  1. We're going to read God's Word together. I'm going to invite Philip up, who's going to read for us Daniel chapter 9.

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  2. ! If you've got a church Bible, it's on page 746.

  3. Daniel chapter 9.

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  4. In the first year of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus, by descent of Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans.

  5. In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to the words of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet,

  6. must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely 70 years.

  7. Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

  8. I prayed to the Lord my God and made confession, saying,

  9. O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments.

  10. We have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled.

  11. Turning aside from your commandments and rules, we have not listened to your servants, the prophets,

  12. who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our fathers and to all the people of the land.

  13. To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day to the men of Judah,

  14. to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, those who are neared and those who are far away,

  15. in all the lands to which you have driven them, because of the treachery that they have committed against you.

  16. To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.

  17. To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him

  18. and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws,

  19. which he set before us by his servants, the prophets.

  20. All Israel has congrressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice.

  21. And the curse and oath that are written in the law of Moses, the servant of God,

  22. have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him.

  23. He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us,

  24. by bringing upon us a great calamity.

  25. For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem.

  26. As it is written in the law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us,

  27. yet we have not entreated the favour of the Lord our God,

  28. turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth.

  29. Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us.

  30. For the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done,

  31. and we have not obeyed his voice.

  32. And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand,

  33. and have made a name for yourself, as at this day we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

  34. O Lord, according to your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem,

  35. your holy hill, because of our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers.

  36. Jerusalem and your people have become a byword among all who are around us.

  37. Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant,

  38. and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord,

  39. make your face to shine upon your sanctuary, which is desolate.

  40. O my God, incline your ear and hear, open your eyes and see our desolations,

  41. and the city that is called by your name.

  42. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness,

  43. but because of your great mercy.

  44. O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive.

  45. O Lord, pay attention and act.

  46. Delay not for your own sake, O my God,

  47. because your city and your people are called by your name.

  48. O Lord, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.

  49. At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, our words went out,

  50. and I have come to tell it to you, for you are greatly loved.

  51. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision.

  52. Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city

  53. to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin,

  54. and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness,

  55. to seal both vision and profit, and to anoint a most holy place.

  56. Know, therefore, and understand that from the going out of the word

  57. to restore and build Jerusalem,

  58. to the coming of an anointed one, a prince,

  59. there shall be seven weeks.

  60. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again

  61. with squares and moat, but in a troubled time.

  62. And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off

  63. and shall have nothing.

  64. And the people of the prince who is to come

  65. shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.

  66. Its end shall come with flood,

  67. and to the end there shall be war.

  68. Desolations are decreed,

  69. and he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week.

  70. And for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering.

  71. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate

  72. until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.

  73. We are in the book of Daniel one last time before the Advent season starts,

  74. and it's a good chapter to end on, Daniel chapter 9 for now.

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  75. And Daniel and his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  76. are in Babylon, that ancient city.

  77. And this whole book has been about how they show us

  78. what it means to be faithful when being a faithful believer is risky,

  79. and what it means to follow God in a place where you are in the minority,

  80. in a city where you are in the minority.

  81. And this is a place where if we were to update it to modern language,

  82. people would say that the faith of Daniel is outdated and silly and traditionalist,

  83. and we live in a not dissimilar time.

  84. So it's been a really important book, I think, for us in 2025 in the city of Edinburgh.

  85. Now, one of the things we have not talked about this whole series

  86. is why they are in Babylon.

  87. We've barely mentioned it, and this is really what the prayer is about,

  88. why they are in Babylon at all.

  89. And so for 400 years, God's people, Israel,

  90. which were split into a northern kingdom and a southern kingdom,

  91. Israel and Judah, they did not put God at the center of their lives,

  92. and they followed after idol, after idol, after idol.

  93. And really, they lived as if they were already in Babylon.

  94. They worshipped Babylonian gods for hundreds of years before they ever got to Babylon.

  95. And so what happened is God gave them to Babylon.

  96. He gave them what they really wanted, and that was to be polytheists and idolaters.

  97. That's the life that they had lived.

  98. And so in this prayer, just if you notice verse 5,

  99. we turned aside from your commands.

  100. We did not listen to the prophets.

  101. That's verse 6.

  102. Verse 7, all of Judah, all of Israel disobeyed.

  103. So there's just references to that 400 years of following idols.

  104. Even verse 8, our kings, our princes, and our fathers all disobeyed.

  105. And so God was really patient, and for centuries and centuries,

  106. He showed mercy to them, and then eventually they were disciplined.

  107. And so this is a story of their discipline,

  108. that they were disciplined by God for following idols.

  109. Now Daniel was a teenager when they went to Babylon.

  110. He was exiled as a young teenager in 605 BC,

  111. and that means that Daniel was not a part of that.

  112. He was not a part of the 400 years of worshipping idol after idol.

  113. And so when we get there,

  114. Daniel's a man who hadn't done those things,

  115. like the fathers and the princes and the kings.

