  1. We've got quite a long scripture reading today.

  2. We've got two different readings.

  3. ! One's quite long and then one's very short.

  4. The first one's from Genesis, the first book of the Bible.

  5. Near the end of that book, chapter 47, verses 29,

  6. and then into chapter 48 to verse 22.

  7. And then after I've read the big Genesis passage,

  8. I'm going to read a short passage from Hebrews.

  9. So there's Bibles at the back of the church.

  10. If you don't have a Bible,

  11. you're very free to get up and get one whenever you like.

  12. The words will also be on the screen,

  13. and they're in the bulletin.

  14. This is Genesis 47, 29 to 48, 22.

  15. And he said, Swear to me.

  16. And he swore to him.

  17. Then Israel bowed himself upon the head of his bed.

  18. After this, Joseph was told, Behold, your father is ill.

  19. So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

  20. And it was told to Jacob, Your son Joseph has come to you.

  21. Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed.

  22. And Jacob said to Joseph,

  23. God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the battle of Canaan,

  24. in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

  25. and said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you.

  26. And I will make of you a company of peoples,

  27. and will give this land to your offspring after you

  28. for an everlasting possession.

  29. And now your two sons who were born to you

  30. in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt are mine.

  31. Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine,

  32. as Reuben and Simeon are.

  33. And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours.

  34. They shall be called by the name of their brothers

  35. in their inheritance.

  36. As for me, when I came from Paddan,

  37. to my sorrow, Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way,

  38. when there was still some distance to go to Ephraim.

  39. And I buried her there on the way to Ephraim.

  40. Ephraim, that is Bethlehem.

  41. When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said,

  42. Who are these?

  43. And Joseph said to his father,

  44. They are my sons whom God has given me here.

  45. And he said, Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.

  46. Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age,

  47. so that he could not see.

  48. So Joseph brought them near him,

  49. and kissed him, and embraced them.

  50. And Israel said to Joseph,

  51. I never expected to see your face.

  52. And behold, God has let me see your offspring also.

  53. Then Joseph removed them from his knees,

  54. and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

  55. And Joseph took them both,

  56. Ephraim in his right, towards Israel's left hand,

  57. and Manasseh in his left hand towards Israel's right hand,

  58. and brought them near to him.

  59. And Israel stretched out his right hand

  60. and laid it on the head of Ephraim,

  61. who was the younger,

  62. and his left hand on the head of Manasseh,

  63. crossing his hands, for Manasseh was the firstborn.

  64. And he blessed Joseph and said,

  65. The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,

  66. the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,

  67. the angel who has redeemed me from all evil,

  68. bless the boys,

  69. and in them let my name be carried on,

  70. and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,

  71. and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

  72. When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand

  73. on the head of Ephraim,

  74. it displeased him.

  75. And he took his father's hand

  76. and moved it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head.

  77. And Joseph said to his father,

  78. Not this way, my father,

  79. since this one is the firstborn,

  80. but your right hand,

  81. put your right hand on his head.

  82. But his father refused and said,

  83. I know, my son, I know.

  84. He also shall become a people,

  85. and he also shall be great.

  86. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he,

  87. and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.

  88. So he blessed them that day,

  89. saying,

  90. By you, Israel,

  91. will pronounce blessings,

  92. saying,

  93. God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.

  94. Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

  95. Then Israel said to Joseph,

  96. Behold, I'm about to die,

  97. but your God will be with you

  98. and will bring you again to the land of your fathers.

  99. Moreover, I have given to you,

  100. rather than to your brothers,

  101. one mountain slope that I took

  102. from the hand of the Amorites

  103. with my sword and with my bow.

  104. And in Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11:20–22

  105. verses 20 to 22.

  106. By faith, Isaac invoked future blessings

  107. on Jacob and Esau.

  108. By faith, Jacob, when dying,

  109. blessed each of the sons of Joseph,

  110. bowing in worship over the head of his staff.

  111. By faith, Joseph, at the end of his life,

  112. made mention of the exodus of the Israelites

  113. and gave direction concerning his bones.

  114. Well, as Chris indicated,

  115. we're working our way through Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  116. and we come this evening to verses 20, 21, and 22.

  117. By faith, Isaac invoked future blessings

  118. on Jacob and Esau.

  119. By faith, Jacob, when dying,

  120. blessed each of the sons of Joseph,

  121. bowing in worship over the head of his staff.

  122. By faith, Joseph, at the end of his life,

  123. made mention of the exodus of the Israelites

  124. and gave directions concerning his bones.

  125. It's been described as one of the most compelling works

  126. of Christian devotion, published in 1650.

  127. The Saints' Everlasting Rest

  128. by the Puritan minister Richard Baxter.

  129. Baxter is a book that has really stood the test of time.

  130. That's not true of all Baxter's writings.

  131. But it was written when Baxter himself was gravely ill

  132. and thought he should die.

