  1. All right, let's read from the Bible together.

  2. We're reading from the New Testament.

  3. ! Hebrews chapter 12, verses 1 to 3.

    Hebrews 12:1–3

  4. And we've been in a series on Hebrews 11,

  5. but the logic of Hebrews 11 goes into the beginning of chapter 12,

  6. and so that's where we are tonight.

  7. And this is our final look at this series.

  8. And this is God's Holy Word.

  9. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

  10. let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely,

  11. and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

  12. looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  13. who, for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross,

  14. despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  15. Consider Him who endured from sinners such hostility against Himself,

  16. so that you may not grow weary or faint-hearted.

  17. This is God's Holy Word.

  18. Well, we turn tonight to those verses that Corrie read for us

  19. at the beginning of Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  20. as we conclude our series, our short series,

  21. looking through Hebrews 11 and into 12.

  22. Chariots of Fire was one of the finest,

  23. most successful British films of the 1980s.

  24. It's the story, many of you will know it,

  25. the story of two sprinters, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams,

  26. making their way, really, to success in the 1924 Paris Olympics.

  27. It was a film that received, I think, four Academy Awards,

  28. numerous other accolades.

  29. And there's a scene in the film that depicts Eric Liddell falling early in a kind of 440-yard race.

  30. It was in a Scotland-France athletics meeting.

  31. The scene was filmed here in Edinburgh, just along Golden Acre.

  32. And it was based on a real incident.

  33. The actual race in which it happened took place rather in a triangular contest

  34. between Scotland, England, and Ireland at Stoke and Trent, July 1923.

  35. Liddell was knocked to the ground several strides into the race.

  36. He hesitated.

  37. He got up.

  38. He pursued his opponents.

  39. They were some 20 yards ahead.

  40. He caught the leaders shortly before the finish line and collapsed as he crossed the tape.

  41. Eric Liddell was not a man for giving up.

  42. And as we've noted over the last few weeks,

  43. chapter 11 of Hebrews was written,

  44. And indeed, the whole of the letter was written to encourage really a group of Hebrew Christians

  45. to press on in the way of faith and not to give up.

  46. These Christians were finding the going tough.

  47. Surrounded by much opposition and antagonism,

  48. there was a real danger that some might throw in the towel

  49. and return to their old pattern of life.

  50. And so, here in these opening verses of chapter 12,

  51. after that long list of Old Testament saints who traveled the way of faith,

  52. a writer, in a sense, draws his argument to a close and makes his application.

  53. That application will continue through Hebrews 12.

  54. And in a sense, he wants us to understand

  55. that all that he has been writing about

  56. has been for us,

  57. for you and for me,

  58. as well as for the original readers.

  59. Paul in Romans 15 verse 4 writes this,

    Romans 15:4

  60. For whatever was written in former days

  61. was written for our instruction,

  62. that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures,

  63. we might have hope.

  64. Hebrews 12, these verses were written for us tonight

  65. to bring us hope and to bring us encouragement,

  66. to help us endure in the way of faith.

  67. Because sometimes that is what we need.

  68. We need encouragement.

  69. We need to be helped.

  70. Opposition, bereavement and loss,

  71. sinful mistakes, disappointments,

  72. relationship problems,

  73. family difficulties,

  74. ill health.

  75. All these things and many more

  76. can often wear us down and cause us to despair.

  77. We too, like these Hebrews of old,

  78. live in challenging times.

  79. It's easy for us to become tired or worn out

  80. by the pressures of a world

  81. that is hostile to our faith.

  82. And sometimes that temptation to give up

  83. or throw in the towel is very real.

  84. Sometimes we can be tired and worn out

  85. and feel our faith flagging.

  86. And so, let's listen carefully

  87. as our writer exhorts us

  88. to continue in the way of faith.

  89. Here's vital medicine, if you like,

  90. for our souls,

  91. for those times when we feel more like

  92. giving up than going on.

  93. And I want to highlight five things

  94. from our text this evening.

  95. I'm checking the clock at the back,

  96. so I don't know if it's stopped or not,

  97. but five things.

  98. First thing,

  99. there's a race set before us.

  100. There's a race set before us.

  101. Many of you will know this image,

  102. running a race,

  103. is an oft-used metaphor

  104. drawn from the popular games

  105. of the Greco-Roman world,

  106. commonly used by many ancient philosophers,

  107. Greek philosophers,

  108. to illustrate the demands

  109. of the moral and ethical life.

  110. And in the New Testament,

  111. Paul, in particular,

  112. uses this image

  113. to illustrate the demands

  114. of Christian discipleship.

  115. So, Paul uses it

  116. in places like 1 Corinthians 9, 24.

  117. He says,

  118. Do you not know

  119. that in a race

  120. all the runners run,

  121. but only one receives the prize?

  122. So run that you may obtain it.

  123. Every athlete exercises

  124. self-control in all things.

  125. They do it to receive

  126. a perishable wreath,

  127. wee and imperishable.

  128. Galatians 5, 7,

  129. he writes,

  130. You were running well.

  131. Who hindered you

  132. from obeying the truth?

  133. Philippians 2, 16,

  134. he talks about

  135. not running the race in vain.

  136. And in his very final letter,

  137. as he faces execution,

  138. he describes himself

  139. as one who has finished the race.

  140. And here,

  141. the author of Hebrews

  142. picks up and develops

  143. that self-same image

  144. and exhorts his readers

  145. in these opening verses

  146. of chapter 12,

  147. Let us run with endurance

  148. the race set before us.

  149. He's speaking about

  150. this race of faith.

  151. The idea is not

  152. that we are competing

  153. against one another

  154. in this race,

  155. but we're running rather

  156. the race that God

  157. himself has set before us.

