  1. I'm going to read from God's word now.

  2. We're going to read from Hebrews chapter 11, verses 29 to 31.

    Hebrews 11:29–31

  3. ! Just a short reading tonight.

  4. This is God's holy word.

  5. By faith, the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land,

  6. but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.

  7. By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down

  8. after they'd been encircled for seven days.

  9. By faith, Rahab the prostitute did not perish

  10. with those who were disobedient

  11. because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

  12. Amen. This is God's word.

  13. As Chris mentioned at the beginning of the service,

  14. we're moving towards the end of the series

  15. in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  16. Next week, God willing, Chris will look at the final verses

  17. of the chapter, and then the week after,

  18. God willing, I will look at the conclusion,

  19. which really is to be found in Hebrews 12

  20. and the first couple of verses there.

  21. And as we've made our way through this very famous chapter of the Bible,

  22. I think one of the recurring themes

  23. about living the life of faith

  24. is that it involves seeing or apprehending

  25. that which is invisible.

  26. Faith is the conviction of things not yet seen.

  27. Noah was warned by God about events unseen.

  28. Moses endured as seeing him who is invisible.

  29. And the author of Hebrews wants his readers

  30. to live their lives with their eyes,

  31. with the eyes of faith fixed upon the invisible God.

  32. He wants them to see that city with foundations

  33. whose architect and builder is God.

  34. He wants them to be looking forward

  35. to that promised reward

  36. that is theirs in Jesus Christ,

  37. but still yet to be realized.

  38. And this chapter, as we've seen,

  39. is all about traveling the way of faith.

  40. And according to our writer,

  41. faith is about looking beyond

  42. the limited horizons of this life

  43. to the living God.

  44. Many years ago, the Christian writer A.W. Tozer

  45. wrote these words.

  46. He said,

  47. In other words, for the Christian,

  48. faith is focused on God.

  49. He is the great object of our faith and trust,

  50. and we must not lose sight of Him.

  51. And so, as we make our way around

  52. this portrait gallery of faith,

  53. our author wants to draw our attention

  54. really to two key events

  55. involving the Exodus and the conquest of Canaan.

  56. And now, why is he doing that?

  57. He wants us to get God in focus.

  58. He wants us to be looking away from ourselves.

  59. He wants us to see in these great events

  60. the God whose power is made known

  61. amidst human weakness and frailty.

  62. These Hebrew Christians knew a great deal

  63. about human weakness and frailty.

  64. And our writer is trying to get them

  65. to look to God

  66. and to the God of power and majesty.

  67. So, what do we see of God

  68. in these verses before us tonight?

  69. Three verses,

  70. so it should be a short sermon.

  71. Well, maybe not.

  72. We'll see.

  73. What do we see of God in these verses?

  74. Let me highlight three things.

  75. Verse 29,

  76. Faith looks or sees the God of keeping power.

  77. Faith looks to the God of keeping power.

  78. By faith, the people crossed the Red Sea

  79. as on dry land,

  80. but the Egyptians,

  81. when they attempted to do the same,

  82. were drowned.

  83. So, the reference here in verse 29

  84. is back to the destruction of Pharaoh's army

  85. at the Red Sea,

  86. a passage we find in the book of Exodus

  87. and chapter 14.

  88. The people had fled from Egypt

  89. under Moses' leadership,

  90. but Pharaoh, who had allowed them to leave,

  91. changed his mind

  92. and sent out his army to pursue them

  93. and to bring them back.

  94. And in one sense,

  95. it is a strange illustration of faith

  96. because the Red Sea on the one side,

  97. the Egyptian army coming up on the other,

  98. when you read Exodus 14,

  99. it's not clear that the people of God

  100. demonstrate great confidence in God.

  101. In fact, in Exodus 14,

  102. we're told that they were not full of faith,

  103. but they were full of fear.

  104. So, in Exodus 14, verse 10,

    Exodus 14:10

  105. and following,

  106. you read these words.

  107. When Pharaoh drew near,

  108. the people of Israel lifted up their eyes

  109. and behold,

  110. the Egyptians were marching after them.

  111. They feared greatly.

  112. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord.

