  1. The scripture reading today comes from Luke chapter 1 verses 57 to 80.

    Luke 1:57–80

  2. Please follow along on your bulletin on the screen or in your own Bible.

  3. Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth and she bore a son and her neighbors and relatives

  4. heard that the Lord has shown great mercy to her and they rejoiced with her. And on the eighth day

  5. they came to circumcise the child and they would have called him Zechariah after his father

  6. but his mother answered no he shall be called John and they said to her none of your relatives

  7. is called by this name and they made signs to his father inquiring what he wanted him to be called

  8. and he asked for a writing tablet and wrote his name is John and they all wondered and immediately

  9. his mouth was open and his tongue loosed and he spoke blessing God and fear came on all their

  10. neighbors and all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea and all

  11. who heard them lay them up in their hearts saying what then will this child be for the hand of the

  12. Lord was with him and his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied saying

  13. blessed be the Lord God of Israel for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of

  14. salvation for us in the house of his servant David as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of

  15. old that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us to show the mercy

  16. promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant the oath that he swore to our father Abraham

  17. to grant us that we being delivered from the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear

  18. in holiness and righteousness before him all our days and you child will be called the prophet of the

  19. most high for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways to give knowledge of salvation to his people

  20. in the forgiveness of their sins because of the tender mercy of our God whereby the sunrise shall

  21. visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death to guide our

  22. feet into the way of peace and the child grew and became strong in spirit and he was in the wilderness

  23. until the day of his public appearance to Israel this is the word of God

  24. good morning everyone that was pretty good

  25. if you don't know me my name is Oscar can you hear me okay is it clear I'm one of the leaders here at

  26. watermark let me actually join me in praying for us as we receive God's word today

  27. father we humbly come before you we want to want our hearts to be ready to and be prepared to receive

  28. your word today God thank you for your word which is powerful and is alive and dynamic and works

  29. into the inner workings of our hearts we don't want to just come away from here with some interesting

  30. advice or some uplifting talk and just forget about it tomorrow God we want to be changed and transformed

  31. the liking of Jesus to to know him and love him more and to be like him help me God as I articulate

  32. this message today help me to speak clearly and I pray God that my heart would be just as

  33. in love with Christ as all of us as we receive your word today in Jesus name we pray amen

  34. sorry guys

  35. that okay Chris thanks for your help

  36. what does it mean to be a man or woman of your word do we really mean it when we make a promise

  37. we'll say hey let's have lunch tomorrow meet you at 12 o'clock 12 sharp but the next day 11 45 we

  38. rush out the door the MTR is late we miss the bus and we get there late we commit to go into a

  39. community group on Friday night but when something better comes around we we go to that we skip CG

  40. when we meet a friend that we haven't seen in a while we bump into them we'll say hey it's great

  41. to see you let's catch up I'll whatsapp you we meet up for lunch or coffee but then life gets busy we

  42. forget and we move on by the way I've done all these things myself many times what does it mean to keep a

  43. promise

  44. well today as we celebrate the last Sunday of this season of Advent we're going to look into this

  45. passage concerning the birth of John the Baptist the cousin of Jesus and inside this passage is this

  46. beautiful song or prophecy by John's father Zechariah the song is often called the Benedictus which means

  47. blessed it means blessed in Latin after the first word of this song blessed be the Lord God of Israel

  48. similar to Mary's song from last week the Magnificat which means magnifies the Benedictus is a song of praise

  49. and blessing to God it's a song that exudes thanksgiving to God because God has indeed honored his promises

  50. to his people Israel because God isn't like us we struggle to keep our promises but the sovereign God of the Bible

  51. always has always and always will keep his promises it's intrinsic to his very nature God always keeps his promises

  52. so in this month of Advent as we have been preparing ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas

  53. we've been looking at the first book of the first chapter of the book of Luke