  158. In the race of faith,

  159. we have our course to pursue.

  160. The Christian believer

  161. runs not along,

  162. ultimately,

  163. the route of his or her own choice,

  164. but the route that God

  165. has set before us.

  166. When we become a Christian,

  167. we are entered

  168. into the race of faith.

  169. It's a race,

  170. I think the NIV puts it,

  171. that God has marked out for us.

  172. We do not determine

  173. the length of this race

  174. or the conditions we will face

  175. as we run the race.

  176. These matters are ultimately

  177. in God's hands.

  178. We are not captains

  179. of our own destiny.

  180. We are not ultimately

  181. in control.

  182. That is an illusion.

  183. And yes,

  184. sometimes there are

  185. great and wonderful blessings

  186. that encourage

  187. and stimulate us

  188. as we run this race of faith.

  189. But on other occasions,

  190. that's not the case.

  191. Sometimes there's suffering

  192. and loss.

  193. Faith in Jesus Christ

  194. does not guarantee

  195. immunity from trouble

  196. and distress.

  197. Beware those

  198. who say that it does.

  199. suffering and pain

  200. are not a sign

  201. of the failure of faith.

  202. At times,

  203. that's quite the reverse.

  204. And that is what

  205. these Hebrew Christians

  206. were discovering.

  207. God has set

  208. a race before us

  209. if you're a Christian believer

  210. tonight.

  211. How are you running

  212. the race of faith?

  213. There's a race set before us.

  214. Second thing,

  215. there are witnesses

  216. that surround us

  217. in this race.

  218. Therefore,

  219. since we are surrounded

  220. by so great

  221. a cloud

  222. of witnesses.

  223. The use of the

  224. athletic games metaphor

  225. has led many

  226. to conclude

  227. that the great cloud

  228. of witnesses

  229. mentioned here

  230. are in fact

  231. a great crowd

  232. of witnesses.

  233. They believe

  234. these witnesses

  235. are like spectators

  236. watching from the stand.

  237. And there may be

  238. something in that,

  239. but I don't think

  240. that is the dominant

  241. picture here at all.

  242. It is a cloud

  243. of witnesses,

  244. not a crowd

  245. of witnesses.

  246. These men

  247. of women of faith

  248. in Hebrews 11

  249. are witnesses,

  250. not of those

  251. running the race

  252. of faith now,

  253. but rather witnesses

  254. to God's great

  255. faithfulness.

  256. The Greek word

  257. used here

  258. is a word

  259. from which we get

  260. our word martyr.

  261. In the race

  262. of faith,

  263. we are not alone.

  264. There are those

  265. who have gone

  266. before us,

  267. whose lives

  268. bear testimony

  269. to God's,

  270. to God's saving

  271. and keeping power.

  272. And we are to

  273. draw strength

  274. from the faithful

  275. testimony

  276. of those

  277. who have gone

  278. ahead of us.

  279. These men

  280. and women

  281. are not dead

  282. examples,

  283. they are living

  284. witnesses.

  285. though they

  286. have died,

  287. yet they

  288. still speak.

  289. And their

  290. testimony

  291. and witness

  292. is this,

  293. that the life

  294. of faith

  295. is worth it.

  296. Sometimes,

  297. and I imagine

  298. that was the case

  299. for these

  300. Hebrew Christians,

  301. sometimes the

  302. kind of question

  303. that confronts

  304. us

  305. as Christians

  306. is,

  307. you know,

  308. is it worth it?

  309. we may face

  310. the challenge

  311. to give ourselves

  312. wholeheartedly

  313. and completely

  314. to God,

  315. but we wonder,

  316. will it be worth it?

  317. And then we get

  318. to catch a glimpse

  319. of Abel

  320. and his life

  321. and witness

  322. is that it is

  323. surely worth it.

  324. The commendation

  325. of God

  326. is worth

  327. everything

  328. and anything.

  329. we may ask,

  330. is it really

  331. worthwhile

  332. to walk

  333. with God,

  334. even if it

  335. means there

  336. are places

  337. I can't go

  338. and things

  339. I shouldn't do?

  340. And Enoch's

  341. testimony is yes,

  342. for the walk

  343. of faith

  344. leads to life.

  345. We ask ourselves,

  346. is the gospel

  347. really true?

  348. Is there

  349. really a place

  350. of protection

  351. from the coming

  352. wrath and judgment

  353. of God?

  354. And Noah

  355. reminds us

  356. that when the storm

  357. of God's wrath

  358. comes,

  359. there is a place

  360. of safety

  361. for sinners.

  362. And God

  363. is slow

  364. to reveal

  365. His purposes

  366. in our lives

  367. when nothing

  368. seems to be

  369. making sense.

  370. Is it worth

  371. waiting?

  372. Is it worth

  373. persevering?

  374. Is it worth

  375. being patient?

  376. And Abraham

  377. stands and he

  378. says yes.

  379. Is faith

  380. worth it

  381. when it means

  382. the loss

  383. of wealth

  384. or status

  385. or career?

  386. Moses

  387. tells us

  388. that it is

  389. worth losing

  390. even the

  391. treasures

  392. of an empire

  393. to know

  394. and serve

  395. and worship

  396. Jesus Christ.

  397. And what

  398. then about

  399. suffering

  400. and death?

  401. The martyrs

  402. rise,

  403. their lives

  404. testifying

  405. that even

  406. suffering

  407. and loss

  408. and death

  409. are worth

  410. it to be

  411. found as

  412. men and

  413. women

  414. in Jesus

  415. Christ.

  416. Here is the

  417. church of

  418. the past

  419. speaking to

  420. the church

  421. of today.