  133. He was in his early 30s, I think around 31,

  134. and he began to write his own funeral sermon,

  135. a gathering of his final thoughts

  136. to preach to himself as death approached.

  137. He told his parishioners at Kidderminster,

  138. far from home, cast into extreme languishing

  139. by the sudden loss of about a gallon of blood,

  140. I bent my thoughts on my everlasting rest.

  141. And the book is essentially a reflection

  142. on the text of Hebrews 4 verse 9.

    Hebrews 4:9

  143. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.

  144. It's a book about the glory of heaven.

  145. Or as it states on the title page,

  146. a treatise of the blessed state of the saints

  147. in their enjoyment of God in glory.

  148. And Baxter encourages his readers

  149. to think and meditate often

  150. on the delights and pleasures

  151. of the new heaven and earth.

  152. Our everlasting comfort is to be found

  153. in the enjoyment and possession

  154. of the living God.

  155. And it's perhaps hard to think

  156. of anything more counter-cultural than that.

  157. For thoughts of heaven and glory

  158. are remarkably rare in the contemporary church.

  159. Bruce Mill, a Scottish Baptist minister,

  160. wrote these words,

  161. This is a serious situation

  162. because Christianity,

  163. as reflected in the foundational documents

  164. of the New Testament,

  165. is consistently orientated

  166. towards its heavenly hope.

  167. If I can put it this way,

  168. the life of faith

  169. is always the life of heavenly hope.

  170. And that's part of what we see

  171. in our text this evening.

  172. Hebrews 11, verses 20 through 22,

    Hebrews 11:20–22

  173. our attention is drawn

  174. to the immediate descendants of Abraham,

  175. Isaac, Jacob, and then Joseph.

  176. Indeed, their stories run

  177. in the book of Genesis,

  178. from Genesis 21

  179. to the death of Joseph in Genesis 50,

  180. over half the book.

  181. And yet, surprisingly,

  182. in this great chapter

  183. that's all about faith,

  184. living by faith,

  185. the author of Hebrews

  186. chooses to highlight

  187. not Isaac's willingness,

  188. as Chris reminded us last week,

  189. to be laid on the altar

  190. as a sacrifice,

  191. nor Jacob's wrestling with God

  192. at the Jabbok River,

  193. nor Joseph's resisting of temptation

  194. in the house of Potiphar.

  195. These great dramatic acts of faith

  196. are not his focus.

  197. Instead, to illustrate faith,

  198. our author takes us to three scenes

  199. at the close of these individuals'

  200. earthly lives.

  201. He was wanting to show us

  202. how these men faced death,

  203. how they persevered

  204. in the life of faith

  205. to the very end.

  206. They each continued

  207. to hold on to

  208. the promise of God.

  209. In verse 13 of the chapter,

  210. he says,

  211. these all died in faith,

  212. not having received

  213. the things promised,

  214. but having seen them

  215. and greeted them

  216. from afar,

  217. and having acknowledged

  218. that they were strangers

  219. and exiles on earth.

  220. And so, what we have

  221. in these verses

  222. are three very brief portraits

  223. of mature faith.

  224. Three men looking forward

  225. in faith,

  226. trusting in God's promises

  227. right to the end

  228. of their lives.

  229. Here are these men

  230. looking to the future

  231. with God.

  232. And as we consider

  233. these verses tonight,

  234. let me highlight

  235. three things

  236. about their forward-looking faith.

  237. Their faith in the future

  238. that God had for them

  239. and their descendants.

  240. And the first thing

  241. I want you to notice with me

  242. is that their faith

  243. is faith in the God

  244. of surprising ways.

  245. By faith, we're told,

  246. Isaac invoked future blessings

  247. on Jacob and Esau.

  248. And so, the writer's

  249. taking us back

  250. to Genesis chapter 27,

    Genesis 27 chapter mention

  251. those events surrounding

  252. the blessing of Jacob and Esau.

  253. Both these sons are blessed.

  254. But it's a famous story

  255. because Isaac is deceived

  256. in that story

  257. into giving Jacob

  258. the primary blessing

  259. rather than Isaac's eldest son, Esau.

  260. Back in Genesis 25,

  261. God speaks to Rebekah, Isaac's wife.

  262. Two nations are in your womb.

  263. Two peoples from within you

  264. shall be divided.

  265. The one shall be stronger

  266. than the other.

  267. The older shall serve the younger.

  268. That's Genesis 25-23.

  269. And this is what God

  270. decreed would happen.

  271. That's a kind of reversal

  272. of social and cultural expectation.

  273. It's a reminder

  274. that God Himself

  275. does not conform Himself

  276. to human standards

  277. or conventions.

  278. And as the story unfolds,

  279. Isaac pursues really

  280. his own agenda.