  54. first we saw the angel Gabriel he visited

  55. Zechariah to tell him that his wife Elizabeth would give birth to a son

  56. Gabriel tells Zechariah that his son John would prepare people for the coming of their Savior

  57. Zechariah's response was perhaps

  58. unsurprising he struggles to believe

  59. Gabriel after all his wife Elizabeth was barren for many years and both

  60. he and Elizabeth were past the typical age of childbearing

  61. and as a result Zechariah was unable to speak he was struck mute

  62. for not believing that God had the power

  63. to give him and Elizabeth a son

  64. then Gabriel visits Mary

  65. tells her that she would also become pregnant

  66. Mary the virgin would become pregnant but she would carry

  67. the Messiah

  68. Jesus Christ the foretold Savior of the world

  69. and Mary responds with great reverence and surrender

  70. and finally last week we looked at Mary's

  71. visit to her cousin Elizabeth who was also

  72. pregnant carrying John the Baptist

  73. in her womb and we saw Mary's joy

  74. as she burst into song that beautiful song the Magnificat

  75. my soul magnifies the Lord

  76. and my spirit rejoices in God

  77. my Savior

  78. and in today's passage which Iris so beautifully read

  79. Elizabeth has just given birth

  80. eight days into the birth of their son John

  81. it was time to circumcise the baby in line with Jewish tradition

  82. and so family and neighbors they gather around

  83. expecting the excited parents to name their baby boy

  84. after his father Zechariah

  85. that would have been expected I guess

  86. honor the family's line

  87. honor the father's line by naming the firstborn son

  88. after the father

  89. but Elizabeth and Zechariah knew their son would be set apart

  90. remember the angel Gabriel said that John must never drink alcohol

  91. but instead would be filled with something different

  92. the Holy Spirit

  93. and so Elizabeth says

  94. no no no

  95. not Zechariah

  96. his name is John

  97. of course the neighbors don't believe her

  98. and so they go to the man

  99. and they say

  100. hey Zechariah what do you think

  101. of course he was still mute

  102. he grabs a writing tablet

  103. and he writes also

  104. his name is John

  105. John means God is gracious

  106. the birth of John

  107. would signal a new paradigm

  108. in the history of the world

  109. this era of grace

  110. that we all live in

  111. no longer would man

  112. only hear from God

  113. through prophets

  114. no longer would man need

  115. a priest

  116. to sacrifice animals

  117. to atone for our sins

  118. because of the birth

  119. of Jesus

  120. at Christmas

  121. you and I

  122. amazingly

  123. can have a personal

  124. intimate relationship

  125. with our creator

  126. God

  127. and through the cross

  128. of Christ

  129. we can be perfect

  130. before God himself

  131. and after nine months

  132. of waiting

  133. after nine months

  134. of not speaking

  135. imagine all the pent up things

  136. that Zechariah wanted

  137. to say

  138. reflecting on his

  139. visit with the angel

  140. Gabriel

  141. contemplating the

  142. implications

  143. of his son's

  144. birth

  145. Zechariah's tongue

  146. is finally loose

  147. and what does he say

  148. I know what I would have said

  149. first of all

  150. I would have said

  151. finally I can talk

  152. thank you

  153. I can finally speak

  154. oh that was so difficult

  155. so many things

  156. I wanted to say

  157. I would have been

  158. self-focused

  159. or maybe we would have

  160. expected Zechariah

  161. to say

  162. thank you God

  163. for the birth of my son

  164. what a gift

  165. what a blessing

  166. it is

  167. to have a child

  168. is it not

  169. but Zechariah's

  170. first words

  171. are not about himself

  172. nor even about

  173. his son John

  174. Zechariah says

  175. blessed be the Lord

  176. God of Israel

  177. for he has visited

  178. and redeemed

  179. his people

  180. Zechariah blesses God

  181. not for the birth

  182. of his son John

  183. but for fulfilling

  184. the promises

  185. that he made

  186. to Zechariah's forefathers

  187. to the people of Israel

  188. many many many years ago

  189. blessed be the Lord

  190. God of Israel

  191. the Benedictus

  192. let's consider

  193. these two parts

  194. of the Benedictus

  195. our savior is coming

  196. and preparing

  197. the way

  198. now in the Benedictus

  199. Zechariah speaks

  200. of two Old Testament

  201. covenants

  202. they were about

  203. to be fulfilled

  204. in the birth

  205. of Jesus

  206. he refers to these

  207. covenants

  208. in a few ways

  209. or a few times

  210. in the Benedictus

  211. verse 70

  212. as he spoke

  213. by the mouth

  214. of his holy prophets

  215. from of old

  216. verse 72

  217. to remember

  218. his holy covenant

  219. verse 73

  220. the oath

  221. that he swore

  222. to our father Abraham

  223. these covenants

  224. weren't just

  225. made a few years

  226. before the birth

  227. of Jesus

  228. these were not

  229. spur of the moment

  230. decisions

  231. that God made

  232. when I struggled

  233. to think about

  234. what I want to give

  235. my kids for dinner

  236. at the last minute

  237. I'll order pizza

  238. on the Deliveroo

  239. God doesn't operate

  240. that way

  241. God doesn't make

  242. decisions like we do

  243. these covenants

  244. were hundreds

  245. and thousands

  246. of years

  247. in the making

  248. and what is a covenant?

