  1. As we begin, I am sure we are all aware in different ways of the power of words. Words positively

  2. ! Words positively can move us to tears. The beauty of a story or a poem perhaps. But words can also move us to tears as we experience someone's anger or abuse.

  3. Words can affect the course of our lives.

  4. Perhaps the wise guidance from a trusted friend leads us to a path of study or work that has gone well for us.

  5. Or negatively, the cutting comments that a child experiences might strip them of worth and affect the course of their life negatively.

  6. The power of words, in part at least, is related to the one who is speaking.

  7. If we imagine ourselves as children for a moment, if you had a brother or a sister who said to you, stop that thing you're doing, stop it.

  8. Depending on your mood, that may have some effect.

  9. I suspect if parents say stop it, it has, should have a greater effect.

  10. But if a policeman invites us to stop something, then absolutely we're going to stop.

  11. The power of words are also connected to how much weight we allow them to have in our lives.

  12. And again, we will know this.

  13. There are some times we receive comments, perhaps criticism, perhaps praise, and we pay close attention.

  14. There's this huge positive sort of impact on us.

  15. Other times, words might come and they're like water off a duck's back to us.

  16. That's true with human words.

  17. And we all have that kind of experience.

  18. But if that's true with human words, how much more powerful are God's words?

  19. And therefore, how much more weight God's word should have in our lives?

  20. And one of the things that the Bible does is to speak for itself about its power.

  21. God's word is powerful.

  22. Think about some of the familiar descriptions the Bible gives.

  23. So we have in Ephesians 6, that description of the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

  24. Hebrews chapter 4, God's word is living and active, piercing to the division of soul and spirit.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  25. Those famous prophetic words from Isaiah, where God declares his word never returns empty,

  26. but always accomplishes its purpose, whether that purpose is judgment or salvation.

  27. Or Jeremiah 23, God says, my word is like fire.

  28. God's word is powerful.

  29. Just by way of our own reflection, when was the last time you really felt the weight of God's word?

  30. When you felt compelled by what you read towards a new obedience to God's command?

  31. Well, this section that we're reading, it can feel like a kind of an in-between,

  32. those great miracles of Elijah being provided for, the widow's son being raised,

  33. and then we've got this great confrontation.

  34. But in this section, the spotlight really shines on the power of God's living word

  35. in contrast to that powerless silence of the idols.

  36. The power of God's living word will direct the prophet.

  37. It clearly gives courage to an administrator.

  38. It challenges a wicked king.

  39. It calls for obedience.

  40. It calls for belief.

  41. It calls for repentance.

  42. And so we're going to hear it speak.

  43. And we're going to hear Jesus speak as we get into his word.

  44. And as we begin to hear Jesus, the living word speak to us,

  45. as he would bring by the Spirit his word to bear on each one of us,

  46. will we let it cut deep to have its impact?

  47. Will we let it burn within us so that God's desired purposes would come to pass in our lives also?

  48. So what we're going to do is we're going to think about each of the different human figures in the story

  49. and think about different aspects of how God's word comes to them.

  50. So first of all, thinking about Elijah, recognizing that God's powerful word calls for obedience.

  51. So there is in Elijah's story this pattern of call and response.

  52. We first meet him in chapter 17, verse 1,

  53. and he is called by God to go into Ahab's presence to announce

  54. that there's going to be no dew, no rain falling.

  55. And then he again is called in verse 3 of chapter 17 to go to a ravine,

  56. because God's going to look after him there.

  57. And then in verse 9 of chapter 17, again, he has to go to the widow's house to be provided for.

  58. And in each time, he responds with obedience.

  59. And now we come to chapter 18, verse 1,

  60. He hears the call, he responds with obedience.

  61. He's going to go back into the king's presence.

  62. He's no longer living in a different country in the background.

  63. Now he's going to deliver God's word to the king.

  64. And with these words, two different famines are going to be over.

  65. So he announces, God says, I'm going to send rain.

  66. So the physical famine is going to be over.

  67. But now as God's spokesman speaks in the public sphere,

  68. the famine of hearing God's word is also over.

  69. However, the other great need for the king, for the nation, is to hear God speak.

  70. This came, this book came to a group of people who also were outside of Israel.

  71. They were living in exile.

  72. And this message, as it would come to them, would speak hope for them,

  73. having lived in rebellion, having now been sent into exile,

  74. that they were invited to hear and to respond with obedience to the word of God.

  75. So as we continue in Elijah's story, though, here,

  76. we recognize in verses 7 and 8 that Elijah is moving back into the country

  77. and he encounters Obadiah.

  78. So obedience leads him to have this discussion with Obadiah.

  79. We discover that Obadiah has been on this task for the king.

  80. He's been searching for grass, for the animals.

  81. And he's also been part of this search team looking to find the prophet

  82. in order, I think, to get rid of him.