  422. Wonderful

  423. solidarity

  424. between God's

  425. people down

  426. through the

  427. ages,

  428. the communion

  429. of saints,

  430. the church

  431. triumphant,

  432. the great

  433. company of the

  434. redeemed,

  435. leaning over the

  436. ramparts of

  437. heaven and

  438. encouraging us

  439. to stay on

  440. course,

  441. to stay on

  442. track.

  443. The dead

  444. are not

  445. dead to

  446. us.

  447. They are

  448. alive.

  449. They are

  450. encompassed

  451. about us.

  452. This great

  453. cloud is

  454. there not

  455. to applaud

  456. us, but

  457. to exhort

  458. us.

  459. Their

  460. presence is

  461. a summons

  462. to run

  463. the race

  464. of faith.

  465. That's why

  466. it's so

  467. important that

  468. we are, as

  469. we were

  470. thinking this

  471. morning,

  472. students of

  473. Scripture.

  474. Yes,

  475. sometimes we

  476. can read

  477. Christian

  478. biographies,

  479. and sometimes

  480. one can feel

  481. quite inadequate.

  482. Often faults

  483. and failings

  484. are kind

  485. of glossed

  486. over.

  487. It's not

  488. the case with

  489. Scripture,

  490. is it?

  491. Noah,

  492. Abraham,

  493. Moses,

  494. David.

  495. We discover

  496. how patient

  497. God was

  498. with His

  499. people of

  500. old.

  501. God's

  502. strength

  503. made perfect

  504. amid all

  505. their human

  506. frailties and

  507. weakness.

  508. The biblical

  509. record of

  510. their lives

  511. and their

  512. achievements

  513. confirms to

  514. us that

  515. persevering

  516. faith is

  517. always worth

  518. it, because

  519. it issues

  520. in great

  521. reward.

  522. And this

  523. great cloud

  524. of witnesses

  525. encourages us

  526. then to

  527. keep on

  528. running the

  529. race of

  530. faith.

  531. There's a

  532. race set

  533. before us.

  534. There are

  535. witnesses that

  536. surround us.

  537. Third thing,

  538. there are

  539. things that

  540. hinder us.

  541. Let us

  542. also lay

  543. aside every

  544. weight and

  545. sin which

  546. clings so

  547. closely.

  548. Those running

  549. the race of

  550. faith must

  551. be vigilant

  552. in casting

  553. off anything

  554. that would

  555. hinder their

  556. progress.

  557. Again, the

  558. imagery most

  559. likely borrowed

  560. from the

  561. rigorous discipline

  562. and training of

  563. those competing

  564. in the ancient

  565. athletic arena.

  566. Contestants in

  567. these ancient

  568. games trained

  569. under very,

  570. very strict rules.

  571. Thirty days

  572. before the games

  573. began, they

  574. came together

  575. under close

  576. supervision.

  577. They exercised

  578. regularly.

  579. They followed a

  580. strict regime

  581. in order to

  582. be able to

  583. compete.

  584. Weight was

  585. kept to a

  586. minimum.

  587. Anything likely

  588. to impede

  589. their progress

  590. was cast

  591. aside.

  592. And the

  593. idea here is

  594. that the

  595. Christian

  596. disciple must

  597. likewise throw

  598. off or cast

  599. aside anything

  600. that might

  601. slow him or

  602. her down in

  603. the race of

  604. faith.

  605. Those ancient

  606. athletes carried

  607. nothing with

  608. them in the

  609. race.

  610. They ran

  611. naked because

  612. they didn't

  613. want to be

  614. held back in

  615. any way.

  616. And the

  617. Christian must

  618. travel light in

  619. the race of

  620. faith.

  621. Our writer,

  622. you'll notice,

  623. mentions these

  624. two things likely

  625. to slow a

  626. believer down in

  627. this race.

  628. And the first

  629. of these is

  630. what he calls

  631. weight.

  632. Lay aside,

  633. he says,

  634. every weight.

  635. Of course,

  636. there are

  637. weights in

  638. life that

  639. have to

  640. be carried.

  641. Family and

  642. work responsibilities,

  643. maybe health

  644. problems and

  645. challenges as

  646. we advance

  647. in years.

  648. That's not

  649. what's in

  650. view here.

  651. In effect,

  652. the weight

  653. that's being

  654. referred to

  655. is the

  656. weight of

  657. an idol,

  658. really.

  659. The excess

  660. baggage of

  661. those things

  662. that draw

  663. from us,

  664. that energy

  665. and commitment

  666. and love,

  667. that should

  668. be for

  669. our Savior.

  670. They restrict

  671. our usefulness

  672. for God.

  673. They hold

  674. us back

  675. from making

  676. progress,

  677. from growing.

  678. Hinder and

  679. they handicap

  680. us in making

  681. it difficult

  682. for us to be

  683. effective

  684. disciples of

  685. Jesus.

  686. forgiveness.

  687. You know,

  688. sometimes we

  689. can hold

  690. on to

  691. things very,

  692. very tightly

  693. in the

  694. Christian life,

  695. good things.

  696. Sometimes even

  697. ministries,

  698. we can hold

  699. on to them.

  700. Instead of

  701. holding them

  702. lightly,

  703. we're grasping

  704. them so

  705. tightly.

  706. Sometimes they

  707. need to be

  708. laid aside.

  709. the love

  710. of ease,

  711. the desire

  712. for respectability,

  713. an excessive

  714. fondness

  715. for worldly

  716. comforts.

  717. How foolish

  718. we can be

  719. when we

  720. pick up

  721. these burdens,

  722. these unhelpful

  723. entanglements

  724. that are likely

  725. to trip us

  726. up or

  727. slow us

  728. down with

  729. their weight.

