91. but there's a group of women, maybe the odd men,

  92. but it just looks like it's only women.

  93. And they're gathering to pray.

  94. And it continues, verse 14.

  95. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia,

  96. from the city of Thyatira,

  97. a seller of purple goods,

  98. who was a worshiper of God.

  99. And what that means is that she's a pagan,

  100. but she's heard about the God of Israel,

  101. what we would call the Old Testament,

  102. our Jewish friends, the Tanakh.

  103. And she now wants to start living her life

  104. according to what we call the Old Testament.

  105. And she wants to worship the God of Israel.

  106. But she hasn't officially become Jewish.

  107. So one of the people listening was a worshiper of God.

  108. And then here's this really, really neat phrase.

  109. The Lord opened her heart

  110. to pay attention to what was said by Paul.

  111. I'm going to return to that in a moment.

  112. And after she was baptized,

  113. so the Lord opens her heart

  114. and she becomes a Christian.

  115. So Paul speaks.

  116. She's listening.

  117. And God does something silently

  118. in the very center of her

  119. to open up the very center of her

  120. to receive the message about Jesus

  121. and to become a Christian.

  122. Verse 15.

  123. After she was baptized

  124. and her whole household as well,

  125. she urged us saying,

  126. if you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord,

  127. come to my house and stay.

  128. And she prevailed upon us.

  129. Now, here's what's really cool.

  130. Lydia is the first European Christian.

  131. You know what else is cool about that?

  132. The scholarly research

  133. leads to the conclusion

  134. that not only is she a pagan,

  135. who's now become a Christian,

  136. she's a former slave,

  137. who has become a Christian,

  138. and she's a single mom,

  139. who's become a Christian,

  140. because in Roman law,

  141. to enter into contracts without a man,

  142. you need to be a woman

  143. who's had four children.

  144. So because she is a business owner

  145. and hence has to enter into business deals,

  146. she's probably a single mom.

  147. So she's a former pagan,

  148. a former slave.

  149. She's a single mom,

  150. and she's an entrepreneur,

  151. and she is the first European Christian.

  152. I think that's really cool.

  153. We know her name.

  154. And here's a point.

  155. Actually, first,

  156. if you could put point number one,

  157. Claire, that would be very helpful.

  158. Here's the overarching,

  159. sort of the big point.

  160. There's a second big point,

  161. which I'm just going to leave

  162. as sort of a reveal at the end.

  163. But it's this,

  164. as we're looking at this text,

  165. the true God.

  166. See, that's what we Christians are claiming.

  167. This is the true God revealing himself.

  168. And we're going to look at a story

  169. where the true God can shake the planet,

  170. unlock shackles,

  171. remove demons,

  172. and open your heart

  173. to believe in the Lord Jesus

  174. and to be saved.

  175. That's the big message of the text,

  176. one of the big messages of the text.

  177. The true God can shake the planet,

  178. unlock shackles,

  179. remove demons,

  180. and open your heart

  181. to believe in the Lord Jesus

  182. to be saved.

  183. And the sub-point from this,

  184. just before we go any further,

  185. is this.

  186. If you could put up 1A,

  187. that would be helpful, Claire.

  188. 1A.

  189. The Lord who loves you

  190. asks you to speak to others about Jesus.

  191. And he asks you to speak

  192. knowing that he will open hearts.

  193. The Lord who loves you

  194. asks you to speak to others about Jesus

  195. knowing that he will open hearts.

  196. You see, that's what a text,

  197. the text doesn't say,

  198. boy, Paul gave the most unbelievable speech.

  199. He told 10 jokes

  200. that they're still talking about today,

  201. years later.

  202. He gave this analogy

  203. and a metaphor

  204. that brought tears to people's eyes.

  205. He was just on fire.

  206. His rhetoric,

  207. he was just fantastic.

  208. He was awesome.

  209. He doesn't say anything like that.

  210. He spoke.

  211. But actually, later on in the,

  212. if you go and look at his letters,

  213. you'll see that one of the complaints

  214. that people make about him,

  215. you know what one of the complaints

  216. that people make about Paul was?

  217. That he wasn't very good at speaking.

  218. I'm not making that up.

  219. You know, a guy,

  220. he's not very good at rhetoric,

  221. hasn't been trained,

  222. he's untaught.

  223. What a doofus.

  224. So it's not his rhetoric,

  225. but he just shares.

  226. This is really encouraging to us.

  227. Just tell people about Jesus.

  228. It's God's job to open hearts.

  229. Don't intentionally do a sucky job,

  230. but just,

  231. God knows you're weak.

  232. He knows I'm weak.

  233. Well, what happens?

  234. Well, something actually very dramatic happens,

  235. and before we go any further,

  236. the next bit of the story

  237. is going to talk about a demon.

  238. And, you know,

  239. our country is divided

  240. into two classes of people,

  241. fundamentally.