  83. And we'll come back to Obadiah.

  84. But Obadiah is a striking character because he works for an evil king.

  85. But clearly he serves God as his true king.

  86. You can even hear it in the way that he speaks to Elijah.

  87. Is it really you, my lord, Elijah?

  88. There's respect there versus Ahab.

  89. Oh, is that you, troubler of Israel?

  90. But as Obadiah and Elijah begin to have this discussion

  91. and Elijah says, listen, I've been told to present myself to the king,

  92. we get that sense that Obadiah is desperately worried.

  93. Well, what if the spirit, Elijah, takes you away?

  94. Clearly he understands that God's spirit has been protecting Elijah from Ahab.

  95. And so he's always evaded his capture.

  96. And Obadiah is saying, well, listen, if you disappear again from the public view,

  97. then it's my neck on the line.

  98. But notice what Elijah says towards the end of their conversation.

  99. Verse 15, 16.

  100. As the Lord Almighty lives whom I serve,

  101. I will surely present myself to Ahab today.

  102. Why is he going to do this?

  103. Why is he going to take the risk of going into the presence of the angry king?

  104. Because he serves the Lord Almighty.

  105. God said, appear before the king, so he is surely going to present himself.

  106. And so you get this picture of Elijah as the prophet of God,

  107. the man of God,

  108. who absolutely takes his marching orders for his life from God's word.

  109. Even if it involves risk,

  110. because now he's back in public,

  111. and he knows that Ahab wants nothing to do with him,

  112. he is going to obey.

  113. There is one voice that holds sway in Elijah's life,

  114. and it's the voice of God.

  115. And wonderfully, because he responds to God's word in obedience,

  116. and we'll see this next week,

  117. God is going to be glorified within the nation.

  118. He's going to be shown to be the one and only God,

  119. the one true king,

  120. the only one who deserves obedience and worship,

  121. the one whose authority should never be ignored.

  122. There's this wonderful demonstration,

  123. in part because of Elijah's obedience.

  124. A couple of very basic points of application for ourselves.

  125. The first, God's people are always called to obey God's word.

  126. It's a pattern you can trace all the way through scripture.

  127. Think about someone like Abraham.

  128. Abraham is told,

  129. leave everything behind and go to the land I will show you.

  130. And in faith, he obeys.

  131. Or we can think of Moses.

  132. Moses, who gets the message,

  133. Moses, I've chosen you to be the man to go and speak to King Pharaoh

  134. and to set my people free.

  135. And again, somewhat reluctantly, but with faith,

  136. Moses goes.

  137. At a very different level,

  138. we've met a widow

  139. who is told by God through the prophet Elijah,

  140. go and make a meal for my servant in faith that you'll be provided for.

  141. And again, she goes.

  142. You know, trace it to the New Testament.

  143. Think about the command that Jesus gives to his disciples.

  144. Go and make disciples of all nations.

  145. And the book of Acts records them doing exactly that.

  146. That God will always call his people to obey his word.

  147. And one of the striking things,

  148. when you think about those stories and so many more,

  149. in none of those stories,

  150. is obedience, a comfortable thing.

  151. That there is always that sense where faith has us living on the edge.

  152. Where we really need, instead of trusting ourselves

  153. and living in our comfort zones,

  154. we need to trust God's presence,

  155. God's power,

  156. God's promises.

  157. Faith says,

  158. come what may,

  159. God's word has the most weight in my life.

  160. That regardless of how I will be received,

  161. I will submit to Jesus,

  162. the living word,

  163. and to the authority of the Bible.

  164. Because we've come to discover its truth and its power.

  165. To quote from Abraham Lincoln,

  166. who famously said this of the Bible,

  167. I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man.

  168. All the good from the Savior of the world

  169. is communicated to us through this book.

  170. When we get that,

  171. then we understand the call to obey.

  172. So just think at where we are right now,

  173. where you are in your own circumstances.

  174. How is God's word calling you to go?

  175. Maybe it's go and deal with that sin in your life.

  176. Or maybe it's go,

  177. put things right with that family member,

  178. or that friend.

  179. Maybe it's the call to go to your job,

  180. or to your school,

  181. as an active witness for Jesus.

  182. Maybe there's someone that God's put on your heart,

  183. and the message is,

  184. go and bring them words of hope,

  185. and comfort,

  186. and encouragement.

  187. But whoever God's word comes to us,

  188. and compels us,

  189. calling us to obey,

  190. will you and I say,

  191. to do your will I take delight.

  192. So God's people are always called to obey God's word.

  193. But I want to say secondly,

  194. that God's people obey for a particular reason.

  195. We obey because of love.

  196. And I think that's really important to say.

  197. You know,

  198. Jesus makes the connection with his disciples.

  199. In a couple of years,

  200. he says,

  201. you are my friends,

  202. if you obey my commands.

  203. And then,

  204. he puts it even more starkly,

  205. if you love me,

  206. keep my commands.