  113. They said to Moses,

  114. Is it because there are no graves in Egypt

  115. that you have taken us away

  116. to die in the wilderness?

  117. What have you done to us

  118. in bringing us out of Egypt?

  119. Is not this what we said to you in Egypt?

  120. Leave us alone

  121. that we may serve the Egyptians.

  122. For it would have been better

  123. for us to serve the Egyptians

  124. than to die in the wilderness.

  125. Moses said to the people,

  126. Fear not.

  127. Stand firm.

  128. See the salvation of the Lord,

  129. which He will work for you today.

  130. For the Egyptians whom you see today,

  131. you shall never see again.

  132. The Lord will fight for you,

  133. and you have only to be silent.

  134. The people are terrified.

  135. They are grumbling.

  136. They are complaining to Moses.

  137. And in turn,

  138. Moses tells them not to fear,

  139. but rather to stand firm.

  140. He reminds them

  141. that the Lord will fight for them.

  142. And that they,

  143. well,

  144. in colloquial terms,

  145. they should just shut up.

  146. Stop their complaining.

  147. So,

  148. in a sense,

  149. it's quite an unusual demonstration of faith,

  150. isn't it?

  151. People of Israel

  152. backed into a corner,

  153. almost left with no other option

  154. than to trust God.

  155. Only realistic option

  156. was to do

  157. as the Lord commanded them.

  158. So,

  159. it may not have been

  160. great faith

  161. that they demonstrated,

  162. but it was faith.

  163. It was a weak faith

  164. in a strong

  165. and powerful God.

  166. It's by faith

  167. that they passed through the Red Sea,

  168. and the Egyptian army

  169. was swallowed up

  170. and destroyed

  171. after them.

  172. And Exodus 14

  173. really is a passage

  174. all about

  175. the power of God

  176. to deliver His people,

  177. to accomplish His purposes.

  178. The power of God

  179. over His creation,

  180. and the power of God

  181. over His enemies.

  182. Exodus 14,

  183. 30 and 31,

  184. we read,

  185. Thus the Lord

  186. saved Israel that day

  187. from the hand

  188. of the Egyptians.

  189. And Israel saw

  190. the Egyptians

  191. dead on the seashore.

  192. Israel saw

  193. the great power

  194. that the Lord

  195. used against the Egyptians.

  196. So,

  197. the people feared the Lord,

  198. and they believed

  199. in the Lord,

  200. and in His servant,

  201. Moses.

  202. That's a passage,

  203. of course,

  204. that's referred to

  205. right throughout

  206. the Old Testament.

  207. Isaiah 63,

  208. the prophet there

  209. speaks of this

  210. as an event

  211. that brings honor

  212. and glory

  213. to God's name,

  214. a demonstration

  215. of God's

  216. sovereign power

  217. over all other

  218. gods and deities.

  219. Isaiah 63,

  220. 11,

  221. Then He remembered

  222. the days of old

  223. of Moses and His people.

  224. Where is He

  225. who brought them up

  226. out of the sea

  227. with the shepherds

  228. of His flock?

  229. Where is He

  230. who put in the midst

  231. of them His Holy Spirit?

  232. Who caused His glorious arm

  233. to go at the right hand

  234. of Moses?

  235. Who divided the waters

  236. before them

  237. to make for Himself

  238. an everlasting name

  239. who led them

  240. through the depths.

  241. So, this event

  242. is a demonstration

  243. of God's great power.

  244. But it's not

  245. to be understood

  246. as a kind of

  247. spectacular floor show.

  248. The context here

  249. is very important.

  250. Pharaoh regretted

  251. his decision

  252. to let the Hebrew slaves go.

  253. He wanted them back.

  254. And what was happening

  255. here in this event

  256. was a kind of contest

  257. about ownership.

  258. Who had the right

  259. to claim ownership

  260. of Israel?

  261. This genocidal king

  262. who'd enslaved them

  263. for years,

  264. who had long been

  265. their master,

  266. or their divine king,

  267. Yahweh,

  268. who had come to Egypt

  269. to claim,

  270. redeem,

  271. and deliver them?

  272. It's the future of Israel.

  273. It kind of hangs

  274. on that question.

