  1. of thousands of refugees in camps all around Central Europe and maybe we think well that story

  2. ! sounds more fitting for there rather than for us here in nice comfortable relatively affluent

  3. ! Edinburgh. But when we recognize the reality that desperation takes many forms then I think we begin to see

  4. ! that there is relevance for us.

  5. as we are invited to recognize that the God who sees is the God of compassion.

  6. As Calvin put it, the Christ who put on our feelings also put on our flesh.

  7. So God's willing to meet our desperation with this compassion and we're going to see that

  8. and the second and it's related truth for ourselves is that God is ready to meet our lack with his

  9. overflowing grace. And again this is a pattern we see it in this one woman's story but it's a pattern we

  10. see and we could trace all through the Bible that God often chooses to demonstrate his grace and his

  11. power in the context of our weakness. To show to us and to show to the world that our life depends on God.

  12. That the life of faith is a daily and a constantly placing our weak hands into God's almighty hand.

  13. It is about learning to discover and to rediscover that God is glorious and God is good.

  14. So you and I, we need this little story and the truths that it conveys and we need to claim the truths of this story for our lives.

  15. So let's get into the first couple of verses and help us to recognize that God meets desperation with his compassion.

  16. Because what we see is a human tragedy developing.

  17. So there's a company of the prophets and we've encountered them before and a wife from one of the prophets comes

  18. and explains to us the extent of the tragedy that is beginning to develop.

  19. So her husband, the prophet has died and he has died leaving a debt of some kind significant enough

  20. that the creditor is now claiming the debt. She cannot pay the debt and so what's going to happen

  21. is that her two sons are going to be sold into slavery. And standing behind all that is the reality that this

  22. woman appears to be going through all this by herself. And we say this because in the Old Testament,

  23. there were poor laws that spoke about the help that a community would provide.

  24. And in particular, it spoke to us of a kinsman redeemer, that within God's Old Testament law,

  25. there was provision for a family member who would take responsibility for settling debts.

  26. There is no kinsman redeemer here. And so in desperation, her faith cries out to Elisha,

  27. to the Lord's prophet. She has nothing. Her only hope rests in God.

  28. And what's Elisha's response to this situation?

  29. How can I help you?

  30. He is God's man and he has God's heart and he longs to help. His heart is moved instinctively with compassion

  31. for this woman of God in her suffering.

  32. As I was thinking about this story, I remembered back in, I think it was 2012,

  33. teaching the story of the Good Samaritan to a group of Chinese students who had never heard it before.

  34. And as we were talking about what Jesus teaches about if you see someone on the road,

  35. you know, that invitation to help and to use one's resources, they were sharing a story, a true story,

  36. that had happened in their country in 2011. It became a huge story across all the news networks of

  37. a little girl in a busy market who was knocked over by a van, not just once, but twice.

  38. And over the course of some 10 or 15 minutes, multiple people who had witnessed what happened,

  39. they did nothing. And so it led to the country asking big questions of themselves. Why did people

  40. not get involved? How could people just walk by as if nothing had ever happened?

  41. God's man is not unconcerned. God's prophet is willing to enter in. And this speaks hope to the women,

  42. because now she knows she will have access to God in her troubles. It's wonderful to look at the life

  43. of Elisha and to recognize that Elisha mirrors for us the compassion of God. In Exodus chapter 34,

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  44. when Moses says to God, God, show me yourself. God says, no one can see my glory and live,

  45. but here's what I'll do. I'll tell you my name. I'll tell you my character. And as God begins to talk

  46. about what he is like, he says, I am the Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God.

  47. And as we read, for example, the book of Exodus, it's the compassion of God that explains why he

  48. acted to redeem his people from slavery. It is God's compassion that moved him to respond

  49. to their cries of misery and their distress, sending Moses to be a deliverer, working those great miracles

  50. of his power so that the people of God would be free to know their God and to know the heart of their God,

  51. that he is compassionate. It's the same God who established within the Old Testament those poor laws

  52. that express the particular care that God has for widows and orphans for the weak and the helpless and that he

  53. expects the people of God to have. In the New Testament, the religion that God approves of

  54. is when we care for the widow and the orphan, because then the people of God are reflecting a heart like his.

  55. But to think still further, the emotional response of Elisha in this woman's story speaks to us again of the emotional life of the Lord Jesus.