  116. And then in the book of Daniel, unusually for the Old Testament,

  117. Daniel never has a fall story, a failure story.

  118. So you think about great David, King David.

  119. He was great, but he had several major failure stories.

  120. And Solomon was very great, but in the end he worshipped lots of false gods.

  121. Abraham was very great, but he has at least three fall stories.

  122. Daniel never has one.

  123. Very unusual for the Bible.

  124. So he's this teenager who never worshipped idols,

  125. and he's a man in this narrative that's presented without a failure story.

  126. He's full of integrity and wisdom and hope.

  127. He's a model of what it looks like to live in a city that thinks faith in God is silly.

  128. And, you know, if you want to know what it means to know God and follow God

  129. in a place where it's difficult to do that,

  130. we've got these examples like Daniel and Esther and Ruth and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  131. that really show us how to do that in the Bible.

  132. Yet, in Daniel 9, this prayer,

  133. he pleads for the redemption of every one of the people that got him into exile.

  134. And he prays really for Jerusalem, and the prayer is all about the restoration of Jerusalem.

  135. Verse 16,

  136. Let your wrath turn from Jerusalem.

  137. Let sacrifices be restored in Israel.

  138. Daniel knew, like the whole Old Testament, that as Jerusalem goes, so goes God's people.

  139. So you can really tell how God's people are doing in the Old Testament by the condition of Jerusalem.

  140. And so he pleads for Jerusalem and its restoration here in this prayer.

  141. But even more notable, faithful Daniel, what does he say?

  142. We sinned against you.

  143. Faithful Daniel, a model of integrity, says, I bring my confession.

  144. And, you know, see, Daniel had every right to be bitter,

  145. every right to be angry about what they had done to get him into exile.

  146. Sixty-six years in this passage, we learn from verse 1,

  147. he's been in exile, now under Darius in 539 BC.

  148. And for sixty-six years a slave.

  149. And he says, Lord, forgive me.

  150. And that means that Daniel is such a model of spirituality.

  151. He had never had an ounce of moral superiority,

  152. even though he was a man of integrity.

  153. And really what we can say is in this prayer we learn his humility.

  154. And this is a prayer that teaches us about spiritual formation.

  155. That's really what it's about.

  156. What does it mean to be so shaped by the Holy Spirit,

  157. formed your spirit by the Spirit,

  158. that you've been consistently, deeply changed your whole life

  159. to the point where you can pray like that?

  160. And Daniel's a model of spiritual formation,

  161. as is Esther and Ruth in similar books.

  162. We, in our philosophy of ministry here at St. C's,

  163. and in our vision statement,

  164. we have the language spiritual formation.

  165. A lot of times we like language like that,

  166. but don't really know exactly what we're getting at or what it means.

  167. And all it means is that spiritual formation

  168. is the recognition of a process of change

  169. that has to take place in the Christian life.

  170. And it's a change from where we used to not desire God

  171. in the life that God calls us to,

  172. and we're learning to grow into desire.

  173. So spiritual formation is all about desire.

  174. Jonathan Edwards, the great American theologian and pastor,

  175. he said the Christian life is growing affection for God over time.

  176. So a heart full of longing for God.

  177. St. Augustine very famously said,

  178. spiritual formation is the slow reordering of disordered loves.

  179. So what he meant by that is we love the wrong things in this life.

  180. Spiritual formation is the slow change of desire,

  181. loving the right things.

  182. Daniel, what we have here in this chapter

  183. is Daniel's spirituality, spiritual formation.

  184. All right, it's phenomenally unsurprising

  185. what we learn here.

  186. Let me give you three principles of spiritual formation

  187. from Daniel's life that are for us.

  188. Very simple, so basic, fundamental, so important.

  189. Number one, first we learn from Daniel

  190. to immerse yourself daily in God's Word

  191. until it moves you to pray.

  192. So Daniel teaches us first,

  193. immerse yourself every day in God's Word

  194. until you desire to pray.

  195. So he's been here 66 years in the city of Babylon.

  196. And in verse 2, he says,

  197. I discerned in the books.

  198. What are these books that he's looking at?

  199. They are the scrolls of what we now call the Old Testament.

  200. So Daniel is scouring the scrolls of the Old Testament

  201. as far as he has them so far in history.

  202. And he's looking for something.

  203. And what he's looking for is,

  204. when will this exile be over with?

  205. That's what he's looking for.

  206. And he finds it in the Jeremiah scroll.

  207. But very simple,

  208. the first thing to learn

  209. is how do you live in a city

  210. where the idols of Babylon are all around you

  211. and you are for this place

  212. and you love Edinburgh

  213. and you want to see the good,

  214. the common good,

  215. all throughout this land.

  216. And yet,

  217. the idols of the city

  218. don't get into you,

  219. don't get into your heart.

  220. You're for Babylon,

  221. but Babylon doesn't get into you.

  222. And how do you do that?

  223. And the first thing we learn is

  224. by believing that when you open the Bible,

  225. God is speaking to you.

  226. And it's basic

  227. and it's simple

  228. and it's classic

  229. reformed spirituality

  230. because it's biblical spirituality.

  231. But you've got to be a person

  232. who opens the Bible

  233. and believes the Word of God is here.