  207. So there's this connection between love for Jesus,

  208. and obedience to his word.

  209. So,

  210. in other words,

  211. our obedience is not some kind of dull duty.

  212. What we're talking about here is not moralism.

  213. It's not,

  214. I'm trying to find God by doing enough good works.

  215. I'm not trying to get into favor with God

  216. by some form of obedience.

  217. Rather,

  218. Christian motivation is different.

  219. Because God has already found us.

  220. Because God has loved us first,

  221. we respond with obedience.

  222. We let God's grace and kindness to us

  223. mobilize and motivate us to glad obedience.

  224. We listen to the word of the gospel.

  225. The gospel that introduces us to the reality of Jesus,

  226. the Son of God,

  227. who fully,

  228. perfectly obeyed God's word and God's will.

  229. An obedience that led him to the cross at Calvary.

  230. Where he would suffer and die.

  231. Facing the judgment for all the sin,

  232. all the wrongs that we have done,

  233. so that by his act of saving mercy and goodness and love,

  234. you and I can hear words of pardon,

  235. words of welcome.

  236. And Jesus rose from the dead,

  237. and has sent his spirit to live in the hearts of his people,

  238. so that now in the gospel,

  239. we also have a motivation to obey,

  240. and a new ability to obey.

  241. God has, in effect,

  242. performed a spiritual heart transplant,

  243. so that now instead of being hard towards him,

  244. we can respond in love and truly obey.

  245. To change the imagery,

  246. he has performed a prison break.

  247. He has broken the chains of sin that held us captive.

  248. Now that we are no longer slaves,

  249. again, we are enabled to obey.

  250. We have freedom to obey.

  251. We have freedom in the gospel,

  252. and our gospel freedom

  253. is expressed in joyful obedience.

  254. Jesus doesn't set us free

  255. so we can live however we want to live,

  256. regardless of God's word.

  257. Rather,

  258. Jesus sets us free,

  259. the Spirit sets us free,

  260. so that we might gladly obey.

  261. To give us that desire we never had before,

  262. now I want to live a life that pleases God,

  263. because of all that he has done for me.

  264. Now I want to love God by loving my neighbor,

  265. because God has loved me and saved me.

  266. And so perhaps for us,

  267. the daily prayer of faith becomes,

  268. speak, Lord.

  269. Your servant is listening.

  270. And perhaps before we open our Bibles,

  271. we pray those words from Psalm 119,

  272. open my eyes to see wonderful things in your word,

  273. and give me that desire to obey.

  274. So God's powerful word calls for obedience.

  275. But now we're going to turn to Obadiah,

  276. and we're going to think about the fact

  277. that God's powerful word also calls for belief.

  278. And a belief in a context that can be very challenging.

  279. Just to help us to get into the setting a little bit,

  280. you maybe saw in the news this week

  281. that one of the fringe events that was happening at Summer Hall,

  282. so just down the road,

  283. it made the news.

  284. There was a Herald newspaper event,

  285. and Kate Forbes, the deputy first minister,

  286. was invited for a long-ranging interview.

  287. And the day after that event,

  288. Summer Hall announced

  289. that Kate Forbes would never be invited back.

  290. For the safety and the well-being

  291. of every other fringe performer,

  292. she was not welcome.

  293. Maybe you're asking,

  294. well, what did she talk about?

  295. And actually, there was no problem

  296. with the content of the interview.

  297. The problem lies in the fact

  298. that she has views on gender

  299. and gay marriage that come from the Bible

  300. that are beyond the pale to some people.

  301. And so,

  302. Summer Hall felt compelled

  303. to say that Kate Forbes was no longer welcome.

  304. I mention this in part

  305. to remind us

  306. to pray

  307. for followers of Jesus

  308. who are in positions of power.

  309. And for people working in politics

  310. and local government

  311. who find themselves

  312. working sometimes

  313. in hostile religious atmospheres.

  314. Because that's exactly

  315. where Obadiah finds himself.

  316. So here is Obadiah.

  317. He's the administrator for Ahab.

  318. Ahab is an awful king.

  319. And Obadiah is a man of God

  320. who's having to figure out,

  321. how do I work

  322. faithfully for God

  323. working for this guy.

  324. And in so doing,

  325. he stands in line with

  326. Joseph

  327. in the book of Genesis.

  328. He stands in line with

  329. Daniel

  330. as believers

  331. in the one true God

  332. who find themselves

  333. serving pagan kings

  334. in a hostile environment.

  335. And they are called

  336. to believe God's word

  337. even when that is

  338. profoundly challenging.

  339. One of the things

  340. that this section

  341. does for us,

  342. we don't meet Obadiah

  343. really much in the Bible,

  344. but it shows us

  345. in this little scene

  346. that he's very different

  347. to his boss,

  348. Ahab.

  349. So we already

  350. notice that he calls him

  351. my lord,

  352. Elijah.

  353. Ahab calls him

  354. the troubler of Israel.