  281. Esau is his firstborn,

  282. his favorite.

  283. Tradition demanded

  284. that he would receive

  285. what was known

  286. as the birthright,

  287. receiving a double portion

  288. of the inheritance,

  289. assuming leadership

  290. of the family

  291. upon the father's death.

  292. But as the story again

  293. is unfolds,

  294. Esau despised that birthright

  295. and sold it to Jacob

  296. for a bowl of stew.

  297. But despite that,

  298. Isaac resolves

  299. to formally bless Esau

  300. before he dies.

  301. And he really acts

  302. in rebellion

  303. against what God

  304. had decreed.

  305. It appears not a very

  306. good example of faith

  307. because his actions

  308. really fly in the face

  309. of what God

  310. has revealed to him.

  311. He chooses to do things

  312. His way.

  313. The blessing must go

  314. to the eldest, Esau.

  315. But God, of course,

  316. has other ideas.

  317. And through a combination

  318. in Genesis 27

  319. of Isaac's poor eyesight,

  320. Rebekah and Jacob's machinations,

  321. Isaac is deceived

  322. into blessing Jacob

  323. rather than Esau.

  324. When Esau eventually

  325. appears on the scene,

  326. it's too late.

  327. We read in Genesis 27, 33,

  328. Isaac trembled

  329. very violently and said,

  330. Who was it then

  331. that hunted game

  332. and brought it to me?

  333. And I ate it all

  334. before you came

  335. and I have blessed him.

  336. Yes, and he shall be blessed.

  337. Isaac's eyes were dim,

  338. but even he could see

  339. the providence of God.

  340. In Genesis 27,

  341. he doesn't revoke

  342. that blessing.

  343. He doesn't renounce Jacob.

  344. He doesn't express

  345. any condemnation.

  346. He makes no actual attempt

  347. to change anything.

  348. He simply accepts

  349. what God has done.

  350. Because he's been outwitted,

  351. not by Rebekah and Jacob,

  352. but by God.

  353. The God of surprising ways.

  354. This is what God

  355. had decreed would happen.

  356. And this is the mysterious

  357. will of God.

  358. Isaac doesn't argue about it.

  359. He simply accepts it.

  360. His accidental blessing

  361. of Jacob is repeated

  362. in a more willing fashion

  363. in the following chapter.

  364. Chapter 28,

  365. God Almighty,

  366. Isaac tells Jacob,

  367. God Almighty,

  368. bless you,

  369. make you fruitful,

  370. multiply you,

  371. that you may become

  372. a company of peoples.

  373. May he give the blessing

  374. of Abraham to you,

  375. to your offspring with you,

  376. that you may take possession

  377. of the land

  378. of your sojournings

  379. that God gave to Abraham.

  380. And so,

  381. against the social convention

  382. of his day,

  383. even against his own

  384. inclinations,

  385. Isaac comes to

  386. willingly bless

  387. the younger

  388. before the older.

  389. And that is faith.

  390. Because it recognizes

  391. that God is God.

  392. That he works

  393. in his own way.

  394. His plans and purposes

  395. cannot be thwarted.

  396. He can be trusted

  397. to accomplish his purposes

  398. even when things

  399. don't go according

  400. to our plans.

  401. And that is something

  402. that we come to learn

  403. in the life of faith.

  404. God fulfills his promises

  405. in his own way.

  406. Abraham is promised

  407. to be the father

  408. of a great nation.

  409. His wife, Sarah,

  410. is barren.

  411. She can have no children.

  412. Well, I don't think

  413. it could be made

  414. any clearer

  415. that the fulfillment

  416. of this promise

  417. lies really

  418. in God's hands alone.

  419. The family line

  420. would be expected,

  421. of course,

  422. to come through

  423. the firstborn male,

  424. but instead it's,

  425. instead of Ishmael,

  426. it's Isaac.

  427. Instead of Esau,

  428. it's Jacob.

  429. Instead of Reuben,

  430. it's Joseph.

  431. Because he is the God

  432. of surprising ways.

  433. And we see this

  434. in the following verse,

  435. which references

  436. and which Chris read for us,

  437. Jacob blessing

  438. the sons of Joseph

  439. in Genesis 48.

  440. By faith,

  441. Jacob,

  442. when dying,

  443. blessed each

  444. of the sons of Joseph.

  445. And in that chapter,

  446. as we read it,

  447. while the act of blessing

  448. was taking place,

  449. Jacob crosses his hands

  450. and blesses Ephraim,

  451. the younger,

  452. before Manasseh,

  453. the older.

  454. And this is God's choice.

  455. This choosing

  456. of the younger brother

  457. is really a pattern,

  458. a motif,

  459. that we see right

  460. throughout Genesis

  461. and indeed

  462. in many other parts

  463. of the Bible.

  464. Because God is not bound

  465. by human convention

  466. and man-made tradition.