  730. And then

  731. the second

  732. thing

  733. mentioned

  734. here,

  735. of course,

  736. is sin

  737. itself.

  738. which we're

  739. told clings

  740. so closely.

  741. NIV, I

  742. think,

  743. puts it

  744. the sin

  745. that so

  746. easily

  747. entangles.

  748. Sin is a

  749. crippling

  750. hindrance

  751. to running

  752. the race

  753. of faith.

  754. And the

  755. idea here

  756. is of

  757. something

  758. that would

  759. trip up

  760. the runner,

  761. cause them

  762. to stumble

  763. or fall.

  764. Sin is to

  765. be put

  766. away.

  767. It's to

  768. be thrown

  769. off.

  770. It's to

  771. be discarded.

  772. Running

  773. the race

  774. of faith

  775. means

  776. really

  777. a

  778. lifelong

  779. struggle

  780. or battle

  781. with sin.

  782. In the

  783. race of

  784. faith,

  785. we're

  786. constantly,

  787. every day,

  788. we are to

  789. be throwing

  790. off sin.

  791. This is

  792. what

  793. Christians

  794. of a

  795. previous

  796. generation

  797. knew as

  798. mortification,

  799. putting

  800. sin to

  801. death.

  802. We need

  803. to understand

  804. whether

  805. we're a

  806. young

  807. Christian,

  808. whether

  809. we've been

  810. a Christian

  811. for many,

  812. many years.

  813. There is

  814. no quick

  815. fix in

  816. dealing

  817. with sin.

  818. There's

  819. no magic

  820. wand that

  821. we can

  822. wave that

  823. will eradicate

  824. it.

  825. And those

  826. that peddle

  827. such

  828. experiences

  829. and teachings

  830. around the

  831. churches

  832. do

  833. incalculable

  834. harm to

  835. the spiritual

  836. well-being

  837. of many.

  838. Sinful

  839. attitudes,

  840. actions,

  841. patterns of

  842. behavior are

  843. to be

  844. continually

  845. and ruthlessly

  846. dealt with.

  847. Sin is not

  848. to be

  849. cuddled,

  850. it's not

  851. to be

  852. caressed,

  853. it's not

  854. to be

  855. fondled,

  856. it's to

  857. be

  858. discarded.

  859. Remember

  860. Paul writing

  861. to the

  862. Colossians,

  863. Colossians 3

  864. 5,

  865. he says,

  866. put to

  867. death

  868. therefore

  869. whatever

  870. belongs

  871. to your

  872. earthly

  873. nature,

  874. sexual

  875. immorality,

  876. impurity,

  877. lust,

  878. evil desires,

  879. and greed,

  880. which is

  881. idolatry.

  882. And that

  883. means there

  884. are things

  885. that have

  886. to be

  887. put off.

  888. We actually

  889. have to

  890. do that.

  891. They're not

  892. going to

  893. be taken

  894. from us

  895. in this

  896. life.

  897. Pornographic

  898. images

  899. need to

  900. be put

  901. away.

  902. Programs

  903. or films

  904. that are

  905. a stumbling

  906. block,

  907. maybe the

  908. TV package

  909. has to

  910. be terminated,

  911. the internet

  912. or phone

  913. account

  914. restricted.

  915. Remember

  916. Jesus'

  917. words,

  918. and if

  919. your hand

  920. or your

  921. foot

  922. causes you

  923. to sin,

  924. cut it

  925. off and

  926. throw it

  927. away.

  928. And if

  929. your eye

  930. causes you

  931. to sin,

  932. tear it

  933. out and

  934. throw it

  935. away.

  936. Ah,

  937. yes,

  938. of course.

  939. By itself

  940. doing these

  941. things is

  942. never enough

  943. to avoid

  944. sin.

  945. Because the

  946. problem is

  947. not on the

  948. computer screen

  949. or TV

  950. or the

  951. phone line.

  952. Of course,

  953. the problem

  954. is in

  955. the heart.

  956. And that's

  957. why just

  958. saying no

  959. is never

  960. enough.

  961. Self-discipline,

  962. moral effort,

  963. yes,

  964. they are

  965. required.

  966. But on

  967. their own,

  968. they're never

  969. enough.

  970. We need

  971. what Thomas

  972. Chalmers called

  973. the expulsive

  974. power of

  975. a new

  976. affection.

  977. Our hearts

  978. have to be

  979. taken up,

  980. captivated,

  981. enthralled

  982. by something

  983. bigger and

  984. greater and

  985. more wonderful.

  986. Because the

  987. ultimate

  988. antidote to

  989. lust or

  990. pride,

  991. selfishness,

  992. is the

  993. love of

  994. Jesus Christ.

  995. The love

  996. that He

  997. demonstrates

  998. for us

  999. on the

  1000. cross.

  1001. And that's

  1002. the one

  1003. thing that

  1004. God has

  1005. in a

  1006. sense in

  1007. unlimited

  1008. supply.

  1009. He alone

  1010. has the

  1011. love to

  1012. forgive and

  1013. the power

  1014. to forgive

  1015. our darkest

  1016. sins,

  1017. to satisfy

  1018. our deepest

  1019. desires.

  1020. And as we

  1021. will see in

  1022. a moment,

  1023. we need to

  1024. be looking

  1025. to Jesus.

  1026. He is to

  1027. be our

  1028. great desire,

  1029. our great

  1030. delight,

  1031. our first

  1032. and greatest

  1033. love.

  1034. There's a

  1035. race set

  1036. before us.

  1037. There are

  1038. witnesses

  1039. that encompass

  1040. us.

  1041. And there are

  1042. things that

  1043. hinder us

  1044. and need to

  1045. be put aside.