  355. Look at how he is introduced

  356. in verse 3,

  357. Obadiah was a devout

  358. believer in the Lord.

  359. Whereas we've already been

  360. introduced to Ahab

  361. and we discover

  362. that he's been

  363. one of the worst kings

  364. leading them away

  365. from true worship.

  366. We discover too

  367. that Obadiah

  368. has been practicing

  369. a very costly faith.

  370. Look at verse 4,

  371. while Jezebel

  372. was killing off

  373. the Lord's prophets,

  374. Obadiah had taken

  375. a hundred prophets,

  376. hidden them in two caves,

  377. fifty in each,

  378. and had supplied them

  379. with food and water.

  380. And he tells Elijah

  381. the very same thing

  382. in verse 13.

  383. It's costly

  384. in the sense that,

  385. remember,

  386. this is a time of famine.

  387. So resources are scarce.

  388. Water is hard to come by.

  389. Food is hard to come by.

  390. But he is,

  391. out of his own pocket,

  392. looking after

  393. a hundred prophets

  394. in two different caves.

  395. And he's doing that

  396. at a time

  397. when the queen,

  398. Jezebel,

  399. is looking to hunt down

  400. and kill prophets.

  401. This is costly faith.

  402. And that's really brought out

  403. as well in that conversation

  404. between Elijah and Obadiah

  405. where we discover

  406. he has an all-or-nothing faith.

  407. Because he obviously

  408. has a legitimate fear

  409. for his life.

  410. Ahab, his boss,

  411. is obsessed with

  412. finding Elijah.

  413. He's going not just

  414. within his own country,

  415. he's going to different countries,

  416. asking the leaders there,

  417. asking the officials,

  418. have you seen this man?

  419. If you have,

  420. hand him over.

  421. He absolutely hates

  422. Elijah

  423. and what Elijah

  424. represents.

  425. And so he is on

  426. this mission

  427. to destroy him.

  428. I couldn't help

  429. thinking of Star Wars.

  430. It's like

  431. the dark side

  432. in the Star Wars,

  433. always hunting down

  434. the Jedis,

  435. the rebels

  436. across the galaxies.

  437. That's the kind of picture

  438. you get of

  439. Ahab.

  440. Ahab.

  441. And Obadiah

  442. understands

  443. that if God

  444. does in the present

  445. what he's done

  446. in the past,

  447. rescuing Elijah,

  448. keeping him safe,

  449. Obadiah will die.

  450. But,

  451. look at verse 16.

  452. Knowing all that

  453. to be true,

  454. Obadiah went

  455. to meet Ahab

  456. and told him.

  457. And Ahab

  458. went to meet

  459. Elijah.

  460. He believes,

  461. he trusts,

  462. he goes.

  463. A couple of things

  464. from Obadiah's story.

  465. One is this,

  466. that where

  467. you work

  468. or where you study

  469. may well become

  470. a battleground

  471. for your belief.

  472. Think about

  473. your own experience

  474. as a Christian

  475. in school

  476. or uni

  477. or the workplace.

  478. And I imagine

  479. for some of us

  480. the situation

  481. will be

  482. we are isolated,

  483. the only Christian

  484. in our office

  485. or in our work group.

  486. And that can be hard.

  487. Sometimes it's because

  488. of the challenging

  489. conversations

  490. that are all around us

  491. and we get swept up

  492. and perhaps

  493. it's the language

  494. that's used,

  495. perhaps it's the gossips

  496. that's shared,

  497. perhaps it's just

  498. the out and out

  499. hostility to faith

  500. that is expressed.

  501. But maybe

  502. the battleground

  503. for belief

  504. in our workplace

  505. will be

  506. to do with

  507. our moral integrity

  508. and maybe

  509. the pressure

  510. to cut corners.

  511. Maybe it'll be

  512. to use AI

  513. to cheat

  514. the system.

  515. Maybe we just

  516. live with high levels

  517. of stress

  518. in our workplaces

  519. and that can affect

  520. our ability

  521. to treat

  522. others well

  523. and with patience.

  524. Sometimes the hardest

  525. place to be a Christian

  526. is where we work

  527. and sometimes

  528. if we're honest

  529. we may wish

  530. we were like

  531. those prophets

  532. hidden in a cave.

  533. Here's 50 of them

  534. and they're clustered

  535. together

  536. and it's dangerous

  537. but at least

  538. they've got one another.

  539. But most often

  540. our experience

  541. is going to be

  542. engaging

  543. with a world

  544. of work

  545. as the place

  546. where we're going

  547. to bear witness

  548. for Jesus

  549. and the difference

  550. that he made.

  551. Or that's what

  552. our calling

  553. is going to be.

