  1. If you don't know me, if you're visiting, my name is Niels, one of the elders here.

  2. It's, yeah, welcoming you more formally.

  3. It's great to be with you.

  4. It's great to bring you God's Word.

  5. In a moment, in a moment, Cecilia is going to read.

  6. If you've been doing our Bible reading plan that started off, we started the year with

  7. Philippians.

  8. It's just nice to have this really encouraging New Testament book at the start of the year.

  9. It's a great letter, one of Paul's favorite churches.

  10. And so I thought, why don't I speak on that?

  11. So in a moment, I'll be speaking on Philippians 3, this wonderful chapter of Christian basics

  12. that will be good at the start of the year.

  13. But Cecilia is going to read for us in a moment.

  14. Let me first pray.

  15. Father, thank you that you are the God who speaks, the God who loves us, the God who comes into

  16. our life.

  17. Pray that you would speak to each one of us now as Cecilia reads.

  18. And we hear those words that you spoke back then, that you're still speaking now.

  19. And as I then try to explain it, speak to each of our hearts, no matter where we are at,

  20. no matter what this year has been like so far for us.

  21. Please speak to us, encourage us, and help us to press on with you.

  22. In Jesus' name.

  23. Amen.

  24. Today's scripture reading is Philippians chapter 3, verse 1 to chapter 4, verse 1.

    Philippians 3:1

  25. Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.

  26. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me, and is safe for you.

  27. Look out for the dogs.

  28. Look out for the evildoers.

  29. Look out for those who mutilate of the flesh.

  30. For we are the circumcision.

  31. We worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.

  32. Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also.

  33. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more.

  34. Circumcised on the eighth day of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews,

  35. as to the law, a Pharisee, as to Sil, a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law, blameless.

  36. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

  37. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

  38. For his sake, I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish.

  39. In order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,

  40. but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith,

  41. that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings because, like him in his death,

  42. that by any means possible, I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

  43. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own,

  44. because Christ Jesus had made me his own.

  45. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own,

  46. but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

  47. I press on towards the goals of the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  48. Let those of us who are mature think this way,

  49. and if in anything you think otherwise, God will review that also to you.

  50. Not only let us hold true to what we have attained.

  51. Brothers, join in imitating me,

  52. and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

  53. For many, of whom I have often told you, and now tell you even with tears,

  54. walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.

  55. Their end is destruction, their God is their belly,

  56. and glory is their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

  57. But our citizenship is in heaven,

  58. and from it we await a saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  59. who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body,

  60. by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

  61. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for,

  62. my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

  63. This is the word of God.

  64. Amen.

  65. Great. Thank you for reading, Cecilia.

  66. And so, yeah, there's a lot in this passage.

  67. We're not going to look at everyone, everything,

  68. but wonderful things here.

  69. Now, Christianity is, I think, it's the weirdest religion in the world, right?

  70. If you have spent time with people from other religions

  71. who are serious about their religion,

  72. you will notice how different it is.

  73. And what is the big difference?

  74. Well, it's grace, isn't it?

  75. The fact that it's not about what we do.

  76. It is about what Jesus has done.

  77. And most religions, you know,

  78. Islam has the five pillars of Islam that you need to do to get to heaven.

  79. Or in Buddhism, there's the eightfold path.

  80. And I don't know the number for Hinduism,

  81. but, you know, there's things that you need to do.

  82. And yet, as Christians,

  83. well, we believe it's all about what Jesus did, right?

  84. It's he lived a perfect life.

  85. And if we trust in him, we get that counted to us.

  86. And everything we've done wrong,

  87. Jesus died for it.

  88. We don't have to make up for it with good things, right?

  89. And so there's no laws to give.

  90. There's no pray this many times a day,

  91. not do this, do that,

  92. no offerings.

  93. And that's a wonderful thing.

  94. I mean, we see it here in this first half of this chapter, right?

  95. What is the,

  96. this is the Apostle Paul writing,

  97. and verse 9,

  98. this is what it's like to be a Christian.

  99. Verse 9,

  100. to be found in Christ,

  101. not having a righteousness of my own,

  102. that comes from the law,

  103. but that which comes through faith in Christ.

  104. The righteousness from God,

  105. that depends on faith.

  106. I'm right with God.

  107. I'm accepted by him,

  108. purely by faith in Jesus,

  109. by what he has done,

  110. and not by my own efforts in keeping the law.

  111. He's writing about people who,

  112. you know,

  113. Jewish people who said,

  114. no, no,

  115. you need to keep the law to be a Christian.

  116. And he says,

  117. well,

  118. I'm more Jewish than anyone.

  119. I'm more law keeping than anyone,

  120. but that's all rubbish.