  1046. Fourthly,

  1047. there's an

  1048. attitude that

  1049. must characterize

  1050. us.

  1051. And let us

  1052. run with

  1053. endurance,

  1054. some

  1055. translations

  1056. perseverance,

  1057. the race

  1058. set before

  1059. us.

  1060. Again,

  1061. the race

  1062. in mind

  1063. here is not

  1064. a quick

  1065. sprint,

  1066. be over

  1067. in a few

  1068. seconds,

  1069. something more

  1070. akin to a

  1071. long-distance

  1072. race,

  1073. a marathon,

  1074. a cross-country.

  1075. And it's

  1076. this kind

  1077. of race,

  1078. of course,

  1079. that requires

  1080. perseverance

  1081. and endurance.

  1082. To finish

  1083. such a race,

  1084. race takes a

  1085. degree of

  1086. mental toughness,

  1087. takes focus,

  1088. takes determination.

  1089. And the

  1090. word here

  1091. used,

  1092. conveys this

  1093. idea of

  1094. pressing on

  1095. even as

  1096. things become

  1097. difficult,

  1098. like running

  1099. into a

  1100. headwind.

  1101. There's

  1102. resistance,

  1103. there's

  1104. opposition to

  1105. be faced.

  1106. These things

  1107. make progress

  1108. in the race

  1109. hard and

  1110. difficult.

  1111. Sometimes the

  1112. wind isn't

  1113. at our

  1114. backs.

  1115. We're not

  1116. always running

  1117. downhill.

  1118. I have a

  1119. memory from

  1120. many years

  1121. ago here

  1122. in Edinburgh.

  1123. I ran

  1124. in a

  1125. competition,

  1126. and it was

  1127. a national

  1128. boys'

  1129. brigade

  1130. cross-country

  1131. race.

  1132. I must have

  1133. been about,

  1134. I guess,

  1135. 17 or

  1136. 18 years

  1137. of age,

  1138. so that

  1139. wasn't

  1140. yesterday,

  1141. let me

  1142. tell you.

  1143. And the

  1144. course was

  1145. set on

  1146. Arthur's

  1147. seat,

  1148. and if

  1149. anybody knows

  1150. about cross-country

  1151. here in

  1152. Scotland,

  1153. they always

  1154. run it in

  1155. January.

  1156. That's where

  1157. it's always

  1158. run.

  1159. I have no

  1160. idea why

  1161. they do

  1162. that,

  1163. but it's

  1164. always run

  1165. in January.

  1166. So you

  1167. can imagine

  1168. the weather

  1169. was awful.

  1170. It was cold,

  1171. there was snow,

  1172. there was sleet

  1173. falling,

  1174. and we

  1175. had to

  1176. complete,

  1177. I think,

  1178. a couple

  1179. of laps

  1180. of this

  1181. course,

  1182. and I

  1183. remember

  1184. after the

  1185. first lap

  1186. of the

  1187. course,

  1188. as the

  1189. wind and

  1190. the snow

  1191. stung my

  1192. face and

  1193. my legs,

  1194. I can

  1195. remember it

  1196. so vividly,

  1197. I seriously

  1198. thought,

  1199. I'm just

  1200. going to

  1201. jack this

  1202. in.

  1203. I'm heading

  1204. for a

  1205. warm shower

  1206. before anyone

  1207. else gets

  1208. there.

  1209. I'm giving

  1210. up.

  1211. But I

  1212. didn't want

  1213. to

  1214. let the

  1215. rest of

  1216. the team

  1217. down.

  1218. I'd

  1219. started,

  1220. and so I

  1221. would finish.

  1222. I didn't

  1223. win a

  1224. medal,

  1225. I didn't

  1226. win a

  1227. prize,

  1228. but I

  1229. completed

  1230. the course.

  1231. And

  1232. sometimes

  1233. the race

  1234. of faith

  1235. is like

  1236. that.

  1237. It can

  1238. be hard,

  1239. it can

  1240. be uncomfortable,

  1241. tough and

  1242. testing,

  1243. it's

  1244. tempting

  1245. just

  1246. throwing

  1247. the towel.

  1248. But this

  1249. race,

  1250. in this

  1251. race,

  1252. we need

  1253. to have

  1254. the right

  1255. attitude.

  1256. We need

  1257. to take

  1258. the long

  1259. term

  1260. view.

  1261. It will

  1262. be a

  1263. test of

  1264. our staying

  1265. power.

  1266. On

  1267. occasions,

  1268. we will

  1269. have to

  1270. run

  1271. through the

  1272. pain

  1273. barrier.

  1274. We will

  1275. have to

  1276. keep on

  1277. going.

  1278. It's not

  1279. all going

  1280. to be

  1281. sunshine and

  1282. light winds.

  1283. We will

  1284. feel the

  1285. wind in

  1286. our face,

  1287. but we

  1288. will keep

  1289. on

  1290. keeping

  1291. on.

  1292. there's

  1293. a race

  1294. set before

  1295. us.

  1296. There's

  1297. witnesses

  1298. that surround

  1299. us.

  1300. There are

  1301. things that

  1302. hinder us.

  1303. There's an

  1304. attitude that

  1305. is to

  1306. characterize

  1307. us.

  1308. Fifthly,

  1309. that fifth

  1310. thing,

  1311. and the

  1312. most important

  1313. thing,

  1314. perhaps of

  1315. all,

  1316. there's a

  1317. person who

  1318. inspires

  1319. us,

  1320. looking

  1321. to

  1322. Jesus,

  1323. the founder

  1324. and perfecter

  1325. of our

  1326. faith,

  1327. who for the

  1328. joy set

  1329. before him

  1330. endured the

  1331. cross,

  1332. scorning its

  1333. shame,

  1334. is seated

  1335. at the

  1336. right hand

  1337. of the

  1338. throne of

  1339. God.

  1340. Where does

  1341. the strength

  1342. come from

  1343. to run

  1344. the race

  1345. with endurance?