  554. And probably

  555. related to that

  556. and certainly

  557. we see it

  558. in the story

  559. of Obadiah

  560. as we seek

  561. to be faithful

  562. disciples of Jesus

  563. we will understand

  564. that discipleship

  565. often comes

  566. at a cost.

  567. It's here

  568. in our story

  569. there are prophets

  570. who are wanting

  571. to serve God

  572. and they are being

  573. opposed

  574. and some of them

  575. are being killed.

  576. There is an authority

  577. figure

  578. who is determined

  579. to silence

  580. God's voice.

  581. There are people

  582. who do not want

  583. God's authority

  584. coming near

  585. and you and I

  586. will work

  587. and live around

  588. people with that

  589. same kind of attitude

  590. and therefore

  591. part of

  592. our call

  593. to obedience

  594. is about

  595. carrying our cross

  596. about sharing

  597. in the sufferings

  598. of Christ

  599. in being willing

  600. to accept

  601. rejection

  602. and opposition

  603. and to help us

  604. in that

  605. we need to consider

  606. Jesus

  607. Jesus

  608. the great prophet

  609. the true

  610. holy son

  611. of God

  612. the savior

  613. for the world

  614. but what was his

  615. experience?

  616. He was despised

  617. he was rejected

  618. and in the end

  619. people cried out

  620. crucify

  621. and so Jesus

  622. as he came

  623. seeking to be

  624. the light

  625. of the world

  626. he came to

  627. experience

  628. the hatred

  629. of the world

  630. towards the

  631. holy God

  632. and as his

  633. body

  634. as the body

  635. of Christ

  636. some of the

  637. slings and

  638. arrows that were

  639. aimed at him

  640. will come

  641. our way

  642. also

  643. and it's one

  644. of the things

  645. that Jesus

  646. did for his

  647. disciples

  648. the night

  649. before

  650. he went

  651. to the cross

  652. if you have

  653. a bible

  654. you can turn

  655. to John 16

  656. and John 17

  657. but as

  658. Jesus

  659. concludes

  660. his words

  661. of encouragement

  662. and teaching

  663. for his

  664. disciples

  665. there at the

  666. end of

  667. John 16

    John 16:33

  668. verse 33

  669. he says

  670. I've told you

  671. these things

  672. so that in me

  673. you may have

  674. peace

  675. in this world

  676. you will

  677. have trouble

  678. but take

  679. heart

  680. I have

  681. overcome

  682. the world

  683. and he

  684. prays

  685. in chapter

  686. 17

  687. for his

  688. disciples

  689. for his

  690. followers

  691. in this way

  692. my prayer

  693. is not

  694. that you

  695. take them

  696. out of the

  697. world

  698. but that you

  699. protect them

  700. from

  701. the evil

  702. one

  703. so as we

  704. go to our

  705. workplace

  706. to our

  707. places of

  708. study

  709. to places

  710. where we

  711. perhaps find

  712. ourselves

  713. opposed

  714. we claim

  715. these

  716. words

  717. that in

  718. Jesus

  719. we overcome

  720. because he

  721. has overcome

  722. that in

  723. Jesus

  724. we are

  725. protected

  726. by our

  727. father

  728. as we

  729. have that

  730. call to

  731. believe

  732. God's

  733. word

  734. and we

  735. go

  736. to work

  737. so so

  738. far we've

  739. seen that

  740. God's

  741. powerful

  742. word

  743. it calls

  744. for

  745. obedience

  746. it calls

  747. for

  748. belief

  749. but the

  750. last thing

  751. and this

  752. takes us

  753. to the

  754. story

  755. as it

  756. relates

  757. to Ahab

  758. God's

  759. powerful

  760. word

  761. confronts

  762. us

  763. now I

  764. imagine

  765. that nobody

  766. sitting here

  767. today

  768. enjoys

  769. being

  770. confronted

  771. nobody

  772. likes to

  773. be shown

  774. to be

  775. in the

  776. wrong

  777. whether

  778. we're

  779. children

  780. whether

  781. we're

  782. adults

  783. if a

  784. parent

  785. confronts

  786. us

  787. with wrong

  788. or a

  789. teacher

  790. or a

  791. boss

  792. we don't

  793. like it

  794. it

  795. challenges

  796. our

  797. pride

  798. it

  799. challenges

  800. our