  467. He is a God

  468. of surprising ways.

  469. His hands often bless

  470. the most surprising

  471. of people.

  472. He chooses David

  473. above his brothers.

  474. He chooses

  475. a persecutor Saul

  476. to become an apostle

  477. and a missionary

  478. to the Gentiles.

  479. You never know

  480. what God will do

  481. in one sense.

  482. We look to Manasseh,

  483. and God does a greater work

  484. through Ephraim.

  485. We look to the strong,

  486. God chooses the weak.

  487. Remember Paul's words

  488. to the church

  489. in Corinth,

  490. 1 Corinthians 1,

  491. Consider your calling,

  492. brothers.

  493. Not many of you

  494. were wise

  495. according to worldly standards.

  496. Not many were powerful.

  497. Not many were of noble birth.

  498. But God chose

  499. what is foolish

  500. in the world

  501. to shame the wise.

  502. God chose

  503. what is weak

  504. in the world

  505. to shame the strong.

  506. God chose

  507. what is low

  508. and despised

  509. in the world,

  510. even things that are not,

  511. to bring to nothing

  512. things that are,

  513. so that no human being

  514. might boast

  515. in the presence

  516. of God.

  517. No human being

  518. can boast

  519. in the presence

  520. of God.

  521. Because here is the God

  522. who overturns

  523. human expectations.

  524. God's blessings

  525. do not come

  526. by right

  527. or privilege

  528. or status

  529. or rank,

  530. but only by grace

  531. and only through faith.

  532. There is never

  533. any place

  534. in the Christian church

  535. for this idea

  536. of Christian celebrity

  537. or status.

  538. That's a lesson

  539. that often can be

  540. a long time

  541. in the learning.

  542. God is always faithful,

  543. but He

  544. is not always

  545. predictable.

  546. And His plans

  547. and purposes

  548. are often,

  549. are always far better

  550. than we can think

  551. or imagine.

  552. Put your faith,

  553. put your future

  554. in the hand

  555. of the God

  556. of surprising ways.

  557. And then secondly,

  558. faith not just

  559. in the God

  560. of surprising ways,

  561. but faith

  562. in the God

  563. of goodness

  564. and grace.

  565. By faith,

  566. Jacob,

  567. when dying,

  568. verse 21,

  569. blessed each

  570. of the sons

  571. of Joseph,

  572. bowing in worship

  573. over the head

  574. of his staff.

  575. And that initial

  576. reference is again

  577. Genesis 48,

  578. Jacob blessing

  579. the sons of Joseph.

  580. And we're told

  581. that when Israel

  582. saw Joseph's sons,

  583. we read in verse 8

  584. of chapter 48

  585. of Genesis,

  586. who are these?

  587. Joseph says,

  588. these are my sons

  589. whom God has given

  590. me here.

  591. Bring them to me

  592. that I may bless them.

  593. The eyes of Israel

  594. were dim with age.

  595. He could not see.

  596. Joseph brought them

  597. near him.

  598. He kissed them.

  599. He embraced them.

  600. And Israel said to Joseph,

  601. I never expected

  602. to see your face.

  603. And behold,

  604. God has let me see

  605. your offspring also.

  606. There's something,

  607. there's a wonderfully

  608. moving scene.

  609. Jacob, this old man,

  610. at the end of his life,

  611. his eyesight diminished.

  612. He kisses and embraces

  613. these grandsons.

  614. It's a scene that Jacob

  615. could not have imagined

  616. in his wildest dreams.

  617. Not only had he been reunited

  618. with his lost son, Joseph,

  619. whom he had thought

  620. had been killed,

  621. he also has this opportunity

  622. to see and to know

  623. Manasseh and Ephraim.

  624. I never expected

  625. to see your face.

  626. And behold,

  627. God has let me see

  628. your offspring also.

  629. These two sons,

  630. a gift of God

  631. to Joseph in Egypt,

  632. are now blessed by Jacob.

  633. They're formally welcomed

  634. into the covenant family.

  635. It's all a wonderful

  636. surprise to Jacob.

  637. It's almost one of these things,

  638. almost feels too good

  639. to be true.

  640. Because for years,

  641. Jacob's life had been marred

  642. by pain and loss and grief,

  643. and now in an unexpected way,

  644. he had received back

  645. not only his son, Joseph,

  646. but his sons also.

  647. It's a reminder

  648. of the goodness of God.

  649. And of course,

  650. God is good all the time.

  651. And He is good

  652. even when things

  653. are not good

  654. in our lives.

  655. I came across

  656. these words of Corrie ten Boom

  657. in her book,

  658. The Hiding Place.

  659. And she writes this,

  660. Often I have heard people say

  661. how good God is.

  662. We prayed that it would not

  663. rain for our church picnic

  664. and look at the lovely weather.