  249. well one way

  250. to think about a covenant

  251. is that it's a relationship

  252. between two parties

  253. that is one half legal

  254. and one half love

  255. a covenant

  256. is one half legal

  257. but it isn't just

  258. simply a business

  259. contract

  260. between two partners

  261. that is devoid

  262. of any love

  263. or intimacy

  264. a covenant

  265. is also

  266. one half love

  267. but it isn't

  268. like any relationship

  269. that can just be

  270. broken

  271. with no legal

  272. consequences

  273. the late Tim Keller

  274. said it like this

  275. a covenant

  276. is a relationship

  277. that is more loving

  278. and intimate

  279. than a merely legal

  280. relationship

  281. but more binding

  282. enduring

  283. and accountable

  284. than a merely

  285. personal relationship

  286. it's a stunning blend

  287. of law and love

  288. marriage is an example

  289. of a covenant

  290. husband and wife

  291. unite in love

  292. and under the law

  293. but of course

  294. in our day and age

  295. unfortunately

  296. divorce is

  297. quite common

  298. that this example

  299. of marriage

  300. doesn't fully capture

  301. the magnitude

  302. of the biblical covenants

  303. between God

  304. and his people

  305. and so

  306. what are these

  307. covenants

  308. that Zachariah

  309. so joyfully

  310. sings about

  311. that were about

  312. to be fulfilled

  313. in the birth

  314. of Jesus

  315. well the first

  316. is this so-called

  317. Davidic covenant

  318. let's go to

  319. verse 68

  320. the very first verse

  321. of the Benedictus

  322. blessed be the

  323. Lord God of Israel

  324. for he has visited

  325. and redeemed

  326. his people

  327. and has raised up

  328. a horn of salvation

  329. for us

  330. in the house

  331. of his servant

  332. David

  333. 1,000 years

  334. that's a long time

  335. 1,000 years

  336. before Zachariah

  337. was singing

  338. this Benedictus

  339. God entered

  340. into a covenant

  341. relationship

  342. with King David

  343. and in that covenant

  344. God promised David

  345. that one of his sons

  346. would be king

  347. would serve as king

  348. on his throne

  349. not just for one

  350. or two generations

  351. more

  352. but for all time

  353. for eternity

  354. and Zachariah

  355. being a priest

  356. knowing the scriptures

  357. filled with the Holy Spirit

  358. he invokes his prayer

  359. of blessing

  360. and praise

  361. of King David

  362. that King David

  363. made a thousand years

  364. before

  365. a blessed be the Lord

  366. God of Israel

  367. was the exact

  368. proclamation

  369. made by King David

  370. in the book

  371. of first kings

  372. David said this

  373. as he joyfully

  374. handed over

  375. the throne

  376. to his son Solomon

  377. as God

  378. had promised

  379. it was a tense time

  380. in the house of David

  381. David was getting old

  382. he was

  383. he was getting weak

  384. and many of his sons

  385. were jostling

  386. for the power

  387. of his throne

  388. but David held on

  389. to the promises

  390. that God made him

  391. back then

  392. Psalm 132

  393. says

  394. the Lord swore

  395. to David

  396. a sure oath

  397. from which

  398. he will not turn back

  399. one of the sons

  400. of your body

  401. I was set

  402. on your throne

  403. 2 Samuel 7-16

  404. God tells David

  405. your house

  406. and your kingdom

  407. shall be made sure

  408. forever before me

  409. and I will establish

  410. your covenant

  411. forever

  412. also

  413. in Psalm 132

  414. in verse 17

  415. God declares

  416. that there I

  417. God

  418. will make a horn

  419. sprout

  420. for David

  421. and a thousand years later

  422. fast forward

  423. back to Zechariah

  424. Zechariah sees

  425. that God

  426. was about

  427. to fulfill

  428. this promise

  429. to raise up

  430. this horn

  431. of salvation

  432. from the house

  433. of David

  434. this image

  435. of a horn

  436. is like the horn

  437. of a buffalo

  438. or an ox

  439. think about

  440. a buffalo

  441. lifting up

  442. his horns

  443. tossing them about

  444. in a display

  445. of strength

  446. and power

  447. the Messiah

  448. was about to come

  449. in strength

  450. and power

  451. and Zechariah

  452. sang the Benedictus

  453. with his closest

  454. friends

  455. and his family

  456. around him

  457. holding his

  458. eight day old

  459. baby

  460. John