  801. sense

  802. that we

  803. are in

  804. control

  805. it

  806. might

  807. even

  808. challenge

  809. our

  810. sense

  811. of

  812. identity

  813. for

  814. wrongdoing

  815. to be

  816. exposed

  817. by someone

  818. else

  819. and

  820. naturally

  821. speaking

  822. that's

  823. how the

  824. human

  825. heart

  826. chooses

  827. to respond

  828. to God's

  829. word

  830. as it

  831. comes

  832. near

  833. and

  834. King

  835. Ahab

  836. shows

  837. us

  838. that

  839. it

  840. shows

  841. us

  842. that

  843. without

  844. the

  845. gift

  846. of

  847. faith

  848. without

  849. God's

  850. spirit

  851. working

  852. in us

  853. and

  854. changing

  855. us

  856. as

  857. people

  858. we

  859. naturally

  860. resist

  861. when

  862. God's

  863. word

  864. comes

  865. and

  866. rubs

  867. up

  868. against

  869. us

  870. and

  871. it

  872. takes

  873. a

  874. work

  875. of

  876. God

  877. to

  878. bring

  879. humility

  880. and

  881. repentance

  882. and

  883. faith

  884. so

  885. just

  886. to

  887. remind

  888. ourselves

  889. about

  890. this

  891. guy

  892. Ahab

  893. he's

  894. a

  895. truly

  896. terrible

  897. king

  898. we met

  899. him

  900. in

  901. chapter

  902. 16

  903. there's

  904. this

  905. list

  906. of

  907. really

  908. bad

  909. kings

  910. and

  911. he

  912. is

  913. the

  914. bottom

  915. of

  916. the

  917. barrel

  918. and

  919. he

  920. has

  921. turned

  922. his

  923. own

  924. heart

  925. to

  926. idols

  927. and

  928. he

  929. turns

  930. the

  931. nation

  932. away

  933. from

  934. the

  935. worship

  936. of

  937. the

  938. true

  939. God

  940. to

  941. worship

  942. false

  943. gods

  944. chapter

  945. 17

  946. verse

  947. 1

  948. that

  949. turning

  950. away

  951. from

  952. God

  953. has

  954. led

  955. him

  956. and

  957. by

  958. extension

  959. the

  960. nation

  961. under

  962. God's

  963. judgment

  964. the

  965. rain

  966. is

  967. withheld

  968. his

  969. response

  970. is

  971. not

  972. repentant

  973. it's

  974. not

  975. to be

  976. humble

  977. rather

  978. it's

  979. to look

  980. to get

  981. rid

  982. of

  983. Elijah

  984. remember

  985. Obadiah's

  986. words

  987. chapter

  988. 18

  989. verse

  990. 10

  991. as

  992. surely

  993. as the

  994. Lord

  995. your

  996. God

  997. lives

  998. there's

  999. not

  1000. a

  1001. nation

  1002. or

  1003. kingdom

  1004. where

  1005. my

  1006. master

  1007. has

  1008. not

  1009. sent

  1010. someone

  1011. to

  1012. look

  1013. for

  1014. you

  1015. he

  1016. literally

  1017. wants

  1018. to

  1019. shoot

  1020. the

  1021. messenger

  1022. while

  1023. he

  1024. accuses

  1025. Elijah

  1026. of

  1027. being

  1028. the

  1029. troubler

  1030. of

  1031. Israel

  1032. ultimately

  1033. it's

  1034. Ahab

  1035. who

  1036. has

  1037. brought

  1038. trouble

  1039. on

  1040. Israel

  1041. the

  1042. spiritual

  1043. trouble

  1044. of

  1045. turning

  1046. their

  1047. backs

  1048. on

  1049. God

  1050. one

  1051. of

  1052. the

  1053. pictures

  1054. that

  1055. you

  1056. get

  1057. of

  1058. the

  1059. word

  1060. pictures

  1061. of

  1062. the

  1063. shepherds

  1064. of

  1065. the

  1066. kings

  1067. of

  1068. Israel

  1069. is

  1070. that

  1071. they

  1072. were

  1073. called

  1074. to be

  1075. the

  1076. shepherds

  1077. of

  1078. God's

  1079. people

  1080. to

  1081. lead

  1082. the

  1083. people

  1084. in

  1085. true

  1086. worship

  1087. but

  1088. you

  1089. get

  1090. this

  1091. picture

  1092. of

  1093. Ahab

  1094. in

  1095. verse

  1096. five

  1097. what's

  1098. he

  1099. looking

  1100. for

  1101. he

  1102. was

  1103. a

  1104. kind

  1105. of

  1106. shepherd

  1107. of

  1108. a

  1109. sort

  1110. but

  1111. what

  1112. he's

  1113. giving

  1114. his

  1115. attention

  1116. to

  1117. is

  1118. finding

  1119. some

  1120. grass

  1121. to

  1122. keep

  1123. his

  1124. horses

  1125. and

  1126. mules

