  1. Our scripture reading tonight is one passage from the Old Testament and one passage from the New Testament.

  2. ! We're in a series on Hebrews 11.

  3. !

  4. God tested Abraham and said to him,

  5. Abraham!

  6. And he said,

  7. Here I am.

  8. He said,

  9. Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, of which I shall tell you.

  10. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and his son Isaac.

  11. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose, and he went to the place of which God had told him.

  12. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes, and he saw the place from afar.

  13. Then Abraham said to his young men,

  14. Stay here with the donkey.

  15. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

  16. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son.

  17. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife.

  18. So they went, both of them together.

  19. And Isaac said to his father Abraham,

  20. My father!

  21. And he said, Here I am, my son.

  22. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

  23. Abraham said,

  24. God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  25. So they went, both of them, together.

  26. Then, when they came to the place of which God had told him,

  27. Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac, his son,

  28. and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  29. Then Abraham reached out his hand, and he took the knife to slaughter his son.

  30. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said,

  31. Abraham, Abraham.

  32. And he said, Here I am.

  33. And he said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.

  34. For now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.

  35. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked.

  36. And behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.

  37. And Abraham went, and he took the ram, and he offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

  38. So Abraham called the name of that place, the Lord will provide.

  39. As it is said to this day, On the mountain of the Lord it shall be provided.

  40. And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said,

  41. By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son.

  42. I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of the heaven

  43. and as the sand that is on the seashore.

  44. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies.

  45. And in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.

  46. So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba.

  47. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.

  48. And from Hebrews 11, verses 17 to 19.

    Hebrews 11:17–19

  49. By faith, Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son,

  50. of whom it was said, Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  51. He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead,

  52. from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.

  53. By faith, Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau.

  54. By faith, Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff.

  55. This is God's holy word.

  56. I feel like Corey's nearly preached this passage in his prayer,

  57. but we'll endeavor to talk a little bit more for 20 minutes or so about Hebrews 11, verses 17 to 19.

    Hebrews 11:17–19

  58. We've been in Hebrews for a few weeks.

  59. And in this letter, the writer is writing to his Hebrew audience,

  60. and he's saying that although times are hard, don't turn back.

  61. Don't go back to the way things were before you knew Jesus,

  62. because Jesus is better than anything else.

  63. And in chapter 11, the one that we've been looking at specifically for the last few weeks,

  64. the writer is saying, Don't turn back, but look back.

  65. Look back at these great men and women of faith and how they were blessed by God,

  66. not because of the strength of their performance, their moral character, or their sheer determination,

  67. but because of their faith.

  68. Abraham gets quite a lot of coverage in this chapter.

  69. So we started talking about Abraham back in verse 8.

  70. That's unsurprising because Abraham in the Bible is called the man of faith.

  71. Well, tonight we're going to look at one of the tests.

  72. Abraham went through several tests, different challenges in his life.

  73. Today we're going to look at, I think, the most significant of those.

  74. And despite going through these tests, Abraham remained faithful to God.

  75. Before we dive into it, I just want to say,

  76. if this is the first time that you've read this passage,

  77. these words are quite difficult to read.

  78. If you've come to church for the first time and you've read about Isaac being put onto a pile of wood,

  79. these are difficult things for us to read.

  80. But as we consider it together,

  81. I think we'll see that what we actually have here is an example of the extraordinary faithfulness of God.

  82. A faithfulness that taught Abraham that he could rely on God

  83. with even the most precious things in his life.

  84. And it shows us that our God goes to extraordinary lengths to save his people.

  85. And it shows us why we can put our faith in God,

  86. holding nothing back, not even our most precious possessions,

  87. and come before him certain that he will fulfill the promises he's made to his people.

  88. I've got three points.

  89. The unthinkable test, the unbreakable promise, the incomparable provision.

  90. So first, the unthinkable test.

  91. So the test that we've read, that we've referred to,

  92. Hebrews 11 verse 17,

    Hebrews 11:17

  93. says that when Abraham was tested.

  94. And in the chapter that Corey read for us, chapter 22 of Genesis,

  95. it tells us this is a test that stands above all the other tests

  96. because it says God tested Abraham.