  461. he had this vision

  462. that God

  463. was right on the cusp

  464. of fulfilling

  465. his covenant

  466. with David

  467. in the birth

  468. of Jesus

  469. for God

  470. always keeps

  471. his promises

  472. God always

  473. honors

  474. his covenants

  475. the Savior

  476. is coming

  477. and the second

  478. covenant

  479. that Zechariah

  480. references

  481. was between

  482. God and Abraham

  483. this so called

  484. Abrahamic covenant

  485. verse 72

  486. we read

  487. to show mercy

  488. promised to our fathers

  489. and to remember

  490. his holy covenant

  491. the oath

  492. he swore

  493. to our father Abraham

  494. to grant us

  495. that we

  496. being delivered

  497. from our enemies

  498. might serve him

  499. without fear

  500. rewinding

  501. even

  502. further back

  503. from King David

  504. David was a thousand years

  505. Abraham was 1700 years

  506. before Zechariah

  507. in Genesis

  508. God

  509. in his sovereignty

  510. chose Abraham

  511. to be the father

  512. of Israel

  513. and as part of

  514. appointing Abraham

  515. to this crucial role

  516. God entered into

  517. a covenant with Abraham

  518. which covered

  519. a number of aspects

  520. I'll go over them

  521. quickly

  522. the verses are on the screen

  523. here

  524. I'm not going to read them out

  525. but you can reference them

  526. as I explain

  527. first

  528. that God would grant Abraham

  529. and Abraham's descendants

  530. their own land

  531. the land of Canaan

  532. forever

  533. and second

  534. that Abraham's descendants

  535. would be as the stars

  536. of heaven

  537. and as the sand

  538. on the seashore

  539. that the world over

  540. would be blessed

  541. through them

  542. but the overarching

  543. covering

  544. of this covenant promise

  545. was that God said

  546. to Abraham

  547. Abraham

  548. I will be your God

  549. and you will be

  550. my people

  551. there was a relationship

  552. there

  553. an intimate

  554. loving relationship

  555. I will protect you

  556. I will cherish you

  557. I will care for you

  558. I will watch over you

  559. I will build you up

  560. and strengthen you

  561. you are my set apart people

  562. because of my love

  563. for you

  564. and to show Abraham

  565. that he would stand

  566. by his word

  567. to prove to Abraham

  568. the magnitude

  569. of this promise

  570. and to confirm

  571. to Abraham

  572. that he would indeed

  573. fulfill this covenant

  574. the God of the universe

  575. swore an oath

  576. on himself

  577. since there was no one else

  578. greater to swear by

  579. God swore an oath

  580. on himself

  581. kind of a weird thing

  582. to think about

  583. isn't swearing an oath

  584. like an earthly thing

  585. that people do in court

  586. maybe

  587. or maybe when really

  588. really really want to promise

  589. something

  590. will swear

  591. on someone's grave

  592. it's a weird thing

  593. to think about

  594. isn't it

  595. for God to do

  596. but the God

  597. who created the world

  598. God created the mountains

  599. the sky

  600. the sea

  601. and the stars

  602. he came down

  603. to the level

  604. of a man

  605. to help Abraham

  606. understand

  607. Abraham

  608. this mere mortal

  609. to help him understand

  610. hey

  611. you can trust me

  612. my love for you

  613. for your people

  614. will cause me

  615. to enter

  616. into this covenant

  617. relationship with you

  618. driven by my love

  619. leave it to me

  620. I'll take care of it

  621. all you have to do

  622. trust me

  623. and obey me

  624. and this speaks

  625. to the nature

  626. of God

  627. we sang some of these

  628. we sang some of it today

  629. in these songs

  630. that God isn't far off

  631. living in some king's palace

  632. he is with us

  633. he understands us

  634. he's not far removed

  635. from day to day grind

  636. of what we go through

  637. every single day

  638. only communicating with us

  639. through middle men

  640. because of Christmas

  641. God was born

  642. into the world

  643. to become one of us

  644. to know us

  645. and for us

  646. to be able to know him

  647. and in the benedictus

  648. Zacharias sings

  649. that God

  650. indeed

  651. remembered his holy covenant

  652. that he swore to Abraham

  653. that this horn of salvation

  654. this Messiah

  655. would come

  656. to save

  657. Israel

  658. and what does Israel

  659. need saving from?