  242. Well, I guess there's three types.

  243. There's one type

  244. that never think about anything

  245. that they can't eat,

  246. drink,

  247. or, you know,

  248. make more money,

  249. or they're just consumed,

  250. like, you know,

  251. with what's going on next.

  252. But apart from that,

  253. most people in our country

  254. either just find

  255. the whole idea of demons

  256. existing completely impossible.

  257. It's something they would treat with scorn.

  258. It would be something

  259. that if you were to say

  260. you believed in them,

  261. they, it would,

  262. even if they didn't say it to your face,

  263. they'd believe that it shows

  264. that you're an ignorant,

  265. foolish,

  266. uneducated person.

  267. And on the other hand,

  268. there's many people

  269. in our culture

  270. who lean in

  271. when you hear about demons

  272. or angels

  273. or telling of fortunes.

  274. They're very curious about this.

  275. They have a fascination with it,

  276. and they definitely believe

  277. that it happens.

  278. I'm not going to argue

  279. for the text.

  280. I'm just going to tell you

  281. that part of the text

  282. is that the Christian faith

  283. does believe

  284. that angels and demons exist.

  285. And as we're going to see,

  286. Christians believe

  287. because we've been taught

  288. ultimately by Jesus

  289. that demons can,

  290. in fact,

  291. influence human beings,

  292. can oppress them

  293. and harass them.

  294. And the text

  295. that we're reading,

  296. I'm not going to go

  297. into it very much,

  298. but one of the things

  299. which is very true

  300. of this text

  301. in all of the book of Acts

  302. is that Luke

  303. gets the titles right.

  304. So later on,

  305. it's going to talk,

  306. I don't know if it uses

  307. in our version

  308. the word like police people

  309. or officers or whatever,

  310. but in the original language,

  311. he uses the right name

  312. for who would be doing that

  313. in that context.

  314. They use agora.

  315. They use the right titles

  316. of officials.

  317. They use the right,

  318. he uses the right titles

  319. for magistrates

  320. and for cops.

  321. Everything he does,

  322. he does it completely accurate

  323. for that context.

  324. So it's an historical account

  325. and the Luke's claim

  326. is this is what actually happened.

  327. And so we Christians

  328. believe that these things are real.

  329. And if you want,

  330. give me a call,

  331. I'll buy you a coffee,

  332. I can give you some reasons

  333. why it's reasonable to believe

  334. and important to believe

  335. that demons actually exist.

  336. But let's see what this story does.

  337. It's going to talk about demons

  338. and here's what happens next.

  339. It's verse 16.

  340. As we were going

  341. to the place of prayer,

  342. that's so a little bit later,

  343. doesn't say it's a week

  344. or two weeks

  345. or three weeks

  346. or whatever,

  347. but sometime later,

  348. we were going

  349. to the place of prayer.

  350. We were met

  351. by a slave girl,

  352. a young girl

  353. who's a slave,

  354. who had a spirit of divination

  355. and brought her owners

  356. much gain by fortune telling.

  357. Now this text actually

  358. is quite remarkably accurate.

  359. Some of the other versions

  360. to try to help us

  361. to understand it better

  362. aren't quite as accurate

  363. as this text

  364. is quite accurate.

  365. The one thing

  366. they don't say is,

  367. and I don't know

  368. why they said I don't say it.

  369. I was saying to my wife

  370. the other day,

  371. like it's way cooler

  372. to you to be literal.

  373. In the original language,

  374. it doesn't say

  375. she has a spirit of divination,

  376. although that's what it means.

  377. She has a python spirit.

  378. That's actually

  379. what it says in the Greek.

  380. She has a python spirit

  381. or the spirit of the python

  382. within her.

  383. That's possessing her

  384. and that spirit

  385. uses her for fortune telling.

  386. So just so you know,

  387. a bit of an aside,

  388. Christians believe

  389. that no demon

  390. knows the future.

  391. The dead don't know

  392. the future.

  393. If you go to a seance

  394. or some other type

  395. of activity,

  396. which you shouldn't go to,

  397. it's opening yourself up

  398. to demons,

  399. and they will claim

  400. that they can tell you

  401. the future,

  402. but they are always lying.

  403. No demon can know

  404. the future.

  405. But it's just like

  406. if you've done any reading

  407. about how fortune tellers work.

  408. Fortune tellers work

  409. on preying on your anxiety

  410. and your pride,

  411. your ego.

  412. And they use cues

  413. to read what you're like

  414. and they'll give

  415. ambiguous enough things

  416. that get you excited

  417. and allow them to point

  418. and confuse you

  419. into thinking

  420. that they're telling

  421. something about the future

  422. as if they have powers

  423. or they're open to powers

  424. that allow them to do that

  425. and it's all lies.

  426. And Christians should have

  427. nothing to do with it.

  428. But that's what's going on

  429. and she's making piles of dough

  430. for these owners.

