  1. Our scripture reading is from the New Testament, from Hebrews chapter 11, verses 32 to 40.

    Hebrews 11:32–40

  2. ! And at the very beginning you're going to see in Hebrews 11, verse 32, that the author's going to say,

    Hebrews 11:32

  3. ! And remember that Hebrews is a sermon, and so he's saying something like, do we have enough time to talk

  4. about all these great people here? And so that's what he's saying to us as we begin this reading.

  5. So let's read together, Hebrews 11, 32 to 40.

  6. Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release

  7. so that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and flogging,

  8. and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned. They were sawn in two. They were killed with the

  9. sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated, of whom the world

  10. was not worthy, wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

  11. And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised,

  12. since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

  13. This is God's holy word.

  14. Well, it's lovely to see you all this evening as we come to the end of our chapter that we've been

  15. working through for a couple of months. The end of the chapter, not quite the end of our series,

  16. because David's going to just borrow the first few words, the first few verses from chapter 12

  17. next week as he rounds off our series. But what have we been looking at throughout the past few weeks

  18. as we've been going through Hebrews chapter 11? Well, we've started off by thinking about

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  19. these Old Testament heroes of the faith who were commended by God for their faith, for their trust in him,

  20. how they lived their lives that way. And the writer's taken us chronologically. He's taken us right from

  21. the beginning of the Bible. He begins talking about Cain and Abel, the sons of the first man and woman.

  22. And then we move to Enoch. Enoch was, you'll remember if you were here, taken by God, not seeing death,

  23. taken up. We moved on to Noah. And Noah, of course, followed God and he was saved from the mighty flood

  24. that took away the world along with his family. We saw that we moved then on to Abraham. Abraham,

  25. to whom was made incredible promises to him personally, and that through Abraham and through his seed,

  26. the whole world was going to be blessed. We moved through Abraham and his wife, Sarah, to his son,

  27. Isaac. And you'll recall, God tested Abraham's faith. And we moved on to his grandson, Jacob,

  28. and then his son, Joseph, who was taken as a slave into Egypt. And he rose up, didn't he, Joseph, with God's help.

  29. And then we're in Egypt. And we thought about Moses, who led God's people back out of Egypt,

  30. out of slavery. God took them out and to the edge of another land. And then we thought about

  31. the Israelites taking the city of Jericho as they looked for a city of their own, and how

  32. a prostitute called Rahab was saved because she put her faith in God. An extraordinary tale, a family

  33. saga that spans many generations. But you'll notice that this family is not a family of blood. There's

  34. some other people in there who are not direct lineage of Adam or Abraham or others. So this isn't a family

  35. based on who you're born to. This is a family based on who your faith is in. Now, the writer of Hebrews 11

  36. writes by faith 19 times. And he's used by faith every time he's introduced a new historic figure or

  37. introduced the things that they became known for, renowned for. And that's really important because

  38. none of these people achieved these things that they achieved on their own strength in and of themselves.

  39. They were able to accomplish any of these things because they lived by faith. They lived the way

  40. that they lived. They did the things that they did because they had faith in the promises that God made

  41. to them. So the writer to the Hebrews is saying to his audience the same thing that he's saying to us

  42. tonight. He's saying, I know you've had trials. I know it's difficult. I know that following Jesus is

  43. not always easy. But look how these amazing heroes of the path kept their faith in God despite the

  44. things that they went through. The good things that they went through, the hard things that they went

  45. through. Look at what they did and look forward to the fulfillment of what God has promised. So that's a

  46. recap of how we've got to where we are tonight. Tonight we're going to look at that short passage

  47. that Corey read, verses 32 to 40. And I think it divides nicely, for my purposes at least tonight,

  48. into three parts. So first of all, we're going to think about the good things that living by faith

  49. accomplished. And then we'll see the bad things that living by faith allows people to endure.