  660. verse 71

  661. that we should be saved

  662. from our enemies

  663. from the hand

  664. of all who hate us

  665. for a thousand years

  666. since King David

  667. up until the birth

  668. of Jesus

  669. the people of Israel

  670. had been attacked

  671. persecuted

  672. exiled

  673. from their homeland

  674. by the Assyrians

  675. the Babylonians

  676. the Persians

  677. the Greeks

  678. and at the time

  679. of Zacharias

  680. singing this benedictus

  681. the Roman Empire

  682. controlled Israel

  683. and many in Israel

  684. knowing the Davidic

  685. and Abrahamic covenants

  686. were waiting

  687. with bated breath

  688. for the Savior

  689. to come

  690. with an army behind him

  691. with swords

  692. and chariots

  693. and spears

  694. to free Israel

  695. once and for all

  696. from the neighboring enemies

  697. but a neighboring enemy

  698. wasn't Israel's greatest

  699. but an enemy nation

  700. wasn't Israel's greatest enemy

  701. sin

  702. was Israel's greatest enemy

  703. Israel's constant sin

  704. was the reason

  705. was the reason

  706. why it faces

  707. constant military oppression

  708. and for us

  709. our stressful jobs

  710. our money problems

  711. these are real concerns

  712. I don't want to diminish them

  713. these things

  714. that we are facing

  715. our kids getting into schools

  716. some of the things

  717. that I am thinking about

  718. even our health

  719. none of these

  720. are our greatest problem

  721. and none of these

  722. are actually

  723. our greatest enemy

  724. our greatest enemy

  725. is a sin

  726. that resides

  727. right here

  728. in my heart

  729. and in yours

  730. as well

  731. and maybe you're a Christian

  732. and you know this

  733. but you are struggling

  734. and actually

  735. that sin

  736. that enemy

  737. is winning the battle

  738. you know

  739. that that porn habit

  740. you've entertained

  741. has led to addiction

  742. and will corrupt

  743. the intimacy

  744. of marriage

  745. or maybe you know

  746. that deep down

  747. your security

  748. is found

  749. in your net worth

  750. in your bank account

  751. in your stocks

  752. and bonds

  753. that you hold

  754. in your real estate

  755. and money

  756. has gripped your heart

  757. and you find it difficult

  758. to give money back to God

  759. or maybe

  760. if you're truly honest

  761. with yourself

  762. Jesus is not

  763. your first love

  764. you say he is

  765. you sing it on Sunday mornings

  766. you talk about it

  767. in your CG

  768. but actually

  769. he's not

  770. something else

  771. is your first love

  772. maybe it's your job

  773. and your title

  774. the promotion

  775. you're seeking

  776. maybe it's your

  777. significant other

  778. or maybe it's a desire

  779. to have a significant other

  780. but hey

  781. let's not give up

  782. let's keep fighting

  783. that good fight

  784. of sin

  785. knowing that one day

  786. when the Lord returns again

  787. when Jesus returns

  788. all who trust him

  789. will be fully free

  790. of sin

  791. because the antidote

  792. to sin

  793. has come

  794. in the birth

  795. of Jesus

  796. this is the message

  797. of Christmas

  798. our Savior Christ

  799. was born into the world

  800. to save us

  801. from our sin

  802. and this morning

  803. if you're not

  804. a Christian here

  805. today

  806. this is the gospel

  807. we're all sinful

  808. every one of us

  809. me

  810. the person

  811. trying to give

  812. the sermon today

  813. I'm sinful

  814. our wonderful music leaders

  815. who just sang beautifully

  816. and

  817. and facilitated

  818. a worship of God

  819. through music

  820. they're sinful

  821. all the leaders

  822. of this church

  823. are sinful

  824. the elders

  825. no one is perfect

  826. but God so loved

  827. the world

  828. that he made

  829. Abraham and David

  830. this promise

  831. that I will

  832. I will bring a Savior

  833. to come into the world

  834. to save you

  835. from your sin

  836. and God so loved

  837. the world

  838. that that promised

  839. Savior Jesus

  840. came to fulfill

  841. that promise

  842. to die in our place

  843. to defeat this enemy

  844. of sin

  845. so that we may receive

  846. freedom

  847. and eternal life

  848. and to do that

  849. which all of us

  850. were born to do

  851. to know our creator

  852. to be in communion

  853. with him

  854. to know and love him

  855. always

  856. as Hannah said to us

  857. a couple weeks ago

  858. during her baptism testimony

  859. to come home

  860. all God asks of us

  861. is to acknowledge

  862. that we're sinful

  863. and in need of the

  864. saving grace of Jesus

  865. that's it

  866. and so that's you

  867. this morning

  868. and you want to live

  869. in freedom

  870. let's chat after the service

  871. and for those of us