  1127. alive

  1128. there

  1129. seems

  1130. to be

  1131. more

  1132. concern

  1133. with

  1134. his

  1135. animals

  1136. than

  1137. with

  1138. the

  1139. subjects

  1140. that

  1141. he

  1142. rules

  1143. over

  1144. he

  1145. is

  1146. more

  1147. bothered

  1148. about

  1149. finding

  1150. some

  1151. good

  1152. grass

  1153. than

  1154. he

  1155. is

  1156. about

  1157. taking

  1158. seriously

  1159. the

  1160. reality

  1161. of

  1162. God's

  1163. wrath

  1164. God's

  1165. settled

  1166. hatred

  1167. towards

  1168. what is

  1169. sinful

  1170. and evil

  1171. and so

  1172. we discover

  1173. clearly he

  1174. is not

  1175. repenting

  1176. clearly his

  1177. heart is

  1178. hard

  1179. towards

  1180. the

  1181. judgment

  1182. of

  1183. God

  1184. and that

  1185. climax is

  1186. with Elijah's

  1187. words in

  1188. verse 18

  1189. and 19

  1190. I'm not

  1191. the

  1192. troubler of

  1193. Israel

  1194. you and

  1195. your

  1196. father's

  1197. family

  1198. have

  1199. caused

  1200. trouble

  1201. why

  1202. well

  1203. firstly

  1204. you've

  1205. abandoned

  1206. the

  1207. Lord's

  1208. commands

  1209. secondly

  1210. you've

  1211. followed

  1212. the

  1213. Baals

  1214. so

  1215. they've

  1216. abandoned

  1217. God

  1218. and he

  1219. set up

  1220. alternative

  1221. gods

  1222. and so

  1223. now

  1224. the

  1225. scene

  1226. is

  1227. set

  1228. for

  1229. this

  1230. great

  1231. showdown

  1232. summon

  1233. the

  1234. people

  1235. from

  1236. all

  1237. over

  1238. Israel

  1239. to

  1240. meet

  1241. me

  1242. on

  1243. Mount

  1244. Carmel

  1245. bring

  1246. the

  1247. 450

  1248. prophets

  1249. of

  1250. Baal

  1251. the

  1252. 400

  1253. prophets

  1254. of

  1255. Asherah

  1256. who

  1257. eat

  1258. at

  1259. Jezebel's

  1260. table

  1261. and what

  1262. we're

  1263. going to

  1264. see

  1265. next

  1266. week

  1267. is that

  1268. the

  1269. one

  1270. true

  1271. God

  1272. is

  1273. going

  1274. to

  1275. be

  1276. revealed

  1277. the

  1278. one

  1279. true

  1280. God

  1281. is

  1282. going

  1283. to

  1284. get

  1285. glory

  1286. for

  1287. himself

  1288. but

  1289. what

  1290. we

  1291. see

  1292. in

  1293. Ahab

  1294. in

  1295. many ways

  1296. like

  1297. Pharaoh

  1298. before

  1299. him

  1300. is a

  1301. king

  1302. who

  1303. is

  1304. hard

  1305. hearted

  1306. he

  1307. hears

  1308. God's

  1309. word

  1310. very

  1311. clearly

  1312. and

  1313. he

  1314. wants

  1315. nothing

  1316. to

  1317. do

  1318. with

  1319. it

  1320. and

  1321. because

  1322. of

  1323. that

  1324. he

  1325. comes

  1326. under

  1327. God's

  1328. judgment

  1329. and

  1330. God

  1331. is

  1332. going

  1333. to

  1334. use

  1335. that

  1336. judgment

  1337. as

  1338. part

  1339. of

  1340. his

  1341. purpose

  1342. to

  1343. display

  1344. his

  1345. greater

  1346. power

  1347. and

  1348. authority

  1349. ultimately

  1350. to show

  1351. to

  1352. Israel

  1353. to show

  1354. to Ahab

  1355. and to

  1356. show

  1357. to us

  1358. that

  1359. it's

  1360. God's

  1361. word

  1362. it's

  1363. God's

  1364. actions

  1365. that

  1366. demonstrate

  1367. that

  1368. he

  1369. and

  1370. he

  1371. alone

  1372. deserves

  1373. our

  1374. worship

  1375. as

  1376. we

  1377. close

  1378. a

  1379. couple

  1380. of

  1381. implications

  1382. from

  1383. Ahab

  1384. and

  1385. this

  1386. part

  1387. of

  1388. the

  1389. story

  1390. first

  1391. to

  1392. recognize

  1393. that

  1394. the

  1395. church

  1396. needs

  1397. a

  1398. prophetic

  1399. voice

  1400. part

  1401. of

  1402. our

  1403. calling

  1404. as

  1405. the

  1406. church

  1407. of

  1408. God

  1409. is

  1410. to

  1411. speak

  1412. clearly

  1413. against

  1414. what

  1415. is

  1416. evil

  1417. and

  1418. against

  1419. what

  1420. is

  1421. unjust

  1422. that

  1423. we

  1424. take

  1425. what

  1426. we

  1427. understand

  1428. about

  1429. God's