  431. Okay?

  432. And it continues.

  433. Verse 17.

  434. So she followed Paul and us

  435. crying out,

  436. these men are servants

  437. of the Most High God.

  438. And by the way,

  439. actually this is not

  440. a good translation

  441. in the Greek.

  442. There's no the.

  443. And so it's added

  444. because it doesn't make sense

  445. in English.

  446. These men are servants

  447. of Most High God.

  448. That's actually what it says

  449. in the original language

  450. which is terrible English.

  451. But you see,

  452. one of the things

  453. that the demon is saying

  454. partial truths

  455. and partial truths

  456. are a way to say,

  457. is a way of lying.

  458. And she's going after,

  459. shouting out very loud,

  460. these men are servants

  461. of the Most High God.

  462. Those of you,

  463. oh sorry,

  464. who proclaims to you

  465. and,

  466. sorry, no,

  467. it does say the Most High God.

  468. I got that wrong.

  469. It does say that.

  470. These men are servants

  471. of the Most High God

  472. who proclaim to you

  473. way of salvation.

  474. There's no the

  475. before way of salvation.

  476. And those of you

  477. who've read

  478. the C.S. Lewis's

  479. science fiction trilogy,

  480. this is like Weston

  481. dealing with Ransom

  482. and keeping him awake

  483. by speaking all the time.

  484. Those of you

  485. who haven't read it,

  486. everybody should read

  487. the science fiction books

  488. by C.S. Lewis.

  489. Anyway,

  490. this verse 18,

  491. and this she kept doing

  492. for many days.

  493. Paul,

  494. having become greatly annoyed,

  495. turned,

  496. and look what he says,

  497. it says here,

  498. and he says,

  499. not to her,

  500. but to the spirit.

  501. He speaks to the demon.

  502. So he'd look at you

  503. in the eyes,

  504. but he's not speaking to you,

  505. he's speaking to the demon.

  506. And he says,

  507. I command you

  508. in the name of Jesus Christ

  509. to come out of her.

  510. And it came out

  511. that very hour.

  512. Now,

  513. just sort of pause here.

  514. Remember,

  515. the big point

  516. is that the true God

  517. can shake the planet,

  518. unlock shackles,

  519. remove demons,

  520. and open your heart

  521. to believe in the Lord Jesus

  522. and to be saved.

  523. But here we see,

  524. if you could put up 1B,

  525. Claire,

  526. that would be helpful.

  527. The Lord who loves you

  528. shows that you should

  529. cast out demons

  530. in the name of Jesus.

  531. The Lord who loves you

  532. shows that you

  533. should cast out demons

  534. in the name of Jesus.

  535. Now,

  536. why did Paul not do it

  537. a bit earlier?

  538. Well,

  539. we're going to see why

  540. probably in a moment

  541. when we see what happens.

  542. Look what happens.

  543. And by the way,

  544. what's about to happen

  545. is something

  546. that we should pray

  547. very, very, very deeply

  548. does not happen

  549. in Canada.

  550. We all know

  551. that on one level

  552. it does happen in Canada,

  553. but we should pray

  554. that our country

  555. moves away

  556. from anything like this,

  557. that we should move

  558. to a,

  559. that we should be praying

  560. that our country

  561. develops just laws

  562. and those who enforce

  563. the laws

  564. not be corrupt.

  565. We should pray

  566. into that.

  567. What we're going to see

  568. here in the next bit

  569. is how it is

  570. in much of the world

  571. and throughout

  572. much of history.

  573. Some of you

  574. have come from countries

  575. where what is being

  576. described next

  577. is a very normal occurrence.

  578. Look what happens.

  579. Verse 19.

  580. And just,

  581. by the way,

  582. the implication

  583. of the original language

  584. is that this young girl

  585. made lots of money

  586. for these men.

  587. Lots of money.

  588. So these are rich,

  589. powerful men

  590. and they're citizens

  591. of the city.

  592. Paul and Silas

  593. are outsiders.

  594. They're outsiders.

  595. So verse 19,

  596. but when her owners

  597. saw that their hope

  598. of gain was gone,

  599. and that's,

  600. by the way,

  601. a whole other thing.

  602. It's really interesting

  603. that,

  604. so it's not as if

  605. Jono and I,

  606. I don't know,

  607. Jono says he has a demon

  608. and I say I'm going

  609. to cast a demon

  610. out of him,

  611. but nobody sees

  612. any difference

  613. with Jono before or after.

  614. Nobody sees anything.

  615. But we just both have

  616. a feeling that something's happened.

  617. And maybe something has happened.

  618. Not that you have

  619. a demon brother,

  620. but maybe something

  621. has happened.

  622. But one of the things

  623. which is interesting here

  624. is that everybody sees

  625. that something has happened

  626. and knows that something

  627. has happened.