  121. No,

  122. we need Christ.

  123. Only he can make us right with God.

  124. But that's a wonderful thing.

  125. I mean,

  126. and once Jesus has done that,

  127. it's great.

  128. If you're a Christian,

  129. I hope you know that,

  130. right?

  131. If you feel tempted,

  132. you know,

  133. to prove yourself,

  134. yeah,

  135. on Instagram,

  136. or at work,

  137. that you know,

  138. no,

  139. I'm already accepted fully by God.

  140. It's a wonderful thing.

  141. But then,

  142. how do people respond?

  143. When you say that,

  144. well,

  145. if I share this with religious people,

  146. that,

  147. you know,

  148. Jesus has done everything.

  149. You can go to heaven

  150. just by trusting him.

  151. They always say,

  152. but then,

  153. why should I be good?

  154. Why should I make any effort

  155. to pray,

  156. to be holy,

  157. right?

  158. You're already accepted.

  159. You're already righteous.

  160. You already got in.

  161. What's the point,

  162. right?

  163. You know,

  164. why do that?

  165. It's a good question.

  166. I mean,

  167. the New Testament

  168. asked that question,

  169. right?

  170. Famous chapter,

  171. Romans 6,

  172. shall we continue to sin?

  173. Because we are not under law,

  174. but under grace,

  175. right?

  176. It is a very good question.

  177. Maybe that's something you wonder.

  178. You're here as a visitor,

  179. or you're not a Christian,

  180. and that seems so strange,

  181. right?

  182. That you're already fully accepted.

  183. Why would you do anything?

  184. I mean,

  185. the logic makes a lot of sense.

  186. I mean,

  187. silly example.

  188. Back when I was at university,

  189. I studied electrical engineering,

  190. and there was a subject I had to do

  191. called electrical circuits.

  192. And anyway,

  193. there were four tests.

  194. Yeah.

  195. And I had to pass three out of four.

  196. So I passed the first three,

  197. and then what did I do?

  198. Well,

  199. I stopped going to lectures,

  200. right?

  201. And then for the exam,

  202. I just went in,

  203. and I wrote my student number

  204. and the date,

  205. and then when the exam started,

  206. I handed in my paper

  207. and went out.

  208. Why would I,

  209. right?

  210. I've already passed.

  211. That makes sense,

  212. right?

  213. I've got so much better things

  214. to do than this,

  215. right?

  216. Doing an exam,

  217. I've already passed.

  218. You can see the logic.

  219. Well,

  220. why isn't,

  221. how about Christianity then,

  222. right?

  223. If Jesus has already done everything,

  224. what should we do?

  225. So,

  226. as we start a new year,

  227. I thought that's a great thing

  228. to preach on

  229. at the start of 2025.

  230. And what does

  231. Paul say?

  232. Well,

  233. the thing is,

  234. we are not there yet.

  235. The thing I want to preach on

  236. is 3.12 to 4.1.

  237. And a few times he says,

  238. we are not there yet.

  239. Verse 12,

  240. not that I have already obtained this

  241. or am already perfect,

  242. but I press on

  243. to make it my own

  244. because Christ Jesus

  245. has made me his own.

  246. Brothers,

  247. I do not consider

  248. that I have made it my own,

  249. but one thing I do,

  250. forgetting what lies behind

  251. and straining forward

  252. to what lies ahead,

  253. I press on

  254. toward the goal

  255. for the prize

  256. of the upward call

  257. of God in Christ Jesus.

  258. You can hear it.

  259. I press on

  260. because I'm not there yet,

  261. right?

  262. I haven't obtained it yet.

  263. I'm not perfect yet.

  264. And it seems so contradictory,

  265. right?

  266. Aren't we perfect in Christ?

  267. Just when you trust in Jesus,

  268. you're perfect.

  269. Well,

  270. there's,

  271. the difference is between

  272. in status

  273. and in practice.

  274. Right?

  275. In status

  276. and in practice.

  277. Christ has given us

  278. a status.

  279. And we are right with God.

  280. We belong to him.

  281. Verse 20 talks about

  282. our citizenship

  283. is in heaven.

  284. Right?

  285. Citizenship talks about,

  286. you know,

  287. legal and rights

  288. and those kind of things,

  289. right?

  290. So,

  291. so legally,

  292. yeah,

  293. we belong to Christ.

  294. We,

  295. we're citizens

  296. of heaven.

  297. But Paul is thinking

  298. of practical reality.

  299. Right?

  300. He's thinking of

  301. knowing Christ

  302. and being like him.