  97. That's a pretty big clue.

  98. But also when we consider the nature of the test,

  99. God spoke to Abraham and he said,

  100. Here I am.

  101. And God said,

  102. Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love.

  103. And notice here the preciseness of the language.

  104. God says,

  105. Take your son, your only son, Isaac, the one that you love.

  106. There's no ambiguity to who God's referring to, what God's commanding.

  107. Father Abraham had many sons.

  108. We all know that from the song.

  109. But here he calls Isaac Abraham's only son.

  110. Well, we know already from Genesis,

  111. if we'd been reading through,

  112. that he's got a half-brother called Ishmael.

  113. So Isaac wasn't literally Abraham's only son.

  114. But Isaac was the one through whom God promised

  115. he would deliver the blessings that were coming to Abraham

  116. and through Isaac to the whole world.

  117. So we can think of Isaac that only maybe as a unique.

  118. Isaac was a unique son.

  119. And Abraham takes Isaac, two of his servants,

  120. along with the woods and a couple of servants,

  121. and they head off for Mount Moriah.

  122. And it takes them three days to get there.

  123. And I can't help but put myself in Abraham's sandals

  124. in three days thinking about what's going to take place.

  125. Because God tells Abraham to offer Isaac as a burnt offering.

  126. And I don't want to be overly detailed and gory,

  127. but that would involve killing the sacrifice with a knife,

  128. letting out its blood, and then burning it.

  129. This is truly horrific, what he's walking towards.

  130. You've maybe seen children's storybook stories of Isaac and Abraham.

  131. And Isaac's a little toddler on his back.

  132. But Isaac's old enough to carry the wood up the mountain.

  133. So he's at least a teenager.

  134. And Isaac knows something of the plan of what's going to happen.

  135. Because he says, you've got the fire, I've got the wood.

  136. Where's the animal for the burnt offering?

  137. And Abraham says to Isaac,

  138. God will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.

  139. So they go up the mountain until they arrive at the place.

  140. And Abraham builds the altar.

  141. And he ties up Isaac.

  142. And he places Isaac onto the woods.

  143. Isaac's been strong enough to carry this wood up the mountain.

  144. He's not a helpless child.

  145. Abraham, when Isaac was born, was 100 years old.

  146. So it's not as if Isaac couldn't fight him off.

  147. Or at least run away.

  148. But he doesn't.

  149. Isaac willingly allows himself to be put onto the sacrificial altar.

  150. Isaac's been raised to know the God that his father knows.

  151. Isaac goes willingly onto the wood.

  152. And then we arrive at the climactic moment.

  153. And Abraham's hand is stretching for the knife.

  154. He's going to kill his son.

  155. And a voice comes from heaven and says,

  156. Abraham, Abraham, don't harm the boy or do anything to him.

  157. Because I know that you fear God.

  158. Seeing you've not withheld your special, unique son.

  159. Your pride and joy.

  160. Your most precious thing from me.

  161. This is hard to hear.

  162. What could have, in our minds at least, have happened.

  163. We've got lots of children and grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

  164. And friends.

  165. And little lives that we love.

  166. And just to be clear,

  167. God is not going to command any of us to do anything like that.

  168. The culture that Abraham lived in was pagan.

  169. He lived in a pagan land among pagan people before God called him.

  170. Sacrificing children to lowercase gods was not an uncommon practice.

  171. That's not saying it's okay.

  172. That it's okay then and it's not now.

  173. Not at all.

  174. It was wrong then.

  175. But it existed.

  176. And Abraham knew about it.

  177. Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah, though, was a very different situation.