  1346. Where do

  1347. we obtain

  1348. the resources

  1349. that we

  1350. need to

  1351. keep on

  1352. keeping

  1353. on?

  1354. Is it a

  1355. case that

  1356. we grin

  1357. and bear

  1358. it?

  1359. We try

  1360. harder?

  1361. We pull

  1362. our socks

  1363. up.

  1364. No,

  1365. the strength

  1366. that we

  1367. need comes

  1368. from only

  1369. one source,

  1370. and that

  1371. is from

  1372. Jesus

  1373. Christ,

  1374. the Alpha

  1375. and the

  1376. Omega,

  1377. the author

  1378. and finisher

  1379. of faith,

  1380. the one who

  1381. stands at

  1382. the beginning

  1383. and the

  1384. end of the

  1385. Christian life,

  1386. and indeed

  1387. at all

  1388. points in

  1389. between.

  1390. The verb

  1391. that's used

  1392. here is a

  1393. striking one.

  1394. It means

  1395. to look

  1396. away from

  1397. everything

  1398. else in

  1399. order to

  1400. fix the

  1401. eyes intently

  1402. on a single

  1403. object.

  1404. Away from

  1405. the spectators,

  1406. away from

  1407. the other

  1408. runners,

  1409. away from

  1410. the difficulties

  1411. of the course,

  1412. away even

  1413. from self.

  1414. Look

  1415. to

  1416. Jesus.

  1417. Moffat

  1418. translates the

  1419. verse very

  1420. helpfully,

  1421. with no

  1422. eyes for

  1423. anyone or

  1424. anything

  1425. except

  1426. Jesus.

  1427. It's easy,

  1428. so easy,

  1429. to become

  1430. distracted,

  1431. to fix our

  1432. gaze elsewhere,

  1433. to think that

  1434. progress in

  1435. the race of

  1436. faith is

  1437. really down

  1438. to us,

  1439. our abilities,

  1440. to think

  1441. that it's all

  1442. about how we

  1443. compare or

  1444. match up to

  1445. others around

  1446. us.

  1447. How many

  1448. Christians spend

  1449. their time

  1450. thinking about

  1451. others,

  1452. how they're

  1453. doing,

  1454. what others

  1455. think of

  1456. them?

  1457. Small wonder

  1458. that when

  1459. we fix

  1460. our gaze

  1461. elsewhere,

  1462. we find

  1463. ourselves

  1464. stumbling

  1465. or being

  1466. tripped up.

  1467. Small wonder

  1468. that when

  1469. we take

  1470. our eyes

  1471. of Jesus,

  1472. that we

  1473. begin to

  1474. run out

  1475. of steam.

  1476. Look at

  1477. the words

  1478. the writer

  1479. uses here

  1480. to describe

  1481. Jesus.

  1482. First,

  1483. there's a

  1484. Greek word,

  1485. archegos,

  1486. a word that

  1487. was used

  1488. in classical

  1489. Greek.

  1490. It referred

  1491. to the

  1492. great heroes

  1493. that founded

  1494. their ancient

  1495. cities.

  1496. Sometimes in

  1497. English we

  1498. might talk

  1499. about a

  1500. Founders'

  1501. Day,

  1502. reference often

  1503. to a

  1504. school maybe

  1505. or an

  1506. organization,

  1507. the Boys'

  1508. Brigade.

  1509. I remember

  1510. we always

  1511. had a

  1512. Founders'

  1513. Day parade

  1514. at the

  1515. end of

  1516. October

  1517. for

  1518. William

  1519. Alexander

  1520. Smith.

  1521. The

  1522. founder is

  1523. not only

  1524. the person

  1525. who started

  1526. the organization

  1527. or school,

  1528. they're the

  1529. person whose

  1530. example is

  1531. meant to

  1532. serve as

  1533. a model,

  1534. as a

  1535. stimulus to

  1536. those who

  1537. follow.

  1538. And yet

  1539. that word

  1540. can also

  1541. be used

  1542. in a

  1543. slightly

  1544. different

  1545. sense,

  1546. reflected

  1547. in some

  1548. other

  1549. translations

  1550. that

  1551. translate

  1552. the word

  1553. pioneer,

  1554. someone who

  1555. leads,

  1556. inspires others

  1557. to follow

  1558. after them,

  1559. a trailblazer,

  1560. someone who

  1561. goes ahead

  1562. and opens

  1563. up the way

  1564. for others

  1565. to follow,

  1566. like we

  1567. might think

  1568. of the

  1569. great

  1570. explorers

  1571. of the

  1572. past,

  1573. blazed

  1574. a trail

  1575. into

  1576. uncharted,

  1577. unmapped,

  1578. unknown

  1579. territories,

  1580. opening up

  1581. continents,

  1582. and others

  1583. followed after

  1584. them.

  1585. They were

  1586. pioneers,

  1587. they were

  1588. archegos.

  1589. Earlier in

  1590. the letter,

  1591. the writer

  1592. calls Jesus

  1593. the archegos,

  1594. the pioneer

  1595. of our

  1596. salvation.

  1597. But whatever

  1598. the idea

  1599. that we

  1600. take there,

  1601. the idea

  1602. is basically

  1603. the same.

  1604. The Christian

  1605. faith does

  1606. not originate

  1607. with us,

  1608. but with

  1609. Jesus.

  1610. He is the

  1611. one upon

  1612. whom our

  1613. faith is

  1614. founded.