  303. Of our thoughts

  304. and words

  305. and deeds.

  306. And the thing is,

  307. that hasn't changed yet.

  308. Right?

  309. Paul says,

  310. I'm not yet perfect.

  311. I'm not there yet.

  312. Right?

  313. Having a legal status

  314. doesn't change

  315. your life.

  316. We still have a lowly body,

  317. not yet a glorious body.

  318. We're not yet fully like Christ.

  319. I mean,

  320. a silly example,

  321. what makes a Hong Konger?

  322. You can talk about

  323. a legal status,

  324. right?

  325. And so,

  326. in that sense,

  327. I'm a Hong Konger.

  328. I've been here

  329. eight and a half years.

  330. I'm a permanent resident

  331. of Hong Kong.

  332. I'm a real Hong Konger.

  333. Except,

  334. I don't really look like

  335. a Hong Konger,

  336. right?

  337. When it's 20 degrees,

  338. I still wear shorts

  339. and t-shirts.

  340. I still don't know

  341. how to fill in

  342. the dim sum menu.

  343. You know,

  344. I want to buy lunch.

  345. I want to order,

  346. I want to say takeaway

  347. and they give me lemon tea.

  348. If you can work that out.

  349. Those red envelopes,

  350. for years,

  351. I thought they were called

  352. light cheese.

  353. Right?

  354. Yeah,

  355. red,

  356. named after the fruit.

  357. That's what I thought

  358. until someone corrected me.

  359. I'm not a Hong Konger,

  360. right?

  361. In status,

  362. yes.

  363. In practice,

  364. no.

  365. But,

  366. it's the same thing

  367. with Christ.

  368. Paul says,

  369. that's me.

  370. I have Christ.

  371. I have the ID card.

  372. Yes.

  373. But,

  374. in practice,

  375. I'm still earthly.

  376. In practice,

  377. I'm not yet who

  378. I want to be.

  379. I'm still not like Christ.

  380. But,

  381. I want to be.

  382. And,

  383. and God wants us to be,

  384. right?

  385. God doesn't want us

  386. to just give us

  387. a new legal status

  388. and then for the rest

  389. we stay the same

  390. old,

  391. sinful people.

  392. No.

  393. God wants us

  394. to be transformed.

  395. He wants to make us

  396. all we can be.

  397. He wants to make us

  398. like Jesus.

  399. Isn't that the most

  400. wonderful thing?

  401. And,

  402. it's not just that,

  403. you know,

  404. God wants it.

  405. Hopefully,

  406. we want it.

  407. Right?

  408. We don't want to be

  409. the people that we

  410. used to be.

  411. We,

  412. we want to be

  413. different.

  414. We want to be like Christ.

  415. We want to be

  416. more loving

  417. and more holy

  418. and more other-centered

  419. and more devoted.

  420. Right?

  421. We want to live for Christ

  422. like,

  423. anyway,

  424. like Paul does,

  425. but even more.

  426. Paul says,

  427. I want to do more.

  428. Right?

  429. But that's the thing.

  430. We should want it.

  431. Right?

  432. Hopefully,

  433. we want it.

  434. I mean,

  435. going back to

  436. electrical circuits,

  437. the problem is

  438. I just wasn't

  439. interested.

  440. Right?

  441. I wanted to do telecoms

  442. and this was just

  443. an obligatory,

  444. irrelevant subject to me,

  445. so I had no interest

  446. in it.

  447. If I really was

  448. passionate about

  449. electrical circuits,

  450. of course,

  451. I would go to the lectures

  452. and try to do well

  453. in the exam,

  454. even if I didn't need to

  455. because I was interested.

  456. So,

  457. the person who says,

  458. well,

  459. hey,

  460. if Jesus has done

  461. everything,

  462. I don't need to.

  463. That person doesn't

  464. want to be holy.

  465. They have no interest

  466. in knowing Jesus.

  467. They just,

  468. why should I?

  469. Well,

  470. they don't want to.

  471. But ideally,

  472. as Christians,

  473. yeah,

  474. the right thing is that

  475. we want to be different.

  476. We want to know Christ more.

  477. We want to pursue Him.

  478. We want to love Him more.

  479. Right?

  480. We want to be like Him.

  481. And that is

  482. the Christian life.

  483. Verse 15,

  484. Paul says,

  485. let those of us

  486. who are mature

  487. think this way.

  488. Yeah,

  489. we're not there yet.

  490. That is being

  491. a mature Christian

  492. is having this mindset.

  493. Which is kind of weird,

  494. right?

  495. Because you think,

  496. if I'm mature,

  497. I've arrived.

  498. And Paul says,

  499. well,

  500. mature means being immature.