  665. And yes,

  666. God is good

  667. when He sends good weather.

  668. But God was also good

  669. when He allowed

  670. my sister Betsy

  671. to starve to death

  672. before my eyes

  673. in a German concentration camp.

  674. I remember one occasion

  675. I was very discouraged.

  676. Everything around us

  677. was dark.

  678. Darkness in my heart.

  679. I remember telling Betsy

  680. that I thought

  681. God had forgotten us.

  682. No, Corrie, said Betsy.

  683. He's not forgotten us.

  684. Remember His word.

  685. As the heavens

  686. are high above the earth,

  687. so great is His steadfast love

  688. towards those

  689. who fear Him.

  690. There is an ocean

  691. of God's love available.

  692. There's plenty for everyone.

  693. May God grant you

  694. never to doubt

  695. that victorious love

  696. whenever the circumstances.

  697. And sometimes

  698. that goodness

  699. tastes all the sweeter

  700. after a time

  701. of sadness

  702. and sorrow.

  703. Some of you

  704. might know the story

  705. of the poet,

  706. hymn writer

  707. William Cooper.

  708. Throughout his life

  709. he was plagued

  710. by persistent,

  711. devastating,

  712. at times suicidal depression.

  713. And he wrote

  714. these words.

  715. Sometimes a light

  716. surprises

  717. the Christian

  718. while he sings.

  719. It is the Lord

  720. who rises

  721. with healing

  722. in His wings.

  723. When comforts

  724. are declining

  725. He grants

  726. the soul again

  727. a season

  728. of clear shining

  729. to cheer it

  730. after rain.

  731. And friends

  732. we all know

  733. that sometimes

  734. life is full

  735. of dark moments.

  736. Those kind of moments

  737. when God seems

  738. either far away

  739. or absolutely absent.

  740. When we question things.

  741. We wonder

  742. if God is hiding

  743. from us.

  744. And the truth is

  745. we cannot always

  746. see the big picture.

  747. And that is why

  748. the light

  749. sometimes surprises us.

  750. The shadows

  751. of this life

  752. can be so dark

  753. that when God

  754. even for a brief moment

  755. chooses to step out

  756. of the shadows

  757. and to pull back

  758. heaven's curtain

  759. and let us

  760. let a glimpse

  761. of glory shine

  762. into our dark existence.

  763. We blink our eyes

  764. and we strain

  765. at it.

  766. Like somebody

  767. suddenly turning

  768. on the light

  769. when we're fumbling

  770. around in a dark room.

  771. Yes it's welcome

  772. but at the same time

  773. it can be

  774. disorientating.

  775. And our God

  776. delights to surprise us

  777. with His goodness

  778. and grace.

  779. He gives us

  780. unexpected gifts.

  781. Periods of refreshment

  782. and encouragement

  783. to lift our spirits.

  784. To generate a deep

  785. sense of love

  786. and gratitude

  787. in our hearts.

  788. Here is Jacob

  789. the schemer

  790. the deceiver

  791. the grabber.

  792. Spent a lifetime

  793. manipulating things

  794. to his own advantage.

  795. Usually with

  796. disastrous results.

  797. grace.

  798. And he's humbled

  799. and he's bowed down

  800. in thankfulness

  801. to God

  802. for all His goodness

  803. and grace to Him.

  804. What wonderful words

  805. of blessing

  806. he utters.

  807. The God

  808. before whom

  809. my fathers

  810. Abraham and Isaac

  811. walked.

  812. The God

  813. who has been

  814. my shepherd

  815. all my life

  816. long to this day.

  817. The angels

  818. who redeemed me

  819. from all evil

  820. bless the boys

  821. and in them

  822. let my name

  823. be carried on.

  824. It is a scene

  825. full of wonder

  826. and gratitude.

  827. Jacob's heart

  828. is full of faith

  829. in God's goodness

  830. and grace.

  831. His name

  832. his family

  833. his faith

  834. will carry on

  835. long after

  836. he is gone.

  837. He confesses

  838. the Lord

  839. as his shepherd.

  840. Here is the one

  841. who can restore

  842. our souls.

  843. Lead us in paths

  844. of righteousness

  845. for His name's sake.

  846. The one who

  847. in the dark valleys

  848. of life

  849. presences

  850. Himself with us

  851. and comforts us.

  852. The one who

  853. makes our cup

  854. to overflow

  855. and pursues us

  856. with goodness

  857. and mercy

  858. all our days.

  859. The one who

  860. will take us

  861. to dwell with Him

  862. in His house

  863. forever.

  864. And that's why

  865. Jacob is found

  866. worshipping over

  867. the head of his staff

  868. the end of his life.

  869. He's leaning

  870. upon the Lord

  871. his shepherd.

  872. The reference there

  873. Genesis 47-31

  874. Israel bowed

  875. himself upon

  876. the head of his bed.