  50. And then we'll read about the perfect reality Christians living by faith look forward to.

  51. The good, the bad, and the perfect. Okay, let's start with the good. The good living by faith

  52. accomplished. So as Corey already said, the writer begins with, what more can I say? If you've ever

  53. been to like more than one church sermon, the minister's probably said, the preacher's probably said,

  54. I can't fit all of this in. I'd love to say more about this. I just can't say it all.

  55. And the writer to the Hebrews is saying the same thing. He's not saying I've run out of material.

  56. These are all the guys that did really well, all the people that live by faith. And I don't know what

  57. else to say. He's saying, I couldn't possibly fill the pages that I have because of the amount

  58. of incredible things that God did through people who lived by faith. So instead, what he does is he

  59. skips from giving us brief stories about the individuals to giving us a list. And he lists

  60. names Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel. And then he uses a collective term prophets,

  61. which encompasses another whole group of people. And he doesn't explain who these individuals are.

  62. These are household names. Everyone knows. Everyone he's writing to, they know who these people are.

  63. They don't need an introduction. Maybe for us, Gideon was called by God. And he went into his town

  64. and he tore down an altar and an idol that was made to the false God. And then later on, maybe you'll

  65. remember if you've read in the book of Judges, God gives him an army of only 300 men. And he wins an

  66. incredible battle against 135,000. And then Samson, or Barak, sorry, was next. And he obeyed God's

  67. command when he was told to go and attack the mighty Canaanite army. And then Samson is the guy,

  68. maybe we know, he had incredible strength. He killed a thousand people who were oppressing his own people.

  69. He didn't even have any proper weapons. He just used whatever he had to hand. And then even at the end

  70. of his life, he relied on God to give him his strength. And he brought down a whole bunch of

  71. other enemies as he was dying. And then Jephthah, he was a mighty warrior. He won a great victory over

  72. another group of people, the Ammonites. And his victory was so impressive that he destroyed,

  73. or he had victory over 20 villages and towns and cities. David's probably the best known of all.

  74. He was the king of Israel. He famously killed a giant. He led the people to many great victories and

  75. many great things. And then Samuel the prophet, he offered the people the words of God, offered great

  76. wisdom to Israel as they lived before God. These icons of the Old Testament, they all achieved

  77. spectacular things, supernatural victories in some cases. But the message, as we've already touched on,

  78. is not, look at how great these guys are. You should try and train like Samson did. You should

  79. study like Samuel did. The real message is, look how powerful living by faith is.

  80. Because when we scratch a little bit further beneath the surface of each of these individuals,

  81. and the stories are all there for us in the Bible to look at, we see that these are not

  82. perfect people. They've not got super faith. When we make Gideon, he's hiding

  83. from his enemies. And he asks God over and over again, God, are you really going to do this? Are you

  84. really going to do this? Are you really going to do this? Are you really going to do this? He's

  85. uncertain that God's going to come through for him. And then at the end, he ends up taking,

  86. making a kind of apron thing out of gold, which is used to worship false gods. And then if you look

  87. at Barak, so he went into battle. Yes, he did. But he would only go if the powerful prophetess Deborah

  88. would go with him. He had trusted the prophetess that he could see with his eyes more than he trusted

  89. in God. And Samson, we maybe know, did many things. He was a Nazarite people who made special vows to

  90. God about the way that they were going to live. And he broke those vows. And he loved to show off

  91. his strength. He chased after women. Jephthah bargained with God. And it was tragic. He made a deal. He

  92. made a vow, a rash vow that ended up in the sacrifice of his own daughter, tragically. And we

  93. know David had an affair with a married woman. And not only that, but he then sent her husband right

  94. into the front of the battle, into the heat of the battle. And he told the captain of his army to

  95. withdraw so that this guy was definitely going to be killed. And then Samuel's flaws maybe don't seem so

  96. obvious. But when we read about his sons who were greedy and they were selfish, they were happy to

  97. take bribes. And he still made them judges, governors over the people. It's not to run these men down.

  98. I'm not trying to say that these guys are not as good as we think they are. It's to demonstrate

  99. that it wasn't because of who they are that they were able to do what they did. And verse 33 of our

  100. passage explains it for us. It says, who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained

  101. promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword,

  102. were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. So because we've

  103. worked our way through the whole chapter, we realize that the most important words in that couple of

  104. verses is not conquering kingdoms or enforcing justice. The most important words are through faith.