  275. Who did they belong to?

  276. Did they belong to Pharaoh,

  277. or did they belong

  278. to Yahweh?

  279. And that question

  280. of ownership

  281. that we see here

  282. is still a pertinent

  283. one for us today.

  284. To whom do we belong?

  285. Who has the claim

  286. over your life?

  287. Who are you serving?

  288. Who are you following?

  289. Who are you worshiping?

  290. Yourself?

  291. The gods of this present age?

  292. The prince and ruler

  293. of this world?

  294. Or the one who is

  295. the God of keeping power?

  296. The one who has sent

  297. His only begotten Son

  298. into this world

  299. to claim you

  300. for Himself?

  301. Question one

  302. of the Heidelberg

  303. Catechism

  304. famously asks

  305. the question,

  306. what is your only comfort

  307. in life and death?

  308. And the answer it gives

  309. begins with these words,

  310. that I,

  311. with body and soul,

  312. both in life

  313. and in death,

  314. am not my own,

  315. but belong

  316. to my faithful Savior,

  317. Jesus Christ,

  318. who with His precious blood

  319. has fully satisfied

  320. for all my sins

  321. and redeemed me

  322. from all the power

  323. of the devil

  324. and so preserves me

  325. that without the will

  326. of my Father in heaven

  327. not a hair can fall

  328. from my head.

  329. You know,

  330. sometimes in the Christian life

  331. we can wonder,

  332. are we ever going to make it?

  333. I think the Hebrew Christians

  334. to whom our author

  335. was writing

  336. were struggling

  337. with that kind of issue.

  338. Sometimes we doubt

  339. we can keep it going.

  340. Have we got

  341. what it takes

  342. to endure?

  343. We're weak,

  344. we're fragile human beings.

  345. How can we make it

  346. to heaven?

  347. There's sin within,

  348. there's evil without.

  349. And the answer

  350. of the Bible

  351. is that God

  352. will keep us

  353. by His own power.

  354. He will guard us

  355. and keep us.

  356. He will preserve us

  357. because we are His.

  358. We belong to Him.

  359. Remember what Paul says

  360. to the Philippians

  361. in Philippians chapter 1 verse 6,

    Philippians 1:6

  362. I'm sure of this,

  363. that He who began

  364. a good work in you

  365. will bring it to completion

  366. at the day of Christ Jesus.

  367. By His mighty power,

  368. God keeps His people.

  369. And He does this through faith.

  370. He guards and keeps us

  371. through faith,

  372. not apart from faith.

  373. faith.

  374. And so,

  375. we must go on

  376. believing and trusting

  377. in Jesus Christ.

  378. This is why this letter

  379. has been written.

  380. God's power

  381. keeps us

  382. in Christ.

  383. And we must be confident

  384. and assured

  385. of that power

  386. that will keep us

  387. and preserve us

  388. for heaven.

  389. There's an old hymn,

  390. has the verse,

  391. He will keep me

  392. till the river

  393. rolls its waters

  394. at my feet.

  395. Then He'll bear me

  396. safely over

  397. all my joys

  398. in Him complete.

  399. He will not let us

  400. pass out of His ownership.

  401. He will keep us.

  402. He will keep us in life.

  403. He will keep us in death.

  404. Because He has redeemed us

  405. by the blood of the Lamb.

  406. The Lamb that has now

  407. been raised

  408. and exalted

  409. and given the name

  410. above every name,

  411. declared the Son of God

  412. in power

  413. through His resurrection

  414. from the dead.

  415. Remember Isaiah's words,

  416. Fear not,

  417. for I have redeemed you.

  418. I have called you by name.

  419. You are mine.

  420. When you pass through the waters,

  421. I will be with you.

  422. And through the rivers,

  423. they shall not overwhelm you.

  424. When you walk through the fire,

  425. you shall not be burned.

  426. And the flame shall not consume you.

  427. For I am the Lord,

  428. your God,

  429. the Holy One of Israel,

  430. your Savior.

  431. I gave Egypt as your ransom,

  432. Cush and Seba,

  433. in exchange for you.

  434. Because you are precious

  435. in my eyes

  436. and honored.

  437. And I love you.

  438. Faith looks to the God

  439. of keeping power.