  56. If you want to read a good essay on that, B.B. Warfield has a wonderful essay on the emotional life of the Lord Jesus.

  57. But to think about the Gospels, we read the stories of the life of Jesus and we see the compassion that he had for huge crowds.

  58. Sometimes he sees the crowds and he has compassion and so what he does is he heals all the sick within the crowd.

  59. Sometimes he sees the crowd and he has compassion so that he feeds them because they're hungry.

  60. Sometimes he has compassion and he teaches them because he sees them as like sheep without a shepherd.

  61. They are ignorant. They don't know the way back to God and so he teaches.

  62. But sometimes too we see in the Gospels that Jesus has compassion on individuals.

  63. So he walks along a road and he sees a funeral procession and here is a widow who has lost her son and the son is in the coffin

  64. and Jesus stops the procession, touches the coffin and commands the boy to live.

  65. Or another time, a desperate father comes with a young son who's been possessed by a demon that is trying to destroy him

  66. and Jesus, moved with compassion, drives out the demon.

  67. Or as the lepers, those untouchables who had to stay a great distance from other people,

  68. as they cried out to Jesus for help,

  69. it was compassion that saw Jesus move towards them and touch them and heal them.

  70. Our Savior has a heart of compassion and that compassion leads to action.

  71. And we can go further as well and recognize that in the heart of the Gospel,

  72. there is compassion for a lost and a broken and a sinful world.

  73. To think about that great parable of the Good Samaritan is to recognize that in the Gospel,

  74. Jesus becomes for us the Great Samaritan.

  75. He sees our misery, our desperation.

  76. And of course, when we look honestly at the Bible and our own lives,

  77. we realize that our spiritual misery is actually a mess of our own making.

  78. Because we are the ones who have turned our back on God.

  79. We are those who are treating God shamefully.

  80. Yet the Holy Lord Jesus, who could have stayed at a distance,

  81. passed by on the other side, he enters in.

  82. And his heart of compassion, his holding nothing back commitment to be a Savior,

  83. leads him to go to the cross to give his life in our place to pay the ransom price.

  84. God meets desperation with his compassion.

  85. It's in his nature and it's the heart of the Gospel.

  86. But I think it's worth us taking a little sort of pause and a little sidebar at this point.

  87. Because we need to recognize that what's true for this woman is not true for every person.

  88. Our God is in control of all things.

  89. Nothing happens apart from his will.

  90. And our God is good all the time.

  91. But yet even within our story, there is a point of tension.

  92. Because we have a prophet and we're told that he revered the Lord.

  93. He honored the Lord.

  94. That was what he lived for.

  95. But he has died and his family are suffering.

  96. And that at least invites us to consider that painful mystery that has always probably provided questions for people of faith and people without faith.

  97. Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?

  98. Why does he allow bad things to happen to his people?

  99. You know, in this story and in every miracle story that we read in the Bible,

  100. the God of compassion acts in a particular way to bring a particular deliverance,

  101. to bring an immediate end to the desperation,

  102. to draw them out of the miry clay.

  103. But you and I know that's not always the case.

  104. And part of the life of faith is wrestling with those things that we know to be true while living in the tension of the way life is,

  105. to trust that God is good.

  106. That this one who reveals himself as gracious and compassionate,

  107. he will either, because he must be faithful to himself and to his people,

  108. he will either take us out of the trouble that we are in,

  109. or he will and he must be with us to give us grace,

  110. even for as long as he leaves us in those trials and troubles.

  111. But in this woman's story,

  112. the compassion on display will lead to complete transformation.

  113. But here's why I think you and I need to hear this story.

  114. Firstly, because we need to remind ourselves

  115. some truths about God.

  116. The first time God is named by a human being,

  117. in the book of Genesis, Hagar,

  118. who's in desperate trouble,

  119. and God came and spoke and delivered and gave hope.

  120. And she said,

  121. you're the God who sees me.

  122. God says,

  123. I see you.

  124. And he knows where our troubles are.

  125. He knows that desperation takes many forms.

  126. Our story is not this woman's story.

  127. And the God who is altogether wise,

  128. he knows exactly the trials and the troubles

  129. that you and I are facing.

  130. Now, they may not mirror the size and the complexity of her story,

  131. but they are real nonetheless.