  501. Mature means

  502. knowing that you

  503. have not arrived yet.

  504. Yeah?

  505. But that is

  506. what Paul wants.

  507. So,

  508. I don't know,

  509. how do we see ourselves?

  510. I hope we rejoice

  511. in our salvation.

  512. I hope we rejoice

  513. that we have Christ

  514. and we have His righteousness.

  515. Right?

  516. We are fully accepted

  517. and yet,

  518. as Christians,

  519. I hope we want to,

  520. we want more.

  521. Right?

  522. We want to know Christ more.

  523. We want to change.

  524. We want to be more loving.

  525. We want to be more patient.

  526. We want to

  527. please God more.

  528. We want to

  529. live a life

  530. that reflects Him more

  531. here in the world

  532. around us.

  533. Or do we want to stay

  534. the old sinner

  535. that we used to be?

  536. But then,

  537. what do we do?

  538. And Paul says,

  539. well,

  540. I press on.

  541. Right?

  542. Press on like Paul.

  543. Three times he says it,

  544. right?

  545. Verse 12,

  546. I press on

  547. to make it my own.

  548. Verse 13,

  549. I strain forward

  550. to what lies ahead.

  551. Verse 14,

  552. I press on

  553. towards the goal.

  554. I press on.

  555. I pursue.

  556. I mean,

  557. Paul,

  558. he used to pursue Christians

  559. to put them in prison,

  560. right?

  561. And now he says,

  562. no,

  563. I'm pursuing Christ.

  564. I'm pursuing my goal.

  565. I run.

  566. I strain forward.

  567. The idea is

  568. this race

  569. where there's the finish line

  570. and he's running ahead

  571. to try and get the finish line.

  572. That's what Paul was doing.

  573. Even though he's very careful,

  574. look,

  575. this is not me achieving

  576. my salvation,

  577. right?

  578. It is still grace,

  579. right?

  580. Verse 12,

  581. I press on

  582. to make it my own

  583. because Christ Jesus

  584. has made me His own.

  585. Jesus has already

  586. made me His own.

  587. Jesus has already done it.

  588. He's brought me to Himself,

  589. but now I want Him.

  590. I want to pursue Him.

  591. He's pursued me,

  592. but now I pursue Him.

  593. And that's,

  594. yeah,

  595. so we are saved by grace,

  596. but Paul wants it.

  597. What does Paul mean?

  598. Yeah,

  599. just knowing Christ,

  600. being like Him,

  601. right?

  602. Seeking to grow

  603. through reading

  604. and praying

  605. and becoming more loving

  606. and holy

  607. and,

  608. you know,

  609. looking for ways

  610. to love people,

  611. looking for ways

  612. to spread the gospel,

  613. looking for ways

  614. to,

  615. you know,

  616. do all the stuff

  617. that,

  618. if you've read Philippians,

  619. you see Paul do,

  620. right?

  621. If you've read

  622. the first two chapters,

  623. so many things

  624. about gospel centrality

  625. and about putting others first,

  626. all that kind of stuff.

  627. Now,

  628. we read that

  629. and maybe you think,

  630. well,

  631. Paul is this crazy maniac,

  632. right?

  633. I mean,

  634. this is Paul.

  635. Paul is,

  636. he's a bit nuts.

  637. He's a super Christian

  638. and I'm just ordinary.

  639. But actually,

  640. Paul says that

  641. this is for all of us,

  642. right?

  643. Verse 17,

  644. brothers,

  645. join in imitating me

  646. and keep your eyes

  647. on those who walk

  648. according to the example

  649. you have in us,

  650. right?

  651. Follow my example.

  652. Follow those who are like me,

  653. people like Timothy

  654. and Epaphroditus

  655. who we read about

  656. in the,

  657. if you've read chapter two,

  658. right?

  659. Now,

  660. that shows that Paul

  661. doesn't mean

  662. do exactly what I did.

  663. I mean,

  664. think about Paul,

  665. right?

  666. He planted

  667. over 20 churches.

  668. He wrote half

  669. the New Testament

  670. and he says,

  671. okay,

  672. imitate me.

  673. It doesn't mean

  674. that we should do

  675. exactly the same thing

  676. as he did,

  677. right?

  678. We can't.

  679. No,

  680. he's thinking about

  681. a mindset,

  682. a mindset

  683. that we want to grow,

  684. a mindset

  685. that we want

  686. to press on.

  687. I mean,

  688. standards don't really work.

  689. I mean,

  690. standards are a problem,

  691. right?

  692. Because either we think

  693. we've met them

  694. or we think

  695. we can't meet them,

  696. right?