  105. These heroes are only heroes because God worked his mighty deeds through them, because they lived

  106. with faith. They lived by faith in God's promises. And I hope that's an encouragement for us as we sit

  107. here tonight. Because God's not asking us to be superheroes. He's not asking us to emulate super

  108. saints who had super faith. These were flawed people who merely trusted in God. And that means that

  109. no matter how strong you feel, no matter how weak you feel, God wants you to put your trust in him.

  110. It means you can put your trust in God, no matter what your current circumstances are.

  111. Despite your fears, despite your weaknesses, despite your temptation to walk away from following after

  112. God, to take an easier path when things get hard. You're unlikely to face a lion on the royal mile

  113. when we get out of church tonight, or expect to take up your sword when you go to work tomorrow.

  114. But living by faith is still the way Christians are to live today. Because living by faith is how God's

  115. kingdom breaks into the world. So it's not your own strength that's going to allow you to go into the office

  116. tomorrow and refuse to inflate the price of a job because it would make you look better to your boss.

  117. Or it's not your own righteousness that's going to help you shut down gossip between colleagues.

  118. Or keep quiet when you hear Christians talking badly about other people in ways that's unfair.

  119. It's not because you're exceptionally selfless that you give money to charity when you can think of a

  120. hundred ways that you could use that money yourself. No, it's because you trust in Jesus. You're enabled

  121. to live by faith. Of course, non-Christians do these things too. Lots of non-Christians do incredible good

  122. things. But history shows us that disproportionately Christians do good in the world.

  123. for the sake of others. Faith trusts in things that are unseen. But its effects are seen in the world

  124. all around us, in the lives of people who live by faith. So we get to verse 35. 35 of our passage is a bit

  125. of a hinge section, I think. And it hinges on resurrection from the dead. 35 says,

  126. women received back their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release

  127. in order that they may attain a better resurrection.

  128. The resurrection is spoken about twice here. And I think that when the writer is talking about women

  129. receiving back their dead, we can think about a couple of occasions in the Old Testament

  130. where God's prophets were enabled to bring young men back from the dead after they had died.

  131. And you can read about those 1 Kings, 2 Kings. But there's a New Testament scholar called Douglas

  132. Moo. And he says that we can think about these resurrections, young men who died and were brought

  133. back to life. More like resuscitations. Because they were brought back to life. And that power was

  134. supernatural from God. But these young men are going to die again. When the Hebrews writer talks about a

  135. better resurrection, the second time he says resurrection, he's talking about a resurrection

  136. that will never end. An ultimate resurrection. Being raised from a life that will be eternal.

  137. To a life that will be eternal.

  138. The bad. So the bad things that living by faith enables Christians to endure.

  139. I think Christians are just like everybody else. We sometimes look back. At times gone by and we say,

  140. weren't things better then? Ah, the good old days. Everything was easier. If only I lived then instead

  141. of now, I'd be a better person than I am. And after all the great names that he's just gone through,

  142. maybe the Hebrews are tempted to think the same thing. Maybe they think things were just better

  143. the way that they were. The way that they were. The way that they once were. And the writer here stops

  144. them from looking back misty-eyed and pining for a better day. Past glories. And he reminds them that

  145. while the historic church, the great heroes of the faith, are famous names for living by faith,

  146. and they achieved great things, it's also full of suffering.

  147. Verse 36 says,

  148. others suffered mocking and flogging and even chains and imprisonment.

  149. They were stoned. They were sawn in two.

  150. They were killed with a sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats,

  151. destitute, afflicted, mistreated.

  152. And there's lots of real examples of these things happening in the Old Testament. But what more can

  153. I say? I don't have time to pick them all out tonight. But what we see here is a stark reminder

  154. that living by faith does not mean avoiding suffering. Living by faith means enduring suffering.

  155. In chapter 10, the one before this, the writer to the Hebrews has already acknowledged that he knows

  156. that these people have endured hard times. He says,

  157. there wasn't a good old days when Christians lived in a paradise on earth, when everything was worked out,

  158. when they just had to say a prayer and God would make everything happen. In chapter 10, he says

  159. that he knows they had been publicly

  160. reproached and afflicted.