  440. Brings me to the second thing here.

  441. And that is that faith looks

  442. to the God of transforming power.

  443. In verse 30.

  444. By faith,

  445. the walls of Jericho fell down

  446. after they had been encircled

  447. for seven days.

  448. So,

  449. the second event alluded to

  450. in these verses

  451. relates not to the Exodus,

  452. but to the conquest of Canaan.

  453. And in particular,

  454. to the fall of Jericho,

  455. which is detailed for us

  456. in Joshua chapter 6.

    Joshua 6 chapter mention

  457. Jericho was a highly fortified city.

  458. It was a city of huge strategic significance.

  459. It presented a great obstacle

  460. to Israel

  461. and to the leader Joshua

  462. as they sought to claim

  463. that the land

  464. that had been promised to them

  465. for God.

  466. The Jordan lay behind them.

  467. Jericho lay before them.

  468. And in Joshua chapter 6,

    Joshua 6:1

  469. verse 1,

  470. we're told this,

  471. that Jericho was barred

  472. and secured,

  473. tightly shut up.

  474. No one went out.

  475. No one came in.

  476. The city was a formidable barrier.

  477. Jericho's walls

  478. were apparently impregnable.

  479. And in their weakness,

  480. how could the Israelites

  481. prevail against this great defense

  482. of stronghold?

  483. How could this stronghold

  484. be demolished

  485. and the city taken?

  486. Well, by faith.

  487. By faith in the plan

  488. that God provided.

  489. And Joshua,

  490. we're told at the end

  491. of Joshua chapter 5,

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  492. has to bow the knee

  493. to the one

  494. who is the commander

  495. of the Lord's armies.

  496. And only then

  497. is he given

  498. God's strategy

  499. or plan.

  500. And it was a very unusual strategy.

  501. In fact,

  502. it appeared foolishness.

  503. It involved God's people,

  504. and you can read it there

  505. in Joshua chapter 6,

    Joshua 6 chapter mention

  506. traipsing around the city

  507. for six days.

  508. And then on the seventh day,

  509. they were to march

  510. around the city,

  511. not once,

  512. but seven times.

  513. And on that final tour

  514. of the city,

  515. the trumpet was to sound,

  516. the horn would sound,

  517. and the people would raise

  518. a great shout,

  519. and the walls would come

  520. tumbling down.

  521. And what Joshua and Israel

  522. were being shown

  523. is that by themselves,

  524. they could do nothing

  525. to conquer Jericho.

  526. Apart from God,

  527. they could do nothing.

  528. It's God

  529. who took the initiative.

  530. It's God

  531. who takes charge,

  532. really.

  533. And God

  534. who outlines

  535. a plan

  536. for taking the city.

  537. Joshua and Israel

  538. are called

  539. to submit themselves

  540. to God's ways.

  541. They're called

  542. to trust

  543. and obey.

  544. And at the heart

  545. of God's plan

  546. in Joshua chapter 6,

    Joshua 6 chapter mention

  547. central to it,

  548. was the Ark

  549. of the Covenant.

  550. It's a great symbol

  551. of God's presence

  552. and power

  553. with His people.

  554. In fact,

  555. I think in that passage

  556. it's mentioned

  557. around nine times.

  558. It was the Ark

  559. that was to be carried

  560. around the walls.

  561. And actually,

  562. when you read Joshua 6,

  563. the narrative

  564. underlines this point,

  565. that it's the Lord

  566. who delivers

  567. His people.

  568. It's the Lord

  569. of hosts,

  570. strong and mighty

  571. in battle

  572. who routes

  573. the enemy.

  574. It's the Lord,

  575. really,

  576. who encompasses

  577. the city.

  578. It's not Joshua

  579. who fits

  580. the battle

  581. of Jericho,

  582. but God.

  583. Sometimes,

  584. in life,

  585. God brings us

  586. to a point

  587. of helplessness

  588. so that we will

  589. utterly depend

  590. on Him.

  591. Sometimes,

  592. He boxes us in

  593. that,

  594. humanly speaking,

  595. there appears

  596. to be no way out.

  597. He brings us

  598. to an end

  599. of ourselves.