  234. And that you have conviction

  235. that when you open the Bible,

  236. God is speaking into your life.

  237. And that's exactly what we see here in Daniel.

  238. He opens the scrolls

  239. and he knows that when he reads them,

  240. he's hearing from God.

  241. And what does he hear?

  242. He hears from the Jeremiah scroll

  243. and he's probably reading Jeremiah 25 and 29.

  244. And there we learn that

  245. Jeremiah prophesies

  246. that Babylon would capture Judah

  247. and then after 70 years

  248. would send Judah back to Jerusalem.

  249. And so he learns here,

  250. we're told,

  251. that it's going to be 70 years

  252. until he gets to go back total

  253. to Jerusalem.

  254. So in the year 536,

  255. Cyrus sends the Judahites

  256. from Babylon back

  257. to Jerusalem.

  258. This is the year 539.

  259. So he's about three to four years away

  260. from this.

  261. And so that immediately leads him

  262. then to say,

  263. 70 years,

  264. I need to pray.

  265. I need to ask God

  266. to do this

  267. to actually fulfill

  268. what he's said.

  269. And the text,

  270. the way it puts it

  271. is that Daniel discerned

  272. or perceived

  273. the 70 years in Jeremiah.

  274. And so there's this sense

  275. that he understood something

  276. of what was happening

  277. but not all of it.

  278. Because later,

  279. Gabriel comes to him

  280. and we'll get to this

  281. at the end.

  282. Gabriel comes to him

  283. and explains the vision

  284. of the 70 years,

  285. the prophecy in detail

  286. that would be absolutely impossible

  287. for him to ever know.

  288. Now let's,

  289. basic and simple spirituality again.

  290. Daniel believes that

  291. when he opens God's word,

  292. God is speaking to him.

  293. And we learn here

  294. that Daniel believes

  295. that he is able to discern

  296. or perceive

  297. what the Bible says.

  298. And it's just to say

  299. that the Bible

  300. is clear enough

  301. to be discerned

  302. and believed.

  303. And when Gabriel comes

  304. to explain the vision,

  305. we learn

  306. that there are depths

  307. to the Bible

  308. that only God

  309. and his angels know.

  310. And there are caverns

  311. in a good way,

  312. so deep in Scripture

  313. that we will never

  314. get to the bottom

  315. of them in this life.

  316. And that's why

  317. you can come to the Bible

  318. and say,

  319. this is clear enough

  320. for me to understand

  321. what it means to be saved.

  322. And I can come back

  323. to the Bible

  324. over and over and over again

  325. and realize

  326. that there are depths here

  327. that I have yet to penetrate.

  328. You might have had

  329. this experience

  330. where you,

  331. if you've been in the church

  332. your whole life,

  333. you read the Bible

  334. your whole life

  335. and then you come

  336. maybe listen to a preacher

  337. or you meet with somebody

  338. and you read the Bible

  339. with them

  340. and you start to see things

  341. in the Bible

  342. that you've never seen before.

  343. And you say to your friend,

  344. I've read this passage

  345. so many times

  346. and I've never seen that.

  347. And it's because

  348. the Bible is perspicuous.

  349. It's clear.

  350. It can be discerned

  351. and perceived.

  352. And there are depths

  353. to it so deep

  354. that only God

  355. truly knows the bottom.

  356. And that's exactly

  357. the experience

  358. that Daniel has here.

  359. But he believes

  360. that when he opens

  361. the Bible

  362. he is reading God's Word.

  363. So let me put it

  364. in the simplest form.

  365. 2 Timothy 3.16

  366. All scripture

  367. is breathed out

  368. by God

  369. and profitable.

  370. And I just want to ask you

  371. this morning

  372. do you believe that?

  373. Are you believing

  374. that Monday to Saturday

  375. that when you open

  376. God's Word

  377. the scripture

  378. is breathed out

  379. by God

  380. and speaking

  381. directly to you

  382. and directly into your life

  383. because the Bible

  384. tells us it really is.

  385. Now

  386. that is at the heart

  387. of biblical spirituality

  388. but you may come today

  389. and say

  390. I've been reading

  391. the Bible

  392. and I don't feel that.

  393. I don't

  394. when I open the Bible

  395. most days

  396. I don't feel

  397. like it's breathing

  398. on me

  399. and breathed out

  400. by God.

  401. And the one thing

  402. I want to say

  403. about that today

  404. is that

  405. part of the reason

  406. for that is

  407. we have to learn

  408. to discern

  409. what the Bible

  410. is teaching

  411. in order to fully

  412. experience the breath

  413. of scripture.

  414. Jesus in John

    John 5 chapter mention

  415. chapter 5

  416. he comes to a group

  417. of religious leaders

  418. and he said

  419. you keep searching

  420. the scriptures

  421. because you think

  422. there you will find

  423. eternal life

  424. and they

  425. bear witness

  426. about me

  427. yet you refuse

  428. to come to me

  429. to have eternal life.

  430. Now Jesus

  431. is saying something

  432. so striking

  433. and that's

  434. he's saying to them

  435. the reason

  436. you're not able

  437. yet to discern

  438. the scriptures properly

  439. is because you've yet

  440. to realize

  441. they are all about me.