  628. That in a sense,

  629. the pagan slave owners

  630. are bearing witness

  631. that Paul has just

  632. cast out a demon.

  633. They don't describe

  634. what's been seen,

  635. but something's been seen.

  636. Something's changed.

  637. The one time

  638. I've been involved

  639. directly in an exorcism,

  640. one of the changes

  641. was that the person

  642. had spoken

  643. a radically different voice,

  644. which went away.

  645. But that doesn't always happen.

  646. That's a whole other topic

  647. of conversation.

  648. Verse 19 again,

  649. but when our owners

  650. saw that their hope

  651. of gain was gone,

  652. they seized Paul and Silas

  653. and dragged them

  654. into the marketplace

  655. before the rulers.

  656. What?

  657. They're not cops.

  658. They didn't break any law

  659. and they didn't do

  660. a bad thing.

  661. But the owners

  662. take it upon themselves

  663. to seize Paul and Silas,

  664. drag them,

  665. and the word for marketplace

  666. there is agora,

  667. so it's the center

  668. of the city.

  669. Verse 20,

  670. it's where the court is,

  671. the municipal offices,

  672. the main temple,

  673. it's the center

  674. of the city

  675. where decisions are made.

  676. And that's where

  677. they drag Paul and Silas.

  678. And it's literally

  679. dragged them.

  680. They overpower

  681. Paul and Silas

  682. and are dragging them.

  683. Paul and Silas

  684. aren't going willingly.

  685. In verse 20,

  686. and when they had brought

  687. Paul and Silas

  688. to the magistrates,

  689. they said,

  690. these men are Jews

  691. and they are disturbing

  692. our city.

  693. They advocate customs

  694. that are not lawful

  695. for us Romans

  696. to accept

  697. or practice.

  698. The crowd joined

  699. in attacking them.

  700. And by the way,

  701. here attacking them,

  702. it's a crowd,

  703. but it's not a mob.

  704. And they're not attacking them

  705. by punching them.

  706. They're calling out

  707. extra reasons

  708. why these two Jewish men

  709. should be punished.

  710. The crowd joined

  711. in attacking them

  712. and the magistrates

  713. tore the garments

  714. off them.

  715. The magistrates

  716. tore the garments

  717. off Paul and Silas,

  718. leaving them,

  719. if not naked,

  720. next to naked,

  721. and gave orders

  722. to beat them

  723. with rods.

  724. That would have been

  725. their equivalent

  726. of police,

  727. to beat them

  728. with sticks.

  729. And when

  730. the officials,

  731. in a sense,

  732. had inflicted

  733. many, many,

  734. many, many blows,

  735. the implication of many

  736. is that you can

  737. almost translate it

  738. as many, many, many.

  739. After they inflicted

  740. many, many, many blows

  741. upon them,

  742. they threw them

  743. into prison,

  744. ordering the jailer

  745. to keep them safely.

  746. In other words,

  747. don't let them go.

  748. Not keep them safely

  749. because, oh, no, no,

  750. we don't want them,

  751. we want them to be safe.

  752. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  753. Make sure they don't get away.

  754. And having received this order,

  755. verse 24,

  756. they put them

  757. into the inner prison

  758. and fastened their feet

  759. in the stocks.

  760. Now, here's what's going on

  761. in this text.

  762. What I say,

  763. this is the world, folks.

  764. This is what we should pray.

  765. I'm sure it's happened

  766. in Canada,

  767. and every time

  768. it happens in Canada,

  769. it's things like this,

  770. an abuse of power,

  771. they should be punished.

  772. We should pray

  773. that we have a society

  774. of laws,

  775. of just laws,

  776. and of freedom

  777. for people,

  778. and of innocent

  779. until declared guilty.

  780. That's what we should be praying

  781. for all of the time,

  782. that we don't slide

  783. into accusing people

  784. and saying,

  785. well, these people

  786. are powerful

  787. and respectable,

  788. and these people

  789. look like the type

  790. of people

  791. who do things wrong,

  792. and these are powerful,

  793. and these are weak,

  794. and these are us,

  795. and these are others,

  796. and so if they say

  797. bad things about the others,

  798. well, what the heck?

  799. Let's beat the others

  800. and throw them in jail.

  801. That's what's happening.

  802. And we see here,

  803. like, it's,

  804. what happened in Amsterdam

  805. the other night

  806. is absolutely horrifying

  807. and despicable.

  808. Despicable.

  809. And the French parliamentarian

  810. who praised it

  811. despicable.

  812. Despicable.

  813. But you can understand

  814. a mob

  815. getting caught up

  816. in the moment.

  817. What's harder

  818. is cultured,

  819. calm arguments

  820. to hate Jewish people.

  821. What is not acceptable

  822. is mainstream media

  823. when they have

  824. anti-Semites

  825. speaking calmly

  826. to millions

  827. and nobody

  828. corrects them.

  829. That's vastly

  830. more evil.