  132. Perhaps it's loneliness and isolation.

  133. Perhaps you find yourself in a city and full of crowds,

  134. but you feel alone.

  135. You're desperate for friendship.

  136. Maybe your trouble is rejection or bullying.

  137. Maybe you find yourself excluded because of faith.

  138. Maybe persecuted online for your beliefs.

  139. And it hurts.

  140. Maybe it's in the workplace

  141. or where you study or go to school.

  142. Maybe you're struggling to keep up with the workload.

  143. Maybe you're kind of breaking under the burdens of responsibilities.

  144. Maybe it's uncertainty about the future.

  145. Career prospects.

  146. Maybe it's a very basic fear and anxiety.

  147. When the guys from Solace come on Friday night in November,

  148. they'll be asking the question,

  149. is there any hope for the future?

  150. Maybe that's a question we find ourselves asking.

  151. Well, the God who sees us is the God who says to us,

  152. come to me.

  153. Cry out to me in faith.

  154. Ask Jesus.

  155. Help me.

  156. God also is saying to us through this story

  157. and through what we discover in the Bible,

  158. he's saying to us,

  159. see my heart.

  160. Learn to trust in my character.

  161. To fix our eyes by faith on Jesus

  162. who is described as our sympathetic high priest.

  163. Don't believe the lie

  164. that God is too distant,

  165. that God is too big,

  166. that God is too busy for the likes of me and you.

  167. Don't tell yourself,

  168. my troubles don't really matter to God.

  169. I shouldn't really bother God with this.

  170. And certainly don't say,

  171. I should be able to deal with this by myself.

  172. God wants to supply grace at all times,

  173. in all circumstances,

  174. in all our weakness.

  175. Rather,

  176. see the compassion of Jesus in the gospels.

  177. See the compassionate Savior on the cross

  178. and know his heart in heaven is unchanged.

  179. He still loves us.

  180. He still,

  181. as we thought about this morning,

  182. pours out the Spirit on his people.

  183. There is grace for us from Jesus.

  184. Jesus.

  185. But I think God is also saying

  186. to us as his church,

  187. it's something about Elisha.

  188. And I think God says to his church

  189. through this story,

  190. you go be my hands and feet.

  191. I've been tidying up my bookshelves recently

  192. and I came across an old book that my auntie,

  193. some of you might know my auntie,

  194. Katie Ann McKinnon.

  195. She wrote a book called Love Breaks Through.

  196. It's a really lovely book.

  197. It's a really lovely title.

  198. She went to Kenya as a nurse

  199. and set up lots of baby homes and orphanages.

  200. And what a wonderful mission

  201. for a follower of Jesus

  202. to let God's love break through.

  203. To let the light of God's love

  204. break through and into the darkness

  205. and despair that people face.

  206. Just like Elisha,

  207. confronted by human suffering,

  208. to see and to feel

  209. and to act for Jesus,

  210. following the pattern of Jesus.

  211. What that looks like

  212. will look very different for us all.

  213. We won't go and set up baby homes in Kenya

  214. or to think about Adam.

  215. You know, we might not have a ministry

  216. to refugee camps and medical ministry.

  217. We all have our own circles.

  218. We have our own particular communities.

  219. We have our own gifts and abilities.

  220. But there are things in common

  221. by way of responding.

  222. I think one of them

  223. is the need for us to slow down.

  224. To try and build some margins.

  225. Perhaps to go unplugged

  226. so that we can see

  227. the people who are in front of us.

  228. And to see the people in front of us

  229. as people made in God's image.

  230. People who matter to God.

  231. It will help us to help others

  232. if we are regularly reflecting on

  233. the compassion of God for us in the gospel.

  234. That's what will stop us becoming weary

  235. or cynical or just saying

  236. the job is too much.

  237. If we recognize that God stopped at nothing

  238. to love us and to save us

  239. and to bring us to himself.

  240. As we've been thinking from the book of Acts,

  241. we need to rely on the spirit

  242. to both guide our steps,

  243. to guide our conversations,

  244. and to give us the power

  245. and the wisdom that we need

  246. to know how best we can help.

  247. We need to ask

  248. for an increasing desire

  249. to give God glory

  250. in our lives

  251. in this way

  252. by following the pattern

  253. that he says.

  254. Because in this story,

  255. it's God through his prophet Elisha

  256. who meets desperation

  257. with his compassion.