  442. And in Luke 24

  443. he comes to his disciples

  444. and he tells them

  445. in the law of Moses

  446. the Torah

  447. the first five books

  448. and the prophets

  449. most of the books

  450. of the Bible

  451. Old Testament

  452. and the writings

  453. like Daniel

  454. it says that Jesus

  455. spent days

  456. explaining to them

  457. how it was all

  458. about him.

  459. And one of the ways

  460. maybe the Bible

  461. isn't yet coming alive

  462. this could be the case

  463. in your life

  464. is because you've yet

  465. to see

  466. you've yet to grow

  467. as much into

  468. the Christocentric

  469. nature

  470. of scripture

  471. that the Bible

  472. is actually

  473. all about Jesus

  474. and it's not only

  475. that it points to him

  476. but it all flows

  477. back out from him.

  478. It's like

  479. looking at a bicycle wheel

  480. and if you think about

  481. imagine a bicycle wheel

  482. the outer rim

  483. of it

  484. is like the books

  485. of the Bible

  486. and there are

  487. all those spokes

  488. you know

  489. running into the center

  490. in and back out again.

  491. And at the very center

  492. of that wheel

  493. is the center

  494. that holds it all together

  495. and gives it life

  496. makes it possible

  497. and that is Jesus.

  498. That's what he says there.

  499. So you can

  500. the scriptures

  501. can come alive to you

  502. they really are

  503. God's word

  504. they can come alive to you

  505. when you discern

  506. that Jesus is the point.

  507. He's the center

  508. the meaning

  509. the habitus

  510. that you go into

  511. and back out of again

  512. to understand the whole.

  513. John Lennox

  514. is a famous

  515. Christian public intellectual

  516. that many of us know about

  517. and I was reading

  518. recently how he was

  519. preparing

  520. he told the story

  521. of preparing

  522. to preach

  523. at one of his friend's funerals

  524. and this friend

  525. had been with him

  526. at Cambridge

  527. and they were students together

  528. and they were mathematics

  529. students at Cambridge

  530. and they were in

  531. a department

  532. mathematics

  533. at that time

  534. where they were

  535. actively told

  536. if you want to survive

  537. in this world

  538. you must make sure

  539. no one thinks

  540. that you're a Christian

  541. you must suppress

  542. the faith

  543. very Babylonian

  544. in that way

  545. and he was sitting

  546. at the deathbed

  547. of his dear friend

  548. who survived that

  549. with him

  550. and he said

  551. what do you want me

  552. to say at your funeral

  553. and this is what

  554. his friend said

  555. encourage the people

  556. to do what we did

  557. when we were students

  558. together

  559. tell them

  560. read the word

  561. of God together

  562. discuss it

  563. think about it

  564. pray about it

  565. and wait on God

  566. until his face appears

  567. now

  568. if you're not there yet

  569. his advice was

  570. get somebody

  571. to read God's word

  572. with

  573. pray about it

  574. discuss it together

  575. and wait

  576. until God's face appears

  577. and basic

  578. biblical spirituality

  579. is right here

  580. it's

  581. get your head

  582. get your heart

  583. get your mind

  584. get your eyes

  585. on the Bible

  586. until it leads you

  587. to prayer

  588. so that's what

  589. happened secondly

  590. in Daniel's life

  591. he then turns to prayer

  592. and again

  593. this

  594. Daniel 9

  595. needs a sermon series

  596. not a one off

  597. okay

  598. so we can only be

  599. cursory here

  600. he says here

  601. that prayer

  602. is seeking

  603. the face of God

  604. and that's what

  605. we have to learn today

  606. is that

  607. reading the Bible

  608. until it leads us

  609. to prayer

  610. is basic spirituality

  611. and then when it

  612. leads us to prayer

  613. prayer is seeking

  614. him

  615. his face

  616. is actually the language

  617. here in Hebrew

  618. so

  619. in verse

  620. back to verse 1

  621. this is at the time

  622. of Darius

  623. and that means

  624. that we're backwards

  625. in chronology

  626. to the time

  627. between Daniel chapter 5

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  628. and Daniel chapter 6

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  629. this is before Daniel