  831. And some of you

  832. might say,

  833. George,

  834. you shouldn't talk

  835. about that

  836. from the pulpit.

  837. This isn't politics,

  838. this is morals.

  839. I don't care

  840. if they vote

  841. conservative,

  842. liberal,

  843. NDP,

  844. green,

  845. or the rhinoceros party.

  846. This is,

  847. we have to speak

  848. against these types

  849. of things happening

  850. in our culture.

  851. So one of the reasons

  852. probably that Paul and Silas

  853. are slow at dealing things

  854. is they can sense

  855. the rampant,

  856. amped anti-Semitism.

  857. anti-Semitism.

  858. And they can sense,

  859. you know what,

  860. it's been said

  861. many, many times

  862. by many people,

  863. one of the first things

  864. that tyrants want to do

  865. is to wrap themselves

  866. in the flag.

  867. That's what these guys

  868. are doing,

  869. wrapping themselves

  870. in the flag

  871. and promoting hatred.

  872. So now here they are,

  873. they're in jail.

  874. And they're,

  875. later on we're going

  876. to find out

  877. that they've been

  878. so badly beaten

  879. that there's open wounds.

  880. And they're going

  881. to be profoundly uncomfortable

  882. because they can't move

  883. because their feet

  884. are in stocks.

  885. And they're in a jail

  886. which would not

  887. be very clean.

  888. And in those days

  889. the only food

  890. that would come

  891. would be if outsiders

  892. brought food

  893. into the jail

  894. because there's no obligation

  895. for the jailer

  896. to give any food.

  897. And what happens next?

  898. Well it's very interesting,

  899. verse 25.

  900. And about midnight

  901. Paul and Silas

  902. were praying

  903. and singing hymns to God

  904. and the prisoners

  905. were listening to them.

  906. Now just pause.

  907. This verse has caused

  908. lots of anxiety

  909. for Christians

  910. throughout the years

  911. and it shouldn't.

  912. This makes Paul and Silas

  913. sound like they were supermen.

  914. And these blows

  915. just bounce off them.

  916. Now you know

  917. maybe that's what went on.

  918. Maybe the Holy Spirit

  919. really anointed them

  920. for unbelievable courage.

  921. But you know

  922. what it could also be?

  923. Jason and I

  924. are the ones

  925. who are beaten.

  926. And we're in the jail.

  927. And you know

  928. Jason is going like this

  929. and I'm going like this

  930. to see if we've,

  931. you know,

  932. some of the tooth we lost,

  933. we've lost them

  934. and maybe we're seeing

  935. if we're going to lose

  936. that tooth.

  937. And we have open wounds

  938. and our feet are in stock

  939. and we're really uncomfortable

  940. and we're really,

  941. really hungry

  942. and we're feeling ashamed

  943. because we got stripped

  944. and beaten in public.

  945. And it starts to get dark

  946. and I say to Jason,

  947. I say,

  948. brother,

  949. can you sleep?

  950. And Jason says to me,

  951. no brother,

  952. I can't sleep.

  953. Are you really?

  954. Yeah,

  955. that's pretty sore.

  956. I can't sleep.

  957. I said,

  958. you know what?

  959. Why don't we pray?

  960. We're not going to sleep anyway.

  961. Why don't we pray

  962. and sing some hymns

  963. just to show them?

  964. Amen.

  965. Because we can't sleep anyway.

  966. We've got our stupid feet

  967. in these stalks.

  968. We're all bleeding

  969. and all of that.

  970. So they sing

  971. and they probably

  972. are also praying

  973. for the salvation

  974. of the prisoners

  975. in the jail

  976. or the people

  977. who beat them.

  978. I mean,

  979. on one level,

  980. that's a supernatural

  981. work of grace

  982. that's possible for all,

  983. that we pray

  984. for our persecutors

  985. and our haters.

  986. Anyway,

  987. verse 25 again,

  988. about midnight,

  989. after about midnight,

  990. Paul and Silas

  991. were praying

  992. and singing hymns to God

  993. and the prisoners

  994. were listening to them

  995. and suddenly

  996. there was a great earthquake

  997. so that the foundations

  998. of the prison

  999. were shaken.

  1000. And then there's

  1001. a separate thing.

  1002. Immediately all the doors

  1003. were opened

  1004. and everyone's bonds

  1005. were unfastened.

  1006. And once again,

1007. we note that it's actually

1008. quite a good translation here.

  1009. Unfastened.

  1010. Not shaken loose

  1011. but unfashioned.

1012. And when the jailer woke

1013. and saw that the prison doors

  1014. were open,

  1015. he drew his sword

1016. and was about to kill himself

  1017. supposing that the prisoners

  1018. had escaped.

  1019. Now just pause here.

1020. Why was he doing this?

  1021. So first of all,

  1022. there's a double miracle

  1023. that goes on here

1024. and if there'd just been

  1025. an earthquake,

  1026. people could say,

  1027. well,

  1028. it's just a coincidence.