  258. Well, let's think secondly

  259. about another reality

  260. we see in the story,

  261. and it's this,

  262. that God meets our lack

  263. with his overflowing grace.

  264. There's a quote from J.C. Royal

  265. that I really appreciate

  266. to do with friendship.

  267. A friend is someone

  268. who halves our sorrows

  269. and doubles our joys.

  270. And just think about

  271. an experience perhaps

  272. you have had

  273. of going through a hard time

  274. and a friend comes to the door

  275. and they sit

  276. and they spend time with you.

  277. Or they cook

  278. or they provide a meal for you.

  279. Or they send you a message

  280. and they tell you

  281. you're praying for you.

  282. Or they stand by you

  283. and for you.

  284. When we've had that experience,

  285. we understand

  286. that friendship,

  287. friendship,

  288. and Christian friendship

  289. is a wonderful gift

  290. to receive,

  291. which also makes it

  292. a wonderful gift

  293. to give.

  294. But to come back

  295. to our story,

  296. the impression

  297. that we are given

  298. is that this woman

  299. has no one.

  300. She has no friend

  301. to stand by her

  302. until Elisha steps in.

  303. And so we get

  304. this beautiful truth

  305. of here is God's prophet,

  306. here is the one

  307. who represents God

  308. in the world

  309. and God through Elisha

  310. becomes a true friend

  311. to the helpless.

  312. Again,

  313. illustrating what the Bible

  314. teaches,

  315. that God's strength

  316. is made perfect

  317. in human weakness.

  318. The story reveals it

  319. in a different way.

  320. You know,

  321. to read the Old Testament,

  322. you discover

  323. that God's people,

  324. there were battles

  325. that they won

  326. that only God

  327. could win for them.

  328. Go to the Gospels,

  329. there are healings

  330. that people experience

  331. that only Jesus

  332. could give to them.

  333. This woman finds

  334. a help and a friend

  335. that only God

  336. could be and give.

  337. She discovers

  338. that God

  339. is an incredibly

  340. generous giver.

  341. The God

  342. who pours out

  343. his spirit

  344. on his people

  345. like a monsoon rain

  346. is the God

  347. that David celebrates

  348. in Psalm 23

  349. of the overflowing cup

  350. of goodness

  351. and mercy.

  352. Now we see

  353. he's the God

  354. of overflowing grace

  355. as the oil

  356. continues to flow.

  357. So to just pick up

  358. our story again,

  359. Elisha asks the woman

  360. in verse 2

  361. about her resources

  362. and he discovers

  363. your servant

  364. has nothing

  365. except a small jar

  366. of olive oil,

  367. just a little jar

  368. of oil.

  369. A few weeks ago now

  370. we were in

  371. the life of Elijah

  372. and Elijah

  373. was sent

  374. to a widow's

  375. home

  376. to be provided

  377. for

  378. in a time

  379. of famine

  380. by a woman

  381. who has

  382. just a little

  383. olive oil

  384. and just a little

  385. bit of flour

  386. and again

  387. God miraculously

  388. provided food

  389. for her family

  390. and for Elisha.

  391. It's happening

  392. again.

  393. Notice in verse 3

  394. and 4 that she's

  395. called to

  396. exercise faith.

  397. This is a moment

  398. that's going to be

  399. public because she

  400. has to go around

  401. and ask all her

  402. neighbors for

  403. empty jars.

  404. Why do you want

  405. my jars?

  406. Surely someone's

  407. going to ask

  408. well it's because

  409. the prophet has

  410. come and he said

  411. I need to get

  412. the jars and if

  413. I get the jars

  414. then my tiny little

  415. jar is going to

  416. fill them all.

  417. God's going to

  418. look after me.

  419. She's exercising

  420. faith in her

  421. community

  422. and as she

  423. is invited

  424. to go

  425. and collect

  426. and then to

  427. pour and to

  428. fill

  429. she's invited

  430. to take God

  431. at his word.

  432. Just like

  433. Elijah's widow

  434. just like

  435. when Jesus

  436. turned water

  437. into wine

  438. remember that

  439. first miracle

  440. where he reveals

  441. his glory

  442. the servants

  443. are taking

  444. these massive

  445. jars of water

  446. to the master

  447. of ceremonies

  448. taking Jesus

  449. at his word

  450. that by the time

  451. it arrives

  452. and by the time

  453. it's drawn out

  454. it's going to be

  455. wine

  456. and it is

  457. and it's the

  458. very best

  459. of wine.