  697. Maybe if the standard

  698. was,

  699. okay,

  700. read the Bible every day

  701. and pray two times a day

  702. and then you've done enough.

  703. I mean,

  704. when you've done that

  705. then you just think,

  706. hey,

  707. that's fine,

  708. I can relax now,

  709. I've done everything.

  710. That's not right.

  711. That doesn't help.

  712. Or you think,

  713. I could never do that

  714. and you despair.

  715. No,

  716. Paul doesn't think like that.

  717. I mean,

  718. clearly it's not about

  719. a standard,

  720. right?

  721. Otherwise,

  722. Paul would have met it,

  723. right?

  724. Surely if it was about

  725. a standard,

  726. Paul could have said,

  727. I've done enough,

  728. right?

  729. I mean,

  730. he met Jesus

  731. on the road to Damascus.

  732. He's an official apostle.

  733. He planted over 20 churches.

  734. He's now in prison

  735. and he says,

  736. hey,

  737. every single prison guard

  738. has heard the gospel from me.

  739. Surely if anyone has done enough,

  740. it's Paul.

  741. But he says,

  742. I'm not there yet.

  743. I press on.

  744. So,

  745. of course,

  746. the real standard is Jesus.

  747. If you're like Jesus,

  748. then you can relax,

  749. right?

  750. If you're perfect,

  751. but we're not.

  752. No,

  753. it's just a mindset.

  754. A mindset that,

  755. hey,

  756. we want to grow.

  757. We want to press on.

  758. No matter where you're at.

  759. And I think it's so helpful

  760. that he just says,

  761. one thing I do,

  762. forgetting what lies behind.

  763. Verse 13.

  764. I just,

  765. I forget what lies behind.

  766. I strain forward.

  767. I just,

  768. I want to press on now.

  769. Because we find it so easy

  770. to look forward,

  771. to look back.

  772. But Paul says,

  773. hey,

  774. don't worry about the past.

  775. Don't think about the past.

  776. Maybe some of us,

  777. oh,

  778. back when I was a student,

  779. then I did a lot of evangelism.

  780. And so now I can relax.

  781. Maybe,

  782. you know,

  783. before I had kids,

  784. I was a CG leader

  785. and I was on the music team.

  786. And so I've done my bit

  787. and now I can relax.

  788. But that's not Paul's thinking.

  789. Paul says,

  790. I press on.

  791. So don't think about

  792. what you did in the past.

  793. Are you pressing on today?

  794. Right?

  795. Today,

  796. are we,

  797. are you trying to grow?

  798. Are you trying to become more loving?

  799. Are you pressing on

  800. and knowing Jesus?

  801. Or we look back in despair.

  802. Maybe it's the start of the year

  803. and you've looked back at 2024

  804. and you feel like such a failure.

  805. I'm so useless,

  806. right?

  807. I've struggled to pray.

  808. I've struggled to read.

  809. Every quarter,

  810. I start a Bible reading plan

  811. and I give up

  812. and I'm just useless,

  813. you know?

  814. Paul says,

  815. forget what lies behind.

  816. Don't worry about that.

  817. Can you pray today?

  818. Can you press on today?

  819. Can you read something today?

  820. Right?

  821. It's a mindset.

  822. How can we press on today?

  823. Because God knows

  824. all of us are different.

  825. Some people,

  826. they're young

  827. and single

  828. and fit

  829. and maybe you,

  830. you have a big family

  831. and a very demanding job

  832. and,

  833. you know,

  834. that's different.

  835. And one person

  836. is a very young Christian

  837. and someone else

  838. has been a Christian

  839. for decades,

  840. right?

  841. Pressing on looks different

  842. for each one of us.

  843. Don't compare yourself

  844. with others.

  845. Don't,

  846. you know,

  847. maybe you're a young Christian

  848. and this year

  849. you want to read

  850. one of those big

  851. Old Testament books.

  852. that's a great thing

  853. for you to do.

  854. Someone else,

  855. maybe you've read the Bible

  856. cover to cover 15 times.

  857. I mean,

  858. for you there would be nothing.

  859. Is there something else

  860. you can do?

  861. How can we press on?

  862. And for each of us

  863. there will be things

  864. we can do.

  865. Maybe there are sins

  866. we can fight.

  867. And we can pray.

  868. We can read something.

  869. We can find ways

  870. to serve Christ.

  871. We have gospel decisions

  872. that we can make.

  873. Right?

  874. But is that our desire?

  875. Are we seeking to grow?

  876. Hey,

  877. we're in Christ.

  878. We have His righteousness

  879. but we want to be

  880. more like Him.