  600. That point

  601. where our own

  602. schemes and options

  603. have come to nothing.

  604. All we can do

  605. is cast ourselves

  606. on the Lord,

  607. brought to a place

  608. of utter weakness,

  609. so that we realize

  610. if we do make it through,

  611. it must be of God,

  612. all of grace,

  613. all of His power.

  614. And that hopeless

  615. situation can be

  616. one of many,

  617. many things.

  618. It can be

  619. crippling anxiety

  620. and stress,

  621. it can be a broken

  622. relationship,

  623. it can be a point

  624. where we can no longer

  625. escape or evade

  626. the consequences

  627. of our actions,

  628. it can be ill health,

  629. fear of the future,

  630. all sorts of things.

  631. But however it happens,

  632. we're brought to a point

  633. where we have

  634. no one else

  635. to turn to,

  636. and all we do

  637. is we can cry out

  638. to the living God

  639. for help.

  640. Now, of course,

  641. plans and strategies

  642. are not wrong,

  643. far from it.

  644. But they're not

  645. the most important thing,

  646. because on their own

  647. they achieve nothing

  648. of eternal value.

  649. God's work must be done

  650. in God's way.

  651. Obstacles,

  652. like Jericho,

  653. are never removed

  654. by mere human ingenuity

  655. and skill.

  656. Paul tells the Corinthians

  657. in 2 Corinthians 10,

    2 Corinthians 10:3

  658. verse 3 and 4,

  659. For though we walk

  660. in the flesh,

  661. we are not waging war

  662. according to the flesh,

  663. for the weapons

  664. of our warfare

  665. are not of the flesh,

  666. but have divine power

  667. to destroy strongholds.

  668. You see,

  669. there is a strategy

  670. that is foolishness

  671. to the world,

  672. but is God's way

  673. to victory.

  674. The foolishness of God

  675. is always wiser

  676. than man's wisdom.

  677. How has God's work progressed?

  678. Prayerful communion

  679. with God

  680. must always have

  681. a place of priority

  682. in the work of God.

  683. We've got that example

  684. in Exodus 17,

  685. the battle

  686. with the Amalekites

  687. at Rephidim.

  688. The battle raging below.

  689. Moses, Aaron, and her

  690. climb the hill above

  691. and they engage

  692. in prayerful intercession.

  693. Moses' hands are raised.

  694. And when he raises

  695. his hands in prayer,

  696. the Israelites prevail

  697. in the battle.

  698. And when they're lowered,

  699. the Amalekites then

  700. gain the ascendancy.

  701. The course of the battle

  702. determined not actually

  703. by the fighters on the field,

  704. but by the intercessors

  705. on the mountain.

  706. And prayer is an expression

  707. of our weakness

  708. and our need of God.

  709. And all through the Bible,

  710. we discover this.

  711. God choosing weak,

  712. fragile human vessels,

  713. clay pots,

  714. to display the excellency

  715. of His power.

  716. So it doesn't matter

  717. if it's an aged

  718. Abraham and Sarah,

  719. David with his sling,

  720. Elijah with his cloak,

  721. a wee boy with five loaves

  722. and two fishes.

  723. God delights to take

  724. that which is weak

  725. and fragile

  726. and so act with divine power

  727. that everyone will say,

  728. this must be the power of God.

  729. Paul says,

  730. we have this treasure

  731. in jars of clay

  732. to show that this

  733. all-surpassing power

  734. is from God

  735. and not from us.

  736. And the weapon of prayer

  737. is what God uses

  738. to bring down

  739. the strongholds

  740. of the enemy.

  741. Because in prayer,

  742. we express our abject frailty,

  743. human frailty,

  744. and need

  745. before a sovereign

  746. or powerful king.

  747. And it may appear foolish,

  748. stupid even.

  749. Yet it's through prayer

  750. that walls crumble

  751. and the strongholds

  752. of the enemy are defeated.

  753. This is God's way.

  754. He calls us to walk in it.

  755. He calls us to be a people

  756. looking to Him,

  757. depending on Him,

  758. praying to Him.