  460. So we see in

  461. verse 5 and 6

  462. her obedience

  463. she left him

  464. and shut the door

  465. behind her

  466. and her sons

  467. they brought

  468. the jars to her

  469. and she kept

  470. pouring

  471. when all the jars

  472. were full

  473. she said to her

  474. son bring me

  475. another one

  476. but he replied

  477. there's not a jar

  478. left

  479. then the oil

  480. stopped

  481. flowing.

  482. And then we see

  483. the outcome

  484. and we see

  485. the wonderful

  486. overflowing

  487. nature of

  488. God's grace

  489. so she goes

  490. to tell

  491. Elisha

  492. and Elisha

  493. said go

  494. sell the oil

  495. pay your debts

  496. you and your

  497. sons can live

  498. on what is

  499. left.

  500. God doesn't

  501. just give

  502. her enough

  503. to pay off

  504. the debts

  505. to stop

  506. the slavery

  507. God goes

  508. above and

  509. beyond.

  510. Debts are

  511. paid

  512. and there's

  513. plenty

  514. left to

  515. live on.

  516. God's

  517. miracle

  518. shows the

  519. women's

  520. lack

  521. being met

  522. by a

  523. generous

  524. outpouring

  525. of grace.

  526. And this

  527. absolutely

  528. prepares us

  529. for the

  530. story of

  531. the Lord

  532. Jesus

  533. and the

  534. way

  535. Jesus

  536. operates.

  537. So remember

  538. Mark chapter

  539. six

  540. Jesus

  541. asks

  542. the

  543. disciples

  544. there's

  545. this

  546. great

  547. big

  548. hungry

  549. crowd

  550. he

  551. asked

  552. them

  553. what

  554. do

  555. you

  556. have

  557. five

  558. loaves

  559. and we

  560. have

  561. two

  562. fish

  563. how will

  564. that do

  565. for

  566. feeding

  567. such a

  568. great

  569. crowd

  570. God

  571. then Jesus

  572. prays

  573. and one

  574. loaf

  575. becomes a

  576. thousand

  577. meals.

  578. That's

  579. generous

  580. grace.