  1430. character

  1431. about

  1432. the

  1433. horrors

  1434. of sin

  1435. that we

  1436. discover

  1437. in the

  1438. Bible

  1439. and we

  1440. apply

  1441. them to

  1442. our

  1443. current

  1444. context

  1445. and so

  1446. the

  1447. church

  1448. needs

  1449. to be

  1450. able

  1451. to

  1452. speak

  1453. clearly

  1454. to

  1455. acknowledge

  1456. where

  1457. injustice

  1458. and evil

  1459. is

  1460. happening

  1461. whether

  1462. that's

  1463. human

  1464. trafficking

  1465. whether

  1466. that's

  1467. the

  1468. evil

  1469. of

  1470. the

  1471. porn

  1472. industry

  1473. whether

  1474. it's

  1475. the

  1476. evil

  1477. of

  1478. the

  1479. euthanasia

  1480. bill

  1481. each

  1482. of

  1483. these

  1484. when you

  1485. think

  1486. about

  1487. it

  1488. is

  1489. a

  1490. devaluing

  1491. of

  1492. people

  1493. made

  1494. in the

  1495. image

  1496. of

  1497. God

  1498. and so

  1499. the

  1500. church

  1501. must

  1502. always

  1503. have

  1504. that

  1505. prophetic

  1506. voice

  1507. and the

  1508. wisdom

  1509. to know

  1510. how to

  1511. speak

  1512. God's

  1513. timeless

  1514. truth

  1515. into

  1516. our

  1517. ever

  1518. changing

  1519. world

  1520. but at

  1521. the

  1522. same

  1523. time

  1524. our

  1525. voice

  1526. must

  1527. also

  1528. speak

  1529. the

  1530. gospel

  1531. we

  1532. speak

  1533. judgment

  1534. and

  1535. salvation

  1536. like

  1537. the

  1538. gospel

  1539. does

  1540. recognizing

  1541. that our

  1542. culture

  1543. has a

  1544. lot

  1545. confusion

  1546. or

  1547. this

  1548. morning

  1549. a

  1550. lot

  1551. of

  1552. anxiety

  1553. we

  1554. recognize

  1555. people

  1556. have

  1557. deep

  1558. longings

  1559. in

  1560. their

  1561. hearts

  1562. they're

  1563. looking

  1564. to

  1565. find

  1566. meaning

  1567. and

  1568. hope

  1569. and

  1570. purpose

  1571. we

  1572. are

  1573. invited

  1574. as

  1575. the

  1576. people

  1577. of

  1578. God

  1579. to

  1580. speak

  1581. of

  1582. Jesus

  1583. the

  1584. way

  1585. the

  1586. truth

  1587. the

  1588. life

  1589. to

  1590. bring

  1591. good

  1592. news

  1593. in a

  1594. world

  1595. marked

  1596. by

  1597. hurt

  1598. and

  1599. confusion

  1600. but

  1601. also

  1602. each

  1603. one

  1604. of

  1605. us

  1606. needs

  1607. to

  1608. hear

  1609. and

  1610. to

  1611. respond

  1612. in

  1613. obedience

  1614. and

  1615. belief

  1616. to

  1617. Jesus

  1618. the

  1619. great

  1620. prophet

  1621. to

  1622. let

  1623. his

  1624. words

  1625. speak

  1626. unlike

  1627. Ahab

  1628. Jesus

  1629. is

  1630. the

  1631. good

  1632. king

  1633. he's

  1634. the

  1635. good

  1636. shepherd

  1637. so

  1638. concerned

  1639. for

  1640. his

  1641. people

  1642. in

  1643. our

  1644. spiritual

  1645. lostness

  1646. that he

  1647. both

  1648. lays

  1649. down

  1650. his

  1651. life

  1652. and he

  1653. calls

  1654. us

  1655. powerfully

  1656. to

  1657. himself

  1658. he

  1659. is

  1660. the

  1661. true

  1662. prophet

  1663. the

  1664. greater

  1665. than

  1666. Elijah

  1667. who

  1668. would

  1669. confront

  1670. and

  1671. who

  1672. would

  1673. conquer

  1674. the

  1675. forces

  1676. of

  1677. evil

  1678. at

  1679. the

  1680. cross

  1681. the

  1682. same

  1683. Jesus

  1684. who

  1685. began

  1686. his

  1687. ministry

  1688. saying

  1689. the

  1690. kingdom

  1691. of

  1692. God

  1693. is

  1694. near

  1695. repent

  1696. and

  1697. believe

  1698. the

  1699. good

  1700. news

  1701. the

  1702. one

  1703. whose

  1704. word

  1705. has

  1706. the

  1707. power

  1708. to

  1709. take

  1710. us

  1711. from

  1712. our

  1713. natural

  1714. hostility

  1715. or

  1716. indifference

  1717. to

  1718. God's

  1719. word

  1720. to

  1721. cause

  1722. us

  1723. to

  1724. hear

  1725. its

  1726. beauty

  1727. and

  1728. truth

  1729. and

  1730. life

  1731. giving

  1732. power

  1733. and

  1734. to

  1735. respond

  1736. with

  1737. God