  630. had gone into the lion's den

  631. this vision

  632. and this prayer

  633. and in that chapter 6

  634. right before he's about

  635. to go into the lion's den

  636. it says that to prepare

  637. for that

  638. he got on his knees

  639. with an open window

  640. facing Jerusalem

  641. to pray

  642. three times a day

  643. as was his custom

  644. and so in the

  645. when you read the book

  646. you just simply realize

  647. that Daniel prayed

  648. habitually

  649. three times a day

  650. and he prayed

  651. very much

  652. in the midst

  653. of crisis

  654. as well

  655. and we learn

  656. from Daniel

  657. the call

  658. and the invitation

  659. to spiritual formation

  660. that it requires

  661. habitual prayer

  662. and especially

  663. praying in crises

  664. and that's exactly

  665. what happens here

  666. so

  667. what does that look like

  668. for him

  669. he had read

  670. Jeremiah 25 and 29

  671. and he had heard

  672. God say there

  673. 70 years

  674. and then you'll get

  675. to go back

  676. to Jerusalem

  677. it's been 66 years

  678. and so he immediately

  679. starts to pray

  680. and you can think

  681. of a moment

  682. like verse 17

  683. where he says

  684. Lord make your face

  685. shine on your

  686. desolate sanctuary

  687. Jerusalem temple

  688. restore the temple

  689. and then he says

  690. for your own sake

  691. now over and over

  692. again in the prayer

  693. he says that

  694. do it for your sake

  695. Lord

  696. do it for your sake

  697. and what he's saying

  698. there is

  699. you promised

  700. in Jeremiah

  701. the scroll

  702. to lead us

  703. back to Jerusalem

  704. and restore the temple

  705. and so do it

  706. make good on that promise

  707. and you see

  708. in this prayer

  709. he's holding

  710. intention

  711. to realities

  712. number one

  713. that's that

  714. God has determined

  715. everything that will

  716. come to pass

  717. in history

  718. and he

  719. in the Bible

  720. even sometimes

  721. comes and says it

  722. in 70 years

  723. the temple

  724. will be restored

  725. that's a promise

  726. and then Daniel

  727. turns in the prayer

  728. and now says

  729. okay well do it

  730. do what you said

  731. you're going to do

  732. and so in the Bible

  733. you've got this

  734. tension

  735. where God has determined

  736. all that comes to pass

  737. and prayer

  738. prayer changes history

  739. prayer works

  740. prayer changes the world

  741. and both of those things

  742. fit together

  743. there's no zero sum game

  744. it's 100% true

  745. and 100% true

  746. and that's all

  747. that's here

  748. it's all throughout scripture

  749. one writer

  750. described it like this

  751. and I had this experience

  752. last Saturday

  753. so it was very helpful

  754. to me

  755. where at 6.30am

  756. 7am

  757. on a Saturday

  758. my one day off a week

  759. which is relative

  760. 6.30

  761. 7am

  762. a child comes to the bed

  763. and says

  764. you said

  765. on Tuesday

  766. you would take me

  767. swimming today

  768. and what did he say

  769. he said

  770. now I'm here

  771. to see to it

  772. that you make good

  773. on your promise

  774. right

  775. now I am not God

  776. far away from that

  777. and that means

  778. that I am regularly

  779. disappointing

  780. to my kids

  781. and they come

  782. and they say

  783. make good

  784. on the swimming promise

  785. and I say

  786. I have a lot

  787. to do today

  788. and we're probably

  789. not going to go

  790. and

  791. in the same way

  792. and in a holistically

  793. different way

  794. prayer is coming

  795. in childlike

  796. dependence

  797. and awe

  798. to a God

  799. to a father

  800. who has already said

  801. he's made the promise

  802. and then you come

  803. and you say

  804. now do it

  805. and that's exactly

  806. what Daniel's doing here

  807. you said 70

  808. make it that way

  809. Lord

  810. but

  811. unlike us

  812. God will do it

  813. and he did it

  814. and that's exactly

  815. what prayer is

  816. the heart of prayer

  817. here in this passage

  818. the language

  819. is the language

  820. in verse 3

  821. and that's

  822. where he says

  823. it says that

  824. Daniel

  825. lifted his face

  826. to God

  827. to seek

  828. the face of God

  829. so the text says

  830. seeking him

  831. in prayer

  832. but the actual

  833. Hebrew says

  834. sought his face

  835. and that's the language

  836. all throughout

  837. the Old Testament

  838. why

  839. because

  840. prayer is

  841. intimate

  842. and relational

  843. you lift your face

  844. to God

  845. to seek his face

  846. and it's this idea

  847. of this face

  848. to face

  849. with the living God

  850. now listen

  851. Daniel believes

  852. that when he opens

  853. the Bible

  854. he hears

  855. from God

  856. and then he believes

  857. that he can lift

  858. his face to God

  859. and look at God's face

  860. and they have a face

  861. to face conversation

  862. he believes that

  863. that is

  864. the reality