  759. He calls us to leave

  760. sometimes our own

  761. human methods

  762. and strategies

  763. of which we are so fond,

  764. and to take up His

  765. utter dependence

  766. on His presence

  767. and power,

  768. the way of weakness

  769. and the way of prayer.

  770. And this is how God delights

  771. not only to transform

  772. circumstances,

  773. but to transform ourselves.

  774. This is how He reveals

  775. His transforming power.

  776. He's the God of keeping power.

  777. Look to Him.

  778. He's the God of transforming power.

  779. Look to Him in prayer.

  780. And thirdly here,

  781. you'll notice He is the God

  782. of saving power.

  783. Verse 31,

  784. Faith looks to the God

  785. of saving power.

  786. By faith,

  787. Rahab, the prostitute,

  788. did not perish

  789. with those who were disobedient

  790. because she had given

  791. a friendly welcome

  792. to the spies.

  793. And this final reference here

  794. again relates to

  795. the fall of Jericho.

  796. This time it focuses

  797. on the salvation

  798. of the prostitute Rahab.

  799. We read about her.

  800. Yes, in Joshua chapter 6,

    Joshua 6 chapter mention

  801. but also a little earlier

  802. in Joshua chapter 2.

    Joshua 2 chapter mention

  803. And perhaps a foreign prostitute

  804. is not someone

  805. we would immediately think

  806. of being as a great example

  807. of faith,

  808. but nonetheless,

  809. that's what a writer does here.

  810. Rahab shielded

  811. and harbored

  812. the Israelite spies

  813. that came to Jericho

  814. to find out

  815. what the story was.

  816. And she did that

  817. at the risk of her own life.

  818. She welcomed them.

  819. She hid them

  820. from those who pursued them.

  821. She helped them

  822. make their escape.

  823. Why did she do that?

  824. Well, she did it

  825. because she received

  826. and believed

  827. their testimony.

  828. She had heard

  829. of the great things

  830. that the Lord

  831. had done

  832. for His people.

  833. And so,

  834. in Joshua chapter 2,

    Joshua 2:8

  835. verse 8 and following,

  836. this is what we read.

  837. Before the men lay down,

  838. she came up to them

  839. on the roof

  840. and said to the men,

  841. I know that the Lord

  842. has given you the land,

  843. that the fear of you

  844. has fallen upon us,

  845. that all the inhabitants

  846. of the land

  847. melt away before you.

  848. For we've heard

  849. how the Lord

  850. dried up the water

  851. of the Red Sea

  852. before you

  853. when you came out of Egypt,

  854. and what you did

  855. to the two kings

  856. of the Amorites

  857. beyond the Jordan,

  858. Sihon and Og,

  859. whom you devoted

  860. to destruction.

  861. As soon as we heard it,

  862. our hearts melted.

  863. There was no spirit

  864. left in any man

  865. because of you.

  866. For the Lord,

  867. your God,

  868. He is God

  869. in the heavens above

  870. and on the earth beneath.

  871. Now then,

  872. please swear to me

  873. by the Lord

  874. that as I have dealt

  875. kindly with you,

  876. you also will deal kindly

  877. with my Father's house.

  878. Give me a sure sign

  879. that you will save alive

  880. my father and mother,

  881. my brothers and sisters,

  882. and all who belong to them,

  883. and deliver our lives

  884. from death.

  885. And the men said to her,

  886. Our life for years

  887. even to death,

  888. if you do not tell

  889. this business of ours,

  890. then when the Lord

  891. gives us the land,

  892. we will deal kindly

  893. and faithfully with you.

  894. So, Rahab had heard

  895. of what God had done

  896. for His people,

  897. and she formed a conviction

  898. on the basis

  899. of what she'd heard,

  900. and she saw that it was

  901. the living God,

  902. the Maker of heaven

  903. and earth,

  904. and so she sought

  905. refuge in Him.

  906. She cast herself

  907. on His kindness

  908. and faithfulness,

  909. and in turn,

  910. the spies gave her,

  911. as the passage

  912. tells us a little later,

  913. a scarlet cord.

  914. That was to be tied

  915. to her window.

  916. Her house would become

  917. a place of refuge

  918. for all who took shelter there.

  919. And her household,

  920. in a sense,

  921. became a kind of island

  922. of salvation

  923. in the midst of this city

  924. under judgment.