  161. Some of them had been mistreated,

  162. seen their friends mistreated, some were put in prison,

  163. and they accepted their property

  164. being taken away.

  165. But he's reminding them that this is the case.

  166. This has always been the way.

  167. This is the way

  168. in the Old Testament. This is the way for the Hebrews.

  169. This is the way for us.

  170. We're not to live

  171. expecting to be given and given and given everything that we need in order to make our life smooth and gentle and easy.

  172. These people that he references did not have health or wealth.

  173. They were dressed in animal skins.

  174. They're not walking about in fur coats.

  175. They're living in abject poverty.

  176. And unlike the names which introduced the amazing winds

  177. in verses 32 to 34,

  178. the summary of these sufferings,

  179. which is in 35 to 38,

  180. it doesn't include any names at all.

  181. We can find these things

  182. applying to people in the Bible.

  183. But the anonymity, I think,

  184. it shows that while living by faith

  185. is for the most famous people

  186. in Bible history,

  187. it's also

  188. for the exact opposite category.

  189. the suffering,

  190. the afflicted,

  191. the mistreated,

  192. the homeless wanderers,

  193. the people

  194. on their own,

  195. without a home,

  196. complete unknown.

  197. These people,

  198. the complete unknowns,

  199. are to live in exactly the same way

  200. as the most famous names in the Bible.

  201. They're to live by faith.

  202. And this is also reassuring for us

  203. because most of us

  204. are not famous.

  205. many of us

  206. are not going to be.

  207. But we're all sufferers.

  208. We've all

  209. either come through suffering,

  210. living through suffering,

  211. or you're going to suffer.

  212. And to be able to endure that,

  213. we need to live by faith

  214. in God's promises.

  215. So,

  216. if you're here tonight

  217. and you're sick,

  218. or if you're here tonight

  219. and you're

  220. feeling low

  221. about your living situation,

  222. or your relationship status,

  223. or you feel embarrassed

  224. about losing your job,

  225. well,

  226. know this,

  227. that in this world,

  228. living by faith

  229. does sometimes look like losing.

  230. Sometimes living by faith

  231. feels like we're losing.

  232. Sometimes in the eyes of the world,

  233. living by faith is losing.

  234. But know too,

  235. that worldly riches

  236. or success

  237. are not a reflection

  238. of your faith.

  239. true faith

  240. holds on

  241. in suffering.

  242. True faith

  243. that holds on

  244. in suffering

  245. is a guarantee

  246. that something much better

  247. is coming.

  248. Something

  249. that won't fade away.

  250. Something that lasts forever.

  251. Verse 38,

  252. the writer says,

  253. of whom the world

  254. was not worthy.

  255. He's talking about

  256. these suffering people.

  257. And he says,

  258. in the eyes of the world,

  259. these poor souls

  260. wandering around

  261. dressed in primitive

  262. animal skins

  263. in the wilderness

  264. among the animals

  265. with nothing to offer.

  266. They're poor,

  267. they're destitute,

  268. they're mistreated

  269. because they were believed

  270. to be worthless.

  271. But the Hebrews writer

  272. is spinning this round

  273. 180 degrees.

  274. Worthy,

  275. he says.

  276. It's the world

  277. that wasn't worthy of them.

  278. Because these people

  279. were looking forward

  280. to something far greater,

  281. far better

  282. than even the greatest

  283. comforts

  284. and riches

  285. and powers

  286. and pleasures

  287. of the world.

  288. Okay, thirdly,

  289. and finally for tonight,

  290. the perfect.

  291. The perfect reality

  292. Christians living by faith

  293. look forward to.

  294. So in verse 39,

  295. the writer frames

  296. this whole section

  297. of his letter

  298. that's filled with examples

  299. of what it means

  300. to live by faith.

  301. He frames it

  302. with the idea

  303. of being commended

  304. for faith.

  305. So we can see that

  306. in verse 2

  307. at the very top

  308. of our chapter

  309. and then we see it again

  310. here in verse 39.

  311. He says,

  312. and all these

  313. being commended

  314. through faith.