  178. Because the real God.

  179. The big G God.

  180. Abraham's God.

  181. The Israelite God.

  182. Our God.

  183. He intervenes to stop child sacrifice.

  184. And this is a massive departure from the peoples around them.

  185. And later, the people of ancient Israel.

  186. They were defined.

  187. They were different among their neighbors.

  188. Because they were not allowed to practice human sacrifice.

  189. In fact, when they mixed with people who did.

  190. And they defiled their own way of life that God had set for them.

  191. They were condemned for that.

  192. God strictly forbids murder.

  193. And in the New Testament, Jesus takes that murder commandment and extends it to being angry.

  194. God loves children.

  195. And wants them to come in to a saving relationship with him.

  196. God loves them.

  197. He's never going to ask you to do something like this in a literal sense.

  198. But there is a sense in which what Abraham was asked to do does apply to us, I think.

  199. Because what Abraham was asked to do was give over the thing that he loved most to God.

  200. God, the son of his old age.

  201. And the son through whom Abraham's blessings and the blessing of the whole world was going to come.

  202. Abraham being able to hand over his one and only son.

  203. It has to make us stop and think.

  204. What are the things that we do, that we love tonight, that we refuse to give up for God?

  205. What possessions do you have?

  206. Or I think what's more likely is what habits, what ways of living do we know that God doesn't want for us?

  207. And yet we cling to them.

  208. We hold on to them.

  209. We let them become between ourselves and our God.

  210. And these don't have to be inherently sinful things.

  211. Putting anything before God is idolatry.

  212. And often our idols are good things that we make our first things.

  213. So hard work's good.

  214. But refusing to fight against overworking at the sacrifice of other things that we know God wants us to do.

  215. Because we need to prove our worth is not good.

  216. Maybe you refuse to Sabbath, to take rest.

  217. Because you think that getting a first in your degree is the thing that is going to prove your worth.

  218. Or maybe you love your children so much that you allow them to dictate their own screen time, home time, bed time, Bible time.

  219. Because you're afraid that they're going to resent you for making them do otherwise.

  220. What are the things that you love tonight that you refuse to stop for God?

  221. Because we're in a chapter that's all about living by faith.

  222. And Tim Keller says, you've never known true faith until you've given up something that you love.

  223. Okay, point number two.

  224. The unbreakable promise.

  225. So my old job was the kind of job where you'd spend weeks thinking about how you're going to express an idea in like three words.

  226. And I know that sounds kind of worthless to lots of people in here.

  227. But it means that I can't help but think about how things are expressed.

  228. Especially in writing.

  229. And to me, what we have here is such a straightforward, matter-of-fact account.

  230. That there's no discussion of the circumstances, the setting, the mood.

  231. And that feels surprising considering the task that Moses is describing here.

  232. And Abraham's actions are kind of like that too.

  233. God tells Abraham to go.

  234. And Abraham immediately gets up the next morning and heads off.

  235. And it takes him three days, as I said, to get where they're going by donkey.

  236. Lots of time to back out.

  237. But the narrative doesn't even give us a hint that he's considering it.

  238. How can it be that Abraham's experience is recorded here as almost serene despite what he was facing?

  239. Well, we know in our relatively comfortable lives that we're full of anxiety and stress and doubt and fear.

  240. God's made promises to Abraham.

  241. Promises to bless him with land and offspring.

  242. And that through his seed, all the nations of the earth are going to be blessed.

  243. And when Abraham asked God for assurance that he could trust those promises,

  244. God didn't say, trust me.

  245. He did.

  246. But he didn't just say, trust me.

  247. He entered into a covenant with Abraham.

  248. So Presbyterian seminary students love talking about covenants,

  249. but maybe everyone else doesn't love it as much.

  250. So I'm going to be brief.

  251. But this covenant is a solemn agreement between God and Abraham.

  252. You can read about it in Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  253. When we were children and we didn't want somebody to tell our mums what we were doing,

  254. we would say, cross your heart and hope to die.

  255. And it's kind of like that.

  256. In the ancient Near East, two parties, a powerful king and a less powerful king,

  257. they would swear on terms of an agreement.

  258. And they would also agree on the sanctions,

  259. the consequences that would happen if he broke that agreement.

  260. So it's a visceral, a really real sign of the solemnity of the agreement that God makes with Abraham.

  261. God gets Abraham to gather some animals and to cut them up

  262. and put them in two parts, two halves.

  263. And what's interesting about the covenant that God makes with Abraham,

  264. as opposed to other covenants that God makes in the Old Testament,

  265. is that the covenant God makes with Abraham,

  266. it's only God who takes on the consequences.