  881. So,

  882. this year,

  883. 2025,

  884. right?

  885. Let's say

  886. I'm not there yet.

  887. I want more of Christ.

  888. I want more holiness,

  889. more love.

  890. What can I do?

  891. How can I keep running?

  892. How can I keep straining?

  893. forward.

  894. And that matters.

  895. It matters,

  896. I mean,

  897. partly for ourselves,

  898. partly for the world,

  899. right?

  900. We want to shine like stars.

  901. We want people

  902. to see Jesus

  903. in our lives.

  904. Of course,

  905. we want our lives

  906. to more and more

  907. radiate His beauty

  908. and glory.

  909. Although Paul also says,

  910. he goes on

  911. in the same passage,

  912. by the way,

  913. that pressing on

  914. is also safe.

  915. And why?

  916. Well,

  917. Paul wants to warn us.

  918. I mean,

  919. he does a lot of warning.

  920. I mean,

  921. he warned them about

  922. Judaizers who tell you

  923. to keep the law.

  924. You don't need that.

  925. But he also says,

  926. watch out for fakes.

  927. Watch out for fakes.

  928. Verse 17,

  929. brothers,

  930. brothers,

  931. join in imitating me.

  932. Keep your eyes

  933. on those who walk

  934. according to the example

  935. you have in us.

  936. For many,

  937. of whom I have often told you

  938. and now tell you

  939. even with tears,

  940. walk as enemies

  941. of the cross of Christ.

  942. Keep focused

  943. on people like me

  944. and people like me,

  945. but watch out

  946. for those people,

  947. right?

  948. I'm telling you,

  949. I'm warning you,

  950. don't follow them.

  951. Now,

  952. what kind of people?

  953. It doesn't give much detail,

  954. but we can work out

  955. a few things,

  956. right?

  957. I mean,

  958. certainly,

  959. he's saying,

  960. watch out for these people

  961. who say,

  962. they say they are Christians.

  963. Christians.

  964. I mean,

  965. I think the Philippians

  966. know that there's a difference

  967. between those who follow Jesus

  968. and those who don't,

  969. right?

  970. They see persecution,

  971. they've been converted.

  972. They don't have to watch out

  973. for that they're in danger

  974. of following those

  975. who don't know Jesus.

  976. So,

  977. there will be people

  978. who say they're Christians,

  979. but verse 19,

  980. their end is destruction,

  981. right?

  982. These people

  983. are not with Jesus.

  984. They're not going to heaven.

  985. So,

  986. they seem to be fake.

  987. But why not?

  988. Well,

  989. the problem

  990. is their life,

  991. right?

  992. They walk as enemies

  993. of the cross of Christ.

  994. Walking

  995. is the Bible word

  996. for our daily life,

  997. our normal

  998. day-to-day behavior.

  999. And that behavior,

  1000. he says,

  1001. it's enemies

  1002. of the cross,

  1003. right?

  1004. They are denying

  1005. the cross

  1006. by their lives.

  1007. And why?

  1008. I think

  1009. they're saying

  1010. that sin doesn't matter.

  1011. Right?

  1012. Verse 19,

  1013. their end is destruction.

  1014. Their God

  1015. is their belly

  1016. and they glory

  1017. in their shame.

  1018. Who is ruling

  1019. their life

  1020. is their belly,

  1021. their stomach,

  1022. their physical desires.

  1023. That is their God.

  1024. That is the one

  1025. ruling their life.

  1026. They glory

  1027. in their shame.

  1028. They do shameful things

1029. and they're proud of it.

  1030. They glory in it.

  1031. I think

  1032. their mind

1033. is set on earthly things.

  1034. Their focus

  1035. is just this world,

  1036. right?

  1037. Rather than

  1038. our citizenship

  1039. is in heaven.

  1040. So it seems

  1041. these are people,

  1042. yeah,

  1043. they're living

  1044. this indulgent,

  1045. sinful lifestyle

  1046. and they think

  1047. it's fine.

  1048. They think

  1049. it's normal.

  1050. And that is wrong.

  1051. And I think

  1052. that that makes sense,

  1053. right?

  1054. Because

1055. that is how we started.

  1056. If Jesus

  1057. has done everything,

  1058. then

  1059. I don't need to

  1060. do anything.

  1061. I can just live

  1062. however I want.

  1063. Well,

  1064. it's the opposite

  1065. of pressing on.

  1066. No,

  1067. Paul says

  1068. that that's not right.

  1069. If people like that,

  1070. they're fake.

  1071. It's very tempting though.

1072. That's why he warns them,

  1073. right?