  315. And then he's commending

  316. them at the beginning,

  317. he's commending them

  318. at the end.

  319. And in between

  320. the 30 verses or so,

  321. he's established

  322. that the life of faith

  323. is a life of ups

  324. and it's a life of downs.

  325. It's a life of triumphs

  326. and it's a life

  327. of sufferings.

  328. And that living

  329. through faith,

  330. we cannot,

  331. we do not become

  332. puffed up

  333. by our achievements

  334. because it's not

  335. through our own strength

  336. that we've achieved anything.

  337. But we don't give up

  338. in our sufferings

  339. because it's

  340. by faith

  341. that we can endure

  342. the things

  343. that we're going through.

  344. Despite our own weaknesses,

  345. we hold on

  346. to the God

  347. who always keeps

  348. his promises.

  349. But then look

  350. at the second half

  351. of verse 39

  352. and it says,

  353. and all these

  354. though commended

  355. for their faith

  356. did not receive

  357. what was promised.

  358. And this is a repeated

  359. statement from verse 13

  360. so we can't miss it

  361. in this chapter.

  362. But how can that be?

  363. How can it be

  364. that the good

  365. and the suffering

  366. who put their faith

  367. in God's promises,

  368. who endured

  369. all these things,

  370. who achieved

  371. all these things

  372. because they had faith

  373. in the promises

  374. that God made them?

  375. How can it be

  376. that they did not receive

  377. the things

  378. that were promised to them?

  379. Well,

  380. throughout their lives,

  381. Abraham and Sarah

  382. and Isaac

  383. and Jacob

  384. and Gideon

  385. and Barak

  386. and all the others,

  387. they all suffered

  388. and they all lived

  389. with their eyes

  390. fixed above,

  391. looking to heavenly things,

  392. looking to God

  393. as they walked

  394. through life.

  395. And we know

  396. verse 33 says,

  397. maybe you picked it up

  398. when you read it,

  399. it says they did

  400. obtain promises.

  401. They received

  402. the fulfillment

  403. of some promises,

  404. but while they were

  405. living by looking up,

  406. they were also

  407. looking forwards

  408. because the promises

  409. that they did receive

  410. were like a down payment

  411. on the real promise,

  412. the big promise,

  413. the final promise

  414. that was to come,

  415. the ultimate promise.

  416. Right back

  417. in the beginning,

  418. the beginning of the world,

  419. in the garden,

  420. Adam and Eve,

  421. they sinned

  422. and they broke

  423. the special relationship

  424. they had with God

  425. and the punishment

  426. that they deserved

  427. was death.

  428. But despite

  429. mankind

  430. sinning against God

  431. so grievously,

  432. God wasn't going

  433. to leave them to die.

  434. He put them

  435. out of the garden

  436. to wander.

  437. He dressed them

  438. in animal skins.

  439. Sounds familiar

  440. to the passage

  441. that we're in tonight.

  442. But God made a promise

  443. and he said

  444. that one day

  445. the seed of the man

  446. was going to come

  447. and he was going to

  448. crush the serpent

  449. who tempted Adam and Eve

  450. to sin against God.

  451. And then we jump

  452. forward a few generations

  453. to Abraham

  454. and again God

  455. makes promises

  456. and he says

  457. he's going to bless Abraham

  458. but he also says

  459. the whole world

  460. is going to be blessed

  461. through his seed,

  462. through his offspring.

  463. So it's with those promises

  464. in mind

  465. that the whole world

  466. is going to be blessed

  467. that we arrive

  468. at verse 40.

  469. God hasn't yet fulfilled

  470. his promises

  471. to them,

  472. to the great heroes

  473. of old

  474. and the great sufferers

  475. of old

  476. when they died

  477. because there's blessing

  478. still to come

  479. that they were

  480. looking forward to.

  481. verse 40 says

  482. God has provided

  483. something better

  484. for us.

  485. And it's a sudden switch

  486. of talking about them

  487. to now talking about them

  488. and us together,

  489. all of us

  490. in one.