  267. Abraham's in a deep sleep.

  268. God is the all-powerful king here.

  269. And yet, it's God, a representation of God that passes between the animals.

  270. God's saying to Abraham,

  271. may what's happened to these animals happen to me if I break this covenant.

  272. If I don't deliver these promises to you, Abraham,

  273. I'm going to be torn in two, just like these animals.

  274. It's only God that says, cross my heart and hope to die.

  275. If I don't do what I'm going to say.

  276. Now, we know God can't be torn in two.

  277. And Abraham knew that God can't be torn in two.

  278. So does that mean that God's promise was worthless?

  279. Well, no.

  280. In fact, it's the exact opposite.

  281. God's saying to Abraham,

  282. just like it's absolutely impossible for me to be torn in two,

  283. it's impossible for me to break the promises I've made to you.

  284. You see, while this passage might be hard for us to read,

  285. there was never any possibility of God not fulfilling

  286. the promises that he'd made to bless Abraham through Isaac.

  287. And Abraham was convinced

  288. that he and Isaac were both going home again.

  289. Look what he said to the young men.

  290. Genesis chapter 22, verse 5.

    Genesis 22:5

  291. He said to his servants,

  292. stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there.

  293. We'll worship and then we will come back to you.

  294. So these guys are not Abraham's peers

  295. that he has to kind of like pretend

  296. that everything's going to be okay

  297. and nothing sinister is going to happen.

  298. These are his servants.

  299. They'll do what he says.

  300. And yet he tells them,

  301. Isaac and I are going

  302. and Isaac and I are coming back.

  303. Even as he reached for the knife,

  304. Abraham knew that this wasn't the end of Isaac.

  305. Even if, as Hebrews 11, 19 tells us,

  306. God was going to raise Isaac from the dead.

  307. There's already been a fair bit of life and death

  308. talk language in the story of Abraham.

  309. In verse 12 of Hebrews 11,

  310. the writer calls Abraham as good as dead.

  311. And that refers to the fact

  312. that he was nearly 100 years old,

  313. way past the age of having children

  314. when God came to him and said,

  315. your wife's going to have a baby.

  316. And Sarah was 90.

  317. She was well past her time of fertility.

  318. There was no life left in Sarah's womb.

  319. So when Isaac was born,

  320. Abraham knew that God had already performed a miracle.

  321. He brought life from a place of death.

  322. And that's why when God told Abraham

  323. to sacrifice Isaac,

  324. Abraham could get up the next morning

  325. and go and do it,

  326. even although it contradicted

  327. what God had promised him.

  328. Maybe we could say

  329. that Abraham could do what God told him

  330. because it contradicted

  331. what God had promised him.

  332. He could contemplate sacrificing Isaac

  333. because he knew that that wasn't the end,

  334. because he knew

  335. that God would not break his promises.

  336. Living in Edinburgh,

  337. the 21st century,

  338. these things are hard for us

  339. to get our heads right.

  340. You know, for a long time,

  341. our society in general

  342. has believed that the material

  343. is all there is.

  344. But Abraham lived in a culture

  345. when that wasn't the case.

  346. For Abraham,

  347. there was this life

  348. and there was an afterlife.

  349. And Abraham believed that God

  350. was the God of both.

  351. Abraham's so utterly convinced

  352. that if it came to it,

  353. God was going to raise Isaac from the dead

  354. because he was utterly convinced

  355. that God would not fail

  356. in delivering the promises,

  357. the covenant promises

  358. that he'd made.

  359. Puritan Thomas Watson tells us

  360. that there's an important lesson

  361. for us here as well.

  362. He says,

  363. God's to be trusted

  364. when his providences

  365. run contrary to his promises.

  366. When his providences

  367. run contrary to his promises.

  368. So when our faith is in Christ,

  369. we can trust that God

  370. is doing what is ultimately best for us,

  371. even when it doesn't feel

  372. anything like that at the time to us.

  373. Christian, the circumstances

  374. of your life at this moment

  375. are not indicative

  376. of your eternal life

  377. with God in glory.

  378. I wonder if you feel today

  379. like God's taking his eye off you.