  872. here this morning

  873. who are followers

  874. of Jesus

  875. because God

  876. does indeed

  877. keep his promises

  878. we can look back

  879. at how he has fulfilled

  880. his promises

  881. to give us a confidence

  882. and faith

  883. to look ahead

  884. at this time of year

  885. many of us

  886. are probably doing

  887. a little recap

  888. of 2024

  889. how did we do this year

  890. how much money

  891. did I make this year

  892. what did I accomplish

  893. this year

  894. how did I accomplish

  895. this year

  896. compared to previous years

  897. I guess those are

  898. okay things to do

  899. I often do that myself

  900. but it's better

  901. to look back

  902. at the promises

  903. of God

  904. in our lives

  905. yes

  906. God has blessed

  907. many of us

  908. with our families

  909. our health

  910. our friendships

  911. but above all

  912. God has blessed us

  913. with Jesus

  914. his son

  915. our savior

  916. so this Christmas

  917. let's look back

  918. at the birth

  919. of the world's

  920. promised Messiah

  921. and be thankful

  922. and let the hope

  923. of Jesus

  924. give us joy

  925. and purpose

  926. in the year ahead

  927. as we face

  928. the joys

  929. of this year

  930. and the challenges

  931. of this year ahead

  932. and so

  933. as Zacharias

  934. sings of Jesus

  935. the savior

  936. has come

  937. to fulfill

  938. the promises

  939. of God

  940. how is Israel

  941. to respond

  942. to serve him

  943. without fear

  944. in holiness

  945. and righteousness

  946. before him

  947. all our days

  948. verse 74

  949. now on the one hand

  950. verse 74

  951. speaks about

  952. eternity in heaven

  953. in a way

  954. the promised Messiah

  955. Jesus

  956. coming to save us

  957. from our sins

  958. the fulfillment

  959. of that

  960. is that one day

  961. if we truly

  962. love and trust Christ

  963. we will be with him

  964. forever in heaven

  965. and yes we will serve him

  966. in heaven

  967. in holiness

  968. in righteousness

  969. perfection

  970. for all time

  971. but it's also a call

  972. for us to respond

  973. to the gift

  974. of Jesus

  975. today

  976. right now

  977. and Zacharias

  978. son John the Baptist

  979. shows us the blueprint

  980. he shows us how

  981. to respond

  982. two thirds

  983. into the Benedictus

  984. Zacharias

  985. finally speaks

  986. into the life

  987. of his newborn son

  988. verse 76

  989. and you child

  990. will be called

  991. the prophet

  992. of the most high

  993. for you will go

  994. before the Lord

  995. to prepare his ways

  996. to give knowledge

  997. of salvation

  998. to his people

  999. in the forgiveness

  1000. of their sins

  1001. from birth

  1002. actually before birth

  1003. even in his womb

  1004. John was set apart

  1005. even in Elizabeth's womb

  1006. John was set apart

  1007. called by God

  1008. to go before Jesus

  1009. to prepare the people

  1010. of Israel

  1011. for the coming

  1012. of Jesus

  1013. what does it mean

  1014. to prepare the way

  1015. I used to work

  1016. for a large

  1017. US financial institution

  1018. and one time

  1019. the CEO

  1020. from New York

  1021. was

  1022. he planned a visit

  1023. to Hong Kong

  1024. and before he came

  1025. he asked his people

  1026. to

  1027. to liaise

  1028. with us

  1029. on the ground

  1030. here in Hong Kong

  1031. to prepare the way

1032. for the CEO to come

  1033. to prepare

  1034. the agenda

  1035. of the meetings

  1036. when he would come

  1037. that type of stuff

  1038. the CEO's people

  1039. their job

  1040. was to

  1041. get the CEO ready

  1042. and get us ready

  1043. to prepare the way

  1044. for the CEO

1045. to come to Hong Kong

  1046. to meet us

  1047. but the focus

  1048. was never on

  1049. the CEO's people

  1050. the focus

  1051. was on the CEO

  1052. or it's like

  1053. when a president

  1054. visits a foreign country

  1055. before the visit

  1056. the president's

  1057. officials

  1058. would liaise

  1059. with the host

  1060. country's officials

  1061. and set an agenda

  1062. when the media

  1063. can come visit

  1064. when they

  1065. shake hands together

  1066. what would be discussed

  1067. the agreements

  1068. between two countries

  1069. the job

  1070. of the president's

  1071. officials

  1072. is to

  1073. is to maximize

  1074. the president's visit

  1075. to provide focus

  1076. to the president's visit

  1077. but the focus

  1078. was never

  1079. on the president's people

  1080. it's always

  1081. on the president

  1082. and John

  1083. was to prepare

  1084. the way for Jesus

  1085. John was opening act

  1086. John was the appetizer

  1087. warming up the stomach

  1088. for the main course

  1089. John himself

1090. even referred to his role

1091. as that of the best man

  1092. at a wedding

  1093. his purpose