  491. He's saying

  492. all the Old Testament saints

  493. and on the Hebrew

  494. believers,

  495. every saint

  496. of the church

  497. they're going to receive

  498. blessing together

  499. because the serpent crusher

  500. from Adam

  501. and the blessed seed

  502. of Abraham

  503. is the same one

  504. who's going to

  505. ultimately fulfill

  506. all of God's promises

  507. for them

  508. and for us.

  509. And this is Jesus,

  510. God's own son

  511. who came to save

  512. his people,

  513. past,

  514. present

  515. and future

  516. all believers

  517. across all ages

  518. saved

  519. by the saving work

  520. of God,

  521. of Jesus

  522. on the cross.

  523. And Jesus

  524. is the better thing

  525. that's been provided.

  526. Verse 40 says

  527. that apart from us

  528. they should not

  529. be made perfect.

  530. And the way

  531. that that's phrased

  532. is interesting,

  533. it doesn't say

  534. that they would be

  535. made perfect

  536. with us,

  537. he frames it

  538. negatively

  539. to give it emphasis

  540. that they should

  541. not be made perfect

  542. without us.

  543. So the patriarchs,

  544. the Old Testament

  545. heroes

  546. and the Old Testament

  547. sufferers,

  548. they lived

  549. by looking up

  550. for heavenly guidance

  551. but they also

  552. looked forward,

  553. looking forward

  554. to the day

  555. of the Christ

  556. when the Savior

  557. would come,

  558. the long

  559. expected

  560. Messiah.

  561. And today

  562. we live

  563. looking up,

  564. we look

  565. for heavenly guidance

  566. from the Holy Spirit

  567. to help us

  568. as we walk

  569. through our trials

  570. and through our troubles

  571. and to give thanks

  572. to when we have

  573. good things happening

  574. in our lives

  575. that we know

  576. that we don't deserve

  577. because we're better

  578. than anybody else.

  579. But we also

  580. look back,

  581. we look back

  582. 2,000 years

  583. to the cross

  584. when the long

  585. expected Savior

  586. came and lived

  587. and died

  588. and rose again.

  589. they look

  590. forward

  591. to the arrival

  592. of the promise

  593. and we look

  594. back

  595. to the inauguration

  596. of the fulfillment

  597. of the ultimate

  598. promise.

  599. And

  600. Reformer John Calvin

  601. tells us how privileged

  602. we are to be

  603. in this situation

  604. right now.

  605. Compared to the people,

  606. the old people

  607. of faith,

  608. we've got

  609. incredible blessing.

  610. He wrote,

  611. a tiny spark

  612. of light

  613. led them

  614. to heaven.

  615. But now

  616. that the sun

  617. of righteousness

  618. shines on us,

  619. how can we have

  620. any excuse

  621. not to live

  622. by faith?

  623. They had a tiny

  624. spark of light

  625. and that's what

  626. they looked forward

  627. to.

  628. But we've got

  629. the sun of righteousness

  630. to look back on.

  631. What he has achieved

  632. on the cross.

  633. What a blessing

  634. to have the account

  635. of Christ crucified

  636. explained

  637. and clearly

  638. delivered to us.

  639. The promise

  640. has arrived.

  641. Christ has come.

  642. He's fulfilled

  643. the law,

  644. died for the sins

  645. of the people.

  646. He's established

  647. a new covenant

  648. and he's ascended

  649. into heaven.

  650. While

  651. the

  652. Old Testament

  653. ancestors

  654. had to live

  655. through their

  656. imagination

  657. of what the Messiah

  658. might be,

  659. we can read

  660. exactly

  661. what it was like.

  662. We can see

  663. the reality

  664. on the pages

  665. of the Bible.

  666. So while

  667. we live

  668. looking up

  669. for God's help,

  670. we look back

  671. on the fulfillment

  672. of God's promises

  673. on the cross.

  674. But we also

  675. look forward

  676. because we look

  677. forward to the day

  678. when the promises

  679. will be made,

  680. as verse 40

  681. tells us,

  682. perfect,

  683. fully developed,

  684. complete.

  685. Jesus founded

  686. our faith.

  687. He sits now

  688. at the right hand

  689. of God

  690. in heaven

  691. and he's coming

  692. back.