  1615. We believe

  1616. in Him,

  1617. we trust

  1618. in Him,

  1619. we follow

  1620. Him,

  1621. we fix

  1622. our eyes

  1623. on Him.

  1624. He is

  1625. the one

  1626. who stands

  1627. at the

  1628. very center

  1629. of our

  1630. faith and

  1631. our lives.

  1632. It's

  1633. through Jesus

  1634. that we

  1635. come to

  1636. faith.

  1637. He is

  1638. the one

  1639. who establishes

  1640. faith in

  1641. our hearts.

  1642. Paul tells

  1643. the Philippians,

  1644. He who

  1645. began a

  1646. good work

  1647. in you.

  1648. And so we

  1649. mustn't take

  1650. our eyes

  1651. from Him.

  1652. The other

  1653. words that's

  1654. used here

  1655. in this

  1656. verse to

  1657. describe Jesus

  1658. is another

  1659. Greek word,

  1660. teleotin,

  1661. finisher,

  1662. perfecter.

  1663. It comes

  1664. from a

  1665. Greek word,

  1666. telos.

  1667. It means

  1668. the end

  1669. or the

  1670. goal or

  1671. the purpose.

  1672. The form

  1673. it has here,

  1674. it has the

  1675. idea of

  1676. completer,

  1677. the one

  1678. who finishes,

  1679. who completes

  1680. a job of

  1681. work.

  1682. Jesus finished

  1683. the work

  1684. that His

  1685. Father gave

  1686. Him to do.

  1687. On the

  1688. cross,

  1689. He cried

  1690. out,

  1691. it is

  1692. finished.

  1693. He is the

  1694. one who

  1695. brings faith

  1696. to

  1697. consummation.

  1698. And the

  1699. path that

  1700. Jesus has

  1701. set out

  1702. for us

  1703. does not

  1704. end or

  1705. finish in

  1706. a dead

  1707. end.

  1708. For the

  1709. joy set

  1710. before Him,

  1711. He endured

  1712. the cross

  1713. and scorned

  1714. its shame.

  1715. And there's

  1716. a great paradox

  1717. there,

  1718. isn't it?

  1719. The deepest

  1720. sorrow,

  1721. the highest

  1722. joy,

  1723. found in

  1724. that same

  1725. place,

  1726. the cross

  1727. of Jesus

  1728. Christ.

  1729. For

  1730. Jesus,

  1731. His joy

  1732. lay in

  1733. the redemption

  1734. of His

  1735. people,

  1736. in the

  1737. vindication

  1738. of His

  1739. Father's

  1740. righteousness,

  1741. in the

  1742. conquest of

  1743. Satan,

  1744. in the

  1745. drawing of

  1746. death's sting,

  1747. in the

  1748. bringing of

  1749. many sons

  1750. to glory,

  1751. in His

  1752. enthronement

  1753. at the

  1754. right hand

  1755. of the

  1756. majesty on

  1757. high,

  1758. all the

  1759. terrible

  1760. horrors of

  1761. the cross

  1762. swallowed up,

  1763. as it were,

  1764. by the joy

  1765. that was set

  1766. before Him.

  1767. Now He's

  1768. seated at

  1769. the right

  1770. hand of

  1771. the Father,

  1772. the race

  1773. over,

  1774. the struggle

  1775. past,

  1776. the victory

  1777. won.

  1778. And from

  1779. His throne

  1780. He looks

  1781. upon us

  1782. and He tells

  1783. us that

  1784. the way

  1785. is open,

  1786. open to

  1787. the guilty

  1788. and open

  1789. to the weak

  1790. and open

  1791. to the weary,

  1792. open to

  1793. sinners.

  1794. The way

  1795. to God

  1796. is now

  1797. guaranteed.

  1798. The road

  1799. has been

  1800. built,

  1801. and from

  1802. His throne

  1803. He beckons

  1804. us to

  1805. look,

  1806. to come

  1807. to Him

  1808. and to

  1809. trust Him.

  1810. Because it's

  1811. in looking

  1812. to Jesus

  1813. that we

  1814. begin the

  1815. Christian life.

  1816. It's in

  1817. looking to

  1818. Jesus

  1819. that we

  1820. continue

  1821. in the

  1822. Christian

  1823. life.

  1824. And it's

  1825. in seeing

  1826. Jesus

  1827. that lies

  1828. at the

  1829. end of

  1830. the Christian

  1831. life.

  1832. Christianity

  1833. is Christ.

  1834. And if

  1835. you want

  1836. to explore

  1837. the Christian

  1838. faith,

  1839. you must

  1840. consider

  1841. Jesus.

  1842. You may

  1843. want to

  1844. talk about

  1845. the dinosaurs

  1846. and the

  1847. age of

  1848. the earth

  1849. and the

  1850. problem of

  1851. evil and

  1852. all of

  1853. these things.

  1854. But ultimately,

  1855. if you want

  1856. to wrestle

  1857. and to come

  1858. to terms

  1859. with Christianity,

  1860. you have to

  1861. come to

  1862. terms with

  1863. Jesus Christ.

  1864. His life,

  1865. His teaching,

  1866. His claims,

  1867. His death,

  1868. His resurrection.

  1869. If you want

  1870. to grow as

  1871. a Christian,

  1872. you need to

  1873. keep looking

  1874. to Jesus.

  1875. Corrie was

  1876. reminding us

  1877. of that this

  1878. morning.

  1879. Puritan

  1880. Richard Sibbes

  1881. writes,

  1882. Hold your

  1883. eyes on

  1884. Jesus that

  1885. you might

  1886. develop a

  1887. stronger

  1888. appetite for

  1889. Him.

  1890. Maybe you're

  1891. someone who's

  1892. worried this

  1893. evening about

  1894. the future.