  877. The slightly

  878. different translation

  879. of the Hebrew.

  880. But the point

  881. is the same.

  882. At the end

  883. of his life

  884. Jacob rejoices

  885. in God

  886. and in all

  887. his goodness

  888. and grace.

  889. May that be true

  890. of us also.

  891. It's a wonderful

  892. thing

  893. to see Christian

  894. men and women

  895. who through grace

  896. become more

  897. thankful over

  898. the years.

  899. Not grumpy

  900. but full of

  901. gratitude.

  902. Not cynical

  903. critical

  904. negative

  905. but full of

  906. love and mercy.

  907. Not full of

  908. themselves

  909. but always

  910. striving to

  911. bless others.

  912. Not full of

  913. pride

  914. but humility.

  915. Not full of

  916. worry

  917. but worship.

  918. Faith in the

  919. God of surprising

  920. ways.

  921. Faith in the

  922. God of goodness

  923. grace.

  924. And then

  925. faith

  926. quickly and

  927. briefly here

  928. in the God

  929. of covenant

  930. promise.

  931. By faith

  932. Joseph at

  933. the end

  934. of his

  935. life

  936. made mention

  937. of the

  938. exodus

  939. of the

  940. Israelites

  941. and gave

  942. directions

  943. concerning

  944. his bones.

  945. These are

  946. the reference

  947. to the

  948. closing

  949. verses

  950. of the

  951. book of

  952. Genesis.

  953. And Joseph

  954. said to his

  955. brothers

  956. I'm about

  957. to die

  958. but God

  959. will visit

  960. you

  961. and bring

  962. you up

  963. out of

  964. this land

  965. to the

  966. land

  967. that he

  968. swore

  969. to

  970. Abraham

  971. Isaac

  972. and

  973. Jacob.

  974. Joseph

  975. made the

  976. sons of

  977. Israel

  978. swear

  979. God

  980. will

  981. surely

  982. visit

  983. you

  984. and

  985. you

  986. shall

  987. carry

  988. up

  989. my

  990. bones

  991. from

  992. here.

  993. Joseph

  994. faced

  995. death

  996. believing

  997. in the

  998. promise

  999. of God.

  1000. When

  1001. everything

  1002. else

  1003. in life

  1004. was

  1005. disappearing

  1006. from

  1007. view

  1008. he

  1009. held

  1010. on

  1011. to

  1012. God's

  1013. promise.

  1014. He

  1015. knew

  1016. that

  1017. God

  1018. would

  1019. keep

  1020. his

  1021. promise.

  1022. He

  1023. knew

  1024. that

  1025. God

  1026. would

  1027. not

  1028. let

  1029. his

  1030. people

  1031. down.

  1032. He

  1033. knew

  1034. that

  1035. nothing

  1036. could

  1037. stop

  1038. the

  1039. plan

  1040. and

  1041. purpose

  1042. of

  1043. God.

  1044. God

  1045. will

  1046. surely

  1047. visit

  1048. you.

  1049. You

  1050. shall

  1051. carry

  1052. up

  1053. my

  1054. bones

  1055. from

  1056. here.

  1057. Of course

  1058. at the

  1059. time

  1060. none of

  1061. that

  1062. looked

  1063. very

  1064. likely.

  1065. But

  1066. Joseph

  1067. refused

  1068. to be

  1069. conformed

  1070. to the

  1071. pattern

  1072. of

  1073. Egypt

  1074. and

  1075. this

  1076. world.

  1077. He

  1078. was

  1079. sure

  1080. of what

  1081. he

  1082. hoped

  1083. !

  1084. He

  1085. was

  1086. certain

  1087. of

  1088. what

  1089. he

  1090. could

  1091. not

  1092. see.

  1093. And

  1094. to

  1095. him

  1096. the

  1097. promises

  1098. of

  1099. God

  1100. were

  1101. more

  1102. real

  1103. than

  1104. all

  1105. the

  1106. treasures

  1107. of

  1108. Egypt.

  1109. Because

  1110. Egypt

  1111. was

  1112. not

  1113. his

  1114. home.

  1115. His

  1116. home lay

  1117. elsewhere

  1118. in the

  1119. land of

  1120. promise.

  1121. It lay

  1122. in that

  1123. better

  1124. country.

  1125. And

  1126. yes,

  1127. surrounded

  1128. by the

  1129. wealth

  1130. of

  1131. Egypt,

  1132. perhaps

  1133. he could

  1134. have

  1135. erected

  1136. some

  1137. great

  1138. monument,

  1139. a

  1140. pyramid

  1141. to

  1142. rival

  1143. Pharaohs.

  1144. But

  1145. instead

  1146. he

  1147. says

  1148. to

  1149. his

  1150. brothers,

  1151. take

  1152. my

  1153. bones

  1154. with

  1155. you.