1074. Maybe you find it hard

  1075. to be a Christian

1076. and you're in your office

1077. and here's this other person

  1078. and they say

  1079. they're a Christian

  1080. but they,

  1081. you know,

  1082. they're completely dishonest

1083. in all their business dealings.

1084. They just live for pleasure

  1085. and you're having

  1086. a hard time

  1087. and you think

  1088. in a way

  1089. it would be nice

1090. to be like this person.

  1091. But Paul says

  1092. no,

  1093. no,

  1094. no,

  1095. that's a fake.

1096. That's someone denying the cross.

  1097. They're focused on earth.

1098. We are citizens of heaven.

  1099. That's our focus,

  1100. right?

  1101. We pursue Christ

  1102. unlike them.

  1103. I don't know

  1104. if that's something

  1105. that's tempting for you

1106. but that is Paul's warning.

  1107. You know,

  1108. press on

1109. because you want to be safe.

  1110. Now,

  1111. I know I get two responses

  1112. when I say that.

1113. Some of you will say,

  1114. hey,

1115. but aren't we saved by grace?

  1116. Surely we're not saved

  1117. by what we do

1118. and so they are not condemned

  1119. by what they do.

1120. How can you say it's fake?

  1121. Well,

  1122. the thing is,

  1123. yes,

  1124. we're saved by grace.

1125. We're saved by what Jesus has done

1126. but Jesus doesn't just give us a status,

  1127. right?

1128. Jesus comes into our life.

  1129. Grace changes us.

1130. It gives us new desires.

1131. He gives us the Holy Spirit

1132. who wants to make us holy

  1133. and so Christians

  1134. want to be holy

  1135. and a Christian

  1136. who has no desire

  1137. for holiness,

  1138. well,

1139. is there a Holy Spirit in them?

  1140. That's the question

  1141. the Bible would ask,

  1142. right?

  1143. Are they,

  1144. yeah,

1145. is there really grace at work

  1146. if there's no change

  1147. in desires?

  1148. And the other response

  1149. that people say

  1150. is people are worried.

  1151. Hey,

  1152. my life isn't great.

  1153. You know,

1154. I look at my life

  1155. and it's so rubbish.

1156. I'm really not pressing on.

  1157. Am I a fake?

  1158. Right?

1159. I know that sounds very tricky

  1160. especially because

1161. Paul does seem to distinguish

  1162. between some people,

  1163. right?

  1164. In verse 15,

  1165. he says,

  1166. let those of us

  1167. who are mature

  1168. think this way

  1169. and if in anything

  1170. you think otherwise,

1171. God will reveal that also to you.

1172. So there are some people

1173. who are not pressing on

  1174. and Paul says,

  1175. hey,

1176. God will sort you out.

  1177. He's not worried.

  1178. Well,

  1179. there's other people,

  1180. yeah,

  1181. in verse 18

  1182. where he's really

  1183. telling with tears

  1184. don't be like them.

  1185. I think it's good to remember

  1186. it's not about a standard,

  1187. right?

  1188. It's about a mindset,

  1189. about a direction.

  1190. It's not about

1191. have you reached this standard?

  1192. No,

  1193. what is the direction

  1194. of your heart?

  1195. Right?

1196. Do you want to know Christ more

1197. even if you don't know

  1198. him very well now?

1199. Do you want to know him more?

1200. Do you want to be more holy

  1201. even if you're not

  1202. very holy now?

1203. Do you want to press on?

1204. If you don't want to,

1205. if you're happy as you are,

1206. if you don't want to change anything,

  1207. then it's a problem.

1208. But if you want to,

1209. even if there's not much

  1210. pressing on yet,

  1211. I think

1212. Paul isn't worried about you.

  1213. Just keep pressing on.

  1214. That's the thing,

  1215. right?

  1216. It's just staying safe.

  1217. Keep pressing on.

  1218. That's the best way

  1219. to know,

  1220. you know,

  1221. just press on.

  1222. It's like with exercise.

  1223. How much exercise

  1224. is enough,

  1225. right?

1226. We want to be fit.

1227. We want to make sure

  1228. our heart is okay

1229. and those kind of things.

1230. We want to do some exercise.

  1231. Maybe you don't know

1232. if it's enough or not.

  1233. The best way

1234. is just keep doing exercise,

  1235. right?

  1236. Don't think,

  1237. well,

  1238. I'm going to stop

1239. just in case I've done enough.

  1240. No,

  1241. let's keep going.

  1242. And so Paul says,

  1243. just press on.

  1244. It's good.

  1245. It's great.

  1246. It keeps you safe.

  1247. But ultimately,

  1248. staying safe

1249. is not the main thing,

  1250. right?