  380. Maybe you're walking with the Lord

  381. and you feel like,

  382. this is not how my circumstances

  383. should be.

  384. Maybe you're up against the wall

  385. financially.

  386. Maybe you're dealing with a diagnosis

  387. that you were not expecting.

  388. Maybe the relationship

  389. with your family

  390. has hit an all-time low.

  391. Maybe you've stepped out in faith

  392. and you feel like things

  393. are just getting harder

  394. and harder.

  395. What Abraham's teaching us

  396. to keep trusting the Lord.

  397. Don't compromise

  398. on listening

  399. to what he is saying

  400. and obeying

  401. the things

  402. that he says.

  403. Even when you feel like

  404. the way he's shaping your life

  405. is not what you expected.

  406. Scottish minister Sinclair Ferguson,

  407. he wrote that Abraham

  408. had faith

  409. that looks away from self

  410. and rests on the faithfulness

  411. of God.

  412. Your circumstances,

  413. no matter how difficult,

  414. are not a reflection

  415. on your faith,

  416. as though the more faith you have,

  417. the fewer struggles

  418. you should have.

  419. The Old Testament book of Job

  420. makes that very clear for us.

  421. And in the New Testament as well,

  422. the Apostle Paul,

  423. he says that

  424. his faith in Christ

  425. resulted in tremendous

  426. trials and difficulties.

  427. Yet Paul knew God's promises

  428. and he knew

  429. that the promises

  430. that God made to his people

  431. were unbreakable.

  432. In Romans he writes,

  433. for I'm sure that

  434. neither death,

  435. nor life,

  436. nor angels,

  437. nor rulers,

  438. nor things present,

  439. nor things to come,

  440. nor powers,

  441. nor heights,

  442. nor depth,

  443. nor anything else

  444. in all creation

  445. will be able to separate us

  446. from the love of God

  447. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  448. We can have faith

  449. in the promises

  450. God makes us

  451. because nothing can separate

  452. God's people

  453. from God's love.

  454. And it's worth

  455. reminding ourselves as well

  456. that this is not

  457. a blind faith.

  458. We're not being asked

  459. to blindly follow

  460. what God says.

  461. We're being asked

  462. to follow what God says,

  463. but not blindly.

  464. So Abraham

  465. could follow

  466. God's command

  467. because he'd seen

  468. God working

  469. throughout his life.

  470. He'd had evidence

  471. of God's faithfulness.

  472. When Abraham

  473. left the land

  474. of his fathers

  475. and he went out,

  476. he didn't know

  477. where he was going

  478. and yet God

  479. was gracious to him.

  480. When Abraham

  481. was with his nephew Lot

  482. and they were deciding

  483. which land

  484. to pick

  485. for their people,

  486. Abraham gave Lot

  487. first choice

  488. and Lot chose

  489. the good land

  490. and yet God

  491. blessed Abraham

  492. in the land

  493. that wasn't meant

  494. to be as good.

  495. And when Abraham

  496. pretended that Sarah,

  497. his wife,

  498. wasn't his wife

  499. to save his own skin,

  500. twice,

  501. God was gracious

  502. to him.

  503. R.C. Spurl said,

  504. faith isn't blind.

  505. Faith is trusting

  506. in what you have

  507. good reason

  508. to believe.

  509. Abraham believed God

  510. because,

  511. was faithful

  512. because Abraham

  513. had seen

  514. God's faithfulness.

  515. In what ways

  516. are we seeing

  517. God's faithfulness

  518. in our lives

  519. today?

  520. Have you failed

  521. to see God's faithfulness?

  522. If you're investigating

  523. Christianity

  524. and you've come

  525. here tonight,

  526. how did you even

  527. end up here?

  528. What was it

  529. that brought you here?

  530. Did you think

  531. it was pure coincidence?

  532. Or do you think

  533. something,

  534. someone,

  535. was coordinating

  536. events to bring you

  537. here so you would

  538. hear about Jesus?

  539. God doesn't need

  540. to speak to you

  541. audibly like he did

  542. to Abraham

  543. to show you

  544. that he's at work.