  1156. Because

  1157. his

  1158. hope

  1159. lay

  1160. in

  1161. God's

  1162. word.

  1163. And

  1164. he

  1165. knew

  1166. that

  1167. God

  1168. would

  1169. never

  1170. abandon

  1171. his

  1172. people.

  1173. Because

  1174. when

  1175. God

  1176. starts

  1177. something,

  1178. he

  1179. is

  1180. absolutely

  1181. guaranteed

  1182. to carry

  1183. it

  1184. through.

  1185. He's

  1186. absolutely

  1187. guaranteed

  1188. to finish

  1189. it.

  1190. I

  1191. recall

  1192. those

  1193. words

  1194. David

  1195. Niven,

  1196. the

  1197. actor,

  1198. about

  1199. his

  1200. good

  1201. friend,

  1202. Errol

  1203. Flynn.

  1204. He

  1205. said,

  1206. you

  1207. can

  1208. count

  1209. on

  1210. Errol

  1211. Flynn.

  1212. He'll

  1213. always

  1214. let

  1215. you

  1216. down.

  1217. And

  1218. that

  1219. is

  1220. humanity

  1221. in a

  1222. nutshell.

  1223. But

  1224. not so

  1225. with

  1226. God.

  1227. He

  1228. cannot

  1229. break

  1230. his

  1231. word.

  1232. He's

  1233. utterly

  1234. faithful

  1235. and

  1236. dependable.

  1237. And

  1238. Joseph

  1239. believed

  1240. that God

  1241. would

  1242. keep

  1243. his

  1244. promise.

  1245. That

  1246. God

  1247. would

  1248. deliver

  1249. his

  1250. people

  1251. from

  1252. Egypt.

  1253. Take

  1254. them to

  1255. the

  1256. land

  1257. he had

  1258. promised

  1259. to

  1260. them.

  1261. Joseph

  1262. in a

  1263. sense

  1264. believed

  1265. that his

  1266. very

  1267. bones

  1268. had a

  1269. future.

  1270. He

  1271. had

  1272. in a

  1273. sense

  1274. a

  1275. resurrection

  1276. faith.

  1277. Long

  1278. after the

  1279. pyramids

  1280. of Egypt

  1281. had

  1282. crumbled

  1283. to dust,

  1284. he knew

  1285. his

  1286. very

  1287. bones

  1288. would

  1289. rise

  1290. from

  1291. the

  1292. soil

  1293. of

  1294. the

  1295. promised

  1296. land

  1297. and be

  1298. welcomed

  1299. into

  1300. that

  1301. city

  1302. with

  1303. foundations

  1304. whose

  1305. architect

  1306. and

  1307. builder

  1308. is

  1309. God.

  1310. His

  1311. words

  1312. are

  1313. a

  1314. reminder

  1315. that

  1316. this

  1317. world

  1318. is not

  1319. our

  1320. home.

  1321. And that

  1322. we are

  1323. pilgrims

  1324. here

  1325. destined

  1326. for a

  1327. better

  1328. country.

  1329. I wonder,

  1330. are you

  1331. living a

  1332. life of

  1333. heavenly

  1334. hope?

  1335. Where is

  1336. your

  1337. faith and

  1338. hope

  1339. anchored?

  1340. in the

  1341. comforts

  1342. of a

  1343. passing

  1344. world

  1345. or in

  1346. the

  1347. promises

  1348. of

  1349. God?

  1350. As

  1351. Joseph

  1352. looked

  1353. beyond

  1354. the

  1355. palaces

  1356. of

  1357. Egypt

  1358. to

  1359. that

  1360. city

  1361. with

  1362. foundations,

  1363. friends,

  1364. surely

  1365. so must

  1366. we.

  1367. Our

  1368. bank

  1369. accounts,

  1370. our

  1371. pension

  1372. pot,

  1373. our

  1374. careers,

  1375. our

  1376. plans,

  1377. they're

  1378. all

  1379. going to

  1380. turn to

  1381. dust.

  1382. Only

  1383. what God

  1384. has

  1385. promised

  1386. will

  1387. stand.

  1388. And that's

  1389. really all we

  1390. have to

  1391. hold on

  1392. to.

  1393. Remember

  1394. Jesus'

  1395. words,

  1396. John 14,

  1397. let not

  1398. your hearts

  1399. be troubled,

  1400. believe in

  1401. God,

  1402. believe also

  1403. in me.

  1404. In my

  1405. Father's

  1406. house are

  1407. many

  1408. rooms,

  1409. if it

  1410. were not

  1411. so,

  1412. would I

  1413. have told

  1414. you that

  1415. I go to

  1416. prepare a

  1417. place for

  1418. you?