1029. But there's both an earthquake

1030. and at the same time

  1031. their shackles,

  1032. the doors open

  1033. and their shackles

  1034. are unfastened.

  1035. And the jailer,

  1036. woken up

  1037. by the earthquake,

  1038. goes out to see

  1039. what's going on.

  1040. And by the way,

  1041. the whole city

  1042. would have been affected

  1043. by this earthquake

1044. and he sees the jail doors open.

  1045. Now, historically,

  1046. the jailer was either

1047. one of two types of people.

  1048. He was either

  1049. a retired soldier

  1050. or more likely,

  1051. in those days,

  1052. cities could own slaves.

  1053. So he was actually

1054. very likely to be a slave,

  1055. a senior slave

  1056. in the municipal government.

  1057. And later on,

1058. when I'm going to talk

  1059. about his household,

  1060. the implication of that

  1061. is that he's a slave owner

  1062. who also owns slaves.

  1063. The whole ancient world

  1064. was unbelievably messed up.

  1065. Right?

1066. You can be a slave

  1067. and own a slave.

  1068. You can,

  1069. and anyway,

  1070. but you see,

  1071. in the ancient world,

  1072. because he's a slave,

1073. but even if he was

  1074. just a Roman soldier,

1075. but if he was a slave,

1076. if he lets these prisoners

  1077. go under his watch,

  1078. the punishment is

  1079. crucifixion.

1080. And from all of the accounts

  1081. of the ancient world,

1082. if you have a choice

  1083. of dying by crucifixion

  1084. or a cutting of a sword

  1085. in your body,

1086. you're going to pick the sword.

1087. You don't want to die

  1088. over many days

  1089. naked outside the city

  1090. with birds landing on.

  1091. You know,

1092. I don't want to go any further.

  1093. It's gruesome.

  1094. But there's a surprise.

  1095. Look at what happens

  1096. in verse 28.

  1097. But Paul cried out

  1098. with a loud voice,

  1099. Do not harm yourself,

1100. for we are all here.

  1101. And the jailer called

  1102. for lights

  1103. and rushed in

  1104. and trembling with fear,

  1105. he fell down

  1106. before Paul and Silas.

1107. Then he brought them out

  1108. and said,

  1109. Here's this famous question.

  1110. Many, many people

1111. are familiar with this text,

1112. even if they can't remember

  1113. where it was.

  1114. Sirs,

  1115. what must I do

  1116. to be saved?

  1117. And they said,

1118. Believe in the Lord Jesus

1119. and you will be saved,

  1120. you and your household.

  1121. And then they spoke

1122. the word of the Lord

  1123. to the jailer

1124. and to all who were

  1125. in his house

  1126. and he took them,

  1127. that is the jailer,

1128. that same hour of the night

  1129. he washed their wounds

1130. and he was baptized at once,

1131. he and all his family.

  1132. Then he brought them

  1133. into his house

1134. and set food before them

  1135. and he rejoiced along

  1136. with his entire household

1137. that he had believed in God.

1138. So here you can see

  1139. that the picture is

  1140. of the true God

  1141. is very big.

  1142. He's big enough

1143. that he can shake the planet,

  1144. he can unlock shackles,

  1145. he can remove demons,

1146. and he can open your heart

1147. to believe in the Lord Jesus

  1148. and be saved.

  1149. Now here's the question.

  1150. And some of you

  1151. might be wondering,

  1152. George,

1153. why did you begin by saying

  1154. what you said

1155. at the beginning of the sermon?

1156. Some of you can't remember,

  1157. that's fine.

  1158. If God is able

  1159. to shake the planet

  1160. and open hearts

  1161. and cast out demons,

  1162. why did he allow

  1163. Paul and Silas

  1164. to be beaten?

1165. Why did he allow it?

1166. Well, part of the answer

  1167. is this.

  1168. Paul,

1169. it's not all about you.

1170. It's not all about you.

1171. If you could put up

  1172. point 1c,

  1173. that would be helpful.

1174. the Lord who loves you

  1175. reassures you

  1176. that you are not

  1177. the center,

  1178. that he is.

1179. It's not all about you,

  1180. it's about him.

1181. You know one of the things

  1182. that's really cool?

  1183. This probably happened

  1184. in the year 49.

  1185. We're in the year 2024.

  1186. There's still Christians

  1187. in Philippi.

  1188. There's still Christians

  1189. in Philippi.

  1190. almost 2,000 years later.

  1191. You see,

  1192. one of the problems

1193. with it's not all about you,

  1194. it's on one level

  1195. we all know intuitively

1196. that that's very important advice.

  1197. Like in a family,

1198. I need to know as a dad

1199. that it's not all about me.

  1200. You know,

1201. the pastor of the church,

  1202. I have to know

1203. that it's not all about me.