  1094. was to magnify

  1095. the greatness

  1096. of Jesus

  1097. the groom

  1098. John's job

  1099. was to say

  1100. hey Israel

  1101. wake up

  1102. I know it's been

  1103. 400 years

  1104. God hasn't spoken

  1105. to us

  1106. it seems that we're

  1107. kind of

  1108. in the dumps

  1109. Romans still

  1110. oppress us

  1111. but hey

  1112. tide is turning

  1113. the sun will rise

  1114. again

  1115. so get ready

  1116. pull up your socks

  1117. the most important

  1118. time of your life

  1119. is upon us

  1120. focus

  1121. the foretold

  1122. savior

  1123. is finally here

1124. and for those of us

  1125. who are followers

  1126. of Jesus

  1127. John's calling

  1128. is also

  1129. our calling

  1130. as well

  1131. we're called

  1132. to be

  1133. little

  1134. John's

  1135. not

  1136. Johnny

  1137. Lynn

  1138. or

  1139. John

  1140. Jr

  1141. that's a

  1142. different

  1143. little

  1144. John

  1145. but like

  1146. John the

  1147. Baptist

  1148. who prepared

  1149. the way

  1150. for the

  1151. first coming

  1152. of Jesus

  1153. our calling

  1154. is to prepare

  1155. the way

  1156. for the

  1157. second coming

  1158. of Jesus

  1159. and like

  1160. in John's

  1161. time

  1162. in our

  1163. day and age

  1164. people are

  1165. confused

  1166. people are

  1167. distracted

  1168. by the things

  1169. of the world

  1170. people are

  1171. putting their

  1172. energy

  1173. into

  1174. work

  1175. and money

  1176. and pleasure

  1177. and all

  1178. these things

  1179. but they're

  1180. grasping at

  1181. straws

  1182. and they don't

  1183. know Jesus

  1184. of course

  1185. as a father

  1186. of three

  1187. a busy guy

  1188. I understand

  1189. we are busy

  1190. one of the biggest

  1191. challenges in Hong Kong

  1192. is that

  1193. our works

  1194. are just so

  1195. overwhelming

  1196. and the city

  1197. is just so

  1198. fast paced

  1199. and we have so

  1200. many worries

  1201. I get it

  1202. I'm not going to

  1203. throw on you

  1204. guys

  1205. on us

  1206. a billion

  1207. different

  1208. to-do lists

  1209. or approaches

  1210. or techniques

  1211. in sharing

  1212. the gospel

  1213. but I want

  1214. to just

  1215. ask us

  1216. this week

  1217. to spend

  1218. time reflecting

  1219. on two things

  1220. the first

  1221. is this

  1222. what is our

  1223. own conviction

  1224. that the gospel

  1225. is good news

  1226. and so desperately

  1227. needed

  1228. in our own

  1229. hearts

  1230. and lives

  1231. especially

  1232. at Christmas

  1233. how much

  1234. of our joy

  1235. at Christmas

  1236. if we really

  1237. think about it

  1238. is coming

  1239. from the thought

  1240. that

  1241. no need

  1242. to go to work

  1243. I'm going to

  1244. fly off soon

  1245. to some hot

  1246. or cold place

  1247. have a great

  1248. lot of fun

  1249. that is what

  1250. I'm looking forward

  1251. to

  1252. that is really

  1253. why I love

  1254. Christmas

  1255. and by the way

  1256. again I am going

  1257. on holiday too

  1258. so I'm not judging

  1259. anyone here

  1260. but how much

  1261. of our joy

  1262. at Christmas

  1263. is when we

  1264. reflect

  1265. when we're by

  1266. ourselves

  1267. or with our

  1268. community group

  1269. or with our

  1270. family of God

  1271. we're reflecting

  1272. of how amazing

  1273. the love of Christ

1274. he came into the world

  1275. to love us

1276. to die for our sins

  1277. so one

  1278. reflecting on the gospel

  1279. in our own hearts

  1280. and second

  1281. what is our own

  1282. intentionality

  1283. in sharing the gospel

  1284. I was so encouraged

  1285. Hannah where are you

  1286. Hannah

  1287. that was such an

  1288. encouraging testimony

  1289. thank you so much

  1290. for sharing

  1291. Simon Sherman

  1292. incredible example

  1293. for all of us

  1294. what is our own

  1295. intentionality

  1296. in sharing the gospel

  1297. now

  1298. sometimes

  1299. it's simply

  1300. helpful

  1301. to sit down

  1302. and think

  1303. why has God

  1304. put certain people

  1305. in my life

  1306. the friends

  1307. you grew up with

  1308. your fellow colleagues

  1309. at the trenches

  1310. at work

  1311. that you see

  1312. ten hours a day

  1313. your neighbors

  1314. in your building

  1315. the buddies

  1316. you see each week

  1317. when you hang out

  1318. or play sports

  1319. with them

  1320. why has God

1321. put them in your life

  1322. probably a reason

  1323. for that

  1324. if they don't

  1325. know him

  1326. and name them

  1327. as you pray

  1328. for God's spirit

  1329. to move their hearts

  1330. to know him

  1331. but don't just pray

  1332. for them

  1333. build an authentic

  1334. relationship with them

  1335. get to know them

  1336. well

  1337. understand them