  1251. Look,

1252. who do you want to be?

1253. That is what this passage

  1254. is asking,

  1255. right?

1256. Do you want to be someone

  1257. and your God

  1258. is your belly?

1259. Do you want your stomach

  1260. to be your God?

1261. That's who controls my life.

1262. Or do you want Jesus

  1263. to be your God,

  1264. right?

  1265. Do you want him

1266. at the center of your life?

  1267. That's much more beautiful,

  1268. right?

1269. That is his beautiful love

  1270. and glorious holiness,

  1271. right?

1272. You want him to be

  1273. in your life,

  1274. right?

1275. Surely you want to be

  1276. like Paul

  1277. rather than like

  1278. one of these people

  1279. indulging themselves.

  1280. And that is who

  1281. you will be,

  1282. right?

  1283. Jesus is committed

  1284. to you.

  1285. Jesus says,

  1286. Paul says,

  1287. our citizenship

  1288. is in heaven

  1289. and from it

  1290. we await a Savior,

  1291. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1292. who will transform

  1293. our lowly body

  1294. to be like

  1295. his glorious body

  1296. by the power

  1297. that enables him

  1298. even to subject

  1299. all things

  1300. to himself.

  1301. Jesus is going

  1302. to make

  1303. the whole universe

  1304. his and he's going

  1305. to make you

  1306. fully his

  1307. one day

  1308. when he comes back

  1309. and your lowly body

  1310. will be changed

  1311. to his glorious,

  1312. to be like

  1313. his glorious body.

  1314. But that power

  1315. is here now

  1316. today,

  1317. right?

  1318. Jesus,

  1319. he would love you

  1320. to be more holy,

  1321. right?

1322. If you want to know

  1323. him more,

  1324. he is there

  1325. to help you.

  1326. But if you want

  1327. to beat that sin,

  1328. he is there

  1329. to help you.

  1330. You can know

  1331. more of Christ now

  1332. with the power.

  1333. He is more powerful

  1334. than your sin.

  1335. He is more powerful

  1336. than your cold heart.

  1337. He can do everything.

  1338. So,

  1339. let's press on.

  1340. In this new year,

  1341. by the Spirit's power,

  1342. let's press on.

  1343. Let's pursue Christ.

  1344. Let's try

1345. and become more like him.

  1346. Maybe,

  1347. no,

1348. let's talk about it later,

  1349. over coffee,

  1350. over lunch.

  1351. Hey,

  1352. what are things

  1353. that we can do?

1354. How can you know me?

1355. You're with your CG members.

  1356. What do you think

1357. I should do this year?

1358. How can I press on?

  1359. What are things

  1360. that are not helpful

1361. that I should stop doing?

  1362. How can we help

  1363. each other press on?

  1364. Don't keep going.

  1365. And even if

  1366. the past few days

  1367. were rubbish,

  1368. let's press on today.

  1369. Let's make this

  1370. a wonderful year.

  1371. Let's make 2025

  1372. the year

1373. where we keep pressing on,

  1374. where we keep pursuing.

  1375. Christ

  1376. for his glory

  1377. and for the good

  1378. of the whole world.

1379. Why don't we pray together?

  1380. Lord Jesus,

1381. thank you for making us

  1382. your own.

  1383. We didn't deserve it,

  1384. but you came down

  1385. and you

  1386. will

  1387. one day

  1388. make us like you.

  1389. Father,

1390. we want to press on

  1391. this year.

1392. Help us to follow Jesus.

  1393. Help us to see

  1394. what we can do.

  1395. But yeah,

  1396. help us see

  1397. how wonderful it is

  1398. to know you more,

  1399. to know Jesus,

  1400. to become like him.

  1401. Help us press on.

1402. Help us to watch out

  1403. for those who would

  1404. lead us astray.

  1405. Help us to keep

  1406. running the race.

  1407. And would you

  1408. be with us?

  1409. By your spirit,

  1410. would you

  1411. keep changing us,

  1412. make us more

  1413. and more like Jesus,

  1414. which is a wonderful

  1415. thing.

  1416. We need your help

  1417. with that.

  1418. We can't do it

  1419. by ourselves.

  1420. But thanks to

  1421. you and your spirit

  1422. and your grace,

  1423. we can keep

  1424. running the race

  1425. this coming year.

  1426. And so we pray

  1427. this in Jesus' name.

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Amen.

  1430. Amen.

  1431. Amen.

  1432. Amen.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Amen.

  1443. Amen.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Amen.

  1446. Amen.

  1447. Amen.

  1448. Amen.

  1449. Amen.

  1450. Amen.

  1451. Amen.