  925. And the story of Rahab

  926. really stands out

  927. as a beacon

  928. of God's grace

  929. and saving power.

  930. She was one of the enemies

  931. of Israel.

  932. She was a pagan.

  933. She was a prostitute.

  934. And yet,

  935. in His grace

  936. and mercy,

  937. God brought her

  938. to faith

  939. and into

  940. God's covenant people.

  941. She and her people

  942. came to settle

  943. in Israel.

  944. On the opening page

  945. of the New Testament,

  946. Matthew 1, verse 5,

    Matthew 1:5

  947. we read her name

  948. as one included

  949. in the genealogy

  950. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  951. Who would have thought

  952. it possible?

  953. And her presence

  954. in that sacred genealogy

  955. is a reminder to us

  956. that Jesus

  957. has come to welcome

  958. sinners into His family.

  959. He's come

  960. to show

  961. and to demonstrate

  962. God's amazing grace.

  963. He has come

  964. to reveal

  965. the saving power

  966. of God.

  967. Sometimes,

  968. as human beings,

  969. we can be weighed down

  970. with a sense

  971. of our guilt,

  972. our unworthiness.

  973. sometimes,

  974. sometimes,

  975. we're rightly ashamed

  976. of things

  977. that we've said

  978. and done.

  979. Our lives,

  980. we know,

  981. are stained

  982. and unclean.

  983. They're dirty.

  984. How can people

  985. like us

  986. ever belong

  987. in God's family?

  988. How could God

  989. ever love us

  990. after the things

  991. we've done?

  992. We know,

  993. deep down,

  994. that we're not

  995. good enough for God,

  996. that we will never

  997. be good enough.

  998. I mean,

  999. how can Jesus

  1000. have anything

  1001. to do with us?

  1002. Why on earth

  1003. would He?

  1004. But friends,

  1005. that's why He came.

  1006. He came to be

  1007. the friend of sinners.

  1008. He came to welcome

  1009. people like us

  1010. into His fellowship,

  1011. into His family.

  1012. That's why the church

  1013. isn't a social club.

  1014. It's a hospital

  1015. for sinners.

  1016. It's a shelter

  1017. for refugees.

  1018. It's a family

  1019. for abandoned

  1020. outcasts.

  1021. for if our Lord

  1022. Jesus was happy

  1023. to associate

  1024. with someone

  1025. such as Rahab,

  1026. He is happy

  1027. even to associate

  1028. with someone

  1029. like you.

  1030. And that's

  1031. the power

  1032. of God's

  1033. amazing

  1034. and surprising

  1035. grace.

  1036. Think of the

  1037. Apostle Paul

  1038. or someone

  1039. like the slave

  1040. traitor

  1041. John Newton

  1042. who wrote

  1043. that famous hymn,

  1044. Amazing Grace.

  1045. Who would have

  1046. thought it possible

  1047. that they might

  1048. be welcomed

  1049. into the family

  1050. of God?

  1051. But it's true

  1052. for all of us,

  1053. isn't it?

  1054. Who would have

  1055. thought of it

  1056. of us?

  1057. It's all too easy

  1058. to forget,

  1059. but we must

  1060. never lose

  1061. sight of the

  1062. God of saving

  1063. power.

  1064. God

  1065. gets His people

  1066. like Rahab

  1067. from Jericho,

  1068. from the city

  1069. of destruction.

  1070. This is where

  1071. Jesus Christ

  1072. claims His people.

  1073. He doesn't

  1074. get them

  1075. from heaven.

  1076. He gets them

  1077. from the world.

  1078. Think of those

  1079. words of Paul

  1080. to the Christians

  1081. in Corinth,

  1082. 1 Corinthians 6,

    1 Corinthians 6:9

  1083. verse 9 and

  1084. following,

  1085. Do you not know

  1086. that the unrighteous,

  1087. he says,

  1088. will not inherit

  1089. the kingdom of God?

  1090. Don't be deceived.

  1091. Not the sexually

  1092. immoral,

  1093. idolaters,

  1094. adulterers,

  1095. those who practice

  1096. homosexuality,

  1097. thieves,

  1098. the greedy,

  1099. drunkards,

  1100. revilers,

  1101. nor swindlers,

  1102. will inherit

  1103. the kingdom of God.