  581. Or to

  582. think about

  583. another

  584. story

  585. to think

  586. about the

  587. time when

  588. Jairus

  589. an official

  590. came to

  591. meet Jesus

  592. and fell

  593. at his

  594. feet

  595. to tell

  596. Jesus

  597. that his

  598. daughter

  599. was

  600. seriously

  601. ill

  602. and then

  603. a message

  604. comes

  605. later

  606. from the

  607. servants at

  608. home

  609. don't bother

  610. Jesus

  611. anymore

  612. because

  613. your

  614. daughter

  615. has

  616. died

  617. and

  618. Jesus

  619. at that

  620. point

  621. says

  622. don't

  623. be

  624. afraid

  625. just

  626. believe

  627. and as

  628. the story

  629. progresses

  630. behind

  631. closed

  632. doors

  633. Jesus

  634. calls her

  635. back to

  636. life

  637. in another

  638. example of

  639. his

  640. lavish

  641. grace

  642. and these

  643. miracles

  644. provide us

  645. a little

  646. window into

  647. the story

  648. of God's

  649. salvation

  650. here is a

  651. woman with

  652. a debt

  653. that she

  654. cannot pay

  655. the Bible

  656. tells us

  657. every human

  658. being has

  659. a massive

  660. debt

  661. not financial

  662. but moral

  663. we are made

  664. to honor

  665. God

  666. we are made

  667. to obey

  668. God

  669. we are made

  670. to love

  671. God

  672. and to love

  673. our neighbor

  674. and every

  675. time that we

  676. fail in those

  677. duties

  678. we are

  679. amassing

  680. debt

  681. and to

  682. examine our

  683. hearts and

  684. our conscience

  685. and to hear

  686. the testimony

  687. of God's

  688. word

  689. they all

  690. speak the

  691. same

  692. message

  693. that by

  694. nature we

  695. are guilty

  696. of rebellion

  697. by nature

  698. we turn

  699. our backs

  700. by nature

  701. we don't

  702. do those

  703. things that

  704. we are

  705. called to

  706. do

  707. and even

  708. when we

  709. try our

  710. best

  711. we still

  712. fall short

  713. of God's

  714. glory

  715. and so

  716. the Bible

  717. uses a

  718. picture

  719. of

  720. slavery

  721. not that

  722. slavery

  723. is a

  724. prospect

  725. to come

  726. but by

  727. nature

  728. we are

  729. slaves

  730. to sin

  731. this is a

  732. condition

  733. a situation

  734. we cannot

  735. pay God

  736. back from

  737. we cannot

  738. earn our

  739. way out

  740. of

  741. and so

  742. we find

  743. ourselves

  744. the Bible

  745. tells us

  746. heading for

  747. ultimate

  748. death

  749. the spiritual

  750. death of

  751. being separate

  752. from God

  753. and his

  754. goodness

  755. and into

  756. that

  757. desperate

  758. situation

  759. God

  760. steps in

  761. Jesus

  762. the eternal

  763. son of

  764. God

  765. this

  766. sinless

  767. one

  768. enters

  769. into

  770. this world

  771. that he

  772. created

  773. this world

  774. that had

  775. turned

  776. its back

  777. on God

  778. he becomes

  779. one of

  780. us

  781. in order

  782. to become

  783. our

  784. kinsman

  785. redeemer

  786. remember

  787. that figure

  788. from the

  789. old

  790. testament

  791. the close

  792. relative

  793. who agrees

  794. to pay

  795. the debt

  796. in full

  797. to set

  798. a person

  799. free

  800. and to

  801. restore

  802. them

  803. to good

  804. standing

  805. Jesus

  806. came

  807. to do

  808. that

  809. for us

  810. on the

  811. cross

  812. he came

  813. to serve

  814. us

  815. to give

  816. his life

  817. as a ransom

  818. for many

  819. he has

  820. cancelled

  821. the debt

  822. that would

  823. condemn

  824. us

  825. when our

  826. faith is

  827. in Jesus

  828. we're told

  829. it's as if

  830. our record

  831. of debt

  832. is nailed

  833. to the

  834. cross

  835. of Christ

  836. and it

  837. is marked

  838. paid

  839. in

  840. full

  841. as a

  842. free

  843. gift

  844. of

  845. God's

  846. grace

  847. and not

  848. only

  849. that

  850. not only

  851. is our

  852. debt

  853. cancelled

  854. the God

  855. of overflowing

  856. grace

  857. goes above

  858. and beyond

  859. he invites

  860. us into

  861. his family

  862. he invites

  863. us into

  864. a life

  865. where we

  866. have peace

  867. with

  868. God

  869. where we

  870. have

  871. eternal

  872. life

  873. with

  874. God

  875. knowing

  876. him

  877. now

  878. with

  879. a

  880. promise

  881. of

  882. knowing

  883. him

  884. and

  885. enjoying

  886. him

  887. forever

  888. and when

  889. we understand

  890. what the

  891. Bible

  892. tells us

  893. about

  894. ourselves

  895. and about

  896. our God

  897. about the

  898. problem of

  899. sin

  900. and the

  901. reality

  902. of salvation

  903. then how