  1895. I meet lots

  1896. of people who

  1897. are anxious

  1898. about the

  1899. future.

  1900. Not just

  1901. their own

  1902. future,

  1903. the future

  1904. of the

  1905. nation,

  1906. society,

  1907. culture.

  1908. Jesus knows

  1909. the future.

  1910. He has

  1911. shaped it.

  1912. He's the

  1913. same yesterday,

  1914. today,

  1915. and forever.

  1916. Look to

  1917. Him.

  1918. Or maybe

  1919. you're fearful,

  1920. afraid,

  1921. afraid of

  1922. death.

  1923. Maybe you

  1924. wouldn't admit

  1925. that to

  1926. others,

  1927. but deep

  1928. down,

  1929. you're scared.

  1930. Jesus has

  1931. conquered

  1932. death and

  1933. drawn its

  1934. sting.

  1935. Fix your

  1936. eyes on

  1937. Him.

  1938. Look to

  1939. Him.

  1940. Maybe

  1941. you're

  1942. somewhere

  1943. tonight and

  1944. you're weighed

  1945. down with a

  1946. guilty conscience.

  1947. Things in

  1948. your past that

  1949. you think,

  1950. I could never

  1951. be forgiven

  1952. for that.

  1953. Let me tell

  1954. you that the

  1955. blood of

  1956. Jesus can

  1957. make the

  1958. foulest

  1959. clean.

  1960. The precious

  1961. blood of

  1962. Christ can

  1963. clean anything

  1964. and anyone.

  1965. Look to

  1966. Him.

  1967. Or maybe

  1968. you're

  1969. deeply

  1970. insecure,

  1971. driven,

  1972. your sense

  1973. of worth

  1974. bound up with

  1975. what you're

  1976. achieving or

  1977. doing,

  1978. never really

  1979. happy unless

  1980. you've got

  1981. this or that

  1982. or the other

  1983. thing,

  1984. and nothing

  1985. really satisfies.

  1986. Let me tell

  1987. you that Jesus

  1988. Christ is more

  1989. than enough to

  1990. satisfy the

  1991. deepest longings

  1992. of the human

  1993. heart.

  1994. Set your

  1995. heart on

  1996. Jesus.

  1997. Maybe

  1998. tonight you're

  1999. lonely,

  2000. isolated.

  2001. Maybe you've

  2002. lost someone

  2003. very close to

  2004. you.

  2005. Who is

  2006. Jesus?

  2007. He is,

  2008. as we come to

  2009. the season of

  2010. that, He's

  2011. Emmanuel.

  2012. He's God

  2013. with us.

  2014. Look to

  2015. Him.

  2016. Or if you're

  2017. tired and weary

  2018. and feeling

  2019. like giving

  2020. up and

  2021. throwing in

  2022. the towel,

  2023. here's someone

  2024. who faced

  2025. far more

  2026. than you

  2027. have ever

  2028. done,

  2029. and yet

  2030. never gave

  2031. up,

  2032. never lost

  2033. heart.

  2034. Consider

  2035. Him, it

  2036. says,

  2037. verse 3,

  2038. who endured

  2039. from sinners

  2040. such hostility

  2041. against himself

  2042. that you may

  2043. not grow

  2044. weary or

  2045. faint-hearted.

  2046. One commentator

  2047. points out

  2048. Aristotle uses

  2049. the words for

  2050. growing weary

  2051. and losing

  2052. heart of an

  2053. athlete.

  2054. He flings

  2055. himself to

  2056. the ground

  2057. after he

  2058. surged past

  2059. the winning

  2060. post of the

  2061. race.

  2062. The writer

  2063. is saying

  2064. to us,

  2065. don't give

  2066. up.

  2067. Don't relax

  2068. before the

  2069. winning line.

  2070. Don't collapse

  2071. until the

  2072. race is over.

  2073. Keep on

  2074. your feet.

  2075. Keep running

  2076. to the end.

  2077. I began

  2078. speaking of

  2079. Eric Liddell,

  2080. best known,

  2081. of course,

  2082. for famous

  2083. victory in

  2084. the 1924

  2085. Olympic Games.

  2086. But Liddell

  2087. was a runner

  2088. in a far

  2089. more significant

  2090. race,

  2091. in this race

  2092. of faith.

  2093. He turned

  2094. his back

  2095. on fame

  2096. and fortune

  2097. to become

  2098. a missionary

  2099. in China.

  2100. He finished

  2101. his race

  2102. at the age

  2103. of just 43

  2104. in a Japanese

  2105. internment

  2106. camp at the

  2107. end of the

  2108. Second World

  2109. War.

  2110. How did

  2111. he do it?

  2112. What was

  2113. his secret?

  2114. He looked

  2115. to Jesus.

  2116. His soul

  2117. was anchored

  2118. in Jesus.

  2119. He patterned

  2120. his life

  2121. on Jesus

  2122. Christ.

  2123. By God's

  2124. grace,

  2125. may that be

  2126. true of us

  2127. tonight.

  2128. May we

  2129. too be

  2130. found looking

  2131. to the

  2132. only one

  2133. who can

  2134. carry us

  2135. to the

  2136. finishing

  2137. line.

  2138. Let's

  2139. remember

  2140. the

  2141. witnesses

  2142. that surround

  2143. us.

  2144. Let's

  2145. throw off

  2146. those things

  2147. that would

  2148. hinder us.

  2149. Let's

  2150. make sure

  2151. that endurance

  2152. is the

  2153. attitude

  2154. that

  2155. characterizes

  2156. us.

  2157. But first

  2158. and foremost,

  2159. let's make

  2160. sure that we're

  2161. looking to

  2162. the one