  865. the heart of prayer

  866. do you believe that

  867. that you are having

  868. a conversation

  869. with the living God

  870. because he's conversed

  871. with you

  872. by scripture

  873. and then you're turning

  874. and giving your face

  875. to him

  876. as he gives his face

  877. to you

  878. in prayer

  879. and that's exactly

  880. what prayer is

  881. and Daniel

  882. very much believes

  883. that's fundamental

  884. to spiritual formation

  885. and biblical spirituality

  886. in his life

  887. and in our lives

  888. as well

  889. and it's

  890. here

  891. it's accompanied

  892. with these acts

  893. of self-denial

  894. so he fasts

  895. he puts on sackcloth

  896. and pours ashes

  897. upon his head

  898. we don't do that anymore

  899. but I just want to note

  900. that the fasting

  901. we do

  902. and spirituality

  903. real spirituality

  904. is accompanied

  905. by acts

  906. of self-denial

  907. and fasting

  908. is one of them

  909. but the sackcloth

  910. and the ashes

  911. was really about

  912. this whole Bible idea

  913. of posture

  914. and prayer

  915. and so all throughout

  916. the Bible

  917. people get on their knees

  918. to pray

  919. in 1 Timothy 2

  920. in the New Testament

  921. Paul says

  922. men of the church

  923. when you pray

  924. lifting holy hands

  925. in the air

  926. now

  927. the Bible says

  928. that the physical body

  929. is important

  930. in prayer

  931. and that posturing

  932. your body

  933. teaches your soul

  934. how to pray

  935. and we don't lift

  936. holy hands in prayer

  937. here in our church

  938. but that's culture

  939. that's not

  940. the Bible says

  941. it all the time

  942. that the body

  943. is so important

  944. to train the soul

  945. and these acts

  946. of self-denial

  947. and fasting

  948. and getting into the word

  949. and then coming to prayer

  950. is all the basics

  951. of what it means

  952. to have spiritual formation

  953. in your life

  954. and Daniel

  955. really lives by that

  956. and believes that

  957. that is why

  958. he's a man

  959. of faith

  960. and hope

  961. and wisdom

  962. and integrity

  963. throughout the whole

  964. of this book

  965. and today

  966. if you're feeling

  967. stale

  968. in spiritual formation

  969. I just want to say

  970. simply

  971. that God

  972. when you come to Jesus

  973. the spirit

  974. breaks the power

  975. of canceled sin

  976. in your life

  977. it makes you able

  978. to change

  979. able to be transformed

  980. and then says

  981. now go work out

  982. your salvation

  983. with fear and trembling

  984. not go get your salvation

  985. but go flesh it out

  986. be changed in your life

  987. and that's just to say

  988. that spiritual formation

  989. is not automatic

  990. and so if you feel

  991. like you're not growing

  992. and your life

  993. your spiritual life

  994. is stale

  995. it's important to hear again

  996. and see Daniel's example

  997. that spiritual formation

  998. is not automatic

  999. it takes acts of self-denial

  1000. and discipline

  1001. and habitual prayer

  1002. and habitual scripture reading

1003. and coming back to the word

  1004. this is never something

  1005. that distances you

  1006. from the justification

  1007. of forgiveness

1008. that you have in Jesus

  1009. no not at all

  1010. never

1011. and so you may be

  1012. I'm far away today

  1013. from acts of self-denial

  1014. from spiritual formation

  1015. in my life

  1016. being meaningful

  1017. that's

1018. and all this is today

  1019. is an invitation

  1020. by King Jesus

  1021. to say

  1022. come back

  1023. come closer

  1024. draw near

  1025. you're forgiven

  1026. you're saved

1027. now work out your salvation

  1028. with fear and trembling

  1029. now one way

1030. he teaches us to do that

  1031. is through prayers

  1032. of confession

1033. and so this whole chapter

1034. is mostly a prayer of confession

1035. and there's so much in it

1036. again we need a series

1037. but just notice what he says

  1038. he said verse 4

  1039. I made confession

  1040. verse 5

  1041. we have sinned

  1042. we've done wrong

  1043. we've acted wickedly

  1044. we've rebelled

  1045. we've turned aside

  1046. verse 6

  1047. we didn't listen

  1048. verse 7

1049. we are people of open shame

1050. there are lots of different words there

  1051. for rebellion against God

1052. every one of them means something different

1053. lots of ways to sin against God

1054. and then four times in the prayer

  1055. verse 7 is notable

1056. he talks about God's righteousness

1057. now for us as modern people

1058. we say the word righteousness

1059. and we don't say the word righteousness

1060. you know we don't use that word

1061. if we do use that word

1062. we mean it as a pejorative

  1063. so we would say

  1064. you know

  1065. she is very self-righteous

  1066. he is very self-righteous

  1067. but in the Bible

1068. righteousness is a relational term

  1069. and what it

1070. you could translate it into

  1071. modern language like this

1072. you do right by me

  1073. that's righteousness

  1074. it's relational