  904. we can

  905. have

  906. this

  907. becomes

  908. the

  909. question

  910. for our

  911. lives

  912. and here

  913. again we

  914. return to

  915. the woman

  916. who gives

  917. us the

  918. answer

  919. to see

  920. our

  921. distress

  922. to see

  923. our need

  924. we are to

  925. call out

  926. to Jesus

  927. for his

  928. help

  929. for his

  930. salvation

  931. and remember

  932. he is the

  933. one who

  934. encourages

  935. us to

  936. ask

  937. and to

  938. seek

  939. and to

  940. knock

  941. to come

  942. to a

  943. God

  944. who is

  945. generous

  946. to

  947. bank

  948. everything

  949. on

  950. God's

  951. kindness

  952. and

  953. compassion

  954. to

  955. place

  956. our

  957. hope

  958. squarely

  959. in the

  960. truth

  961. of who

  962. God

  963. is

  964. as

  965. revealed

  966. in his

  967. son

  968. Jesus

  969. he is a

  970. God

  971. of love

  972. and

  973. kindness

  974. and

  975. forgiveness

  976. for people

  977. like you

  978. and me

  979. and so

  980. as the

  981. story

  982. shows us

  983. God

  984. meeting

  985. our

  986. lack

  987. with his

  988. overflowing

  989. grace

  990. it's a

  991. story

  992. that

  993. invites

  994. us

  995. to

  996. humble

  997. faith

  998. like the

  999. hymn

  1000. writer

  1001. to say

  1002. nothing

  1003. in my

  1004. hands

  1005. I bring

  1006. simply

  1007. to your

  1008. cross

  1009. I

  1010. cling

  1011. this

  1012. woman

  1013. was wise

  1014. to know

  1015. her

  1016. resources

  1017. were not

  1018. up to

  1019. the task

  1020. of meeting

  1021. her

  1022. needs

  1023. your

  1024. human

  1025. resources

  1026. my human

  1027. resources

  1028. cannot

  1029. meet

  1030. our

  1031. basic

  1032. need

  1033. to be

  1034. right

  1035. with

  1036. God

  1037. but

  1038. Jesus

  1039. can

  1040. and so

  1041. we are

  1042. called

  1043. to go

  1044. to him

  1045. because

  1046. he is

  1047. able

  1048. and he

  1049. is

  1050. willing

  1051. the story

  1052. as we

  1053. hear it

  1054. as well

  1055. invites us

  1056. to heartfelt

  1057. worship

  1058. of our

  1059. God

  1060. as we

  1061. place

  1062. ourselves

  1063. within

  1064. this

  1065. story

  1066. to reflect

  1067. on

  1068. the desperate

  1069. trouble

  1070. that we

  1071. were in

  1072. because of

  1073. sin

  1074. to think

  1075. about the

  1076. incredible

  1077. the indescribable

  1078. gift

  1079. of love

  1080. that God

  1081. the Father

  1082. has sent

  1083. his own

  1084. son to

  1085. be our

  1086. savior

  1087. then that

  1088. causes our

  1089. hearts

  1090. to recognize

  1091. he is of

  1092. supreme

  1093. worth and

  1094. value

  1095. it leads

  1096. to joy

  1097. it opens

  1098. our mouth

  1099. to sing

  1100. his praise

  1101. it opens

  1102. our hearts

  1103. that we

  1104. would live

  1105. with grateful

  1106. obedience

  1107. and then

  1108. this story

  1109. too

  1110. invites us

  1111. to an

  1112. even greater

  1113. happy ending

  1114. than we

  1115. find in

  1116. this story

  1117. it's

  1118. wonderful

  1119. to see

  1120. the

  1121. transforming

  1122. work of

  1123. God

  1124. from the

  1125. threat of

  1126. slavery

  1127. from having

  1128. nothing

  1129. that now

  1130. her debts

  1131. are cancelled

  1132. her families

  1133. together

  1134. they have

  1135. enough to

  1136. live on

  1137. that's a

  1138. happy ending

  1139. that's a

  1140. work of

  1141. God

  1142. but the

  1143. story invites

  1144. us into

  1145. a still

  1146. greater

  1147. happy ending

  1148. so whenever

  1149. the Bible

  1150. tells stories

  1151. of miracles

  1152. those miracles

  1153. are redemptive

  1154. in their

  1155. nature

  1156. we see that

  1157. here

  1158. those sons

  1159. are not

  1160. sold as

  1161. slaves

  1162. but every

  1163. miracle provides

  1164. for us a

  1165. window

  1166. a window

  1167. into the

  1168. new creation

  1169. a window

  1170. into the

  1171. kingdom

  1172. of God

  1173. and in

  1174. the kingdom

  1175. of God

  1176. there is

  1177. and there

  1178. never will

  1179. be any

  1180. lack

  1181. there will

  1182. be no

  1183. suffering

  1184. there will

  1185. be no

  1186. separation

  1187. there will

  1188. be no

  1189. sin

  1190. there will

  1191. be no

  1192. death

  1193. it is a

  1194. place where

  1195. we will

  1196. live eternally

  1197. under the

  1198. waterfall of

  1199. God's love

  1200. and grace

  1201. and we

  1202. are invited

  1203. to live

  1204. in that

  1205. grace

  1206. today

  1207. understanding

  1208. that someday

  1209. we will

  1210. feast in a

  1211. new way

  1212. and that

  1213. will last

  1214. forever