  545. God's orchestrating

  546. everything that happens

  547. at all times

  548. in the whole world

  549. and in your life.

  550. One way we see

  551. God at work

  552. every day

  553. is when we see

  554. people who were

  555. unbelievers

  556. that are now

  557. believers.

  558. How he changed

  559. people who

  560. once loved

  561. the things

  562. that God

  563. disapproves of

  564. and now long

  565. to listen to

  566. and obey

  567. the commands

  568. that God gives.

  569. And the church

  570. itself

  571. across the world

  572. for all the

  573. imperfections

  574. of its people

  575. is evidence

  576. that God

  577. keeps his promises.

  578. The Bible

  579. promises that

  580. the church

  581. is going to

  582. exist until

  583. Christ comes

  584. back.

  585. And from

  586. 12 disciples

  587. 2,000 years

  588. ago

  589. we've now got

  590. 2.26

  591. billion people

  592. who say

  593. that they

  594. follow the

  595. Lord.

  596. Our

  597. promise-keeping

  598. God

  599. keeps keeping

  600. his promises.

  601. Finally

  602. and briefly

  603. the

  604. incomparable

  605. provision.

  606. When God

  607. stopped

  608. Abraham

  609. from sacrificing

  610. Isaac

  611. it wasn't

  612. just an end

  613. to the

  614. sacrifice.

  615. It didn't

  616. just become

  617. abandoned.

  618. Abraham

  619. looked up

  620. and he saw

  621. ram caught

  622. in some

  623. bushes

  624. and Abraham

  625. sacrificed

  626. the ram

  627. in place

  628. of his

  629. son.

  630. God

  631. substituted

  632. one life

  633. for another.

  634. And this

  635. transforms

  636. this story

  637. of a test

  638. into a

  639. revelation

  640. of the

  641. gospel.

  642. The 18th

  643. century

  644. preacher

  645. and theologian

  646. Jonathan

  647. Edwards

  648. said,

  649. this command

  650. was a

  651. great trial

  652. of Abraham's

  653. obedience

  654. and faith

  655. and also

  656. a type

  657. of what

  658. God

  659. the Father

  660. was afterwards

  661. to do

  662. in his

  663. son.

  664. God

  665. provided

  666. a ram

  667. as a

  668. replacement

  669. for Isaac.

  670. But Abraham

  671. told Isaac

  672. in verse

  673. 8 that

  674. God

  675. will

  676. provide

  677. the

  678. lamb.

  679. Abraham

  680. sacrificed

  681. a ram

  682. but a

  683. lamb was

  684. coming.

  685. The first

  686. readers of

  687. this story,

  688. the Israelites

  689. who wandered

  690. in the desert

  691. with Moses,

  692. they experienced

  693. the saving

  694. power through

  695. a lamb.

  696. When they

  697. were in

  698. Egypt and

  699. they were

  700. leaving,

  701. they were

  702. in slavery,

  703. God sent

  704. plagues on

  705. Egypt and

  706. he said

  707. to the

  708. Israelite

  709. people,

  710. kill a

  711. lamb and

  712. daub the

  713. blood on

  714. the frame

  715. of your

  716. door and

  717. I will

  718. pass over

  719. your houses.

  720. Those people

  721. knew that

  722. God,

  723. through a

  724. lamb,

  725. saved the

  726. life of

  727. their

  728. firstborn.

  729. And in

  730. subsequent

  731. generations,

  732. they would

  733. bring lamb

  734. to the

  735. temple,

  736. not far,

  737. the temple

  738. was built

  739. not far

  740. from where

  741. this whole

  742. incident took

  743. place.

  744. And those

  745. lambs were

  746. killed as

  747. payment for

  748. the sins

  749. of the

  750. people.

  751. But all

  752. those

  753. sacrifices,

  754. all those

  755. lambs,

  756. were mere

  757. pictures of

  758. the one who

  759. was going to

  760. be the

  761. ultimate

  762. lamb.

  763. Jesus,

  764. God's

  765. only

  766. unique

  767. son,

  768. who like

  769. Isaac,

  770. himself

  771. carried the

  772. wood up

  773. the hill

  774. where he

  775. was going

  776. to be

  777. sacrificed.