  1338. pray for God

  1339. to move you

  1340. to share the gospel

  1341. with them

  1342. and when he does

1343. prompt you to do so

1344. be ready to do it

  1345. I've often wondered

  1346. why did Jesus

  1347. need John

1348. John as we have seen

  1349. was a great man

1350. but yet next to Jesus

  1351. John was just

  1352. a mere mortal

  1353. John didn't die

  1354. for our sins

  1355. and yet Jesus

  1356. gave John

  1357. this great privilege

  1358. and honor

  1359. of serving him

  1360. and Jesus gives us

  1361. that great privilege

  1362. and honor

  1363. as well

  1364. today

  1365. to serve him

1366. but time is of the essence

  1367. Jesus came once

  1368. to fulfill

  1369. the promise

1370. to die on the cross

  1371. but when he comes

  1372. again

  1373. and no one knows

  1374. when that will be

1375. it will be the last

  1376. and final time

  1377. that Christ comes

  1378. and so Zechariah

  1379. ends the benedictus

  1380. showing us exactly

  1381. what glory looks like

  1382. when our Lord Jesus

  1383. returns that second time

  1384. verse 78

  1385. 79

  1386. the sunrise

  1387. shall visit us

  1388. from on high

  1389. to give light

  1390. to those

  1391. who sit in darkness

  1392. and in the shadow

  1393. of death

  1394. to guide our feet

  1395. into the way

  1396. of peace

  1397. left to our own

  1398. devices

  1399. all of us

  1400. sit in darkness

  1401. all of us

  1402. are held down

  1403. and gripped

  1404. by the depravity

  1405. of our own hearts

  1406. and tossed around

  1407. by the winds

  1408. of the world

  1409. but there is hope

  1410. we can be saved

1411. but there is only one hope

  1412. and only one savior

1413. and his name is Jesus

  1414. and when Jesus returns

  1415. again

1416. all will be set right

  1417. in our hearts

  1418. and in the world

1419. and for all of us here

  1420. who have

1421. who love and trust Christ

  1422. who have persevered

  1423. into the very end

  1424. the light of Christ

  1425. will shine on us

  1426. forever

  1427. for eternity

  1428. and we'll finally experience

  1429. the peace

  1430. of God

  1431. the shalom

  1432. isn't that

  1433. what we're all desiring

  1434. freedom

  1435. from all the anxieties

  1436. and all the worries

  1437. all the busyness

  1438. the restlessness

  1439. the future uncertainties

1440. that we don't know of

1441. finally when Christ returns again

  1442. we receive

  1443. that peace

  1444. and shalom

  1445. the rest

  1446. that peace

  1447. is Christ

  1448. with us

  1449. face to face

  1450. the church

  1451. this week

  1452. let's be a church

  1453. that goes out

  1454. into the world

  1455. this week

  1456. full of the gospel

  1457. in our hearts

  1458. preparing the way

  1459. for Jesus

  1460. proclaiming

  1461. that the great

  1462. promised savior

  1463. of God

  1464. our Lord Jesus

  1465. has come

  1466. let's pray together

  1467. thank you

  1468. Father God

  1469. thank you

1470. blessed be the Lord God

  1471. of Israel

  1472. thank you God

  1473. for Jesus Christ

  1474. our Lord

  1475. we acknowledge

  1476. that Jesus

  1477. could have

  1478. stayed in heaven

  1479. forever

  1480. he was

  1481. very comfortable

  1482. more than comfortable

  1483. there

  1484. and yet

  1485. he was born

  1486. into this world

  1487. this broken world

  1488. he was born

  1489. into this world

1490. in such a humble fashion

  1491. in a lowly manger

  1492. in a backwards town

  1493. of Bethlehem

1494. that no one knew about

  1495. because of his love

  1496. for us

  1497. his great love

  1498. thank you

  1499. that you're not

  1500. a whimsical

  1501. God

  1502. who makes

  1503. spirit of the moment

  1504. decisions

  1505. and promises

  1506. that you

  1507. make your promises

  1508. and you keep

  1509. your promises

  1510. and help us

  1511. this week God

  1512. as we go about

  1513. spending time

  1514. with family

  1515. celebrating Christmas

  1516. seeing some friends

  1517. catching up

  1518. opening presents

  1519. perhaps

  1520. flying off maybe

  1521. help us to remember

  1522. and reflect

  1523. on this great promise

  1524. you have

  1525. fulfilled

1526. in the birth of Christ

1527. in the cross of Christ

  1528. the saving grace

  1529. of Christ

1530. and maybe be a church God

  1531. maybe have boldness

  1532. and courage

  1533. to do what

  1534. Hannah and Simon Sherman

1535. and that CG has done

1536. to go out into Hong Kong

  1537. to share our faith

  1538. not worrying about

1539. what the outcome is like

  1540. not thinking that

1541. it all rests on our shoulders

  1542. because you're sovereign

  1543. and you're in control

1544. and you just call us

  1545. to obey you

  1546. to love you

1547. help us to do that

1548. out of our love for you

  1549. out of our desire

  1550. to serve you

  1551. because you're a good God

  1552. in Jesus name