  1419. And if

  1420. I go and

  1421. prepare a

  1422. place for

  1423. you,

  1424. I will

  1425. come again

  1426. and take

  1427. you to

  1428. myself,

  1429. that where

  1430. I am,

  1431. you may

  1432. be also.

  1433. I wonder

  1434. if we

  1435. believe that

  1436. this evening,

  1437. that God's

  1438. word is

  1439. surer than

  1440. the ground

  1441. beneath our

  1442. feet.

  1443. Do we

  1444. believe in

  1445. the one

  1446. in whom

  1447. all the

  1448. promises of

  1449. God are

  1450. yes and

  1451. amen?

  1452. Do we

  1453. believe in

  1454. the surprising

  1455. way of a

  1456. crucified

  1457. Savior,

  1458. in the

  1459. transforming

  1460. goodness and

  1461. grace of

  1462. Jesus?

  1463. Because,

  1464. of course,

  1465. it's not

  1466. Isaac and

  1467. Jacob and

  1468. Joseph that

  1469. are the

  1470. hero of

  1471. this text.

  1472. It's the

  1473. God in

  1474. whom they

  1475. trusted,

  1476. a God of

  1477. surprising

  1478. ways,

  1479. of goodness

  1480. and grace,

  1481. and of

  1482. sure and

  1483. certain

  1484. promise.

  1485. And he's

  1486. the only

  1487. one who

  1488. can bring

  1489. us comfort

  1490. and hope

  1491. in the

  1492. face of

  1493. death.

  1494. The good

  1495. news for

  1496. this broken

  1497. world,

  1498. enveloped in

  1499. darkness and

  1500. death,

  1501. is that

  1502. great enemy

  1503. death has

  1504. been

  1505. defeated.

  1506. And Jesus,

  1507. now clothed in

  1508. resurrection power,

  1509. is reconciling

  1510. sinners to

  1511. God.

  1512. He is the

  1513. only one who

  1514. can bring us

  1515. eternal

  1516. comfort.

  1517. We have

  1518. only one

  1519. hope in

  1520. life and

  1521. death,

  1522. Jesus Christ

  1523. crucified,

  1524. risen,

  1525. and coming

  1526. again.

  1527. And he

  1528. changes

  1529. everything,

  1530. even death.

  1531. The Christian

  1532. hope rests

  1533. on the

  1534. unshakable

  1535. ground of

  1536. Christ's

  1537. resurrection.

  1538. And yes,

  1539. we can

  1540. tremble at

  1541. death's

  1542. approach,

  1543. but the

  1544. sting is

  1545. gone.

  1546. The venom

  1547. drained from

  1548. the serpent's

  1549. bite.

  1550. And in

  1551. Jesus Christ,

  1552. death is no

  1553. longer a

  1554. doorway to

  1555. judgment,

  1556. but a

  1557. portal to

  1558. glory and

  1559. everlasting

  1560. rest.

  1561. Richard

  1562. Baxter

  1563. writes,

  1564. let us

  1565. never look

  1566. at the

  1567. grave,

  1568. except to

  1569. see the

  1570. resurrection

  1571. beyond it.

  1572. Faith is

  1573. quick-sighted

  1574. and can

  1575. see as

  1576. far as

  1577. that.

  1578. Yes,

  1579. even as

  1580. far as

  1581. eternity.

  1582. I wonder,

  1583. does your

  1584. faith see

  1585. that far?

  1586. What is

  1587. our hope

  1588. in life and

  1589. death?

  1590. Christ alone,

  1591. Christ alone.

  1592. What is

  1593. our only

  1594. confidence that

  1595. our souls to

  1596. Him belong?

  1597. Come to

  1598. Christ and

  1599. find rest,

  1600. eternal rest

  1601. for both

  1602. body and

  1603. soul.

  1604. Come to

  1605. Christ and

  1606. in Him and

  1607. by faith live

  1608. a life full

  1609. of heavenly

  1610. hope.

  1611. Let's

  1612. pray.

  1613. Lord, we

  1614. ask that our

  1615. faith might

  1616. rest not in

  1617. ourselves,

  1618. our confidence

  1619. not in

  1620. ourselves,

  1621. but in

  1622. you and

  1623. in the

  1624. Lord Jesus

  1625. Christ.

  1626. Lord, may

  1627. you strengthen

  1628. us by your

  1629. Holy Spirit.

  1630. May you

  1631. grant us

  1632. faith that

  1633. trusts your

  1634. ways even

  1635. though we

  1636. don't always

  1637. understand them,

  1638. that trusts that

  1639. you are indeed a

  1640. God of goodness

  1641. and grace,

  1642. and that trusts

  1643. your promises

  1644. above all

  1645. else.

  1646. Lord,

  1647. grant us

  1648. living faith

  1649. in the living

  1650. Lord Jesus

  1651. Christ, in

  1652. whose name we

  1653. pray these

  1654. things.

  1655. Amen.