  778. Who like

  779. Isaac,

  780. went willingly

  781. to the

  782. altar to

  783. give his

  784. life.

  785. But unlike

  786. Isaac on

  787. Mount

  788. Moriah,

  789. there was

  790. no angelic

  791. voice calling

  792. halt on

  793. Mount

  794. Calvary.

  795. Jesus died

  796. for our

  797. sin.

  798. He was

  799. the substitute

  800. for us.

  801. There could

  802. be no

  803. substitute for

  804. the ultimate

  805. substitute.

  806. Jesus,

  807. the one that

  808. John the

  809. Baptist called

  810. the Lamb

  811. of God

  812. who takes

  813. away the

  814. sin of

  815. the world,

  816. died on

  817. that cross.

  818. And when

  819. he died,

  820. even his

  821. best friends

  822. were crestfallen.

  823. The dreams

  824. that they had

  825. that this was

  826. the promised

  827. Messiah,

  828. the long

  829. prophesied

  830. Savior,

  831. had been

  832. dashed in

  833. the most

  834. terrible way.

  835. And while the

  836. disciples didn't

  837. get it yet,

  838. generations

  839. before,

  840. Abraham knew

  841. that death

  842. wasn't the

  843. end.

  844. He had

  845. faith that

  846. death had

  847. no power

  848. to stop

  849. God.

  850. And he

  851. was right.

  852. On the

  853. third day,

  854. Jesus rose

  855. again,

  856. showing that

  857. God provided

  858. his son as

  859. a true

  860. and a

  861. complete

  862. atonement

  863. for our

  864. sin.

  865. He took

  866. on our

  867. sin.

  868. We,

  869. through faith,

  870. put on

  871. his

  872. righteousness.

  873. The lesson

  874. of the trial

  875. of Abraham

  876. is not,

  877. like Abraham,

  878. you can do

  879. anything you

  880. put your

  881. mind to.

  882. It's not,

  883. no matter how

  884. bad things you

  885. get,

  886. you can

  887. overcome.

  888. It's not,

  889. climb that

  890. mountain,

  891. claim that

  892. reward.

  893. The real

  894. lesson is

  895. Jehovah

  896. Jireh,

  897. the Lord

  898. will provide.

  899. God the

  900. Father

  901. provided

  902. dearly,

  903. expensively,

  904. for our

  905. forgiveness

  906. by bringing

  907. the metaphorical

  908. knife across

  909. the throat

  910. of his

  911. pure,

  912. innocent,

  913. only begotten

  914. son.

  915. Paul writes

  916. in Romans

  917. 8,

  918. God

  919. didn't

  920. spare

  921. his

  922. only

  923. son

  924. to

  925. fulfill

  926. the

  927. promises

  928. that he

  929. made to

  930. Abraham

  931. that through

  932. his

  933. seed

  934. the whole

  935. world

  936. would be

  937. blessed.

  938. God's

  939. love

  940. what could

  941. you

  942. possibly

  943. love

  944. that you

  945. let stop

  946. you

  947. coming

  948. wholly

  949. and

  950. completely

  951. to this

  952. God?

  953. Amen.

  954. Let's pray.

  955. Lord God,

  956. we thank you

  957. for your

  958. holy word.

  959. We thank you

  960. for the

  961. promises

  962. that it

  963. contains.

  964. we thank

  965. you that

  966. you do

  967. not call

  968. us to

  969. a blind

  970. faith,

  971. but to

  972. have faith

  973. in the

  974. things that

  975. we have

  976. faithfully

  977. recorded

  978. for us

  979. in the

  980. Bible,

  981. that our

  982. God did

  983. not spare

  984. his only

  985. son,

  986. but gave

  987. him up

  988. for us.

  989. Help us

  990. put to

  991. death in

  992. our own

  993. lives any

  994. hard-heartedness

  995. or habits

  996. that are

  997. keeping us

  998. from putting

  999. all our

  1000. faith in

  1001. your

  1002. promises.

  1003. We pray

  1004. in Jesus'

  1005. name.

  1006. Amen.