1075. so four times he says

  1076. Lord

1077. you sent us into exile

  1078. into Babylon

  1079. and I'm here today

1080. in my confession to say

1081. you did right by us

1082. that's a very hard thing to say

  1083. but he said

  1084. when you judged us

  1085. it was righteous

  1086. it was right

1087. you did right by us

  1088. and then

  1089. two times he says

  1090. you are righteous Lord

  1091. and in your righteousness

  1092. it belongs to you

  1093. to now show mercy

  1094. and forgiveness

  1095. now in this prayer

  1096. there's this tension

  1097. where he says

1098. you are the righteous God

1099. and you did right by us

1100. to send us into exile

  1101. and judge us

1102. and then on the other hand

1103. you are the righteous God

  1104. and you do right

  1105. by forgiving

  1106. and showing mercy

  1107. and you say

  1108. well what is it

1109. how could it be both

  1110. at the same time

  1111. how do you fit

  1112. those two pieces together

  1113. there's a real tension there

  1114. Paul Kingsnorth

1115. is a famous English writer

  1116. that some folks here

  1117. will probably know

  1118. he's just published

  1119. a new book

1120. that's been very well received

  1121. critically

  1122. and it's called

  1123. Against the Machine

  1124. it's really about

  1125. the spiritual cost

  1126. of modern technocracy

  1127. a life of technology

  1128. that we live

  1129. but Paul Kingsnorth

  1130. wrote this famous essay

  1131. called

1132. The Cross and the Machine

  1133. and in it

1134. he tells his own testimony

  1135. really

  1136. and he says that

  1137. as a teenager

  1138. he believed in science

  1139. quote

1140. that's how he says it

  1141. and he would

  1142. he thought Christianity

  1143. was very silly

  1144. and he grew up

  1145. in rural English parish

  1146. and he did attend

  1147. the Anglican church there

  1148. sometimes

  1149. but he says that

  1150. as a teenager

  1151. he and his pals

1152. would go parish to parish

  1153. into the Anglican

  1154. little parish church

  1155. and they would open

  1156. the visitors books

  1157. and they would write

  1158. not very nice things

  1159. into the visitors books

  1160. so that on Sundays

1161. people would flip the pages

1162. and find not very nice things

  1163. on Sunday mornings

1164. to the point where he said

  1165. after a while

  1166. they would return

1167. and find there were no longer

  1168. any visitors books

  1169. at the churches

  1170. so that

  1171. he said

  1172. that's what I thought

  1173. of Christianity

  1174. later in life

  1175. he was reading

  1176. a friend of his

  1177. by the name of

  1178. John Moriarty

  1179. and he read

  1180. in John Moriarty's

  1181. book

1182. a man who also said

1183. I believed only in science

  1184. he said

  1185. it struck me

  1186. John Moriarty

  1187. wrote this

1188. I believed only in science

  1189. I thought

  1190. Christianity

  1191. a myth

  1192. and then he writes

  1193. until I was ruined

  1194. until I was ruined

  1195. shattered into seeing

  1196. only prayer

  1197. became big enough

  1198. for me

  1199. and then Paul

  1200. Kingsnorth

  1201. reading Moriarty

  1202. as an unbeliever

  1203. says

  1204. Moriarty wrote

  1205. this line

1206. and it changed my life

  1207. the story of Christianity

1208. is the story of humanity's

  1209. rebellion against God

  1210. he said

  1211. the one line

  1212. that changed my life

  1213. the story of Christianity

1214. is the story of humanity's

  1215. rebellion

  1216. against God

  1217. and he said

  1218. I had never thought

  1219. of that before

  1220. he told

  1221. he said

  1222. Moriarty taught me

  1223. that humanity

  1224. is a history

  1225. of rebellion

  1226. against God

  1227. and Christianity

1228. is how God fixed it

  1229. and then he writes

  1230. this is the truth

1231. I would later surrender to

  1232. and today Paul

  1233. is a Christian

1234. this is a prayer of confession

  1235. and what Daniel says

  1236. the man of integrity

  1237. the man of faithfulness

1238. who was sent into exile

1239. because of other people's sins

  1240. said Lord

  1241. I too

  1242. have sinned

  1243. and every single person

  1244. here today

1245. no matter where you are

  1246. spiritually

  1247. what religious background

  1248. you may have

  1249. what you believe in

  1250. you need confession

1251. you need to get it

  1252. off your chest

  1253. we all do

  1254. and the Bible says

1255. we all need to confess

  1256. to God

  1257. and to other people

  1258. our sins

  1259. and our debts

1260. and if we don't do that

  1261. the Bible tells us

1262. our bones are going to rot

  1263. Psalm 51

  1264. it hurts

1265. to not be able to confess

1266. and this man of integrity

  1267. knew

  1268. this prayer

  1269. just simply says

  1270. the history of humanity

1271. is the history of rebellion

  1272. against God

1273. and the story of the Bible

1274. is how God fixed it

  1275. and that's the tension

  1276. in the prayer

1277. so how can Daniel say

  1278. Lord we deserve this

  1279. and you do right

  1280. to forgive us

  1281. what?