  1104. That's what he says.

  1105. Then he says this,

  1106. And such

  1107. were some of you.

1108. Such were some of you,

  1109. but you were washed,

  1110. you were sanctified,

  1111. you were justified

  1112. in the name

1113. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1114. and by the Spirit

  1115. of our God.

  1116. And that is the

  1117. wonderful reality

  1118. of the gospel.

1119. No matter who we are,

1120. no matter what we've done,

  1121. you were washed,

  1122. you were sanctified,

  1123. you were justified.

  1124. That is what happens

1125. when you become a Christian.

  1126. That's what happens

  1127. when you're united

  1128. to Jesus Christ

  1129. by faith.

  1130. This is what Jesus

  1131. offers to all

  1132. and everyone

  1133. who will come

  1134. to him in faith.

  1135. He invites you

1136. to come to be washed

  1137. from all the guilt

1138. and shame of your sin.

  1139. He invites you

  1140. to come and belong

1141. to him as a child of God.

  1142. He invites you

1143. to come and not only

  1144. be forgiven,

  1145. but actually be declared

  1146. righteous in his sight.

  1147. The God

  1148. of keeping power.

  1149. Don't be a believer

  1150. filled with fear

  1151. and anxiety

  1152. about the future.

  1153. Here is the God

  1154. who has shed

  1155. his blood for you,

  1156. whose power

  1157. will keep you.

  1158. Jesus said,

  1159. my Father

  1160. who has given them

  1161. to me

  1162. is greater than all.

  1163. No one is able

  1164. to snatch them

1165. out of my Father's hand.

  1166. The God

  1167. of transforming power.

  1168. Don't be trapped

  1169. in despair

  1170. and despondency

  1171. over what's happening

  1172. in your life

  1173. or what's happening

  1174. in the world.

  1175. Here is the God

  1176. whose power

  1177. can transform

  1178. the most impossible

  1179. of situations.

  1180. With God,

  1181. all things are possible.

1182. As the old hymn advises,

  1183. take it

  1184. to the Lord

  1185. in prayer.

  1186. And he's the God

  1187. of saving power.

  1188. So,

1189. no matter who you are,

1190. no matter what you've done,

  1191. you can come

  1192. to Jesus Christ

  1193. and find in him

  1194. all that you need.

  1195. Don't give up

  1196. on that person

  1197. who seems lost,

  1198. disinterested,

  1199. for this God,

  1200. his powerful grace,

  1201. can save the most

  1202. far gone of sinners

1203. and save to the uttermost.

  1204. Paul reminds us

  1205. in 1 Timothy 1,

  1206. he saved even

  1207. the worst of sinners.

  1208. Help me now

  1209. to live a life

  1210. that's dependent

  1211. on your grace.

  1212. Keep my heart

  1213. and guard my soul

  1214. from the evils

  1215. that I face.

  1216. you are worthy

  1217. to be praised.

  1218. Within my every thought

  1219. and deed,

  1220. O great God

  1221. of highest heaven,

  1222. glorify your name

  1223. through me.

  1224. Fix your eyes

  1225. on this God.

  1226. Look to him,

  1227. the God of keeping,

  1228. transforming,

  1229. and saving power.

  1230. Let's pray.

  1231. Almighty God,

  1232. we bless you

  1233. and praise you

  1234. that you are indeed

  1235. a God of power.

  1236. We thank you

  1237. for the way

  1238. in which you have

  1239. revealed your power

  1240. in years past

  1241. and generations past.

  1242. And we thank you

  1243. most of all

  1244. for the way

  1245. in which you have

  1246. revealed your power

  1247. and your grace

  1248. and your love

  1249. in the person

1250. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1251. Lord,

  1252. may we be found

  1253. looking to him

  1254. this evening

  1255. and trusting in him.

  1256. May you keep us

  1257. and preserve us.

  1258. May you use us

  1259. and bless us

  1260. in your service

  1261. and for your glory.

  1262. Amen.

  1263. Amen.

  1264. Amen.

  1265. Amen.