1204. Like some of the other

  1205. organizations I'm involved with,

1206. it's not all about me.

1207. I need to hear that.

1208. I need to remember that.

1209. And I need to know

  1210. how to understand.

  1211. But you see,

  1212. the problem is

  1213. is that other people

1214. say that to me sometimes

  1215. in such a way

  1216. that they're implying

  1217. that it's really

  1218. all about them.

  1219. And if there's no,

1220. like if all of that,

1221. if we all do that,

  1222. then there's like,

  1223. we need something

  1224. that holds everything together.

1225. We still need a center.

  1226. We need something,

  1227. someone,

  1228. that it is about.

  1229. And the thing

  1230. which is so wonderful

  1231. about the gospel

1232. is that when Paul says,

  1233. when the Lord says

1234. in a sense to Paul,

  1235. Paul,

1236. it's not all about you.

  1237. Well,

1238. who's saying that to him?

  1239. You know,

1240. it's not as if God is just,

  1241. you know,

1242. one of the problems we have

1243. is like in many religions,

1244. like God is so big

  1245. and a God who's so big

1246. is just going to crush us.

1247. And for all of the religions

  1248. of the world,

  1249. when they say

  1250. it's all about you,

  1251. that's something

  1252. which isn't actually

  1253. very hopeful

  1254. or reassuring.

  1255. The ancient gods

  1256. created human beings

  1257. to be their slaves.

  1258. Allah is so,

  1259. in a sense,

  1260. it's almost as a little bit

1261. as if Allah is like

  1262. the Matrix

  1263. in the Matrix movies

  1264. because Allah doesn't actually

  1265. give the message

  1266. directly to Muhammad.

  1267. Did you know that?

  1268. Because he can't have

  1269. that direct contact

  1270. with a human being.

  1271. Allah gives the message

  1272. to an angel

  1273. who gives the message

  1274. to Muhammad.

  1275. And in a sense,

  1276. you know,

  1277. when you have

1278. the religions of the East

1279. and even when you have

1280. in the religions of the East,

  1281. it's a different type

1282. of the bigness of God,

1283. but the bigness of God

  1284. is something

1285. that's going to swallow you,

1286. that you become part of

  1287. and you lose you.

  1288. So even in all

  1289. of those religions,

  1290. when they say

1291. it's not all about you,

  1292. it's something

  1293. which ends up

  1294. crushing you

  1295. or denying you

  1296. or denigrating you.

  1297. But the same God

  1298. who is able

  1299. to shake the planets

  1300. comes as Emmanuel,

  1301. God with us

  1302. in the midst

  1303. of our mess,

  1304. the midst

  1305. of the muck

  1306. of your life,

  1307. the midst

  1308. of your wounds,

  1309. the midst

  1310. of your weakness,

  1311. and in love

  1312. he dies for you.

  1313. I mean,

  1314. one of the hopes

  1315. for my marriage

  1316. with Louise

  1317. is that I understand

1318. it's not all about me,

  1319. that Louise understands

1320. it's not all about her,

  1321. but we do know

  1322. that it's all about

  1323. the Lord.

1324. Our hope as a church

  1325. is that it's not

  1326. all about me,

  1327. it's not all about

  1328. the council,

  1329. it's not all about

  1330. the Sunday school teachers,

1331. but it's all about Christ.

  1332. There's a type

  1333. of both relativizing

1334. and an arms around us.

1335. Just a couple of truths

  1336. that follow from this,

  1337. just very briefly,

  1338. that the last one

  1339. is the big point,

  1340. right?

  1341. If the big point

1342. is this is revealing God,

  1343. the true God

  1344. shakes the planet

  1345. and locks shackles,

  1346. removes demons,

  1347. and opens your heart

1348. to believe in the Lord

  1349. Jesus Christ,

1350. but if you could put up

  1351. one D,

  1352. that would be helpful.

  1353. Since God is big

  1354. and you are small,

  1355. your weakness

  1356. is not a bug,

  1357. but a feature.

  1358. You're all familiar

  1359. with the idea

  1360. of the bug,

  1361. right?

  1362. It's,

  1363. you know,

  1364. we have a couple

  1365. of computer-type

  1366. people here,

  1367. they'll fix the bugs,

  1368. things that aren't

  1369. supposed to be there.

  1370. But me being weak,

1371. and a lot of my anxiety

  1372. comes about either,

  1373. because I'm wrestling

  1374. with wanting to be

  1375. the center,

  1376. but I'm not,

  1377. and I'm wrestling

  1378. with others who think

  1379. they're the center,

  1380. and I know they're not,

  1381. and I'm wrestling

  1382. with that,

  1383. and I also wrestle

  1384. with weakness.

  1385. But it's really helpful

1386. to know that God is big

  1387. and I am small,

  1388. and that's not a bug

1389. that I have to fix.