  1282. and the answer is

  1283. in the final

  1284. very brief

  1285. vision here

  1286. and that's this

  1287. the third principle

1288. we've got to learn today

  1289. is true prayer

  1290. is in the name

  1291. of the prince

  1292. how can you

1293. how can you pray like that

1294. because it has to be

1295. in the name of the prince

  1296. and today

1297. are we going to solve

  1298. the vision

1299. at the end of this passage

  1300. 62 years

  1301. one week

  1302. 70 years

  1303. 70 weeks

  1304. the answer is no

  1305. because this passage

  1306. needs a series

  1307. and

1308. but let me do a flyover

  1309. to say this

  1310. in verse 20

  1311. Gabriel comes to Daniel

  1312. and says

1313. your prayer has been heard

  1314. you are greatly loved

  1315. I don't think we can

  1316. over stress

  1317. over explain

  1318. or

  1319. push

  1320. what that must have

  1321. meant to Daniel

  1322. a man who's been living

1323. in exile for 66 years

1324. to hear an angel of God

  1325. say

  1326. you are greatly loved

1327. the comfort that must have been

  1328. and so

  1329. to express that

  1330. he explains

  1331. Jeremiah's

  1332. prophecy

  1333. of 70 years

  1334. now

  1335. Jeremiah's prophecy

1336. was going to be fulfilled

  1337. four years after this

1338. Israel was going to turn

1339. Judah was going to return

  1340. to Jerusalem

  1341. but in the prophecy

  1342. there's a complex

  1343. set of numbers

  1344. and if you read

  1345. the commentators

  1346. what they tell us

  1347. very helpfully

  1348. is that

  1349. Jeremiah's 70 years

  1350. is being listed

  1351. in the prophecy

  1352. as 70 weeks

  1353. times 7

  1354. so another way

  1355. to read it is

  1356. this angel Gabriel

  1357. is talking about

  1358. 70 years

  1359. times 7

  1360. 490 years

  1361. and then

  1362. there's numbers

  1363. like

  1364. 62 weeks

  1365. and 7 weeks

  1366. and 1 week

  1367. and all of those

  1368. if you add 62

  1369. and 7

  1370. and 1

  1371. and I'm not good

  1372. at mathematics

  1373. but I know

  1374. that that equals 70

1375. and so when you read

  1376. through you'll see

  1377. all these numbers

  1378. but all the numbers

  1379. if you go through

  1380. carefully

  1381. just simply

  1382. reiterate 70

  1383. 70

  1384. 70

  1385. and this is

  1386. figural language

  1387. and here's what

  1388. the figural language

  1389. is doing

  1390. it says

  1391. what does it say

1392. at the end of the period

  1393. of 70 times 7

  1394. this fullness of time

  1395. this creation number

  1396. what does it say

  1397. did you

1398. did you see the language

  1399. I will

  1400. verse 24

  1401. put an end

  1402. to transgression

  1403. a full atonement

  1404. an everlasting righteousness

  1405. an anointed one

  1406. a prince

  1407. will come

  1408. that's the word

  1409. messiah

  1410. in Hebrew

  1411. and it says

  1412. that prince will come

1413. and he will be cut off

  1414. that's the language

  1415. of execution

  1416. from Isaiah 53

  1417. you see what

  1418. this prophet

  1419. it's very detailed

  1420. it's very complex

  1421. but what it's really

  1422. talking about

1423. is that in the fullness

  1424. of time

  1425. the prince would come

1426. and so when Daniel says

  1427. Lord you're right

1428. to send us into exile

  1429. and you're right

  1430. to forgive us

  1431. how

  1432. and the vision says

  1433. because there is

  1434. a full atonement

  1435. coming

  1436. the prince

  1437. Jesus Christ

1438. the one who would be

  1439. cut off

1440. the one who would be

  1441. executed

1442. and it's by the power

  1443. of that future prince

  1444. in his death

  1445. that Daniel

  1446. in that moment

  1447. could say

1448. now make right by us

  1449. forgive us

1450. like you said you would

  1451. why

  1452. because he's saying

  1453. God look forward

  1454. to the prince

  1455. who is to come

  1456. and we today

  1457. look backward

  1458. and that means

  1459. this morning

  1460. when you see

  1461. this vision

  1462. and that it's actually

  1463. about Jesus

  1464. you can realize

  1465. that every single time

  1466. you pray

  1467. in Jesus name

  1468. it is not just

  1469. an angel from heaven

  1470. that God sent

  1471. to Daniel

  1472. to say

  1473. you are greatly loved

  1474. when you

  1475. listen

  1476. when you say

  1477. when you pray

  1478. and say

  1479. in Jesus name

  1480. you need to know

  1481. what that comes with

1482. and here's what it comes with

  1483. you can hear

  1484. God saying to you

  1485. in that little phrase

  1486. you are greatly loved

  1487. when you pray

  1488. in Jesus name

  1489. it is the pronouncement

1490. that you are greatly loved

  1491. God sent the prince

  1492. from heaven

1493. so that when you make

  1494. confession

  1495. you can say

  1496. Lord

  1497. you're right

  1498. to judge me

  1499. and Lord

  1500. you are right

  1501. to forgive me

  1502. how

  1503. not by me

  1504. but because God says

1505. I will not punish sin twice

  1506. and in the prince

  1507. he already did

1508. every single one of us

  1509. today needs confession

  1510. how do you enter

  1511. into the Christian life

  1512. by confession

  1513. how do you live

  1514. the Christian life

  1515. by confession

  1516. Jesus says

  1517. Lord

  1518. our

  1519. to say

  1520. our father

  1521. forgive us our debts

  1522. every day

  1523. as we forgive others

1524. the heart of spiritual formation

  1525. is confession

  1526. and God says

1527. I will show you mercy

  1528. plead with him

  1529. this week

  1530. don't miss a day

  1531. without confessing your sins

  1532. today even

  1533. let us pray

  1534. Father

  1535. we pray

  1536. Lord have mercy

  1537. we plead for mercy

  1538. forgive us

  1539. our debts

1540. as we forgive our debtors

  1541. our bones hurt

  1542. we deserve

  1543. your righteous judgment

  1544. yet we

  1545. are right

  1546. to be forgiven

  1547. because Jesus Christ

  1548. was condemned

  1549. and so

  1550. we make our plea

  1551. we make our confession

  1552. this morning

  1553. entirely on his basis

1554. and we pray that in Jesus name

  1555. Amen