  693. And when he does,

  694. he will finally

  695. and fully complete

  696. the promises

  697. that have already

  698. begun.

  699. Every good thing

  700. that God has

  701. promised to his

  702. people

  703. will be fulfilled.

  704. So here's the

  705. question that we

  706. have to ask.

  707. At the end

  708. of Hebrews 11,

  709. this chapter

  710. that spans

  711. the Old Testament

  712. breaks into the

  713. new and is

  714. pivotal for us

  715. as we live

  716. our lives today.

  717. Is the invisible

  718. realm

  719. real to you?

  720. Well,

  721. you can't see it

  722. with your eyes.

  723. Do you believe

  724. in what's described

  725. in God's word?

  726. Do you trust

  727. God's word?

  728. Like Abraham

  729. and Sarah

  730. and Isaac

  731. and Jacob

  732. and Gideon

  733. and Barak

  734. and all the

  735. others,

  736. they believed

  737. that God

  738. would send

  739. a Savior.

  740. They lived

  741. as if God

  742. was sending

  743. a Savior.

  744. Savior.

  745. We live

  746. after the

  747. arrival of

  748. that Savior.

  749. We know

  750. his name.

  751. We can read

  752. about his

  753. redeeming works,

  754. the works

  755. that he

  756. performed

  757. for us.

  758. But the

  759. question is,

  760. is that real

  761. to you?

  762. Do you know

  763. it to be

  764. true?

  765. Does the

  766. reality of

  767. Jesus make

  768. you strive

  769. after the

  770. good things

  771. of God?

  772. Does it

  773. inspire you

  774. to pursue

  775. God?

  776. Does it

  777. inspire you

  778. to live

  779. for the

  780. good of

  781. the people

  782. around you?

  783. Because

  784. whether things

  785. are going

  786. really well

  787. right now,

  788. or whether

  789. you're really

  790. suffering,

  791. or whether

  792. you're

  793. somewhere

  794. in between,

  795. you can

  796. look forward

  797. to something

  798. better,

  799. a better

  800. resurrection,

  801. to a life

  802. that will

  803. never end,

  804. a better

  805. city that

  806. God himself

  807. has planned

  808. and built

  809. and perfected

  810. for you,

  811. a better

  812. rest when

  813. you'll be

  814. free from

  815. all the

  816. worries and

  817. fears and

  818. pains and

  819. suffering and

  820. trials and

  821. doubts and

  822. troubles and

  823. challenges that

  824. we all live

  825. through,

  826. a day when

  827. you'll come

  828. face to face

  829. with the

  830. better Adam,

  831. the better

  832. Isaac,

  833. the better

  834. Jacob,

  835. the better

  836. Moses,

  837. the better

  838. Joseph,

  839. the better

  840. Israel,

  841. the ultimate

  842. hero of

  843. faith,

  844. Jesus Christ,

  845. because it's

  846. in him that

  847. all the

  848. promises of

  849. God will be

  850. fulfilled.

  851. Let's pray.

  852. Lord God,

  853. we ask that

  854. you would help

  855. us tonight to

  856. fix our eyes

  857. upon Jesus,

  858. the one who

  859. came and

  860. lived and

  861. died and

  862. has risen

  863. again for

  864. his people.

  865. And Lord,

  866. we look

  867. forward to

  868. the day he

  869. will come

  870. again to

  871. judge the

  872. world.

  873. We'll

  874. separate those

  875. who live by

  876. faith and

  877. those who

  878. don't,

  879. not because

  880. of the

  881. things that

  882. we've

  883. achieved in

  884. life,

  885. but because

  886. of the

  887. achievements of

  888. the one in

  889. whom our

  890. faith is

  891. placed.

  892. Help us,

  893. Lord,

  894. to live by

  895. faith as we

  896. journey through

  897. our lives

  898. with ups and

  899. downs,

  900. with wins and

  901. losses.

  902. Help us,

  903. Lord,

  904. to love one

  905. another,

  906. knowing that

  907. we are all

  908. living this

  909. life of faith

  910. together.

  911. And we pray,

  912. Lord, that you

  913. would hear all

  914. our prayers in

  915. Jesus' name.

  916. Amen.