  1390. There's a brilliant text.

1391. Paul says that it's something

1392. that Jesus spoke to him,

1393. so he says it's something

1394. that came right from Jesus.

  1395. It's 2 Corinthians,

1396. I don't have it on the screen,

  1397. 2 Corinthians 12, 9.

  1398. Jesus says to Paul,

1399. this is a little bit later,

1400. My grace is sufficient for you,

1401. for my power is made perfect

  1402. in weakness.

1403. So here's the final point.

1404. Paul, you know, by the way,

1405. Paul's not going to be articulate

  1406. with the Philippian jailer

1407. after having teeth missing potentially.

  1408. He's not already a good speaker

  1409. to begin with.

  1410. He's hungry.

  1411. He hasn't slept.

  1412. He's been beaten.

  1413. He has open wounds,

1414. but he still shares the gospel

1415. about Jesus to this other guy.

1416. It's all in his weakness.

  1417. Here's the final point.

1418. If you could put it up,

  1419. one E.

  1420. And by the way,

1421. those of you who are familiar

  1422. with the book,

1423. I think by Larry Ellison,

  1424. I've tweaked his title.

  1425. I've made it Christian.

  1426. In Christ,

1427. you have all the weakness you need

1428. for God to work through you.

  1429. I can't forgive,

  1430. I'm too weak.

  1431. In Christ,

1432. you have all the weakness

  1433. you need for God

  1434. to work through you.

  1435. I can't tell other people

  1436. about Jesus.

1437. My life is a mess.

  1438. In Christ,

1439. you have all the weakness

  1440. you need

1441. for God to work through you.

  1442. I'm terrible at praying,

1443. and I'm not a very good Christian.

  1444. In Christ,

1445. you have all the weakness

  1446. you need

1447. for God to work through you.

  1448. I'm weak and poor,

  1449. I don't have any money

1450. to give to the work of the Lord.

  1451. I can't be generous,

  1452. I have to wait

  1453. until I have money.

  1454. No,

  1455. in Christ,

1456. you have all the weakness

  1457. you need

1458. for God to work through you.

  1459. Because he is big.

  1460. Let's stand

  1461. and bow our heads

  1462. in prayer.

  1463. Father,

  1464. you know how

1465. a lot of our life,

  1466. even as Christians,

  1467. is all about trying

  1468. to get stronger

  1469. and stronger

  1470. and better

  1471. and better

  1472. and shiny

  1473. and shinier

  1474. and more cleaned up

  1475. and more cleaned up

  1476. so that eventually

  1477. you'll pay some notice

  1478. to us

1479. or that we can do

  1480. good things.

  1481. And you know,

  1482. Father,

  1483. how both the world,

  1484. the flesh,

  1485. and the devil

  1486. beats us up

  1487. about our weaknesses

  1488. and our smallness.

  1489. And so,

  1490. Father,

  1491. it's very freeing

  1492. to hear

  1493. in the context

  1494. of salvation,

  1495. the context

  1496. of Jesus being Emmanuel,

  1497. Emmanuel who dies

  1498. for us,

1499. Emmanuel who on one hand

  1500. can shake the planet,

1501. but on the other hand

  1502. will walk amongst us

1503. and die on the cross

  1504. for us,

  1505. that our weakness

  1506. is not something

  1507. that is a bug,

  1508. but a feature

  1509. of who we are

  1510. as human beings.

  1511. I am small

  1512. and I am weak,

  1513. and that is not

  1514. a bug to fix,

  1515. but a feature

  1516. of who I am.

  1517. And it is,

  1518. Father,

  1519. very humbling

  1520. to know

1521. that you are the one

  1522. who opens hearts,

  1523. you are the one

  1524. who shakes the planets,

  1525. you are the one

  1526. who did everything

1527. that had to be done

  1528. to save.

  1529. You are the one

  1530. whose son became poor

1531. that we might become rich,

  1532. that Father,

  1533. that every single

  1534. one of us here,

1535. and not as an excuse

  1536. not to repent

  1537. of our sins,

1538. and not as an excuse

  1539. not to learn

  1540. and to grow,

  1541. but that we already

  1542. have,

1543. every one of us here,

  1544. all the weakness

  1545. that you need

  1546. for us to work

  1547. through you,

  1548. through us,

  1549. for your glory.

  1550. So we ask,

  1551. Father,

1552. that you make the gospel

  1553. more and more real

  1554. to us,

  1555. and help us,

  1556. Father,

  1557. to see our smallness

  1558. and our weakness,

1559. and that we are not

  1560. the center

  1561. in light of this

  1562. profound act

  1563. that Jesus has done

  1564. to save us,

  1565. and to make us

  1566. your children forever.

1567. And we ask these things

1568. in the name of Jesus,

1569. your Son and our Savior,

1570. and all God's people said,

  1571. Amen.

  1572. Amen.
